What To Do When Your Body Image is Affecting Your Sex Life

Hooking up is complicated enough to begin with. Add in insecurities about the way you look, and your sex life can definitely take a hit. We all get self-conscious, but if body image woes are seriously affecting your sex life, it may be time to make some changes. We talked to Dr. Ramani Durvasula, psychologist and author of Should I Stay or Should I Go: Surviving a Relationship With a Narcissist and You Are WHY You Eat: Change Your Food Attitude Change Your Life to find out how!

1. Practice self-love

It’s unlikely that you will enjoy yourself during sex if you’re preoccupied at all, let alone distracted by negative thoughts. Loving your body isn’t always easy, but it’s important to feel comfortable and confident in your own skin. Luckily, practicing self-love is as easy as it is necessary. Try writing positive affirmations on sticky notes and attaching them to your bedroom mirror. Or, every time you feel the urge to critique your reflection, give yourself a compliment instead.

“Catch yourself anytime you say, ‘this makes me look fat’—and then reshape the statement,” says Dr. Durvasula. “Being aware of these self-statements can be step one in changing them. Also, pay attention to negative self-talk when you are actually making healthy choices (e.g. when the dessert menu comes around monitor words like ‘the last thing someone like me needs is that’).” Focusing on what makes you beautiful and unique will help banish those silly insecurities!

2. Talk to your partner

The more comfortable you feel with your partner, the less you’ll think about the way you look. Try having a conversation with him or her before you start hooking up to ensure that you are both ready to move forward. “Be open,” says Dr. Durvasula. “If your partner is a decent human being they will hear it. Take ownership, and be honest and direct (e.g. sometimes I have difficulty opening up sexually because I do not feel good about my body). This does two things: it may help your partner feel more connected, especially if your hesitation made your partner question themselves. It also creates a greater intimacy because you are sharing a vulnerability. If your partner mocks you or leaves you feeling worse…show [them] the door—you don't need that.”

Don’t be afraid to keep the conversation going during sex as well. Tell your partner what you like and what feels good, and don’t be afraid to suggest alternatives if he or she is making you self-conscious in any way. Having a dialogue during sex doesn’t have to feel forced—talking to your partner is sexy, and it’s the perfect way to learn what turns one another on (and off!).

3. Boost your confidence

There are many easy ways to kick-start your confidence in the bedroom. If you’re insecure about your mid-section for example, you can treat yourself to some babydoll lingerie that makes you more sure of yourself. Not only will you look and feel amazing, but your partner will enjoy it too! Another tip is to put on music while you’re hooking up. The right playlist can really set the mood. In fact, listening to stimulating music is proven to do more than help ease an anxious mind. According to a study commissioned by Spotify, 40 percent of people think listening to music is actually more arousing than touch during sex. Finally, if it makes you feel more comfortable, you can dim the lights the first time (or few times) you have sex with a new partner. Again, this makes for a more romantic setting while also helping to calm any nerves and curb self-doubt.

“Use lighting that works for you,” says Dr. Durvasula. “Candlelight is sensual—everyone looks good in it and it adds a nice tone to sex and intimacy. Wear lingerie that may be sexy but also allows you to feel confident. Do the things you like to or may be willing to try that don't play as strongly on body issues (talk dirty, try interesting positions). Make it more than just about intercourse or orgasm—play up the foreplay—few people say no to a nice and sexy massage.” A relaxed body should put your mind at ease, too!

4. Get to know your body

You should know your body better than anyone. If you feel uncomfortable during sex, practicing self-pleasure may be the answer. “Get into the habit of masturbation yourself or with toys,” says Dr. Durvasula. “It puts you in better possession of your body and what works for you [and] makes you a more confident lover.” While it may be difficult to get alone time in college if you have roommates, it’s a great thing to do when you can find privacy.

Masturbation is somewhat of a taboo subject for women, but it shouldn’t be! “It is healthy,” says Dr. Durvasula. It “reminds us that our bodies are capable of pleasure and that it is often our own minds that get in the way (e.g. body image issues) of having that with someone else.” Once you get past any initial embarrassment, you’ll be one step closer to fully embracing your sexuality.

5. Consult a professional

If you’re really struggling with your body image, you may want to think about talking to someone. Your school’s health and counseling centers are great places to start. If necessary, you may then be referred to an outside therapist who can better address your specific needs. “Consider therapy with a licensed mental health practitioner,” says Dr. Durvasula. “Body image issues run wide and deep, and the guidance of a therapist can help [you] understand these issues and how they are impacting [your] sexuality.” If you’re on the fence about consulting a professional, consider whether body image issues are “impeding your relationship, making it very psychologically difficult or physically uncomfortable to have sex, leading to behaviors (e.g. extreme diets, starvation, overexercise, binge/purge) that are dangerous for your health, or [if] the thoughts about body image are preoccupying your time and your mind,” says Dr. Durvasula. If so, then it may be time to seek out help.

Dr. Durvasula also recommends engaging in activities that are body positive, such as healthy eating, exercise, meditation and getting enough sleep. “When a woman takes care of herself, the rest often follows,” she says. If you’d like to work on your diet or exercise habits, find out if your college offers group fitness classes or one-on-one physical training sessions. There may also be a dietician on campus who you can talk to. Whether it’s about taking better care of your mental health or focusing on your physical health, making changes over time can help you feel more self-assured in all aspects of your life.

Sex is obviously an extremely intimate act, and with this intimacy comes the possibility of feeling exposed. You are your own worst critic, though, and it’s important to remember that your partner is a little too busy to judge the way you look (which is beautiful!). But building self-confidence and body positivity takes time. Luckily, there are strategies you can practice and resources you can utilize to help you on your journey toward loving the way you look and feel. With these suggestions in mind, you’re on your way to a healthier body image and a happier sex life!

Your Hungover Self Wishes She Looked as Good as Kristen Stewart & Stella Maxwell

Sunday mornings are for swearing you’ll never drink as much as you did the night before, eating the leftover pizza that magically ended up occupying the other side of your bed, and staying in bed until one of your hangover companions is able to drag you out of bed for brunch (and more food!). The hangover outfit that ensues is truly an art form. You strive to strike a look that says “I only look sloppy because I had so much fun last night,” not “this is my go-to look.” It can be hard to do. You have to match your comfiest clothes with your makeup and clutch from last night, and tie the whole outfit together with a stereotypical pair of sunglasses.

Do you know who has the whole hangover outfit mastered? Kristen Stewart and her girlfriend Stella Maxwell. The pair evidently celebrated Kristen's 27th birthday the right way, but instead of looking like a couple of slobs like the rest of us, they decided to match in an undeniably cute outfit (why bother to create two outfits when you can get away wearing the same one?). Dressed in crop tops and tube socks, each girl opted for one “athletic” item and one more stylish one (maybe from the night before?) with Stewart in a hoodie and jean shorts and Maxwell in a leather jacket and running shorts. Both completed the look with, you guessed it… sunglasses. Classic move.

Personally, I would never leave the house hungover in a crop top…. no one needs to see how much beer and greasy brunch food bloats me. However, taking a cue from Stewart and Maxwell, here are some adorable finds for your next hungover morning:

1. Wildfox Couture Worth It Tee ($68 at Revolve

The shirt says it all… so you don’t have to.

2. ASOS Oval Sunglasses ($18.50 at ASOS

The bigger the better, not only for the sunglasses needed to hide your tired AF eyes, but for the size of your brunch plate.

3. Velvet Floral Sweatpants ($19.90 at Forever 21)

These sweats are so on trend, people will think that you’re more fashion-forward than you are hungover.

4. Jac Vanek Never Drinking Chambray Shirt ($44 at Dolls Kill)

No, really, you swear you’re not ever going to…. (at least until next weekend).

5. Black (Minus The) Leather Zip Moto Jacket ($79.99 at Express

Take a cue from Stella and stay in your jacket from the night before!

6. Sporty Ankle Tube Socks ($6 at TopShop)

Complete your look with tube socks, à la Kristella (I had to).

5 Ways to Do Festival Season on a Budget

$

Even if you haven’t been to Coachella before, you probably know what it is. And if you know what it is then you probably also know that this celeb-infested, desert-located, Instagram-worthy festival is over for the year. However, there is no need to develop post-festival FOMO because there are plenty more summer music festivals where you can rock the flower crown and choker combo that you have been dying to show off.

And while you totally want to get as much festival exposure as possible this summer (for musical enrichment purposes, of course), it isn’t really realistic to go and spend almost $200 on a manicure for said festival. That’s why we have five tips that will help you rule the festival for a whole lot less!

1. Choose festivals wisely

So many music festivals, so little money. Every festival has something different to offer from the line-up to the overall vibe. It can be tempting to want to go to any and every festival within a 50 mile radius, but that is definitely not the way to do festival season (unless you are the Jenner sisters). It is important to determine which aspects of festival life are the most important to you and narrow down your choices from there. If you are into major headliners, Governors Ball might be for you. For the smaller festival lovers, Firefly Music Festival in Dover, Delaware, would be a great investment. It is possible to attend any festival on a budget, but it’s definitely harder to budget for some than others. While it might be fun to go to multiple festivals, come fall a three-day ticket to Bonnaroo probably won’t sound as good as being able to pay your rent.

"As a lover of music, there are so many concerts I want to go to this summer but unfortunately, due to my excessive amount of parking tickets and credit card bills, that won’t be possible," says Tara Kerrigan, a senior at Harper College. "Therefore, I chose Lollapalooza and spent $275 on a three-day ticket. Yes, going to other festivals would be fun but it isn’t worth putting myself into a deep hole of debt."

2. Create your look for less

While it would be cool to show up to your music festival of choice dressed like Taylor Swift, she more than likely has an extra million dollars, or two, lying around that the rest of us just don’t. Realistically, you probably have enough cute and comfortable clothes to last you a weekend so buying new ones isn’t completely necessary. That being said, there are ways to get a festival chic look on a budget. Stores that you know and love like H&M and Forever 21 have clothing lines specifically tailored to festival attendees. And the best part about them is that the prices are fabulous! Never let outfit issues prevent you from attending your favorite fest.

3. Carpool and co-camp

While it is important to attend the festival with your squad for Snapchat purposes, it is also one of the best ways to reduce the overall cost. The average general admission ticket for a music festival is anywhere from $200-400 and that does not even begin to cover the various other expenses. Many festivals charge for parking, but with one or two cars, the cost is much more manageable because you can split it among your friends. An added bonus is that you won’t have to play “Where’s Waldo” with your friends in the parking lot because you will all be together.

"Part of the fun is the adventure of getting there," says Paige Carpenter, a sophomore at the University of Arizona. "My favorite way is by road trip. Load up your car, all of your best friends and blast music all the way to Indio. It’s cheap and you get to see part of the country along the way."

As far as accommodations go, whether you are camping, glamping or renting a house, it is helpful to get as many friends together to cut down on costs. And who wouldn’t want a weekend long sleepover with their besties?

4. Volunteer

It might sound strange to volunteer at an event that you are trying to attend for fun, but hear us out because it is possibly one of the easiest ways to earn your way into the festival. Usually, larger festivals need all the extra hands they can get. If you check out the official website for your festival a few months before the date, there are usually requests for volunteers. Volunteers typically get pretty sweet rewards like free tickets or at the very least, an awesome discount.

5. Find cheaper tickets

If your budgeting skills are on point and you managed to recoup the money you lost over spring break and save for a summer festival, then kudos! However, most of us probably don’t fall into that category. No worries, there is still a way to get an affordable ticket without destroying your bank account—and that is eBay! Weeks and even days before a festival, there are people who are desperately trying to sell their tickets for whatever reason. Buying on eBay can allow you to get previously sold out tickets or even find cheaper ones. eBay is also a super safe option because it uses PayPal to ensure buyer protection. While this is more of a last minute approach, you can end up with a great deal.

And if you don’t get to go this year, it is always beneficial to keep your eyes open for any great giveaways for festivals coming up in the next year.

The memories that you create with your friends at a festival are invaluable, but not valuable enough to blow all of the money in your back account over the course of a weekend. Keep these tips in mind and you can be the reigning festival queen for years to come.

These 2 Actors From '13 Reasons Why' Had an Adorable Spa Night Together

If you've seen the breakout Netflix hit show 13 Reasons Why, you already know that Jessica and Ryan aren't exactly BFFLs. Against the backdrop of Hannah Baker's mysterious suicide, Jessica Davis and Ryan Shaver are introduced as two students dealing with the events of the series. In real life though, Alisha Doe (Jessica), and Tommy Dorfman (Ryan) are super close, and recently chose to spend their free time away from set in the best way possible—by having a spa night.

On his Instagram story, Tommy posted this candid pic of Alisha trying not to burst out laughing with her sheet mask on. If she's anything like me, she probably started cackling anyway!

We were even blessed with a super-cute shot of Tommy and his sheet mask. Sadly, he didn't spill what brand he and Alisha were using.

Either way, this makes me want to pop on a face mask myself and invite my friends over for Netflix and tea.

Olivia Pope Was Almost Played By A White Actress Because That's What ABC Wanted

Does Scandal even exist without Kerry Washington? Once upon a time, there was a chance she wouldn't play the show's main character, Olivia Pope. ABC originally had a long list of white actresses selected for the role, and the network's first choice was former Nashville star Connie Britton.

In honor of Scandal's 100th episode, the cast and crew discussed the show's history with The Hollywood Reporter. Casting director Linda Lowy remembers, "The network was reading us their top choices, and it was Connie and all white women. I panicked. Somebody finally piped up, 'We're going to have to redo this list.'"

Washington admits that Olivia Pope would have been a great role for Britton, but creator Shonda Rhimes was not completely satisfied with the preliminary casting choices. She wanted to honor the story of the black woman the show is based on: Judy Smith, a Washington, D.C., fixer. When she was told Scandal would be a perfect match for Britton, Rhimes replied, "It would be, except Olivia Pope is black."

She continues, "Nothing felt more important than the sense of outsiderness. I didn't know that there hadn't been a drama series with a leading black woman for 37 years." Hence the ultimate choice of Kerry Washington for the part.

Lowy gushes, "It was Kerry from the moment I took her to meet Shonda."

I, for one, can't imagine the show without her.

This French Artist Turned Her Pimples Into Art for the Best Reason

Embracing our so-called "imperfections" is a big part of the body positivity movement. While that is something we should all be doing, I'll admit, it's a difficult thing to do. Especially when it comes to this little thing called acne (aka ruiner of lives and destroyer of dreams).

If you've ever suffered from chronic acne, or just woken up in the morning with a pimple the size of Rhode Island inhabiting your face, then you'll know that embracing it is the last thing we want to do. We pull and pop them, slather them with blemish-fighting toners and medicines, and spend way too much time attempting to hide them away under thick layers of concealer.

But French artist Marie-Anne Tutti decided to take a different approach. Instead of concealing her blemishes, the 25-year-old children's book author is using art to show that imperfections are beautiful.

Tutti got the idea when looking at her blemishes in the mirror, and noticed that they resembled the Big Dipper. "I thought it would be fun to connect the dots,” she told Cosmo. “I found the result very pretty and I wanted to do it again.”

The result is actually quite cool, and shows that even though society (and especially beauty companies) wants us to cover up our imperfections, it doesn't mean we have to!

To get the look, Tutti uses silver and blue eyeliner to literally just connect the dots in whatever patterns she sees, and completes it with mathcing eyeliner on her eyes. Doing this gave Tutti "a sense of control over her skin’s appearance—and a way to embrace its natural state." It just so happens that many of the patterns Tutti finds look like constellations, giving her a literal "galaxy" look.

There's such a huge stigma that tells us acne is something to be ashamed of (why I don't know, because there's usually not much anyone can do to change it). While acne is usually associated with those dreaded adolescent years, it affects adults too, which makes lots of people feel like they have to cover up their skin in order to look "normal."

Our appearance, and especially our skin, does not define who we are. Instead of focusing on covering up what we consider to be "bad," what if we all embraced our natural look, including our blemishes? That would be liberating.

What to Expect From Your First SoulCycle Class

This article has been syndicated to Her Campus from Ampersand, an InfluenceHer Collective member. Read the full post here.

Last weekend, I reached my peak state of basicness: I went to a SoulCycle class. I know, hard to believe it’s taken me this long, but my curiosity finally got the best of me and I wanted to see what the hype was (Shoutout to Aminah for taking me, you’re the bomb.com). Well, everything you’ve heard about it is true and I get why people are obsessed with it because SoulCycle is absolutely LIT.

SoulCycle is more than just an exercise class, it’s a true experience. That sounds super dramatic and ridiculous, but it couldn’t be more true. It’s not just a spin class. You may roll your eyes at “finding your SOUL” while riding a stationary bike, but trust me, you have to be there to believe it. Yes, it’s an extremely hard workout (you will sweat A LOT) but you actually do walk out of there feeling incredibly empowered.

So if you’re even remotely considering SoulCycle, just sign up and give it a try. And just so you have a head’s up, here’s what to expect from your first class.

Before Your Class

Alright, so you decided you’re going to try this whole SoulCycle thing out–now what? Thankfully, I had Aminah to walk me through the sign-up process because it’s kind of intense. Let me break it down:

  1. Go onto www.soul-cycle.com and sign up as a new rider (basic information, email, password, etc.)
  2. To get the new rider discount ($20/first class), the best way is to call the studio where you want to go and tell them that you’re totally new to this whole SoulCycle thing. They’re very nice and accommodating. They’ll ask you for your credit card and add the new rider discount on your account.
  3. Okay, now pay attention. Every Monday at NOON, that’s when the weekly sign-ups start. So even if you want to go on a Saturday, you have to sign up Monday, starting at noon. And depending on how popular your instructor is, spaces fill up fast (seriously, it was the most stressful 10 seconds of my life, followed by that time I had to buy pre-sale Drake tickets), so make sure you’re logged in and ready to go. Just click on a bike marked by a number (they show you a map of the studio), and you’re registered to ride.

The really nice thing about SoulCycle is that they send you an email immediately after about what to expect/how to prepare, but here are some other things to keep in mind.

  • Pack your bag: Especially if you’re going prolong your basicness by going to brunch afterwards (guilty), bring a change of clothes because you will get really sweaty. Other things to bring: socks (you need them for the shoes they give you), water bottle (a MUST) and towel (although they have them for you as well).
  • What to wear: Capris/leggings or shorts that won’t ride up/chafe. (Really recommend super breathable leggings for ladies). A workout tank or t-shirt is fine, although most people (myself included) just end up wearing their sports bras (did I mention you sweat a lot?). You can wear whatever shoes you want to the studio (just remember socks!!) because they give you special shoes, as mentioned before.
  • H Y D R A T E: Yes, you have a place for a water bottle on your bike, but I definitely didn’t drink enough water beforehand, which definitely did not help me. Drinks lots and lots of water the day/morning before.
  • Eat a little something: This isn’t something like “oh I never eat before I go on a run.” You definitely need something in your stomach before you go. Doesn’t have to be a lot, but you really don’t want to pass out during your first SoulCycle class. My class was at 10:45 a.m., so about an hour before I had an apple with peanut butter and a KIND bar, and I felt good.
  • Bring a friend: It definitely helped that I went with Aminah (who’s been before) so I could ask her a bunch of questions/calm my nerves, but if you don’t know anyone who’s gone before, bring a friend so you can try it together! I definitely was a little nervous leading up to it, so it was nice to have someone to go with.

Jude Law Will Play Young Dumbledore in the 'Fantastic Beasts' Sequel

After much speculation about who would play young Dumbledore in the Fastastic Beasts sequel, we finally have an answer: Jude Law.

Variety confirmed the news this morning, and we couldn't be happier. While Hugo Weaving or Michael Sheen would've done a good job, Law just has a Dumbledore-esque vibe, don't you think? We're definitely expecting the sequel to show us more of what happened between Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald (played by Johnny Depp), a relationship which was touched on in the Harry Potter films and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The second installment in the Fantastic Beasts series hits theaters November 16, 2018.

Netflix has released the first minute of Orange Is The New Black's upcoming fifth season, the events of which take place over the course of just three days, and it's CRAZY already. We suggest you watch for yourself.

The riot seen in the clip immediately follows (spoiler alert!) Poussey's death, with the inmates gaining control of the prison and a gun. Will Daya shoot? Will Piper and Alex get in on the action? We can't wait until June 9 to find out.

Things at Litchfield Penitentiary are getting heated—and we're sure there'll be more madness to come.

You've Got to See the Relationship Drama Caused by Mario Badescu Skin Care

It's no secret that Mario Badescu carries some of the best skin care products around. From the super-powerful silver powder to the almost miraculous drying lotion, any skin type can find solace in Mario's loving embrace. Just don't let your boyfriend know about your skin care affair, as one girl learned the hard way.

"Who tf is Mario Badescu," the first text reads, followed by, "Actually don't answer. I hope he makes you happy."

Well that escalated quickly. What ever happened to asking questions, or running a quick Google search? I actually don't know what brought this up in the first place. Either way, in its typical fashion, the internet is going absolutely apeshit for this case of mistaken identity.

A little drying lotion should clear this misunderstanding right up!

You Won't Believe What Ashley Tisdale Once Wore on the Red Carpet

We all look back on our fashion choices from our younger days and shudder with embarrassment (I mean, why did my parents even let me out of the house sometimes?), but it can be even worse for celebs who are always in the spotlight. Imagine thinking you're rocking your outfit at a red carpet event, then looking at the pictures years later and laughing at yourself for the choices you made. Well, this is one struggle Ashley Tisdale knows all too well!

During her time playing Maddie Fitzpatrick on The Suite Life of Zac and Cody, Ashley's red carpet outfits typically were meant to stay true to her character's fashion statements on the show, Tisdale told People. This meant for some extremely questionable outfits—but hey, it was the early 2000s, after all.

Her biggest fashion "oh no!" moment was made on the red carpet premiere of The Incredibles in 2004. Her outfit for that event definitely turned some heads! "I wore this really weird pink camo skirt and this pink furry thing, I don’t even know what it was, but I said, ‘Ooh, put me in it!’" Ashley told People. "And instead of wearing it like you would normally wear it, I was like, ‘I am going to do it have one of my arms out and have it going across my body.’ It was the weirdest thing. At that point, you just have to laugh at yourself!"

Corinne Olympios Is Pretty Sure She'll Be On 'Bachelor in Paradise' Even Though She's Dating Someone

Team Corn fans, rejoice! It appears that we haven't seen the last of Corinne Olympios (and we probably never will, tbh). E! News reports that our favorite Bach villain may be bringing her crazy antics to the Bachelor in Paradise stage, and we're absolutely pumped…and slightly confused, considering it sounds like she's dating someone.

E! News spoke exclusively with our favorite reality TV star, and the possibility of her joining the spinoff ranks sounds promising. "I mean, I'm still not sure yet. Most likely, yes. So not 100 percent locked in yet," explained Corinne when she was asked about starring on the show. So we're basically getting "hard yes" vibes from this info.

Although it sounds pretty likely that she'll be joining the cast, Corinne also seems to have a good thing going with a man who has yet to be identified.

"I'm not ready to come out to the world about him yet," says Corinne. "It's still in the early stages. I don't know what's going to happen but we're vibing really nicely and everything's going well and I just want it to stay that way."

We're glad to hear that things are going well, but we're not too sure how starring on the spinoff series with a relationship back home will go. If one thing is for sure, it's that if Corinne does BIP, this season will definitely be one to remember.

Nick Viall & Vanessa Grimaldi Might Not Want A Televised Wedding

If you were looking forward to the possibility of televised nuptials between Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimaldi, the chances seem to be quite slim, Bachelor Nation. In a Facebook Live interview with Extra's Mario Lopez, Viall sounded less than thrilled at the thought of participating in more reality TV festivities, especially when it comes to getting married

"I mean I've never really planned on doing any of this... they just kind of happened. My guess is I'll probably start steering away from the reality TV world," said Viall when Lopez asked if DWTS was the last reality show for him. "I certainly think I'm done in terms of any show about my love life."

Lopez, the hero that he is, pressed further about whether there will be a televised wedding or not. "There's always a possibility. The thing about the wedding shows is that there's a lot of Bachelor engaged couples—they don't always do weddings," explained Viall. Fair enough!

"Vanessa and I are just focused on our relationship," he continued. "When we decide it's time for us to take that next step, we're just going to plan a wedding, and if the show wants us, great, and if not… We're not really focused on whether it's going to be televised or not. I've been really grateful for my opportunities but I see myself probably getting away from the reality TV way of life."

Although this news may come as a disappointment for some, we can totally see where Nick is coming from. As a man who's been in the spotlight for quite some time, we'd want some privacy too if we were in his shoes. Here's to hoping, right?

'Manchester by the Sea' Allegedly Inspired This Couple's Plan to Kill Their Son

The Oscar-winning movie Manchester by the Sea, starring Casey Affleck, seems to have inspired a New York couple's plan to murder their son, the Associated Press reports.

In the film, Affleck plays a father who—spoiler alert—accidentally kills his children in a fire. The couple behind the real-life crime, Ernest and Heather Franklin, have been charged for murdering their 16-year-old son and trying to cover it up with a house fire.

The crime was apparently committed on Feb. 28 only a couple of hours after the two had seen Manchester by the Sea, district attorney Joseph McBride divulged. Coincidence? I don't think so.

The couple's adoptive son Jeffrey Franklin had both mental and physical disabilities, officials said. An autopsy found that Jeffrey was dead prior to the fire's start, but the original cause of death was not found due to the body's severe burns.

I can't be the only one who's absolutely frightened and disgusted by this.

The charges against the Franklins include second-degree murder, arson and tampering with evidence.

7 Bad Habits That Are Ruining Your Hair

Hair is amazing. It can be dyed any color under the sun, twisted, braided, pulled back or styled with heat tools. However, our hair is quite delicate, and not all hair is created the same. No matter how nice we might think we are to it, there are some bad habits out there that are ruining the health and luster of our tresses, good hair day or not. So we talked to Katie Bailey, a hair stylist at Serendipity Salon in Geneva, Illinois, as well as a few collegiettes to discuss the seven bad habits you should scratch to maintain the health of your lovely locks!

1. Using your heat tools on the wrong setting

Heat tools have the magical ability to make our hair as big and curly or pin-straight as we please, but you may want to think twice before clamping down. Just ask Dania De La Hoya, a sophomore at Illinois State University, who shared her horror story on the damage of our heat tool habits. “I completely fried my hair two years ago by straightening it all the time on the highest setting,” Dania says. “I got an expensive new straightener and was obsessed until I realized even protective sprays didn’t offer full protection against that level of heat.”

Although heat tools usually come with instructions on what temperature setting you should use on your hair, it’s tempting to crank it all the way up in order to get the job done faster. “I ended up having to chop most of my hair off and it’s grown back much healthier now that I’ve cut down on the heat!” Dania explains.

Stylist Katie Bailey stresses the importance of using the right heat setting. “If you have fine, damaged or bleached-out hair, you’ll want to use a lower heat setting for sure,” Bailey explains. “Always use a thermal protectant before styling with heat. Ladies with curly or coarse hair should definitely protect their hair, considering that they usually have to apply heat for longer. It’s okay for those with a thicker type of hair to use a higher heat setting to get the job done, just remember to use protectant!”

If you’re in the habit of not only using heat tools daily, but also having them on the highest setting when you really shouldn’t, you’ll definitely want to kick that to the curb. It’s getting hot in here, so turn down your heat tools!

2. Forgetting to use heat protectant products

As Bailey suggests, once you’ve finally nailed the proper temperature setting on your heat tools, you’ll want to grab for a protective spray next. Lena Gilmour, a sophomore at Queen’s University, points out that “forgetting to use a protective spray before using heated styling tools" is a major no-no!

So with so many heat-protectant sprays and creams out there, which one should you choose? “Anything water-soluble is best because it's not going to dry your hair out,” says Bailey. “A thermal lotion is probably the best option because it has conditioning benefits as well. At my salon, I use serums and lotion because they’re not only protecting your hair but they’re also conditioning it. Sprays don't have that conditioning element,” Bailey explains.

Although it may be tempting to skip that step in order to cut down on time and save money on product, your hair will end up paying for it. Heat protectants coats hair and creates a protective barrier, so just imagine what’s happening to your hair when nothing is standing in the way between your delicate strands and triple-digit temps from your blow dryers and hair straighteners!

3. Sleeping with your hair in a wet bun

Sleeping with your hair pulled up tight or in a bun is nice for staying cool and keeping strands off your face (especially when it’s not shampoo day), but it may be doing more harm than good—especially if it is shampoo day. “I have a really bad habit of falling asleep with my wet hair up in a messy bun,” says Molly Crum, a senior at James Madison University, “but this really damages my hair. The tight elastic band leaves a mark and I always wake up with my hair in a huge tangled mess!”

Keeping your hair up at night and away from your face is said to be good for your skin, but not so much for your hair, Bailey explains. “Anytime you put your hair back, especially when it's wet, can cause breakage because your hair bonds are really weak when your hair is wet.”

As a busy collegiette it’s easy to fall into the habit of tying-up your wet hair and hitting the sheets, but we must urge you to resist!

4. Not brushing properly

A lot more goes into brushing your hair than you may think. If you find yourself always reaching for a regular paddle brush and getting rough with tangles, through wet or dry hair, you may be in for some major breakage. Norris Goldflies, a junior at The University of Illinois at Chicago admits that her bad habits include brushing her hair when it’s wet and “finger combing it and basically ripping it if I hit a tangle.” Yikes!

If you have a lot of tangles, yanking a brush through them is obviously not good. A wide toothed comb for wet or dry hair and a wet brush for just-washed hair is good,” says Bailey. “Paddle brushes aren't good because they have way more bristles that are stiff and create tension. They rip through the tangles as opposed to just getting through the tangles. They’re just going to break your hair.” If you find yourself cleaning clumps of hair out of your paddle brush often, now you know why!

5. Wrapping your hair up in a towel

Wrapping up your hair after a shower seems like a quick fix to getting rid of the moisture, but curly-haired beauties should especially be wary of this, Bailey explains.

“Wrapping your hair in a towel can cause a lot of frizz, particularly for people with curly hair,” says Bailey. “I tell my curly-haired clients not to put their hair up, as the towel pulls out the curls and at the scalp and causes the hair to become frizzy. Gently scrunch your hair with a towel instead of wrapping it to remove moisture without disrupting your curls.” The extra effort will be so worth it!

6. Not using a clarifying shampoo

If you style your hair often and frequently use product, you may notice that your hair seems limp and dry after a while. If you’re not in the habit of thoroughly shampooing your hair and using a clarifying shampoo, then your hair might be in for a bad time.

“If you use a lot of product in your hair, it’s important to use a clarifying shampoo maybe twice a month,” says Bailey. “Product can create a layer on your hair that doesn’t allow for moisture and can dry your hair out, causing breakage and brittle hair (even the serums, creams and sprays!). A lot of product creates buildup in your hair, especially if you aren't shampooing that well.” Get in the habit of using a clarifying shampoo to ensure that you’re getting all the gunk out!

7. Picking split ends

Have you ever played around with your hair after not getting it trimmed for a while, only to find that you’ve got split ends? And maybe even some of your split ends have split ends? And all you want to do is mess with them even further? Yup. That may be the worst habit of them all.

“You know when a strand of hair gets that white dot before it breaks?” Norris asks. “I love breaking that piece of hair off.” Although messing with split ends does sometimes bring some weird sort of satisfaction, you are your hair’s worst enemy here. “Just don’t do it!” says Bailey. All your hair wants to do is love you (except on those evil, frizzy bad hair days), so we should give it all the love we have back.

These seven habits may sound really hard to break at first, but to quote High School Musical, “we’re all in this together,” girl. It will all be worth it in the end knowing that you’re doing everything you can do keep your hair looking gorgeous and healthy!
