6 Ways You’re Unintentionally Making Your Anxiety Worse

0
0

Anxiety is a totally normal part of life, particularly in college when professors, friends, employers and family all expect a lot from you. You might not be able to control all of that, but you can control your lifestyle choices.

Whether you suffer from an anxiety disorder or just feel the day-to-day stress of college creeping in, you might be doing some small things that make your more anxious, which no one wants to be. Here are some life choices that could unintentionally be making your anxiety worse.

1. Avoidance

It might seem like the best solution to anxiety is simply steering clear of what makes you anxious. Not the case.

“Avoiding the things that make you anxious makes your more anxious about those things,” says Dr. Alice Boyes, a psychologist and author of the book The Anxiety Toolkit. “You see it in things like eating disorders, where someone will start avoiding certain fatty foods, then the number of foods that makes them anxious because of fat or sugar or whatever it is they’re anxious about becomes a wider and wider circle.”

Learning to not give in to your anxiety might require professional help, but understanding that giving in and avoiding anxiety-inducing scenarios only exacerbates it is a good first step.

2. “Safety behaviors”

Again, self-treatment might lead you to rely on certain behaviors that temporarily ease anxiety. Dr. Boyes calls these "safety behaviors," and they actually perpetuate your anxiety.

“Safety behaviors is when you do stuff to make you less anxious. Like if you're anxious about driving on the highway you only do it if you have someone in the car with you or refuse to take the highway and only take backroads," Dr. Boyes says. "Or, someone whose anxious about blushing or sweating might wear tons of deodorant. So overcompensating increases anxiety as well." In the moment it may seem like a quick fix, but it's actually doing more harm than good!

3. Caffeine

I know it feels like we all needthat third cup of coffee to get you through your late afternoon class, but caffeine can have an adverse effect on your anxiety.

“I know for me, consuming a lot of caffeine makes my anxiety a lot worse,” Lexi Hill from the University of South Carolina says. “I stick to tea only!” Chelsea Jackson, a junior at Iowa State, also noticed that caffeine worsened her anxiety and said switching from caffeine to ginseng helped.

“Obviously excessive amounts of caffeine is going to make you more jumpy,” Dr. Boyes says. “It’s a kind of cycle—that you feel exhausted from feeling anxious all the time, so you end up having more caffeine to compensate and that just makes your more jittery.”

We all love a good Starbucks run, but if you’re having a particularly anxious day, maybe opt for a non-caffeinated tea or decaf coffee.

4. Alcohol

Going out can be fun. Feeling anxious? Not so fun.

“Alcohol seems to make my anxiety worse too,” Chelsea says. Alcohol is a depressant and the effect it has on neurotransmitters can negatively impact your mood. Also, depending on alcohol to ease social anxiety combines the anxious effects of alcohol and the problematic use of "safety behaviors." Chelsea stopped drinking and noticed a difference in her anxiety levels.

“Hangxiety,” or anxiety that comes with a gnarly hangover, is also a common feeling. Studies have shown that hangovers, by causing unpleasant physical reactions and changes in mood, often increase anxiety.

Quitting cold turkey might not be practical for everyone, but if you’re feeling particularly anxious, you could simply pass on going out that night or nominate yourself to be DD and enjoy yourself without drinking.

5. Isolating yourself

It’s easy to lock yourself away when you're anxious and upset. No one needs to see you like this. But honestly, other people might provide a nice distraction.

“I didn't develop my specific anxiety disorder until a few years ago, but I use to avoid going out or talking to people unless it was absolutely necessary,” Chelsea says. "However, I realized isolating myself from going out only exacerbated my anxiety when I did inevitably need to leave the house for work and school.”

When you’re alone, it’s just you and your thoughts, so if you’re having anxious thoughts, that probably won’t pan out well.

“One of the things that increase anxiety is ruminations. People get confused between ruminating and problem solving,” Dr. Boyes says. “If you’re good at thinking you tend to try and think your way out something, but if you’re thinking a lot about something chances are it’s not going to lead to more insights or get you less anxious.”

6. An unusual sleep schedule

Again, a classic college student move. You have stuff to get done and no time to do it. Then on the weekends, you stay out until 4 a.m. You’ll sleep when you’re dead, right? Bad idea.

Weird sleep schedules can also make anxiety worse. Sleeping and anxiety go hand in hand. Anxiety can make it hard to sleep, but not getting enough sleep can make you more anxious. “Sometimes insomnia and anxiety can be a vicious cycle,” Chelsea says.

“Just in general, poor sleep hygiene can cause more anxiety,” Dr. Boyes says. Things like taking excessive naps, using alcohol to get to sleep and coping with caffeine, in the long run, worsen anxiety, she adds.

There’s no quick fix to anxiety. Making conscious choices in your day-to-day life can help limit it, and if you can lower your anxiety, why wouldn’t you want to?

Sofia Carson Just Gave Us The First Sneak Peek at PLL Spinoff 'The Perfectionists'

There has been a Pretty Little Liars-shaped hole in our hearts since the show ended last year, but yesterday actress Sofia Carson gave us something to satisfy our appetites.

Carson, most notable for playing the Evil Queen’s daughter Evie in Disney Channel’s Descendants movies, was cast as one of the leads in the PLL spinoff, titled Pretty LittleLiars: The Perfectionists, and she gave us our first look at the upcoming series. PLL’s Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish will be returning as well, according to Deadline.

PLL’s official Twitter released a sneak peek pic as well, meaning THIS IS REAL and THIS IS HAPPENING. The pic includes Carson, Pieterse, and Parrish, as well as PLL executive producer I. Marlene King (yass ladies behind the scenes!).

The Perfectionists is based on another book series by Sara Shepard (the author behind Pretty Little Liars) and follows Pieterse and Parrish’s characters, Alison DiLaurentis and Mona Vanderwaal, respectively. Carson plays a blogger and coder named Ava trying to break into the world of fashion.

The spinoff is set in a town called Beacon Heights, where the residents’s obsession with perfection drives lying, alibis, and murder. It seems like the show is going to have a lot to say about the modern young person’s pressure to be perfect, and the dangers of expecting perfection out of yourself and others.

Karey Burke, executive vice president of program and development of PLL’s home network Freeform, said, “Pretty Little Liars was a cultural phenomenon so it's no wonder fans wanted more.”

We only have these pics to tide us over for now, but re-watching PLL on Netflix will be enough until Perfectionists comes out, right?

A Puppy Died on a United Airlines Flight After an Attendant Forced Its Owners to Place It In an Overhead Bin

A 10-month old French bulldog puppy suffocated to death in a plane's overhead bin on Tuesday, after a United Airlines flight attendant allegedly forced its owners to place the dog there for the duration of their three-hour flight.

According to BuzzFeed News, Kokito was in a standard pet carrier and placed by its owner, Catalina Castano, under the seat in front of her. Catalina was traveling with her two children after visiting her husband, Bryan, who told BuzzFeed News the family had paid United the necessary fee to carry Kokito with them in a cabin.

However, Bryan asserted that a flight attendant told Catalina she had to place the carrier — with Kokito still inside it — inside of an overhead bin. Maggie Gremminger, a passenger on the same flight, wrote about the incident on Facebook.

"My wife repeatedly asked her to let her keep the dog by her feet," Brayan told BuzzFeed News. "She then asked her if the dog would be OK. The flight attendant wouldn’t let her keep Kokito by her feet and assured her that he would be fine. Witnesses can attest to that."

United has since called the incident a "tragic accident" and issued a statement: "We assume full responsibility for this tragedy and express our deepest condolences to the family and are committed to supporting them. We are thoroughly investigating what occurred to prevent this from ever happening again."

The airline is also reportedly refunding the family's tickets and paying for a necropsy for the dog.

Many people — including a slew of celebrities — took to Twitter to express their anger; some even threatening to boycott United.

The United Airlines flight attendant has not been identified.

Sarah Drew is Already the Lead On a New Show After the Heartbreaking News She's Leaving 'Grey's Anatomy'

Last week, Grey's Anatomy fans were heartbroken to find out that two longtime cast members — Sarah Drew and Jessica Capshaw — would be leaving after this season. While April Kepner and Arizona Robbins will certainly be missed, Drew won't be absent from TV screens for too long.

According to Deadline, the actress has landed a leading role in the upcoming CBS reboot of the 1980s police series Cagney and Lacey

Drew will star as Cagney alongside Michelle Hurd, who's been cast as Lacey. The two will both be LAPD detectives.

Drew issued a statement about her upcoming departure from the ABC show last week, expressing her gratitude to the fans she developed over the course of nine seasons.

There's no word on a premiere date for Cagney and Lacey, but I'll sure be counting down the days as soon as this season of Grey's ends.

Did Taylor Swift's 'Delicate' Music Video Copy a Perfume Ad?

Taylor Swift used Sunday's iHeart Music Awards to premiere the music video for her latest Reputation single, "Delicate." In it, *~magic~* grants her the opportunity to be seemingly invisible to everyone around her — a refreshing break from being recognized everywhere she goes — and she uses the rare occasion to make faces in a mirror and dance around.

However, for some, the video seemed familiar. People were quick to point out its similarities to a 2016 perfume ad for Kenzo.

The ad, which was directed by Spike Jones, features ballerina and actress Margaret Qualley doing quite a few of the same things Swift does in the Delicate video.

Numerous Twitter users shared screengrabs from both videos to show the similarities.

For now, there's no real validity to any of the claims that Swift "copied" the Kenzo ad. Watch both videos below to see if you think the similarities are or aren't a coincidence.

A TL;DR Guide To Political Activism For Students Who Are Too Young To Vote

0
0

“If you don’t like what the government is doing, get out there and vote!” This is a common sentiment in the United States. Voting is an awesome tool that US citizens have to affect the political system directly, but what if you’re too young to vote?

The past few weeks, it’s become abundantly clear that high school students, many of whom are under the legal voting age, are ready to effect change on the US political system. This is fantastic, but it can get a little confusing. As a minor, what forms of political activism are accessible and possible for you to use to make an impact? Believe it or not, there is a lot you can do before you’re old enough to vote. So read on, and get ready to change the world!

Voting is not the only kind of political activism

When you hear someone encouraging you to exercise your civic duty, you probably think of voting. But in reality, our Founding Fathers outlined the Constitution so as to give us the right (or, depending on how you see it, responsibility) to participate in the political system in a myriad of ways.

“The main form of political participation is voting, but we go past that and have free speech, free assembly, freedom of petition,” says Cory Bergen, who has a JD from the law school at University of Maryland and now teaches AP Government at Dexter High School. “The First Amendment gives us the right to address our grievances to the government and say, ‘I don’t like what you’re doing, and you’re representing us, so this is what we feel like you should be doing.’”

Telling the government that you don’t like what it’s doing sounds pretty nice sometimes, doesn’t it? So how exactly does one go about doing that?

“We can lend our voices to our elected representatives, contacting them through letter, or email, or whatever platform. We can show up at city council meetings for local government. There are lots of ways to do that locally, which will affect you more day to day,” Bergen says. “You can work on campaigns. I encourage my students to get involved even though they’re too young to vote. You can still work on campaigns.”

But what if these nice little acts aren’t working? Bergen says, “People tend to gravitate towards more unconventional means of political participation, like protests, when they don’t feel like conventional means of contacting leaders is getting the desired result. Whether it be a rally, a walk-out, a sit-in, a lie-in, the goal is to try to grab attention. You want to make the system stop for a minute so we can take a look at what’s going on.”

Following the deadly shooting in Parkland, Florida, in February, you’ve probably heard that there’s not much we can do because the NRA donates so much money to politicians. To that, Bergen says, “These days, we know the effect that big money and special interest groups have on the political system. So we see a lot of more grassroots protests saying, ‘What about us?’ According to Citizens United, PACs and Super PACs have a First Amendment right to donate ‘big money’ to candidates to get them elected. If you don’t have the resources to do that, that’s how people use protests—to cut through all the noise and make people stop for a second and pay attention.”

What does this look like for high school students?

The students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School definitely have set an excellent example of how high school students can get involved politically. They have organized a campaign called Never Again MSD, a nationwide protest called March For Our Lives, and their petition, which calls for stricter background checks for gun buyers, has almost 150,000 signatures.

Bergen says, “When Emma Gonzalez says, ‘We’re gonna be the kids you read about in textbooks,’ I think she’s right about that.”

But what about on a smaller scale? Marin Waddington, a senior in high school who will be playing field hockey at Tufts University in the fall, has taken action using social media. On March 5th, she and her friend Joe Ramey wrote a letter to the student body encouraging them to participate in the nationwide walk-out for gun control on March 15th. They posted the letter on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to gain attention from their classmates.

“Before the post, it was a little informal, talking to my friends about how we would lead the walk-out. We wanted to make sure it would happen at this school,” Marin says. “There’s actually a social justice leaders club at the high school. I’m not a huge part of it just because I don’t have time Thursday mornings, but I’m friends with a lot of the girls in that club. We got a group together to plan the walk-out, and then Joe and I decided to post our own statement to get it out to the people who aren’t really involved and hopefully get more people involved.”

Marin encourages high school students to use their social media platforms to enact change. “Don’t worry about being controversial and don’t worry about other people not liking you,” she says. “In order for change to happen, you have to be willing to speak out your opinion.”

Can I get in trouble?

When it comes to political activism, a lot of high school students are understandably hesitant because they don’t want to be penalized by their high school because that could affect their college admissions. Fortunately, your high school is legally only allowed to penalize you for certain types of political activism.

“The controlling case for this is Tinker V. Des Moines,” explains Bergen. In this case, a group of high school students wore black armbands to school to show their support for a truce in the Vietnam War. The principal of the high school tried to suspend students for wearing these armbands, and the case was eventually taken to the Supreme Court, who ruled that suspending students for wearing armbands violates their First Amendment right to freedom of expression.

“The Supreme Court said students don’t have to check their political rights at the door,” Bergen says. “But the students’ rights to freedom of expression have to be weighed against everyone else’s right to be educated. Does your political statement disrupt the school day? You have rights, but they can be outweighed if your protest rises to to disrupt the business of the school, which is to educate students.”

If you are interested in learning more about your right to protest as a high school student, the American Civil Liberties Union created a one-hour Q&A video about students’ rights. In it, they explain the extent to which your school legally can penalize you for participating in a walkout: “Because the law in most places requires students to go to school, schools can discipline you for missing class. But what they can’t do is discipline you more harshly because of the political nature of or the message behind your action.”

If your protest takes place outside of school, then your rights are essentially the same as any other citizen, and your school should not be able to penalize you.

What should I do now?

If you still have a couple years left of high school, then chances are you’re going to start seeing a lot more political activism within the school than you did in the past few years.

“After the Parkland shooting and how we’ve experienced a lot of high schoolers leading this movement and standing out to talk about the cause, I think it’ll encourage a lot of young people to get involved too and to educate themselves,” Marin says. “Definitely if I had four more years of high school, I would continue to be more involved.”

So educate yourself and activate yourself as an engaged citizen: Learn about issues that interest you and don’t limit yourself to the opinions of those around you. Do your research, listen to different sides of the argument and make a change. Political activism and being politically active doesn’t start the first November that you’re 18. It can start right here, right now.

Mel B Says A Spice Girls Reunion Is Happening & I Really Really Really Wanna Zig-A-Zig-Ah

I don’t know about you, but my life could use a little bit of spicing up.

Even though Victoria Beckham had previously told Vogue that the Spice Girls were not going on tour, Mel B seemed far more open to the possibility when chatting with Us Weekly. “…we are definitely going to do stuff this year, that is for sure,” she said.

Hmm. Those sound like touring words to me! Or maybe new music? General girl power badassery?

Originally, Mel B had said that the Spice Girls would be attending the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle (which would be full-on ICONIC). Later, Mel C said they weren’t invited. Way to get us excited, Scary.

The Spice Girls recently reunited after six years and had us squealing after seeing this picture of them together.

Love my girls!!! So many kisses!!! X Exciting x #friendshipneverends #girlpower

A post shared by Victoria Beckham (@victoriabeckham) on

Mel B said that her friends picked up right where they left off. “We are still the same, still exactly the same. Victoria turned up in black, I turned up in leopard print, my coat. Geri had her red hair going on and Mel C, actually Mel C was very lady like which was quite funny. Baby still had a blue little coat on, we were all kind of the same. We styled ourselves and we still kind of do.”

As the Spice Girls said themselves, “Friendship never ends!”

This is one piece of 90’s nostalgia I am FULLY invested in. I’m so excited to see what Ginger, Posh, Sporty, Scary, and Baby come up with in the next few years!

7 Moments From The 'Rise' Premiere That Are Guaranteed To Thrill Theatre Nerds

0
0

Last night, spring’s newest show, Rise, premiered on NBC. The series, which stars Josh Radnor as small-town drama teacher Lou Mazzuchelli, follows what happens when students from all different backgrounds come together to put on a production of the musical Spring Awakening. While the show has received mostly positive reviews, it sure drums up feelings of nostalgia in anyone who was involved with their high school drama club (myself included).

But beyond nostalgia and touchy-feely TV, Rise offers something that many hard-core theatre nerds (again, myself included) have been hungering after for a long time: representation of theatre in mainstream pop culture. So, here are seven moments from the premiere episode that are guaranteed to thrill theatre nerds!

1. Hamilton makes an appearance about five minutes in.

GIF made by Sarah Shevenock

These days you can’t talk about theatre without mentioning the juggernaut that is Hamilton. So, of course, it wasn’t surprising that Mr. Mazzu’s daughter was listening to the cast album while doing her homework—especially since one of Rise’s producers also produced Hamilton.

2. Speaking of Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda contributed a song to the premiere.

GIF made by Sarah Shevenock

As Entertainment Weeklyreports, Lin-Manuel Miranda (yes, the LMM of Hamilton-fame) contributed a musical number to the premiere episode. Early on in the episode, football player Robbie raps (and catches Mr. Mazzu’s attention) at a pep rally. Those rhymes he was spitting? They are a Lin-Manuel original.

3. There are Broadway actors and theatre alums all over the place!

As someone who loves theatre, I always feel a sense of pride when someone I've seen on stage lands a role in a large film or television project—and Rise is no exception. Tony nominee Stephanie J. Block (Falsettos, Anything Goes) stars as Patricia Saunders, Simon’s conservative mother; Sean Grandillo (who was actually in the Broadway revival of Spring Awakening!) plays Jeremy, Simon’s co-star; and Damon J. Gillespie (football player Robbie) had roles in Newsies and Aladdin.

4. We are getting covers of some Top 40 hits and Broadway classics.

One of the best parts of a musical TV show is all of the songs that come with it. Just like its predecessors Smash and Glee, Rise will be releasing tracks from each episode. According to Playbill, music from the episodes will come out the Friday before new episodes air. Check out some highlights from last night’s episode below.

5. Spring Awakening gets a moment.

GIF made by Sarah Shevenock

Musical theatre nerds (or MTNs, for short) have long been familiar with the angsty genius that is Spring Awakening but now, the mainstream public is learning all about this musical. Based off of Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play about teens discovering sexuality, Spring Awakening won the Best Musical Tony in 2007 and had a revival in 2015. Not a traditional musical by any means, Spring Awakening’s new 15 minutes of fame is helping those less versed in the ways of theatre, see how diverse musical theatre can be.

6. Mr. Mazzu schooling Coach Strickland in the art of proper theatre terminology.

GIF made by Sarah Shevenock

In only one episode, we have already been given what I’m sure will be one of Rise’s most iconic lines. As football Coach Strickland is trying to keep Robbie from joining the drama club, he makes a grave mistake: he calls Spring Awakening a play, instead of a musical. Not to worry theatre fans—Mr. Mazzu corrects him with the oh-so-sassy line “Actually, musicals are typically referred to as shows, not plays.” YOU GO, MR. MAZZU!!

7. We have a musical series back on our TVs!!!!!!

Image from Giphy

Smash, and Glee for what it’s worth, were widely loved by musical theatre fans. In the years since those shows ended, television has been lacking a certain musical flair. And while Rise looks to be different in tone from its predecessors, it’s still a musical television series, something all MTNs have been craving.

Make sure to catch Rise when it moves to its normal time slot, Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC.

Dua Lipa Had To Cancel Her Tour Dates With Bruno Mars To Get Oral Surgery

Getting your wisdom teeth removed: for the average young adult, it’s basically a rite of passage. It’s painful and frightening, and can even be a little funny (have you seen some of these aftermath videos?).

For Dua Lipa, the need for oral surgery to remove her wisdom teeth couldn't come at a worse time. Eek!

Lipa's surgery comes in the middle of Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic World Tour, where she is the opening artist. She has canceled two performances in Brisbane on March 14-15. The "New Rules" singer sent her regrets to fans on social media, sharing a video where she is seen holding an ice pack to her cheek to help ease the pain.

The London-born artist claimed her rise to fame in 2017 with her self-titled LP Dua Lipa, which included hits like “New Rules,"“Blow Your Mind (Mwah)," and “IDGAF." The album led to a record-breaking five nominations at the 2018 BRIT Awards, which took place on February 21. She was nominated for British Artist Video of the Year, British Single, and Mastercard British Album of the Year, and won British Solo Female Artist and British Breakthrough Act. Lipa has gotten the most BRITA Awards Nominations ever for a female solo artist.

We're wishing her a safe and speedy recovery so she can get back to what she does best.

Her self-titled tour to promote her LP will resume in Hong Kong on May 1st, and she will make her way to the U.S. over the summer.

Nina Dobrev Is Coming Back To TV & I Am Totally Here For It

Nina Dobrev parted from the TV world last year after leaving The CW's The Vampire Diaries. Dobrev has not been part of the show since season six, and she confirmed the news to fans on Instagram that she and Michael Trevino would be exiting.

Since leaving The Vampire Diaries, Dobrev has been raging through the movie screen. Her recent roles includexXx: Return of Xander Cage, the remake of Flatliners, and an indie comedy called Crashpad. She also has plans for more upcoming indie movies, including Dog Days, Departures, and Lucky Day.

Dearest TVD Family, I've just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries. I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn't just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there's still so much more to come before the season finale in May. Elena fell in love not once, but twice, with two epic soulmates, and I myself made some of the best friends I'll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever. There's more to come before we wrap this up, and I promise you'll get to hear all about my experiences over the next month as we approach the season finale (I have given an exclusive interview for the June issue of SELF Magazine that I am excited for you to see!), but until then I invite you to hop on the roller coaster ride that is Elena Gilbert's life and join me as I celebrate her and prepare to say goodbye to her -- and to my work family -- as I move on to the next chapter of my life. I want to share this goodbye with all of you (this weekend's pictures were just the beginning). You, the wonderful fandom who gave more love, support and passion than anyone could have ever imagined seven years ago, when a young Degrassi girl from Canada showed up in LA to audition for 'that Twilight TV show.' ;-) I love you all. Fasten your seatbelts. If you think you know what's coming, you don't. Love, Nina

A post shared by Nina Dobrev (@nina) on

Now, Dobrev is working on her return to television in CBS's new comedy, Fam. According to Deadline, the former vampire will be playing a character named Clem,a funny, grounded young woman recently engaged to the love of her life, Jay. Unexpectedly, Clem’s younger half-sister Shannon (played by Odessa Aldon) shows up at Clem’s door in an attempt to escape their awful father. There’s one problem: Clem has lied to everyone, including her fiancé, that her father is dead. It is up to Clem to navigate the webs of her embarrassing family while keeping Jay by her side.

Fam’s Clem provides a more light-hearted role for Dobrev, something she was looking for after leaving TVD. “I’ve always wanted to take big risks. I started Vampire Diaries when I was 20, and I was playing a young teenage girl,” she explained. “I grew with the show and I wanted to continue to grow outside of it.”

She added, “I wanted to prove everyone wrong who said I would play this one role my whole life or be stuck playing younger roles.”

With her new movie parts already causing buzz, hopefully Fam’s Clem will be the exciting TV role she’s been waiting for.

Netflix Admits to Paying 'The Crown's Queen Elizabeth Less Than Prince Philip

0
0

Although it's been an oncoming issue, Hollywood’s equal wage issue erupted earlier this year, after whistleblowers initiated a Google spreadsheet that revealed the deep-rooted wage discrepancies in the entertainment industry. Like television writers and producers, actors aren’t immune to wage inequality. Following the news that Michelle Williams earned 1,500 times less than her co-star Mark Wahlberg (where Williams basically had to save the day in the wake of Kevin Spacey's allegations), Netflix apparently didn’t get the hint that women want pay parity. The company just admitted to paying Claire Foy, who played Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown (i.e. the backbone of the series), was paid less than her co-star Matt Smith.

While Foy donned royal garments for two seasons of The Crown, Vanity Fair explains that she didn’t make as much as her costar Smith, who played Prince Philip. Although Foy hasn’t starred on the show since season 2, Netflix and the show’s creative director are just now acknowledging this issue.

Suzanne Mackie, the creative director of the show, reveals to NBC News that Smith was paid more than Foy because he was more famous, due to his role on Doctor Who. Regardless of Smith’s notoriety before The Crown, the television series still focused on the Queen, and subsequently Foy. (After all, it doesn’t really make sense to pay an actress who portrayed a titular role less than the supporting character.)

Though Smith may have won a bulkier paycheck from this gig at Netflix, the Huffington Post explains that Foy won a Golden Globe for her performance in The Crown (which, TBH, should prove that fame shouldn’t be the prevailing criteria of an actor’s salary).

Nevertheless, Mackie is attempting to amend this injustice, telling Variety, “Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen.” After all, it only makes sense that Foy should have the most substantial salary—seeing as the show is about Queen Elizabeth, so there wouldn’t be a show without the actress who plays the Queen.

Because the show will no longer star Foy, a lot of fans believe this is a lackluster gesture to try to stifle this controversy aren’t amused by Netflix’s gesture.

One Twitter user writes, “Imagine playing the Queen in a show called 'The Crown' and getting paid less than your male counterpart...! Shame on you Netflix!”

Whereas, another person tweeted, “and Netflix needs to give Claire Foy the appropriate credit. The Crown is a huge success today because of her. it was Foy's performance of Queen Elizabeth that made this show happen, nothing else. she deserves a fucking huge salary for that.”

Still, The Crown fans aren’t the only ones who aren’t enthralled with Netflix’s attempt to fix the gender-wage gap. While the Queen herself (Foy) hasn’t commented on this issue, actresses have spoken up about pay equity for years, and for good reason. As The New York Times explains, Netflix is recasting the show as it prepares for the third season, which won’t help Foy attain her well-deserved raise.

According to Vanity Fair, the entertainment industry’s quoting system is defiantly organized to pay women less than their male costars. Though not everyone is convinced that Netflix plans to pay the queens of the company what they deserve, we hope that the company will adopt an equal pay system across all their productions.

Thousands Of Students Walked Out Of Class To Protest Gun Violence — But The Conversation Is Far From Over

0

Students across the country took a stand against gun violence on Wednesday, March 14th, opting to walk out of their classrooms at 10 am for 17 minutes to stand in solidarity with the 17 victims of February's deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) High School in Parkland, FL.  Following the morning's protests, the hashtag #NationalWalkOutDay has been top trending as more and more young people and their voting-aged peers have frank discussions about what it means to meaningfully protest and what can best be done to prevent another tragedy like what happened in Parkland.

The shooting was, sadly and unfortunately, one of many that have ravaged schools and businesses across America in the last few years. Students wanted to take a stand to show that this sort of unnecessary carnage will no longer be tolerated and have organized independently — with the guidance of the survivors of the Parkland shooting — to demand changes to gun laws in the United States. One goal of the protest is to push for teenagers to be unable to purchase assault rifles.

According to USA Today, students in Parkland gathered on the football field chanting "We want change!" as they ignored administrators requests to head back into the school. They joined those participating at the nearby middle school in a two mile walk to a memorial that was set up for the victims.

Delaney Tarr, one student activist and survivor from MSD tweeted "#NeverAgain," promising to join the walk out and continue fighting in honor of victims of gun violence.

More than 3,000 schools across the country participated in the walkout in protest of the ease with which guns are purchased and brought into a school and to protest congress members who they perceive to have a greater allegiance to the National Rifle Association (NRA) than they do to their constituents.

At some walk-outs, students engaged in different more-local demonstrations. Some had additional moments of silence for gun violence victims from their areas, others laid down to further illustrate their concern over the realities and risks of gun violence.

While schools (teachers and students) were participating, representatives and activists on Capitol Hill were delivering speech after speech about gun violence and the need for ratification.

The One Thing That Bonded Meghan Markle & Prince Harry Will Tug At Your Heartstrings

Since Megan Markle and Prince Harry first announced their wedding date, we’ve been obsessing over this royal power couple. Beyond their feminist goals and swoon-worthy moments, we thought Markle and Prince Harry couldn’t get any more adorable. Of course, they had to prove us wrong and give us even more #relationahipgoals. As E! News explains, apparently heartbreak might've been behind helping Markle and Prince Harry develop a stronger relationship.

That’s right, heartache helped this royal couple (because Markle has always been a queen, don’t @ me) fall in love. E! News explains that, because Markle’s parents divorced when she was only a 6-year-old and Prince Harry was only 8 when his parents split up, the two developed a stronger connection to one another. According to E! News, Prince Harry and Markle maybe have bonded so quickly because they’re both “offspring of couples who fell out of love,” which could explain why the duo has been inseparable.

The couple rapidly fell for each other last year, and even their friends knew they were meant for one another. E! News reports Prince Harry’s friend was confident that Markle was the perfect person for him after their third date, in Botswana. (We’re still bitter that all our third date are inferior to this royal couple’s third date.)

While some have criticized the couple for their short relationship, it’s clear that these two are in love. POPSUGAR reveals that Prince Harry has defended their expedited relationship by saying, “The fact that I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly is confirmation to me that all the stars are aligned." Why can't we find a guy like Harry on Tinder?

Regardless of the reason Prince Harry and Mackle became so attracted to each other, Marie Claire claims that family is crucial for both of them. Because they both grew up amidst family breakups, their connection likely only reinforced the couple’s family mentality.

Aside from E! News’s theory on what sparked Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s instantaneous connection, we can’t wait for their wedding so their relationship can grow even stronger. (P.S., we’re still waiting for our invitations to the royal wedding.)

5 Makeup Tutorials for Hooded Eyes

The magic of makeup is undeniable. It’s a tool used to hide unwanted blemishes, enlarge the size of your lips, and make your eyes look bigger and brighter. having the tools––concealer, lip liner or mascara––is only half the battle. The best way to really maximize the power of makeup is to learn from experts.

One particular challenge a lot of women face is using makeup to open up their eyes, especially those women with hooded eyes. Not sure if that’s you? The easiest way to check is to look straight ahead and see if the crease of your eye is visible (that hollow space between your eyebrow bone and eyeball). If you can’t see it, or you can only sort of see it, then you most likely have hooded eyes. Don’t panic, though! Having hooded eyes isn’t the end of the world; it can just make eye makeup a little tough sometimes. So next time you’re looking to switch up your makeup routine, watch these YouTube makeup gurus explain how to apply makeup in the most flattering way for your eye shape.

1. A list of do’s and dont’s

Everyone loves a good list, so when it comes to makeup application, having one to refer to is almost a necessity. If you’re new to makeup, it might be a good idea to watch this video before any of the other tutorials below. Why? Because sometimes watching someone show what techniques are right and wrong makes it easier for you to decipher if you’re on the right path when it comes time to doing your own makeup.

2. The straight line technique

Wayne Goss, a longtime YouTube makeup guru, knows almost everything there is to know about makeup. He has tutorials covering everything from celebrity makeup tutorials to makeup tricks just for men. One particular tutorial, the straight line technique, teachers viewers how to use eyeshadow to give the illusion of a more lifted eye.

3. Halo eyeshadow for hooded eyes

Alissa Ashley talks about some of the tips and tricks she’s learned as a makeup artist as part of a series she calls, “Bush Bootcamp.” If you’re looking for a video that breaks down everything step by step, even clarifying which brush to use for each step, this is the one. One tip she uses is to put brighter, lighter colors to the inner corner of the eye, then build towards the outer part of the eye with darker colors. This method opens up the eye and can also be used to create a smokey eye look.

4. Sephora’s hooded eye tips and tricks

If you’re a big fan of Sephora, you need to check out this hooded eye how-to tutorial with the Sephora Pro Team. Finding the right spot to put eyeshadow on your eye can be super confusing while applying a smokey eye, and this video clarifies everything. You’ll learn easy-to-follow, simple tricks that professionals themselves use everyday. For example, professionals work around the orbital bone of the eye to play up every individual’s bone structure. In this video, by adding a darker color underneath that orbital bone (the crease between the bone and your eyeball) the makeup artist creates a deeper eye socket.

5. Glitter cut crease for hooded eyes

Makeup trends are always changing, and right now, the glitter cut crease is definitely having a moment. For a lot of women with hooded eyes, this look can be hard to achieve. But this tutorial shows you that it’s totally possible. For Destinie, this look was made a lot easier with the help of tape. A lot of makeup artists will use this same technique when applying eye makeup too. Instead of trying to eyeball where to put your eyeshadow, the tape will stop you from going too far out.

From beginner tutorials, to advanced these tutorials will have you completely covered when it comes to your eye makeup routine. Next time you’re getting ready with your friends, you’re going to be the go-to gal for eyeshadow tips and tricks!

Amid Rumors Petra Collins is Dating Justin Theroux, Her BFF Selena Gomez Unfollows Her

Selena Gomez seems to be dealing with Justin-related drama — but this time, it doesn't have to do with the Biebz, and instead, her friend Jennifer Aniston's ex Justin Theroux.

Jen and Justin ended their two-and-a-half year marriage a month ago, and reports have already surfaced about him dating again. The mystery girlfriend? According to the Daily Mail, 25-year-old artist Petra Collins.

Here's where things get tricky.

Selena is good friends with Collins, and the two have even worked together professionally a number of times (Collins directed Selena's Fetish video last year, for example).

That's why it was so surprising when Selena unfollowed Collins on Instagram earlier this week.

Perhaps it's all a big misunderstanding, but it does make sense that she'd ~side~ with Jen, since the two have been good friends for awhile.

5 Social Media Theories About What The Future Holds For The Pearsons On 'This Is Us'

Tuesday's season two finale of This Is Us was emotional for a number of reasons, but mostly because it meant the show wouldn't be back until fall of 2018. The showrunners made it even harder on fans by leaving a few cliffhangers: Kevin taking off with Beth's cousin Zoe, Kate talking to Toby about his medication, and Randall telling Tess "It's time to go see her," only for her to reply, "I'm not ready."

Ready for what? Who's "her?" Are Kevin and Zoe together? Where's Beth? Is Toby okay? Is Kate okay? IS ANYONE OKAY?

I'm certainly not — and the rest of the internet doesn't seem to be either. Twitter users have already begun sharing their theories for the Pearson family's future, and some of them make a lot of sense.

1.

Deja being in jail for seriously harming or even killing Beth seems to be a popular theory.

2.

But even if Deja is in jail, some are hoping it's not for hurting Beth.

3.

Remember the kid Tess was seen working with earlier this season? He could be Deja's son.

4.

OMG, ANNIE.

5.

Or maybe what we saw doesn't actually happen at all? I'm not sure what to think, but I do know that in the meantime, I'll be counting down the days to September.

6 Places to Meet Guys on Campus After Getting Out of a Relationship

After a breakup with your SO, it can be difficult to get back out there in the dating world. You may want to start dating again or at least begin searching for someone to hang out with, but the real problem is that we don’t always know where these potential candidates could be on campus. If you are struggling to find someone on your campus, here are some suggestions for where to look.

1. Parties or bars

This is the most typical place to meet guys. Attend a party with your friends, whether it’s at a fraternity or the apartment of the girl who sits next to you in your 8 a.m. math class. Hannah, a sophomore at the University of Michigan, suggests going to mixers if you’re in a sorority.

“Or you can always go to bars,” she says. “Make a lot of friends. Who knows, maybe they’ll introduce you to someone or you’ll end up being into someone you didn’t think you would be.”

2. Sports games

The idea of going to a game may not be the first thing you think of, but there are always other students there as well. Not only can you cheer on your school’s team, but you may end up sitting next to a guy you’ve never seen on campus before.

“I’ve heard from some of my friends that great places to meet people on campus are at intramural sports events,” says Liz, a junior at UW-Stout. Check the sports schedule and go to an event, whether it’s soccer, volleyball, lacrosse or even gymnastics.

3. Dorm common areas

Your dorm most likely has a common room or lounge for everyone in the building, and there are plenty of spots on campus specifically meant for hanging out with others. LMU senior Sierra believes it’s a great way to meet guys.

“I’ve met several guys playing pool in my dorm lounge. It’s really a mystery where they all hide out!” she says. Take a trip to one of the lounges on campus under the guise of doing homework, or meet a friend there if you were planning on getting together anyways. A spot where lots of students frequent is somewhere you may want to be if you are actively looking to meet someone.

4. Campus activities

Maybe it’s bingo, a concert or trivia about your favorite TV show. There are always events going on around campus to attend and have fun. When you’re there, maybe you’ll win a prize and a date with that cutie who almost beat you in the game.

“Really, go to those lame [campus] events. There are tons of guys there,” says Sierra.

Even if you don’t meet a potential SO, it’s still good to go to campus events as much as possible to get the most out of your experience. You could just meet a new friend. “It never hurts to have friends [at college],” says Hannah.

5. The library

If you spend a lot of hours studying in the library, then you may notice some familiar faces around. Finding someone who also frequents the library to get work done could be the start to a new relationship.

“Even if you’re searching for your books at the library, that [certain] someone could come into your life completely unannounced and knock you off your socks,” says Liz. You don’t need to dress up every time you study, but consider saying hi to the cute guy at the table over.

6. Clubs and organizations

When you join a club on campus, you’ll meet other students who share the same interests. Alex*, a senior at The College of William and Mary, met two guys from student organizations.

“It’s really great because we already know that we have at least one common interest, but still have the ability to learn more about each other. It’s also nice because we have a lot of built-in hang out time when we attend events together,” she says.

After visiting all of these places on campus, you may still be without a potential SO because you just couldn’t find anyone. But don’t give up! Hannah believes if you’re constantly “trying to meet guys,” you’ll miss out on a lot of other things going on.

“There’s nowhere out there where potential SO’s are hiding, and if you view every guy as a potential SO, you’re just going to drive yourself crazy,” she says.

Liz agrees, but says you should remember that you have just gotten out of a relationship. “It’s important to first take care of yourself and make sure that you are actually ready for a new relationship before trying to find ‘The One,’” Liz says. “I think as soon as you are truly ready for a new partner, it’ll all happen in the blink of an eye.”

As you check out these spots on campus, keep an eye out. You could be hanging out in the common room for hours, but maybe you’ll bump into someone in the dining hall or try and check out the same book as a cute guy you haven’t noticed before in the library.

A college campus is big enough that no matter where you look, you are bound to find someone. So once you’re ready to get back out there after ending a relationship, know that you don’t necessarily have to be at a certain place to meet your potential SO.

Northwestern University Was On Lockdown For Two Hours After False Reports Of A Gunman On Campus

As thousands of students protested gun violence by walking out of schools across the U.S. on Wednesday, students at Northwestern University were placed under lockdown after reports of a man with a gun on campus.

According to theChicago Tribune, a man called the Evanston, Illinois police and claimed he shot his girlfriend in Northwestern's Englehart Hall. After dispatching "scores of heavily armed officers," police eventually said they found no evidence of a victim, scene or gunman. The incident is now being labeled a case of "swatting," a false call to emergency services in an attempt to draw a large police response to a certain address.

Despite there being no gunman on campus, people at Northwestern were still under the impression that was the case for around two hours. Many on campus, along with their loved ones, took to social media to express their fear. Some were also calling for gun control.

Police are reportedly investigating the false report.

2. "...But I'm not going to drink THAT much. I know my limits!"

Nice try. You're not fooling anybody.

3. "We definitely won't get hungover. We're better at drinking than that."

4. "I seriously need a tan."

5. "My hair is going to look so beachy and Blake Lively-esque. For once."

Or not.

6. "But I've been working out, so at least my beach body will look banging."

7. "And I'm going to be sure not to drunk eat and ruin that beach body."

But then there was pizza.

8. "I can definitely put on my makeup for tonight after drinking on the beach all day."

What could go wrong?

9. "I'm not going to spend that much money; boys will buy us drinks!"

But really, kiss your savings goodbye. You didn't like money anyway, right?

10. "I really feel like I'm going to meet a great guy here!"

If "good guy" means "guy who is looking for a dance floor make-out and nothing more," then yes, you will meet a good guy. Many, in fact.

11. "Oh well, at least I have margaritas."

And daiquiris. And piña coladas. So many new friends to keep you company!

12. "Oh, and obviously I'll be sure to get my assignments done before we go back to class..."

LOL NOPE.

13. Can spring break just last forever, please?!

HC Wake-Up Call: New Trump Advisor, Banking Deregulation Bill Passes & Fox News Is Being Sued

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Trump Names CNBC Commentator Larry Kudlow Top White House Economic Advisor

Kudlow was not only the host of CNBC's The Kudlow Report, but also a conservative media analyst who previously served as President Trump's "informal economic adviser" during the 2016 campaign, CNN reports. He will take the role Gary Cohn left earlier this month after disagreements with Trump on tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

"Larry Kudlow was offered, and accepted, the position of assistant to the president for economic policy and director of the National Economic Council," White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement

According to The Associated Press, like Cohn, Kudlow opposes the recent trade tariffs, but is "in accord" with Trump's policies.

Sanders said she will announce a timeline for the role's transition soon.

The Senate Passed A Banking Deregulation Bill

In a 67 to 31 vote, the senate passed legislation that eases regulations on large parts of the banking industry. The New York Times said the bill represents "the most significant changes to the rules that were put in place after the 2008 financial crisis."

Proponents of the bill — which was supported by both Republicans and some Democrats — say it intends to help smaller banks.

Those against it believe rolling back the rules is dangerous because they were put in place to prevent another crisis.

The bill will now be sent to the House, and if approved, to President Trump.

Seth Rich's Parents Are Suing Fox News Over Their Retracted Story

After Democratic National Committee staff member Seth Rich was fatally shot in Washington, D.C. in 2016 during what police have called a botched robbery, Fox News ran a later discredited story that resulted in a number of conspiracy theories.

The story suggested that federal investigators had evidence proving Rich leaked DNC emails to WikiLeaks, and he was murdered as a result. Fox News retracted the stories six days after publishing it, but according to POLITICO, Rich's parents are now suing the network, reporter Malia Zimmerman and Dallas businessman and Fox News guest Ed Butowsky.

Fox News and the individuals named in the lawsuit are accused of "seizing on Rich’s death in an effort to exonerate President Donald Trump of allegations that his campaign colluded with the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 election,"POLITICO reports.

According to the Washington Post, this is the second time Fox News is being sued over the story.
