A Freshman Girl's Guide to College Dating

Say so long to your high school guys, and hello to college boys. As a freshman girl, eligible cuties seem to be everywhere, and guess what? They’re all looking at you. The attention can be fun, but when it comes down to it, the dating game in college is one that you’ll learn a lot about as time goes on—you might not be a pro right off the bat. To get started, Her Campus has put together a list of the DOs and DON’Ts of college dating. Who, you ask, knew there was such a science behind college guys, anyway? Aren’t they just a bunch of sex-hungry dudes? Well, maybe, but there might be a little bit more to it. Here are the guidelines of how to deal with the ones who are, and the ones who aren’t. Read ‘em and weep, girls.

DO make friends with the guys on your floor.

These guys will be super fun to hang out with once they get to know each other well, and you’ll be the cool girl who can get in on that action when you need a break from girl drama. On top of it, you might really connect with one of them.

DON’T rush into anything, though.

Hooking up with one or two of your hallmates within the first few days of school, however, is a definite no-no. When tempted to engage in “dormcest,” remind yourself that you’re going to have to face him—as well as everyone else on your floor, because they’re going to find out—for the rest of the year, no matter how good or bad your hook-up was.

DON’T write anybody off too soon.

Just because he’s sitting alone and doesn’t speak to anyone in the class doesn’t mean he’s a total lunatic. If you’re interested, all it takes is a slow pack-up-and-hang-back after class to initiate conversation.

DO go out to meet people.

Find out where the hot spots are each night of the week(end), and make sure to show up every once in a while. As a new student, you’ll get a feel for student life and get exposed to every kind of guy—frat boys, athletes, pre-meds, business students and artsy guys, too.

DON’T stay in talking to your high school boyfriend every night.

If you’ve broken up, there was a reason, and now is the time to move on. Your freshman year is meant for new beginnings, not dwelling on old relationships. Phone calls between Texas and Massachusetts won’t bring you back together—it’ll only keep you from meeting new people that are just beyond your dorm room door.

DO start off slowly if you’re not used to dating or just got out of a relationship.

Study hall or dining hall dates count, too! As casual as these settings are, it can be a great place to get to know a guy or meet someone new. Take it easy if you’re just getting your feet wet with the whole dating game, and don’t feel a need to rush into anything intense.

DON’T go out every single night.

A little mystery never hurt anyone… and it’ll do wonders for your grades, too. A mother’s wisest words—if guys see you going out night after night, how will they ever get to miss you? Show face as often as you can without being that girl that everyone expects to run into.

DO look around your classes for guys.

If they’re showing up for class at all, then you know they’ve at least got something going for them. And hey, maybe he’s even smart and organized enough for you to make him your “study buddy.” Study dates are pretty much the best dates most college girls can hope for within the first month or so of school (news flash: college guys are usually cheap).

DON’T make him think you’re interested if you’re not just because you don’t want the perks to go away.

It’s not fair to the guy if you’re just not that into him, but you keep him around because he’s, like, obsessed with you. The puppy dog thing will get old after a while, leaving him feeling stupid/angry and you feeling unfulfilled, annoyed and guilty – not to mention that other guys you might actually become interested in will get the wrong idea.

DO engage in a random hook-up (safely), if you want to.

They’re part of the college lifestyle, and you can choose if you want to engage in them or not (certainly, you can avoid making out with the guy you’ve been dancing with all night if you’re just not that into it). It’s up to you to decide if that’s your style, but know that it happens and it doesn’t have to be scandalous or “slutty”—but just, in fact, kind of fun. As long as you’re not going crazy by swapping saliva with every guy you lay eyes on, random hook-ups can be fun and can lead to date parties, formals and maybe even a real date! If nothing else, at least you can get an exciting night or two out of them—just make sure to stay safe and keep your friends posted on your whereabouts.

DON’T count on them turning into anything serious.

Most of the time, dance-floor make-outs (DFMO’s) start and finish on the dance floor and only go as far as a phone number swap. Take these experiences for what they are, and don’t think he’s fallen in love with you simply because he’s been attached to your mouth all night.

DO accept invitations/initiations from older guys.

Attention from upperclassmen is surely a plus in any freshman’s book, because they’re seasoned. They know what’s up in this whole college world, and it can be quite nice to have a hot, older guy show you the ropes – he’ll let you know what parties are happening, bring you to date parties, introduce you to his friends and be a pretty face to show up in your tagged pictures on Facebook. That said, don’t feel the need to hook up with him purely because he’s “older and wiser…” because he may just turn out to be pretty stupid.

DON’T feel pressured to have sex.

No, we can’t be certain that what all guys are looking for is sex, but that’s definitely a part of college hook-ups. He might want it and he might even ask for it, but if you’re uncomfortable, it’s not up to you to give it to him. Know your boundaries and ask him—whether you know him well or not—to respect your boundaries. If he doesn’t, walk away.

DO avoid those guys that hook up with your entire group of friends.

There are always the guys that have no qualms about coming in between a group of girl friends just to get some action. He has no problem with hooking up with each one of your friends by jumping from one to the next. He might have no idea that what he’s doing is hurting your relationships with your friends, but it’s up to you guys to stop him by cutting him out of the equation.

DON’T get too attached to said upperclassmen.

He’s graduating sooner than you are, and he knows it. Upperclassmen usually aren’t in it for the long haul when they seek out a freshman girl that they’d like to hook up with. Just because he’s lent you a bunch of attention one night, don’t assume that he’ll be chasing after you for the rest of the semester.

DO be open to going on dates with anyone.

That is, of course, presuming that dates aren’t obsolete anymore. While a lot of guys don’t even have the courtesy to take a girl out for dinner – or even coffee?! – there are some who like to kick it old school and go for the dinner and a movie. If you’re looking for companionship of any kind, there’s no reason to refuse a casual invitation to lunch or dinner.

DON’T expect him to take you out to fancy meals all the time.

But at the same time, know that college culture is changing, and going out on the “dates” we see happening in movies or the ones we hear about from our parents simply doesn’t happen anymore, for the most part. These guys are most likely on a budget, so fancy dinner dates aren’t always an option. There’s nothing wrong with a nice fro-yo in the quad, though!

DON’T count on finding a boyfriend right away.

Keep in mind that as many hotties as you see on a regular basis, most of them aren’t right for you. It’s about finding the right one that’s interested in having the same type of relationship that you are, no matter what type that may be. Also, be wary of becoming BF-GF with someone on Day 1 of orientation. Do some exploring before you settle on one guy to get hot and heavy with right away.

DO start a relationship if you find someone special.

Maybe you’ll find him on day one of classes, or maybe it’ll take until senior year for you to realize that the guy you’ve been friends with all along suddenly seems like he’s ready to take the plunge with you. But if it feels right, don’t hold back, and find a way to make it work.

DO know that people move on quickly in college.

Hook-ups last for any length of time – you can be attached to one particular guy for several months, or only for a matter of days and it can still be considered “hooking up.” Go figure. At any rate, don’t be surprised if a guy has eyes for you on Thursday and then you spot him spitting game to another girl on Saturday. Don’t get jealous or crazy and be that girl who slaps him in the middle of the party. Instead, try to figure out what he’s interested in before you hook up with him, so you know what to expect from him after the fact.

DON’T hold back if you want something more out of a hook-up.

If you silence yourself, you’ll only end up unhappy and wasting your time. He may not be taking your relationship as seriously as you wished he would if it started out as a random hook-up. If your feelings intensify and you want to take it to the next level, let him know and don’t make him guess. If you’re afraid of scaring him off, leave your feelings on the table and the situation open-ended. This is his relationship too, and you don’t wish to monopolize it, so ask him what it is that he wants out of it. Chances are that otherwise he won’t just guess that you want to be treated to romantic dinners and you’ll just end up getting frustrated and angry.

DO try to meet guys without a gaggle of girls surrounding you.

While girls’ night out is always one of the best nights of the week, do try to distance yourself from your pack of besties for a little bit each night. No guy wants to approach you if your six best friends are by your side eyeing him with those girly judgmental glares.

DON’T get left places alone or go home with a guy you don’t know…and having made out with him all night doesn’t make him any more familiar.

If you do manage to separate from your girlfriends for a few minutes, keep in touch with them to make sure they’re not leaving the club/bar/party without you. It’s risky to leave with a guy you’ve just met – especially if one of his friends who “didn’t drink tonight” is driving – even if he seems genuine. Exchange numbers instead, and stay with your girlfriends.

College will open doors for you in the way of the dating scene, but it always helps to take things slowly and be wary. Stay grounded and always question people’s intentions, while making sure that your own are as clear as crystal. Your future boyfriend is out there somewhere, whether he’s sitting next to you in class or isn’t even enrolled at your school. And you’ll find him, too... you just may have to kiss a few frogs first and have a lot of single and mingling fun.

The ACLU Is Suing Washington D.C. Transit for Rejecting Political Ads

On Wednesday the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced that it will be suing Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) for rejecting and removing ads in what they view as a violation of the First Amendment, USA Today reports. The irony? One of the rejected ads, paid for by the ACLU, was literally a copy of the First Amendment.

The banned advertisements included one showing the Prophet Muhammad from the AFDI, and another supporting access to an abortion pill from Carafem, USA Today reports. In addition, PETA’s advertisement featuring a pig, along with the text “I’m ME, Not MEAT. See the Individual. Go Vegan,” was banned, along with the ALCU’s featuring the text of the First Amendment in English, Spanish and Arabic. Milo Yiannopolous’ advertisement for his new book was also removed after riders complained.

“To put it mildly, these plaintiffs have nothing in common politically. But together, they powerfully illustrate the indivisibility of the First Amendment. Our free speech rights rise and fall together—whether left, right, pro-choice, anti-choice, vegan, carnivore, or none of the above,” the ACLU said in a statement

According to The Los Angeles Times, a policy adopted in 2015 by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority places a ban on advertisements that are “intended to influence members of the public regarding an issue on which there are varying opinions” or “intended to influence public policy.” The ACLU argues that this policy is too vague and could lead WMATA to arbitrarily reject advertisements on a case-by-case basis, the Times reports. They also argue that the ideas presented in the four banned advertisements might cause outrage with some individuals, but this could be said of any advertisement.

Milo Yiannopoulos told the Los Angeles Times via text message that he was “glad that the ACLU has decided to tackle [this] real civil rights issue.” He added, “Free speech isn’t about only support speech you agree with, it is about supporting all speech—especially the words of your enemies. Strong opponents keep us honest.”

It seems as if the ACLU will indeed have a strong opponent in this lawsuit. “WMATA intends to vigorously defend its commercial advertising guidelines, which are reasonable and view-point neutral,” Sherri Ly, a spokesperson for the transit system, said of the advertisement policy, according to USA Today.

"At the end of the day, it’s a real shame that the WMATA didn’t accept the ACLU’s advertisement—the agency could really have used that refresher on the First Amendment," the ACLU said in their statement.

Taylor Swift Just Testified About Being Groped at a Meet-and-Greet

Taylor Swift is taking a stand against sexual assault by countersuing former radio DJ David Mueller for just $1 even though he is requesting $3 million in damages from Swift for what he says are false assault claims, Cosmopolitan reports. Her goal clearly isn't to make money off the case, but rather to raise awareness that touching a woman inappropriately is never okay.

Mueller initially sued Swift, claiming she falsely accused him of lifting her skirt and groping her butt during a photo op at a backstage meet-and-greet in Denver in 2013, Gossip Cop reports. Swift testified Thursday. "It was a definite grab, [a] very long grab," she said. "It was long enough for me to be completely sure it was intentional.”

She went on to explain the assault in detail. “He stayed on my bare ass cheek as I lurched away from him uncomfortably. The first couple of milliseconds, I thought it must be a mistake. I moved to the side very quickly.”

Mueller's attorney, Gabriel McFarland, attempted to rebuke these claims by making accusations against Swift's security team, as well as saying he couldn't visibly see the assault taking place in the photograph. Swift promptly replied, "Because my ass is located on the back of my body."

Swift intends to teach a public lesson with this case—she hopes that her actions serve “as an example to other women who may resist publicly reliving similar outrageous and humiliating acts,” her lawsuit reads.

Swift's attorney, J. Doug Baldridge, said in his opening statement, "She's not trying to bankrupt this man. She's just trying to tell people out there that you can say no when someone puts their hand on you. Grabbing a woman's rear end is an assault, and it's always wrong. Any woman—rich, poor, famous or not—is entitled to have that not happen."

Any monetary winnings from the case will reportedly be donated to “charitable organizations dedicated to protecting women from similar acts of sexual assault and personal disregard,” according to Entertainment Weekly.

As the trial continues in Denver, we applaud Swift's efforts to protect her body and defend the rights of women.

The Legend family is, well, legendary to say the least. Chrissy Teigen regularly blows us away with her killer tweets and John Legend's soothing voice is obviously incredible, but their baby, Luna, recently stole the spotlight in a too-cute-to-handle Instagram posted by her mom. In the video, Luna is watching her dad on Sesame Street, and she immediately beams when she sees him on screen. She even points and says "dada." HOW. FREAKING. CUTE.

In the caption Chrissy explained that Luna was sick when John filmed the episode and couldn't make it to the set, so this was her first time seeing it. "When John first posted this video to instagram, Luna had no idea what Sesame Street was," Chrissy wrote. "She was sick and couldn't go to set when John was filming so all the characters made this video for her. This is her first time watching it and knowing how freaking epic it is."

John shared the clip on his Instagram back in December when the episode aired. He specifically made the video for his daughter and had all of the Sesame Street characters say hello to Luna—basically every toddler's dream.

One day Luna will be very excited by who daddy hung out with today

Leslie Jones is probably the biggest Game of Thrones fan out there. She’s known for live-tweeting episodes, and she doesn’t hold back.

Unfortunately, last week Leslie didn't get to live tweet the episode because she was sick, but none of us was prepared for how she would make it up to us. She and fellow comedian Seth Meyers watched the episode together on his show, Late Night with Seth Meyers. May I present to you “Game of Jones.” (You may remember Seth and Leslie did this once before in 2016 with their friend Kenan Thompson.)

Hilarious. When Varys showed up and Leslie gave him a big hug—so cute!

So, uh, Seth and Leslie, when are you going to do this again? Because I need this in my life.

Aaron Carter Asked Chloë Grace Moretz on a Date After Finding Out He Was Her Childhood Crush

It's no secret that we all had the biggest crush on Aaron Carter back in the day. He was like the Zac Efron of our early childhood. Chloë Grace Moretz felt the same way.

In an interview with Variety, Chloë dished about her childhood crush. "When I was 4 years old I thought Aaron Carter was so cool. My friend, when we were both little babies back in Georgia, she liked Aaron Carter, too. We used to fight about who would date Aaron Carter one day. Who knows? Maybe we'll meet.”

I don’t know if Chloë was ready to get this response, but Aaron didn't hesitate to ask her on a date. "Mmmm may I take you to dinner @ChloeGMoretz ?" he tweeted. He later followed up, "Hey @ChloeGMoretz - let's set up a date. The crush is mutual."

Chloë hasn't replied yet, but I’ll be over here fangirling until she does.

9 Questions To Ask Yourself Before You Change Your Major

$
0
0

Whether you’re feeling isolated in a male-dominated major or doubting whether your lifelong dream is still your dream, switching your major can seem like a fix to all your problems. Maybe the first one you picked was a mistake, or someone pressured you into it. Maybe you’ve been at it for two years and you’re starting to have a few doubts, but you don’t want to waste your hard work. How can you know you’re making the right decision this time around? Here are nine things to keep in mind while you’re deciding what to do—whether that means changing your major or not.

1. Is a specific major crucial to the job you want?

Not all jobs require a particular degree, and hiring managers often look more at the actual experience on your resume rather than the department on your diploma. Your clubs, extracurricular activities, internships and part-time jobs might already be helping you towards your career goals. On the other hand, if you want that competitive web developer job at Facebook or Google right out of undergrad, a computer science degree might be necessary. (Though, fun fact: a classics major might be good for med school, as long as you can fit in your science pre-requisites.)

This is also a great excuse to reach out for informational interviews with people in industries or companies you’re interested in. They’ve already been through what you’re dealing with—after all, hindsight is 20/20. They’ll be able to give you a real-world perspective and tell you how important those classes are in an actual workplace. Talking to seniors in your major and other majors can be really helpful, too. They may have switched majors themselves and know firsthand what it’s like to try to jumpstart a career.

2. Is your major a good fit for your personality?

This could be a classic case of “it seems perfect on paper,” but the day-to-day reality doesn’t mesh well with your natural talents and abilities. Maybe you’ve discovered that your major doesn’t unleash your creativity—or conversely, you need more logical structure. If you’re an introvert, business school’s ubiquitous group projects might sound like a nightmare—if you’re a people person, long nights coding alone in the computer science lab might drive you crazy. Think about what you loved to do as a kid, ask friends how they would describe you, and try online career aptitude quizzes (disclaimer: choose a site more scientifically sound than BuzzFeed).

"In time, you'll learn more about how you're naturally wired and you learn more about what really puts fuel in your soul,” says Steve Olsher, author of the New York Times bestselling book What Is Your WHAT? Discovering the ONE Amazing Thing You Were Born To Do. “Stop doing things that no longer bring you fulfillment. At the end of the day, I really think it just boils down to what your 'what' is, your what is really what is in your DNA.”

3. Are you just burnt out or bored?

There’s a big difference between lack of motivation and lack of passion. Make sure that changing your major is something you NEED, not just something you think might make you feel better in the moment. When you’re slogging through huge lecture intro classes, pulling long hours at your part-time campus job and trying to maintain a social life, it’s easy to become exhausted. Everyone gets tired of the grind sometimes—just don’t let it cloud your judgment. However, if you’re struggling in all your classes or going to bed miserable every night, it might be time to do something about it.

“I dreaded going to my classes,” says Hannah Yohnk, a junior at the University of Wisconsin. “Before the semester started, I was excited to take the classes that finally applied to my major. Once they started, I lost interest. I studied for hours, pulled all-nighters to try to understand the material and nothing made sense. This helped me realize that I wasn't studying the right thing.”

Jenna Bouquot, a junior at Kenyon College, agrees. “I was absolutely miserable,” she says, even though she’d planned for years on being a chemistry major. “I loved my professors and the students in my classes, but I could not get myself to engage in the material, no matter how hard I tried. At first, I thought it was just a bad semester, but by the spring of my sophomore year, I knew that I just wasn't passionate about the material I'm learning.”

If you fall into a pattern of failing classes, or nothing about the subject “clicks,” your current major may not be right for you. Hard work is important, but if that hard work never pays off, that’s a huge red flag.

4. Do you have time?

Four years can feel like a lifetime when you first step foot on campus, but your time at college is precious and limited. If graduating with your friends and classmates is important to you, understand that changing your major could require you to take extra-heavy course loads or summer school to finish “on time.” But if changing your major will keep you in classrooms long after you were originally planning to graduate, never fear—there are other options.

Many schools have minors or certificate programs available from their departments, so you can gain the knowledge and experience you want without derailing your timeline. If your school doesn't offer these, look into outside accreditation, too. For example, if you're passionate about graphic design but don’t want to change your anthropology major, take the Adobe certification exams or try an online course from Coursera or Lynda. While these certifications may come with a fee, they’re still a lot cheaper than an extra year of tuition.

5. Have you talked to an adviser?

An adviser might be able to assure you that those required intro classes are just a necessary evil, not a preview of your entire degree. If you chose a business major to pursue marketing but hate your mandatory Stock Market 101 lecture, keep in mind that many majors have a wide range of required classes. They’ve seen many other students go through the same process and will be able to help clarify whether you hate the major or just the classes you’re taking right now. Don’t forget to talk to advisers in the majors you’re considering as well! They can help you transition into your new path.

“My advisor was particularly helpful because she was realistic,” says Honie Moon, a junior at the University of Washington. “She gave me hard facts about what it took to be accepted into the major I wanted to pursue, how realistic my chances were, and how my statistics compared to past admittances.”

6. Is it affecting your mental health?

Struggling in a major can wreak havoc on your psyche. If your stress is out of control or you’re experiencing panic attacks, you need to re-evaluate how your schoolwork is affecting your health. Remember your self-worth isn’t defined by that competitive major or your projected career earnings.

“Sit back and ask yourself if you’re happy,” says Lexi Hill, a senior at the University of South Carolina. “I wasn’t doing well in my business-related courses, and was spending hours with a tutor trying to keep up. At the end of the day, I was miserable and decided to switch my major and focus on subjects that have always interested me.”

In the end, you’ll be so much happier, more productive and successful in a major you truly love, instead of going through the motions and suffering in a field of study that isn’t right for you. If your major or schoolwork is negatively affecting you, reach out to trusted friends or a counselor at your school’s health center. Your mental health is of utmost importance.

7. Have you done your research?

Look before you leap. How many of your credits will count toward this new major? If you switch to this new major, will you need to get a master’s degree to pursue the career you want? What does the job market look like? Do you know what the day-to-day life of studying and working in a particular field is like?

“Go out into the ‘real world’ and get a job or internship or apprenticeship and do some work in the field of study you think you want to pursue,” Mr. Olsher suggests. “That doesn't cost you anything. College is expensive, and if you keep changing your major, you'll spend money doing it. In an internship or job, you're getting paid to learn.”

Make sure you fully understand the consequences, good and bad, before you commit to switching your path.

8. Are you committed to making it work?

A new academic path can come with a whole new set of challenges. You’ll need to find your bearings to reorganize and refocus on your new goal. When you make the switch, you should be ready to give your new path 100 percent effort.

On the other hand, finally pursuing something you’re passionate about can do wonders for your motivation and drive. “Switching my major lit a fire under my booty so to speak,” says Lexi. “I was nervous and unsure about the decision and what effects it could have on my future, so I threw myself into anything that came my way, despite apprehensions or nerves!” Making the switch might give you just the inspiration you’ve been needing.

9. Are you letting fear control your decision?

Cold feet can happen for lots of reasons. Some of them are legitimate—others, not worth putting your hopes and dreams on hold for. For one thing, it can be nerve-wracking to realize your life isn’t going to play out the way you thought it would. “I was nervous because my previous major was what I claimed was ‘my dream’ since I was in middle school and I was scared to admit that it wasn't what I imagined it would be,” Hannah says. You’ve grown up, and your goals might have, too. That’s not a bad thing!

Fear of the future can also involve what your salary might be or how your job prospects might change. “The biggest thought in the back of my head was financial security in the future,” Lexi says. “I had always been told that business majors had a better chance of securing a job – and a high paying one – after college. I don’t regret switching my major at all; in fact, if I hadn’t I wouldn’t be the president of the Her Campus chapter at USC,” she adds. Keep in mind that a new major brings new opportunities.

Changing your major is a serious and potentially life-changing decision, so make sure you’ve really thought it through before making such a big choice. Lexi adds, “Keep your parents in the loop about your major-switch, too.” They’ve known you for longer than just about anyone, and if they’re helping to pay for your college education, this information is especially relevant to them.

Ultimately, your major doesn’t define you but finding the one that’s right for you can make life—and achieving your goals—so much easier. As Hannah says, “It [was] one of the best decisions of my life.” It might end up being one of yours, too.

Dean Unglert Just Explained Why Rachel May Not Want Peter as the Bachelor

Bachelor Nation is still recovering from the emotional Bachelorette finale earlier this week. Rachel Lindsay and her fiancé Bryan Abasolo are discussing their engagement left and right, while some fans of runner-up Peter Kraus hope that a stint as the Bachelor is in his future. However, Rachel has reportedly claimed that she’d rather not have anyone from her season as the Bachelor. Given this tidbit and Rachel’s subtle dig during the live finale about the Bachelorette process not working for Peter, contestant Dean Unglert spoke out about why Rachel is seemingly against Peter’s TV future.

Refinery29 says Dean addressed the issue on Bachelor alums Ben Higgins and Ashley Iaconetti’s podcast Almost Famous. Anyone who watched this season knows that Dean is a total sweetheart, so unsurprisingly, he tried to see both sides of the situation. “I’ve had my jealous moments as well, so it’s really hard to say,” he said in the podcast. “But [Rachel] was so close to both Bryan and Peter and Eric obviously too. I definitely understand that she doesn’t want to relive any of their romantic moments within an entire season.”

Although she told Entertainment Tonight she was possessive of her season’s men, Rachel has named Alex Bordyukov as who she’d want to see as the next Bachelor. When asked about her choice, Dean seemed a little unsure, supporting his best bud Peter. “You look at it objectively and it seems like Peter’s got the whole package,” he said. “I think that she was just so emotionally attached to Peter...so she just isn’t ready to see him thrust back into that spotlight.”

Dean’s opinion makes total sense, and Peter himself has said that he isn’t even thinking about being the Bachelor. Either way, I hope that Rachel would still support Peter if being a Bachelor star is in his future.

Video of Penn State's Fatal Beta Theta Pi Hazing Was Deleted

Crucial surveillance video showing the activity of a Penn State fraternity that is currently being investigated in the hazing death of a student was deleted, CNN reports. Sophomore Tim Piazza consumed copious amounts of alcohol during a hazing ritual at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity house this February and died after receiving injuries from falling down stairs. Following the truth about the video status, more charges are being brought against at least one of the 18 fraternity brothers at fault in the event’s trial.

Although police initially believed that surveillance cameras in the fraternity basement, where students were drinking, weren’t working on Feb. 2, State College police Det. Dave Scicchitano now says differently. At a preliminary hearing regarding Piazza’s death that has lasted several days, Det. Scicchitano testified that he believes all video before the morning of Feb. 6 was deleted.

The court had already seen footage from the frat house’s first floor showing Piazza stumbling after drinking a combination of vodka, beer and wine, known as the "gauntlet." The tape shows him unconscious and being carried to a couch until he wakes and eventually disappears near the basement steps. According to prosecutors, Piazza was “ashen and stiff” when his fraternity brothers allegedly called police over 12 hours after his fall.

“There is no better way to describe the existence of videotape of that basement other than the word stunning,” said Piazza family attorney Tom Kline. “It is a fact that I don’t think any of the defense lawyers thought was ever going to surface.”

According to CNN, the hearings have been extremely tense, involving 16 defense attorneys often disagreeing with each other about details. The revelation about the deleted video is sure to influence how the rest of the trial goes. Court procedures are believed to continue this Friday with the possibility of a judge’s ruling by the end of the day.

Raven-Symoné Is Totally up for Appearing in a Possible 'Princess Diaries 3'

Following The Princess Diaries author Meg Cabot’s confirmation that a Princess Diaries 3 script exists, Raven-Symoné has joined franchise stars Julie Andrews, Anne Hathaway and Chris Pine in totally jumping on board for a third film. According to HelloGiggles, the former Disney Channel star, who has returned to her Disney home for the That’s So Raven revival, is more than willing to spend time in Genovia again.

“Do I get to sing with Julie Andrews again?!” Raven said when asked about the possible film in a BuzzFeed interview. “Yeah I’m going back on Princess Diaries 3! If I get to sing with Julie Andrews again that would be awesome! I mean, I’m a Mary Poppins fan, so that’s just heaven for me.”

Raven played Mia’s royal friend Princess Asana in Princess Diaries 2, memorably performing a duet with Julie that you totally memorized as a kid. Seeing as Anne won an Oscar for Les Miserables and Chris was a swoony prince in the musical adaptation Into the Woods, I’m rooting for a musical number with the entire cast in the third movie.

At this rate, all we need for a perfect Princess Diaries 3 is the return of Fat Louie the cat. Fingers crossed for an official confirmation of the movie soon!

What It’s Like To Be In College, As Told By Our Favorite Disney Characters

When you went on your first college tour, you were so pumped to be there.

Then you get to college ready to have the best grades, social life, and dating life ever.

But the campus is enormous.

And you think your dorm is going to be like,

But really, it’s the size of a jail cell.

Not to mention, sometimes you walk into your room and your roommate… isn’t alone.

And you’re just like,

Oh, and the dorm showers are freezing.

And you get to the dining hall and the food is like,

But somehow you manage to gain the Freshman 15 anyways.

At the beginning of the semester, you couldn’t be more excited about your classes!

But then you get one of those professors who’s like,

Or one who is terrifying.

So you try to take notes in class like a good student.

But all of a sudden you get a bunch of papers and exams all at once.

So you prep for your exam like a boss.

…even when your friends distract you in the library.

And you walk in confident that you’re going to pass.

But you get your grade back and you’re like,

So you go to the professor’s office hours and you’re like,

But your professor is just like,

And then there’s the dating scene in college. In high school, you couldn’t wait to meet college guys!

You expect college dating to be like,

But really it’s full of frat guys.

You try to flirt with a guy and think you look like this,

When really you look like this,

And there’s always that girl who tries to steal your guy and you’re just like,

There’s that guy who only sends you booty call texts…

…and you respond anyways.

And there’s the guy who doesn’t text you at all and you’re like,

So you find another guy.

And this time he’s a keeper (if you’re lucky).

Frat parties were a mystical thing in high school. You think they’re going to be all like,

And you walk in the house all dressed up ready to get your flirt on.

But frat parties are really like,

And there’s always that one creepy guy hitting on you

And you’re just like,

And after a little too much Jungle Juice, you walk home like,

And then all of a sudden it’s your senior year, and people start asking you what you’re planning on doing with your liberal arts major.

And you’re just like,

And then you start worrying about finding a job after graduation.

To quote Jane…

And then you actually have to graduate, and you have no idea where the time went.

It turns out, between the tiny dorms, the nasty dining hall food, those crazy classes, the parties, and the dating snafus, you made a lot of great memories in college.

Do we really have to graduate?

Zedd Admits He Wasn't Ready for the Fame That Came With Dating Selena Gomez

Remember when Selena Gomez’s collaboration with Zedd on “I Want You to Know” turned into something more? To be honest, I only remember Selena’s on-and-off mess with Justin Bieber and am aware of her current (and way more ship-worthy) relationship with The Weeknd. Sometimes stars date for a short amount of time and it’s easy to forget they were ever involved, especially if the relationship simply fizzled out without a dramatic public fight.

Zedd, a highly successful DJ, is no stranger to being in the music spotlight. However, his romantic endeavors before Selena were all very quiet. In a new interview with Billboard, the EDM producer, whose real name is Anton Zaslavski, revealed that he wasn’t ready for the whole world to scrutinize his private life. I’m sure nobody would be.

“Reporters were calling my parents. People were hacking my friends’ phones. I was pissed. [Though] I kind of knew what I was getting myself into,” he said. “She is one of the most talked about people in the world, but I had no idea how much that would change my life.”

Despite the negatives that came with Selena’s world, it seems the two ended on good terms. Selena confirmed her fondness for Zedd in an interview with New Zealand radio show The Edge Afternoons in 2015. “I adore Anton a lot and I definitely had a thing with him, which was nice,” she said.

It’s heartwarming to know that the two still respect one another two years after the fling ended. Could we see Zedd at Selena’s future wedding (to The Weeknd hopefully)? I doubt it would turn into a scene from You Again.

What You Need to Know About Trump & North Korea

$

President Trump has had his eye on North Korea since Inauguration Day (and not in a friendly kind of way). Obviously, with North Korea's reputation, Americans have been worried about the country's capabilities. But with Trump's "blunt" words directed towards their leader, Kim Jong-un, tensions have escalated. There's been a lot about these two powerful countries in the news lately, so here's what you need to know.

Trump's been throwing shade since January.

His tweet made Americans fear for a World War III. But instead of presenting what exactly he'll do about it, Trump just asserts his dominance, as though that will be enough.

North Korea was establishing itself as a threat early on.

In March, North Korea fired test missiles toward Japan. This was when the U.S. was preparing a new defense system with South Korea, which Japan was also considering bringing in. It was a terrifying threat to Japan, and pushed Trump to get serious about his policies for North Korea. Oh, and it made China pretty mad too.

In July, North Korea got everyone's attention.

On July 4, it was confirmed that North Korea launched an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile. According to The New York Times, the North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency said the missile (Hwasong-14) could definitely hit the United States. And then everyone started freaking out. "Mr. Kim’s repeated missile tests show that a more definitive demonstration that he can reach the American mainland cannot be far away, even if it may be a few years before he can fit a nuclear warhead onto his increasingly powerful missiles," the Times reports.

So, Kim Jong-un could put a nuclear warhead onto a missile and shoot it all the way to Alaska? And then he made fun of us. “I guess they are not too happy with the gift package we sent them for the occasion of their Independence Day. We should often send them gift packages so they won’t be too bored," he told the Korean news agency.

So, Trump decided to make his own threat.

In theory, this tweet is a lot scarier than Kim Jong-un's jokes. Trump is basically saying, "You want us? Come and get us!" Truthfully, the tweet made a lot of Americans feel safe. They want someone who is going to take action instead of saying a lot and doing nothing. But Trump should know better than to tweet so irresponsibly.

Why is this tweet so dangerous? Vox News reports that being "fully in place" would require "deploying a huge number of new military assets beyond what the U.S. currently has stationed in South Korea and East Asia." Lt. Colonel Christopher B. Logan, a Pentagon spokesperson told Vox that there have been "no changes" related to the latest North Korea incident. So what Trump tweeted isn't actually true, but could still put us in danger by making North Korea think striking us first is a good idea.

I guess Trump is all talk and no action just yet. His words (and tweets) have so much influence on the actions of countries around the world—if only he would use them to his advantage.

Trump Wants Sen. McConnel to “Get Back To Work” on Repealing & Replacing Obamacare

$

While President Donald Trump is on a working vacation, he tweeted that he wants Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to “get back to work” on health care repeal and reform, according to CNN. At least Trump claims that he’s working while he’s golfing for the 21 time since his inauguration. Regardless, Trump thinks that McConnell should be doing more about the whole repeal and replace deal.

Trump is clearly upset that repealing and replacing Obamacare is taking longer than he had expected. But health care reform of any kind takes time. Granted, those of us who don’t want any variation of Trumpcare to replace the Affordable Care Act don’t really mind the wait.

McConnell explained why he hasn’t lived up to Trump’s expectations to ABC News. “Part of the reason I think that the storyline is that we haven’t done much is because, is in part, the president and others have set these early timelines about things need to be done by a certain point,” he said. You mean replacing a national health care policy takes time? Shocking.

Apparently, Trump’s somewhat aggressive tweets about McConnell were sparked by the rest of McConnell’s interview with ABC News. “Our new president, of course, has not been in this line of work before. And I think he had excessive expectations about how quickly things happen in the democratic process. So part of the reason I think people feel we're underperforming is because too many artificial deadlines—unrelated to the reality of the complexity of legislating—may not have been fully understood.” Trump might have thought that McConnell was personally attacking his credibility, but let’s face it, Trump doesn’t have any previous experience in health care.

While Trump obviously seems pretty peeved that McConnell wasn’t able to meet his expectations, at least Trump gave him some form of backhanded compliment positive reinforcement by telling him he “can do it.” Maybe Trump took a memo from Shia LaBeouf’s infamous “Just Do It” motivational video. Regardless, I can’t wait to see what other “tough love tactics” Trump is going to use on his other health care reform scapegoats.

The Perfect On-Campus Job for Your Personality

Whether you’re paying for tuition, books,an apartment or just afroyo addiction, a job can make your college years significantly easier to afford. And where’s the first place you should look to find one? On campus, of course!

But not all positions are created equal—and a role that’s not right for your personality will make you dread every day of work. We’ve compiled a list of the most common campus jobs and their pros and cons so that every day you’re hustlin’ in a role that’s ideal for your individual strengths and preferences.

1. For the Mama Bear: Resident Assistant

If you’re constantly giving your friends advice, taking care of people when they’re sick (from both viruses and vodka) and taking charge in stressful situations, being a resident assistant (RA) could be your perfect on-campus job.

RAs live in college housing and assume responsibility for the approximately 20 to 50 students living in their assigned section—usually a dorm floor. Their main duty is to create a safe and supportive environment for students. A typical RA serves as a role model, a source of information about campus and community resources and a person that students with concerns can talk to to get help. RAs also mediate between students, act as a liaison between students and the administration, organize dorm events and police the floor or hall, meaning they walk around and makes sure nothing illicit is going on.

Pros

“Being an RA was easily one of the best experiences of my life,” says Haley Cahill, a senior at Appalachian State University who was an RA her sophomore year. Haley loved the convenience of “living at work” and helping people her own age.

Cons

However, “I was constantly on the job and expected to handle any situation that arose,” Haley says.

Some schools require RAs to be on call for specific time periods, during which they must stay in the building and be ready to respond to any emergencies or problems. These could be in the middle of the night and/or the weekends, which could interfere with both your sleep schedule and your social life.

Also worth keeping in mind: Some RAs don’t receive an hourly wage. Instead, they get free housing and a meal plan. Depending on your needs, that can be a good or a bad thing!

Tips

For the collegiettes who can’t wait to start leading icebreakers, Haley has some suggestions.

“Be sure to express in your interviews and applications that you are organized and can multitask, work on a team, handle stressful situations and address and manage conflict,” she says. “Also, RAs do a lot of programming and events for their residents, so if you are creative or have prior experience planning educational events, be sure to tell your interviewer that.”

Applying to be an RA can be a very competitive process, so above all, express your enthusiasm and desire for the role!

2. For the Wordsmith: Peer Tutor at the Writing Center

Your friends constantly ask you to look over their essays, because you know the differences between a hyphen, an en-dash and an em-dash, and even your emails are perfectly crafted. Sound like you? Then consider getting paid for what you probably already do just to be nice—helping your fellow students with their writing!

Almost every college has a writing center where students can get one-on-one tutoring at no cost. In general, tutors help with idea development, organization and support as well as accurate source citation and overall clarity. However, they don’t write essays for students or edit by making in-text corrections, so don’t be worried about going from writing two papers a month for your own classes to 30 for your peers.

Pros

“I feel so fortunate that I get paid to talk about reading and writing, my two passions,” says Katherine Varga, a senior at the University of Rochester who works at her school’s writing center. “We get people from all disciplines, so I work with people writing about a wide variety of topics.”

Cons

Some schools require you get a recommendation from a faculty member or complete a seminar or course before you can become a tutor, making this job a little more difficult to obtain. In addition, helping people with their writing all day can be hard work!

Tips

If you apply, make sure to emphasize your strong English skills, patience, ability to communicate well and talent for constructive criticism.

3. For the “Most Spirited” Collegiette: Tour Guide

You know this is the job for you if the only thing second to your Beyoncé obsession is your obsession with your school. Bonus points for being outgoing, talkative and coordinated enough to walk backwards!

Pros

Even if you’re not a huge fan of giving speeches to a large audience, the tour life could still be awesome. “Working as a tour guide is not only easy money but also helps you with public speaking,” says Jordan Sypek, a University of Tampa senior. “Before I was a tour guide, I was a little shy and hated talking in front of a big group. Now I have no problem with it and feel comfortable talking to anyone, anywhere.”

Other perks: You get to learn fun facts about your school, walk quickly every day (hello, effortless cardio) and, maybe most importantly, help young adults make one of the most significant decisions of their lives—where to attend college!

Cons

It can be difficult to work a tour guide schedule into your existing one; after all, most tours take place during the morning and afternoon, when your classes happen.

Tips

When going for the gig, you should communicate your willingness to answer any and all questions (even the annoying ones like, “What was your SAT score?” and, “How likely is it that I’ll get in?”) as well as your enthusiastic nature. It’s also a good idea to brush up on your campus knowledge, such as important buildings, traditions, history, services and student life. If you get the job, you’ll go through training, but your interviewers will be impressed with your head start.

4. For the Social Butterfly: Food Server

There are some girls who are born to mingle and who have a smile and a nice comment for everyone they come across. Well, those skills are perfect for food-service jobs! After all, Hungover Grumpy Guy who just wants his bagel and caffeine? He definitely needs an upbeat person serving him his perfectly toasted bagel with cream cheese (and pumping an extra shot of expresso in his drink).

You can work at a coffee shop or small-scale on-campus restaurant, like a sandwich shop, or you can work in your school’s dining hall. While the first option may sound less stressful, don’t forget the long lines these places always have during rush hours. However, working in the cafeteria may require more menial work, like busing tables and washing dishes, as opposed to serving up food.

“I worked [at my school’s café] two nights a week: Tuesdays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m., which was the closing shift,” says Carina Corbin, a sophomore at Amherst College.

Pros

The job helped Carina make friends and become more popular on campus because she was always running into people or meeting new ones.

Sarah James, a sophomore at the University of Birmingham who works at her campus’s bar, also loves the social aspect of food-establishment jobs.

“The hours are flexible, and it’s a lot of fun working in a fast-paced environment with other students, especially when the vibe is good and the music is pumping,” Sarah says.

In addition, those who work in dining usually receive complimentary food—which is definitely a highlight, as long as you don’t overindulge! Guess there is such a thing as a free lunch.

Cons

Both Carina and Sarah mentioned drunk students as one of the downfalls of the job.

“Let's just say drunk people aren't very friendly when they are hungry,” Carina says. She also disliked how the smell of fast food would linger on her clothes. Yuck.

Tips

Employers look for high-energy people who are willing to literally get their hands dirty, so try to highlight those characteristics during the application process.

5. For the Chatterbox: Receptionist/Administrative Assistant

Your confident voice and approachable nature help you make friends while you’re using public transportation, and your family jokes that you only stop speaking when you fall asleep (and even then, you mumble in your sleep). Put your conversational skills to good use by becoming a receptionist/administrative assistant at an on-campus office!

Although they’ll vary depending on the office, the main duties of a receptionist are fairly simple: Answer phones, direct calls, greet and help visitors and perform clerical work, like filing and scheduling appointments.

Pros

Having a low-maintenance job can be relaxing. Plus, you can get tons of homework done while you’re in between answering questions and taking messages.

Cons

Being a receptionist can also be a bit tedious, and you’ll definitely have to deal with the occasional obnoxious caller.

Tips

When you interview, you should be outgoing, polite and professional, as those are ideal qualities in a receptionist. And don’t be afraid to apply to a department that has no connection with your major, career path or interests!

“I knew nothing about the department I worked in; It's more about where you're a good fit,” says Laura Fagen, a senior at the University of Kansas and a receptionist for the department of design and architecture. “When you apply, just remember to be friendly and open!”

6. For the Grading Guru: Teaching Assistant

You bleed red ink. You’re ready to spend even more time in the classroom than you already do. You’re super passionate about a particular subject or field. If these characteristics apply to you, definitely consider becoming a teaching assistant, or TA.

TAs traditionally grade papers, lead review sessions and hold office hours. If you’re a TA for a huge lecture, you’ll probably be the direct link between the students and the professor!

Pros

Not only will your salary be above average for an on-campus job but you’ll get to make an impact on the education of your fellow students.

“I love being able to share my excitement about a topic and seeing the students get the same passion for the material as I have!” says Maria Filsinger, a junior at Stanford who is a TA for an EMT class. “It’s amazing seeing how much the students grow throughout the year—the change in their knowledge and confidence from the first class to the last makes all the hard work of TAing worth it.”

Cons

Speaking of hard work, be prepared to put in a lot of hours! Maria said she dislikes the grunt work, such as grading quizzes, doing equipment checks, etc.

“I also dislike watching students struggle with the material after trying to teach it multiple times,” she says.

Tips

Make sure you know the requirements for the individual position before you go for the job—many TA roles require that you’re pursuing a graduate degree. (If that’s the case, you might get free tuition!)

Maria advises having a couple of solid references from professors, and if you’re thinking about TAing for a class in the future, definitely ace that class! You can also find open positions on your school’s job board or by emailing department chairs within your school and asking them if they know of any professors looking for a TA.

7. For the Busy Bee: Library Assistant

You think they should sell “Dusty Leather Books” as a Febreze scent. You’re always reading four or five books at once—and you have six more lined up on your bureau. Matilda was your favorite movie as a child (and, let’s face it, as a college student). If this applies to you, being a library assistant is a no-brainer.

So what will you be doing in the stacks? Typical responsibilities include monitoring the front desk, answering questions, checking books in and out, helping people find books, shelving books and answering the phone.

Pros

“I am a work-study student at my campus library, and I find it very convenient,” says Rachel Pasker, a senior at St. Ambrose University. “I can walk to work, leave early for class if I need to and come in for a few hours between classes.”

In addition, not only will you have lots of downtime for studying and doing homework, but you’ll be in the ideal environment for it: a quiet and relaxing library. You’ll also become familiar with all of the library’s great resources, many of which most students never discover in their four years. Best of all, how many times have you seen a belligerent customer in a library? People tend to be pretty respectful in the library—there must be something in the book-perfumed air that makes visitors more at ease.

Cons

If you’re looking for a fast-paced, dynamic job, you probably won’t find it at the library—although that’s not exactly a spoiler!

Tips

If you’re ready to hit the books, try to bring out your great customer service skills, attention to detail and “inside voice.”

By finding a job that fits your personality, you’ll get the best of both worlds: enjoying what you do and making some money at the same time. Count us in! Here’s to paying the bills (and maybe buying yourself some new shoes).

6 Steps for Totally Removing Period Stains

$

Girls, we've all experienced that feeling. You know the one I’m talking about. The one where you wake up and just know you’re sheets, pants and panties are ruined, or just the thousands of times you realize your underwear is probably a goner. It’s totally lame, but never fear because these six ways to get period stains out won’t let you down.

1. Never try to rub the stain out

Rubbing a stain does the opposite of getting it out, it rubs it in. Promise me and the gods of stain removal that you will not rub!

2. Act immediately

If you can act immediately, get the stained items in the washer. It’s amazing how well blood stains come out just from being washed immediately. When you wash, try to use some sort of really tough remover. Teen VoguerecommendsCarbona Stain Devils #4 ($4). Remember to wash on cold water too, because hot water can cause stains to set.

3. Try a little hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is great for treating whites with stains. The peroxide will lift the stain right out of the fabric.

4. Bleach is a great backup

If hydrogen peroxide doesn’t work, you can also use bleach for the white fabrics. Soak items in a mix of one part bleach to six parts water, but be very careful because bleach takes the color out of clothes!

 5. Use salt for colors

For colored items, it's best to try rubbing a salt water mix on the stain. You can literally use the salt from your kitchen! Mix one part salt and two parts cold water, then say goodbye to that unpleasant panty surprise.

6. Decide if it's okay to put the item in the dryer

After washing, check out your panties/sheets/pants before putting them in the dryer. If they look good, throw them in! If they need another wash or two, let them hang dry because the heat from the dryer may also set the stain.

Period stains can sometimes be tough to tackle, so don't worry if it doesn't come out on the first try. Hopefully you won't have to deal with this issue too often, but when you do, at least now you know how to live stain free!

Bill Hader's Anthony Scaramucci Impression Is Spot On

Former Saturday Night Live cast member Bill Hader has made America laugh once again. In the first of a four-episode Weekend Update: Summer Edition series, Hader returned to his roots and impersonatedAnthony Scaramucci, the former White House communications director whose wife recently filed for divorce. During his 11 days in the position, he missed the birth of their son and congratulated his wife via text message.

In the three-minute segment, Hader FaceTimed into the show simply because he heard his name. Hader opened the video chat with a grand introduction. “It’s me, Anthony Scaramucci. The Mooch!” he said. “When I hear my name three times, I appear like a goomba Beetlejuice.”

The scene certainly took a hilarious turn when Hader compared Scaramucci to cocaine. “You know how you miss me. I’m like human cocaine,” he said. “You gotta little bump of me, I made you feel excited, but I was out of your system too quick. And now that I’m gone you’re all depressed and edgy, and you’re trying to figure out how to score some more Scaramucci.”

I think Hader can add Scaramucci to his long list of other fantastic celebrity impressions, including Al Pacino, Charlie Sheen and Clint Eastwood. I’ve already set my DVR to tape next week’s episode.

College Party Wardrobe Essentials: Buy These Before School Starts!

This is it. This year will be your year. It’s finally the year that you can live young and wild and free. But with great freedom comes great responsibility; for every unforgettable Friday night when you’ll dance on tabletops, you’ll need an equally unforgettable outfit!

There are several wardrobe essentials that are a must to ensure that when you walk into the club or frat basement (let's be real), all eyes are on you and only you. Before you arrive on campus, make sure you have all the clothing basics you will need to feel fancy for your first nights out on the college party scene!

Black Basics

A Little Black Dress

Marilyn Monroe once said, “I don’t mind making jokes, but I don’t want to look like one.” If you’re worried you’ll wear the wrong outfit to a party and feel like you stick out like a sore thumb, look no further than a little black dress. An LBD is a classic party must-have because, for collegiettes, versatility is key. “The perfect little black dress can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion,” says Elora Clifford, a recent graduate of Boston University.

You want to find a dress that, given the right accessories, you can wear to multiple types of parties. Pick a style that compliments your figure—you should always feel your cutest in your LBD. Your perfect dress should show off a little skin, but not too much. Keep it plain and let the dress be something your accessories can play off of.

Forever 21 is a gold mine for LBDs; check out their Ribbed Crisscross Dress or their Twisted Cutout-Back Dress, each for $12.90. With the right purse and pair of heels, a black dress is the perfect look for almost any party. Once you've found your perfect LBD, check out HC’s 20 ways to wear a little black dress for some style inspiration.

A Black Skirt

Don’t be afraid to show off your legs! A black skirt has the potential to be one of your most-worn party staples. Although you might not want to wear your LBD every weekend, you can easily wear the same skirt over and over again as long as you match it with different tops, shoes and accessories. “You want clothes that are versatile so you can get the most use out of them,” says Cassie, a recent graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Tuck a cute tank into a high-waisted black miniskirt, and voilà—you have yourself an easy, stylish outfit. Elora says, “My go-to party outfit is usually a black skirt paired with a hot shirt, usually something with chiffon or lace with a bandeau underneath, and heels.”

You should look for a tight, above-the-knee skirt, but make sure it’s long enough that you’ll be able to comfortably dance or sit in it. Consider trying out this Bodycon Midi Skirt from Charlotte Russe.

For Under Your Clothes

Bralettes

Little girls wear neon Band-Aids. Party girls wear neon bralettes. A necessity for every collegiette’s wardrobe, a bralette can be worn under a shirt instead of a tank top when your outfit needs a little extra coverage. They’re perfect for parties where you'll be spending the night on the dance floor because you’ll be wearing less fabric, so you won’t get as hot. Try to buy a bralette or two that goes well with multiple items in your closet. “A black bralette is essential. You can wear it under almost anything,” Cassie says. You also may want to consider choosing a colored bralette to wear under a sheer top to add a bold accent to your outfit. Try Free People's Galloon Lace Racerback for $20. Not only does this bralette come in a ton of colors, but because it’s ruched, it will create the illusion of a bigger bust. If you’re looking for a bralette with an even more feminine flair, try this Lace Halter Bra from Urban Outfitters, on sale for $16 (marked down from the original price of $20).

Spandex Shorts

To avoid a wardrobe malfunction second only to Janet Jackson's, get a pair of spandex shorts to wear under short dresses and skirts. It’s vital to wear these when you’re going to be dancing, because there’s a good chance your skirt could fly up. You really don’t want to be known as that girl who accidentally flashed everyone at the party. Try these Stretch-Knit Bike Shorts from Forever21 for $8. You want to opt for a discreet color that will blend with what you are wearing, so it won’t be too noticeable if anyone gets a peek. Just remember to try your shorts on under one of your skirts or dresses first to make sure they lay flat and don’t create lines.

For Theme Parties

Costume Clothing

Wearing nothing but a sheet to a toga party is perfectly acceptable (and often encouraged), but most theme parties at college will actually require clothing (unless you’re headed to an ABC—anything but clothes—shindig). There are lots of items that you can wear to multiple types of theme parties. For example, you can wear the same cute green top for Saint Patrick’s Day, Mardi Gras, a stoplight party (a party where you wear green if you are single, yellow if your romantic situation is complicated, and red if you are taken), or a Christmas party. A button-down can be your go-to when dressing up as a nerd for a jocks vs. nerds party, or as business executive for a CEOs and office hoes party. “Some kind of animal print is always a must for a jungle party, or a costume party, if you can get a pair of ears,” says Cassie.

You also should bring old costumes you might have—you never know when they may match the theme of a party. See if you can borrow your brother's old sports jersey for sports-themed parties. Thinking ahead about items that you have at the back of your closet that could potentially be great for a themed party will help ensure that you won’t have to scramble to buy a last-minute outfit.

Elora advises to pack “items that can be worn for a theme but won't make you stick out like a sore thumb at a different party. You never know where the night will take you.” This is extremely important, because although you might start the night at a party with one theme, you may end up at a different party at the end of the night.

White Tees

White tees are so useful that having a few of these stashed in your drawers at all times is always a good idea. You can guarantee that you'll go to glow parties, where everyone will decorate each other’s shirts with highlighters, and paint parties, where everyone gets slathered in a mass of paint. At these types of parties, you don’t want to ruin any of your nice clothes. A simple white Hanes tee is easy on your wallet at the sale price of $5.99. They come in both crew neck and V-neck styles.

Keep in mind that you can easily cut a plain white shirt into a cute crop top. If you get really good at cutting your own shirts, try making the back into a cute bow style shirt. Plain tees are also perfect if you get invited to specific themed parties where you have nothing to wear, because you can create your own custom shirt for the night.

Accessories

A Cross-body Bag

If you don’t already have one, you should buy a cross-body bag. You don’t want to have to think about holding onto your purse, wristlet or wallet all night at a party. After all, you may end up putting your belongings down for a game of pong or flip cup and end up losing track of your stuff. Look for a small bag, since all you need for a night out is P-MILK: your phone, money, ID, license, and keys.

Macy’s has a variety of options that are sensible for a range of budgets. Try this Rebecca Minkoff Mini M.A.C. Crossbody for $88 (originally $175) or this French Connection crossbody for $49.97 (originally $98).

Fast Flats

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but fast flats ($7.95) are a party girl’s best friend. Fast flats—very thin flats that can roll up to easily fit into a purse—are so small that they don’t take up much room and are so light that they won’t weigh your bag down. Just throw a pair of these into your purse when you’re wearing a pair of heels so you have a backup option if your feet end up killing you later in the night or on your walk home.  Sometimes beauty is pain, but it doesn’t have to be when you’re going out!

A Cheap Jacket

At the end of the night, searching through a mountain of jackets can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack—finding yours will be downright impossible. Since there’s often not a good place to stash your jacket at a large party, it’s not unusual for everyone to throw their jacket in the same massive heap. Because of this, it’s possible someone may end up taking your jacket, either accidentally or on purpose. You don’t want to lose an expensive coat at a party, so you should have a cheap jacket or zip-up hoodie that you don’t care about that you can wear instead. Try this denim jacket from H&M for $9 (originally $29.95) or this cool Canvas Drawstring Parka from Forever 21—just $19.99, marked down from $29.90.

That way, you will be warm on your way to the party, but won’t really care if there is a mix-up and you lose track of it by the end of the night.

With a little advanced planning, you’ll always be prepared when you feel you gotta get down on Friday. Remember that parties are danger zones for expensive or easily stained materials, so when shopping for clothes that you’ll wear to parties, you probably don’t want to wear anything too expensive or sentimental. If you’re going to a party where there will be dancing, light colors that show sweat also aren’t the best idea since hundreds of people dancing in a basement can make the dance floor pretty hot and humid.

These essential items are vital to any party girl’s wardrobe. With the help of this guide, if you fall into your bed right after a party, you’ll never wake up in the morning feeling embarrassed—you’ll be well-dressed!
