The Hidden Secrets to Selling Your Clothes on Poshmark

This article has been syndicated from Uniquely Mickie, an InfluenceHer Collective Member. Read the full post here.

Have you ever wanted to sell your lightly used clothes, but didn’t want to deal with the hassle of a yard sale or uploading to Ebay? Well, I have the solution for you, which is the app called Poshmark. It’s a phone app that allows you to sell clothes, accessories, shoes and other items that you don’t use anymore. All you have to do is click a photo, upload to the app, and let the sales roll in––or so you thought. I thought the same the first time I posted to the app.

I first signed up to Poshmark in October of 2014, but for the first year or so, I had let my items sit on the site. I didn’t share them, the photos were kind of crappy, and I wasn’t online or active for weeks on end. After that year in 2015, I did another closet clean out and realized I had to start learning the secrets of selling on Poshmark, if I wanted to make a little extra money. So I did. I dabbled in different techniques until I found what worked for me. I can at least say that I was able to make Poshmark a fun hobby for a few years that brought in some cash. I’ve made about $1,500 to date.

If you’re just starting out on Poshmark, then keep on reading to learn my tips and tricks to increase sales and increase visibility of all of your items!

1. Take good photos

To have the best chance of selling a clothing piece, its best if you model the item as an outfit or use a mannequin to show what the item looks like on the body. If you don’t do this, you’ll constantly be asked to model in the comments because most people want to see what the item looks like on, instead of it laid down on the ground.

Poshmark updated some of their rules including the limit of how many photos you can upload to a single post. You can now upload more than 4 photos, but either way, you want to put the best photo as the cover photo. It’s going to be the first photo someone sees when they are scrolling through the app.

2. Posh parties

Get involved in the posh parties that are hosted two to three times a day. Posh parties are exactly what it sounds like––a party that people share their items to a page. These are great way to get exposure for your items so you’ll want to participate as often as you can. The parties do have themes or rules to follow by such “Best of Pants Party” or have only certain brands party.

3. Sell well-known brands

While I have sold not well-known brands or brands from my time living overseas, those items usually took longer to sell compared to more well-known brands. For an example, I sold my Adidas slides from high school in three days, but it took almost a year for a pair of white pants to sell that were from Germany. I would recommend having a mix of both if you do have less popular brands you want to sell. People might stop by your online store for one item and end up buying something else.

Mindy Kaling's Friends Threw Her a Holiday Party After the Birth of Her Baby Girl & It Sounded Amazing

Mindy Kaling just gave birth to her new baby girl on Dec. 15, so I'm sure holiday parties were the last thing on her mind. The actress clearly has the best friends though, because they threw her a themed holiday party and it sounded amazing.

The holiday party was themed after the movie You've Got Mail, with an incredible menu to match. Kaling posted a picture of the menu with the caption, "I usually do a holiday dinner with the young women that work with me but I’ve had a busy week! So they brought the holiday dinner to me. It’s a You’ve Got Mail Norah Ephron-themed holiday dinner, cooked and orchestrated by @asekar95 and @yo_its_hmo and it’s happening TONIGHT at my house. Look at this menu! Look at these Nora Ephron deep cuts! (Maybe for dessert we will have coffee... Patricia? Patricia’s amazing. Patricia makes coffee nervous.)"

OMG, High Maintenance Truffle Cauliflower Soup and Dark Side Chicken?! Count me in. This menu sounds delicious and the little graphics on it are so cute. The menu alone gives me FOMO, so I'm sure the party was filled with so much joy and laughter.

The party isn't the only You've Got Mail reference in Kaling's life. She just named her new daughter Katherine, which sounds to me like it could be a reference to the 90s movie. Kaling has thought about Katherine Kaling for a little bit and said she "loved the alleteration."

We all know she loves the movie, as she's talked about it before. Back in 2010, she said, "But I love You You’ve Got Mail. [The first time I watched it I was 18 and] I was very intimidated by New York and I didn't know it very well, and this movie really helped me, it made me fall in love with the city — it’s such a love letter to New York. I went to all the places in the film. And I decided that I love the Upper West Side. I remember watching it during Christmas and thinking, 'I wonder if I’ll ever have a really cute boyfriend like Tom Hanks, and sing carols around a piano?'" Girl, don't we all?

So maybe Katherine Kaling is a way to show Mindy's love for the rom-com. Kathleen Kelly and Katherine Kaling? Sounds close to me. The party seems to solidify this assumption, TBH.

Regardless of whether it's definitely a reference or not, it's clear that Mindy is enjoying her time as a new mother surrounded by friends who care enough to throw her a holiday themed party. BRB, planning one of my own right now.

This Man Found A Way To Stop Package Thieves With A (Literal) Bang

With the holiday just around the corner, gifts are being delivered throughout the country. And one man found a way to keep the package-thieves away.

Jaireme Barrow, 34, showed Tacoma, Washington police surveillance video of these thieves clearly stealing his packages, The Washington Postreported. Barrow believed the delivery was Jeep parts and electronics he had ordered. The robbers were never arrested.

So Barrow took matters into his own hands.

“I was thinking, how could I scare them and make them drop my package and then never come to my front porch again,” Barrow told The Washington Post. “And I thought, ‘Getting shot at is scary. That’ll make them think twice.’”

Barrow created TheBlankBox. The concept is for a thief to lift a dummy package which would trigger a 12-gauge shotgun blank to go off and evidence of it working is on YouTube.

Barrow said that TheBlankBox is very loud but technically harmless.

“The very first guy I did it to, he was so scared he dropped his cellphone in my front yard,” Barrow told The Washington Post. “I gave it to the cops. Turns out, he lived, like, three blocks away from me.”

Barrow has toyed with his device for nearly a year, but the invention is more important now than ever before.

In 2016, about 1.61 billion people worldwide made purchases online, equating to 1.9 trillion dollars. By 2020, it is projected to reach 4.06 trillion dollars.

And, according to the National Retail Federation, 58 million Americans shopped only online between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday. That is seven million more people than those that showed exclusively in stores.

Barrow is selling his invention to the public now too. TheBlankBox can be purchased here. The cheapest version costs $60.

TheBlankBox is one way to make a bang this holiday!

Why You Should Care About Where Your Favorite Sweater Came From – An Inside Look into Fashion & Ethics

It's so easy to stop into a sprawling fashion chain for a quick hit of retail therapy or buy ultra-cheap items on sketchy clothing sites, but do you ever consider how your favorite trends end up there? Turns out, these cheap 'fast-fashion' items come at a higher price than you might've thought. To learn more about the people who make our clothes, Her Campus spoke to the lead correspondent of PRI's Wear and Tearseries, Jasmine Garsd.

Related: 7 Fashion Influencers to Watch in 2018

According to Garsd, "most of the garment industry is [made up of] women - overwhelmingly so: in Bangladesh, for example, it's at least 80% of the garment workforce." The opportunity to get a job draws these workers in, who later find themselves working as virtual slaves in abhorrent conditions with little pay. Some are forced to stay until authorities literally bust down the doors to these inhumane sweatshops. And so the cycle unfortunately continues as work conditions stay abysmal and job market competition rises.

When asked how she became interested in this issue, Garsd says learning about the El Monte sweatshop was eye-opening. "It's a landmark case out of Los Angeles involving a sweatshop that was holding over 70 slaves [who were] forced to sew for a factory that sold to major retailers. It struck me how easy it was to run this operation for years (due in part to how segregated Los Angeles is)."

The journey that these clothes make often follows one of two global routes.

"If it's made in Los Angeles, fabric will be shipped in from Bangladesh or China. It is often already dyed or treated, which has tremendous environmental impacts in those countries," Garsd said. "Then, it gets cut, stitched and decorated at an LA sweatshop, often by immigrants. Wage theft is a huge problem in Los Angeles."

If products are coming from somewhere else like Bangladesh, Garsd says it will be put together there: "A woman can make as little as 68 dollars a month, often working 17-hour shifts. Then, [the garments are] sent to the US and Europe, where retailers will sell them for so much more.

So what can we, as college women, do to address the problem? Garsd says a good rule of thumb to keep in mind is, "if it's unbelievably cheap, someone is probably getting exploited." But, also be aware that pricer items may still be coming from an unfair source. If you're interested in seeing where your favorite brands line up, she recommends checking out the Clean Clothes Campaign, an organization dedicated to making the garment industry more transparent.

She also suggests paring down your wardrobe as well. It may sound like the end of the world to give up your monthly shopping sprees, but she stands by her philosophy of, "Buy less and buy better quality. It's not just humane, it's a smart investment - fast fashion is really bad for your wallet." Anything to save money sounds like a smart decision in my book, for sure.

'Riverdale' Fans Are Losing It Over This Adorable Photo of Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart

$

Cole Sprouse has already said that he won't be offering up any kind of confirmation that he and his Riverdale co-star Lili Reinhart are dating — but TBH, their latest photo together is kind of all the confirmation we need.

Skeet Ulrich, who plays F.P. Jones (a.k.a. Jughead's dad) on the show, shared a selfie of he and his TV-son Cole Sprouse along with Lili, that was taken on set in F.P. and Jughead's trailer. Sure, we're excited about the fact that we get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the cast while the show is on winter hiatus, and yes, we love that it is basically an adorable AF Jones family Christmas card — but the best part by far is the super couple-y way Cole and Lili are embracing each other.

"Happy Holidays from the Jones’ trailer!!! I hope that whoever you are and wherever you may be that you take a moment to spread love," Ulrich captioned the photo.

I mean just LOOK! Cole's super cute grin, the way Lili is hugging him — it's perfect, and I'm clearly not the only one who thinks so.

If this isn't a confirmation of their IRL relationship status — oh, and hopefully a hint that Bughead will be back together on the show soon — I don't know what is.

27 Things Chick Flicks Got Wrong About Your 20s

$

Love them or hate them, you can’t deny that chick flicks take up a huge portion of the movie universe. While movies aren’t exactly accurate portrayals of real life, you have to wonder why they assume that every 20-something’s existence revolves around love, looks and little misunderstandings. Here are some other ways rom-coms have got you all wrong.

1. Most of your time is spent stressing over finances, not stressing over love.

Having a SO isn’t going to fulfill you like a steady paycheck will.

2. And when someone does catch your eye, it takes more than good looks to fall in “like” with them.

Forget attractive people—the only thing your stomach flips for is pizza.

3. Seriously, you care about other things besides romance.

Even though you often fantasize about someone wanting you as much as you want abs.

4. If someone does like you, they’re not going to tell you through some grand romantic gesture.

Expect heart emojis in your inbox versus a boom box at your window.

5. But whatever, because you’re perfectly fine being single.

How can you be sad knowing that there’s a whole world of prospects that you haven’t been rejected by yet?

6. Actually, regardless of your relationships status, your world doesn’t revolve around having a SO.

If it does, there’s this super fun thing called independence—you should try it some time!

7. You also don’t have a group of nasty girls or “rivals” that you constantly butt heads with.

Because this is not middle school and we women have to stick together, damn it.

8. There’s way more diversity in your social circle/university/town than what’s depicted on-screen.

Or at the very least, you know that not everyone in this world is strictly white, straight, financially stable and able-bodied.

9. And your friendships aren’t side plots—they play a huge role in your life.

Literally the only relationships that count are the ones that will encourage you to eat peanut butter from the jar while PMSing.

10. However, every friendship you have right now isn’t necessarily built to last.

Things get in the way—and not just a school bus inciting murder rumors, a la Mean Girls’ Cady and Regina.

11. Especially since you’ll fight over lots of things—you know, instead of fighting over, say, the same person.

Love interests come and go, but that expensive top you let them borrow was brand new, so they better return it ASAP.

12. No one will encourage you to undergo a major makeover.

As it is, you can’t even afford a new brush set, let alone for a whole team to glamify you like Agent Hart in Miss Congeniality.

13. Because come on, you have better things to do than to obsess about your appearance.

No shade Princess Diaries, but Mia Thermopolis would’ve become the queen of Genovia with or without frizzy hair, thank you very much.

14. The movies don't acknowledge all the struggles you experience, especially when it comes to your mental health.

As if you’ve made it this far in adulthood without coming to terms with factors that affect your emotional and mental well-being.

15. They oftentimes fail to address—or completely glaze over—racism, sexism, misogyny, xenophobia…

The list, and your annoyance, goes on and on.

16. Yet every single melodramatic problem that arises ends up getting resolved.

Whereas for you, new problems pop up and grow like bad pimples every day!

17. Some “issues” are so far-fetched, like being loved by two people at once.

Meanwhile you can’t even get your cat to look at you most days.

18. You're also less likely to get caught stalking a crush IRL than you are through social media.

Thanks to Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram you can track their whereabouts and gaze at their face without ever leaving your house!

19. Kissing isn't always a perfect affair; it can get super awkward and sloppy.

Meanwhile you kiss people that treat your mouth like it’s an oxygen tank and they’re running out of air.

20. When it comes to sex, it rarely ends in mutual relief and pleasure.

Meanwhile the only things that can successfully arouse and satisfy you are chicken nuggets.

21. Not every person you kiss or have sex with is going to want to date you, and vice versa.

22. And no one, at any point in timerandomly breaks out in song for no reason.

Unless Beyoncé’s lastest hit comes on in a store, because when it comes to Queen Bey, you can’t not jam out in public.

23. On that note, sad music won't play when you feel like crap.

Otherwise it would just be on a constant loop, especially when winter break ends.

24. It takes more than the length of a single pop song to clean your room.

This is by far the most unrealistic thing of all.

25. And there’s no way in hell you’d ever leave an elaborate meal untouched.

How do these fictional characters have the audacity to eat only a few bites of a pancake, when they could eat the entire stack?

26. Let’s be real: your life is more like a horror movie than a romantic comedy.

Cue the screams and gasps instead of the “heartwarming” laughs.

27. But even if it isn’t as pleasant, romantic or dramatic—at least it’s never boring.

And you’ve got friends and family to watch you grow and help you through it all, every step of the way.

Here's a Video of Beyoncé & Jay-Z Doing the Electric Slide, Because Christmas Just Came Early

Though it doesn't seem like it about 90 percent of the time, it turns out that yes, Beyoncé is in fact just like us — and we now have video evidence of this fact.

In a video posted by none other than the Queen's mother, Tina Knowles Lawson, herself, Beyoncé and Jay-Z can be seen doing the electric slide at a kid's birthday (possibly a friend of Blue Ivy's?) and it is EVERYTHING. The video has (for some reason) since been deleted from Tina's Instagram— but not before others managed to get ahold of this gem and make sure other Beyoncé fans knew it existed.

I love so many things about this video, I'm not sure I can pick just one. The way Bey somehow manages to dance ~flawlessly~ in four inch-plus stilettos? How Jay-Z gets super into it by tossing his hands in the air? The fact that we can now see where Beyoncé inherited her dance skills, at least according to the way Tina kills it on the dance floor? It's all great.

Regardless, this video is the early Christmas present I never knew I needed, and I'm very grateful to whoever preserved it permanently. #Blessed.

One lip color called PMS definitely has our attention. This indulgent brown lip can be described as “moody,” which is so real since all of us have experienced that. The internet is loving this new name too, probably because it reminds us the Rihanna deals with lady troubles and it's relatable AF.

Scott Disick Posted a Video of Sofia Richie Dancing in Her Underwear & the Internet Is Super Grossed Out

There are plenty of relationship moments that are Insta-appropriate. Date night selfie? Cute. A sweet post on your anniversary? Also cute. A video of your S.O. dancing around in his/her underwear? Maybe not so much.

This might be why Scott Disick is getting so much backlash for his latest Instagram story, featuring his girlfriend, 19-year-old Sofia Richie, dancing around his kitchen in a festive sweatshirt and her underwear. To make matters a little more uncomfy, she also happens to be dancing to the song "All Night Long," by her father Lionel Richie.

While that's all well and good (the two are both consenting adults in a consensual relationship, as far as we know), a lot of fans are raising eyebrows at the fact that 34-year-old Disick posted the private moment to his Instagram story, for all of his 20.1 million followers to view. When you also consider Sofia's dad's previous reaction to her relationship with Scott, the whole thing just comes off as a little...cringe-y — and way too personal for Insta.

I mean, to each their own I guess — let's just hope Scott got his girlfriend's permission before sharing the private moment with such a large amount of people.

How I Learned to Move On When They Don't Text Back

$

By Quinn Chao

Getting into a new relationship is always difficult. You’re constantly worried you’ll love more than the other person. You don’t want to text first, but you find yourself doing it anyway. After a while, it starts to feel like you’re the only one putting effort in and you're afraid of coming off as super annoying. Eventually, they stop answering and you’re left wondering what you did wrong. Here’s how to handle getting ghosted by someone you like, as someone who has been through it.

Stop wondering what they’re doing.

It’s very hard in the age of social media to not be invested in this person’s life. You want to know what they’re up to and why they cut you off. That being said, I found it best to stop watching Snapchat stories of him with other girls. I stopped asking his friends what girls he was with and stopped looking at his tagged photos. I was done seeing the “fun” times he was having without me; I realized I won’t get any better by dwelling on the situation. I hit him with that unfollow on Snapchat and focused on me.

It’s okay to be upset.

For weeks I was hurting. Although it may have not been a full-on relationship, it was still someone I cared for who just abandoned me. I sulked and cried and let myself feel these emotions. It is important to not repress your feelings because then it’ll just build up inside you. Get a bowl of ice cream, watch sad movies and vent to your friends. Just make sure that you eventually get back to real life after all that self-care.

It’ll take time.

If you don’t feel better after a couple days, it’s natural. No one gets over someone they care about within 72 hours. My friends thought I was being dramatic, but it took me three weeks to stop thinking about him––and I learned that’s okay! Everyone goes through different situations and it is fine to take the time to heal that you need to.

Don’t compare them to others.

Every time I met a new person, I would say they weren’t as great as he was, but that was completely untrue. I just was holding myself back instead of letting myself thrive. There were too many good people I let slip through my fingers because they weren’t “him.” In the end, I came to the conclusion that no one was going to be him, so either I end up lonely and upset or let myself learn to accept what I cannot change. No one is the same as anyone and you’re never going to come across the same person twice.

Don’t blame yourself.

Too often I’m left searching for what I did. However, I did nothing wrong. Putting in effort to have a conversation with someone is how a relationshipshould work, and if the person on the other side doesn’t agree, it’s not your fault! I could go back in time and figure out what went wrong and change it, but he still would leave. These things happen to teach us lessons. Trust me, you did nothing by being yourself and caring, and anyone you're interested in should be able to see that and respect it.

They don't deserve you.

If we look at the other end of this situation, there is the person who never texted you back. They never gave you a reason or even an excuse, they just stopped talking to you. These people are the worst. The most someone could do before they decide to never speak to you again is to explain why. But, they don't have the decency to just be nice––instead they leave you wondering for an explanation. You're never obligated to settle for someone who can't go out of their way to think about your feelings.

And you deserve better.

There are so many great (and better) people are out there for you. Don’t let this one person ruin all your faith in love. You are so much stronger because of this and now you are ready to face relationships with a fresh outlook. You got this!

7 Holiday Foods That Are Surprisingly Good For You

$

‘Tis the season for endless cookies and delicious sweets! We know it can be difficult to resist these yummy temptations, and we totally think it’s okay to indulge once in awhile. That being said, eating healthy during the holidays is easier than you might think! We’re here to share helpful tips and food ideas to keep you on the right track during this magical season.

We spoke with dietitian Joanne Larsen and she shared her top seven holiday foods that are actually good for you. “These are best in moderation, 1 average size serving,” Larsen says. Check them out below and be sure to read her expert advice as to why they’re healthy options!

1. Butter

Who doesn’t love butter? It always adds a bit of yumminess to your foods of choice, so you could say we were excited to learn it’s possibly good for us. “New research on butter shows that the fats in butter may be healthier than margarine because margarine contains partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated vegetable oils that contribute to heart disease because they may contain trans fats,” Larsen explains. Remember, moderation is key.

2. Eggnog

This classic drink is a must at almost every holiday party. And there’s always that one aunt who insists on making it spiked -- yes, please. Larsen explains, “Eggnog is basically egg + milk with some sugar and nutmeg sprinkled on top. Egg and milk are nature's two most perfect foods in nutrient composition.” Who knew nature had “perfect foods?” Larsen suggests sticking with 5 ounces of eggnog with or without alcohol.

3. Turkey Stuffing

Every family makes their stuffing in a unique way, but this one sounds especially delicious. “Bread, veggies (celery & onion) and butter flavored with chicken broth and seasonings is like eating buttered bread.” Larsen continues, “Don't go overboard! It’s best if the stuffing is made from whole grain bread to get your B vitamins, too.” Sounds easy enough. If you’re lucky enough to help make dinner for your family, give this a try!

RELATED: 5 Foods You Should Eat Mindfully

4. Candied Sweet Potatoes

“Yummy!” Larsen says. “These are another vegetable serving, often cooked in brown sugar and butter, but a good source of nutrients.” Did you know sweet potatoes are actually yams? They may not be as healthy as carrots, especially once we smother them in butter, but they have plenty of nutrients when cooked!

5. Green Bean Casserole

Another traditional holiday dish, green bean casserole seems to be a go-to for many families. “Make this with green beans, mushroom soup and fried mushrooms on top,” Larsen suggests. “You get two veggies and mushrooms are high in selenium, a mineral.” It may not have the fried onions on top, which some argue is the best part, but it sounds just as tasty nonetheless!

6. Latkes

“These are fried potato pancakes for Hanukkah, often served with sour cream (lower in fat per teaspoon than butter) and/or applesauce,” Larsen explains. Anything with the word “fried” in it has our attention. And dipping these in applesauce? Yes, please. Larsen continues, “Did you know that 10 pounds of potatoes cooked in milk and served with cabbage have 100 percent of your RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance)? OK you aren't going to eat that many potatoes!”  For all you potato lovers out there, challenge accepted.

7. Pie

The beautiful thing about pies is there are so many to choose from! Larsen suggests, “Pumpkin or pecan pie (in moderation which would be 1/8 slice of pie once a week).” Two of our favorite kinds for sure. Larsen continues, “Pumpkin is a vegetable like sweet potatoes while pecans contain antioxidants that prevent free radical damage to your body.” Who knew! Be sure not to pass on the pie this year, it’s doing more for your body than you think.

Aside from specific foods, we also wanted to give you a cheat sheet for this holiday season when it comes to choosing healthier options! Nevine Duncan, a Nutrition Coach at Powerhouse Gym, shares her “choose this over that” food ideas to make navigating dinner options even easier:

Choose this over that:

  • Poultry over ham
  • Salads over casseroles
  • Red wine over eggnog
  • Baked fruit desserts over pie
  • Veggies with gravy over stuffing

Red wine over eggnog? We can definitely get on board with that. Duncan also recommends, "Drinking a glass of water between drinks to keep you hydrated, full, and keep the hangovers away.” This advice can definitely be used past the holidays, too.

At the end of the day, no matter where you are or who you’re with, remember to be thankful for all that you have as we welcome this holiday season with open arms. Cheers to healthy eating and genuine times!

Five-year-old TyLon Pittman was watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas when he grabbed the phone and called 911 to report that the Grinch was going to steal Christmas, The Independent reports.

“I just want to tell you something. Watch for that little Grinch. Because the Grinch is gonna steal Christmas, OK?” Pittman told the 911 dispatcher. According to The Independent, the dispatcher then asked if there was anyone home, and Pittman’s father apologized for his son calling the police.

After Pittman told his mother and older brother, who were out at the time, that he called the police, Pittman’s older brother, TeDera Dwayne Graves II, said that the mother dismissed it.

“My mom said, 'Boy, whatever. You better not have.' We just didn't pay him any attention,” Graves told Good Housekeeping.

But to the family's surprise, the police came knocking on the door about an hour later.

“I cracked the door and saw the uniform and she explained to me, 'I'm looking for a little boy who was watching The Grinch?'” Graves said, according to The Independent. “We called him out and he explained to her what happened.”

Officer Lauren Develle, the officer who responded to the call, assured the young boy that the Grinch would not be stealing Christmas, Good Housekeeping reports. When asked what he would do if he saw the Grinch, Pittman said that he would “take him to jail.”

The police, however, went a step further and invited Pittman and his family to the Byram, Mississippi Police Station on Monday, where he was surprised with a tour and told that the police had caught the Grinch, Good Housekeeping reports. The police then instructed Pittman to lock the Grinch up.

“Christmas is Safe!!! Someone was camera shy but I'm sure his childhood has been made!” Graves wrote on Facebook.

After the Grinch apologized and promised to not steal Christmas, according to Good Housekeeping Pittman let him out of his cell, and the Grinch commended Pittman on his courage and bravery.

When asked about the whole incident, the family thought it was quite funny, The Independent reports. “We thought it was funny, we were shocked he actually did it,” Graves said. “But we had a talk with him about when it's OK to call 911.”

26 Signs Your Siblings Have Actually Become Your Children

Forget the mom of the friend group. Sometimes you find yourself acting like the actual mom of your siblings. Driving them around? Teaching them how to do life? Critiquing their manners? It's a big task, but someone's got to be the big sister/mom. These are 26 signs your siblings have actually become your children.

1. You drive them everywhere.

In a minivan, of course.

2. You try to give them advice they don't want.

Listen, bud…

3. You tell them the honest truth about life.

Even if they don't want to hear it.

4. You told them not to do something, and they did it anyway.

Don't. Touch. The. Boat.

5. You somehow end up cleaning their messes.

Why did you do this?

6. You're always on hair duty.

Homecoming, anyone?

7. You correct their bad habits.

Don't bite your nails!

8. You have the honor of teaching them about fashion.

Put that away!

9. And you teach your little bros about women.

Let's talk about how to be a gentleman and treat your girlfriend like Beyoncé.

10. You're basically a glorified (unpaid) babysitter.

It's worth it though.

11. But you feel super proud when you watch their recitals and see their report cards.

*sheds a tear*

12. Your siblings ask you really weird questions.

Do I have to answer this?

13. Let's face it, you're like a soccer mom.

14. You help them with their math homework…

If you can even remember how to do algebra.

15. …and then with college applications.

Because parents are useless.

16. You find yourself being the comforter more often than the comfortee.

But nothing is better than a sibling hug.

17. You try to impress your siblings' friends.

It's hard to top the lives of 14-year-olds nowadays, though.

18. Your siblings embarrass you in public.

After all, you trained these kids.

19. You relate more to Lorelai than Rory.

20. This is your life motto:

21. You didn't cause mischief together.

You're not as close as Monica and Ross, apparently.

22. Sometimes you're a little too critical of them…

This is when you go into full mom mode.

23. …and get disappointed when they let you down.

How could they do this?!

24. You actually GOT the jokes in Bad Moms

Can this be me?!

25. You also need a break from your siblings once in a while.

A girl can dream.

26. But you love them like they're your own kids.

Why You Should Stay Active in Your Sorority After College

There are many sad things about graduating college, but for sorority women, one of the worst may be the prospect of leaving your sisters—and all of your incredible accomplishments—behind. Did you know that you don’t have to? Even after graduating, there are ways that you can stay involved in your sorority, be it your chapter, your region or even nationally. From social or networking gatherings to advocacy to advisement opportunities to leadership positions, staying involved with your sorority is a great way to maintain lifelong relationships, network and spread some good throughout the world.

After all of the effort you put into sorority recruitment, learning what each chapter stood for, where they volunteered and which one was your best fit, why wouldn’t you continue the relationship? If you approach it the right way, you’re not just joining a chapter. You’re joining a giant community, built to last you a lifetime.

Networking and Maintaining Ties

After graduating, chances are you and thousands of others will be on the hunt for a job. This could be your first, most immediately helpful reason to remain involved with your sorority. One of your current or former sorority members may know someone that has a job you could be perfect for.

Skylar Scöfield, an alumna of Alpha Gamma Delta’s chapter at Georgia Tech, chose her chapter because of their wide involvement across campus through things like SGA and business fraternities with a wide variety of majors. She is still involved with the sorority. “We send out any job opportunities from our current companies to the Alpha Gam alumna correspondent,” she says. “She’ll forward them to the whole chapter so that they all have first-dibs on job opportunities.” If you happen to be on the market for a new job and have your name on the list, you’ll receive job opportunities from your sisters.

These opportunities are one of the reasons Gabby Leon, former Director of Alumnae Engagement for Phi Mu Fraternity and current Volunteer Director of Special Events at Coalition for Collegiate Women’s Leadership, stays active in Phi Mu, which she joined at the University of Florida. “I can move to any city and look up an alumnae organization, whether for my specific chapter or Panhellenic, which encompasses multiple sororities, and I can immediately be involved, meeting up with other members and giving back to an organization that gave me so much when I was in college.”

Taylor Lack pledged Tri Delta at Southern Methodist University, and was alumnae chapter president with the New York City alumnae chapter for a term before moving to Boston where she is now a member of the Boston Tri Delta alumnae chapter. When she first moved to New York, and then to Boston, the first thing she did was connect with the Tri Delta alumnae chapters. “I didn’t really know anybody when I moved, and connecting with the alumnae chapters allowed me to meet people that I had something in common with!” she says.

Aside from regular meetings, they also hold specialized events. A New Year New You networking event they hosted in January brought women from different career paths in to discuss how to better their job prospects. “Sometimes we host events like this on our own, and sometimes we pair with other fraternity or sorority organizations, and depending on the need, they could be socially or career focused,” Taylor says. “Whether or not it’s strictly a networking event, you’re inevitably always networking.” The larger the event and the more people with different backgrounds that attend, the more connections you’ll make.

The events that you’ll have the opportunity to attend depend on the demographics of your alumnae chapter. Some skew heavily on the older side, and they host get-togethers like gardening or knitting clubs. Others have regular book clubs or happy hours, seasonal events like wine tastings or beach trips. The NYC Tri Delta alumnae chapter is very active, with many younger members, and they host around 40 events a year.

In taking part with national organization meetings, you’ll forge even more relationships than you did while in college, creating a vast network of individuals that hold similar values and work ethics. The more people you meet, the more chances you’ll have for somebody to say, “Hey, I know the perfect person!” about you for job openings, interviews, and presentations.

Remaining involved with alumnae chapters, whether it is based on your geographic region or with your college, offers countless opportunities to meet women from all over that share your passions and values. Staying connected with your chapter offers you the chance to stay connected to your sisters and roots, but spreading out after graduation through your chapter’s national organization or the NPC will allow you all to continue growing even after college.

Philanthropy

One of the considerations you may have made when going through sorority recruitment is which organization they supported philanthropically. You may have made a list, searching for the one that best fit with the values you stand for and the causes you support. Even after you graduate, there are plenty of ways you can volunteer with the national philanthropy of your organization, and remain aligned with those causes you carefully chose, or with the women that are members of your organization. Many plan days of service or volunteer trips, which alumna are always welcome to participate in!

For example, every fall Tri Delta holds a walk/run to end childhood cancer for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. College and alumnae chapters can sign up and participate. The New York Alumnae chapter hosts A Stars and Crescent Evening for St. Jude each year, a charity event with auctions, dancing, food and more where everything is donated. They hosted smaller events throughout the year, as well, such as fitness classes or happy hours where the ticket proceeds went to St. Jude’s. “I’ve also seen chapters do events where they’ll read to kids, or do something like a cookie exchange,” Taylor Lack says. “It all just depends on the chapter.”

No matter what sorority you pledged, or what region your alumnae chapter is located in, there are countless opportunities to give back with them.

Advocacy

The National Panhellenic Conference is made up of 26 individual organizations, and offers guidance on multiple issues that affect sorority life both in college and post-grad. Representatives have been invited to the White House to participate in conversations about women’s education, and NPC is the leading advocacy group for college women. Staying active in the community after graduation affords you the opportunity and platform to be vocal about issues that affect the community of women, and offers opportunities to become an advocate, educating those who are unfamiliar with or ignorant to those issues.

“Representatives from Tri Delta have been on Capitol Hill for the past two-plus years,” Lack says. “They discuss Greek life from the sorority/fraternity point of view, and advocate for how it contributes to both college and alumni life.”

Many people who were never a part of Greek life don’t understand what it can do for a person, and this is a great way to help them see how beneficial it can be, even after graduating.

Further Education or Support

Being an alumna of a sorority can be of great assistance to you if you intend to further your education. Individual sororities often maintain scholarship funds, and national organizations like the NPC offer scholarships as well. Depending on your organization, scholarships could be state or even chapter specific, or open to members across the country, and are offered to undergraduate and graduate students.

Tri Delta specifically has a scholarship fund which raises money for further education, as well as for moments in life when a woman has hit a rough patch. “For example, if you’re a single mother and you’re diagnosed with something like cancer, you could apply for funding from Tri Delta,” Lack says. “So not only is there a wonderful social, personable support system, but there’s a financial support system if it is needed.”

Advising

By remaining involved in your sorority as you grow older, you can be there to help out the women who are now in a position that you were once in.

“When I graduated, I wanted to make sure I gave back because you can be very active as alumna,” Skylar says. Her sorority holds resume critique workshops, where alumnae go in and advise undergraduate chapter members on the best way to organize their resume and promote themselves in order to get the job they deserve. They also aid during recruitment, answering questions for women going through recruitment, helping them make sure they’re making the right decisions and helping out behind the scenes so that nobody has to worry about anything.

Leadership

Another reason that Gabby Leon stays active is to continue the development of her leadership skills. Her current organization, Coalition for Collegiate Women’s Leadership, hosts a three-day leadership conference providing attendees leadership development opportunities and shared learning experiences to college women. The conference will take place in Atlanta from March 30 to April 1, 2017. There are many similar organizations throughout the country that afford similar leadership and training opportunities to the women that stay involved.

There are also leadership roles that you can hold within your organization, be it locally or nationally. National and regional organizations are built on volunteers, with high positions like national officers or national president, which Leon says is the highest honor that can be bestowed on you as an alumna!

Undergraduate chapters have alumnae advisor positions available to assist them. Skylar hopes to hold a position in the future, where she could be an advisor to the president, alumnae relations or parent relations, to name a few. “Alumnae help the undergraduate women stay focused on the goals and values of the sorority, we’re there for any support when they are stressed or struggling, and we’re there to help them and their chapter succeed!” she says.

If you were never involved in a sorority, you almost definitely were unaware of all of the opportunities that are available with your sorority even after you graduated. Even if you were in a sorority, you may have been unaware. But between your initiating chapter, regional organizations, and the national level, there are tons of ways you can give back to your sorority, and that it can continue to give to you. By attending meetings and events, you create a network of connections that can benefit your career and forge friendships wherever you go. You can grow in your alumnae chapters to hold leadership positions, helping to shape the future of your organization. You can participate in philanthropic ventures and educate the masses about the benefits of Greek life and, if you ever find yourself in a time of need, your sorority will be there to help you, too.

“Staying involved helps keep you connected to something that benefited you so much in college and allows it to continue to benefit you, no matter what stage of life you’re in,” Lack says. “I continue to donate to Tri Delta because we have an awesome fund for women on all walks of life, and I’ve seen what it’s done for me and so many other people. I think that applies to other Greek organizations as well. It’s a gift that keeps on giving, and it’s important to make sure something you pledged to continues to keep growing, and not dissipate.”

17 Signs You're So Over Online Dating

$

You know people in real life who have successfully found a partner through dating apps or websites. After some hesitation, you decided to download Tinder, Bumble and anything else you could get your hands on thinking, "Why not?" Well… Now, tbh you're ~the most~ over online dating, and you can think of several reasons why.

1. You regularly delete the apps because you tell yourself you enjoy being single.

Psh, who needs them?! Besides, by deleting the apps, you have more space on your phone for photos of your dog.

2. But every so often, the single life feels kind of boring.

When you're bored, you make the mistake of downloading the apps again.

3. But you're frustrated by the surface-level interactions.

Like, these people only saw your photos and MAYBE read your one-sentence bio. They'll never understand you.

4. So when one of your matches suggests that he finds you cool or interesting, you quickly call him out.

How could he like you based on a few text messages?! Not possible.

5. You also feel hesitant to reveal personal information to these random people on your phone screen.

Why does this guy think he needs to know where you go to college or what you do in your free time?

6. When someone tries to start sexting, you act like you don't know what he's talking about.

Send a pic? OKAY. *sends random photo of the sunset*

7. You have no tolerance for "come over" messages anymore.

Tinder match: "I'm coming over." You: "I didn't invite you."

8. So you have an endless list of not-so-great excuses for when people want to meet up.

You honestly don't even know why you're using these dating apps anymore.

9. When a match asks you what you're using the app for, you don't have a good answer.

You honestly have no idea.

10. You know that online dating works for some people.

Several friends of yours successfully met people online.

11. And that just confuses you even more.

What are you doing wrong?!

12. You just keep matching with people who you are not compatible with in any way.

Someone make it stop.

13. Yet they're so persistent.

No, you don't want to hang out. Was that not clear the three other times you said it?

14. You spend a lot of time swiping—left, that is.

You know those people who furiously swipe right on pretty much everyone? Yeah, you're basically the opposite of that.

15. You try to be witty, but all of your matches still just say "Hey" or "What's up?"

Why do you even try anymore?

16. Feeling hopeless, you try other methods of engaging in conversation.

And you fail, of course.

17. You're not sure you'll ever understand.

Maybe it's time to give up on online dating.
