10 Ways to Save Time & Simplify Your Life

This article has been syndicated to Her Campus from The Classic Brunette, an InfluenceHer Collective member. Read the full post here.

School has finally started for me! It's weird thinking that today is my last first day of school EVER. I only have a few more months to go and then I'm a real adult (kinda). Since I'm still getting back in the swing of things, I really need to get myself into a schedule that will help me be more productive and use my time efficiently. I thought all you students out there are probably in the same boat, so here are my ways to save some time and simplify your schedule!

1. Plan Outfits Ahead Of Time

I know it's sometimes fun to play dress up in the morning before work or class, but sometimes it just eats away at all your free time. This happened to me a lot last semester, and there were a lot of days where I ended up running out the door without eating breakfast or feeling way too crushed for time. Planning out your outfit the night before can take the struggle out of your morning and let you enjoy that morning coffee or your extra minutes of 'me time.' Normally when I do this I plan only one outfit, but I have friends who sometimes plan their whole week's worth of outfits! This also works well for packing your school or work bag the night before so you don't forget something important.

2. Learn To Make One Good Meal

Are you constantly asking yourself "What should I eat?" or saying "Ugh I don't know what to make for dinner." Yeah, me too. I've learned that if you have one meal that you know how to make really well that's simple (I'm definitely not talking about a five course dinner here) it can turn into the perfect go to meal. It doesn't matter if it's a delicious gourmet grilled cheese or a crockpot dump meal that cooks itself, as long as it's delicious and easy. The only issue with this one is that you may get tired of your tried and true meal, but that's when you search Pinterest for your next recipe to master...

Trump’s Campaign Had Constant Contact With Russia During The Election

0
0

It turns out that Russia may have had more to do with the 2016 presidential election than just hacking the DNC. According to multiple news outlets, Donald Trump’s campaign aides had nearly constant and repeated contact with Russian intelligence officials.

The New York Times cited four current and former American intelligence officials in their investigation, who spoke with the paper on the condition of anonymity. According to these officials, “phone records and intercepted calls” showed that both top campaign officials and other Trump associates had frequent and repeated contact with members of Russia’s government and intelligence community in the year leading up to the election.

The officials who spoke with the Times intercepted calls between Paul Manafort, Trump’s campaign manager for several months, and Russian intelligence operatives. However, Manafort, who has business ties in Russia and the Ukraine, heatedly denied the claims. “This is absurd,” he said in an interview with the Times. “I have no idea what this is referring to. I have never knowingly spoken to Russian intelligence officers, and I have never been involved with anything to do with the Russian government or the Putin administration.”

No other Trump official was specifically pointed out by the anonymous U.S. officials.

While it is important to note that communications between campaigns and foreign governments is not uncommon, and no conclusive evidence of Trump aides and Russians collaborating to influence the election results has turned up, recent news of other Russia-Trump relations make this revelation especially disturbing.

Due to possibly illegal communications with Russian Ambassador Sergey I. Kislyak last year concerning sanctions on Russia, White House national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned Monday evening. According to the New York Times, the Justice Department warned the White House that Flynn “could be vulnerable to blackmail by Moscow.”

In another unsettling tie to Russia, President Trump praised President Vladimir Putin on the national stage more than a few times. He even received a Christmas letter from the Kremlin leader in December, to which he replied, “A very nice letter from Vladimir Putin; his thoughts are so correct.”

In July, then-presidential candidate Trump called on Russian hackers in July to hack Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s email. According to an FBI investigation, it’s likely that the Wikileaks hack of the Democratic National Committee, which may have influenced the election in Trump’s favor, was carried out by Russian hackers as well. And let’s not forget the dossier on Trump and Russia, which contains unsubstantiated claims that the Kremlin state had groomed Trump for the American presidency and fed him intelligence concerning his political rivals during his campaign. The dossier also claimed that the Russian government had potentially embarrassing, lewd videos of Trump to use as potential blackmail against him.

The story is still developing due to how highly classified the investigation is. FBI and U.S. intelligence agencies are still determining what Trump’s motives were for the unprecedented amount of contact between his campaign and Kremlin officials. If the motives were, however, to sway the election and undermine Hillary Clinton’s campaign, one official noted to CNN, “then that would escalate things.”

The hashtag #TrumpImpeachmentParty trended on Twitter Wednesday morning following the revelation that the election may have been infiltrated by the Russian government.

In typical Trumpian fashion, the president blamed “FAKE NEWS” for the Times report. According to Trump’s tweets, information given by multiple U.S. intelligence officials is actually a pro-Hillary “conspiracy theory” carried out by ~liberal~ biased media.

The Women's March Has Set March 8 As the Date For the 'Day Without a Woman" Strike

In an effort to continue the resisting and organizing that has taken place on behalf of women’s rights since the election and inauguration, the Women’s March has set a date for its general strike—Wednesday, March 8. That’s International Women’s Day!

The strike has been dubbed “A Day Without A Woman,” and aims to demonstrate the significant contributions women make in the workforce and elsewhere by literally having women refuse to show up at those places. Very few details on the strike and how individuals should organize have been released so far, but an Instagram announcement suggests that details are to come.

The post also mentions an upcoming event this Friday, Strike4Democracy’s National Day of Action to Push Back Against Assaults on Democratic Principles. On Feb. 17, “Strike4Democracy will coordinate over 100 strike actions across the United States, and beyond, to plan for a series of mass strikes to stand up for America’s democratic principles,” the first of which is A Day Without A Woman.

Action items for Feb. 17 include not going to work, not buying anything and using your time to instead get in touch with representatives.

Additionally, tomorrow, Feb. 16, a strike has been planned called “A Day Without Immigrants,”  which "calls for immigrants not to attend work, open their businesses, spend money or even send their children to school.” It is in response to the various attacks on immigrants that Donald Trump and his administration have enacted in recent months.

While A Day Without A Woman will certainly be monumental, I’m interested to see how the Women’s March makes considerations for those who can't afford to strike. This strike will likely be exclusive of individuals who are living precarious lives, and these are disproportionately women of color, trans folks and people with disabilities. The Women’s March made a lot of people who aren't white, cis women feel feel excluded, and hopefully they’ll learn from those missteps.

Emma Watson Gave Out Advice for $2 in Grand Central Station Yesterday, & We're All Confused

Yep, you read that correctly! Emma Watson, the actress we all love, is apparently full of life advice and wisdom—no surprise there. For only $2 a pop, she offered advice via iPad in NYC's Grand Central Station yesterday, much to the confusion and intrigue of those passing by.

Just Emma Watson giving life advice in grand central station

A post shared by Sam Slover (@sslover) on

Writer Derek Blasberg stood in the station with a strap around his neck that held up a table and stand with an iPad, camera and sign reading "Advice From Emma Watson $2." (Very Lucy van Pelt-esque.)

The reason Emma was giving out advice and why it was being filmed, along with where the money will go, is unknown. Refinery29 speculates that the stunt is connected to Watson's upcoming movie The Circle, which deals with the "dark side" of the digital age.

One thing we do know for sure is that we wish we had been strolling through Grand Central Station yesterday. Although it was only $2, life advice from Emma Watson is priceless.

Olivia Caridi Just Shut Nick Viall Down for What He Said to Vanessa on 'The Bachelor'

Everyone loves a playful Twitter feud, and the one that just went down between current Bachelor Nick Viall and Season 20's Olivia Caridi did not disappoint. Caps lock, emojis and GIFs went flying after Nick did something on Monday's episode of The Bachelor that just didn't sit well with Olivia. Because isn't this show all about love?! *grabs popcorn*

During the episode, contestant Vanessa Grimaldi confessed her love to Nick, which was met with a less-than-pleasant reaction. Nick told Vanessa, "I really, really like you, but it is incredibly important for me, if I’m lucky enough to feel love or say ‘I love you’ in this role, that I only say it to one person.” *cringes* As you can guess, Olivia was not impressed. Last season's villain was quick to call out Nick and his seemingly repeat behavior.

Talking to Us Weekly, Olivia elaborated. “I’m having a hard time getting behind it. Because if you’re here for love—and I tweeted this, and he didn’t love it, sorry—but if you’re here for love, you’re hearing ‘I love you,’ and your face is like this [makes a pained face], why are you here?" Preach!

As Olivia mentioned, Nick didn't appreciate the criticism.

Luckily, Olivia shut him down in the most hilarious way because nothing can sum it all up better than a GIF.

We totally get where Olivia's coming from. Hopefully Nick understands as well and will make some attitude adjustments where necessary!

It's pretty much understood that spring break is a college student's favorite time of year. We get a week-long break just when the semester starts weighing on us and the snow is getting to be too much. Whether you're traveling somewhere warmer or staying exactly where you are, protecting your eyes is a must... and protecting them in style is too.

We've put together a list of the most on-trend, fun, and fashionable sunglasses that will give your eyes relief from the sun and give you a reason to go out and show them off. From the most subtle designs to the boldest prints, we've got you covered!

Spring break like a fashion queen with all of our favorite sunglasses from this season:

1. Wildfox Lip Service Sunglasses, $189

These lip-shaped sunglasses are fun, flirty, and totally unique.

2. Forever 21 Star Cutout Round Sunglasses, $7.90

This subtle space-themed design is perfect for someone who wants a fun pair of sunglasses without being extra.

3. EyeBuy Direct Monroe Sunglasses, $25

These adorable floral-print vintage-style sunglasses will make you feel like it's summer all year long (even while the snow is piling up outside).

4. WYETH Sutton Matte Stone Sunglasses, $140

I'm definitely not complaining at the chance to snag a pair of these trendy, one-of-a-kind shades.

5. TOPSHOP Cactus Preppy Cateye Sunglasses, $15

Turn up the heat with these incredible—and kind of trippy—technicolor sunnies.

6. ASOS Dolce & Gabbana Classic Cat Eye Sunglasses, $285.63

While these sunglasses are likely to burn a hole in your wallet, this is an awesome opportunity to get your hands on more affordable D&G sunglasses, which usually start at $500. Not gonna lie, I'm also kind of obsessed with the unique floral design.

7. Wildfox Lolita Sunglasses, $189

Wildfox is killing me with all its adorable designs this season... my poor wallet.

8. Nordstrom Le Specs Thunderdome' 52mm Polarized Sunglasses, $79

How awesome are these futuristic sunnies? They also come in black, but I'm a total sucker for bold and bright glasses.

Happy springbreaking, everyone!

6 Hacks to Actually Enjoy Your Gen Ed English Class

0
0

You probably thought majoring in STEM or business would keep you safe from taking a humanities class, and finding out that you needed an English course was an unwelcome surprise. Whether it's a literature class or English composition, it’s time to buckle up your literary seat belt and accept that this ride has to happen.

It’s not all bad! English will sharpen your critical thinking, abstract thinking, emotional intelligence, creativity and communication, which even if you're a STEM powerhouse will help you in the future. Getting out of your comfort zone is scary, but there are ways to make it easier for yourself. Here are six pieces of advice that will help make your English class exceed your expectations.

1. Choose the course you want

Depending on how you register for classes at your college, odds are you’ll have more than one option when you choose your general English requirement. Whether there are multiple professors teaching the same English 101, or you get to choose between American literary history and modern drama for your literature course, there are key factors you’ll want to consider.

Dr. Amy Wiley, an English lecturer at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, highlights a few of these considerations. “First ask yourself which course pairs best with your academic and career goals,” she says. “If you’re going to be doing a lot of research and proposal writing, you’ll want to take a composition class geared towards argumentation. Look at the time of the class; try to take it in a gap where your brain will be functioning. Buy in to professor ratings since it is a low-stakes class and choose who will provide a fun learning experience. Most importantly go with a subject matter that calls to you, interests you and doesn’t make you scared of English. The point is to learn something, not suffer.”

Essentially, go with your gut feeling on this. If you’re still lost, your college’s academic advising center can answer more questions and help find you the best fit.

2. Psych yourself up for it

Semester goal: make English class as lit as possible. But really, if you come to class stoked on life and ready to take on the world, you’ll have a better experience. Maybe for you that means treating yourself and bringing a venti latte to lecture, or buying a new journal and highlighters to make notetaking vibrant instead of dull. Small joys keep your interests and motivation up.

Additionally, if you’re feeling comfortable in class, you might be more likely to participate. “I think speaking up in class, engaging in discussions and trying to relate the text to your own life helps,” says Iris Goldsztajn, a University of California Los Angeles alumna. She’s totally right!

Meaningfully contributing in class is one of the surest ways to make the experience more rewarding, and keep you excited to come back for more.

3. Grab an audiobook

If reading is your personal hell, trade in your paperback for an audio recording. From poems to full novels, there are audiobooks and YouTube videos for pretty much everything in the English canon. They’re low maintenance, and even better you can listen to your homework while you're at the gym, driving or making dinner. I'm an English major and there are some texts even I prefer to listen to rather than read. Let's be honest, nobody really wants to read Moby Dick or The Canterbury Tales. Bless audiobooks for taking our pain away.

4. Let yourself be a critic

If you don't like a text or totally disagree with an author, then be vocal about it! The point of your English class isn't to like everything you read, it's to respond to what an author is trying to say, form an opinion and add to the scholarly conversation. If you like it, great! But if you want to set your copy of The Great Gatsby on fire, that’s okay too because it means you’re engaging.

“When I teach, I find that students force themselves to like the material because they think that’s how they pass or how they make the class worthwhile,” says Dr. Wiley, about being critical in class. “That’s so wrong! I love when my students feel peppery about a text. It means they’ve done the reading, and are thinking critically about it in some way. Literature is unique because it doesn’t have a right or wrong answer. The only answer is how you react to it.” If that wasn’t enough English inspiration for you, I don’t know what is.

5. Try to learn something new every day

You don’t need to be the star pupil, or anxiously exhaust yourself trying to get an A. If you’re taking away one surprising bit of knowledge each day, you’re winning––and probably making your class feel more worthwhile too.

“I’m a marketing major and English was the bane of my existence,” says Caitie Donovan, a senior at Biola University. “To cope I tried to make a little game with myself of how many new facts/realizations I could learn that day, even if I didn’t think they helped me with marketing. By the end up the class I realized I had fun. I tricked myself into being interested, and ended up actually interested and proud of myself for every new thing I learned.”

We totally recommend following Caitie’s model. If nothing else, try to succeed for your own personal gratification, not the grade.

6. Do the reading

You’re probably exhausted from hearing this advice, but people keep saying it for a reason. Doing the reading is the number one tip for kicking butt in English class, both because you’ll understand the material better and your professor will literally love you. Even in a class that’s writing based, you’ll likely be reading journal examples and some creative work.

Dr. Wiley can’t emphasize the importance of doing your homework enough. “Get out of the mindset where reading is a daunting obligation, and look at it as the chance to learn on a deeper level,” she says. “Literature contains the record of humanity. In English and American literature, you learn history, culture, emotional insights and get to look at social behavior. Reading a book is art, just like going to a museum, or watching a play or movie. You’ll take away a lot more from a book than from your professor, I promise.”

If you’re not putting in the work to make English enjoyable for yourself, it won’t happen. Enjoying the course all depends on your attitude, and if you follow these simple tips you’re sure to succeed. Good luck, collegiettes!

Stop Everything- Starbucks is Now Serving Ice Cream Floats

Guy's, this is not a drill. Starbucks, our favorite place for a mid-afternoon frappuccino craving, also known as HEAVEN, will now be serving ice-cream floats. Well, kinda.

According to Cosmopolitan, Starbucks will now be selling something called an affogato, an Italian treat which involves a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a shot of espresso on top, in more than 100 stores across Orange County.

And although they look pretty fancy, their price is not ~that~ horrible, with prices ranging from $6 to the $8.50, Business Insider reports.

Selena Gomez Reportedly Spent $30,000 on The Weeknd for His Birthday

When it's my boyfriend's birthday, I typically go with a nice card, maybe some new soccer socks, and some other nick-nacks, if he is lucky. But, apparently, if I were Selena Gomez, I would drop $30,000 for my SO's big day. Yup, you read that right.

A post shared by Selena Gomez (@selenagomez) on

According to Seventeen, on Monday evening, Gomez dropped $30,000 while picking up the tab at The Weeknd's birthday dinner at Dave and Busters. The party, which she could not attend due to New York Fashion Week, included the likes of French Montana, 2 Chainz, Big Sean and Travis Scott, according to TMZ

Although the pair has not totally declared their love for each other in public, this is a huge act of ~L0vEeee~, if I may.

23 Things Only Competitive Girls Understand

All I do is win, win, win, no matter what—sound familiar? If you’ve said (or maybe chanted) the words of DJ Khaled one too many times, you’re probably WELL aware that you are a competitive person. After all, a little friendly (or not so friendly…) competition never hurt anybody. Here’s to all the people who are in it to win it and can’t stop, won’t stop cause well, you're winning at life.

1. Pretty much everything is a competition to you

Even if your competition isn't aware of it.

2. At game nights, you reign

And may cause some temporarily broken friendships.

3. "All I Do Is Win" is your freaking anthem

DJ Khaled (and our homegirl Emma Stone) knows what’s up.

4. If you’re not good at something, you won’t bother participating

Tbh what’s the point if you’re not going to win? Why would anyone set themselves up for failure?

5. You expect nothing short of perfection

6. Paris Geller is your spirit animal

Shout-out to our Gilmore Girls homegirl.

7. You LOVE Jane from Happy Endings

Relatability level is off the freaking charts.

8. And you're the Monica of your friend group

9. You're dating or hoping to date someone who's (almost) as competitive as you

Cause it just ain't possible for anyone to be on your level, you know what I'm saying?

10. You LOVE watching and playing competitive sports

And when—not if—you or your team wins, there is no end to the gloating—hey, don't hate the player, hate the game.

11. You seriously hate group projects

I don’t need anybody dragging me down.

12. You’re top of the class

And pretty much top of everything.

13. You’re definitely a Type A kind of girl

Competitive, outgoing, ambitious, fast-paced—yep, sounds about right.

14. You’ve done something just because someone told you you couldn’t do it

The feeling of proving people wrong never ever gets old.

15. You literally cannot handle being put on the same team as non-competitive people

Just why?

16. You don't know how to deal with losing

It's not something you can just like get over.

17. Second or last place, it's all the same to you

18. You don’t understand people who don’t always bring their A game

Isn’t it a given that you should put 110 percent into everything?

19. Your dream is to compete on a game show

20. You’re always confident in your abilities

Beyoncé said it best.

21. You pretty much consider yourself your biggest competition

Cause you'll keep working to get yourself on a whole 'nother level.

22. Some people don’t understand your intensity and competitive nature

23. But you don’t care because you’re too busy #winning

And that never stops feeling awesome.

Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Say 'I Love You' First

0
0

Rattlesnakes make us shake in our combat boots. Skydiving shocks us, bombed midterms haunt us and getting a job after graduation just straight-up scares us. These things are, without a doubt, terrifying. However, many collegiettes would face all four of them in a heartbeat if it meant skipping out on being the first to take the great leap of L-O-V-E faith.

Saying “I love you” for the first time may seem particularly petrifying…but it doesn’t have to be! So go ahead—shout it from the rooftop, sing it to the world or, at the very least, whisper it to your SO. Read on to remind yourself that there’s nothing wrong with telling him or her how you really feel.

1. There are no set rules

Your syllabus tells you that you must submit your 10-page paper by midnight on Monday. Your internship supervisor requires you to show up by 7 a.m. on Fridays. But who or what decides when it’s the right time to drop the L-word? Well, that’s all you.

College of Charleston senior Marissa Myhill dealt with this inner dilemma while trying to determine whether or not to speak up. “I did not say I love you first, but I had told him I was falling in love with him,” she says. “He responded with: ‘Well let me be the first to say, I love you Marissa.’"

Although Marissa was the first to mention the subject, she didn’t think she could commit to it entirely. “I wanted to say it, but I think what held me back was I felt like it was too soon or we hadn't been together long enough to say it,” Marissa says. She also points out that it wasn’t the first time she’s felt restricted by the rules we’re led to believe exist. They’re not real, so don’t let them run (or ruin) your love life!

2. When you know, you know

Remember when Karen from Mean Girls recognized there was a 30-percent chance it was already raining because she could feel it in her boobs? While we assume/hope your romance radar is just a teensy bit more accurate, the same idea applies.

It doesn’t matter when—or where—you feel the love. Whether it’s in your head during a date, your shoulders mid-kiss, your knees after a weekend trip or your toes on a random Tuesday, the sensation has a way of making you hyperaware of its presence. So, unless you want to deal with tingly toes until your SO finally takes it upon himself or herself to say I love you, you’ll be better off if you go with what you know.

3. It’s easier than waiting

Good things do come to those who wait. Whoever said that first wasn’t wrong. But even better things come to those who ditch the waiting game and speak from the heart. In the words of Temple University senior Leah Wenhold, “Being the first to say I love you is better than being the last!”

Instead of sitting on a seriously strong “I love you” because you think the hands of some imaginary clock are pointing to the wrong time, stand up and stop being so overly patient that it’s silencing your ability to share your feelings!

Related: 6 Pros & Cons of Being Someone’s First Love

4. Your SO probably feels the same way…and is probably nervous, too

The fear of rejection is real—so real, in fact, that we’ve all been there. “It may seem daunting if it's the first time you've ever said I love you,” says Stephanie Huynh, a freshman at Lehigh University. Stephanie may be spot-on about the intimidation surrounding our three favorite words, but what she says next really gets to the heart of the matter. “If you can tell they feel the same way and they're just as nervous, I don't see any problem with ‘exposing’ your love first. Chances are, they feel the same”

Belmont University sophomore Sarah Self experienced this firsthand. “My boyfriend and I had been long distance for about six months, practically the whole time we were dating,” she says. “I was so chicken about saying it because I'd never told anyone I'd loved them in that way before. Finally, I just worked up the nerve and kind of half said it. I hinted in a text, saying ‘well, that's not the only thing I love about you.’ When he asked what else I loved, I said ‘you.’” Sarah was beyondnervous throughout the time it took for her boyfriend to respond. He then told her he felt the same way. As Sarah puts it, sharing her feelings “was so worth it.”

While there is no official right or wrong time to say I love you, there is (or will be) a right time for you. You’ll know exactly when it strikes, and, though you should never feel pressured into talking before you’re ready, we hope you find comfort in your freedom to reveal how you feel whenever the heck you please.

The 5 Most Common Spring Break Disasters (& How to Avoid Them)

As you book your flight and pack your bikini, chances are you can’t stop picturing the stunning beaches and festive cocktails waiting for you at your spring break destination of choice. But did you ever consider you might be one bad decision away from a spring break nightmare? What about getting all of your valuables stolen so a thief can dine on unlimited breadsticks at the Olive Garden? Or attempting to get a sexy tan, but winding up looking like a full-fledged lobster?  Read on for some tips and testimonies about the 5 most common spring break horrors and how to avoid them.

1. Sexual Encounters of a Dangerous Kind

“We were in Ibiza, Spain my freshman year of college. One night, I ended up getting separated from my girlfriends and going back with a guy, but I didn’t realize my phone was dead. My friends didn’t know where I was, and had spent all night looking for me and trying to think of ways to tell my parents that they lost me. It definitely scared all of us, because I had no clue where my girlfriends had gone, and there is nothing scarier than being in a foreign country and not knowing where your girls are.”- Krista, Simmons College

By now, we’ve all heard about Natalee Holloway and the dangers of hooking up with strangers. While it might seem like an extreme example, it’s important to recognize that hooking up with someone you don’t know puts you in an infinitely more vulnerable position than hooking up with a friend from home. But that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in a little spring fling romance. Here are some ways to keep your hookup from crossing into the danger zone.

Power in Numbers

Before you hit the dance floor, develop a game plan with your girlfriends and stick to it. It’s easy to get lost in a crowded club, so agreeing on a time and place to meet at the end of the night is a great way to keep track of each other. The website SpringBreakSafety.org, suggests: “Go out with your friends, go home with your friends. It’s one of those things that keeps you a whole lot safer, and eliminates about 98% of the bad drama.”

Pick a Location

If you do meet a guy you want to hook up with, try to go somewhere you feel safe, preferably in a place that’s near your friends so they know where you’re headed and how to reach you. Always use your hotel room instead of his, since your friends can access it if necessary. Or, if you don’t mind a little PDA, stay at the club and get a little smooch time in there. While it may not be the classiest behavior, at least your girls can keep an eye on you.

Watch Your Drink

Drugs like GBH, Ketamine, and Rohypnol (“roofies”) are popular date rape drugs because they can be discreetly slipped into a drink and take effect quickly, often lasting several hours. At first, when a person is slipped a date drug she’ll just seem really drunk, often making it difficult for friends to realize the person has been drugged before she’s sauntered off with the guy and it’s too late. Stay in control and be aware of your surroundings by making sure you know exactly what’s in your drink and holding onto it the entire night. If a guy offers to buy you a drink, walk over with him to the bar and watch him order it. And if you notice your drink tastes or looks a little funky, pour it out. GBH can make drinks saltier and Rohypnol can change the color of a drink.

Also, remember that the more you drink, the more self-control you lose. While there’s no shame in having a little fun, monitoring how much alcohol you consume and making sure to not exceed your limit will help you evaluate a hookup situation with more clarity and better judgment. And if nothing else, at least you’ll choose a guy without the influence of the beer goggles effect.

Can I Get Your Number?

It's always a good idea to carry around the number and address of the hotel you're staying in. And before you leave for Spring Break, exchange phone numbers with your friends' parents. Their parents will feel better knowing they can contact you, and you'll know how to get in touch with them in case of an emergency. Also, if you think you might be spending the night somewhere else, bring your phone charger with you. It's a small device that could make a huge difference.

2. Getting Robbed

"I went to Las Vegas and on my first night out in a club, my phone got stolen out of my purse. Then the second night, I was at a club, dancing with one of my friends with my purse securely (or so I thought) strapped over my shoulder. All of a sudden, I realized that my purse weighed absolutely nothing. My ID, money, credit cards, passport—it was ALL gone. I had no clue where it all went. Luckily I was able to get the charges cancelled on my credit card...so I can now laugh about what the thief spent my money on: $300 at WALGREENS (what do you even buy there for $300?!), and a meal at the Olive Garden... someone really classy stole my stuff!" - Cassidy, Emerson College

“I was at the airport on my way back to California when my purse got stolen. I lost everything—my IPod, camera, all of my identification and over $100 in cash!” - Nicole, Emerson College

Between flying on an airplane, staying in a hotel and running around town, there are an unfortunate amount of opportunities for thievery on Spring Break. San Diego-based travel agent Bonnie Sherman says vacation destinations are a hot spot for theft because “places that tourists gather are prime targets.”  She also claims that TSA agents are notorious for stealing out of travelers’ luggage. However, there are some things you can do to minimize your risk.

Lock It Up

Sherman says using a neck safe or a money belt, instead of a purse, is the most effective way to keep your valuables safe while flying. If you are planning on packing some valuables, make sure to pack them in a carry-on bag instead of your checked luggage. Once on vacation, many hotels will offer safes in the room, but bringing your own is also an option.

Copy Important Documents

If you’re traveling outside of the United States, Sherman suggests making two copies of your passport: one to leave in the hotel room, and a colored copy for your parents at home. Better yet, scan and store all your key documents in Google Docs so that you have access to them anywhere.

Mix Up Your Money

When figuring out what kind of money to bring, plan on bringing a few different kinds of payment. Sherman suggests carrying both cash and a credit card, and keeping them in separate places. She recommends bringing a debit card rather than a credit card, because “parents can reload it if needed, but if it’s lost, there isn’t a large amount at risk.”  If you’re travelling internationally, make sure to call the credit card company and let them know you’re going away beforehand; otherwise they might think your card was stolen and cancel it when they see the foreign charges! Also, ask your bank what kind of fees they charge for withdrawals overseas and what kind of foreign currency exchange fees they impose. Many banks now offer to refund ATM fees, so shop around for the best deal. And your bank may have a partnership with a bank in the country you’re going to so you can withdraw from there and won’t have to pay the ATM fees at all.

Lighten the Load

When considering what to pack, ask yourself, “do I really need this?” Cutting down the amount of prized possessions you bring might seem like a sacrifice at first, but chances are you really won’t need your grandmother’s pearls in the Bahamas, and you’ll never forgive yourself if they got lost or stolen. And consider leaving your laptop, iPad, and other hefty electronics behind. They draw attention, add weight, and most hotels have a business center if you need to check your email during the trip.

3. Attack of Montezuma’s Revenge (and other stomach bugs)

“When I was in the Dominican Republic last spring break I got some sort of allergic reaction to the sun or water or food—they didn't know—and my eyes and face swelled up like a marshmallow. I looked like an avatar and I could hardly see. Our hotel had no real medical care and there were no real hospitals nearby, so they put me in this rusty 1950s-era ambulance and drove me to this ‘clinic’ that was a terrifying excuse for a medical facility. After waiting for four hours, they let me know they didn't actually have any of the medication I needed and it needed to be transported across the island. When my medication finally arrived they said my insurance didn't cover it and charged me 500 dollars for the meds. When I came back I showed them to my doctor, and guess what I paid 500 bucks for? Zyrtec and Advil!” – Amanda, Cornell University

“We went to the most beautiful little islands in Antigua where we were the only people there because you could only get there by boat. We would anchor in the middle of the ocean at night and have dinner and casual drinks on the deck. So perfect. On Tuesday night, my boyfriend, Alex, started to feel really sick. Early the next morning, we contacted a hospital and took him in the dinghy to land and got him to a hospital. They did some tests and found out it was E. Coli!” –Kara, Emmanuel College

Tropical destinations like the Caribbean are a mecca for stunning beaches, gorgeous people and unfortunately, food-borne illnesses. Getting sick on vacation is never fun, but when you’re in a foreign country it can become a total nightmare. Keep a few of these items with you to avoid a gastronomic catastrophe!

Purify Your H20

Places like Mexico are notorious for having poor water quality. Some resorts claim to have filtered water, but if you’re unsure, it’s always better to buy bottled water or bring along a filtered water bottle. And if you’re ordering a drink, make sure to get it without ice!

Stock Up On Meds

Finding medicine on vacation can be an expensive and challenging feat. Come prepared and pack a first aid kit with some basic medications. If you do get sick, it will save you from the hassle and possibly the hospital.

4. Feelin’ the Burn

“I wasn’t even in Florida for 24 hours before I looked like a full-fledged lobster! And my beet-red appearance wasn’t even the worst of it. The sunburn made my skin so sensitive that I couldn’t be touched without flinching in pain. Oh well, there went my hopes for any spring break hookups!”- Jenny*, Emerson College

“I went to Phuket, Thailand with my friends and got a sunburn because I did not re-apply my sunscreen enough throughout the day. I was having too much fun with my friends at the pool, bar, and the beach. It was very painful and red!” - Crystal, Emerson College

Getting a tan is at the top of every collegiette’s spring break to-do list. But the quest for the perfect tan can often result in the incredibly painful (and much less attractive) sunburn. Manhattan dermatologist Eric Schweiger, M.D. says tan skin likely represents damaged skin and doesn’t recommend tanning. But that doesn’t mean you have to skip out on enjoying the sunshine completely! Here are some ways you can get your Vitamin D fix, without getting sunburned.

Accessorize

Nothing looks more beach-chic than a flirty cover-up paired with Jackie O shades and a wide-brimmed hat. And this look isn’t just glamorous, Dr. Schweiger says, “Sun-safe clothing and hats are excellent ways to prevent UV damage.”

Give Yourself a Break

The sun is most powerful between 10am and 3pm. So after a couple of hours in the heat, head inside for a break. Being wary of how long you’re in the sun will reduce your chances of getting sunburned and you can always come out later for evening cocktails on the beach!

Moisturize, Baby!

If you do get sunburned, Dr Schweiger recommends using the over-the counter topical cream, hydrocortisone 1% to reduce swelling and redness. You can also soothe your skin by taking cold showers and applying a moisturizer that contains aloe vera.

Be Patient

While we all want to become tan the moment our feet hit the sand, our skin simply doesn’t work that way. While it might seem like you’re not getting as tan as you hoped, remember to be patient. If you let your skin burn to a crisp, you’ll most likely peel without ever getting brown, and you’ll have to stay indoors the rest of your vacation. But by reapplying sunscreen (a 30 SPF or higher every two hours), you’re much more likely to get that sun-kissed glow.

5. Intoxication Overload

“My friends and I went to Cabo San Lucas and my one friend got a little too much sun and had a little too much to drink one day/night that the next night she was sick and had to stay in bed. She missed the best night when we went on a booze cruise!” Michelle, Emerson College

“It’s five o’clock somewhere” has become the unofficial motto of Spring Break. But while drinking definitely ranks high on the list of popular activities, having a few too many can ruin your entire vacation. By drinking responsibly, you can immerse yourself in the Spring Break experience, without suffering the next morning. According to NYC-based nutritionist and author, Cynthia Sass, “most women who drink 3-5 drinks will get a hangover.”  But she says that if you do get a hangover, the following foods and practices may lessen the headache, nausea and dehydration that stem from a night of heavy drinking.

Pace Yourself

“Your liver can process about one drink an hour. One drink equals 12 oz of regular beer, 5 oz of wine or a 1.5 oz shot of liquor. Drinking no faster than that rate and drinking plenty of water with and between drinks may help prevent a hangover,” Sass says.

Snack Attack

While we traditionally think of pancakes as classic hangover food, Sass says scrambled eggs are better. “Eggs contain two amino acids that go to work to help you feel better: taurine and cysteine. Taurine has been shown in studies to reverse liver damage caused by a night of heavy drinking and help the body flush out toxins more quickly.” She also recommends bananas or coconut water for a much-needed boost of electrolytes and potassium.

You’ve booked a hotel, bought your plane tickets, and done your safety research. Now it’s time for some well-deserved fun in the sun! By arriving prepared and staying aware, you are well on your way to creating a spring break that’s fun, fabulous, and most importantly, disaster-free!

Chris Lane Shares Behind-the-Scenes Secrets from His 'Bachelor' Concert for Nick & Danielle L.

As a diehard Bachelor fan, I’ve always wondered what goes into the concert scenes—you know, when artists serenade the Bachelor and his date in front of a screaming audience. During Nick’s Wisconsin-set, one-on-one date with Danielle L. earlier this season, country singer Chris Lane found out.

He’s also a Bach superfan, so he was gracious enough to share some behind-the-scenes secrets with me.

“This was a bucket list opportunity for me. The Bachelor team put together this date and felt ‘For Her’ would fit the theme of the night perfectly,” Chris explains. Immediately following the episode’s airing on Jan. 23, “For Her” soared to the top spot on the iTunes Top Country Songs chart, so the track obviously resonated with more than just Nick and Danielle.

As for filming, Chris admits, “It was a hectic day…nerve-racking…but in a good way.”

Although the performance you see may seem like any other concert when you’re watching it from home, a lot goes into getting the swoon-worthy, romance-filled shots we’re used to. “You really have one chance to get that perfect take,” he says. “Everybody on the entire crew nailed their part, and it was a seamless night.”

According to Chris, fans would be surprised to know just how much detail and communication the concert scenes require. “Everything was planned down to the second the doors swung open, and then you kind of let the date take over at that point.”

But nothing compares to how Chris felt watching the episode. “It was one of the coolest moments of my career,” he says. “I have always been a huge fan of the show, so seeing myself on it was very surreal and I’m honored ‘For Her’ was a part of it.”

We're All Obsessed With Lipstick, Science Confirms

2016 was full of trends—some that thankfully didn't last (faux freckles, anyone? I didn't think so)—and some that are here to stay. One of those trends is lipstick: whether it's nude, liquid, or a kit, science shows that we are officially obsessed with the stuff (not that we ever had any doubt). We are especially obsessed with buying it online, because online beauty, which includes all kinds of makeup, fragrance, and nail products, is a $1.2 billion industry. Which basically means that if we could somehow find the way to resist buying makeup all the time (impossible), then we would all be rich. Too bad that's never gonna happen.

New data analytics conducted by 1010data reveal that within this huge industry, lip makeup was the fastest growing beauty category last year, with a 26 percent increase in growth. There's obviously a ton of brands that sell their makeup online, but in 2016, the winner was (drumroll please)... MAC! This is no surprise, since every single one of their lipsticks is amazing (I wear this one almost every single day).

MAC's growth in the online beauty industry is probably partly due to the fact that the retailer has its own website, which not all beauty brands do. Another big factor in the popularity of different brands is their social media presence. Last year, Anastasia snagged the top spot as the fastest growing online brand due to their social media strategy, especially on Instagram.

Perhaps one of the most interesting facts that came out of this new study was the top online makeup retailer. Most people, myself included, would assume that a company such as Sephora or Ulta would be #1. However, the data shows that Amazon Marketplace actually accounts for over 20 percent of all online makeup sales. That's about one in every five online beauty purchases!!

As you can see in the chart, Sephora isn't even close to Amazon's amount of sales. Which has me thinking that next time I plan a huge beauty haul, I may be checking out Amazon first... there's gotta be a reason so many people are buying from them, right?

If there's one thing I learned from this, it's that numbers and data are so much more fun to talk about when it has to do with makeup. And also that lipstick rules forever and always, because #science.

A Political Cartoonist Compared Betsy DeVos to Civil Rights Icon Ruby Bridges

Political cartoons are meant to make jokes about the political climate, and some of those jokes will inspire while others will upset. I'm guessing political cartoonist Glenn McCoy meant to inspire with one of his latest cartoons, but really he just ruffled a whole lot of feathers. He released a cartoon paralleling Norman Rockwell's "The Problem We Live With," except instead of a little black girl who faced racist epithets on her way to school, he depicted Betsy DeVos, the recently confirmed Secretary of Education. That's right. According to Cosmopolitan, the cartoon quickly went viral due to sharp criticism.

DeVos was confirmed as secretary of education in a vote so close that the vice president was forced to break the tie—a first for any Cabinet nomination. Her initial hearing exposed holes in her knowledge about public education, causing two Republican senators to turn against her.

Since taking the position, DeVos has faced a slew of criticism, especially on Twitter, where her new department has made some embarrassing typos. But the stiffest criticism came from protesters blocking her from entering a public school in Washington D.C. last Friday. She did manage to get into the school through a different entrance, and released a statement saying she will not be deterred from helping public schools.

The cartoon shows this incident in comparison to that of Ruby Bridges. If you're unfamiliar, Ruby Bridges was the then 6-year-old child who desegregated New Orleans schools in 1960. Bridges was chosen to integrate the all white school in her area, William Frantz Elementary School. As with any desegregation effort, Bridges and her family were met with substantial opposition—racial slurs, threats, and even parents pulling their white children out of the school. It was so much the National Guard was called in and accompanied her to school everyday. For an entire year, Bridges had to go to class alone with only her teacher to teach her. The original painting shows Bridges walking proudly in white as she walks to school surrounded by the National Guard. Behind her, the N-word and "KKK" are written on the wall, and a tomato is splattered on the ground as well. The painting was released in 1964 as a centerfold to LOOK magazine, and is regarded as an important piece of Civil Rights-era art.

McCoy's political cartoon drew criticism from many, including Chelsea Clinton herself who tweeted out. Much of the criticism was directed at the false equivalency between a black child's struggle during desegregation and a rich white woman facing criticism that she brought on herself. Not to mention this comparison was made during Black History Month, when the courageous acts of black Americans like Ruby Bridges are celebrated.

Many conservatives believe the cartoon is an apt representation of people being barred from schools. But here's the thing—segregation policy was based on racism, and the Bridges were ostracized and threatened with murder in their own community for daring to challenge it. Betsy DeVos is NOT protesting wrongful policies, and those protesting her were not doing so out of racism, nor were they threatening her life in any way. The protests happened for a day, not an entire year. A simple inconvenience is not the same as the centuries-long systematic oppression of black people.

Trump Blames 'Fake Media'& Intelligence Leakers For the Administration's Problems

As if this administration couldn't get any more chaotic, the president is now accusing both the media and intelligence officials of dishonestly working against him, according to Politico. Early Wednesday, Trump took to Twitter (as always) to dismiss several recent allegations that his campaign was in talks with Russia before the election—allegations so damning that Trump's national security adviser had to resign. In his barrage of tweets, Trump attacked The New York Times, as well as cable news networks CNN and MSNBC, calling them "unwatchable" and "fake news." He also said CIA officers who leaked information were unpatriotic.

The barrage of tweets followed reports that former national security adviser Michael Flynn had spoken with Russia before the election about sanctions—an illegal action for a private citizen. Eventually, Flynn was forced to resign after only 24 days in office. Press Secretary Sean Spicer then told the press that Trump had been concerned about Flynn for about weeks, despite Trump himself saying just a few days before he had no idea about the allegations. Then, The New York Times released new reports, alleging other Trump campaign aides were also in close contact with Russian officials.

Trump has gone on the defensive, choosing to say in a press conference that Flynn was treated unfairly by the press. In his eyes, all the accusations are somehow supposed to deflect from the mistakes Hillary Clinton made during her campaign. But though Trump accused the "failing"Times and The Washington Post of using illegally obtained intelligence material in their stories, potentially jeopardizing national security, he reportedly held a national security meeting on an open terrace at Mar-a-Lago this past weekend, leaving plenty of room himself for eavesdroppers and national security leaks. The confusing part is figuring out what Trump really means here—if the media's stories aren't true, why did he have to fire Flynn? Is it that the media is making stuff up, or that people on the inside are leaking true information? With Trump, as usual, it's impossible to tell.

It's almost overwhelming the amount of things the new administration has put us through. And no. It has not been an entire month. It's just close to it. We still have a long, long way to go.

Anyone with thick hair knows that it comes with plenty of pros and also plenty of cons. It takes a lot of time and effort to make your hair look as beautiful (and tamed) as it does. And sometimes, you wish it could be a little thinner. Here are things anyone with thick hair is familiar with.

1. Elastics do NOT last forever

And you hate it.

It's breaking the bank!

Not to mention the time it takes to position them.

4. You own enough hair products to stock a drug store

Don't judge me.

5. Wind is the worst thing that can happen

Bad weather can totally ruin your day.

Whatever it is, it's crazy.

At least you'd have more time in the mornings!

How could you have been so stupid?

13. You shed to the point where it’s concerning

How am I not bald yet?

So much hair to shampoo and condition.

Where did it go?!

18. Drying your hair naturally can take hours or even days

Ain't nobody got time for that.

19. Your hair actually makes your hair sweat in summer

Ew.

20. Humidity is the devil

You should just never go outside.

21. Your hair even stresses your hair dresser out

And that's not a good sign.

22. You use way more conditioner than shampoo

23. You have definitely broken a hairbrush once or twice

Blame the hair.

24. Not even a hat can solve a bad hair day

You just gotta wash it all over again.

You've got all the thickness you need.

26. Blow drying your hair makes your arms hurt

A LOT.

'Sports Illustrated' Actually Showed a Model With Stretch Marks, But It's Not What You Think

0
0

Yes, technically Sports Illustrated has a photo of a plus-sized model with actual stretch marks. But before you get your hopes up, it's not on the cover, nor as part of an editorial.

The ~tiger stripes~ are featured in an ad for Lane Bryant's Cacique swimsuit line, from the brand's "This Body" campaign. The body-positive brand dressed model Denise Bidot in a nautical bikini, and looking confident and flawless. Oh yeah, and she happens to have her stretch marks on display.

I wish models like Bidot could follow in Ashley Graham's footsteps and grace the cover of Sports Illustrated. At least the ad campaign is working towards greater acceptance of different body sizes, especially when so many women have stretch marks and should never be ashamed of the natural way the body registers changes.

And it's only the second time in Bidot's nine-year modeling career that her photos haven't been retouched to remove her stretch marks. This one is all-natural, and as a mom, Bidot is understandably happy to be a part of the generation that will change representation of women's bodies in media. "You feel like Cinderella ... I remember growing up, every (model on the runway) was pretty much a clone of the other,"she said of fashion week. "So to fast-forward as a mother now and to be able to full-on be a part of that change, it’s everything. My daughter is going to get to grow up in a world where she never sees herself being an outcast or feeling like she doesn’t fit in."

Keep slaying the game, Lane Bryant.
