21 Things Your Future Roommates Want You to Know (But Won’t Tell You)

$

Whether you’re rooming with your best friends from high school or a bunch of strangers that your university’s housing department set you up with, living with other people is not the easiest thing in the world. While roommate contracts are fine and dandy when it comes to outlining traditional roommate concerns ––like whose job it is to take out the trash or wash the dishes–– sometimes, they leave out the most essential things.

From not Netflix-and-chilling on the couch in the living room to understanding that sometimes they will use up all the hot water before you even wake up, here are 21 things your roommates actually want you to know.

1. You’re probably being loud AF in the morning

It doesn’t matter if I’m a light sleeper.

2. There will be times when all the hot water is used up before you even had a chance to take a shower

You snooze you lose. #SorryNotSorry

3. The only settings on my blow dryer are obnoxiously loud

Believe me, it’s hurting me just as much as it’s hurting you.

4. You can borrow my dishes (if you handle with care)

Because no one should have to eat their Cheerios out of a cup––it’s just not right.

5. I’ll know when you skipped your 8 a.m. lecture––but I won’t judge you

Hello! I’m obviously skipping mine, too.

6. You better let me know when you order take-out

Because there is a very good chance that I will want in on that.

7. Please refrain from Netflix-and-chilling in the communal living area

Or else you will feel the icy chill of my glare.

8. Don’t treat our trash can like a large Jenga game

It’s all fun and games until someone ends up picking up all the trash that fell on the floor… just take it out.

9. Give me a heads up before you plan on having company over

I’m not really interested in being welcomed home by strangers sitting on my couch.

10. Your SO may be great and all… but they really don’t need to live in our apartment

Unless they plan on paying rent, of course!

11. If the door is closed, you should probably knock

It’ll be for your own good, anyway.

12. Please don’t change the thermostat to an unbearable temperature

I’m not above engaging in a thermostat war.

13. I can survive in a reasonable degree of messiness

But let me know if you can’t ––no passive-aggressive notes are necessary.

14. If something of mine has expired in the fridge, feel free to throw it out

I promise that I’m not super attached to my expired milk.

15. Please don’t judge me for my bad days

In the words of Hannah Montana, “Everybody makes mistakes. Everybody has those days.”

16. I apologize in advance for banging on the door at 2 a.m. because I misplaced my keys

I will definitely owe you one.

17. Give me a heads up if you want to have a party

I will lock myself in my room, make other plans or bust out my party outfit.

18. Headphones exist for a reason

I don’t care if you’re blasting music or The Office on Netflix. I am not the friendliest person after being woken up from my third nap of the day.

19. Don’t touch my stuff when you get sick

I like you and all, but those lectures aren’t going to attend themselves.

20. I’m sorry for anything I say when I’m on my period

I really shouldn’t be allowed out of my room during that time of the month.

21. Let’s be on good terms (even if we aren’t BFFs)

I’m excited about getting to know you over the next year!

Is there anything that your future roommates should know about you, collegiettes?

Two Women Are Dead in a French Knife Attack That Is Likely a Terror Act

Two women in Marseille, France, are dead after being attacked by a man with a knife at a train station, The Washington Postreports.

Although soldiers fatally shot the man, BBC News says that Sunday’s incident is being treated as a terror act and that a counter-terrorism investigation has begun. An official confirmed that the attacker cried out the Arabic saying, “Allahu Akbar,” or “God is greatest.”

According to authorities, the man stabbed one woman to death, while the second woman died from a slit throat. Reuters lists the victims as being 17 and 20 years old. Security forces guarding the Saint Charles train station intervened, shooting the man and later evacuating the station. Approximately 200 police officers eventually appeared around Saint Charles, closing off the area’s roads for safety. Two police authorities told Reuters that the attacker was of “North African appearance” and used a butcher’s knife to harm the women. The police allegedly knew of him through his connection to common law crimes. The Saint Charles station is the same location where four female, American students were sprayed with acid last month.

Following France’s deadly terror attacks in November 2015, soldiers’ presence in busy, popular areas has increased as part of Operation Sentinelle, which currently entails about 7,000 French soldiers stationed at the country’s major tourist sites, train stations and airports. A state of emergency began in France after the Paris attacks and is due to expire this November once the country’s leaders vote on its anti-terrorism law this week. Given the high amount of French terror attacks in the past two years, the state of emergency has been extended six times. Some elements of the emergency state’s regulations are expected to be incorporated into the anti-terrorism law.

French President Emmanuel Macron responded to the attack on Twitter, writing in French, “[I am] deeply outraged by this barbaric act...I salute the military and police officers who responded with...efficiency.”

Motives for the attack are still unclear, but officials believe that the incident could have been far worse. “The presence of Sentinelle soldiers, their speed and efficiency ensured that the death count was not bigger,” said police union official Stephane Battaglia.

Prince Harry Kissed Meghan Markle at the Invictus Games, & Now I'm Ready for Them to Get Married

If you weren't a fan of Prince Harry before, the past week's press of him at Toronto's Invictus Games has probably changed your mind. From befriending a toddler to sharing some PDA with girlfriend Meghan Markle, the prince has also continued his massive support of injured servicemen and women by attending several of the Games' sporting events. To top off this Harry overload, the Invictus Games' closing ceremony brought us one of the greatest moments yet: Prince Harry kissing Markle in (semi) public.

PEOPLE reports that Prince Harry was initially in a VIP box for Saturday's epic ceremony, which included performances from Bruce Springsteen and Kelly Clarkson, among others. Markle was in another luxury box alongside her mom Doria Ragland. Things have to be pretty serious when you invite your mom to see your boyfriend at work, right?

Markle was likely proud when Harry delivered his closing speech, calling for the Games' participants to continue such inspiring acts. "Make an Invictus goal for yourselves," he told the crowd. "Let the examples of service and resilience that you have seen, inspire you to take action to improve something—big or small—in your life, for your family or in your community."

Harry later joined Markle in her box for the evening's concert portion, leading to an adorable-looking kiss-and-cuddle session.

Could these two get any cuter?

These two can take their time in their relationship, but after this week, I'm more than ready for an engagement announcement. According to royal etiquette experts, showing affection in public is even a great sign of how serious a royal's relationship may be. No pressure, Harry!

President Trump Accuses a Puerto Rico Mayor of 'Poor Leadership' in Hurricane Aftermath

Following the San Juan mayor's call for more U.S. assistance in Puerto Rico's recovery from Hurricane Maria, President Donald Trump accused the mayor of "poor leadership" on Twitter, creating an uproar online, The New York Times reports.

"I am begging, begging anyone who can hear us to save us from dying," Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz said in a Friday press conference, asking FEMA for more help. "We are dying and you are killing us with the inefficiency."

"The Mayor of San Juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump," the president's post read. "Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who was not able to get their workers to help."

Trump has received criticism for not responding as quickly to Puerto Rico relief activity as he did with Hurricanes Harvey and Irma earlier this summer. More criticism rose this weekend after it was clear that he was tweeting from his New Jersey golf club while Puerto Rican residents suffered. According to The Times, he claimed that getting help to Puerto Rico was difficult because it is an island "surrounded by water."

Cruz responded to the president's comments in an interview with MSNBC, clarifying that her criticism of the Trump administration was not a direct hit against the president. She also referenced Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan's response efforts and how even he fet he did not have enough supplies. "I was asking for help," she said of her original comments. "I wasn't saying anything nasty about the President."

"I'm fighting to save lives," she continued. "That's it. This isn't personal."

Cruz has previously gained attention this week for a now-viral photo of her in waist-deep water, assisting a civilian.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the Broadway hit Hamilton and the son of Puerto Rican immigrants, was one of many celebrities angrily responding to Trump's comments. Miranda is well-known for his positive, uplifting tweets, so this change of tone was a definite sign of the severity of the president's message.

Politicians and servicemen also responded to the controversy, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Russel Honore, a retired lietenant general who worked on the American response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, shared with CNN, "The mayor's living on a cot, and I hope the president has a good day at golf."

Amidst the negative feedback, The Chicago Tribune reports that in addition to the presence of 10,000 federal workers in Puerto Rico, recovery workers have cleared 50 percent of major roadways. Although this is an improvement, less than half of residents are said to have access to drinking water.

President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are expected to visit Puerto Rico this Tuesday.

What to Do When You Don’t Like Your Sorority

$

0

You were so excited on bid day. You learned the hand signs, made a Pinterest page of sorority crafts and even got initiated. But then—something changed. You became unhappy. After bid day and big/little reveal, when you were showered in T-shirts and love, day-to-day sorority life lost its glimmer. Maybe you weren’t clicking with the girls, or maybe you began to think that perhaps you’re not cut out for this whole sorority thing.

Being in a sorority has its ups and downs, and for some, the cons outweigh the pros. Here’s what to do if you don’t like your sorority.

1. Think about why you joined in the first place

If you’re feeling tepid about sorority life, go back to your pre-rush mindset. What made you go through recruitment? Was it the prospect of finding future bridesmaids? Making awesome networking connections? Then, think about what initially drew you to the particular chapter you’re in.

“First, I think the woman should ask herself why she joined the organization in the first place, and then what is bothering her about the organization,” says Tessa, a former chapter president at The Ohio State University. Write down what you wanted in a sorority, and then write your hesitations. If you’re going to come to a conclusion about staying or going, it’s important to have a solid list of reasons before you make the decision. Once you drop, there’s no going back, and you won’t be able to join another chapter after you’ve been initiated.

If you joined for networking connections first and sisterhood second, it could be beneficial to stay in the sorority if the chapter has a proven track record of great opportunities. But, at the end of the day, you’re putting time, money and effort into staying in your chapter—and only you can decide if it’s worth being potentially unhappy for these benefits.

2. Speak up

If you’re unhappy with your chapter, talk to someone immediately. Your sorority’s leadership wants its members to be happy, so when you’re having doubts, let someone know. “[You] should contact a trusted older member of their organization,” Tessa suggets. “Perhaps a big, mentor or older friend who can give insight into her personal journey and give advice that is centered around membership.” Tell her your hesitations and see what advice she can give you—chances are, she’s been there too!

“I think that almost everyone has a period of time when they're not sure about their sorority,” says Alex Cardenas, founder of Bows, Pearls & Sorority Girls and an alumna of Texas A&M University. Being in a sorority is never totally smooth sailing, so rest assured that what you’re feeling is probably what many of your sisters are also feeling, or have felt.

Think beyond your big, though. “The [sorority’s] president can provide a big picture view of the organization and how this woman can or cannot grow from it,” Tessa says. “I think women also should utilize their option of speaking to advisors of the chapter. These are women who are removed from the collegiate experience and can sort through situations extremely objectively, while also speaking about how their membership has affected their adult life.”

Keep in mind that you’ll remain an alumna of your chapter for the rest of your life, so if you drop in the middle of college, you may lose out on potential connections. While it may seem scary to reach out to the president or advisors, know that they above all want happy members—they’ll appreciate that you are asking for advice instead of making a rash decision!

3. Reach out

If one of your main hesitations is that you feel like you’re not clicking with the girls, reach out to sisters you don’t know yet. “I didn't find my best friends the first year I was in my sorority, and it definitely made me second guess my decision to join on multiple occasions,” Cardenas says. “The best thing to do is to really put yourself out there. If you're going to grab lunch, text some sisters and see if they want to join, try to be outgoing, and say yes when another sister sends an invite to go and do something.”

Although this is easier said than done, you may be surprised after reaching out! According to Cardenas, you have to put in the effort to create those friendships. “If you want the experience of being in a sorority and having that sisterhood, then there is no wrong sorority—it truly is what you make of it and how you look at it,” she says. “It's not four years, it's for life.”

This worked for Isabelle*, a freshman at the University of San Francisco, who initially felt like she didn’t click with her sisters. “I think the reason I have trouble relating to a majority of my chapter is because I am more on the introverted side, and most of the girls in my chapter are very outgoing and have different interests than I do,” she says. “My grand big and I both love Starbucks, so I reached out to her by asking to go grab coffee at the beginning of first semester, and we realized we had a lot in common, so we became close almost instantly!” So even if your big or the girls in your fellow pledge class aren’t besties, chances are, there’s a sister out there who you’ll love!

4. Get more involved

If you’ve been in your sorority for a year or two and are past the new member period, getting more involved on a leadership level may make your time in your chapter more worthwhile. “They always say that the more you put into your sorority, the more you will get out of it,” Cardenas says. “I was constantly involved, whether it was volunteering to be a sober driver, decorating the house for recruitment, painting a banner or serving on my executive board. Find ways to get involved and it will remind you why you joined your sorority in the first place.”

Being a leader in your sorority may also be a great way to change the things you don’t like. “Your [sorority] experience is shaped by what you decide to do,” Lauren, a former chapter president at Purdue University, says. So if something is bothering you, fix it!

5. Wait it out

If you’re a new member, you may feel out of place in your chapter. Lauren advises that members wait it out for a bit before considering dropping—at least a semester. “Younger members often feel a little awkward in the beginning because they have so many new faces to meet and get to know,” she says. “They may feel intimidated by older actives and feel insecure in their voice in the sorority.”

Unfortunately, this can really only go away with time and additional involvement. “There have been days when I've felt like I didn't have any friends among my sisters (usually at chapter meetings where my closest friends don't show up),” says Lucy*, a junior at the University of California, Los Angeles. “It's not a good feeling. But every time, whether it's after a few minutes, a few hours or a few days, a sister reminds me why I joined and that I do have friends.” Usually, your doubts may blow over if you just stay the course and wait it out.

6. As a last resort, drop

If your differences with your chapter are irreconcilable, then resigning may be a good option for you. If, for instance, you can’t afford being in your sorority, or you’re struggling with the time commitment—these are great reasons to leave. Additionally, if the organization’s values are constantly clashing with your own, then you absolutely owe it to yourself to drop. “You should be happy/proud to be a member of your sorority,” Lauren says. “If you do not feel happy, you should not feel forced to remain.”

That being said, remember that dropping is permanent. “I think women should think very hard about their decision to drop their sorority,” Tessa says, “because there is a reason that they joined and went through with their initiation, and making a rash decision about your membership in this sort of organization can lead to a lot of regret in the future.” Make a pro/con list, talk to members of the chapter’s exec board—do everything you can to make sure your decision is the right one for you—because once it’s done, it’s done.

Each sorority has different processes for dropping—but if you want to start the process, speaking with the chapter president is a good place to begin. That’s what Emma, a senior at Kenyon College, did two years ago when she dropped her sorority. She deactivated her sophomore year, and while she does miss some of the traditions and the bonding opportunities, she is glad she made the decision. “I don't regret it because it had started to feel more like a job than something I wanted to be a part of,” Emma says. “I sent an email to the whole sorority explaining that it wasn't anything about them, that I valued our friendships and my time in the organization, but that I didn't feel like it was a good fit for me anymore.” For Emma, the cons outweighed the pros—but only you can decide what’s right for you.

If, after talking to your big, the chapter president and perhaps even alumnae, you still feel unhappy, now’s the time to turn in your badge. While being in a sorority can have its ups and downs, you shouldn’t have to be miserable!

All the Horror Movies You Need to Stream Before Halloween

$
0
0

If you’re a Halloween fanatic (who isn’t?), you've scheduled times throughout October to cram in as many horror movies as possible before All Hallows' Eve. Whether you love to hide behind your hands during the Halloween horror marathon or watch your friends get scared, we've found all the best horror movies to stream before October 31.

1. The Conjuring

Where to Stream: HBO Go

Are you really celebrating Halloween if you don’t watch at least one movie in which an innocent family tries to eradicate a supernatural entity that’s manifested in their house?

2. The Babadook

Where to Stream: Netflix, Hulu

This movie follows a single mother and her awful son, but shit goes down after she reads her son a pop-up book. Weird stuff just keeps happening, but we don’t want to spoil too much about the film. Other than the fact that the son is the real monster in this film—jk, not really. Seriously, this movie is better than birth control.

3. Children of the Corn

Where to Stream: Amazon, Hulu

If you’re a Stephen King fan, then you probably already watch this movie every October (and every month in between). If you aren’t already terrified of children, this movie will solidify your fear.

4. Oculus

Where to Stream: Netflix (Canada, India, and Japan only)

Love films about supernatural phenomena with a twist? This is the perfect one for you. It follows two siblings and a possessed mirror while the siblings try to prove the creepy crap the mirror does.

5. Clown

Where to Stream: Netflix

If you need a palette cleanse from the It remake, which was more laughable than scary, Clown is certain to make your irrational fear of clowns resurface. This movie doesn’t involve any sewer clowns. Instead it follows a loving father who puts on a clown costume for his son’s birthday party. However, the costume begins to fuse with his body, and it just escalates from there.

6. The Haunting in Connecticut

Where to Stream: Amazon, Netflix

This movie essentially answers what would happen if you moved into an old mortuary. Hint: nothing good. The only thing more frightening than a haunted ex-mortuary turned residential home is the fact that this movie is based on an actual haunted house.

7. Poltergeist

Where to Stream: HBO Go

If you haven’t seen this classic scary movie, what are you doing with your life? It's about a poltergeist that kidnaps a child, which is only made creepier by the fact that the production used real human skeletons. Apparently prop skeletons weren’t good enough? Did we mention several members of the cast also passed away shortly after production of the trilogy? It spawned the theory of the Poltergeist"curse."

8. The Silence of the Lambs

Where to Stream: Hulu

This movie follows an FBI trainee who interrogates an apprehended cannibalistic serial killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, to catch a similar serial killer (Buffalo Bill). Though the movie might not be family-friendly (unless your family has some liberal opinions about cannibalism), it’s an exceptional adaptation of the Ted Tally novel.

9. 28 Days Later

Where to Stream: Amazon

What happens after a “zombie” outbreak? This film explores the even more frightening parts of human nature during a crisis. After all, what Halloween horror movie marathon would be complete without a zombie flick? And by zombies, I don’t mean those slow-moving corpses on The Walking Dead. I mean real zombies that, you know, run. TWD fans, sorry, not sorry.

10. 28 Weeks Later

Where to Stream: Amazon

After all, the first film kind of leaves you wondering what the hell happens next. This sequel to 28 Days Later answers all your questions about what would happen if someone totally and completely effed up quarantining a zombie apocalypse, repopulating the world and understanding overall virus transmission. Because these are the real questions everyone should ask in a post-apocalyptic movie.

11. Jeepers Creepers

Where to Stream: Xfinity

If you love watching movies about killer humanoid creatures that treat you like organ farms, you’ve found your ideal Halloween horror movie. Or if you just want to watch Justin Long before his comedy days, here you go! Seriously, the creature in this movie is virtually unstoppable and is bound to make it difficult for you to fall asleep, travel through rural Florida orturn your back on scarecrows ever again.

12. Raw

Where to Stream: Netflix

This movie is essentially a warning against college hazing. Seeing as the main character, who starts off as a vegetarian, is coerced into eating a raw rabbit kidney and then develops an insatiable hunger for raw meat. If you get queasy about blood—even fake blood—you might not want to watch this one.

13. Hostel

Where to Stream: Hulu

Despite this movie being used as a documentary by every overprotective parent before their child goes on spring break, it depicts a chilling scenario of what could happen to anyone.

14. Carrie

Where to Stream: Amazon, Hulu

In an ultimate underdog story, a teen develops some supernatural abilities to get revenge on her bullies and abusive mother. We get it—violence is never the answer…except when you have telekinetic powers and everyone around you is a dick. While there was a 2013 remake of the film, the original is the better option if you don’t have the time to read the Stephen King novel.

15. Lights Out

Where to Stream: Netflix (in select countries), Amazon (with Cinemax free trial)

This movie exacerbates nearly everyone’s childhood (and sometimes adulthood) fear: the dark. You could also watch the short film that made the full movie a success. Warning: Do not watch this before bed!

9 Beauty Products You Should Never Share With Your Friends

$
0
0

You know the saying, sharing is caring, but how true is this motto when it comes to your go-to beauty products? Unfortunately (or maybe, fortunately), your favorite glam tools may be better left to your use and your use only. Read below for nine beauty products you should never share.

1. Tweezers

Wait, what? At first thought, tweezers might not seem that controversial, but they are definitely not something you want to share. From popping pimples to cleaning under dirty nails, you never know just how your friends are using their pair of pluckers.

2. Lipsticks or glosses

Believe it or not, sharing your favorite brand new matte lipstick with your bestie is actually an easy way to spread germs or infections. So, the next time your BFF has a birthday, get her her own version of that top-of-the-line lip kit she can't get enough of. Trust us, you'll both be happier (and safer)!

3. Makeup sponges

These are one of the biggest criminals on the list. With so many open pores, makeup sponges should never be shared. Make sure you are washing your own makeup sponges once a week and only using them on clean skin! It's not worth the risk.

4. Tub of lotion

Lotions that come in a tub or jar are actually adorable and extremely convenient, but you should probably shy away from letting your friends dig in (literally) to your favorite body butter. Dipping your hands in a container of lotion or balm is a quick way to spread bacteria—even if your friends are washing their hands—many different fingers are sure to spread germs.

Related: 8 Weird Reasons You Might Be Breaking Out

5. Mascara

This one probably doesn't come as a surprise, but it's definitely worth mentioning. Eyelids and eyelashes are home to a plethora of bacteria—and an individual can have no visible symptoms of an eye infection when they first contract it. Be safe and keep your mascara to yourself, collegiettes!

6. Razors

As you can probably imagine, razors are extremely dirty. From blood to body hair, it’s definitely a tool that should only be used by you.

Any bacterium that may be hiding on the surface of your skin is likely to be picked up by your razor. If you share with even your closest friend, you are spreading these germs to both of your bodies. Avoid it at all costs!

7. Toothbrushes

For some of you, this is already gross AF ––but for others, sharing your toothbrush with your SO or BFF is probably a crime you're guilty of committing. In fact, a survey by Irish Health found that one in three people admit to sharing their toothbrush.

There are many health risks associated with sharing your toothbrush, and one major risk is the spreading of blood-borne illnesses. Think about it: Gums can bleed when you brush your teeth! When someone else borrows your brush, they might be exposed to this blood (amongst other germs).

8. Hairbrushes

We know you probably didn't expect to see this one on the list. However, in addition to the spreading of lice, sharing your personal hairbrush with others can also spread ringworm fungus––ew! Play it safe and keep your personal hairbrush to yourself.

9. Deodorant

Every collegiette has shared her deodorant (or borrowed a friend's) at least once in her lifetime, and we don't blame you! Nobody likes to sweat or smell bad. However, it might be time to start carrying your own deodorant with you at all times. Sharing your smell-good stick with your friend can transfer bacteria, hair and skin cells between the two of you. Not only is that just plain gross, but it also has the potential to lead to infection.

When it comes to beauty and self-care, your own well-being should always be the main priority. Next time your BFF asks to borrow your makeup, make sure you know what she can - and cannot - use. You'll both be happier (and healthier) because of it!

How She Got There: Sofia and Isabella Mandich, Co-Creators of Synchronicity App

Names: Sofia and Isabella Mandich
Ages: 15
Job Titles and Descriptions: Co-creators of Synchronicity
Years in school: Sophomore high-school students
Website:www.synchronicityapp.com
Twitter Handle:@syncmusicapp
Instagram Handle:@synchronicityapp

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

SM: We are both in tenth grade in a French academic program, so school is our first priority. We also play tennis on our high school team and love spending our free time coming up with new features for our apps or discussing ideas for brand new apps as our interests grow and our knowledge expands. Therefore, a typical day for us would be to go to school, finish our homework, on certain days practice tennis or play matches during the season, and have discussions with each other about changes we’re making to our current apps as well as new app ideas.
IM: Our current job (besides being a high school student, of course) is to work on our apps, meaning making any decisions related to our current projects that involve changes to features based on research or user feedback, brainstorming new marketing ideas or coming up with new ideas to keep our apps growing and relevant.

What is the best part of your job?

SM: My favorite part about creating apps is that the iOS platform lets me express my personal interests in a creative way and share them with other people. In addition, it is a great feeling to see people interested in a product you came up with and helped develop.
IM: The best part is knowing that you are creating something that people will use and hopefully enjoy or find useful.

How did you come up with the idea for your app, Synchronicity?

SM: We came up with Synchronicity while searching for songs on our cousin’s phone. We realized that it is inefficient to take someone’s phone and scroll through all of their songs to find one that you might like and eventually download on your own phone. We wanted to create a way to compare music quickly and efficiently but also make it interesting, which is why we came up with the Synchronicity index that shows you how compatible you are with your friends in music.
IM: We never thought that music suggestions by strangers were accurate at all, so instead we would always look through each other’s phones to find new music. We realized that the most effective and interesting way to discover new music is through your friends, and that is how Synchronicity came to be.

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

SM: I was once listening to a talk given by a parent, a successful entrepreneur, at our school, and the one thing he said that resonated with me the most was that success isn’t having the best job or most money, but if you are happy and enjoy what you do, you have succeeded.
IM: Whenever I find myself in a challenging situation, I think of my dad’s story. He moved to New York from Montenegro speaking no English when he was 16. He did great in college because he worked extra hard in science and math, but also was able to get on a tennis team. His story is inspiring because he had to overcome quite a few obstacles to integrate into a new society successfully, so this always gives me perspective on any difficult situations I have to deal with. I always have hope that if I apply myself, I will most likely succeed in what I have started.

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

SM: One mistake that we made was that for the first app we created, we wanted to wait for the app to be absolutely perfect before releasing it. Since then, we learned that it is more important to release a good app that you can then improve with new features and new updates based on comments from your users.
IM: We always made sure that our apps are great products but didn’t always develop marketing plans – we are still learning how to do this. We definitely learned how much marketing matters when you are trying to get your new product noticed. This applies to any product, not only apps.

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

SM: The most surreal moments I have had while working on apps were both times we got accepted to attend Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference as student scholars in 2015 and 2016. I feel that attending the conferences was a great learning experience, and it was a wonderful way to meet many people that share our interests and passion for bringing technology to good use. It gave us confidence that as girls, we can make it in a world of technology still mostly dominated by men.
IM: The most surreal moment for me was when Synchronicity got featured in the App Store. It helped me realize the progress we have made throughout the years of learning, and that it is definitely a career worth pursuing.

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

SM: I would tell them not to be afraid to ask for help. In my opinion, the best way to start developing apps is to do it with friends or family who may be interested in different aspects of app development. A lot of the time, you can find the help that you need among the people you know. I am sure this can be applied to anything that you would like to start while you are in college.
IM: I would tell this person not to be discouraged by such gigantic competition where it may seem like it’s not even a career worth pursuing. I never let the tough competition get in the way because I firmly believe that if you are passionate about something and work diligently on it, you will do well and find creative ways to make it a success. And then, of course, the longer you stick with it, the more lessons you learn, the better your app or any product gets.

More than 50 people were killed and hundreds were injured after a gunman opened fire on an outdoor country music festival in Las Vegas on Sunday night a little after 10 p.m., Las Vegas Metro Police Department (LVMPD) confirmed in a press briefing early Monday morning.

According to Las Vegas Sheriff Joseph Lombardo, the gunman used an automatic weapon to fire at the crowd from the 32nd floor of a hotel as country singer Jason Aldean performed his set at the Route 91 Harvest festival at the Mandalay Bay Resort.

The New York Times reports that police also said that the shooter was killed on the scene and has been identified as a 64-year-old man — Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada. Police said he killed himself before they entered the room where they also found ten different rifles.

Sheriff Lombardo also confirmed via the LVMPD's Facebook page that there was only one shooter at the one location and that police are looking for "an associate of the lone gunman (identified as Marilou Danley) for questioning.

Police also confirmed that at least two off-duty officers were killed on the scene and that two on-duty LVMPD officers were injured during the shooting: "One is in stable condition after surgery and the other sustained minor injuries," they wrote on the LVMPD Twitter.

Concert attendees and performers have described a chaotic scene of hearing what sounded like "firecrackers," the band playing on, before realizing it was gunfire. Performer Jake Owen told NBC News that he was standing near Aldean when the shots began and ran to take shelter in his bus where he said the sound of gunfire continued.

"It got faster and faster, almost like it was an automatic rifle. At that point, everyone on stage started running everywhere," Owen said. "It wasn't something that was quick. It was chaos for a pure seven to ten minutes."

President Donald Trump took to Twitter early on Monday to offer "condolences and sympathies" to victims of the attack: "My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible  Las Vegas shooting. God bless you!"

Mandala Bay Resort, the venue, also tweeted out a statement thanking first responders and offering thoughts and prayers to those affected.

Attendees at other events on the strip also reportedly said that several of their buildings were put on lockdown and the shows were stopped when they first heard the gunfire. Individuals who were evacuated into nearby buildings on the strip said, around 9 a.m. that they hadn't recieved any information or direction on evacuation plans, according to the BBC and local journalists on Twitter.

This story will be updated as more develops.

HC Wake-Up Call: A Canadian Terror Attack, Ex-Congressman Who Threatened Reporter Plans to Run Again & Teenage Football Players Are Kicked Off Team After Taking a Knee

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

A Canadian Attack Is Being Investigated as an Act of Terror

A man in Edmonton, Canada, stabbed a police officer and later struck four pedestrians with his U-Haul truck on Saturday, The Washington Post reports. Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht confirmed that the related incidents were being investigated as an act of terrorism and that an Islamic State flag was found in the car the suspect was driving before harming the officer. The man was arrested after striking the officer with his car outside a football stadium, sending him 15 feet into the air and then stabbing him. The attacker was later pulled over in a U-Haul less than four hours later, drove away and began deliberately hitting pedestrians.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded to the attacks in a statement, saying, "Edmonton is a strong and resilient city, and I am confident that its citizens wil support one another to overcome this tragic event."

A Former Congressman Who Once Threatened a Reporter Is Running for Office Again

Former Republican Congressman Michael Grimm once went to jail for tax evasion, but that's not even the most concerning thing about him. Before ending up in prison, Grimm once threatened to throw a NY1 reporter off a U.S. Capitol balcony after the writer asked about his campaign finances. Clearly, Grimm isn't too worried about how this little detail will affect his future: the politician has announced that he plans to run for his former spot in New York's 11th Congressional District. That area must be so proud of its local government.

Two High School Athletes Are Kicked Off Their Teams for Taking a Knee

After protesting during the national anthem at a Friday football game, cousins and teammates Cedric Ingram-Lewis and Larry McCullough were reportedly kicked off their Texas high school team. Ingram-Lewis and McCullough, students at Victory and Praise Christian Academy, had been warned by their coach beforehand that anyone who protested would be disciplined. During the anthem, Ingram-Lewis raised his fist while McCullough kneeled.

Head coach Ronnie Mitchem has reportedly served in the military. "I'm a former Marine," he told The Houston Chronicle. "That just doesn't fly and they knew that. I don't have any problems with these young men. We've had a good relationship. They chose to do that and they had to pay for the consequences."

What to look out for...

Nowadays, literally any kind of concept has a special day dedicated to it. Today is no exception: October 2 is Name Your Car Day, which I bet you didn't know existed. If you're like me and your car is your number one bae, now's the time to find it a name!

Country Singer Jake Owen Gives Harrowing Account of Being on Stage During Las Vegas Shooting

In the aftermath of Sunday night’s mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, country singer Jake Owen—who was on stage during the attack—has spoken out about the “chaotic” experience, Cosmopolitan reports.

“It got faster and faster, almost like it sounded like it was an automatic rifle. You could hear it ringing off the tops of the rafters of the stage,” Owen told the Today show just hours after the attack. “That’s when you saw people fleeing. At that point, everyone on stage just started running everywhere possible. It was pretty chaotic for sure.”

Owen was on stage with fellow country singer Luke Combs and headliner Jason Aldean when a shooter opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

“I just kind of ran like everyone else. At one point, I was crouched down behind a cop car with about 20 other people, that were people who had just come to the show,” Owen said. “Everyone’s asking if everyone’s okay. There was blood on people. You can see a couple of folks in the street that looked like they had been shot, lying there.”

Eventually he made it to his tour bus and hid inside as the gunfire continued. “It wasn’t something that just was quick,” he said. “It was chaos for a pure 7-10 minutes.”

Owen shared his love for his daughter Pearl on Twitter when he heard the gunshots. He later tweeted thanks to the Las Vegas police and called the event “unimaginable.”

Combs also tweeted to verify he and his crew were safe and to send his love.

Aldean posted on Instagram, calling the night’s events “beyond horrific.”

Over 50 people were killed and more than 500 were injured, making the Las Vegas shooting the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

5 Reasons Why Your Boobs Hurt

$

Just like Karen in Mean Girls used her boobs to predict when it was already raining, yours can let you know what’s going on with your body. Whether your girls are alerting you about your period or hormones being on the fritz, it’s important to pay attention to when your boobs are bothering you. It could even be something you need to see your doctor about! Read on for more about different types of pain, varying from tightness to aching.

1. Your bra doesn’t fit

Bra shopping is, arguably, the worst. With so many different brands and types, it can hard to figure out what bra is right for you. If you have a bigger chest, you could be feeling soreness in your boobs, your back and shoulders from improper bra support -- especially when exercising.

Christina Degraffenreid, a Victoria’s Secret Sales Associate in New Jersey, says 80 percent of women are wearing the wrong bra size, “In general when wearing a bra, the band on the back should lay even to the lower bust of your bra,” she says. “The adjusters should lay at the crease of your armpit, and the bra should be worn on the last clip/clasp until the bra actually stretches out.”

Sometimes, your bra can cause pain even if it is the right size. With all of the different styles and support, your boobs need a break. Francesca Furey, a freshman at Temple University says, “If I don’t let my boobs hang loose, they start to hurt.” If going braless in public isn’t your style, try taking it off when you get home or trying a lighter bra like a bralette to let your boobs sit naturally.

2. Your birth control is causing a hormone overload

Breast pain is often associated with your period because there are more hormones circulating your body than usual. The same goes for birth control because your body is receiving a small dose of hormones. Depending on your hormone levels at the time, one dose of birth control can cause your body to react. Dr. Majorie Dejoie says, “The slightest shift in estrogen during one's cycle can result in significant swelling and discomfort.” Simply taking an Advil or putting heat on your breasts can help with any pain you may be feeling during this time.

Juliana Collins, a senior at Temple University says, “When I switched birth controls, my boobs were so tender. I would have to lay down and put a heating pad on, but as my body got used to the new pills, I noticed the pain only happened around the time of my period.” If you notice your boobs are constantly tender and hurting you, consult with your doctor to see if the birth control is the culprit.

3. You’re going too hard at Starbucks

We all need that caffeine kick to get us through our busy schedules, but caffeine is just like everything else -- it’s only good in moderation! “Drinking too much caffeine makes my boobs hurt! It happens to me all of the time,” says Alexa Zizzi, a junior at Temple University. If you know you’re consuming a lot of caffeine, considering limiting it to one cup of coffee or caffeinated beverage per day and see if your boobs are still tender or sore. It could save you a trip to the doctor and some cash along the way.

Dr. Cynthia Miller says, “Physicians have that over time, that [caffeine] contributes to fibrocystic breast disease and pain.” Who knows? Maybe you’ll find out you’re still a superhero without your daily five cups of joe!

4. You pulled a muscle

Maybe you got too ambitious at your strength training class or perhaps you forgot to stretch, but your boob pain could actually be from pulling a muscle. If you’re experiencing tightness on one side of your chest, or your range of motion isn’t as wide, all signs point towards a pulled pectoral muscle.

Megan Nino, a personal trainer at Philadelphia’s 12th Gym says, “Your pectoral muscles are located on your chest under your breasts. If you do feel any pain in your breasts or chest after a workout, it would be best to consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis.” For those of you who have a bigger bust or have experienced breast pain from working out, Megan has the perfect (supportive) solution for you. “If your breasts hurt while working out, sometimes using a regular bra and putting a sports bra over can help,” she says.

5. It’s your period

As if the cramps, tampons, and headaches weren’t enough, your period can also cause pain in your boobs. From tenderness to soreness, your period has an effect on your boobs and it can simply be a reminder that your period is on its way or is already here.

The breast pain you experience during your period is called cyclic pain, meaning it happens at the same time every month. Dr. Miller says, “Cyclical breast pain is not usually caused by breast cancer or other serious breast problems.” While soreness or tenderness in your boobs can be expected every month, it’s still no fun. Instead of toughing it out, focusing on reducing the pain for yourself!

Megan says, “Electrolytes and foods with anti-inflammatory properties can be very beneficial for cramping and pain.” If you want an easier period, try leafy greens, veggies, blueberries, turmeric and coconut water, suggests Megan. You may want to binge on Sour Patch Kids and Cheetos, but trading in the junk food for a salad or a smoothie is what the doctor and your body ordered.

As is the case with any other health issue, it’s always best to consult your doctor if you're having constant pain! Dr. Dejoie says any symptom that seems out of the ordinary, probably is, and you should get it checked out. “If the quality of the pain is sudden and sharp, if the pain doesn't respond to any treatment they try such as anti-inflammatory or warm compress, or stretch massage, if you notice bruising, skin color change, difference in size of the breasts and if the breast are producing any atypical fluids (blood, milk/lactation without being pregnant, puss),” says Dr. Dejoie. It’s important to always listen to the signals your body is giving you because the earlier you act on pains or aches, the easier it will be to recover.

Here's How You Can Help The Victims Of The Las Vegas Shooting, Wherever You Are

Approximately 58 people were killed and 515 injured, according to ABC News, at the Route 91 Harvest Festival on the Las Vegas strip on Sunday night after a shooter (who police identified as Stephen Paddock) opened fire on concertgoers from a 32nd floor window of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. If you, like the rest of the nation, woke up on Monday morning to the news of the Las Vegas shooting filled with dread and the desire to help those affected by the horrific event, there are a few ways to provide assistance during this tragic time.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, in a released statement, are now asking for blood donations to help save the lives of the 515 that were injured.

“Anyone wishing to help is asked to donate blood for the injured victims of the Strip shooting. United Blood Services will start taking donations at 7 a.m. at two locations: 6930 W. Charleston in Las Vegas or 601 Whitney Ranch Drive in Henderson,” the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said in the statement. “UMC will also be hosting a blood drive in conjunction with United Blood Services. It will be held at UMC’s Delta Point Building located at 901 N. Rancho Lane. There will be updates as to the exact time of the blood drive as more information is available.”

According to The Huffington Post, donors were already lining up Monday morning to help the victims of the shooting before blood donations centers even opened their doors.

For those of us who are not in the Las Vegas area but would still like to help the victims and their families, the Southern Nevada chapter of the American Red Cross is accepting donations, Newsweek reports.

You can also donate to the GoFundMe account started by the Chairman of the Clark County Commission, Steve Sisolak, to “provide relief and financial support to the victims and families of the horrific Las Vegas mass shooting,” according to Newsweek.

Outside of donations, if you're driven to inspire some legislative change following this event, there's options for that as well. According to Newsweek, Nevada has more lax guns laws than most states and allows its citizens to open carry their firearms without a permit. Furthermore, the House of Representatives is currently discussing legislation that would “ease up on rules concerning gun silencers.

So, if you want to participate in this discussion and change gun laws, a good place to start would be to call your Representatives. (You can find information on how to contact your Representative here.)

If you are looking for loved ones that may have been affected by this incident and are currently missing, you are asked to call 866-535-5654. Facebook has also turned on its safety check feature for those in the Las Vegas area to let their loved ones know that they are safe, HuffPost reports.

It’s during times like these where we must join together and help those that desperately need our assistance, support and love. Luckily there's no shortage of ways to get involved and help the people who are hurting.

What You Should Know About The Gun Silencer Bill Everyone Is Talking About After The Las Vegas Shooting

After a gunman, Stephen Paddock, fatally shot 58 people and injured 515 individuals attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival from a 32nd floor window of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, concern over a GOP-sponsored bill currently being considered that would roll back regulations on gun silencers has only increased.

According to ThinkProgress, witnesses of the Las Vegas shooting described a scene of chaos, with concertgoers and police officers running in all directions since they were unable to pinpoint exactly where the gunshots were originating from. Critics now argue that in the aftermath of this horrific incident, if shooters were able to get the hands on gun silencers more easily, it would make it even more difficult for law enforcement to distinguish where the gunfire is coming from.

Hillary Clinton took to Twitter on Monday morning to criticize the deregulation on silencers, especially after the tragedy in Las Vegas. “The crowd fled at the sound of gunshots. Imagine the deaths if the shooter had a silencer, which the NRA wants to make easier to get,” Clinton wrote.

In a joint letter of opposition, several city police chiefs from across the nation wrote, “The widespread and uncontrolled distribution of silencers to an unwary civilian population, combined with the sheer number of firearms freely available in America is a step in the wrong direction and will result in tragedy, including violence directed at police officers that will be difficult or impossible to investigate effectively,” Star Advertiserreports.

The bill in question, the Sportsmen Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act (SHARE Act), would remove gun silencers from the list of regulated items under the 1934 National Firearms Act. The Republican Party has argued that this is for the benefit of hunters and recreational shooters to protect them from hearing damage, Star Advertiser reports.

“It isn’t a silencer because it still makes sound, but what it does is cuts the percentage of the noise down to make shooting sports a little nicer for people’s hearing,” Rep. Doug LaMalfa said.“There’s a lot of false narrative being driven by this. Anything to do with making guns more available or more convenient for people is going to find opposition by the left.”

Rep. Mike Thompson, according to Star Advertiser, is an avid hunter himself but still opposes the bill and its implications for law enforcement and American citizens.

“What it does is it disperses the sound, so you can’t identify where the sound is coming from," Thompson said. “It puts both law enforcement and the public at risk.”

Opponents of this bill, such as David Chipman, senior policy advisor for Americans for Responsible Solutions and a former special agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, think that deregulating silencers could lead to even more gun violence.

According to ThinkProgress, in his testimony to Congress in September, Chipman told Congress that they were  "promoting a bill that would make a [shooting] potentially even more dangerous by putting silencers in the hands of criminals, and making it difficult for people — including law enforcement officers — to identify the sound of gunshots and locate an active shooter.”

Furthermore, in his testimony, Chipman mentioned how a hearing on the bill was originally supposed to be held in June on the exact same day that a gunman opened fire at a Congressional baseball practice. “Lives were spared that day because people recognized the unique sound of gunfire and were able to take cover,” Chipman said.

After Speaker of the House Paul Ryan offered his condolences on Twitter to the victims of the Las Vegas shooting, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi retorted, “@SpeakerRyan, it’s time for action. Congress must create a Select Committee on Gun Violence.”

According to Star Advertiser, a spokesman for House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy would not say when the bill, along will another GOP-sponsored bill that would allow individuals to carry concealed weapons in any state if it is allowed in the state where they live, would come to the floor, but it is believed that the bills will come to the floor soon.

Pelosi said Republicans have the votes to pass both bills, but Democrats will try to block them with a filibuster in the Senate, Star Advertiser reports.

Kendall Jenner Finally Breaks Her Silence on Pepsi Ad, Says She Felt 'F--king Stupid'

Yes, we're still talking about that Pepsi commercial. On Sunday night’s episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kendall Jenner finally opened up about the backlash she received because of her protest-themed Pepsi commercial in April. The ad, which showed Jenner solving a conflict by handing a police officer a can of Pepsi, was pulled almost immediately.

In a confessional-style interview, Kendall explained why she took the job in the first place. "When I first got this offer, I mean, it's a huge company … the people I was following were so iconic and amazing," she said. "Michael Jackson has done it, Britney Spears has done it, Beyoncé has done it, Pink. The list goes on. So to get something like that, it was so exciting."

However, hindsight is 20/20. Once Kendall saw how people were reacting, she didn't know how to make the situation better. “I trusted everyone, I trusted the teams,” she explained. “But after I saw the reaction and I read what people had to say about it, I most definitely saw what went wrong. I was so stuck and I really didn’t know what to do that I completely shut down."

Kendall's sisters, Khloé and Kim Kardashian, also offered their takes on the backlash. "It sucks, because she’s been taking the blame for it all,” Khloé said. “Kendall tries really hard to be socially conscious and aware of the jobs that she takes … so it weighs really heavy on her heart. Her intent is never to disrespect or offend anybody."

When the negativity surrounding the ad exploded, Kendall turned to Kim—who has experienced her share of controversy—for advice on how to handle it. "Someone calls me with more bad news every five minutes,” Kendall said. “It’s so stressful.”

"This is your first real experience with something like this,” Kim told her younger sister. “It should affect you in a way where you grow from it…I just wish that you could see that there’s light at the end of the tunnel and that it will be okay if you’re just honest and open."

To make matters worse, Caitlyn Jenner—while on a book tour to promote her memoir—said she thought the commercial was “cute” and told reporters Kendall had approved the script, which Kendall denies, PEOPLE reports.

“What upsets me the most is that Dad brought up the commercial,” Kendall continued. “She doesn’t actually know what happened. She just like, word-vomits.”

In the end, it’s clear that Kendall regrets the commercial and the hurt it caused. Sobbing on camera, she emphasized, “I just feel really, really bad.”

"I would never purposely hurt someone, ever…if I knew that this was gonna be the outcome, I would have never done something like this,” she said. “But you don’t know when you’re in the moment…I just felt so f--king stupid. The fact that I would offend other people or hurt other people was definitely not the intent. And that’s what got me the most. Is that I would have ever made anyone else upset."

I hope Kendall will learn and grow from this experience.

Bella & Gigi Hadid Aren't Competitive At All About Modeling Gigs, Because Sister Love Is The Best

Clearly, the Hadid family has been blessed with the genes for beauty as well as success! Gigi and Bella have overthrown the fashion world with their own unique styles, charms and talent. With so much good happening in a single family, one can’t help but wonder if the runway has enough room for both striking sibling supermodels?

In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Bella revealed that there is no room for sibling rivalry when it comes to being on top of the fashion game. “Most of the time, our markets are completely different and if we get booked on a job and she gets it or I get it, we’re both happy for each other,” Bella explained. At first glance, Bella and Gigi’s style brandings differ starkly, with Bella sporting a darker, sleeker wardrobe throughout her photo shoots, while Gigi aims for a warmer, bubblier aesthetic. The sisters’ differences, after all, are what makes their styles so unique and inevitably ups both of their values in a variety of markets. Still, Bella considers her and Gigi’s open happiness for each other’s accomplishments as something that makes for a far more cohesive work ethic and partnership.

“There are enough jobs in the world for both of us. There’s no reason for us to be mad at each other or competitive. So, if she gets it, then good for her,” Bella continued. Now that’s a winner’s attitude in our book. The Hadids not only encourage one another to pursue their own successes, but they value each other’s company in the fashion world. In fact, they can’t live without it. “I feel it's hard to be in a business by yourself…the fact that I have her with me at all times, I can call her and ask her about things, is so amazing,” Bella remarked. We could all learn a lot from the Hadid sisters; the professional world can seem competitive but Bella and Gigi’s strong sibling bond proves that to be successful, maybe all you need is love.

5 Questions 'This Is Us' Needs to Answer in Season 2

$

The Season 2 premiere of This Is Us dropped a hint that we were desperate for all summer, providing a huge clue as to how Pearson patriarch Jack died in the ‘90s. While I’m glad that this reveal puts an end to some of the more absurd death theories, there are plenty of other storylines I seriously need to know more about this season.

Perhaps some of my greatest queries are insignificant details that only I care about, but I’m still pulling for some answers to these questions in the upcoming episodes. After all, the clock is ticking until the truth about Jack’s death is revealed, and we still have at least one more season of events and stories completely unrelated to this mystery. Below are five questions I still have about the This Is Us family and their lives.

1. Did Kate and Sophie stay friends?

In Season 1’s  “Three Sentences,” we learn that Kate’s best friend at age 10 was Sophie, who had a bit of a thing for Kevin. In a huge bombshell, it’s revealed that Sophie grew up to become Kevin’s wife, but Kevin’s pursuit of an acting career ultimately drove him to cheating and getting divorced. I definitely want more clarity about the two's backstory. How old were the couple when they married? Did they ever break up briefly in high school or college? Most importantly, I want to see if my suspicion is true and if the relationship pulled Kate and Sophie apart. We all saw Toby struggle with Kate and Kevin’s closeness in the Season 2 premiere, and perhaps Kevin’s loyalty to Kate partially comes from abandoning her in the throes of young love.

2. How did Kevin start acting?

Kevin is definitely the most unknown character so far, stirring up tons of questions about his past. The glimpses we’ve seen of teenage Kevin are him as a typical high school athlete who makes fun of Randall’s sensitivity. Somehow, that kid doesn’t strike me as someone who grows up to be an actor. I want to know when the acting bug bit Kevin, and after seeing him with a broken leg at the time of Jack’s death, my guess is that an injury and the loss of his father helped him find an emotional outlet through being onstage.

3. How did Randall and Beth meet and get together?

A recent Hollywood Reporter feature reveals that Sterling K. Brown actually suggested to the show’s writers that they include Randall and Beth’s backstory in Season 2. “Very often, you choose somebody who looks like your mom, but Randall makes this conscious choice to be with a black woman,” Brown told THR, “and I really want us to explore that.”

I don’t even know what kind of theories to make about how this power couple came to be, but I’m eager for some answers. Given that there are currently theories floating around that the redhead in that last premiere scene is Randall's high school girlfriend, I can't wait to see young Beth and Randall falling in love.

4.  What other struggles did Beth face growing up?

We know that Beth grew up in a small home with 14 other people, suggesting that she struggled far more than Randall and the rest of the Pearsons did as kids. In the Season 2 premiere, she suggests to Randall that they look into adopting an older child who has had an unfortunate life, rather than a baby. Beth likely grew up in a pretty tumultuous neighborhood, which makes me wonder if she has purposely kept this part of her past suppressed during the past few years.

5. How soon after Jack’s death did Rebecca and Miguel become a couple?

Given Rebecca’s reaction to that premiere reveal, I’m convinced she and Jack were still married when he died, which makes her present-day marriage to Miguel even more heartbreaking. We know that Miguel is a divorcee with his own kids and that Rebecca was even friendly with his ex-wife. Did they start dating once the Big Three went off to college? Was the marriage put off until the kids were proper adults? Most importantly, is Rebecca as happy with Miguel as she was with Jack at the peak of their relationship?

Knowing how these writers like to drag things out, I doubt we’ll see answers to these questions quickly, but watching the journey to those discoveries will definitely be worth it.

23 Signs You've Overloaded Your Schedule

When you signed up for 16 hours of class, three clubs and two part-time jobs, you thought you could handle it. Maybe you’d have to sacrifice a little sleep or social time now and then, but it was doable. Five weeks into the semester, you realize it only seemed like a good idea at the time—and you’ve actually piled on more than you can handle. If this sounds familiar, here are 23 signs you’ve completely overloaded your schedule.

1. You live on coffee

And people can tell when you haven’t had any.

2. You leave your house at 8 a.m. and don’t get back until 8 p.m.

Your apartment has turned into a place where you sleep and…yeah, that’s pretty much it.

3. You barely have a social life (if you have time for one at all)

4. Or you have to sacrifice sleep in order to have a social life

Sleep is for the weak.

5. You get competitive when someone else says they’re busy because you know your schedule is probably worse

You have yet to meet someone who truly understands your level of self-induced stress.

6. You feel overwhelmed pretty much all the time

You take things day-by-day because you know you’ll lose the ability to function if you think about things in the long run.

7. You have to carry around outfit changes because you never have time to go home and change

Between work, meetings, class and maybe even the gym, you end up changing your outfit in your car or in a bathroom at least once a day.

8. You’re already counting down the days until Thanksgiving and Christmas break

Yes, you know it’s bad to wish your life away. Yes, you’re stressed enough that you’re going to do it anyway.

9. You have to say no to things you really want to do because you don’t have time

Your schedule is already so crazy that when someone invites you to do something that takes more than a couple hours, you usually have to say no because of some other commitment.

10. Or you have a problem saying no to people and your schedule reflects that

Maybe it’s volunteer activities that are eating your schedule up because you don’t know how to say no once in a while. (Tip: It’s okay to say no sometimes.)

11. You plan your day out by the hour

Or by the half hour or by every 15 minutes…

12. To the point where your life is literally just a really long to-do list

IT NEVER ENDS.

13. You live in the library

Because chances are, your roommates are too distracting to get anything done at home.

14. Sometimes you just forget to eat

Which just goes to show how bad your schedule is because you normally LOVE food.

15. You’re a pro at multitasking purely out of necessity

There’s no way you’d be able to do all of this without doubling or tripling up.

16. If you ever lost your planner, you’d actually curl up in a ball and cry until you found it

Without your planner, you would never be able to get everything done in time. If it’s not in your calendar, it doesn’t get done.

17. Hearing that something on your schedule was canceled is better than pretty much anything else

You have a whole two hours you hadn’t counted on. Should you do more work or actually (wait for it) relax?

18. You’ve woken up in a panic in the middle of the night thinking you forgot to do something

19. You spend your weekends catching up on work instead of having fun or relaxing

And you feel perpetually exhausted as a result.

20. And you’ve lost your ability to sleep in

You used to be able to sleep in until noon. Now your body automatically wakes you up at 7 a.m. whether you like it or not. (Spoiler alert: You don’t like it.)

21. The only things you have time to eat are microwaveable or to-go

Frozen meals and takeout are your lifelines.

22. You no longer know what free time is or what to do with it

What is this “free time” people keep talking about? How are you supposed to just lay there and watch Netflix without thinking about all of your responsibilities?

23. And when you actually go out, you go way overboard and party a little too hard

Time to get a month’s worth of stress out of your system.

Maybe next semester you’ll be a little easier on yourself—but probably not.

Following the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, in which over 58 people were killed and more than 500 were injured at a Las Vegas concert, a mother of one of the victims of the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting has spoken out.

Nelba Márquez-Greene, whose 6-year-old daughter was among the 20 children killed in the 2012 shooting, took to Twitter on Monday to call out Congress for their lack of action on gun control laws following tragedies such as the ones in Las Vegas and Sandy Hook.

"I don’t know what to say besides this is on every congressperson who said in ‘13: There is simply nothing we could do," Márquez-Greene tweeted. "Every day, I am stunned by the level of trauma (direct or vicarious) congress is willing to make us suffer through."

"Their lack of courage and/or ability to take meaningful action on issues that most matter: healthcare, violence, climate, etc is outrageous," she added in a later tweet.

Much like in the aftermath of other mass shootings, discussion of gun legislation has only increased — especially considering the fact that Congress is considering a bill that would roll back regulations on gun silencers (devices that would make it even more difficult for police to find and stop shooters). Hopefully, Márquez-Greene's message will be a wake up call to congressmen and women that it's time to take action instead of only offering "thoughts and prayers."
