Jane's Romance Novel on 'Jane the Virgin' Is Actually Being Published

One of the reasons why I love Gina Rodriguez's title character on Jane the Virgin is that Jane is a budding author. In my book, you can never have too many writers on TV. Now in an act of life imitating fiction, Jane's book Snow Falling will actually be published, HelloGiggles reports.

The novel came about on the show as a way for Jane to remember her lost love Michael. Taking place in 1900s Miami, the story is inspired by the characters' relationship, but what with being a historical romance, it also explores elements that Jane and Michael never faced together. After seeing viewers' response to the plotline, Adams Media, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, bought the romance novel to publish in the real world through the fictional company Lorden + Gregor. We can expect to see Snow Falling in bookstores by Nov. 14, 2017, which makes it a perfect Christmas gift.

"I'm so thrilled that Adams Media as Lorden + Gregor is bringing Jane's first novel to life and I can't wait for fans to get to read it!" said Jane the Virgin showrunner Jennie Urman ina press release. "Prepare to get swept up in an epic love story."

Mashable even released an excerpt of the book, giving readers a sneak peek at the story that promises "a time of railroad tycoons, hotel booms and exciting expansion for The Magic City." While romance author Caridad Pineiro actually wrote the book, Snow Falling will be credited to the fictional Jane Villanueva, maintaining the vision that readers are in the same universe as the show's characters.

With less than a month to go until this book release, I can't wait to read "Jane's" debut novel.

Resistance to a White Lives Matter Rally in Tennessee Led to the Cancellation of a Second Rally

A White Lives Matter rally occurred in Shelbyville, Tenn., on Saturday, attracting white supremacists, neo-Nazis and fascists before counterprotesters' heavy presence forced organizers to cancel a second rally later in the day. HuffPost says that the cancelled rally was planned to take place in the college town Murfreesboro.

An umbrella group of white supremacist groups known as the Nationalist Front gathered in Shelbyville alongside police and about 200 counterprotesters. Groups within the Front included the National Socialist Movement, the Traditionalist Worker Party and the Anti-Commuist Action, stating a mission to "turn the page on Charlottesville." The protesters were reportedly led by former Green Beret Mike Tubbs, who was once imprisoned for planning to bomb black and Jewish businesses. Speaking to HuffPost, Tubbs said, "I'm here to defend my heritage and my people against the forces of darkness."

According to The Chicago Tribune, rally participants and counterprotesters were separated by police barricades and were on opposite sides of the street with police in between. Although Shelbyville residents have actively opposed the rally for two weeks, rally participants continued with their plans to speak to their group before continuing to Murfreesboro for the second rally.

The Tribune says that counterprotesters, primarily from the group Shelbyville LOVES, teased white supremacists and played music such as Michael Jackson's "Black or White." The opposing forces continued to pick at each other until 1 p.m., at which ralliers boarded a bus to go to Murfreesboro. However, a tweet from organizer Brad Griffin, who leads the white nationalist group League of the South and writes under the name Hunter Wallance, revealed that protesting in Murfreesboro reportedly could end badly for the ralliers, resulting in the second rally's cancellation.

Before the cancellation, Murfreesboro businesses boarded up their windows in preparation for the rally, while the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro was even expected to cancel religious services for the day.

"It was an effective show of force," counterprotester Kubby Barry told The Tribune. "It was important to show up and show people that we don't stand for their message."

If there's anything that the second rally's cancellation teaches us, it's that people simply won't allow for this hate to manifest.

Miley Cyrus Says That the Demands of 'Hannah Montana' Were 'A Lot to Put on a Kid'

She may have kept quiet about her Hannah Montana past on her recent Carpool Karaoke appearance, but in a web extra from her CBS Sunday Morning profile, Miley Cyrus revealed how she feels about her Disney experiences, PEOPLE reports.

"I liked being in the Disney universe because I didn't know anything else," Cyrus said in a chat with journalist Anthony Mason. "I knew I was getting to live what I wanted to do, and I got to do two things I loved. I got to act at that time and I got to be funny...that was awesome...I think that now that I'm older, now I realize that's a lot to put on a kid."

It's no secret that Cyrus has seemingly only come to terms with her kid-friendly origins recently, having taken drastic career moves to distance herself from the label of a Disney kid. Now in an obviously reflective, calmer phase of her life, she recognizes that being Hannah Montana required intense demands.

"To have [me] go get [my] makeup done and also balance school and then also have me dress up in a wig as a kid, it's a little weird," Cyrus said. "It's a little Toddlers and Tiaras.

However, Cyrus definitely doesn't regret doing the series, clarifying in the full interview that she looks back on it positively. "I loved being that character," she said in the extra. "That's what made people love her. Honestly, music is everything and all people want to have is great music. For that audience...that was great music for kids to listen to."

As a bonus for those hardcore Disney fans, Cyrus even referenced one of her classic songs, telling Mason, "There's a song called 'Life's What You Make it, so Let's Make it Rock.' Never forget that—wise words. That's a good thing to tell kids."

I couldn't agree more. It's good to see Cyrus recognizing how Hannah Montana made her the person she is today.

No matter what year of college you're in, sometimes you just need a break from the campus scene. Returning home for a weekend can feel like returning to an entirely different life as you go back to your old town, family and hometown friends. Here a few things we seem to always forget but realize yet again every single time we visit home for the weekend.

1. There's something so comforting about being in your childhood bed again

2. Home-cooked meals have been greatly missed

Because Ramen noodles and junk food are becoming a pretty bad diet at this point.

3. It feels really weird to have to drive everywhere instead of walking

4. Weekend nights are pretty boring when there's nowhere to party

5. You've missed being able to see your parents in person

6. But you're having serious FOMO seeing all the snaps from your friends still at school

7. Running into people from your high school is not fun anymore

8. It's really annoying to have to tell your parents everywhere you're going

Nothing stays private when you're at home with your parents watching your every move.

9. Although you love your family, living with friends is so much easier sometimes

10. Not being around college-aged people 24/7 feels very wrong

Wait, adults and children still exist?

11. It's nice to have a change of scenery from your daily campus life

12. Having laundry, dishes and cleaning done for you is an absolute luxury

13. You get to go to all the special restaurants, hangouts and places exclusive to your hometown

14. Home is one of the only places you can truly relax and disconnect from your school stresses

15. Although there's nothing like home, by Sunday you're ready and excited to get back to your beloved campus

How She Got There: Bridgette Zou, Artist, Author & Illustrator

Name: Bridgette Zou
Age: 27
Job Title and Description: Artist, Children Books Author and Illustrator, Dreamweaver at Eleven Madison Park
College Name/Major: Washington University in St. Louis / Dual Degree, BA in Political Science and BFA in Painting
Website:www.BridgetteZou.com and www.ThisFeelsNice.com
Twitter Handle:@ThisFeelsNiceee
Instagram Handle: @TheChairmanZou and @ThisFeelsNice

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

BZ: No day is the same, but every day, I make art and try to find opportunities to exercise my creative muscles. Every morning, I will post one of my new paintings on my This Feels Nice Instagram feed, get coffee (crucial), then spend most of the day working on whatever project is most pressing at the moment. Right now, I’m on a deadline for my debut children’s book. Since I work alone, it’s important to me leave my workspace, so I’ll try to schedule meetings throughout the week.

What is the best part of your job?

BZ: Picasso said it best, but knowing that "anything you can imagine is real.” As an artist, this means that I have the privilege, and challenge, of taking a feeling, idea, experience, anything really and making it into something that I can share with others. Painting, and making art in general, is an incredible way to make someone feel a lasting emotion, without ever saying a single word. Right now, I love the possibility that my This Feels Nice painting project might inspire someone to pursue a dream or even just make someone feel good and smile. When someone tells me that something I created made them feel something real, something lasting, that means the whole world to me.

What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

BZ: I was a Studio Assistant at the National Gallery of Art (NGA) in Washington, DC. In high school, I applied for the National Gallery’s High School Summer Institute Program. It was an intensive program that exposed us to everything about the museum and culminated in the participants creating artwork.  At the end of the program, the directors noticed me and offered me a position at the Gallery. I held that job through the rest of high school, working on weekends and after school. I ended up being one of the youngest employees ever at the NGA. I did everything from facilitating the Gallery’s Family Programs to once assembling over 100 wooden boats. To this day, it was one of my most seminal work experiences.

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

BZ: I love quotes. It’s what my entire This Feels Nice project is based on. But if I had to choose, right now it’d probably be: "If you don’t try, you’ll never know."

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

BZ: My biggest mistake was making choices out of fear. More precisely, being too scared to do the very thing I knew I needed to do, which was dive head first into being an artist.  For years I ignored my art making. I think I’d known all along venturing into a creative career was what I was suppose to do, but because I didn’t know what my journey would look like, or how to even start being “an artist”, I suppressed it, ignored it, and then grew to fear it. When I finally confronted it head on, I realized that not only was it not scary at all, and that it is often our own imagined fears that are holding us back from doing what we want. From that day on I promised myself to never make a choice out of fear again, and instead I’d confront things head on, try new things and figure it out along the way.

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

BZ: Last winter, I attended a children’s book conference and participated in a portfolio showcase with at least 100 other participants. All of a sudden someone came up to my portfolio, started looking through it, and asked me if it was mine. I realized that it was Arthur Levine. He’s a legend. Have you heard of Harry Potter? He discovered J.K. Rowling and brought Harry Potter to America. We all owe him something for changing our childhoods. (Well, at least mine.) He told me my work was beautiful and wanted me to send him samples. I couldn't believe it. It was truly magical. (Pun intended.)

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

BZ: How quickly they respond to correspondence (while keeping it professional and typo free—please don’t misspell someone’s name). Everyone’s time is precious, so being prompt and efficient in responding will separate you from the rest. It means you’re on top of your game and ready to go.

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

BZ: Release your expectations and just start somewhere. Emerson said, “every artist was first an amateur”, and I couldn’t agree more. This doesn’t mean giving up on a big dream or having no standards. The first thing you make will not be the Mona Lisa, and you’ll inevitably make mistakes. Don’t give up. You should be striving for progress, not perfection. Along your journey, not everything turns out the way you’re meant to, and frankly, if things don’t go your way, that’s great. Because the world might have things you can’t even imagine in store for you, which is pretty exciting.

What's the one thing that's stood out to you the most in a resume?

BZ: I consider a resume in the same family as a portfolio or work samples. If someone says they want a creative career, whether it’s as an artist, writer, photographer, etc. the only thing that really matters to me is if they are producing work. Are they somebody that has a lot of ideas but isn’t actually creating any drafts or final work? It doesn't matter if it’s amazing or it’s awful, a pile of scrap paper sketches or ten finished novels. A title is a title, but your work—and work ethic—will speak for itself.

HC Wake-Up Call: Obama to Report for Jury Duty, Mississippi Students Can Read 'To Kill a Mockingbird' With Parents' Permission & Whole Foods' Mac & Cheese Bar

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Obama Is Just Like Us, Even When It Comes to Jury Duty

Former President Barack Obama is technically just an ordinary citizen now, and even ordinary citizens have to report for jury duty. The New York Times reports that Obama has been summoned for duty in Illinois and that, according to a court official, he will attend the session. He's expected to appear in November with proper security present before being evaluated to serve as juror in a civil or criminal trial. While former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton were ruled out as jurors after being called forward in the past, Obama's beloved status in Chicago could mean he has a "real possibility" of serving. Just imagine how fun jury duty could be with him at your side!

'To Kill a Mockingbird' Is Restored to Mississippi School Reading List After Being Removed

After removing To Kill a Mockingbird as required reading for eighth graders in a Mississippi school district, the Biloxi public school board has ruled that students will be allowed to read the classic novel if their parents give them permission. The New York Times says that following the massive outcry about the book's removal, interested eighth grade students will have the option to join an in-depth discussion about To Kill a Mockingbird with English teachers. Biloxi School Board vice president Kenny Holloway said that the story was originally removed from the curriculum because some of its language "makes people uncomfortable."

A Denver Whole Foods Will Launch a Self-Serve Mac-and-Cheese Bar

Whole Foods is already one of the greatest places on Earth, and one of its Denver locations may just become a heaven on Earth. On November 15, Whole Foods will open a new Union Station location that comes equipped with the chain's first self-serve, mac and cheese station. Um, yes please! While the store will also feature a poke bar and a 100-pound tower of cheese, its mac and cheese bar will include the traditional dish, pulled pork BBQ mac and cheese, roasted tomato mac and cheese and a vegan version of mac and cheese. Time to visit Denver!

What to look out for...

Halloween isn't until tomorrow, but we know that you've already been celebrating all weekend anyway. Extend the party spirit by indulging in National Candy Corn Day.

Paul Manafort & His Business Partner Have Surrendered Themselves Following Russian Probe Indictments

Following the announcement that the first indictment into investigations of alleged collusion with Russia during the 2016 election was filed, Americans were left spending their weekend anticipating more information on the sealed documents— and, on Monday morning, those details started to emerge. According to the now unsealed indictment, Paul Manafort, the Trump campaign's former chairman, face charges that include conspiracy to launder money, conspiracy against the United States, false statements and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts.

Along with Manafort, the indictment named his longtime business partner, Rick Gates, and George Papadopoulos, a former Trump foreign policy advisor who already pleaded guilty earlier in October for making false statements about his connections to Russian officials and for allegedly trying to set up meetings with Russian officials while working on the campaign. Manafort and Gates' indictments, notably, targets their work from before they joined the Trump campaign — focusing on their time as advisors for a Ukrainian political party.

Following the news of Manafort's indictment, Trump naturally took to Twitter to discuss and dismiss the controversy. He said "Sorry, but this is years ago, before Paul Manafort was part of the Trump campaign" and wondered why "Crooked Hillary & Dems" weren't "the focus."

He then followed up with a very chill, very presidential caps-lock plagued tweet promising "...Also, there is NO COLLUSION!"

Manafort and his lawyer were reportedly seen heading to the FBI field office in D.C. early on Monday and is reportedly expected to appear with Gates before U.S. Magistrate Judge Deborah A. Robinson on Monday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. EST to address the charges. This comes after Manafort was reportedly told to expect an indictment when the FBI raided his Alexandria, Va, apartment in July, according to The New York Times.

According to the indictment, Gates and Manafort are both accused of transferring large amounts of funds from offshore accounts without paying taxes on it and frequently providing false information to cover their trail. While authorities allege that Manafort had laundered more than $18 million, Gates is accused of transferring more than $3 million, according to the New York Times.

“Manafort used his hidden overseas wealth to enjoy a lavish lifestyle in the United States without paying taxes on that income," according to the indictment. "As part of the scheme, Manafort and Gates repeatedly provided false information to financial bookkeepers, tax accountants and legal counsel, among others."

While the indictments are certainly a boon for Mueller and his investigation, it remains to be seen how they will affect future probes into themeetings involving Manafort, Jared Kushner (Trump's son-in-law and advisor), Donald Trump Jr. and foreign officials during the 2016 campaign.

Riggs Left 'Grey's Anatomy' Rather Abruptly, & I Have Some Thoughts

$

0

Over the last few weeks, Grey's Anatomy fans have been left wondering if Nathan Riggs would finally choose Meredith Grey or Megan Hunt following Megan’s miraculous return to civilization. While each woman tried to push him toward the other, it sometimes felt like nobody would get the guy…until October 26’s “Danger Zone," when all of a sudden, Riggs was attempting to renovate a house in Los Angeles with the support of Megan’s son. Riggs’s departure from the show feels awfully sudden from the outside looking in—I didn’t even register that the end of the episode signaled his exit until later that night—but his exit was inevitable.

Martin Henderson, who plays Riggs, told Deadline that when he joined the show in Season 12, shortly after Patrick Dempsey’s departure, he knew his contract was short-term. So while some viewers were given a new hope for Meredith, Henderson always knew that the couple was never meant to be. And for those of us who are forever and always rooting for Meredith to catch just one break, we’re left disappointed once more. Why ya gotta play us like that, Shonda? Why?

With this being the last year of his contract, Henderson expected Riggs’s storyline would soon be wrapped up. “Bringing in Megan and tying up loose ends provided a reason,” he told Deadline. What? Contract renewals couldn’t have been the solution? But Henderson also told Deadline that he doesn’t do long-term projects, so chances are he was ready to leave, too. The good news? It sounds like neither he nor Shonda have closed the door on possible future projects. “If the opportunity came in the future with an interesting storyline,” he said, “I’d be happy to explore it.” And if a return doesn’t work out, fans might be able to see him again in another Shondaland show—this was his third, and he said that Shonda has already mentioned “she’d like to put me in a show with a gun in my hand." Officer Riggs? I can get behind that.

He also said that he feels bad for the fans who were rooting for Meredith and his character to make it. "But it makes for nice drama, and it’s something that Shonda does brilliantly: Dashing people’s hopes and expectations.” Couldn’t have said it better myself, tbh. When is the last time an episode didn't leave a gaping wound in your heart?

I've got to be honest—the only thing that would satisfy me would be to see Derek walk through the door and apologize for the confusion (screw continuity) because MerDer for life, am I right? I’ll never give my full support to any of Meredith’s SOs, but Riggs made her happy and, despite the fact that she is clearly okay with how it turned out, I am sad and offended on her behalf. If nothing else, I guess we can be grateful that he had a peaceful exit? For once, no one succumbed to terminal illness or heavy machinery or fire.

Call it childish, but no matter how old we get, we’ll never get tired of crafting! Not only is it fun, but it makes for great (and inexpensive) dorm room decor. With Halloween right around the corner, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to find some great DIY crafts to get our apartments and dorm rooms ready for October 31. Whether you want to prep for your own Halloween bash or just love DIY projects, check out these nine easy Halloween crafts you can complete in your dorm!

1. Candy Corn Mason Jars

What you need:

  • Orange, yellow and white spray paint
  • 3 Mason jars
  • Assorted black dyed faux flowers

Start out by spraying the entire Mason jar white. Once dry, spray the middle portion of the jar with the orange spray paint. Finally, spray the bottom of the jar yellow. Repeat on the next two jars. Accent with assorted black dyed flowers.

2. Blinged-Out Pumpkin

What you need:

  • Black spray paint
  • One pumpkin
  • Assorted craft jewels

Trade in the traditional jack-o’-lantern for this glamorous alternative. Simply spray-paint a pumpkin black (or buy a black plastic pumpkin) and add your favorite “bling” for some pizzazz.

3. Boo Jars

What you need:

  • Mini Mason jars
  • Candy corn (or other Halloween candy)
  • Ribbon
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Cardboard letters

Give your roommates a treat (not a trick!) with this cute Halloween favor. Simply fill your mini Mason jars with your favorite Halloween candy and replace the lid with fall-themed scrapbook paper. Accent with orange and black ribbons and cardboard letters that spell out the word “BOO.”

4. Halloween Wine Bottles

What you need:

  • Empty wine bottles (or other assorted glass bottles)
  • Various colors of spray paint
  • Painter’s tape
  • Sharpie marker
  • Mod Podge
  • Black glitter

Start by removing all labels and residue from your bottles. Then, depending on the type of design you want, tape off part of your bottle using painter’s tape. Spray with the color of your choice over the taped-off area. Once dried, remove the tape and decorate with black Sharpie. If desired, add black glitter by mixing it with Mod Podge and painting over the black Sharpie.

5. Halloween Milk Jug Ghosts

What you need:

  • Empty milk jugs
  • Sharpie markers
  • X-Acto knife
  • Mini lights

Light up your hall or living room with these easy-to-make Halloween lanterns. Start by cleaning out the milk jugs and decorating them with spooky faces using a black Sharpie. On the opposite side of the face, cut a small flap (about two inches wide and two inches tall) and string lights through the opening, adding five to seven lights to each jug.

6. Pumpkin Paper Lanterns

What you need:

  • Orange paper lantern
  • Green paper
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue
  • Green and brown pipe cleaners
  • Wire frame

Using the green paper and pipe cleaners, create a leaf and tendrils. Attach the leaf and tendrils to the paper lantern by winding the ends of the pipe cleaner around the wire frame. Create a stem by rolling a few sheets of the green paper together into a tapered shape. Attach the stem to the lantern using glue. Secure by wrapping another pipe cleaner around the base of the stem and securing it to the wire frame.

7. Monogram Pumpkins

What you need:

  • Monogram template
  • Pushpin or needle
  • Pen
  • Linoleum cutter
  • Keyhole saw
  • Candle

Cut a hole in the pumpkin’s base and hollow the pumpkin out. Tape the monogram template to the pumpkin using masking tape. Using pushpins, poke holes to create an outline of the letters. Use these dots as a stencil to carve out the letter, leaving about half the thickness of the translucent flesh of the pumpkin to allow light to show through. Light a candle inside and watch your pumpkin glow!

8. Chevron Pumpkins

What you need:

  • Masking tape
  • Scissors
  • Spray paint (any color)

Using masking tape and scissors, tape a chevron design around the pumpkin. Spray-paint the pumpkin using any color spray paint. Let dry, remove the tape and voilà: a cute and classy Halloween decoration.

9. Burlap Ghost Lights

What you need:

  • Globe string lights
  • Burlap fabric scraps
  • Twill string
  • Sharpie marker

Add some Halloween spirit to your everyday string light décor by wrapping burlap around the globe bulbs. Tie the burlap pieces at the bottom of each globe bulb using twill string and let the remaining fabric hang. Add a ghostly effect by drawing two eyes on each bulb with the Sharpie marker.

Now you just have to grab your DIY box full of Mason jars and spray paint and get crafting! Before you know it, your living space will be covered with just the right amount of Halloween decorations.

Some faces are just made for the camera. After seeing this photo of an absolutely adorable five-year-old Gigi Hadid photobombing a French Vogue shoot, we’re even more convinced that she was––and still is––worth all the hype. This past week the supermodel tweeted out a call to find the said picture, which was taken accidentally.

Within minutes the loyal Gigi fans of the world replied, and we are v grateful about the results.

We can’t even tell whether we should be paying attention to the Vogue model's animated outfit or to Gigi’s chubby cheeks! Looking at this, it’s hard to believe that the shot was taken "accidentally" when Gigi so clearly seems like the focus of it. A model since toddlerhood, this photo just reaffirms that the supermodel knows how to snatch us with her visuals no matter what age she is. Who knew this squishy-cheeked kid would grow up to become the queen she is today?

Selena Gomez & The Weeknd Have Broken Up Amid Reports of Selena Reconnecting With Justin Bieber

Prepare to bawl your eyes out: Selena Gomez and The Weeknd have broken up after ten months together. Multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE that the split has been coming for a while.

“She and Abel have been going back and forth for a few months about their relationship,” revealed an inside source. “It’s been hard with him being on tour and her shooting in New York. That wasn’t easy on them.”

The insider said the two are still in touch, but the breakup has not been easy. “It’s been hard for them to come to the realization that this is the direction things were heading, but it’s been hard for months.”

Rumors that the musical pair had broken up began swirling after some eagle-eyed fans noticed The Weeknd had unfollowed several of Selena’s family members and friends—including her mom and her assistant Theresa Mingus—on Instagram.

But PEOPLE's source emphasized that Selena and The Weeknd’s breakup doesn't mean Selena is back together with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber. As previously reported, the exes rekindled their friendship following Selena’s kidney transplant. They were first photographed hanging at Selena’s house with some mutual friends, and over the weekend they were spotted grabbing breakfast in L.A. and attending church together.

Selena and The Weeknd were first linked in January when they were spotted kissing after a romantic dinner. In the following months, they continued to add fuel to the fire, traveling to Italy together and going on a series of dates. They made their public debut as a couple at the Met Gala in May and began to show off their relationship with sweet social media posts.

It seems like their relationship may have just run its course, but what does this mean for Selena and Justin? Is there a Jelena reunion in the future? Only time will tell.

Actor Anthony Rapp Accuses Kevin Spacey of Making a Sexual Advance on Him When He Was 14 Years Old

On Sunday, Star Trek: Discovery star Anthony Rapp bravely revealed in an interview with BuzzFeed News that in 1986, House of Cards actor Kevin Spacey attempted to seduce him. Both actors were working on Broadway at the time, which is how they were first introduced. Spacey, 26 at the time, invited Rapp over to his apartment for a party, and at the end of the night, he allegedly picked Rapp up, placed him on a bed, and climbed on top of him. Rapp was 14.

Rapp claimed he was able to get away from Spacey and recalled not knowing how to feel as he walked home following the incident. “My head was spinning. I have a memory of turning around and [thinking], What was that? What am I supposed to do with it? What does it mean?

Rapp, a prominent theater actor most well-known for originating the role of Mark in Rent, had just moved to New York and was a couple months into the Broadway run of Precious Stars. Similarly, Spacey was playing a supporting role in Long Day’s Journey Into Night, his first big break as an actor. Both plays, and subsequently Rapp and Spacey’s performances, received significant praise, which is how Rapp and Spacey came to know each other.

Rapp said he never spoke to Spacey about the situation and never told his mother, who was living in New York with him. He told BuzzFeed News it was simpler for him to push the incident aside because Spacey was a relatively unknown actor at the time. Rapp assumed, or at least hoped, that he would never run into Spacey again, and tried to put the trauma in his past and move forward in his career.

Two years later, Rapp said he recognized Spacey in the 1988 film Working Girl. “I literally jumped out of my seat…It was this double whammy of, like, wait a second, that guy. And then it was coupled with the fact that his character was coming on to Melanie Griffith drunkenly. … It was a profound jolt to my system.” Spacey’s fame would only grow from there, and Rapp began to realize it would be impossible to avoid him. Rapp said Spacey showed up on the set of a film Rapp was shooting in 1993 to visit a friend, leaving Rapp feeling helpless and frozen. “It started to occur to me: What am I supposed to do if I ever work with him? What am I supposed to do? What do I do?!”

Rapp said the bravery of the women harassed by Harvey Weinstein compelled him to share his own story. “And not to simply air a grievance, but to try to shine another light on the decades of behavior that have been allowed to continue because many people, including myself, being silent. … I'm feeling really awake to the moment that we're living in, and I'm hopeful that this can make a difference."

After the BuzzFeed News report was published, Spacey posted a statement on Twitter saying that he does not remember the incident. "I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years."

Spacey also used the apology as an opportunity to come out as gay, which led to outrage. Many believe Spacey has turned the situation into a coming out narrative, taking the voice away from the victim and refusing to accept responsibility. Spacey has also received criticism for choosing to come out at the same time he's being accused of making a sexual advance on a 14-year-old boy—linking homosexuality to predatory behavior toward children, even if that wasn't his intention.

In the midst of this troubling news about Spacey, TVLine reported Monday that House of Cards will end after its upcoming sixth season. A Netflix rep confirmed to the outlet that the decision to end the series was made months ago and is not tied to Rapp's allegations.

5 Reasons Why You Might Want to Use Birth Control Even if You've Never Had Sex

With the recent politicization of reproductive rights and fears about the defunding of Planned Parenthood, words such as “abortion” and even “sex” remain controversial. But these words and their implications should not be taboos—and neither should birth control. The purpose of birth control is often considered as solely preventing pregnancy, but that’s not the only reason why you might be taking the pill. A 2011 study from the Guttmacher Institute shows that 58 percent of pill users use the pill for at least one purpose other than pregnancy prevention, with 31 percent of the 58 percent using birth control methods for cramps or menstrual pain.

Dr. Ana G. Cepin, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University and director at the New York Presbyterian Hospital’s Family Planning Clinic, says that it’s important to know that birth control is not a catch-all term. There are more options than just the Pill. “Birth control has long acting methods, such as intrauterine devices (IUDs), injections, implants, as well as the pill, the patch, and the ring,” she says. “All of these methods have potential benefits outside of just contraception.”

All of these methods also have different frequencies (e.g. while birth control pills must be taken every day, the ring is applied once per month). Regardless of the form, here are a few non-contraceptive reasons why you might want to use birth control.

1. It helps with irregular periods

Dr. Beverly Gray is an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University Medical Center and the director of the Ryan Family Planning Clinic. She finds that the main reasons patients use birth control for non-contraceptive purposes is due to problematic menstrual cycles. “Many women with irregular menstrual cycles may not be ovulating regularly,” she says. “By manipulating their menstrual cycles with hormones, you can normalize cycles.”

While the average menstrual cycle is 28 days long, cycles can range from 21 to 35 days. If your cycle is shorter than 21 days, it is considered to be irregular. “Women who have irregular, heavy, or painful periods might benefit from a hormonal method,” Dr. Cepin says. “These methods all work by stopping ovulation, so you don’t have the cyclic hormonal changes women have, which may be beneficial, for example, for patients with migraines associated with their periods.” If your period is irregular, normalizing it will help to stabilize some of the negative symptoms you experience around that time of month.

Samantha Burke, a graduate of Siena University, has found the pill to be a huge help with her periods. “It brought my period from 7+ days to 3-4, and starting my pack on the right day meant that I never had my period on a weekend!”

During the first month after starting birth control, you may experience some negative side effects, but as long as you’re prepared for them, you should be fine!

2. It can stop your period

You may want to stop your period for a number of reasons. One major patient group that wishes to do so is transgender men (those that were assigned female sex at birth and identify as men). If they don’t wish to have their menstrual periods, they should follow the same methods as cisgender women who wish to stop their periods, temporarily or otherwise.

Dr. Gray cares for transgender male patients who may still be menstruating. “There are times where I will use contraceptives to stop periods for that patient population,” she says. “The birth control methods we typically use to help stop periods are the hormonal IUD, Depo-Provera (contraceptive injection), or taking birth control pills continually (skipping the placebo pills).”

These methods can also be used for a cisgender woman who might want to stop her period. “Women might want to avoid having a cycle for convenience — for instance, going on a trip,” says Dr. Gray. “They may also have significant PMS symptoms or menstrual migraines that could be avoided by skipping cycles.”

A common concern about doing this is that it’ll affect a woman’s chances of getting pregnant. Dr. Gray says that that’s not the case. “Birth control pill use does not impact fertility.” So, if you’re interested in suppressing or stopping your period for any reason, however, the first step is reaching out to your doctor.

3. It reduces pain during periods

There can come a time, especially for some women, where dark chocolate and heating pads cannot decrease the debilitating pain they experience during their periods.

Dysmenorrhea, also known as painful periods, is the most common menstrual disorder, with over 50 percent of women experiencing pain during at least 1-2 days of their period, according to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dysmenorrhea is often caused largely by high levels of prostaglandins, chemicals in the body with hormone-like qualities. As their level increases in the lining of the uterus, pain tends to occur; however, as the lining is shed, the pain decreases. Birth control methods, such as the pill and the IUD, that contain estrogen and progestin hormones can help treat dysmenorrhea.

“The methods that work the best to help with painful periods would stop your period - the hormonal IUD and the injection,” Dr. Cepin says. “With the pill, the patch, and the ring, since your bleeding is lighter, cramping also tends to be lighter. These medicines can be taken in a continuous way where there is no withdrawal bleed - so you may not get your period - if you take that way under the supervision of a physician.”

Birth control pills with low doses of estrogen can help to stabilize your estrogen levels, because when one’s estrogen levels fall, migraines can occur. However, the pill has different effects on every user. If you’re finding that your migraines are getting worse, talk to your doctor about switching to a different type of birth control pill.

Your pain may be more severe. Endometriosis occurs when the endometrium, a layer of tissue that covers the inside of the uterus, grows outside of the uterus. This leads to pain, especially during menstruation. “For women who have endometriosis or pain with their menstrual cycles due to other reasons, hormonal birth control methods can decrease the amount of menstrual blood and the size of endometriosis implants,” Dr. Gray says. “It [hormonal birth control] decreases the inflammatory process that occurs in menstrual cycles that can increase pain and discomfort.”

Birth control isn’t a cure for endometriosis, but it can help with discomfort, cramping, and pain.

4. It decreases acne and excessive body hair growth

Breakouts are caused by many factors, but changes in your hormones is near the top of the list.

As a result, the birth control pill is great for helping with hormonal acne and body hair growth. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, androgens, male sex hormones, can cause acne by triggering oil glands in the skin. “Pills with decreased androgenic activity help decrease the level of androgens in our system, which tends to improve both acne and abnormal hair growth,” says Dr. Cepin.

Not all birth control methods are effective for treating acne, however. “Combined birth control methods can be used as a treatment for abnormal hair growth (hirsutism),” Dr. Gray says. “They increase the sex hormone binding globulin, which binds to the testosterone that circulates in a woman’s bloodstream. This has the effect of decreasing hair growth.” While your hair that’s already there won’t go, it can prevent future hair growth. In fact, according to Dr. Gray, “some birth control pills are used specifically for this purpose: “combination” oral contraceptives, that contain both estrogen and progesterone.”

If you want to get rid of a sudden breakout, getting on birth control might not be your go-to; there are some simpler options.

Emily Schmidt, a sophomore at Stanford University, has been taking the Pill for the past six weeks to treat hormonal acne. “I’ve already seen an improvement,” she says. “I used to get terrible hormonal acne on my chin and T-zone but fewer infections have developed before my last two periods.” However, if you want to treat hormonal acne without birth control, there are plenty of other ways as well that you might consider.

5. It helps treat PCOS, PMS, and PMDD

More serious medical health issues can also be treated by birth control methods. One issue that can be treated is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition that’s diagnosed for women with irregular menstrual cycles, a lack of menstrual cycles, or signs of excess male hormones. “If women don’t have any other medical issues that would be causing these issues, they receive a diagnosis of PCOS.”

“PCOS is not something birth control can necessarily treat, but birth control methods can help to manage some of the possible complications,” Dr. Cepin says. “One complication of PCOS is not knowing when or how heavy your period will be. Additionally, if you don’t bleed for a prolonged period of time, an abnormal growth of cells that line the uterus can develop, leading to uterine cancer. Taking methods that help regulate your bleeding is very important for women with PCOS.”

Mood changes from PMS and PMDD, a more extreme version of PMS, are caused by hormonal fluctuations right before or during the placebo week. “All methods that stop ovulation - the pill, the patch, the ring and injections - can help improve PMS symptoms, because your normal cycling of hormones is not occurring,” Dr. Cepin says. “A continuous birth control pill can help skip the side effects. Women who take a birth control with a shorter placebo period have fewer PMS symptoms.”

Birth control has expanded women’s opportunities, providing them with more stability and power in their lives. At times, however, there seems to be a negative connotation associated with birth control. Dr. Cepin believes that it’s less of a stigma and more of misconceptions around a lot of birth control methods.

“Women who are in need of contraception for contraceptive reasons should use it regardless,” she advises. “Women not in need of contraception but who have medical conditions should certainly do so under the advice and management of their physician or care provider.”

Moreover, birth control has different effects on every individual that uses it. The non-contraceptive benefits—a decreased risk of ovarian cancer, more controlled bleeding, reduced risk of period migraines, protection of the uterus—vary from method to person. As always, be sure to consult with your doctor about what’s best for you!

We should support all women’s decisions of whether or not they chose to use birth control. In this multi-factored decision making process, it’s important to be aware of your options and what your choices are—and that these options and choices continue to exist for all women.

Selena Gomez Opened Up About How Terrifying Undergoing Her Kidney Transplant Was

It's been over a month since Selena Gomez revealed to fans in an Instagram post that she'd received a kidney from her best friend, actress Francia Raisa, after her kidneys began to fail due to her struggle with lupus, an autoimmune disease. In the post, the "Fetish" singer said she'd be sharing more about her story in the months to come — and now she's doing just that.

On Monday morning's Today Show, Gomez and Raisa sat down with Savannah Guthrie to talk about their experience, starting with the moment Francia decided to volunteer to give Selena a kidney.

A post shared by Selena Gomez (@selenagomez) on

"She couldn’t open a water bottle one day,” Raisa told Guthre. "She chucked it and she started crying. I said, 'What’s wrong?' and that’s when she told me. She goes, 'I don’t know what to do. The [kidney donor] list is seven to 10 years long.'"

Even though Gomez at first, "didn't want to ask a single person" she knew for something so major, she eventually agreed to the idea — and after extensive blood and urine tests, it turned out that Raisa was a perfect match for her. (Which, by the way, is incredibly rare.)

While both of the surgeries ended up being successful, they weren't without some scary roadblocks along the way. Francia says she was required to write a will before undergoing the surgery, and following the transplant, Selena's new kidney "flipped," requiring a second emergency surgery that lasted six hours. "There was so much pain there," Gomez told Guthrie.

Luckily, the friends had each other to lean on throughout the six week healing process — which, spoiler alert, wasn't easy either.

"It was hard because you constantly needed to ask for help," Raisa said about the weeks following their surgeries. "I think one of the most humbling experiences was needing help to, like, put on underwear. We couldn't take showers by ourselves. I mean, it was a really brutal process."
