Olivia Pope & Annalise Keating Will Officially Meet in March for the 'HTGAWM'-'Scandal' Crossover

Female powerhouses Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) and Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) will finally meet during a special Shondaland crossover event on Thursday, March 1, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The crossover between How to Get Away With Murder and Scandal was announced earlier this month via social media, when executive producer and mastermind Shonda Rhimes tweeted a photo of the script where Olivia and Annalise meet for the first time.

In the crossover, after attorney Annalise appears on Scandal, Olivia — President Mellie Grant’s (Bellamy Young) chief of staff — will head over to star in How to Get Away with Murder. The producers won't spill details regarding the big event, but some suspect it involves Annalise’s class action lawsuit against the state of Pennsylvania over wrongful convictions.

Scandal airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC, followed by How to Get Away With Murder at 10 p.m.

Carrie: The Musical is coming to Riverdale!

Warner Bros. TV made the announcement about the special episode — set to air on April 18 — in a press release that mimicked a cast list you might find hung on a high school wall.

The Riverdale High Drama Department recruited none other than Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) for the main role of Carrie, and Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) for Tommy Ross. Kevin (Casey Cott) is directing the production and Fangs Fogarty (Drew Ray Tanner) will be his Assistant Director.

In addition to playing "The Beak," Jughead (Cole Sprouse) is shooting a behind-the-scenes documentary (because of course he is).

BFFs Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) play the popular girls — Sue Snell and Chris Hargensen, respectively — who are known for tormenting Carrie. Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) will play Miss Gardner, who sticks up for Carrie.

Betty's mom Alice (Mädchen Amick) also plays a major role in the musical: Carrie's mom, Mrs. White. Other parts are filled by Moose, Midge, Reggie and more.

The episode will feature 11 songs from the musical.

Let the countdown to April 18 begin!

What Do Vodka & Hotdogs Have in Common? They are Betty White's Secret to a Long Life

Betty White, comedian and all around legend, celebrates another record year (her 96th!) this month and it's time to listen up because she's spilling some secrets for living a long and successful life.

Lazy girls, good news! According to an article on Foodbeast.com Betty says you only need three things to stay young and healthy! What are they? Vodka, hot dogs, and a positive attitude. And who can argue with a Golden Girl?

Actually, the actress does have some science on her side. According to Time magazine, in a study published by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, drinking alcohol in moderate amounts was found to have a reduced risk of death and lead to greater health benefits. So, maybe binge drinking with your girls every Saturday isn't quite what they had in mind but, learning to enjoy a drink here and there in moderate amounts could pay off in the long run.

I'm not so sure about there's any similar conclusions that have been drawn by the scientific community about hot dogs, though. However, Healthline.com does say that happy people live significantly longer lives — so if hot dogs or any other junk food make you happy, you might consider just going for it. Partner that with Betty's recommendation for staying positive and you should be set.

Cheers to another great year of laughs and sage advice from such an amazing woman.

Demi Lovato's New Tour Will Feature Free Therapy Sessions for Fans

When Demi Lovato isn’t on stage or recording hit albums, she works to destigmatize mental health. Now, she’s bringing her mental health advocacy with her on tour. E! News reports that Lovato is offering free therapy to all her concert-goers during her upcoming Tell Me You Love Me tour — which just gives me another reason to try to nab some tickets!

Back in Sep. 2017, Lovato announced that she was taking on a new Mental Health Ambassador position at Global Citizen, so it’s no surprise that she would use her resources to help her fans experience the benefits of therapy.

ABC Breaking News | Latest News Videos

On Wednesday, Lovato explained to Good Morning America host Robin Roberts that she plans to utilize these vital therapy sessions as a way to kick-start her new mental health initiative.

Lovato told Roberts, “It’s basically like a therapy session before the concerts and we have speakers from all over and we’re also helping out with different charities from around the country. So it’ll be incredible, very moving and inspiring experience.”

According to Glamour, CAST Centers will also provide workshops on the tour. Lovato knows firsthand just how advantageous CAST Centers’ treatments can be, as the organization’s wellness program has helped her recover from eating disorders. (It also helps that she’s currently one of CAST Centers’ partners and co-owners.)

“I just know how important it is to use my platform to help others and to share my story in hopes that it inspires people to either get into recovery or better themselves," Lovato said to Roberts. "Whatever it is, I just want people to know that they’re not alone and I’m here for them."

I'm so glad that Lovato is using her stage (literally and metaphorically) to help demolish the stigma against mental health issue. Because 1 in 5 Americans is likely to experience a mental health issue every year, it’s important to continue the conversation about mental health — because this dialogue will help others understand that it’s okay to struggle with mental health; and furthermore, that it’s okay to seek help.

I March Because I Know There Are Good Guys Out There

Beautiful weather does not go unnoticed in January in Ann Arbor, Michigan. My energy bill informed me that for this past billing cycle, the low temperature was -16°F and the average was 11°F (and the only reason the average was that high was a random outlier morning when it reached 52°F). So when I walked down South University Avenue in 44°F weather this past Saturday, holding a sign that read “Patriarchy is NOT God’s dream for humanity”, my heart was filled with a particular kind of hope.

Last December, I emailed my dad an article about the #MeToo movement that I found particularly compelling. In his response, he said that he would love to talk to me more about this era and how I see and experience it. It’s a valid curiosity. After all, the patriarchy has had a minimal grip on my extremely privileged life. Do I even see a necessity for a Women’s March?

Given my life experiences, it would be easy to act like there’s no need for the Women’s March and the patriarchy is a thing of the past. My parents ensured that brother and I were given the same extracurricular opportunities, held to the same standard of academic excellence and expected to help around the house in the same way. In school, I never felt like I was less competent than my male counterparts. (My parents still love to talk about how in first grade, I was the only girl on my reading level and yet the reading group was officially called the “Pink Unicorns” because I convinced all of the boys to vote for that name.) When my mom decided to quit her law firm to stay at home with my siblings and me, I understood it as her personal choice and not her innate duty as a woman.

I was raised in a culture in which I did not have to see my gender as a barrier for academic and career success. I knew the men and boys in my life respected me and I never felt uncomfortable when spending one-on-one time with them. There was no reason for me to think about sexism except when we learned about it in school. And that is precisely why I march.

One day over winter break, I sat around my kitchen table with my mom and some of her friends, who are all incredible, powerful women. We were discussing an article I wrote, in which I addressed mine and my roommates’ experience at a club in Toronto. I was still pretty upset about that night. My roomies and I had just wanted to dance and enjoy ourselves, but the men at the club would not leave us alone.

At first, I made a joke of their persistence (I told more than a few men that “if you go up to the DJ and request ‘Despacito’, then maybe I’ll consider dancing with you”), but eventually it got to be too much.

We repeatedly told one man that we didn’t want to dance with him, but he proceeded to stand right by us, watching us and even following us when we moved across the dance floor. Then one of my roommates finally looked him in the eye and said, “Dude, you need to fuck off right now. We have made it so clear that we don’t want to dance with you and this is absolutely not okay.” That worked on him, but then two other men started following us. This continued the whole time we were there.

I thought this story was absolutely appalling and I was almost afraid to tell my mom because I thought she might get scared and tell me I couldn’t go out with friends anymore. Instead, all of the moms around the table agreed that “that’s just how boys are.” They didn’t approve of it any more than I did, but they warned me that as long as I went to clubs, I should expect to be treated that way. I realized exactly how privileged I am when I said, “That’s not how boys are in Ann Arbor.”

I’m not much of a partier, but I’ve spent my fair share of nights out in sweaty frat basements and clubs. Yes, the boys at those events are clearly there to meet girls and I’m aware that there is no shortage of sexual assault in Ann Arbor. But the vast majority of my experiences with boys at parties and clubs includes them drunkenly putting a hand on me, as if in question. When I say no or shake my head, they stumble away to the next girl.

My mom and her friends were surprised when they heard this. Their experience with boys in college had left them believing things would never change and I was proud to tell them how respectful boys can be, even when they’re drunk and searching for a girl at a club. The reason I was so disgusted by the men in Toronto is that I know that sexual harassment is not wired in men’s DNA. I know they’re capable of heading out to meet girls and not harassing them in the process. Harassment in clubs, even when it’s as seemingly harmless as following a woman around after she tells you she doesn’t want to dance with you, perpetuates more serious forms of sexual assault and violence. There is no reason to excuse this, especially when we’ve seen a better way of doing things. That is why I march.

Last school year, I moved out of my family’s house for the first time and into a dorm at the University of Michigan. My life in the dorms was incredible. I made someof the best friends I’ve ever had and I stayed with them in their rooms until late almost every night, laughing and doing homework and being dumb college students. One night, I somehow ended up being included in “bro time” with a few of my guy friends. I have no idea why they didn’t wait to have their “bro time” until I was out of the room, but I was pretty close with all of them, so I guess none of us really thought twice about it.

When Access Hollywood released tapes of Trump bragging about sexual harassment, many claimed that although his rhetoric is disconcerting, it is common “locker room talk” among boys. This broke my heart. Perhaps it is common, but is that an excuse? Do we really think that men lack the intelligence and respect it takes to have a conversation about women without talking about assaulting them?

As someone who has had the weird and slightly uncomfortable privilege of being there for the “locker room talk” of college boys, I have full faith that they are capable of more than bragging about sexual assault. Yes, they are gross and vulgar, and I’m sure we could have an discussion on whether it’s excusable to talk about women in this manner at all. But, while I’m aware that the “bro time” I’ve witnessed is much tamer than what actually goes on in the locker room, the conversation never once bordered on promoting sexual assault. In fact, it did just the opposite.

At one point, the topic of conversation was whether they would ever try to hook up with a girl at a party who was clearly drunk. They all agreed that the answer was no. One of them shared that once, he had hooked up with a girl who was drunker with him and then in the morning he woke up and thought, “Oh, shit, I did stuff with a drunk girl.”

The other guys agreed. They said, “Yeah, dude, you really can’t do that. That’s the kind of shit that puts you in prison for life.” They all casually and nonchalantly agreed that they would never try to get with a drunk girl and then the conversation moved on.

In the Access Hollywood tape, this is how Trump described his encounter with a woman: “I moved on her like a bitch, but I couldn’t get there. And she was married...I’ve got to use some Tic Tacs, just in case I start kissing her...You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait...And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything...Grab them by the p---y...You can do anything.”

I don’t care how common that kind of conversation is. Excusing it as “locker room talk” is a slap in the face to every guy who has the basic human decency to have a conversation in the locker room that doesn’t promote sexual assault. It’s disheartening that our country has such a negative view of men that we don’t see any hope in holding them accountable for this behavior. Men are capable of conversations that don’t encourage sexual assault! We should get angry when they speak the way Trump did—we should protest it, we should let them know we expect more from them. That is why I march.

When we first arrived at the Women’s March, one of my good friends got a text from her boyfriend, who is a mutual friend of ours, saying that he was also there. He eventually joined us and even held one of our signs. (It didn’t really make sense for him to hold it, because it read, “Our bodies, our choice, our power,” but it’s the thought that counts.) The power of his presence is not lost on me. Most boys would not be caught dead at a Women’s March, but I have friends who she me that masculinity does not have to be so fragile that it is shattered by gender equality.

Every day, women are faced with genuine concerns about their own safety. Some of my closest friends have opened up about sexual assault that they have faced and they live every day in fear because of the trauma in their past. Nine in every 10 rape victims are female. One in 3 women will experience sexual violence in her lifetime.

There are so many women who have lost their hope in men — and rightfully so. They have no reason to believe that the Women’s March will ever do any good because they have no reason to believe that men are capable of anything other than violence and assault. And yet, many of them are still marching.

So here I am, an extremely privileged young woman who has been surrounded by kind, respectful men from the day she was born. I know what men are capable of, because I know my dad, my brother, my friends. Their love and compassion fills me with hope for the next generation of men. I know then men are capable of respecting women and I will protest until everyone holds them to that standard.

That is why I march.

Eagles & Patriots Are Headed To The Super Bowl — Here's Everything You Need To Know

$

https://twitter.com/NFL_Memes/status/955271861201448961https://titter.co...9552718612096Hundreds of millions of people will pack into their local Buffalo Wild Wings, or crowd around the TV in their basement, or congregate in the community center of their dorms on February 4th, to catch the most-watched American television broadcast of the year. That’s right, February 4th is Super Bowl Sunday. And, like every year, we’re pumped.

The Rundown:

This year, the Philadelphia Eagles will be playing the New England Patriots in a classic matchup of the underdog versus the reigning champ. The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League (or the NFL, as most people call it). The NFL is broken up into two conferences: the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Each conference is then divided into four divisions.

On Sunday, the NFC and AFC both held their conference championship games, to determine which team is the best in the conference. In the NFC Championship Game, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Minnesota Vikings. In the AFC Championship Game, the New England Patriots beat the Jacksonville Jaguars. Because the Eagles are now the champion of the National Football Conference, and the Patriots are now the champion of the American Football Conference, the Eagles and Patriots will now play each other in the Super Bowl to determine who is the champion of the entire NFL. (Don’t confuse the Super Bowl with the College Football Playoff National Championship, which was on January 8th. The CFP National Championship was college students playing for their schools’ teams, whereas the Super Bowl is professional athletes who usually already went to college and now get paid to play football as their job.)

If you’ve heard of the Patriots before, that’s because they won the Super Bowl last year. And a bunch of times before that. In fact, this will be their eighth Super Bowl appearance in the past eighteen years. The Eagles, on the other hand, are the biggest Super Bowl underdog since the Cardinals played the Steelers nine years ago. Because the Patriots are so obnoxiously good, most people will be rooting for the underdog.

As SB Nation put it, “If you’re a Patriots fan, then congratulations on the dynasty getting dynastier. If you’re not a Patriots fan, you’d probably rather have a colonoscopy than sit through yet another Tom Brady-Bill Belichick supervillain Super Bowl.”

But don’t let the crowds influence you. Read more about the teams and learn for yourself! In the end, it all comes down to whether you prefer goats or dogs. (That is, the GOAT or the underdog.)

The Patriots:

If you haven’t heard of the Patriots, then you’ve probably at least heard of their quarterback Tom Brady. Tom Brady is like...I can’t even think of anyone to compare him to, because he’s Tom Brady. He’s in a league of his own. You could say that Taylor Swift is the Tom Brady of country-pop singer-songwriters, or that Ellen Degeneres is the Tom Brady of talk show hosts, but even those metaphors wouldn’t come close to describing what a legend Brady is.

After playing for the University of Michigan, Brady was drafted by the Pats in 2000, and has played for them ever since. He has eight AFC Championship wins, which is more than any other quarterback since the inception of the Super Bowl. If the Patriots win the Super Bowl this year, Brady will hold the record for the most career NFL titles. As Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said, “We’re playing the greatest quarterback of all time.” That’s what I’m telling you. The GOAT.

Brady aside, the Patriots right now are a team that even our grandkids will be talking about fifty years from now. This is their tenth Super Bowl appearance in team history, which is more than any other team. Their coach, Bill Belichick, is arguably almost as much of a GOAT as Brady. They’re the team that just keeps on winning, that causes most families in America to turn off their TV or change the channel because they’re just so sick of it.

This isn’t to say the Patriots are perfect. Notably, they have a few injured players out this year. Linebacker Dont'a Hightower and receiver Julian Edelman are both out, and they were important players in last year’s Super Bowl. And now they may have to play the Super Bowl with yet another player on the bench: tight end Rob Gronkowski. You’ve probably heard of Gronk for his crazy antics. (You know, like chugging beers during the Super Bowl parade, putting together his own party cruise line, and, when asked about the controversy in which Brady was accused of deflating footballs, saying, “You can deflate deez nuts.”)

Well, now he’s up to some other shenanigans: concussion protocol. He suffered a concussion during the conference championship game on Sunday, and may have to miss the Super Bowl due to NFL’s policies about playing after a concussion. If he’s out, the Pats might really miss him.

Even though the Patriots are predicted to win, very few people think they will dominate the entire game. In fact, the Patriots have played seven Super Bowls with Brady as quarterback, and every single one of them was a battle up until the very end. No matter who you’re rooting for, it’s more than likely gonna be a game you can’t walk away from until it’s officially over.

The Eagles:

If you’re into Cinderella stories, then this is your year to root for the Eagles. In fact, the Eagles have embraced their underdog status so much that they’ve started wearing dog masks. Seriously. After the Eagles won their division, players Chris Long and Lane Johnson pulled on matching German shepherd masks. According to theLA Times, those masks sold out online immediately after, as fans seek to show their support for the underdogs.

In the narrative that much of America sees, the Patriots are the big bullies who have often been accused of cheating. The Eagles, on the other hand, have defied the odds and managed to make the Super Bowl, even after an injury-laiden season. The best player that the Eagles have is their quarterback, Carson Wentz. He’s no Brady, simply because Brady’s the only Brady, but as far as professional quarterbacks go, Wentz is really, really good. In fact, he had a chance of winning the NFL MVP award (I’m sure you can take a guess as to what that means)—until he tore his ACL on December 10th. Boom. Out for the season. And the Super Bowl.

As if losing Wentz isn’t bad enough, the Eagles have also lost left tackle Jason Peters, running back Darren Sproles and linebacker Jordan Hicks, all due to injuries. These players were all super influential on the team, and it would have been easy to assume the Eagles would fall apart without them. Yet, somehow, they managed to win their division, and then their conference, and now they’re one of two teams in the country to appear in the Super Bowl. Talk about defeating the odds!

The Eagles also have an incredibly strong defensive line, and teams with strong defenses tend to be the Patriots’ weakness. According to ESPN, “The defenses that have had the greatest success against the Patriots are those that can rush four and get pressure on Brady, while dropping seven into coverage. The Philadelphia defense has shown the ability to do so.” Basically, it takes a very specific type of defense to defeat Brady, but the Eagles might just be that type. When the Eagles are on defense, make sure to watch defensive end Brandon Graham and defensive tackle Fletcher Cox. If the Eagles win, they will likely have a lot to do with it.

Game on!

It’s safe to say, no matter who you’re rooting for, this is going to be a game that goes down in history. Make sure to grab some snacks before kickoff—chances are, you’re not gonna want to get up this entire game.

TV Writers Are Using a Google Spreadsheet to Push for Equal Pay

$
0
0

Days after the Women’s March Anniversary, which inspired millions of women to fight for human rights and equality, TV writers banded together to create an anonymous Google spreadsheet that shares individuals’ salary and benefits to shed light on pay disparity issues in the industry.

The Hollywood Reporter expounds that the survey doesn’t just document wage, benefits and studios for TV writers — it also records the wage differences between other TV production staff members, from story editors to showrunners. While the spreadsheet is still under construction as scriptwriters, assistants and editors alike record their salary details, the document already reveals a lot about the disparities in the industry — and as is the case in other industries, they don't just exist between men and women, but also white people and people of color.

According to the document, a woman of color who is a co-producer for a CBS show alleged she earned only $10,000 per episode, while a white women co-producer at the same network alleged she received $14,000 per episode. That's not to say the two work on the same tv show; however, it does call into question how equal employees are at CBS.

In the document, an assistant included a telling statement that she only earned $600 a week at her company before she pointed out that this was below minimum wage (thus illegal). The fact that this anonymous professional didn’t receive a legal wage until she mentioned that it was illegal shows that some organizations will deliberately try to use their power to undermine the women who work under them.

This telling Google sheet has become especially necessary after Michelle Williams revealed that she was paid 1,500 times less than Mark Wahlberg for All the Money in the World reshoots. Ellen Pompeo also explained that she’s struggled to get a raise for her role on Grey’s Anatomy — despite the fact that there wouldn’t really be a show without Meredith Grey.

It’s clear that injustices like these have inspired TV professionals to create this collaborative effort so that Hollywood can transmute into a more inclusive work environment.

Hopefully, networks and companies will listen to these courageous women speaking out and assure every employee, regardless of their gender, race, sexuality and disability, receives equal and fair pay.

While there are still a lot of injustices within Hollywood and other industries, efforts like this list will hopefully force the entertainment industry to amend these wrongs.

If you're still mourning the loss of Harry Potter weekends on Freeform and couldn’t manage to score a coveted ticket to Harry Potter’s Broadway debut, I have some good news for you!

The Barge Ladies cruise company has designed a Harry Potter themed cruise that will set sail down London’s River Thames beginning this August. And with two sessions, August 5-11 and August 19-25, you have two chances to catch the magic.

As Entertainment Weeklypoints out, with this cruise you get more than just a relaxing vacation — you also get access to some important sites from the Harry Potter films. The cruise will visit Picket Post Close, which served as the filming location for 4 Privet Drive, and Christ Church College at Oxford, which was a model for Hogwarts’ Great Hall. There will also be a visit to Warner Bros. Studios to take part in the Harry Potter tour.

Speaking about developing the project, Barge Ladies founder Stephanie Sak said, “The itinerary is my baby and it has been a professional highlight to see it come to fruition.”

But, before you apparate to London, it should be noted that this once in a lifetime experience comes with a hefty price tag of $4,190 per person. But really, who can put a price on seeing Harry Potter history?

Badass Serena Williams Is Returning To Competitive Tennis 5 Months After Giving Birth

In case you didn't already know how incredible Serena Williams is, today she announced that she will return to competitive tennis a mere five months after giving birth to her daughter, Alexis Ohanian Jr.

According to E! News, the decorated tennis star, who gave birth last September, will make her return in the Fed Cup with her sister, Venus Williams. Together, the Williams sisters will play a team from the Netherlands on February 10 and 11.

This isn’t the first time that Williams has attempted to return to the court as a new mom. In December 2017, she faced current French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in an exhibition match in Abu Dhabi, and lost. She later withdrew from the Australian Open.

Afterwards, Williams shared a statement that said in part, “After performing in my first match after giving birth I realized that although I am super close, I’m not where I personally want to be.”

Given the complications she experienced during and after childbirth, it’s not surprising that Williams may have needed some additional time to recover. Plus, she probably enjoyed spending more time with her adorable little daughter.

I think I speak for most when I say I can’t wait to see what Serena accomplishes next!

Shaking off the Post-Winter Break Blues

School is back in session and if any of you are like me, the first few days were so overwhelming I already thought about dropping out at least 12 times. But I’m a woman and we don’t give up so easily! We are here for a reason and I am determined to never quit so easily!

Let’s face it, we are already counting down the days until summer. Winter break was far too short, and summer seems way too far away with the downpour of snow and ice. Just think, only about 15 more weeks to go! That’s 5 sets of 3 weeks! Let’s take it a set of 3 weeks at a time. That seems more reasonable…right?

It can be tough facing the fact that you have so many weeks left, your classes are going to pile on the homework as if the professors believe their class is the only class you’re taking, and the fact that you still aren’t awake from the daze of the holiday craziness. It seems like there was no break at all.

I can help with all of this! I am going through it too, so I figured writing out some gentle reminders for all of you beautiful strong women out there might also help me to wake back up and take on this semester at full speed!

1.    It may seem like a lot based off what the syllabus says, but after the first few weeks, you will notice you do not have to do every little thing on that syllabus

2.    The professors will tell you that you need to read every chapter for that class, even if they assign 4 chapters a week, but really you just need to be good at skimming.

3.    Take every Sunday to recover. Yes, Sundays are usually recovery days from staying up too late and out all night with some great friends making the best memories but, get your sleep schedule back on track for the week starting Sunday so that Monday won’t give you the blues.

4.    Sundays are homework days. The best thing you can do for yourself is get ahead. Even if it is only a week ahead. Wake up early on Sunday, do not hit that snooze, and hit the books. If you get everything out of the way for the week, you can go to bed at a reasonable time on Sunday evening, which will settle that sleep schedule and leave you well rested. Then, spend the week calmly doing assignments and binge watching tv shows instead of stressing that small assignments are being added on to your piles of homework that you could have done on Sunday.

5.    The professors say they want you to succeed, but sometimes it doesn’t feel that way. It feels like they want to watch you fail. Prove them wrong! Keep getting ahead in class, participating, and showing them that you are just as smart as they are.

6.    Take time for yourself. You can’t jump into everything right away and expect it all to fall into place. You have to ease into it. If not, you might explode! Make sure you block out at least 1 hour of your day to do anything that makes you less stressed. Even if that means a nap…. just don’t hit that snooze button after your hour is up!

7.    Remember that you got this! You have friends and family that will help you along the way. Stay calm and know that every little thing is going to be alright!

Back To School

Getting into the swing of school can be a challenge especially when all you have done all break is lay in bed and binged watched Netflix. We all make promises to ourselves that we are going to try our hardest when it comes to the upcoming semester. Here are some tips that can help you succeed this semester:

1.      Get a planner

Writing out what time you have your classes and specific dates such as assignment due dates, quizzes, or exams can make your adjustment back to classes easier. By writing everything out it will help you stay more organized and prevent you from missing important due dates or meetings.

2.      Know where your classes are

Instead of frantically trying to find the right classroom five minutes before your class begins, find out what building your classes are in and go explore the day before class begins. Not only will you know the location of the room, but you will be able to get a feel of how big the classroom is and pick where you want to sit prior to the first day.

3.      Get to know your professors

Getting to know your professors is a major benefit. If you know your professors, they will help you to succeed in the class. It may be annoying when they call on you everyday, but in the long run you will know the material better than the rest of your classmates. By getting to know your professors it will also benefit you when you need a letter of recommendation.

4.      Plan times to study

By planning specific times to study it will be easier for you to get motivated to study. Ask your friends when they have free time and plan an hour or two everyday where you can meet at the library or a study room.

5.      Set certain days and times to workout

Everyone probably made a New Year’s resolution to workout more. If you plan in an hour a day or every other day to workout it will help you to become more motivated to go to the gym. 20 minutes a day is a good start and will not be too overwhelming if you are just beginning.

6.      Develop heathier eating habits

If you develop better eating habits it will make you feel better overall and give you enough energy to stay focused.

4 Ways To Combat Hyperpigmentation

$

Whether it’s dark circles under your eyes, dark spots due to acne, or age spots, hyperpigmentation is annoying to deal with in the battle for a refreshed, natural, blemish-free skin look. According to Dr. Debra Jaliman, this, which is known as hyperpigmentation, happens “when melanocytes, the color producing cells, produce too much color in our skin.” It is something most people deal with in some form. These problems are especially apparent for people of color, since their skin already contains more melanin.

But have no fear! We rounded up four ways to combat pesky discoloration:

1. Sunscreen

The number one way to combat hyperpigmentation is sunscreen! Everyone (yes, we mean everyone) should wear sunscreen every day. Dr. Jaliman says, “It is important to always wear a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or above every day, rain or shine. UV light penetrates through the clouds.” So everyday when you know you’ll be outside, spread a layer of SPF 30 over your face. The Alba Botanica Facial Sunscreen is SPF 30 and isn’t greasy or heavy, making it perfect to go underneath makeup. In addition, heaps of foundations and face products contain SPF in them, like the Clinique Even Better makeup and the Maybelline FitMe foundation.

2. Chemical peels vs. light treatment

There is often a debate between chemical peels and light treatments. Professional chemical peels can range from $150-$6,000 and are usually some form of salicylic acid peels, mandelic acid peels, or trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels. However, Dr. Jaliman advises that chemical peels are not good. In fact, her office uses light treatment. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), Fraxel, and CO2 are the most common ways to combat discoloration by promoting the collagen production in one’s skin. The prices for these treatments range from $400-$4,000. So no, it isn't cheap, but it is probably the most permanent and successful way to get rid of discoloration.

3. Vitamin C, niacinamide and retinol

As Dr. Jaliman says, “Products that contain niacinamide [vitamin B3], Vitamin C or retinol will improve the hyperpigmentation and help lighten the skin and return it to its normal color.” Some good serums that feature vitamin C, niacinamide, and/or retinol are the Murad Environmental Shield Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum Duo, the Mario Badescu Vitamin C Serum, and the Derma E Vitamin C Concentrated Serum for a lower-cost option.

4. Color correcting makeup

Color correcting (CC) is the name of the game for discoloration. Dr. Jaliman is a fan of Dermablend makeup. For an added boost, try using a brightening/illuminating primer before you apply the rest of your makeup. To correct an excess of melanin, use a primer with peach undertones. The Too Faced Primed & Peachy primer is great, and the Milani Prime Correct primer is a great lower-cost option.

A good color correcting concealer, especially one with vitamin C, can really make a difference. Dr. Jaliman recommends the Cle de Peau concealer which also has SPF 25. In addition, the Urban Decay Naked Skin Color Correcting Fluid has a great range of shades for color correcting, including a peach, for light-medium skin tones, and a deep peach, for darker skin tones.

CC cream is also an absolute necessity when combating discoloration. It’s basically a color correcting form of BB cream/tinted moisturizer, so it offers decent coverage while also evening out your skin tone. The It Cosmetics CC cream is one of the absolute best CC creams around if you have a light to medium skin tone. The Clinique CC cream, Olay CC cream, and Smashbox CC cream also offer good coverage, and also have a range of shades.

So, there you have it. While skin discoloration is definitely not fun, you have a slew of options to both prevent and erase it.

Everything You Need To Know About Rosemarie Aquilina, The Judge Presiding Over The Larry Nassar Abuse Case

Judge Rosemarie Aquilina handed down disgraced former Team USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor Larry Nassar’s sentence today. After allowing every single one of his victims who wished to come forward testify against him, 156 in total, she sentenced him to 40 to 175 years in prison.

Aquilina was instrumental in creating a supportive environment in her courtroom for the women Nassar abused. When he said the experience of sitting through the testimonies of so many of these young women had a negative effect on his mental health and that it felt like a “media circus,” The New York Times says Aquilina simply replied, “Spending four or five days listening to them is significantly minor, considering the hours of pleasure you had at their expense and ruining their lives.”

The initial plan was to allow for four days of testimony; Aquilina extended it three more days to allow more women to tell their stories.

After sentencing him, she said, “It is my honor and privilege to sentence you,” and, regarding the length of his sentence, added that she “just signed [his] death warrant.”

If you’re like me and had no knowledge of Aquilina prior to the start of Nassar’s trial, you probably want to know everything about her. Long story short; she’s nothing short of absolutely amazing.

Aquilina started her career as a judge when she enlisted in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps, or JAG Corps, in 1986. It’s a branch of the military that focuses exclusively on military justice and law and, at the time of her enlistment, Aquilina was the first female JAG Officer in Michigan’s Army National Guard. She spent twenty years serving with them before retiring from that position in 2006. Her biography with the Ingham County Circuit Court states that she was a favorite judge and one of the most frequently requested "because of her dedication to service and the soldiers she served with."

Before being elected to her current position on the 30th Circuit Court in Ingham County in 2008, she served four years in the 55th Circuit Court where she was both a chief judge and a sobriety court judge.

Aquilina also teaches classes as an adjunct professor at Thomas M. Cooley Law School and Michigan State University School of Law. Additionally, she briefly hosted a syndicated radio talk show called Ask the Family Lawyer.

Beyond the bench, she continues to be an all-around incredible woman. She balances the tasks that come with being a mother of five, a judge and a professor, and in addition, she is also a published crime fiction writer. Her State Detective Special Forces series has one published book, Triple Cross Killer, as of last year. The second book is reportedly almost finished, and a third is in the works.

Writing, Aquilina says, is her escape from the isolation that often comes with being a judge, and she does it in every spare minute she can find. Even if that spare minute happens to come at 2 a.m. when a character won’t let her sleep until she gets some more of the story written.

Just as writing is her solace, she was also a source of light and advocacy for the women who testified against Nassar with her “compassion and powerful personal responses” to their strength in giving testimony on the most traumatic times in their lives.

“Leave your pain here,” Aquilina told one woman after she testified against Nassar, “and go out and do your magnificent things.”

Women Journalists Trying To Cover VP Mike Pence's Israel Trip Were Forced To Stand Behind Male Colleagues & WTF 2018?

The women journalists who covered the trip Vice President Mike Pence took to Israel, where he visited the Western Wall in Jerusalem, found themselves on the receiving end of two unpleasant surprises on Monday and Tuesday.

The first of these two problems was unnecessarily invasive security checks at the hands of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security detail. A female journalist from Finland’s state television was asked to remove her bra during what the Chicago Tribunedescribes as an “overly zealous and demeaning security check.” When she, understandably, refused to do so, she wasn’t allowed to cover the news conference with Pence and Netanyahu. This isn’t the first time such ridiculous “security” measures have been taken when it comes to press events for the Israeli prime minister. An Al Jazeera journalist said she was also asked to take her bra off during a security check for an event in 2011.

When the journalists arrived at The Western Wall, which is the outer wall of what’s called the Temple Mount by Jews and al-Haram al-Sharif by Muslims, women were moved off to one side of a fence with men on the other side. This is standard protocol with the Orthodox Judaism, as one of their heritage foundations currently has authority over the site. The plaza is split half by a fence. Women must pray on one side, and men pray on the other side. There can be no crossover. The women who pray there are not allowed to read aloud from the Torah, wear prayer shawls or sing.

Platforms were set up for the press at the event, but there was one small problem. The two platforms were the same height, with the women reporters standing directly behind the male reporters. They were more or less unable to be seen by both Pence and Netanyahu and they weren’t able to get any good shots of either man.

Having the men stand right in front of them ruined any of their potential shots of the even to a certain degree. But the addition of many cameras and boom mics meant that it was somewhere between extremely difficult and impossible to get any video or pictures of the event. Their questions during the press conference also went largely ignored, due in part to their near-invisibility.

The foundation said in a statement that the circumstances had been the same during President Trump’s visit to the wall in May last year, and they “reject any attempt to divert the discussion from the important and moving visit of the US Vice President and his wife at the Western Wall."

The attending women journalist immediately called BS on the statement, and created the hashtag “#pencefence” on Twitter to continue to speak out against their treatment.

In the hashtag, they protested against their treatment as “second-class citizens” and the resulting inability to do their work effectively. White House Correspondent Jenna Johnson, who traveled to the press conference along with other journalists and Pence, said local journalists had already set up by the time they got there and “there were tons more men than women, and the female journalists were very angry about the separation."

This is also not the first time the set-up at The Western Wall has been the source of controversy. The gender segregation has been an increasingly hot topic among a growing number of Jewish advocacy groups. Many of them demand a space be created for equal, mixed-gender prayer. In 2016, Netanyahu agreed to create a third space for unsegregated prayer, but went back on his promise at the last minute. This, understandably, infuriated the groups and increased feelings of abandonment and isolation, especially among American Jews. In the wake of the segregated press conference, Women of the Wall - a group that has been at the forefront of the fight for egalitarian space for prayer - said in a statement that senior female journalists “experienced first-hand what happens to a woman who challenges the ultra-Orthodox monopoly of the Western Wall."

Netanyahu’s office issued an apology to the reporter from Finland in regards to the invasive security check, but stands by its statement concerning the continuing segregation around The Western Wall.

Meryl Streep (!!!) Is Joining 'Big Little Lies' Season 2

Earlier this week, Alexander Skarsgård confirmed he was returning for season two of Big Little Lies as Perry Wright.

However, audiences will be meeting a new member of the Wright family, too. Oscar- and Emmy-winning actress Meryl Streep is set to play Perry's mother, Mary Louise Wright.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Streep's character "is described as a woman who is concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren following her son Perry's death." She apparently arrives in Monterey "searching for answers."

On another note, is that the confirmation that he's actually dead? After all, Skarsgård himself said he didn't know.

That's all we know about Streep's character for now. But it's freaking Meryl Streep — so you know she's going to be great.

Lauren Graham Wants to Appear on 'Gilmore Girls' Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino's Latest Series & I'm All for It

Let's face it: we're probably never getting another season of the Gilmore Girls Netflix reboot. It could be possible, but both the cast and creator Amy-Sherman Palladino have been pretty vague about a Season 2 since the revival launched in 2016. Plus, Sherman-Palladino and her husband and frequent creative partner Daniel Palladino are currently busy with their new Amazon series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which recently won two Golden Globes for the work of its leading actress Rachel Brosnahan and the overall series. While the series features Alex Borstein, who appeared on a few early Gilmore Girls episodes, another actress familiar with the Palladinos' work is reportedly interested in a "marvelous" stint on the show.

Refinery29 reports that Lauren Graham has talked to Sherman-Palladino about appearing on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel soon. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently, Sherman-Palladino said, "I gotta get my girl Lauren on the show. I want to have her on it."

Seeing as this new show takes place in the 1950s and Graham's Lorelai was known for her old-school references, I am begging for this to happen. After all, we already know that Graham can rock period clothing!

Grahan apparently even has ideas about what kind of character she could play. "Lauren wants to be something very specific," Sherman-Palladino said. "She has it all figured out."

The show's second season is due to begin production in March, which gives Graham plenty of time to clear her schedule for a guest spot. Creating strong female characters is a passion for Sherman-Palladino, so here's hoping that she's able to work with Graham to introduce yet another awesome woman on TV.

President Trump Says He's Open to Creating a Way for Dreamers to Become Citizens

President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he is willing to possibly create a pathway to citizenship after 10 to 12 years for DREAMers, or undocumented immigrants who entered the United States as children, the New York Times reports.

According to CNN, this is the first time the president has specifically confirmed that he would accept a path establishing DREAMers' citizenship. While a replacement version of former President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program hasn't been finalized yet, Trump unexpectedly told press, "We're going to morph into [making a path]. It's going to happen at some point in the future."

The group of reporters was at the White House for a briefing related to the administration maintaining a "restrictive immigration agenda." Trump joined the meeting and spoke about their plans without encouragement from anyone else.

"Over a period of 10 to 12 years, somebody does a great job, they work hard, that gives incentive to do a great job," he said. "Whatever they're doing, if they do a great job, I think it's a nice thing to have the incentive, of after a period of years, being able to become a citizen."

With DACA due to expire on March 5, Trump also said to the reporters that those enlisted in the program shouldn't stress about potential deportation. "Tell them not to be concerned, OK?" he said, as CNN reports. "Tell them not to worry about it. We're going to solve the problem. Now, it's up to the Democrats, but they should not be concerned."

In a surprise move, Trump's informal statement has actually garnered some bipartisan support. Democratic Sen. Dirk Durbin of Illinois tweeted a link to a story reporting on the president's comments, saying alongside it, "The President is headed in the right direction here."

In a statement, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham also supported Trump's hints at new plans, saying, "I truly appreciate President Trump making it clear that he supports a path to citizenship for DACA receipients. This will greatly help the Senate efforts to craft a proposal which President Trump can sign into law."

While the lack of an official immigration plan has been a hot topic in the government lately, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders also announced on Wednesday that the administration will release a "legislative framework" on immigration this Monday.

With just over a month to go until DACA's expiration, it's crucial for Trump and Congress to agree on a new immigration plan soon.

The Best Valentine's Day Date Ideas for Each Stage of Your Relationship

Planning for Valentine’s Day can be stressful and chaotic. And depending on what 'stage' your relationship is in, it can be difficult to decide what’s best to do for this special day with your SO. Whether you two just started dating or you’ve been dating for so long everyone keeps asking you when you’ll get married, here are some different date ideas for every relationship stage.

1. The 'Honeymoon' stage

We all know this stage. It’s the stage where everything is sunshine and daisies and rainbows. You’re completely obsessed with your SO and you want to make sure your first Valentine’s Day with them is absolutely perfect. There are plenty of good date ideas for the infatuation phase, but you can never go wrong with the classic dinner and a movie date. This allows you two to get dressed up nice, spend some quality time together over a yummy meal and a good movie. Other cute ideas for this stage include going ice skating together, playing indoor mini golf and going bowling. These are also classic date ideas couples typically go on if they’re just getting to know one another, and the element of competition always makes things more fun!

The honeymoon stage of a relationship often has added pressure to have the perfect first Valentine's Day date, so remember to just take a deep breath and relax! Whether you two have been dating for a short amount of time or you’re rounding the one year mark, remember what this holiday is really about: expressing your love for your SO.

2. The 'Understanding' stage

The 'understanding' stage is a tricky one. This is the phase where you and your SO have been together for around a year or two. You’ve gathered an understanding of one another, such as your weird habits, daily routines, as well as your likes and dislikes. And sometimes, your dislikes can butt heads. You’ve passed the honeymoon stage and you're entering the stage where you realize you don’t totally love everything about your SO. Sometimes you two have different opinions on things, which can include plans for this year’s Valentine's Day.

If you’re struggling to find something you both enjoy for Valentine’s Day, try to brainstorm the things you both like to do together. Then, compromise so you get to do something you both enjoy. A good idea for couples who are in the limbo stage of “understanding,” is to do a Valentine’s Day activity where you learn something together, such as a cooking class or a wine and painting class. Other date ideas can be taking a trip to a museum, an art gallery or taking dancing lessons together. What’s great about all of these ideas is you get to learn something new together, while also learning more about each other at the same time!

3. The 'Comfortable' stage

The 'comfortable' stage is exactly as you’d expect; you two are extremely comfortable with each other at this point in your relationship. You’ve probably been together for three to four years and you’re comfortable wearing no makeup, bra or real human clothes around them, because let’s face it, they’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly. The comfortable stage can be a good one, as you both know what to expect from one another and nothing less. And while it’s good to be 100 percent comfortable with your SO, that can often lead to a lack of a 'spark' in the relationship, where the most exciting thing you do together is stay in and watch Netflix every weekend.

If you’re looking to shake things up, try doing something different for this Valentine’s Day, such as a make your own scavenger hunt challenge! What you do: create little clues for each other and hide them around your town. Think of an end goal in mind, such as meeting at the place where you first met and use those clues to lead your SO to that particular place. Then, surprise them there and finish off the night with whatever your 'end goal' was.

Other 'comfortable' stage date ideas can be recreating your first date together, hitting up local clubs, or doing a bar crawl. Dates that make you go out of your comfort zone are bound to be fun, especially if you two are together.

4. The 'We're Basically Married' stage

We all know that one couple who has been together for what seems like forever. These are the couples that are pushing the five, six, or even seven year mark this Valentine’s Day, and they’re basically getting asked when they’re getting married. If you and your SO are these people, congratulations! That’s a long time sharing your life with someone, and this Valentine’s Day do something extra special to celebrate all of the good times together.

A great idea to celebrate your love for each other is to plan a weekend getaway. Book a hotel room away from your housemates and all the chaos from school, and take time to relax together. You can swim in the pool, or a have a wine and movie night in your room. Another extra special date idea is road tripping together! Find local cities and attractions around your area that you both have always wanted to see and hit the road, enjoying the sights and each other’s company.

Valentine’s Day plans are exciting but it’s easy to get stressed about them, especially if you’re just begun your relationship, or you’ve been together for so long you’ve run out of ideas. Remember to enjoy this day no matter what 'stage' you’re in, and remember all of the reasons why you’re smitten with your SO. That’s what Valentine’s Day is really about; appreciating the person you’re with and showing how much you care.

The President of Michigan State University Just Resigned Over Scandal of Former Employee Larry Nassar

Days after three USA Gymnastics leaders resigned amid criticism of mishandling former team doctor Larry Nassar's sexual misconduct, the president of Michigan State University has resigned over the school's ties with faculty member Nassar. The New York Times reports that President Lou Anna Simon faced pressure to resign due to Nassar's longtime employment at MSU, where he treated student athletes, and the school's handling of his numerous sexual abuse cases. Also on Wednesday, Nassar, 54, was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison following a week of hearing his victims' testimonies in court.

Simon released a statement announcing her resignation on Wednesday. She had worked at MSU for over 40 years, becoming the first female president of the university in 2005.

"The last year and a half has been very difficult for the victims of Larry Nassar, for the university community, and for me personally," Simon wrote in her statement. "To the survivors, I can never say enough that I am so sorry that a trusted, renowned physician was really such an evil, evil person who inflicted such harm under the guise of medical treatment. I know that we all share the same resolve to do whatever it takes to avert such tragedies here and elsewhere."

Simon had plans to retire from her position in December 2016, around the same time as the first allegations against Nassar were publicly reported. While MSU has stuck to its stance that none of the school's officials knew about the claims before they were published, many have speculated about how much Simon might have known about Nassar beforehand. He was dismissed from his position at the university shortly after the first reports, and the ongoing accusations that followed prevented Simon from retiring. Currently one of the highest paid public university presidents, Simon declined a pay raise in December 2017 when criticism of Nassar was at its peak.

"I am pleased that statements have been made by Mr. Fitzgerald and Board members about my integrity and the fact that there is no cover-up," Simon said in her statement. "I support wholeheartedly the Board's decision to ask the Attorney General's Office to review the events surrounding the Nassar matter. This is an important toward providing more assurance to the university community and the public."

After explaining her role in the court hearings centered on Nassar, Simon announced her resignation at the end of her statement.

"As tragedies are politicized, blame is inevitable," she wrote. "As president, it is only natural that I am the focus on this anger...Throughout my career, I have consistently and persistently spoken and worked on behalf of Team MSU. I have tried to make it not about me. I urge those who have supported my work to understand that I cannot make it about me now. Therefore, I am tendering my resignation as president according to the terms of my employment agreement."
