The 10 Stages of Your Drunk Snap Story

$

0

It is no secret that alcohol impairs your decision making skills, and social media decisions are no exception to this rule. With the extremely easy access to everyone we know, we all know how it feels to wake up to cringe-worthy posts from the night before. So to make you feel a little less ashamed and a little less alone, we have compiled a list of the nine drunk stages of your snap story. Will you relate to it? Probably. Will you use this information to make more socially acceptable drunk decisions on your next night out? We doubt it.

Stage 1: The "Gangs all here" Snap

This usually occurs at the start of the night when the final crucial member of your squad arrives and the festivities commence. This picture is bound to take several tries because everyone must approve of the picture.

Stage 2: The Pregame Snap

Documenting your first sips of alcohol of the night is so important. You get to show your followers that you party AND you still look semi-presentable.

Stage 3: The “Passed out at the pregame” Snap

The subject of this pic is whomever takes the pregame festivities a little overboard. Whether they remain with the group for the rest of the night or not depends on their ability to rally.

Stage 4: The Uber Snap

You have already split the fare and your Uber driver is chill AF. His car, fully equipped with an AUX cord and water bottles, is arguably more fun than the party you're about to set foot into. This snap probably consists of you and your friends belting music from the backseat of the car and asking your driver extremely personal questions.

Stage 5: The Party Snap

Whether you rolled up to the bars or your buddies house party, alerting Snapchat that you've arrived is essential. It will often provoke text messages asking where you are and if your other friends can come. Obviously you tell them they can with or without the permission from the host of the party.

Stage 6: The Bathroom Snap

One of your friends is bent over the toilet and the friend group mom is holding back her hair. Another just saw her ex from middle school hug another girl and is in a full blown sob. Maybe there’s another banging on the door trying to get in. You? You're laughing and documenting all of this on your story. Maybe it’s TMI, but you don’t think so at the time.

Stage 7: The Drunchies Snap

Unfortunately every party must come to an end- but that doesn’t mean your night does. You end up at your favorite late night restaurant (probably Mcdonalds or some cheap pizza place) with more or less people than you started the night with. Maybe you try to take an artsy pic of your pizza that you think looks good, or maybe you take some selfies at the table with your friends. Either way you have never been happier and Snapchat must know that.

Stage 8: The “I meant to send this to my crush but I posted it on my story” Snap

This is pretty self-explanatory. You're either already in bed or well on your way there. It seems like an excellent idea to snap your crush before you take all your makeup off and drift into a deep sleep. Unfortunately you accidentally pressed the story button, which you likely won’t realize until you wake up in a few more hours.

Stage 9: The “Oh no what did I post” Snap

This stage is usually done in a frantic panic right when you wake up the morning after a night out. You open Snapchat and click through your story. As you slowly die from the embarrassment of your intoxicated social media decisions, you also delete the majority of your story even though everyone already saw it and judged you for it.

Stage 10: The Brunch Snap

You and your friends reflexively meet up for a post-game meal to discuss last night’s events. You may opt for a picture of the food you so desperately needed to mend your hungover, but more likely it's a picture of your best friend who died with the caption “She’s alive.”

This Brand Created Limited Edition Feminist Pieces to Raise Awareness of the Gender Pay Gap

FASHIONABLE is a fashion and lifestyle label that creates jobs for women living in poverty from Ethiopia to Nashville, TN. For Equal Pay Day today, the brand created a limited edition pouch and t-shirt to raise awareness for the gender pay gap—that is the unjust discrepancy between men and women's salaries, which means it took until today, April 4, 2017, on average, for women to make the equivalent of what men made in 2016. The pouch was handmade by women in Mexico and retails for $68, and the t-shirt was produced in Peru and retails for $36. Both read "FEMINI$T."

FASHIONABLE aims to empower women and prevent them from having to resort to avenues like prostitution to support their families. Although you should support their cause every day, because it's an amazing cause and because they make the cutest clothes and accessories, it's particularly meaningful to support the label today.

On producing the below video, Barrett Ward, CEO and co-founder of FASHIONABLE, had this to say: "As a father of four daughters, I’m daily inspired by their view of the world. Particularly, I’m moved by the truths revealed by their innocent view of justice. As I was thinking of creating a video about the injustice of the gender pay gap, I realized I would prefer to hear from their hearts and minds on this issue. So we grabbed some of their friends, and this video is the result." Watch the full video to feel inspired today and every day to close the gender gap and empower women:

Fox News Is Still in Hot Water Over Handling of Sexual Harassment Claims

If you thought the scandal around former Fox News chairman Roger Ailes ended with his ouster last summer, think again. Julie Roginsky, a paid political commentator for Fox News, filed a lawsuit Monday saying that Ailes sexually harassed her, NPR reports. She also claimed that others in top positions at the network aided and abetted Ailes in covering up the harassment.

So many women accused Ailes of harassment last year that the chairman was forced to resign. But he's still denying that he did anything wrong—even this particular incident has been described by Ailes’ lawyer Susan Estrich in an email to NPR as “total hogwash” and the latest in a string of additions to a “massive character assassination.”

Roginsky claims in her lawsuit that Ailes repeatedly asked Roginsky to have private drinks with him while also talking about promoting her to a permanent host position on the show The Five. When she refused to have a drink with him, he refused to meet with her again—and she definitely didn't get the promotion, which would have raised her public profile and increased her salary. Worse, she couldn't even continue to appear as a guest on The Five. Roginsky says when she reported what had happened, Fox News's president, Bill Shine, and the network's lawyer, Dianne Brandi, didn't do anything to investigate.

This suit, along with other recent news, shows Fox hasn't been able to change its sexist culture for the better. A lengthy New York Times investigation of Bill O'Reilly, a Fox News host, found last week that the network has paid $13 million to settle five sexual harassment suits against him. Advertisers are now dropping out of O'Reilly's show.

Fox News may have tried to implement new rules to improve the workplace climate, but old habits die hard.

The Senate Fight Over Neil Gorsuch's SCOTUS Confirmation is Getting Ugly

$

Senate Democrats received enough votes Monday to approve a filibuster of Supreme Court Nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch when he goes to the Senate for confirmation. The Republicans of the Senate are willing to do pretty much anything to confirm Gorsuch, including “going nuclear"—i.e. changing the rules of the Senate to break the filibuster with only 51 votes, instead of the usual 60. With both parties refusing to back down or consider compromise, The New York Times reports that U.S. politics might be about to change forever.

Filibusters aren't usually used to block Supreme Court nominees. The Times reports that that process is usually different, and “insulated at least somewhat from the body’s most partisan passions.” It’s starting to feel like nothing is safe from our polarizing political climate. If Democrats do filibuster, and Republicans invoke the nuclear option and change the rules, nobody will be able to filibuster future SCOTUS picks. Which party will benefit from that the most is still up for debate. While some Democrats think using the filibuster now is the wrong move when more Supreme Court justices could die or retire in the next few years, others believe that they need to tap into the energy of their base—and the Democratic base wants their Senators to block Trump whenever possible.

If the Republicans do indeed go nuclear, or if Democrats suddenly change their minds about the filibuster, Gorsuch could be confirmed by Friday

This Beauty Vlogger Answered a Fan's Comment in the Realest Way Ever

Everyone knows social media can be a place where people can post about their daily lives—with the occasional layer of filters and photoshopping. Even though most of us are aware that bloggers and social media icons are often using these tools to make their lives seem picture-perfect, it can still be easy to feel envious of the apparent perfection we see. One beauty vlogger, however, is not afraid to admit everything she's done to achieve her Instagram-worthy appearance, especially if some of her followers express their admiration in the comment section of her posts.

Lashed out and Cabo baecay (LOL f me I really need to quit that term) ready

A post shared by Gina (@ginashkeda) on

A 19-year-old fan of popular vlogger Gina Shkeda tweeted out a previously-Instagrammed photo of Shkeda lounging in bed in all of her "natural" glory, and Shkeda was quick to reply to point out her beauty wasn't quite as natural as the fan thought.

Shkeda replied, "Girl I have micro bladed brows, lash extensions in and lip injections. I don't even look like this you're flawless."

If only every Instagram-ing beauty admitted to their envious fans that their so-called natural beauty is something they've had to work for and change too. So much respect for you, Gina!

People Are Drawing Memes on Their Eyelids, Because It Was Only a Matter of Time

Who doesn’t love a good meme? Part of the popularity of the ongoing viral trend is that memes aren’t just funny—they’re relatable. Most of us have become pretty literate in the world of popular memes. The Kim Kardashian crying meme is perfect for when you get to your fave pizza joint five minutes after it closes. Evil Kermit is perfect for when you are conflicted about whether you should hit up that frat party or go to sleep in time to wake up for your very important 8 a.m. lecture. You are the Take My Money meme every time you walk into Sephora. I see you.

Besides tagging your best friend in every meme that you come across, and tweeting out the occasional golden one, there was no really tangible way that you can show your love of memes to the rest of the world… until now. The latest Instagram-worthy makeup trend is meme eyeshadow designs.

This isn’t your average smokey eye, and more than likely can’t be accomplished with your tried and true Naked Palette. However, it is sure to impress both meme and makeup lovers alike.

Instead of wearing your heart on your sleeve, you can now wear your meme (and the way that it expresses your feelings) on your eyes—which, let's face it, is so much better. Here are some possible ideas:

  • Overly Attached Girlfriend is a perfect beauty look for your first date—start your relationship off strong by letting your date know how committed you already are to them.
  • No. Rage Face can be used the next time someone tells you that you wear too much makeup.
  • All the Things is perfect for completing the makeup look that took you three hours to create—and used every single product that you own.
  • The Success Kid should be used for when you finally get that contour on fleek.

Would you try this trend? I’m not saying that I wouldn't be willing to try out an Evil Kermit look…. I just need to brush up my makeup skills before I attempt anything.

How to Hunt for a Last-Minute Summer Internship

$

It’s almost the end of the semester. Spring break is in the rearview mirror and you’re about to kick-off that last push towards finals. With everything else that’s been going on in your life, it’s easy to understand that sometimes things get lost in the shuffle—like looking for a summer internship. Oops? But your summer isn’t a lost cause quite yet. Here’s what to do if you’ve left looking for that summer internship until the very last minute.

It’s going to take some work

Okay, so maybe you missed the deadlines to apply for a few of those internships you were thinking about. Or maybe you put all your eggs in one basket and banked on a getting an internship that just didn’t work out. Whatever the reason, the fact is that starting to look later in the semester will be a little more difficult. “It will require more simultaneous work on your part,” says Laura Craig, Associate Director of Career Development at the Temple University Career Center. “That could include developing your professional brand and materials like a resume, researching industries and organizations, creating internship applications, and attending employer events.” It’s a lot to take on all at once, but it can pay off if you snag a great internship. Keep an eye on your campus’s Career Services job board if they have one or spend some quality time with online resources like internships.com. Not all internship applications operate on set deadlines and new postings get added every day. If you know what you’re looking for and have your resume polished up, it could just be a matter of keeping an eye out for the right posting to come along.

Related: 6 Common Misconceptions About Internships

Mine your connections

You also don’t have to start from scratch. “Don’t struggle alone,” Craig says. “Start with your campus resources – faculty, academic advisors and your career services office.” You can also turn to the people you know well. Marketing professional Mara Hyman suggests that last-minute-internship hunters should “put together a list of the family friends, mentors, distant cousins, anyone you know working in your industries of choice, and reach out to them about summer volunteer opportunities.” For Hyman, this strategy was successful: “I ended up finding an internship not because one was posted for the company, but because I had worked with an organization in high school whose team happened to need assistance that summer.” You never know when someone you know will have some good suggestions – or even a job for you!

Networking is also key as the summer gets closer. Craig explains that networking “can take many forms ranging from identifying and contacting alumni on LinkedIn to reaching out to personal contacts, or meeting people at events.” If you’re new to networking, looking for an internship can be a great way to practice before you need to use those skills out in the real world. It also gives you a chance to build connections that you can turn to for your next internship or when you’re looking for a full-time job.

Get creative

Job-hunting doesn’t always go perfectly. If you’re striking out looking in your particular field of interest, it might be time to think outside the box a little. Keep an eye out for positions that will let you work remotely or consider broadening your search to other fields where you might still get to do similar work. Smaller businesses with less competitive internship programs are great places to look for work. Maybe you missed the deadline to apply for that internship with a big marketing firm, but you can still get your feet wet in a marketing internship for a local company or nonprofit organization. With a smaller company, there’s also a good chance you’ll be given more to do. Look to community theaters, summer camps, your old favorite stores. As Hyman puts it, “Opportunities can pop up in the most unlikely of places, so don't give up!”

Related: How to Land Your First Job in a Field You Have No Experience In

Internships aren’t everything

If all else fails, a regular job is always a solid option. It’s better to have something on your resume, even if it isn’t directly related to your future career. Retail or food service might not be glamorous but you’ll have plenty of stories to tell in interviews about how you work with others and resolve conflict. According to Craig, “there are many opportunities to build skills that are important to employers—communication skills, leadership, ability to take initiative and ability to solve problems among others. It’s acquiring those skills and articulating how you used them in your experiences that impresses employers.”

In the end, the most important thing to avoid spending the summer on sitting on the couch. So get out there and start looking! And maybe don’t leave it all until the last minute next year.

SMFH, There Are Now Weed Flower Crowns for Coachella

You've probably heard by now that recreational marijuana was legalized in California on November 8 (that's one good thing to come out of that day). So if you feel like smoking at your Coachella campsite, you don't have to hide it anymore (it's still technically not allowed on the actual venue grounds). This is convenient, considering weed has always been a huge part of festival culture. You know what else is a huge part of festival culture? Flower crowns. The difference is, most people are sick and tired of flower crowns, but weed never goes out of style, never goes out of style.

One valiant weed-growing company, Lowell Herb Co., took it upon itself to give your tired festival headpiece a smoking hot update: I give you... the weed flower crown.

#LowellSmokes

A post shared by Lowell Herb Co (@lowellherbco) on

I'm assuming the point of this is to make every basic white girl feel like fuckin' Lana Del Rey for a weekend, but also, like, no. Please, no. As pointed out by Betches, wearing this will make you smell like bud, probably for days after you get back from Indio. It will stick to your hair and bits will fall off and people will try to grab it off of your head. All so you can look like every girl at Coachella in the history of Coachella. The weed flower crown is not edgy or cool, and it definitely won't protect you from the sun, so maybe stick with wearing a hat? Just a thought.

For $98 You Can Float on Kim Kardashian's Butt in the Pool

It's been a couple of months since Kim Kardashian blessed the world with any new merchandise in her Kimoji collection but luckily, the wait is over.

Today, the queen of social media released over 15 new items including but not limited to: lighters, bandanas, hats, and oh, an inflatable pool float in the shape of her own butt. Yup, you read that one right.

Of all of the items that she launched today for her Festival Merch collection, her pool floatation device has got to be the best one. I mean, who wouldn't want to lay in the sun on Kim Kardashian's ass all day?! So going for a nice price of $98 (yep, I know), you can do just that. Although it does look like a fun toy, some customers and fans were not pleased with the steep price.

But besides the whole pool thing, the rest of her collection is actually pretty dope. You can buy it now here.

Here at Her Campus, we’re all about highlighting aspirational women who have become influential forces in the world, proving that you can do anything you set your mind to. But what about the women who are changing lives and being total #girlbosses while they’re still in college? To honor those amazing women, there’s the 22 Under 22 Most Inspiring College Women. 2017 nominations for these spots are now open, but here’s a look at what past honorees have achieved to give you an idea of who fits this accolade best!

In 2016, the 22 young women selected ranged from poets to aspiring surgeons, and fought for causes like cancer treatment and foreign literacy. On average, the entire group was around 20 years old and founded a total of 19 organizations. Is your mouth wide open in awe yet?

We're looking for 2017 honorees who demonstrate leadership, excel academically, are doing big things in an area that’s important to them, and who have ambitious goals for their future. The only way the rest of us can achieve our dreams is by knowing that it’s possible for other girls to find success too, so why not nominate yourself or a deserving friend for one of the slots?

“Attitude and patience are key,” said Julia Richardson, a 2016 honoree who aspires to complete a 10K race even with an amputated limb. “Your attitude will truly make or break everything, and it’s incredibly rare for something amazing to happen overnight. It takes hard work, dedication and staying strong through the failures.”

2016 honoree Sara Li also has a go-getter attitude for achieving personal aims. “If I had to wait for permission every time I got an idea, I’d never get anywhere,” she said. “No matter how unrealistic or bold or insane your goal is, go now.”

To nominate someone, check out the official entry form for options on how to enter or nominate a friend! What are you waiting for?

Ivanka Trump’s ‘Petty’ Neighbor Saves the Internet

On Saturday night, hundreds of LGBTQ people and climate change activists protested outside of Ivanka Trump's Washington, D.C. home. As the protestors were busy having a dance party and fighting for what they believe in, a few of Trump's neighbors decided to come outside and watch the show, as one does.

One neighbor, in particular, caught the eye of the general public and literally, she is about to become your new spirit animal. I mean... LOOK AT HER.

IMO, Dianne Bruce, the fearless neighbor in fur, is everything that is right in the world. And she wasn't even trying. According to TIME, "It was the entertainment for Saturday night," she told TIME in an interview, explaining that she threw on the first thing she could find near the door. “A neighbor had a couple of glasses of wine, and we were standing so they gave us one as neighbors do, and at the end, I gave her back her glass.”

But, although she wasn't intending on joining a protest that night, she was not mad about it. “It was about people getting everyone together because they feel frustrated, and they all had big smiles on their faces. It was a celebration of freedom really and truly,” and “I was happy as a clam we were there,” she said. Me too, Dianne. Me too.

15 Things Only Girls Who Would Rather Have Money Than a Boyfriend Understand

$

0

There are those who believe love makes the world go round, and there are those who think it’s money that makes the world go round. Some of us may go back and forth depending on our relationship status, but there are some things you come to realize when you decide that money—especially spending money—trumps a boyfriend any day.

Here are 15 things only girls who would rather have money than a boyfriend understand.

1. All you do is work, leaving barely any time for love

At this point, you don't even have the energy for a boyfriend. If you had one, you'd have less time to work and less money, and you're just not about that life.

2. If you have to pick between picking up a shift or going on a date, you always go for the extra money

No offense to your Tinder matches, but you'd rather use your night off to make some extra money than sit through an awkward first date.

3. Why have a boy buy your presents when you'd rather buy your own?

Just because you don't have a boyfriend doesn't mean you can't be spoiled. Treat yo self.

4. You get more excited about payday than about going on dates

5. You indulge in retail therapy and spending money rather than leaning on a guy's shoulder

Nothing nurses a broken heart or a stressed out spirit like a little retail therapy. Sure, having a shoulder to cry on is nice, but so is crying into your new wardrobe you bought with hard-earned cash.

6. You have more shopping apps on your phone than dating apps

And if you have to delete an app, Tinder would be the first to go. How could you delete Etsy or Charlotte Russe?

7. You feel more butterflies when your bank account is in the four-digit zone than you do before meeting a guy

8. You don't agree with people who say you can't buy love

You can buy pizza, which is basically the same thing as buying love. And who needs a boyfriend when you have pizza?

9. You know more about managing money than being in a relationship

You even know how to maintain a successful budget—not so much how to maintain a successful relationship.

10. You prioritize buying things for yourself over pretty much everything else

You don’t have to spend money on a relationship if you don’t have one. That money can go toward food for you instead. Win-win.

11. You’re haunted by the money you could have saved during sales you missed out on, rather than the relationships you missed out on

Priorities.

12. You've got 99 problems, and all of them have to do with money instead of boys

13. You can better relate to your friend's financial struggles than their relationship struggles

You can offer plenty of advice and support when a friend is complaining about money, but you're not very helpful when it comes to boyfriends.

14. You'd rather wake up to a notification of a deposit made to your account than a cute "good morning" text

15. You redownloaded Tinder to try and make some money instead of trying to find your soulmate

If it worked for this girl, maybe it’ll work for you.

Have a love for quirkiness?  Not into joining your run-of-the-mill school paper or homecoming committee?  We once compiled a list of 15 crazy college clubs, but there’s plenty more craziness out there if you’re willing to look for it. From a murder mystery club to a pizza crust appreciation club, check out the wacky options that await you at schools all around the country!

Western Washington University – Foulplay: A Murder Mystery Club

Murder mysteries are no longer just for the detectives in books and movie—now you can become a sleuth too at Western Washington University!  The Foulplay club lets you act out your Sherlock fantasies by giving you the chance to play elaborate murder mystery games. At a game, you’re given a character book and have a few hours to figure out who the murderer is while cautiously interacting with your fellow friends—who may be your enemies!  According to the Foulplay Facebook page, “It’s to DIE for!”

Florida State University – The Flying High Circus

There are only two collegiate circuses in America, and FSU has one of them. Students make the costumes, put up the tent, produce the shows, and perform in all the acts!  According to their website, the Flying High Circus was created to help integrate men and women when the school became coed, which means it’s been empowering awesome collegiettes for years.

Kutztown University – The Medieval Renaissance Club

Sick and tired of the same-old same-old college lifestyle?  Wishing you could just go back to a time when things were simpler and people fought with swords?  Then you should head on over to Kutztown University, where the Medieval Renaissance Club hosts a Dinner Theater in the fall and a Renaissance Faire in the spring.  Their website also says you’re encouraged to learn skills from the time period “such as carpentry, weaving and chain mail.” Forget Facebook; stage combat sounds much more fun.

Tufts University – Free Compliments

Sometimes you feel best about yourself when you’re telling other people what you like about them.  That’s what the Tufts Free Compliments club is all about—just letting people know what’s great about them to brighten up their day!  Members stand outside a building on campus with signs that say “Free compliments” and shout niceties at anyone who walks by.  In a Her Campus Tufts article on the group, one of the members said that they “compliment everyone that walks past, regardless of age, gender, race, whether they have headphones on, whether they are on the phone, whether they are walking and talking with a group, etc.” Sounds like the perfect way to make your day while also making someone else’s!

Western Michigan University – Dignified Educated United Crust Eaters Society

The Dignified Educated United Crust Eaters Society, or DEUCES, was created at Western Michigan University to “bring a stop to the discrimination of crust,” according to its website.  Born from a friendly argument over the best part of a slice of pizza, the group is a social club devoted to eating crust and making sure it “gets the appreciation it deserves.” Sounds laidback and delicious—a perfect combination!

Occidental College – I

This is a club at Occidental College that deals with the attitude toward sex on campus. Kristin, one of the founders of the club at Oxy, says the club “is trying to open up a conversation about sex on our college campus. We want to positively influence the hookup culture on our campus as to make talking about what makes our experiences great instead of keeping them taboo.” The club’s future includes speakers and meetings focused on different sex topics.

University of Colorado Boulder – Slacklining Club

Slacklining is a sport involving stringing a loose piece of nylon between two trees and walking along it.  That in itself is pretty cool, but if you like your unusual sports with a side of philanthropy, the club at UC-Boulder but also raises money to restore rainforests in Brazil through an annual competition called “Slacklining for Trees.”  They also sell pieces of protective equipment called “treehuggers,” which provide a barrier between the tree and the slackline and make the sport environmentally friendly.

Northern Michigan University – The Tree Musketeers

Have you always watched Tarzan with envy, wishing that you too could fly through the jungle just by grabbing on to tree branches (I know I have)?  Well, there’s a club for you in the Tree Musketeers Club at Northern Michigan University.  According to their page on NMU’s website, the Musketeers use meetings to “discuss technique as well as vote on locations for future adventures.” Whatever that means, it sounds awesome.

These clubs are pretty crazy, but there are a lot more wacky, quirky and interesting clubs out there. Comment with the clubs we missed from your school!

7 Things to Do After Accepting a College

It’s finally over. After weeks of debating with your parents and constantly listing pros and cons of colleges in your head, you’ve finally made a decision. It’s not easy to choose where you’ll be spending the next four years of your life, so give yourself a pat on the back – you deserve it. While it may seem far away right now, the next few months are going to fly by. If you’re wondering what to do in the meantime, read on. We’ve talked with collegiettes and experts around the country to list your next steps after accepting a college.

1. Don’t brood over ‘what if’ colleges

After you’ve carefully made a decision and sent in your acceptance letter, don’t let your mind wander to that timeless question, “what if?” You’ve chosen the school that best fits your life goals. If you know you’ve chosen wisely, stop yourself from worrying. It won’t help you any.

Dr. Bari Norman, certified educational planner and co-founder of Expert Admissions, reminds you to keep your focus. “It's important to know when to move on, and this is one of those times,” she says. “It may not be easy, but you want to start focusing on where you'll actually be going to college so you can make the most of it and give it a fair shot.  You had whatever school you're attending on your list for certain reasons – remember those reasons, and start focusing on the good.”

Oftentimes, we have to go against family or friends when choosing what’s best for our lives. If your parents or friends aren’t too supportive about where you decided to study, don’t let that get to you. This is the start of your life and learning to choose for yourself is important!

2. Figure out your living arrangements

When you send in your acceptance letter to your college, you’ll most likely receive an e-mail from the department that handles orientation. They will give you information about signing up for orientation, choosing your dorm and meal plan, and even picking your classes. Pay attention to the deadlines and write them down so you’re prepared for the months leading up to your first day of school. If you’re unclear about anything, don’t be afraid to shoot an e-mail back and clear your doubts – it’s proactive and they’ll be happy to help.

Choose a dorm and meal plan that fits best with both your financial and academic needs. If you’re going to school close to home, you might be able to commute and save money. If you’re going to school far away, you’ll probably need to invest in a dorm and meal plan.

Iesha, a sophomore at the University of Florida, gives you tips on finding a place to live. “Start doing research on all the specifics for living accommodations,” she says. “You may want to live on campus your first year, which is both convenient for getting to classes and ‘forces’ you to see other people frequently and make friends. However, don’t be afraid of looking into off campus options your first year – I found out I could live off campus at a cheaper rate than a dorm and I personally like having my own bed and bathroom. I learned to be independent even more quickly when I got an apartment, but choose the option that is best suited for your needs.”

You might even be thinking about bringing your car to school. The best way to find out information on the specifics of such living arrangements at your school is to check online and connect with current students. Your school will most likely have a FAQs page for new students – check that out and talk to people who already live on campus if you can.

3. Check if you have required summer reading

Colleges sometimes have required summer reading for incoming freshman. In my case, they actually sent the book by mail and emphasized that we’d be assessed on the novel within our first semester. Not all colleges will do that, but definitely make sure you know whether you have a book to read – you don’t want to completely miss it. It will most likely be mentioned in the welcome e-mail from your college, but if not, check on the website to be absolutely sure.

If you’re enrolling in an English course your first semester, teachers will often have books they’d like you to read over the summer. Send an e-mail to the teacher and see if you have any reading. Even if you don’t, your proactive attitude will stand out and they’ll most likely remember you by name when you’re finally in their class.

4. Apply for scholarships

College is a huge financial burden. Whether you, your parents, student loans, or a combination of the three will be covering your tuition, it’s definitely a difficult burden to carry. During your last summer before college, you’ll most likely have a good deal of free time. Take a few hours every week to apply for scholarships. It’s really easy – you’ll probably just need to fill out some information and write a quick essay. Since you’ve already written a ton during application season, you only need to tweak a few things here and there and send it off.

Not sure where to find scholarships? It’s a lot easier than you’d think. First of all, you can simply look online. There are tons of scholarships you can find with just a simple Google search. If you want to look for local opportunities, ask guidance counselors at your high school and check with institutions around your hometown. The key is to look for scholarships with both a small applicant pool and small reward. You’ll have a much better chance of getting a $100 scholarship from a local society than a $3,000 scholarship from a big chain. Don’t let the small amount of a scholarship dissuade you from applying – the numbers can add up.

5. Connect with other incoming freshmen

A great way to calm your pre-college nerves is to connect with other new students. That way, you already have a few ‘friends’ even before you set foot on campus. Look for a “New Student” or “Class of [Insert Graduation Year]” Facebook page for your college – most schools have one to help freshmen foster a sense of community. Join and be active on the page. You might just meet some great friends. And if you really connect with someone, you could even ask that person if he or she’d like to room together. It’s great to choose your roommates so you can have a better idea of who you’ll be living with.

Iesha notes that finding roommates before you get on campus can enhance your college experience, and that you shouldn’t be afraid to choose people that you wouldn’t normally become friends with. She says, “I recommend finding roommates ahead of time, unless you want to get paired with someone randomly, which can also be exciting! I chose roommates I thought I’d click with the best and even some outside of my normal circle and it turned out splendidly – we’re all super close now!”

Dr. Norman adds that orientation can be another great way to meet both freshmen and upperclassmen. “Many schools also have orientations for first-year students in the months and days before school starts. These events will be great ways to meet other incoming students and also upperclassmen who will volunteer as part of these programs,” she says. “Upperclassmen are great resources, and it’s always nice to know someone older on campus who you can reach out to, if needed.”

If you know people from your high school will be attending your college in the fall, definitely reach out to them. You may never have spoken to them before, but they’ll be glad to know they’re not alone. Who knows, you might become good friends!

6. Shop and pack for your dorm

Make sure you have a plan when you go shopping for dorm supplies. Write down a quick list of the essentials you’ll need for setting up your room. You don’t want to arrive your first day and forget something important (and then have to fight the crowd of incoming freshmen at the nearest superstore). If you’re moving far away and have to travel by plane, keep in mind that you’ll most likely need to buy the majority of your supplies at your college.

Your school will probably provide you with a packing list, but if not, feel free to check out our ultimate collegiette packing list. It’s got everything you need – and more.

7. Relax

Finally, and most importantly, let yourself relax. You’ve made it – you’ve braced yourself through hectic college application season and you’re finally at the pearly white gates of college. From here on out, you’ll have more freedom in your life and the opportunities are endless. Let yourself cool off and enjoy your last few weeks of high schoolGive yourself a break – college will be stressful enough.

Dr. Norman reminds you that it’s okay to do nothing. “This might not be the advice you’re expecting to hear from a college advisor, but I think it’s a great time to do nothing, however you define that,” she says. “Most students have been working really hard leading up to college, and they’ll be working hard again once they get there, preparing for the next phase after college. This is the one summer where you’re sort of in between things, and I think students should take advantage of it, if they can.”

Maybe take up a new hobby this summer: playing an instrument, yoga, painting. This time is for you, and you deserve it. Good luck, future collegiette! You can achieve anything and everything if you put your mind to it. Be excited about your college experience and keep dreaming.

5 Things Every Collegiette Needs to Know About Filing Taxes

You just landed your dream job and you’re looking forward to getting some moola to tuck away for next spring break or a generous shopping excursion. But wait, isn’t there something you’re forgetting? Or maybe, you began interning last year and your parents are starting to mention a certain word more and more… Here's everything you need to know about filing your taxes as a collegiette.

1. Plan way ahead

Like, more than you would for that class essay.

The official date when tax forms should be filed and submitted changes from year to year, but it’s usually in early April. Check up around December to see when the IRS has declared Tax Day to be; for 2017, the Internal Revenue Service announced that it would be on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. Traditionally, Tax Day is on April 15 unless it happens to fall on a Saturday or Sunday, in which case the deadline is moved to the next business day.

In early January, the IRS announces an opening day—this is the date when all taxpayers can start filing their taxes. Exciting stuff, right? It’s almost like a holiday. So in 2017, tax season officially opened on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

Once you start filing your own taxes, you will need to keep records throughout the year, though. There’s no way you’re going to remember a donation you made last January or February, so consolidate all that information into a paper or digital file and keep adding to it! For example, you may have unreimbursed expenses from your university or job or receipts showing how much you spent on textbooks, utilities, etc. throughout the year. If you make charitable donations, that qualifies you for a tax deduction, but you need to provide qualifying documents showing you actually made the donation. By the time tax season rolls around, you should have all the information you need.

2. Know what qualifies you for deductions and credits

A.K.A. fancy words that mean you pay less taxes.

We're all broke college students, so when it comes to paying taxes, getting a refund makes a big difference. Some definitions first: deductions lower the amount of taxable money you owe, and credits directly cut your tax bill. You should refer to the official IRS website to find out specifically what you may qualify for. For example, there are tax benefits for education, so if you are using some of your income to pay for college, then the amount of money you owe in taxes may be reduced. As a helpful tip, you can use the IRS Interactive Tax Assistant Tool to check if you’re eligible for credits and deductions. It’s a 25-minute process that’s pretty similar to those college tuition calculators you may have used back in high school.

3. Understand your W-2

It’s the Holy Grail of tax forms.

Did you know W-2 stands for Employee Wage Report form? The W-2 form is issued from employer to employee by January 31 and tells the IRS how much you earned and how much was already deducted for taxes, Social Security or Medicare. If you’ve never seen a W-2 before, familiarize yourself by checking out this sample W-2. A copy of your W-2 must always be included when you file your tax forms, whether you are sending in your forms online (in tax jargon: e-filing) or physically mailing your tax forms. Always double check whether your Social Security Number (SSN) and the company’s corresponding information is correct.

4. Know which 1040 tax form to file

All this jargon is crazy, but you do need to know it.

Okay, getting into the actual tax form. All individual federal taxes should be filed on a 1040 form, but there are different types of the 1040 form: 1040A, 1040EZ and the 1040. Most college students file the 1040A form because it allows you to include information regarding income from taxable scholarships and fellowship grants, along with income from a job. You can also include deductions from paying interest on student loans and from paying tuition and college-related fees.

Similarly, the 1040EZ form is for people who have a taxable income below $100,000. Fill out this form if you are single or married but do not have any dependents (i.e. a child who you are financially supporting) and your interest income (the amount of money you receive as interest per year) is under $500.

But if your income is higher than $100,000, if you rank as self-employed or rank as a partner in a company, or you have certain shareholder status (you own a number of stocks), you will need to file the 1040 form and therefore qualify for a higher tax rate.

You will have to use your best judgment to decide which tax form to file, but the best part is that if you use a tax software and e-file, the software will have you fill out your information and automatically choose your form for you! This way you will receive the form that will help you get the most benefits. This leads us to our final point.

5. There are benefits to e-filing

It’s time to do some shopping…for tax software! But actually, we guarantee it’ll make your life a lot easier during tax season. Not only does e-filing eliminate human error, but receiving refunds usually takes half the time compared to the 21-day window you would incur if you were mailing your tax form. If your adjusted gross income (AGI) is below $62,000, then luckily you can file directly via IRS Free File.

Colby College alumna Kayla Lewcowicz recommends, "Use TurboTax! It will save your life. And don't be afraid to call your parents on this one—it's too important to mess up." TurboTax is Intuit's chief tax software, and it has a reputation of being easy to use with step-by-step instructions along the way. Therefore, it is perfect for first-timers. While you're filing, TurboTax also shows you in real time how many refunds you qualify for, and you have live access to chatting with a tax expert for any questions. And the bonus is, it has a Federal Free Edition which is, yup, absolutely no-cost. The Free Edition should suffice for anyone who is filing a simple 1040A, 1040 or 1040EZ form. Anything more complicated and you will need to upgrade to their paid version.

Other popular tax software programs include H&R Block Free Edition, TaxAct Free Federal Edition and TaxSlayer Free Federal Edition. Since you can probably make do with a basic tax program at this stage in your life, it's best to try out some of the free, bottom-tier offerings that accounting companies produce. It also helps to ask your parents, who have had years of experience at this, what software they've been using.

Breathe; you’ve just gone through a lot of information. As Kayla says, "Forget graduation, doing my taxes was a much bigger wake up call!" While filing taxes may sound tedious, it’s just another part of adulthood, and you may be surprised to find out how much it pays off (literally). So do your research, get advice from your family and friends, and definitely do not procrastinate when it comes to filing your tax return!

Steve Bannon Has Been Removed From the National Security Council

Steve Bannon, controversial Trump advisor and former head of the ultra-conservative Breitbart News, was removed from the National Security Council on Wednesday, Bloomberg reported. Bannon’s appointment to the NSC in January was highly controversial given his lack of qualifications and what some might call his white nationalist leanings.

The news came from a memo published in the Federal Register rather than from any sort of formal announcement. And Bannon’s removal was not the only shakeup reported in the filing. The role of Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert was also downgraded, while the national intelligence director, Dan Coats, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Corps General Joseph Dunford, have been restored to “regular attendees” of the NSC’s Principals Committee. This committee is defined by The Associated Press as “a group of high-ranking officials who meet to discuss pressing national security priorities.” The National Security Council itself is the main group that advises the president on foreign and domestic security considerations. It usually consists of members of the president’s cabinet, his close advisors, and ranking military and intelligence officials.

The memo gave no official reason for Bannon’s departure from the council. According to the AP, “a senior White House official said Wednesday that Bannon was initially placed on the national security council after Trump's inauguration as a measure to ensure implementation of the president's vision, including efforts to downsize and streamline operations at the NSC.” Another anonymous White House official told Bloomberg that Bannon had been placed on the council to monitor embattled former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. After Flynn had to resign and General H.R. McMaster took his place, there was no reason for Bannon to remain on the council. BuzzFeed News reports that to many insiders, Bannon’s departure is seen as McMaster’s final step in consolidating his power within the NSC.

Many Democratic lawmakers celebrated Bannon’s exit, particularly given his ultra-conservative leanings. "I'd be very pleased that he would not be on the National Security Council," Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin told Politico. "My hope is that he would have no role in government at all." We can all hope that this is a step in the right direction.
