6 Signs Sugar is Ruining You & What To Do About It

0
0

Did you know vending machines are banned in France? Even if you answered “yes,” how about that Hungary is installing a program to increase water consumption in schools? Mexico also has a soda tax and the Netherlands is promoting a fruit and vegetables program in school. But why? Ever since the World Health Organization’s sugar guideline recommended that adults and children should limit their sugar intake to less than 10 percent of their total energy intake—countries have gone to great lengths to cut the cravings.

Let’s break it down—to achieve the WHO’s standard, you must reduce your sugar intake to 12.5 teaspoons of sugar per day. Dr. Holly Willis, a registered dietician nutritionist and program director of nutrition and dietetics at St. Catherine University, says, “The current Dietary Guidelines for American's suggest that people consume less than 10 percent of their calories from sugar.  This means for a person eating 2,000 calories per day, they should aim for less than 200 calories from added sugar.”

One regular can of soda contains 10 teaspoons, and one Hershey’s chocolate bar contains about 5 teaspoons of sugar. If you’re like us—you’re currently mentally tallying your drinks and snacks throughout the day. But before you freak—ask yourself—are these common entries in your daily food log? Or just your ~monthly~ sugar craze?

Can’t decide—or not willing to admit it? Here are six signs that your sugar intake is getting out of hand.

1. You feel totally drained

You’re not a little kid anymore. You can’t take those pixie stix before recess and then crash in your designated naptime spot. You have school, work and probably a few extracurriculars that don’t include curling up on a sofa.

Annie Lawless, a certified holistic health coach and co-founder of Suja Juice, says, “Sugar causes a spike in our blood sugar, which then causes swings in our energy levels.” She recommends eliminating the processed sugars in your daily diet, and finding natural sugar alternatives. “For example, I have made a raw cacao bark, which hits my chocolate craving but doesn't leave me with the high-sugar intake,” says Lawless.

Some tips? Ditch the yogurt and fruit combo cups—start with plain yogurt and slice your own fruit to cut those additional sugary teaspoons. When you’re properly fueled and free from an impending sugar crash—ditch the indoors and take a stroll through the park or a nice jog around the neighborhood. Oftentimes to beat that lethargy you need to amp up your workout routine!

2. Your workouts are getting harder—and shorter

Has your mile count gone from four to two? Not getting as many flights in on the stair master? Chalk it up to sugar—and those pesky sports drinks.

According to Julie Corliss, executive editor of the Harvard Heart Letter, sugar-sweetened beverages like Powerade and Gatorade—which claim to replenish our electrolytes and energize our tired bodies—are a double-edged sword. They spike our blood sugar in the short term but then deflate our energies later on.

The sugar contained in the sports drinks and energy chews we take before workouts are “empty calories," that lack fiber, vitamins or any other necessary minerals to truly revitalize the body in the long term.

Life is a marathon—not a sugar-induced sprint. Take the time to fuel your body the right way. An ideal pre-workout meal mixes both simple carbohydrates and protein—so opt for a Greek yogurt and banana and you’ll be well on your way to mile six, seven or even eight.

3. You’re breaking out

It’s winter and the second semester is starting back up—which means snow clouds and stress. Don’t let your sugar intake add to the reasons why you’re breaking out.

Sugar spikes insulin levels in the body and when insulin levels rise, so do the amount of whiteheads. Stay away from foods like white bread, sweetened cereals (say goodbye to those Lucky Charms) and pasta that the body breaks down quickly. The faster the foods break down the higher the levels of insulin—and the higher your dermatologist bill will be.

Keri Glassman, celebrity nutritionist and contributing author in partnership with Healthline.com’s Break Up with Sugar Campaign, admits to the challenges of breaking that mid-afternoon chocolate craving. So how do we starve off these urges and the messy side effects of the sugar overload? Keri says, “Pack your meals with protein, which helps you stay satisfied longer and ward off those sugar cravings. But make sure you are eating enough throughout the day. I recommend snacks such as nuts, slices of turkey or plain, full-fat Greek yogurt topped with hemp seeds.”

4. You’re never truly full—despite the bloat

You’re hungry, but, you haven’t eaten much today other than some Lay’s potato chips, Starbucks’ red velvet cupcakes, a yogurt and two scones—and some Chipotle. But according to Amy Schumer, that stuff goes right through you. Are you bloated—but still starving? Chances are you’re indulging in some serious empty sugar calories.

Sugar causes your body’s blood sugar levels to rise and large amounts of insulin to be released. Keri confirms sugar’s inability to satisfy hunger, but rather increase those cravings—she says, “Your body gets accustomed to being fueled with a high level of sugar, so when you consume less, you feel out of sorts — which causes you to reach for more sugar. This is bad news because changes in blood sugar can disrupt sleep, cause increased consumption of calories, and lead to fatigue.”

Basically, those potato chips that you thought would satisfy the hunger just increased your cravings! No wonder you can never have one chip.

For Kristen Van Buren, a student at High Point, when her sugar intake is too high, she says, “I would feel bloated but not full and I would also have energy spikes throughout the day.” A helpful tip to stay healthy and full—an apple a day can help keep the hunger away. The fiber and water from the fruit help weaken those pesky cravings before your next meal!

5. Your clothes are getting tighter

It’s time to face the facts—the wiggle-and-tug dance you’ve been doing to pull on your Levi’s is looking more and more absurd. It’s best to pinpoint the source of the weight gain. Our bet—along with the American Heart Association—is on sugar.

According to the AHA, Americans have steadily increased their intake of added sugars over the past 30 years. The nationwide sugar craze has resulted in an “obesity epidemic.” You see, sugar offers us all the calories and zero of the nutrients needed for a strong and lean body. Seems like a pretty unfair trade to us.

Dr. Willis says, “Too much sugar can lead to excess calorie intake, which can lead to weight gain. Someone who is overweight or who is gaining weight should look at their caloric intake and assess excesses (sugar is surely one possible culprit).”

So, don’t play into sugar’s manipulative hand. The taste of the Snickers bar or a cup of soda lasts a total of five minutes—but the satisfaction of a healthy body will last you well past the time those Levi’s are too worn to wear.

Samantha Burke, a recent graduate of Siena College says, “I went from always having juice or soda when I was thirsty to drinking mostly water all day every day—and it helped a lot with maintaining my weight!” Samantha recommends carrying around a personal Brita bottle (or a S’well of the like) and refilling it throughout the day.

6. You’re feeling especially scrooge-like

Bah-humbug. You’re feeling pessimistic and you don’t know why. We’re here to help you make sense of the inexplicable gloom.

We’ve stressed the deficiencies of sugar in your body’s nutrients department. Dr. Willis says, “Nutritionists might call this nutrient displacement because the sugar foods can displace foods that might contain beneficial nutrients.” As empty calories come in with nothing beneficial to show for it, Dr. Willis explains you might feel an overall “cruddy” feeling. “Whenever someone says they don't feel well or don't feel they have the energy or mood they used to, it's a good idea to take a look their diet as a whole.”

Dr. Willis stresses the importance of sugar in consideration with the larger picture of your diet as a whole. That being said—you should tailor your diet to what works best for your daily schedule, your exercise regiment and most importantly, your tastebuds.

“Some people might do really well choosing some portioned controlled sizes of their favorite sugar foods. For example, the mini-mini candy bars. Choosing to have a little of what they really want might be better than trying to find a ‘healthy’ food that tastes sweet but isn't satisfying.  Other people may benefit more from finding their favorite sweet fruits that can satisfy a craving,” Dr. Willis says.

Like most things in life—sugar is okay in moderation. We’ve all been there when that pint of Ben & Jerry’s is calling our names after a long day. Just be careful that pint doesn’t turn into a gallon—and an occasional treat doesn’t become a habit.

Keri agrees that an occasional indulgence of a sugary snack is OK—just don't let those cravings control you. Keri encourages you: "Envision your future self with more energy, better skin, less bloating, a clearer mind and a stronger immune system—all benefits of dramatically lowering your sugar intake."

Sugar is sweet—but a healthy lifestyle is sweeter.

People Are Burning 'Harry Potter' Books, & J.K. Rowling Has a SAVAGE Response

Besides her incredible books that (let’s be honest) we all fangirled over as kids, J.K. Rowling has made quite a name for herself on Twitter. Her savage, biting responses to haters bring out the nasty woman in all of us—especially when our favorite childhood books are threatened.

For a Twitter user that claimed they’d “burn all her books and movies,” J.K. Rowling fired back with a classically nasty response.

And just a day after that, another Harry Potter fan of 17 years tweeted they’d burned all their books. Rowling didn’t miss a beat.

Since Trump’s inauguration, Rowling has been super vocal about her political beliefs and some (former) Harry Potter fans just aren’t having it. But seriously, do you really have to burn books? We think not, but it’s definitely produced some amusing Tweets. Here are more of our faves:

So This is What Corinne Means When She Says She 'Runs a Multi-Million Dollar Company'

Just about everybody, whether they watch The Bachelor or not, knows who Corinne Olympios is. The one with the nanny that makes "cheese pasta," who "runs a multi-million dollar company," and according to Taylor, has low emotional intelligence. She even missed a rose ceremony because she took a long nap, which is honestly so relatable. Bachelor Nation loves to hate her.

Throughout the season, Corinne has been vague about her family's business. However, in an interview with Glamour, she said, "I run my family's online business, doing epoxy floorings and roof coatings." Turns out that the company is called ArmorGarage.

According to PopSugar, the company supplies epoxy coatings and flooring products to the U.S. military, Fortune 500 companies, shops and home owners. It's based in Florida, where Corinne works and lives. She reportedly works more on the sales side of ArmorGarage, while her father James Olympios is the owner.

Are you as surprised as us? It's not exactly the type of business we can see her running, but we're sure she does it with confidence.

Her profile on Model Mayhem says, "No job is too little or too big. Being on set is my happy place and I will do whatever it takes to fulfill my dreams and goals."

Okay, Corinne. You're annoying, but we love the go-getter attitude.

California Woman Receives Largest Title IX Settlement After Mishandling of Allegations

Imagine you miss your graduation because you are in the hospital. Now imagine you're in the hospital, missing your graduation, because you were raped and the heinous crime was committed by none other than your professor who is speaking at your graduation, the one you are missing. And when you report it to your school, they basically shrug it off. Sounds like a nightmare, right? Well, it is the nightmare Luz Portillo lived on June 14, 2015. And because of it, Portillo just got the largest settlement in Title IX history

According to BuzzFeed, University of California Regents settled with Portillo and her lawyers for $1.15 Million for its mishandling of her sexual assault by a faculty member January 31.  The settlement, according to her lawyers, is the largest or one of the largest Title IX settlement in history. The settlement, however, does not include an admission of negligence on behalf of the university, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel. The lawsuit was brought against the university because, according to Portillo and her attorneys, they previously ignored other sexual harassment claims the faculty member which enabled him to rape Ms. Portillo. Portillo told BuzzFeed her attacker was known for "inviting students for beers, had one time 'moved a class to the bar' and allegedly dated other students."

The lawsuit stated that the University knew about the predatory actions of the professor, prior to the assault before but never attempted to stop him, making them culpable. Portillo’s lawyer, John Kristensen, said“Prior to the June 13, 2015 rape of Plaintiff, UCSC was aware… that the Professor was sexually harrassing students in direct violation of its own faculty code.” He also said the University “remained indifferent” to these allegations and did not investigate or reprimand the professor. Portillo maintains this, telling BuzzFeed she received "very little help" from the University but found support in "other women from other schools who went public with their sexual assault."

The accused Latin American professor, Hector Perla Jr., had been accused of both sexual harassment and fraternizing with students before the night of Portillo's attack. On the night Portillo was raped, she alleges Perla took her and another student out for wine tasting, under the guise of celebrating the students' graduation. While there, he made her and the student drink copious amounts of wine, getting them drunk. He subsequently took the pair back to his house, where he made them drink even more and then forced them to have sex. Portillo was not full conscious and therefore unable to consent to any sexual relations. Portillo reported the rape to the school, which she says “minimized what happened.”

UCSC, however, denies this telling of events. In fact, they posted a response to the settlement Monday January 31, 2017. “As soon as these allegations were reported, the campus acted swiftly to address the victim’s claims, which appeared to be clear violations of the UC Santa Cruz policy on sexual violence and sexual harassment.” In the statement, they also claim they took immediate action and that they immediately launched inquiries when warranted.

Perla resigned from his position as assistant professor June 2016 after the University began formal disciplinary hearings regarding the incident. Portillo told BuzzFeed she now plans to go to law school, which she put off because of her assault.

The March For Science Now has an Official Date

It was just a few weeks ago when thousands of women showed up to march in Washington, DC and across the globe to advocate for equal rights. But it didn't stop there. In fact, that march was just the beginning.

Today, the March for Science, a march founded in order to make a statement that science is crucial and important in our society, announced that they will be hosting a march in Washington, DC on Earth Day to spread the word that "the politicization of science, which has given policymakers permission to reject overwhelming evidence, is a critical and urgent matter," according to their website. Could that date be any more perfect? Not really.

The march, which will be comprised of scientists and advocates from all over the country, is primarily happening because "recent rhetoric" is harmful to the world and it needs to be discussed, particularly the gag order that the Trump administration placed on certain government researchers that order's them to stay silent on the topic of climate change, according to Refinery29

For more information about the march and how to participate, check out the March for Science website

12 Things to Do If You’re Sick of the Single Life

0
0

It’s cuffing season, so put your hands up single ladies, this article is for you! Some of us who belong to the single population get sick and tired of being on our own. But who says it has to be this way? Through a few simple steps you can learn to either thrive as a single person or put yourself out there in new ways that will have you well on your way to changing your Facebook relationship status.

1.Ask yourself why you’re single

To understand why you’re on a single streak, it’s best to identify why so you can take steps to move into a relationship if that’s what you want. Being single isn’t a bad thing, and this question isn’t to tear yourself down but rather to analyze where you are in your life and where you see yourself going.

Maybe you spend a lot of time by yourself or need some tips on how to let people knowyou’re into them. So whether you’ve just been working on yourself for the past few months, focusing on school or taking a break from guys, think about what the best steps are for moving into a relationship.

2. Don’t lower your standards

No matter how much you want to be in a relationship, make sure you never lower your standards. Now these shouldn’t be ridiculous like your future SO just has to have blue eyes and dark hair, though that’s great if it works out that way. Say it’s important that your future SO has goals and aspirations. Don’t settle for someone who has no idea what they plan on doing and aren’t even trying. Find out what’s important to you and don’t compromise.

3. Understand that it’s okay to be single

The longer you’re single, the more time you have to develop yourself to be an amazing person when you are in a relationship. And if you’re sad about being single, that’s plau too. Acknowledge and accept your feelings for what they are, but remember to look on the bright side when you’re ready.

4. Make yourself (more) awesome

Being single can be an opportunity to improve the current you. Take the time you might be spending in a relationship and devote it to making a cooler version of yourself. Go kayaking, learn to cook an amazing dish (for yourself) or volunteer at the local shelter. Find something that will help you reach your goals in the future and make you a more interesting person.

5. Immerse yourself in learning

Finding ways to engage in self-learning encourages you to enjoy developing yourself and loving who you are. Join a book club or learn how to teach Pilates all on your own. The confidence you’ll gain in having this new knowledge will attract others who will be relationship material.

6. Work on your other relationships

Investing in non-romantic relationships is essential to your mental health. Plan a girls’ night in with your squad or have a long phone call with one of your siblings. Reconnect with a friend you haven’t heard from in a while. Whether it’s growing in your faith or strengthening your friendships, recognizing that an SO is not the only source for human intimacy and closeness will help you be a mature individual and a better SO to someone else in the future.

7. Go do things by yourself

One of the best things you can do as a single person is learn to be happy independently. Visit your favorite book or record store just to browse. Head to a coffee shop with only your own company. Try and find ways to relish being on your own doing what you love. If it’s the right moment, a fellow record collector might just get your number.

8. Force yourself to be social

This may be counterintuitive to the above suggestion. But having the ability to be comfortable both on your own and in social settings will help in starting a relationship. If you’re typically the grandma or awkward turtle of your friend group, ask one of your fun-loving, social friends if you can shadow them for a night out. If going out isn’t your thing, join a group or club to meet new people. The more people you engage with, the more likely you are to create a network that contains someone you’re compatible with.

9. Ask around

Ask your girl or guy friends if they know any people who are looking to date. They just might be willing to help you out. It could be that your friends have no idea you’re trying for a relationship and you just have to let them know. Your future SO could be a mutual friend away.

10. Step up your flirting skills

Still not sure how to flirt? Maybe the guy you like just doesn’t know you’re into him. It might be time to brush up and get some professional tips to get you past level zero in flirting.

11. Get online

Many girls are just not into online dating. And while it can have disastrous results, it can also be a new way to find your future SO. You may even find your true love.

12. Make the first move

I am a firm believer that at least once in every woman’s life, she should make the first move. If you see someone in class you think is just too cute to ignore, ask them to study and maybe text them later to see if they want to go out for coffee. Guys are often just waiting until a girl shows interest before they start pursuing a relationship.

In the end, you need to know that the right person will often come at the time you least expect it. All you can do is try not to freak out in between and be the most amazing single person possible.

19 Reasons You Should Never Stop Wearing Leggings

0
0

Whether leggings are an appropriate form of clothing seems like the question of the century. There are a lot of mixed feelings towards leggings. While some people think they’re a godsend, other believe we need to stop wearing these fashion tragedies immediately. We think that there are absolutely no good reasons for anyone to tell you not to wear leggings. In fact, here are 19 of our favorite reasons why you should never stop rocking leggings (despite what others may say)!

1. They are literally the comfiest things ever made

They’re the only bottoms that you have absolutely no problem falling asleep in.

2. There are leggings for every types of occasion

Faux leather leggings, jean leggings, patterned leggings, fleece-lined leggings…you have to have them all!

3. They’re the only things that feel like pajamas without looking like pajamas

No one could ever guess that you slept in them last night.

4. They’re better for traveling because they’re lighter

That means more room for your shoes!

5. You have no problem wearing them with boots (unlike jeans)

Just because jeans say they’re “boot cut” doesn’t mean they’re going to tuck nicely into your boots.

6. They don’t cut off your circulation

Did you know someone once died trying to fit into skinny jeans?

7. They’re the perfect solution for when your top is too long to be a shirt, but too short to be a dress

They literally resolved the problem of the century.

8. One word: Jeggings

These are God’s greatest gift to the modern millennial woman.

9. Most of our favorite celebrities regularly rock leggings

If Beyoncé wears them, then I’m going to wear them.

10. You have complete flexibility in them

You need me to climb a tree to save that cat? Lucky I have my leggings on!

11. They show off your curves

There’s nothing wrong with flaunting what you got, if that’s what you want!

12. They looked good with literally any type of shoe

And this means a whole new world of possible outfits.

13. They are usually super inexpensive

You can own dozens and dozens of pairs without breaking the bank.

14. You can easily transition them from day-to-night attire

Take off the hoodie and throw a sparkly top on with heels and you’re ready to party.

15. They can also easily transition into gym clothes

giphy.gif

Just trade your top for a sports bra and hit those weights!

16. You can eat whatever you want without your pants feeling too tight

This means they’re perfect for Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts!

17. High-waisted leggings can help hold everything in (comfortably)

You can never tell whether I’ve had Chipotle or not.

18. Anyone who is against leggings has probably just never owned a pair

And thus we should all feel sorry for them.

19. Because no one should tell you how you should or should not dress

Fashion isn’t about pleasing anyone else but yourself!

Even if leggings aren’t your style, you can’t deny the many benefits they offer the modern woman. Don’t be discouraged if someone tells you that you shouldn’t wear leggings. Just remember you have the comfiest pants to cuddle up in when you go home at night, and they probably don’t.

A Response to Those Who Called Me "Selfish" For Not Wanting Kids

0
0

In January, Charlotte Emeljanow wrote "An Open Letter to the Girl Who Doesn't Want Kids." Some commenters called her selfish. This is her response.

I know what I want. I want to get married in a pretty white dress. I want to wake up every morning and kiss the man I love. I want to have a successful career in a job that I am passionate about. I want to eat my way through Europe, backpack through Southeast Asia and roadtrip from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon. But I don’t know if I want children.

This isn’t because I don’t think I could offer a child a good life. Or because I am so young that I am still a child myself. This is because, for the first time in my life, I am choosing to live selfishly. For years I have done everything in my power to make everyone around me happy. In forgoing a life of motherhood, I am finally choosing myself above everyone else.

I’m sure it is still possible to do the things I hope to do as well as be a mother. I don’t doubt that there are women out there who have found perfect harmony among their selfish ambitions and motherhood. But it would be impossible to say that having a child doesn’t have to change you, because it does. Yes, I could very well still travel the world and have a successful career and be a supermom, simultaneously. But can I really say that as soon as the nurse puts that child in my arms, I won’t start rewriting my plans to coincide with the promise of their future? I know myself and I know that having a child, for me, would mean sacrificing my own dreams for theirs.

So yes, I am choosing to be selfish. But I am not ashamed of this. If wanting the things that I want and living my life according to my own terms makes me selfish, then so be it. It is not my responsibility to have children just because I am able to do so, and I shouldn’t feel guilty because there are women out there who want children but can’t have them. Wouldn’t it be worse to have a child out of biological obligation rather than not have a child at all? Isn’t it archaic to judge a woman for choosing to live selfishly?

I am a 21-year-old woman. I have made a choice about my life that may be controversial. Some people may not agree with me, or may call me selfish for making this choice. But it is my body, and it is my life, and if I were a man writing this post, would you even bat an eye? I think it's important, especially now, to redefine what successful womanhood looks like. Becoming a mother is a choice, not a requirement. Being selfish is part of being human, not being a man. And having dreams is something that should be encouraged, not adapted to fit a child.

Beyoncé Just Shared Even More Photos of Her Gorgeous Baby Bump

2017 became the best year in a while (maybe since 2011 when we got this announcement?) after Beyoncé revealed that she’s pregnant again, this time with twins. Now, because Queen Bey just gets us, she’s released a full pregnancy photo album, Cosmopolitan reports.

Called “I Have Three Hearts,” Beyoncé’s album keeps up the floral theme her initial photo announcement introduced, displaying Bey and her bump on top of a car, resting on a flowery sofa and even hanging out with soon-to-be big sis Blue Ivy.

Some throwback pics were even in the batch, including a series of photos of Beyoncé’s growing stomach when pregnant with Blue and a snapshot from back then when she was suffering from morning sickness. Yes, Beyoncé gets nauseous just like the rest of us.

I highly recommend checking out every one of these photos (and maybe making looking at them your morning routine...?). These babies are already some of the most photo-savvy kids out there.

Beyoncé May Have Hinted That She Was Expecting Twins A While Ago

Everyone is still reeling from Beyoncé’s surprise announcement that she’s expecting twins, and now her superfans think that she actually shared the news discreetly on Instagram almost two months ago, Cosmopolitan reports.

When Beyoncé shared a slideshow of photos around Christmastime, she held fabric over her stomach in one photo and then threw up a peace sign in another. Now that we know she was pregnant at the time, some people believe that these poses were Bey's way of saying she had twins on the way.

It may be a bit of a stretch, but people online are all over trying to prove the theory.

Other Twitter folk also claimed that her growing stomach is noticeable in the photos, while some believe that she even hinted about her pregnancy 26 weeks ago, when she posted another peace sign photo.

Sneaky hints aside, we still can't get over how excited we are for Beyoncé and her family.

Kim Kardashian & Chrissy Teigen Are Starting a Book Club & You Can Join

In a move no one was expecting, Chrissy Teigen and Kim Kardashian are starting a book club together, HelloGiggles reports. Although Kim usually wouldn’t be our first pick for great book recommendations, she definitely seems to get inspired by others’ favorite reads, seeing as she turned to Twitter this week for new books to check out.

Tons of people offered suggestions, from funny to serious (Goodnight Moon, anyone?), but it wasn’t enough for Kim. By the next day, she had returned to Twitter to share the big bookish news.

Kim, Chrissy and their celebrity hairstylist friend Jen Atkin will first read Betty J. Eadie's 1994 book Embraced by the Light: The Most Profound and Complete Near-Death Experience EverThe book covers Eadie dying during surgery but then returning to life. Um, cool, I guess?

According to Chrissy, all someone has to do to join the new club is get the book and start reading. The group ought to hit it big soon—it looks like Kim is adding a book club feature on her official app.

Enjoying the club's first book might require an acquired taste, but this is definitely something to keep an eye on for other unexpectedly good reads.

2 Female Republican Senators Have Put the Confirmation of Trump’s Education Secretary Pick in Danger

While many Democrats have openly opposed President Donald Trump’s education secretary pick, Betsy DeVos, because she seems to know almost nothing about the job she’s been nominated for, it was likely that she’d get the job anyway due to the Republican majority in Congress. But DeVos may not be secretary of education after all—Two Republican senators have announced that they will oppose DeVos, and if one more Republican turns, the billionaire activist won’t have enough votes to be confirmed.

Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska were the two who said they would not vote for DeVos. If only they choose to oppose her, the vote for DeVos would be 50-50, and Vice President Mike Pence would have to cast a vote to break the tie. He would vote to confirm DeVos. But if any more Republicans decide to vote against the confirmation, she would be out of luck.

“I think that Mrs. DeVos has much to learn about our nation’s public schools,” Sen. Murkowski said, according to The New York Times.

DeVos has literally zero experience in public schools—she didn’t even attend one, nor did any of her children. Her big thing is school choice, or the idea that parents should be able to choose whether their kid goes to public, private or a charter school. The problem with this approach is that it leaves little incentive for regular public schools to improve.

The nominee also said a lot of weird stuff in her confirmation, like justifying guns in schools by saying teachers might need to defend against grizzly bears. And she didn’t seem to know anything about the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, federal civil rights law that protects students with disabilities. She also has never used any kind of financial aid, and so doesn’t have a lot of experience with the hot topic of struggling to pay for college.

There probably won’t be a final vote on DeVos’s confirmation until Monday, according to The Hill. Even if she is still confirmed, the two Republicans who turned against her are an example of phone calls to representatives actually working—Sen. Murkowski said on the Senate floor that her office “heard from thousands, truly thousands, of Alaskans who shared their concerns” about DeVos.

4 Ways to Stay Motivated to Work Out

We’ve all been there – a few weeks into January and our motivation to exercise is slowly fizzling out. For those of us in colder climates, it’s even harder to stay on track. Cuddling up on the couch on a cold day is so much easier to do than hauling over to the gym to get your workout in. I’ve been working out regularly for the last five years or so, and I still find it hard to stick to my fitness routine! Over the years, I’ve realized that there are a few things that keep me motivated. Hopefully, they work for you too.

1. Get a workout buddy

Nothing makes me feel worse than bailing on a friend I planned a workout with. Even if I REALLY don’t want to go, if the plans are set, chances are I’m showing up. My friend Jen is my go-to workout buddy, and we often share our class schedule at the beginning of every week to see where we can work out together. I recommend either bringing a friend along to your workout, or start making friends at your gym to hold you accountable when you don’t show up. Works like a charm.

2. Switch things up

Don’t do the same thing every. single. day. You’ll get bored quickly and it will be easier to skip out altogether. I try to keep things interesting by doing 2-3 different workouts per week. One day I’ll spin, the other I’ll do circuit training, another day I’ll do yoga or pilates. Changing things up is not only good for you mentally, but also good for your body. The more you switch things up in your fitness regimen, the better results you’ll see.

Trump Threatens to Cut UC Berkeley's Funding After Protests Lead to Cancellation of Yiannopoulos Talk

A speech at University of California, Berkeley by Breitbart editor and notorious troll, Milo Yiannopoulos, was cancelled Wednesday night amid protests that turned violent. The following morning, President Donald Trump took to Twitter and threatened to withdraw federal funding from the university.

Yiannopoulos is well-known across the internet for his inflammatory conservative views, including the denunciation of rape culture as a myth and a belief that transgender people are mentally ill. He was banned from Twitter last year for his role harassing Saturday Night Live’s Leslie Jones. He is currently on a speaking tour of colleges across the country. Already, one speech at UC Davis was canceled in response to protests.

According to The Los Angeles Times, UC Berkeley was determined to have Yiannopoulos speak as scheduled, even going so far as to bring in extra police officers from other University of California campuses. But with over 1,500 protesters assembled, the university decided to cancel the event two hours before Yiannopoulos even arrived on campus.

The protest, organized on Facebook by Bay Area Socialist Alternative, was largely peaceful, but as BuzzFeed News reported, small groups wearing black and identifying as anti-fascists were largely responsible for the more violent happenings. ATMs were smashed and vandalized and, at one point, a light fixture was toppled, causing a small fire. According to The Huffington Post, students were advised to shelter in place as the campus went into lockdown.

UC Berkeley was quick to condemn the violence. Dan Mogulof, a UC Berkeley spokesman told The L.A. Times, "We thoroughly condemn the violence and lawless behavior and we deeply regret that the actions of a few trampled on the 1st Amendment rights of others.” The Berkeley College Republicans, the group behind the event, released a statement lamenting that their “constitutional right to free speech was silenced by criminals and thugs.” Yiannopoulos was also quick to blame the “violent left-wing protestors” in a statement on Facebook and said, “One thing we do know for sure: the Left is absolutely terrified of free speech and will do literally anything to shut it down.” And then the president waded into the mix.

The University of California system receives billions of dollars each year from the federal government in support of various programs across all ten of their campuses. UC Berkeley alone receives nearly $8.5 billion for education, research and healthcare. Following the president’s tweet, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) issued a statement condemning the violence while still standing firm against Trump. “President Donald Trump cannot bully our university into silence,” Lee’s statement read. “Simply put, President Trump’s empty threat to cut funding from UC Berkeley is an abuse of power.”

The 5 Things I Learned About Love as a Professional Bridesmaid

I thought I knew enough about love from finding it, losing it, and then finding it and losing it again, my own personal game of hide-and-go-seek with a feeling that resembled acid reflux, but I was wrong.

At the age of 26, I didn’t know much, except that I was really successful at falling for guys who were covered in red flags, draped around them like a string of flickering Christmas lights.

I imagined that finding someone to love, and love me back, was more difficult than crossing the finish line at an Iron Man competition or winning the lottery. That may have been because the meet-cute moment I had dreamed of since age 13, when I’d crash into my Mr. Forever at a bookstore during a buy-one-get-one-free sale, and when he’d catch my stack of plummeting books in his hands before they landed on the floor, was a way to meet someone that was likely becoming extinct. The most popular way people were starting their adventure toward finding love, these days, was on dating apps, letting their thumb take over the driver’s wheel, swiping left and right on potential suitors.

I boycotted dating apps once, twice... okay fine, I went through a download-and-delete cycle more times than there are months in a year.

My feelings toward love were scrambled and seemingly depleted, until I started working weddings as a “professional bridesmaid”. In 2014, after being a bridesmaid for my friends more than a half a dozen times, and after my life began suddenly drawing too many parallels to Katherine Heigl’s character in 27 Dresses, I started a business, called Bridesmaid for Hire, where strangers could hire me to be their bridesmaid. As crazy and kooky as it sounds, in the past two years, I’ve had the pleasure of standing by over 40 brides' side, whether virtually or in-person, on one of the most intimate and emotional hurricane-like day of their lives.

The on-the-job experience I racked up along the way, taught me many things, which led me to write the tell-all book, Always a Bridesmaid (For Hire). First, it taught me that I really don’t think I want to ever have a wedding of my own. There are just too many moving pieces, ceiling-high expectations, and people to pay for just one single eight-hour party. Second, it taught me that no bride should ever drink a Diet Coke while in their wedding dress, unless there is a giant blanket splayed over them (I have seen too many dresses ruined by too many pre-wedding food and drink stains). But perhaps most importantly, the best lessons I’ve learned have been about love.

Here are five eye-opening pieces of advice I’ve learned from working closely with brides-to-be that I’d like to share with you.

1. Listen to Your Gut

You can learn a lot about yourself and what you really want by just trusting your gut. If you’re wondering if the person you’re going to marry is the “right person," or if you should walk away from a relationship that’s constantly getting you all riled up, trust the voice inside your gut that’s most likely screaming at you to do one thing over another.

2. One Size Does Not Fit All

Love between two people is never the same. Relationships are different, people are different, and so is love. You can’t compare and contrast, you just have to find a person and build a relationship with them that works for the two of you.

3. You Can’t Rush to Find It

I once had a bride tell me that she was settling. That she was getting married to a person she didn’t think was “the one” but he was “someone” and that for her is good enough. From that situation, I learned that love isn’t something that can be rushed, even if you’re extra eager to settle down. It’s more about putting yourself out there, meeting many different people, and staying patient and hopeful that you will, eventually, find a person who is truly more than just “someone,” because how unromantic is that?

4. It’s a True Gamble

Love is a risk. Even though right now, in this very moment, you’re feeling entranced by the love you have for a person, it doesn’t mean that that can’t change later on. What’s most important is that, if you do take the gamble on someone and decide to build a future with them, you find ways to grow, communicate, and keep on respecting and trusting each other.

5. There’s No Such Thing as Perfect

Ditch the idea that you want to settle down with the most perfect person you can find. We’re all flawed in many ways. It’s less about finding someone who checks off all the boxes on your ultimate list of requirements, and more about choosing someone who complements you. Someone who isn’t always trying to fix you, but adores you for who you are and, in turn, makes you become a better person on your own. Every relationship has its ups, its downs, and its room for improvement.

More than anything else, being a professional bridesmaid for strangers has taught me that we never truly know how a person can influence and change our lives. The best lessons we learn, most of the time, come when we’re helping others, or in my case, walking down the aisle for someone who is about to say "I do."
