Here's What You Need to Know About the Bomb America Dropped on Afghanistan

0
0

A week after the United States launched 59 missiles at Syria, military operations under President Trump have escalated to an unprecedented level.

The United States dropped the largest non-nuclear bomb in its arsenal on Afghanistan yesterday, NBC reports. The target? A cave complex occupied by members of the terror group ISIS, also known as the Islamic State, in the rural Nangarhar Province.

Officially called the “GBU-43,” the bomb weighs in at a whopping 22,000 pounds. According to a report by The New York Times, it’s powerful enough to flatten anything within a 1,000 yard radius. Fittingly, it’s been dubbed “the mother of all bombs”—and it’s never been used in combat before.

With such a massive size, the GBU-43 can be expected to cause some serious damage. CNN reports 36 non-civilian casualties, as well as the collapse of three underground tunnels in the complex. Weapons and ammunition were also annihilated.

But if ISIS has its strongholds in Iraq and Syria, why was a target in Afghanistan—1,500 miles away—hit with such a huge weapon?

This bombing falls within the “total authorization” President Trump has given the Pentagon to pursue his mission of obliterating terrorist organizations while in office. On the campaign trail, he promised that a plan to defeat ISIS would be completed in 30 days. While one bombing can’t vanquish an entire group with footing in three countries—and we’re far past 30 days into Trump’s presidency—the Trump administration views Thursday’s mission as a step towards keeping his promise.

As Emily Winterbotham, a research fellow at a London-based think tank, explained to NBC News, “Clearly Trump has decided that ISIS—whether it is in Iraq, Syria, or Afghanistan—is something he’s going after.”

The Washington Post reports that the United States has cooperated with Afghan forces to fight the offshoot of ISIS in Afghanistan since 2015.

President Trump called the bombing“another very, very successful mission.” However, The New York Times suggested that national security experts are worried the bombing has ignited another wave of anti-American attitudes in Muslim-majority countries.

Vanessa Hudgens & Ashley Tisdale Will Be Friends Literally Forever

Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale may have left their High School Musical days behind them long ago—well, only nine years ago—but their BFF status is still going strong.

In an interview with Women’s Health, Hudgens revealed that she’s “a loyal person.” She's been in a devoted relationship with her boyfriend, Austin Butler, for the past six years, but she has another lasting relationship we're interested in: her friendship with Tisdale. “She’s one of those girlfriends who will be my friend forever,” Hudgens said.

Actions speak louder than words, though. In recent months, Tisdale and Hudgens have made it abundantly clear just how much they appreciate each other’s company.

After all, Tisdale named one of the eyeshadows in her Goddess eyeshadow palette “Nessa” after Hudgens. In a video about her eyeshadow palette, Tisdale told her fans, “The names were actually inspired by my girlfriends and all the goddesses in my life.” Aww! Though we have to wonder, what does it take for a girl to get into Tisdale’s squad of goddesses?

Plus, there was also that time Tisdale and Hudgens covered Elle King’s song “Ex’s and Oh’s” on Tisdale’s YouTube channel. While Sharpay and Gabriella never got the duet they deserved in the HSM trilogy, Tisdale and Hudgens' very first duet was amazing, as expected. We hope this won’t be the BFFs’ last singing collaboration.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Hudgens explained that she would love to work with Tisdale again. “Things are a little busy right now with Powerless, but somewhere down the line it would be so much fun.”

Last month, Hudgens told E! Online that she probably won't be making an appearance in the upcoming High School Musical 4. "I could be a teacher, but I refuse to be a teacher! I'm still a teenager at heart. So probably not with me, but I'm excited to see what they whip together," Hudgens explained.

While it sounds like Hudgens and Tisdale likely won't pop up in HSM 4, we can’t wait to see these two work on another project together. Until then, Hudgens and Tisdale are still giving us major friendship goals.

People Are Already Convinced This Harry Styles Song Is About Taylor Swift

We will never really give up hope that the celebrity couple that broke our hearts may still have deep feelings for each other. That’s right, you guessed it: Taylor Swift and Harry Styles.

Although it seems like that relationship is a thing of the past, Harry’s upcoming album may already have fans thinking otherwise. The ex-One Directioner released the track list from his debut album on Instagram, with one song in particular catching fans' eyes. The song titled “Ever Since New York” can’t help but make them think of a hit song we all know and love: Taylor Swift’s “Welcome to New York.”

HARRY.STYLES //12.MAY.17//

A post shared by @harrystyles on

Hmm, “Welcome to New York”… “Ever Since New York”… Seems like New York was a very important place for both of them. This couldn’t possibly be a mere coincidence, could it? It does raise a lot of suspicions. According to HelloGiggles, New York is where the couple was often spotted during the early stages of their relationship.

Whether this new song is about Taylor or not, fans are dying to hear what Harry's album (or more specifically this song) could be about. There’s no doubt we'll be secretly hoping it's about “Haylor.”

Maybe this relationship took a bigger toll on the two than we ever could’ve imagined.

This Beauty Vlogger Made a United Airlines Makeup Tutorial & People Are Pissed

The shocking news of Dr. David Dao being forced out of his seat on a United flight to Louisville, Kentucky, on Sunday due to an overcrowded plane issue has been nothing less than heartbreaking. The man was dragged down the aisle of the plane, and had to be taken to the hospital for his injuries. It seems as if everyone is empathetic of what the doctor went through, especially after the video of the incident went viral. Even though there have been quite a few memes and posts made criticizing United and how they deal with overcrowded planes, everyone agrees that Dr. Dao was treated horrendously that day.

Well, that is, except one beauty vlogger named Mykie. She's known for creating bloody, gory looks that would certainly be spooky enough for Halloween, but it seems as if she's gone way too far with this video. She recreated what she called was a makeup look "inspired" by the events that occurred on that infamous United flight. Some of her followers are stepping up to say her video was entirely satirical, but how far is too far?

Throughout her video, she used fake blood to make her face resemble the injured face of Dr. Dao, and even made remarks about putting the blood on messy so "it looks like there was a struggle. You really want that 'just dragged down the aisle' kind of effect," she says. As if that wasn't enough already, she even ended her video by asking United to reach out and collab on a future video.

Whether or not Mykie was being sarcastic in her video, her comments were extremely distasteful, and disrespected anyone who was harmed in this incident, especially Dr. Dao. Although Mykie initially defended her actions, the video has since been removed.

Someone Literally Got Stung By a Scorpion on a United Flight

United Airlines keeps taking L’s. First, they kicked two young girls off of a flight for wearing leggings. Then, video of United employees violently dragging a passenger off of an overbooked flight sparked international backlash. And all of two days ago, a woman came forward with allegations that she was groped by a fellow passenger mid-flight.

In an astonishingly short period of time after these events, United has managed to ruin a passenger’s day yet again. And this time, poisonous insects were involved.

Last Sunday, Richard Bell boarded a United Airlines flight from Houston, Texas to Calgary, Canada on the way home from a vacation. As Bell tried to eat his in-flight lunch, according to the BBC, something fell from the overhead compartment onto his head. That something was a live scorpion. (Ew.)

In an interview with CNN, Bell’s wife, Linda, described the moment when the scorpion landed on her husband. “He grabbed [the scorpion] out of his hair and it fell onto his dinner table. As he was grabbing it by the tail it stung him.”

Flight attendants were able to catch the scorpion and flush it down an onboard toilet. Luckily, there were painkillers on board to temporarily treat Bell before landing. When the flight touched down in Canada, Bell received further assistance from medical officials at the airport.

United Airlines has not provided an explanation for how the scorpion ended up on board.

Naturally, social media didn’t waste time in cracking jokes about the incident.

Or throwing shade at United for their previous screw-ups.

As with the other PR nightmares they faced this week, United offered the Bells compensation for the incident. The couple didn’t specify what, exactly, “compensation” for an unexpected scorpion sting entailed.

At this rate, we know which airline would be responsible if Snakes On a Plane were to happen IRL.

Cara Delevingne Is the Latest Celeb to Shave Her Head

0
0

Oh no, indeed, because our favorite supermodel has chopped off all of her platinum locks. Cara Delevingne has joined Kristen Stewart, Katy Perry and Zoë Kravitz as the latest celebrity to cut off her hair and opt for a shorter look.

Cara posted "Oh no!" on her Instagram along with a picture of her cut hair.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any released images of Cara with her cropped hair yet–is it a bob? Is she totally bald? Is it a pixie cut? It was only yesterday that Teen Vogue was reporting that Cara had dyed a few strands pink in what they called "holographic hair," which now seems to be lying on the floor of some upscale salon.

So why the multiple changes? In March, Cara toldUSA Today that she decided to dye her hair randomly to try something new because, for her next part, she has to cut it all off. "I have to shave my head for my next part, so I have to do something different," she told USA Today. "So I dyed it. Just for fun. Just to change it up." Well it seems the day has come, and Cara has chopped it off to play a "dying young woman" in the film Life in a Year, co-staring Jaden Smith. Similarly, actress Shailene Woodley actually cut her hair–and cried while doing it–in order to play Hazel, who has cancer, in The Fault in Our Stars.

Though Cara's makeover was for a role, there has been a series of hair trends with female celebrities opting for shorter hair, including Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Watson with their pixie cuts. Now Katy Perry is even rocking "the Draco Malfoy."

We're all waiting to see how Cara pulls off her new look for such a sensitive role.

Teachers at This Connecticut Boarding School Sexually Abused Students for 40 Years

Yesterday, Choate Rosemary Hall boarding school released a report of over 20 instances of sexual abuse by 12 former teachers, USA Today reports. Choate was apparently prompted to undertake an internal investigation in 2013, after alumni reports of sexual abuse, but the formal investigation did not begin until after the publication of a Boston Globe article exposing similar cases at other elite centers of primary education, according to The New York Times.

The time at which the internal investigation first began is not made clear by the announcement, but the information wasn't made public until now in order to maintain the privacy of the victims and because the investigation was ongoing.

The first documented case of abuse by a teacher took place in the early 1960s, and the last case in the report is stated to have taken place in 2010. Many of the cases were not reported until several years after they took place, and in some instances not until after the death of the abusers.

“The conduct of these adults violated the foundation of our community: the sacred trust between students and the adults charged with their care,” said an announcement from the school’s board of trustees on Thursday.

“In some circumstances, Choate acted swiftly and decisively in response to reports of sexual misconduct, but in others it did not,” the announcement also states. “On behalf of Choate Rosemary Hall, we profoundly apologize.” According to USA Today, while these matters were addressed by the institution, in none of the cases were the local police made aware of the crimes.

Cases like this one shed light on the power dynamics constantly being navigated for students in school, and will hopefully prompt legislation or some sort of reform that provides better protection for students and better training and oversight for teachers or individuals in positions of power at institutions such as this one. There is much to be learned here.

Cole Sprouse Promises Jason Blossom's Killer Will Be Revealed Before Season 1 of 'Riverdale' Is Over

Riverdale may only be in its first season, but it's already keeping viewers on their toes. However, unlike many other teen mystery dramas (*cough* Pretty Little Liars *cough*), this show promises not to keep the identity of a murderer secret until its last season.

In an A.V. Club interview, Cole Sprouse (aka our beloved Jughead) claims Jason Blossom's killer will be revealed by the end of this season. “It needs to be said that we do resolve who killed Jason in season one. This is not like we’re going to string it out for you guys over six seasons,” he promises. Thank God.

The show’s cast has already shared their theories. Ugh. As if they don’t already know. Why must they toy with our emotions?

Look on the bright side: At least we'll be in the loop soon, too.

The 13 Stages of Watching #GreysOnAPlane

0

WOW. Thursday night's episode of Grey's Anatomy, dubbed #GreysOnAPlane, was an absolute roller coaster ride, that's for sure. Before I watched the episode, I knew it was going to be intense because Meredith was once in a plane crash that caused her to lose two important people in her life, Lexie and Mark. As soon as a lightning bolt hit the plane during this episode, Meredith started having the worst flashbacks, and my heart couldn't handle it at all.

I sat on my couch watching, and I'm pretty sure I got a least 10 gray hairs because it was that intense. Passengers getting brain bleeds, crazy turbulence, arguments with flight attendants, sex in a bathroom—I promise you, this was probably the most emotional episode of Season 13 so far.

1. You get all comfy and prepare yourself for craziness.

Bring it on, Shonda. I've seen 12 seasons—I can handle anything.

2. You're in shock because Meredith and Riggs join the Mile High Club.

FINALLY. So happy rn.

3. You ask yourself, "Why the heck are they flying through a bad thunderstorm?"

Soooo, don't pilots usually avoid giant thunderstorms during a flight?

4. You have a heart attack because a huge lightning bolt strikes the plane and causes a passenger to fly to the ceiling and hit his head.

Is he dead??!?!?

5. You start eating nervously because you think the plane is going to crash and kill everyone just like last time.

No no no no!! Meredith can't go through this again.

6. Your heart literally breaks for her because she starts having awful flashbacks.

Pass the wine…

7. You clap at the TV because Meredith and Riggs begin taking care of injured patients in the middle of awful turbulence.

They better save these people!!!!

8. You're screaming, "You go, girl!" because Meredith performs a brain procedure on a patient with a straw, fingernail clippers and a needle.

She's such a heroic badass surgeon, ugh.

9. Then you want to scream at the flight attendant and pilot for not landing the plane.

Are these people going to die?!??!!?

10. Now your stress level is through the roof because you don't know what's going to happen.

I CAN'T WATCH THIS.

11. You panic even more because you want Meredith to save this patient's life and you want them to land the plane soon.

I can't even watch this.

12. And then you can finally breathe because the plane lands successfully and nobody died.

I need another drink.

13. Then you start crying because that entire episode was completely crazy and you just can't even anymore.

THANKS, SHONDA.

4 Ways Your Body is Telling You You’re Stressed

0
0

Classes, internships, jobs and graduation on top of everything else you have going on can truly put a lot of pressure on any college student. These stress-inducing factors, really take a toll on both our mental physical health. You may not always associate stress with physical health, but sometimes your body needs to give you the signal to take care of yourself. Finding these signs are not always easy, and can vary from person to person, but we’re here to help you identify the most common ones.

1. Your body temperature rises during a stressful situation

Have you ever thought about why you break a sweat when giving a speech or preparing to talk to your boss? Jessica Plocher, a psychiatric nurse practitioner who works for Philadelphia Health Services, says that when stressful situations arise, your body can be the first to react.

According to Plocher,“Stressful situations can trigger a multitude of physical responses including sweating, flushing, shaking, dry mouth, restlessness, shortness of breath or tightness in the chest, light-headedness, frequent urination or diarrhea, increased heart rate.”

So if you do find yourself sweating through your blazer before a big presentation or your heart feels like it’s going to come out of your chest during a fight with a friend, it’s your body letting you know you need to calm down.

2. You’ve been losing hair, weight and sleep

When life gets stressful, it can be easy to ignore the signs your body is giving you. In return, our bodies suffer for it. Stress can cause you to stay awake thinking about your problems, reduce your appetite and cause poor nutrition.

“Long-term stress is associated with physical symptoms such as hair loss, gastrointestinal problems, weight gain or loss, sleep disturbance and fatigue,” says Plocher.

Making sure that you address your stress when you see signs of it, especially ones like drastic weight and sleep loss, is important so that it does not turn into a broader problem that may affect your life in different areas.

Related: How to Deal with Stress & Anxiety in Your 20s

3. You just can’t concentrate

"If getting through your calculus homework or focusing on your biology lab has been getting harder each time you have to do it, , then your body is definitely trying to tell you there’s something else you need to address before you can study.

Plocher says, “Experiencing poor concentration, memory problems, indecision and mood lability is common.”

Mood lability is another term for mood swings, which can affect your ability to focus on what’s important by taking you from drastic highs and ultimate lows in terms of your mood.

When little things like deciding what you want to eat for dinner, or reading a news article seem impossible because your mind is all over the place, then you may be stressed.

4. You’ve been diagnosed with other illnesses

Just like losing weight and hair, your body can give you signs of stress in other ways too. If you’ve been making more frequent trips to the doctor and getting diagnosed with anything from the flu to mood disorders, then it could be your stress affecting your immune system and mental health.

Plocher says, “Chronic stress is also associated with the development of anxiety and mood disorders, increased substance use, frequent illness and cardiovascular disease.”

Being stressed seems like a natural part of life, but ongoing stress can cause major problems for you and your body.

“In my opinion, the signs our bodies give us signaling stress are not so much ignored as misinterpreted,” says Plocher.  “Increasing understanding of the relationship between mind and body and the impact of stress on physical and mental health is essential in mitigating stress, relieving symptoms, and improving self-care.”

If you see your body exhibiting any of these signs, find out if your school has a counseling center, or mental health support groups for students under stress. If you want help outside of the school environment, apps like “Calm” can walk you through mindful activities to reduce your stress.. As always, check in with your doctor to see how they can help you cope with stress.

Here at Her Campus, we’re all about highlighting aspirational women who have become influential forces in the world, proving that you can do anything you set your mind to. But what about the women who are changing lives and being total #girlbosses while they’re still in college? To honor those amazing women, there’s the 22 Under 22 Most Inspiring College Women. 2017 nominations for these spots are now open, but here’s a look at what past honorees have achieved to give you an idea of who fits this accolade best!

In 2016, the 22 young women selected ranged from poets to aspiring surgeons, and fought for causes like cancer treatment and foreign literacy. On average, the entire group was around 20 years old and founded a total of 19 organizations. Is your mouth wide open in awe yet?

We're looking for 2017 honorees who demonstrate leadership, excel academically, are doing big things in an area that’s important to them, and who have ambitious goals for their future. The only way the rest of us can achieve our dreams is by knowing that it’s possible for other girls to find success too, so why not nominate yourself or a deserving friend for one of the slots?

“Attitude and patience are key,” said Julia Richardson, a 2016 honoree who aspires to complete a 10K race even with an amputated limb. “Your attitude will truly make or break everything, and it’s incredibly rare for something amazing to happen overnight. It takes hard work, dedication and staying strong through the failures.”

2016 honoree Sara Li also has a go-getter attitude for achieving personal aims. “If I had to wait for permission every time I got an idea, I’d never get anywhere,” she said. “No matter how unrealistic or bold or insane your goal is, go now.”

Women Are Dramatically Underrepresented in Surgery & Here's Why

0
0

It’s safe to say that being a doctor is up there as one of the most influential professions one can pursue, but has the status of women in the medical field ever crossed your mind? For first year UCSF medical student Carlene Partow, the need to highlight a fairly unknown disparity in the medical field was enough for her to create a revolution exploring this divide.

“Dr. Nancy Ascher, the first female chair of the Department of Surgery at UCSF, and pioneer of solid organ transplantation in HIV positive patients, reached out to me to assist with the women in surgery group at UCSF,” Partow explained to Her Campus. “Upon conducting my research in preparation for the meeting, I was astounded to discover the number of women surgeons of color is so low it is unreported, 14 percent of board certified plastic surgeons are women, less than 5 percent of board certified cardiac surgeons are women, and 6 percent of board certified neurological surgeons are women, a number that will only increase to 12 percent by 2045.”

Partow found the prediction of female neurological surgeons increasing so little particularly disheartening because of her own career aspirations and the fact that she had never considered it being an issue. Given her involvement as a leader of her university’s Hopkins Feminists and history of shadowing a female neurosurgeon, Partow wondered how someone as well informed as she was could still be unaware of the gender divide.

“I decided immediately it was time for a revolution,” Partow said. “However, you cannot fix a problem you do not know exists, so before we can start our nationwide movement to improve the state of women in surgery, we need to raise awareness about this important problem.”

Partow, a 2016 graduate of Johns Hopkins University, has joined together with her friend and current JHU student Alizay Jalisi to host a livestreamed panel discussion called “The State of Women in Surgery.” Taking place on the JHU campus on Monday, April 17, the event will feature several female professionals in the surgical field who have ties to the medical programs at Johns Hopkins.

“Our Facebook event has reached almost nine thousand people so far,” Partow said. “Most importantly though, we have begun to receive messages…regarding interest in our livestreamed panel from surgeons all over the country.”

We have no problem admitting that powerful things happen when women come together, and Partow and Jalisi’s event is no exception. If you’re on a pre-med path, why not tune into the panel at 6 EST for an empowering insight into closing the gender gap in the surgical field?

“The culture within medical schools as it exists now is not conducive to encouraging women into surgical specialties,” Partow shared. “It is time that we join together [as] allies and sisters in the struggle alike, and start this revolution, not just for our own personal gain, but for our patients.”

Check out the “The State of Women in Surgery” Facebook page for more information!

Starbucks Might Be Launching a Unicorn Frappuccino

0
0

Rumors are circulating about a new beverage Starbucks might be launching this month—a sparkly Unicorn Frappuccino.

PopSugar reports Starbucks has yet to confirm the rumors, but a few Reddit users have provided what appears to be photographic evidence. Danielle Tullo of Cosmopolitan gathered all the potential clues pointing to a unicorn drink, and honestly, they're pretty convincing.

On Wednesday, a Reddit user posted a photo of a shaker full of periwinkle sprinkles labeled “Unicorn Dust” with the caption “Unicorn Frapp topping.” A commenter replied to the post suggesting the drink is supposed to launch in seven days.

The same user, hellabummed, posted a picture of a pink and blue drink with the caption, “Unicorn Frappuccino 2017.” Then another user posted a photo of a mysterious bag of pink powder whose label reads “Do Not Open Until 4/17.”

The rumor then made its way over to Instagram, where a user posted a picture of the alleged new drink covered in what looks like edible glitter, according to Cosmo.

PopSugar reports some people claiming to be Starbucks baristas have even shared details about how the Frappuccino tastes and how it’s made. One wrote that it tastes like "tropical Skittles," which might be a good thing, but doesn't really sound like it. Another person claimed the recipe may be a creme Frappuccino base with mango syrup and white mocha. That also sounds...questionable. But hey, do it for the 'gram?

A third alleged barista named Laya shared a photo of a sign that looks to be advertising the new drink with the caption, “Can somebody please tell me what the f*** is going on?” The post has since been removed.

Guess we'll just have to see if this drink is real or just an elaborate, two-week-late April Fools prank. And even if it is a prank, maybe Sbux will see how excited we all are and decide to actually create it!

4 Reasons Why You Should Masturbate Regularly

There’s no doubt about it—there’s a stigma attached to talking about masturbation, especially when it comes to women. But there’s really nothing wrong with masturbating. In fact, there are so many benefits to learning how to explore your body on your own. Whether you masturbate regularly or just from time to time is really up to you, but either way, you’re likely to experience a lot of positive physical and mental effects if you try it out. What’s so great about touching yourself? Read on to find out.

1. Masturbation allows you to learn what you like sexually.

Think of masturbation as a time when you can figure out what gets your blood pumping, what works and what doesn’t work. Since you’re not working to perform for someone else, or worried about how what you’re doing affects anyone but yourself, you get a chance to really connect with what turns you on, what causes you to orgasm and what feels pleasurable.

Rachel Born, a health educator in women’s sexuality, says that masturbation can be a great way to figure out what you like, both in terms of physical acts and your sexual fantasies.

“You can fantasize and actually feel your thoughts manifest into sexual reactions, which is very powerful,” says Born. “It’s great to have a strong sense of fantasy or imagination which you developed through masturbation.”

By practicing your fantasies and figuring out what turns you on during masturbation, you’re putting yourself in a good position to know what you might like with a partner. Because masturbation is so personal, you don’t have to worry about other people’s judgment as you explore your fantasies, and you can even use it to figure out your sexuality.

“When I was first learning about sexuality and determining if I liked men, women, both or none, it really helped me explore which feelings I have,” says Marissa Campbell, a junior at Framingham State University.

It can also be a great way to practice fantasies your partner may not share, if you’re with someone whose sexual desires differ from your own. If you’re hot and bothered by the idea of role-playing and your partner isn’t, try imaging yourself in a sexual role-playing scenario while masturbating. That way, you can still enjoy your fantasy without requiring a partner to compromise during sex.

2. It can be really empowering to be alone with your body.

Because masturbation tends to be a solo act, it can serve as a way to get in your necessary alone time.

“College is go-go-go, it's really fast-paced,” says Born. “There's no chance to just breathe. When you masturbate, it's almost like you carve out a moment of your day when all you do is breathe and hopefully, experience pleasure.”

She stresses that you don’t have to masturbate regularly, but that you can do it as often as you’d like. And there’s no pressure to orgasm. The best thing about masturbating alone is that there’s no performance anxiety—you’re just here to please yourself. While that may seem selfish, many women find it really freeing.

“I learned that there's no reason to be ashamed about sexuality,” says Jenna*, a senior at James Madison University. “I can honestly say that I am now fully comfortable with my body and the difference I've seen in myself is so amazing.”

Christina Spaccavento, a sex therapist and relationship specialist, says that masturbating “can boost your self-esteem by helping you to enjoy and connect with your body and assist with feeling more empowered, sexually confident and in control of your sexual experience.”

If you’re worried that masturbating feels selfish, think of it as a feminist act: as a way to take back your own body. Women often don’t get the chance to take ownership of their own bodies, and masturbating gives you a way to do that. It’s just a bonus if it makes you take time out of your day to actually relax.

3. It has positive physical and mental health benefits.

Not feeling tired? Try masturbating. Feeling too stressed? Try masturbating. Got a headache? Try masturbating. The list goes on and on.

“When we have an orgasm during masturbation, our body excretes feel-good hormones and chemicals that help us to relax,” says Spaccavento. “And for some women, the rhythmic contractions of the uterus during an orgasm can help with the reduction of period pain.”

Relief from period pain? Sign us up! Seriously, masturbation has a multitude of physical and mental health benefits. If you’re feeling busy and stressed, it forces you to take the time to relax, be alone with your body and focus on yourself. It can physically make you feel less stressed because of hormones, but don’t ignore the mental part: sometimes, you just need to step away from daily chaos and be alone.

“I often feel a lot less tension after I masturbate, and overall it improves my disposition,” says Hannah Levin, a junior at Framingham State University. “I have anxiety, and after I masturbate I often feel a lot more relaxed.”

Masturbation can also make you feel tired if you’re restless. “It’s a great way to distress and fall asleep,” says Angela*, a senior at Westfield State University. “I used to masturbate at least once a day, usually before bed. It helps a lot. And with headaches. It cures boredom, too.”

If you’re struggling with past sexual trauma, masturbating could also serve as a safer way to re-explore your body. However, as Born warns, “If someone is masturbating and feeling turned on, which could be very vulnerable for them, it could re-trigger trauma. It's really important that if someone knows they have sexual trauma in the past, they should contact a professional.”

She suggests survivors of sexual trauma work with a professional sex therapist. Working with a professional, a trauma survivor can determine if masturbation is a good way for them to work through what happened and take back ownership of their body and their sexuality.

With all those potential positive side effects, what’s not to love about giving your body a little extra TLC?

4. It can be something new to try with your partner.

Not sure what to do with a partner? Try out mutual masturbation. This is a great option if you’re looking for something new and exciting, or if you’re unhappy with some of the sex acts you’ve been doing as a couple.

“It is not something you have to do alone,” says Marissa. “Many partners enjoy mutual masturbation.”

If your partner is up for it, mutual masturbation can be a great way to connect with one another and create fantasies you may not be able to do in real life, for whatever reason. It gives you an opportunity to learn how your partner enjoys pleasing themselves in private, and to explore mutual fantasies and develop a strong sense of imagination together.

Masturbation has long been shrouded by a lot of myths, especially when it comes to women masturbating. But it doesn’t have to be that way! You should be proud to masturbate and learn what you like and dislike sexually. Just make sure you’re being safe. According to Born, even if you’re using sex toys only by yourself, make sure to use condoms on them, because they can be made out of materials which haven’t been tested for their effects on the human body. Don’t feel pressured to masturbate a certain way, or to masturbate often—just do what makes you feel good.

Robert Pattinson Isn't Totally Opposed To The Idea Of A 'Twilight' Reboot

Reboots are trending and have revitalized our fave throwback shows (think: Gilmore Girls) but the ‘Twilight’ phenomenon is relatively new. It’s nearly been a decade since the first installment was released in theaters but Twihards are still alive and kicking. Despite the lapse in time, the resident vampire on the block, Robert Pattinson, aka Edward Cullen, is reportedly onboard for a potential ‘Twilight’ reboot.

In a recent interview with Yahoo! Movies, Pattinson teased the possibility of a ‘Twilight’ reunion.

“I’m always kind of curious,” Pattinson said. “Anything where there’s a mass audience—or seemingly an audience for it—I always like the idea of subverting people’s expectations. There could be some radical way of doing it, which could be quite fun. It’s always difficult when there’s no source material.”

If there were to be a reboot in the works, the team would have to get support from author Stephenie Meyer to continue the story beyond the series of novels. Tbh, we’d be satisfied with just watching the romantic highlights.

While he hasn’t confirmed nor denied whether he would reprise his starring role if the reboot became a reality, it would be amazing to see him on the silver screen again.

In the meantime, I’ll have to catch him in his upcoming role in the period drama, “The Lost City of Z,” in order to curb my anticipation.
