Selena Gomez Opening Up About Mental Health Makes Me Feel Closer to Her Than Ever

The opinions expressed in this article are the author's own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.

Selena Gomez has been a trending topic, making headlines for her new romance and even avant-garde airport style. But, truth be told, Gomez doesn’t love all of the attention she’s been getting. In fact, in the April issue of Vogue, Gomez shares that she can’t wait for people to just forget about her.

If you haven’t been following Gomez recently, you’re probably wondering where this is all coming from. I mean, surely someone with over 113 million followers on Instagram would love the attention. But, as Gomez’s April Vogue cover story reveals, the singer’s anxiety and depression became so overwhelming that she needed to take a timeout, both in life and on Instagram.

Gomez’s fans noticed this three-month break in 'grams too, and they couldn't help but miss her. I mean, it’s impossible not to love Gomez. We’ve watched her grow up, as Alex on Wizards of Waverly Place, and then followed her along as she grew into the outspoken musician she is today.

So, when Gomez took a break from her Revival tour last October to check into rehab, fans, including myself, were left in shock.

Now that her treatment is over, Gomez is ready to tell fans what her journey has really been like. In her interview with Vogue, Gomez revealed that she felt very lonely on tour. “My self-esteem was shot. I was depressed, anxious. I started to have panic attacks right before getting onstage, or right after leaving the stage. Basically I felt I wasn’t good enough, wasn’t capable.” That is the vulnerability that fans are attracted to with Gomez; her ability to take a step back and admit that she needs help.

In a tearful section, Gomez shares that she used to ask fans to raise their pinkies and make a promise to never allow anybody to convince them or make them feel like they weren’t good enough. But, now that her shows attract an older crowd, which means alcohol and smoking, she felt like she couldn’t do that anymore. “It doesn’t work that way, and I know it because I’m dealing with the same shit they’re dealing with. What I wanted to say is that life is so stressful, and I get the desire to just escape it. But I wasn’t figuring my own stuff out, so I felt I had no wisdom to share. And so maybe I thought everybody out there was thinking, ‘This is a waste of time.’” As a long-time Gomez fan, this section tugged at my heartstrings.

Truthfully, I feel like I’ve been cheering Gomez on throughout what feels like most of my life and hers. And, this incredibly raw realization hit home because, I was that pre-teen singing along to “Who Says” in the car with her mom and two friends on the way to our first high school CYO dance.

Now, six years later, finishing up my junior year at the University of South Carolina, I would probably be one of those fans enjoying a drink in the crowd. That’s why that analogy feels all too real. There’s this reminder of how quickly life moves on. One minute you’re young and your biggest problem is who to sit next to at lunch and then, suddenly, you’re 21 and trying to maneuver your first real relationship or your blossoming career, unclear as to what your future might actually hold. In that moment, I felt so connected with Gomez. Suddenly, her and I, we weren’t that different.

As the interview continued, Gomez said that she also struggled with staying in the moment, until recently, “It feels like I don’t have to be holding my breath and waiting for somebody to judge a piece of work that I’m doing. I’m not eager to chase a moment. I don’t think there’s a moment for me to chase.”

I think this interview was the piece of Gomez we’ve all been waiting for. Gomez has been one of the most real celebrities, acknowledging that in the interview by pointing out her onstage performances, “I’ve cried onstage more times than I can count, and I’m not a cute crier.” That unfiltered glimpse into Gomez’s life is what fans, like myself, love.

At the end of the day, Gomez is right. She’s there, with us, in the middle of life, on the verge of a new and uncertain stage. But, she’s showing us actively that it’s okay to stumble and it’s okay to ask for help. But most importantly, it’s okay to give back to yourself to make sure that you’re doing well, and not just when it comes to your career or grades.

This message rings true for a number of reasons, but especially now, in an era where women are encouraged to be their own boss. Sometimes that pressure can feel like too much. Like, we’re expected to be a kick-ass businesswoman, doting girlfriend, supportive friend and loving family member. Oh yeah, all while kicking ass in school, creating an impenetrable network and shocking the world while we’re at it on social media.

People forget to mention that it is okay to be vulnerable and focus on yourself and your wellbeing. And that, is exactly what Gomez’s interview with Vogue allowed me to do, to admit that I don’t have life worked out, and that, craziest of all, I’ll probably still be okay.

13 Things You'll Only Understand if Harry Potter Is Your Everything

We all love Harry Potter, but only some of us are true series-reading, movie-watching, still-waiting-for-our-Hogwarts-letter type of fans. For the latter, Harry Potter will live on forever and J.K. Rowling will always have a special place in your heart. Do you think you qualify as a Harry Potter enthusiast? Check out below for all of the things that you will only understand if Harry Potter is your everything:

Hearing the phrase "you know who" and immediately thinking about Voldemort

You just can't help it.

The importance of clearing your schedule when a Harry Potter movie marathon is on TV

Thank you, Freeform.

Epic.

January 14, 2016

Rest in peace, Alan Rickman.

Harry and Ginny were destined from the beginning

Ron and Hermione, too.

Dudley Dursley changed by the end of the series—at least, a little bit

By the end of the books, that is. However, the redeeming moment was cut from the movie (and we kind of wish it wasn't).

Voldemort is almost a direct descendant of Salazar Slytherin

And incest was big in his family.

S.P.E.W.

It helped save magical creatures and was the REAL reason behind Ron and Hermione's first kiss.

The nerdy guy always deserves a chance

Neville Longbottom: the only proof you will ever need.

Peter Pettigrew made it far too long into the series

But, we will try not to question it.

Non-magical people can be born into magical families

And they are usually upset about it—hello, Filch? No wonder he is so grumpy all the time.

The movies completely fail to explain the Half-Blood Prince

The details of Snape and his past are worth more than 10 minutes at the end of the sixth film.

The movies completely fail to explain a lot of things...

St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies, Animagi, the Sphinx and so much more—honestly, people. Just read the damn books.

These Photos From Rachel's First Night as The Bachelorette Will Make You Forget Nick Ever Existed

Is it May 22 yet? Filming for Rachel Lindsay’s season of The Bachelorette began Thursday, and while it doesn't necessarily make the time pass any faster, the show's boss, Mike Fleiss, live-tweeted pictures from the night’s events.

One pic features Rachel in a limo, preparing to exit and begin her journey to find love.

Another shows Lindsay in a gorgeous full-length white gown (anyone else getting bridal vibes?) alongside host Chris Harrison and other crew members.

We also got a glimpse at some of her suitors. They're all dapperly dressed (no outrageous costumes in sight), and it appears to be a diverse group. Is one of these guys Rachel's future husband? We’ll just have to wait for the season—and the drama—to unfold.

The Texas lawyer already met several contestants on the live After the Final Rose special that followed the Bachelor finale on Monday.

There was DeMario, who presented her with tickets to Vegas and a ring. Blake opened with “You smell good.” Dean said he’s “ready to go black, and I'm never going to go back.” And finally Eric, who showed off some of his dance moves. What winners!

“I am ready. I was a little skeptical before—I think everyone saw that,” Rachel told Chris Harrison during ATFR. “But to go through what I went through and to turn that over and become a believer, I’m so ready to get my season started and so ready for my own opportunity.”

This Woman Turned Her Skin Condition Into Art & It's BEAUTIFUL

If you or anyone you know deals with skin conditions such as vitiligo, then you know that it can be difficult to embrace your differences when the rest of the world seems to have decided that there is a "perfect" body that everyone should have. Vitiligo is a condition wherein patches of skin lose their pigment, which looks different on every individual affected by it.

Ashley Soto, who was bullied as a child for her noticeable difference in skin pigmentation, spent many years covering up her skin to avoid being mocked. But instead of allowing bullies to dictate how she felt about her body, she learned to embrace her differences through art. "I never realized how beautiful my vitiligo was until I traced it with a black marker, it really helps to bring out the different colours of my skin," she said in an interview with the Daily Mail. Once she discovered how amazing the patches looked when outlined, Soto started looking for what beautiful shapes and patterns she could find in her own skin.

"This was so much fun to do; finding little patterns and seeing that you truly are ART...I encourage everyone with #vitiligo or whatever you might have to find the positive in every situation and not let the negative thoughts cloud your mind," she wrote in her first Instagram post of her traced skin.

A post shared by Ash Soto (@radiantbambi) on

But she didn't just stop at tracing—oh no, she decided to turn her designs into full-on artwork. As in, world maps and flowers and even Van Gogh's freaking "Starry Night" painting, for crying out loud. How awesome is this??

I can't even paint that well in a wine and canvas class, so I think that this body artwork is truly amazing. And the fact that Ash is doing this using the very thing she was once made fun of for makes it that much better.

Ash Soto isn't the only person with vitiligo who is helping to build awareness and encourage body positivity. Canadian model Winnie Harlow, who was featured in Beyoncé's "Lemonade" video, also has this same rare skin condition. These women are doing an amazing job of showing the world that your "differences" are NEVER something you should be ashamed of.

I think Ash's Instagram bio sums it all up perfectly. It reads: "Ash Soto, the girl with the world painted on her body." She's shown us that she's not just a girl with the skin condition, she's SO much more. And that is even more beautiful than her body art itself.

This Girl Applied a Full Face of Makeup... On a Motorcycle

If you've ever attempted to do your makeup in the car, then you probably have experienced something like this at least once in your lifetime:

Unfortunately, I tend to overestimate my multitasking abilities, and have ended up with a mascara wand in the eye more times than I care to admit from this scenario (I don't recommend it). But that certainly didn't stop Anne Custodio, a Phillipines-based beauty daredevil (apparently), from doing her makeup while sitting on top of a motorcycle sidecar... while it was moving!!

This certainly sounds impressive, but also dangerous AF. So this is definitely one of those tricks that you probably shouldn't try at home. But Custodio filmed the entire (six-minute!!) process, and shared the video with the world, which has now gone viral (rightfully so).

What's most impressive about this feat is that she did a full face of makeup as well as her hair! I can't even be bothered to do my hair on a normal day in my bathroom, let alone doing it atop a motor vehicle. Anne Custodio has certainly earned mad respect from me.

Trump Just Released His First Major Budget Proposal & It Is Not Good For Low-Income Americans

Trump has released a new budget proposal, and it leaves low-income American people in the dust.

On Thursday, President Trump released a $1.15 trillion budget proposal named "America First." It outlines a $54 billion increase in defense spending, cuts to non-defense spending in various departments and the complete elimination of other federal programs.

“We are going to do more with less, and make the government lean and accountable to the people,” Trump said, according to Fox News.

CNN reports the blueprint released Thursday morning proposes significant cuts—reducing EPA funds by 31 percent, State Department funds by 28 percent and Department of Housing and Urban Development funds by 13.2 percent. Trump also proposed completely eliminating funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the National Endowment for the Arts and the United States Institute of Peace, to name a few.The proposal only covers discretionary spending, not mandatory spending, according to The Washington Post.

The most problematic of all the cuts are the ones to programs that would provide assistance to low-income Americans in all areas. The Post reports that Trump's budget plan would slash programs that aid Americans with affordable housing, banking, weatherizing homes, job training, paying home heating oil bills and getting legal counsel in civil matters.

According to the Post, during his presidential campaign, Trump said that giving poor people incentives to work was the key to solving poverty—but fast-forward a year and his proposal would cut the programs aimed at helping the working poor and unemployed Americans.

The budget also calls for cuts in funding to multinational organizations such as the World Bank, which would lose $650 million in funding. This aligns with Trump’s statement that his blueprint would include “deep cuts to foreign aid."

Some Twitter users are noting the irony between "America First" and Trump's slogan of "Make America Great Again" and his proposed cuts, particularly to the "Meals on Wheels" program that provides food to elderly, impovershed citizens.

“It’s time to prioritize the security and well-being of Americans, and to ask the rest of the world to step up and pay its fair share,” Trump said, as The Guardian reports.

Fox Newsreports that the proposal also aims for an immediate $1.4 billion of funds allocated to Trump’s southern border wall and another $2.6 billion planned for the 2018 budget year.

“This is a hard power budget, not a soft power budget,” Mick Mulvaney, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, said according to CNN.

Liam Payne Just Called Cheryl His Dream Girl, & OMG We Can't Stop Swooning

Liam Payne and girlfriend Cheryl have kept pretty quiet about their relationship. But now Liam is breaking his silence, opening up to Rollacoaster magazine about Cheryl, who's expecting the couple's first child.

A post shared by Liam Payne (@liampayne) on

Liam and Cheryl began dating late last year but first met in 2010 when Payne was competing on The X Factor.

It seems they’ve definitely kept the romance alive. According to The Sun, Liam told Rollacoaster, “Obviously I have the most beautiful girlfriend in the world and she’s absolutely amazing. She’s been my dream girl since I was younger. She’s so ace.”

Oh my god, did he just say "ace"? Excuse me while I go add Brittish accent to my must-have list for potential husbands. Swoon.

His admiration for her might even be better than his accent because what’s better than a man who supports his girl? “She is a wonderful, wonderful person and it’s amazing to have someone who can relate to so much of things—someone who’s taken greater steps than me. Her solo career was amazing. She’s been in the industry for 14 years now.”

This happy couple is about to get that much happier, though. They’ve got a baby on the way, super exciting news that has yet to be officially announced. But in February, fans got a peek at Cheryl’s baby bump in a photo shoot for L’Oreal and The Prince’s Trust.

Liam is just 23, so he’s still learning the ropes when it comes to welcoming a baby into the world. But thankfully he has the help of Cheryl, 33. “She fully supports me. We’re super happy. It’s a very personal, precious time for us.”

How much longer do we have to wait for baby Payne to arrive?

The 5 Best Moments from Japril the Sequel

Japril has won over our hearts for years, and last night's episode of Grey's Anatomy just proved our love for them. Many people have a love-hate relationship with the couple, but I personally love them and their relationship.

Lately the two have had some issues, and Jackson definitely wasn't happy when April joined him on the trip to Montana to visit a patient. After they got to Montana, Jackson paid a visit to a local bar, which (spoiler alert) his birth father owns. After learning his father was still alive after all these years, Jackson got drunk and didn't even bother to introduce himself to his dad.

Last night's episode was a whirlwind, that's for sure. Japril slept together, Jackson found his dad, and Jackson and April proved to be a good team. This episode focused on how many problems Jackson and April have, but the fact that they're kinda back together makes me more than excited. Here are the five best moments from #JaprilTheSequel.

When they worked as a team to help the patient

These two are incredibly smart and the fact that they could put their personal problems aside to help their patient is wonderful.

When they slept together

FINALLY.

When April encouraged him

Jackson gained the courage to speak to his father after all these years, and April definitely helped him with that.

When Jackson found his father

This was shocking. Also, his dad was a total jerk. No wonder Jackson wanted nothing to do with him.

When Jackson opened up to the patient's parents

He used his personal experiences to talk some sense into the parents. This was amazing. Not gonna lie, I cried.

Trump Supporters Tried to #BoycottHawaii and Twitter Had a Great Time Trolling Them

Earlier this week, a federal judge in Hawaii blocked President Trump’s second travel ban hours before it was supposed to take effect. The judge wasn't buying the administration's insistence that the ban isn't related to religion, especially given Trump's past statements on the measure. But regardless of the reasoning, Trump supporters were quick to fight back by taking to social media to demand that all Americans #BoycottHawaii. It didn't take long before the Twitter trolls creeped out and gave us a few good laughs about the idea that anyone would want to boycott a gorgeous, beachy island.

Here are a few of our favorites.

The Kardashians Make HOW MUCH from Sponsored Instagram Posts?

The Kardashians may be the royal family of reality television, but a large percentage of their income is actually earned from Instagram posts. And you can bet they're taking full advantage.

The Kardashian-Jenner squad are considered influencers on Instagram, and brands will shell out six figures for a single sponsored post. According to Us Weekly, Michael Heller, the CEO of the digital-marketing firm Talent Resources, estimates that some brands pay Kim $500,000 per post, whereas Kourtney and Khloé get around $250,000. Kim reaps the benefits of having 94.8 million followers; Khloé and Kourtney have 64.1 million and 54.3 million followers, respectively.

Kendall and Kylie Jenner are in on this money train, too. With Kendall's 76.4 million followers and Kylie's 89.1 million followers, Cosmopolitan suggests the sisters could each earn roughly $400,000 per sponsored post.

The products that the KarJenners have endorsed include hair vitamins and waist trainers, which Heller says "sell out immediately." He adds that "25 percent of their income" comes from sponsored posts alone.

A New York EMT Was Fatally Run Over By Her Own Ambulance When Someone Hijacked It

Yadira Arroyo, a 44-year-old mother of five and an emergency medical technician in New York, was run over by her own ambulance after it was stolen on Thursday night. She was a 14-year fire department veteran, CBS reports.

While responding to a call in the Bronx, Arroyo and another EMT in the ambulance with her realized someone was riding on the bumper of their vehicle, CBS reports. When they stopped to check out the situation, the man riding on the bumper ran around to the front and got into the driver's seat.

With the other EMT still in the passenger seat of the vehicle, the man reversed the ambulance, hitting Arroyo. This caused her to fall and get stuck underneath the wheels, CBS reports.

A bystander, 20-year-old Justin Lopez, was able to capture the incident on his camera, posting footage to Twitter that showed the ambulance dragging Arroyo. The ambulance continued on to crash into parked cars and ended up stuck in a snow bank. At this point, a Metropolitan Transportation Authority K-9 officer, with help from a bystander, was able to subdue the suspect.

Mayor Bill de Blasio extended a thank you to the "good Samaritans who helped apprehend the perpetrator." He added, "A lot of heroism was on display amidst a great tragedy.”

The 30-year-old EMT who was in the vehicle with the man has been treated for minor injuries in a Brox hospital. Nigro says the two EMTs were "acting very bravely" in dealing with the situation.

Mayor de Blasio said, "We know our EMTs are brave. They do crucial work — they save lives — but they should not ever have to be subjected to violence. And yet, that danger always exists for them."

The man who hijacked the ambulance has been arrested and identified as 25-year-old Jose Gonzales, CNN reports. Police have charged him with three counts of murder, grand larceny and operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs. CBS New York reports that in the past, he has already been arrested ten times for misdemeanors. He will be facing a judge on Friday.

Research Says Over-The-Counter Birth Control is Totally Safe for Teens

Recent research has found that there's absolutely no reason to restrict birth control to prescription only. Teen Vogue reports that although it may cause birth control costs to rise, over-the-counter birth control may be the direction contraception is headed in. According to NPR, even leading obstetricians and gynecologist approve of the idea!

The main reason why over-the-counter contraception has not yet become a widespread concept is because of safety concerns. However, Teen Vogue reports that new research is saying that birth control pills are in fact very safe and effective, and that teens are at the lowest risk for experiencing side effects.

Research published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that the pill seem to be safer for the younger people who take them. One of the most common side effects, an increased chance of getting blood clots, is unlikely to occur in younger users but chances increase as women get older.

Krishna Upadhya, assistant professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the head author of the study, told NPR, "There is a growing body of evidence that the safety risks are low and benefits are large."

With more and more research demonstrating the benefits of having easy access to birth control, along with proof that birth control is most likely not going to harm users, it seems like over-the-counter birth control should be an easy conclusion to come to. NPR reports that some states have changed their laws to make birth control more accessible in pharmacies, but only the Food and Drug Administration can change their status from prescription-only to over-the-counter.

Honestly, what more proof do they need to make birth control more accessible?

This Former 'Bachelor' Contestant Is Documenting Her Double Mastectomy on Instagram & Inspiring TF Out of Us

On March 8 former Bachelor contestant Lesley Murphy announced via Instagram that she is getting a double mastectomy. Since finding out that she tested positive for the breast cancer gene BRCA2, she has decided to remove both of her breasts at 29 years old. Lesley's mom had breast cancer three years ago, which factored into her choice. She wants to be positive and live her best life possible, cancer-free.

Lesley—who competed on Sean Lowe's season of The Bachelor and was a bridesmaid in his wedding to winner Catherine Giudici—captioned her post, "In no way am I looking for pity through this story. I've wanted to share the news since the beginning simply to be an advocate for early screenings, detections and girl power."

I've been thinking on what message to put out there about power, courage, and love and then it hit me... #InternationalWomensDay is the perfect time to share what I've been up to the past few weeks. It has nothing to do with exciting new destinations or more stamps in my passport. A couple of weeks ago I found out I'm BRCA2 positive, which means I'm at a high risk for breast and ovarian cancer one day. Buzzzz kill. I know. But it's true what they say - knowledge is power. I'm left with a few options and have decided that preventative surgery is what I want over various screenings multiple times a year. A double mastectomy at 2freaking9. Wtf?! Yep, it's happening. In no way am I looking for pity through this story. I've wanted to share the news since the beginning simply to be an advocate for early screenings, detections and girl power. Bear with the choppy edits/audio. Day 2 video is coming (reconstruction/plastics, exciting stuff!) but in the interim, I'll be celebrating boobs, knowledge, taking action, and my breast cancer surviving mother today. PS if you see dirt on my forehead, I shot this on Ash Wednesday

Lesley posted a follow-up video the next day, where she talked about what happened at her doctor's appointment. You can see Lesley twirling around in a gown, and her smile is absolutely contagious! She explains how her day was filled with plastic sugery discussions, an ultrasound, mammogram and MRI.

"It feels SO good to have a support system like y'all, and I love how a platform like Instagram brings people together who've gone through similar circumstances," she wrote.
"You say I'm inspiring, but the stories told in my comment section inspired me just the same and reconfirmed my decision to move forward with everything. A surgery date of April 11th is in the books! Until then, I have a month packed full of adventures overseas!"

Day 2 was filled with plastic surgery discussions plus a mammogram, ultrasound and MRI in order to rule out any existing cancer or other problems before surgery (I'm cancer free!). I haven't spent much time in hospitals, so a long day like this gave me so much appreciation for those who must endure many minutes, hours and days inside their walls. As you can tell, I made it as much "fun" as I possibly could. Also, I can't tell you how much I appreciate everyone's messages on my video from yesterday. It feels SO good to have a support system like y'all, and I love how a platform like @instagram brings people together who've gone through similar circumstances. You say I'm inspiring, but the stories told in my comment section inspired me just the same and reconfirmed my decision to move forward with everything. A surgery date of April 11th is in the books! Until then, I have a month packed full of adventures overseas!

Irish People Are Pretty Unhappy With Donald Trump's St. Patrick's Day Mishaps

$

Ireland’s Prime Minister, Enda Kenny, was in Washington D.C. for a few events to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. His visit included breakfast with Vice President Mike Pence, lunch at the Capitol and a special meeting with President Donald Trump, where the Irish Prime Minister would present a bowl of shamrocks to the president, according to The Washington Post.

But in the midst of all of these events, there were a few mishaps that left the Irish unhappy.

It all began when Pence hosted the Irish Prime Minister at his home for breakfast, where in front of a room full of Irish guests, Pence said, “Top of the morning,” the Post reports.

The problem? "Top of the morning" really isn't a thing—it's more of a “cringe-worthy, mildly offensive Irish cliche," according to the Post.

The mishaps continued even through Thursday’s Friends of Ireland luncheon at the Capitol. At the luncheon, Trump said this: “As we stand together with our Irish friends, I’m reminded of that proverb — and this is a good one, this is one I like, I’ve heard it for many, many years and I love it. ‘Always remember to forget the friends that proved untrue, but never forget to remember those that have stuck by you,’” Trump said.

Many took to social media again to point out that this was not an Irish proverb. In fact, some even found that this supposed proverb was actually from a poem by a Nigerian poet.

While Trump never actually said the proverb was Irish, a White House spokeswoman told The Hill that the proverb was included in an email by the State Department containing some information that could be used during the event. It's unclear why they would have included the proverb specifically for this event.

The most despicable moment of all, however, was when House Speaker Paul Ryan pulled out a pint of Guinness. According to the Post, any Guinness enthusiast knows that the Irish beer should be topped with a thick, white foam, and this simply was not the case here.

But to make matters worse, Trump tweeted out a St. Patrick’s day greeting to the Irish in Irish Gaelic, and unfortunately, misspelled one of the words, The Huffington Post reports.

It’s probably safe to say that luck was not on their side. (Bad joke, I know.)

The EU Court Has Allowed Employers to Discriminate Against Muslim Employees

This week, the European Court of Justice ruled that employers are allowed to ban employees from wearing hijabs. The ruling is the end result of a 10-year legal dispute that started when receptionist Samira Achbita was fired from her job at a company called G4S just because she wore her hijab.

NPR reports, “When she was hired in 2003, Achbita did not wear a hijab to work. But when she told her bosses three years later that she wanted to begin wearing one, they refused to allow it, citing an unwritten rule meant to present neutrality to the firm's clients.”

Two months after the onset of this strife, G4S created a new company policy which says, “Employees are prohibited, in the workplace, from wearing any visible signs of their political, philosophical or religious beliefs and/or from engaging in any observance of such beliefs.”Although the official policy was approved on May 29, 2006, Achbita was terminated one day before the rule officially went into effect.

The EU Court of Justice claims that the company’s policy, “…does not introduce a difference of treatment that is directly based on religion or belief." The EU went on to elaborate that the rule “refers to the wearing of visible signs of political, philosophical or religious beliefs and therefore covers any manifestation of such beliefs without distinction."

However, the incident that sparked this controversial ruling is suspiciously prejudiced; seeing as G4S curated the policy that bans the display of any signs or political or religious beliefs shortly after Achbita decided to wear her hijab.

Though the court ruling claims not to discriminate against any visible religious representation in the workplace, the ruling does discriminate against the Muslim community. As reported by ABC News, Amnesty International said, “Today's disappointing rulings…give greater leeway to employers to discriminate against women—and men—on the grounds of religious belief."

The ruling allows organizations to prohibit employees from wearing any signs of religious affiliations, which makes it much easier for hiring managers to discriminate against prospective employees who choose to wear any religious garments to an interview. Because religious headscarves are often seen in the form of burkas, niqabs and hijabs, the ruling implicitly targets Muslim citizens within the EU, which makes up 28 different European countries.

However, not everyone disproves of the court ruling. France’s presidential candidate, François Fillon, told The Guardian that the ruling is “an immense relief, not just for thousands of companies but also for their workers.” As of 2015, over 18.8 million Muslim citizens reside within the European Union. Because companies now have the power to fire employees based on their decision to wear religious headscarves, a considerable percentage of Muslim citizens could struggle with poverty.

In France, the Muslim community already struggles with socio-economic issues, as Muslim citizens make up approximately 60 to 70 percent of the country’s prison inmates, despite the fact that Muslim citizens only make up around less than eight percent of the country’s population. Accordingly, fewer job opportunities will strain the France’s Muslim community even further.

Lola Kirke Called Out Taylor Swift for Not Speaking Out About Trump

Taylor Swift is no stranger to criticism when it comes to her political stance (or rather, lack thereof) following the divisive and controversial 2016 election. All in all, the closest T-Swift has come to getting political was her tweet in support of the Women's March on Washington, and she was one of the few celebrities who didn't speak out against now-President Trump - and actress Lola Kirke is among those who aren't here for it.

According to Refinery29, in a recent interview with Vogue the Mozart in the Jungle actress (and sister to Girls star Jemima Kirke!) talked about using her own platform to speak up about politics and injustice - and criticized other celebrities (yes, naming Swift) for staying silent.

A post shared by Lola Kirke (@lolakirke) on

"For me, it's really important to elevate voices and causes that don't get as much attention with whatever attention I get," she told the magazine. "I definitely think that there are certain celebrities who really could offer more help to grassroots movements with their power - and don't. Yeah, like Taylor fucking Swift, who may as well have voted for Trump, as far as I'm concerned, by not doing anything."

Kirke wasn't solely targeting Swift with her comments, but she clearly wasn't afraid to name names either. While Taylor by all means has no obligation to get political, the argument that her silence is complience with a presidency that threatens the rights of women and other minority groups (all while T-Swift claims to be a feminist) is a fair one.

Twitter Has Some Feelings About This Super Awkward Moment Between President Trump & Angela Merkel

President Trump had his first face-to-face meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday - and considering the fact that he's previously accused her of "ruining Germany," and has repeatedly bashed Germany's immigration laws, we didn't necessarily have high hopes. Spoiler: it was every bit as awkward as we'd expected.

While in the Oval Office posing for photographs and questions from the press, reporters and photographers asked the two world leaders to shake hands. As far as we can tell from video footage, Merkel quietly repeats the question to Trump - who appears to either a. not hear her or b. completely ignore her. Awk.

In fairness, according to CNN, Merkel and Trump did shake hands when the Chancellor arrived at the White House and following a news conference. However, as the Internet quickly noticed, he had no problem taking photos shaking hands with other world leaders such as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

When asked about his meeting with the Chancellor, Trump vaguely said that it was "very good," and that they discussed, "many things." (Typical.) As for Angela Merkel, we're guessing she (along with the rest of us) is missing former POTUS Barack Obama more than ever right now.

This 5-Year-Old Girl Wrote a Letter to Gap Asking for Superhero and Race Car Shirts for Girls

5-year-old Alice Jacob is done with your gender role nonsense (also, same) - and as proof she's serious about it, she decided to write a letter to Gap asking for more ungendered clothing options.

Alice's mother, Beth Jacob, recently penned an essay for the Washington Post, saying that Alice has always loved dinosaurs, superheroes, and other traditional "boy" interests, which has made shopping for clothes a pain.

"Alice is a petite 5-year-old. She swims in clothing cut for boys - even the toddler sizes," Jacobs writes, later adding, "As anyone who’s been in a major retailer recently can tell you, it’s slim pickings out there for girls who love Batman and Diplodocus."

As such, in her letter to Gap, which she and her mother sent on March 6 according to Jacob's essay, Alice asks Gap the hard-hitting question, "The boys shirts are really cool. They have Superman, Batman, Rock and Roll and sports. What about girls who like those things like me and my friend Olivia?"

She ends her letter writing, "Can you make some cool girls’ shirts please? Or, can you make a no boys’ or girls’ section - only a kids’ section?" Naturally, she also drew what looks like a female superhero at the bottom of the page, just in case Gap is (somehow) not convinced by her letter.

While Gap told the Huffington Post that they had yet to receive Alice's letter, hopefully they'll take her suggestions into consideration - we're sure there are thousands of other 5-year-old girls out there who would take full advantage of having access to dinosaur and Batman T-shirts.
