Chip & Joanna Gaines Announce 'Fixer Upper' Will End After Season 5

Chip and Joanna Gaines, beloved couple and home improvement power team, have decided to end their hit HGTV show, Fixer Upper, after its upcoming fifth season, PEOPLE reports. The pair wrote a farewell announcement on their blog Tuesday morning.

"It is with both sadness and expectation that we share the news that season 5 of Fixer Upper will be our last," they wrote to their fans. "While we are confident that this is the right choice for us, it has for sure not been an easy one to come to terms with. Our family has grown up alongside yours, and we have felt you rooting us on from the other side of the screen. How bittersweet to say goodbye to the very thing that introduced us all in the first place."

Chip and Jo first blessed our television screens in 2013, introducing themselves and their four children to millions of home fanatics. Originally from Waco, Texas, the small-town renovators became celebrities through their design and real estate empire. While the loving couple has seen plenty of business success through the years, their biggest priority has always been family.

"Our family is healthy and our marriage has honestly never been stronger," Joanna wrote. "Our plan is to take this time to shore up and strengthen the spots that are weak, rest the places that are tired and give lots of love and attention to both our family and our businesses."

With a new restaurant and second book on the way, fans can rest easy knowing they haven't seen the last of the fixer uppers. "Who knows what the future holds, but we’re excited for whatever is around the bend and in the meantime, we will definitely be staying in touch."

The fifth and final season of Fixer Upper will premiere on HGTV this November.

Chrissy Teigen Might Be Dressing Up As a Condom for Halloween

Halloween is almost here and looks like Chrissy Teigen found the perfect costume for her and her bae, John Legend––except the hint she gave was super confusing.

Last week, Chrissy took to Twitter to post a picture of her holding two packets and captioned it, "I found our Halloween costume @johnlegend." The packets looked eerily similar to condoms, and so her followers assumed she was planning on dressing up as one. The confusion was cleared as other followers recognized that she was holding packets of ramen seasoning, not condoms.

Honestly, it's not a surprise that a lot of her fans thought she was dressing up as a condom (it sounds a lot like something she'd do!). I mean, we are talking about the Chrissy Teigen that dressed up as Guy Fieri, admitted to texting her doctor about her butt rash and re-enacted The Devil Wears Prada on Snapchat.

All in all, it looks like we still don't know what Teigen is up to this Halloween, but we can bet it'll be great.

Here's How You Can Create That Viral "Flare" Highlight

Instagram user @thestudyofmakeup has over 21,000 followers for a good reason––her highlight game is out of this world. She has three levels of shine: subtle, glow and flare . And let's just say that the flare is literally a lens flare! No one seems to be on her level, so how does she do it?

The makeup artist behind the account told Allure how she gets that blinding effect. "If you want to condense the pigment in your highlight product and make it really glow, use a very dense, wet eyeshadow brush. The technique "centralizes" the product, she claims. "Most people apply their highlight with a large fan brush, [but] that will only give a more natural look."

Her highlight of choice is the Blushing Hearts Highlighter in Goddess of Love, by Makeup Revolution. It's only $7 and has undertones that match her pale skin tone. The last step? Use a setting spray to make it pop! Then find your perfect lighting and angle to get that "flare" effect. If your goal is to blind people with your highlight, you should probably be taking notes.

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Held Hands in Public, & I'm Squealing Over the Photos

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were photographed looking like the totally adorable couple they are at the Invictus Games on Monday.

Harry started the Invictus Games—an event in which wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and veterans participate in sports—in 2014. It just so happens the third annual games are being held in Toronto, where Meghan films her USA series, Suits

The couple arrived to a wheelchair tennis match hand-in-hand, and boy, was it cute!

Once they were seated, Harry and Meghan talked with each other and nearby fans.

They both looked perfectly sporty while cheering on the teams.

Look at that huge smile on Meghan's face. If these two don't give you butterflies, you might be dead inside.

The Senate Has Pulled Graham-Cassidy & Will Not Have A Vote

Senate Republicans have officially decided to give up on the Graham-Cassidy healthcare bill— considered the final attempt to repeal and replace Obamacare, The Daily Beast reports. According to a GOP aide, they reportedly decided not to hold a vote on the bill before the end of the month.

Following the announcement on Tuesday, Senators Lindsey Graham (of South Carolina) and Bill Cassidy (of Louisiana) told reporters that they didn't have enough votes to see any success with the controversial bill and that they wouldn't hold a vote without support.

"We made the decision that because we don't have the votes, we will postpone the vote," Cassidy said.

Associated Press' Erica Werner reports (via Twitter) that Senator Pat Roberts also commented on the decision and said they would "try to do this in some form in this session of congress."

The brief, yet dramatic life of this bill has seen multiple "is it dead?" moments. From the on-the-fence reactions from Senators Rand Paul (of Kentucky) and Susan Collins (of Maine), as multiple outlets reported, to the condemnation from all 50 Medicaid directors from each state (Ouch.)

The major K.O. to the legislation appeared to come, however, from Arizona Senator and former presidential candidate John McCain, who argued against any attempt to pass a highly partisan healthcare bill without all sides of the aisle involved. He claimed, essentially, that making such a huge decision that would affect so many people without that level of cooperation was unethical and undemocratic.

“We should not be content to pass health care legislation on a party-line basis, as Democrats did when they rammed Obamacare through Congress in 2009. If we do so, our success could be as short-lived as theirs when the political winds shift, as they regularly do,"McCain said in his statement late last week. "The issue is too important, and too many lives are at risk, for us to leave the American people guessing from one election to the next whether and how they will acquire health insurance. A bill of this impact requires a bipartisan approach."

Following the announcement, pro-Obamacare groups expressed relief at the delay of the vote but also noted that attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) were very much still "a threat."

While it's not a surprise to see this iteration of the Graham-Cassidy get pulled, there's still so much up in the air about future healthcare moves in Congress.

Jordin Sparks Made a Subtle but Powerful Statement While Performing the National Anthem at an NFL Game

Protests during the National Anthem swept across NFL games last weekend, and while some singers have chosen to #TakeTheKnee in solidarity, Jordin Sparks took a different approach. Before Monday night's Arizona Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys game, Jordin sang the National Anthem, and though she remained standing, she made a statement in writing.

Jordin had "Prov. 31:8-9" written on her hand. The Bible verses read, "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."

Sparks was a hot topic on social media after her performance, with many fans assuming this was her way of protesting social injustice in America and President Trump's response to it. Jordin's boyfriend, Dana Isaiah, posted a picture with the singer on Instagram with the caption, "Way to use your platform babe!"

During Jordin's performance, the Cardinals and the Cowboys linked arms and took a knee.

Many other celebrities—including John Legend, Zendaya, Uzo Aduba and Lena Dunham—have showed their support for the NFL protests on their social media platforms.

The FBI Arrested 4 NCAA Basketball Coaches, 6 Others for Fraud

The FBI has just charged and arrested four NCAA assistant basketball coaches for fraud, along with six other individuals, which are managers, financial advisers and representatives of a sportswear companies, USA Today reports.

According to ESPN, those arrested include: Arizona assistant Emanuel Richardson, Auburn assistant Chuck Person, Oklahoma State assistant Lamont Evans and Southern California assistant Tony Bland. The other six individuals listed on the court documents include: James Gatto (director of global sports marketing for Adidas), Merl Code (who left Nike for Adidas), Christian Dawkins (an NBA agent who was fired from ASM Sports for reportedly charging $42,000 to a player's credit card for Uber fees), Jonathan Brad Augustine (The League Initiative president and program director of the Adidas-sponsored 1 Family AAU program), Munish Sood (a financial adviser), and Rishan Michel (former NBA official and founder of Thompson Bespoke).

The court documents released show that the FBI and U.S. Attorney have been investigating the fraud and corruption scheme of bribing future potential student athletes to use the services of those paying off the student athletes since 2015, USA Today reports.

Among the several allegations, according to ESPN, is a payment of approximately $100,000 from a sports apparel company to a potential student athlete’s family to ensure that the student (identified as Player-10) would sign with an unnamed Kentucky university (identified as University-6), which has been alleged to be the University of Louisville.

FBI agent John Vourderis said in a statement regarding the $100,000 payment, “I have learned that in or around May of 2017, at the request of at least once coach from University-6, Dawkins, James Gatto, a/k/a “Jim,” Merl Code, Munish Sood, the defendants, and other agreed to funnel $100,000 (payable in four installments) from Company-1 to the family of Player-10. Shortly after the agreement with the family of Player-10 was reached in late May or early June, Player-10 publicly committed to University-6.”

Other allegations include a financial advisor giving Auburn coach Person nearly $91,500 over a 10-month period so Person would direct Auburn basketball players to acquire the financial advisors services upon their entering into the NBA, USA Today reports. Furthermore, it was alleged that Gato, Code, Augustine and Sod paid a potential student athlete approximately $150,000 to play basketball at a certain school in exchange for the athlete acquiring Dawkins’ services and signing with Adidas when the athlete joined the NBA.

“We were surprised to learn this morning of potential actions against one of our assistant basketball coaches by federal officials,” Oklahoma State said in response to allegations, according to ESPN. “We are reviewing and investigating the allegations. We are cooperating fully with officials. Let it be clear we take very seriously the high standards of conduct expected in our athletic department. We will not tolerate any deviation from those standards.”

USC athletic director Lynn Swann said, “We were shocked to learn this morning through news reports about the FBI investigation and arrests related to NCAA basketball programs, including the arrest of USC assistant coach Tony Bland. USC Athletics maintains the highest standards in athletic compliance across all of our programs and does not tolerate misconduct in any way. We will fully cooperate with the investigation and will assist authorities as needed, and if these allegations are true, we will take the needed action.”

Adidas, reportedly unaware of Gatto actually bribing potential student athletes, released a statement on Tuesday saying, “Today, we became aware that federal investigators arrested an Adidas employee. We are learning more about the situation. We're unaware of any misconduct and will fully cooperate with authorities to understand more,” ESPN reports.

Joon H. Kim, U.S. Attorney, said, according to ESPN, in a news conference on Tuesday, “For the 10 charged men, the madness of college basketball went well beyond the Big Dance in March. Month after month, the defendants exploited the hoop dreams of student-athletes around the country, allegedly treating them as little more than opportunities to enrich themselves through bribery and fraud schemes.”

After Her Video About Being Bullied Went Viral, This DACA Recipient Isn't Going Anywhere

A teary-eyed Paola Garcia took to Youtube in early September to address the targeted harassment and online bullying she had been receiving from a fellow student at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, after she said her school failed to discipline him or do anything to protect her.

“I reported it to the administration but, according to them, his actions don’t violate the school’s non-discrimination policy,” Garcia said.

Garcia, a senior studying psychology at the college, is also a DREAMer—meaning she is one of the 800,000 undocumented immigrants who have temporary relief from deportation under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program set into place by former President Barrack Obama in 2012. This program allows DACA recipients, people who were brought to this country at a young age (like Garcia) living as undocumented immigrants, to be able to apply for things like driver’s licenses and to legally work and pay taxes. It essentially lets them legally function in society.

And, as Garcia said in her (now viral) video, her DACA recipient status is also why the other student began to harass her —  after doxxing her by posting screenshots of her Facebook profile, Garcia said Taylor Ragg, who was also attending Transylvania University at the time, encouraged members of an online group to bully her. According to Garcia, Ragg posted her name and social media information on a far-right Facebook group called “the 10th Crusade Enthusiasts” and encouraged members of the group to “report this illegal at [his] school bragging about breaking the law.”

After Ragg shared her status and posted her name, Garcia said she received comments like “Hope you enjoy your visit back to the dirt floors of your homeland, stinky ass,” saw racial slurs aimed at both her and her boyfriend and was also sent some threats involving reporting her to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Garcia said she was confused as to why the university failed to take action at first. She said it was quite obvious to her that Ragg did in fact violate the nondiscrimination policy on campus.

Transylvania University's spokesperson Michele Sparks told Her Campus that "We have zero tolerance for bullying and harassment on our campus."

Sparks also added that Transylvania is an open and inclusive campus and strongly encourages anyone facing discrimination and bullying to come forward.

When Garcia's video went viral, Sparks said the university reached out to offer her support and tried to meet with Ragg to discuss the situation. However, Ragg was unwilling to meet with them initially. Ragg is no longer enrolled at the university. Due to federal law, Sparks could not comment any further on Ragg's departure.

When the Lexington Herald Leader reached out to Ragg for comment, he reportedly said "The Lexington Herald Leader is fake news." He did, however, provide a right-wing publication called the Narrative Times access to screenshots of emails from the University President's executive assistant requesting a meeting with him and alleged that the school had a "liberal bias."

Garcia’s experiences with bullying on her campus comes at a time when many young people in her position remain deeply anxious about their futures. Particularly now, as the life-changing program has been on the chopping block for President Donald Trump’s administration and as a culture of intolerance and hatred toward undocumented Americans has become emboldened and more outspoken. Though this isn’t the first time she has experienced discrimination, harassment and uncertainty, Garcia said that this incident has only made her stronger.

“Being undocumented and being targeted have made me learn to be loud and unapologetic,” Garcia told Her Campus. “I want to embody now more than ever, the spirit of a DREAMer.”

Garcia said she was barely two-years-old when she left her home of Guanajuato, Mexico in 1997 to come to the United States with her family and, since then, she has seen firsthand how risky and complicated it is to live as an undocumented person. She said her father only received his U.S. residency after a 14-year-long process —that came after Homeland Security issued a deportation order due to clerical errors on their paperwork.

Still, despite witnessing all the dysfunctional and at-times cruel and emotionally draining aspects of immigration in America, Garcia said it has all convinced her that now is the time to speak up and share her story.

Garcia said she has not discussed any back-up or emergency plans with her family and remains hopeful that a solution will be reached that recognizes the humanity of DACA recipients and their families.

“I think it’s understood between all of us that this is our home,” Garcia said. “And it’ll take so much more than the end of DACA to send us anywhere.”

At the moment, Congress is working on a bill that would replace DACA and potentially open up a pathway to a more permanent residency and/or citizenship for DREAMers — although there currently isn’t an existing pathway for citizenship for most DACA recipients. But, Garcia remains optimistic about the future. As she begins her final year as an undergrad at Transylvania University, Garcia said she's looking into applying to clinical psychology doctoral programs and that her dream is to be a clinical psychologist who works with underrepresented populations.

She said she ultimately hopes to become an American citizen someday, to vote and protect vulnerable people from leaders that don’t have their best interests at heart. And, of course, she plans to continue fighting and encourages anyone facing discrimination to never keep quiet or let themselves be isolated by hate.

“My advice is to speak out and reach out,” Garcia said. “There is more love in this nation than there is hate.”

Beyoncé Proves She's a Great Friend by Lifting Lady Gaga's Spirits During Her Chronic Pain Struggle

Lady Gaga has recently opened up about her struggle with chronic pain and canceled part of her tour to receive treatment for fibromyalgia. We all know how terrible it is to feel really sick and like you're letting people down, so I can only imagine how Lady Gaga is feeling. Luckily, she has an amazing support system to keep her spirits up. And that support system includes Beyoncé.

On Instagram Tuesday, Gaga shared a picture of herself wearing the sweet gift fellow music superstar Queen Bey sent her: a cozy Ivy Park sweatshirt. She wrote, “Not having a good pain day. Thank you honey B for sending me this comfy sweatshirt. Keeps me warm outside in a hammock so I can be w the trees, and the sky, and the sun and take deep breaths. Feel so lucky to have so much love.”

While this may seem like a small gesture (although any gift from Beyoncé would be pretty significant to me!), Gaga’s gratitude goes to show that we never know how big of an impact our actions may have on the lives of those around us.

Let Beyoncé’s act of kindness inspire you to spread kindness and joy to those around you!

Here's Why Twitter Won't Be Deleting Trump's North Korea Tweet

In a series of tweets on its public policy account, Twitter announced that it would not be removing President Donald Trump’s tweet from Saturday regarding North Korea that seemed to only increase the tension between the United States and North Korea, ABC News reports.

After overhearing a conversation between North Korean officials at the United Nation, according to The Washington Post, Trump tweeted, “Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at U.N. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won't be around much longer!”

North Korea responded to Trump’s statement on Monday, calling the tweet from the president a declaration of war, ABC reports. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders called the North Koreans’ allegations that the tweet was a declaration of war “absurd.”

Twitters users, according to The Washington Post, pointed out to the social media company that Trump’s tweet violated Twitter’s policy which prohibits users from “mak[ing] threats of violence or promote violence, including threatening or promoting terrorism.”

Twitter ultimately decided not to remove the president’s tweet, citing its “newsworthiness,” adding that the company is “committed to transparency and keeping people informed about what's happening in the world,” ABC News reports. The social media website has cited in the past that it is important to hear from leadership so Americans can hold them accountable.

“This has long been internal policy and we'll soon update our public-facing rules to reflect it,” one of Twitter’s public policy account’s tweets read. “We need to do better on this, and will.”

This, however, is not the first time that Twitter users have called from Trump’s tweets to be removed, or for his account to be suspended. According to The Washington Post, actor and former White House aide, Kal Penn, pushed for Twitter to take stronger actions against Trump, particularly for his comment to North Korea that the U.S. military was “locked and loaded.”

Even though it can hold its own, we can't wait to see how well the concealer pairs with the Studio Waterweight Foundation.

6 Ways to Take Advantage of Your College’s Health Center

$
0
0

When you’re at college — especially if you’re far away from home — it’s difficult to set up doctor’s appointments and get fast treatment for any health issues. That’s where the health center on your campus comes in handy. Whether you’re looking for birth control, antidepressants or treatment for minor injuries, you’ll find what you need — or at least be directed to what you need. Read on to learn how to best take advantage of your school’s health center.

1. Stop by for minor injuries, even if it’s just a small cut

The minor services at your health center, excluding medication, appointments and tests, are often free – or at least much cheaper than going to a local hospital or doctor. Don’t be afraid to stop by for minor injuries.

Dr. Rochelle Shapiro, acting chief medical officer at Florida Atlantic University says, "Condoms and small Band-Aids for an acute cut are available at the front desk and throughout the clinic for free. An after-hours Nurse Phone line is available for health-related questions." Most likely, you'll find those resources for free at your school's health center as well.

Kylie Walker, a junior at Sonoma State University, says that nothing is too small for a walk-in. “I go to my health center for just about anything that’s wrong with me because it’s absolutely free!” she says. “Even if it’s just to get Band-Aids for a cut, I make sure to utilize my health center for its expertise and friendly/helpful staff. My health motto is that it’s always better to be safe rather than sorry!”

Like Kylie says, don’t let those free resources go to waste — you’re paying a lot of money to be in college! It’s great to keep a small first-aid kit in your room as well, but feel free to head to your health center if you’re out and about.

2. Find free or discounted birth control

Colleges are all about encouraging safe sex practices, especially since most young adults are sexually active during college. Your health center will have many resources to provide you with the birth control method you’re looking for.

At Florida Atlantic University, condoms are free and birth control pills are heavily discounted. "Least expensive birth control pills are about $9 at the FAU Pharmacy," Dr. Shapiro says.

Kylie agrees. “Don’t hesitate to ask for birth control!” she says. “My health center hands out free condoms (male and female) and they will prescribe birth control via the pill if you have an appointment—though it depends on your state and its laws against women’s sexual health).” Colleges vary all across the country, but these are a few services that might be available at your center – make sure to check if they’re at your school if you’re interested!

Veronika Potylitsina, a senior at the University of Toronto, says that other sexual health items are readily available at her health center as well. “Along with free birth control, my university’s health center provided links to walk-in clinics which in turn directed me to free/discounted Plan B and pregnancy tests,” she says. “What would have been upwards of two hundred dollars ended up being so much less thanks to the resources provided by my health center.”

And it's not just birth control. Many health centers also provide free testing for STDs. Florida Atlantic University's Dr. Shapiro notes that "Testing Tuesday" happens every week, where patients can receive free, same-day testing for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and HIV. Check with your university's health center to see if you have similar benefits.

Don’t pay tons of money for your sexual health! Make sure to use the resources provided for you — they’re there for a reason. Even if you can’t find things completely free, your health center will be able to direct you to discounted options.

3. Get a doctor’s note for classes and assignments

It’s difficult to get work done when you’re sick. While some professors might let an absence or late assignment slide due to sickness, others will ask for proof — also known as a doctor’s note. Unfortunately, it’s hard to get in touch with your usual doctor when you’re far from home. That’s where your college’s health center can help out.

Christian Pierce, a junior at Florida Atlantic University, explains how convenient it can be to get a doctor’s note. “I missed a deadline for a big paper near the end of the semester due to a bad stomach bug,” he says. “I just walked into my school’s health clinic and they quickly issued me a receipt that I was in the clinic after seeing how sick I was.”

Check your health center’s policy on doctor’s notes. You can drop by and ask, or find it online. Most will write you a note after a quick check-up. Others might require you to set up a formal appointment. Either way, it’s important information to know, so make sure you find out. You don’t want to miss a big deadline due to sickness without a proper excuse. Some college health centers might not even give out doctor’s notes and will require another way to get an excused absence. Do your best to find out the policies at your school!

4. Reach out for mental health aid

Too many people discount the importance of taking care of their mental health. Thankfully, most colleges are making strides in providing students the mental support that they need. Whether you’re looking for medication or counseling, you should be able to find it on campus.

Veronika says she was able to get help from her school. “Mental health wise, reaching out to my health center regarding my anxiety and depression helped me push through the rest of my semester when I felt like I was in a rut in my mental health,” she says. “I was able to receive a doctor’s note to cover my assignments, medication and help from a professional all within the span of a few days which definitely helped ease a lot of the stress that I felt during the semester.” While some health centers may not be as quick as Veronika’s, they might have resources like hotlines that can provide you timely support and help through your problems.

Dr. Shapiro at FAU gives you an idea of what to expect. "The counseling center offers short-term therapy and their services are free. They are staffed by licensed Psychologists and Mental Health Counselors. Many groups are offered for stress management, relationships, eating issues and others," she says. "There are also urgent visits available on same day, if needed. After-hours phone consultation with a licensed therapist is available." Check with your university to see if you have similar services available.

College can definitely be stressful. Difficult classes, combined with an entirely new social environment, can be debilitating for your mental health. Make sure to get the help you need so you can continue to be your best self!

5. Find discounted medication even if you don’t have insurance

Many college health centers acknowledge student financial difficulties. When you don’t have insurance, it’s hard to find medications you need at an affordable price. Thankfully, colleges are willing to help.

Dr. Shapiro notes that prices at FAU are quite reasonable. "We have self-pay prices which are very reduced," she says. "A new patient visit is $20 to $40, and a follow-up visit is $12 to $30. Labs are also very reduced, starting at $10 for a complete blood count." Much cheaper than a traditional doctor's office!

“Medication at my health center is much less expensive whether or not you have insurance,” Kylie says. “It’s always a nice reassurance when I’m caught with an ailment mid-semester.”

Don’t be afraid to reach out to your health center for your problems, even if you don’t have insurance. They will direct you to where you can get the help you need. Many colleges offer cheap insurance specifically for their health center as well.

6. Find free or discounted care from specialists

You might think that you can only find general practice doctors at your college health center, but you’d be surprised to find out that specialty offerings are available – you just have to ask what’s offered at your specific health center. For example, many schools have a nutritionist on staff that you can meet with if you’re dealing with an eating disorder or need healthy ways to gain or lose weight.

Dr. Shapiro lists a few specialty offerings available at FAU. "We have a dentist and dental hygienist and services are at a deep discount. A dietitian is available at Owl Care and her visits are free."

In addition, even if they don’t have the specialists on staff, your health center might have discounted options on everything from massage therapists to acupuncturists. You just have to ask and find out. If you’re planning to study abroad for a semester and need to get vaccines for a specific country, your school can also provide resources so you can get that done. They might even have free flu shots when flu season comes around – Dr. Shapiro notes that free flu vaccines are available for students, staff and faculty at FAU.

If your school health center doesn’t offer a service that’s on this list or anything else you think you need to have a successful college experience, you could always try and petition for more health resources. “It’s surprising how many resources the center can have, but if they don’t have what you need, there’s definitely tons of opportunities to help them expand their resource bank and initiatives whether through the university or your student body representatives,” Veronika says.

Good luck, collegiettes! Take advantage of all your healthcare resources to do the best you can throughout the year.

3 Ways I Handle Dating With an Invisible Disability

The opinions expressed in this article are the author's own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.

It’s no exaggeration that dating is stressful for literally everyone. Sure, it’s great once you finally find your person, but taking the time to go on date after date to find that person is an ordeal. Sometimes that ordeal can be spontaneous and fun, but other times it can be an f**king train wreckinteresting. Regardless, dating is more difficult for some of us, especially for those of us who have an invisible disability. Whether you have anxiety, depression or ankylosing spondylitis, your disability isn’t typically the first thing others notice, which might seem like a positive attribute to anyone who has never been disabled. Like everything in life, having an invisible disability has its downfalls.

Being that I didn’t become disabled until the day after I turned 22, I’m essentially the ultimate before-and-after poster child for invisible disabilities. I’ve seen a clear difference of what it’s like going on dates now that I’m disabled, which naturally means that I handle and prepare for my dates a bit differently now knowing about my arthritis.

1. I'm transparent

At times, I have to be brutally honest about my disability, because many people have this misconception that people with disabilities (invisible or not) are somehow a burden to everyone who encounters them. Clearly, that’s why that one girl in my study group failed her first quiz. Obviously, she sat too close to me in class, and my invisible disability had a negative impact on her learning environment. I’m a monster. All jokes aside, a lot of the people I’ve gone on dates with think the fact that my disability doesn’t come with a warning label — like a wheelchair or a literal sign — somehow means that I’m cat-fishing my poor, naïve date. Because how dare I refuse to tell my dates the second we match on Tinder that I have a disability.

Because I’ve already experienced several past Tinder dates go AWOL because I opened up to them about my arthritis in an untimely matter (whatever the f**k that means), I try to bring up my arthritis on the first date. This might not be the most graceful approach, and it’s probably considered as “rushing” the conversation a tad. But the topic usually comes up naturally in my case. Seeing as they inevitably ask “why are you still an undergrad, if you’re 24,” to which I explain truthfully that I’ve had to take a few gap semesters off, because of my disability. Honestly, though, I don’t give a crap if I tell my dates about my disability too "soon". If they decide to ghost me because I was truthful and told them that I have an invisible disability, then I clearly don’t need them in my life.

Nevertheless, it’s up to every individual person to decide when the best time to have “the talk” with their bae is.

2. I plan ahead

My pre-date preparation can vary. Sometimes it’s as simple as going on a practice date with a friend. Seriously, nearly everyone has been to a mock interview, so why aren’t mock dates a thing yet? Seeing as my immune system didn’t feel like attacking my joints until two years ago, I used to feel less nervous about going on dates. Practice dates make me feel significantly less anxious. Other times, my preparation requires me to rearrange my typical schedule. Personally, my disability requires quite a bit of medication. While my medication makes me feel better overall, it can make me feel sick anywhere from a few hours to a few days after taking my medication. If I’m planning on meeting a hot date at a restaurant, I might opt to postpone injecting myself with biologics, at least until after the date. I’d rather not potentially puke all over my date (if my rheumatologist is reading this, I’m sorry but I’m not sorry). However, if you need your medication to function, don’t wait to take it.

Being that my invisible disability is sometimes visible, I get a fair amount of anxiety before a date, especially if I have to use my wheelchair or cane that day. If I need to be in my wheelchair during a date, I’ll take some time to “warn” my date ahead of time that I’ll be in a wheelchair. Likewise, I’ll make sure the restaurant we’re going to is wheelchair-friendly because you wouldn’t believe how many bars and restaurants aren’t actually ADA compliant in my area.

Regardless, coping with my impending date requires more prep work than showering and finding a cute getup. Preparing for a date should never be overlooked by anyone, especially those of us with disabilities.

3. I remind myself that I'm still a catch

Okay, well, I might not be a catch, because I’m still a self-proclaimed petty bitch. But I’m definitely not somehow an inferior suitor because of my disability. Everyone gets a healthy amount of jitters before a date, but nobody should ever have to doubt their worth before going on a date. Regardless of your disability or lack thereof, you are dating material and you deserve to find your person (unless you’re Nick Viall).

Nobody with a disability, invisible or otherwise, should ban themselves from dating because they think their potential partner is going to reject them because of their disability. Your disability might make you different, but that just means you need to handle dating differently, not forego dating entirely.

Less than a week after news broke that her sister Kylie Jenner is probably pregnant, People has learned that Khloe Kardashian is also reportedly pregnant too — and I'm officially incapable of processing all of these major Kardashian baby announcements at once.

A post shared by Khloé (@khloekardashian) on

While Khloe herself hasn't confirmed anything, multiple sources told People that the oldest Kardashian and her boyfriend of a year, NBA player Tristan Thompson, are pregnant with their first child.

"Yes, Khloe and Tristan are expecting and they are absolutely thrilled," a source told People. "This isn’t something they were in a rush to announce to the whole world, and it’s only been in just the past week or so that they’ve felt comfortable telling most of their inner circle."

We don't know much else just yet, but according to TMZ, Khloe and Kylie are even due around the same time in mid-January. Considering Keeping Up With the Kardashians just celebrated its tenth anniversary, we thought the show had seen it all — but three Kardashian sisters with babies on the way, it looks like we're in for a crazy next season.

Growing up in the 2000s, we were fortunate enough to be exposed to an endless list of pretty awesome kids' movies that defined our childhoods. If you grew up during this golden age of classic entertainment, then you'll remember these movies.

1. The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003)

Hilary Duff's questionable Italian accent? The end song? Lizzie kissing Gordo (finally)? THAT is what dreams are really made of.

2. Ice Age (2002)

I'm not embarrassed to say that this movie still makes me emotional when I watch it. Damn you, Sid the Sloth.

3. The Emperor's New Groove (2000)

Will there ever be a more iconic evil duo than Yzma and Kronk?

4. Shrek (2001)

The memes say it all.

5. High School Musical (2006)

I was very disappointed when I realized high school didn't involve basketball teams bursting into song and surprisingly coordinated dance numbers.

6. Spy Kids (2001)

Best part: promotional toy I got from McDonald's when the movie was released. I still have it.

7. Freaky Friday (2003)

I need more Lindsay Lohan movies like this in my life.

8. A Cinderella Story (2004)

I'll take dreamy, misunderstood Chad Michael Murray any day.

9. The Princess Diaries (2001)

A flick that features what is hands down the best movie makeover of all time.

10. Mean Girls (2004)

One of the most quotable movies of our generation.

11. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004)

The real question is, are you a goofy goober?

12. Camp Rock (2008), Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam (2010)

The height of my Jonas Brothers obsession. I may or may not have ugly cried when it first premiered.

13. Kim Possible: A Sitch in Time (2003)

Kim Possible was the most underrated badass on the Disney Channel.

14. Monsters, Inc. (2001)

The older I get, the more I realize I'm turning into Mike Wazowski.

15. Scooby-Doo (2002)

Scooby-Doo stars the ultimate 2000s power couple: Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Enough said.

16. Elf (2003)

Who knew we'd never get sick of seeing Will Ferrell running around in tights every holiday season?

17. Chicken Run (2000)

"All my life flashed before my eyes. It was really boring." Same, TBH.

18. Peter Pan (2003)

My sexual awakening was pretty much kick-started by Jeremy Sumpter.

19. Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2001)

I relate to Carl on a spiritual level.

20. The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl (2005)

AKA the peak of Taylor Lautner's career.

Women in Saudi Arabia Will Officially Be Legally Allowed to Drive

On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia announced that it would legally allow women to drive, ending a law that was recognized globally as oppressive to the women living there.

The New York Times reports that the change is thought to have been put in place by the country's 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who reportedly plans to majorly overhaul many of Saudi Arabia's policies. As the Times notes, the law had harmed Saudi Arabia's reputation abroad, as the belief that women shouldn't drive is only shared by jihad groups like ISIS and the Taliban.

The new law permitting women to drive will take effect in June 2018, giving women who were formerly forced to hire drivers the ability to drive themselves to work and participate in the economy. Despite the fact that Saudi women are still usually required to get permission from their male guardians to do things like work and undergo medical treatments, the Saudi Arabian government has confirmed that they will not need the same permission to obtain driver's licenses.

"There is no wrong time to do the right thing," Khaled bin Salman, the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the U.S, told CNN, adding, "it's not religious nor a cultural issue."

Meanwhile, Saudi women have been posting their ~current moods~ to Twitter following the news:

While Saudi Arabia still has a long way to go when it comes to both genders having fair and equal rights, this is a HUGE step in the right direction.

Kim Kardashian West Will Be Skipping Paris Fashion Week For a Really Good Reason

Kim Kardashian West and Kendall Jenner will reportedly be skipping Paris Fashion Week this year, which is a shame for us since we don’t get to see all their outfit inspo splashed on our social media. But considering that Kim’s traumatic robbery took place at Paris Fashion Week this time last year, it’s understandable why the sisters might be avoiding the event.

Kim has previously opened up about her experience and the disturbing flashbacks she still copes with from the break in. The Kardashian clan gets a lot of heat, but in this case we think it's perfectly reasonable for the beauty mogul to take a day off for once. Now is the time for her to be safely with friends and family, instead of reliving last fall's trauma.
