Lena Dunham Has Apologized for Defending a 'Girls' Writer Accused of Sexual Assault, & Twitter Still Isn't Having It

After coming under fire for defending a Girls writer accused of sexual assault, Lena Dunham has apologized for her statement of support. Entertainment Weekly reports that Dunham responded to criticism on Twitter after many accused the well-documented feminist of acting hypocritically once someone she personally knew was said to have sexually harmed a woman.

"As feminists, we live and die by our politics, and believing women is the first choice we make every single day when we wake up," Dunham wrote. "Therefore I never thought I would issue a statement publicly supporting someone accused of sexual assault but I naively believed it was important to share my perspective on my friend's situation as it has transpired behind the scenes over the last few months."

Dunham and her Girls co-creator Jenni Konner defended writer Murray Miller earlier this week when 23-year-old actress Aurora Perrineau accused him of having sex with her against her consent when she was only 17. At the time, Dunham tweeted, "I believe in a lot of things but the first tenet of my politics is to hold up the people who have held me up, who have filled my world with love." She and Konner also said in a statement that "this accusation is one of the 3 percent of assault cases that are misreported every year."

In her apology, Dunham said, "I now understand that it was absolutely the wrong time to come forward with such a statement and I am so sorry. We have been given the gift of powerful voices and by speaking out we were putting our thumb on the scale and it was wrong...Every woman who comes forward deserves to be heard, fully and completely, and our relationship to the accused should not be part of the calculation anyone makes when examining her case."

"Under patriarchy, 'I believe you' is essential," Dunham said. "Until we are all believed, none of us will be believed. We apologize to any women who have been disappointed."

Given the circumstance that brought about her apology, many Twitter users haven't been too accepting of Dunham's new statement. Actress Haley Ramm, who starred with Perrineau in the ABC Family show Chasing Life, replied to Dunham's tweet, "A perfect example of saying sorry just to say sorry. Too late...colors have been shown, babe."

On Instagram, Ramm also called out Dunham for "tearing [Perrineau] down" and acting against her August 2017 tweet about women never lying about rape.

Others responding to Dunham's apology also addressed the actress's misleading displays of feminism.

Perrineau has not yet responded to Dunham's apology or initial statement supporting Miller.

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe Has Been Given a Deadline to Resign & Will Go Through Impeachment if He Doesn't

Zimbabwe's ruling political party has fired President Robert Mugabe as its leader and has determined that he has until Monday to officially end his term of nearly forty years as the country's ruler, CNN reports.

Mugabe, who is 93 years old, is known for co-creating the ZANU-PF party, which aims "to establish and sustain a society that cherishes African values." Party representatives ruled that if Mugabe does not resign by noon on Monday, they will begin procedures to impeach him. Mugabe's wife Grace, who was seen as a possibility to step in as president if her husband was removed, has also been expelled from the ZANU-PF party.

Movement to remove Mugabe from office has stirred up since Zimbabwe's army seized power in the capital city Harare this past Wednesday. Now with the military in power, Mugabe has refused to sign a deal that would call for his resignation without being forced out of his position. On Saturday, thousands of protestors gathered in support of ousting Mugabe, but according to the Huffington Post, Mugabe's nephew has said that Mugabe is firm in defending his job and is "ready to die for what is correct."

The ZANU-PF party has appointed Emmerson Mnangagwa, Mugabe's former vice president who he fired earlier this month, as the group's new leader. Despite all signs pointing to a formal resignation, Mugabe addressed the nation on Sunday night without announcing his exit, Bloomberg Politics reports.

6 Things No One Tells You About Going to a Small College

$

In searching for a school that fits your needs and wants, there are many aspects to consider. If you’re thinking about applying to a small school, it’s important to look at the pros and cons.

Smaller colleges aren’t for everyone—just as large universities aren’t, either. While there are some more obvious aspects of small schools —smaller class sizes mean more one-on-one time with professors, there are fewer dining options, and so on—we’re here to let you in on some lesser-known truths about attending a small college. Here are six things no one tells you about going to a small school, from collegiettes who found out firsthand.

1. You will get to know everyone quickly

Naturally, at a small school, there are fewer students. This means you will start to recognize familiar faces almost right away. What no one tells you, however, is that by your junior or senior year, chances are good that you will know every single person in your class. Depending on the size of your campus, this phenomenon may occur as early as the first few weeks of classes.

“One thing no one tells you about going to a small school is the number of repeat faces you will see after about the first week of classes,” says Emily DiNuzzo, a senior at Pace University. “At first, you think there are so many people and then the entire world shrinks in a matter of weeks. Even if you don't know a person’s name, you know their face, someone else who knows them or maybe just some run of the mill gossip.”

The tight-knit community of a small college means that you will build strong relationships quickly. Be careful, though, because if any of these relationships end, you could be in for some awkward situations.

2. It’s hard to avoid people

If you get in a fight with your friend from class or break up with a SO that goes to your school, it becomes much more difficult to avoid him or her when you go to a small school. A more condensed campus means running into people over and over again, whether you want to see them or not. This is especially important to consider when it comes to dating your classmates.

“Tinder is not an option,” says Megan Wastal, a senior at Pepperdine University. “Chances are, if you see a guy on Tinder, you will also see him in the cafeteria 10 minutes later.” If you want to avoid the awkwardness, maybe think twice about flirting with that cutie who is in two of your classes. This is not always the case, of course. Relationships can definitely flourish at a small school!

Skipping class can also be tricky. “All of your teachers notice when you're not in class and are most likely friends with your other teachers,” warns Megan. This can be a good incentive for attending class, though—even when you don’t want to.

3. Being different can feel difficult

Small schools often have very distinct personalities. For example, Emerson College is well-known for its creative and spirited students. While everyone is unique in his or her own way, you will start to notice more and more similarities among the student body.

“Sometimes, depending on your school's area and typical demographic, it can be very hard to be different––whether that's your personality, your religion or any other unique detail of your life,” says Kristen Perrone, a senior at Siena College. “In my experience, nearly everyone is able to find friends similar to them but I think it's easier to feel discouraged about the way your personality is at a small school where everyone knows each other well.”

Kristen gives the example of being introverted but feeling pressure to invite as many people as possible to a party in order to make connections. Even if it isn’t easy, you shouldn’t be afraid to be you—especially if it means being unique.

4. School spirit is often expressed in nontraditional ways

While football games and fraternity parties may be the norm at large schools, small colleges often have different outlets for expressing school spirit.

“No one really goes crazy at the sports games,” says Megan. “The only people that attend are friends of the players, the rally crew that gets paid to be there and the opposing school.” Whether it’s an abundance of club sports or a large performing arts presence, you can definitely still find your niche on campus, though perhaps in a less traditional way.

If you are into watching sports, find out if you can film the games or help out the team as manager. Want to play? Try out for the team—and invite your friends to games! If you’re a natural leader who would rather spend time off the football field, consider starting an organization on campus or joining an existing chapter. From the school newspaper to debate team, there are plenty of options for every kind of interest.

5. It’s a short walk across campus

If you’re always late or notoriously bad with directions, a small campus can be a plus! You’ll pick up on the ins and outs of on-campus life quickly, and you can rest easy knowing you’ll always be able to get from one place to another in (almost) no time at all.

“The best thing to me about going to a small college is the ability to be able to walk to class when you wake up late,” says Stephanie Jackman, a senior at York College of Pennsylvania. At small schools, everything is often centralized, and it’s a quick trip from class to class, as well as to the dining halls, dorms, bookstore and library.

Keep in mind that if a campus with tons of big buildings and hidden hangout spots is what you’re looking for, you may not find that at a small school.

6. You will make your own kind of family

With fewer people in your classes, extracurricular activities and your dorm, you will definitely become close with other students and even professors. “When you get further along in your major, you practically know the people in your classes as if they were family,” says Stephanie.

If you ever need a recommendation letter or help with your resume, you’ll always have someone to go to. Plus, you’ll have close friends (or at least people you know) in every class. At a large college you may have tons of acquaintances, while at a smaller school you may have a few really good friends.

Every school has its own pros and cons and it can be difficult to generalize numerous small schools into just a few categories. Continue to do your research and make the choice that’s best for you. Wherever you choose your home for the next four years, we want you to be happy and to excel.

8 Ways You're Washing Your Clothes Wrong

$
0
0

Even the messiest collegiette knows that sorting your lights from your darks is the most basic rule of Laundry 101. However, this rule alone isn’t enough to keep your clothes in the best condition possible! Want the dirt on all the laundry mistakes you’re probably making? Check them out below.

1. Putting clothes in the dryer that should be air-dried

As you probably know from personal experience, there are certain types of clothing (and fabrics) that you just cannot put in the dryer without risking ruin. Why is this, you may wonder? Some fabrics have delicate fibers that can’t handle the high temperatures and tumbling motions of dryers.

Avoid tumble-drying your favorite sweaters, bras, silk clothes, wool clothes, and anything with embellishments. Trust us! You will avoid potentially shrinking, pulling, tearing, or completely destroying your staple pieces. For delicate items, we recommend hand washing with warm water. It is by far the best way to keep these items in prime condition!

2. Hanging knits to dry

For the same reason you shouldn’t put a sweater in a dryer, you shouldn’t hang it to dry, either! If you do, you will most likely end up with a larger sweater than the one you hung up in the first place ––or one filled with some funky hanger marks.

So, how do you dry a sweater? Simply lay them to dry or opt for a drying rack. Be wary though, heavier fabrics may sag.

3. Throwing your swimsuits in the washer

It’s no secret that swimsuits are expensive AF. Don’t ruin them (and waste your money) by washing and drying them with your other clothing!

We have a better alternative: Rinse your suit in cold water as soon as possible, and let it soak for thirty minutes if possible. Although this sounds tactic doesn’t sound the cleanest, it actually is! Cold water removes chlorine, perspiration, sand and other body oils ––all of which mess with the elasticity and color of your suit.

If you really want to use some form of soap, hand wash with a tablespoon or less of liquid detergent.

4. Tumble-drying dark clothes

Attention, collegiettes: you should always hang-dry dark clothes! Tumble-drying causes fading. Don’t hang them outside, either, because the sunlight can also cause fading.

You should also take caution when you are machine-washing dark clothes. Try to avoid washing these items too often. Instead, target small stains and blot them out with a damp rag and dishwasher detergent (seriously)! After you get rid of the stain, rinse the damp area with water.

5. Using fabric softener with your towels

There is nothing better than wrapping your body in a nice, soft towel after a shower. However, you should avoid drying your towels with fabric softener or dryer sheets! Believe it or not, they actually reduce the amount of absorbency a towel has.

6. Forgetting to clean your washer

We get it ––when you’re using a machine to clean your clothes, it’s easy to forget that the machine needs a cleaning, too! Laundry detergents can cause mold and mildew build-ups in places that you can’t see, so you should be washing your washer every few months.

Set your washer to the highest level and hottest setting, and run the cycle with four cups of white cleaning vinegar in the machine. Afterwards, run another cycle with one cup of baking soda. Ta-da, your washer is clean!

Bonus tip: To prevent mold and mildew build-up in the future, leave your washer lid open when it’s not running.

7. Putting your bra in the dryer

Never, under any circumstances, tumble-dry your bra! The heat will damage its shape, fabric and elasticity. After washing your bras (preferably in a mesh bag), seperate them from the rest of the load, reshape and lay flat to dry.

Also keep in mind that you shouldn't be washing your bras all the time. Use your own judgment, but we recommend washing after two to four wears.

8. Machine-washing your jeans

This one may sound confusing ––or downright disgusting–– but when it comes to your denim, step away from the washer! That is, if you want to keep your favorite pair of pants in prime condition. Each wash cycle breaks down the dye in the denim and causes fading.

So, what should you do instead? Turn your jeans inside out and freeze them overnight (yes, in your freezer) once a month to kill any odor caused by bacteria. If you still find that your denim has a strange smell, spritz it with white vinegar or vodka and hang it to air dry.

Don’t fret, ladies. If you find that you are committing multiple laundry sins, you can rest assured that they are easy to fix. Happy cleaning!

How She Got There: Jennifer Yen, Former Power Ranger & Founder of Purlisse

Name: Jennifer Yen
Job Title and Description: I’m a mom, entrepreneur and former TV villainess. I use to fight Power Rangers, and now I save complexions with Purlisse, my beauty company inspired by my grandmother’s asian beauty secrets.
College: Boston University, Marketing Major
Website: Purlisse
Twitter Handle: @purlisse, @jenyen1
Instagram Handle: @purlisse, @jenyen1

What does your current job entail?

JY: I’m a working, co-parenting mom. My job is to get my little girl to preschool, then I head to Purlisse offices in Beverly Hills, CA where I create skincare and cosmetics products inspired by Asian rituals. But my job goes beyond product development.  I also manage a team of women who are dynamic, driven and creative to help make things happen. I would say there are only two days out of the month that are typical.  Every day is full of fun, exciting challenges. We are never bored.

What is the best part of your job?

JY: The best part of my job is being able to create – create beauty products that women love, create jobs for women, create my life and my world.

What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

JY: I never worked in a beauty company before I started Purlisse. But I worked as a hostess at my mom’s restaurant in high school and I worked at many clothing stores in high school and throughout college.  The skills I learned from these entry level jobs are invaluable for what I’m doing today – understanding how to sell, how to satisfy customers and how to make women feel special, beautiful and confident.

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

JY: I didn’t have a real boss that mentored me. But here is a quote that I love from Socrates: “The Secret to Change is to focus all of your energy on not fighting the old, but on building the new.” This can’t be more true in my case.  But I will add this: You can not know or see the changes unless you are in the trenches.

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

JY: I made many, many mistakes. But the one that stands out is that I borrowed equity from my condo and I launched my company 10 months before the world recession. I created debt on top of debt.

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

JY: The world is changing so fast and it’s surreal to not only witness but also be a part of the change in my industry. We started out in retail stores; [the] economy crashed and we almost did along with most of the stores we were in. We had to reinvent ourselves and we are mostly an online e-commerce company.

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

JY: Does this person have a strong work ethic? Is this person genuine? Does this person’s energy match our values? Does this person have a sense of personal accountability? Does this person have a yearning to learn?

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

JY: Be bold and go for it. Make the mistakes when you are young. You have to know it’s going to be really hard but it’s not impossible. If you have the ability to suffer through the process (because you will), do it.

What's the one thing that's stood out to you the most in a resume?

JY: Their passion, but also when someone has jumped from job to job in a short period of time. This stands out as a red flag.

HC Wake-Up Call: Americans Watch Netflix at Work & in Public Restrooms, Russell Simmons & Brett Ratner Accused of Sexual Misconduct Together & KFC's Christmas Ornaments

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Americans Get Away With Binge-Watching Netflix at Work and in the Bathroom

At this point, people's Netflix habits are far from surprising. But in a new survey commissioned by Netflix, 37 percent of 1,600 Americans polled admitted to watching Netflix at work, while 12 percent have done so in a public restroom. The New York Times reports that the most popular places among Americans to stream outside of their homes are airplanes and public transportation. Call me crazy, but doesn't the streaming speed in a moving vehicle always stink? I'll stick to binge-watching at home.

Russell Simmons & Brett Ratner Are the Center of New Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Producer Brett Ratner has recently been accused of sexually assaulting six different women, while Gal Gadot has also reportedly refused to do a Wonder Woman sequel if Ratner returns to help finance the film. Now, Ratner has been accused of sexual misconduct once again, along with CEO and music producer Russell Simmons. The Los Angeles Times reports that a then 17-year-old fashion model has accused the men of sexually assaulting her in 1991. Ratner, then a music video director, and Simmons reportedly invited Keri Claussen Khalighi to Simmons' apartment after taking her to dinner one night, asking if she wanted to see a music video they had been working on. Once there, Simmons began ripping off her clothes, and when Khalighi asked Ratner to help her, he "just sat there and watched." Simmons then forced her to perform oral sex on him and later made a sexual advance on her in the shower without her consent.

Simmons has disputed Khalighi's claims in a statement, saying, "Everything that occurred between Keri and me occurred with her full consent and participation."

KFC Releases Its Own Christmas Ornaments

There's trinkets out there for everyone. For any obsessed fried chicken fans in your life, KFC's New Zealand locations are giving out sets of Christmas ornaments celebrating the fast food chain's menu. Each set contains ornaments of a drumstick, a package of fries, a bucket of chicken and Colonel Sanders' face. I'm sure that for some people, this is clearly the perfect recipe for a happy holiday season.

What to look out for...

I don't need much of an excuse to indulge in some desserts, but today is known as National Peanut Butter Fudge Day. Seeing as Thanksgiving is this week, maybe you can get ahead on your baking schedule by trying out a peanut butter fudge recipe today!

No, Pink Wasn't Throwing Shade at Christina Aguilera's AMAs Performance

$

Sunday night's American Music Awards featured many amazing performances from our favorite artists. One of the big moments of the night was when Christina Aguilera paid tribute to the 25th anniversary of the classic film The Bodyguard, singing a medley of Whitney Houston songs. During Xtina’s performance, as the camera panned throughout the crowd, Pink’s reaction was instantly criticized

Many Twitter users were quick to point out that Pink’s facial expression made it look like she wasn't enjoying Christina's performance.

Some people tried to link Pink’s grimace to the feud the two singers had over their collaboration on 2001’s “Lady Marmalade.” (Apparently they disagreed about who would get to sing the best parts of the song.) Just one tiny hiccup, though: The pop stars made up last year.

So, what gives? Pink shut down the haters by tweeting, “Yes. THIS. Christina f--king killed it tonight for one of our favorite singers ever. This about Whitney, and I am in awe of Christina’s talent. Show the clip where I’m in tears, you negative Nancy’s.”

This seems to, once again, be an example of the Twittersphere blowing something out of proportion. Not every camera shot or facial expression needs to be part of some overarching drama. Just let Pink and Xtina be!

People Are Accusing Selena Gomez of Lip-Syncing at the AMAs, But She Might've Had a Panic Attack Before Her Performance

Last night, Selena Gomez made her return to the stage mere months after undergoing a kidney transplant to help treat her lupus. During Sunday’s broadcast of the AMAs, Selena sang her new song “Wolves” alongside DJ Marshmello and a number of backup dancers. While it's simply incredible that Sel is up and performing this soon after a serious medical procedure, not everyone was impressed with her performance, with some Twitter users calling her out for lip-syncing.

But for all those who were calling her out, there were also people jumping to Selena’s defense. There's been a rumor circulating that Selena had a panic attack before her performance, which many fans have been citing as a reason for her alleged lip-syncing.

Whether Selena was lip-syncing or not, performing live can be terrifying—especially when millions of people can criticize you from the comfort of their couch. So, if Selena did make the choice to lip-sync, that’s her prerogative. But, in my opinion, one of the beautiful things of live performance is the authenticity that is present, even if the artist doesn’t sound perfect. Embrace your flaws, Selena—I’ll love you even more for that!

6 Things Your Period is Trying to Tell You

When that ultra-fun time of the month comes, we know the drill…or do we? Sometimes our reproductive system has different ideas. It can be hard to tell whether or not our vagina’s just doing its thing, or whether something is actually wrong. It’s better to be safe than sorry so we sat down with a gynecologist to try and decode our cycles.

If you’re dizzy…

One of the top searches related to periods -- behind “periods suck” of course -- is dizziness. Dr. Julie Chor, a gynecologist at the University of Chicago, says dizziness could indicates a couple of different things. It could simply be the pain or discomfort of a period, or something more worrisome like too much blood loss.  “Very bad pain can make you lightheaded because it triggers an automatic physiological response.” Dr. Chor says. “The bigger concern is if women are having very heavy periods to the point where they could be anemic.”

This, of course, begs the question: what’s too heavy? “There’s a cut-off as in a liquid amount, but that’s not user-friendly. I’d say if you're soaking through a pad every one to two hours for two or more hours, that’s generally a sign you could be bleeding to the point where your blood count could become too low,” Dr. Chor says.

If you have blood clots…

While maybe some people envision menstrual blood as a smooth stream, as with everything about periods, it’s a little messier than that. Sometimes clumpy clots are just a part of the deal, but hopefully not too clumpy. “Your period is passing the lining of the uterus, so you may have some small clots, but quarter size or bigger clots are quite large and could represent more bleeding than what might be considered normal,” Dr. Chor says.

As mentioned earlier, too heavy of a flow can drop your blood count to levels that can begin to affect your health, in which case you might want to pay your doctor or gyno a visit.

If your side effects are changing…

Maybe you never used to relate to your friend skipping class for cramps, but now feel the pain every month. Should you be worried? Probably not. “The body changes over time, so symptoms associated with your period can also change,” Dr. Chor says. A change in itself may not be concerning, but progressively more and more bleeding or lightheadedness, severe mood changes, or feeling down with depression symptoms could indicate something more is happening and you might want to go see a doctor.”

If you missed a period, but for sure are not pregnant…

Dr. Chor says some fluctuation in a cycle is normal, but if you normally have a regular flow, missing a period for months or being too late could mean something more. “In order for women to have a regular period, your brain, ovaries, and uterus have to be in sync. They communicate through hormones. Stress can affect these hormones and can, therefore, disrupt this communication.” Dr. Chor says.

Another more concerning cause could be polycystic ovarian syndrome, which causes constant high levels of hormone rather than the fluctuating levels associated with normal menstrual cycles. “Irregular bleeding or cycles, elevated androgens, like testosterone, which women also normally produce, or increased acne or facial hair, could indicate you have Polycystic ovarian syndrome.” Dr. Chor says. If you notice that you have this constellation of symptoms, you may want to make an appointment to see a women’s health care provider to discuss possible evaluation and management.

Dr. Chor also says women sometimes experience random, but totally healthy, anovulatory cycles, where the body just decides not to drop an egg that month. Certain methods of birth control, like IUDs, can also cause irregular periods.

If something smells…

Anyone with a period knows a certain *odor* comes with the territory. Things have scents, including blood and uterine lining.

“Odor is incredibly subjective. More often than not when women come with that concern everything is completely normal,” Dr. Chor says. “Sometimes that concern can be triggered by a partner saying something, but they have to be educated that the human body smells and menstrual blood can cause odors.”

She also says infections can cause a distinctly bad smell, so a fishy scent or a smell accompanied by green or yellow discharge, fever or pelvic pain means you might want to go see the doc.

If you’re spotting between periods…

Annoying? Yes. Dangerous? Probably not. Other than birth control, which seems to love messing with our cycle, other types of irritation can cause unwanted spotting.

“Sometimes certain types of infection, like bacterial vaginosis, a yeast infection or STDs can result in irritability of the cervix,” Dr. Chor says. “Sometimes it could also be for anatomic reasons, like polyps, which are like extra endometrial tissue along the uterine lining, that usually benign but can cause spotting in between.”

If you have weird discharge…

It’s not like our vaginas can produce the rainbow, but sometimes what we see isn’t what we’re expecting. But our vaginas, for the most part, know what they’re doing. “It’s completely normal to have vaginal discharge which is often your body way of cleaning itself out.” Dr. Chor says.

But why all the different colors? Red equals blood obvi, but what about everything else? Dr. Chor says before ovulation but after you bleed discharge is thin and clear, but after ovulation discharge becomes thicker and more white because of an increase in a hormone called progesterone. But she says yellow or green discharge with foul odor, itching or painful urination could indicate an infection, so it’s still good to take a peek every once and a while and confirm everything is A-OK.

Even though sometimes it may seem like our period is out to get us, most of the time (believe it or not) our menstruation is just biology. It’s still good to keep tabs of what’s up down-there and go to the doctor if something seriously seems off.

Rita Ora Auditioned for 'The Voice' in Germany as a Joke, But None of the Judges Recognized Her

You probably know the name Rita Ora, but how well do you actually know Rita Ora? Well, in Germany, the answer seems to be not at all.

You see, Rita decided to play a little prank by auditioning for the German version of The Voice. Rita sang her song “Your Song” (Quick! Sing it. Can you?) during the blind auditions. The British singer expected the judges to recognize her when their chairs turned…except the ruse didn’t go as planned.

Even after all four judges turned around (way to go, Rita!), they had no clue who she was!!! One judge even remarked how similar her take on "Your Song" sounded to the original. Rita kept the bit going, but eventually she had to reveal to the judges that she was, in fact, Rita Ora.

Kudos to Rita for taking the chance to laugh at herself, but next time, make sure you know your crowd—and they know you!

Another Woman Has Accused Sen. Al Franken Of Grabbing Her Butt During A Photo-Opp

Lindsay Menz, a Texas woman, reached out to CNN on Thursday saying that Democratic Senator Al Franken of groping her while they were taking a photo together at the 2010 Minnesota State Fair.

Menz told CNN that when she posed for the photo with Franken, he "pulled [her] in really close, like awkward close" and "put his hand full-fledged on [her] rear" as her husband took the photo. Menz said that she walked away after the incident and told her husband and parents what happened.

CNN gave Franken the chance to respond to the accusations and he said, “I take thousands of photos at the state fair surrounded by hundreds of people, and I certainly don't remember taking this picture. I feel badly that Ms. Menz came away from our interaction feeling disrespected."

In the picture, both Menz and Franken are smiling with their faces pressed up against one another.

Menz has said that she decided to come forward after Leeann Tweeden accused Franken of groping her in 2006. Those allegations came out last week in a blog post by Tweeden alleging that Franken “forcibly kissed [her] without [her] consent” along with a photo of Franken groping her in her sleep. Franken has since apologized, as ABC noted, and agreed to cooperate with an ethics investigation.

"The reason I want to say something is if someone sees that I said something, maybe it would give them the courage to say something too," said Menz.

Franken could still face further investigation of his actions by the Senate Ethics Committee.

Jacob Thompson, The 9-Year-Old Who Went Viral Asking For Christmas Cards, Has Died Of Cancer

After four years of battling stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma, doctors told Jacob Thompson’s parents that their son only had about a month to live in early October of this year. Looking to give Jacob one last Christmas celebration, his family began a campaign to gather cards to give to the 9-year-old Maine resident to celebrate the holiday he loved. Thompson received over 30,000 cards in just a few days — and his story soon went viral with support from many celebrities and communities from across the globe.

Sadly, the family shared the news that Jacob had died on Sunday with statement via Facebook.

“We hope that Jacob’s story and the enormous outpouring of support from around the world will have a lasting impact on raising awareness for this disease," said Thompson’s parents. "We hope that donations will be made, and a cure will be discovered as a result."

Michelle Simmard, Thompson’s mother, set up a GoFundMe to help cover her son’s funeral costs. They are $15,000 from their goal.

In Thompson’s final days, he received a visit from the University of Maine men’s hockey team and his family adopted a penguin, his favorite animal, on his behalf.

The Thompson family has recommended that “to make a donation in Jacob’s honor, please do so at Operation Gratitude, to a penguin rescue group, or pay it forward in your community.”

How to Decorate Your Dorm or Apartment for the Holidays on a Budget

$

As the holiday season approaches, it’s easy to get sucked into a never-ending Pinterest vortex of holiday decorations, party favors, clothes and more. Unfortunately, most of us don’t have the money for 10-foot artificial Christmas trees and twinkling crystal fairy lights, or the time to DIY reindeer heads and Christmas ornaments. So, we rounded up ideas for budget-friendly, easy and adorable holiday decorations that will make your room the envy of the entire building.

1. String some festive lights

Most of us already have lights hung up around our room anyways, so you might have this step completed. If not, stores like Walmart, Target and Five Below all sell Christmas lights for cheap. Use Command strips to hang them up, and soon it’ll feel just like the holidays at home.

2. Use window clings

Window clings are a dorm-dweller’s best friend—they don’t hurt the windows and they look cute on the outside and inside. “My roommates and I always hit up any sort of dollar store or discount store before the holidays,” says Amanda Goecke, a senior at Carthage College. “We always hang up different colored streamers and put those cute little jelly stickers on our windows.” You can find holiday-themed window clings at just about any store, but they’ll probably only last you one season.

3. Hunt around for a mini tree (real or fake)

If you’re living in an apartment, you’re probably allowed to have plants in your room. Those living in residence halls, however, don’t have such privileges. You can buy tabletop trees—both real and fake—at places like Walmart, Target and Home Depot. These might be a bit more expensive, but you and your roomies can split the cost if you really want to get festive. If that’s not an option, have no fear: “One trick I loved doing in my dorm, since trees weren’t allowed, was buying scented pine tree sticks from Target,” says Autumn Dube, a recent graduate from Emmanuel College. “They’re made to go in fake trees to help them smell real, but I would just hide a few around my room and it smelled like Christmas.” If worst comes to worst, snap a branch off a campus tree and call it a day. Charlie Brown made it work, and so can you.

4. Raid your family decoration box

Chances are, your parents probably have a huge box in the basement or attic stuffed with holiday decorations. Usually, not all decorations get used, so after your family does their decorations, look around for anything they left behind. You might find some cute reindeer figurines, stockings or even some extra ornaments. Score.

5. Make *easy* DIY decorations

Most of us have about five minutes to ourselves each week, so we totally understand the struggle of DIY decs. But hear us out—it doesn’t have to be that hard. Try snatching some printer paper and cutting out paper snowflakes (assuming you still remember how to make them from your third grade classroom holiday festivities) with your roomies and hanging them up around your room. Draw winter-y cartoons on any whiteboards you have or make festive paper chains to string across the walls. “Raid the $3 to $5 dollar section in Target! You can get a lot of cute, trendy things for less money. You can also find supplies for a quick DIY session,” says Teri Morgan, a senior at Chatham University. See? You could probably even do these crafts while you’re sitting in your massive gen-ed lecture.

6. Use random things as ornaments

You can find ornaments for super cheap at retailers. “We put up a miniature tree in our living room and decorated it with cheap ornaments you can also find at any dollar store, or with ones from home,” says Amanda. But if you want to add more creativity to your decorations, decorate your tree with random things in your room. “My parents bought me a Justin Bieber Barbie doll as a joke one year, so I took it to college and used it as our tree-topper during Christmas,” says Sarah, a junior at Temple University. “It was hilarious and everyone could see it from the outside of our building.” Have a cute hair bow? Put it on your tree. Too many highlighters? Put them on the tree. There’s no limit to all of the weird things you can use as ornaments. If you’re looking to stay festive, try buying a box of mini candy canes and hanging them on your tree or from your lights. As a bonus, you can eat them throughout the season!

When it comes to decorating your dorm room or apartment for the holidays, it can be tough to get that Pinterest-worthy look on a budget. But, don’t be afraid to get creative; a whimsical, fun room filled with mismatched decorations will still look great. Everyone will understand that you can’t afford to deck the halls with a towering tree and glass ornaments. After all, we’re all poor college students here.

Barack Obama Created a Meme to Wish Joe Biden a Happy Birthday, Proving the Bromance Is Alive & Well

Barack Obama's presidency may be over, but Obama Biden memes are forever — and in case you needed any further proof of this fact, Barack Obama himself is here to reassure you.

In case you're not familiar with the beauty that is Obama Biden memes, let us catch you up. Around this time last year, when the country was bummed (to say the least) after Donald Trump became the president-elect, someone decided to cheer us all up by creating memes celebrating the adorable friendship between Obama and Biden — naturally, they were an instant hit.

So, it made perfect sense that the former POTUS took to Twitter on Monday to wish his former vice president Joe Biden a happy 75th birthday in basically the best way possible — by trying his own hand at creating a meme. The result, as you might expect, is priceless.

"Happy birthday to @JoeBiden, my brother and the best vice president anybody could have," Obama captioned the hilarious AF meme.

I'M NOT CRYING YOU ARE. As usual, Obama's tweet prompted a flood of "Come back," and "We miss you," responses, and we can't say we blame them. At least we can take comfort in the fact that the Obama Biden bromance is still very much alive and well.
