A Complete Guide on How to Go "No Poo"

0
0

If you haven’t heard of the “no poo” method, it isn’t exactly what it sounds like (phew!). The no-poo method simply involves cutting out shampoo from your hair care routine to re-strengthen your strands. But getting started may be daunting, as there are a ton of different ways to become a no poo-er, and different methods work better for different people—so how do know which will work for you? We’ve talked to experts and no poo-ers themselves to find out as much as we can about the method.

What are the benefits of the no poo method?

Some of you may be wondering what the benefits of the no poo method are if you’ve been shampooing your whole life. Why change your routine now? What many people don’t know is that shampooing your hair can actually be pretty damaging. One of the main benefits of no poo is that you'll be avoiding the harmful toxins that unnatural shampoo formulas may utilize. These toxins can take a serious toll, making hair too dry (or too greasy), weaker and harder to grow out. Even worse, unhealthy ingredients can be found in unexpected places, like synthetic fragrances, which are one of the main (and most popular) damaging offenders on your shampoo's ingredients list.

Additionally, while shampoo cleans your hair, it also takes away the natural oils that make your hair healthy and soft. Using conditioner to supplement isn't an ideal solution either, as you’re actually just putting more chemicals in your hair. And if your hair gets greasy easily, it may be because it’s deprived of its natural oils and is therefore, producing more.

So, if you want to reverse the damage done, the no poo method can do just that! Andrea Lavinthal, the Style and Beauty Director at PEOPLE, says, “Fans of the ‘no poo’ method say their hair feels softer, looks shinier and is generally healthier than it was when they were using standard shampoo. Plus, some replacements, like baking soda and apple cider vinegar, are a great option for people who prefer eco-friendly beauty products.” Lavinthal makes an important final point—the chemicals in shampoo get washed down the drain whenever you rinse, so by eliminating shampoo, you’re also potentially limiting the amount of chemicals being released into the world!

What are some common replacements for shampoo?

Luckily, there are a few different replacements for shampoo, so you’ll have plenty of chances to find a suitable alternative.Need help choosing? The porosity of your hair can help you determine which method will work best for you.

Baking soda and apple cider vinegar

“A combo of ‘washing’ with baking soda and ‘conditioning’ with apple cider vinegar is the most popular method,” Lavinthal says. Mix one part baking soda with about three to four parts water; you can apply this formula to wet or dry hair, massaging into the roots before rinsing. Then, combine one part apple cider vinegar with four parts water, and gently pour it evenly through your hair before rinsing it out.

Baking soda and apple cider vinegar are great for oil control. Chelle Ivancic, a sophomore at DePaul University, shares, “I was the one who originally took the nose dive in my family of four curly haired women. They were all worried about putting the vinegar on their hair. The way I see it, if I can put it on my salad then why not my head? After they saw how much my curls improved and the moisture level in my hair went up, they all jumped on board.” Need more proof? Chelle has been donating her hair for 14 years now because it is so healthy and grows so fast!

Cleansing conditioner

“Another option is to use regular conditioner or a cleansing conditioner (this is called ‘co-washing’). Cleansing conditioners are exactly what they sound like: conditioners that contain very mild cleansing agents,” notes Lavinthal. Wen, for example, has a great cleansing conditioner that doesn’t contain damaging ingredients.

Tabia Robinson, a senior at SUNY Albany, shares, “I don't use shampoo anymore because it dries out my hair. I am African American and I have natural hair and I find that shampoo of any kind always dries out my hair so now I just use conditioners to wash my hair and my hair is always bouncy and has sheen when I'm done.” Of course, if you find that just using conditioner makes your hair greasy (which it may), opt for something different.

Egg wash

Egg washes cleanse, condition and strengthen your hair. Even better, the protein in eggs can add volume, so this type of wash is especially good for those with thin hair. The downside? You must avoid warm water or the egg will start to scramble mid-shower! Another thing to keep in mind is that egg washes should only be done a couple times per month to avoid overdoing it on added protein.

Ready to try? Simply beat an egg, apply it to your wet hair, leave it in for 5 to 15 minutes and rinse with cool water.

Rye flour wash

The vitamins, minerals and nutrients in rye flour will make most people’s hair very shiny and smooth, and the more finely ground, the better. You can buy rye flour on Amazon.

To get started, mix about three tablespoons of rye flour with about three tablespoons of water, massage it into wet hair, leave it in for 5 to 15 minutes and fully rinse.

Water only

For the water method, all you have to do is rinse your hair with warm water, scritch and preen it (massage your scalp and use a boar bristle brush to pull the oil down your hair) and let it air dry. This method, however, does not work well with hard (mineral-rich) water.

Should you try the no poo method?

If you have overly dry or greasy hair or are simply looking for a more natural, non-toxic way to care for your hair, give the no-poo method a try. “You can't really know if the no-poo method will be right for you until you try it,” Lavinthal advises.

“One caveat: You have to stick with it for a month or more since there's usually a notoriously icky transition period when your hair looks like a grease ball. But fans of the method swear that shiny, healthy hair will be waiting on the other side,” says Lavinthal. Most reports indicate that the entire transition period is about three months. During the first month, your hair may be very greasy, while during the second month your hair may have a lot of static. Then, during the third month, your hair will start to look better but may be frizzy. After these three months are over, though, your hair will look better than ever!

That being said, not everyone will have a positive experience with the no poo method. Lindy Olive, a senior at Auburn University, says, “I have been doing the baking soda and apple cider vinegar instead of shampoo and conditioner for over two years. It has made my hair thick. However, it dried out my hair and I'm looking for a different method now. I used coconut oil and tea tree oil to replenish some of the oils, but it didn't help much because it got so dry over time.” Unfortunately, since everyone has different proteins in their hair, each person’s hair will react differently to certain methods. “I encourage everyone to try it, but for me, it didn't work out,” says Lindy.

But if dryness from one method is the case for you, don't immediately lose hope! Co-washing and cleansing conditioners may be a better choice. “They're typically best for people with very dry, thick or curly hair,” Lavinthal shares. “Fine, straight hair might look greasy and heavy. The most important thing is to use more product than you normally do and scrub your scalp really well with your fingertips. This helps break down oils and remove residue from styling products." Once your hair has transitioned, you can introduce shampoo into your regimen without undoing all of that work! "If you like the way your hair looks, but your scalp is feeling itchy and gross, it's OK to use a clarifying shampoo every two weeks or so,”  Lavinthal says.

All in all, if you’re sick of your hair routine and are looking for something more healthy and natural, no poo is definitely worth a shot. You’ll have to stick it out for the first few months, but your devotion will be rewarded with longer, stronger and even more beautiful hair! So while it may take some getting used to, many swear that the results are worth it. Good luck, collegiettes!

HC Wake-Up Call: Obama & Clinton Are Most Admired Man & Woman in U.S., Disneyland Suffers From Power Outage & Starbucks Debuts Black & White Mocha Collection

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

New Poll Shows That Barack Obama & Hillary Clinton Are Most Admired Man and Woman in the U.S.

The Huffington Post reports that according to a new Gallup poll, former President Barack Obama is the most admired man in the United States for the 10th year in a row. Obama came in on top with 17 percent of participants naming him as who they admired most, while President Donald Trump finished in second with 14 percent of respondents' votes. Hillary Clinton was named the most admired woman for the 22nd time and 16th consecutive year, winning over nine percent of voters compared to runner-up Michelle Obama's seven percent. Surprisingly, a quarter of participants didn't name who they admired most, regardless of a pick's gender.

Power Is Restored at Disneyland After Lengthy Outage

Power was restored at Anaheim's Disneyland after several hours of an outage stranding some guests on rides, CNN reports. A transformer issue caused the loss of power in portions of the park's Toontown and Fantasyland areas before 11 a.m., affecting about a dozen rides. Guests were escorted off halted rides and power was eventually restored by 4 p.m. Once the power was back on, Disneyland allowed re-entry into the park for its guests. The outage's impact was particularly notable because it occurred during the theme park's busy holiday week.

Starbucks Introduces New Beverages to Celebrate the End of the Year

Starbucks has gone crazy with new drinks this year, particularly in the last few months, and it's not letting the last week of 2017 go by without a new caffeinated addition to the menu. On Wednesday, the chain dropped its Black and White Mocha Collection, which includes three new drinks that are perfect for New Year's. The Black and White Mocha comprises of espresso roast combined with white chocolate, dark mocha sauce, steamed milk, whipped cream and chocolate "sequins" in the shape of a black tie. Made without the espresso, the Black and White Hot Cocoa is a similar mixture, while the Black and White Frappuccino mixes its sauces with Frappuccino roast coffee, milk and ice. Um, hitting up my Starbucks to try one of these out ASAP!

What to look out for...

I don't know about you, but I've been pigging out on chocolate all week in a post-Christmas frenzy. Now I have an official reason to keep this chocolate binge alive: Dec. 28 is National Chocolate Candy Day, and I definitely plan to celebrate it.

If you’re looking for a fun and boozy way to get more glitter into your NYE bash, look no further. HelloGiggles has a recipe for golden champagne jello shots and they’re exactly the thing you never knew you needed.

You could absolutely be just that much more extra and add some edible gold flakes to them. Either way, though, the combination of champagne, ginger ale and agave nectar in the jello shots will make sure you’re ringing in the new year on a gold note.

And with only ten minutes needed to mix them together before popping them in the fridge to chill, they’re just as low-maintenance as the average house party jello shot. So you can look like you're doing the absolute most while doing the least.

After dealing with everything 2017 had to throw at us, we all deserve to hope 2018 has something better in store while indulging in gold-tinted bubbly.

Khloe Kardashian Isn't Here for Your Criticism of Her Pregnancy Workouts

Despite the fact that she's finally letting fans in on the details of her pregnancy, Khloe Kardashian has made it clear that she's not here for your attempts to tell her what she should or shouldn't be doing in order to give birth to a healthy baby in the new year.

It's no secret that the Revenge Body host loves working out — so it makes sense that she'd continue to stay healthy and fit as long as she's safely able to during her pregnancy, right? Wrong, according to some people who are trying to tell her how to live her life. After she shared a video of some of these aforementioned pregnancy workouts on Snapchat, which involved the use of weights, a step machine and a resistance band, she received some backlash for doing something that is perfectly healthy (and often recommended by doctors!) during pregnancy.

Of course, because she's Khloe Kardashian and she isn't afraid to call anyone out, she was quick to take to Twitter to clear things up for everyone trying to tell her what she should be doing with her body.

Along with the tweet, which included a v strategic use of the facepalm emoji, Khloe shared an article outlining not one or two, but 33 benefits of working out throughout pregnancy.

So there, haters. And for the love of everything, please stop telling Khloe how to live her life because goodness knows we want her to keep sharing as much as she can about her baby on the way.

Kim Kardashian West's New Icy Blue Hair Is Giving Us All the Winter Vibes

It looks like Kim Kardashian West had a very blue Christmas. The mom of two (soon to be three!) debuted an icy blue shade just before the holidays. Her hairstylist Chris Appleton was the first to reveal the new ‘do, posting a photo to Instagram of the reality star in an all-blue outfit, giving a whole new meaning to “head to toe” look.

In a tiny tube top, sweatpants and an oversized fur-trimmed coat, Kim avoids looking too matchy-matchy by playing with various shades of blue. But, lets be honest, she could step out in a garbage bag, and it would probably be the next musty-have look.

Appleton accompanied the candid-looking photo with the snowflake emoji, which is a perfect shade match to her hair, leaving fans wondering if a Kimoji might have been inspired by it. Either way, they’re loving it:

However, others were quick to point out that Kim wasn’t always a fan of blue hair. Her younger sister, Kylie, was sporting an iconic blue ombre at the same time that Kim was set to marry her now-husband, Kanye West. On an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim made her thoughts known, saying to her younger sister, “We must talk — the blue hair. I’ve got to be honest, are you going to get clip-ins or something to make it not blue?” When Kylie decided to stay blue for the big day, she said, “I cannot stop staring at her blue hair. Why does she have to have blue hair at my wedding?” Kim eventually said that she would “let it go”… after all, I’m sure there were more important things to worry about during her lavish event.

Regardless of what happened in the past, it seems like Kim took some inspiration from her youngest sister, and we’re here for it. Do you think snowflake or emoji inspired hair will be the next big thing for 2018? Only time (or a Kardashian) will tell.

Dr. Pimple Popper Is Getting Her Own TV Show & I'm Already Grossed TF Out

Lets be honest — Dr. Pimple Popper is everyone’s guilty pleasure. As much as you sometimes hate to admit it, its impossible to look away from her gross-yet-fascinating pimple popping videos that usually make you feel fortunate that you only have those few pesky blackheads.

Dr. Pimple Popper, otherwise known as Sandra Lee, is a dermatologist that has earned fame for her Youtube videos, that have amassed over three million subscribers. Zits being taboo are basically a thing of the past now, and if you’ve ever been tagged in a can’t-look-away zit video, you likely have Lee to thank. Her videos are so popular that she’s now officially graduated from her Youtube channel to television, with a TLC show appropriately named This Is Zit.

Lee describes the show, which premiers on January 3, at 10 p.m. ET, as “behind-the-scenes footage of what I do in my office, how I go about doing it, more explanation of the types of things that I pop out, a lot of my favorite videos, a lot of my top pops... and three never before seen pops are there for you as well.”

Lee announced the premise of her first episode on Facebook, and if the short video above is any indication, it will be equal parts fascinating and gross. In the episode, Lee removes an epidermoid cyst, which is when the skin has "turned under and formed a little sac.” The end result looks like a “hard boiled egg,” that, if you couldn’t already guess, has to be popped.

If you can’t wait until the new year to indulge in some pimple popping goodness, you can check out Lee’s Instagram account, and be apart of the 2.6 million people who have no shame watching the grosser side of the human body. If Lee’s Instagram and Youtube channel subscribers are any indication, her new TV show is going to be huge

This Artist Upcycles Louis Vuitton Bags Into 'Star Wars' Sculptures & They're the Coolest Thing You'll See Today

Star Wars Louis Vuitton sculptures: when nerdy meets boujee, in a combination that seems like it would only be real in a galaxy far far away. Artist Gabriel Dishaw is “upcycling” Louis Vuitton bags and luggage, as well as well as braided wire, computer chips and electronic material, to create some of the movie franchise’s most iconic masks, including the ones worn by Darth Vadar, Kylo Ren and all of the stormtroopers.

Dishaw isn’t just giving some of the series’ most notorious villains a fashionable update––he’s following his unique passion and artistic style. He explained in a post on his website, “My passion for working with metal and mechanical objects has been essential in the evolution of my art. It provides me an avenue to express myself in a way that brings new life to materials such as typewriters, adding machines and old computers – technology that would normally end up in a landfill. My mission is to create dialogue and help find creative, environmentally sound ways of re-purposing e-waste.”

The pieces speak for themselves. If you’ve ever thought that there is nothing better than a traditional Louis Vuitton, just wait till you see these.

If your Speedy bag suddenly pales in comparison, Dishaw is selling his unique sculptures. However, as you can imagine, between his designer materials and artistic ability, these don’t come cheaply. While some are already sold out, you won’t be able to get one of these masks for under $2,500. Lets hope that they come with The Force already included.

What do you think the chances are of convincing Disney to give some of the most beloved characters a luxury makeover?

Queen B is queen of many things, including the music industry, Instagram and style. Her hair has always been one staple that makes her looks so iconic––who can forget her braids in "Formation", or her golden waves in "7/11"? One hairstyle that always stood out to us was her blonde lob via "Flawless" and "Drunk in Love". Luckily, it seems that she has decided to bring that haircut back, slaying just as much as she did before.

A fan instagram account, Beylite, just released photos featuring Beyoncé’s new 'do, and we’re in love. Of the three photos, one features her clad in all yellow, perfectly complementing the honey highlights of her lob. The other two show Bey barefoot on a boat wearing vintage sunglasses and an elegant polka-dot mini dress, obviously.

Both looks are incredibly chic, with her hair being the focal point of it all. Although Beyoncé herself hasn’t posted a picture of her new look yet, we’re hoping that it’s on its way. Maybe it will even break her record for most likes!

Solange Knowles Is Canceling Her New Year's Eve Performance for a Very Important Reason

0

Although she was scheduled to perform at Afropunk Fest in South Africa, Solange Knowles has announced that she'll instead be taking the rest of the year off to focus on her health, revealing to fans that she's been struggling with an illness for most of 2017.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, the singer used a lengthy caption to explain to fans that she, along with her doctors, had decided it wouldn't be healthy for her to take such a long flight and perform immediately after due to an autonomic disorder she's been battling for the last five months.

"The past five months I have been quietly treating, and working through an Autonomic Disorder," she wrote in the post. "It's been a journey that hasn't been easy on me...Sometimes I feel cool, and other times not so cool at all. It’s a complicated diagnoses, and I’m still learning so much myself."

Wrote, deleted and re wrote this like 5 times... Still not sure what exactly or how much I want to share... However it’s so important to me for the people in South Africa, a place that has tremendous meaning to me and that has given me SO SO MUCH, to know why I won’t be performing at Afro Punk this NYE. The past five months I have been quietly treating, and working through an Autonomic Disorder. It been a journey that hasn’t been easy on me... Sometimes I feel cool, and other times not so cool at all. It’s a complicated diagnoses , and I’m still learning so much myself, but right now, my doctors are not clearing me for such an extended lengthy flight, and doing a rigorous show right after. I can’t put into words how saddened and sorry I am that I am unable to perform for you guys this NYE, there is simply no other place I wanted to be than there with my family to bring in 2018 with you.......but I give you my ABSOLUTE WORD I will come back with AfroPunk and deliver this performance.....as it is so extremely important to me to connect with the people who have so closely inspired me in so many ways. I can’t thank Afro Punk enough for their support, and to all of the other festivals this past summer/fall who have known about my health, kept it confidential, and gone out of their way to make me feel supported while doing these shows. As a part of the self care that I’ve tried to encourage this past year, it needs to start with myself, and I’m looking forward to doing a better job of this 2018. This past year has been one of the most fulfilling of my life... Performing this record and experiencing the energy exchange with you guys has been astounding, and I’m so excited about continuing to do the work I feel so absolutely humbled and appreciative to be doing next year. It gives me life.

A post shared by Solange (@saintrecords) on

While Solange didn't reveal the exact type of disorder she's currently being treated for, autonomic disorders result in the breakdown of the autonomic nervous system, which controls many of the body's involuntary functions such as heart rate, body temperature and blood pressure.

Solange went on to apologize to fans and reassure her South African fans that she'd be back soon once she was feeling better. "I can’t put into words how saddened and sorry I am that I am unable to perform for you guys this NYE, there is simply no other place I wanted to be than there with my family to bring in 2018 with you.......but I give you my ABSOLUTE WORD I will come back with AfroPunk and deliver this performance.....as it is so extremely important to me to connect with the people who have so closely inspired me in so many ways," she said.

As Entertainment Weekly reports, Solange has been forced to cancel two other concerts this year, including her performance at Florida State University's homecoming concert, which, at the time, she said was due to a "medical condition."

She's far from alone though — other celebrities including Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez have been forced to take time off from performances and appearances in the last year due to their own battles with chronic illness. We're glad Solange recognizes there's nothing wrong with prioritizing your self care (especially since she wrote a song about it!) and we hope she makes a speedy recovery.

That Liam Hemsworth & Miley Cyrus Wedding isn't Happening Any Time Soon

0
0

Miley Cyrus has been a pretty open book since her re-engagement to Liam Hemsworth in 2016. Earlier this year, she mentioned she wasn't ready to get married to Liam just yet. Though we all hoped that her opinion would change and we'd see a Hemsworth wedding eventually, Miley is holding firm on her choice to wait.

The couple haven't even started to think about a wedding, that's how serious they are about staying where they are. "They consider themselves married,” a source told Us Weekly. They even said Miley and Liam, "still have zero plans of having an actual wedding." This is kinda cute, TBH.

The source went on to tell the magazine that the couple has several friends with children and even that isn't enough to spark a want for a family, let alone a wedding plan. "Miley loves playing with babies but isn’t ready to start a family of her own quite yet," the source told the magazine. Well, I guess that's that.

Before you get discouraged, just think about how they're in a really good place right now. Who needs a wedding when you know the couple already feels like they tied the knot? If none of this is easing your sorrows about not being able to see Miley in a wedding dress, let's just look back at how far they've come, shall we?

The year 2009 was the where it all began, when Miley and Liam were in The Last Song together. Though they claimed to be just friends, the pair made their first red carpet debut in 2010 as a couple for an Oscars event. Within the same year, they break up and get back together again — twice. Third time's the charm I guess? In 2012, engagement rumors fly around because Miley is wearing a ring on *the* finger at Liam's premiere for The Hunger Games. After a denial from Miley at first, the couple finally reveals in June 2012 that they are engaged.

After a little over a year of being engaged, the couple calls it off in September of 2013. Liam and Miley go their own ways for awhile, which is where Patrick Schwarzenegger comes into play. She dates Patrick for awhile but they eventually break up in 2015. In early 2016, Miley is spotted in Australia with Liam's family, which sparks the rumors that the couple is back on. Shortly after, the two are spotted together and Miley is seen with her engagement ring again. Finally, after several Instagram posts together and a lot of evidence that the couple is back together, Miley confirms their engagement in October of 2016 on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

This condensed timeline just goes to show that Miley and Liam have a long history. They've been through a lot and they're finally in a really good place. Why bother rushing into a marriage when they're just happy to be together? Patience is truly a virtue, and I think one day we'll see a wedding, but for now, let's just be happy they're so in love.

Didn’t Get That Internship? Here Are 5 Career-Boosting Alternatives

0
0

The overall internship process is a struggle, and you deserve a break. You have to apply like crazy to positions you might not even get, come to terms with being broke AF while working your butt off and also somehow find the time to focus on your studies. Overwhelmed? Same. That’s why we have a few career building suggestions you can do on your own time without the stress of intern life.

1. Blog

You’re already sitting at your computer all day watching Netflix, so why not fit in some productivity? Blogging is cheap, fast and necessary for any person trying to market themselves to future employers. You get to have a website all to yourself to humblebrag about your accomplishments and lowkey pretend like thousands of readers are invested in your daily life. Girl, get on this!

Hayley Brandt, a junior at James Madison University, is a fashion blogger and has found blogging to be necessary for establishing her personal brand and connecting with other women who share her passion. “My blog is handy because I can send interested employers to it, and they’ll see a polished, fashionista version of myself I want to sell them,” she says. “I can also network with women who have my same minimalist fashion style and career interests, and one day we might help each other get hired!”

Whether you’re a numbers whiz whipping up your own math theory, an aspiring writer or future POTUS, your blog is a tangible way for people to get familiar with you and your skills. Plus, whatever you blog about will be practice for the real thing one day! Make sure to check out platforms like WordPress and Squarespace for your first blogging experience. This creative outlet is definitely a collegiette-approved way to build your career.

2. Certificate Programs

Maybe your major isn’t cutting it, or you can’t stand sitting in your gen ed lecture any longer. If you’re looking for a new area of study, we recommend completing an online certificate program to add supplementary knowledge towards your professional interests and put that extra cherry on top of your resume. Even if you’re so over classes and homework, a certificate program involves short term study for all the rewards.

Tammy Martin is a Career Counselor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and while she specializes in helping engineering students find their paths after college, she works with Cal Poly students from all majors. Dr. Martin thinks that any student pursuing a multifaceted career should pursue an extra certificate. “Many students are surprised to hear about the option of certificate programs, but I recommend one at least once a day,” she says. “I just had an Architectural Engineering student come in who was worried about his success in areas of design and art, so I pointed him to online programs that would be more marketable on his resume than an internship would be when he enters the workforce.”

Sarah Ahern, a junior at UCLA, has tried this approach and loves how helpful her certificate is. “I got a feature film writing certificate from UCLA because I want to be a playwright but I thought this would help me too,” she says. “Now if I ever want to write film scripts or need to for my job I’m totally equipped to do it, and I feel like it makes me more desirable to hire since I can do both.”

From massage therapy to medical transcription to court reporting, any hiring manager would be so impressed to see that you took the time to put this extra skill under your belt. Also, can’t we agree this sort of training is way more rewarding because of how specifically targeted it is? A certificate or two will do wonders to build your career. Don’t wait any longer!

3. Network

It’s true that you have the power to make your dreams happen, but having help from others doesn’t hurt either! Networking with professionals and peers that share your career interest will help teach you what steps you need to take to get your dream job, give you a foot in the door to more opportunities and guarantee you a few friends in the business. Some of the people you network with may be your key to an internship or employment opportunity, so take advantage of communication.

Lucy Campbell is a junior at Aberdeen University and has seen the benefits of networking. “After my first internship I stayed in touch with everyone I met through LinkedIn, and then the summer after one my co-interns I worked with got hired at a law firm and helped me do a summer program there by giving me a recommendation,” she says. “During the program, I networked like crazy and tried to meet everyone, and since then I’ve kept in touch so maybe someone will hire me later.”

To network, start by reaching out to all the professionals you know so far. Check in and see how their lives are, then ask if they know of any open opportunities. Even if they say no, still ask to conduct an informational interview with them. For every new experience, try to make a genuine connection with people and lasting professional relationship. Not only will these new friends help you build your career, but also keep you feeling supported.

4. Volunteer

If you’ve failed at getting an internship and Googled “internship alternatives” (we know you have), you’ve probably found that one of the top recommendations is to spend your time volunteering instead, just to something to put on your resume. However, just because you didn’t get that internship shouldn’t make a volunteer opportunity into settling. In fact, volunteering is a gratifying way to pursue your passion while also giving back in a meaningful way. ~Plus~ you get to put it on a resume so it’s a win all around.

Morgan Mazzocco, a senior at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, has found that volunteering is invaluable. “I want to go to grad school for museum studies, but in the meantime, I’m volunteering at local museums to get experience,” she says. “I think people get turned off by the idea of working for free, but in a way volunteering is just like doing an unpaid internship. Through volunteering, I’ve learned how to handle art and set up exhibits, which gives me so much prior experience to what I’ll do in grad school.”

Dr. Martin agrees that volunteering is something you should actively pursue. “Oftentimes volunteering will give you hands-on experience that an internship won’t. You should put multiple volunteer activities on your resume by the time you graduate.”

The most important thing is to volunteer somewhere that matches your professional interest. The work can help you learn a specific skill or fill in gaps in your knowledge. This supplementary learning may be even more valuable than an internship would have been, so definitely seek out volunteer opportunities. You’ll be thanking us later!

5. Start your own project

If an internship isn’t in your future, then take matters into your own hands and start a personal passion project. If you’re an artist, then illustrate your own graphic novel. If you’re a physics buff, then compile some independent research. Whether you travel, design or invent, take that time you would have spent interning to create tangible work you can show off. It’s personally fulfilling, and if your project is successful then definitely seek out getting your work published or bought. Even better, university departments will often pay for your independent project, so talk with your department head to see what options are available. Let’s be real, we’d take pretty much any cool opportunity that comes our way, especially if we don’t have to pay for it.

Don’t get stuck thinking that an internship is the only way to advance your future. From marketing yourself on social media to asking your professor for a reference, there are small things you can do every day to set yourself up for unprecedented success. When you are ready for an internship, make sure to check out our job and internship board for the best opportunities. We can’t wait to see how you do!

Arie Luyendyk Jr. Doesn't Care If You Think He's Too Old to Be the Bachelor

All the drama of The Bachelor will be here very soon and Arie Luyendyk Jr. is ready to find love. After the announcement was made that he'd be the next bachelor, fans of the show are poking fun at the 36-year old's age, but Luyendyk Jr. doesn't care.

The gray-haired retired race car driver knows he looks a little different in comparison to the previous Bachelor candidates, but he isn't the oldest one to hand out roses. "I think it's my premature gray because Nick was older," he told PEOPLE. Arie is not letting his hair color hold him back- he is actually using it as an advantage. "I’m in a different place in my life than when I was 30: a little bit older and wiser — and grayer, but it’s good."

After discussing his age with the magazine, Arie mentioned the reaction fans had to the announcement that he was the new bachelor. For all the Peter fans out there, Arie knows you were waiting for him to be the choice this season, but he isn't letting that get in the way of his chances for love. "People expected it to be Peter, so there was a negative reaction, but you’re always going to have that,” he said. "Not everybody is going to be a fan. What was important was that the women were on board." That's a positive outlook.

So what does the gray-haired, now real estate agent want out of this season? He's counting on marriage. "I came to get engaged. I want to be married. I want to have kids. I want to go back to the life I had six months ago but share that life with someone. I'm not going to go on Dancing With the Stars." I wish him the best in finding his forever.

We can all watch his pursuit for love starting Jan. 1. I can't wait to see how this season unfolds.

The Teaser for Jay-Z's 'Family Feud' Music Video Is Here & It Looks Like There Will Be Some References to Cheating on Beyoncé

Jay-Z wasn't about to let 2017 go without dropping one last production masterpiece for his fans. On Friday, the rapper is releasing a new music video for his song off the 4:44album, "Family Feud."TIDAL dropped a teaser on Thursday, as Entertainment Weekly reports, and it looks like the video is going to be a Carter family affair.

Beyoncé, who is featured on the song, and her eldest daughter, Blue Ivy, will both make appearances in the video. The 34-second preview starts with Jay-Z and his daughter walking through an empty church. Beyoncé waits at the end of the aisle, looking hauntingly beautiful in a head-to-toe navy ensemble. The sneak peek skips to Jay's face behind a confessional screen, as his Queen B listens on the other side. In between are takes of two lovers whose heated moment turns fatal. Jay-Z raps, "We all lose when the family feuds," and we can't help but see the connection between the lyrics and his own family drama.

As fans wait patiently for the full video to debut, here's another stunning snap of Bey to hold the world over:

Jelena's Reunion Probably Isn't the Only Reason for Selena Gomez's Complicated Relationship With Her Mom

It's confirmed: Jelena is official back together. As fans of the singers rejoice over their reconciliation, there is one person who is not in full support: Selena Gomez' mom, Mandy Teefey. We know that Teefey no longer follows her daughter on Instagram, and there are reports of her hospitalization following an argument with Selena over the controversial romance. But it turns out that Justin Bieber isn't totally to blame for Selena's estranged relationship with her mother, as E! News reports.

Multiple sources revealed to E! that family issues started way before the most recent Jelena reunion. "Selena has always said that the one person that means the most to her is her mom, Mandy," a source explains. "But still, they've had a really complicated relationship and have gone through a lot of ups and downs."

Reportedly, things have been rocky ever since Selena fired her mom and step dad, Brian Teefey, as managers back in 2014. "It caused a huge rift in their relationship," the source continues. "Mandy wouldn't even let Selena talk to her sister for a long time."

The mother-daughter duo reconnected both emotionally and professionally to work on producing the Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why, earlier this year. Sel walked the red carpet to support her mom during the premiere, but it wasn't long after that their ongoing issues emerged once more.

Mandy disapproves of Selena's relationship with Justin due to the couple's complicated history. But as Selena and her mom continue to drift apart, it seems Selena and Justin are only coming closer together.

"Selena is dealing with some family issues at the moment and Justin is there for her. He doesn't want to cause any problems between Selena and her mom... Justin and Selena are still together," another source confirms.

It looks like Jelena has a lot of trust to rebuild before the Gomez and Bieber clans can be one big happy family.

People Are *Not* Happy About Bono's Comments That Music Has Become Too 'Girly'

0
0

Bono, the lead vocalist of U2, conducted an interview with Rolling Stone that was published yesterday. In it, Bono and Jann S. Wenner of the Rolling Stones, discussed music, politics, and all in between, but one part stuck out to a lot of people — and they aren't happy about it.

"I think music has gotten very girly," the 57-year-old Irish musician said in the interview.

This raises the question of what he means by girly. It seems like Bono is referring to the number of women who have made it to the top of the charts recently. Cardi B reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart with her hit "Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)," making her the first female rapper in over 20 years to top the chart without an accompanying act. Taylor Swift broke multiple records with her newest album, Reputation. She sold 1.29 million copies in just the first week, and has already made her 55th hit on the Hot 100.

But according to Bono, "hip-hop is the only place for young male anger at the moment – and that's not good."

His insensitive and sexist comments are a problem for multiple reasons — chief among them the implication that being "girly" and feminine is somehow "not good" and the racially insensitive way he stereotypes rap as angry.

"In the end, what is rock and roll? Rage is at the heart of it," Bono later continues. "Some great rock and roll tends to have that, which is why The Who were such a great band. Or Pearl Jam. Eddie has that rage."

He says this as if women don’t have a place in rock and roll. What about Pat Benatar or Joan Jett? Janis Joplin and Stevie Nicks? And the list goes on. Last year, Glamour chose Bono as their Man of the Year for his Poverty Is Sexist Campaign. But, if you ask me, his music comment reeked of misogyny.

Mood Swings on Your Period: What’s Normal & What’s Not

0
0

Most of us are plagued by periods. We were raised knowing the drill — your period can mess with your body and emotions. But they can actually be different for everyone. Even if you’ve had your period for what feels like a million years, your PMS symptoms can change overtime.

According to WomensHealth.Gov, “Most women, over 90%, say they get some premenstrual symptoms, such as bloating, headaches, and moodiness.” If you’re one of the people who severely experience the latter symptom, it can be difficult to figure out if your symptoms are changing, or if your mood is abnormal.

Ultimately, you know your body best. However, there are some tips and tricks to figuring out if your sudden mood swings are caused by your menstrual cycle or not.

1. Educate yourself about how your body works

The first thing any woman should do is educate herself.

“By the time a girl is around 13 or 14, she should visit her gynecologist,” says Dr. Felice Gersh, an obstetrician and gynecologist who specializes in hormone management and integrative medicine. “Not because she needs a pelvic exam, but because it’s the time of her budding physiology.”

Though you may not have done this at the start of your period, it’s still a good idea to go in and meet with a gynecologist. The education system can be spotty when it comes to sex education, so meeting with a doctor to talk about your body is a sure-fire way to educate yourself on the way it works — especially when menstruating. Getting a handle on how your body functions can help you determine if your hormones may be negatively impacting your mood balance.

“Understand that there are receptors to hormones (progesterone and estrogen) all over the body that are multitasking, not just making periods. They’re all heavily invested in making hormones,” says Dr. Gersh. “When there are fluctuating levels of hormones, they have an effect on the brain …. There can be some variation in the menstrual cycle.” Your hormones ae shooting a bunch of different ways, so some mood swings are normal. One of the most helpful things you can do for your body and your period is to know how menstruation works.

2. Figure out what your ‘normal’ mood swings look like

Once you’ve got your own body on lock, it’s time to figure out if what you’re feeling is “normal” for your body. One of the best ways to do this is by downloading a period app. Apps like Clue or Period Tracker Lite are both great options that allow you to keep track of way more than just when you’re menstruating.

“My roommates and I got really into tracking our periods last year using the app Clue … When you look at mood swings, it's really cool not just to look at your period, but the other phases- your fertile window, your luteal phase, etc.,” says Hannah, a sophomore at University of Michigan.

All of these different phases in your fertile window can play a role in what you may be feeling or how you may be acting. “On your luteal phase you physically feel hotter,” says Hannah. “There's one phase when you crave sweets, and a different when you crave chocolate. I noticed that once I started paying attention to my entire cycle, I noticed that all my weird phases and quirks make sense!”

The tracking elements are available when you aren’t even on your period, so it’s a great way to look at any patterns that may be developing with your mood. If you look at your mood history and determine that it’s fluctuated or grown in intensity, it’s important to evaluate the extent to which the mood swings are affecting your life.

According to Dr. Gersh, mood fluctuations are bound to happen, but PMS should never interfere with your life. “If it is disabling, then that’s a problem,” she says.

If your period symptoms are so severe that you can’t live your normal life, then it’s probably time to visit your doctor. Before the appointment, keeping track of your actual mood with an app is helpful, and it may be beneficial to use your planner or a separate notebook to write down any specifics about spikes in mood that you experience.

3. Look at your diet

If you keep track of all of your PMS symptoms and determine that your mood swings may be abnormal, a beneficial step to figuring out what the problem could be is examining your diet.

“The first thing that any young woman who has bad PMS should do is look at her lifestyle. The body needs the essential tools to run its machinery … if you’re eating the typical American diet, it’s full of high sugars, a lot of unhealthy fats, it’s missing key ingredients,” says Dr. Gersh. “We now know that the way a woman’s brain works and the way her hormones work have to do with the gut microbiome, and those bacteria are key to maintaining brain health … the food you eat can calm your brain.”

Focusing on a healthy, well-balanced diet could be your solution. All aspects of the body are interconnected, so what you’re consuming can definitely play a role in how both your body and your brain feel.

Great eating habits to adopt include eating plenty of vegetables, fruits and consuming healthy whole grains that aren’t bread or pasta. Because your mood can be altered due to stress levels, Dr. Gersh also recommends drinking different kinds of teas that are known to have relaxing effects, like lemon balm, chamomile or holy basil.

4. Talk to your doctor

If you feel like you’ve tried everything and are still at a loss for the cause of your mood swings, it’s time to visit your doctor.

While we’re often taught to not talk about our periods, it’s important to put your health above social stigma. If you feel like you may be experiencing mood swings that are atypical compared to your usual period, make an appointment with your general practitioner or gynecologist.

It’s no secret that dealing with period or PMS symptoms can be unenjoyable. However, it’s important to figure out if your symptoms are more negative than they should be. By paying attention to the natural effects that your period has on your body, you can determine what is and isn’t normal.

A Comedian Is Being Sued After Banning Men From Her 'Girls Night' Comedy Show

0
0

Comedian Iliza Shlesinger, from NBC's Last Comic Standing, is being sued by a men’s rights activist after she banned men from attending her comedy show on Nov. 13, TMZ reports.

George St. George was turned away from Shlesigner’s routine dubbed “Girls Night With Iliza – No Boys Allowed," but the title of the show might’ve been the first clue that men likely weren't going to be permitted in the audience. While St. George was given a full refund for the two tickets he purchased online, he decided that justice still wasn’t served.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that St. George's attorney, Alfred Rava, has a history of filing class action lawsuits against organizations who are guilty of gender discrimination, although he typically only takes on cases that discriminate against men specifically.

Bustle explains that Rava believes Shlesinger broke the Unruh Civil Rights Act of 1959, as the comedy show specifically prohibited a certain sex from attending the event. Rava also noted that this type of discrimination is somehow comparable to the Montgomery bus boycotts (which it obviously is not comparable whatsoever). According toVariety, Rava used to serve as the secretary of the National Coalition for Men, which could explain his exclusive interest in helping men who feel like they’ve been discriminated against.

While it’s clear that it may have been a bit harsh for Shlesinger to disallow men from attending her event, could this actually be considered discrimination? Although the “Girls Night” special was geared toward women specifically, the comedian has several other shows that allow all genders to attend, and perhaps she wanted this exclusively female space to make a point about the state of today's society.

This isn’t the first time someone has been sued over allegedly discriminating against men. In June 2017, the Alamo Drafthouse movie theater chain was sued for screening women-only shows of Wonder Woman. According to The New York Post, the theater decided to host women-only screening as a way to embrace “girl power,” which makes sense seeing as Wonder Woman was the first superhero movie starring a woman since Elektra in 2005.

Given the hundreds of women who have spoken out against their abusers in the last several months, the “Girls Night” show could be seen as a safe haven for women—to get away from potential harassment and to have a lighthearted event to escape to. Maybe Shlesinger intended to use this comedy show as a way to support other women. Nevertheless, women aren’t the only ones who have been using their voices in the #MeToo movement, as seen by stories from men such as actor Terry Crews

Regardless of Shlesinger’s motives for hosting this women-only event, Rava and St. George will likely continue to fight this alleged discrimination. To be honest, what might be more discriminatory is the fact that Rava almost exclusively takes on cases defending men.
