HC Wake-Up Call: Florida Senate Passes Measure to Arm School Staff, Bumble Bans Gun Photos &'Dumpster Fire' Has Officially Been Added to the Dictionary

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

The Florida State Senate Has Passed a Measure That Will Allow School Staff to Be Armed

The Huffington Post reports that on Monday, the Florida Senate passed a measure 20-18 that would create a program to allow school administrators (though not "instructional personnel," a.k.a. most teachers) in the state to carry guns at school. The measure was passed as part of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act — the same one from which lawmakers removed an amendment that would have completely banned assault weapons in Florida. The bill, which also includes an increase in the minimum age required to buy firearms and a $25 million provision to rebuild the building at Stoneman Douglas where the shooting occurred, still needs to pass the state's House this week before it will become law.

Bumble Bans Users From Posting Photos With Weapons

In response to the tragic shooting in Parkland, Florida, dating app Bumble has announced it will ban users who post photos posing with guns or other dangerous weapons to their profiles.

"Online behavior can both mirror and predict how people treat each other in the real world," the company said in a statement to BuzzFeed News on Monday. "Bumble has a responsibility to our users and a larger goal to encourage accountability offline. As mass shootings continue to devastate communities across the country, it’s time to state unequivocally that gun violence is not in line with our values, nor do these weapons belong on Bumble."

The new policy will, however, exclude military service men and women if they are holding the firearms while in uniform.

The Word 'Dumpster Fire' Has Officially Been Added to the Dictionary

If you watched last night's Bachelor finale, chances are you may have used the word "dumpster fire" more than once throughout — and appropriately, it's one of the 850 newly-introduced words added to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary on Monday. Also among the new additions? Other timely words like mansplain, glamping, self-care and welp.

What to look out for...

Speaking of The Bachelor, the drama returns tonight at 8 p.m. with the "After the Final Rose" episode — and we won't spoil anything, but let's just say we have a feeling things are about to get even juicier.

Pizza Hut Inspired Sneakers Are Called Pie Tops & I'm Just Wondering What the World Has Come To

Have you ever wanted to rep your favorite pizza chain on your feet in a bold and fresh way? No? Me neither, but apparently now you can anyway.

In the spirit of March Madness, (which I'm assuming is a pretty big month for pizza), Pizza Hut has announced the Pie Tops II sneakers —the smart shoe we never knew we kneaded. Soon to be available in the delectable shades "golden wheat" and "marinara sauce red", the second edition of these Pie Tops will offer women and teen sizes for the first time, because #inclusion.

Created by the "Shoe Surgeon" Dominic Chambrone, these freshly baked kicks will grant lucky wearers the ability to order pizza at the push of a button. And, when that pizza delivery inevitably arrives at the door, wearers can just pause the big game with their Bluetooth-connected shoes as well. The future is here folks and it smells like oregano.

To keep everything super ~exclusive~, only 50 pairs of Pie Tops will be available for purchase starting March 19 at HBX.

Pizza puns aside, I just feel like these shoes are just a little too cheesy for me.

WTF Is Vero & Why Did All Your Friends Join Then Leave It So Suddenly?

$

0

So... WTF is a "Vero," and why did it blow up, indoctrinate all your friends and then get put on blast so fast?

Well, if you're fluent in Esperanto, you'll know that Vero means "truth." But if you're a social media junkie, you'll know that Vero is essentially one big love child of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram—and it may be your ticket to a more "authentic" social media experience (or a way to escape your less-than-tech-savvy parents and relatives before they catch on). That is, for those who can get past the company's ~shady~ background.

Born in 2015, Vero is not exactly new to the social media game, but it's certainly a fresh face. Just like its competitors, it's a way for users to create and share content while following along with others in their network. NYMag reports that the app snagged the #1 free download spot in the Apple App Store, however, it has now fallen down the charts quite a bit (possibly due to the #DeleteVero movement?)

Regardless, this app is definitely making its rounds, and although it's not quite clear why the app is suddenly so popular three years later, it may be due to some of the features Vero boasts in their Manifesto (not at all ominous.) According to the Manifesto, Vero aims to create an "authentic" social media experience that allows you to "be yourself," no catfish welcome. You can control who sees the content you share, because you can categorize your connections by either close friends, friends or acquaintances. You may also accept followers to your account and follow others. Your feed stops right where you left off, so no wonky algorithms or data mining will toss in posts from over a week ago (ones that you're too afraid to "like" at the risk of emanating stalker-ish vibes).

And perhaps in what is the most exciting aspect of the app for some users, there are no ads. Nada. Don't believe me? Take a look at Vero's business model:

"Unlike most of our competitors, Vero’s business model isn’t based on serving advertisements. As a subscription-based service, our users are our customers, not the product we sell to advertisers. Our subscription model will allow us to keep Vero advertising-free, and to focus solely on delivering the best social experience instead of trying to find new ways to monetize our users’ behavior or tricking them back into the app with notifications."

Refinery29 reports that the first million people to join the Vero app will have access to it for free, and although the number of people joined has currently surpassed a million, Vero has extended their "free for life" offer due to "extraordinary demand."

Okay, so this all sounds pretty great, right? Well, according to NYMag, their digging has uncovered some sketchy fine print in Vero's terms and conditions, along with an even sketchier past from the app's co-founder and CEO Ayman Hariri. Pulling one particularly puzzling (and kind of scary?) quote from the terms and conditions, a user may use Vero if they grant the app “a limited, royalty-free, sublicensable, transferable, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, worldwide license to use, reproduce, modify, publish, list information regarding, translate, distribute, syndicate, publicly perform, publicly display, make derivative works of, or otherwise use your User Content.” (Uh, come again?)

NYMag assures that although this sounds frightening, Vero is essentially "no more and no less safe than all the other social media platforms you’re already using and considering replacing with Vero."

What is frightening, however, is the fact that CEO Ayman Hariri is currently in the hot seat for the controversy surrounding his family’s Saudi Arabian construction company, where thousands of workers were reportedly unpaid for months and weren't provided with enough food and water, according to Time.

Considering the current social media climate, these changes may just be exactly what all us social media-lovers need in an app. Unfortunately, the reports on Hariri's past are steering plenty of users moral compasses in a different direction. (This is some high-key "milkshake ducking.")

After proving his devotion to Gucci for years, the fashion giant has finally announced a collaboration with British heartthrob, Harry Styles.

Just a few days ago Gucci announced via Instagram their upcoming project with Styles, giving fans just the slightest peak at Harry petting an adorable pooch while wearing a gingham suit with a bee on the sleeve cuff.

As of yet, there's no word on when the full collab will be revealed and we're not sure if Harry will be involved in any design — or if he'll simply be the spokesmodel for the campaign. Either way, knowing these two powerhouses, it's going to be spectacular.

Naturally, fans are already super hyped:

Now if only we could get a One Direction x Gucci reunion.

'The Bachelor': Arie Slid Into Bekah M.'s DMs After the Show Ended & I'm Screaming

It’s one thing to receive a text from your ex after you’ve broken up, but it’s another to get multiple DMs from a guy who broke off his engagement for another woman on reality television. Bekah Martinez, famously known for her young age on the show, tweeted some pretty juicy screenshots during the jaw-dropping season finale. It turns out Arie sent her DMs at least twice during the first week of February, around the time Bekah’s missing person news broke the internet. Referring to the surprising messages, Bekah tweeted, “dm’ing your ex is a good look too.”

I wonder how many exes he ended up messaging…

Twitter must’ve been thinking the same thing, because Bekah’s revenge tweet received almost 1,000 retweets and over 300 comments. Check out some of the best reactions below:

What It Really Means When He Can’t Stay Hard

$

0

Let’s face it, ladies — if you're straight and sexually active, chances are you’ve probably encountered a situation where the guy you were hooking up with couldn’t get hard. We know how it feels. For all of us, it’s bizarre, frustrating and quite honestly, can make us feel self-conscious. What the hell is happening?

First off, if you’ve ever questioned, “Is it me? Is he not attracted to me?” Rest assured, you aren’t the cause of his impotence. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition in which a man is unable to get or maintain an erection, thus preventing him from engaging in sexual intercourse — and it affects nearly 30 million men nationwide. Read below for five causes of ED for a little more clarity the next time bae can’t get hard.

1. Consuming too much alcohol

This one is well-known, so we wanted to get it out of the way right off the bat. “Whiskey dick,” as it’s most commonly known, is actually grounded in a lot of scientific fact. According to a study by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, alcohol is the leading cause of impotence (and other issues that come with sexual dysfunction).

Sexual dysfunction as a result of alcohol dependence refers to a range of issues, including decreased sexual desire, sexual aversion disorder, difficulty in erection, difficulty in orgasm and premature ejaculation. The study notes that this dysfunction is probably due to the fact that alcohol is a depressant, which slows down brain and spinal activity.

So, the next time you come home from the bar and your boyfriend has “whiskey dick,” cut him some slack — his current condition is totally temporary.

2. Smoking tobacco

While smoking any type of drug is a personal decision, tell your guy friends who smoke tobacco that they might want to put down their cigarettes. If lung cancer wasn’t reason enough for them to quit, maybe impotence will be.

According to this study by the Health Priorities Research Group at the University of California, Irvine, there is a higher prevalence of impotence in men who smoke versus men who don’t smoke. This doesn't mean that everytime a guy smokes, he won't be able to get hard. It just means that overall, smokers are more likely to have issues with impotency.

3. Taking prescription or over-the-counter drugs

It’s probably not surprising that prescription medicine could potentially affect a man’s ability to get hard, but it might be surprising to hear that some over-the-counter drugs can interfere with erection, too. What’s more, what kind of drug causes impotence varies from man to man.

Some medicines that may cause impotence are: Benadryl, Zantac, Dramamine, Tagamet, Vistaril, Antivert and Axid. Antidepressants can also lead to impotence, and since depression affects a surprising number of  young adults, we can assume that a decent number of college men are prescribed them. If your boyfriend is having trouble getting (and/or staying) hard for a consecutive period of time, it can’t hurt to ask him if he’s on any medication that could be triggering his ED.

4. Mental health issues

A number of psychological issues can cause ED. While they’re harder to identify and treat, the three most common are anxiety, stress and depression — and in the context of male college students, this makes sense. After all, young adult college students experience increased levels of all three.

Don’t go and self-diagnose him with one of these disorders just because he struggles to get hard on occasion. However, if you truly feel that he might be struggling with a deeper issue, you should reach out to someone in his family, a close friend or a medical professional for help.

5. Problems in your relationship

Although we started this article off by claiming it “isn’t you” who’s causing your boyfriend's ED, in some instances, you could be a part of the problem — but it has nothing to do with how attracted he is to you. An unhealthy emotional relationship will also affect your sexual relationship.

If you and your significant other have intense arguments, trouble communicating, anger issues, and/or some other rift in your relationship, it very well could lead to issues with sexual desire and function. Problems in a relationship, especially at a young age, are never good. Try and work through your issues together, and be sensitive to his impotence.

Whether it be caused by a medical problem, a lifestyle choice or a psychological issue, ED is a real thing that affects many young men across the world. The next time you’re hooking up with a guy and he can’t “keep it up,” try and sympathize with him — and don’t insult yourself in the process. Chances are, the issue has absolutely nothing to do with you.

'The Bachelor's Arie Supposedly Followed His Heart, But I'm Not Buying It

I’ve been an avid watcher of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette since Ben Higgins’ season. For the guilty pleasure show that it is, I’ve loved watching the twisted version of a sped-up fairytale that I ultimately know won’t work out according to historical precedence. Chris Harrison has been a constant companion of mine during times of procrastination, heartbreak and failure. In the past, I’ve dropped everything to watch the season finale and been rewarded with a broadcasted, candy sweet happily ever after through which I could live vicariously.

However, Arie Luyendyk Jr.’s season finale (and honestly most of the season) left me feeling unsettled and uncomfortable in the wake of his ultimate decision to break off his engagement with Becca Kufrin. Throughout the last few weeks, I found myself becoming more critical of Arie’s decisions and explanations. Why did it take him so long to realize Krystal’s double identity and send her home? Why couldn’t Arie communicate his sudden decision to not give Seinne a rose during the one-on-one? Why did he pull Kendall aside during the rose ceremony only to send Tia home, despite his present confusion?

A post shared by bachelorabc (@bachelorabc) on

I don’t think any of us could imagine being his shoes and having to find a future spouse among two dozen highly attractive people. He had to learn to compartmentalize every individual relationship, and then weigh the pros and cons of each like he was investing in a prospective home or buying a car. One mistake could send his soulmate away from the mansion forever without his knowledge. I think many of us judge the process and the contestants too harshly, but Arie made one unforgivable mistake of the heart: he let himself fall deeply in love with two women.

Not only did he hurt Lauren when he proposed to Becca, but he also crushed Becca when he broke off the engagement to pursue a relationship with Lauren. The last 40 minutes of the finale were excruciatingly painful for viewers as we watched an interaction that should’ve been private. I felt uncomfortable watching Becca sit there and realize the web of lies Arie told her during their short time of engagement after the show ended. Claiming to think about Lauren every night before he goes to bed and every morning when he wakes up, Arie had no other explanation for Becca other than he couldn’t give her the love that she deserved.

While I wholeheartedly agree with the prospect of breaking a relationship off to prevent leading someone on (as I’ve been led on myself), I believe Arie should’ve proposed to Lauren in the first place. He could have spared Becca the delayed and much more painful heartbreak by setting more boundaries and spending more time thinking about the future. I really do hope Becca gets swept off her feet by Prince Charming and that Arie learns to reconcile with the consequences of his mistakes.

A Male Gymnast Has Also Accused Larry Nassar Of Sexual Abuse

The first male gymnast has come forward to speak out against former gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar and his sexual abuse, joining a list of over 200 victims, NBC News reports.

Jacob Moore, now an 18-year-old freshman gymnast at the University of Michigan, has come forward to accuse Nassar of sexual abuse that he experienced in April 2016, according to CNN. Seeking treatment for an injured shoulder, Moore instead had his pants pulled down by Nassar, who "administered acupuncture to his genital area, claiming that it would help his shoulder," says CNN.

Moore's attorney also says a young female gymnast was present in the room, whom Nassar asked whether she had seen a male's body part before.

Moore, frustrated by the lack of treatment to his shoulder (which later required surgery), could tell something was very wrong with what had occurred, especially once all the victims started to come forward. Inspired by his sister Kamerin Moore, who provided her statement at Nassar's sentencing in January, the male gymnast decided it was time to come forward with his own story.

"When everything started coming out, I kind of remembered that uncomfortable feeling I had during one of my treatments," Moore Megyn Kelly TODAY on Tuesday during a live interview. When Moore couldn't find any medical evidence connected to what Nassar had performed on his groin to his shoulder, he was shocked.

"I was inspired by my sister and everyone else in this community to come out and help bring change to what allowed this to happen," Moore said. "I don't want (other victims) to be scared to come out because of stigma that guys can't be sexually abused or taken advantage of."

It's sickening what Moore had to experience, but in the case that there are more male athletes who experienced sexual abuse at the hands of Nassar, hopefully, his story will encourage them to come forward.

France Is Likely To Set Their Age Of Consent To 15 & Here's What That Means

$

0

In a new law that has resulted from a debate among French lawmakers, the Washington Post reports, the age of consent in France will now be set at 15.

The announcement comes from Equality Minister Marlène Schiappa, who says that France's government "has decided to set the age at 15" after public outcry against two cases involving sex with 11-year-old girls, according to CNN.

In both cases, a 30-year-old man and a 28-year-old man avoided rape charges as prosecutors couldn't prove that the 11-year-old girls were forced to have sex. The case involving the 30-year-old highlighted the main issue with previous laws, as a French court concluded that the girl had not experienced “constraint, threat, violence or surprise,” France's previous definition of rape according to the Post.

The (painfully obvious) issue? CNN says that current laws would only criminalize sexual acts with children under 15 if prosecutors could prove that the sex was forced.

So, under this proposal, the law "will set the age at which a person cannot agree to any sexual intercourse at 15 and will criminalize any sexual activity with any minor younger than that age," according to CNN. This means that regardless of what was said by the minor 15 or younger, they are unable to provide consent and any sexual act performed by an adult will be classified as rape.

"We want to fix an age in the law below which it's always forbidden to have sex with children, with young girls. Below which it's always considered as a rape," Schiappa said in an interview in 2017, CNN reports.

The new law will be presented on March 21.

4 Food Groups You Should Be Eating Every Day & Where to Find Them on Campus

$

When you’re in high school, most of your meals and snacks tend to come from your house. Your parents’ home-cooked or store-bought meals tend to have a balanced dynamic of all the nutrients your body needs. However, most of us don’t know exactly what the right balance is—that’s what we have our parents for. But, once you’re in college, the transition can be rough if you’re not prepared. Here’s a quick guide to how you can make the best decisions for your body with the foods available on campus.

1. Fats

Believe it or not, fats are an integral part of your diet. They’re healthy too, especially if you choose the right sources. Rather than donuts and other sweets, try nuts, nut butters and oils.

“Extra virgin olive oil, used in food preparation, is an excellent source of monounsaturated fat,” says Allison Arnett, a registered dietitian nutritionist at Yale University. “Olive oil is also offereddaily as a salad dressing in addition to a variety of whole nuts, seeds and nut butter. A small portion of healthy fat such as olive oil, nuts and seeds can help our body absorb the vitamins and minerals in fruit and vegetables.”

Oils, nuts and seeds can also supply one of the most important types of fat you should be eating: omega 3 fatty acids. “Omega 3 fatty acids help support cognitive functioning while unsaturated fats play a role in supporting heart health,” saysJennifer Barnoud,M.S., R.D.N, L.D., at University Health Services (UHS) at The University of Texas at Austin. “You can add flax seed, chia seeds, or walnuts to yogurt, granola, oatmeal, or salads or use small amounts of olive oil based dressings for a daily dose of omega 3s.”

By adding these options to your meal, you’ll not only feel more satisfied, but healthier as well.

2. Protein

Some of the foods we’ve just suggested—nuts and oils—are sources of protein as well (how versatile!).

Arnett recommends that you eat a variety of proteins. “We encourage students to choose primarily vegetables, legumes, whole grains seeds, nuts and natural nut butter which are offered at all meals.” Additional specific options include:

  • Unsweetened Greek yogurt

  • Eggs (two whole eggs daily provide 12g of protein!)

  • Grilled or baked fish, skinless poultry and lean pork (healthier animal protein sources)

If you’re vegetarian or vegan, not to fret. “Omnivores and vegetarians alike can also get protein from beans, lentils, peas, and nut butters,” says Barnoud. “Choosing a variety of protein sources is even more important for vegetarians and vegans since plant-based sources tend not to have all the amino acids our bodies require.”

Students agree that protein is key to a healthy, happy life, such as Jasmine Cui, a sophomore at SUNY Geneseo. "Something I do is I'll take the bun off a burger and just eat the meat. My skin has cleared up and my hair has gotten so strong.”

3. Carbohydrates

It may seem as though most foods provide carbohydrates, but just like fats and proteins, some sources are better than others.

“The best sources of carbohydrates include fruit, vegetables and whole grains,” says Arnett. “Foods such as oats, quinoa, brown rice and whole beans are nutritional powerhouses, offering complex carbohydrates, protein, healthy fat with a rich mineral and vitamin profile.”

Carbohydrates are one of the most important food groups, and they’re more varied than you might think, even in college.

“Choose high fiber complex carbohydrates for heart healthy and long-lasting energy for your brain and muscles,” says Barnoud. “Great examples include oats, whole grain breads and cereals, brown or wild rice, beans, lentils, peas, corn, and potatoes with skin.”

Don't be afraid to try new things and vary your source of carbohydrates!

4. Fruits and veggies

Fruits and veggies are a classic. There’s a reason why you’re told to fill up half your plate with them.

“According to the American College Health Association’s 2017 National College Health Assessment, only 30.5 percent of undergraduate students and 40 percent of graduate students are consuming three or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day,” says Barnoud. “Health experts recommend consuming at least five half-cup servings per day or even more if you have health concerns. Include a 1-cup serving of fruits and vegetables to every meal to regularly consume six servings/day.”

Danie Roberts, a senior at Lasell College, frequently eats fruits and vegetables. "My dining hall allows me to take fruit out, so I always grab a few bananas every time so I don't have to buy any at the grocery store. Perfect for breakfast on the go!”

In addition, eating veggies isn’t so difficult. “Try and eat a veggie with every meal, even if it's just some cucumbers from the salad bar,” Danie suggests.

We’re all busy college students, but we need to prioritize our health just as much as we do our academics, extracurriculars, and social life.

“Often students get too busy juggling multiple responsibilities,” Barnoud says. “This is when nutrition can take a back seat leading to picking up whatever is the most convenient option or even skipping meals. When this becomes a consistent pattern, this can negatively affect your health and your academic performance. Developing good time management skills and getting to knowing the quick and easy healthy options while stress levels are low is key to your health and academic success.”

Hopefully, this guide sets you in the right direction!

Women Are Gifting Becca Wine After Last Night's 'Bachelor' Fiasco & That's Honestly The Type of Support I Want

Fans of The Bachelor are literally sending Becca Kufrin money for wine, and it's the best thing to come out of this finale, TBH.

In case you were unaware, after proposing to Becca, Arie Luyendyk Jr. decided to go back on his decision and cancel his engagement on-camera to go for his second choice, Lauren Burnham. The finale shocked so many viewers, who naturally hate Arie for being such a d*ck, to put it simply. Many tweets flooded in after the show's airing.

Even The Bachelor's very own Bekah Martinez chimed in.

Clearly, everyone was pretty upset and frustrated with Arie's actions. Some took to Twitter to air their anger, others decided to send Becca K. some money for a drink--or a thousand. It's honestly legendary to see how many people Venmo'ed her.

These are actually so sweet, I'm dead.

There's truly nothing better than women supporting women.

Someone Please Explain Halo Brows To Me Because... WTF?

Remember when squiggle brows were the newest weird eyebrow trend happening? Well, it seems we didn’t have to wait long for the next crazy eyebrow trend to come around, and this one is honestly hilarious. (Though I'm not sure if I'm laughing or crying)

The trend is called halo brows, and it's literally an upside down unibrow made to look like an angel's halo. According to POPSUGAR, halo brows were started by a 16 year-old from the UK named Hannah Lyne. "I was having a conversation with a friend trying to come up with a new idea for a look, and all of a sudden it came to me that I should connect my brow tails," she told POPSUGAR. "This look was influenced by fishtail brows; seeing the way my brow flicked upwards inspired the idea of just carrying the brow on until it met in the middle."

Here's a look at this creation:

This is so extra, I’m laughing way too hard at this right now. Is anyone else actually doing this? We need a little more convincing.

A Minnesota State Representative Wants to Ban Arie Luyendyk Jr. From the Entire State & He Has the Internet's Full Support

Whether you watched last night's season finale of The Bachelor or not, you've probably heard by now that season 22 bachelor Arie Luyendyk Jr. is actual human trash — and as it turns out, one Minnesota state representative agrees wholeheartedly.

Monday evening, following the dramatic season finale in which Arie called in the cameras to film him breaking up with Becca after the season had already wrapped, Minnesota state Rep. Drew Christensen was just as outraged as everyone else — but he took things one step further by offering to do his ~civic duty~ and get Arie banned from the state altogether.

"If this gets a thousand retweets I’ll author a bill banning Arie from Minnesota. #TheBachelor #PriorLakeLakers," Christensen tweeted.

Understandably, the state of Minnesota was very heated after Becca (one of its own) was left embarrassed and heartbroken on the show — so naturally, it placed its full support behind Christensen by retweeting his tweet over 9,000 times. The state representative later followed up saying he was keeping his promise to the people and had even already begun drafting the bill. If this isn't proof that some heroes don't wear capes, I don't know what is.

As of Tuesday evening, Christensen is still waiting on reaching the 10,000 retweets he needs to get in order to invite Becca herself to Minnesota's State of the State Address.

All joking aside however, some (understandably) didn't exactly find the humor in Christensen's tweets considering, y'know, it would also be pretty great if he'd be as enthusiastic about introducing measures to keep his constituents safe from guns and mass shootings.

Regardless, it's pretty clear that, despite the fact that it probably won't pass, Christensen's bill to ban Arie is at least something we can all agree on. "I think this whole thing is a great lesson in civic engagement," Christensen told Cosmopolitan. "It’s as easy as a tweet to engage with elected officials on the issues — it’s important to me that I’m accessible to folks I represent."

Hopefully in the future, this lesson in civic engagement will encourage Christensen to continue to use Twitter to engage with his constituents — but next time, about the actual, pressing issues they care about.

Demi Lovato's Mom Has Revealed One of The Family's Darkest Moments & I'm Honestly Heartbroken

Demi Lovato has been a huge part of our childhood, from Sonny With a Chance to Camp Rock, and now she seems larger than life. She's had a rough past—that we know—but Demi's mom, Dianna De La Garza is shedding some serious light on Demi's mental health issues and it's so heartbreaking.

Out March 6, De La Garza's book, Falling With Wings, details her life, as well as her star-studded family's lives, in a way we haven't seen before. An excerpt about Demi's downward spiral during her Disney days was shared on Entertainment Weekly and it's so sad, but makes me thankful to hear Demi has come so far from her beginnings of stardom.

De La Garza begins by painting a picture of returning to her Texas home after helping her kids, Demi, Dallas and Madison, get on their feet in Los Angeles with their entertainment endeavors. She mentions her home and how it feels after being gone for so long, but is immediately drawn back to helping her kids when she received a text from Demi, who was on tour with the Jonas Brothers for Camp Rock 2 at the time.

"Demi’s message sends a chill down my spine, causing my knees to buckle," she writes. "'What’s wrong?' cries Lorna. I struggle to breathe as the light in the room slowly dims. I try to talk but can’t. As though trapped in a bad dream, I fight through the grayness and read the message one more time: 'I’m sorry ahead of time.' The words electrify every nerve in my body, telling me that Demi is in serious trouble." It's here where Dianna believes Demi committed suicide and as a result, she flashes back to the time she discovered bloody rags in Demi's room before her filming with Sonny With A Chance, realizing Demi was still cutting her wrists after promising to stop.

The flashback is hard to read, but it makes sense as to why De La Garza took the text as a goodbye.

The excerpt continues, describing the moment where Demi doesn't answer her mother's phone call. De La Garza decides to call Demi's father, Eddie, who answers, but isn't quick to fill her in on what happened. "'Hello,' he answers, his voice too calm, too flat. 'Eddie!' I scream, 'Where’s Demi?''She’s here . . . next to me,' he says through clenched teeth. Typically friendly and upbeat, Eddie’s response unnerves me. Clearly, he doesn’t want to talk. 'Is she all right?' I ask, trying not to panic though the look on Lorna’s face tells me she, too, is worried. 'No . . . not really,' he says, frustration tugging at every word. 'What’s going on?' I demand. 'Not now!' he snaps. 'I can’t talk.'Oh, no, no, no. He did not just say that. And so emphatically, like I’m bothering him. 'Oh, you’re going to talk,' I say. 'You’re going to tell me right now what’s happening.' Only then do I hear the raggedness of his breath. 'We’re on the plane,' he begins. 'There was a fight, and she punched one of her dancers in the face . . . it’s serious.'" From there, De La Garza realizes her children aren't doing well in the grand scheme of things.

"'The past few months have been hell. No one in my family knows, but Dallas just got out of rehab. She’s struggling with feeling inadequate and ignored because of her sisters’ successes, and Madison is being bullied on the Internet about her weight, which according to the press, is all my fault.' I pause, twisting the tissue in my hands. 'But it’s Demi I’m most worried about. She battles depression a lot . . . and I’m pretty sure all those parties she goes to are full of drugs and alcohol.'" As the excerpt continues, she realizes that her family is everything and she will put them first, so she decides to pray. "'Dear God,' I whisper, 'send us the help we need.' It’s a simple, heartfelt prayer. Though I mean every word, I have no idea how long or how hard each of us will have to work to turn our lives around. Nor can I comprehend the emotional layers beneath our troubles or my own deteriorating mental health that is woven into our family’s issues. Only one thing is certain—I won’t be attending that thirtieth high school reunion that seemed so important a few hours ago. It’s time to start a new chapter in our lives. Our family’s survival depends upon it."

The last line is what really set in when reading this, as it makes Demi's mental health issues so much more real for fans. I am so thankful Demi found her way back on track and it's clear she had a wonderful support system to help with it all.

De La Garza's book is available now and judging by this excerpt, it's going to be an amazing read.

Two Conspiracy Theorists Have Been Arrested After They Wouldn't Stop Harassing Survivors of the Sutherland Springs Shooting & We've Officially Hit a New Low

As if the Sutherland Springs shooting, in which 26 people were killed when Devin Kelley opened fire in a church with a semi-automatic rifle, wasn't traumatic enough for the survivors and families of the victims, two conspiracy theorists have finally been arrested after harassing survivors for months following the shooting.

As BuzzFeed News reports, Robert Ussery, 54, and his partner Jodi Mann, 56, were arrested on Monday at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, the site of the shooting. Ussery and Mannn run a website called "Side Thorn," which perpetuates theories that mass shootings in the United States are actually just "drills" and hoaxes created by the U.S. government, and that all survivors are actually crisis actors used by the government to convince the public that the events that took place were real. As BuzzFeed notes, their homepage offers a $100,000 reward to anyone who can prove the deaths of any of the individuals killed in tragedies like the recent shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School or the Las Vegas concert shooting.

According to multiple survivors and families of the Sutherland Springs shooting victims, Ussery and Mann have been harassing them endlessly since the shooting last November. Pastor Frank Pomeroy, whose 14-year-old daughter was killed in the massacre, says Ussery repeatedly told him his daughter never existed, demanded to see her birth and death certificates and even directed death threats at him.

"[Ussery] continually yelled and screamed and hollered and told me he was gonna hang me from a tree, and pee on me while I’m hanging," Pomeroy told the San Antonio Express News.

Multiple videos on the couple's website show them engaging in other horrific activities, ranging from confronting one witness in her car and demanding that she, "tell the truth about the drill," to harrassing a relative of multiple victims over the phone.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time conspiracy theorists have tried to use others' tragedies to promote absurd ideas and, often, their anti-gun control beliefs. As recently as the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, multiple conspiracy theories speculating that shooting survivors were being used to promote a liberal agenda were being spread throughout Twitter — even by Donald Trump Jr.

As of Tuesday evening Mann and Ussery were still in police custody. "We're going to pray that he stays away [after he's released]," Pomeroy told local radio station KTSA on Tuesday.

The Do's & Don'ts of Sorority Date Parties

Many collegiettes can probably agree that surviving sorority recruitment is one of the most intensive, nerve-wracking yet exciting experiences of college. If you successfully conquer the rushing process, you can conquer anything, right? You survived the endless string of interviews, the hours of wearing heels and the pressure of waiting for results. However, the pressure of making impressions doesn’t stop there. Date parties are classic sorority events that typically involve an off-campus venue, dinner and semi-formal attire. Because of the scale the event and the pressure to bring a date, new members might feel nervous or unsure what to expect. If you’re feeling uneasy about an upcoming date party, check out these do’s and don’ts for some guidance.

1. Do wear comfortable clothing

We all have that one dress that stays at the back of our closet because we’re convinced it’ll eventually be worn, but we inwardly know how much it itches in all the worst places. Even if it’s the most beautiful dress and gives you Gigi Hadid’s figure, don’t even think about wearing it. Anupama Shah, a sophomore at Georgia Tech University, advises against any rash decisions.

“Even if there’s a theme, make sure you wear something comfortable because it’s your event,” she says. “It’s so much better to be happy and comfortable than uncomfortable and miserable.”

The same rule applies for shoes. If you can walk in six-inch stilettos with perfect balance, we’re definitely all jealous. Heels make your calves look killer and somehow give you an air of confidence that no other piece of apparel can. But most of us can agree that beauty is pain and heels hurt after wearing them for more than a few hours.

Julia Fischer, a sophomore at the University of Chicago, says, “Make the right choice on footwear because if you’re in heels, you’re stuck in them for a good amount of time.”

Just like wearing heels to high school graduation, you’re going to be standing for what seems like forever, and there’s plenty of attractive yet comfortable alternatives to sky-high shoes.

2. Don’t feel pressured to bring a date

While the actual name of the event insinuates bringing a date, that doesn’t mean you’ll be kicked out or ostracized if you don’t. In fact, inviting a friend to one of your first Greek events might be even more fun. Sunday Tollefson, author of RUSH RIGHT: Reveal Your Best YOU During Sorority Recruitment and creator of SureSister Sorority Recruitment Prep Course believes you should feel good about your decision in the end.

“Are you going to meet new people? Or are you going to have fun with your crew? You can always go solo to any event [and] can always bring a friend. [But] it does not have to be a romantic date,” she says. “Any urgency or pressure you may feel to have a date should be dismissed. Why? Because that urgency is based in fear, and fear emotions ALWAYS create bad choices.”

Like your choice of dress and heels for the event, your choice of escort or companion should be comfortable, too. You shouldn’t feel like you can’t be yourself around the person, especially in a larger group setting. Because if something goes wrong, you’ll want someone to be there to help. And if you come alone, stick by your sorority sisters for the same reason.

3. Do manage your expectations

When you go to a Greek social function for the first time, it’s important to think about what you want to get out of it. Do you want to meet new people? Do you want to sit back and observe the atmosphere? Going into the party with an realistic goal can sometimes help if you’re the type of person who hates being surprised in blindsided.

“Manage your expectations and set an intention to enjoy the event,” says Tollefson. “Whether your goal is to meet special someone, help a friend meet someone special, or to be entertained by the antics of everyone else trying to meet someone special, being honest with yourself ahead of time is a great way to ensure you'll wake up happy the next day.”

Having an idea of what kind of memories you’d like to take away from your first (of probably many) date parties can put your mind at ease when you’re getting ready. That way, you can focus on other more fun outfit-related matters.

4. Don’t stress out too much

College is a breeding ground for all kinds of stress – academic, mental, social, physical. Date parties shouldn’t be yet another inducer of stress on top of classwork, personal care and relationships. They instead should be a place where you can go to relieve all the stress that’s been building the whole week. Stephanie Huynh, a sophomore at Lehigh University, agrees that date parties are for letting go and having fun.

“Date parties are a super fun way to let loose on a weekend,” she says. “I guess something to avoid is not stress too much about your date whether that means going with someone as a friend or with the intention of hooking up. You're there to have a good time and let loose, so just go with the flow. Many girls I know stress so much about their dates that they let it ruin the night that's just supposed to be fun.”

Save your worries for things that will affect you in the long run. One date party isn’t going to matter by the end of the semester, but if will give you great memories if you relax!

5. Do enjoy yourself responsibly

Greek life often has ties to a sometimes dangerous college drinking culture. Social events like date parties and mixers usually have access to alcohol, whether it’s beer, wine or hard liquor. It doesn’t matter if you’re new to the drinking scene or can hold her own, enjoying yourself in a responsible manner will optimize fun.

“It’s probably a good idea not to get completely trashed,” says Julia, “because you’ll most likely be sent home from the event, especially if it’s at an off-campus venue.”

Drinking is also a completely optional activity. You can attend a date party without partaking in alcohol consumption and still have a great time. The most important thing is that you’re comfortable and happy.

6. Don’t ignore your gut

Sometimes the most fun nights out can turn sour, but that doesn’t mean you have to endure them. Your wellbeing is important, so throw obligation to the wind and put yourself first. One Emma*, a junior at Stanford University, recalls the time she didn’t listen to her gut when she started to feel sick at a sorority date party.

“For the first half of the party, I had a great time,” she says. “I danced with my date and hung out with my sorority sisters, but I started feeling pretty ill as the night went on. I didn’t want to be the party pooper and tell my date I wanted to leave, so I stuck it out. The worst part was I became sick with the flu the next day.”

You shouldn’t ever feel badly for leaving a social function. If you’re not having a good time, don’t feel well or just straight up want to go home, you have every right to say your goodbyes. Of course, you can totally make a dash for the door as well. Making an Irish exit at a large party is totally acceptable.

7. Do plan ahead

There’s nothing worse than being at a party and then realizing you had forgotten to turn in a history paper before its midnight deadline. We’ve all been there. Being in a sorority can feel like a full-time job on top of regular schoolwork with all of the different social events other commitments you have to make. If you put down a party into your planner, keep an eye on which assignments are due in the days leading up to the event. By turning them in a day before the party, you’ll feel much more relieved and can focus on enjoying yourself.

Whether you’re bringing a date or a friend, wearing a cocktail dress or a gown, just remember to enjoy one of your first major Greek social events and take lots of pictures. You’ll definitely want to look back at them with positive memories. Now that you have some idea of what to expect from a date party, there’s nothing to be worried about!

Becca Kufrin Is Officially the Next Bachelorette

It turns out that somehow, something good has actually come out of the dumpster fire that was last night's season finale of The Bachelor. Despite being blindsided by Arie breaking her heart on national television last night (good riddance, I say) and having to deal with seeing her ex propose to someone else on live television tonight, Becca Kufrin has already moved on to greener pastures.

The #BachelorNation favorite has officially announced that she's the next Bachelorette, and TBH, we can't think of a better way for her to say "BOY, BYE." Even with everything her heart's been through this season, Becca explained to Chris Harrison on last night's "After the Final Rose" episode that deciding to become the next Bachelorette was actually a no-brainer for her.

"It was [an easy decision], once I got past the initial heartbreak," Becca said. "At the end of the day, the show is about finding love. That's all I want to do. I have so much love to give. Hard yes all around. I want to be the best damn Bachelorette I can be."

Later on ATFR Becca also proved that she's ready to handle whatever The Bachelorette may throw at her by (calmly and maturely) throwing some serious shade at Arie for what he did to her. "I hope Lauren is your one and that you have found that happiness with her," she said during her confrontation with Arie. "I just want you to be honest with her. Hold her heart high. Have the most respect for her. Be committed to her because this was a lot to go through."

Filming for season 14 reportedly starts next week— and we're almost as thrilled that we'll be getting more of Becca on our TV screens as we are relieved that we'll never have to hear Arie say "I love that," ever again.

Flowers don’t have to be the only thing blossoming this spring; romance can, too! A week off from boring classes, huge textbooks and 12-page papers, spring break is the perfect time for dating. Whether you’re traveling, catching up on your favorite Netflix series at home or staying on campus, this stress-free week can become a whole lot better by going out with a campus cutie or two. Since there are so many ways collegiettes like to spend spring break, we’ve got great date ideas for you no matter where you are!

If you’re at the beach

Take a stroll on the boardwalk

Spend all day on the boardwalk, where you can sample tasty ice cream flavors and get lost in souvenir shops while enjoying the smell of the ocean. Most boardwalks have plenty of rides, shops and restaurants for you and your date to enjoy together. You can also play some games; hopefully they’ll win you a prize!

Go stargazing

Take a blanket out to the beach after dark and get ready for a romantic night. Under the moonlight, you and your date can spot constellations and get cozy together. For extra brownie points, don’t forget your partner’s favorite bottle of wine if you’re 21 or older!

Go to a bonfire

A bonfire on the beach is the perfect date that’s both relaxed and fun. All you need is a bag of chips with dip and two beach chairs. It’s a great way to get to know each other and way more fun than your typical dinner date.

Go to a beachside bar with live music

Try out a new place that comes recommended by a friend, or if you’re feeling adventurous, go to a new place that neither of you has heard of. There’s nothing better than watching a live performance with your toes in the sand. Who knows, you might find a hidden gem!

If you’re stuck on campus

See a band perform

Local bands love to play around college campuses, which usually results in free publicity for them and a free show for you! Find out where you can watch a performance and spend the evening belting out song lyrics together. Chances are it won’t be far away, so you won’t have to worry about transportation.

Set up a beach date in your dorm room

If you can’t make it to the beach, bring the beach to you! Go to your nearest Target and pick up tiki lights and a few inflatable beach toys, like palm trees or beach balls. Decorate your floor with towels and seashells, and for the perfect finishing touch, grab a few helium-filled dolphin balloons! Be sure to invite another couple to join the fun and make it a double date.

If you’re abroad

Go hiking

Hiking is a great way to explore and discover new places, especially if you’re in a tropical area. Choose a scenic trail, and for added romance, be sure to stop at a waterfall along the way!

Have a picnic

Go to a market together and fill up your basket with a variety of local, specialty foods, then have a picnic with all of your choices. You’ll get to experience exotic flavors of tons of fresh food!

Visit a historical site

There’s nothing better than visiting old places in new countries. Look up the most romantic spots in the country and go on a tour with your date. Whether it’s the “Love Lock” bridge in Paris or Juliet’s balcony in Verona, Italy, romance is in the air!

If you’re at home

Play a board game

Spark up some friendly competition with a few of your favorite childhood board games. You could even invite some friends over and compete with other couples. For a romantic spin on the game if it’s just the two of you, have the loser give the winner a massage!

Create a scavenger hunt

Make a list of different places that you’ve been together and write down romantic clues or riddles to each one. You can include the first place you kissed, your first date, etc.

Meghan Gibbons, a senior at Boston College, made a scavenger hunt for a group of friends. "Although I knew the path we were going to take, it was a lot of fun to see my friends remember the places and all the memories we had there," she says. It’ll be even more fun and romantic with your significant other!

Take advantage of your spare time during spring break by setting up some fantastic dates. With warm weather on the rise and so many options to choose from, say goodbye to winter coats and hello to the great outdoors. Love is definitely in the air this spring!

HC Wake-Up Call: Mississippi May Become the First State to Ban Abortion After 15 Weeks, North Korea Says It's Open to Negotiations on Nuclear Program & You Can Audition to Be the New Steve on the 'Blue's Clues' Reboot

Mississippi Could Become the First State to Ban Abortion After 15 Weeks

As Refinery29 reports, on Tuesday, the Mississippi state senate voted to pass a bill that would ban all abortions after 15 weeks post-fertilization. While the bill makes an exception in cases where the mother's health is in danger, no exceptions for rape or incest are provided. The only barrier the bill must pass now is being signed into law — and Mississippi's anti-choice governor Phil Bryant makes this possibility extremely likely. If the bill is passed, Mississippi, which currently bans abortion at 18 weeks, will have the most restrictive ban on abortion of all 50 states.

North Korea Says It's Open to Negotiations on Its Nuclear Program

In a move that shocked the world on Tuesday, North Korea released a statement saying it was willing to negotiate its nuclear program, the New York Times reports. "The North Korean side clearly stated its willingness to denuclearize," the statement reads. "It made it clear that it would have no reason to keep nuclear weapons if the military threat to the North was eliminated and its security guaranteed." The statement also said that North Korea would suspend all missile tests if negotiations were to begin. This is the first time North Korea, which has technically been in a state of war with the U.S. for decades, has ever hinted toward a willingness to end their nuclear program in exchange for security from the U.S, and the world is watching to see what will happen next.

You Can Audition to Be the Next Steve on the 'Blue's Clues' Reboot

'90s babies, brace yourselves: not only is Nickelodeon bringing back our favorite childhood show, Blue's Clues for 20-episode season, but they're looking for a new Steve to hang out with Blue's adorable, animated self on the reboot. This time, however, they're looking for both males and females of all ethnicities between the ages of 18-25 who have, "a comedy background, natural connection with the camera, and [can] empower the home viewer to feel important, respected, and smart," BuzzFeed News reports. And TBH, the only thing that could make me love Blue's Clues even more than I did when I was two is if Steve 2.0 brought some gender or racial diversity to the show.

What to look out for...

Black Panther has officially topped $506 million in the U.S. alone, so it’s no surprise people are integrating elements of the film into their daily life. Every time we hear someone say #WakandaForever we get a little excited. The latest trend though to follow up the movie? Black Panther nails!

On Instagram we came across manicures with everything from Michael B. Jordan’s face to a traditional African print to Zuri’s purple color scheme. They are really such a dope way to show love to the film and its characters.

And Black Panther nail art isn’t the only way fans are honoring the popular flick, Teen Voguereported that costume designer Ruth E. Carter says she’s “actually seeing people who are adorning this cultural aesthetic in a very beautiful and serious way” at screenings of the movie.

Although nails are but a small part of it, this is incredible and we are so happy to witness this movement of representation!
