Meghan Markle's Half-Sister Isn't Happy With This Comment Prince Harry Made About His Christmas

Days after celebrating Christmas with his fiancée Meghan Markle and the rest of his family, Prince Harry got chatty while interviewing former President Barack Obama for a BBC Radio special. While the prince's discussion with Obama covered important views on the role of social media, he turned to slightly more personal topics while talking with the BBC team in a separate portion of the program. PEOPLE reports that Harry spilled about how he and Meghan enjoyed their Christmas together, and what he revealed didn't please Meghan's half-sister Samantha Markle Grant.

"There's always that family part of Christmas [where] there's always that work element there as well," Harry said, referring to the royals' traditional public walk to and from Christmas Day services. "We had great fun staying with my brother and sister-in-law and running round with the kids...[Meghan's] done an absolutely amazing job, she's getting in there and it's the family that I suppose she's never had."

Samantha, who is 17 years older than Meghan and reportedly hasn't spoken to her in nearly a decade, was quick to respond to Harry's suggestion that Meghan experienced a broken family. Replying to a random commenter on Twitter, she wrote, "She has a large family. She always did. Our dad is amazing and completely self sacrificing. We made it so that she had two houses. How fun it was!"

According to Good Housekeeping, Meghan's parents divorced when she was six years old, and she lived with her mother following their separation. She has two half-siblings, including Samantha, from her father's first marriage, and E News reports that 52-year-old Samantha is wheelchair-bound due to multiple sclerosis. Sources also suggested to E News that, because of their age gap, Samantha and Meghan never had a close relationship.

To top it off, Samantha is also writing a tell-all book about her sister's childhood, which she seems to be emphasizing to have her own moment in the spotlight.

It's hard to say whether or not rumors about the sisters' relationship are true, but if there's anything that's clear, it's that Samantha may need to be a little more discreet about sharing family-related comments. Here's hoping that she can patch things up with Meghan before the wedding rolls around.

Police Brutality Victim Eric Garner's Daughter Erica Is Brain Dead After Having a Heart Attack

The daughter of police brutality victim Eric Garner went into a coma on Saturday when she had an asthma attack that later triggered a heart attack. Five days later, the doctors at New York's Woodhull Hospital declared 27-year-old Erica Garner brain dead with no chance of recovery.

Garner’s CAT scan revealed that the brain damage stemmed from “lack of oxygen while in cardiac arrest,” according to her Twitter account. Family members have been called to the hospital to say their goodbyes.

After the infamous 2014 death of her father due to him being caught in a police officer's chokehold (a banned action), Garner began to speak out in support of Black Lives Matter. She became a well-known advocate for the cause while mothering two children. According to the New York Daily News, she previously suffered a heart attack after delivering her son this past summer. Doctors stated that the pregnancy had "stressed her already enlarged heart."

Controversy surrounding the treatment of Garner's family at the hospital has appeared on Twitter as reports of the NYPD clearing loved ones from the hospital surfaced.

Fellow activists and friends of Garner have also flooded to social media to comment about the stress that people fighting for justice often face throughout their lives.

As of Thursday night, Garner remains on life support.

A Women's Resistance Group Serenaded Barack Obama With Christmas Carols & the World Feels Magical Again

Regardless of people's political views, something that many of us probably miss is former President Barack Obama's friendly, lighthearted personality. Obama recently traveled to Hawaii with his family to celebrate the holidays, as per tradition, and a local women's resistance group decided to greet him in seasonal style. Hawaii News Now reports that members of the women's movement Windward ReSisters gathered outside Obama's vacation home earlier this week to sing Christmas carols for him. It's no surprise that Obama was totally game for participating in the performance.

Women in the Hawaii-based group weren't sure if the former leader was going to acknowledge their presence, and member Darlene Mandel admitted to HNN that their serenade was "a crap shoot." About 20 carolers met outside Obama's Lanikai estate, choosing to sing "Jingle Bells" and Hawaiian standard "Mele Kalikimaka.""We got our group together on Saturday and went with our pussy hats and Santa hats," Mandel said to PEOPLE.

Inside the house, Obama was hosting a Christmas party, but soon came outside with Secret Service agents to visit the women. Mandel filmed video of his interaction with the group, which included a brief singalong to "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."

In the video, Obama is seen shaking hands with the women and joking about them having champagne. The short clip later went viral when Mandel posted it on the private Facebook group Pantsuit Nation.

It's nice to know that even though he's technically a private citizen again, Obama is still up for fun moments with his supporters. Props to the Windward ReSisters for spreading the Christmas spirit!

How You Handle The College Admissions Process, Based on Your Zodiac Sign

$

Everyone handles the college application process differently. Some are ready to go and have their applications sent as early as possible, while others sneak them in just in time. Whether you embrace this rite of passage or absolutely dread it, we bet it might have something to do with the stars. Are we right? Read below to see how your horoscope matches up to your college admissions process experience.

Sagittarius

You are more than ready for college—in fact, you can barely stand the wait. When it comes to your college apps, you are ready to go. Sagittarians love new experiences, and college couldn’t come at a better time. You’re not even worried about whether you’ll get accepted or not. You’re confident! Your apps have long been filled out, and everything is signed, sealed and delivered. All that’s left is waiting for your decision letters—December can’t come soon enough.

Capricorn

Capricorns are organized, methodical and complete perfectionists. Chances are, you have already applied to every school on your list (and it’s an impressive bunch). From polished essays, to beaming recommendations, you are more excited than worried. The only problem will be figuring out where to go once you hear back from all your schools. Surely a few pros and cons lists will be necessary for that.

Aquarius

Your college application is most likely filled to the brim with volunteer work and humanitarian accomplishments. In fact, there’s hardly enough room for you to include everything. Although the process may be stressful, an Aquarius will always stay positive. Your studious nature and upbeat personality have kept you sane during the waiting game. With a stellar academic track record, you’ll be sure to find success.

Pisces

As a Pisces, you’re probably freaking out about the whole college admissions process. Remember, deep breaths! You got this. Pisces love to overthink and double-check everything, so even though you’ve reread your essays five hundred times, you’re still not satisfied. Just remember that you’re prepared and ready, press send!

Aries

By now, you’ve definitely sent out most of your applications—to your favorite schools, at least. Your essays are bold and creative, and as an established leader, you have plenty of accomplishments on your application, as well.  Aries are also known to have an impulsive attitude though, so chances are you also applied to a few random schools too!

Taurus

If you’re a Taurus, you probably have a well-rounded list of schools you applied to. None of them are too much of a reach, but you also don’t have any that are well below. Your patience kept you on track and on time during the application process, and it’s also keeping you sane during the waiting process. You know your strengths and where you’ll fit best, so you aren’t sweating the pressure. Chances are you’ll to use the same mentality to narrow down all your acceptance letters.

Gemini

Gemini are strong communicators, and that’s sure to shine through in the killer essays you’ve submitted. For you, the application season is a little tumultuous. You probably have no clue exactly where you want to go yet. The list of schools you have is pretty varied, and you’re hoping that hearing back will help with the decision.

Cancer

Cancers are probably sign to get most stressed during this time of year, although it’s not because of a lack of effort. You’ve spent plenty of time pouring over college apps and making sure everything is perfect, but when it comes to hitting the “send” button, you cramp up. Remind yourself that the process is exciting and all your hard work is going to pay off!

Leo

The creative mind of a Leo is not a huge fan of the college application process. You probably see it as a bunch of paperwork you would rather avoid, but you force yourself to put in your best effort all the same. At least you get to show off your creativity in your essays! You’ll probably get your apps in at the last minute, but think about how exciting it will be to hear back.

Virgo

Virgos are hard workers who love to analyze, so chances are that you finished all your application materials long before you actually sent them. Although ensuring all your accomplishments are displayed may have caused you distress, sending your apps out is a huge sigh of relief. You’ll all but forget about them until your first acceptance letter comes in the mail.

Libra

Libras don’t love the college application process, and the fear of getting a rejection letter is all too real. But, with such a keen mind and plenty of knowledge gained from lots of reading, you have nothing to fear. Your giving nature comes through in all of your volunteering and extracurricular activities.

Scorpio

Although Scorpios are usually super accomplished academically, you probably didn’t start your college apps super early. Not only did you apply to some of your top choices, but you also included some reaches. Chances are your brains and ambition will yield some amazing results. Just try not to let your negative side get you down before you even hear back from your schools. Stay positive, because your efforts will pay off.

Stressed? Calm? Anxious? Excited? Were the stars right?

HC Wake-Up Call: NYC's Deadliest Fire in Decades Kills at Least 12, Apple Will Discount Battery Replacements & How to Celebrate No Interruptions Day

$

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Deadliest NYC Fire in Decades Kills at Least 12

At least 12 people have died in a fire in a Bronx apartment building on Thursday night, The New York Times reports. Seen as the deadliest fire in New York City in more than 25 years, the threat also critically injured at least four people, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio. The fire broke out shortly before 7 p.m. in the five-story apartment building, with the New York City Fire Department responding to an emergency call within three minutes. The fire reached four-alarm status within an hour and required the service of more than 160 firefighters.

The fire is now under control, but its cause is still unclear as of Thursday night. The residential building, located near Fordham University and the Bronx Zoo, was reportedly more than a hundred years ago.

Apple Will Offer Discounted Battery Replacements

After admitting that it slows down older iPhones, Apple has announced that it would offer discounted battery replacements to soothe the company's relationship with customers. The New York Times reports that, when announcing the reduction of replacement prices, Apple denied that it had "intentionally" tried to shorten the lifespan of sold products. Apologizing for the "misunderstanding," Apple will offer out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacements for $29 rather than the usual $79. The reduced prices will be available in late January and continue globally until December 2018.

What to look out for...

No Interruptions Day is observed on the last workday of the year, and while most college students may not be busy with a nine-to-five job over the Christmas holidays, some may not be so lucky. If you are stuck at work today, use the time to finish any pressing tasks and plan ahead for the new year without getting distracted by minor things. Good luck!

8. Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter

We know we already mentioned the foundation from Rihanna’s makeup line on this list, but we can’t leave off Fenty Beauty’s Killawatt highlighter from this year’s best of beauty list. This highlighter has hella pigment, and the shade Trophy Wife is perfect for when you want the ultimate blinding highlight.

9. Kylie Cosmetics Cream Lipsticks

Our girl Kylie Jenner is giving us even more lip product options with her newly released cream lipsticks. This is the classic lipstick formula we all know and love, available in shades like the caramel-colored Dulce De Leche and plum shade Lovesick. But you have to be fast; these lipsticks sell out quick!

10. MAC Lip Duos

MAC Cosmetics entered the lip kit game this year. The beauty brand paired their already-existing cream lipsticks and lip pencils together to create easy, economical lip duos in shades such as fan favorite Ruby Woo.

This year was a lot of things, but can we all agree that 2017 was an amazing year for beauty products? Because it totally was. The only question is will 2018 hold as many (or more) beautiful makeup products as 2017? Guess we’ll just have to stay tuned!

Amanda Bynes Is Reportedly Planning an Acting Comeback in 2018

Amanda Bynes wants to remind us that she's still All That in 2018. After a 7-year acting hiatus, Bynes' lawyer told Page Six that the child star is looking to make her return to the big (or small) screen in 2018, Us Weekly reports.

"She has had several offers but is waiting for the right one to come along for a comeback," he said.

Among these offers is one reported to be a revival of The Amanda Show, which originally aired from 1999-2002 on Nickelodeon. Bynes was just 13 when the sketch comedy show began, and her talent at such a young age made her a highly sought after comedic actress in the years after the show's cancellation. Her movie stardom boomed after the show ended, including beloved teen hits like She's the ManSydney White and What a Girl Wants, all of which she starred in. She showed her musical chops in a supporting role as Penny Pingleton in Hairspray alongside Zac Efron. Her last film appearance was as the uber religious Marianne Bryant in Easy A in 2010.

Bynes famously retired from acting at the age of 24 in a now-deleted Tweet, in which she claimed that acting isn't "as fun as it may seem."

She went into a legal tailspin following her retirement, getting her first DUI in 2012, which was later followed by two hit-and-runs. A video of her driving and smoking a bong was released the same year by TMZ. In 2013, her Twitter became the source of much controversy — she candidly spoke about plastic surgery, called out multiple celebrities for their looks, and made sexually explicit comments to Drake. A few months after throwing a bong out of the window of her NYC apartment (yikes), Bynes was arrested and placed in an involuntary psychiatric hold.

Bynes' mother, Lynn, became her conservator following her arrests, gaining control of all finances and legal decisions. Bynes enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in LA in 2014, and plans to restart her acting career once she graduates.

Her most recent TV appearance was a 2017 interview she did with Hollyscoop, where she admits to being "on drugs" when tweeting at Drake.

"I do miss acting and I actually have something surprising to tell you," Bynes says in the video. "I'm going start acting again."

With financial independence again, a fashion degree, and an outpouring of support from loyal fans, 2018 is shaping up to be the year of Amanda Bynes.

Dylan Sprouse Is Opening His Own Bar in Brooklyn

We remember bleach blonde Dylan Sprouse from our elementary school days of swooning over him on Disney Channel in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Or maybe now we think of Dylan's hilarious Twitter — where he often goes after twin, Cole or rips on his own childhood acting. Or we just recall that he's the Sprouse twin not in Riverdale. But now, Sprouse is taking on a whole new path: bar owner and brewer at All-Wise Meadery, which is set to open sometime in 2018.

As you probably remember, after the spinoff of the original hotel-based show entitled The Suite Life on Deck ended in 2011, the Sprouse twins enrolled at NYU, seeking normalcy. Dylan majored in video game design and started working as a coffee barista in 2013 in the East Village, where he created custom lattes and poured craft beers. Rumors started flying that the twins had lost their Disney fortunes, but Dylan was really just developing his love for creating tasty and unique drinks.

Testin teas #mead #brooklyn #allwise

A post shared by All-Wise Meadery (@allwisemeadery) on

Throughout his time at NYU, Dylan learned how to brew his own alcohol, even taking an internship at a brewery. After making his own vodka, bourbon and beer, he settled on his favorite: mead. Made from honey, water, yeast, and a choice of fruits, mead is the center focus of Sprouse's bar, which is set to open in the coming months.

Sprouse toldVulture that he spent much of his Disney fortune to set up All-Wise Meadery, where he is the the youngest head mazer in the country. In super trendy Williamsburg, Brooklyn, All-Wise is part brewery, part bar, and mead is offered on-tap or by the bottle — or mason jar. Sprouse also wants to interact with his customers and be an active presence there.

"I'm a people person. That's my bread and butter," Sprouse told Vulture.

For those of us who miss Sprouse's smirk or mischievous ways gracing our screens, don't fret. He's still acting, but don't expect to see him in a blockbuster any time soon. His interests are Indie films and low budget productions. Or, just head down to All-Wise Meadery if you want to catch a glimpse. He's probably brewing something up.

The Best YouTube Beauty Videos of 2017

$

The internet has come to a general consensus that a lot of 2017… sucked. Aside from the memes, one part of 2017 that undeniably continued to grow and improve was the beauty community. 2017 was the year of becoming more makeup accepting––showing no matter who you are, your gender, or what you want to wear, makeup is for you. We saw the release of Fenty Beauty, and the rise of male makeup gurus. We became more accepting of weird lip colors, “caking” our face, and not giving AF what other people thought. In my opinion, the beauty community became better in 2017.

To celebrate, here are my top picks for the best, and most inspiring beauty related Youtube videos of the year!

1. KIM KARDASHIAN WEST MAKEUP TUTORIAL | PatrickStarrr by PatrickStarrr

The Rundown: Kim Kardashian West followed in her younger sister’s footsteps this year with the release of her own beauty line, KKW Beauty. Kim explained that she wanted to immerse herself more into the world of beauty gurus and YouTube. “It’s so fun getting to know this whole world. I’m so fascinated with how you made this whole career for yourself just off of YouTube, and everyone connecting with you — and they’re connecting with you for a reason,” she said. Not only did we get to see some of our favorite beauty YouTubers, like Patrick Starrr, test out her new products, but we got to see Kim step out of her comfort zone.

Air Date: August 2, 2017

Best Moment: 10:40, when Kim explains her fascination with beauty and YouTube. Coming from someone who oftentimes seems larger than life, this humble moment put Kim into a new (positive!) light.

2. TOP REQUESTED! My Signature Look! | مكياجي اليومي المفضل! by Huda Beauty

The Rundown: Huda Kattan is a makeup artist, beauty blogger and founder of Huda Beauty, based out of Dubai. She was even named one of the “The 25 Most Influential People on the Internet” by Time. In this video, she sits viewers down and goes in-depth about how she creates her iconic, signature, look. A rundown of how to do makeup the same way as one of the most influential people in the beauty industry? Yes please!

Air Date: March 30, 2017

Best Moment: 4:40, when Kattan shows us how to apply her signature lashes in the style Farah. False lashes were the first product released by Huda’s brand in 2013, and while the brand has now expanded into eyeshadows, foundation and lip products, they are still most famous for their bold lashes.

3. ABH SUBCULTURE PALETTE...WTF? by Alissa Ashley

The Rundown: The Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture Palette was one of the biggest beauty scandals of 2017. Many beauty lovers assumed that the highly anticipated palette would be similar in quality and formula to the best-selling Modern Renaissance palette. However, the brand received backlash as YouTubers started to receive the palette and review it. Common complaints were that the shadows were too powdery, had too much kickback and were difficult to blend.

Air Date: August 3, 2017

Best Moment: 12:30, when Ashley shows how easily the shadow crumbled, with just the lightest touch of her brush.

4. FENTY BEAUTY by RIHANNA... HIT OR MISS?! | Jeffree Star by jeffreestar

The Rundown: Fenty Beauty has taken the beauty world by storm since its release this past fall. The brand debuted with a massive line, consisting of primer, foundation, concealer, contour, highlighter, lip products and essentially everything that you need for a full face of makeup. While fans believe in Rihanna, many wanted to hear a review on the product before they spent all of their money. Jeffree Star uploaded an extensive review on the entire collection as soon as he could get his hands on it, making this one of the most viewed Fenty-related videos on Youtube.

Air Date: September 8, 2017

Best Moment: 15:35, when Star tries out the highly coveted (and, spoiler: highly pigmented) highlighter Trophy Wife.

5. FREE STUFF BEAUTY GURUS GET | Unboxing PR Packages ... Episode 1 by Tati

The Rundown: The ultimate beauty guru gave viewers a peak into the life of a beauty YouTuber, and spilled the tea on what an influencer with millions of followers (3.5 million to be exact) actually gets for free. Through reviews, tutorials and hidden sponsors, it can sometimes seem as though everyone who’s interested and passionate about makeup is spending their entire paycheck (plus some!) on beauty products. Tati goes into depth about how a lot of the products she reviews are free and a necessary part of her job––and likely not necessary for the average makeup lover.

Air Date: March 2, 2017

Best Moment: 11:00, listen to Tati explain how her fame didn’t come overnight. It came from handwork and a love of makeup. You don’t get to the point of getting thousands of dollars worth of free makeup from brands on pure luck.

6. HOW TO GET LONG-LASTING & FLAWLESS MAKEUP ALL DAY LONG!  by NikkieTutorials

The Rundown: Lets be honest, if you’re following a YouTube tutorial––especially one from NikkieTutorials, who constantly talks about how she prefers a look that is anything but natural––there's a good chance that you’re wearing a lot of makeup. While many videos will show you how to perfectly blend your eyeshadow, contour or apply falsies, few talk about the behind-the-scenes magic that goes into a look to make sure that it stays on past the time that it takes you to take a selfie. Nikkie dives into the lengthy measures that she takes to ensure that her makeup stays on all day.

Former Bachelorette Andi Dorfman Says There's Only 1 'Bachelor' Guy She'd Date

Three years since her run as the Bachelorette, Andi Dorfman is living the single life and keeping her eyes peeled for Mr. Right. The former district attorney hasn't had much luck in the relationship department, as we learned from her first book, It's Not Okay, which detailed her troubled romance with contestant, Josh Murray. Now out from behind the cameras and with a second book on the way, the 30-year-old knows exactly what she's looking for — and this one guy from the Bachelor franchise just might have it.

Andi's new book, Single State of Mind, tells the story of the reality star's return to the reality of dating. As she tells Us Weekly, the extravagancies and whirlwind dates that she became accustomed to on-screen, isn't necessarily what she's looking for in her off-screen love life.

"I’d like to go to a nice dinner with a good guy," she explains. "You know, good food and good conversation. It doesn't have to be fancy. I don’t need to be blown away. I’ve done the helicopter rides and castles — and we all saw how that turned out! I’m OK with normal."

So is there a chance that Andi could reconnect with a fellow Bachelor nation alum? According to her, the host of the franchise may be the only suitable choice.

“I’m not against it but I wouldn’t say I’m seeking out a guy from Bachelor Nation by any means.” She jokes, "Unless is was Chris Harrison!"

The duo's close friendship has sparked romance rumors in the past, but Andi confirms that the pair, "would never date," though they, "have a little fun with it still." So Chris Harrison isn't Andi's perfect match, but she has yet to be discouraged.

"I now know what I’m looking for," she continues. "I’m not going to give my exes credit for steering me in this direction, but it’s helpful to look at relationships and be like, 'OK, I don’t want that in a man.'"

As for what Andi does want in a man? She says, "someone supportive and someone who accepts me for who I am, beyond reality TV. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous about a guy Googling me. But my past isn’t going anywhere, so I’m going to have to find someone who is OK with that."

Andi's Single State of Mind comes out on Jan. 9th, so we can learn even more about her relationship revelations, post-Bachelorette dating and "normal" life.

I Tried a 7-Day Cleanse from the Victoria’s Secret Angels’ Nutritionist

The Inspiration

The idea for this article was born almost a year ago, as I sat watching the Annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in the TV room of my sorority house. Seated around the flat screen that was broadcasting the show, my sisters and I “ooh”-ed and “ahh”-ed at the stunning wings, ornate bras, sky-high heels and of course, the Angels’ sculpted physiques as they strutted down the runway.

Last year’s VS Fashion Show displayed a shift in the models’ aesthetic; no longer looking emaciated and stick-thin, last year’s Angels looked more athletic with defined arms, chiseled abs and toned legs. Sure, they were all still skinny and Amazon-tall, but it was obvious that they had spent a considerable amount of time strength training and working out in anticipation of the show. Wanting to know the ~secret~, I did a little digging to find out about how exactly they prepared for the show.

The name that popped up on every piece related to the VS Angels and their Fashion Show prep was Dr. Charles Passler. Dr. Passler is a New York-based nutritionist beloved by the fashion industry for helping models and celebrities to look amazing by managing their health, not sacrificing it. I scoped out more articles and his nutrition practice’s website and products to find out if he practices what he preaches, so to speak.

Everything I found seemed to indicate that he believed looking amazing is a byproduct of optimal self-care, which was refreshing to hear from someone who works so closely with an appearance-driven industry. It then clicked in my mind that with my busy schedule, a gratuitous affinity for wine and dark chocolate, and a tendency to overstress, my own self-care could hardly be described as ‘optimal.' I had read many articles (like this one from Elle) from editors who reported on what it was like to receive the ‘Angel’ treatment from Dr. Passler; that is, his personalized health and lifestyle counseling along with a plan to cleanse from overindulging, and to detox for a New York minute.

I wondered, what would that plan look like on a college student’s busy schedule and limited resources? Is tuning into your body’s needs reserved for the fashion industry’s elite? (Spoiler: the answer is no.) So, I decided to undergo the 'Angel' treatment to see how it would affect an ordinary college girl.

The Consultation

I reached out to Dr. Passler’s office and within a matter of days Dr. Passler himself reached out to me. While he is very personable, he’s also a no-BS kind of guy. He has a no-excuses philosophy and believes that total self-accountability is the only way to make the kinds of changes many clients come to him to see. I wasn’t immediately ready to change up my habits, but when I was, I reached back out to him and he was excited to set me up with a consultation in his New York office within the week.

Given his high-profile clientele (and my unhealthy obsession with Gossip Girl), I was expecting his practice to reside at a posh address on the Upper East Side. Instead I found it nestled among a pretty block of trendy juice bars, coffee shops and vintage boutiques near NYU.

Shortly after checking in with the receptionist, Dr. Passler greeted me and brought me back to his consultation office, where we got down to work.

The aforementioned ‘Angel’ treatment is a seven-day cleanse and detox called Pure Change. Aptly named, the two-step program involves evaluating how you approach stress management, breathing and meditation, your sleep patterns, eating habits, hydration and exercise. Then, going on a weeklong cleanse using the included nutritional supplements to maintain your intake of vitamins, minerals and protein while you’re eating mostly vegetables for the week. This alarmed me at first because I prefer to eat whole foods and stay away from meal substitutes like bars and shakes. Dr. Passler explained to me that the kit is specially engineered to ensure that you never deprive your body of the fuel necessary for you to go about your day as usual, while also giving it a break from any foods that cause digestive or endocrinal distress.

There are tips and tools for self-evaluating your lifestyle in the detox kit, but since I could make it to New York City, Dr. Passler and I evaluated these things one-on-one. Not surprisingly, he informed me that I practice poor stress management because I expend lots of energy on distressing myself over things I can’t change. According to Dr. Passler, clients who don’t manage their stress effectively consequently see some impact on their eating habits. I immediately called to mind my “I’m stressed”-stash of dark chocolate and my “I’m super stressed” Ben & Jerry’s pint, but I digress. He used the VO2machine in the office to evaluate oxygen intake—I learned that my breathing is very shallow which isn’t conducive to stress management, either. As it turns out, sleeping is one of the areas that I do excel in; Dr. Passler recommends getting eight hours of sleep while on Pure Change if you don’t already, and since I can’t function on anything less than 10 hours of sleep I was already ahead of the curve there.

Next, we discussed my eating habits. For the most part, Dr. Passler felt I was eating a healthy diet though he did say that everyone (me included) could benefit from eating more vegetables. He also said my hydration habits were good; I didn’t drink more than a cup of coffee a day and I drank at least a liter of water every day. Finally, we talked about how much I exercise and I was happy to hear that running three times a week for about a half-hour was satisfactory. He did recommend that I limit strenuous exercise (like circuit workouts, kickboxing, or long runs) while on Pure Change, since the program does not account for the additional calories required to exercise intensely without losing muscle mass or becoming extremely fatigued. During the consultation, he also conducted a weight and body composition analysis. I knew going into this that I was already at a healthy weight, so I wasn’t terribly anxious about this part.

With that, our consultation was finished, so Dr. Passler and I parted ways and his assistant gave me the full Pure Change kit before I left the office. He also reminded me to reach out to Dr. Passler when I started the program so that we could touch base if I had any questions during the process. Leaving the office, I felt excited at the prospect of taking this challenge to listen to my body and make the changes I wanted to see and feel.

The Cleanse

My consultation with Dr. Passler was on a Friday, and I started the Pure Change program on the Sunday after I got back from New York. On Saturday, I pored over the brochure explaining which foods were allowed while on the cleanse, and how a day’s worth of food would break down. My food intake each day worked like this:

-Breakfast: 1 meal replacement shake

-Snack: Half a protein bar

-Lunch: 100 calories worth of vegetables plus a tablespoon of oils

-Snack: Other half of the protein bar

-Snack: 1 meal replacement shake

-Dinner: 100 calories worth of vegetables plus a tablespoon of oils

-Hydration: at least a liter of water throughout the day

-Vitamins: 2 probiotic capsules, 1 magnesium capsule and 1 vitamin packet (including fish oil, a multivitamin, and iron)

It was important that I ate every 2-3 hours so as not to get ravenously hungry, and I wasn’t allowed coffee on the premise that caffeine obstructs our ability to feel when we need to sleep. I also wasn’t allowed to eat anything other than the enclosed dietary supplements and the vegetables on the approved list of foods. This meant no grains, no meat, no dairy. Thankfully, I could mix the shakes with almond milk, which made them thicker and taste a little richer.

I was a little bummed that I wouldn’t have the absolute freedom in the kitchen that I was used to, but the program was all about changing up what I was used to, right? I figured that since I enjoyed cooking with vegetables often, and I liked protein shakes (which were a staple in between heading to the gym and class) the week wouldn’t be too hard. To prepare, my boyfriend, Rob, went grocery shopping for all the staple vegetables that we typically cook with (like bell peppers, kale, spinach, zucchini, yellow squash, eggplant and more) and I started brainstorming recipes for the week ahead. Here’s how the week unfolded!

Day 1: Sunday

In the morning, I woke up, went for a quick run, then came back home and had one of the Pure Change protein shakes. I have a major sweet tooth, so the vanilla flavor was sweet enough that it tasted good but not like I was drinking sugar. Plus, it was filling! An hour into the program, I was going strong.

I spent the rest of the day catching up on homework. I chose a cookies and cream protein bar for my two snacks of the day, and although it was chewy and a little sweet, it tasted pretty good. For lunch, I recalled a Food and Wine recipe for spicy baked carrots and made enough of those for lunch and dinner, then served it topped with olive oil, per the program. The rest of the day passed uneventfully, until my boyfriend decided to cook baked ziti with mozzarella cheese, vodka sauce, and Italian sausage for dinner. I was more than a little bit grumpy that he made such a delicious smelling dinner full of foods I couldn’t have, and served myself my dinner of carrots while he had the ziti.

Day 2: Monday

I woke up for my internship, speedily got ready, then threw a protein bar, a shaker cup of almond milk, and a little Tupperware of protein powder into my purse before running out the door to catch the subway to work. I had established a routine of walking into work, putting my lunch in the fridge (unless I decided to Honeygrow it for the day) then grabbing a cup of coffee from the kitchen before settling into the day’s tasks. More out of habit than anything, I missed my morning coffee today. I compensated by drinking extra water after I had my morning protein shake, but I was then helpless to fight off the 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM energy crashes that hit later that day. I made a mental note to get to bed extra early so that I would be able to make it through the next day without practically falling asleep.

I tried a chocolate chip cookie dough protein bar, and then for lunch I picked up a DIY salad from Honeygrow with arugula, tomatoes, spinach, and olive oil on the side. The whole salad totaled out to just over 100 calories, so I had the entire thing for lunch, which was incredibly satisfying. I was astonished at how large a 100-calorie serving of vegetables was.

The rest of the day passed a little slowly without my occasional trips to the coffeemaker or the office candy jar when I got stuck with writer’s block. I realized that I drink more coffee than I thought I did, and I eat more chocolate than I thought, for that matter.

For dinner, Rob and I made stuffed bell peppers. Mine were stuffed with spinach (I really like spinach, okay?), diced tomatoes, and topped with chili flakes, salt, pepper, and olive oil. Rob’s were stuffed with the same vegetables, black beans, and ground turkey. His peppers definitely seemed tastier, but I think that’s just because I was so used to having a natural protein with every meal, as opposed to shakes and supplements.

Day 4: Wednesday

I won’t regale you with play-by-plays of each day while I was on the Pure Change program, because after the first couple of days it became somewhat of a routine (not unlike adjusting to a new semester’s schedule). Nothing horribly eventful happened on Tuesday, but today was my scheduled check-in with Dr. Passler.

It was business as usual at my internship. I couldn’t stand not having something to sip as I got my morning tasks done at work, so I started to experiment with the herbal teas (which were caffeine-free, thus, allowed) kept by the coffee in the kitchen. I discovered a few flavors I genuinely enjoyed, namely the Twinnings brand apple pie-flavored herbal tea.

On my break from work, I gave Dr. Passler a call. We caught up on my experience thus far with Pure Change, and he asked me how I was feeling so far.

“Well, to be honest, the shakes and meal bars have actually worked really well with my busy schedule. It’s so convenient to wake up and grab my food and go,” I told him. “And, while it’s a bit of a change to only be cooking with vegetables, it’s also teaching me that I don’t eat nearly as many veggies as I should. I guess something else that it’s teaching me is that I’m somewhat of an emotional eater; like, I eat when I’m bored and really have no reason to.”

I continued my part of the conversation, talking about the fact that I identified that dairy, too many grains, and kale cause me digestive distress and since I’d avoided those foods thus far, I had enjoyed not feeling the familiar pangs of my lactose intolerance.

Dr. Passler was overjoyed to hear what I’ve been getting out of the program. I don’t want to misquote him, but the gist of what he told me was that my experience is exactly what he had in mind when creating the program and the ideal experience he wanted his clients to have. He wanted Pure Change to give his clients a chance to step out of their day-to-day routine and identify things like food sensitivities and unhealthy eating habits. I ended our conversation feeling accomplished; it seemed like I was cleansing correctly and I had more knowledge about myself to show for it.

Day 5: Thursday

While my conversation with Dr. Passler was reassuring, I was also starting to get a little bored with my food prep. I tend to cook the same few dishes which doesn’t get boring when I have total freedom to vary my ingredients or go out to a restaurant for some meal inspo. I was feeling uninspired and a little hangry at this point, so I wasn’t sure how the next two days would go for my mood.

I had a night class on Thursdays, so Rob told me he would have a dinner surprise waiting when I got home. I walked into the house and a glorious aroma greeted me: Rob made ratatouille from scratch and it was a marvel.

The sauce probably had more sugar and salt in it than was ‘permitted’ on Pure Change, but it was nice to feel my taste buds sated in a way that’s kind of challenging to articulate here. It made me appreciate the culinary autonomy I often take for granted when debating what to make for dinner or what to order on the occasional dinner date. It also made me feel optimistic about sticking strongly to the program for the next two days.

Day 7: Saturday

Friday passed with me having a newly strengthened resolve to follow the Pure Change program to a tee. Since no alcohol is allowed on Pure Change, I had a quiet Friday night in, which allowed me to wake up early on Saturday.  Now that my last day on the program was here, I was anxious to pass the day and use my newly-acquired self-awareness to curate my meals and make other changes in my self-care to help me feel my best.

I woke up and had a protein shake for breakfast, then tossed a bar in my bag and went out to do some shooting for my photography class. For lunch, I came back and savored my ratatouille leftovers, then planned dinner for Rob and myself. We walked to our local Trader Joe’s and picked up one of their frozen stir-fry bags, which, soy sauce packet notwithstanding, is just unsalted (and permitted) veggies. I tossed mine with avocado oil and enjoyed the second evening to my quiet weekend in. I know my Saturday wasn’t exactly riveting, but frankly, I didn’t have the energy fix to stay up until 2:00 AM. Plus, I ended up super well-rested, which is brag-worthy in my eyes.

The Takeaways

When I first thought of this idea for a health experiment, I had no idea that I would learn so much about myself. For starters, I was always extremely quick to judge the idea of a cleanse or detox because I thought they all involved unsafe and ill-conceived quick-fixes for long-running lifestyle choices. I maintain that there are many of those kinds of programs that exist, but in my opinion, Pure Change wasn’t one of them.

At the risk of sounding like that annoyingly healthy friend you love to hate, the things I learned about myself while on Dr. Passler’s program motivated me to make changes after my week of Pure Change was over. For example, when I stopped to think about how many coffees I drink absentmindedly every day (twice as much as I thought), I cut down my coffee consumption and instead drank more water and tea because I slept better—and in the subsequent days, I felt so much better and more rested.

It was also valuable to have controls in my diet that let me figure out my food sensitivies. I realized that I can’t eat too much pasta, dairy, or kale without feeling bloated and generally icky.

While I enjoyed these aspects of Pure Change, one thing that I wasn’t so crazy about was restricting my exercise while on the program. The better I felt while on Pure Change, the more I wanted to exercise. But if I did too much, like a run every day or a Kayla Itsines circuit workout, I felt crazy tired. I know that part of cleansing involves giving your body a break (Dr. Passler was very clear on that), it just wasn’t ideal for how well I was feeling while cleansing.

Once I was off the program, I had these choices up to my discretion and I made it a priority to drink more water and less coffee, eat more vegetables and start a more balanced workout regimen. To answer my initial question going into this experiment, the ‘Angel treatment’ is totally doable for a college woman. In fact, it was a great way for me to reset from the midterm craziness and pay attention to what my body needed during a time that self-care typically fell by the wayside. I certainly won’t be gracing the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway anytime soon (and by soon, I mean ever), but I know that this year, I’ll feel much healthier and more in tune with my body than the last time I watched the VS Angels grace the runway.

Pranksters Might Have Tricked Nikki Haley Into Making Comments About A Country That Doesn't Exist

Two Russian pranksters allegedly tricked Nikki Haley into getting the United States United Nations Ambassador to comment on "Bimono," a small island in the South China Sea...that doesn't exist, The Hill reports. If they were truly speaking to Haley, which isn't clear at this point, that's obviously massively embarrassing for her and the U.S., which honestly can't handle much more international humiliation.

In the over twenty-minute phone call, posted to YouTube, Alexei Stolyarov and Vladimir Kuznetsov, who go by Vovan and Lexus, posed as Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. They discussed Polish-Russia relations for the majority of the prank call, but then bated her into talking about the fictional island of Binomo.

"One more matter is the island Binomo. It's not far from Vietnam in the South China Sea...You Know Binomo?" the man said and Haley replied “yes, yes.”

They went on to create a nice little story about how Binomo had declared independence: "They had elections and we suppose Russians had its intervention,” the man on the phone said. "Yes, of course they did, absolutely," the person who is allegedly Haley replied.

She continued with her confident knowledge, assuring the fake Prime Minister, “We’ve been watching that very closely, and I think we will continue to watch that as we deal with the issues that keep coming up about the South China Sea.”

The fake Morawiecki obviously wants to know what the United States plans to do about Binomo, because that's important stuff.

"Let me find out exactly what our stance is on that, and what if anything the U.S. is doing or thinks should be done, and I will report back to you on that as well,“ Haley said. She does evade giving any clear opinion on the matter, which makes sense because it's awfully hard to take a hard stance on an international political issue that doesn't exist.

John Degory, a spokesman for Haley, told The Post and Courier  they "have nothing to share on that at this time." Hopefully, by some grace of God, the whole thing was fake and America can be spared from more international criticism. But based on this past year's luck, it's probably real. *sigh*

Viola Davis is the definition of elegance. Few would be able to rock this bright yellow one-shoulder Michael Kors gown, but count on Davis to work it and own it.

4. Kendall Jenner, NBC’s Golden Globes After Party

13. Jourdan Dunn, Cannes International Film Festival

International supermodel Jourdan Dunn looked stunning in this Jonathan Simkhai jumpsuit at the Cannes International Film Festival. Tbh, it’s hard to rock a pantsuit for any occasion, but a glittery pantsuit? We’ll take the L and let Dun have this one.

14. Sara Sampaio, Cannes International Film Festival

Everywhere we look it seems like Sara Sampaio is on the cover of either a magazine or killing it in on the Victoria’s Secret runway. It was no surprise that Sampaio embodied chic at the Cannes International Film Festival in a gorgeous Zuhair Murad gown in fiery red.

15. Lorde, MTV Video Music Awards

After making her return to the music scene this past year, Lorde looked like a true princess while she rocked the MTV VMA’s red carpet in a feathery lilac ball gown by Monique Lhullier.

16. Jennifer Lawrence, NYC Premiere of Mother!

17. Millie Bobby Brown, Emmy Awards

At only 13-years-old, Millie Bobby Brown is one of the best dressed stars in Hollywood. At this year’s Emmy’s, everyone’s favorite Stranger Things actress stepped out in a Calvin Klein by Appointment tulle strapless gown that gave us serious ballerina vibes.

18. Bella Hadid, amfAR Gala

We can always count on Bella Hadid to absolutely slay, and that was proven when she walked the carpet at the amfAR Gala in Rome, Italy. Hadid wore a beautiful crystaline dress by René Caovilla, showing off some major leg with a deep thigh-high split.

19. Natalia Dyer, Stranger Things 2 premiere

Stranger Things’ Natalia Dyer may be a newcomer to the red carpet, but she has yet to let us down with any of her looks. At the premiere of the hit Netflix show’s second season, Dyer wore a vintage-looking Christopher Kane dress with her newly dyed blonde hair finishing the whole aesthetic.

20. Aly Raisman, Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards

Former Olympic gymnast, Aly Raisman, made a powerful speech about sexual abuse at Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards. Speaking out against the former Team USA’s doctor Larry Nassar, who Raisman stated sexually assaulted her, the light pink gown made Raisman look like the pinnacle of strength as she represented others who have also faced sexual assault and harassment.

So there you have it––some of the best red carpet looks of 2017! These women all had something extra special to their gowns, whether it was sparkly embellishments, bold colors, or daring thigh-highs and plunging necklines. After looking back on this year’s styles, we can’t wait for even more innovative looks to debut in 2018.

As 2017 year comes to a close, we can all agree that this year was low-key a dumpster fire. Now Donald Trump Is Commenting On That Vanity Fair Hillary Clinton Video

Despite the fact that Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton over a year ago and should be focused on, geez I don't know, running the country, he just couldn't help himself when Vanity Fair apologized for a satiric video that many found insensitive and belittling to the very accomplished politician/former Secretary of State.

In the satirical video "Six New Year's Resolutions for Hillary Clinton,"Vanity Fair offered up some advice for the former presidential candidate, starting with "It's time to start working on your sequel to your book, What Happened...What the Hell Happened" and finishing with what people considered the most condescending suggestion, “Take up a new hobby in the new year: Volunteer work, knitting, improv comedy, literally anything that will keep you from running again.”

While the jokes were lighthearted enough, after many accused the publication of of sexism and just general poor taste, Vanity Fair issued an apology. "“It was an attempt at humor and we regret that it missed the mark," a spokesperson for VF said.

Donald Trump's tweet also bring Anna Wintour, the artistic director at VF's owner Condé Nast, into the drama. He suggests that she wanted to be ambassador to the UK under Hillary Clinton, but even though that has been rumored before, that assertion was never really substantiated. Besides that, what a bizarre thing to bring up. Was he planning on making her an ambassador? Probz not. So who tf cares.

In Vanity Fair's defense, they did not isolate Hillary Clinton. They made videos with the same "Six Resolutions" format for other politicians too, like Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Gary Cohn and President Trump himself. Also, it's clearly a joke. That being said, none of them weren't funny enough to be worth posting. Some were downright cringy. Pro-tip: to pull off controversial humor, it actually has to be funny. All tea, no shade at VF: just saying. Also, per the usual, Donald Trump's commentary was unnecessary and unwanted.

Honestly, maybe everyone's resolution for 2018 should be to chill tf out.

On A First Date With A Trump Supporter, Woman Drinks Too Much Red Wine, Destroys Over A Million Dollars Worth Of Artwork, & Faces A Felony Charge

If you think you've suffered the most embarrassing first date of all time, then think again, because freelance court reporter Lindy Lou Layman has probably got you beat. According to SFGate, Layman had quite the night on Friday during a first date with attorney Tony Buzbee. You know how it goes...first you're enjoying a nice glass of red wine, next thing you know he's ordering you an Uber and telling you you're drunk, and then -boom!- you're facing felony charges. Or is that not quite how your nightmare of a first date went?

So here's what we know: Layman is a 29-year-old freelance court reporter from Dallas. Buzbee is a well-known attorney, most widely recognized for successfully defending former Texas governor Rick Perry in an abuse-of-power case.

Although most reports allege that the two were on a first date, Buzbee told Texas Lawyer that “Layman came to his home with others and that he had not met her prior to that evening.”

According to Heavy, throughout the course of the night, Layman became intoxicated and refused to leave Buzbee’s house, even when he ordered her an Uber. She then began to tear paintings off of the walls, pour red wine on the paintings, throw sculptures across the room, and shout, “I’m not leaving!” Same, Lindy.

The real kicker is that Buzbee’s paintings weren't just from his local Home Goods. Buzbee is, like, really rich. The Houston Chronicle states that when Buzbee bought the mansion in 2013, it was worth $14 million. And, according to KHOU-TV, “Two of the paintings were original Andy Warhol pieces worth $500,000 each, and the two damaged sculptures were valued at about $20,000 a piece.” Layman was arrested Saturday and released the following day on a $30,000 bail.

Another ~interesting~ individual who has found his way into the Buzbee home is none other than Donald Trump. In June 2016, Buzbee hosted a fundraiser for Trump, and told KHOU that he was “honored to host him.” Thankfully, Buzbee did denounce Trump after the Access Hollywood tapes were leaked in October 2016. We can't deny, though, that destroying artwork that Trump once admired would be a lot more fun than destroying artwork that he, you know, didn't admire.

If you guys were wondering if this kind of first date is normal in the wealthy-attorney-have-Trump-over-for-dinner world, then the answer is no. When recounting the night to Texas Lawyer, Buzbee said: “She at some point appeared too intoxicated and she was asked to leave. She wouldn’t and got angry because she didn’t want to leave. The police dealt with it. It’s not the first time I’ve had guests at a party of mine over imbibe. Most leave when you ask them. She didn’t.”

7 Ways 2017 Was Actually Better Than 2016

As we say boy, BYE to 2017, it’s time to reflect on what this last year has done for us. By December it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the weight of all the things that went wrong. I mean, I don’t blame you — 2017 certainly wasn’t wonderful. However, in the interest of optimism, we need to acknowledge that some things have gotten better since the dumpster fire that was 2016. Check out these seven ways that 2017 one-upped its predecessor.

1. We got Riverdale

Riverdale is a huge part of pop culture now, and we’re not mad about it. It’s hard to imagine what life was like before four oddly mature-looking 16-year-olds with very, very complicated lives graced our screens, but I heard it was more stressful.

2. There were fewer celebrity deaths

In 2016, we lost many so many celebs who made a significant mark on this world. Prince, David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Muhammad Ali, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, just to name a few. Although loss is a fact of life that occurs every year, 2017 felt a little less heartbreaking (thank goodness).

3. The Women’s March kicked the year off strong

On January 21, people all around the world came together to call for an equitable and tolerant world, addressing issues of gender, race, class and the environment.

The Independent reported that the Women’s March was the largest and most peaceful day of protests in U.S. history. The movement’s impact transcended borders, with 673 marches occurring globally, according to the Women’s March website. Now THAT is a huge win for women in 2017.

4. Scientists proved that dogs are good for your health

Possibly the best news of the year, Swedish scientists proved that dogs are good for your health and I finally feel seen. Their study found that owning a dog can decrease a single person’s risk of death by 33 percent, VICE reported. Add that to the never-ending list of reasons why your doggo is the only good boy you need in your life.

5. It was a generally good year for music

2016 was hard to follow after blessing us with new albums from Beyoncé, Solange, Chance the Rapper and Rihanna. But then Lorde and Ke$ha made their long-awaited returns, SZA dropped one of the best debut albums in the history of music and Kendrick Lamar released DAMN., which speaks for itself.

6. This guy got free chicken nuggets for a year

Carter Wilkerson proved that the internet is not just a black hole of bad memes. After breaking the record for the most retweeted tweet (3.6 million), Wendy’s bestowed the young fellow with enough chicken nuggets to make a person (possibly) a little tired of chicken nuggets.

7. North America collectively fangirled over the solar eclipse

On August 21, people across the continent all stopped to take a look to the sky and witness the moon pass between the sun and the earth. The last time we witnessed a solar eclipse was 1991, according to NASA, making this ~kind of a big deal~. But even if you didn’t catch the eclipse, at the very least we can all laugh-cry together about that one photo of President Trump trying to stare directly at the highly dangerous and potentially blinding phenomenon.

At least he did something worthwhile.

From endless chicken nuggets to permanent retinal damage, 2017 took us on an interesting journey. Let’s hope that we continue on this semi-upward trend and that 2018 brings even better memes, scientific phenomenon and significant cultural moments. Maybe next year I can even come up with eight points.
