Is It Normal To Have Crushes While You're In A Serious Relationship?

0
0

Let’s start with the obvious—relationships aren’t easy. Once you find someone you really like, it feels amazing to give your all to them. But what happens when you catch yourself checking out that hottie in line at the supermarket? What about old feelings resurfacing for an ex hook-up? We all have crushes, but what’s okay and what isn’t when it comes to relationships? We’ve talked to collegiettes with experience to give you the low down on whether it’s normal to have crushes while you’re in a serious relationship.

In short: Yes!

It’s totally normal to have crushes while in a relationship. Just because you’re devoted to someone doesn’t mean you aren’t going to find other people attractive or charismatic. As long as you’re fully committed to your SO, there shouldn’t be a problem. Ariana Annuziato, a junior at Drexel University, has been in two serious relationships, which lasted nearly two years each. “While I was in these relationships, I definitely found myself crushing on people who were not my SO at the time,” she says. “Generally, these crushes are harmless and natural. I think it’s only human nature to be flattered by a little extra attention, especially when you usually only receive it from one person over a long period of time. It’s nice to know that you still have game.” While crushing on someone is okay, you definitely don’t want to take it farther than that. Read on for what you should ask yourself when these crushes come up.

Is it someone you already had a crush on?

If you’ve had a long-time crush on someone and know nothing would ever happen, you shouldn’t be worried. But if you’re in a serious relationship and find yourself wanting other people in your life, that may be a red flag. “I think that in some way we will all have a crush on someone else while in a relationship and probably that crush is for someone that we knew about before being in the relationship,” says Yarilix Santos, a senior at Albizu University. “A crush for me is someone that in some way or another wasn’t meant to be with you or nothing happened,” she says. “But if you while in a relationship develop a crush or more, then it’s time to think if you are really into your SO.” She’s totally right! If you’re crushing on someone you know you’d never be with, like a “friend crush” or someone you wouldn’t actually speak to, what’s the harm? Issues start to come up if you’re imagining yourself being with someone else.

Related: Could You Be Emotionally Cheating On Your SO?

Are you pursuing this person?

If you find yourself flirting with your crush and trying to spend time with them, it’s probably a bad sign. Your SO should be the person you want to be with and have there to support you. If you find yourself trying to befriend your crush, you could be entering dangerous territory. “If you are crushing on the cutie in your English class it’s no big deal so long as you only make googly eyes and then never see him/her again once the semester is over,” Ariana says. “But if you strike up a friendship with the person, you can expect there to be trouble in paradise when your SO catches on.” Ashley Ortiz, a sophomore at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, agrees. “In my experience, I've had platonic crushes while in a relationship but I've never done anything since I knew they were nothing serious,” she says. “I think it's okay to eye the menu, but ‘don't order a steak, chicken or salmon if you've already ordered a filet mignon.’ That's what I always tell myself and my friends.” As long as you keep your crushing to your imagination, you shouldn’t run into trouble. If you find yourself pursuing the person, it may be time to rethink the relationship you’re in.

Are you on the same page as your SO?

The most important part of relationships is communication. If you’ve talked to your SO about having crushes and both acknowledge that it’s completely natural, you’ll feel a lot better and things will go smoothly. “My girlfriend and I have been together for seven years and agree it’s perfectly fine to have crushes,” says Amy*, a senior at Emerson College. “We're both completely monogamous, and we have no interest in pursuing relationships outside ours. I think it all depends on what you identify as a crush. If I think someone's attractive, physically and emotionally, I consider that a little crush—and I think they are harmless and even healthy.” Once you’re on the same page as your SO, you won’t worry when you find yourself staring at someone on the streets. If you want to bring this up casually without freaking out your SO, you could say something like, “Who’s your celebrity crush?” When they tell you, tell them yours and say something like, “Isn’t it great we can have silly crushes and still be devoted to each other?” This will allow you to see how they feel about it and get things off your chest.

While relationships should focus on the two people in them, having crushes is inevitable. As long as you’re devoted to your SO and aren’t actively pursuing someone else, there’s no reason to feel ashamed! Just remember to be open and let your partner know if you think it’s more than a crush—that’s when dangerous territory can come up. Happy crushing, collegiettes!

An Undocumented Immigrant Shared the Anxiety & Fear Dreamers Are Experiencing Over The End of DACA

0
0

It's official: Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on Tuesday that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals executive action (DACA) program made effective under the Obama administration will be rescinded and phased out within six months— leaving many undocumented immigrants and advocates reeling over the unknowns for the future of DACA recipients.

Former President Barack Obama signed DACA in 2012, to stop the children of undocumented immigrants form being deported. Children under DACA are regularly called DREAMers, named for the DREAM Act that did not pass in 2010

Twitter users using #DefendDACA to voice their opinions had immediate reactions to the news, but one user did more than just express sadness or anger: activist and undocumented immigrant Juan Escalante made a whole thread shining a helpful light on the situation. And, for him, it was deeply personal.

The thread has three major points, outlining the extreme stress, anxiety and fear that Escalante and other DACA recipients are experiencing.

In his thread, Escalante writes that "the thought that you would be STRIPPED off your DACA status is not just traumatizing, it's dehumanizing and exhausting."He expands on the fear and uncertainty that is palpable among Dreamers: "We keep wondering about our futures," he writes."What will happen to us if Trump tries to deport us?"

The thread was retweeted about 22,000 times. While the information may seem obvious to those who consider themselves "woke," it's hard to get a full picture of the potentially devastating impact of the loss of this program without listening to voices of undocumented people.

While everyone is discussing the politics of the situation and the concerns of government officials, it's even more important to take a human look at the people directly affected by this legislative move — something that doesn't seem to be happening a lot lately.

More immigrant voices are needed in their own issues. Thankfully, activists like Escalante are making sure that they are being heard.

The DOJ Is Actually Going to Retry That Woman Who Laughed at Jeff Sessions

0
0

Yes, the Department of Justice is actually spending their time on this. Attorney General Jeff Session's confirmation hearing this past January was going smoothly as ever — considering the highly anticipated pushback from activists and protesters— until activist Desiree Fairooz let out a giggle.

According to CNN, Fairooz heard Senator Richard Shelby refer to Sessions as someone who treats "all Americans equally under the law," and laughed.

At first Shelby didn't even acknowledge the outburst — which Fairooz called a "reflexive noise" and "rejection of what [she] considered an outright lie or pure ignorance." Later, Fairooz was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor for disrupting the hearing.

While a judge later tossed out that guilty verdict in July,  a new trial has been set for November 13.  It's far-fetched to think that she could serve time or be penalized just for laughing, but it's truly possible.

Overall, the DOJ seems oddly focused on defending Sessions' ego. Hopefully, they'll be moving on to more pressing matter soon.

Fifth Harmony's Lauren Jauregui Sent Trump a Powerful Message About DACA

0

President Trump reportedly plans to dismantle the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals act, and many people across the nation are not on board with the decision. One unhappy critic is Fifth Harmony's Lauren Jauregui, who used her very public platform to express her disgust with the president's actions. On Monday, Lauren took to Twitter to send an open letter to @realDonaldTrump, saying that she is pro-DACA and anti-Trump.

The bold letter reads, "It’s incredible to me that you’ll pardon a man who is known for running his prison as a Latino concentration camp and call him a patriot, but then deport kids with a dream to be successful citizens with safe lives. You disgust me. You and your squad of Republican elite/cowards are truly sick humans. Pardoning criminals and criminalizing the vulnerable. #SaveDACA”

According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, DACA was instated in 2012 by President Obama to protect and support young immigrants. Under this act, minors who were illegally brought to America can apply for deferred action and receive work authorization, so long as they attend school and are not convicted of any felony or significant misdemeanors. If Trump successfully rescinds DACA, it will affect an estimated 790,000 people who came to the United States as children, Teen Vogue reports.

Jauregui has a history of sharing her discontent with POTUS. As she told Teen Vogue earlier this year, she began to speak out during "...the beginning of the [presidential] campaigns, and especially when I started seeing the way that Donald Trump was running his campaign off of hatred, bigotry, slander, and disrespect toward so many different kinds of people."

As Lauren proves, Trump's critics are louder than ever and definitely not backing down anytime soon.

Sharon Osbourne Just Said Some Awful Things About Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian is a lot of things: supportive daughter and sister, devoted wife, loving mother, reality television star, businesswoman and fashion icon. She is also a frequent target of criticism from the general public and her fellow celebrities. Most recently, the mom of two received criticism from another celeb mom: Sharon Osbourne.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Osbourne discussed her disapproval of Kim's nude selfies, clothes and sex life. "Kim says she’s doing everything in the name of feminism, but that’s not feminism!" Osbourne said. "Those girls live off their bodies, half of L.A. has been through them and everything they do from the sex tape to the plastic see-through dresses and the gym wear is about sex, not female progress. And listen: God bless them." Harsh.

A post shared by Kim Kardashian West (@kimkardashian) on

I'm unsure why Kim and her family were even a subject of conversation in this interview, which started with Osbourne discussing her personal battle with depression and her husband's affairs. Despite the off-topic talking point, Osbourne didn't hold back in her negative opinions about Mrs. Kanye West. "If Kim wants to show off her body, fine. But that’s not feminism, that’s being a ho," Osbourne continued. "And there’s nothing wrong with being a ho, but always remember what you are."

Osbourne may be preaching female progress, but last I checked slut-shaming another woman doesn't qualify as feminism either. And according to Refinery29, this isn't the first time Osbourne has come after Kim. She told PEOPLE in 2015 that Kim's selfie collection book, Selfish, was "silly," and she criticized the star for dressing her daughter North in fur.

Regardless of her impressive empire, Kim is still a human being who deserves to be respected for her success. Osbourne should try to relate to Kardashian, mother to mother, rather than bash her for her lifestyle.

This 'Grey's Anatomy' Doctor Just Returned Last Season, But She's Already Leaving Again

Shonda Rhimes never fails to pull our heartstrings and leave us in tears. That being said, Grey's Anatomyfans should be prepared for another heart-wrenching loss. TVLine reports that Dr. Leah Murphy will not appear on the new season of Grey's, which returns Sept. 28 for Season 14. I know—I'm sad, too. Didn't we just get her back?!

According to TVLine, Tessa Ferrer, who plays Leah, has not been seen on set this season, and there are no plans for her to appear, though reps for ABC have not commented on the situation. Just to recap, Dr. Murphy made her debut during Season 9, but she was written out after being fired in the Season 10 finale. Leah ~just~ returned to the show last season, and now we're losing her again. What's going to happen?!

If you're an avid watcher, I'm sure you're wondering how Arizona will survive the loss of another romantic interest. Can Shonda please give us some answers?!

The Grey's premiere can't come quickly enough. I have to know how the show will fare without Leah. Hopefully, it will all make sense soon, because right now I can't stand the thought of having to say goodbye to another character. Shonda, you really know how to make me suffer.

Men Are More Likely to Be Sorted Into Gryffindor & Slytherin Than Women

0

Forget the Myers-Briggs test. The Hogwarts Sorting Hat is the best judgment of personality.

On Sept. 1, in celebration of the start of a new wizarding school year, Time released data from a scientific-based quiz conducted last June that sorted over 1 million people into their Hogwarts houses.

Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff were the most popular houses overall among Americans. But those who were sorted into Gryffindor and Slytherin were mostly men. Probably because, according to the results, men were more likely to “court danger”—like rushing off to the Ministry of Magic to save a certain ex-convict based solely on a scar-induced vision Order of the Phoenix-style (not that I’m still bitter at Harry).

Certain houses also flock to certain geographical regions. You can find your Hufflepuffs in the Midwest, Ravenclaws in the Northeast, Slytherins in the South, and Gryffindors in the Southwest. Maybe Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermione relocated to California after defeating Lord Voldemort?

If anything, this survey proves what many Potter fans have been saying all along: Hufflepuff is relevant.

6 Reasons You Might Miss Your Period When You’re Definitely Not Pregnant

0
0

For collegiettes, a late or missed period can instantly lead to panic. It’s easy to jump to the unsettling conclusion that sets up the conflict in so many rom-coms: an unplanned pregnancy. But what if that’s just not possible? Like, logically you have not had sex recently enough (or ever) to be pregnant. Cue the sigh of relief. But wait—what’s up with your period then? We don’t blame you if you don’t miss your fave monthly visitor, but it’s still good to make sure everything is a-okay with your body. We asked a board-certified gynecologist and women’s health expert to help us out. Dr. Sara Gottfried is the three-time New York Times bestselling author of The Hormone Cure and The Hormone Reset Diet, and her latest, Younger.

1. Stress

Stress causes an increase in some hormone levels, specifically cortisol (a steroid hormone that regulates many bodily processes like your metabolism and immune system) and it’s no secret that periods and hormones are closely tied. Dr. Gottfried explains that when your cortisol levels are high, non-essential bodily functions stop in order to focus on preparing your brain and body to address the stress. “Think of the stress as causing a temporary malfunctioning of the hypothalamus, the part of your brain that controls your hormones,” Dr. Gottfried says. “Excess cortisol can thereby suppress the hormones controlling the menstrual cycle, blocking ovulation making your period stop, a condition known as secondary amenhorrea.”

Since college can be incredibly stressful for so many people, it’s not really surprising that a student might miss her period during particularly tough times, like finals week or midterms. Once your life settles down, your period should come back.

2. Changes in weight

Fluctuation in weight can also impact your menstrual cycle for the same reason that stress does. “Losing or gaining weight is considered a stressor, and when you’re stressed, your body’s hormonal feedback loops are trained to suppress nonessential functions, like reproduction and your period,” Dr. Gottfried says. For someone who’s underweight or dieting, the part of the brain that controls estrogen levels is under a lot of stress and might not release enough to prep the body for reproduction, hence no period.

“Estrogen is what builds up the lining of the uterus, so without sufficient estrogen, your period may be late or stop,” Dr. Gottfried says. Because of this, many women with eating disorders don’t get a period at all. Similarly, being overweight or suddenly gaining weight causes hormone imbalances that don’t bode well for reproduction either. Maintaining a regular, healthy diet will help keep a normal flow too. “Lose weight slowly on a sound nutritional program. Don’t do a fad diet that drops weight too fast.” Dr. Gottfried recommends. “Healthy weight loss is 0.5-2 pounds per week, and less after the first one to two weeks.”

Related: 5 Reasons You Might Be Experiencing Pain During Sex

3. Excessive exercise

It feels nice when you’re finally motivated to work out, but if you are feeling yourself so much that you hit the gym for hours every day, you could be disrupting your flow. Exercise is good for you, but an unhealthy amount of it can change more than your abs. Many gymnasts and runners do not have a period because of the effects of excessive working out, like higher stress levels, increased energy usage and low body fat.

“Intense exercise is another stressor, so it works by the same mechanism of suppressing the hypothalamus and normal hormone production,” Dr. Gottfried says. It might sound nice at first: getting in shape and skipping your period? Score. But be weary of throwing off your flow for too long. Three or more missed periods in a row is officially considered amenorrhea and if you’re at that point you might be putting your body under too much stress.

4. New meds

A lot of medications have hormonal side effects, which, in turn, affect your period. For example, some antidepressants or blood pressure pills could stop menstruation. Double check the side effects for any medication you’re taking and ask your doctor if your reproductive cycle doesn't adjust. Another possibility? Certain birth controls affect periods differently. If you messed up taking the pill or switched forms of birth control recently it could cause your period to take a pass for the month.

5. Human error

Some of us know about the time our period should start, but if we don’t pay close attention it’s hard to say when exactly we’re actually late. Maybe you simply miscalculated. If you’re unsure about the exact length in between your cycles or when your last period was, try downloading an app that monitors your menstruation, like "Period Tracker" or “Clue.” Also, even if it seems like you haven’t had sex in a while, double check that too. “If you go more than 35 days without a period and you’re sexually active, check a pregnancy test,” Dr. Gottfried says.

6. Feeling under the weather

Short-term and chronic illnesses can both delay your period. If your body is really not in its best shape, it won’t want to create a baby in that moment, so it won’t ovulate, forgoing the menstrual cycle for that month. If you begin to continually miss your period, you should go to the doctor to determine if you have a more serious condition. Dr. Gottfried says chronic health issues can also cause abnormal cycles. These include hypothyroidism, Polycystic ovary syndrome, which is a hormone imbalance often accompanied with small cysts on the ovaries, or genetic conditions like Turner syndrome where a female has only one X chromosome.

Sometimes it’s nice to have a month off of insane cramps, worrisome leaks and raging PMS, and a lot of the time it’s probably not due to anything super serious. Changes in your health and body can lead to temporary and totally safe disruptions in your cycle. But in the end, periods are a normal and healthy part of life as a young female. As delightful as it would be to not deal with the mess of menstruation, if you continually miss your period you should take a trip to your doc’s office and figure out what’s up.

Obama Has Officially Responded to Trump's Decision to End DACA

0
0

On Tuesday afternoon, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the Trump administration's decision to end DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals executive action put in place by President Obama that allowed the children of undocumented immigrants to defer their deportation. While we all expected Obama to be less than thrilled, we now have an official statement from the former POTUS on the matter.

As CNN reports, Barack Obama took to Facebook only hours after the decision was made to slam the Trump administration, calling the move "cruel" and "self-defeating."

His post began, "Immigration can be a controversial topic. We all want safe, secure borders and a dynamic economy, and people of goodwill can have legitimate disagreements about how to fix our immigration system so that everybody plays by the rules."

A post shared by Barack Obama (@barackobama) on

However, according to the former president, that doesn't excuse the devastating impact the Trump administration's decision will have on thousands of young people who may feel American in every way except legally.

"Let’s be clear: the action taken today isn’t required legally," Obama later continues. "It’s a political decision, and a moral question. Whatever concerns or complaints Americans may have about immigration in general, we shouldn’t threaten the future of this group of young people who are here through no fault of their own, who pose no threat, who are not taking away anything from the rest of us. They are that pitcher on our kid’s softball team, that first responder who helps out his community after a disaster, that cadet in ROTC who wants nothing more than to wear the uniform of the country that gave him a chance. Kicking them out won’t lower the unemployment rate, or lighten anyone’s taxes, or raise anybody’s wages."

Former Vice President Joe Biden also spoke out against the end of DACA, echoing many of Obama's thoughts:

Meanwhile, the Trump administration will only continue to renew DACA permits throughout the next six months and will not issue new ones. They plan to phase out the program entirely by March 2020 — making it extremely urgent for Congress to act to come up with a replacement, fast.

What to Watch on Netflix When You're Having a Bad Day

Whenever you're having a bad day, it helps to come home, crawl into bed with a bunch of blankets and drink a glass of wine while watching Netflix. We all have a go-to list of shows and movies that are perfect to boost our mood. Here are 15 top picks on Netflix for those days where you need that extra pick-me-up.

1. Gilmore Girls

Watching Gilmore Girls pretty much demands that you eat lots of junk food, laugh along with their witty banter and forever relate to Luke's perpetual grumpiness.

2. Bridget Jones's Diary

Some days you need to take a page out of Bridget's book. Drown your sorrows in ice cream while helplessly relating to all of her struggles with dating.

Kimmy's unshakeable enthusiasm and joy about everything are basically infectious.

John Legend Tried to Break Up With Chrissy Teigen Once - But Don't Worry, Because She Didn't Let Him

Few celebrity couples seem more perfect for each other than John Legend and Chrissy Teigen — but believe it or not, John actually broke up with Chrissy once for less than a day. (Or, at least, he tried.)

John told The Guardian in a recent interview that he tried to break up with his now-wife while he was super stressed out on tour.

"I was really stressed and busy," he said. "I was just like: 'I’d just be happier single right now,’ and she was like: 'No.'"

File under: the most Chrissy Teigen-esque response to being broken up with ever. Don't freak out though, because according to John, the couple was back together in less than half an hour. Phew.

Later, Chrissy took to Twitter to offer her side of the story — and naturally, it's totally hilarious.

"It wasn't a a typical breakup," she tweeted on Monday. "He was on tour and his voice hurt and he was being a whiny face about everything and so yeah, I was like 'no.'"

TBH, we'd expect nothing less from the clap-back master herself. And thank goodness she did, because we have no idea where we'd be if we couldn't live vicariously through their #CoupleGoals relationship or swoon over their adorable daughter Luna.

ASOS has long been our go-to for just about every piece of clothing or accessory imaginable. If you need it, ASOS probably has it — and it looks like soon, the British online store will be feeding our beauty addictions too.

According to Teen Vogue, ASOS announced that it will be dropping its own in-house line of face and body makeup, aptly named ASOS Makeup. The best part? Everything is priced under $20, making it super collegiette budget-friendly. While the line will reportedly expand in January, the brand is starting with a killer lineup of lipsticks, lip liners, eyeliners, mascara, blush, highlighter and bronzer, all of which will drop on the site in just a few weeks on September 20th.

To go along with the drop, the brand has also released a fun and colorful campaign featuring models Jazzelle, Chen Liu and Richie Shazam to showcase the fact that the products are for everyone, regardless of your gender or skin color. (Which we all know, is a philosophy the beauty world needs to see more of.)

With ASOS's beauty line dropping in under three weeks and Rihanna's Fenty Beauty hitting Sephora stores in a few days, my bank account will be bracing itself for basically the entire month of September.

How to Survive Your High School English Class When You're Just Not Into It

0
0

High school: it’s the best of times, and it’s the worst of times. Among the best parts are the clubs, sports and school spirit and among the worst are are homework, stress and the lack of freedom. For many pre-collegiettes, these three fears coincide in one class: high school English. While websites like Sparknotes and CliffNotes make English classes a little easier, sometimes, they can feel like a real drag. Here’s how you can survive and thrive in your high school English class. You may actually end up enjoying it!

1. Read more and learn to love reading

How much do you read? If you don’t read outside of school assignments and the occasional summer reading book, you’re really missing out.

Books allow you to travel and imagine the impossible. Don’t let one bad book experience ruin reading for you entirely. If you don’t like hardcover or paperbacks, try reading e-books through apps like OverDrive that connect you with your local library.

Dagny Bloland, an adjunct instructor at the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University, recommends applying what you’re reading to your own life. “Try to make connections between what you’re reading and your own life,” she says. “For example, it’s hard to read Shakespeare. But, the human emotions are in everybody’s life.”

Make connections between what you’re reading and what’s going in the world around you. For instance, Frankenstein has obvious applications to genetic engineering and designer babies, real life ethical dilemmas of today. It’s not just flowery language and an Oedipal complex.

“Literacy is about you,” says Bloland. “Reading and writing and speaking and listening are all about you finding your voice in the world and listening to the voices of other people through other times and cultures. It’s a conversation. Think about how English will help you to understand yourself in the world better.”

Developing reading skills takes time. Start at a comfortable reading level, where the number of vocabulary words you don’t know per page is less than five. Most importantly, though, keep in mind that any time is a great time to read. Try reading rather than scrolling through your social media feeds. Take a book with you on your train (everyone in Paris does it!) and imagine the story taking place right in front of you. “Run a movie in your head as you read,” says Bloland. "Imagine the characters being up on the screen as you read the story so that as you read, you’re making images.”

You don’t have to limit yourself to just reading classics...unless you love classics, of course. Here’s a Her Campus-approved list to get you started. Find books or magazines that are related to your hobbies and interests. In addition, reading doesn’t have to be a solitary activity—you can do it with your friends (book club, anyone?) or a family competition.

2. Talk to your teacher

Your teacher’s job is to help you learn, but their job isn’t to babysit you. Teachers want to know if you’re struggling or even if you’re just not liking the class. It might seem a little embarrassing at first to admit that you need help, but reaching out is an important step in developing a positive relationship with your teacher and improving your experience in the classroom.

“Sometimes, you don’t like the literature or you don’t enjoy reading it because you don’t understand it very well,” says Bloland. “You’re not comprehending it, especially if it’s challenging or written a couple hundred of years ago. If that’s the case, your English teacher is your best friend. Find a time to sit down with your English teacher and say that you’re having trouble understanding the text. See what suggestions they can give you because English teachers want kids to love literature.”

Emilie Trepanier, a senior at the University of Utah, suggests that you keep in touch with your English teacher. “This doesn't make you a teacher's pet or a kiss-up,” she says. “If you're struggling with an assignment, or experiencing writer's block, let them know! You'd be surprised by how helpful your educators can be.”

From academic and transition assistance to feedback on all of your papers, there’s so much that you can learn from them your English teachers—and all of your teachers, for that matter.

Kayleen Parra-Padron, a senior at Florida International University, recommends reaching out for help in other ways as well. "Get to know the teacher really well,” she suggests. “If that doesn't work, there's always tutoring after school or study groups with friends!”

“If your school has a librarian, ask them for help,” suggests Bloland. “A librarian can find you books on the same theme as what you’re reading. If you find one book to be interesting, think about how the same theme works in the book that seems a little more distant from your experience. Either your school librarian or your local city librarian is a great resource.”

In addition, don’t forget about your counselor. “It may be that your counselor can find you tutoring, if you’re really having trouble, or maybe recommend a book club,” says Bloland.

Another option is seeking help at a support center that provides academic resources. These centers help you find success in your studies, with study skills workshops, one-on-one consultations, student-athlete coaching, disability support, and so much more. They’re not just for students who are struggling or have fallen behind on their assignments. They’re available at any time for anyone, and it’s better to safe than sorry. Going in for help at the beginning of the semester and then not needing help later on is better than rushing in the week before finals only to find that there aren’t any tutors left.

3. Take advantage of online resources

There’s a chance that you’ve consulted with your teacher, classmates, friends and school’s academic resources center to no avail. There’s a ton of handy online resources that are available for free.

If you’re lost on what an author’s talking about (seriously, what’s the deal with this door, Hawthorne?), SparkNotes might be your go-to, especially for their No Fear Shakespeare content.

Samantha Burke, a recent graduate from Siena College, often used SparkNotes. "I skimmed books in high school but just didn't have time to read so many chapters every night, so I used SparkNotes and CliffsNotes to have me covered for daily quizzes,” she says. “One of my English teachers even indicated which questions the answers could be found on SparkNotes to try to narrow down who may not be reading.”

There’s also other great resources, like Shmoop. Shmoop identifies and breaks down key quotes and passages from each chapter and connects them to important motifs and themes, unlike SparkNotes which provides a more superficial summary at times.

If you prefer watching and listening to analyses, check out YouTube for helpful videos that talk you through each piece of literature. Crash Course English Literature is a mini-series lead by author John Green. In the videos, he analyzes classic novels, like The Great Gatsby and the poems of Emily Dickinson, and he keeps things interesting and quick—usually his vids are less than ten minutes.

Emily Schmidt, a sophomore at Stanford University, watched her younger sister go through the English class struggle, but found that using technology kept her encouraged. "She's a math and science person, so reading a book like The Grapes of Wrath was hard for her. She works with her friends in that class, so she can better understand the text and point of assignments. I think sending her funny book memes has also made her like it more."

4. Get involved in class discussions

Showing up isn’t enough to show your teacher that you’re invested in the class or in your grade. If you’re not speaking up when your teacher asks a question or when roundtable discussions are ongoing, there’s no way for teacher to know that you’re doing your assignments and finishing your readings on time. Participating in discussions engages you in the class, helping you to become more interested in what you’re reading and learning about. Another plus is that participating reinforces your knowledge of the material and it encourages you to keep up with the assignments so you’ll have something to say in class.

Emilie strongly encourages that you do your readings. “Life is busy and there is so much to do, but knowing how to make time to finish these high school English readings will ensure your excelling in college,” she says. “Speaking up in class is so hard, but if you're doing the readings, you don't need to sweat it if you get called on!”

If you tend not to speak up in class, start small, and soon enough, you’ll be on the right track. In order to keep yourself accountable, speak within the first five minutes of the discussion. You don’t only have to share an opinion—you can also ask a question or share evidence that supports a certain viewpoint.

English class discussions are great because unlike in math or chemistry, there’s no right or wrong answer—just your own opinion (as long as it has textual evidence to back it up, of course). While you’re reading an assignment, jot down some notes and questions to bring up during discussion time. Whether it’s for participation points or simply to improve your public speaking skills, joining in on class discussions helps the time fly by.

5. Maintain a growth mindset

English is an incredibly dynamic class, which thus comes with its pros (easy real world applications) and cons (often associated with a bad teacher or mismatched teaching style).

There are two different mindsets, or ways that you approach the world: a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. In a fixed mindset, you resign yourself to the fact that you’re not doing well in your English class—your teacher doesn’t like you, the material is too hard, nobody listens to you when you participate. In a growth mindset, you acknowledge what’s happened but you don’t let it get you down.

“After failing the first test of the year, I thought that I was doomed. It didn’t help that my older sister told me that my teacher was a nightmare,” Valerie Park*, a sophomore at Georgetown University, says. “But, I realized that thinking of my teacher as the devil wouldn’t change anything. I had to find what I could change and actually do it. I ended up getting an A minus!”

In short: your mindset determines your ability to succeed and be happy in any situation—even in high school English.

Above all, Bloland recommends: “Don’t give up. Just don’t give up.” At the end of the day, some classes and things in life are just required, and you'll just have to grin and bear it. For instance, most colleges require you to take four years of English or language arts during high school. Whether it's math or a foreign language class, everybody has their favorite class...and their least favorite class. Here’s to hoping that this year’s English class will be the best one yet!

7 Fun Things You Have to Look Forward to in College

0
0

As you pack your bags and say goodbye to all your high school friends, you may start feeling a little apprehensive. You’re getting ready to start a whole new phase of your life, and yeah, you’re excited, but leaving your room, your friends, and the barista who knows your Starbucks order by heart can be a little scary. To help calm your nerves, start thinking about all the amazing new things to do waiting for you at college! Here are seven classic college experiences to look forward to.

1. Theme Parties

One of the first things you should know about collegiette living is that no one throws a party without some kind of theme or even just a title. You’ll hear clever puns (a Cabaret cast party becomes a “Caba-Rave”), fun rhymes (tropical Christmas parties called “Sleighs and Leis”), and, unfortunately, some sexist or racial slurs thought up by drunken frat boys (“CEOs and Corporate Hoes” is one college party you can probably sit out). For the most part, however, these themes are a lot of fun, and you have some pretty good leeway to work with if you forgot to bring a full-body bunny suit for someone’s petting zoo-themed party. If you have any easily portable costume pieces at home, make sure they go in your suitcase. As we all learned from Mean Girls, a good pair of animal ears can turn any outfit into a costume.

While you’re packing for college, be sure to grab cowboy hats, masks, bandanas, tutus, or even just something with sequins. And don’t forget the most crucial party item of all: your ugliest Christmas sweater. Whatever your school, religion, or political leaning, you WILL be invited to at least one Ugly Christmas Sweater Party before the semester’s over, and the nearest thrift shop to campus will very quickly sell out of everything but tasteful turtlenecks.

2. Greek Life

You’ve seen it in countless classic movies and TV shows, and now your time has finally come to rush, should you choose to do so. Joining a sorority can be a lot of fun and, especially as a freshman, it will give you instant access to a tight-knit community of other collegiettes. You’ll have mixers, formals, and plenty of opportunities to help out in your community. Plus, that sisterhood can be a huge asset when you graduate with a nationwide network of professional women in the working world.

Maybe going Greek appeals to you, but you can’t see yourself as a typical “sorority girl,” and you’d rather not spend the next four years explaining that not ALL sorority sisters share Elle Woods’s penchant for hot pink. If that’s the case, consider joining a professional sorority or fraternity. These organizations will offer you the same camaraderie and networking opportunities a typical sorority would without the usual connotations. Plus, since these groups are based on common interests, you’ll definitely have something to talk about at the meetings!

Of course, not everyone wants to be involved with the Greek system at all. Surprisingly enough, though, even the most independent collegiette can reap some benefits from a Panhellenic presence on campus. Frats will throw tons of parties, and they’ll be only too happy to have more collegiettes on the invite list. Grab your friends, slip on some sparkly flats, and take advantage of the free party atmosphere! Sororities and fraternities will be putting on a lot of other events throughout the year, too. Chapter fundraisers can range from simple donut sales to full-blown carnivals, so why not enjoy them? The frats and sororities will be doing all the work so you can enjoy yourself and support a charitable cause at the same time.

What if your school doesn’t have Greek life? Even if there aren’t frats or sororities, there will still be tons of fun clubs and organizations to get involved with. Whatever your passion, there will be a club for it, and, if there’s not, start one yourself! You’re sure to find plenty of like-minded people who can’t wait to get involved.

3. School Spirit

As nostalgic as you may be for your high school alma mater, nothing compares to the pride you’ll start feeling for your new college or university. Not only will you finally be at a school you chose for yourself, you’ll also have had at least three months to research school colors, traditions, mascots, legends, and more. By the time August rolls around, you’ll be brimming with fun facts about every aspect of your school, and you’ll be totally psyched to start life as a real live collegiette.

Collegiette spirit is more than just being excited, though. Getting into college and deciding where you go is ultimately something you did for yourself, and you should be proud of that. And, once you get to campus, chances are you’ll find a ton of other people who love your school just as much as you do, especially when football season starts in the fall. Even better, you don’t have to know or care exactly what a halfback does to have a good time. Paint your face, wear school colors, get a foam finger, and head to the tailgate party. Feel free to flaunt that school spirit, and don’t ever worry about looking dumb or overly enthusiastic, because the rest of the student body is right there with you!

4. Dorm Living

Why does sharing a shoebox-sized room with a total stranger rank a spot on this list? It’s pretty simple. What you lose in terms of privacy, you’ll quickly make up for with camaraderie. As it turns out, a shared hatred of communal showers is actually a great icebreaker between roomies, floormates, or even just someone living across the hall (especially if he’s cute). The quarters will be cramped and noisy, and you may not have air conditioning, but those narrow hallways will be where you and your new friends start learning how to live as independent adults. You’ll be doing all your own laundry (including the whole “ironing” thing your mom is always freaking out about), waking yourself up for class, and setting your own curfews (finally!). Don’t worry, though; you’ll probably still have a meal plan, so you can save your culinary adventures for sophomore year.

Mastering all these new skills is definitely a struggle, especially when you barely have room for all your shoes. But with the right attitude, living in a dorm will be one of the best times of your college career. Besides enjoying your newfound independence, all of your friends, study groups, and parties will always be right next door. Plus, even the most inconveniently located dorm is probably closer to your 9 a.m. class than any off-campus apartment would be. You’ll have plenty of freedom, but your RA (Residential Adviser) will still be around to help you out if you need any guidance.

Your RAs and fellow dorm-dwellers will want these first few months in a new environment to be a positive experience for you, and move-in day icebreakers are just the beginning. Social activities with your floormates are easy to organize and super convenient. Post a sign-up sheet in the floor common room or post a message on your floor's Facebook group to see who else wants to check out campus landmarks, grab icecream, or even just drive to the nearest Target for some much-needed groceries. If no one has a car, talk to your RA about using floor funding to rent a van!

In addition to heading off campus with your floor mates, there’s plenty to do without even going downstairs. From study dates to dorm parties to floor-wide formals (cleverly called “Floor-mals,” of course), your floor will be a great place to hang out and meet tons of new people, especially in the winter, when it’s way too cold to go anywhere else!

5. Free Swag!

A lot of schools will send out a free T-shirt or bumper sticker the minute you commit to attending their institution, but the giveaways don’t stop there. College kids love free stuff, so businesses in the area will be loading you down with swag bags, school supplies, clothes, and whatever else it takes to grab your attention. Plus, your school wants you to be glad you chose them, so for the first few months of the semester, you’ll be showered with gifts branded with the university’s name and logo. By the end of the semester, you’ll realize half of your wardrobe has somehow become either school-spirited or part of an advertisement, and you’ll probably end up ditching most of it. But really, why turn down free stuff?

Two more things you’ll quickly learn in college are how quickly dining halls get monotonous and how little extra cash you have to go out to eat. The solution? Free food on campus! All those clubs you’re joining will probably be serving refreshments at each meeting or even just giving it away at special events (psst... the Spanish club serves free burritos every week. ¡Vámonos!). Basing your extracurriculars on the quality (and amount) of food they serve can even lead you to explore something you never thought you’d enjoy. If your stomach and wallet are feeling particularly empty, look for public lectures held by various academic departments—chances are pretty good they’ll be catered.

6. Study Abroad

Not only are you moving to a new room, city, or even state for college, you’ll also have the opportunity to leave the good old U.S. of A. behind completely... at least for a few weeks. Most colleges are full of opportunities to study abroad, but if there’s a specific place you’re dying to go to, make sure you check your school’s website to see if they offer a program there. If they don’t, talk to the study abroad adviser about making your own program or working with the abroad offices at another school!

Colleges will offer tons of study abroad programs, ranging from week-long language-intensive programs to yearl-long immersion programs. To find the program that’s best for you, think about what you want to study. As much as you love sushi, a semester in Tokyo may not be the best choice if you’re a Spanish major. On the other hand, if you’re interested in art but don’t plan on majoring in it, see if your school offers an English-language summer drawing program in Italy! You should probably also consider how much time you really want to spend off campus and whether or not your abroad credits will transfer back home. Once you know what’s right for you, having an amazing abroad experience will be a snap!

7. Campus Traditions

Just like your high school swim team that painted their faces in school colors before competing at Regionals, college will be home to tons of ancient, time-honored, and completely insane traditions. But somehow, just like you got used to those over-enthusiastic high school athletes tracking paint all through the hallways, so will these college traditions become strangely endearing. After all, they’re your school’s weird quirks, and therefore, you’re allowed to take pride in them.

From naked runs through the quad to flash raves in the library to kick off Finals week, every school has their own little oddities. Even if you never participate, you’re sure to take pride in relating the tales of your friends’ apparent insanity to all the folks back home. Plus, some traditions, like free milk and cookies during exam week or a glow-stick-lit march through campus for Freshman Convocation, can actually be pretty sweet, help you feel at home, and remind you exactly why you were so ready to leave behind the comforting familiarities of wherever you grew up.

Leaving home for college can be scary, but saying goodbye to Mom and Dad will be a whole lot easier knowing all the awesome stuff you have to look forward to! This list is just the beginning, and everyone’s paths will be different.

College is where you get to figure out what you love, so consider these tips a starting point to all the other amazing experiences you’re going to discover all on your own!

Seattle Seahawks' Michael Bennett Shares Harrowing Experience of Police Brutality on Twitter

Early on Wednesday morning Seattle Seahawks player Michael Bennett posted a note on his Twitter alleging that police officers in Las Vegas detained him, used excessive force and held a gun to his head following the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight on August 26.

In the letter, shared with the word "equality," he wrote that he was detained "for doing nothing more than simply being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time" after sounds that may have been gunshots went off in the area. Bennett wrote that he, like others in the area, ran away from the sounds but that the officers ordered him to lay down on the ground, held a knee to his back (making it difficult for him to breathe) and handcuffed him tight enough for his fingers to go numb.

He also alleged that, while he continually asked the officers why he was being detained and reminded them of his rights, one of the officers held a gun to his head and threatened "to blow [his] f------ head off" if he moved.

(Editor's Note: Bennett's letter does contain profanity.)

Bennett wrote that the "excessive use of force was unbearable" and described the fear and desperation of his situation.

"I felt helpless as I lay there on the ground handcuffed facing the real-life threat of being killed," Bennett wrote. "All I could think of was ‘I’m going to die for no other reason than I am black and my skin color is somehow a threat.’ My life flashed before my eyes as I thought of my girls. Would I ever play with them again? Or watch them have kids? Or be able to kiss my wife again and tell her I love her?"

Bennett said that, ultimately, the officers realized that he was a famous professional football player after he was left sitting in their police car for what he said "felt like an eternity." He said he was ultimately released, but not given any legitimate justification for the officer's behavior.

Bennett, in the past, has joined other players (like Colin Kaepernick, who shared Bennett's tweet in solidarity), in sitting or kneeling during the national anthem before games in protest of police brutality. He wrote that the situation represents "unequivocally, without question" why he performs that act of protest — and why he will continue to do so.

"I have always held a strong conviction that protesting or standing up for justice is just simply the right thing to do," Bennett wrote. "...The system failed me. I can only imagine what Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, and Charlene Lyles felt."

Bennett adds that he has retained a Civil Rights Attorney to explore his legal options that include filing a civil rights lawsuit over the incident.
