Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Wildfires in Southern California Have Forced Over 27,000 People to Evacuate

Authorities in Southern California say rapidly-spreading wildfires have destroyed over 50,000 acres of land in Ventura County, California, the Huffington Post reports. So far, more than 27,000 people have been forced to evacuate after the governor declared a state of emergency, and that number could continue to rise as powerful winds of up to 70 miles per hour continue to blow. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported, but the fires have destroyed 150 buildings and caused 250,000 homes to be without power.

Patagonia Is Suing President Trump Over His Executive Order Reducing National Monuments

Outdoor brand Patagonia has said that it plans to sue President Trump following his executive order that will drastically reduce the size of two national monuments in Utah, the Washington Post says. Following the Trump administration's announcement on Monday that it plans to cut government protection of over two million acres of national parks, the company's founder is fighting back. Patagonia's website now features a homepage that reads, "The president stole your land. This is the largest elimination of protected land in American history." Patagonia is already known for its environmental activism, releasing an ad earlier this year about the importance of preserving national parks.

Instagram's Newest Feature Allows You to Keep Your Story Up for More Than 24 Hours

If you've ever been bummed that you forgot to save that cute Insta story of you and your besties from a night out before time ran out, you're going to love Instagram's newest feature. The app just rolled out new "Stories Archive" and "Stories Highlights" features that allow you to privately save your favorite moments (kind of like Snapchat's "Memories") and publicly highlight stories you want to keep on your profile for more than 24 hours — a total game-changer.

Meme of the day:

Because finals week is (unfortunately) almost here.

Why Patagonia, REI, North Face & More Are Taking a Stand Against Trump

This Monday, President Trump signed two proclamations that allow a huge reduction of land from the Bears Ears and Grand Stairs Escalante monuments in Utah––think 2 million acres to be exact. These proclamations basically make protected land open to being torn down, mined for oil, and constructed on for lodgings and other big capital projects. Trump’s reduction of these protected lands was shocking to many, including outdoor retail brands like Patagonia, REI and North Face. Shortly after the news broke, the brands took to Twitter to start a discussion on just how damaging the rollback of land protection is to our nation.

North Face even went as far as starting up a campaign for a Bear Ears Education Center as a more productive and environmentally-conscious use of the now unprotected land.

This call to action from retailers is not only inspiring, but crucial. Like with the America-First Offshore Energy Strategy, Trump’s weighing of money-making projects over environmental protections is no secret after the huge changes he’s been implementing this past year. With the big lifts of protections on public lands, we’re all wondering what our country’s landscape is going to look like after the next three years, but we’re glad that these big brands are fighting back now. Your North Face backpack deserves a good pat on the back after this one.

What To Do When a Friendship is Falling Apart

College is a time to discover yourself, learn new things, gain experiences and make friends. This process may involve losing some friends along the way. Whether you went to a school where you knew absolutely no one or you had a couple of besties by your side, you’re most likely a different person than who you were on move-in day freshman year. A long-time but long-distance friendship from home may suffer from lack of communication, or a friendship with someone at school may start to fizzle out simply because you’re both different people.

Some of us may be okay with losing a friend or two, as college offers us the chance to grow and discover ourselves; others may not be so okay with that idea. "It's a unique time of life. You'll be thrown together in the same place with others who are just as interested in meeting new friends as you are," says Irene S. Levine, Ph.D., psychologist, friendship expert and producer of The Friendship Blog. "But even though it's an opportune time to make new friends, you may also lose some friends along the way." Here’s how to know whether a friendship is worth saving and, if so, how you can revive it.

Is the friendship worth saving?

Deciding whether or not a friendship is worth saving is really up to you. Of course, there are many things to consider when making this decision. How long have you been friends? What did this friendship contribute to your life? How does this friendship affect your other friendships? And finally, the most obvious question: Do you want to be friends with this person? “Friendships are voluntary relationships and should be mutually rewarding,” says Dr. Levine.

These are all important things to consider when your friendship hits a rough patch. Being friends with someone you’ve known for a long time can be really special; in a way, they know you better than anyone else. “Your shared history can never be replaced," Dr. Levine reminds us. They’ve watched you grow up; and you, them. You experienced a lot of important things together, like middle and high school, dances, first boyfriends, graduation and now college.

And there’s the actual friendship and what it’s contributed to your life to consider. Has this person made you a better person? Have they helped you to grow and improve? Have you learned from them in any way? This is what friendships should be, after all. Friends should be people who inspire you, push you, love you and help you.

Something you may also want to consider is how this friendship affects your other friendships, or how ending the friendship will affect your other friendships. Are you and this friend in friend groups with your other close friends? Will ending things with this friend make things awkward and complicated for your other friends? Not to say that you should stay in a friendship just to make it convenient for other people. We’re not saying that at all. It may just be something you want to consider. “In some cases, you may choose to remain casual acquaintances by seeing each other less often or only socializing as part of a group,” says Dr. Levine.

And finally, do you want to remain friends with this person? You can think about it all you want—you can complain, question, cry about it—but it really comes down to whether or not you want to try to make this friendship work. How important is it to you? Is the friendship worth the fight? "Your answers to these questions need to be carefully considered because once you lose a friendship, it’s hard to repair it at the same level of intimacy,” Dr. Levine says.

How to save it

Let your friend know that the friendship has felt off

"No relationship is perfect so if you value a friendship, it’s important to work out misunderstandings or missed expectations,” says Dr. Levine. It’s important to let your friend know that you’ve felt that something’s been wrong in the relationship. Chances are they’ve probably noticed something has been a little off, too. It’s not fair to them to continue in the friendship if they don’t think anything is wrong while you’ve been worrying about it.

Talking through these issues together can really help you two build the friendship back up. Be careful not to accuse or get hostile. Be honest and open as you talk through the problems you’ve noticed in the friendship, and hopefully, your friend will do the same.

Make a conscious effort to improve things

Part of the reason your friendship may have gotten rocky in the first place is that you and your friend have stopped texting, talking and hanging out as often as you used to. To make sure it doesn’t happen again, make a conscious effort to text them and make plans with them.

With busy schedules, it may be hard to find times to hang out with your friend, which is what may have happened in the first place. If this is the case, try to find a regular time that works for both of you, perhaps weekly. Maybe you’re both free Thursday mornings; get coffee! Maybe you’re both free Tuesday nights; watch This Is Us together! Having a scheduled time to hang out every week takes away the effort of carving out a specific time each week.

Communicate openly and honestly

This is just as important to maintaining the relationship as it is to getting it back on track. No matter what the relationship, it’s always important to communicate openly and honestly. If you tend to shy away from confrontation, don’t think of it that way. Think of it as a way of maintaining a healthy relationship.

If your friend does something that bothers you, let her know in a kind and respectful way. If you need to cancel plans to work on homework, just be honest about it. There’s no need to make up excuses. If you’re both truthful, your friendship has less chance of failing again.

Make your friendships a priority

College is all about juggling priorities. Between classes and homework, student organizations, internships and jobs, it can be difficult to balance things. While all of those things are important, personal relationships are important, too.

Just like you make it a priority to call home every week (or every day for some of us), make it a priority to talk and hang out with your friends. The friends you have at college are practically your family away from home at your home away from home. Treat them like it, and make them a priority in your life.

Though college is a time of growth and change, you don’t have to change so much that you grow out of your friendships. Your friends are growing, too, so make an effort to discover what you have in common. Friendships are important, so if you want to save one that’s falling apart, put in the time and effort to do so.

Hold Up, Stop Everything— Is Vine Coming Back?

Last week on Twitter, Vine Co-Founder Dom Hoffmann suggested a return of Vine. He claimed to be funding a “follow-up” to the popular, meme-making video sharing platform that tons of people really miss

Today, Hoffmann shared an image of the iconic green Vine logo that said “V2” instead of just “V.” This has lead to a lot of speculation about an upcoming reboot for the video sharing app.

While Hoffmann has been hinting at his intentions via Twitter, it's all still pretty vague. He said that he had been “feeling” a Vine comeback for some time and has received numerous pleas from the public to bring Vine back. However, he’s yet to give more details saying that there was “nothing else to share yet, but more as it develops."

Vine shut down shortly after it was bought by Twitter in 2016. This caused huge backlash across the web and a wide variety of Vine compilations to commemorate the app. Vine faced lots of competition from other social media sites that expanded their video sharing abilities, which Twitter claimed as a reason for the shut down.

Her Campus reached out to Vine on Wednesday, though they had no comment on "V2" at the time of publication.

Pennsylvania Lawmakers Had A Deeply Uncomfortable, Homophobic Exchange Over An Arm Touch

During a debate about a land-use bill during a State House committee meeting Tuesday night, conservative Pennsylvania state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, who chairs the committee, interrupted to share some groundbreaking news: “I’m a heterosexual. I have a wife.”

According to theWashington Post, Metcalfe’s comment was directed at Rep. Matt Bradford, a democrat, who laid his hand on Metcalfe’s forearm for a moment in an attempt to get his attention.

When Metcalfe placed his hand on him, Bradford said, “Look, I'm a heterosexual. I have a wife, I love my wife, I don't like men — as you might. But stop touching me all the time...Keep your hands to yourself. If you want to touch somebody, you have people on your side of the aisle who might like it. I don’t.”

Bradford, who is married to a woman and has four kids, appeared to be shocked as he laughed and said, “Okay, chairman, chairman. We're officially off the rails. ... My intent was just to beg for your permission for about 30 seconds.”

In an interview with triblive.com, Bradford clarified that he “speaks with his hands”.

While, yeah, no one should touch anyone who doesn't want to be touched, Metcalfe’s reaction to Bradford’s touch is deeply troubling and indicative of homophobia. Touching another person’s arm isn't a sexual act and sexualizing it implies that Metcalfe had pre-existing prejudices or was already fearful that someone in the room was gay.

“I don't know what his sexuality or his sexual behavior is. I don't know what it is. But I know from him touching me all the time that he indicates he likes to touch men,” Metcalfe told triblive.com. “I said what I said. If he likes to touch other men, then find another man to touch because I'm not the man to be touching.”

Brian Sims, Pennsylvania’s first openly gay lawmaker, posted his thoughts about the encounter on Facebook: “THIS is what dealing with Republicans in Pennsylvania has become. THIS is why they're attacking our youngest and most vulnerable members of the LGBT community. THIS is what a broken moral compass, combined with gerrymandered, false leadership looks like.”

Metcalfe’s comments are particularly troubling when coupled with the fact that Bradford is married to a woman. We live in a culture that where LGBTQ people already face a horrific amount of violence and bullying. If Metcalfe judged a straight lawmaker so harshly for his gestures, how much more harsh would he be if the lawmaker was openly gay?

Starbucks Is Opening Their Biggest Store Ever & A Trip There Is Officially The Only Thing I Want For Christmas

Do you remember when you were little and all you wanted was a trip to the American Girl Doll Store? (Or the LEGO Store, or whatever it was that you adored as a child.) Well, prepare to call up your parents and start begging for a trip just like you did at age nine, because Starbucks is opening up a 30,000 sq-ft. store in Shanghai.

According to People, this store is called the Reserve Roastery and will open December 6th. People states, “Attractions will include three coffee bars and a 3-D printed tea bar. At the coffee bars, hundreds of baristas will handcraft some of the rarest, small-lot coffees in the world using one of six brewing methods.”

True to Starbucks’ innovative nature, Reserve Roastery will also boast high-tech aspects. You will be able to point your phone at various features around the store to learn more about them, and you can create a virtual journey through a Starbucks mobile app.

Why is Shanghai the chosen location? According to Howard Schultz, the executive chairman of Starbucks Coffee Company, “The affinity we have built with our partners (employees) and customers over the past 18 years in China is special and we knew we must bring the Reserve Roastery, our boldest, most premium store ever, to Shanghai, China’s bustling metropolitan hub and one of the world’s most dynamic retail destinations, as well as a gateway to customers from across Asia and the world. We’ve created a space that both recognizes and celebrates our 46-year history of coffee leadership and retail innovation with China’s rich, diverse culture.”

It’s been about a decade since I begged my parents for a trip to the American Girl Doll store for Christmas. Do you think those puppy-dog eyes still work? Mom, Dad, I promise I’ll never ask for anything again if I can go drink unlimited soy lattes in Shanghai!

5 Last Minute Ways to Ace Your Finals If You Procrastinated

$

We’ve all been there. We know, you told yourself you weren’t going to procrastinate, but somehow it’s still the day before the final and you don’t know a thing. Everyone procrastinates a little bit, but don’t worry, there’s still a chance. Ever wondered how those who panic before the exam and say they barely studied still seem to ace it? If you want to get in on their top secret ways to get an A even with procrastination, here’s some tips to follow.

1. Put your phone away

Now we’ve all heard this one before. It’s definitely not as easy as it sounds, but it will make a world of a difference. Our phones are such an easy distraction with all the social media apps there are today. It’s almost like we instinctively pick up our phones to check for any possible notification, and even if it seems like it’ll only take a second, those seconds will add up before you know it. One of the best things to do is to turn it completely off and keep it far away. No matter how addicted we are to our phones, we are all still very lazy college students at heart. Even the most active students probably won’t get up out of their comfy study spot to “check the time” on their phones.

Jacob Hilbig, a freshman at the University of Oklahoma, says that he has a different technique to keep himself from checking his phone. “I usually tell the people I usually text that I’m cramming for a test,” he says. “That way, they know that I won’t be responding and they won’t text me or ask me to hang out.” You can also switch your phone to 'Do Not Disturb' so you don't get notifications from your usual apps. Can’t check your phone if it isn’t even buzzing, right?

2. Focus only on the topics you will need to know for the test

One of the biggest things that students do wrong when cramming for a test is that they try to learn everything. There’s absolutely no way in the world a person could learn an entire year or even semester’s worth of knowledge in a single day. However, there’s also no way that every topic will be covered in a single exam. Focus on the things that your professor went over multiple times; they’re most likely to be on the exam. We know that sometimes it’s hard to understand the big picture without the small things in between, but it’s crunch time and we need to be as efficient as possible.

Melany Gutierrez, a senior at Allen High School, says that she likes to go through her notes and highlight the topics she thinks are important. “It’s pretty easy to tell the main ideas from the insignificant ones,” she says. “Most of the time, I’ll pick and choose topics the teacher has mentioned a lot and make sure I thoroughly understand those.” Remember, it’s crunch time; right now, it’s all about getting the grade.

3. Look up study guides/quizlets online

We live in a tech-savvy world. Everything is on the internet now, so take advantage of it. There are hundreds and thousands of people that have taken the exact same courses as you. Most likely, there are more than a few people who decided not to procrastinate and make very detailed study guides or even flash cards to study for final exams… and decided to be nice enough to share them. These study guides can help you get a good sense of which topics you should focus on.

Ameeti Kalra, a junior at Texas A&M University, claims that these were her absolute savior. “I was shocked to see how many different study guides and resources there were online,” she states. “I wish I knew who made these so I could thank them in person. They saved my grades.” Wow, now that’s some commitment. Good to know there are some helpful folks still out there!

4. Don’t study in groups

You many think you’re getting a lot done, but odds are, you’re probably not. It may work for a select few people, but for the most part, studying in groups mostly just ends up taking up a lot of unnecessary time. If you’re a procrastinator, this will definitely not make the most of your cramming time. When studying in groups, you may have to spend time focusing on topics you already know for the sake of another group member. If there is a time to be selfish, this is it. Even if you’re all studying for the same thing, it’s hard to concentrate on studying when there are so many other things to talk about. However, it’s always good to ask questions on things you may not understand, but make sure that’s all the talking you do.

Brian Seton, a junior at the University of Maryland says that sometimes he enjoys studying with people… alone. “I think it’s a good idea to have people that are in your class next to you, while you still try to study on your own,” he says. “That way, when you have a question they’re right there to explain, but I always make sure to put my headphones back in and focus alone right after they answer my question.” This is a good way to be efficient in studying. Don’t forget to make the most of your time. There’s always time to gossip later!

5. Get a good night’s rest

Now, this is one that’s often misunderstood. Let’s just say that from personal experience, staying up all night does not help. There comes a point when your brain no longer has the ability to retain information anymore. There’s absolutely no point in staying up all night trying to cram all this information into your brain because it’ll go straight out the other ear. Take it from a college student that has done both.

Hoan Le, a senior at the University of Texas at Dallas, says that she still sleeps around midnight even if she feels she doesn't know enough. “I’ve realized that by staying up all night, I just become way too tired in the morning,” she says. “When it comes time to take the exam, my mind is moving way too fast and I can’t seem to focus on the questions.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. No amount of coffee can keep you up forever.

When taking an exam, it’s important to remember that at one point, you knew this information. It’s all about focusing during the exam and using the knowledge you already know to choose the best answer. We know, exams are hard and there are tricky questions, but you can still get an A if you take the test to the best of your ability. Don’t let the tricks get to you just because you’re panicked or worn out. Take your time and remember that you know this.

Al Franken is Scheduled to Speak Tomorrow Following Yet Another Sexual Harassment Allegation

Coinciding with the most recent allegations against Al Franken, the Senator's office has announced that he will be speaking tomorrow. While the topic has yet to be announced, some Democratic senators are speculating that Franken will resign, according to CNN.

So far, seven women in total have accused Franken of sexual misconduct. Most recently, Politico reported that Franken tried to force himself onto an unnamed woman. The woman said that Franken tried to kiss her after a taping of his radio show and said it was his “right as an entertainer” to do so. Franken denied the allegation.

At first, only a few Franken’s colleagues spoke out about the alleged incidents. After the most recent news, some senators, like Kirsten Gillibrand from New York, told the Chicago Tribune that “enough is enough.”

She went on to say that “we need to draw a line in the sand and say none of it is OK, none of it is acceptable and we, as elected leaders, should absolutely be held to a higher standard.”

This follows news that John Conyers, a Democratic Representative from Michigan, announced yesterday that he was retiring following his own accusations of sexual harassment.

Donald Trump Jr. Reportedly Asked A Russian Lawyer For Dirt On The Clinton Foundation In That 2016 Trump Tower Meeting

On June 9, 2016, Donald Trump Jr. sat in a meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya in Trump Tower and asked her if she had “evidence of illegal donations to the Clinton Foundation,” NBC News reported on Wednesday. In the meeting, Veselnitskaya was confused by the question and said she didn’t have any information on the Clintons. She recalled that, at this point, Trump Jr. was essentially ready to end their conversation.

It was clear that going into this meeting, Trump Jr. and Veselnitskaya had two very different motives. Veselnitskaya was investigating the Magnitsky Act, a law that blocks 44 human rights abusers from entering the U.S., according to TheWashington Post. Trump Jr. was reportedly there for dirt on the Clintons that had been promised to him by Rob Goldstone, a music promoter who worked for a family of Russian oligarchs, the Agalarovs, that has close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.TheNew York Times reports that Trump Jr. replied to Goldstone's offer of info on the Clintons by saying, “I love it especially later in the summer," suggesting that the timing would perfectly align with voters' increasing focus on the 2016 election.

Goldstone had also told Trump Jr. that Veselnitskaya worked for the Russian government but that was, in fact, not true. According to the Times, Veselnitskaya claims that nothing about the presidential election was discussed in their meeting and that she had "never acted on behalf of the Russian government." A spokesman for Putin has also confirmed that the president does not know Veselnitskaya.

In September, Trump Jr. released a statement about the meeting, saying he wanted to “hear the Russians out” to see if their information would reveal anything about Hillary Clinton’s “fitness, character or qualifications.” While it seems that his quest for these details didn't go very well, where’s the investigation into Trump Jr.’s dad’s “fitness, character and qualifications?”

'Time' Named #MeToo Movement's 'Silence Breakers' as Its Person of the Year & Here's Why That Matters

$

Did you know that, according to an ABC News-Washington Post poll, 68 percent of women experience unwanted sexual advances at work? And of those 68 percent, 75 percent reported the harassment coming from someone in a position of power over their job. This is why Time is naming the #MeToo movement and its “Silence Breakers” as its Person of the Year.

The Silence Breakers are the dozens of people—both men and women—who have spoken out against the sexual assault they’ve experienced specifically in their workplace and contributed to rapidly spreading awareness of these incidences in the past few months. Publishing a cover featuring women with prominent sexual harassment stories, such as Taylor Swift, actress Ashley Judd and former Uber engineer Susan Fowler, Time has made a bold statement about the validity of these victims' experiences, and many have applauded the magazine for its decision.

From Judd’s experience with major film producer Harvey Weinstein to an anonymous hospital worker who only features her arm on the magazine cover, all of these people seen in the Person of the Year feature share one similarity: they had experienced sexual harassment while at their job.

According to the New York Times,  the explosion of #MeToo, a movement initially created by activist Tarana Burke and made viral by a tweet from Alyssa Milano, has led to over 12 million people speaking out about sexual violence. This is a huge issue that has previously been silenced because the perpetrators are usually people in positions of power. People like Harvey Weinstein and Matt Lauer are manipulating other people who are vulnerable to their roles in their workplace.

Workplace harassment is not funny and it’s not a joke. This problem needs to be highlighted and victims’ voices need to be amplified so action is taken against these people of power. As seen in the National Women’s Law Center's workplace justice fact sheet about sexual harassment in the workplace, employers can be legally responsible for sexual harassment against their employees. Perpetrators need to be held accountable for their actions, and Time choosing to highlight those who spoke out against their harassers is a major step in the right direction. However, criticism of the decision stems from factors such as naming President Donald Trump as the year's runner-up while he is listed as an abuser in the cover piece and highlighting certain public figures over others who have spoken out.

Regardless of these critiques, the only way to create real change is to speak up and out about it. Be a Silence Breaker. It seems that real change is stemming from this and we hope that change continues.

Taylor Swift Spoke Up as a 'Time''Silence Breaker' on Sexual Assault, & It's Pretty Inspiring

She was included among Time's Silence Breakers in its Person of the Year feature, and Taylor Swift commemorated this milestone by giving a rare interview for the magazine's coverage of the men and women speaking out against their experiences with sexual harassment. Swift was included in the group of Silence Breakers for speaking out against radio DJ David Mueller, who sued Swift for defamation after she told his employer how he grabbed her behind while they posed for a photo together at his radio station in 2013. Swift countersued, asking for just $1 in return, and emerged from the case victorious. Becoming notoriously private in recent years, Swift speaking for this cause only emphasizes that people in all industries are affected by sexual harassment.

"I figured that if he would be brazen enough to assault me under these risky circumstances and high stakes, imagine what he might do to a vulnerable, young artist if given the chance," Swift said of Mueller in the Time interview. "It was important to report the incident to his radio station because I felt like they needed to know."

Swift also addressed her no-BS approach to the case's trial procedures, saying, "When I testified, I...had to watch this man's attorney bully, badger and harass my team, including my mother, over inane details and ridiculous minutiae, accusing them, and me, of lying...I was on the stand. I was angry. In that moment, I decided to forego any courtroom formalities and just answer the questions the way it happened."

Now, we all know the old Taylor is supposedly long gone, but I'm sure the Swift from a decade ago could not have been so assertive in this situation. Apparently, she went all out when she was on the stand in court, and she was even told her account of her assault was "the most amount of times the word 'ass' has ever been said in Colorado Federal Court."

The singer also pointed out that amidst this "watershed moment" for awareness of widespread sexual harassment are many victims still feeling threatened by their abusers' hold on them. "When the jury found in my favor, the man who sexually assaulted me was court-ordered to give me a symbolic $1," she said, "To this day he has not paid me that dollar, and I think that act of defiance is symbolic in itself."

Swift joined actress Ashley Judd, former Uber engineer Susan Fowler, lobbyist Adama Iwu, Mexican immigrant Isabel Pascual and the arm of an anonymous woman (representing those afraid to come forward with their stories) on the cover of Time's Person of the Year issue. Representing the music industry in the group, she also shared what she hopes fans will take away from this groundbreaking movement.

"My advice is that you not blame yourself and do not accept the blame others will try to place on you," she said. "You should not be blamed for waiting 15 minutes or 15 days or 15 years to report sexual assault or harassment, or for the outcome of what happens to a person after he or she makes the choice to sexually harass or assault you."

Well said, girl.

Al Franken is Scheduled To Speak Following Yet Another Sexual Harassment Allegation

Update 12/7/17:  Shortly before Noon EST on Thursday, December 7, Sen. Al Franken announced that he would resign from his seat in the Senate.

While Franken notably said that he believed "some of the allegations against [him] are simply not true," and claimed he might've remembered events differently, he said that he still decided it was best to resign.

During his speech, Franken noted what he said was the "irony" of him resigning while allegations against President Donald Trump for harassment and assault are also well-documented.

Original story:  Coinciding with the most recent allegations against Al Franken, the Senator's office has announced that he will be speaking on Thursday.

HC Wake-Up Call: The House of Reps. Passes Law on Concealed Carry Reciprocity, White House Officials Say Jerusalem Decision 'Derails' Peace & Starbucks Introduces Christmas Tree Frappuccino

The House of Representatives Passes Bill on Looser Gun Regulations

CNN reports that the House of Representatives approved a bill on Wednesday called "concealed carry reciprocity," allowing those with permits to have concealed weapons to travel with said weapons to other states. The freedom to do has reportedly been a strong goal for the National Rifle Association (NRA).

While Republican Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia said that his right to bear arms shouldn't "be undermined simply because I travel to another state," the politician representing Newtown, Connecticut, understandably felt differently. Democratic Rep. Elizabeth Esty called the legislation "an outrage and an insult" to families of gun violence victims.

White House Officials Admit That Trump's Jerusalem Decision Affects Road to Peace

Following President Trump's controversial decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, two White House officials have admitted that the choice has stalled the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. "We're prepared for derailment—temporary, I hope," said an official. "Pretty sure it will be temporary."

The officials also confirmed that Trump's peace team hasn't spoken with Palestinian officials since the news broke. "In terms of a moment where [the announcement] could happen, where it could be the least disruptive at a moment in time, this is the moment," the other official said. "We know there will be some short term pain, but think it will help in the long run."

Starbucks Is Making Yet Another New Holiday Drink

Beginning today, Starbucks is bringing us another new addition to the family of holiday drinks. This time, we have the Christmas Tree Frappuccino to look forward to. Forming a base from the Peppermint Mocha Creme Frappuccino blend, the drink will also include a matcha whipped cream serving as the tree and candied cranberry, caramel drizzle and a freeze-dried strawberry as the ornaments, tinsel and star. Unlike regular seasonal drinks, this special concoction will only stay in stores until Dec. 11, so if you're one of those lazy people that doesn't get their Christmas tree out until the last minute, maybe trying this drink out can be your motivation!

What to look out for...

Today is National Cotton Candy Day, and I know no better way to embrace your inner child as we get closer to the weekend. While the sugary treat is a little hard to track down if you're not at the circus or a carnival, you can always attempt making your own!

Three People Are Reportedly Dead After Shooting In New Mexico High School

A Thursday morning shooting at Aztec High School in Aztec, New Mexico is rapidly making headlines, as multiple sources conflict on the identity and the number of victims shot dead, according to People

The San Juan County Sheriff's office has confirmed the shooting at this time to People, but while it was initially believed that three students were shot dead in the shooting, the Albuquerque Journal reported at the time that San Juan County Sheriff Ken Christesen was not able to answer any additional questions, or if one of the three shot dead included the shooter.

According to the Journal, a Facebook post was made around 9 a.m. by the San Juan County Sheriff’s Department that the high school has been locked down and is being evacuated. No reports of any injured were made at the time.

The San Juan County Sheriff's Department went live on Facebook about an hour ago, expressing that very limited information on the current situation could be released at this time.

CNN reported during an update to an original post that Aztec Police Chief Mike Heal says two people and a shooter were shot. Aztec Mayor Sally Burbridge confirmed that the shooter was shot down, CNN reported, and that there was no longer a threat to the community. The post has since then been updated twice, confirming the death of the shooter, although whether the shooter was a student or a visitor is still unknown.

The New Mexico State Police Twitter account released an update that the suspected shooter is dead, along with two students. The account Tweeted soon after that all confirmed details of the shooting would be released on the account.

Again, as this is a very rapidly developing story, and it's important to be mindful of misinformation reported early on.

This story will be updated as more develops.

10 Little Lifestyle Changes That Can Make You Healthier

Being healthier can seem like a daunting task at times. You hear about girls going vegan or trying out different cleanses and suddenly it feels like you have to overhaul your entire lifestyle to be healthier. But in reality, there are small things you can do without going totally out of your way, which appeals to the busy (and sometimes lazy) college girl inside of us.

1. Keep a food journal

It just takes a few seconds to jot down what you eat. This doesn’t necessarily mean counting calories, but just being aware of exactly what you eat in a day. “Hands down, this is the easiest activity and one where people always make healthier changes without me saying a thing,” Cindi Inman, a registered dietician and licensed nutritionist at Southern Illinois University says, “Writing down what you eat and drink automatically makes you mindful. I’m a big fan of mindful eating.”

If you’re not a fan of the ol’ pen and paper, you can simply start a note on your phone or download an app like MyFitnessPal or MyPlate that has more features, like logging exercise and specific nutrition and calories.

2. Catch some Zzzs

Sleep gives you energy, so if you’re lacking sleep you might be craving other forms of energy, which explains all those the late-night snacks.“There are a lot of studies that show a link between mindless, nervous, emotional meeting and getting a proper amount of sleep,” Hall says.

3. Fruit, fruit, fruit

Everyone loves fruit, right? The numerous options and sweetness make eating healthy easy. Inman recommends fresh fruit or yogurt with fresh or frozen fruit as a substitute for people suffering from a serious sweet tooth.

You can also start your day with something healthy by incorporating fruit into your breakfast. Taylor Larson, a senior at Temple University, eats fruit for breakfast every morning. “At first, it was hard to give up things like bagels but now I don't even think twice about it,” Larson says. “It sets you up to make eating healthier eating choices for the rest of the day and also makes you feel better than you would if you had a huge bagel/donut/sugary cereal/etc.”

4. Set literal boundaries

When you’re in a dorm room or tiny apartment the line between eating and living space blurs a little. With classes, papers and exams you might only eat while doing something else, but Peggy Hall, featured health expert for the ABC Radio Network and wellness expert for America Now television show, finds designating times and places for eating eliminates mindless, guilty snacking and makes eating an enjoyable experience itself.

“When you study, study and when you eat, eat,” Hall says.“You can also set some boundaries for yourself in terms of where you’re going to eat, like only sitting down at a table, not in front of a computer.”

5. Eat breakfast

Skipping meals will not fare well, especially when you have a busy day ahead of you. Coffee might give you a jolt of energy, but won’t sustain that level throughout the day. Inman says deciding to eat breakfast, even a small one, can set you up for a healthier day. “It doesn’t have to be much and it doesn’t have to be fancy,” Inman says. “It could simply be a piece of fruit, a granola bar (high in fiber is the best), a hard-boiled egg, or low fat and low sugar yogurt.”

Hall says eating breakfast is a good example of a seemingly little decision that can change your whole day. “Small changes can have a domino effect,” she says. “If you start out the day with a healthy breakfast, you feel good about yourself in that you nourished yourself and you are on the right track for the whole day.”

6. Meal prep

“What could be fun would be getting together with a couple of friends and set aside a time of two or three hours to prepare food you could use for the rest of the week,” Hall says. “You can get food, precooked or cooked, and do some batch cooking.”

By planning ahead you’re less likely to succumb to temptation or cravings. McDonalds becomes a lot less appealing if you have a homecooked meal waiting for you. “I meal prep one meal per week - it could be a homemade granola bar or a batch of roasted veggies but having those on hand will help me stay on track,” says Emily DiNuzzo, a senior at Pace University.

7. Shop smart

Being on your own for the first time can lead to some poor choices out in the real world, shopping for food without the veto power of mom or dad. But shopping for healthy foods doesn’t have to take all your time or money. You’d be surprised at the stores that sell healthy foods without the Whole Food’s price tag. Even CVS sells a variety of wholesome vegan snacks, including brands like Larabar and CVS' exclusive brand Gold Emblem abound™. You don't need to go far to get your fix of healthy snacks!

And if you don’t want to leave the comfort of your dorm or apartment, the internet provides plenty of ways, like AmazonFresh, where you can order food. “Thrive Market is a great source for buying steeply discounted healthy and organic foods online, and I was eligible for a free membership as a student,” says Erin Walker, a junior at UIC.

8. Eat something green every day

“M&Ms don’t count” as my pediatrician used to say. It’s true though! Veggies are low-calorie foods packed with nutrition. “I try to remember to eat something green with every meal. This isn't always possible obviously, but with that as the goa,l I always tend to eat more veggies and leafy greens,” Emily says.

9. Pack snacks

Many college students fall into bad habits of mindlessly snacking or feeling hungry and reaching for the potato chips instead of cutting up an apple. Rather than wait for that craving, plan ahead for when hunger hits. “When I'm out of the house for a long period of time, especially in the afternoon, I need a snack to tide me over until dinner. Instead of reaching for the cookies, I pack a Ziploc with grapes,” Cristina Lupo, a senior at Maris College, says. “It's a small decision but makes for one healthy choice during the day.”

Destinye Barnes-Hall, a sophomore at the University of Texas at San Antonio, also prepares her snacks before she leaves for the day. “I pack or bring snacks so that I won’t buy the overpriced food on campus as well as control what is in my food and not be forced to buy junk food when I’m hungry,” Destinye says. Inman suggests buying fresh veggies, and then washing, slicing and storing them in a clear container in your fridge. “Keeping these types of foods handy and ready-to-go will help you to choose these over junk food,” Inman says.

10. Think before you eat

“It really comes down to awareness of how certain foods make you, yourself, feel which can be a huge breakthrough for people,” Hall says. “The very first small change you can do is eat for yourself—don’t worry about what everybody else is eating. What is going to bring you energy?”

Using our brains might be hard for calculus, but with food we usually know what the right choices are. Taking that extra five seconds to decide if you really want that cookie or really are hungry will save you the effort of revamping your entire lifestyle to see change.

“Be mindful.  Be aware of how you are feeling.  Are you really hungry?  Do you really need seconds?  Stop and think about it.” Inman says. “If you still want seconds, have them – enjoy them and certainly don’t feel guilty about it!”

Cleanses and diets might sound like the most effective way to get results, but they’re not sustainable or healthy. The easiest thing you can do -- and let’s be real, what we all want to do anyway -- is eat quality, wholesome food. “Enjoy what you eat and eat what you enjoy,” Hall says. “There’s no sense in eating food you’re going to feel guilty about.”

The DJ Who Was Ordered to Pay Taylor Swift $1 in Groping Case Thinks He Got the Last Laugh

Although Taylor Swift usually gets the last word, David Mueller—the radio DJ Swift countersued for groping her in a 2013 photo op—is determined to get the final dig at the singer after a judge mandated he pay her a symbolic $1.

Mueller told the Associated Press he mailed the artist a Sacagawea coin on Nov. 28. The choice of currency, which features the Native American woman responsible for leading Lewis and Clark through the Louisiana Territory, was a deliberate jab at Swift, according to Mueller. “I mean if this is all about women’s rights. … It’s a little poke at them, a little bit,” Mueller told the AP. “I mean, I think they made this into a publicity stunt, and this is my life.” The “publicity stunt” countersuit was in response to Mueller’s original lawsuit, in which he sought up to $3 million in damages after he was fired for groping Swift.

On Monday, the singer was named among the "Silence Breakers" who were honored as TIME’s Person of the Year, for coming forward about her experience with sexual assault.

“At the time, I was headlining a major arena tour and there were a number of people in the room that saw this plus a photo of it happening,” Swift explained in her interview with TIME. “I figured that if he would be brazen enough to assault me under these risky circumstances and high stakes, imagine what he might do to a vulnerable, young artist if given the chance. It was important to report the incident to his radio station because I felt like they needed to know. The radio station conducted its own investigation and fired him. Two years later, he sued me.”

The countersuit proceedings were far from cordial. According to Swift, her mother was physically ill after being put on the stand and interrogated by Mueller’s legal team. When it was Taylor's turn to speak, she didn't hold back. The former DJ’s lawyer asked if she felt guilty for causing Mueller to lose his job, and the Reputation singer was not having any of the blame-shifting. “I’m not going to let you or your client make me feel in any way that this is my fault. Here we are years later, and I’m being blamed for the unfortunate events of his life that are the product of his decisions—not mine,” she testified.

In her TIME interview, Swift said that Mueller had not yet paid the symbolic $1. Now that the debt has been settled, this case can continue to empower other victims of sexual harassment and assault to no longer feel guilty for the actions of others or for coming forward.

A Biodegradable, Flushable Pregnancy Test Has Been Cleared By The FDA & The Future's Looking Pretty Green

Two University of Pennsylvania graduate students created the first flushable pregnancy test, that was just cleared by the FDA for over-the-counter sales, Jezebel reports.

The Lia test works just like any regular pregnancy test, but because it is made with plant fibers and natural materials. Much like toilet paper, it is flushable and arguably safer for the environment. It is also more discreet and not having to walk around or attempt to hide a chunky plastic pregnancy test is one of the many perks.

The company’s founders, Bethany Edwards and Anna Courturier Simpson just recently won $50,000 and the Disrupt Cup at TechCrunch’s Disrupt Berlin 2017. During a Q&A they noted, “To date in our testing we’ve had 100 percent sensitivity and 100 percent specificity. So there’s no false positives, no false negatives, in the lab and in our user studies.”

They also said that the first pregnancy test to hit the user-friendly market was 30 years ago, and since then there has been zero innovation. “It’s been the same stick test since 1987, and that’s kind of crazy,” Edwards says.

They plan to begin selling tests in mid-2018 and predict the price will range between $9 and $22.

This Is Why Meghan Markle's Famous Friends Probably Won't Be in Her Wedding Party

With a wedding date set for May 2018, planning for the royal wedding has surely begun, and I cannot wait to see Prince Harry and Meghan Markle say "I do." I know I'm not the only one still gushing over their engagement—that ring was enough to make me cry. Usually, the bride and groom would pick out bridesmaids, groomsmen, the flower girl and the ring bearer, but things are a little different for royal weddings. So will we see Meghan's famous friends in her wedding party as bridesmaids? Unfortunately, it looks like the answer is no.

To make a long story short, the reason we probably won't see Priyanka Chopra, Serena Williams and Meghan's other celeb friends joining her at the altar is because of tradition. It's not common to see adult women in a royal wedding party unless they are the matron of honor. In these weddings, the bridal party is usually made up of children or teenagers. "Most royal brides do not have adult bridesmaids," Marlene Koenig, a British and European royalty expert told Town & Country. "It would be unusual for a royal bride to have a woman in her late 30s as a maid or matron of honor. The Duchess of Cambridge having her sister, Pippa, was unusual. I would be less surprised, however, if one of [Meghan's] friends read a lesson during the service."

There were some questions as to whether Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton would be part of the wedding as matron of honor because she is a married woman, but, as far as we know, Kate hardly knows Meghan, so that wouldn't really make sense. She's also pregnant and due in April, just one month before the wedding, so she might not be prepared to take on such a large role in the wedding.

Markle has a half sister, but she likely won't be part of the nuptials either considering her recent comments about Meghan not supporting her family financially or emotionally and how that could "destroy" her marriage. So let's assume she won't be anywhere near the bride on her big day.

So who will the wedding party include? I'm so curious to see how this unfolds. Maybe Meghan will break tradition and make Priyanka and Serena her bridesmaids, or perhaps she'll have some of Harry's family fill the roles. I guess only time will tell, but no matter what she chooses, I'm sure the wedding will be beautiful.
