HC Wake-Up Call: Trump's Paper Towels In Puerto Rico, House Passes 20 Week Abortion Ban & Instagram Now Allows You to Poll Your Friends

0
0

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Trump Threw Paper Towels at People in Puerto Rico — Seriously

In case you couldn't have already guessed, Trump's visit to Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria was basically a disaster. When speaking with government officials, he compared it to "real disaster," Hurricane Katrina, saying that Puerto Rico should be proud that their death count was, "Sixteen versus literally thousands of people." As if that weren't bad enough, he decided it would be a good idea to literally throw paper towels and supplies at hurricane victims. Not a good look.

House Passes Ban on Abortions After 20 Weeks

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed a bill that would criminalize abortion 20 weeks after pregnancy, CNN reports. The House voted 237 to 189 to pass it, though it will likely be tougher for the bill to make it through the Senate which is more narrowly divided on the issue and probably won't prioritize voting on it. Planned Parenthood has called the ban unconstitutional, saying it is, "a clear attempt to erode Roe v. Wade."

You Can Now Use Your Instagram Story to Poll Your Friends to Make Decisions for You

Instagram is continuing to roll out the new features. The app's next move? You can now add a sticker to your Instagram stories to poll your friends about basically all of your life decisions. Don't know whether you should be good and cook or order Seamless? Trying to decide exactly how much your bank account will hate you for buying those shoes? There's now an app for that.

What to look out for...

In case you need something to get you through the week, Starbucks is bringing back pumpkin spice-flavored whipped cream this Thursday, Oct. 5 — the perfect way to treat yourself and get into those ~fall feels~.

A GOP Rep Backing The 20 Week Abortion Ban Reportedly Wanted His Mistress To Have An Abortion, FYI

A GOP congressman who is backing the proposed 20 week abortion ban that passed in the House on Tuesday allegedly asked his mistress to have an abortion during a pregnancy scare.

The Pittsburg Post-Gazette first reported Tuesday that a text message sent in January suggests Rep. Tim Murphy of Pennsylvania urged his mistress Shannon Edwards, a forensic psychologist, to get an abortion. Murphy admitted to having an affair in September.

The Gazette obtained a transcript of the alleged texts between Murphy and Edwards, which were spurred by an anti-abortion statement Murphy’s team posted on Facebook on his office’s public account.

“And you have zero issue posting your pro-life stance all over the place when you had no issue asking me to abort our unborn child last week when we thought that was one of the options,” Edwards wrote in a text to Murphy on Jan. 25, according to the transcript.

CBS News reports the transcript also showed a reply on Murphy’s end which read, “I get what you say about my March for life messages. I’ve never written them. Staff does them. I read them and winced. I told staff don’t write any more. I will.”

The transcript also referenced an office memo seemingly written by Murphy’s chief of staff, Susan Mosychuk, called, “Office Conduct and Behavior: Harassment/Legal Compliance” in which Mosychuk said Murphy was responsible for creating a “state of terror” in the office.

These allegations arose just as the House passed a bill that would criminalize abortions after 20 weeks, except in cases of rape and incest and when the mother’s life is in danger, CNN reports.

Murphy is one of the co-sponsors of the bill, called "The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act", which many advocates and medical professionals have said is based on "junk science" and information that has not been thoroughly vetted by the scientific community.

Balenciaga Just Tried to Make Crocs Cool & It Kind of Worked

Paris Fashion Week just peaked, and we are still not over some of the ~interesting~ looks that graced the runway. We saw My Little Pony inspo and gorgeous lewks from Helen Mirren, but we felt totally shook when Balenciaga brought out platform crocs. Yes, platform crocs.

Balenciaga calls the 10 cm platform "Foam," and they actually don't look that horrible on the runway. Considering that these Crocs are now a full-blown retail collection, it might be time to incorporate the shoes into our own street style.

If you feel like something is missing from your wardrobe, Foam will be available to purchase in Spring 2018.

Lance Bass Came For Homophobic Restrictions On Gay Men Donating Blood After Las Vegas Shooting

The United States is facing a pressing need for blood donations in the wake of Sunday’s Las Vegas shooting, but there is one group of Americans that is still not allowed to help — gay men.

Lance Bass took to Twitter on Monday to express his frustration over the Federal Drug Administration law that bans gay men from donating blood if they have had sex with another man within the past 12 months, according to Us Weekly.

The former NSYNC singer is openly gay and married to Michael Turchin, which prevents him from donating blood despite wanting to help.

The policy was first implemented in 1983 as a lifetime ban. This was during the beginning of the AIDS crisis,People Magazine reports. The FDA has said it made this decision based on years of research and data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the HIV virus.

A lot has changed since 1983, and now, the American Red Cross, the AABB (which used to be known as the American Association of Blood Banks) and America’s Blood Centers have all spoken out against the antiquated law, calling it “medically and scientifically unwarranted.”

The trio has been urging the FDA to change the policy for a while, calling for a policy that is “comparable with criteria for other groups at increased risk of sexual transmission of transfusion-transmitted infections.”

But the FDA is not budging. “At present, there are insufficient scientific data available to determine whether it is safe to rely only on individual behavioral risk factors when determining donation eligibility,” the FDA stated in a document on reducing the risk of HIV transmission by blood. There is also no such ban in place for women who have sex with other women.

But with 527 people injured in the attack, donations from all Americans are greatly needed, and those in the LGBT community are speaking out.

Others are simply lamenting the fact that they can't help.

Here's hoping this will be the year that antiquated and homophobic restrictions on gay men (who just want to help victims of a national tragedies) will come to an end.

These Dolls with Vitiligo Are Expanding the Boundaries of Beauty Representation

Remember last year when Barbie tried to be more inclusive by creating a dolls with different skin colors and body shapes? It was a sweet attempt, but we knew the children's toy industry could do a lot better. Now in 2017, we're seeing more awareness that there is no one standard of how a woman should look (40 shades of Fenty Beauty foundation, anyone?), and the new Vitiligo doll designed by Kay Black is spreading this message to children everywhere.

According to Refinery29, the dolls are inspired by model Winnie Harlow, who has been outspoken on raising awareness for the disease. Talk about an awesome step forward for diverse representation, because realistic features are beautiful. More of this please.

Ryan Gosling's 'Saturday Night Live' Skit About Papyrus Had Even the Font's Creator Laughing

If you watched SNL last weekend, you saw La La Land star Ryan Gosling hosting the Season 43 premiere. What a blessing that was, honestly. As per usual, he appeared in most of the skits, but there's one in particular that has everyone laughing: Papyrus. The skit, which has gone viral since it aired, shows Gosling losing his mind over the use of the Microsoft Word font Papyrus in the Avatar movie logo. Just about everyone has seen it—even the Papyrus creator himself.

"I woke up this morning Sunday and my email was full," Papyrus creator Chris Costello said. "I had a lot of people telling me, 'Did you see this Saturday Night Live thing?' I took a look at it and me and my wife were cracking up, I mean we couldn't stop laughing. It was one of the best things I've seen."

Costello may have gotten a laugh over the sketch, but he still wholeheartedly believes in the design. "It was not my intent to be used for everything—it's way overused," he said. "I'm a graphic designer as well, I'm an illustrator…I believe it's a well-designed font, it's well-thought out."

Since it was created, the font has been everywhere. I know I used it as a kid to give the things I wrote some style. Costello made the font at age 23 by just sketching it out—it's amazing how far the font has come to be on Saturday Night Live. Much like Gosling, I forgot about it for years.

The distraught character Ryan plays may think otherwise, but no matter what, Papyrus will only make me laugh from now on.

Zendaya Opens Up About the Importance of Genderless Clothing & Reconfirms She's Our Fashion Queen

Zendaya is an actress, model, style icon and fashion designer (what doesn't she do?), proving every day that women are limitless. Her fashion line, Daya by Zendaya promotes diversity in size, race and gender with sizes from 0 to 22, website models of various ethnicities and absolutely no gender categories. In a recent interview with Glamour, conducted by Yara Shahidi no less, Zendaya spoke out about the importance of genderless clothing in her own life.

"I was lucky to have parents who let me wear what I wanted to wear and let me shop where I wanted to shop. Nine times out of 10 I was shopping in the boys section. I wore cargo shorts and hoodies. That was my uniform," she explained. As we can see from a recent Instagram post, this is still a pretty frequent occurrence with Zendaya.

I raided Dwayne Wayne's closet...thanks tv pops for your fresh old tee @kahmoshun

A post shared by Zendaya (@zendaya) on

Zendaya's gender-neutral line allows her customers not to feel forced into an identity while shopping, which is extremely important for non-binary or gender-fluid people. As for her own fashion empowerment, she took a few notes from Rihanna. "A huge part of my gaining confidence is because of fashion. What I love about someone like Rihanna is her fearlessness. It’s almost a sense of, pardon my language, I don’t give a f**k. When she wears a dress, it’s for herself, and you can see that," she reflected. "There’s something to be said for the fact that literally everybody can hate my outfit, but if I feel good in it, I’m the only one that should matter."

While Zendaya is not the only designer that with a gender-neutral clothing line, her influence is important to millennials and those in Gen Z who struggle with the pressure of gender conformity. You can read about 12 more gender-neutral clothing brands hand-picked by Her Campus, here.

So THIS Is Why Guys Send Dick Pics

0
0

The last time you received an unsolicited dick pic, your immediate reaction was probably either “lol” or “GROSS!” followed by a long period of scratching your head and wondering what drove him to send that. Does he think that’s what I want? What do I do now? PENISES ARE WEIRD! are pretty common thoughts that go through our heads while we’re spiraling. We understand, ladies. We all deserve answers.

Unfortunately, there’s been next to no research or studies focused on this concerning sexual issue, but leave it to us at Her Campus to go straight to the source for an explanation. We asked seven men what makes them send us those confusing AF dick pics, and for once we were not disappointed with what we got back.

They’re projecting

Could guys be sending unwarranted nudes because they’re actually just projecting their sexual desires onto us? Probably. That’s just the way we’re wired. It’s not uncommon for us to project our fantasies onto men and women either. Whether we’re holding them to the standard of Benjamin Barry from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, building them up to the point of fiction or saying “I love you” just because we want to hear it back, we women are totally guilty of projecting too. But a line should definitely be drawn between something that might be considered sexual harassment and a little harmless idealizing.

“I send them because that’s what I would want sent to me,” says Michael, a senior at Western Washington University. He’s basically confirmed what we’ve been thinking this entire time.

Adam, a sophomore at New York University, feels the same way. “It turns me on like crazy when a woman randomly sends me naughty pictures of herself, so I don’t get why girls I’m talking to get freaked out instead of letting it be pleasurable.”

As the saying goes, we should treat others the way we want to be treated in return, because that means a cycle of mutual affection and respect. However, that doesn’t mean send her a dick pic, because you in return would like to receive a vagina pic. That’s not how meaningful proverbs work.

Technology makes it way too easy

Unexpected penis shots aren’t coming from our best guy friends or men we really know all that well. The dick pics usually pour in from people we’ve met on a dating app or just happened to give our phone number to after meeting briefly. That means after minimal conversation, guys are feeling comfortable enough to reveal themselves and go from zero to 100 pretty quickly. They’re not all fuckboys either. They’re normal people who go to school or have jobs, but still think sending an erect penis via text is fine.

“Why not? That’s the way I think about it,” says Justin, a senior at California State University, Fullerton. “Because it’s digital, sending nudes gives me a level of anonymity. I think it makes showing a woman my penis very casual instead of same grand or maybe horrifying event. I usually do it pretty early too, so if she rejects me I can just stop talking to her.”

Maybe Tinder is to blame for the ubiquitous cock shot, but let’s be honest, our technology in general makes it pretty easy for guys to get away with this. They don’t have to put any personal investment in the message or romantically convey how badly they want to sleep with you. If it’s not going to work, they know early on, but that’s still not any way to get to know someone.

It provides sexual satisfaction

Sending an infamous phallic photo may actually be something guys don’t put a lot of thought into (clearly) before doing. Not in the way that they’re totally clueless about what women really want to see (their abs and nice hair), but because sending a nude just seems like the natural course of action.

“I really don’t know?” says Erich, a junior at the University of California, Irvine. “It’s the same thing as when I masturbate. I don’t plan on doing it or really give it much thought when it’s happening, but after then I’m like ‘okay, cool.’ I guess you could call it sexual release. My body tells me I need something to feel better and then I do it!”

We’re not saying that sending a dick pic is as instinctual as our basic human needs to eat and sleep, but achieving sexual satisfaction could be reasonably thoughtless. We can’t *totally* justify this reasoning, but also we get it.

It’s a power move

A dick pic can definitely make a woman squirm––but not always in a good way. While a lot of dick pics just seem harmless and questionable, there are some that make us feel incredibly unsafe. They can be followed by endless messages from a guy coercing us into texting a nude back. They can become threatening. They can be unsolicited to the point that it’s just blatant harassment, especially if it happens repeatedly.

“I’ve never sent an unsolicited dick pic, but my current girlfriend used to receive them regularly from an ex-boyfriend, and it scared the crap out of her,” says Caleb, a senior at California State University San Marcos. “It’s gross. It’s sexual harassment, and I know it’s possible to go to prison for it. I think that guys who do it are just trying to get off on some weird, perverted power trip and also elicit a reaction.”

For a few unfortunate people in the world, the unsolicited dick pic is definitely a sexual power move, and we’re sorry about that. It feels good to them to get a strong reaction from us because it means they’ve won and they got what they came for. It doesn’t matter if their dick is appalling as long as it got a response.

If you are a person who’s receiving these pictures and feeling uncomfortable you can either explain to this person that this is sexual harassment and block them, or you can ignore them completely and block them. It’s not your responsibility to change their behavior, but making it impossible to send you another picture will hopefully make them get the message.

They’re trying to be as direct as possible

If a man isn’t looking for anything serious, then why not cast a wide net, send out a bunch of penis shots and see who sleeps with you first? Yeah, the odds might be 2/100, but it certainly cuts out the time of courting.

“I like to be to the point,” says Nathan, a recent grad from Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo. “I’m trying to get sex out of this so might as well start with the most sexual thing I can think of: my dick.”

While we definitely like it when guys are upfront and confident about what they want, getting a surprise dick picture is definitely taking it too far too fast. At least it means we can speed up the rejection process!

They think it’s sexy

For some women, dick pics can totally be a turn-on when they’re unsolicited—everyone is entitled to their own sexual preferences. But we speak for a good number of ladies when we say that the male penis is not aesthetically pleasing or a turn-on unless it’s actually being used for sex. Sorry, guys. Your penis is great, but it’s really not as sexy as you think it is.

“I like to make women feel good about themselves, and by sending them a tasteful dick pic, I’m telling her that she’s desirable and I want her. I want her to get turned on by all of it,” says Chris, a recent grad from Vassar College who basically confirmed all our assumptions that men are way overestimating their penis power the same way we overestimate how attractive we are in our duck-face selfies.

We don’t want to condemn all dick pic senders, and we aren’t saying that collectively as women we hate them either. Men, our advice to you is maybe to make them less unsolicited. It’s going to make it so much better for us if you strike up a sexy conversation first and then send it (with approval) while we’re at home and relaxed, instead of in the middle of class when we’re trying to review for a physics midterm. If a woman wants to see your dick, she’ll tell you—that we promise.

Collegiettes, take control of the situation and let him know you don’t want that, and you’d rather get to know him a different way. If he’s persistent with the cock shots, then Bye Felicia!

The 'Grey’s Anatomy' Premiere Proved Season 14 Is for the Girls, & I'm Loving It

0
0

Grey’s Anatomy has always been celebrated for its strong female characters (I mean, look at Meredith in literally any episode ever), but the Season 14 premiere was so jam-packed with girl power, from individuals standing up for themselves to women pushing each other up. With so many "hell yeah" worthy moments, there’s little doubt in my mind that this is going to be the biggest season for the girls yet.

I quit watching Grey's after Derek’s death (my hiatus lasted for all of five seconds), and despite constant complaints and "when will it end"s and feeling trapped in an endless cycle of simultaneously amazing yet terrible television, I am so here for what’s going on right now. For the first time in forever, I didn't roll my eyes even once during an episode (except for just a little when Megan pretended to have amnesia, but if you didn't, you're lying). Instead, I found myself once again thriving on the cases, the drama and, obviously, the #grlpwr (in no particular order).

When Meredith put aside her personal life and performed two crazy af surgeries

I don’t think there’s ever been a doubt about how strong Meredith Grey is. Most recently, we saw her shine when she told Riggs that his long-lost fiancée was alive. “Go,” she pushed him. “If this were Derek, I’d already be gone.”

So when she saw the severity of Megan’s scans, which even Bailey and Webber didn’t know how to resolve, of course she immediately launched into a plan to fix her.

When Teddy (excuse me, where the hell have you been and who do you think you are?) attacked Meredith for treating Megan without disclosing her relationship with Riggs, Amelia jumped to her defense. Teddy then attacked Amelia for her problems with Owen (which is in some ways fair, but completely pushes aside the fact that Amelia is working on her own emergent cases), and Amelia said, “I’m sorry, is it 1952? Should I put on my apron and mix him a gin and tonic?” No, girl—do your thing!

But Meredith took Teddy's advice to heart (because girl fights are so 2000) and came clean with Megan. After she promised to do everything she could to make sure Megan could get back to her son, which at this point in time was all she cared about, they were both ready to push through. When the surgery was unsuccessful, Meredith gave herself time for a small, destructive breakdown, and when Maggie and Webber checked to see if she was okay, she told them, “I hope you don’t want any coffee because I broke all the mugs." Unembarrassed, unapologetic, and a total boss. And when she was ready to do a full abdominal wall transplant—a surgery that’s only been successful two out of the three times it’s been tried—she NAILED IT. As if there was any doubt.

When Ben became Stephanie

In Stephanie's glaring absence, Jo wondered who she would compete with, who she'd gossip with and who’d tell her when she needs a shower. She did need a shower, Ben told her, and so Ben became Stephanie. He told her that this wouldn't be the case when she tried to talk to him about Alex, but when she desperately needed someone’s advice, he stepped in. While trying to work through a poor decision in a one-night stand, Jo told Ben how she chooses bad guys. He immediately told her that guys hurting her have nothing do with her or who she chooses.

YAS, BEN. I don’t know about you, but I hope he stays the new Stephanie.

When Jo slayed her solo surgery

In the cutest moment of the premiere, a little boy mistook Jo for Alora the Warrior Queen, a character from his comic book. Jo adopted the title to amp herself up for a solo surgery. “Handle it? I’m a freakin’ warrior queen." And then, when a med student dropped his actual glasses into the little boy’s open abdomen, she refused to hand the surgery over to Alex and absolutely SLAYED at sanitizing the area, kicking the students out and completing the surgery.

When Bailey smashed her shoes (aka the patriarchy)

I first noticed Bailey's thing with the shoes when she was eating her lunch barefoot and watching the construction workers work, because same. The next morning, she sat holding her heels in her hands and said she didn’t want to stuff her feet into them anymore. When Webber was chief, he didn’t have to “toddle around on sticks all day.” Hunt didn’t need to "squeeze five toes into a space made for two.” But since she’d become chief, she couldn’t wear her surgical clogs anymore. “You know why?” she asked Ben. “Society?” DING DING DING. And when she threw her shelves full of heels into a garbage bag, millions of women screamed in delight and horror combined.

When Carina DeLuca brought her groundbreaking research to Bailey

DeLuca’s sister, Carina, made her grand debut in the season premiere. She’s an OBGYN, and she'd come to ask Bailey to let her use the hospital’s MRI machine for her research study on the changes in the female brain during orgasm. This has been studied extensively in men, but never in women. “They study the male brains and they expect the female brain to magically fit in with their conclusions…” Um, hello, could you remind the actual fields of science and medicine of this please?

The study is fully funded by drug companies that see potential in a “female Viagra,” but Carina's interest actually lies in how sexual stimulation can contribute to pain control (which nobody would fund because why would they?).

“Let me get this straight,” Bailey said. “You want me to let you have women masturbate in my MRI machine so that you can study their brains while they orgasm?” She looked down at her heels, which she was still wearing at this point. “Done.” BLESS UP.

When Amelia went a little bit rogue

Amidst all of the above, Amelia was working on her own surgery: a 14-year-old with a massive tumor in the side of his head. Unfortunately, it was wrapped around critical nerves, and while she needed his help to deconstruct and reconstruct his jaw, Avery adamantly refused to do so. He went so far as to show her pictures from a similar surgery he failed at, which left a woman without her mandible. Okay, pretty boy, pls take your head out of your ass. Just because you failed at something doesn’t mean everyone else will. Avery took her to Bailey to try to put a stop to it, and as they continued to argue, Bailey looked down at the heels she was still wearing. She took the shoes off, told him that since it's Amelia's patient, it's her decision, and then shut her shoes in her desk and put on her surgical clogs.

Since Jackson wouldn’t help, Amelia dismantled the kid’s jaw herself. After removing the entirety of the tumor, she called Jackson in to reconstruct it and he went off, threatening Amelia that she should be on review to lose her medical license for her recklessness. Having taken apart his jaw when that part of the procedure was outside of her specialty, I can see his point. However, she stood up for what she believed she could do, and she did it. How many other times have we seen this over the years? Despite everyone else telling her to send him off to a pain clinic that wouldn't help, she gave a little boy his life back, and she was a total badass doing it.

Let's just hope she approaches her own treatments with the same attitude—I'm already biting my nails over the next episode's preview!

Ryan Gosling Took His Daughter to New York for the First Time, & It Did Not Go Well

After a stellar and hilarious night on Saturday Night Live, Ryan Gosling popped over to Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday night. The actor and late-night host discussed how Gosling has “this weird disorder where when I find something funny, I laugh.” Then, Jimmy asked Ryan if he brought the fam (you know, Eva Mendes and their two sure-to-be adorable daughters) with him to New York. And Ryan had the best story about introducing his one-year-old daughter Amada to the Big Apple.

He said, “I brought her to the window in the morning and I said, ‘Sweetheart, welcome to New York.’ Two cars went ‘smash’ and smoke started pouring out…these two guys got out and I won’t repeat the hand gestures for you, but I quickly covered her eyes and ran away from the window.”

What a way to be introduced to NYC. Maybe next time he should play “Welcome to New York” by T. Swift and call it good.

Kim Cattrall Blasts Sarah Jessica Parker Over 'Sex and the City 3' Diva Rumors, & I Can't Handle This Feud

We’ve all wondered if we would see the fabulous Sex and the City crew together again, but recently, Sarah Jessica Parker confirmed that wouldn’t be happening. This left room for Kim Cattrall to give a statement on why there’d be no Sex and the City 3, as well as share her opinion on SJP (yikes).

According toCosmopolitan, during an interview with Piers Morgan, Cattrall said she “never asked for any money, never asked for any projects.” DailyMailTV originally reported that she had “torpedoed” the film with her many demands. She told Morgan, “To be thought of as some kind of diva is absolutely ridiculous.”

Cattrall also described the situation surrounding the third film, saying, “It feels like a toxic relationship.” And when it comes to the SATC cast? “And this is really where I take to task the people from Sex and the City and specifically Sarah Jessica Parker in that I think she could have been nicer. I really think she could have been nicer.”

Sounds more like Mean Girls than Sex and the City!

Cole Sprouse & Lili Reinhart Tried to Sneak a Hug on National TV, But Fans Noticed

The cast of Riverdale appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night and  played "Search Party" against Miley Cyrus and her family. They discussed various Riverdale things, drank milkshakes and shared plenty of laughs. Though all of this is great, fans honed in on Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse (otherwise known as Betty and Jughead), who are reportedly a couple on- and off-screen. What one viewer noticed during Fallon just goes to show that passionate fans don't miss a beat.

Cole and Lili didn't sit or stand together the entire time they were on the late-night show, which is a little sad to hear. But don't panic just yet. In one small moment that only an eagle-eyed Sprousehart fan would catch, it looks like Lili and Cole hugged each other as the show was going to commercial. Thanks to a slo-mo video posted by a fan account, it's easier to see what's going on. I choose to believe that this embrace proves their love is alive, no matter how private they try to keep it.

Here's a closer look and in slow mo! Right before the commercial break, Cole went straight to Lili with what seems like an intention to wrap his arm around her. Also, you can see Lili leaned into his body as soon as he gets nearer. She knows how to tease him lmao. I just hate that they decided to fade out the camera while SH did that Lili, you're doing amazing sweetie! Cole, you're whipped side is showing again So glad this late night tv show exists. Thank goodness for diehard fans who are dedicated to Riverdale and Lili and Cole's alleged relationship. Their willingness to go to these lengths to prove they're a couple despite their public body language is honestly sweet.

I can totally understand wanting to be professional, but watching Cole hug Lili when he thought no one was watching is beyond satisying.

Becky G Got Dragged Off Stage at a Fifth Harmony Concert, & The Secondhand Embarrassment Is Real

When you hear this story, try not to cringe. Becky G was mistakenly identified as a fan and pulled off the stage during a Fifth Harmony concert in Argentina. The group was performing their song "All In My Head (Flex)" when opening act Becky G triedto run on stage and join them. Becky was only trying to help Dinah-Jane Hansen with an outfit mishap, but security must've missed the memo, Entertainment Weeklyreports. How awkward.

In fan videos, you can see Becky running on stage with a flag, only to be yanked off stage quickly. Normani Kordei notices the mistake but continues to dance while looking to the side of the stage where Becky is stuck trying to understand what's happening. Ally Brooke then walks over while she's singing to grab Becky and bring her back to stage and tie a flag around Dinah's ripped outfit. Thank goodness the girls were paying attention or Becky G may have never made it on stage.

After the incident, Dinah and Becky G tweeted back and forth, making jokes about the situation. "Now you know I'm your number one fan @dinahjane97," Becky tweeted. Dinah replied, "Now I know who would save me xx muchos besos mama." It's good to see Becky isn't horribly embarrassed and can see the hilarity behind it all.

After seeing these tweets, it's safe to say Becky G is a true friend if she's willing to go through all this to help Dinah with a wardrobe malfunction.

Why Don't Women Win More Nobel Prizes In Science?

On Tuesday, three scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in physics. These recipients, Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne, and Barry Barish, “are credited with detecting the waves that Albert Einstein predicted a century ago and described as ‘ripples’ in the fabric of the universe," according toFortune. A little more about these recipients? They’re American. They work at MIT. And, oh yeah, they’re all men. (But we could’ve guessed that.)

Counting these three recipients, 206 people total have won the Physics Nobel Prize — 204 of those recipients were men. Only two women have won the Physics Nobel Prize. (And, as Fortune noted, these women didn’t even receive the full prize—Marie Curie and Maria Goeppert Mayer each received “a quarter of a prize.”)

Looking beyond the Physics prize to the Nobel Prize in general, things don’t look much better for women. As Scientific American notes, “only 17 women have been awarded a science Nobel Prize since its inception in 1901. That amounts to three percent of all prizewinners.”

Allison, a sophomore majoring in Computer Science at the University of Michigan College of Engineering told Her Campus that she's not all that surprised by the lack of representation, given how often she's one of the few women in her classes.

“I can’t really say I’m surprised by how few women have won the Nobel Prize," she said. "I am frequently one of five or six girls in classes of 100, so I’ve learned not to think about ratios too much. I figure I’m doing what I love, and as more women begin to do the same, the ratios will sort themselves out.”

Like Allison notes, the lack of female Nobel Prize recipients is grim and disheartening, but not really surprising. We already know that there is a tremendous bias against women in the STEM fields. Perhaps some of this bias lies directly in the Swedish Academy of Science, which awards the prize, but it’s likely that the majority of this bias is systemic.

Scientific American explains that “in human societies, it always seems as if men, from time immemorial, have done everything possible to deny women access to knowledge and power, which are often linked.”

Of course, in our society, you could argue that women finally do have the same access to education as men. However, this is still a relatively new privilege. As Scientific American states, “although girls are reclaiming the world of science little by little, it will take several generations before they accede to positions of power beyond the administrative level.”

Although the bias against women in STEM has historical roots, it's possible that we've all internalized it more than we think. Scientific American explains that 67 percent of men and 66 percent of women still believe that women lack the capacity to become “first-rate scientists.” They also note that, when you know there’s bias against you, you tend to underperform. That means that men automatically have an advantage over women: when men succeed in STEM, it’s because they’re expected to, whereas when women succeed in STEM, they’re perceived to be defying all odds.

Lili, a pre-med sophomore at the University of Michigan and co-founder of the women’s health club WORTH, told Her Campus that she is "both disappointed and inspired by the underrepresentation of women among Nobel laureates" as a college woman in STEM.

"I feel strongly that women deserve to be recognized for their efforts in such a dynamic field, and for me personally, knowing that we are in the minority makes me want to work that much harder to provide meaningful contributions to medicine," Lili said.

Times Higher Education conducted a survey of about fifty Nobel prizewinners, asking them why they believe so few women have won the prize: 76 percent of those surveyed agreed that there was at least a possibility that the lack of women reflects bias, but only 17 percent of them argued that it “definitely reflects bias.”

It seems that most people agree that the bias is the result of a larger cultural trend, rather than the views of a few specific people: “One US researcher blamed the ‘systematic devaluation of women’s role in science’, while another US winner said that the problem is ‘clearly societal and one cannot blame scientists nor scientific institutions for the way in which our Western societies are organized’.”

If the problem is so deeply-rooted in our society, what can college women in STEM do to counteract it?

Dr. Piroska Szabó, Ph.D., the associate professor and lead investigator at the Van Andel Research Institute Center for Epigenetics told Her Campus that it's so important to continue recognizing and celebrating women who have already accomplished great things in the STEM fields.

“Yes, there is a bias against women in science, and even more bias in recognition. But some women have made it and received Nobel prizes in the past. My favorites from this list are Barbara McClintock, who discovered the jumping elements, and Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard, who discovered the rules of pattern formation," Szabó said. "I think there is hope for change and that women need to stand up for each other more. I think that if you do choose to work in science you should not only do it because you want to win the Nobel prize but because you are excited to figure things out that no one had figured out before you.”

Dr. Sara Pendleton, MD, also told Her Campus that women in STEM should not be discouraged by the lack of recognition, but rather that they should see it as an opportunity to use their skills for good.

“STEM fields need the input and leadership of women. I was in the first class at UM Medical School where there were more women than men graduating," Pendleton said. "That was a huge milestone, but things have come so much farther in the past 25 years! Do not be limited by others’ biases. Recognize that bias may exist and you may have to overcome them, but this is very possible. Excel in all you do and change the world to be a better place.”

6 Food Subscription Boxes For A Healthier School Year

It can be difficult to eat healthily in college. Although cooking has the potential to be fun and easy, sometimes between classes, clubs, student orgs and that all-important social life, it seems like there just aren’t enough hours in the day! Luckily, there are several food subscription boxes that can do the work for you. They send healthy foods right to your door so all you have to do is start snackin’ to feel the benefits of a nutritious diet. Here are some of the best food subscription boxes for college students!

1. Love With Food (Starts at $7.99/month)

Love With Food sends you a box of all-natural, organic or gluten-free snacks every month. There are three different options you can choose from depending on your price range, the number and kinds of snacks you want.

The Tasting Box is $7.99/month, and according to the Love With Food Website, includes “7+ new and surprise snacks each month,” while the Deluxe Box is $16.99/month, and has 15+ snacks. There’s also a Gluten-Free Box for $19.99/month, which includes 10+ — you guessed it — gluten-free snacks each month. The snacks are all typically things you can’t just find in the grocery store, like gluten-free muffin mix, green tea latte flavored candy and pasta made from chickpeas!

Rachna, a freshman at Dartmouth College, has a friend that orders one of the boxes. “She orders the Tasting Box, which gives her seven snacks a month that are organic, without trans fats or hydrogenated oils, without artificial flavoring and coloring.” Also, for each month that you’re a member, and for each purchase that you make, Love With Food donates one meal to hungry children. You get healthy, yummy snacks, and you get to make a difference! It’s a win-win.

2. Freshly ($49.99/week)

Freshly is a great option if you have your own kitchen but find yourself too busy to cook healthy meals. (Has anyone else gotten into the habit of coming home after a long day and pouring yourself a bowl of Cheerios for dinner?)

Freshly has over 30 meal options, which are all gluten-free, and each week you select the ones that you want sent to you. They’re all cooked by chefs, so you know that they taste delicious. Plus, none of the meals have any refined sugar, gluten, or artificial ingredients (which is great because artificial sweeteners can sabotage weight loss). It’s super easy! They send you meals big enough for one adult, and you just have to heat them up and they’re ready in under three minutes. Some of their “top rated” meals are buffalo chicken breast, veggie baked penne, and chicken and rice pilaf. (So definitely a level up from Cheerios and ramen!)

3. Urthbox (Starts at $19.99/month)

Urthbox is another awesome choice for all of you snackers.  Basically, you choose what size box you want (from Mini, which is $19.99 per month for 6+ snacks, all the way up to Large, which is $49.99 per month for 25+ snacks.)

You also choose which kind of box you want, with options like the Classic (“healthy snacks” acording to Urthbox), Gluten-Free, Vegan, or Diet (“calorie/fat/carb conscious”). Regardless of which box you pick, though, all of their snacks are organic, non-GMO and all-natural. Depending on which kind of box you select, the products can range from juices to dried meats to snack bars.

Urthbox is a great option because the choice in boxes allows you to have more say in the energy sources you want. Sarah Ball, a MPH and RD who works in the University of Michigan School of Public Health, says that “Snacks (and meals) should ideally contain a mix of protein, fiber, and healthy fat. This will provide ample energy and will stabilize blood sugar levels so that you don’t experience the blood sugar roller coaster as you might with a snack containing lots of sugar or refined carbohydrates.”

4. VeganCuts ($22.95/month)

With the popularity of documentaries like What the Health, lots of people are making the decision to go vegan. VeganCuts makes it way easier to do that! For $22.95 per month, you’ll get ten or more treats, which include lots of fun snacks that might be hard to find as a vegan, like “vegan eggs” and peanut butter cups. They have full-sized and sample-sized snacks, ranging from chips and cookies to sodas and teas. And if you subscribe for longer, the deals get better: a six-month subscription is $20/month, and a one-year subscription is only $18.50/month!

5. Graze ($13.99/week)

Graze is another popular food subscription boxes, and it chooses snacks based on your personal preferences. You get eight snacks per week, and each snack has a specific health benefit. Their snacks include “cinnamon pretzels” and “summer berry flapjacks”...definitely not stuff you can find in your school dining hall. And you’ll never get the same combination of snacks twice! Graze’s website says that “we have developed a range of over 100 delicious snacks and designed an intelligent algorithm, that we call DaRWIN, to customize each and every box specially for you.”

Emily, a third year student at The University of Nottingham, says, “I've subscribed to Graze for a few years now, on and off, because it's a great way to get healthy snacks that are perfectly portioned for you already when you're on the go. It also feels like a treat to yourself when it comes through the letterbox!”

Graze is definitely worth a try, especially since you can get the first box half-priced!

6. Naturebox ($5/month)

Naturebox is different than the other food subscription boxes because instead of paying a flat rate for a box each month, you pay $5 for a membership, then choose which food items you want in your box, and pay for each of the food items at a special membership rate.

The membership also gets you free shipping for as many snacks as you want. Naturebox has categories like “popcorn and pretzels, pantry staples, cookies & bars,” and more. They also have the option to buy in bulk to stock up those bare college-student cupboards! Naturebox is a great option if you want to choose which snacks you’ll receive and don’t have the time or transportation to go shopping. Plus, if you don’t like a snack, just let them know within ninety days and they’ll give you store credit for the price of that snack. And with the coupon code “THIRTY3” you can get 30% off your first three purchases!

Clearly, eating healthily in college isn’t as hard as you thought it was going to be! Of course, as Sarah Ball notes, the healthiest option is usually food you prepare yourself, like “deli turkey wrapped around guacamole and some spinach; apple slices with nut butter; trail mix with nuts/seeds, dried fruit and oats; cheese on whole grain crackers; hummus with veggie sticks.” But if it’s between ramen noodles for every meal and subscribing to one of these boxes, these boxes win every time.

Mila Kunis Knows That She's Raising Good Kids With Ashton Kutcher

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher are absolute couple goals. I’m a sucker for costar romances, and the fact that these two came together years after starring on That ‘70s Show together gets me every time. Now married with two young kids, Kunis and Kutcher have proven that they’re totally devoted to creating a strong family life together. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Kunis basically confirmed that raising kind, down-to-earth children is a priority for her and her husband.

Us Weekly reports that Kunis told ET that she has confidence in herself to raise good people. “We’re not gonna raise a--holes,” she said. “There’s enough a--holes in this world! We don’t need to contribute. But, you know, there’s some nice people.”

Although she was recently busy finishing the filming of A Bad Moms Christmas, Kunis was still dedicated to spending time with three-year-old daughter Wyatt and 10-month-old son Dimitri. “I can write you a book on kid-friendly activities anywhere in the world,” she said. “I’m like, ‘Let me tell you about the zoo in Atlanta and the bouncy house.’ There’s not one kid activity that I haven’t done yet with my child!”

Kunis and Kutcher are even committed to teaching their kids about helping the less fortunate during the holiday season. Kunis revealed that her family plans to start a “no gifts” Christmas tradition this year. “We’re instituting it this year because when the kids are [younger than] one, it doesn’t really matter,” she explained. “Last year when we celebrated Christmas, Wyatt was two and it was too much. We didn’t give her anything—it was the grandparents. The kid no longer appreciates the one gift. They don’t even know what they’re expecting; they’re just expecting stuff.”

She continued, “We’ve told our parents…’if you have to give her something, pick one gift. Otherwise, we’d like to take a charitable donation, to the Children’s Hospital or a pet [or] whatever you want.”

It sounds that she and Kutcher definitely know what they’re doing when it comes to their kids. Kudos to them for working to keep their family so grounded in a Hollywood setting!

7 Things the Overachiever in a Relationship Wishes You Understood

0
0

“A girl with goals,” responds every person after being asked what type of perfect girlfriend they want. They tend to leave out the fact they also want a girl who puts them first. In most cases, these two things don’t come together in a pretty little package. This idea of an ambitious, bad ass gal is better in theory than in reality for some people. If you want a girlfriend who’s serious about her pursuits in life and prides herself in productivity, you’ll have to have patience while she switches gears into relationship mode, one of the few things in her life that doesn’t come with a mission and deadline. This wonder woman, too, struggles with her dominating lone wolf nature when it comes to maintaining a healthy relationship. “It takes two” isn’t usually her motto. Here’s some things the overachiever in a relationship wishes you understood:

1. She’s got stuff to do

You wanted a girl with goals? Well lucky for you, you got one. This girl has things to do, and you have to be willing to put your pride aside and sit in the passenger seat from time to time. She's not going to text you 24/7. Don't fight with her over it; the only person she's cheating on you with is herself. “My boyfriend would always start fights with me for not texting him for a few hours,” says Liz Torrisi, a junior at Pace University, “even though he knew I was busy. It was the most unattractive thing.” If you’re this type of person, just don't even pursue a busy girl. You’re only making her more stressed. “As an overachiever myself, I have lost some relationships because guys wanted me to make them my biggest priority, if not my only priority,” explains Dr. Carole Lieberman, Beverly Hills psychiatrist and author. “It’s tough for a girl having to choose between spending time with a boyfriend or finishing up a project she’s passionate about.” She won't be able to attend every event or family function with you, either, because she probably misses her own, too. “It is a blow to their ego when a girl prefers to cozy up with her books or run for class president, instead of hanging out with them,” continues Dr. Lieberman. “Guys like to show off their successful girlfriend to others, but they want her to be available for their every whim at the same time.” She isn't an accessory or just something to show off, she's something to brag about—even better!

2. She will just never be satisfied

Even after a major accomplishment, this girl hardly ever truly feels good about herself. The initial happiness fades when she starts to ponder what she could’ve done better. This is how she is. And often times, this is hard for her significant other to accept. Just because she may not appear ecstatic after every thoughtful gesture or gift, it doesn’t mean she doesn’t appreciate it. Understand that she isn’t ungrateful or unamused, she’s just unfamiliar with quickly expressing complete satisfaction.

3. They do appreciate the little things. Actually, they need them

If you’re into the zodiac at all, you know that Capricorn women are frequently defined as the workaholic, detached type. Shortly following this description, though, is probably a tidbit about how they appreciate the simple things in life despite their complex minds. This applies to every hardworking girl; Caps are just commonly associated with the trait, and it’s always fun to explain behavioral patterns with astrology. According to New York based astrologist, Mecca Woods, “Capricorns want to succeed at love, too. She’s the kind of gal who knows what she wants and doesn’t settle until she gets it (like that job promotion). And when she finds someone she wants to be with, her goal is to build an empire with that mate.” She is so used to taking things seriously, probably wearing a poker face during most of her daily discussions, so don’t feel pressured to have serious conversations during your downtime with her. Don’t get it twisted—she respects you because you can have meaningful conversations—but she would love to talk about what kind of wallpaper you would prefer in your dream home, and she does care about how especially good your Chick-fil-A meal was today. She’ll want you to help her wind down after her busy day.

4. They need reassurance from you, too

A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology showed that men generally had lower self esteem when their female partner excelled at something, but women’s self esteem was unaffected when their male SO succeeded. Why? “Regardless of how modern a guy wants to believe he is, there are still some traditional values that are wired into us," further elaborates Dr. Lieberman, “such as the expectation that the man will be the overachieving bread-winner, and the woman will settle for some work that doesn’t take up too much time.” Please let this mindset become ancient. If you’re feeling like you’re the inferior one in the relationship who doesn’t do as much, it doesn’t mean you don’t have to provide your overachiever with reassurance that you appreciate and support her. Perhaps the worst thing you could do is become bitter. Don’t put her in the position to feel guilty. She already has a hard time loosening the firm grip she has on most aspects of her life, and probably struggles with her inability to control the fate of your relationship. So let her know it will all be okay, better yet that it will be great, and most importantly how proud you are of her. She may exude confidence but still needs to hear compliments

5. She thinks highly of you and wants the best for you

Overachievers don’t waste time – spending her time wisely has always been her strong suit. If she is even taking the time to date you to begin with, know that she thinks you’re worth it. And she’ll only want you to better yourself the way she does herself. It’s easy to be intimidated by your successful lover, but her intention is not to make you feel that way. Marcia Reynolds, author of Wander Woman, says that an overachiever’s “chronic need to rise above others can keep [her] from creating strong relationships.” She’s not trying to do that with you, though. She isn’t one to take on easy tasks, so you should be up for the challenge.

If you’re not up for the challenge, it is going to end. “I would consider myself an overachiever,” says Lola George, a junior at University of North Texas. “My ex-boyfriend was less ambitious than I was. He was content with playing video games and watching TV most of the time. I felt that he wasn’t a leader. I was continuously frustrated with him and eventually broke up with him because I wanted someone that I felt was more ambitious.” It’s just insulting to not even try.

6. When it comes down to it...

The overachiever’s relationship could likely end because their SO feels like “she doesn’t need him.” We get that you want to feel needed, because who doesn’t? If you want this self-sufficient, driven girl, though, you’re going to have to deal with the fact she isn’t relying on you for every little thing. When it comes down to it, you're right – she doesn't need you. She got herself where she is on her own, and she probably isn't going to start depending on someone else now. She wants you, though. She wants you to be there with her through everything, she wants to have fun with you, she wants to be with you. Don't expect her to beg you to stay. She won't. But she'll still cry if you go. (Before she reminds herself she's a boss, that's it.)

7. She loves you

She isn’t some robotic workaholic incapable of love. It’s about time overachieving, ambitious women stop being labeled as heartless. She can be as fun-loving and goofy as she is serious. She doesn't want to be treated any differently as a significant other, just with a tad bit more respect and understanding. If you aren't willing to try a little harder to be the romantic counterpart to the overachiever you were lucky enough to land… maybe underachiever is your type.

Being an overachiever is something your girl has probably struggled with her whole life – but let's be real, is it really even considered a struggle? She's made it this far in her life and now she just needs you to be understanding and put up with her somewhat unconventional relationship habits.
