3 Personal Styling Sites That Are Totally Worth the Money

$

0

Who wouldn’t love having someone pick out a bunch of cute clothes and send it to them? Lucky for us, we live in a world where we can pay a service to actually do this! How does this work, you may ask? It’s actually pretty easy.

For most personal styling sites, you just go to their website and fill out a quick style survey, including your different clothing sizes. Then, you’ll receive a box in the mail with different clothes for you to try on in the comfort of your own home. Just think, with these personal styling services you may never have to try on clothes in a badly lit dressing room again. But, the question is are these services actually worth the money? We’ve asked around, and here’s what we’ve found out.

StitchFix

As far as personal styling sites go, StitchFix might be one of the most popular. When you join their subscription service, you get to take a style survey asking about your preferences when it comes to fashion. This way they can send you pieces you would actually wear.

Kristen Perrone, a senior at Siena College, started using StitchFix because the clothes she was finding in stores wasn’t matching her style. It was her mom who told her about StitchFix. “I decided to try it out and was pleasantly surprised when I liked it as much as I did!” she says. “I usually find the items they send pretty fitting of what I like.”

For a $20 styling fee per box, you get 5 clothing pieces. Here’s the deal, though, if you want any items of clothing in the box, you have pay for it in addition to the styling fee. If you don’t want any or all of the pieces, you can send it back without having to pay for them. If you do choose to buy all items in the box, you get a 25 percent discount. Like Kristen, though, you can set it up so you don’t receive a box every month if that’s not something your budget can handle. Instead, she receives a box every few months. With this set-up, Kristen finds StitchFix is definitely worth the price.

SuitableYou

Like StitchFix, SuitableYou is a subscription service that sends you five pieces of clothing based off of what you tell them in your style survey for a $20 styling fee plus the price of the clothes you choose to keep. The discount for keeping all the clothes in your box is only 20 percent here, though. But to make up for that, they also will give you a 10 percent discount for only keeping three or four items.

HC’s associate editor Iris Goldsztajn tried their service for the first time a few months ago. “It was honestly a fair price, with mid-range clothing and a fast and efficient service,” she says. “I will say it’s not for everyone – if you’re particularly picky, you should probably just stick with shopping for yourself!”

So if you like experimenting with your look, then this service is worth a shot.

Trunk Club

With Trunk Club, you’ll also receive a subscription box with five items of clothing in it. Unlike the other services, though, there is no styling fee. After you take the style survey online and talk to your stylist even further about what you like, you’ll receive your box and have five days to try on the clothes. The items you choose will have a $25 try-on fee applied to them. Rachel Medlock, the blogger behind Wayfaring Rachel, has tried a bunch of different online styling subscription services, and she finds Trunk Club to offer the best bang-for-your-buck.

“You can easily communicate your budget to your stylist,” she says. “Some of the more affordable brands carried by Trunk Club (like Topshop) are still very much on trend and of good quality. Most people use a styling service to get professional advice and a curated selection, rather than digging through rack after rack to find something that works for their body. Trunk Club has plenty of affordable brands that still give you this benefit.”

Rachel also says that Trunk Club is good for at styling younger people, along with understanding that our style will evolve over time.

“The service has pushed me to try trends I wouldn’t have picked for myself, but I’m also confident that as I change my style Trunk Club will be able to change with me,” she says. “For college students this could include more interviews, fancy dates, work clothes, etc. in the next few years.”

Trunk Club keeps track of all the items you’ve purchased, Rachel says, so your stylist will create outfits based on the purchases you’ve already made. Sign us up!

When it comes down to it, these services are a lot of fun if you have some money to blow and a desire to try out some new clothes. Let’s be real, being able to shop and try on clothes without leaving the house is the dream.

Chrissy Teigen's 12 Best Style Moments Ever

Chrissy Teigen's style game is undebatably perfect. She has her go-to street style, sticking to many basic, comfortable pieces. Teigen knows what looks best on her, and doesn't let the trends of the month distract her. However, for red carpet events, she tends to take more risks, diving head-first into her personal style.

These looks will give you some serious style inspiration, and may even encourage you to work on your signature look.

1. Dressed-Up Plaid

I love how Teigen uses a sleek coat, booties and some mirrored shades to take this comfy-looking plaid from loungewear to streetwear.

2. Hamptons Babe

This all-white ensemble just screams "vacation." The matching leather belt and shoes help to make the outfit more mature and put-together.

3. Going Out Goddess

Teigen opted for these fun sparkly pants instead of a traditional dress or skirt for a fun (and probably more comfortable!) going out look.

4. Casual Sunday

I don’t know what I want more… this adorable denim romper or the puppy!

5. Bootsfor Days

Teigen demonstrates that the quickest way to dress up a casual summer look of denim shorts and a tank top is with a pair of statement tall boots!

6. A+ Maternity Style

This velvet pink duster coats gives the classic nude bodycon dress a unique feel.

7. Fun With Shapes

Teigen demonstrates that when wearing pants with a loose shape, it's best to pair them with a tight top to balance your figure.

8. Airport Chic

OMG… it is possible to look amazing and still be comfortable at the airport. Who knew? These celebs did, but, like, I didn't.

9. Perfect in Prints

Teigen is anything but basic in this printed coat, which she pairs with a classic white dress and strappy nude heels to make quite the statement.

10. Red Carpet-Ready

Is this a top? A coat? Both? I'll probably never know, but I love it anyway.

11. Model Behavior

All I can say is that I hope I look that good when I’m a mom.

12. Cali Dream

This outfit makes me wish that summer (and summer fashion!) could come even sooner!

Kendrick Lamar Loves Stretch Marks, & Twitter Loves Him for Loving Them

In an age of Photoshop and air brushing, seeing stretch marks in a famous rapper's music video is, well, refreshing. Kendrick Lamar dropped a new song and music video, "HUMBLE.", last night, and he raps about how he wants a natural woman (skip to 1:44 if you want to go directly there).

We see a woman bouncing between being made-up and looking natural while Lamar raps, "I'm so fuckin' sick and tired of the Photoshop/Show me somethin' natural like afro on Richard Pryor/Show me somethin' natural like ass with some stretch marks/Still will take you down right on your mama's couch in Polo socks, ayy."

Twitter loved these lyrics, and many people shared their positive reactions.

We love this body positivity. New Friday anthem, anyone?

According to VarietyBeyoncé is Jon Favreau's first pick to voice Nala in the live-action remake of The Lion King.

Who better to play Queen of the Jungle than Queen Bey herself? Donald Glover is already set to voice Simba, and the ball is in Beyoncé's court regarding her part in the remake.

"Insiders stress that the Grammy winner has not made a decision regarding the film yet, as the star is pregnant with twins,"Variety says. "But since it’s a voice-acting role, sources say the studio and director will do whatever it takes to accommodate her schedule."

We hope it works out. Something about Beyoncé as a lion is just so empowering.

Mike Pence Voted to Break a Tie to Allow States to Defund Planned Parenthood

Vice President Mike Pence cast a tie-breaking vote in the Senate to pass a bill allowing states to defund Planned Parenthood and other abortion-providing health clinics on Thursday.

Buzzfeed reports two Republicans, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, voted against the legislation along with all of the Senate’s Democrats. Another Republican, Johnny Isakson of Georgia, came to the Senate in a wheelchair recovering from back surgery to support the bill.

This left the vote up to Pence, who broke the tie, sending the bill to President Trump’s desk. President Trump is expected to sign the bill into law.

The bill would roll back yet another Obama-era rule that stopped states from withholding funds from clinics that provided abortions, according to NBC News. The rule went into effect two days before Obama left office in a last-minute effort to protect Planned Parenthood.

“We’re talking about federal family planning funds and I don’t think that those funds should be subjected to state restrictions,” Collins told POLITICO. “It’s important to recognize that there is already a bar against using federal funds for abortion and that bar stays in effect. That’s a prohibition that I personally support, but I’m a strong supporter of family planning funds.”

Many users took to Twitter to voice their discontent with the vote and inform others of the services Planned Parenthood and other such clinics provide besides abortion.

More Millennials Than You Would Think Believe Men Should Be Breadwinners & Women Should Stay Home

$

A new study has found that more millennials support traditional family dynamics than the previous generation, The New York Times reports.

According to research conducted by sociologists Joanna Pepin and David Cotter, the proportion of young people holding progressive or egalitarian views about gender relationships has fallen since the mid-1990s. In 1994, 42 percent of high school seniors agreed that the best family included a male bread-winner and a woman taking care of the home. In 2014, 58 percent of seniors said this was true.

While more than 90 percent of millennials believe women should have “exactly” the same opportunities as men in business and politics, their views become significantly more traditional when it comes to home life, Quartz reports.

A separate research study strengthens these findings—in 1994, 16 percent of young adults believed a woman’s place was in the home. By 2014, that figure has risen to 25 percent.

Pepin and Cotter believe these attitudes come from growing support for the idea that women should have equal opportunities at work and face no discrimination, but that women will naturally choose different opportunities from men based on their ‘differences’, Quartz reported.

Although there is nothing inherently wrong with a woman (or a man) choosing to stay in the home, it’s slightly alarming to think that our generation has become more close-minded to different relationship types and a woman’s ability and right to have a successful career while still being a wife.

The World's Strongest Coffee Is Now Sold in the U.S.

Anyone who consumes excess amounts of coffee (a.k.a. pretty much every college student ever), knows that you eventually need more and more caffeine in order to feel that same productive, getting shit done-level coffee buzz. And while Starbucks has previously been our go-to cup of joe, this coffee brand that's claiming to be the world's strongest just may be what our coffee-addicted selves have been looking for.

Food & Wine reports that South African coffee brand Black Insomnia is now available in the United States for the first time - and if you're thinking it's just another bag of coffee beans, well, not quite. Black Insomnia claims that its coffee is the most caffeinated in the world - ringing in at 702 milligrams per 12 ounce cup. For comparison, the average 12 ounce cup of black coffee is somewhere around 105 milligrams. Yes, you read that right: this stuff is seven times the amount of caffeine you're probably drinking on the reg.

Black Insomnia definitely isn't for the faint of heart, though - especially when, as Mashable reports, the average recommended amount of caffeine per day for an adult is 400 milligrams. But if anyone can take on Black Insomnia, honestly, it's probably a college student. (But seriously, moderation is likely key here.)

Like pretty much everything else we buy (guilty), Black Insomnia is available on Amazon for $19.99 a bag in the event that you're planning any all-nighters in the near future.

This Is Matthew Perry's Favorite Chandler Joke From 'Friends'

$

There are few shows that we've watched over and over again and still somehow, never manage to get tired of - and Friends is definitely one of them. (How did we survive during those ~dark~ days before we could binge it on Netflix?)

The only thing we love more than the iconic '90s sitcom? Hearing the Friends actors talk reminisce on it. Luckily for us, Matthew Perry, who played the sarcastic, witty Chandler, appeared on Good Morning America Thursday. Amongst other topics, Perry revealed his favorite Chandler one-liner (yeah, we're wondering how he picked *only* one too) to the show's host Lara Spencer.

Perry's favorite Chandler moment is from season two, in the episode "The One With Ross's New Girlfriend." As Joey is recommending his favorite tailor to Chandler, in typical Joey fashion, he gets a little sidetracked.

Joey says, "He did my first suit when I was 15... No, wait, 16... No, excuse me, 15... All right, when was 1990?" Never afraid to call out his roommate (which normally completely flys right over Joey's head), Chandler responds with, "Okay. You have to stop the Q-Tip when there's RESISTANCE."

Honestly, is there a show that makes us laugh harder? Probably not. While on GMA, Perry also admitted what we were all thinking, saying that he missed the show. Aww.

How to Make Your Extracurriculars Sound Best on Your Resume

$

Collegiettes often spend endless amounts of time working on extracurriculars. Maybe you’re sleeping in the newspaper office or spending your entire weekend drafting student government legislation. Maybe you’re planning in-depth events for your sorority or forgoing sleep to plan a fundraiser for a club.

resume desk work

Whatever the case, you pour serious time into your out-of-class activities, and that should come across on your resume. The problem is, as collegiettes we often miss this point when describing our activities outside the classroom. We gloss over the information employers really want and fail to communicate how professional our experience really is.

Don’t stress, though! HC is here. We spoke with Angel Wood, a career development counselor at Appalachian State University, and brought in real resumes from collegiettes to see how they could be improved. Here are her tips on how to genuinely reflect the time and effort you put in outside of class.

Problem #1 - You assume people know what you do

Many girls’ resumes have one essential problem: they’re entirely too vague. Often, being concise is a concern, but one or two lines of information is not enough. “Don’t assume people know how you work,” Wood says. Employers don’t know what the deputy executive treasurer does, so make sure you’re giving a description of your position and duties. Try to pull out your accomplishments as well. Did you have 10 articles on the front page of your campus magazine? Include that. Did you bring the business club to a first-place win in a national competition for the first time! Always pull out numbers—tell employers if you increased your club’s web traffic by 50 percent or raised $1,000 for a local nonprofit. And remember to discuss your progression. If you started out as treasurer and eventually became president, make sure that’s reflected on your resume.

The resume:
Member, Alpha Phi Sorority
“I serve as the Panhellenic Delegate on the Executive Council of my sorority.”

The problem:
What does a Panhellenic Delegate do? People outside the Greek system—even people outside your specific organization—likely have no idea.

The fix:
Panhellenic Delegate, Alpha Phi Sorority

  • Serve as ambassador between sorority’s executive council and university’s full Panhellenic council
  • Present philanthropy events to Panhellenic council to solicit support
  • Built partnership with four other organizations for philanthropy event which raised $1,500

selling yourself getting a job money

Problem #2 - You forget to sell yourself

The entire point of a resume is to sell yourself, so what skills are you selling? Think about your assets and the assets employers are looking for. Think about the communication skills you gained. Did you manage anyone? Did you work with diverse groups of people? Include that experience. “I think people, if they’re an officer in a club or organization, often forget about the supervision piece and the training piece. Those are big ones and people downplay them,” Wood says. In addition to leadership, think about writing and marketing skills. Did you do informal PR for your organization: posters mocked up in InDesign, announcements made in your classes, newsletters? All of that is valuable experience. Think about your event-planning experience and what went into it. Did you plan a sorority social or an alumni event? What experience did you gain? And make sure you include any phone or networking skills as well. If you’ve worked with donors, alumni or university leadership, that’s taught you to maintain professionalism and interact with people who are in a different place in their life than you and employers want to know.

The resume:
Member, Campus Christian Fellowship

  • Worked on fundraising team for organization
  • Attended twice-weekly meetings

The problem:
The resume above offers no marketable skills to employers. They have no idea what you did on the fundraising team, and probably don’t care much about the twice-weekly meetings you attended.

The fix:
Fundraiser, Campus Christian Fellowship

  • Solicited local businesses for donations
  • Designed promotional materials using Adobe Illustrator and InDesign
  • Wrote press releases which were picked up for publication in four local media outlets
  • Helped plan auction which raised $2,000 for organization

Problem #3 - You forget about scale and detail

One of the biggest problems with the resumes Wood looked over was the lack of specifics. When you’re crafting the document yourself, make sure to include numbers, figures, lists and anything that gives an employer a clear picture of what you did. Include the number of people you supervised directly. For each position, make a list of the computer programs (like the Adobe Creative Suite or Microsoft Excel) you used and mastered. List the number of events you planned, the number of articles you wrote or the amount of money you raised. “It’s not that you have to delve into great detail, but don’t make people assume,” Wood says.

The resume:
Senior News Reporter - Student Newspaper

  • Established mastery of AP style
  • Improved interview and communication skills
  • Learned how to work with group of people

The problem:
What was the scale of your work as a reporter for your student newspaper? How much did you write? How many people did you manage, if any?

The fix:
Try something more like this…
Senior News Reporter - Student Newspaper

  • Wrote two articles per deadline, two deadlines per week
  • Reported on town/courts and student government association
  • Managed assignments for two intern news reporters
  • Contributed around 50 published and bylined articles per semester

Problem #4 - You underestimate how much you’ve done

Likely the biggest problem with collegietteTM resumes is how much they just plain leave out. Wood says she’s spoken with students who left fundraising teams, club presidencies and sorority or fraternity leadership positions off their resumes. The advice here is simple: don’t do that! Sit down with friends and family for a brainstorm of your college experience. Often, they’ll come up with an addition you never would have considered. If you worked hard, it’s very likely that you gained experience, so don’t automatically assume a position should be left off. And make sure to visit your college’s career center so they can help you emphasize and articulate your strengths in the best way, along with helping you understand which activities are best included on your resume.

The resume:
Extracurricular Activities - University Chorale, Gamma Beta Phi

The problem:
The resumes above listed a music group and an honor society in one line on a resume. The problem was, the student was the treasurer of her choir and participated in a ton of service projects through Gamma Beta Phi. That’s all valuable experience!

The fix:
Treasurer, University Chorale

  • Handled monthly dues and deposits for 75-member group

Member, Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society

  • Participated in multiple service projects, including monthly cleanup of New River
  • Initiated new partnership with local Habitat for Humanity

Problem #5 - You’re not using the “right” words

Word choice makes a huge difference and can make it obvious that you’re a young professional ready to enter your industry, or that you’re not. If you’re in journalism, for example, make sure you’re “pitching” seven articles a week, not “coming up with ideas.” You’re “editing” copy, not “proof-reading” it. And you’re “fact-checking” at your magazine internship, not “researching.” There are similar buzzwords across all industries, and keeping up with them shows that you’ll know your stuff when you arrive on a company’s doorstep. Have a professor or another professional in your industry look over your industry and make sure you’re using the right terminology for your trade.

The resume:
Social Media Coordinator, Circle K

  • Managed Twitter, Facebook accounts for 200-member club
  • Increased web traffic by 25 percent, Facebook fans by 200, Twitter followers by 275
  • Made website using Joomla
  • Compiled list of links clicked on, websites leading to our site

The problem:
Whoops—no! While the detail here is great, that’s nowhere near the terminology used in the social media biz. You need to make it clear that you’re familiar with your industry!

The fix:
Social Media Coordinator, Circle K

  • Managed Twitter, Facebook accounts for 200-member club
  • Increased web traffic by 25 percent, Facebook fans by 200, Twitter followers by 275
  • Built website using Joomla
  • Turned in monthly report of clicks and referrers

Ultimately, the goal of a resume is to sump of your experience for a potential employer: clearly, concisely and in good detail. Make sure those bullet points for your extracurriculars accomplish that goal and make sure your hard work is understood and appreciated.
