10 Ways to Give Back this Holiday Season

If you're looking to share an impactful gift this year, we hope that you'll consider donating to a non-profit organization in a friend or loved one's name. Below are just a few organizations that support women and girls across the globe in everything from education to reproductive rights, so these are a great place to start if you're looking for a memorable gift that makes a difference. Where will you give this year?

ACLU: The American Civil Liberties Union works to protect rights and liberties of people across the country. They're particularly about protecting free speech and teh right to protest, reproductive freedoms, fighting anti-LGBT discrimination and defending the rights of refugees and immigrants.

Center for Reproductive Rights: The CRR envisions a world where every woman is completely in control of her reproductive choices, and they work tirelessly with legal innovators to make the dream of reproductive freedom a reality.

Girls Not Brides: Girls Not Brides is a global partnership made of more than 800 civil society organizations who committed to ending child marriage and enabling girls to fulfill their potential by providing a safer future.

Girls Who Code: This U.S. nonprofit has a single mission: to close the gender gap in technology. They're currently building the largest pipeline of female engineers, and are set to reach 40,000 girls in all 50 states by the end of this year.

International Women's Health Coalition: IWHC helps advance the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East by supporting leaders and organizations working at the community, national, regional and global levels.

Malala Fund: The Malala Fund works in regions where most girls miss out on secondary education to provide 12 years of free, safe and quality learning.

Planned Parenthood: PP delivers reproductive health care and sex education to millions of people worldwide — and they're currently fighting hard to protect access to birth control.

She Should Run: She Should Run is a non-partisan 501(c)3 that provides an approachable starting place and network for women leaders considering a future run for office. Their current goal is to get 250,000 women running for elected office by 2030.

She's the First: STF provides scholarships to girls in low-income countries who will be the first in their families to graduate high school. They work with the goal to reduce gender inequality and cultivate the next generation of global leaders.

Susan G. Komen: Susan G. Komen is the largest breast cancer organization in the United States that is addressing breast cancer on multiple fronts such as research, community health, global outreach and public policy initiatives.

How She Got There: Catherine Tan, Founder of Notey

Name: Catherine Tan
Job Title: Chief Strategy Officer
College Name and Major: BA Law & Business, University of Warwick
Website: Notey
Twitter: @cathnotey
Instagram: @cathnotey

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

CT:  I founded Notey a few years ago, and I live and breathe it every day. My typical day starts with a Venti size cappuccino and a stand-up team meeting where we share what we’ve accomplished the day before, and our goals for the day ahead. In a fast growing company, it’s so important to stay in sync and make sure our goals are aligned!
Today, for example, I have a few things on my calendar including drawing out a new feature, a late night conference call and a round table discussing how tech is changing the future of education. There is no typical day and that’s why I love it!

What is the best part of your job?

CT: The best part of the job is when you get an honest, authentic testimonial from a client about your product that you’ve built from scratch. Just this morning my client said, “This is the easiest platform I’ve used to create content in a long time.” We’ve launched a new product called "Connect" which helps brands become publishers. Since launching three weeks ago, we’ve already on-boarded a global bank, an international hotel group, and a few e-commerce companies.

What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

CT: I really didn’t know what I wanted to do while in school, but I knew I wanted financial independence and to live in a big city while not going into debt. So I spent a lot of time at the careers office understanding what the best-paying jobs were, where I could also surround myself with smart and hardworking people. That’s how I landed a graduate job at Barclays in London and started my career in finance. I loved it ,but always knew I wanted to start my own thing, whether it be a company or creative project, once I saved a bit of money.

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

CT: “Done is better than perfect.” I know it may be a bit overused… but it’s something I remind myself everyday given my ever-growing to-do list.

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

CT: Hiring people based on a resume, but without thinking thoroughly about how they can add value.

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

CT: There’s been so many, but again, it’s seeing people using a product you’ve built from scratch.

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

CT: Self-Starter. Thinker. Hard Worker. Good Person.

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

CT: Embrace the vicissitude of life! Bumps on the road are inevitable, the only way to achieve your goals is to overcome them.

What's the one thing that's stood out to you the most in a resume?

CT:  One of our applicants wrote a “Bitcoin” song for kicks and uploaded it on YouTube. The song went viral within the bitcoin community and she was tipped 3 bitcoins a few years ago. Now it’s worth around $12,000! A fun fact like that tells me she’s creative, has an inherent interest in tech, and knows how to think outside the box!

HC Wake-Up Call: Democratic Rep. Accused of Sexual Assault Steps Down, Las Vegas Survivor Dies & Yet Another New Starbucks Drink

$

0

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

House Judiciary Committee Member Steps Down Amidst Sexual Harassment Investigation

Democratic representative John Conyers has stepped down from his position as member of the House Judiciary Committee after sexual harassment allegations made against him led to a congressional investigation, CNN says.

"After careful consideration and in light of the attention drawn by recent allegations made against me, I have notified the Democratic Leader of my request to step aside...during the investigation of these matters," Conyers said in a statement. "I deny these allegations, many of which were raised by documents reportedly paid for by a partisan alt-right blogger."

Several former staffers accused Conyers of various workplace abuses. The allegations came about from a BuzzFeed News report saying that documents from right-wing blogger Mike Cernovich included claims that Conyers requested sexual favors from former aides.

Las Vegas Survivor Dies in a Hit-and-Run

The Huffington Post reports that a survivor of the Las Vegas massacre was killed in a hit-and-run crash earlier this month. 52-year-old Roy McClellan was in southern Nevada the day he died, walking along a roadway in Pahrump. He was on Highway 160 when he was hit by a Chevrolet Camaro.

At the Oct. 1 shooting at a Las Vegas music festival, McClellan reportedly helped transport victims to the hospital and was later in therapy to deal with what he had witnessed. "I don't understand why he wasn't taken at the shooting, but a month later he was taken this way," said his wife Denise McClellan.

This marks the fourth known death of a Las Vegas survivor. Shortly after the deadly shooting, Dennis and Lorraine Carver were killed in a car crash outside their home on Oct. 16, while Kymberley Suchomel died in her sleep a week after the shooting.

Starbucks Adds Yet Another New Drink to Its Menu

Starbucks has been killing it with its new holiday drink additions, and now it's introducing yet another new latte. The Juniper Latte, which will also be available in iced form, introduces a blend of the flavors sweet mandarin and mulled spices. Starbucks has also released the Juniper Affogato, which includes juniper-infused Mora ice cream and a shot of espresso. The new latte choice will become available at Starbucks locations on Dec. 5.

What to look out for...

Happy Cyber Monday! If the crowds of Black Friday were just too much for you to handle, today is your day to embrace as many retail deals as possible. Keep an eye on Cyber Monday's website to find great deals that you may not run into otherwise.

Everything You Need to Know About Prince Harry & Meghan Markle's Engagement

$
0
0

Sound the royal wedding bells because Prince Harry is off the market. The royal redhead is engaged to his girlfriend of nearly a year-and-a-half, Suits actress Meghan Markle, Clarence House announced Monday. Here's everything you need to know.

When the engagement happened

Prince Harry proposed to Meghan Markle earlier this month and received her parents' blessing beforehand. The couple hasn't shared many details about the proposal, but Harry told the press it was "very" romantic.

When they're getting married

The pair plan to wed in Spring 2018, according to a statement released by Clarence House. The statement also confirmed that Harry and Meghan will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.

The ring

According to a report by ABC News, Markle's ring was custom designed by Harry, featuring three stones with significance to the couple. The large middle stone is from Botswana, which is a place the couple holds dear, and the two stones on each side are from Princess Diana's collection. The gold band of the ring is from Cleave and Company, which is the queen's jeweler.

The photocall

Following news of their engagement, Harry and Meghan made a photocall appearance at Kensington Palace in the Sunken Gardens Monday morning. The couple wore wide smiles as they walked together, holding hands. Harry told the press he knew Meghan was the one "the first time we met."

How their families feel about the engagement

Of course they're excited. A series of tweets from Kensington Palace and The Royal Family reveal Markle's parents, William and Kate, and the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are all very happy for Harry and Meghan.

A refresher on their relationship

Quite a lot has happened since Meghan and Harry's relationship began in July 2016. They met through friends, and their relationship became public in October 2016. Kensington Palace confirmed the coupling in November 2016 when Harry released a statement defending his new girlfriend. The comments and press attention became overwhelming for the couple and Markle's family, which is why Harry took matters into his own hands and requested privacy. In December 2016, they were spotted holding hands in London, marking their first appearance as a confirmed couple.

Trips to a number of countries—from Jamaica to Africa—occurred over the next several months, showing how serious their relationship was. In September 2017, Markle appeared on the October cover of Vanity Fair and told the magazine of her and Harry, "We're in love." In the same month, the couple attended the Invictus Games in Toronto, Canada, where they held hands and packed on the PDA.

Since then, they've been off the map…until today, when Clarence House confirmed that Harry has sealed the deal.

Congratulations to the happy couple! I cannot wait for this royal wedding.

4 Ways to Calm Your Nerves Before You Have Sex For The First Time

$
0
0

Several of your life’s biggest moments have been your first time doing something – your first word, your first birthday, your first kiss, your first love, and of course, your first time having sex. There is such an emphasis on your first time having sex in society that it can be a nerve-wracking experience because of the anticipation. Overthinking can make an already stressful experience overwhelming. Whether it’s your first time having sex in life or your first time with someone new, here are four ways that you can feel less nervous when it comes to that climactic moment.

1. Don’t go in with (high) expectations

When you’re with someone for the first time, it’s impossible to foresee your sexual chemistry, what things you are comfortable doing and how to pleasure them. You may automatically connect with each other in the bedroom, but there’s also the possibility that you are not sexually compatible.

To overcome the nerves you may feel because you’re unsure of the situation, don’t go in with high expectations. Don’t expect it to be a bad experience, but at the same time, don’t automatically think things are going to be as perfect and romantic as the movies.

Kristy*, a senior at Georgia Institute of Technology, shares her advice. “You shouldn’t overthink how something will feel,” she says. “Don’t go in with the mindset that it will be uncomfortable, that it will hurt, or even that it will be the best experience on the planet. Sex won’t be great with everyone, but you very easily could have the greatest experience too.”

Even if it’s a spur-of-the-moment decision or something you’ve been planning on doing for a while, keep your mind open to the possibilities of what’s to come.

2. Openly communicate

It’s critical that you let your partner know where your head is at, even if you feel it may “kill” the moment. It’s much better to let your partner know what’s up rather than sit in silence and suffer from what may be a lackluster or even painful experience.

Just as much as you have the right to let your partner know you’re enjoying (or not) the experience, you have the right to say no as well. Saying no will feel freeing and let your partner know that you are in as in control of the experience as they are.

Anna*, a junior at Kennesaw State University, thinks that you’re more prone to regretting an experience if you don’t openly communicate. “For example, being with a guy who is way too aggressive can turn something fun and enjoyable into a nightmare that you want to be over with already,” she says. “If you want your partner to take it easy, don’t beat around the bush. ‘Hey, can we take it easy now?’ is one of my go-to phrases.’”

If you like something they’re doing, let them know. But also let it be known if you are not enjoying yourself, even for a millisecond. Conversations before, during and after sex can be just as important as the act itself.

3. Be present in the moment

Take a deep breath and focus on what is happening in the present. Don’t think about what you think you should do in the next couple of minutes. Listen to your body and do what naturally feels right to you.

Don’t think of the end goal of an orgasm, but rather think of how important every moment leading up to it can be, too.

Maria*, a junior at Northwestern University, believes that overthinking will just multiply the number of butterflies in your stomach. “I think that it’s important that you don't have sex with a time limit,” she says. “If you don't feel like you have to rush to finish something, you feel a lot less anxious. There's less pressure to make something great happen when there's no deadline.”

While it’s great to be future-oriented, don’t think of what’s going to come next during sex. Appreciate every moment in between.

4. Engage in foreplay

You should not immediately jump from a kiss to penetration. To allow yourself to become comfortable and develop a rhythm with someone, you should engage in foreplay prior to the big moment.

Foreplay could include kissing, caressing, oral sex, biting and more. Once you conquer those events, your nerves should begin to subside and you will actually want the next step.

Stephanie*, a sophomore at the University of South Carolina, won’t have a clear mind until she develops a certain level of comfort and respect for her partner. “I usually get a little nervous and or self-conscious when I know sex is coming. But if I’m with someone who respects my wishes and desires and actively chooses to engage in things that pleasure me, it’s a complete relief.

A big part of your experience will be who you choose to share it with. Based on of your interactions with foreplay, you should know whether or not this is a person who seeks to pleasure you or is only thinking about themselves.

Remember, you should be the one actively choosing to share a very intimate moment with someone. You can say no at any time if the nerves become overbearing. If the thought of sex is making you physically ill or is mentally overbearing, know that you may not be ready. Remember there is no rush or deadline to meet. However, if you know that sex is something you want, your first time with anyone or with someone new can be an experience unlike anything you’ve been through before.

Kris Jenner Came REALLY Close to Confirming Khloé & Kylie's Pregnancies During KUWTK's Holiday Episode

Thanks to the holiday special of Keeping With the Kardashians that aired Sunday night, we may be one step closer to knowing for sure whether the Kardashian-Jenner baby rumors are true. In September, news broke that Kylie Jenner and Khloé Kardashian are both expecting—and that's on top of Kim Kardashian's announcement that she's expecting her third child via surrogate. Though we've gotten no confirmation from Khloé or Kylie, Kris Jenner dropped a couple hints during the holiday episode, leading us one step closer to the truth.

During the special, the family was decorating their homes for the holidays when Kris brought up her gift plans for her grandkids. "One of my favorite traditions during the holidays is to shop for all the kids for Christmas—and now, it’s extra special because I get to shop for all the grandkids," she said. "It never seems to end, which is exciting." Okay, this is subtle enough that it may just be in regards to Kim's baby, ~but~ she kept going.

At one point, the family was gathered together for an early Christmas meal with Kris's mother MJ and her cousin CiCi Bussey. They were all sharing what they're thankful for, and Kris got emotional when it was her turn to share. "I used to pray that one of you guys would have a baby," Kris said. "And now it's like a faucet that we turned on and it won't turn off, so the fact that I have all these grandchildren—it's been the most amazing journey to watch your kids [have kids]. It's truly the meaning of life." A faucet that won't turn off? That has to mean more than one baby from more than one daughter, right?

I'll let you decide, but it seems to me that the Kardashian-Jenner clan has more than one pregnancy to celebrate. Though I understand they want to keep things private, it's only a matter of time before their due dates come along.

3 Ways to Boost Your Focus During the Countdown to Finals

$

0

Every time finals week rolls around, it’s the same familiar scene: you pulling an all-nighter, pizza boxes covering the floor and your roommate annoyingly reminding you to start studying earlier next time. Even though procrastination feels like a staple part of college, that pre-finals cram is definitely not good for you or your grades. Don’t wait till the last minute to crank out your study hustle this semester––instead, start prepping for finals way in advance.

Sound like a hassle? Don’t worry, our friends at Red Bull are here to make sure that having a productive study routine is totally attainable (and actually fun throughout this tough time). By improving a few aspects of your routine, you’ll feel more relaxed and confident when that week of exams and essays rolls around. Read on for ways to boost your focus and ensure you feel prepped for the big week!

1. Prioritize topics that feel the most intimidating.

Come every exam, there’s always a few lecture notes or confusing textbook chapters that you’re blanking on. Instead of reviewing what you feel comfortable with, hit up the concepts you don’t know at all. Motivate yourself by laying them out in a study guide or flashcards, then run through your notes until all the material is familiar. When crunch time hits and you need to prepare NOW, this is a great method for getting all the class topics on an even level, and then simply refreshing on more comfortable topics as the clock ticks down to exam time.

2. It’s all about the balance.

There’s no point in keeping up a monotonous study routine that will only run you dry, so make sure to schedule time for your mind and body, as well as times for focus to power through finals.

When that next review flashcard looks bleak, put down the pencil to do something social or creative instead. Get up and take a walk around your dorm, chat with neighbors and friends, then come back to your desk with a clear and alert mind. When you can’t handle putting in another hour at the library, spend time doodling in a coloring book or listening to your favorite playlist. When you need to stay on top of your game, grab your fave study buddy, crack a Red Bull, then get to killing that study guide together!

Stay on top of your studies by giving time to your body and mind––and if you’re out of ideas for ways to relax, check out this playlist for some major inspo.

3. Explain concepts to a study buddy

Take your academics seriously, but don’t take yourself too seriously in the process. When crunch time hits, grab your roommate, friend, or even call your mom, then use them to run through your study guide from class. It may feel silly, but explaining concepts from your class out loud to others is actually a super helpful study method! Pretend your friend has never heard about this concept before; teach it to them as if they were the student hearing this idea for the first time. This puts you in the position of your professor––having to explain the key concepts, theories and more to give your “student” a complete understanding of that topic. Explaining complicated class material to friends in this way guarantees that you’ll be able to do the same just as well during a final.

These few small adjustments to the way you study will hone your focus and cut down your stress come finals week. The key is to actually commit to these practices instead of falling back into your old procrastination cycle––but when in doubt, there is always Red Bull to help push you through. Your complimentary Red Bull is only a few clicks away to help get you started. Let us know what else helps you power through finals!

Are Cheap Clothing Sites Like Romwe & Wish Worth It?

$
0
0

If you've been on the hunt for new wardrobe additions lately, you've probably noticed ads for sites like Wish, Romwe and YesStyle, among plenty of others. In the past few years, these inexpensive, China-based sites have gained massive notoriety for claiming to offer super cute, super affordable clothes and accessories, all the way from simple graphic tees to wedding gowns. Reviews always seem to be mixed, with some saying it's all a massive scam, while others can't seem to get enough! We had collegiettes from around the nation pitch in their two cents on their experiences with the Internet's cheapest fashion sites. Here's what they want you to know before you click 'purchase'.

Related: 9 Red Power Pieces You Should Rock This Fall

1. Check the reviews

One of the easiest ways to make sure you're not wasting your money (or worse, getting your bank information stolen) is to research reviews. Casey Brandon, a student at Gaston College, says that you can potentially find good things on Wish, but "only buy things that have reviews on them that say something other than 'so cute, wow!' and look for ones that have posted pictures of the product in the reviews. I'd still be super cautious with [these sites] because a lot of the stuff on there is kinda crummy quality."

According to another collegiette, some sites are better than others. "I've never purchased anything from YesStyle or Romwe because I've seen consistently bad reviews on these sites,” Chelsea Jackson, a junior at Iowa State University, says. “However, I've been using Wish and AliExpress for the last several months and have yet to be disappointed. Even if something doesn't live up to all my expectations, the most I've spent on the shipping is $3 so I can't be too devastated. As for AliExpress, I've been let down a few times. I also accept the fact that buying from sites like these is a gamble, so I don't spend too much money on these apps and I always search for sellers and products that have high ratings."

2. Beware shipping

So you've checked reviews and found a site with a pretty solid reputation. You've loaded up your shopping cart with loads of cheap goodies and you're ready to check out, but then you notice the shipping cost is sky high! Unfortunately, most of these sites don't boast a flat shipping rate. Since each product is sold by an individual vendor, it means they can charge whatever they want for shipping. It also doesn't help that most of these products are coming from Asia.

On a related note, don't buy from these sites if you're on a tight deadline. Since your haul is coming from places like China and South Korea, it'll likely take at least two to three weeks for it all to arrive at your door.

3. Order a size (or two) up

If you dig around these sites, you'll quickly find out that a lot of the clothes are one-size-fits-all. If that's the case, try to stick with sweaters or other slouchy pieces that'll be more likely to flatter most shapes.

If you are able to choose a size, Kayleen Parra-Padron, a senior at FIU, has a bit of advice. "I shopped at wish for a dress or two and, to be honest, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality,” she says. “They run extremely small so you always have to be careful and order at least two sizes up."

4. Skip the cheap makeup

"Never [buy] makeup products. I'll try beauty blenders but never like lipsticks or shadows, etc," says Briya Ware, junior at Elon. She's absolutely right. By purchasing 'dupes' of popular makeup products, you're opening yourself up to potential counterfeit products, which can actually be harmfulif used. Don't risk having an adverse reaction to that $5 Naked Palette dupe, and just go to Ulta.

5. Check the return policy

Stephanie Huynh, a sophomore at Lehigh University, says she "wouldn't recommend shopping on [these] kinds of websites mainly because a lot of them don't offer free returns. If something doesn't fit right or doesn't look like it did in the picture, you have to spend money to send it back. You're spending money on something you didn't want and it can become a waste of money over time!"

If you're worried that what you buy won't turn out how you wanted, do a test purchase. Buy one or two things and if they work for you, then you'll be comfortable using that site for larger purchases.

Bottom line? While these sites may be a great place to get a cheap, trendy t-shirt or sweater, you’re probably better off purchasing from a reputable brand. The often lackluster quality of these items coupled with ridiculous shipping policies often makes it more of a hassle than a steal.
