What You Need to Know About the Shooting That Killed a Police Officer in Paris

0
0

On Thursday night, a gunman opened fire in Paris on the Champs-Élysées, killing one police officer and severely wounding two, according to the Associated Press

After the gunman opened fire, he attempted to flee on foot and was shot dead by an officer.

This attack comes right before the highly anticipated French Presidential election. According to The New York Times, analysts believe an attack like this one could cause people to vote for the candidate "perceived as tougher on crime and terrorism."

Immediately following the Thursday night attack, French policemen and soldiers closed off the heavily populated area. Many tourists who emerged from restaurants and stores, completely unaware of the attack, were searched by police and military personnel.

According to the AP, police say the attacker was likely acting alone, and directed his attacks towards police patrolling the tourist-heavy Franklin Roosevelt Subway station.

Just after midnight, the Islamic State declared they were behind the attack in a message posted on a jihad channel.

Peter R. Neumann, the director of the International Center for the Study of Radicalization and Political Violence at King’s College London, told the Times that the speed with which ISIS claimed responsibility made it seem like they really did plan the attack.

Sadly, of course, this is not the first terrorist attack Paris has endured in the past couple of years. In 2015, 128 Parisians were killed in a series of mass shootings and suicide bombers, heightening the fear of another attack on the City of Love.

As the premises were secured, and the gunman was identified, President François Hollande addressed the fearful nation and offered his condolences and admiration for the police force. “It has been the case for a number of months, and we will have absolute vigilance when it comes to the elections,” he said, “but everyone will understand that at this hour, my thoughts are with the family of the police who were killed and with those close to the wounded policeman.”

Katy Perry Hated the Unicorn Frappuccino So Much She Couldn't Even Swallow It

Katy Perry is the latest celeb to take aim at the Unicorn Frappuccino and oh boy, were shots fired. The singer taste-tested the Starbucks concoction on her Snapchat Thursday and captioned the video, “I couldn’t handle drinking my own blood.” Of course, there was a unicorn emoji too.

I love her, I have no words @katyperry #katyperry #katycats #KP4 #keiry

A post shared by KATY PERRY (@katyperrygoals) on

The first few seconds looked promising, but then Katy had to go and spit it out. While we truly believe she wasn't a fan of the Insta-ready beverage, the comedic timing of this clip makes it seem like it was scripted, which makes it even funnier.

Regardless, just add Katy to the list of those who think the drink missed the mark.

Blake Lively Would Do a 'Gossip Girl' Reunion, So How Can We Make It Happen?

0
0

Long-gone TV shows have found new audiences in this age of reboots and reunions. And a lot of Gossip Girl fans would love to see the series join in. Hope has been dim thus far, but leave it to Blake Lively to intervene.

In a new interview with Variety, Blake was totally on board with the idea of a GG reunion.

“I don’t know. Why not?” Lively said. “It sort of all depends. Would I do seven years of the show? No, because it’s hard work and I’ve got my babies, and I don’t want to be away from them that much.”

It’s been five years since the Upper East Siders said goodbye, but the actress expressed she would be interested in returning if the opportunity presented itself.

“I’ve just learned in life you never say never. I’m looking to do something that I haven’t done yet, not something that I did. But would I do that? Who knows—if it was good, if it made sense. We had so much fun shooting and living and working in New York City,” Lively explained.

While it’s not exactly a guarantee that the show will return, it’s enough to suggest it could happen. Either way, we’ll be over here binge-watching while we admire the fashion, immerse ourselves in the drama and fall in love with the romances.

This New Bra Company for Small-Chested Women Is So Empowering

Shopping for bras is never easy, but for small-chested women, the hunt for a perfect bra is endless. Although bras in smaller sizes definitely don't lack in variety of colors, materials and designs, there seems to be a problem all women with small boobs encounter: the bras never fit. Well, thanks to a an awesome new company, this problem has a solution.

Founded by lady bosses Jaclyn Fu and Lia Winograd, Pepper is a new line of bras specifically for smaller cup sizes. As the founders state perfectly, "after searching, buying, and returning countless bras, [they] realized there isn’t an affordable, flattering, and comfortable bra out there made just for small cup sizes. One-size-fits-all designs and marketing by mass retail stores marginalize certain body types, rather than solving specific small boob issues (hello, gaps!)." So Pepper is here to literally fill that gap with their All-You bra, which "celebrates what you got, so that you feel authentically you in a bra made just for you."

Pepper launched on Kickstarter on April 12, and surpassed its fundraising goal in just a few days! Clearly Fu and Winograd are onto something. If Pepper seems like a fit for you, you can pre-order a bra for $40 right now. Come on, you know you want to.

Shonda Rhimes Regrets Killing Off This Random 'Grey's Anatomy' Character

0
0

Throughout Grey's Anatomy's 13 seasons, producer and creator Shonda Rhimes has killed off plenty of beloved characters. After all of the tragic losses, it would be natural for her to have some regrets.

You may remember the episode in Season 2 where a bomb was inside a patient. Not only was this episode ~*insanely*~ stressful, but it was also one of the most memorable since Meredith almost died. According to HelloGiggles, Shonda has some regrets about killing off Dylan, a character from the bomb squad. Remember him? After the bomb left the patient's body, we saw Dylan walk away with it in his hands and then explode. A little melodramatic, but hey, it's Grey's—what do you expect?

Before Kyle Chandler was cast as this character, Shonda was dead set on not changing the script since it literally said, "Dylan explodes." Kyle pitched different ideas for his character, but it kinda made sense for a guy from the bomb squad to be killed by a bomb. Shonda said she felt the character had to die that way. “He was written to explode. But I did not expect to have Kyle Chandler. I didn’t want to explode him," she said.

Years later, Shonda really regrets killing Dylan. But you know what they say: Shoulda, woulda, coulda!

Blake Lively Got Really Mad When This Reporter Asked About Her Go-To 'Power Outfit'

0
0

During the Variety New York Power of Women luncheon on Friday, a reporter asked Blake Lively what her go-to "power outfit" is, and the actress refused to answer the question. Blake was at the luncheon because of the work she's doing with Child Rescue Coalition to combat child pornography, so naturally Blake thought she would be talking about that.

The Huffington Post reports Blake told the reporter, "Come on, you want to talk about an outfit today? Come on, what about building women up? Outfits? Would you ask a man that?…You wouldn't ask a man what a power outfit was. I'm sorry."

Blake's frustration of course made it to Twitter. In this clip, you can see Blake is fed up.

Yes, we all wish we could steal Blake's closet, but who can blame her for wanting to talk about real issues too? Let's remember: She's more than her wardrobe.

Kendall Jenner's Denim Skirt Combines All the Season's Trends

No matter the season, Kendall Jenner always rocks the latest trends, even though she sometimes takes it a tad too far. She recently stepped out in a denim skirt that captures all the new trends popping up for spring and summer, the perfect combination between a denim mini and a midi skirt. Of course Kendall pulls it off like a champ.

The piece was created from different patches of denim sewn together and cut right in the middle, giving off a very cool, edgy vibe. Jenner paired it with a black camisole top with subtle lace detailing from Alexander Wang which only complemented the skirt further with its contrasting tones. Matching accessories such as Kendall's suede mules and retro-esque oval sunglasses completed the very casual but polished look. Why so stylish, Ken?

15 Signs You're Trying to Avoid Human Contact At All Costs

0
0

We all know what it feels like to get to that point in your life where you want to avoid everything with two eyes, two legs and a head. Parents, professors and even your friends mostly just bother you. It is these feelings and so much more (so, so much more) that propel us into the perpetual state of imagining we are stuck on an island alone in pure, solitary bliss. If this sounds like you, here are 15 signs you like avoiding human contact.

1. You have a special ability to turn off your lights as quickly as possible to make it look like you're sleeping

2. Going outside is a foreign concept to you

3. Takeout and pizza delivery are how you survive

4. Your friends know to only expect one text a week and nothing more

5. You have unsuccessfully tried on more than one occasion to convince your dean to turn your classes into online programs

6. You now go on social media so little that your laptop and phone always time out of accounts

7. Because seeing people on TV is even too much, you prefer reading over Netflix

8. When people talk to you when you aren't in the mood, you go full Cersei Lannister

9. If you ever hear a knock on your dorm door, you cower under the bed and hope they go away ASAP

10. There is a permanent imprint on your bed because you spend about 99.9 percent of your time there

11. Before you leave your room, you put your ear to the door to hear if there's anybody outside

12. Online shopping is everything to you

13. You make it seem like you're busy whenever anyone calls you

14. If you’re ever sick, you ask a classmate to get notes and either email them or discreetly slip them under your door

15. You often wear giant sunglasses when you go outside so no one will see you or talk to you

This YouTuber Used a Peel-Off Blackhead Mask All Over Her Body & It's Horrifying

0
0

Warning: If you're anything like me, and yell at your screen while watching people do crazy sh*t, you might lose your voice after watching this video. Vlogger Nicole Skyes did a  blackhead peel-off mask - except she used it all over her body. The video is cringeworthy and I can't take it! Her video makes waxing seems like a piece of cake.

Before putting on the mask on her entire body, she had to shave first. But (uh-oh) she forgot to shave her hairy stomach - which she only remembered after putting on the mask! Skyes describes the pain as, "getting scratched by 10,000 cats, especially the back of the arm.” How wonderful.

Her body was super red afterwards, complete with bumps and all (ouch). In the end, she was in so much pain that she ended up rinsing the rest off. On the bright side, she also mentions in the video that her skin is now super soft. There are better, more painless ways to get soft skin, girl.

What people do to go viral! Please do not follow in Skyes's footsteps. If she taught us one thing, it's that when it comes to peel-off masks, you should stick to just your face.

Troian Bellisario is Working on a Film Based on Her Struggle With Anorexia

0
0

While we're all ridiculously bummed about Pretty Little Liars coming to an end this year after seven seasons, it's already looking like we won't have to say goodbye to Troian Bellisa, a.k.a. Spencer Hastings, any time soon.

Refinery29 reports that Bellisario has written, produced and plans to star in a movie, Feed, based on her battle with anorexia several years ago. Bellisario is only just now getting a chance to work on the project, but it's been eight years in the making - she actually wrote the script before starring in PLL.

Family dinner last night to prepare for the premiere tonight!

A post shared by Troian Bellisario (@sleepinthegardn) on

While she says the film isn't an exact copy of her experience, she told Rotten Tomatoes in a recent interview that she wanted to have the chance to make people understand what living with an eating disorder is like.

"It’s not the exact events, but what I wanted to do with the film was get the audience to understand what it sounds like and what it feels like to be struggling with that illness," Bellisario told Rotten Tomatoes. "I struggled with anorexia for many years and one of the most difficult things about that was it was very tough for me to explain to my family and friends why it was so hard for me to disengage with that."

In the past, the actress has spoken out about eating disorders and her own experience with anorexia - back in November, she came out in support of Hillary Clinton, citing the candidate's views on mental health treatment and care.

Apparently People Are Wearing Bedazzled Boobs to Coachella

0
0

While there are some festival trends that we're kind of over by now (we're looking at you, flower crowns and flast tats), and some that are just plain not okay in terms of cultural appropriation, we can get behind some fresh festival fashion. The latest trend that's taking over Coachella? Bedazzled boobs - and yes, it's exactly what it sounds like.

As Allure noticed, the look that's on the rise basically involves replacing a shirt with enough glitter and gemstones to rival your average unicorn.

While it seems like the perfect eye-catching look to rock at a music festival (becuase seriously, where else are you going to wear this?), I have a few questions. Namely, how exactly do you get all of that bling to stay on your body? And what prevents you from sweating it off in the middle of the desert? Lastly, exactly how does one afford enough glitter and gemstones to wear them as a shirt replacement? Am I supposed to just roll up into my local Michael's or Hobby Lobby and buy their entire stock of all things sparkly? Let me know.

7 Daily Habits of Wildly Successful Women

0
0

Here at Her Campus, we’re all about helping you reach your dream job goals—whether it’s through networking and education from industry experts at Her Conference or by dishing out the details about the careers of women who are on top of their game. But we all have to wonder what these women do every day to stay on top of it all, right? We spoke to seven women who are killing it, both as college students and working professionals, to see what they had to say about the daily habits that keep them on track for success.

1. Work it out with a workout

Following trends isn’t limited to fashion, beauty and the Kardashians. As the financial editor for The Today Show, Jean Chatzky is on trend-watch 24/7 to keep an eye out for the latest developments in the market and the finance realm. As if that wasn’t enviable enough, she also hosts HerMoney, a podcast on women’s finance.

As for her must-do daily habit? “Running. I find I get my best ideas when I'm out for a run (or sometimes in the shower) and it also keeps me sane in a hectic work environment.”

Try a fun new workout class like barre or kickboxing next time you need to break a sweat and break out of a rut!

2. A good night’s sleep does wonders

In the technology industry, innovation is critical to maintaining relevance and staying more successful than close competitors. As an innovation and business continuity analyst for Comcast Corporation, college student Lindsey Thompson offers critical insight to the company.

Being a busy collegiette comes at a price, though! “I really aim to get to bed by 10:00, 10:30 at the latest,” she says. “I'm a huge advocate for the eight to nine hours of sleep a night thing so going to bed at 10:00 and getting up at 7:00 gives me a solid nine hours. I don't need coffee to wake up in the morning and I can easily last all day without getting tired.”

Just think of how much you’d save by adjusting your bedtime and skipping Starbucks every now and then!

3. Collaborate with others

When Elkus Manfredi, one of the top architecture firms in the country, was founded in 1988, Elizabeth Lowrey was the firm’s first employee. Inspired by her parents’ careers as architects, she’s now the director of interior architecture and a principal with the firm. It’s her creative eye that has overseen the aesthetic development and led the design process for clients like Walt Disney Imagineering, among others. Elizabeth emphasizes the importance of honoring the diversity of her clients.

“Our goal is to break down the silos between disciplines to spark the great ideas that come from interdisciplinary interaction,” she says. It’s no surprise that Elizabeth’s most important daily habit is collaborating. “Collaboration is my daily habit and the only way I can work,” she says. “I love to be provocative with my team and the process. A project becomes richer from the participation of varied disciplines and points of view.”

Consider this food for thought the next time your professor assigns another group project.

4. Remember: you come first

Anit Hora was studying Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of traditional holistic medicine, when she began making products and selling them at a friend’s yoga studio, the precursor to her founding of herbal apothecary Mullein & Sparrow. Her work as an esthetician and her impeccable eye for design resulted in irresistibly chic beauty and skincare products that really work—Anthropologie and Birchbox are big fans. From design and production to international merchandising, Anit has her hands on all aspects of running the business.

For Anit, taking some “me” time every day is what she believes has contributed the most to her success. “I believe self-reflection and meditation are huge,” she says. “They help me to make sense of all the ideas and thoughts in my head, and how I can bring those ideas to light.”

Treat yourself to more than just a study break every now and then and reset by doing something you really love!

 5. Don’t let others hold you back

When MelRo was just eighteen years old, she was homeless and living in a shelter with her young son. After a traumatic childhood in and out of the foster care system, she was battling adult depression and PTSD when a modeling agent scouted her while she was shopping for diapers. Reality proved much more incredible than any fairy tale when she began gracing runways, magazine covers and editorial fashion spreads for names like Glamour, Essence and Lucky. Throughout her career, she’s also served as a children’s welfare advocate, educating child welfare services and foster parents on how to communicate and care for traumatized children. Her work for foster children and adolescents is inspired by her desire to prove that their potential is not limited by their past.

MelRo was incredibly candid with us about the importance of forgiveness and how practicing forgiveness every day has empowered her to be her best self.

“To really be successful, I had to first heal the pain from my abusive childhood,” she says. “Refusing to forgive is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. That poison was killing me and killing my creativity and all that was beautiful about me. It was a hard decision to forgive, and let me be clear that forgiving does not mean that I think what they did to me is okay. It means that I will not allow it to hurt me and hold me back anymore.”

Is it really worth it to hang onto bad blood with someone else if it means sacrificing your own productivity and well-being? The answer is no. Besides, you never know what opportunities could be on the horizon if you're too distracted by petty drama to see them.

6. Look on the bright side

Imagine this: you’ve scored your dream internship with an industry-leading company, and after months of working hard and hustling, you have a full-time job offer from that company by the fall of your senior year. Katie McCabe made this her reality after a six-month internship, learning tech sales from the industry’s leader in cloud operations. She manages over forty client enterprise accounts and constantly jet-sets around the world for the job she loves. Even more impressive? She’s launching her own swimwear line, called Syreni.

Between traveling for her corporate job and managing her startup, there’s no such thing as a typical day for Katie. Keeping a positive outlook, however, continues to be her most important daily habit. “I think the most important thing to do to increase your chances of success is to make the conscious effort to have a more positive attitude”

Try this out yourself by creating a gratitude journal. To start, simply write down things you're grateful for; like having a budget to sustain your indulgence of artisan coffee, or the fact that you have supportive people in your life. Then, on a not-great day, look over your gratitude list and remember the good things that will transcend your bad day.

7. Always look to self-improve

Our final #GirlBoss is Alaina Leary, a graduate student who has written under her own byline for top magazines like Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Seventeen and far too many more to list here. Her pieces have spanned the gamut of LGBTQ+ interests to women’s empowerment and many more topics that are sometimes difficult to cover gracefully and eloquently while still expressing a firm opinion. Alaina has been celebrated by her editors for doing all of the above. But this doesn’t mean that she’s complacent with her work. On top of writing and editing, she’s an accomplished creative in graphic and web design, social media management, professional photography and entrepreneurship.

“The most important habit to my creative process is constantly thinking of myself and all my work as a work-in-progress,” she says. “Nothing is ever done. Yes, my pieces may be published and far past the stage where I can do more editing, but I revisit them to look for ways I could have added, new angles I didn't see, what worked and what didn't. I think of my accomplishments as stepping stones rather than a final product.”

No matter what your major is or what industry your dream job is in, you can learn a thing or two about setting yourself up for success from these amazing women. While going to bed earlier and embracing group projects won’t guarantee your dream career by tomorrow, all of these tips from wildly successful women will set you up to be just like them sooner than you think.

This Viral Video Shows a Mother Crying After an American Airlines Flight Attendant Allegedly Hit Her With a Stroller

ICYMI, it has not been a stellar past few weeks for air travel, *cough* namely for United Airlines - but United is now not the only airline making headlines for the way customers are being treated.

A video depicting a mother crying after allegedly being hit on the head with her stroller by an American Airlines flight attendant is going viral after another passenger on AA Flight  591 from San Francisco to Dallas-Ft. Worth filmed the incident. Posting it to Facebook, the passenger, Surain Adyanthaya, captioned the video, "OMG! AA Flight attendant violently took a stroller from a lady with her baby on my flight, hitting her and just missing the baby. Then he tried to fight a passenger who stood up for her.”

According to ABC News, the conflict resulted from the flight attendant yelling at the woman for attempting to store her stroller in the plane's overhead bin. The video also shows another male passenger coming to the woman's defense, saying to the visibly heated flight attendant, "Hey bud, hey bud, you do that to me and I'll knock you flat."

On the bright side, American Airlines was quick to react to the incident. 20 minutes after the plane landed in Dallas, the airline issued a statement to the Washington Post, saying that the flight attendant had been grounded until further notice, and that the mother and her two children traveling with her had been upgraded to first class.

"We are deeply sorry for the pain we have caused this passenger and her family and to any other customers affected by the incident,” Leslie Scott, a representative from American, told the Post. “We are making sure all of her family’s needs are being met while she is in our care.”

While incidents like these shouldn't be happening to begin with, United might at least want to take note from American of the proper way to handle these situations when they do occur.

Selena Gomez Went to David Henrie's Wedding and It Was Basically a 'Wizards of Waverly Place' Reunion

Despite the fact that she's been super busy spending time with her new beau The Weeknd at Coachella and promoting her new Netflix show 13 Reasons Why, Selena Gomez still made time for a very important occasion - David Henrie's wedding, a.k.a. her former Wizards of Waverly Place co-star/Disney Channel TV brother.

Of course, Selena also killed it when picking the perfect wedding look, opting for a red cutout dress by Emilia Wickstead, and wearing her hair in a pretty braided updo to show off her gold hoops.

Oh and don't freak out or anything, but did we mention that there was a Wizards of Waverly Place reunion photo involved? And that it is everything we ever could have possibly hoped for?

In case you needed any proof that your childhood is still alive and well, let's not forget that David apparently told People that even though their show ended in 2012, Selena was still one of the first people he told he was getting married. Aww!

Samsung Clapped Back at This Guy's Dick Pic Joke on Twitter & I Can't Stop Laughing

Am I the only one who is totally given life by companies that manage to have an unapologetically savage social media presence? I only wish my own Twitter feed could be just as sassy.

The latest in social media savagery, however, comes via Samsung and I can't stop laughing. On Friday, the company tweeted a picture of its newly-released phone, the Galaxy S8, along with a caption asking users to share the first photo they took with their new phones. Of course, because this is Twitter after all, some genius responded with, "It was a dick pic."

While tons of companies would just ignore the response and continue to go about their ~super professional~ social media business, Samsung wasn't having any of this guy's shit, and shut him down with one simple emoji.

I'M SCREAMING. If this isn't the best thing I've seen all week, I'm not really sure what is. Just going to file this away as a seriously amazing response for the next time a guy sends a totally unsolicited picture of his, ahem, eggplant emoji.

New Beyoncé Baby Bump Photos Are Here to Make Your Entire Week

File this under most obvious news ever, but Beyoncé is absolutely KILLING the maternity style game. Not only that, but she's here to bless us all with even MORE 'grams of her baby bump, and naturally, we're obsessed.

According to E!, the Queen reunited with her former Destiny's Child bandmates to promote Kelly Rowland's new book about parenting, called Whoa, Baby! Not only did the band get a seriously adorable photo together (we're always here for a #TBT-style Destiny's Child reunion), but Bey even showed off one of her best maternity looks yet, and I'm still not over how good she looks.

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on

Her 'gram shows Queen Bey posing in an amazing nude cape-dress, which she paired with thigh-high cutout boots that I'm estimating have at least a four inch heel.

Since Bey has been pretty hush-hush about her due date, we can't exactly be sure of when to expect the twins - but considering the timeline it's not unlikely that she's possibly in her third (!!!) trimester, all while rocking thigh-high boots and looking better than ever. Seriously, how are her feet not super swollen? Are normal person pregnancy struggles like that just completely below the Queen entirely? I have so many questions.

14 Fun Activities To Do When You're Flying Solo

Isn't "me" time just the best? When you’re alone, you can do anything your heart desires, and the best part is no one—not your friends, roommates or SO—will be there to judge you or complain about it. So for those times when your roommate goes home for the weekend, your friends have to work, your SO has to cram or you just want some time to yourself, here are 14 things you can do all by your fabulous self when you’re flying solo.

1. Wander around a bookstore

Bookstores are best enjoyed alone. This way you can traipse through the charming literary aisles at your leisure, thumbing through as many books and magazines as you possibly can and daydreaming about being a part of all the beautiful stories on those shelves. That sounds like a pretty stellar way to spend the day in our book (too much?).

2. Chill out at a coffee shop

Who said you can’t have an amazing hangout sesh all on your own at your favorite coffee shop? Order your favorite brew, find a seat and just chill. Coffee shops are some of the best places for people-watching. Or you could always bring along that new book you just bought…

3. Netflix marathon and snacks

Some days, what we want more than anything is just to turn on some Netflix and binge our current TV obsession. We all know it’s not a true marathon unless snacks are involved, though. So bring out the candy and cookies, and let’s get it going.

4. Go to a museum

Going to a museum with other people is fun, but going to a museum by yourself is relaxing. You can take however much time you want to walk through, without having to worry about matching another person’s pace. Mariel Tishma, a sophomore at Columbia College Chicago, enjoys going solo to museums. “I can look at weird art and not wonder if I’m lingering too long on something or if the other person is bored,” she says. Museums are also a great place to just be. Like Mariel says, “It’s just a time to be quiet and not think, so it’s also meditative in a way.”

5. Drive around pretending to be a pop star

True freedom is being able to drive around town with the windows rolled down belting Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together,” Sia’s “Chandelier” or pretty much any Adele song and not caring at all that the guy in the car next to you is giving you a weird look. Obviously, he’s just jealous because you’re having a blast. Let me live!

6. Pamper yourself

Having a spa day with your girls is great. But having a spa day with your #1 girl (yourself) is priceless and seriously necessary. Whip out the luxurious lotions, cozy candles and pretty polishes to give yourself the treatment you deserve. Complete the package with your favorite playlist of soothing songs. We’re feeling relaxed just thinking about it.

7. Have a solo dance party

Blast your favorite anthems until your neighbors/roommate(s) beat on the door, and then turn the music up louder! Just kidding, don’t do that. But you should dance your heart out all around your room. If you’re feeling ambitious, look up some choreography on YouTube and try it out; then make up your own. Your friends will be way impressed the next time you all go out dancing.

8. Shop ‘til you drop

It’s great to go shopping with your friends, your sister or your mom…until it isn’t. You know that feeling when you’re exhausted from having shopped for three hours and just want to go home, but the person you’re with is just warming up? Yeah, that doesn’t happen when you shop by yourself. Plus, you can try on all the clothes you want without feeling like you’re making your friends wait on you. AND you don’t have to go into the stores your friends like just because they went into the stores you like. Win-win-win.

9. Go see a movie by yourself

Pick a movie, any movie. You can get your ugly cry on with a super tragic love story or laugh until you can’t feel your face in a ridiculous comedy. The first time you go to a movie on your own can be scary, but once you do it, you’ll feel empowered.

You might even discover you enjoy going to the movies alone so much you make it a regular thing, like Sydnee Lyons, a first-year graduate student at Florida Atlantic University. “I love going to the movies by myself! 10/10 would recommend," says Sydnee. "It's something I started doing during my undergrad program to unwind. I'd go on a weekday at a really off time, when there were probably one or two other people in the theater. It's been two years since I graduated and I still do this. Honestly, I find the whole experience really peaceful. Plus, it's a bonus that I don't have to compromise on the movie or snack choices!”

No matter what you choose, you’ll feel liberated knowing that you don’t need an SO—or even your girls for that matter—to take you on a nice little movie date; you can do it yourself and love it.

10. Show your skin some love

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we’re not always as diligent as we should be about taking care of our skin properly. So with your newfound free time, make a date with your skin and really pull out all the stops. We’re talking face mask, cleanser, moisturizer, spot treatment—the works. Your skin will thank you.

11. Take some pics, but not for social media

When was the last time you took a picture of something just because? Not for Insta, Snapchat or Facebook but for you and you alone. You don’t need a fancy camera; just take your phone and photograph something that stands out to you. Maybe it’s the neighbor’s cat that always ends up at your doorstep or the ramen you meticulously prepared. Whatever it is, snap a pic of it, edit it if you want to and then sort it into a special album on your phone that’s just for you—not for social media. We’re telling you, it’s so cathartic to have something that’s only for your eyes.

12. Go work out

There are few things that feel as productive as a solid workout. Getting to pop your headphones in and focus solely on you for anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour is seriously amazing.

“I love working out alone," says Rachel Petty, a junior at James Madison University. "It gets my mind off anything that’s stressing me out and I just get to have some alone time."

Workouts are the perfect place to spend some quality time checking in with yourself. Not only are you paying attention to your body physically, but you’re also paying attention to your mental health by allowing yourself this time to organize your thoughts.

13. Go out to eat as a proud, independent woman

One of the scariest abilities to master is the art of going out to eat alone and enjoying it. When you’re at a restaurant and you look around and only see couples, it can be kind of disheartening. But, it can also be super empowering to realize you are your favorite person, and how do we show our favorite people how much we care about them? By taking them out to dinner. So head to that new Thai place you’ve been dying to try or the pizza place that serves pies fit for a goddess. If there’s delicious food involved, we’re pretty sure it’ll be a good time.

14. Do that one thing you never do, but always want to

What’s that one thing that you always think about doing? Maybe it’s learning to sew, organizing your closet, signing up for a dance class or finally finishing that book you started last year. Whatever that thing (or multiple things) is for you, do it! Now that you’ve got some time to yourself, just really go for it. Think about how proud of yourself you’ll be when you accomplish that thing that’s been sitting in your mind for forever.

No matter who you are, we all need some alone time here and there. Who knows, maybe you’ll even discover something new about yourself. College should be about discovering and creating your favorite version of you, something that can be done best when you take some time out to just focus on you
