The 9 Stages of Seeing Your Roommate After Summer

$
0
0

The end of summer is bittersweet - on one hand, you're going back to a semester filled with homework and boring lectures, but on the other hand, you get to go back to parties, independence and, more importantly, your roommate. Your roommate has been with you through the good times and the bad. She's watched you lie on the couch panting after double-fisting cheesy bread and Cinna Stix, and yet, she still chooses to live with you. Here's what to expect when you reunite with your roomie this fall!

Stage 1: Excitement

You finally have your partner in crime back. Who else will hand you a glass of water and force-feed you animal crackers after a night of too much Fireball?

Stage 2: Giving compliments

They'll be exchanged for at least two full minutes:

"Ugh, you're so tan; I'm jealous!"

"No way, I'm a ghost. You definitely look fit, though!"

Stage 3: Catching up

This is the part where you both feel obligated to ask how each other's summers were even though you texted each other daily about how insanely bored you were.

“Where’d you go? Who’d you hook up with?”

#Nowhere #Nobody

Stage 4: Making plans

This is the year that you're going to go to clubs, music festivals and weekend getaways EVERY weekend.

(You both know that won't actually happen. See actual weekend plans below).

Stage 5:Deciding weekly rituals

Every Sunday will be dedicated to sitting on the couch together with pad thai and the new episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, just as the Lord (Scott Disick) intended.

Stage 6:Rummaging through each other's closets

Why wait around for sales at the mall when you can borrow your roommate's romper any time you want?

Stage 7: Figuring out how to live with her again

Excuse me? Ma'am? I'm trying to watch Game of Thrones on my laptop, so, do you mind? One does not simply watch Scandal with no headphones in.

Stage 8:Remembering her annoying little habits

It's always hard to deal with someone who doesn't believe in cleanliness. "Is your milk-encrusted cereal bowl just going to bring itself over to the sink, or... ?"

Stage 9:Putting everything aside and hanging out together just like old times

The moment you've both been waiting for since May.

The Ultimate College Bucket List

College is supposed to be the best four years of your life, but it won’t be if you spend all of your time in your dorm room doing homework! While it is important to study and go to class, the beauty of college is that you have room in your schedule to experience the world around you. Soon enough you’ll have a 9-to-5 job, so take advantage of your status as a student and get out there!

If you need some inspiration for how to live your undergraduate years to their fullest, check out Her Campus’s Ultimate College Bucket List. Grab your besties and try to check off every item by the end of your senior year!

1. Take a class just for fun

While it’s easy to get caught up in all the classes that you need to take in order to graduate, chances are you have room for a few extra courses outside of your major(s) or minor(s). Enroll in a crazy, fun class that actually interests you, like Kanye Versus Everybody or Knights of Old and Harry Potter—you’ll learn something new while having fun!

2. Go to a local sports game

Even if you don’t go to school in a major city like New York or Boston, you can still attend a game for one of the community's local sports teams. Dress in their colors or gear, and make a day of it!

3. Volunteer

Whether you choose to do an Alternative Spring Break or simply spend an afternoon at a senior care center, volunteering is a great way to give back to your community. You’ll be doing good and feeling great about it!

4. Start a club

Is there a cause you’re really passionate about that you feel is lacking on your campus? Do something about it! Starting a club looks great on a resume, plus you’ll meet likeminded people who you might not otherwise get to know.

5. Start a Her Campus chapter on your campus

If your school doesn’t have a Her Campus chapter, you’re seriously missing out. Imagine writing an article similar to this one, but for your very own chapter! If you’re interested in starting a Her Campus chapter at your school, you should definitely apply.

6. Introduce yourself to someone you’d like to get to know

We all know someone on campus who we think is effortlessly cool. You see him or her in class, but you’ve never actually introduced yourself. What are you waiting for? It may seem daunting, but you two can never become besties unless you put forth that initial effort. And even if you don't become great friends, at least you put yourself out there!

7. Sing karaoke

Find the nearest restaurant or bar that hosts a karaoke night, get a group of friends together and go sing your heart out. Who cares if you don’t think you have a great voice? Everyone else will be singing along with you anyway!

8. Study abroad

If it’s possible, you should definitely study abroad. You don’t have to go for an entire semester, either! There are often two, three and six-week programs offered as well as semester-long courses. You will have the time of your life—trust us!

9. Get to know a professor

Go to office hours, stay after class or ask a professor to meet you for coffee. Building a professional relationship with your professors is extremely valuable. You will learn from someone in the field you are hoping to go into, practice networking and have a great reference for the future!

10. Apply for an internship

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a freshman or a senior, you can apply for an internship at any point. Reach high, and if you don’t get it, so what? You’re putting yourself out there, plus you’re getting great practice writing cover letters and perfecting your resume!

11. Go to a concert

From local bands to big name artists, musicians are always performing on or near college campuses. Splurge to see your favorite singer, or check out your friend’s band—either way, you’re sure to have a blast.

12. Take advantage of free events for college students

You can flash your student ID for freebies at tons of places—like stores, restaurants, museums, and more. You won’t be in college forever (unfortunately!), so get those student discounts now.

13. Do a group costume for Halloween

In college, Halloween isn’t just one day—it’s a whole weekend! Celebrate Halloweekend in style by coordinating costumes with a big group of friends. And don’t forget to take tons of pictures!

14. Participate in a 5k

There are so many cool 5K options out there—from the Color Run to the 5K Foam Fest. You won’t even realize that you’re exercising, because you’ll be having so much fun!

15. Go to a student theater production

Whether you have friends in the theater program or you just enjoy a good play, seeing a student-run production is a must. Who knows, some of these people could go on to become big stars!

16. Get a picture with your school mascot

Even if you think your mascot is totally lame, snap a photo with them at a sports game or other school-wide event. You’ll look back on it and laugh, plus it will be a great addition to your college scrapbook.

17. Rush a sorority

If you’re at all interested, you should definitely consider rushing a sorority. You might find your perfect fit, and you might not—but at least you can say you gave it a chance!

18. Apply for a leadership position in an extracurricular you’re involved in

Don’t just hang back during club meetings; make your voice heard! Apply to be treasurer, secretary, VP or even president of your favorite extracurricular. It will take you places!

19. Write for a campus publication

Even if you don’t normally write for your school’s newspaper or online magazine, you can contribute an Op-Ed on a topic you’re passionate about. If you really love creative writing, submit a poem or short story to your school’s literary magazine.

20. Go to a themed party

College presents you with many unique opportunities—both in and outside of the classroom! Next time you hear about a theme party, actually go. Even if it’s a total bust, getting dolled up with your friends will be worth it.

21. Audition for an a cappella group, improv group, musical, or play

Even if you haven’t acted since your elementary school play, if performing is something you’re interested in, college is the time to pursue it. Just audition—it will be a valuable experience even if you don’t get the part.

22. Treat yourself to dinner at an expensive restaurant

Living on a college budget isn’t great. Sometimes dinner consists of Kraft Mac & Cheese…three nights in a row. Save up some money and treat yo’ self to a delicious meal that you didn’t have to cook.

23. Participate in a campus-wide tradition

Every college has its traditions, some more outrageous than others. Before you graduate, it is a necessity that you participate in at least one. As a bonus, start your own school-wide tradition and leave behind a legacy!

24. Go to the closest beach

When the weather is warm, take your car or public transportation and explore the nearest beach. It might not be a tropical island, but it will feel great to get some time away from campus. No beach nearby? Try going for a hike or exploring whatever natural beauty your school's area has to offer you.

25. Do a cycling, yoga or group exercise class at your school’s fitness center

Hopefully you already frequent the on-campus gym, but if you don’t, now is as good a time as any to start! If you’re not sure where to begin on your own, participate in one of the free fitness classes. It’s another student perk that won’t last forever.

26. Spend a day (or a week!) without technology

As collegiettes, we are constantly on our smart phones, laptops and tablets. Challenge yourself to spend at least one day free of all technological devices. If you do this over break, you can’t use class or homework as an excuse to check your computer!

27. Go to a museum nearby

Most museums give students discounts or free admission. Spend a quiet day alone wandering through a gallery, or ask that cutie in your English class out on a casual museum date. Now’s your chance to get cultured.

28. Make a fancy meal for you and your friends

While dorm or apartment kitchens can be hard to work with, take the time to plan a big meal for you and your friends. It can be on a special occasion, like a birthday or Friendsgiving, or just because. Make a day of it—cooking, decorating and of course eating the delicious food you all prepared.

29. Visit a friend at his or her university

In college, it’s easy to get caught up in your own personal bubble. Visit a friend at a different school for a weekend. It will be interesting to see the similarities and differences on a new campus!

30. Take pictures!

Document your college experience on your smartphone, with a Polaroid camera, or however else you choose. It’s important to enjoy moments while they’re happening, but you will want photos to look back on as well.

Don’t limit yourself to these experiences, but use this list if you’re looking to get out of your comfort zone and try new things. Every collegiette should have a bucket list for her four years, so get started on yours right now!

Kate Winslet Says She & Leonardo DiCaprio Quote 'Titanic' to Each Other

2017 marks a big anniversary year for the romantic epic Titanic. Turning 20 years old this year, the film is being tested for its accuracy in a National Geographic special, and if that news proves anything, it’s that the obsession with Titanic will never die. Now my shipper heart can beat even more happily because Kate Winslet has admitted that she still quotes the film with costar Leonardo DiCaprio, Glamour UK says. Jack, she’s clearly never letting go!

“You don’t even want to know the last conversation we had, because it was so funny and made me laugh so much,” Winslet said of her friendship with DiCaprio in an interview with the magazine. “We found ourselves saying to each other, ‘Can you imagine if the world really knew the stupid things we say?’ I’m not going to tell you what we actually talk about...sometimes we do quote the odd Titanic line back and forth to each other, because only we can, and we find it really funny.”

It’s no secret that this onscreen pair are one of the greatest celebrity friendships out there. They reunited in 2008 to play opposite each other in Revolutionary Road, and DiCaprio reportedly walked Winslet down the aisle when she was married in 2013. Also, I’m definitely not the only one who cried when these two praised each other during each of their victorious award seasons over the years.

It’s so sweet to know that these two happily acknowledge their past together. Excuse me while I watch Titanic again and cry.

Hurricane Harvey Has Gone 'Beyond Anything Experienced' in Texas

At least five people have died in the midst of Hurricane Harvey, which has surged across the Gulf Coast of Texas this weekend, The New York Times reports. According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm’s rains are expected to continue, leading to floods that are expected to last for days. Harvey’s impact is on its way to being historic, as BuzzFeed News reports that the FEMA chief believes relief operations will last for years.

Beginning as a Category 4 storm on Friday, Harvey weakened to the level of a tropical storm by Saturday afternoon. Despite the storm winding down, its impact is undeniable, with Texas officials having trouble answering distress calls of residents.

"This event is unprecedented and all impacts are unknown and beyond anything experienced," the National Weather Service tweeted on Sunday, sharing a map of the area's precipitation forecast.

National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen said in an interview, "Everything that we had hoped wouldn't happen but was forecasted is happening. We have a catastrophic, life-threatening flood event taking place over southeastern Texas, including the Houston metropolitan area."

In addition to the five deaths reported in the Houston area, more than a dozen injuries have occurred and emergency responders completed over 1000 rescues throughout the night. Severe flash flooding quickly handicapped the ability to travel out of the area, leading to residents' desperate tweets directed at government officials. Those trapped at home were advised to climb to their roof for safety.

President Donald Trump has promised that he will visit Texas as soon as the situation stabilizes.

Trump stirred up controversy (big surprise) for later tweeting about deals with Mexico and Canada less than an hour after addressing Harvey.

The storm's impact on the state's oil and gas industry is still unknown, but leaks and spills are to be expected.

Our thoughts are with those in Texas affected by Harvey. Stay safe!

'Humans of New York' Will Have Its Own Facebook TV Show

Whether or not you know his name, Brandon Stanton has introduced you to hundreds of people around the world. Working as the creator and photographer of “Humans of New York,” Stanton has curated a Facebook page of New Yorkers sharing revelations or stories about their lives. Now with over 17 million likes, the page has also been immortalized in the form of a book written by Stanton. Just when I thought he had all his bases covered, Stanton has now announced that he will produce a HONY TV show for Facebook Watch, the site’s new television platform, HelloGiggles says.

“I’m often deeply moved by the people I meet,” Stanton said. “Or they made me laugh. Or they made me think. And I always do my best to recreate the experience through photos and words. But I always knew that video would provide the closest thing to ‘actually being there.’”

Stanton revealed that his cinematographer Michael Crommet has been filming the HONY interviews over the past four years. He purposely avoided sharing them beforehand because he knew he wanted to use them in a full video project.

“I’ve filmed 1200 interviews on the streets of New York,” Stanton said in his official Facebook announcement. “My goal was not to make a television show based on Humans of New York. I wanted the television to *be* Humans of New York. I think I came pretty close. And I think/hope you will love it.”

The series will premiere this week on Facebook Watch. You can check out the show’s trailer below.

5 Pairs of Shoes That'll Get You Across Campus in Comfort

$

As a collegiette, you understand the struggle of walking down endless sets of stairs, busy sidewalks and packed hallways on a daily basis. This becomes even more difficult if you live on a big campus and have long walks from your dorm to class. While you want to stroll through campus looking stylish, the wedges that you splurged on this summer just aren’t going to work this semester. But you’re not alone in this struggle: we talked to collegiettes just like you, and made a list of their recommendations for the cutest (and comfiest) shoes for walking on campus.

1. Converse

An overwhelming number of collegiettes agree that there’s nothing better than a classic pair of Converse. “They look cute with pretty much any outfit I would wear to class on a typical day, and are so comfortable to walk around campus in,” says Emma Koch, a junior at the State University of New York at New Paltz. White, gray and black styles are versatile and will go with almost anything.

2. Birkenstocks

There's nothing as comfortable as a pair of these classic sandals. “Birkenstocks are easy and quick to slip on, plus they’re super comfortable for walking around campus,” says Allison Crist, a sophomore at the University of Kansas. “I have a pair in black so they match everything.” While Birks haven't always been considered super stylish, fashion girls everywhere are embracing the look.

3. Oxfords & loafers

It's no secret that the menswear-inspired trend is everywhere. If you're looking to work this vibe into an everyday outfit, look no further than a pair of oxfords or loafers, like these ones from Forever 21. Not only are these shoes stylish, but they're comfortable enough to walk around campus in. Complete the menswear look with a button-up white blouse and a pair of dark jeans or black pants.

4. Mid-calf boots

As fall sets in and you make the transition to jeans, leggings and chunky knit sweaters, you'll definitely want to have a pair of mid-calf boots from Macy's on hand. Not only are they great for long walks on campus, but they'll last you well into the winter months as well (extra important if you live on a cold and snowy campus!).

5. Combat boots

There’s no better way to make a statement this fall than with a pair of combat boots from Century 21. “When I’m walking around campus in the fall, my go-to pair of shoes are my Steve Madden combat boots,” says Malone Ryan, a junior at John Carroll University. “They go with any outfit, whether it’s a dress with tights and a cardigan or skinny jeans and an oversized sweater. Plus, you can wear them laced up or buckled down for two completely different looks.” Both black and brown styles of boots add a touch of edginess to any look.

What are you waiting for, collegiettes? There’s no better time than a new school year to invest in a go-to pair of shoes that will carry you across campus—and through the semester.

16 Weird Things We All Did in Middle School

$

There's probably a reason why people don't want to go back to their middle school days. Though we might have some positive memories from middle school, many things about middle school were just awkward. Here are 16 weird things you did in middle school, though you'd probably rather forget them.

1. Wore brand names all over your clothes

You just had to make sure people knew where you bought all of your clothes.

2. Embraced the scene kid trend

You wanted to be different and unique, so you followed another popular trend.

3. Piled rubber bands and bracelets on your wrists

Why wear one bracelet when you could wear 20 rubber bands on your arm instead?

4. Posted every feeling you had on social media

Nowadays, everyone on Instagram needs to know what food you ate. In middle school, everyone on Facebook and Myspace had to know when you were bored or sad or stressed or happy.

5. Viewed other girls as competition

Thank goodness you got over that! Girls have to stick together.

6. Strived to be popular

You wanted to be one of the "cool" girls—whatever that meant.

7. Had your friend ask your crush how they felt about you

Because you couldn't possibly face them yourself!

8. Posted webcam selfies and edited them on Picnik

You had to place emotional song lyrics over your blurry webcam selfie because no one understood you.

9. Listened to angsty pop punk music on repeat

Ugh, your crush didn't like you back, you didn't fit in and your purple hair dye was fading. You needed some angsty songs to relate to.

10. Had ~edgy~ side bangs

11. Used too many texting acronyms

Omg, gtg, brb, ily, ttyl—the list goes on.

12. Sat at the same lunch table every day

And judged other people based on where they sat.

13. Thought you understood how to apply makeup

You thought your thick eyeliner and blue eyeshadow were so stylish and grown up.

14. Crafted the perfect Myspace page

You had to have the perfect background and song, along with an animated cursor.

15. Acted overly competitive in gym class (or made many hopeless attempts to get out of gym class)

Does anyone miss middle school gym class? No? Didn't think so.

16. Thought high schoolers and college students were so mature and cool

HA.

The Only Dorm Grocery List You’ll Ever Need

$

Even if you have an unlimited meal plan (and if you do, we're totally jealous!), it’s still smart to keep some staple food items in your dorm. You never know when you’ll be running late for class and need a quick breakfast or when you’ll be up late finishing a paper and craving something sweet. Keeping your mini-fridge stocked means that you'll never have to worry about rushing to the dining hall to grab a meal if you don't have the time between activities.

To ensure that your dorm is always stocked with a wide variety of versatile food for any time of day, here’s the ultimate dorm grocery list, complete with a few tried-and-true college favorites as well as a few things you may not have thought of! Be sure to print out the full itemized list at the bottom before your next trip to the grocery store.

Breakfast

We hate to break it to you, but at some point you will inevitably wake up late for your 8 a.m. class and won’t have time to grab something from the dining hall. And there may be a Saturday morning after a night out when you can’t bring yourself to get out of bed before your dining hall's breakfast hours end. Whatever the reason, it’s always a good idea to keep some easy breakfast items on hand.

Instant oatmeal is a great to have because it’s healthy and ready in less than a minute! Another option is cereal; just add some milk. Other grab-and-go breakfast items include fruit (apples, bananas and oranges don’t need to be refrigerated), yogurt (we love Greek yogurt because it’s full of protein) and granola/protein bars. We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so don’t skip it!

Lunch

With a college class schedule, you’re likely to have random breaks throughout the day, which means you're bound to end up in your dorm around lunchtime once in a while. The good thing about most lunch items is that they can also double as dinners, which is great news for a college budget.

Keep it classic with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or if you want to get fancy, buy some sliced turkey and whip up a deli-style lunch. Shredded cheddar cheese between two tortillas makes an easy microwavable quesadilla, perfect with a side of chips and salsa!

Dinner

For the nights you get back late from class or just need a break from the dining hall, you'll be happy you have quick dinners around in your dorm so you can get straight to work on finishing the last season of your new favorite Netflix show—er, we meant finishing that term paper.

Easy Mac is a college staple, and don’t forget about about that tried-and-true college staple, Ramen noodles! Bagel Bites and frozen pizza are both quick to make, and soup is great on a cold winter night. Want something a little more sophisticated (and better for you)? Buy pre-cooked chicken, microwave some frozen vegetables and pair with instant brown rice. It’s healthy and convenient; you can’t beat that!

Snacks

Ask any collegiette: snacks are extremely important. Whether you’re hanging out for movie night in your dorm with friends or you just need something salty after you come back at midnight, quality snacks are a must.

Some of the obvious choices are pretzels, chips and Goldfish crackers. You can either buy them in big bags (if you buy them in bulk, they’re cheaper!) or as individual servings (so you can throw one in your bag on your way out the door). Microwave popcorn is always a favorite, or you can change it up with some trail mix. For a healthier snack, grab a cheese stick along with some carrots and hummus! And of course, you can’t forget some good old Ben & Jerry’s to treat yourself after a long day.

Extras

Now that you have all the basics, step up your dorm room grocery game with some extras you may not have thought of! If you’re a coffee drinker, invest in a Keurig Brewing System. It’s ideal when you only want to make one cup of coffee for yourself in the morning. Not a fan of coffee? Get some tea bags and instant hot chocolate instead! If you like honey or sugar in your hot beverages, make sure to stock up on that too.

Consider buying a Brita Water Pitcher, which gives you constant access filtered water to put in a reusable water bottle. It's cheaper than buying plastic water bottles every week! Beyond that, remember to get plastic baggies or Tupperware containers (for snacks and meals on-the-go), as well as plastic utensils, paper plates, cups and napkins.

There you have it! The only dorm grocery list you’ll ever need. Print out the full list below to make sure you remember everything the next time you stock up!

4 Ways to Stay in Touch With Your Orientation Friends

$
0
0

Orientation is overwhelming and exciting at the same time.  You’re meeting so many people and learning so much that you may find your head spinning by the end of it.  Making friends at orientation is a great way to feel comfortable and make the most of what you’re doing, but how do you keep in touch with them afterwards?

Luckily, we have some tips to avoid losing contact with your awesome new friends!

1. Friend each other on Facebook

It sounds clichéd, but adding your orientation friends on Facebook allows you to keep in contact with them better than just texting. You can see if you have classes together through messaging, make plans to meet up or simply know what’s going on in each other’s lives.

Adrian Thompson, a senior at the University of Iowa, became Facebook friends with a girl she got along with at orientation and managed to stay in touch with.  “When school started I messaged her and asked her what classes she was taking,” she says. “Turned out that she had three of the same gen ed classes as me!” They sat together on the first day of class and became great friends.

2. Make lunch plans

During your first few weeks of classes, you may not have a clue whom to get lunch with.  If you schedule a lunch date with someone you met at orientation, you’ll feel a lot better.  The two (or more) of you will be able to meet up and talk about your dorms, classes and weekend plans.

Having lunch will open many doors for hanging out in the future. “Getting lunch with people you meet at orientation is a great way to stay in touch,” says Allison Zeppuhar, a sophomore at James Madison University. “I still occasionally grab lunch or dinner with some of the kids I met.”

Bonus: If each of you brings another friend, you can ease your way into conversation and it won’t be as awkward or intimidating.

3. Go out together

Going out together is a fun way to bond and learn more about each other.  Find out what your friend is into and plan your activity accordingly. You can get dinner off campus, go to a movie or go to a party together.

“I went to a party with a girl I met during orientation, and we had such a good time,” says Brooke Pearson, a sophomore at James Madison University. “We were able to really let loose and get to know each other more.  She is currently my best friend and roommate!”

Round up a group of people you got along well with during orientation through a group text, and see what the night brings!  You never know who could end up being a great friend.

4. Become workout buddies

If someone you meet at orientation isn’t in your dorm or your classes, a good way to stay in touch is by going to the gym together.  The gym is a central place where anyone can meet, and you’ll be able to catch up every time you go together. Having a workout buddy also gives you motivation to stay healthy, so you’ll be more likely to go on a regular basis (no thank you, freshman 15!).  If your fitness buddy is into the same type of workouts as you, it will be even easier to plan times to go together and bond; try meeting up for a group fitness class you both enjoy. Working out together will help you build a friendship you can take places other than the gym!

Staying in touch with your orientation friends will make transitioning to college a lot easier. If you put in the effort, you won’t lose contact with the people you met.  Good luck, collegiettes!

10 Secrets That Will Land You A Spot At Your Dream College

College application season is just around the corner! While looking forward to the next stage of your life is so exciting, it can also feel like a struggle trying to balance it all. Between visiting campuses, narrowing down which schools you’re applying to, crafting a winning personal statement and figuring out financial aid, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed all before you’ve even sent in your first app.

That’s why we recently teamed up with McDonald’s to bring you College Confessionals, an educational workshop packed with tips and tricks for getting into your dream school and making the admissions process a little less nerve-wracking. Thanks to incredible advice from speakers like Her Campus Co-Founder, Stephanie Kaplan Lewis, Senior Assistant Director of Admissions at Boston University, Geena Tortorella, and a smart panel of successful collegiettes, we feel extra ready to triumph at all things college readiness. Want to get in on these sweet tips? Read below for 10 surefire ways to get into the school of your dreams!

1. Become an expert at the application process.

Did you know that most students on average submit 20 college applications? That’s a lot to keep track of! To earn a spot at your top choice school, you’ll need to be a master of organization when it comes to application timelines.

While some colleges share application portals like the Common App, many will have their own unique application portal, and each application will often have a different set of requirements. For instance, one school might simply require a personal statement and transcript, while another might require a personal statement, portfolio and a letter of recommendation.

Our best tip for success is to stay organized and efficient! Keep a running checklist of to-do list items and their date, and create a master calendar to keep track of deadlines. If you submit all your paperwork in a timely manner then you’ve conquered the most crucial step of applying for college.

2. Take above standard level courses during high school.

Colleges want to see where you challenged yourself within what you were offered in high school, so don’t simply coast through the basic curriculum. If you have the chance to take AP classes, unique advanced courses or even a class at your local community college, that’s going to look super impressive to college admissions. Also, sometimes getting a B in an AP class looks better than getting an A in a basic course, because it shows you have initiative and want to grow yourself.

Colleges want to admit students who will go above and beyond academically, and you can prove you’re a perfect candidate by finding ways to test yourself throughout high school.

3. Think critically about what activities you choose to share on your application.

It’s a good idea to be strategic and plan your resume to be relevant for each college and major you’re applying for. Look holistically at everything you did during high school, and if you have enough material then be choosy about what activities and extracurriculars you share with the admissions teams.

For example, if you’re applying to major in theater, it may be wise to include woodshop club on your resume instead of that marketing conference, because that would show you could do well in stagecraft if the college admitted you to that major. Take the time to tailor your resume so it hits on the main points the college or major requires, and make sure it highlights the diversity of your interest and talent. Your dream school will immediately see how promising a student you are!

4. Take the SAT or ACT multiple times if necessary.

It doesn't look bad if you take the SAT or ACT multiple times. If anything, it shows your diligence and dedication to self-improvement! Since each test has a different structure, this is a great place for you to talk to admission representatives and figure out which test the college prefers to see and the minimum scores they require.

For the SAT, most institutions will let you keep the highest scores from each segment, while the ACT doesn't superscore. It’s different for every person, but we recommend taking the test until you receive a score you’re satisfied with. Whether it’s on your first try or your fifth, there’s no harm in repeating here!

5. Write an institution specific personal statement or cover letter.

When applying for college, it’s a bad idea to write just one general personal statement and send it to each school without any personalization. In your essay, specify why that school, and even further why that major at that school. Write a different essay for each college, and carefully convey your personality, goals and why you belong at that college above anywhere else.

6. Make an impact on the community outside the classroom.

To land a spot at your dream school it’s important to demonstrate who you are as a person outside the classroom. Colleges want to see that you’re promising not just academically, but that you’ll be influential in the campus community too. Whenever possible during high school, throw yourself into activities surrounding community service and entrepreneurship that benefit your hometown and grow you as a person. Whether you’re volunteering at a women’s shelter or contributing at a local startup, how you use your free time will make a huge impact on the admissions team’s decision.

7. Display your work ethic through a part time job.

Your dream school wants to see if you can juggle multiple responsibilities, so it’s a benefit to have a part-time job during high school if you’re able. Think of it as a precursor to college where you’ll likely be working on campus or having a local internship. Testing out a part-time job early will teach you valuable skills for balancing homework and work at the college level later.

The employer of choice for many high school students is definitely McDonald’s! It’s the perfect place for first-time job experience, and will act as a springboard to a great career later in life. Starting here positions you for success at your dream school.

8. Be timely about financial aid.

The immediate sticker price of college can seem daunting, which is why many student pursue financial aid through federal loans, work study and scholarships. Most financial aid is dependent on the time you send it in, and you’ll miss out on money if you apply too late. If you’re timely about searching out financial aid, it brings you one step closer to your dream school since you’ll actually have the means to attend. In this case, too long is too long, so don’t be tardy here!

9.Avoid senioritis.

Grades still count your senior year, so avoid sinking into a seniorities slump, or your dream school will be sure notice. In fact, your senior year is actually the perfect time to take opportunities in stride and plan for your future, instead of checking mentally checking out. Find time to network and make new connections, whether it’s with people at prospective colleges, a career field you’re interested in or even with alumni from your high school.

Senior year is also a great time to get a jump on practical skills you’ll need during college, like managing a debit and credit card, cooking for yourself and generally learning how to adult. Prove to your dream school that even though it’s senior year, you’re still going strong!

10. Look at how the school will help you reach your dreams and goals after college.

Our last tip for getting into your dream school? Make sure it’s actually perfect for you. When applying for college it’s easy to get caught up in the competitive nature of schools instead of looking at which is actually best for you. Will the institution support your personal growth? Does it have all the clubs you’d like to be part of? Do you like the class offerings for your intended major? All of these are important questions to be asking to help you determine if that campus is really the place you want to end up.

The school you attend will shape your life dramatically after college too, so take into account if it will help you reach your dreams and goals post-undergrad. If the answer is yes, then you’ve found your new home!

Want more insider tips? McDonald’s hosts education workshops across the country! Check out their workshop schedule to see if they’re coming to a city near you! Good luck future collegiettes, we can’t wait to see where you end up!

There Are SO Many Easter Eggs in Taylor Swift's 'Look What You Made Me Do' Video

$

0

Taylor Swift has finally made her comeback with “Look What You Made Me Do,” and whether you love or hate her new single, you have to admit the music video is on-point. It’s filled with Easter eggs that even the least devoted Swifties will appreciate.

The Nils Sjoberg tombstone

For a quick second, you can see a tombstone that reads Nils Sjoberg in the graveyard. That’s the pseudonym Taylor used when she wrote Calvin Harris’s hit “This Is What You Came For.”

Taylor buries her 1989 persona

Zombie “Out of the Woods” Taylor buries 2014 Met Gala Taylor. Since “Out of the Woods” was Taylor’s last single from 1989 and the 2014 Met Gala signaled the beginning of her 1989 era, Taylor is saying that version of herself is dead and gone.

A dig at Katy Perry or the Grammys?

There’s debate over what the scene of Taylor crashing a gold Maserati while holding a Grammy means. Some believe the hair and animal print clothes are nods to Katy Perry, and Taylor holding a Grammy is a jab at Katy because Katy’s never won the prestigious music award. Others think Taylor crashing a Maserati is a reference to Red—the title track of which featured the lyric “Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street”—not winning a Grammy.

Her takedown of streaming giants

Taylor references her war with streaming giants like Apple and Spotify when she robs the “Stream Co.” vault.

Squad factory

If you think all of Taylor’s squad members look alike, that’s because she manufactures them in a creepy warehouse. JK. But the rows of eerily identical, robot-like figures in this shot acknowledge criticism of Taylor’s friends looking like carbon copies of one another.

The “I heart T.S.” tank

Of course Tom Hiddleston’s iconic “I heart T.S.” tank had to make an appearance in this video. It’s just too good to pass up.

Long list of ex-lovers

Taylor is known for her long list of high-profile exes, and the eight men that stand behind her in this scene represent eight of the relationships she’s had while in the spotlight: Joe Jonas, John Mayer, Taylor Lautner, Jake Gyllenhaal, Conor Kennedy, Harry Styles, Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston.

All the old Taylor Swifts

Taylor Swift has taken on many identities since she first blew up. Just some of the old Taylors she claims are now dead include “You Belong With Me” Taylor, Red tour Taylor, 2015 Billboard Music Awards Taylor, Taylor Swift Award Taylor, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” Taylor, “Shake It Off” Taylor and country Taylor.

Squad tee

Taylor updated her “You Belong With Me” video T-shirt to include the names of her fave squad members. Some notable mentions? Blake and Ryan, Lena, Ed and Selena.

This treasure trove of goodies

The end of the “LWYMMD” video is filled with Easter eggs. You’ve got jabs at Taylor’s surprised face and the accusation that she’s always playing the victim. One Taylor tells another not to call her a bitch. A selfie-obsessed Taylor talks about getting receipts. And 2009 VMAs Taylor says she’d like to be excluded from this narrative. CLASSIC.

6. Beach Bum

Let's sculpt those thighs!!! I've got Part 1 of this two part barre inspired thigh scorcher comin' your way Give it a go or save it for later! ... Now babes, don't get lulled by the tranquil beachy surroundings into thinking this is some easy breezy workout with fluffy kittens scampering around you I KID YOU NOT your quads will be screaming within 1 round of this circuit Your legs may shake like crazy, and that is perfectly normal (as normal as your legs turning to noodles before your very eyes can be, at least ) ... You can perform these "chair" moves outside using a fence, the back of a bench, or some other railing. For you babes at home your kitchen sink is often the perfect height! ... While not shown, this circuit starts with 45 seconds of plyometrics to get that heart rate and muscles fired up before performing controlled micro movements in chair. Squat jumps, burpees, exploding lunges, and high knees are all great options. Anything that uses those leggies, gets you sweating and slightly out of breath is perfect ... I recommend performing this to a song with a strong beat. This will distract from the pain (sorry not sorry!!) and also help with counts and tempo. Sequence is listed below, but please check the comment for detailed form tips Happy sculpting my loves!!!! #hbsculptthighs ----------------- Perform 3 rounds Allow 30s rest between rounds. This is a great time to take a standing quad stretch! ***If you happen to be feeling extra masochistic , try squeezing a yoga block, cushion, or kiddie ball between your thighs, just above your knees. This will help target those inner thighs as well*** ----- jump squats (or other plyo move) 45s chair sequence: SLOWLY lower 2 inches down and up (8x) lower 1 inch down 1 inch up, (12x) tiny pulses w/ right heel lifted (15x) switch heels and repeat (not shown) (15x) alternating heels (20x) left heel + right = 2x lift both heels and pulse (20x) if both heels lifting feels too advanced, keep them lowered for this move and the next chair curls (10x)

Here's How You Can Help the Victims of Hurricane Harvey Right Now

$

0

Hurricane Harvey made landfall last Friday, just north of Corpus Christi, Texas, as a Category 4 hurricane. And, although the National Hurricane Center downgraded the hurricane on Saturday to a tropical storm, as Slate reported, Harvey still brought strong winds and flooding throughout parts of Texas.

Houston was one of the cities to be hit hardest by the storm. Several homes and power lines have collapsed, roads are closed off and. although hundreds have been saved by rescue workers, many people still remain in dire need of help.

According to USA Today, more than 75,000 people have called in to 911 for help; City Police Chief Art Acevedo stated that officers have rescued more than 2,000 people, and 185 rescue requests are still pending. On Monday, FEMA administrator Brock Long stated that more than 30,000 people will need shelters as a result of the hard rains and flooding —and more than 450,000 people were expected to seek disaster assistance, reported CNBC.

Harvey has devastated Houston and other parts of Texas, but you can help. If you live in the Houston area, the sheriff’s office is asking residents with boats to contact them and help with rescues. You can also offer a room for displaced residents to stay in for free through Airbnb.

If you don't live in Houston, don’t worry, there are plenty of other ways you can help. There are a number of organizations on the ground that you can donate to that will directly benefit the communities devastated by the storm. Remember to always do your research before sending money anywhere and that, often, the local, community-oriented groups are more prepared to help those in the most dire need:

  1. All Hands.

The All Hands volunteer team has staff on the ground in Texas to assist in response and recovery. All donations will go towards supporting communities affected by the storm, and any extra funds will be redirected toward future relief efforts.

  2. American Red Cross.

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance and disaster relief. Volunteers are in place on the ground in Texas to distribute supplies and assist shelters. The organization is urging people to call 1-800-RED CROSS, text HARVEY to 90999, or donate online to help those in need.

  3. Houston Humane Society.

Calling all animal lovers! The Houston Humane Society is rescuing pets and animals that have been affected by the storm.

  4. Southern Baptist Disaster Relief

With a network of Southern Baptist churches working together, this group provides disaster relief in the form of distributing hot food, clothes, water, and other essential supplies. They also work to rebuild homes.

  5. Blood Donations.

If you would like to donate blood, organizations like the Red Cross, Carter BloodCare, and South Texas Blood and Tissue Center are looking for donors.

  6. Don't forget Food Banks.

The Houston Free Press has compiled a list of food banks in the affected area of the storm. You can learn more about what they do, donate, or contact them directly to volunteer your time.

There are so many ways to help in the aftermath of a large disaster—even if you don't necessarily have the money to contribute. You can always donate blood, share (verified) relief-related posts on social media or just volunteer your time. Every little bit counts.

Trump Is Bringing Back The Program That Gave Police Departments Grenade Launchers & Other Military Gear

President Donald Trump plans to sign an Executive Order on Monday to repeal restrictions placed by President Barack Obama on police access to surplus military gear, such as large caliber weapons, armored vehicles, bayonets, and grenade launchers, according to a report from the New York Times.

The “1033” program, which allowed police officers to access to excess military gear first started in the 1990s as a way for the military to transfer the excess equipment to federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to fight the ongoing "war on drugs," CNN reported.

Obama first put the limits on the program that allowed police access to military grade weapons in the aftermath of several high-profile police killings of black men, most notably the 2014 shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. Brown’s death inspired protests and a nationwide call for justice for people killed by police officers. In Ferguson, where the demonstrations were most violent, St. Louis County police officers reportedly stood on top of armored vehicles and pointed sniper rifles at peaceful protestors, according to the Huffington Post.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the policy changes during a speech at the Fraternal Order of Police conference in Nashville,Tenn.

“We are fighting a multi-front battle: an increase in violent crime, a rise in vicious gangs, an opioid epidemic, threats from terrorism, combined with a culture in which family and discipline seem to be eroding further and a disturbing disrespect for the rule of law," Sessions stated to a large crowd of law enforcement officials, according to CNN.

Vanita Gupta, former head of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division under the Obama administration, stated that the guidelines on restricting access to military grade weapons were put into place to protect marginalized communities — and expressed concern over what repealing them will mean for the most vulnerable people in those communities.

"These guidelines were created after Ferguson to ensure that police departments had a guardian, not warrior, mentality. Our communities are not the same as armed combatants in a war zone," Gupta said in a statement, later released on Twitter. "It is especially troubling that some of this equipment can now again be used in schools where our children are sent to learn."

The announcement of the policy change quickly outraged civil rights organizations throughout the country.

“We have an epidemic in the United States of police using excessive force, particularly against people of color, with injuries and deaths mounting," Kanya Bennett of the American Civil Liberties Union told NPR.

5 Places to Fall in Love This Year

$
0
0

You still have that sun-kissed glow from summer and you’re wearing that super fabulous new dress you just bought… but did anyone else notice? Trying to catch the attention of a cute guy as the fall semester starts up can be hard—there are so many men on campus and so many places to find them! How do you find a setting that’s more intimate than a loud frat house on a crazy Friday night? Luckily, there are a ton of unconventional places to meet guys as you get into the swing of things this autumn!

Instead of: Your Dorm Hall Common Room

Try: Your Dorm Kitchen

There’s a reason why the old saying “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” has survived! Guys (especially college guys) gravitate towards any plate of food, so why not make sure you’re the one holding it? Not only can the dorm kitchen help you avoid only meeting people (ahem, hot guys) from your hall, but it’ll also help you sharpen your cooking skills!

Tasha Wang, a junior at Wesleyan University, used the dorm kitchen to her advantage last year. At first she was only using her cooking as a way to eat better food, but she soon found that many of the people coming around the kitchen were guys—very cute guys at that! “One night, I made super delicious sugar cookies with homemade frosting,” she says. “The next thing I know, I’m surrounded by about 15 guys, all asking if they can grab a cookie or two!”

Using food as a segue, Tasha was able to strike up more genuine conversations with some of the guys in her dorm over the course of several weeks and months. “At first they asked about my cooking, if I could cook and bake more often, stuff like that,” she says. “But eventually those conversations led to more intense discussions about other stuff, like classes and friends and feelings about being in college.”

Tasha’s tip for collegiettes trying to use food to get to a man’s heart? “Try baking first!” Tasha says. “Though guys will eat anything from steak to salad to spoiled milk, making cookies or cupcakes is an easy way for guys to take notice. And who doesn’t have a sweet tooth of sorts?”

Once you get a guy who loves food interested, try getting his number so you can text him the next time you cook (or when the food’s ready!). Talking about food is also a great way to keep any conversation going: what’s this guy’s favorite meal? Favorite dessert? Favorite food of all time? He shouldn’t be surprised if the next time he stops by, you’re cooking something he suggested!

Instead of: On-Campus Events

Try: Off-Campus Events

Many college clubs have retreats, away games or field trips, so there’s no better place to meet a guy than when exploring a brand new place together in a smaller, more intimate group!

Laura*, a sophomore at the Wesleyan University, met her boyfriend during a freshmen pre-orientation trip. They went kayaking with a small group of students, and she was able to get to know him better.

“We started out as friends, but getting to know him a setting different from a college campus was a great experience,” she says. “It was fun racing him in our kayaks, walking around and talking in the wilderness and just sort of being away from the fast pace of normal life, especially since I knew starting college was going to be nuts.”

Laura feels like she got to know him better than she would at school. “Freshman year can be especially overwhelming,” she says. “Everyone’s running around all the time, not knowing where to go, and it’s easy to completely forget who everyone is. By taking time to know John on that personal level before getting to school, we were able to grow even more once we were there.”

Off-campus events are relatively easy to sign up for; many groups on campus have something going on, so keep your eyes peeled and ask around! If not, create an off-campus event yourself. Talk with administrators, professors and other students about your college’s regulations for putting on an off-campus event. Even if you don’t connect with a potential partner, it’ll still be a great way to bond with other students!

Instead of: Tailgates

Try: Conferences or Panels

Many schools host a variety of conferences or panels for students about everything from social justice to academic rights to vegan food on college campuses. The nice thing about these events is that the people who care about the issues the most attend them, and this includes extremely passionate guys!

Marley*, a junior at the University of Texas, was sick of trying to meet guys at random pregames and tailgates. “I’m not a huge fan of the drunken party scene, especially the one that surrounds sports school culture,” she says. “It is so hard to really talk to anyone at those things. Everyone is wasted, guys are belligerent and you really can’t have any sort of conversation with anyone after the alcohol starts flowing.”

A couple months into her sophomore year, Marley attended a conference about women’s rights and ended up sitting next to a gorgeous blonde boy. “We listened to a speaker discuss sexual assault on college campuses,” she says. “But during a break right after the session, this guy and I started having a pretty awesome discussion about what we could do help women feel more secure in how universities handle sexual assaults.”

Overall, she felt it was a great conversation to have. “I got to meet someone whom I could talk to—sober, no less—about things I really cared about,” she says. “It was a small, relaxed setting (only about 20 people were in our session), so I was able to get to know him better than I would have during more traditional college events.”

The nice thing about smaller conferences and panels is that it’s easy to find conversation starters. Is there a cutie catching your eye? Casually ask him what he thought of the speaker(s). If he really liked the presentation, ask him if he’s involved with that particular cause on campus or if he knows any other events like this one that you could attend (who knows? Maybe you two could go together!). If he didn’t like it, there’s still room for discussion. Why didn’t he like it? If this particular panel wasn’t his style, what kind of activities is he into? There’s a way to make the most out of any situation!

Instead of: The Library

Try: The Campus Bookstore

Campus bookstores don’t typically seem like the most romantic places to meet someone (unless you’re an English major), but they can work, especially at the beginning of the semester!

First, there are the actual books. See a cutie getting the same psychology textbook as you? Ask if he’s in your class and what he’s heard about the professor. Is he a psych major, or he just taking this class for fun? If it ends up that you are in fact taking the same course, you now have a super attractive buddy to sit next to during the upcoming lecture (always a plus!).

Long lines in the bookstore are also a huge part of the beginning of fall semester. Hundreds of students are trying to get those last minute textbooks (and random college T-shirts) to start off the school year right. This interminable line can definitely include some nice guys. Strike up a conversation with the people standing in front of you and behind you. You’re all going to be waiting a long time for the cash register, so you might as well have some fun and meet some new people (including that adorable dude carrying a book by your favorite author!).

Instead of: Interest Clubs

Try: Volunteer or Community Service Organizations

Although interest clubs are great, it’s always good to expand your horizons and flex your Good Samaritan muscle by joining a volunteer or community service organization. Not only do you get to do good for your community, but you also get to meet some great guys who are doing the same thing!

Tasha also met several guys while volunteering with an organization that tutors elementary school kids close to Wesleyan’s campus. “It was so great seeing these guys interact with these kids,” she says. “You get to see them in a different light. And what’s cuter than a guy who’s genuine and wants to make the world a better place?”

As with her experiences cooking in her dorm kitchen, Tasha found that the volunteer organization was a great conversation starter with all the guys she worked with. “It was a lot less intimidating than trying to talk to them at a party,” she says. “I didn’t have to yell to be heard, and I didn’t have to dress up and look pretty for them to notice me. Instead, I got to know these guys as people who care about the world around them, and that was so cool to me!”

Though Tasha is part of several interest clubs on campus, she says that her work with the tutoring program helped her forge much stronger connections with her fellow volunteers. “I’ve actually got my eye on a boy that I met while tutoring,” she says. “I think what sealed the deal for me was watching him interact with this third grader who couldn’t understand decimals—it was great seeing him be so caring!”

Overall, you can find college guys anywhere; it’s all about seizing the right opportunity and striking up a conversation. The smaller and more intimate the space, the easier meeting a guy will be. Branch out of your usual spots this fall—you never know what you’ll find!

The ACLU Will Take Trump to Court Over His Transgender Military Ban

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced on Monday that they have filed a lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump's policy banning transgender individuals from serving in the military. Filing alongside the ACLU of Maryland on behalf of six trans people who serve in various capacities in the military, the civil rights organization argues in their complaint that the ban — which Trump announced unceremoniously over Twitter early in the morning of July 26 — violates the constitution by singling out and discriminating against trans people.

Word of the lawsuit comes after the Trump administration announced directives that would detail how the ban would be implemented — including urging the military to deny transgender applicants and to consider the "deployability" of current members when deciding whether to retain them.

"Our lawsuit argues that the ban violates the constitutional guarantees of equal protection and substantive due process by singling out transgender individuals for unequal and discriminatory treatment," Chase Strangio, Staff Attorney, ACLU LGBT & HIV Project wrote in a blog post on the ACLU website announcing the lawsuit. "Every justification that the president has offered in support of the ban has already been thoroughly reviewed and debunked by the Department of Defense itself when it adopted a policy permitting military service by transgender individuals last year."

Named in the complaint are Petty Officer First Class Brock Stone, Staff Sergeant Kate Cole, Technical Sergeant Tommie Parker, Airman First Class Seven Ero George, Petty Officer First Class Teagan Gilbert, and Senior Airmen John Doe. Each complainant has been in the military for a number of years — ranging between six and 26. Each of them are decorated and celebrated servicemen and women who have been praised throughout their careers.

In their blog post, the ACLU also takes aim at Trump administration's (multi-times debunked) argument that the costs of trans individuals serving is a "burden" on the military.

"Military, medical and legal experts have concluded that allowing open service by transgender individuals, many of whom have been serving in silence for years, does not disrupt military readiness or unit cohesion and imposes negligible costs," Strangio wrote. "By contrast, barring transgender individuals from joining the military and discharging those who are already serving is exceedingly costly and undermines national security and military readiness."

The ACLU's suit also follows one from the National Center for Lesbian Rights and GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders that was filed shortly after Trump's Twitter announcement — also arguing that the policy would violate the Fifth Amendment of the constitution.
