Trump's Friend Says the President Might Fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller

Rumors that President Donald Trump is considering firing special counsel Robert Mueller began to circulate when a friend of Trump, Christopher Ruddy, CEO of Newsmax Media, said during an interview with PBS NewsHour, “I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel. I think he's weighing that option.” When Ruddy discussed the topic with CNN's Chris Cuomo on "New Day" Tuesday, Ruddy added, “Chris, remember there is no evidence of wrongdoing, there's no evidence of collusion, there's no evidence of obstruction,” CNN reports.

According to NBC News, Mueller was appointed by the Justice Department’s Acting Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to investigate the Trump campaign’s involvement with Russia.

After the rumor quickly spread, Representative Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, took to Twitter, writing, “If President fired Bob Mueller, Congress would immediately re-establish independent counsel and appoint Bob Mueller. Don't waste our time."

Rep. Schiff later told CNN’s Anderson Cooper, “You have to hope that common sense would prevail," Schiff said. "But it wouldn't surprise me at all, even though it would be absolutely astonishing were [Trump] to entertain this. The echoes of Watergate are getting louder and louder.”

Trump could follow the example of former President Richard Nixon, who fired the special prosecutor investigating the Watergate scandal in 1973. And we know how that turned out for Nixon—he eventually had to resign.

When Speaker of the House Paul Ryan was asked about Trump’s consideration of firing Mueller, Ryan said that he would be "surprised" if Trump fired him, CNN reports. “I think he should let Bob Mueller do his job, do his job independently, and do his job quickly, because I think that that's what he would want to have happen,” Ryan said on the conservative radio program “The Hugh Hewitt Show.”

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, in regards to the rumors, said, “Mr. Ruddy never spoke to the President regarding this issue. With respect to this subject, only the President or his attorneys are authorized to comment,” CNN reports.

Ruddy disputed Spicer’s comments Tuesday in a comment to CNN, “Spicer issued a bizarre late night press release that a) doesn't deny my claim the President is considering firing Mueller and b) says I didn't speak to the President about the matter — when I never claimed to have done so. Memo to Sean: focus your efforts on exposing the flim-flam Russian allegations against [the president] and highlighting his remarkable achievements! Don't waste time trying to undermine one of your few allies.”

Considering that Trump’s behavior is usually unpredictable, these rumors may end up not turning out to be true. Either way, as NBC News reports, it’s worth noting that only the attorney general—Acting Attorney General Rod Rosenstein—can actually fire Mueller. And right now, Rosenstein says that Mueller will have full independence to conduct his investigation.

When it comes to beauty, I doubt there's anything Kylie Jenner hasn’t tried. From her ever-growing makeup brand that has branched out from her famous lip kits to highlighters, face palettes, eyeshadow palettes and blushes, the youngest Jenner has proven time and time again that she knows her stuff. Aside from makeup, Kylie is known for her fast-changing always-on-point hair that always leaves people guessing whether she’s sporting a wig, or actually made the dramatic plunge into a new style.

Last night, hairstylist Jonathan Colombini, who has worked with celebrities like Ariel Winter, Kendall Jenner, Kandee Johnson and Laura Prepon, revealed his latest work on the young makeup mogul.

In a heavily filtered mirror selfie, Kylie can be seen rocking a new ‘do of a short, chin-length bob and blunt bangs in a color that appears to be close to her natural jet-black one. The transformation is dramatic to say the least. While the haircut looks real, with Colombini’s expertise and Kylie’s wig-wearing history, one can never be too sure. If it is real, I envy her short locks. With this intense summer heat, this short style is a cool way to keep, well, cool.

Envious of Kylie’s hair, but not ready to take the drastic cut? Check out this YouTube tutorial on how to turn your long hair into a bob—no scissors needed.

A U.S. College Student Has Been Released From North Korean Captivity in a Coma

A University of Virginia student who was detained in North Korea after traveling there as a tourist is being sent back to the U.S. today, CNN reports. But the reason he's being released isn't good—he was medically evacuated because he's been in a coma for more than a year.

Warmbier went to North Korea last year with Young Pioneer Tours, a travel group with the motto "Tours to places your mother wants you to stay away from." During his stay with several other Americans, Warmbier took down a pro-North Korean sign from a hallway that, according to The Washington Post, was staff-only. The New York Times reported that he stole the poster to exchange it for a car once he returned to the U.S.

Three days later, when leaving Pyongyang International Airport, Warmbier was arrested for his “hostile acts” and was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor, the Times reported. The U.S. State Department and Humans Rights Watch quickly called for his release, and #FreeOtto stormed social media, but little was done, despite his confession two months later. It was allegedly only shortly after this confession that Warmbier contracted botulism, a potentially fatal disease, and fell into a coma after being given a sleeping pill.

#FreeOtto resurfaced this past May, when Warmbier would have graduated from the University of Virginia. Warmbier's parents said in a statement that they only learned a week ago that their son has been in a coma for over year.

Warmbier's release was announced shortly after NBA star Dennis Rodman arrived in North Korea as part of his frequent “basketball diplomacy” missions to the country.

In an interview with CNN, Rodman said that he planned to “bring sports [there]” and was not intending to make a political statement, and U.S. national security spokesperson Michael Anton also denied the connection between Rodman's visit to North Korea and Warmbier's release.

There Might Be a Continuity Error in the 'Orange Is the New Black' Season 5 Finale

The below contains spoilers about Season 5 of Orange Is the New Black.

The recently released fifth season of Orange Is the New Black might include a continuity error, and it's confusing AF.

To recap: Season 5 of OITNB took place over the course of a three-day prison riot. The season finale saw the end of the riot when an emergency response team entered the prison and forced all of the inmates to evacuate. After the team did a head count, the guards said 10 inmates were missing. Caputo then realized the 10 missing inmates were hiding in the pool, and he was right: 10 inmates were found there.

However, loyal OITNB fans noticed there were actually two additional missing inmates who were not among the 10 found in the pool. These two characters are Pennsatucky and Chang, who had already escaped. So the head count should've come up with 12 missing inmates, right?

Well, making matters even more complicated, Refinery29 pointed out that Linda, a Management and Correction Corporation employee, was included in the head count, so the final number of missing inmates should've been 11—not 10.

What the heck is going on? Why did the guard incorrectly state that they were "10 short"? Was this a mistake, or does Netflix have something sneaky in store for us? Guess we'll have to wait for Season 6 to find out.

How To Argue Effectively With Your Parents

$
0
0

When it comes to learning how to persuade our parents, we all started somewhere.

As a young, ebullient child, you probably begged your parents for a puppy. They may or may not have obliged, depending on your mastery of the puppy dog eyes tactic. As you found yourself approaching the tumultuous stage of adolescence, you probably begged them to buy you a cell phone, with your main plan of attack as the phrase, “but everyone at school has one,” hoping it would evoke pity.

And now here you are, slowly blossoming (maybe not so eagerly) into young adulthood. With this new phase comes new responsibilities and expectations, including more mature methods on how to approach your parents with a disagreement, how to ask for them something you want and how to show that you’re capable of handling what you’re asking for.

No worries, though – we’ve got you covered. Here are some pro tips on how to have a tough talk with your parents:

1. Decide if the argument is worth having

Pick your battles wisely and make sure the tough conversation would be worth it in the long-run. Avoid bringing up a topic if you feel that its result won't have a worthwhile positive effect on your future or you would be perfectly happy if the argument didn't happen in the first place. Ask yourself, “Do I truly feel in my gut that I need to bring this up? If I achieve what I want through this conversation, will I feel better than I do currently?”

Dr. Tim Jordan, a developmental and behavioral pediatrician, reminds you to consider how your parents would react to your topic when deciding whether to bring something up. “Sometimes parents just can’t understand certain things. They come from a different generation and the way they were brought up may have been different.”

But have no fear – there is a way to break down your parents’ walls. “If you’re open to your parents’ differing opinions, and you show respect for them, listen and mirror them (step into their shoes and repeat to them verbally that you understand their perspective), you can dissipate their resistance,” Dr. Jordan says. “When people feel heard, they’re more willing to listen. And when people feel understood, they’re more willing to try and understand the other side.”

2. Set an intention before you start the conversation

Before diving right into a confrontation, take a few moments to contemplate what you actually want to get out of the conversation. In other words, define what you want and clarify it in simple terms. If it’s permission to travel with your friends this summer, then go into the conversation with only that on your mind. Don’t bring up other problems that are totally unrelated to the topic or unresolved problems from the past, like how they were overprotective in high school or how they never bought you that new car. Unrelated issues will only distract from what you want and from your whole goal in the first place.

Additionally, set an intentional energy to start the conversation with. Do you plan on oozing negative, belligerent energy and an “I’m going to get my way” attitude? That may not be the best plan to get what you want. Instead, go in with positive, calm energy and an attitude of “I want to talk this out with you guys and see if you might agree.”

Lastly, consider the right time and place for the conversation. “The best time is when both sides are calm and not stressed. Don’t expect to have successful tough conversation right when your parents are walking in from work,” Dr. Jordan says. “Also, make sure neither of you is distracted. Make an agreement about putting your phones down or turning them off. Cut off distractions so both sides are present.” In following these guidelines, you’ll increase the chances of your parents approaching the conversation with openness and positive energy.

3. Have a conversation, not an argument

Ineffective arguments involve two people with opposing viewpoints bashing heads and ending at a standstill where neither person actually heard the other one out at all. No one walks away feeling like they learned anything or made a change in the other person. However, in a conversation, two people start with an open mind and willingness to listen and respond maturely. By acting as a qualified equal with your parents, they will gain respect for you, which ultimately means getting closer to your goal.

So how do you avoid an argument? “When you propose something to your parents, stay really calm and just listen. If they have concerns, let them explain and then use mirroring. Say to them, ‘It sounds like you’re worried about me doing this because (reason). Did I get that right?’” Dr. Jordan says. “When you do this, you’re showing your parents that you want to get in their shoes, see their point of view and take their concerns seriously.” When you show that you’re taking them seriously, they will take you seriously in return.

And feel free to do some research beforehand so that you come into the conversation knowledgeable about what you’re discussing and not just fueled with emotion. “If you can fully address your parents concerns with some research, there’s no reason for them to resist,” Dr. Jordan says.

But what do you do if your parents shut you down right away? “Think about why they might be doing this. Is it because they’re crabby? Did you come across as disrespectful or pushy or close-minded? Check in on both sides,” advises Dr. Tim Jordan. “This would be another time to use mirroring and show your parents that you want to understand them. Be sincerely curious and don’t roll your eyes. They will put their defenses down when they feel understood.”

Related: 5 Conversations You’re Avoiding (But Need to Have)

4. Use positive language

Rather than accusing your parents or telling them what they’re not, rephrase and use positive language. For example, you might have the urge to say, “You never let me do anything!” or “You never agree with me!” Rather than making these accusatory statements that only add more fuel to the fire, say something like, “I want you to hear me out. I know that this isn’t immediately something you’re jumping for joy about, but your support is important to me.” Be direct about what your parents can do for you, and phrase it in a way that acknowledges your parents’ capability of lending support.

5. Avoid a power struggle

Your parents may not be accustomed yet to your transition from child to adult, and they might still try to play the “We are your parents. Therefore, we make the rules” card. If you play off this power struggle, the conversation will turn towards a “who has authority” theme and completely detract from both sides hearing each other out.

Instead, refuse to fight fire with fire – it will only take you backwards. If your parents are adamant that they will have the last word and make the final decision, don’t throw a fit. Veronica Nunez, a recent graduate of Florida Atlantic University, reminds you to keep your cool. “Parents are overprotective because they love you,” she says. “You have to keep calm and talk to them with patience and honesty.”

Rather than trying to fight it, use their decision as an opportunity to show how much you’ve grown up. Don’t whine or beg, but be articulate in why you truly think you should get your way. Use logical arguments and (subtle) appeals to emotion. Never regress to acting like a child, which will only reinforce that you can’t handle the conflict maturely and won’t be able to handle the outcome.

6. Show empathy and an open mind

When having a discussion with conflicting sides, you’ll only continue to bash heads until you can acknowledge each other’s points of view. To get in this mindset, have empathy for your parents. Rather than shutting down points they make, interrupting, talking over them or tuning them out, really listen to them and ask questions to learn more about their point of view. The more questions you ask, the less assumptions you’ll make; and in turn, the conversation will remain clear and open.

Jennifer Wu, a recent graduate of University of Florida, reminds you to respect your parents’ opinion. “Always let your parents finish speaking because they don’t like it when you interject,” she says. “Remember that they want what’s best for you and are actually on your side even when it seems like they aren’t.” Have the humility to show your parents you care about their point of view, and they will do the same for you.

Having an effective confrontation takes two to tango, so your parents would hopefully be following these tips as well. If you follow all these steps and still come out unsuccessful, know that you did your best, and some things just aren’t going to come easy. That’s life, and it would be quite boring if we always got what we wanted immediately! Just continue to be persistent and you might just get what you want in the end.

Everything might not end up exactly as you want, but it always ends up exactly how it should be.

Studying Abroad in Paris: The Her Campus Guide

Studying abroad in Paris? Get a crash course in how to make the most of time in The City of Lights with Her Campus’ Abroad Guide. We spoke to collegiettes who studied in the French city, and they shared their tips on everything from getting around to staying safe to enhancing your time in this new city!

What must you see while you’re living in Paris?

Champs-Élysées and The Eiffel Towerare great for first-time Paris visitors!” While there are “dozens if not hundreds of museums in Paris,” one collegiette calls out “Musee D'Orsay.” As far as the many cathedrals to check out, “Sainte-Chapelle is my absolute favorite.” Learn about the “fascinating fact the city of Paris is built on hundreds of thousands of bones” at the Catacombs. For stunning views, “Sacré-Cœur has a great view and it’s really beautiful.” And for a relaxing afternoon, “the Luxembourg Garden is beautiful.”

What tourist sites are skippable?

The Louvre isn’t necessarily to be skipped, but remember “they have amazing pieces from a wide range of time periods; don't be that tourist who asks where the Impressionism and modern art are.” Notre Dame is “impressionably huge but there are other cathedrals that are quite pretty as well, and less busy.” Collegiettes note that “Champs-Élysées is too crowded and expensive. I wouldn't spend too much time there.” And a good tip no matter what city you’re in during your time abroad: “Don't go to cafes near the tourist traps; they won't be as delicious or cheap as cafes in the residential areas.”

Where can I get souvenirs?

“You'll find a lot of places on Rue de Rivoli near the Louvre” and also Rue de la Huchette near Notre Dame.”

Best places to buy clothes?

“Rue de Rivoli or Boulevard Haussmann, definitely visit BHV.”

What’s the best way to get around?

While “the Paris Metro is invaluable,” most areas are “very walkable as well.” And walking has it’s benefits: “Take the Metro if it's a long distance, but explore the city on foot as well when you arrive at the general area you want to explore.”

Where should I go with my parents?

Do a Seine dinner cruise! You get a beautiful view and great food.” Take them for a delicious dessert at “Angelina, on Rue de Rivoli. They're famous for their hot chocolate and the decor is really beautiful.”

Any great dinner recommendations?

Les Deux Magots or Café de Flore, are two of the most well-known restaurants in Paris and worth a splurge!”

What about where I can get authentic French food?

Le Clos Bourguignon for typical French food and Clichy's Tavern for mussels and fries.”

When should I go for an authentic night on the town?

In general, “the Latin Quarter and Bastille have a lot of good bars.” Les Enfants Rouges“has fondue and serves wine in baby bottles! It's a unique experience.”

What are must-eat and must-drink items in Paris?

“Try the bone marrow! (Sounds weird, but it's so tasty!)” Also in the same ilk, “make sure you try escargot.” And don’t let a fear of carbs keep you from “indulging in the bread. You'll be ruined when you come back to America after tasting the baguettes, croissants and pastries.” Also make sure to “try as many different types of pastries and crepes. Mussels and fries are also a personal favorite.” As far as drinks, “wine is super cheap and mostly local so try as many different types. Kir is a drink specific to France that is also good.”

I want to make the most of my time in Paris, what should I do?

Foodies should “take a cooking class.” Everyone looking should act like a Parisian and “go for a stroll in the parks.” Plus, “take advantage of the numerous art and music festivals that go on. There is also a Museum Night that occurs in which all museums are free at night.”

Where do Americans go out?

Bastille and Republique both have many popular bars,” but “Café Oz” is particularly popular among Americans.

What are good grab-and-go spots?

While “you can't go wrong with a baguette or crêpe from any café,” Pomme de Pain got a special shout-out.

Any great day trips in the area?

Fontainebleau is like Versailles, but smaller and less populated.” Go about an hour away to see “basically any castle.” And “Giverny (Claude Monet's garden) and Disneyland Paris” are both worth visiting.

How will my phone work?!

Make sure your phone is unlocked and get a preloaded SIM card, or get a cheap phone at a cell phone provider shop (such as Orange) that comes with a SIM card.” “Free is the cheapest, then SFR, and Orange is the most expensive. In general phone plans are cheaper than in America.” However, “a lot of places have wifi, so you can iMessage and Facebook message. I got an international pay-as-you-go phone in case of emergencies, and a lot of my friends did as well. Then we could keep in contact even without wifi.”

What can I not forget to pack?

Collegiettes called out plug adaptors, a journal, an umbrella and raincoat.

Any tips on staying safe?

“Always be aware of your surroundings. Keep your purse zipped closed and always on your body, never leave it on the back of your chair. Paris is full of pick-pockets.”

Any tips on the abroad programs?

"I would recommend UA in France and EF Paris but not EF St. Raphael because it was so party-oriented rather than school-oriented. EF Paris I got to live in one of the greatest cities in the world and get college credit for attending classes. UA in France was great because I got direct credit from my college and it was led by a professor at my university.”

“Look into programs that your university offers! Affiliate programs will take you wherever you want to go for whatever purpose, but programs through your university are easier to get credit for and help you make connections at your college.”

“I would recommend International Studies Abroad (ISA) / American Business School Paris. It helped me create lifelong friends and unforgettable memories. Also, they provide many excursions around France, so you can see the whole country rather than just Paris. The advisors are friendly and helpful, and there was a great support system while abroad.”

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott Now Have Matching Tattoos

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott just took their relationship to next-level seriousness: according to their Snapchats, the couple now has, albeit teeny, matching ink.

Us Weekly reports that Monday night, the couple took to Snapchat to show off their new tattoos, which both feature tiny, minimalist butterflies on the backs of their ankles - Kylie's right and Travis's left.

This isn't the first time the couple has seemed to use the butterfly as a symbol for their relationship either. Fans think Scott's song "Butterfly Effect" was written with Kylie in mind, and he's even previously posted an Instagram of her with the lyrics as a caption. They've also both seemed to get plenty of use out of the butterfly emoji lately.

Kylie and Travis have been inseperable ever since they were first spotted together at Coachella in April, but this is definitely a major step for their relationship, meaning things could be more serious than we thought.

16 Things Busy Girls Want You to Know

$

It's pretty easy for a college student's schedule to become overloaded with school, work, internships and a variety of other responsibilities that life decides to throw our way. Chances are, you either know a busy girl or you are the busy girl. Usually lacking in time, sleep and energy, busy girls know just how real the struggle to stay afloat really is. These are 16 things busy girls want you to know, and pay attention because we won't have time to repeat ourselves.

1. Sleep is the most precious thing to us

It doesn't come around often, so when it does, we take full advantage of it.

2. Four hours of sleep is pretty normal for us

This is why the power nap exists.

3. We feel like we're constantly doing a million things for other people

As a result, the things we want to do usually end up on the back-burner.

4. We multitask like it's our job

Because it kind of is. There's no way we'd get half of our daily tasks completed without splitting our attention in different directions.

5. Working lunches are a regular occurrence in our daily lives

Who has time for just lunch when there are so many other things waiting for our attention?

6. We've actually accidentally forgotten to eat lunch on more than one occasion

Unfortunately, food isn't always our first priority.

7. When people ask what our secret is, we whisper "caffeine"

And lots of it.

8. We're always behind on the latest television shows

Hey, at least we're consistent. That counts for something, right?

9. Slow walkers are the bane of our existence

Can't you walk and talk at the same time? I can't afford to have you slow down in front of me.

10. We're always down for grabbing a drink at the end of the day

Provided we've marked it on our schedules, of course.

11. Planning ahead is everything

If an errand isn't in our planner, it's not happening.

12. Exhaustion is not a temporary state of mind but a permanent state of being

At this rate, we'll be forever exhausted.

13. We carry on anyway because we know that our contributions are valued

Even if they aren't always appreciated by others, we know better than anyone else how important they are.

14. Free time is like a unicorn

Nice in theory, but it doesn't exist.

15. We have a hard time relaxing on the rare occasion when we do have free time

It's a total shock to the system.

16. When we aren't busy, we feel uncomfortably unproductive

Busy guilt is very real. Being constantly on the move is in our nature, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Senator Kamala Harris Getting Cut Off by Her Male Colleagues Will Infuriate You

Much like any other woman who has ever been interrupted by a man while trying to vocalize her thoughts and ideas, badass California senator Kamala Harris was not here for it when she was cut off by her male colleagues while trying to question Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

CNN reports that during Sessions's intelligence committee on Tuesday, Harris questioned him about his repeated refusal to answer questions about his conversations with Donald Trump. When Sessions said there was a policy in place that allowed him to do so, Harris asked him if it was in writing somewhere, to which the Attorney General shadily answered, "I think so."

Despite the fact that Harris's question was um, extremely vaild, and Sessions continued to avoid her line of questioning about the "policy," she was interrupted by Senators John McCain of Arizona and Richard Burr of North Carolina.

"Chairman, the witness should be allowed to answer the question,” McCain said, to which Burr responded, "Senators will allow the chairs to control the hearing. Senator Harris, let him answer."

Being Kamala Harris, she wasn't about to just sit back after being interrupted for asking a question that pointed out exactly how absurd the Attorney General's refusal to answer questions was. She later responded with a series of tweets about the exchange.

Unfortunately, Harris's experience is relatable AF for any woman who's been in a similar situation - but luckily, she's clearly not backing down.

Hanna and Caleb got engaged in last week’s episode and even had a mock wedding ceremony in a tent. But Caleb nudged Hanna to make it official when he brought her to a justice of the peace. With Ashley in tow, the couple finally said “I do.”

But where was Hanna’s squad? Well, if you thought the other Liars would be Hanna’s bridesmaids, think again. Because her besties were a little too busy getting busy to attend the ceremony.

Aria decided to spill her guts to Ezra, not only about the police report A.D. had been holding over her (the one she wrote about Ezra after finding out about his book but never filed), but also about every nasty thing she’s done lately. Before she could admit all her misdeeds, though, Aria, afraid that Ezra would leave once he knew the truth, kissed him passionately, and it only got more intense from there.

Meanwhile, Alison took Emily out to the kissing rock, where she’d set up a romantic picnic, blankets and candles. And they made the most of their last chance at freedom, if you know what I mean.

And guess what? Toby’s back in town! He was supposedly called back by Tanner on police business or something, but we all know he really returned to get it on with Spencer. And that’s exactly what he did. Toby invited Spencer to the cabin he’d been staying in, and when she showed up there, they reminisced about the last kiss they shared and how nice it was. Spence essentially jumped his bones, and I was loving it but also thinking the whole time, “Wait, is that Twincer?”

There are only two episodes of PLL left. It seems like this episode locked in all the show’s major ships, but you never know what could happen. It is Pretty Little Liars, after all.

How to Fully Embrace College If You Loved High School & Are Afraid to Move On

There’s no doubt that high school is a big moment in our lives. For most of us, we see high school as the triumphant ending to all the years that were spent in elementary and middle school. We’re finally the “big dogs” in our town, and being in high school, we’re that much closer to becoming an adult. It may seem like you have finally found your perfect group of friends and flawless study techniques, and you may even finally feel like you’ve gotten the hang of this whole “life” thing.

However, high school must eventually come to an end. With college around the corner, there’s bound to be some concerns. We know, it’s scary to think that you’ll have to break away from the comfort of your high school life, but you may just find that college is even better. If you’re anything like us, you loved every moment of being in high school and may even feel like you don’t ever want to leave, but we assure you, new things are not always bad. Here are some tips on how to hit the ground running when it comes to college:

1. Search for new clubs and organizations

Looking into organizations offered at your future college is a great way to get excited about your new college life. Not only do clubs and organizations offer amazing experiences, but they’re undoubtedly one of the best ways to meet new people.

You’ll soon realize that the closest friendships come from the organizations you join. We all know how daunting the thought of having to make new friends may be, but researching some new organizations can get you excited to meet new people with similar interests. In college, you’ll find that the opportunities are endless, and from sororities to beekeeping societies to rock climbing teams, there’s something for everybody.

“I talked to my future roommate, looked into new opportunities at my school, and just trusted I would make the best of what was to come,” says Autumn Dube, a recent graduate from Emmanuel College.  “I think it's important to keep an open mind no matter what new adventures you take on.”

We couldn’t agree more. Having a positive mindset coming into college is one of the most important things to having an amazing experience, even if the college you chose was not your first choice . It’s absolutely true that you get what you put into your experience.

2. Plan out your perfect dorm room

One of the most exciting things about college is that you finally get to live on your own or with a roommate. Either way, you finally get to have a place to call your own free from the reins of your parents. With all the stress that comes with leaving high school behind, making plans for the perfect dorm room or apartment is a great way to get excited for your new life away from home.

“I think that by the time you reach high school, you feel like you’ve finally got it all figured out. says Julia Le, a junior at the University of Texas at Dallas. “Then you have to go your separate ways to college and you feel like you’re kind of thrown into the world. However, one thing I was really excited about was being able to decorate my own dorm room. At home, my room was still filled with decorations from my childhood so I was super excited to have a fresh canvas.”

No matter what you decide to do with your new living space, make sure to keep in mind that this is the place that you’ll be spending for the school year. This living space should be somewhere you’d be exciting to come back home to. Also, it should be a great reflection of who you are and what you like. Just remember that college is a fresh new start, so when decorating, don’t be afraid to be your completely goofy self.

3. Take some time to reflect

Lastly, it’s always important to just spend some quality time with yourself. Take this time to reflect on what you loved so much about high school and what your goals are for college. Ask yourself what made high school so amazing and how you could transform those experiences into college experiences.

“In high school my life revolved around cross country and track,” says Molly Crum, a recent James Madison University graduate. “I found it important in college to find a balance- I joined the club cross country team to continue doing something I loved, but also joined other organizations that I never explored in high school. I think it's important to not try to re-create your high school experience exactly and be open to unique things your college offers.”

You don’t always have to leave the things you love behind. Of course, we don’t want you to try to recreate the high school experience; this is a whole new chapter. However, if you loved your friends in high school, get excited about meeting new friends. If you loved the high school football games, find organizations dedicated to hyping up school spirit. There are always ways to experience the things you’ve loved in high school in new and enriching ways.

It was the chapter of our lives that held the awkward transformation into adulthood. It was a time that held great memories and the place where we seemed to learn the most, not only about school, but also about ourselves.

It’s important to realize that this is just one chapter of our lives. The future holds so many more life-changing experiences that will impact us in more ways than we can imagine. Keeping a positive mindset is almost always the cure to facing the world head on. Don't worry, if we can do it, there’s no doubt you will be able to as well. We’re all cheering for you!

How to Make Your Mani Last Through Summer

To us collegiettes, there are few things more irritating than chipped nail polish. It always seems like right after we paint our nails, the color immediately starts flaking away, and this struggle is only heightened during the summer. From days at the beach to swimming in pools, it seems like the last thing polish wants to do is stay on your nails. With the help of celebrity nail stylist Whitney Gibson, HC is here to take you through the steps to ensure a long-lasting manicure.

1. Clean your nail beds

The first step to giving yourself a great manicure is to make sure your nails are as clean as possible. According to Gibson, it’s important to remove all the oil and residue from your nails because “oil will cause your polish to streak and chip.” The oil and residue can come from things like natural body oils, oils from creams and moisturizers and remnants of old polish. A simple rinse in the sink isn’t going to cut it!

To really clean your nails, Gibson suggests using a nail cleanser like Sephora’s Formula X Nail Cleanser ($10.50). Just lightly swipe the cleanser onto your nails and it will quickly evaporate, leaving the nails clean and dry. Use this after you’ve removed all your previous polish to really clean your nails.

2. Always use a base coat

Applying a base coat is an essential step because it both protects your nails from the nail polish and helps the polish last longer. “Base coats have special formulas that adhere the polish to them and can prolong your manicure by days,” Gibson says.

Sephora’s Formula X line also carries a superb base coat ($10.50).

3. Apply multiple thin coats of polish

After the base coat dries, apply two thin coats of the polish color of your choice. Thin coats mean less drying time between coats, and they’ll help avoid the dreaded nail polish bubbles that appear if you apply another coat before the first one dries.

“You want to do thin coats because they will dry more evenly and have more flexibility, which will help with chipping,” Gibson says. Make sure to apply polish evenly so there’s no clumping.

4. Reapply topcoat every three days

Perhaps the most important step to a long-lasting manicure is the final step, the topcoat. “The topcoat is your nails’ last line of defense and will really protect the nails from the tiny hairline cracks that lead to chips,” Gibson says.

Gibson suggests applying a thin layer of topcoat every three days or so to keep your nails looking like new.

Sephora’s Formula X Shine Top Coat ($10.50) is a great choice of topcoat. If you want to purchase Sephora’s Formula X nail cleanser, base coat and topcoat, it comes in a four-step system (including the nail color of your choice) called Formula X’s The System ($32).

5. Try out a gel manicure

Should you forgo traditional nail polish for gel? “Regular nail polish dries as its solvents evaporate,” Gibson says. “Gel polish will not dry unless it is cured under a UV or LED light.” So what does this mean in terms of pros and cons of gel polish?

The pros

When done right, gel manicures won’t chip for two to four weeks. They’re “perfect for people who travel or just don’t have the time or patience to get a manicure every week,” says Gibson.

Your nails will look super shiny and the gel polish can even be used to extend the nails in a similar way that acrylic nails do.

The cons

To remove gel nails, you either have to file them off, soak them off with acetone or get them taken off by your manicurist. “Because of the semi-permanent nature of the process, removing the gels can be very damaging to your natural nail and can leave your nails weak and thin,” Gibson says.

Her final recommendation is if you want to use gel polish, then you should go to a professional for both application and removal since the process can potentially be very damaging if done incorrectly.

Days at the beach or the pool are no match for these amazing tips for how to achieve a long-lasting mani! Keep them in mind next time you debate going to the salon – learning how to do a killer manicure can save you time and money, which are both precious things for us collegiettes.

UPDATE: The suspect has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill. Hodkinson is 66 years old and owns a home inspection business, according to NBC. NBC says that law enforcement officials are still unclear of the motivation of the attack. President Donald Trump will make an address from the White House this afternoon, according to CBS.

ORIGINAL STORY: A Republican lawmaker was shot Wednesday morning at a park in Alexandria, Va., when a gunman opened fire at a GOP baseball team practice, The Washington Postreports.

Rep. Steve Scalise, a Louisiana congressman and the House majority whip, was one of several people shot. Scalise is wounded in the hip area but is in stable condition, according to NBC

Republican Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama was one of the congressmen at the field. In an interview with CNN, he said he heard Scalise scream that he was shot. Brooks said the attacker shot both of the Capitol Police officers, who were at the field as security details, but that both have non-life-threatening injuries.

Alexandria police tweeted that five people have been transported to local hospitals, including one suspect.

Katie Fillus, a bystander who was near the baseball field with plans to walk her dog, told the Post that she heard “very, very loud popping sounds.” After seeing a police officer get shot in front of her, Fillus “belly crawled" back to her car, where she ducked to hide from the shooter.

This morning’s baseball practice was the last practice before a Congressional Baseball Game scheduled for Thursday. The Congressional Baseball Game is an annual partisan competition consisting of Senate and House members who play to support Washington D.C.-area charities.

J. Crew Is Getting Ready to Close A Bunch of Stores

Unfortunately, I think we can all agree that the era of the "mall clothing store" is slowly coming to an end. Since the beginning of 2017, we've seen hundreds of BCBGs and Abercrombies being closed nationwide, while chains like Wet Seal have been wiped off the map completely. Now, it seems like J. Crew might be the next brand to bite the dust. Just recently, 250 employees were laid off from J. Crew's parent company. Bloomberg has reported declining sales for over 11 fiscal quarters as well, leading executives to shut down 20 stores across the country in an effort to ease costs. What's to blame for this shift in the market? A lot of experts say it's the rise of online retailers

CEO Jim Brett's strategy to help revitalize the brand involves bringing "stronger value" and "evolving pricing architecture to align with customer expectations," so more affordable clothes, hopefully? J. Crew is also trying to extend its reach wherever it can, selling merchandise online and in stores with companies like Nordstrom.

J. Crew Seersucker Jumpsuit ($98 at Nordstrom)

While it's not looking good for J. Crew, their sister store, Madewell, is actually doing quite well, according to Cosmopolitan. The brand reported a sales increase of around 17 percent and is planning on opening 10 new stores. I say good on them, Madewell has cuter things anyway!

During her four-day-long live stream leading up to the release of her new album, Witness, Katy Perry suffered... a bit of a mishap on stage. Just after performing "Swish Swish," her all-chainmail outfit started to split around the crotch region. Pure awesomeness ensued.

"I have a hole in my pants. Letting it all hang out now. So, okay. Don't look over here," she announced to the audience while continuing to perform like nothing at all had happened. What a true performer. I would have turned beet-red and fled the stage, crying. She managed to avoid peak embarrassment, however, as photographers were moved away from the front row.

Now that's how you handle a moment like that. BRB, singing "When I Ripped My Pants" by Spongebob to myself.

Bella Thorne is basically the new Kylie of colorful hair—except she actually dyes her hair, rather than defaulting to a wig. The former Disney Channel has really been experimenting with her roots as of late. She just dyed her hair the hottest of hot pink and documented it all on Instagram for us to watch.

Bella's sister Dani took the reigns during the makeover sesh and turned Bella's locks the brightest shade of pink possible. Teen Vogue reports that it's not the first time Dani has dyed Bella's hair, but it is the first time Bella has gone pink. The actress also added extensions to the look to really cause double the neon vibrancy.

Bella's hair evolution has a long history. Though she emerged as a strawberry blonde/redhead on the sets of Disney, she's really played around with ombré, neon tips and blue hair previously. Here's a look at her past hair colors:

1. Ginger

2. Blonde

 3. Neon dip dye

4. Ombré

5. Black & Blue
