Beyoncé's Mom Tina Knowles-Lawson Says Sir Already Looks Just Like Jay-Z

We're bummed that we've only gotten to see one glimpse of Beyoncé's twins, Sir and Rumi Carter, since they were born back in June — but no worries, because Beyoncé's mom Tina Knowles-Lawson is here to tell us everything we need to know about how the 7-month-old twins are doing. (And which family member they look most like!)

Over the weekend, Knowles-Lawson told Us Weekly that, while she doesn't see herself in either of her two new grandchildren (yet!), Sir already looks like a tiny, mini Jay-Z.

"The boy has a stare, like a mean mug, like Jay sometimes, which is so cute," she said. "And the girl, she’s just so happy all the time and so sweet. They are just adorable!"

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on

I totally understand that the Carters are trying to keep photos of their fam under wraps while Sir and Rumi are young, but I am also now dying for photographic proof of this aforementioned "mean mug." Meanwhile, while we wait for 2018 to (hopefully) bless us with more photos of the twins, we can take comfort in the fact that Jay-Z totally agrees with Tina — because, according to a previous interview with Vanity Fair, it sounds like Sir's adorable attitude was actually what earned him his name.

"Sir was like, man, come out the gate," the rapper told Vanity Fair in August. "He carries himself like that. He just came out, like, Sir.

So there you have it — if this isn't proof that Sir inherited the badass gene, I'm not sure what is.

Trump Has Dropped Climate Change From the List of National Security Threats

On Monday, as part of the release of the White House's 56-page National Security Strategy report, President Trump eliminated climate change from his administration's list of threats to U.S. national security, the Huffington Post reports.

Trump's stance not only breaks with two decades of military planning, but it also contradicts what many top military commanders and members of his own cabinet have previously said on the matter. In the report itself, there is only one reference to climate change, in which it says that the United States should focus on becoming a global energy powerhouse through the production and exportation of fossil fuels, which contribute to global warming,. (Oh the irony.)

In his speech on Monday that followed the release of the document, Trump's only mention of climate change was the United States's withdrawal from, "the very expensive and unfair Paris climate accord."

Defense Secretary James Mattis is one of several members of the president's cabinet whose views on climate change are directly contradicted by the report. "The effects of a changing climate — such as increased maritime access to the Arctic, rising sea levels, desertification, among others — impact our security situation,"USA Today reports Mattis told senators during his confirmation hearing. Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer said in his confirmation hearing that he was aware of the ways in which climate change had contributed to rising sea levels and increased storms.

Meanwhile, Trump's decision to drop climate change from the list of national security concerns follows a year of extreme wildfires in California, and hurricanes in Puerto Rico, Texas and Florida — many of which have been linked to the effects of climate change.

This Man Used Netflix to Propose to His Girlfriend & TBH It's the Ultimate Relationship Goals

You may think you and your S.O. love Netflix. You may have even binge-watched both seasons of Stranger Things in one weekend all while basically not leaving the couch for 48 hours straight. (Not that I know from personal experience or anything.) But chances are, you probably don't love Netflix as much as this couple, who just used it to get engaged.

Let me explain: Conor, who, like many other people in relationships, spends a lot of time watching Netflix with his girlfriend Kamela, wanted to find a way to incorporate the streaming platform into his proposal to ask Kamela to marry him. So, he contacted Netflix (you know, as one does), and asked them to help.

Here's how he pulled it off: Netflix told Kamela that she and Conor were being filmed for a reality series about couples' binge-watching habits. Little did she know, when she went to watch her fave show, The Santa Clarita Diet, Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant had actually filmed a special video just for the proposal. Suddenly, in the video, Conor appears to say he has a question for Kamela — and this is where she finally gets the idea that something's up.

Finally, IRL Conor turns to Kamela to adorably say, "It's been awesome being your boyfriend, but if you're cool with it, I'd rather be your husband." From there, well, let's just say there are a whole lot of happy tears, so you're probably just going to want to watch it all go down for yourself in the video above.

BRB, I'll just be over here ugly-crying to a total stranger's marriage proposal if you need me.

How To Handle Feelings Of Loneliness When You're Single

0
0

Chances are you're probably going to be single at some point in your life. Maybe it will be ten years from now. Maybe it will be tomorrow. Or maybe you’ve been single your whole life! And while being single has its perks (read: you get to do what you want, when you want), sometimes feelings of loneliness can creep in. We’re all vulnerable to these feelings, especially in today’s hyper-connected world, so what can you do to keep the loneliness at bay?

The first step is to identify where these feelings of loneliness are coming from. According to filmmaker and founder/executive director of MediaGirls, Michelle Cove, loneliness is simply part of the human experience. As normal as this is, Cove points out that there is “a shame or a stigma attached to it.” While we all at some point feel lonely, we very rarely tell our friends and family, “Hey, I’m feeling a little lonely right now.”

These feelings of loneliness are surprisingly not exclusive to those who are single; those in relationships can feel lonely too! Cove says the biggest mistake single people can make is thinking that those in relationships are not lonely. “[Loneliness] comes to everyone and is not the enemy," she says. So, next time you see a couple, don’t assume that they aren’t feeling the same way as you.

Even though we all feel lonely at times, some of us do feel much lonelier than others. But what’s the biggest reason for this? Cove says that social media is a big factor. When you are scrolling through your Instagram feed and see all of your coupled friends sharing anniversary posts, or even your single friends traveling the world, the feelings of loneliness can ramp up again. So how can you handle this? One of the best solutions is to just sit with your feelings. “[One solution is to] just sit with it, don’t dwell, but feel it and see if it will move through you," she says. If the feelings are still present after a while, try to spend some time with people who are genuine and authentic; they can help you feel better.

Zoe Hawryluk, a junior at Boston University, seconds this advice. “I’ve learned to find and seek mental and emotional fulfillment from my close friends rather than from a significant other,” Zoe says. It can be very cathartic to sit a share your feelings with close friends! If you’re not up for socializing, Cove says watching your favorite comedy (and laughing along) on Netflix can also be a great way to cope! However, it is important to consider how often you are experiencing these feelings. If your feelings of loneliness are chronic, and you feel like you can’t move past them, it could be worthwhile to find a professional to talk to, to get to the cause of your feelings.

So, if you are single, and have accepted that loneliness is a part of life, what do you have to look forward to? According to Stephanie Murray, a junior at the Savannah College of Art and Design, being single is a great way to learn more about yourself. “Sometimes [being single]’s full of exotic adventures and finding new hobbies you never thought you’d like,” she says. “I believe everyone should have a period of extended singleness or loneliness, so they can evaluate themselves and make mental notes of what they want from a partner and what they offer as a partner.” Being single means you only have to accommodate your schedule, which means you can go to that yoga class you love or attend an author event at your favorite local bookstore, without having to worry about pleasing anyone else. You’ll learn new things about what you like and don’t like, and, if other people attend the event, you may even make some new friends!

Zoe also says that one of the benefits of being single is all of the extra resources you have: “You have more time and money to treat yourself and to spend time with the people who truly love you and would never leave you.” Being single is a great excuse to treat yourself and your closest friends to a fancy dinner or a movie night!

One of the most important things for people – especially those in relationships – to remember is not to pity those who are single. Sometimes, people make a conscious choice to be single. Whether they are avoiding relationships because they are too busy or need some time to themselves after a rough relationship, there is no reason to pity someone who is single.

Sabrina Araullo, a senior at Montclair State University, thinks that being single is a time for personal growth that will only make you stronger in the future. “Being in a relationship should not, by any means, be your target end destination,” Sabrina says. “However, when the right time comes for you to be in a relationship, you'll be able to approach it in a way that sees both you and your significant other as, not completing each other or defining who you are, but complimenting each other and allowing yourself to experience a new type of personal growth.” So, single ladies, embrace the time you have to yourself, it will only make you stronger!

What should you take away? First, there is nothing wrong with being lonely. Our society tries to stigmatize these feelings of loneliness, when we should be normalizing them. Don’t feel ashamed of being single or feeling lonely. Go to the movies solo. Bring a book and go to a fancy restaurant by yourself.  Loneliness and being single is a great way to learn about yourself, and become the best possible version of you!

6 Ways to be Chic & Cozy AF at the Same Time

Cold weather makes us want to curl up in a blanket ball with an infinite mug of hot cocoa, but unfortunately, the real world awaits us, even in the winter. And also unfortunately, the real world usually requires real clothes, as in something other than boyfriend sweatpants or patterned PJs. Sometimes getting dressed in the winter seems like a choice between being warm or looking cute, but don’t let winter give you an ultimatum. With the right approach, you can do both.

1. Fleece-lined leggings

Basically, every girl already owns a pair of basic leggings, but we’re all kidding ourselves if we think they will keep us warm enough in the winter. Ideally, we wouldn’t need to buy yet another pair, but once you try on some fleece-lined leggings you will understand. Cozy and versatile, they’re perfect for that trying-to-look-like-you’re-not-trying-look, or even literally not trying at all. We don’t judge.

2. Blanket scarves

When an outfit involves the word “blanket,” you know you will be warm AF. You can style blanket scarves about 100 different ways too, so they work with a variety of outfits. You can dress up sweatshirts and leggings or dress down a cute dress and tights. If somehow you still feel cold you could always just use it as an actual blanket.

3. Robe coats

We applaud whoever decided to make robes into socially acceptable outerwear. True genius. They're comfortable and easy to throw on over anything, just like a robe, but trendy and chic, like a good coat. Then all you really need are great shoes for a fab outfit. Plus, the wide array of different kinds of robe coats makes it easy to tailor to your own personal style. You can choose the edgy oversize trend or opt for a more classy camel pick, like this one from River Island.

4. Chic snow boots

Feel free to wear your Uggs until the day you die, but anyone who has experienced a harsh winter knows they just do not cut it in in the more frigid temps and are slippery when you cross an icy campus. For those going to school up North, or any collegiette who likes to keep her toes extra toasty, you will want to find a nice pair of snow boots, but not the clunky, hideous ones from your childhood. Don’t worry—these leather ones from Sorel prove you can still be chic in the snow.

5. Snuggly socks

A nice pair of wool or thermal socks easily make your outfit cuter and your feet warmer. Wearing socks that barely peek up from behind your boots subtly changes an ensemble, adding just a touch of cute pattern or color. For a bolder look, go with over the knee socks over leggings or tights.

6. Layering outerwear

Sometimes one jacket just isn’t enough. Plus guys double up on outerwear all the time, and anything guys can do girls can do better, right? As an eternally cold human being, I frequently wear layers of sweatshirts, jackets and coats. To avoid looking like a marshmallow though, you have to pick your layers carefully. An unbuttoned flannel under a jacket under a coat looks pretty good, or of course, you could go with the classic sweatshirt under vest combo. The oversized coat trend mentioned earlier works nicely with this trend too, since it can fit over just about anything.

While some people choose to give into the cold and misery of winter, you’re better than that. Nothing can stop you from being your fine, stylish self—unless you’re snowed in. Then by all means, keep your PJs on. We’re not unreasonable, after all.

HC Wake-Up Call: Trump Judicial Nominee Withdraws, 3 Are Dead After Train Derails & Multiple U.S. Regions Will Likely Get a White Christmas This Year

0

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Trump's Judicial Nominee Has Withdrawn After Being Unable to Answer Basic Questions About Law

Matthew Peterson, President Trump's nominee for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, withdrew from consideration after a video of his confirmation hearing went viral, in which he was unable to answer basic questions about law and courtroom proceedings, CNN reports. In a super painful-to-watch exchange between Peterson and Senator John Kennedy, the nominee acknowledges that he has never argued a motion in federal or state court and isn't familiar with the details of the federal rules of civil and criminal procedure — making him a less-than-ideal choice for a judgeship.

At Least 3 Are Dead After a Train Derailed Over an Interstate in Washington

According to BuzzFeed News, at least three people are dead and over 100 more have been taken to hospitals after an Amtrak train derailed over an interstate in Tacoma, Washington on Monday morning. Multiple passengers and crew members aboard the train, as well as drivers on the interstate below, were injured. While the company has not yet said what it believes caused the crash, an investigation is ongoing.

Multiple Places in the U.S. Will Likely Have a White Christmas This Year

According to reports by The Weather Channel, multiple areas in the northwestern and northeastern United States will "likely" have at least one inch of snow on the ground on Christmas morning, and it's possible that even areas in the midwest and south could also see some snow. On average, around 38% of the country turns into a winter wonderland on December 25th, and since plenty of snow fell in many areas of the U.S. as early as November, we'll be keeping our fingers crossed.

Selena Gomez's Mom Was Reportedly Hospitalized Following an Argument Over Justin Bieber

It's not really a secret that Selena Gomez's family is less than thrilled about her reunion with ex Justin Bieber — but as it turns out, they may be a lot more upset about it than we thought. Case in point: Selena's mother was reportedly hospitalized last week after the two had an argument over Selena's relationship with Justin.

As TMZ reports, police were called to a Los Angeles hotel sometime last week for a welfare check on Selena's mother, Mandy Teefey. She was later voluntarily transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

While they may or may not be related, sources told TMZ that Teefey's hospitalization followed an argument with her daughter about her recent reunion with Justin. Selena had reportedly just revealed to her mother that she and Justin are currently undergoing couples therapy together, which caused Teefey to realize that the relationship between the on-again-off-again couple was more serious and long-term than she'd thought.

Teefey was later released from the hospital the same day, so hopefully it wasn't anything serious — whatever the situation, we just hope she's okay and that she and Selena can eventually work things out. Teefey is reportedly giving Selena some space to "figure out what she wants," which is a great start.

Dax Shepard Talks About Finding Your Identity in College, & The Possibility of a 'Parenthood' Revival

Parenthood fans know him best as the irresponsible-yet-lovable Crosby Braverman on the NBC drama, while Disney fans know him as the husband of Kristen Bell, who voices Anna in Frozen. Dax Shepard is a comedian, actor, writer and director from Michigan who attended college at UCLA before getting into The Groundlings, a sketch comedy organization in Los Angeles. He recently portrayed Deputy Billy Calhoun in El Camino Christmas, and he's also writing and directing the next Scooby Doo movie. Dax chatted with Her Campus about his relationship advice for college students, his admiration of Justin Hartley and how the cast would be down for a Parenthood revival.

Her Campus: One of your upcoming projects is El Camino Christmas. What drew you to that film?

Dax Shepard: The reason I find the movie so interesting is there's been this whole strata of movies that stopped getting made, I don't know eight years ago, as the film business has shifted into tent pole movies. So there's this great section of movies that I loved growing up—these kind of more quirky drama comedies like Cohen brother-esque movies—that just really don't get made. So now Netflix is this place you can make all these movies, and so El Camino Christmas tapped into that. It's a Christmas movie, but it's also a shoot 'em up at a liquor store movie. And it has a really eclectic cast and kind of a quirky town, so it's a neat opportunity that there's a place now to do those movies again.

HC: What was it like playing a deputy?

DS: Well, you know this was back-to-back cops for me. So, the way I delineated the difference between Jon Baker [in CHIPS] and this guy was I grew a mustache. Hardly recognizable.

HC: You've worked both in comedy and in film. What drew you to those passions?

DS: Well, I got to LA in 1995 on my 20th birthday, and I knew very little about how any of that stuff worked, but I knew that many of the Saturday Night Live cast had come from The Groundlings Theatre in Hollywood. So I auditioned to get into there and went through their program, which there's many levels, it takes years to do, and through that process, they force you to develop characters but then you also write a lot of sketches. So you really strengthen your writing, and then at that time that I was going through there was the first time that video production on a consumer level was possible. So I started making lots of videos that would play at the theater. I was shooting things and editing them, and so I was really learning to actor, write and direct all at the exact same time. When I left there, I still very much had a passion for all three of those things, and I've worked as much as a writer as I have an actor. And then in the last five years, I've been directing a lot, and I love that probably the most of those three things.

HC: What do you love the most about directing?

DS: When you're directing, you make a game plan with a lot of talented people, and then you arrive on set and you learn very quickly that for any number of reasons that game plan is not going to happen. And so you're forced to solve a ton of problems in real time. And I think I'm just someone who is really drawn to problem solving as a hobby. I love trying—I love when I'm working on something on my car and I realize I don't have that part or that screw or that bolt, and I'm going to have to figure out another option. To me, that's like the highlight of working on stuff is when you have to make a different solution than you had originally thought of.

HC: What's your advice for college students who want to get into writing, acting or directing?

DS: I think the main thing I've come to realize is it's not a career path for people who are waiting for their phone to ring. So if you have any one of those interests, it is incumbent upon you to write your down stuff, shoot your own stuff, act in your own stuff. You have to do it by yourself. You won't get a magic agent or meet an executive and become friends. With very few exceptions, surely some people hit the lottery somehow—but in general, there will not be a single person that will hand you any of these things. You will have to do it yourself.

HC: Speaking of advice, you recently gave some relationship advice on Ellen. Do you have any college-specific relationship advice?

DS: Wow, well you know my whole time in college, I was with the girl that I ended up being with for nine years, so you know it's an interesting question. I don't really know what the best advice is. I really like that I waited late to get married and have kids, but I can't speak for everyone on that. I just know that I'm glad that I did all of the regrettable crazy things I did in my twenties, because that's surely the time to do them. There's plenty of time to be grown up and share a mortgage. I think a lot of young people are looking to be in a relationship to kind of cement their own identity, and I just think it's a time to really be cementing your own identity on your own that's not defined by another person.

HC: Now your wife Kristen Bell also has a Christmas movie out with A Bad Moms Christmas. What do you most love about her movie?

DS: To be totally honest, I think I most love Justin Hartley in it. Of course, my wife's my favorite of the girls, but I just thought he was really a breath of fresh air. He made just some of the weirdest, counterintuitive choices as an actor that really cracked me up. And my god, he's gorgeous. What an easy fella to look at.

HC: And of course, it's the holiday season and you've teamed up with Charmin to debut their restrooms in Times Square for holiday shoppers. Why were you interested in that partnership?

DS: It was a very, very easy partnership to say yes to because I myself have been a victim of just a terrible lack of restrooms in Manhattan, and it's such a fun place to come at Christmastime and to walk around and look at the views and the window decorations. And basically if you're traveling here with little kids, which we do often, I challenge you to find a bathroom in Manhattan the doesn't require a hazmat suit. Because your little kids are just so drawn to porcelain; they just want to touch everything in these bathrooms and if you can even find one, odds are it's group zero for every airborne pathogen in the city. So these are actually brick and mortar; they built 14 themed restrooms. And it is a mini sanctuary from shopping. In fact, if you're a dude like me, and you can't stand shopping, you just should go hide in there for like an hour while your family shops. There's a disco tech one. There's an Everest one. There's under the sea. They're inspiring. I would not rule out myself building a disco tech bathroom now after having experienced that.

HC: What are your own plans for the holidays?

DS: I will go home to LA and then we will road trip to Oregon to see my mom and brother for Christmas.

HC: And finally, is there any chance of a Parenthood reunion or revival?

DS: Well no one's called me about it, but I do know that, because I'm still friends with everyone on Parenthood, that every one of us would say yes. So if they ever tried to put that together, I don't think it would be difficult.

6 Things In Your Apartment You Can Definitely Fix Yourself & How To Do It

0
0

One of the first things of adulthood is getting your own place and being able to afford it. Your first apartment is an exciting time; you can do what you want, design and decorate how you want and you finally have privacy. Having your own place means you’re responsible for it—including fixing things that fall apart or break. It’s easy to just hire someone to fix things, but learning how to do it yourself can help you save money while you learn a new skill. Here are six things in your apartment that you can fix yourself.

1. Clogged drains

One of the first things that will frequently be an annoying problem is clogged drains, whether it’s the shower from washing your hair, or the kitchen sink from disposing food. This is an easy fix and there are a few ways to unclog and clean your drains. Make sure to wear appropriate safety gear and have a bucket, cloth and/or sponge available for possible messes.

A pop-up stopper or plunge stick are the most used tools for clearing clogged drains clogged by hair. Chemical drain cleaners are also used as a first result for breaking up the clog in the drain. For deeper problems, try using a plumbing snake by removing the stopper and inserting the cable in the drain. Push and pull the cable to break up the clog. For a more natural cleanser, use a cup baking soda, followed by a cup of vinegar down the drain. Wait 5-10 to follow the mixture with boiling hot water.

2. Holes in the wall

Another easy fix for a common problem in an apartment is sealing holes in drywall. Anything with enough force could create a hole, but with a simple patch kit your wall will look brand new.

Use a self-adhesive mesh patch to cover the hole and in a crisscross pattern using a drywall knife, spread a lightweight joint compound over the mesh patch. Let the first coat dry before adding a second coat on top. After the second layer is dry, sand the wall smooth.

3. Scratches on wood floors

If you’re lucky enough to have wood floors in your apartment, you’ll want to take care of them as much as possible so they continue to look brand new. It’s easy to find scratches on wood floors from moving things around, shoes, etc.

Wipe the area of the scratch(es) with a damp cloth or towel to make sure there is no dirt or debris. Use a stain marker that is the exact color of the wood and run it over the scratch a few times. Use a clean cloth with mineral spirits to rub in the stain from the marker to remove any residue.

4. Smoke detectors

Ever wondered why your smoke detector makes that loud and obnoxious beeping sound? It’s because the battery needs to be replaced and the alarm should be reset.

To change the battery, first turn off the main breaker so there is no electricity running through the smoke detector. Take the detector off its mounting and disconnect the power cable. Remove the battery, press and hold the “Test” button until the alarm goes silent, and place the new battery inside. Reconnect the power cable, place the detector back on the mounting, and turn your breaker back on. Also, if you discover the problem is not with your smoke detector, check your carbon monoxide alarm.

5. Hanging curtains

The fabric of your curtains should fit the mood, aesthetic, and function of the room. For rooms that have multiple or bigger windows, having light color curtains will allow more light. For more privacy, you’ll want a heavier fabric that won’t allow light to come through when closed. When hanging, you’ll want to hang the rod a few inches higher than the window frame; this will create an illusion that the window is taller. Make sure your curtains are full and fall to the floor.

6. Cleaning scorched pots and pans

Scorched pots and pans happen all of the time and everyone has at least one. While some people will just buy new ones, there’s a way you can clean and salvage your cooking ware; you’ll need your baking soda and vinegar again for this fix. Boil water and vinegar in the bottom of the pan, remove from heat, pour out the liquids,  and use baking soda to clean the pan. For more stubborn marks, add more baking soda with a few drops of water.

Remembering how to fix these few things will make staying on your own a little easier and save you money. If you’re a fan of DIY activities, try fixing other things around your apartment. This can also help with getting used to fixing things yourself and knowing what to do when something goes wrong.

A Revival of ‘The Office’ Is in the Works, but There’s a Catch

0
0

One of the biggest trends in television today is reviving a classic TV series that was beloved by all (Gilmore Girls and Will and Grace, anyone?). Some aren't a fan of these revivals, calling for more original programing, but there’s just something comforting about watching your favorite characters in all new episodes. And while we may never get a Friends revival, another NBC classic may be brought back soon.

According to US Weekly, NBC is looking to revive The Office in the 2018-2019 TV season.  The new season, "would be set at Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch and include a mix of new and old cast members."

There is a catch though: Steve Carell will not be returning as lovable goof, Michael Scott, and The Hollywood Reporteris reporting that there is a search underway to find a new actor to step into the role of regional manager.

I'm seriously hoping all of these reports are true. The Will and Grace reboot has been fantastic, and I’m sure a revival of The Office would bring NBC even more viewers and accolades. And honestly, who wouldn't want to see what happened to all of our favorite characters? I would love to see Jim and Pam’s family five years after the finale! And what has Dwight been up to? Are Kelly and Ryan still together? Let’s hope all of these questions are answered if and when The Office returns to NBC.

What My 'Awkward Phase' Taught Me About Beauty

0

By Bri Roselius

Let’s take a stroll down memory lane, shall we? It’s 2010 and a pre-pubescent Bri can be found blasting the Jonas Brothers, bedazzling her diary and applying way too much sparkly gold eyeshadow. It was the era of bottom liner and the notorious “smirk.” I was thriving.

It’s hard to imagine a time without social media at the touch of our fingertips, a time where driving in a foreign part of town required a paper map, and a time where society wasn’t obsessed with body image. Don’t get me wrong, 2010 was in no way the golden age of our generation, and I can assure that you won’t find any history book highlighting the blessed days when Jersey Shore aired on MTV.

Unlike the genetically blessed tweens we begrudgingly see all over social media today, we all had our fair share of "awkward phases." Whether you replicated Avril Lavigne’s emo look, perfected the digital camera mirror selfie or rocked a forearm wrapped in silly bandz, we all experienced the early 2000s boldly and without hesitation. Why is it then, that we cringe when deleting old Facebook photos or joke about how “weird” and “awkward” we were? In retrospect, the early 2000s was the calm before the storm––the quiet period before the massive growth of social media announced its entrance into society. Entering without so much as a knock, social media was immediately deemed the most popular girl in school. The internet suddenly became so accessible that people couldn’t help but become self-obsessed. Teens and tweens began to equate their self-worth based on the number of likes they received. Your own opinion became irrelevant, and instead, a pool of hungry Internet trolls eagerly commented their opinions on what you chose to do with your body.

I won’t deny it, I used to wince looking at scrapbook pages filled with photographs of my tween years. The photographs didn’t reflect what society told me was “beautiful” by today’s standards, so I masked my insecurities with humor while simultaneously tearing myself down in the process. I was 12-years-old.

Today, I am 20-years-old and fighting a perpetual battle between who I want to be and who society tells me to be.

I may not look the same as I did at 12, but I’ve begun to appreciate that period in my life. The clothing I wore, the makeup I donned, and the music I listened to were all activities I genuinely enjoyed. I didn’t allow society or social media dictate who I was. I never felt uncertainty about posting a photo online or felt worried I wouldn’t receive praise on my appearance. Most importantly, I didn’t bear the chains of restriction and self-doubt that burden me and so many other women today.

Call it what you want, but that "awkward phase" I endured was the most freeing period in my life to date. I didn’t always think this way and I’ve only come to terms with it quite recently. Those tween years everyone drags on about taught me what true beauty embodies: liberation. We were kids high on life, more focused on catching the next episode of Lizzie McGuire rather than our like ratio on Instagram.

Believe it or not, we are prisoners bound indefinitely to social media. Until we find self-acceptance within ourselves, we will never break the chains of societal expectations.

Meryl Streep Has Responded to Rose McGowan's Tweet Calling Her a Hypocrite

Since actress Rose McGowan accused disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein of raping her, the discussion of harassment and sexual misconduct has been almost non-stop. And as we approach awards season, the discussion about misconduct and abuse in the entertainment industry is sure to continue.

Last Friday, it was reported that actresses attending the Golden Globes on January 7 would wear black, as a statement against harassment and inequality in Hollywood. After news of this protest broke, McGowan tweeted, "Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @goldenglobes in a silent protest. YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real chance. I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa," she said, referencing the fashion line designed by Weinstein's ex-wife, Georgina Chapman. McGowan later deleted the tweet.

Yesterday, Meryl Streep responded to McGowan’s comments in a statement that read in part, "It hurt to be attacked by Rose McGowan in banner headlines this weekend, but I want to let her know I did not know about Weinstein’s crimes, not in the 90s when he attacked her, or through subsequent decades when he proceeded to attack others."

In her statement, Streep adds that she sent her home phone number to McGowan through mutual friends, with the hopes that she'd call her yesterday. "She did not, but I hope she reads this," Streep's statement reads. "I am truly sorry she sees me as an adversary, because we are both, together with all the women in our business, standing in defiance of the same implacable foe," she adds.

While McGowan has a point that wearing black dresses won’t fix the problem of harassment in Hollywood, a protest like that can draw attention to the issue. And keeping the problem of harassment on everyone’s minds, on a big night like the Golden Globes, can make sure that the concern regarding the problem of sexual harassment doesn't go away. I for one hope that all of the men and women who were hurt by the actions of the powerful get the justice they deserve.

This Nutella Liquid Lipstick Is Here To Save 2017

Lets be honest, 2017 was a weird year. Between heartbreaking celebrity breakups (I’m looking at you, Chris Pratt and Anna Faris), rompers for men and Kendall Jenner’s ill-fated attempt to make it all better with a can of Pepsi, we deserve something for making it through this year. In fact, we deserve something the one thing that will truly make us happy: world peace makeup and food combined.

That's why the Beauty Bakerie has created a set of Nutella-inspired, and, more importantly, smelling line of lipsticks appropriately named Nude-tella

While they may not be edible, it sure is closer to your mouth than your Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette. Beauty Bakerie is selling these delicious lips in their signature “Liquid Lip Whip” formula, and they come in a set of four that retails for $60. The shades included are just as stunning as they are punny.

Nudi-Tea

This shade has gorgeous grey undertones that will make this summery light pink perfect for the winter.

Skinny Dip

This classic nude shade is a must-have in any collection! While you definitely have a million nude lipsticks, you totally don’t have ones that smell like Nutella…

Birthday Suit

This shade has similar undertones to Nudi-Tea, however, it is overall a bit darker.

Bake It Naked

When you think of Nutella, you think of this shade. It looks good enough to eat (but seriously, please don’t).

Is it too late to put this on my Christmas list?

The Disney World Hall of Presidents Trump Has Arrived & There Are Mixed Reviews

After experiencing almost a year of delays, Walt Disney World’s Hall of Presidents opened again Tuesday for the debut of the animatronic version of President Trump that will take its place among the previous 44 presidents in the exhibit, says the Orlando Sentinel. Some visitors in the park Monday night were given the chance to see the new figure then, and the reviews are mixed.

The initial announcement the animatronic figure would be created in the first place raised some mixed reviews of its’ own. Despite it being a tradition that all presidents of the United States receive a figure, some who don’t support Trump thought it would be in poor taste to include him due to controversy, or at least, his voice. A petition urging Disney to not allow Trump’s figure to give the traditional speech its predecessors have reached more than 15,000 votes. However, Disney decided to follow the tradition that every sitting president has recorded a speech for the attraction, starting with Bill Clinton.

The result? A surprisingly presidential speech from the animatronic Trump. Though complete with the customary and frankly ridiculous amount of hand gesturing, there are no “weird asides about. . . building a wall.” The animatronic Trump ends his speech by saying that it “is a privilege to serve as the president of the United States, to stand here among so many great leaders of our past and to work on behalf of the American people.”

Those who are fans of Trump seem to only find a quarrel with the fact that Trump’s infamously long, past-the-buckle tie is not red, but instead striped and blue. Otherwise, they think it looks presidential and just like Trump. They are firmly of the belief that it belongs in the exhibit.

People who dislike Trump in varying degrees have a few more problems with the figure that go beyond its appearance. They, overall, don’t think it’s appropriate that a president who has a tendency to make inappropriate and controversial comments as easily as most people breathe.

Beyond the disapproval of Trump as a figure in general, there are also some qualms about the general appearance of the animatronic. There are quite a few people who have noted it doesn’t really look much like Trump. Some have taken to Twitter to discuss this:

If there’s one true difference (or improvement) between the animatronic Trump and the real one, though, it’s definitely this: The animatronic doesn’t have the ability to tweet.

You HAVE to Watch This Vlogger's Incredible Underwater Makeup Tutorial

Remember 2015? When the internet blew up with makeup-shaming memes about how the best way to see what a woman “truly” looks like is to take her swimming on the first date?

Yeah. The internet of 2017 is still just as immature, but at least they internet clapped back in the funniest way possible––with makeup lovers everywhere not only explaining that the suggestion itself has misogynistic undertones, but that the people suggesting it were idiots for not knowing that waterproof makeup exists.

Beauty gurus, like NikkieTutorials, showed the world that swimming was no match for the power of makeup, demonstrating that even the most “caked” face could withstand the misogyny with the right techniques and products. Bow down.

Recently, Instagram vlogger @meplusfashion took the whole thing one step further, creating a tutorial of makeup that doesn’t just withstand the water, but can be done completely ~in~ the water.

I can barley do my eyebrows after a good night’s sleep, in proper lighting, using name brand products, so to me this is pretty impressive. I’m not the only one who’s floored by this underwater tutorial, as the video has amassed over a million views on Instagram.

I think we may have found the first girl who actually wants to go swimming on the first date––but just don’t expect her to be ready beforehand.

5 Ways to Maintain Your Relationship While Studying Abroad

0
0

If you’ve decided to study abroad, you’re in for the adventure of a lifetime. But if you have an SO, you may be feeling anxious about what’s going to happen to your relationship. Let it be known that staying with your SO while you’re abroad isn’t for everyone. But if you do decide to stay together, there are some things you’ll need to know in order to keep the spark alive when you're apart for a semester or longer. We’ve talked to collegiettes with experience to let you in on ways to maintain your relationship while you’re studying abroad.

1. Define the relationship

Before you leave, it’s absolutely crucial to define the relationship. If you’ve been dating for a while, it’s still important to have a conversation about what your boundaries are and where the two of you stand for the semester (or however long you’re abroad). “My boyfriend and I were together for a really long time before we actually made anything official,” says Lauren*, a junior at the University of Denver. “It wasn’t until a little bit before abroad that I actually brought it up because I didn’t want to leave and have no clue where we stood even though we spent most of our time together.” Lauren and her boyfriend decided to stay together — but it’s okay to take a break too! If you think having an SO is going to hinder your experience, see how they feel about an open relationship or let them know you want to be single while you’re abroad.

2. Make a plan

If you’ve decided you want to stay with your SO, it’s important to establish a plan for when you’ll be able to talk to each other. Are you okay with not talking every day? Would a simple goodnight text do the trick? Especially with time differences, it’s important to make sure you’re on the same page. “Given the time difference (he’s in Colorado and I’m in Sweden, so I am 8 hours ahead), we have a very limited time to talk throughout the day, which is probably the most difficult part because I’m missing out on the majority of his day, and vice versa,” Lauren says. “We try to FaceTime once a week, which is the best time to actually catch up and talk, but I can’t deny that only being able to really talk to him once a week is one of the most annoying things.” Even though Lauren wishes she could talk to her boyfriend more, FaceTiming him once a week gives her a chance to see him and let him know how she’s doing (and vice versa). Nicole Kelly, a senior at Bryant University, also scheduled a time to Skype her boyfriend at least once a week while she was studying abroad in China. "It made it easier to get through the week because we knew that regardless of the time difference and busy schedules, we would always have time dedicated to catching up," she says. Figure out a time that works for both of you, and try to stick to it!

3. Communicate

This may seem like an obvious one, but it’s critical to communicate with your SO and let them know if your feelings are starting to change. “While you do not have to talk every single day, staying open with your partner is important,” says Isabel Calkins, a junior at New York University. “If at any point you are starting to stray from your feelings, you have to be open about it. It will take work to maintain the relationship but as long as you know that where you are is temporary, things are going to be okay if you want them to be.” Keeping an open line of communication will help keep each of you satisfied, as Lauren has experienced. She’ll sometimes “just ask to FaceTime that night or ask him to give me just a little more attention throughout the week,” she says. If you need to scream into a pillow or have a small crying session, that’s okay too. This isn’t something easy!

4. Remember it’s temporary

If you’re having a mini-breakdown or wondering how you could possibly go on like this, remember that it isn’t forever! “I guess there’s no perfect way to handle a long distance relationship during abroad, but I always remind myself that it’s only temporary, and things will be back to the way they were once I return to the states,” Lauren says. With this mindset, you’ll be able to enjoy what you’re doing in the present (which is so important!) and know you have only a few months before you’re back with your SO. It’s definitely a different ball game if you’re overseas, but with hard work, you can get through it.

5. Find a way to stay connected

Even if you're thousands of miles away, you can find ways to stay connected. Mailing letters (so much more romantic than texts!) and care packages will bring a smile to your SO's face and let them know you're thinking about them. It's also a great way to share what you're doing with the other person (send them something cool from a place you visit!). If mailing is too complicated, like it was for Nicole, you can find other ways to let your SO know you're thinking about them. "It would've been super complicated and taken weeks for him to send me anything [he was in Boston while she was in China], but I ordered him pizza delivery once," she says. Such a cute and simple idea! If your SO feels like they're still an important part of your life, the relationship will continue to grow rather than be put on hold.

If you’re still feeling uneasy about where your relationship stands once you go abroad, talk to your SO about it. If you don’t trust them, the relationship isn’t going to last anyway — so that shouldn’t be an issue. Figure out what’s going to work best for you and be prepared. It’s not going to be a walk in the park, but as Isabel says, “Long distance is really hard but not impossible!” If you’re meant to be with your SO, you’ll get through it. Good luck, collegiettes!
