Nicole Kidman Talks About the Physical & Emotional Toll of 'Big Little Lies'

0
0

Nicole Kidman wasn’t playing around when she agreed to take on the role of Celeste Wright on Big Little Lies. On the HBO series, Celeste is abused by her husband, Perry Wright, who appears as charming as can be to those who don't know about his dark side. Though it is just acting, Kidman expressed how much the role became a part of her, both on- and off-set.

“There were days and days of doing a lot of aggressive, really violent scenes. And I would go home and have a shower or have a bath and I would weep at home. And it would be like, 'Oh my gosh, what is happening to me?'” Kidman told Entertainment Weekly.

Nicole went on to say that she even got to a point where she threw a rock at a glass door because she was experiencing so much stress from the role. “It just penetrated my psyche in a way a film never had,” she said. Yikes.

Kidman certainly didn’t take the role lightly, which showed in her devastatingly real portrayal of Celeste. The actress admitted to EW that she felt “very exposed and embarrassed” because her emotions would blend with Celeste's, leaving her overwhelmed.

Nicole previously shared with Vogue that there were days when she went home with bruises from her scenes with Alexander Skarsgård, who played Perry. She even had to take Advil due to the physical pain she endured on set. "At one point [her husband] Keith [Urban] was like, 'I'm going to take a photo of your back because it's covered in deep, massive bruises.' He was devastated seeing it, but then he would say, 'But I have an artist wife!'"

Of her decision to not go the route of using a stunt double, Kidman told EW, "I was living through it. I felt the necessity to do that for the truth of this story, which I feel is a very important story to tell."

Despite the many emotions and the stress Kidman was subjected to, she's happy that this project happened. “I like the high-wire act of it…Conformity is what I run from,” she said. That’s why we love you, Nicole.

The Big Little Lies finale aired Sunday night, and while a second season is being discussed, it's far from a sure thing.

Blogger Fave: NYX Cosmetics' Lip Lingerie Offers a Shade of Nude for Everyone

0
0

Makeup lovers everywhere know that NYX Cosmetics is the place to go for high quality, highly pigmented products at a price even us collegiettes can afford. While I'm not obsessing over their Illuminating Sticks or using their Dewy Finish Setting Spray to lock in my makeup for the day, I instinctively reach into my makeup bag for my Lip Lingerie matte liquid lipstick.

A post shared by Copper (@coppermakeup) on

One of my favorite shades (pictured here) is Bedtime Flirt, a cool, pinkish red tone that looks stunning on most skin tones. That's one of the best things about this collection, tbh. Along with the super creamy and long-wearing formula, there literally is a perfect shade of nude for everyone. And, if you're not really into the nude lip game, there are plenty of darker hues you can channel your inner '90s grunge girl with, like Confident, and Scandalous

I love applying these with just my ring finger for a soft, faded-out tint look. They also work wonderfully straight from the tube as well, creating that beautifully plump pout that everyone and their mother are going nuts for. Pro tip: on their website, NYX offers a hand-picked lip-liner choice to go with each shade (they're coming for you, Kylie)!

You can find NYX Cosmetics' Lip Lingerie at most beauty stores and on their website for $7 each.

Aerie's New Unretouched Swim Campaign is Everything the Fashion Industry Needs

The fashion industry's advertising campaigns often boast images of women with airbrushed faces and photoshopped bodies, which not only creates an impossible standard of beauty but also instills a sense of shame into young women who look any different. Luckily, Aerie is here to change that!

The brand is at it again for the second year with its "Love The Swim You're In" campaign, which features all unretouched photos of women rocking the new line of suits. All of these photos show women how they truly are, cellulite and all. It's basically the best swimsuit advertising you'll ever see!

Not only is Aerie promoting body positivity with its new Happy Swim line, but the brand is also donating $1 (up to $10,000) to the National Eating Disorders Association every time someone posts a photo using the hashtag #AerieREAL.

I don't know about you, but I'm about to go grab a new Aerie suit and snap a pic just to support this incredible movement. Love your bodies, ladies!

Kim Kardashian Looks Flawless in Her First Post-Robbery Red Carpet Appearance

It has been almost six months since Kim Kardashian's horrific robbery and until yesterday, she has stayed out of the spotlight. With only a few public outings and only recently coming back to her social media, she has changed her social presence completely.

But finally, she is back and better than ever. According to Cosmopolitan, Kim made a grand entrance back into stardom on the Daily Front Row's Fashion Los Angeles Awards red carpet. Wearing a sheer Givenchy dress, our favorite star looked absolutely fantastic.

Kendall Jenner Forgot to Cut the Ankles Off Her Cut-Off Jeans

Kendall Jenner is a regulation hottie, and a fashion guru to many. Her outfits are often gorgeous and, if not always recreatable, at least drool-worthy. Her latest ensemble, however, is one I can't quite bring myself to endorse. The supermodel stepped out in an oversized striped button-down and, wait for it, denim cut-offs with the ankles still attached. They look like the designer got bored and peaced out to buy a donut in the middle of cutting them. They look like that dreaded moment when our normal-person shorts start to unravel at the seams. They probably feel like you're being tickled the whole time you wear them. It just doesn't seem worth it, ya know?

Despite this questionable fashion choice, Kenny, being Kenny, still looks more fabulous than I ever will. But come on, this is weird, no? And can we talk about the shirt poppin' out at the bottom? Pretty sure that's not supposed to happen, but maybe I just don't understand fashion. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Twitter Users Have ~Thoughts~ on Melania Trump's Official White House Portrait

Earlier on Monday, the White House released the first official portrait of Melania Trump and right away, Twitter users were not impressed. Besides the obvious photoshopping, users were quick to point out the ginormous diamond ring on her finger that showcases the wealth of the First Family.

According to Refinery29, Donald Trump gave his wife the 25-carat diamond ring on their 10th anniversary, replacing the smaller 12-carat ring she had before. With all of the drama regarding taxes and personal assets, it is no surprise that people are unhappy with this display of wealth.

But regardless, whether it is because of her unnatural glow or the serious bling on her finger, people are not pleased with Melania's portrait.

Michelle Obama Wore Her Natural Hair For The First Time & Broke the Internet

Since Michelle Obama left the white house, she has swapped out her tailored suits for skinny jeans and her heels for sneakers. All while still looking flawless, of course.

In the most recent snapshot of the former First Lady, she is seen wearing a gray tank top and a polka dot headband. But that is not what is special about the photo. For the first time in literally years, Michelle is photographed with her natural hair and obviously, everyone loves it. Although she has always had her natural hair, throughout her time in the White House it was always styled into silky smooth waves, courtesy of Johnny Wright. But now, she is free and running with it.

According to Refinery29, it is not clear when the photo was taken of Michelle on vacation, but obviously, once it spread to Twitter, the praise for it spread like wildfire.

15 Reasons Why Your Mom Is the Best Friend You'll Ever Have

0
0

If you were to ask my high school self how I felt about my mom, I would probably mutter a slew of complaints mentioning how she "doesn't get me" and "won't let me live my life!!!!" But if you asked me today, it would be a completely different story. We don't always get along with our mothers (especially as teenagers), but as we age, we tend to find ourselves drawing closer to them. I can honestly say that my mom is one of my closest friends I have today, and here are 15 reasons why it's probably the same for you.

1. You can confide anything in her.

And I mean anything.

2. She totally gets your humor.

Because you are basically the same person, so it's her type of humor, too.

3. She will always have your back.

No matter what, that woman will always fight for you. Take that, you mean chick from middle school!

4. She will help save your cooking failures and teach you to make real, adult food.

Because, no, ramen does not count as real food.

5. She puts up with your sass.

Your actual friends don't have to do that, but your mom does bc she's awesome.

6. She's full of good life advice.

Because despite what you said as a teenager, she actually has been through all of the same things as you.

7. She will be the first one to comfort you when something goes wrong.

She's been doing it all your life, so she's pretty good at it by now.

8. Plus, she always knows the best way to cheer you up.

Thanks, mom!

9. She's always down to go shopping with you.

All of the styles that she wore in her day are coming back, so she might actually have some fashion advice for you now.

10. She won't let you make bad decisions.

Because she genuinely cares about you. And also because she probably doesn't want to have to clean up your mistakes for you afterwards, which moms tend to do.

11. She will always shower you with compliments.

Who doesn't love getting compliments?

12. She won't judge you.

Even when you can't bring yourself to change out of pajamas before leaving the house (probably because she's doing the same thing).

13. You can survive a vacation without wanting to kill each other.

Plus, you can sometimes convince her to pay for your food. How many of your friends do that?

14. You're basically exactly alike.

Admit it, you've been told you're exactly like your mom on more than one occasion.

15. She knows you literally better than anyone else.

I mean, she created you and also raised you for your entire life, so it makes sense that she's the best friend you could ever have.

5 Ways to Tell Your SO You Need Space

0
0

In a serious relationship, it’s easy to slowly lose sight of yourself when you’re with your SO every minute of the day. Even past the “honeymoon stage,” many couples find themselves spending no time apart, which can be unhealthy for the relationship. However, requesting space can sometimes come off the wrong way, leading the other person to believe he or she is losing you.

1. Define the type of space you need

There are different types of space that you may be craving in your relationship. If you need physical space, request a day or two of the week when the two of you will spend time apart pursuing your own activities. If you want emotional space, politely ask him or her to not interrupt or distract you when you’re doing something you enjoy. One way to go about this would be to say something like, "I'm reading this book (or whatever you do) right now, I would like some peace and quiet if that's okay." This way, you aren't coming off a rude and making it clear that you enjoy this personal time doing something you like.

2. Don’t use the word “space”

“I need my space” is too blunt and demanding, so try to be a little more sympathetic to his or her feelings. This phrase often serves as a sign that the relationship is coming to an end, and you don’t want to worry your partner. Instead, you can say, “I think we need more alone time,” or “I think we should take time to ourselves sometimes.” This way, you aren’t giving the illusion that you don’t enjoy spending time with that person or that you are annoyed.

Related: 5 Clingy Habits that are Ruining Your Love Life

3. Mention the reasons why

Most likely, your SO will probably be a little concerned no matter how you go about this. Therefore, it’s extremely important to immediately mention the reasoning behind your request. You should never just say you need time to yourself without explaining why, because that will only lead your SO to assume the worst. Be sure to mention what you will use that alone time for, such as exploring a hobby or catching up on school work. Chelsea Jackson, a junior at Iowa State University, says, “I would simply tell them that I need some time to relax by myself. I have had some issues with particularly clingy exes, where they have gotten upset that I wanted/needed some ‘me time.’ In situations like that, I typically just state that I'm busy and need to work on stuff, or I need some quality time with my roommates.” Anyone who truly cares about you will respect these types of requests.

4. Mention the benefits

There are many benefits to having alone time. For example, you could mention how the both of you could get your school work done faster without any distractions, or that alone time will make you cherish the time spent together even more. Most importantly, tell them you want space because you care about the relationship, not the opposite. Lindsey Allen, a sophomore at the University of New Haven, says, “Alone time is very healthy for a relationship because space/time away allows you to reflect and be your own person separate from your SO. If you spend too much time with your SO, it's harder to differentiate yourself from your relationship.”  Having your own sense of self in a relationship is crucial for its success.

5. Listen and be considerate

Hopefully, your SO will understand your reasoning and respect your request. However, if your partner seems bothered or hurt by it, make sure you listen to them and come up with some type of compromise. You don’t want to negatively affect your relationship, and you shouldn’t demand something that will make your SO upset or uncomfortable. There is always a middle ground to be found.

It’s okay to need and want space in a relationship, and you should never feel ashamed for asking. If you’re with the right person, he or she will be understanding. With these steps, you can get the alone time you need without damaging the relationship.

20 Insane Arguments Every Feminist Has Had With An Anti-Feminist

0
0

Every feminist has had to have these ridiculous conversations at some point...People, it's 2017. Get on board.

The “No, Not All Feminists Hate Men” Argument.

Feminism is fighting for both men and women’s rights.

The “Yes, The Patriarchy Exists and It’s Still Thriving” Argument.

Unfortunately the patriarchy is still alive and well.

The “No, I’m Not Just a Feminist Because Taylor Swift and Beyoncé Are” Argument.

Although it doesn’t hurt the cause.

The “Being a Feminist Does Not Mean You’re Just Angry” Argument.

The angry-feminist stereotype is absolutely ridiculous and inaccurate.

The “No, Feminism is Not Just a Trend (it’s Actually Been Around for a LONG Time)” Argument.

I’m not just a feminist because it’s trendy.

The “No, Cat-Calling Should Not Be Taken as Flattering” Argument.

If it makes me uncomfortable, then it’s not okay.

The “You Can Totally Be a Feminist and a Girly-Girl” Argument.

There’s nothing anti-feminist about enjoying shopping, makeup, and the color pink!

The “Feminism Isn’t About Making Excuses or Gaining Certain Privileges for Women” Argument.

It’s not just about trying to give women the upper hand.

The “Being a Feminist Does Not Mean You Belong to the LGBTQA Community” Argument.

They are two very distinct things.

The “No, Feminism is Not Reversed Sexism” Argument.

Again feminism is about equality of the genders, not asserting one as better than another.

The “Yes, The Wage Gap is a Very Real Thing” Argument.

And the sooner we all fight for feminism, the sooner the wage gap will disappear.

The “Not All Feminists Agree on or Fight For the Same Things” Argument.

There’s a wide range of beliefs within feminist theory.

The “Of Course Feminism Realizes Men Face Double Standards” Argument.

Women are not the only ones who suffer under the patriarchy.

The “No, I’m Sorry, but Women DO NOT Have Equal Rights As Of Yet” Argument.

There is so much more than just the right to vote.

The “A Woman Comfortable With Her Sexuality Does Not Make Her a Slut” Argument.

Women should be able to celebrate their bodies and express themselves how they want, without fear of society’s double standards.

The “You Can Be Both a Feminist and Stay-At-Home-Mom” Argument.

Feminism is about giving women the choice and opportunity to be whoever they want to be!

The “Yes, Feminism is Fighting For Both Men and Women’s Rights” Argument.

It even says it in the definition of “feminist”.

The “Free The Nipple is About More Then Not Wearing Uncomfortable Bras” Argument.

It’s about the fact that women are expected to wear something as uncomfortable as bras.

The “Yes, Men Can Also Be Feminists” Argument.

Feminism is in no way an all-girls movement.

The “Yes, We Still Need Feminism Even Though It’s 2017” Argument.

Feminism has accomplished a lot, but there’s still a lot of work to be done!

7 Beauty Brands Founded by Badass Women to Shop Today

0
0

Yes, it's 2017 and women are still getting paid a fraction of men's salaries. We at HC want to help bridge that gap, and one of the ways we can do that is by supporting women-owned companies. We rounded up some of our favorite cosmetics lines founded by badass ladies, which you can shop away while still showing your disapproval for a system that undermines women. Who run the world?

1. Maureen Kelly, Tarte Cosmetics

Kelly started Tarte Cosmetics out of her New York City apartment with little more than a passion for making makeup that was actually good for your skin. She donates 5 percent of her net profits to charity, stating, "People have helped me on the way and I've been given wonderful opportunities. You have to give back no matter how small you are."

2. Anita Roddick, The Body Shop

Roddick started The Body Shop with a worldly consciousness. Throughout her journey of building one of the largest beauty companies in the world, she continued to thrive in social activism, supporting Greenpeace, Amnesty International, rainforest preservation and preventing animal testing.

3. Huda Kattan, Huda Beauty

Kattan operates the most popular beauty blog in the Middle East, and has recently used her expertise and passion for beauty to start a beauty brand that produces widely loved false lashes, lip contour sets and an eyeshadow palette.

4. Lisa Price, Carol’s Daughter

Price was encouraged by her mother (Carol) to start a beauty brand out of her Brooklyn kitchen. Price says, "customers shopped out of my apartment for six years before I actually opened a store.” She has turned her kitchen start-up into a multimillion dollar business, that now operates with plenty of celebrity fans and investors, such as Jay-Z and Jada Pinkett-Smith.

5. Wende Zomnir, Urban Decay

Zomnir’s company, Urban Decay, has embodied their tagline, "Beauty with an edge." Zomnir is never one to shy away from the outlandish, unique and daring. While some of her products aren’t for those who aren't willing to take a few beauty risks, other products, like the Naked Palette ($54, Urban Decay), have become a staple in every girl’s makeup bag.

6. Kylie Jenner, Kylie Cosmetics

The youngest Jenner sister started her makeup brand in 2015 with a lip kit and a famous pair of lips to promote them. Since then, she has churned out a variety of products, truly infiltrating every aspect of makeup with products that instantly become fan favorites, and sell out quicker than you can say “like, realizing stuff."

7. Bobbi Brown, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics

In the ‘80s, Brown was a makeup artist that favored and used natural makeup instead of the bright colors that were popular during the time. With her makeup brand, she continues to stick to her roots; the average “Bobbi Brown” woman can be described as timeless and effortlessly chic.

4 Ways to Get Paid During Grad School

0
0

Grad school is when you hone in your skills and truly pinpoint your career goals. It doesn’t, however, have to be a debilitating period of money-sucking horror.

If you’re feeling the monetary burden of your graduate education, have no fear. Here are a few ideas for getting a job that will not only supplement your education, but may boost your resume along the way.

1. Become a writing tutor

Most universities seek out writing tutors who can help both undergraduate and graduate students navigate their essays with ease.

In some cases, this job will give you the flexibility to set your own schedule, which is ideal when you’re juggling increased responsibilities compared to your undergrad years.

Sydney Post, a former grad student at Emerson College, found the role of writing tutor to be the best fit for her, continuing a similar job she had in undergrad. She says, “I wasn’t interested in taking a role quite as involved as TA’ing, but I still liked working with students in a one-on-one environment. The job also definitely gave me a better sense of the college—which can be hard when you’re a grad student who lives off campus.”

The process to become a writing tutor varies from school to school, so check with your college's writing center to learn about the requirements necessary for the role.

2. Become a TA

One of the more popular job options for grad students is becoming a teacher’s assistant in the area of your choice. Where or not you’re looking into teaching post-college, this is a great opportunity to learn from a professor and delve into a subject.

Additionally, you’ll be able to gain valuable experience in a leadership role, overseeing students’ papers and tests and even leading discussion sections for a lecture class. There is no question that this type of job will appear strong on a resume and act as a great talking point in an interview.

Medical student Diana Liu, who previously taught high school English, became a TA because she missed traching. She says, "Some benefits of being a TA include reinforcing recently acquired knowledge and working with a fantastic group of people who are as passionate about the learning process as the subject matter."

3. Conduct research for a professor

Research opportunities can sometimes be hard to find, but are available if you seek them out.

Talk to a favorite former professor or a different professor in your department to see if you can assist them on a project of theirs; oftentimes, they will have paid opportunities that might be time consuming, but are worthwhile in acting as an additional educational resource and enhancing your grad school experience. These types of positions are also listed on your college's on-campus jobs website.

4. Apply for a co-op or apprenticeship

While pursuing a graduate degree, it's important to gain some real world experience in that field to set yourself up for full-time employment by graduation. Co-ops and apprenticeships are a great opportunity to bring your newfound knowledge from the classroom into the office.

Depending on the school, co-ops and apprenticeships differ from internships in the sense that they often demand more of your time and may replace either a course or an entire semester's worth of classes. The types of experiences for pay will vary, ranging from full-time employment for a corporation to assisting a professor with an intensive research project.

In grad school, it might seem as though you have no time for anything besides schoolwork. However, if job seeking is a priority, there are opportunities at every school to broaden your skill set and build upon what you learn in the classroom.

If Picasso and Emily Dickinson had a daughter, maybe she’d be something like Aria Montgomery because this girl seriously has more creative bones in her body than we ever thought possible. She’s definitely the most reserved of all the liars. Then again, maybe it’s for the best, considering her writing, photography and fashion choices are as loud as ever (remind us later to contact her for notes on mixing prints)! It’s safe to say Aria probably doesn’t belong in this era or dimension.

Sure, every friend group relies on powerhouses like the genius that is Spencer Hastings and the queen bee that is Alison DiLaurentis. But a clique couldn’t survive without someone as adorable as Aria to combat all of the tension. Everyone Is Saying This Show Is the Next 'Gossip Girl'

If you’re anything like us, you’ve been mourning the loss of our beloved Upper East Siders for the past five years. Gossip Girl was a show that captured a huge audience, depicting the intriguingly turbulent and oh-so-scandalous lives of the beautifully rich Serena van der Woodsen and her posse of gossip guys and gals. When the show ended, we were devastated. What would we do without our weekly dose of Upper East Side glamour?!

It looks like all these years later there’s a new show coming to town that may take Gossip Girl’s place as the most binge-worthy socialite show. According to Deadline, HBO has the rights to Prep, a TV adaptation of Curtis Sittenfeld’s popular novel of the same name published in 2005 by Random House. It follows a Midwestern girl, Lee Fiora, as she transfers to Ault Academy, an elite boarding school in New England.

The show is sure to be funny, with former 30 Rock writer and producer Colleen McGuiness stepping in to write and executive produce. Games of Thrones producer Carolyn Strauss will also be an executive producer.

As comical as we expect the show to be, it looks like Prep will also be handling some tough issues. Sexual identity, mental health, drug abuse and racial and sexual discrimination are themes that filled the pages of the book, so it’s likely we’ll be seeing some of the same topics crop up in the TV adaptation.

Sittenfeld’s novel is known for accurately capturing the teen voice, so we can only hope that the show will follow suit. It will be especially interesting to enter this world of elite prep school life from the perspective of an outsider; Lee isn’t from the boarding school circle, so she’s experiencing everything just as we are, without any idea what’s going on, which makes her sound pretty relatable.

Most of the details surrounding the HBO series haven’t been disclosed yet, so there are still a lot of questions about Prep. Can we expect Blair Waldorf-esque characters ruining the social lives of boarding school girls? Gorgeous It girls like Serena on the scene? We can definitely assume that gossip and teenage-centered problems will be on the menu, but beyond that, Prep remains a bit of a mystery. Whether it measures up to the show it’s being compared to or not, it's safe to say that with all this buzz Prep will be drawing in viewers. After this long Gossip Girl drought, we can only hope it’s worth the hype.

Pat McGrath, a British makeup artist who is arguably one of the most influential makeup artists in the world today, is about to drop a new kit later this month. Hitting stores on April 22, Dark Star 006 is a seven-piece smoky eye kit that comes with mesmerizing colors, eye gloss, a kohl liner, and even a custom blending brush. Which sounds awesome enough as is, until Pat dropped this on her Instagram last week:

Slightly eerie, but also super intriguing: who is she?!? And what in the world is this for?!?

Well, Pat didn't tell us what exactly this is for, but she did reveal who the mysterious "most beautiful of them all" is:

And somewhat predictably (although I didn't guess correctly), "the most beautiful of all" is none other than Kim K. So, here's what we know: Pat McGrath is doing something epic to promote her latest eye kit, it will feature both Kim and Kanye (hell yes!!), and whatever it is will be revealed tonight at 7 p.m. on E! News. This is probably just some elaborate marketing scheme to get us hype for the new products, but even if it is, it's totally working.

If you need me, I'll be watching E! tonight to find out what this is all about!

Sarah Hyland's New Bleach Blonde Hair Is The Perfect Spring Inspiration

It's finally spring, which means flowers are blooming, birds are singing, and hair is getting lighter. Winter tends to be the time when people go darker with their hair, whereas warm weather brings about lots of highlights and lighter looks. Spring is also the perfect time to switch up your 'do and break out of the sad, cold person that we all turn into in the winter (at least, that's how we are here in Indiana).

Sarah Hyland, star of ABC's show Modern Family, switched up her look by going full-out blonde this week. Her hair has been getting lighter throughout the years, but this is the first time she's done a true platinum look. She was spotted in West Hollywood sporting her new hair color (and a super cute outfit, might I add):

Sarah has darker hair naturally, but switches it up frequently, and seems to pull off every look amazingly. Last summer, she even went red, and somehow still looked just as good as she always does!??

I don't think I could ever pull off red hair (read: I definitely can't), but Sarah's latest color has me thinking that it's time to switch up my look too. After all, it's almost summer, and blondes have way more fun and stuff, right? Maybe?
