5 Tips for Actually Making Friends in a New City

0

Moving to a new city stirs up all sorts of emotions at once; it's equally as exciting as it is scary. It's a chance for new opportunities, new experiences, new memories and also new friendships. Undoubtedly, making friends comes easier for some people. But for others, it can be hard to know exactly where to start—so we’ve got five tips for how to actually make new friends.

1. Take advantage of technology

We live in a technological world, where social media and apps open us up to endless possibilities and people. Search on Facebook for any events in your area—and actually go to them! Use Bumble BFF, a feature in the dating app Bumble, to find a friend, rather than a date. You'll have the opportunity to chat with friends you match with—and you have just 24 hours to start talking before the match disappears! You might just be surprised how cool the people you meet are, and if you're feeling shy (or weird about making friends online), remember that your potential BFF probably feels the same way, and is just as open to friendship as you are.

If you’re extroverted and don’t mind group activities, perhaps Meetup is the site (and app) for you. In it, you can organize groups and events for others to RSVP to, or join one that's already been planned. It’s fully intended for meeting people IRL, not so much on chatting prior to a meeting.

2. Join new programs

For Mara, University of Southern California class of 2014, the challenge was not moving to a new place but returning home after graduating college. She explains, “In many ways it felt like starting over in a new city, especially since most of my high school friends had moved away.”

Mara joined a program for new college grads in her company and was able to meet other people her age who had all just graduated college as well. Her advice, however, can be applied outside of the office.

Search for programs, classes and other fun activities your area provides and sign up! Your school's alumni network is a great place to start. Not only will your chances of meeting new people increase, but you’ll likely meet people who have the same interests you do.

3. Be open-minded

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let's move onto the tips that actually have to do with you.

Making new friends will be difficult if you don’t allow yourself to be completely open, out there and willing to engage with others. Oftentimes, you’ll be the one who has to take that first step and approach someone, but how?

Laura Sanchez, University of Puerto Rico class of 2015, says, "It's way easier said than done but really, you just need to do it. Inhale and exhale. Maybe the other person is just as nervous as you are about it! You'll never know how it turns out if you don't take a chance and put yourself out there."

If you shut yourself out, meeting new people will be incredibly difficult. Practice what Laura advises and go ahead, take a chance!

4. Realize that the fear is in your head

"A lot of the time we make up these extravagant scenarios of what will happen if we say hello to someone or ask for their name, that we talk ourselves out of doing it," writes Alexander Figueroa, from University of Sagrado Corazón class of 2014. He explains how he had to give himself pep talks as a freshman in college before approaching someone in class, something he says "may seem silly but it really helped me out. I had to get over myself and my fear, otherwise I wouldn't make any friends."

Your approach is not silly at all, Alexander! In fact, we completely agree. Sometimes the fear of possibly embarrassing ourselves stops us from doing something that can possibly change our lives. So try giving yourself that pep talk. Tell yourself you're amazing, that you're smart, wonderful and you deserve to make a genuine connection with other people. Once you get over that barrier, you'll be unstoppable!

Remember: sometimes we can be our own worst enemy.

5. Stay in touch

As adults, forming a connection with someone that goes beyond acquaintances can be hard. We’re each doing our own thing, making something of ourselves, so most of our friendships tend to be those we formed years ago, when we actually had time to hang out nearly every single day. But here you are, in a new city, exploring the area, putting yourself out there and getting to know new people… what comes next?

You make an effort to stay in touch.

Yeah, yeah. Effort. Ugh. But you have to do it. It’s the way friendships work! Maintaining a social life regardless of how busy you are is possible. Schedule lunch dates, brunches, plan ahead, add each other on social media—show your genuine interest and hopefully that person will do the same.

Being in a new place is challenging and there’s so much you still get to discover, but we know you can do it. Not everyone has the courage to pack up and start anew somewhere else, but you did it! So muster up that same courage, go explore your new home and get to know people. Who knows? Perhaps you’ll make friendships that will last you a lifetime.

6 Surefire Ways to Stand Out at Any Conference or Networking Event

This article has been syndicated to Her Campus from The Millennial Sprinkle, an InfluenceHer Collective Member. Read the full post here.

Here's the thing: attending conferences and networking events can be very intimidating, especially if you're a first-timer. But, that's totally normal!
I know from personal experience that these things can be a little anxiety-inducing. I mean, often times you don't know anyone and (let's face it), "selling" yourself to brands, companies, and even individuals with similar interests can be quite nervewracking.

"Pressure is a privilege."

As Serena Williams often quotes fellow-tennis champion Billie Jean King, "Pressure is a privilege." And it really is so true. Whether you are the most extroverted or the most introverted person in the world, there is one thing that will help to alleviate some of that pressure: preparation.
Here are 6 surefire ways to make sure you stand out at the next conference or networking event you attend:

1. Bring business cards

This is something I definitely learned the hard way, so please save yourself! The awkward "I actually forgot mine" excuse doesn't really hold up when someone asks you to give them your business card. If there is one thing you take from this post, let it be this: always go to conferences and networking events with a stack of business cards. Even if you don't use them, the small price to make them is far less costly than the embarrassment of realizing you are totally unprepared.

At a previous conference I attended, we were given the advice to not throw our cards around. While it's important to have business cards, you do not have to give one to every single person you meet. It's more valuable to begin developing a relationship than it is to simply hand out your card to everyone. Create relationships with people and give those you genuinely form a connection with your card. This lets them know you want to stay in touch.

Try VistaPrint, for example (starting at $9.99 you can get 500 business cards) or print your own and avoid waiting for shipment.

2. Prepare a 60-second elevator pitch

At the most recent conference I attended, I was actually able to sit down with a professional from .Me to create my perfect 60-second elevator pitch. The idea here is to practice telling someone all about you and "sell" yourself in just 1-minute. Not sure where to start? Try using these tips from Forbes (note: the same steps can be applied when forming a pitch for talking to brands or individuals with whom you hope to collaborate).

3. Know what makes you "you"

Ask yourself: How are you different from others in your field? How does your background or experiences make you special? Answer these questions and any other "stand out" ones, flaunt those differences, and show them why you are the best at what you do.

Katie Stevens Explains Why We Need a Show Like 'The Bold Type' Right Now

0
0

If you never watched a movie about a woman who worked at a magazine and wished you could be her…well, who hasn’t done that? These types of films dominated the 2000s; they’re part of the reason why I wanted to be a writer. But they’re not exactly realistic. In the years since I fell in love with this genre, magazine-set flicks have become harder and harder to find. Here to fill the void (in a much more realistic manner) is Freeform’s newest series, The Bold Type.

The Bold Type follows Jane (Katie Stevens), Kat (Aisha Dee) and Sutton (Meghann Fahy) as they navigate the world of Scarlet, a women’s magazine largely based on Cosmopolitan. Not only is this show great if you’ve been looking for employees of a fictional magazine to obsess over, but it’s also extremely timely, tackling women’s issues, politics and sex in a way that 2017 necessitates.

I had the pleasure of talking with star Katie Stevens about how the show portrays feminism, friendship, flings and more.

Can you tell us about your character, Jane?

Katie Stevens: Jane is a newly promoted writer at Scarlet. She’s dreamed of being at Scarlet her whole life. She used to eat up the magazine when she was little because it was the only kind of female energy that she could get in her life, so in a way, it was like her mother or her sister that she didn’t have. I think she’s very Type A. She sets a lot of high expectations for herself, and through the course of the show, you’re going to see her kind of have to come to terms with the fact that she’s not always going to live up to her own expectations and kind of having to let go of that perfectionism and really learn from her mistakes and draw strength from them just so that she can become better.

The Bold Type is obviously set in the magazine world. How does it differ from other shows and movies where the characters work at a magazine?

KS: Well, we’ve done a lot of research working with Joanna Coles and Holly Whidden from Hearst and Cosmopolitan, and we got to tour the Cosmo offices and I got to speak with a lot of the writers there and kind of get what their day-to-day is, what their experiences are, how often they get stories shut down, and really do our research so that we could make sure that this was an authentically made show.

And I think that a lot of the magazine things that you see—granted, like Devil Wears Prada came from somebody’s personal experience, but it was still very much in the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days [category], like all of these magazine movies that we’ve had that are so iconic but kind of put a little bit of a cliché on writing at a magazine. So hopefully what people see in our show is the ups and downs of working in the magazine industry and knowing that all of the storylines that we’ve done have come from an influence of being actual experiences that these writers and people who work at Cosmo have actually had.

So that was going to be my next question: what kind of research you did with Cosmo. But did you get to shadow any writers that write at women’s magazines before you started filming?

KS: I didn’t get to shadow. I mean, I did some work of like trying to sit down and write my own Cosmo-esque article and failed miserably. It’s very hard; I commend anybody in the media-writing world. It’s a very hard thing to do. And I find that when I was doing it, anything I wrote I was judging myself. And I was like, “Ugh, this is stupid.” So I really do commend anybody who is a writer.

But I did get to go to the offices and talk to writers, and they gave me their emails in case I had questions. But it’s funny because I was trying to tell them about storylines that the [Bold Type] writers had planned and they’re like, “Oh, yep. That’s something they asked us. That’s something that happened to me.” So it was cool because even though I went to Cosmo I think only twice, I really did get to talk to the writers and ask them questions.

And Holly Whidden and Joanna Coles have been so kind, and Holly has always been so open to allowing us to ask them questions. You know, she was talking about how real it is, like that boardroom scene where we’re talking about the article with the sex positions. Like, they really have to go up to like these old men in suits and present these storylines, and it is as awkward as it appears on our show.

The show also isn’t afraid to tackle politics and issues that affect women. Do you think that audiences are more receptive or eager for this type of show in the age of President Trump?

KS: I mean, I think that it’s great that the show is coming at the time that it is. You know, I’m always that person that I try to like shy away from talking about politics just because I never want people to feel like I’m pushing any sort of agenda out there or onto them. I never want to feel like I’m hammering someone over the head because they believe something different than I do. But I still do really feel that a show like this is necessary because we’re not bashing people over the head with it; we’re just kind of bringing these issues to light and allowing a conversation to be had. And I think that it’s a perfect time because I feel like women are being more outspoken and fighting for what they want and asking for what they want at younger and younger ages. And that’s exactly what these women are doing.

And you know, with the topic of feminism, I think feminism has such a stigma to it. People think that if you’re a feminist that you hate men, you know? And I think that’s so false because I think men are very much a part of the feminist movement. I mean, I did the Women’s March, and my boyfriend came and my friends and they had their boyfriends and their dads. And you know, so many men are a part of that and there are so many men who encourage the women in their lives. And I’m fortunate that that is the situation that I am in. I know that’s not everyone’s situation, but I am so fortunate that I have my dad and my brother and my uncles, my cousins, my boyfriend. Like, I have all of these men who encourage me to be an outspoken woman with an opinion that’s valued. And I think that that’s so much of what this show shows. It shows women who are empowered empowering other women to be better, and we have men on the show who empower women to be stronger and appreciate strong women. So I think hopefully we can remove the stigma away from feminism because I think everybody should be able to call themselves a feminist. Because feminism to me just means women being on an equal playing field as men.

You also don’t shy away from talking about sex on the show. Do you think it’s important to make sex of a less taboo topic for women to talk about, and how do you think The Bold Type is doing that?

KS: I think sex in our culture has always been perceived kind of like a weird subject and people get uncomfortable, and I just feel like that’s such learned behavior in our society even though it’s just something primal and something that’s just in our nature to have and do. And I think a lot of times in our society, you have shows [like] 16 and Pregnant that are showing the dangers and the scariness of sex. And I feel like it’s also important to show that you can have a healthy sexual life and it not be something that’s taboo or scary or uncomfortable. Because everyone does it, and I think it’s important to have a conversation and make people feel comfortable to talk about it.

I know growing up it was always seen as like this scary thing that we don’t talk about. Granted, now I can have a conversation with my mom about sex and it’s not weird. But I wish that I had that open forum when I was in high school and I had questions. So I think there will be some level of people that are shocked by the things that we deal with on our show in terms of sex and the things that we show, but I think that it’s healthy. I think some parents are going to be like, “You can’t watch that,” and kids are going to watch it anyway. And I hope that they watch it and they feel more comfortable to talk about it and feel more comfortable in their own skin when it comes to being sexual and discovering your sexual identity.

Moving on to the friendship aspect of the show, a lot of scenes between Jane, Kat and Sutton happen in Scarlet’s fashion closet. I’m wondering how we’ll see the girls’ friendship grow and develop outside of the fashion closet as the season goes on.

KS: A lot of what you see is us at work, but then you’ll have scenes like [in the second episode], they showed a scene where we’re all watching porn in Jane and Sutton’s apartment. So you’ll get scenes like that. But a lot of what happens this season, you know we deal with a lot of things in the workplace and we help each other through a lot of difficult things that happen. Sorry to be cryptic; don’t want to give anything away.

What I love about their friendship is there’s nothing that happens—I feel like a lot of female friendships on television they’re portrayed [like] they’re best friends but then somebody backstabs someone and then they’re in a fight and then they make up. I think we [portray] female friendship in the way that it truly is. Where it’s like if you have your best friends and you guys get into an argument, you get into an argument, you’re mad for five minutes, and then you’re like, “Hey, I’m sorry. I’m feeling like this and I really love you and I’m really sorry that happened.” And then you move forward.

That’s what I love about our show. There’s no backstabbing, there’s no crazy fights that we get into. We just encourage each other and try to make each other better. So I like that we’re reflecting that way. Because all of the female friendships I have in my real life are also supportive and wonderful. So I want to see more of that on television, so I’m happy to be on a show that’s showing that.

So I have to ask about Pinstripe Guy. Is he going to be a permanent fixture in Jane’s life, or is he just a fling? I’m hoping that he’s more than just a fling.

KS: He’s more than just a fling, but you’ll just have to see how it progresses because I think Jane has a perception of who he is. You know, she’s very Type A, she’s got to let go of a lot of these expectations and preconceived notions that she has about people, and he is one of those preconceived notions. So he’ll be around for a while.

And they couldn’t have picked a better actor. Dan Jeannotte is like the best human, and we’ve had to do some difficult scenes together but he’s always made me feel so safe and comfortable. He’s just a wonderful person, so I’m very thankful to have him as my opposite.

Melora Hardin’s Jacqueline is not the typical boss that we’ve seen depicted in these types of magazine workplace stories in the past because she’s actually supportive of Jane and her colleagues. Do you think this representation of a female boss and women helping women is more akin to real life?

KS: I’ve never worked in a workplace like that, so I can’t speak on that perspective, but I will say that all of the female mentors per se or adult figures that I’ve had in my life have always been very supportive. And I think that’s something that they’ve captured so beautifully about Joanna Coles is like Joanna Coles is very intimidating but she has this warmth and encouraging nature about her. And I think so often we’re so quick to see boss characters perceived on television that are bitchy and not supportive, so I think it’s important to show that your bosses are always going to be intimidating because they’re bosses and your future is kind of in their hands in a way. But I think it’s important to show that there are people that will encourage you and push you to be better through that intimidation. Rather than just being mean and just asking for things from you and threatening to fire you and the things that we’ve typically seen from other iconic boss characters. So hopefully this kind of changes that and switches that.

The Bold Type airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on Freeform.

Senate Republicans Are Struggling to Get the Votes They Need for Yet Another Version of Their Health Care Bill

0
0

Two Senate Republicans are continuing to voice their disproval of the Republican health care bill, making it unlikely that the bill, even with revisions, pass the Senate in its current state, The New York Timesreports. Today, senators are getting a first look at yet another version of the bill being released with the purpose of repealing many parts of Obama's Affordable Care Act.

The two senators who have spoken out about their views on the bill, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, have both said they do not support the bill. Paul says the bill leaves too much of Obama's bill in place, while Collins says the current bill plans to make too many cuts. If one more senator says they won't be voting for the bill, it won't pass the Senate, where it needs 50 votes of support. Republicans currently hold 52 seats in the Senate—only two Republicans can vote against the bill without destroying it, as Democrats unanimously oppose it.

Sen. Paul told the Times that the current revised version of the bill is even worse than the original because it gives more subsidies to insurance companies and doesn't cut taxes from the Affordable Care Act enough. He claims this doesn't really repeal Obamacare the way the Republican party promised it would.

On the other hand, Sen. Collins disagrees with the revised bill because of the large cuts to Medicaid, saying firmly, "If the Medicaid cuts remain the same in the new version of the Senate bill, I will vote no on the motion to proceed."

The different criticisms coming from Sen. Paul and Sen. Collins show the challenge for Republicans—creating an agreement between moderate and conservative Republicans on different parts of the bill. Super conservative Republicans want the bill to totally repeal Obamacare, including parts of it that most of the country loves, like rules against discrimination for preexisting conditions. But moderate Republicans know much of Obamacare has made things better for their constituents, so they don't want to fully repeal it, especially without a good replacement plan.

In the updated version of the bill being unveiled today, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is hoping to unite his party, Business Insider reports. Some of the changes include providing tax credits to help people pay for their plans, and keeping in place some of the taxes on the wealthy that help pay for Obamacare.

The bill was supposed to be voted on in June, but the lack of consensus among Republicans caused McConnell to push back the vote. He's now aiming to hold the vote next week, but it seems many Republicans still aren't showing signs of support for the bill. In the meantime, the Associated Press reports that President Trump has warned the Senate that if the bill isn't passed soon, he "will be very angry about it, and a lot of people will be very upset.”

While this newest version of the bill seems like a compromise, it may not be enough to get the support it needs.

An Education Department Official Has Apologized For Making 'Flippant' Remarks About Campus Sexual Assault

0
0

The U.S. Education Department's civil rights chief, Candice Jackson, has apologized for the "flippant" comments she made on college sexual assault, according to the Associated Press.

In an interview on Wednesday with The New York Times, Jackson was highly critical of the Obama administration's handling of sexual assault, which she believes was not “fairly balanced between the victim and the the accused student.” She then went on to say that 90 percent of the allegations “fall into the category of 'we were both drunk.'" Where she got this statistic is unclear, but this highly controversial statement garnered so much criticism that she issued an apology.

Jackson was hired by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, who herself has been under fire for scaling back campus rape investigations, according to HuffPost. The scaling back came after a suggestion from Jackson that it was necessary clear a backlog of complaints, which skyrocketed under Obama. Not only has the Trump administration fired over 40 people from the investigation staff, Jackson has also decided to hide the list of schools who have been discovered to be mishandling sexual assault cases.

This directly contradicts Jackson’s apology, since she said told the Associated Press that as a victim of sexual assault herself, she would never wish to diminish anyone's experiences. She added "All sexual harassment and sexual assault must be taken seriously—which has always been my position and will always be the position of this department."

This rhetoric is somewhat surprising given her actions during the recent 2016 presidential campaign—in a Facebook post, she notably called Trump's sexual assault victims "fake victims" doing it for no other reason than “political gain."

Despite the controversies surrounding both DeVos and Jackson, it appears that there will still be a rollback of federal funding for sexual assault allegations, as DeVos has meetings set up to discuss this possibility over the coming days. This undoing is catastrophic for those who have spent the last few years trying to combat a systematic system of "rape culture."

Jackson's comments smack of victim blaming and the trivialization of rape. Hearing something like this from a government official seems to continue the culture of locker room banter and the "boys will be boys!" mentality that allowed Brock Turner to serve only half of his prison sentence.

Actions speak louder than words, and we can only hope that Candice Jackson follows her apology with efforts to make college campuses safer for all.

Glossier Will Soon Be Available Internationally...Kind Of

Despite the oh-so-chic French name, Glossier has always been an American company through and through. After all, you could only buy its cult-favorite products in the US—until now. To the relief and excitement of its international fanbase, Glossier has just made the life-changing announcement that it will be expanding its borders. "Glossier Goes International," exclaimed the headline on their latest blog post, and soon Canada, the United Kingdom and France will be able to buy Glossier products without scouring eBay or taking a cross-Atlantic flight. While Glossier's expansion won't technically be happening everywhere, it's still a big step for the brand and it's promising for more expansion in the future.

Canada's launch is only less than a month away! Since one of the country's primary languages is French, Glossier has to create an entirely new website to make sure their customers can read the product descriptions. They promise it "will be up and running as soon as we can get all the right accent marks in all the right places." Next is the UK, homeland of their COO, Henry Davis, and their Creative Director, Helen Steed. Finally, there's France in 2018. Merci beaucoup.

Glossier's products have become iconic in recent years (YouTube is full of tutorials and reviews), and we can't wait for their Boy Brow and Cloud Paint to be available worldwide. Emily Weiss, Glossier's Founder and CEO, hints that might be a reality sooner than we think. "We’re working our hardest to make Glossier global," she wrote in the announcement. Until then, we'll just be celebrating this first expansion.

Blake Lively's Next Role Is Playing an Assassin, & I'm All About It

Blake Lively is a true inspiration. From being totally honest about her body confidence to clapping back when reporters ask her unfair questions, she’s definitely one to look up to. Now we have even more reason to admire Blake thanks to her newest role. According to Cosmopolitan, the actress will next play an assassin, which we all aspire to, right?

In the upcoming film The Rhythm Section, Blake will play Stephanie Patrick, who loses her family in an intentional plane crash. To seek revenge, Stephanie decides to become an assassin. So, I’m totally expecting some kickass, girl power action.

Based on a four-book series by Mark Burnell, The Rhythm Section will be in the hands of Reed Morano, who's directed episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale. Varietyreports that the film will begin production in the fall.

I never thought the world needed an assassin film with Blake Lively at the helm, but I’m not complaining about this casting. Seeing as there are so many books about this character, we may just have a new hit franchise on our hands.

People Are Pissed At Kim Kardashian Because Of North West's Latest Outfit

Kim Kardashian and North West are known as one of Hollywood's best-dressed mother-daughter duos, but it seems like North's recent style has landed her mom in hot water—and Kim is having none of it.

The five-year-old was spotted in NYC wearing a silky orange dress with what looked like an embroidered corset. Twitter was up in arms over the paparazzi shots, and Life & Style Magazine even claimed Kim Kardashian had designed the garment herself. (She did not.) This didn't stop anyone from criticizing North's outfit though.

Kim fired back at the haters with a tweet of her own.

"I would never put my daughter in a corset!" Kim wrote, attaching a video to show how the "corset" was just a piece of cloth sewn to the front of the dress. "It's a dress I bought that is a cotton fabric that laces up & looks like a corset! Just decoration."

Historically, corsets have been used to help women try to attain a specific waist size or body shape, even to the detriment of their health. (Remember Elizabeth Swann fainting because of hers in Pirates of the Carribean?) However, the style is now one of 2017's hottest trends, and honestly the faux-corset of North's dress is clearly loose and comfortable.

Some on social media pointed this out with the tweet equivalent of an eyeroll.

Amen.

Lea Michele Shared a Sweet Tribute to Cory Monteith on the Anniversary of His Death

July 13 marks the four-year anniversary of Glee star Cory Monteith’s sudden death, and his costar and girlfriend at the time of his passing, Lea Michele, chose to honor the date in a sweet and simple way, Refinery29 reports.

In an emotional tweet, Lea shared a photo of herself wearing Cory’s Glee character’s red letterman jacket while holding an old snapshot of the couple. “Hard to believe it’s been 4 years,” Lea wrote. “We miss you C… love you more.”

This isn't the first time Lea has addressed missing Cory. She, along with several Glee cast members, shared intimate memories of Cory on this date last year, using the popular hashtag #ThreeYearsWithoutCory. Now, fans are responding to Lea's latest tweet with #FourYearsWithoutCory and their own happy memories of Cory on Glee

Props to Lea for always putting on a brave face when it comes to Cory's death and being so honest about her feelings. If you want to contribute to this heartfelt tribute to Cory, send out some love using #FourYearsWithoutCory.

The Lesbian Attraction in Selena Gomez's 'Bad Liar' Video Was Her Idea & Now I Love It Even More

If you already liked Selena Gomez's latest hit, "Bad Liar," you're about to love it—and her—even more! The video totally exceeded my expectations because Sel incorporated so many unique elements, including playing all four main characters. Impressive much? Well, it gets even better. The love triangle between the high school girl, her father and her female gym coach added some much-needed representation of the LGBTQ+ community within the music industry, and the best part is Selena came up with the idea herself, HelloGiggles reports.

The video's director, Jesse Peretz, was totally on board with the idea. In fact, Peretz said it made him want to work on the project even more. "She brought on this idea that somewhere within this love triangle is lesbian attraction. It just gave me another reason to do it—acknowledging that it’s not just heterosexuals in the world," he told Billboard.

With Selena's insistence, the video added another layer to an already complex storyline. Within the short span of the song, there's probably at least one part you can relate to, whether it's being a high school student with a crush, having an uncomfortable parental relationship, feeling an attraction toward the same sex or just having a solo bedroom dance session. So impressed by you, Selena.

What to Know Before Getting Your Nipples Pierced

0
0

Nipple piercings are all the rage right now thanks to trendy celebs like Kendall Jenner, Rihanna and Bella Hadid who rock their metal-studded nipples in all kinds of ultra-scandalous clothing. While not all of us can walk around in a mesh top the way these ladies often do, we can still jump on the bandwagon and pierce our nipples–which makes us just as cool, right? Before you run out to the nearest piercing shop, it's important to really understand what you're getting yourself into. With these 10 pieces of info, you'll be set to grab your keys and take the plunge!

1. It's going to hurt, but it'll be brief

As with any piercing, there is going to be a significant amount of pain involved. Just thinking about having a large needle piercing through my nipples is enough for me not to go through with it, but according to those who have been bold enough to follow through, it's actually not a horrible experience! Kendall Jenner even says it's not as bad as people hype it to be–if she can do it, so can you. Depending on your pain tolerance, you'll either feel a slight pinch or feel extremely uncomfortable, but either way, it will only be brief. Expect the the site to be tender for a few days, but the real pain will only last during the actual piercing process.

2. You won't want to wear a bra for a few days

As mentioned above, you'll probably be pretty sore for a few days after the initial piercing. Many opt to go sans-bra to avoid having anything pressed against the fresh piercings. However, if you do this, you'll want to be sure you're wearing a soft, clean shirt that won't snag the piercing at all. And after they do begin healing, you'll definitely want to be wearing a clean bra each day to avoid irritating them further.

3. You won't be able to change the jewelry yourself

Finding cute bars and hoops to take the place of the traditional starter jewelry will be exciting, but be aware you most likely won't be able to change the jewelry yourself. This piercing is unlike what goes on in your ear or belly button–it usually requires a professional's help to swiftly change out this piece of body jewelry. Even if you think you can try doing it on your own, it's best not to attempt it and risk having the holes close or even rip because of your lack of experience. Plus, it sounds a whole lot less painful to just have a professional quickly swap in the jewelry instead.

4. The healing process takes about a year

The healing process for this piercing will be quite long, typically taking about nine months to one year to heal completely. As a general warning, you'll most likely bleed for the first week or so, and you should expect to have some of that crusty goo surrounding the jewelry (it's totally normal). As with all piercings, cleaning the site will be extremely important. The professional piercing you will help you set up a cleaning regime, but it typically involves some sort of salt water or saline solution one to three times per day. It's quite the commitment, so definitely consider this before committing.

5. Sometimes your body can actually reject them

The biggest risk associated with getting your nipples pierced is if your body starts rejecting them, aka pushing the jewelry out of your body. Yes, it is as painful as it sounds. Luckily, this doesn't happen often and there are clearly warning signs to catch it early enough. Sometimes the only solution is to remove the jewelry altogether, which is a real bummer since you just went through the entire piercing process.

6. The jewelry will snag...a lot

When I asked my friend about her experience with them, she advised to never, under any circumstances, brush your hair naked because you'll be in excrutiating pain if you accidentally grab onto the bar. Ouch. The same holds true for drying yourself off with a towel too fast, or wearing a sweater with small holes without also wearing a bra. Basically, you'll just need to be cautious AF with anything that comes near your nipples.

7. Speaking of jewelry, the type of metal is important

The type of metal ring or bar you'll be pierced with can vary based on your price range. If you stick with the classic stainless steel, make sure it's of medical grade or implant grade in order to avoid any allergic reactions caused by cheap metals–these are often present in jewelry purchased from overseas. More expensive options include gold, silver or platinum, but who really has money that in their budgets? Just avoid buying cheap metal for the safety of your nipples, please!

8. Your nipples will be way more sensitive

Unfortunately, this can mean so many different things for different people. Some say they have heightened sensitivity in the sense that their sexual arousal and satisfaction is increased due to the piercings, while others remain so sensitive that they don't allow their partners to ever touch them. Some people even say their nipples remain hard all the time, while others say that's a total myth. While it's tough to say how things will turn out for you, it's important to discuss all of the potential outcomes with your piercing professional, your partner and yourself to see if you're willing to accept all of the possible results.

9. You'll still be able to breastfeed

One of the most common misconceptions is that getting a nipple piercing will affect your ability to breastfeed afterward. Luckily, this typically isn't the case. Elite Dailyreports the common breastfeeding functions of the breasts can only be affected through the actual piercing experience itself, so as long as your professional knows what he or she is doing, you're in the clear! They also suggest either removing the jewelry six months into the pregnancy for sensitivity issues, or replacing the standard bar with a longer one or even just a retainer. A major tip is to try to plan out the timing of your piercing to ensure that your nipples have plenty of time to heal before potentially breastfeeding–an estimated 18-24 months in advance, if possible.

10. Beware: it can close fast

One of the saddest things about piercings is their ability to close right back up. Nipple piercings tend to close faster than most piercings, which means you only have a few minutes to leave them jewelry-free before the holes start slowly shrinking. The only positive side to this point is if you decide your nipple piercing days are over, because you'll be able to close those babies up with minimal scarring in no time at all.

Nipple piercings definitely aren't for everyone, but there's no denying their trendiness lately. If you're considering taking the plunge, I'd suggest doing your research and ensuring you really want to commit to the process!

The Mask You Should Add to Your Skin Care Routine, Based on Your Skin Type

0
0

After a hectic day, there’s nothing as rejuvenating and refreshing as a good face mask. They leave you feeling fresh and radiant. But in addition to making you feel great, face masks also have different purposes depending on their ingredients. By pairing the right mask to your skin type, you’re not only going to be relaxing but also actively and effectively treating your skin.

Oily skin

The absolute best thing for oily skin is a clay mask of some sort. Esthetician Jordana Mattioli says, "Clays are generally great for oily skin, but with the right addition of other ingredients."

In Origins’ Active Charcoal Mask ($26) the active ingredient is a type of clay called kaolin clay which gets rid of toxins. Mattioli tells us, "kaolin clay mildly exfoliates, is gentle, and great for sensitive skin." Plus the addition of charcoal in the mask will draw out whatever is clogging the pores while the clay cleanses it away.

Dull skin

Sometimes, especially as we get older, skin can feel like it’s lacking natural radiance or it can start to feel rough. This is caused by low oil production and exfoliation of skin cells which in turn causes a dull look. A brightening mask is great for dull skin. It brings color and brightness to the surface to go from dull to glowy. Lexi Hill, a senior at the University of South Carolina, says, “my other favorite is [a brightening mask] by Karuna ($8). [It’s] really good to smooth lines and for a more refreshed/glow after or exfoliating.”

Dry skin

With summertime comes dry skin, and the ultimate way to combat it is with plenty of hydration, for yourself and your skin. A hydrating mask with essential oils, purifying waters or some sort of ingredient that will nourish the skin will be best. Rachna Shah, a freshman at Dartmouth University, says, “My skin’s generally dry – a little bit oily on occasion, especially if it’s humid – and I use a British Rose plumping mask ($28) from The Body Shop.” This Dr. Jart+ ($6) mask is also great for hydrating and repairing your skin; it uses algae extract to leave your skin feeling replenished.

Tired skin

Sometimes skin gets worn out or looser (especially as we get older), whether it’s from the sun or pollution, our skin takes the blow. A smoothing or refining mask will perk and tighten it up, bringing back some definition to the face.

Lexi says, “My other favorite is…Peter Thomas Roth Gold Mask ($42). [It’s] great for smoothing and refining.” This mask also comes in a sheet version ($12)! Sheet masks will lock in moisture a bit better than a “wash-off” mask will and for us lazy girls, tend to be less work to apply and take off. Mattioli says, "in a face mask, since it's left on a short amount of time, you are most likely getting a calming anti-inflammatory effect. Gold is a mineral which can have anti-aging, and skin brightening properties when found as an ingredient in a well-formulated product."

Irritated skin

When skin gets irritated, whether sunburnt, broken out, or just experiencing redness, it needs to be calmed down with a soothing mask. A perfect soothing mask will have tea tree oil or cucumber. Mattioli explains that "cucumbers contain vitamin c and silica, so it functions as an antioxidant, but it's soothing anti-inflammatory properties come from its the polysaccharides which attracts and keeps moisture in...tea tree oil is a soothing antioxidant with antibacterial and astringent properties which makes it feel cooling. It's a great ingredient for acne, but also can be helpful for nail fungal conditions and even athletes foot." These are definitely key ingredients. The Body Shop slays the face mask game with their Tea Tree Skin Clearing Clay Mask ($17), which helps to calm your skin and eliminate redness.

All skin types

There are some masks that don’t necessarily target something specific but are just overall good for your skin! If you’re not sure what your skin type is start with one of these to see what it brings out in your skin.

A good ingredient to look for is honey. Mattioli says, "Honey has so many beneficial properties as a potent antioxidant and antibacterial ingredient which is why its found in products meant to soothe or heal wounds. It is rich with enzymes, amino acids, proteins, and vitamins- which makes it great for all skin types and beneficial in any type of face or product." She recommends this Honey Potion mask from Farmacy ($56). For something extremely hydrating and fun to use, the bubble mask ($14) trend!

Of course, everyone’s skin is different and one mask may not agree with you so always be careful when trying new face masks. Go ahead and reveal that gorgeous skin!

This Is Why I'm No Longer Going to Fake My Orgasms

The opinions expressed in this article are the author's own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.

By Adrianna Michell

The first time I faked an orgasm, I didn’t even mean to do it. It just slipped out in the same way I had slipped into my partner’s bed: by accident and fuelled by unfortunate self-loathing. My fake orgasm started with moans that didn’t reflect pleasure I actually felt. My "climax" ended in conversations of, “Was it good for you?” and “Did you finish?” to which I responded, “Yes.”

Every time I had sex with this partner, it was uncomfortable and I let out a few half-committed sighs to tell them I was ready to finish up the sexual encounter. I lied and I did it with one bra strap already on, so I could flee out of the bedroom as quickly as possible.

I normalized my lies. I told myself that this is just what girls are supposed to do. Sex isn’t supposed to be pleasurable early on. I positioned myself in a way that hid my body and reflected what I thought sex was supposed to be: missionary. All the sexual imagery I had seen—pictures, movies and music videos—showed me this single way of having sex, so I normalized that, too. I insisted upon it, and I was left unsatisfied.

Eventually, I realized that faking my orgasm wasn’t just a result of uncomfortable sex with an incompatible partner (although that definitely was a part of it). I had rationalized somewhere inside my brain that I didn’t need to be satisfied sexually. I put the needs of another person before my own because I didn’t think I was deserving—I thought this man was more entitled to receiving sexual pleasure than I was. After speaking to female-identifying friends, I noticed that at least within my group, women were positioned as givers and men as receivers.

I didn’t want to receive head. I didn’t want a face in between the thighs that I felt so much shame for. I didn’t want anyone to be so close to me, to have that much power over me. It was simultaneously a way of maintaining some sort of control, and a way of punishing myself and denying myself pleasure. The self-loathing I had grown up with manifested itself in rejecting both my body as something that should be admired, and my pleasure as something that should be valued.

So now, I’m making a pledge to no longer fake my orgasms. I mean, I was never really good at it anyway. So I’m letting go of the comfort blanket of conformity. I’m recognizing the different images, iterations and identities that sex can be made up of.

From now on, if I am going to have sex with someone, I will allow myself to be satisfied. I won’t be complicit in my own dissatisfaction. I will satisfy and be satisfied, and fuck until I am sweaty and content. No more fake moans. I promise, from here on out, I won’t “fake it ‘til I make it.” Instead, I’ll make it happen. I won’t have sex with a person if I don’t trust them or feel self-conscious.

The point is, I worked toward being comfortable enough with my body and my sexuality that I came to a place where I could demand that I orgasm. I spoke to friends that I trusted and had similar experiences to. I had frank discussions with myself and realized I needed to get an orgasm (and hey, I masturbated a little, too). From now on, it’s orgasm or bust, I pinkie promise.

Corinne Olympios Will Appear on the 'Bachelor in Paradise' Reunion Special

The premiere of Bachelor in Paradise Season 4 is still a month away, but the drama surrounding this season never seems to stop. Earlier this week, DeMario Jackson announced he would attend The Bachelorette’s Men Tell All special and a BiP reunion, despite being one of the cast members tied to BiP’s alleged sexual misconduct. The other cast member involved in the scandal, Corinne Olympios, has now confirmed that she will also appear at the BiP reunion special, Cosmopolitan reports.

“I am very happy to be appearing on the Bachelor in Paradise special,” Corinne said in a statement. After an investigation concluded that no sexual misconduct occurred on set and filming resumed, Corinne declined the offer to return to the show.

Seeing as she turned down the chance to be a full cast member again, it’s a little surprising that Corinne will join the reunion. While speaking to E! News, a source close to Corinne said, “She’s excited to finally come out and speak. They invited her to appear on the reunion and she wants to go. It’s not a contractual thing. She’s still close with her Bachelor family. She’s looking forward to being back.”

The source also claims that there’s “no bad blood” between Corinne and the BiP crew and that “it’s not a big deal” for her to see DeMario again. We’ll have to wait and see if these reports are true.

Forget the rest of the cast appearing on BiP this year—I’m tuning in just to see the action between Corinne and DeMario plays out.

15 Times the Tanner Sisters From 'Full House' Were You & Your Sisters

No matter how old I get, part of me always wishes I could spend a day in the life of the Tanner family on Full House. My jealousy of their awesome San Francisco house has never died down, and I may secretly want to raid the girls’ closets for their ‘90s fashion.

However, looking at the show from an older perspective totally reveals that the three Tanner sisters are basically every trio of sisters ever. DJ, Stephanie and Michelle are perfect examples of how your sisters can be both your best friends and worst enemies—and how your lives just wouldn't be the same without them. Below are 15 Tanner sister moments that could easily be straight out of you and your sisters' own memories.

1. When DJ and Stephanie enlist Michelle to cover up for them

Life lesson: Always send the cutest, youngest sister to distract the parents when you’ve done something bad, like accidentally punching a hole through your dad’s bedroom wall.

2. When DJ and Stephanie first share a room

If you have multiple sisters, you probably had to share a room at some point. While there were definitely moments when you wanted to kill each other, it still felt weird when one of you moved out and the other sister’s snores were no more.

3. When Steph becomes obsessed with copying DJ and Michelle follows suit

Your mom definitely loves those baby pictures of you all in matching outfits.

4. When Stephanie's totally feeling that middle child syndrome

The middle girl of three sisters is totally the loudmouth of the group and isn’t afraid to call attention to herself.

5. When Stephanie and Michelle tag along on DJ’s first date with Steve

What are little sisters for, if not to tread on your high school love life a little bit? Granted, DJ was babysitting when the chance to go out with Steve came up, but all big sisters can relate to towing along little sisters when you want to hang out with a boy.

6. When Stephanie is cast in a commercial DJ auditioned for

For the Tanners, it was a cereal commercial, but for most of us, it’s a stolen shirt or broken curling iron that sets off some of our biggest sister feuds.

7. When Stephanie just can’t deal with Michelle on their Disney World vacation

The happiest place on Earth can be a little miserable if you’re stuck with your little sister the whole time. Since we don’t all have Tanner-style vacations, it’s likely sharing a hotel bed or ~that~ annoying road trip that makes us want to kill our sisters when we’re traveling with them.

8. But their resolution reminds you of how fun a sister vacay can be

Your little sister asking you to be a Disney princess with her is the ultimate sibling goal.

9. When DJ and Stephanie argue over who Tommy Page likes more

Whether it was a celebrity or the guy next door, you and your sister had some kind of feud over boys. Although, whatever boy you fought over definitely wasn't around for long!

10. When Steph tries to prove that Steve is cheating on DJ

Your sisters can be your most loyal friends, and if they’re getting bad vibes about someone in your life, you better believe they’re going to make sure you’re okay. Luckily for the Tanners, Steve’s mystery girl turned out to be his cousin, so Stephanie’s well-meaning investigation was only a funny mix-up.

11. When Michelle develops a tap-dancing habit, much to Stephanie’s dismay

Sisterhood isn’t all hair braiding and cute TBT pics. More often than not, one sister has an annoying little quirk or phase that drives another sister absolutely bananas.

12. When the older girls convince Michelle she’s sick so she doesn’t go to a concert with them

If one sister is considerably younger than the others, then the older sisters are totally going to get some special privileges, like going to see your fave band before the baby of the family can go.

13. When DJ and Stephanie are being lazy together

Sisters who binge-watch together stay together.

14. When DJ intervenes in Stephanie’s plans to go joyriding

Being a teenager is tough, and sometimes you can’t confide in a parent when certain things come up. DJ stepped in when Stephanie put herself in danger by joyriding and prevented her from making a huge mistake.

15. When the girls prove that everything is better when you’re with your sisters

What would life be like without them at your side?

Trump Told France's First Lady That She's in Good Shape & It Was Awkward AF

0

President Donald Trump’s treatment of women is always a fierce topic of discussion, and his latest snafu was when he tweeted a personal insult about MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski. But now he’s getting attention for making a remark of the opposite nature to the First Lady of France, The New York Times says.

While in France for an official visit, Trump and his wife Melania met with French president Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte for a tour of Paris’ Hôtel National des Invalides. The couples were standing together when Trump told First Lady Macron, “You’re in such good shape.”

Um, what?

Just when you thought the moment couldn't get any weirder, Trump then immediately turned to President Macron and said, “She’s in such good physical shape.”

Understandably so, Macron's wife looked like she wanted to keep her distance after hearing his comments, keeping Melania in between her and Trump.

The awkward encounter was captured thanks to a live stream that President Macron’s official Facebook account was running in honor of the Trumps' visit. The remark adds to the long list of President Trump’s inappropriate comments about women, most recently including Brzezinski and Irish journalist Caitriona Perry

It's also not the first uncomfortable exchange between the American and French leaders. When he met Trump earlier this year, Macron made it clear that their intense handshake upon meeting "wasn't innocent."

The Trumps are in France for the president to find political "common ground" with Macron.

Zendaya & Her 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Costar Tom Holland Are (Probably) Dating

Who else is a sucker for a costar romance? I love seeing actors fall in love after working together on a movie, and according to PEOPLE, Zendaya and her Spider-Man: Homecoming costar Tom Holland are reportedly dating after playing friends in the new superhero flick.

“They started seeing each other while they were filming Spider-Man,” a source told PEOPLE. “They’ve been super careful to keep it private and out of the public eye but they’ve gone on vacations with each other and try and spend as much time as possible with one another.”

Earlier this month, new Spider-Man Holland discussed how his friendship with Zendaya has helped him cope with fame. “She’s so great and amazing,” he told PEOPLE. “Zendaya is super famous and she’s been through this and I just call her up and say, ‘How do I manage being famous?’ I’m very glad I have a friend like her.”

Although the relationship has basically been confirmed, both Zendaya and Holland poked fun at dating rumors on Twitter, joking about sources claiming they had vacationed together.

15 Places to Go This Summer Instead of The Beach

0
0

Summertime is synonymous with beach time to most people. This is even more true when you are living on the coast or anywhere else with easy accessibility to the beach. While the appeal of spending day after day doing nothing but sunbathing and flirting with good-looking lifeguards is totally understandable, there are a ton of other ways to spend your precious and limited free time this summer. For those who cringe at the idea of spending the summer covered in itchy sand and living in constant fear of an unbearable sunburn, take a look at this list. You’ll find some much more exciting things you can do this summer instead of becoming a semi-professional beach bum.

1. Travel

Whether you have the opportunity to study abroad in some exotic place or just take a road trip with your friends to go camping a couple hours outside of town, traveling is traveling. It's always exciting to visit somewhere new and experience new things and new cultures. If you have the means to do so, get a one-way ticket to another country and explore until there is nothing left to find. If money is a little tight, take a weekend road trip to a nearby town you’ve never been to and pitch a tent with your best friends. You’ll create memories that will last a lifetime and get a breath of fresh air from your usual routine.

2. Concerts

There are so many amazing music festivals and summer concert tours going on during the sweltering months of summer. Get crappy seats that cost $20 for a band you’ve never heard of or front row seats for your favorite singer. Either way, you’ll end up having a great time.

3. Amusement parks

Most cities are within an hour or two of an enthralling and fun-filled amusement park. While the cost of a ticket can sometimes be a little steep, a lot of parks have deals for in-state residents or large groups of people. Do some research and find out what kind of opportunities are available to you.

4. Museums

Wherever you live, chances are there is a decent museum somewhere around you that you can easily get to. If you live in or near a major city, this is an even better idea. If you’ve never taken the time to visit the local art or history museums in your area, now is your chance!

5. Work

Getting a job has its obvious perks—sweet, sweet cash flow and something to occupy you every day. Apply for jobs at local restaurants, ice cream shops or stores, and see what happens. Worst case scenario, you hate your job but go back to school with a huge wad of cash to spend at happy hour.

A lot of internships are unpaid, but the experience that you will gain is payment enough. For all of the Type A planners out there, it is never too early to get a foothold on the professional world and start training for you future career.

6. The gym

Let’s be real here, all of those pizza binges during the school year didn’t help your figure very much, and you probably didn’t have a ton of time to spend at the gym. It’s okay—it’s college and we’re all busy. Now that it's summer, you have enough free time to work out whenever you want. Whether you join a gym or sweat it out in your living room, now is a great time to get active and get in shape.

7. Volunteer

No matter where you volunteer, the feeling that you get from doing so is unlike any other. Being able to improve your community or help a person in need is one of the best things that you can do with your free time.

There are a ton of ways to get involved in volunteering. If you are a serious do-gooder, check with your school about service trips that are going on this summer. You could help people across the world. If you’d rather just get your toes wet when it comes to service, consider visiting your local animal shelters, nursing homes, preschools or any other service opportunities that bring a sparkle to your eye.

8. Your favorite reading spot

One of our favorite things to do over the summer is read, read, read. During the school year, most students don’t have a lot of time on their hands to read for pleasure, and if you're anything like us, you have a number of books on your to-read list. Summer is the perfect time to kick back and make a dent in your reading bucket list.

9. Have your friends come to you

Everyone has a stash of barely used board games buried somewhere in their house. Have a nostalgia night and invite over all of your friends to play a board game that no one has thought about in years. You might be in your twenties, but you are never too old for a full-fledged Uno battle.

10. Visit your school friends

Being home from college for the summer can be strange. You go from spending 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with your best friends to spending three full months without seeing each other’s faces outside of FaceTime. If you have friends from school that live within a few hours of you, go visit them or have them visit you. If they live a little bit too far to drive, scour the Internet for cheap plane tickets and make a week of it. Let’s be real—three months is way too long to go without your school family.

11. On a picnic

Find a picturesque park, a large wicker basket and a plaid tablecloth, and you are good to go. Picnics are an iconic summertime activity for a reason, so why not join in on the fun? Get some fresh air, bask in the sunlight and enjoy some delicious homemade sandwiches and lemonade with your closest friends.

12. The lake

If you aren't the biggest fan of the beach scene, maybe a lake trip is more your speed. Lakes offer a wealth of opportunities when it comes to entertainment. Boating, tubing or just floating around are some of lake-goers' favorite pastimes.

13. Brunch

Millennials are literally obsessed with brunch. Without the worries of an impending paper deadline or upcoming physiology exam, you can don your cutest sundress, grab your pancake-loving friends and enjoy your bottomless mimosas in peace.

14. Stay in

So maybe this isn’t the most productive use of your time, but at least you will finally be able to join in on conversations about House of Cards or Orange is the New Black without looking like a fool.

15. Your bed

College is hard and time-consuming, and if you want to succeed academically and still have some fun, chances are you spent the past nine months doing just about anything but sleeping. Don’t feel bad about sleeping for sixteen hours straight or spending a day doing nothing but lounging around—you deserve a break.

Forget the beach; there are so many other places you can go this summer!
