What to Do When Your Birth Control Fails

In 2016, Teva Women’s Health, the makers of Plan B One-Step®, sponsored a survey of 3,600 college students ages 18 to 25 to learn about the students’ knowledge of emergency contraception and how they feel about unintended pregnancy. Here are the findings we found most interesting:

  • Unsurprisingly, about 70% responded that an unintended pregnancy would be highly disruptive to their lives.
  • What’s worrying, is that despite the risk and obvious inconvenience of unintended pregnancy, 27% did not believe it was appropriate for a friend, their partner or themselves to take over the counter (OTC) emergency contraception (EC) after unprotected sex.
  • This showed us that there are misconceptions surrounding emergency contraception, especially that students don’t view “oops moments,” like unprotected sex or birth control failure, as reasons to use OTC EC. It made us realize that too many students are missing out on some basic facts about emergency contraception. So, here’s where we want to start.

At Her Campus, we want to help you understand when you should utilize emergency contraception, and why you shouldn’t be in denial of your risk of unintended pregnancy.

Think of this as your crash course for what to do if you have unprotected sex or find out your birth control failed.

Situations that put you at risk of unintended pregnancy

In the survey, Teva Women’s Health found that on average, college students engage in sexual intercourse 5.5 times per month*. Yet 64% of the 2,638 sexually active college students surveyed were using contraception inconsistently, and only 15% of those students sampled believed they were at high risk of an unintended pregnancy*. Anytime there’s the possibility of inconsistent birth control use or contraceptive failure, accidental pregnancy is possible. In those cases, it’s completely rational to seek out OTC EC.

Confused about when you should consider emergency contraception? Here are some common situations that call for EC:

  • If your regular birth control fails, like your partner’s condom broke or slipped off
  • If you missed taking your oral birth control pill
  • If you didn’t use any form of birth control (no condom, no oral birth control pill, etc.)

Think of Plan B One-Step® emergency contraception as a backup birth control method for those “oops moments.”

What you need to know about OTC emergency contraception

According to the survey, Teva Women’s Health found that college students who feel more at risk for pregnancy know less about OTC EC*, so it’s important to be educated on the real information.

Plan B One-Step® is the number one OTC recommended emergency contraceptive brand**, used by millions of women***. It is a backup plan that helps prevent pregnancy when used as directed and taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex or birth control failure. The sooner it's taken, the better it works. When used as directed, Plan B One-Step® helps prevent nearly 7 out of 8 potential pregnancies.

Plan B One-Step® contains levonorgestrel, the same hormone used in many birth control pills—just at a higher dose. It should not be used as regular birth control, because it is not as effective as using a regular birth control method correctly and consistently. Again, use as directed.

Plan B One-Step® is not an abortion pill. It will not work if you are already pregnant and will not affect an existing pregnancy. It does not protect you against HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Some women may experience side effects after taking Plan B One-Step®: such as a period that is lighter, heavier, early, or late; nausea; lower abdominal pain/cramps; tiredness; headache; dizziness; breast tenderness; and vomiting.

How to react after unprotected sex or birth control failure

The first step you could take after unprotected sex or birth control failure is to talk with someone you trust. Whether it’s your partner, a friend or a healthcare professional, it’s okay to seek out advice after an “oops moment,” because there is nothing to be ashamed of. Be open to their suggestions and opinions, especially when speaking to a healthcare professional about whether you should take Plan B One-Step®. Make sure to research your contraception options so you can help prevent unprotected sex or birth control failure in the future.

Safe sex is a must, even if you're in a monogamous relationship. Being safe is all about being honest with yourself and your partner, including having an open discussion about contraceptives.

Where to find OTC emergency contraception

Plan B One-Step® is the first FDA-approved emergency contraceptive to be available over the counter. It can usually be found in the family planning aisle at many retail stores when you need it—without a prescription or ID, and with no age restriction. A coupon and mobile rebate to help you save money on your purchase are available at www.PlanBOneStep.com.

We hope that we’ve helped you feel equipped with information, and that any misconceptions you’ve had about OTC emergency contraception have been cleared up. Education is the first step in making smarter choices, and choosing Plan B One-Step® in the future to prevent unintended pregnancy may be a smart choice for you.

Rose McGowan Claims in a New Series of Tweets That Harvey Weinstein Raped Her

Following her brief suspension from Twitter for tweets about the Harvey Weinstein scandal, actress Rose McGowan has returned to the social media site with claims that Weinstein raped her.

PEOPLE reports that once her suspension was lifted, McGowan alleged she was raped in tweets addressed to Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos. “I told the head of your studio that [Harvey Weinstein] raped me,” she wrote in her first message. “Over and over I said. He said it hasn’t been proven. I said I was proof.”

McGowan told Bezos that she had sold a script to Amazon Studios, but after sharing about her connection to Weinstein, the company planned to ignore her warnings about him. McGowan suggested in tweets that telling this story to the head of Amazon Studios led to the end of her deal with the company.

“I called my attorney and said I want to get my script back, but before I could, [Amazon] called to say my show was dead,” she said. “I am calling on you to stop funding rapists, alleged pedos and sexual harassers...Be the change you want to see in the world. Stand with truth.”

McGowan has been vocal about Weinstein's history of sexual harassment since the New York Times' initial report revealed that she was part of a 1997 settlement addressing Weinstein's hotel room encounter with an executive producer. She has come forward about her past with Weinstein alongside several other actresses, including Cara Delevingne, Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow.

McGowan also retweeted a message promoting women's all-day boycott of Twitter this Friday. #WomenBoycottTwitter has been organized "in protest of women's voices being silenced."

Props to McGowan for helping to lead this fight against sexual harassment in the film industry. It's clear that she won't let anything keep her silent.

6 Reasons Avoiding Workplace Drama is Worth It

$

0

Most of us thought that drama ended the day we graduated high school, but we all found out that wasn't entirely true. Drama has the potential to carry into college, and even worse, it can follow you after you graduate college and start your career. Avoiding drama in the workplace might not be an easy task, but we'll show you why it's completely worth it.

1. You'll be a better team player

A big skill that employers look for is the ability for employees to be team players and work well within a group. The last thing you want to do is have coworkers associate you with drama while you're at work.

"If you ever have to work on a project with your coworkers, it's best to not be caught in any petty drama that will hinder the process," says Kaitlin Manion, a graduate student at Temple University. "If you're not on anyone's 'side,' it'll make you look like a better leader."

Not only will staying neutral in the workplace make you look trustworthy, but you'll be able to better focus on your work and developing positive relationships with your coworkers and your boss.

2. You'll avoid having a bad reputation at work

The last thing you want to be known for at work is starting drama or being at the center of workplace incidents. Avoiding drama at work is an integral part of making sure that you're representing yourself in the best light while you're at your 9-to-5.

You don't want to have a bad reputation and you definitely don't want your coworkers to feel like you're distracted by petty arguments when you're at work.

3. You'll be more focused on work

If you want a successful career in which you'll move up the ladder quickly, then drama should have no place in your day-to-day agenda. The more you stay away from it, the better employee you'll be and the better you'll do your job. Since you're not worrying about office chatter and gossip from your coworkers, you'll have more time to focus on your work and get things done during the day.

Related: 4 Times You Shouldn't Apologize at Work

4. You'll be less stressed

If you've ever found yourself in a drama-filled situation, then you know just how much it can take out of you mentally and emotionally. You may find yourself thinking about how you should handle the situation and why there is even drama in the first place. Being involved in drama can be an all-encompassing (and uncomfortable!) feeling. Imagine feeling that way at work and potentially bringing that drama home to think about. Not a good combination, especially if you're coming home from a long day in the office and you're trying to relax.

5. You'll better your chances for a positive recommendation

If you're thinking about leaving your current job for a better opportunity, and you need recommendations from former co-workers and supervisors, the fact that you haven't been involved in anything negative while in the office is only going to benefit you. Whoever is writing the recommendation for you will only remember the good things and portray you in a positive light rather than think about that time you were involved in a workplace altercation. You never want workplace drama to overshadow all of your hard work and effort.

6. You may be considered for a raise or promotion

One of the benefits of not involving yourself in workplace drama is the simple fact that you may be putting yourself in a better position to receive a raise or promotion. Employers want to keep people who are able to do their work well and who are equally able to get along with their coworkers and anyone else they may come into contact with.

"When it comes to making promotion decisions, current performance and competency level are not the only factors that are taken into consideration," says Salvatore Fusari, a human resources manager at a pharmaceutical company. "Companies will look to reward employees whose behaviors are in line with company values."

Leave the drama to the high school kids and do your best to remove yourself from any workplace situation in which drama may arise. It's not worth the stress to be involved in drama while you're working your way towards a successful career.

Blake Lively Was Sexually Harassed by a Makeup Artist Who Filmed Her While She Was Sleeping

Blake Lively has come forward with her own experience of sexual harassment in Hollywood. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Blake detailed her encounter with an inappropriate makeup artist on set.

"He was saying things inappropriately, insisting on putting my lipstick on with his finger,” Lively said. “I was sleeping one night on location and I woke up and he was filming me. I was clothed, but it was a very voyeuristic, terrifying thing to do." No one should have to tell you that that's seriously creepy, yet Blake said the reaction when she reported the incident wasn't what she expected.

"Finally, after three months of complaining, they called me into my trailer and said, ‘We need to talk to you,'” she said. "I thought, ‘Well finally, they’re going to do something about this man who I had to have touching me all day.’ And they said, ‘Your dog left a poop behind the toilet in your dressing room and our janitor had to pick it up. And this is very serious and we can't have this happen again.’” Something is seriously f--ked up in the world when people think a dog's accident is more important than harassment.

Only after Blake went to her own lawyer did the makeup artist get fired. But even after all of that, the unit manager wrote him a letter of recommendation, "because nobody wanted there to be bad blood,” Lively said. So this makeup artist probably still works in the industry, which is unsettling to say the least.

Blake has already spoken out about sexual harassment earlier this week. The actress told The Hollywood Reporter that Harvey Weinstein never sexually harassed her, but she reminded us that sexual harassment isn't just exclusive to this man or Hollywood. "It happens to women all over the place, all the time, to the point where women don't even think that this is a real assault," she said. "I've had plenty of things happen to me whether it be trying on a dress for prom at some clothing store, to a director being inappropriate, to a guy walking down the street where you don't think, 'Oh well, that wasn't actually sexual assault—this guy just, like, grabbed my butt.'"

"The number one thing that can happen is that people who share their stories, people have to listen to them and trust them, and people have to take it seriously," Blake also said. "As important as it is to remain furious about this, it's important to also say that this exists everywhere so remember to look everywhere. This isn't a single incident. This cannot happen, this should not happen, and it happens in every single industry."

Many people have said the allegations against Weinstein are examples of a man in power taking advantage of that power to abuse women. That's definitely the case, but Blake's story and commentary remind us that sexual harassment can happen anywhere to anyone, and it's everyone's responsibility to listen and respond to those who share their experiences.

Mindy Kaling Actually Doesn't Mind That Oprah Blabbed About Her Pregnancy

In case you were wondering how Mindy Kaling felt after Oprah Winfrey told the world that she was pregnant before Mindy herself had officially confirmed the news, turns out she wasn't really upset. Rumors had been swirling that Mindy was expecting her first child, but Oprah was the first named source to officially say that she was pregnant.

Oprah was with Mindy at the D23 expo to promote their film A Wrinkle in Time when Oprah randomly shared the news. “That’s when she told me. My mouth dropped,” Winfrey told People“‘What did you just say?’ She said, ‘Oh, Oprah, I don’t think you know. I’m 5 months pregnant.’”

During the expectant mother's appearance on The Ellen Show FridayEllen naturally brought up the fact that Oprah was the one to spill the beans. "You were going to keep it a secret, but Oprah opened her big mouth."

"If anyone is going to announce big news about your private life, Oprah Winfrey is the person," Mindy responded. "You can't complain that much about it. And you can't be like, 'Hey, Oprah, zip it'—because she's almost like a religious figure."

Apparently Mindy never told Oprah that she wasn't supposed to mention it either. "I think I learned a long time ago that it's probably not a good idea to reprimand Oprah," Mindy said. "At a certain point I was like, 'You can't take it back,' so I thought, 'You know what? There are worse things.'"

Plus, it'll be a great story to tell her daughter (yes, Mindy confirmed she's having a girl!). "If there’s one person I have to tell my daughter about that revealed her existence to the world, Oprah is pretty good," Mindy said. Very true, Mindy.

Rachel Lindsay Had ~Thoughts~ About an Article That Said She 'Failed' at Finding the Love of Her Life

Rachel Lindsay has made it very clear that if you say something about her that she doesn't agree with, you're going to hear from her. The latest instance was in response to a BET article in which a reporter wrote, "Lindsay stunned America by nailing the title of America’s first Black Bachelorette and then epicly failing at scoring the love of her life." Bold words for someone who doesn't know Rachel personally, which the former Bachelorette was quick to point out on Twitter.

"Come on now @BET," she wrote. "We're still on this. If u want to write an article about me then sit down and interview me. Get to know me off camera too."

The article in question was about Rachel's second runner-up, Eric Bigger, but it seems there's no bad blood between them. She continued in another tweet, "But if @BET has to write a negative article about me to tear me down in order to build Eric up, then I'll take that. He is a great guy!"

That doesn't mean she's okay with the article's contents, though. "U could have written a positive article about w/o bashing my relationship and me. Your negativity took away from the positivity that is Eric," she concluded.

Rachel and her fiancé, Bryan Abasolo, have pretty much been on the defensive since the Bachelorette finale aired and fan favorites Eric Bigger and Peter Krause were sent home. But Rachel has always stood up to those criticizing her decision and relationship.

The day after the finale aired, Rachel told us during a press call that Bryan is sincere, despite viewers thinking otherwise. "I could understand how maybe someone said [he wasn’t sincere] on the first night, but watching Bryan throughout the season, it baffles my mind how you could still say that he’s not sincere. I mean, this is the most sincere and genuine man that I know."

Kudos to Rachel for sticking to her guns. It was reality TV after all, so what we saw probably wasn't the whole story. As long as she's happy, who are we to judge?

This High School In South Dakota Cancelled Their Homecoming Game After Racist Vandalism

A high school in South Dakota has canceled its homecoming because of a video showing students destroying an old car with "Go back to the Rez" painted on the side, according to CBS News.

Pine Ridge High School located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, was scheduled to play against Sturgis Brown High School. But the game was canceled Thursday after a video of Sturgis students surfaced.

"It's the worst day I've ever had," Sturgis Principal Pete Wilson told the Associated Press. According to the principal, the discipline will be carried out "after we figure out everything."

Pine Ridge Principal Michael Carlow also praised Wilson for taking action against the hate crime.

The car smash has been a tradition in the high school for some time, minus the racist comments spray painted on the car, of course. Students would beat up old cars painted in the opposing school colors to fundraise for homecoming week.

According to CBS affiliate KELO-TV, football reporter Matt Kerney says it's a few bad apples that ruined the pie for the whole town. However, there is no way to know if such racially inflammatory ideas are shared with more than just the three students in the picture.

As of right now, Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater says "there's not anything criminal," but that officials are still "looking through it thoroughly before we make judgment."

About 700 students attended an assembly at Sturgis early Thursday morning to discuss the hate crime and learn cultural awareness.

Even the school board apologized on behalf of the student's careless actions, and voted 8-0 to cancel the game and all other homecoming activities for the sake of student's safety.

"We do not support, teach nor endorse the inappropriate behaviors and actions that occurred Wednesday evening. We are appalled and disgusted by the racist comments that appeared on social media," they said in a statement with The Rapid City Journal. While it's expected that none of the schools teach that kind of behavior, it's important that they take the responsibility of removing any existing hurtful mindsets. This canceled homecoming game will go down in history: Pine Ridge 2, Sturgis 0.

A South Carolina Restaurant Owner Allegedly Abused & Enslaved a Mentally Disabled Black Worker

A South Carolina man has been accused of holding a mentally disabled man as a slave through the use of psychological and mental abuse in order to force him into labor at the restaurant he managed, KTLA 5 reported.

An indictment released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Justice states that Bobby Paul Edwards, 52, is accused of “using force, physical restraint, and coercion” among other equally horrifying tactics, forcing the man to work there for five years. It began in September 2009 at J&J Cafeteria in Conway, which was relatively close to the famous South Carolina resort Myrtle Beach, according to officials.

The DOJ hasn’t officially released the name of the victim. However, federal prosecutors told the Washington Post that he is a 39-year-old black man named John Christopher Smith, and he has a mild cognitive disability.

Smith had already been working at the restaurant for more than 20 years as a buffet cook when Edwards became the manager. In a previous lawsuit filed against Edwards, Smith said the enjoyable job “turned into a nightmare.” Smith alleged that Edwards “would use racial slurs against him, behaved like a slave driver and assaulted him away from customers’ eyes in the freezer.” And what’s worse is that those are just a handful of many frightening allegations.

People on the J&J Yelp page have accused the restaurant of “improper dealings” with employees multiple times, dating all the way back to 2014. Smith himself told South Carolina TV station WMBF that he had been abused and tortured for several years by Edwards. It was then that people came together to help him leave the restaurant and find somewhere safe to live and work. Edwards was arrested around that time, but charged with 2nd-degree assault, which is only a misdemeanor.

Edwards has had several run-ins with the law, but this is the most serious one. His long rap sheet, according to Horry County court records, contains charges of burglary, assault, shoplifting and resisting arrest.

Edwards was arrested Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to forced labor, according to court records. He is currently charged with one count of “attempt to establish peonage, slavery, involuntary servitude or human trafficking.” If he is convicted on that charge, prosecutors say he’s looking at a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and mandatory restitution.

The FBI investigation on J&J is ongoing.

Is Trump's Threat To Go After Broadcast Licenses Really a Thing?

$
0
0

NBC News has managed to provoke President Trump’s rage again this week with their reporting -- enough that he has raised the question of revoking their broadcast license more than once, according to The Washington Post.

The kindling for this particular fire was a report made by NBC News early Wednesday that Trump pushed hard for a significant expansion of the U.S. nuclear arsenal this past July. That request reportedly was the reason Secretary of State Rex Tillerson would later call Trump a “moron.”

POTUS did what he normally does when upset: He tweeted Wednesday denying the report. According to him, it’s “fake news” and “pure fiction,” and he wondered if NBC’s broadcast license could be challenged. The initial tweet wasn’t the last thing he had to say on the matter, either. At a news conference with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trump went on to say that, “It’s frankly disgusting the way the press is able to write whatever they want to write, and people should look into it.”

A few hours later, he decided he still wasn’t done with the matter, and tweeted again.

Can the president remove a network’s broadcast license? Long story short: No. No, he can’t.

The Washington Post’s podcast Can He Do That?, which is dedicated to looking into and explaining the powers and limitations of the U.S. president, examined this particular moment. They noted that, first and foremost, comments about restricting the press because something is, according to Trump, “fake news,” is dangerous because “they undermine the idea that this is one of our most precious freedoms.”

They also concluded that the idea of the President having the authority to revoke the broadcasting license of a network flies directly in the face of what the Constitution lays down as fundamental rights. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) does have the right to revoke or restrict broadcast licenses if a news network does something that is outright illegal, “but that’s not the power of the president.”

Trump isn’t the first president to want to limit the abilities of news networks. President Nixon threatened the FCC not renew the licenses of TV stations in Florida that were owned by the Washington Post. For Nixon, however, it was more a case of specific retribution against the Post and not him wanting to put an end to the investigations against him by shutting down those TV stations. He also talked about it behind closed doors, while Trump is more or less shouting it from the rooftops.

However, the most important part of all of this that Trump seems to have fundamentally misunderstood, as pointed out by Andrew Jay Schwartzman of the Institute for Public Representation of Georgetown University Law Center, is that networks are not licensed at all. It’s the individual TV stations and local newspapers that are licensed. Furthermore, the FCC is an independent agency containing no more than three members from any one political party and does not have to answer to the president for anything, ever. He chose one of them to be the chairman, but that’s as far as the reach of his power goes.

Like so many of Trump’s other statements, this one is also made of mostly hot air and impotent rage.

Here's What We Actually Know About The Yellowstone 'Supervolcano'& Whether You Should Panic or Not

$

Unless you've been living safely under a rock this past year, you probably know about Yellowstone National Park's "supervolcano"—and its threat to the planet whenever it decides to erupt. (Casual.)

Well, guess what? IT MIGHT ERUPT WITHIN THE NEXT COUPLE OF DECADES, according to CBS News

Yea, that's right. You could still be alive when it happens.

According to Researchers at Arizona State University, the "supervolcano" sleeping underneath Yellowstone is building pressure much faster than expected. Scientists believed that the volcano wouldn't erupt for the next thousands of years. PLOT TWIST: it's expected to erupt as early as the 2030's.

The volcano has the potential to expel nearly 250 cubic miles of molten rock and ash in just one blast. CBS reported back in 2015 that there have only been three giant eruptions in the last two million years. And they even said if Yellowstone's eruption is anything like the last eruption which happened over 600,00 years ago, it will encircle the earth in volcanic ash and material. What can that mean for the planet and us? Well, I'm glad you asked.

According to Yahoo! back in 2014, the after-effects of the volcano could cover states like Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and Colorado in three feet of ash. The Midwest would also be looking at a mix of splintered rocks and glass. The materials spewed out by the volcano have the potential to kill plants and animals, crush roofs and short out electrical equipment. According to Business Insider, the eruption wouldn't wipe out human life, but it could mean a whole bunch of harmful gasses that could cause global cooling and acid rain.

Here's a map that shows the areas that would be affected the most, according to Science News:

There is a tiny glimmer of hope: NASA has been working out ways to cool down the time bomb, according to the BBC. They want to drill into the volcano and pump high pressured water to extract heat from it. Not only do some people think it's far-fetched, but they also think it's way too expensive at $3.46 billion.

"The long-term benefit is that you prevent a future "supervolcano" eruption which would devastate humanity." said NASA's Brian Wilcox. At the end of the day, though, this is all still an estimation.

Try not to be too worried until the experts are as sure as they can be about this Yellowstone phenomenon.

Trump Is Threatening to Pull the U.S. Out of the Iran Deal

President Donald Trump denounced the Iran nuclear deal Friday and threatened to pull out of it if Congress does not toughen the accord.

“As I have said many times, the Iran deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into,” Trump said during a speech at the White House.

The Iran deal, officially named the “Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action,” was an agreement between Iran and several other world powers to reduce the production of two elements used to make nuclear weapons: plutonium and uranium, according to Fox News. In return, the strict economic sanctions on Iran were alleviated.

“Every pathway to a nuclear weapon is cut off,” Obama said at the time the accord was signed in 2015. “This deal is not built on trust. It is built on verification.”

Trump said the deal is no longer in the best interest of the U.S. and said Iran “has committed multiple violations of the agreement.” He also accused Iranian capital Tehran of “not living up to the spirit of the deal,” according to The Hill.

But CNN reports the International Atomic Energy Agency, America’s European allies and the government itself have said Tehran is complying with the agreement.

Instead of ripping up the agreement, as he pledged to do during his campaign, Trump passed the issue off to Congress to strengthen the law that governs the U.S.’s part in the deal, but Trump said he reserves the right to pull out of the agreement.

“Our participation can be canceled by me, as president, at any time,” Trump said during the same speech. “They may come back with something that’s very satisfactory to me, and if they don’t, within a very short period of time, I’ll terminate the deal.”

The Chicago Tribunereports Trump is required by U.S. law to certify to Congress that Iran has been complying with the deal by Sunday. The president is required to notify Congress of this every 90 days, which Trump has done twice now but said Friday he would not do again.

“We cannot and will not make this certification,” Trump said. “We will not continue down a path whose predictable conclusion is more violence, more terror and the very real threat of Iran’s nuclear breakout. I am directing my administration to work closely with Congress and our allies to address the deal’s many serious flaws so that the Iranian regime can never threaten the world with nuclear weapons.”

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani defended the deal and said Iran will continue to abide by the terms set by the agreement, adding that Trump’s position has left the U.S. “more isolated than ever.”

At Least 32 People Are Confirmed Dead Following Northern California Wildfires

Over twenty wildfires have burned across more than 221,000 acres in Northern California and resulted in at least 32 deaths, but officials say that number will likely increase as they continue their search efforts.

“We’re not even close to being out of this emergency,” Mark Ghilarducci, the director of California’s Office of Emergency Services, said Thursday.

Firefighters continue to fight the fires into Friday, all while facing strong gusts of up to 60 mph this weekend, USA Today reports.

There are currently over 8,000 firefighters responding to the disaster, which has destroyed at least 3,500 homes and businesses and caused thousands more to flee their homes.

A California Fire incident report filed Thursday night suggests the fight will not be easy.

“Steep inaccessible terrain coupled with critical fuel moistures, and northwest winds will provide challenges for crews working on the fire,” the report stated, referring to the Redwood fire in Mendocino County, which burned through 34,000 acres and was only 10% contained as of Friday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The rising death toll has already made this one of the deadliest set of fires the state of California has ever seen. CNN reports the largest of these fires is still going strong.

California Fire Director Ken Pimlott had similar thoughts on the future of the fires as Ghilarducci: “We are a long way from being done with this catastrophe.”

Reinforcements are coming in from across the state to help battle fires, according to Napa County Fire Chief Barry Biermann, which he told CNN is “starting to give us the upper hand, allowing us to actually … (get) some containment started in certain areas.”

Firefighters will continue working on containing the fires despite the 60 mph winds predicted for the weekend. Authorities are investigating the cause of the wildfires.

The 11 Costumes You'll See at a College Halloween Party

In college, Halloween is a week of fun, partying and getting the chance to be someone besides yourself for a change. The ultimate goal is to dress as something unique that no one else at the party will be. Some people don't exactly get the memo. Keep reading for a list of the 11 Halloween costumes you're guaranteed to see at any and every college party.

1. The Cat

We're convinced that cat costumes are for those who couldn't care less about Halloween. They either don't care enough about the holiday to plan an actual costume, or they procrastinate, and when October 31st comes around, they're so antsy to get drunk that they throw on the nearest scrap of fabric and cat ears and call it a night. This costume is typically worn by those who are, in layman's terms, basic.

2. The Main Character From a Hit TV Series

Whether it's the Liars, Khaleesi, Dexter or Leslie Knope, when people like a TV show, they find it necessary to dress up as one of the main characters. Expect at least six people at your party this year to be dressed as the main character of whatever the most popular TV show is around Halloween 2017.

3. The Solo Cup

This dude loves inconvenient costumes and really loves the attention that comes with them. His likes include beer pong (obviously), being shirtless and pushing through the crowded dance floor, making everyone else tumble to the ground and have no choice but to notice him.

4. The Risky BusinessCostume

Similar to the cat costume, the Risky Business costume is generally worn by basics. It requires little to no effort and is almost always worn by those who haven't actually seen the movie. "Wait, there's a movie?"

5. The Sexy [Insert Literally Anything Here]

Want to go as a sexy beer can? Sure. What about sexy Skittles? No problem. Sexy iPod? Yeah, that can be a thing! All it takes is a tight dress, sometimes made out of duct tape if you're into that kind of thing, and a logo on the front. You can be anything your heart desires with a trip to Michaels and a good printer.

6. The Literal Costume

This guy is all about the irony. He's a total goofball, and his goal of the night is to make people laugh. When a literal costume is as elaborate as the picture above, it's a great costume, but literal costumes can often be a failed attempt at wit and will produce many an eye roll. The same guy has also been seen going as a "pothead" by wearing an actual pot on his head at past Halloween parties.

7. The Creeper Costume

The creeper costume is always worn by an equally creepy dude. He just came to the party to get with girls, and, ironically enough, his costume is doing the exact opposite of its intended purpose. Ladies, keep your distance from the "Free Mammograms" guy. He's not a real doctor.

8. The Non-Costume

Costumes like this are for the guys who are too cool to care. Hipster, intellectual, maturewhatever this dude calls himself, he sucks. Yeah, the non-costume can be funny if done like our boy Jim Halpert, but what's the point of Halloween if you're going to be boring and dress normally? Come onit only happens once a year, everyone dresses up and, as Cady Heron once said, "You'd better be one of them, biotch."

9. The Costume Nobody Gets

There's always someone at the party who wants to flaunt her intellectual side and show that she's above the typical and childish costume choices that most college kids are into. And there are always drunk people who straight up don't get it. Most conversations overheard between a person wearing this costume and a drunk partygoer go as follows:

Drunk: "Like, what are you?"

Intellectual:"A Freudian slip."

Drunk: *Stares blankly*

Intellectual: *Stares blankly*

Drunk: *Burps then walks away*

10. The Buzzed LightBeer

This costume is for BROOOOs. If you don't bro out as hard as this bro, then go home. This bro wants everyone around him to know that he drinks alcohol. And he drinks a lot of it, often. He can pound tons of beers. You only drank eight beers? That may as well be like drinking water.

11. The Costume That Ruins Your Childhood Memories

At every party, you're always graced with the girls who choose a beloved childhood character, such as a Disney Princess, a Rugrat (Yes, we've seen "sexy" Chuckie before) or even Mario and Luigi and wear lingerie in relevant colors to try to pass as said characters. We personally don’t remember Mario or Luigi wearing sparkly bras in Super Smash Bros. That must be in the newer version.

Anna Faris Revealed She Left Her First Husband Because of Her Insane Chemistry With Chris Pratt

Despite the fact that they announced their separation earlier this year, we're going to keep on reliving Anna Faris and Chris Pratt's most adorable AF couple moments as much as we possibly can in order to prevent our hearts from completely shattering — and one super juicy part of Anna Faris's upcoming book Unqualified is helping us reminisce on better times.

According to Cosmopolitan, in a newly-released excerpt from Unqualified, which comes out October 24, Faris says she left her first husband Ben Indra when her chemistry with Chris was so insane on the set of Take Me Home Tonight, she knew she had to do something about it.

She writes that she became so "incredibly jealous" of the "background actresses" that Chris was hooking up with while they were filming. As a result, she made the decision to end things with Indra, who didn't think she was serious at first and told her she was, "just tired." But because she and Chris were basically meant to be the cutest celebrity couple ever, she stood her ground.

Things take a steamy turn when Faris also writes that she basically showed up at Chris's house following her split from her first husband, "ready to get boned." And in case you were wondering, their hookup was apparently, "hot and heavy in a way that [she'd] never experienced before." DAYUM.

"Sure, I get to proclaim that I didn't f*ck Chris before I left Ben, but what is there to celebrate in that? It didn't make me a hero," she writes. "After all, I wanted to. Desperately. And I had feelings for him, obviously, even if I wasn't honest with myself about what those were."

Should You Take the ACT, SAT or Both?

Being accepted into college is one of the happiest moments in your life. However, what some people may not see behind the tears of joy associated with receiving your college acceptance letter are the numerous hours you spent studying for the SAT or ACT ––or maybe even both. If you are currently preparing to take these tests or if you are just trying to plan ahead, read below for a guide on the best test to take to get into college.

Both tests are different

The SAT consists of reading, writing and language, math (with and without a calculator), and an optional essay. The ACT, on the other hand, consists of English, math, reading, science and an optional essay.

Neither test penalizes you for wrong answers, but you do get a little more time for the SAT ––three hours plus 50 minutes for the essay portion. During the ACT, you get two hours and 55 minutes of test-taking plus 40 additional minutes for the optional essay.

The SAT scores two sections; math and reading make up one section and writing and language make up the other. You can get a possible score ranging anywhere between 400 to 1600 points. The ACT scores all four sections individually on a scale from one to 36, where 36 would be the highest score possible.

Pros and cons of the SAT

As stated above, if you miss a question on the SAT, you will not be penalized. The test is also aimed at creating questions that have to do with the real world. Be warned, though--you can't use your calculator on every math question on the SAT (you can on the ACT!)

Nicole Harris, a student at the University of Connecticut only took the SAT. “I applied to state universities and was fine with just that test,” Nicole says. “As for the ACT, I didn’t feel like it was necessary for me to take it based on where I was applying and what major I wanted to go into.” This is the case for many other high school seniors applying to college.

Some cons of the SAT include interpreting graphs in the middle of a reading passage and wordy math questions that have you use critical reading skills.

Pros and cons of the ACT

One of the major drawbacks of the ACT is that unlike the SAT, it has a science section. Regardless of if you consider yourself strong in this subject, it is still an added section to worry about. The section is more about scientific reasoning, though (can you interpret this science graph?) rather than cold hard chemistry facts, for instance. The ACT is taken in a shorter amount of time, but it asks more questions, giving you less time to review your answers. If you work well under pressure, the ACT may be the test for you.

Students are not allowed to send the scores of individual sections to colleges because all of your scores are averaged together. However, the ACT doesn’t take off for wrong answers.

Elaina Steingard, a student at the University of Missouri took the ACT and found that it was an accurate measure of her knowledge.““I would suggest taking the ACT over the SAT," Elaina says. "For me, I thought that it did better at covering basic understanding and important concepts.” She is not alone in this belief!

So, should you take both?

Tommy Rogers, a college recruiter for the University of Missouri, thinks that the ACT is more practical knowledge. “I personally liked the ACT better,” Tommy says. “It hit on more subjects we learned in high school and the scaling was fairer.” But, just because an expert suggests taking the ACT doesn’t mean that everyone would do better on that test. The SAT was changed this year to take a new approach to testing.

If you decide to take only one test, you are bound to save time and money ––but if you decide to take both, then you can have more of an option of what to send to certain schools. Check with the college admissions for each school you apply to and make sure you are taking the test that they accept because not all universities will take both.

The best thing you can do as a student is to take a practice test for each and then make a decision on the test to take. Don’t worry, it’ll all be worth it in the end!

This 'Riverdale' Fan Theory Claims Betty's Mom Is a Witch, & It's Actually Not That Far-Fetched

Hold up: Riverdale's Alice Cooper, Betty Cooper’s mom, is low-key a witch, according to a fan theory. The second season of Riverdale just premiered Wednesday night, and everyone’s already making outlandish speculations. But is this theory really that preposterous?

It might have some truth to it, given that a Sabrina the Teenage Witch spinoff is in the works. Tumblr user betty-and-jughead says that Alice might be related to the Spellmans. After all, Alice’s maiden name in the Archie Comics is Smith, but we don’t know what it is on Riverdale. The Tumblr user also points out that Alice is “constantly using terms like ‘brew’ and ‘banish’ and ‘witching hour’.” Could her vocabulary be related to her witchy past, or is it just a coincidence?

BuzzFeed goes even further by suggesting that Polly Cooper’s baby could be Sabrina Spellman. Say what?

The BuzzFeed video elaborates, “In the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina at 16, witches are able to choose between being baptized during a satanic ritual, or skipping out on it to live a life as a mortal.” It says Alice may have chosen to undergo this satanic ritual to remain a witch, but Hal Cooper convinced her to raise Betty and Polly as mortals. Uh, good thing, because I wouldn’t want to see Dark Betty casting any spells.

According to Harper’s Bazaar, Jon Goldwater, the executive producer of Riverdale and the upcoming Sabrina spinoff, told fans at New York Comic Con that they've “started casting for Sabrina the character. You’ll be able to meet her soon.” Maybe a crossover will give a glimpse of the other supernatural aspects of the comics.

After all, Entertainment Weekly has already explained that the new Sabrina show will include more of the occult undertones featured in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic. Executive producer of Riverdale and comic book writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year that Sabrina might have a “potential appearance” on Riverdale.

*If* Alice is secretly a witch, does this mean that Betty’s secret, hot AF brother could be a warlock? I mean, he wasn’t raised by the Coopers, so he may have found his spellbinding abilities on his own.

Clearly, we’re going to have to rewatch every episode of Riverdale to thoroughly research this developing theory.

Hillary Clinton Is Giving Harvey Weinstein Campaign Contributions To Charity

Hillary Clinton recently shared that she plans to give Harvey Weinstein’s contributions to her campaign to charity: “There’s no doubt about it,” she said in a CNN interview earlier today about the decision.

If you aren’t familiar with the Harvey Weinstein scandal, here’s a quick recap: Exactly one week ago, the New York Times released an expose revealing that Hollywood film producer and seven-time Tony Award winner Harvey Weinstein has been accused of sexual harassment—not just once, or twice, but countless times—by over a dozen women. Since then, he’s been fired.

According to Bloomberg, Weinstein recently quit the board of the Robin Hood Foundation, New York City's largest poverty-fighting organization. He's also been an active supporter and contributor to the Democratic Party and its recent presidential campaigns. According to Business Insider, Weinstein has contributed over 26,000 dollars to Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign. It was only on Monday afternoon that Clinton broke her silence about the scandal:

Her initial silence and recent response has drawn criticism and been deemed as inadequate from members of both the Democratic and Republican parties. Former president Barack Obama, who also received a significant share of campaign contributions from Weinstein (and whose daughter, Malia, interned for Weinstein's company during her gap year), has also not yet spoken out against the Harvey Weinstein revelations.

Many Hollywood celebrities have already spoken out against Harvey Weinstein.

People in positions of power have the responsibility and the ability to speak out for what’s right. Silence is not golden.

3 College Essay Clichés You Should Avoid

The college essay. It’s the most daunting paper you’ll ever write in your high school career —and for good reason. This is your first personal introduction to colleges and it has the potential to make or break whether you receive that huge ‘Congratulations!’ envelope in the mail or not.

From picking a topic to writing the actual paper, to editing (and editing, and editing…), there are plenty of dos and don’ts to consider. So, before you put pen to paper—or fingers to keyboard in this case–check out this list of the college essay clichés you should avoid in order to write a killer essay.

Understand what your essay is meant to do

This essay isn’t meant to be a personal memoir or speculative essay, it’s supposed to get you into college. Dan Lipford, an education consultant at ScoreAtTheTop and co-author of ScoreAtTheTop’s College Application Essay Don’ts: Part 1, says that this is the only reason for the college essay. So, how do you accomplish writing a kickass essay? He says that if you keep these two objectives in mind, then you’re on the right track:

1. Hook the reader: grab his/her attention immediately and make him/her want to read the rest of it.

2. Present yourself as an interesting person who’s likely to be a good student.

“If an essay accomplishes those two objectives, it’s a good one,” Lipford says. “If there’s stuff in the essay that doesn’t help accomplish those objectives, that stuff needs to be deleted. And if the essay doesn’t accomplish those objectives, it sucks.” With these things in mind, here are three tips to avoid the most comment college essay clichés and mistakes counter these objectives:

1. Choose your topic wisely

Any student who has ever written a paper will tell you that the hardest part is getting started. When you’re staring at a blank piece of paper and your head is swarming with possibilities, it can get overwhelming. But, keying in on what you want to focus on is imperative.

Make sure the topic is something you’re passionate about, but definitely be wary of what you choose. “The trick is this: Don’t write about an experience,” says Missy Rose, the director of college guidance at Laurel School, an all-girls college prep school in Ohio. “Write about what you learned about yourself from that experience. Be reflective and dig more deeply than just a superficial description.”

Rose recommends that students stay away from service trip essays. “It is virtually impossible to write a good essay about a service trip–just don’t try,” she says. “That topic is a joke among college admissions officers.  I’ve seen it done well exactly one time.” Don’t take this as a challenge. Steer clear and pick something that you know you can do well.

She also recommends that students pick a small topic, like a few minutes in time rather than a whole summer. Don’t feel that you’re required to write about something tragic or depressing–as long as the essay is less about the event and more about what you learned, you’re on the right track.

Lipford says to stay away from the “dreaded Ds: death, divorce, depression, disease, and dogs.” Unless you’re a phenomenal writer —and even if you are— writing about one of these topics is extremely hard to do successfully because they’re overdone, slightly melodramatic and unsurprising.

In addition, he urges students to stay away from hot-button issues. “There’s no reason to take a risk by taking a position with which the admissions officer just might disagree,” Lipford says. So, remember what your goals are with this essay. You’re not changing the world with it, you’re trying to get into the college you want and then change the world.

2. Don’t bore admissions counselors

Writing a good intro to hook your reader is important because although the admissions officer is required to read your essay, your goal is to make them want to read it. Lipford says to avoid these top ten overused essay hooks:

  • From a young age I have (always) been (interested in/fascinated by)…
  • For as long as I can remember I have…
  • I am applying for this course because…
  • I have always been interested in…
  • Throughout my life I have always enjoyed…
  • Reflecting on my educational experiences…
  • Nursing is a very challenging and demanding (career/profession/course)…
  • Academically, I have always been…
  • I have always wanted to pursue a career in…
  • I have always been passionate about…

Rose also says to avoid any topic that is too dramatic and discourages students from creating a drawn-out hook that just wastes space instead of telling your story. With such a short essay, every sentence is crucial.

3. Let your personality shine through

Since this essay is supposed to be a personal representation of you, you don't want to make it boring. Rose recommends asking yourself, “What do I want the admissions readers to learn about me as a person from this essay? Did I convey that, or did I just describe something?” You’re not Shakespeare, so don’t try to write like him. Your admissions officer is looking for your voice and tone, so muddling your essay with huge words and confusing syntax won’t help your case.

“It is ideal if it [your essay] feels conversational,” Lipford says. “You’re sitting across from the admissions officer, who’s a good friend of yours, and you’re simply telling the story about yourself.” By making the essay formal, yet conversational, you’re making it more personal and relatable.

In this day and age, anyone with a computer (or iPhone) can look up synonyms. It’s more important to create strong, meaningful sentences than show off your vocabulary.
