Here's How 'Grey's Anatomy' Plans to Deal With Camilla Luddington's Pregnancy

Will Camilla Luddington’s real-life pregnancy be written into Jo Wilson’s storyline on Grey’s Anatomy? This question is technically up for debate because there has been no official word from the show. But Camilla did drop a few hints in a recent interview with TVLine.

“As of right now they are definitely hiding it,” the actress revealed. “The struggle has just started.”

But because of the unpredictability of the ABC series, this could certainly change during the season, Luddington admitted. “We have a lot more episodes to go this season, and these things can get sprung on us at a table read, so I really can’t say for sure if it will stay that way.”

This wouldn't be the first time a baby bump was kept under wraps on a Shonda Rhimes series. When fellow Shondaland star Kerry Washington was pregnant, the IRL development wasn’t included in her character arc, and her baby bump was hidden during shooting.

Jo’s storyline could go either way, and for now it's looking like a little one won't be on the way for the doc. But can't you just picture Jo with a baby? Never say never.

Melania Trump Might Wear Ralph Lauren for the Inauguration

Choosing what to wear on your husband’s inauguration day must be pretty hard. Not only will millions of Americans be watching, but it will also be the first outfit Melania will wear as the First Lady of the United States. I can only imagine the amount of pressure that the usually well-coiffed Melania Trump is under in the days leading up to her husband, President-Elect Donald Trump, taking the presidential oath.

To add more pressure, the future FLOTUS doesn’t have that many options when choosing what she should wear for the big day. Many prominent designers, such as Marc Jacobs and Diane Von Furstenberg, have come forward over the past few months to publicly announce that they will not be dressing Trump. Jacobs backed his reasoning stating "I have no interest whatsoever in dressing Melania Trump. I didn't see [Sophie Theallet's] letter. Personally, I'd rather put my energy into helping out those who will be hurt by [Donald] Trump and his supporters.”

While other big names in the fashion industry chose political sides and alliances, designer Cynthia Rowley stepped forward to provide a neutral ground. “In the midst of this heated debate, the question actually seems somewhat irrelevant," Rowley said. "She can simply purchase whatever she wants, so how can we control it? Just because she’s shown wearing a designer does not mean that designer is endorsing her, her husband or any of their beliefs. Checking someone’s ethical beliefs before they’re allowed to purchase, sets up an exclusionary dynamic that feeds into the exact mentality that is preventing us from moving forward in a positive direction. Some people say fashion and politics should never mix, but when given the choice, I think you should address and dress your conscience.”

In the midst of the drama, WWD reports that Melania Trump will wear Ralph Lauren to the inauguration. While Lauren himself is an outspoken Hillary Clinton supporter, dressing the other candidate on numerous occasions, he has been linked to the Trump family, as Melania wore a white jumpsuit from the brand on election night.

It has not been confirmed that the custom-made gown that the designer is creating for Melania is necessarily for the inauguration. The Trumps will be attending many high-profile events over the next week, including a dinner hosted for 1,500 people. Regardless of when the dress will be worn, it can be certain that Lauren will be thrust into every American's radar, from the politically minded to the fashion fanatics.

5 Reasons You Are Experiencing Senioritis

$

The time of year has officially hit in which many of us are catching the disease formally known as ‘senioritis.’ Symptoms include procrastination, desire for sleep, lost or increased appetite and extreme stress. Senioritis does not just appear because you are in your senior year. There are many different reasons why you could be experiencing these symptoms. So take some time to reflect, and take that shot of “you’ve-got-this” to keep moving forward!

1. Your workload

One obvious reason you are experiencing senioritis is the amount of work that you have to complete. At this point you are probably enrolled in your core major requirements, working multiple jobs, thinking about a potential thesis—and let’s not forget those extracurriculars. No wonder you want to procrastinate. It is exhausting thinking about all that you have to do.

Solution

Tara Cappellucci, a senior at Framingham State University, recommends working on time management. “I always tell other people if I have something school or work related later," she says. "I tend to be forgetful, so my friends are able to remind me if I do." There are also all different types of planners and organizational tools that you can use to keep yourself and your work together.

2. You have fear of missing out

It’s Thursday night and everyone is getting dressed up and ready for a night out. They ask you to come and you keep having to say no because Assignment A is due tomorrow and Exam 3 is next week. But instead of actually being productive while everyone else is having fun not worrying about their responsibilities, you just sit in your room scrolling through Instagram and await drunken snapchats from your roommates. You wish you there with them, but you’re not. Domini Batista, a junior at Framingham State University, says, “I tell myself that there is time for me when in reality there isn’t any.”

Solution

Ensure that you set time aside for yourself and for the people you want to spend time with. It can be difficult, but knowing that you will be seeing them soon will be a reminder that you don’t have anything to be afraid of missing. You will be with them soon enough.

3. You haven't mastered the art of adulting

AKA your least favorite word. You keep worrying about the inevitable post-grad life and what it means to actually be an adult. Your parents tell you to start paying your own bills. You see your peers all starting to get their own apartments, finding their dream jobs and getting engaged. You can’t even fathom how they know what to do next.

Solution

Talk to a professional. There are many accessible on-campus resources that could help you—whether it’s a career counselor, school psychologist or someone in residence life who has information about nearby apartment listings. There are always people around who are willing to listen and point you in the right direction.

4. You aren't satisfied with your relationships

You’re still single. Or you don’t know where you and your significant other stand after graduation. Your friends are moving on to bigger and better things. Your family keeps pressuring you to make decisions about what is going to happen to you within the next few dreaded months. It feels as if all of those important people in your life are nowhere near where you want or need them to be. You feel alone and that’s okay. You will always have people in your life but learning how to be independent can be a game changer as well.

Solution

Talk to the people in your life. Communication is a necessity for all relationships and not everyone is willing to make the first step towards improvement. Taking the time to reach out to others can benefit your relationship, or at least let you know where you stand with them.

5. You don't have much time left

You can see the light at the end of the tunnel. You are so close to being done that you just can’t even anymore. All of your hard work has been paying off and you have just about earned that expensive piece of paper that you will say is your degree. Maddie Alper, a senior at Framingham State University, says, “Knowing how close I am to putting on that cap and gown and being done with the undergrad work is really taunting to me, and every senior I know.” You’ve had fun, fallen in love, cried over things you know won’t be important in the future, napped when you shouldn’t have and gotten through the terror that is finals week time and time again. You’ve done it all and you are ready to do so much more.

All of these things just mean that you are in the same position as everyone else. Even if you can’t sing along to Taylor Swift and feel 22, you have still completed an education that has shaped you into the person you are today. Don’t let senioritis get the best of you.

25 Things I Learned About Life In Cuba (After 53 Years of Fidel Castro Rule)

This article has been syndicated to Her Campus from Sher She Goes, an InfluenceHer Collective member. Read the full post here.

This is a sponsored post by Fathom.

When I boarded Fathom’s small ship to head off to Cuba for a week, I had no idea what to expect. I thought perhaps the people might have an aversion to Americans suddenly flooding the country. Perhaps the American / Cuba political thaw might also extend to the people.

It just so happened that the week I spent in Cuba (November 27th – December 4th) was just days after Fidel Castro passed away and the entire country plunged into official mourning for 9 days. This meant no music, no alcohol, no dancing, no nightlife and instead the Cuban people paid their solemn respects and farewells to one of their country’s longest leaders.

What attracted me most about seeing Cuba with Fathom Travel was the opportunity for an immersive, People to People experience where we as tourists would have chance to visit, speak and spend time with local Cubans to understand their daily life and history. Here’s a compilation of what I learned and experienced on that journey.

Life in Cuba

POLITICS

1 Cubans (in Cuba) by and large like and support Fidel Castro. While the Cubans in Miami threw a jubilant celebration, those who remained in Cuba come from a different socioeconomic class and strata of society and were sad at his passing. The exodus of Cubans in the 50s were primarily the rich and supporters of Batista. Meanwhile, the poor, disenfranchised and Castro supporters remained. Today Cubans have the right to free education (including post graduate education), universal free healthcare and a guaranteed job and are by and large grateful to Fidel for establishing such birthrights.

2 During the 9 day mourning period, an official ban was placed on alcohol, music and dancing. This meant the once harmonious streets were silent and beer, mojitos and wine were conspicuously absent from meal times. That being said… if you wanted to find a drink, you could. Here’s my food & drink recommendations for Havana.

3 When Fidel transferred power over to his brother Raoul in 2008, Raoul opened up the economy slightly by allowing people to hold 2 jobs and permitting the privatization of homes for hotel rooms and restaurants. Private homes for rent are called casa particulares in Cuba and typically are slightly better kept than the government run hotels. For $30-40 a night (you can book on AirBnB in advance or show up and ask around) you’ll get a small, clean room and Cuban breakfast (fresh fruit, coffee, ham) in the mornings. Private restaurants are called paladars and typically offer better service than their government counterparts. If you prefer a hotel, here are my best Havana hotel recommendations.

4 During the 9 day mourning period, Fidel Castro’s ashes went on a country wide procession from Havana to his final resting place in Santiago. When we stopped in Cienfuegos, we noticed a long square wrapping line of students waiting for the procession and in Santiago, many students went to the town square to sign the memorial book.

5 Raoul Castro is 85 years old. Transfer of power is not expected to pass on to his son or relative and locals thought there might be a vacuum while the country waited for a new dynamic leader. Cuba of course, is a one party state.

CURRENCY AND MONEY

11 I’m sure many people know that Cuba has two currencies (I briefly explained the two in this earlier post, How to Travel to Cuba as an American). I thought the CUC would be pronounced “see-you-see” as in the letters, but it’s actually pronounced “kooks” with a hard c, sounded out. It’s roughly 25 pesos nacional (local currency) to 1 CUC (tourist currency).

12 The average Cuban makes 12 CUCs a month (roughly 12 euros, or 12 American dollars due to the 10% tax on American currency). While this is extremely low for our standard of living, you have to keep in mind that Cubans receive a guaranteed job, free education including post secondary education, free rent and free healthcare – so their expenses are quite minimal.

(Because Cuba offers universal healthcare, its required of travelers to have their own health insurance before arrival. They used to check at the airport and port entry points although they did not seem to check for me when I went. If you want to get travel insurance with trip cancellation / gear protection/ medial coverage, I recommend World Nomads)

21 Things Only Girls Who Stress About EVERYTHING Understand

$

The concept of taking a chill pill might be a joke, but at this rate, you’d be thrilled for it to be real so you could take a full prescription. Life is a series of ups and downs, but lately, you’ve had trouble keeping balance and would “very much like to be excluded from this narrative.” Here are some signs that you’re seriously stressed TF out.

1. Hearing “It’s not a big deal” annoys the living crap out of you.

You obviously wouldn’t be stressing this bad if it were a small deal!

2. Your body is sending you some serious danger signals that you keep ignoring.

It’s normal to rotate between fevers, stomach problems and headaches on a weekly basis, right?

3. You can’t remember the last time you slept through the night.

There aren’t enough glasses of wine in the world to get you to knock out peacefully.

4. And the idea of “rest” seems like a foreign concept.

This “relax” that you speak of…how do you go about doing it?

5. You joke about people taking you out of your misery but are actually 100 percent serious.

SEND HELP, A BOX OF CHEEZ-ITS AND SWEATPANTS THAT ARE ACTUALLY CLEAN ENOUGH TO WEAR.

6. Drinking has become a hobby instead of a social activity.

Not sure which is more soothing. Making cocktails or drinking them…

7. You change moods more often than you change outfits.

Today’s look is agitation with a few layers of anxiety, just to add some extra flair.

8. In fact, it doesn’t take much to set you off anymore.

It’s like 24/7 PMS with no relief. The horror.

9. Honestly, the only thing that manages to calm you down anymore is TV.

Netflix and chill…the hell out before you go crazy.

10. Or maybe a good cry because you’ve been doing a lot of that lately.

But you’re as in denial about it as the Grinch was when he asked himself, “Why is my face…leaking?”

11. You have become a pro at emotional eating.

And that means binging on Chinese food and ice cream until your stomach screams, “Please, stop!”

12. Or you haven’t had much of an appetite lately.

You know it’s bad when you’ve gone weeks without pizza.

13. Your friends and family are constantly telling you that you need to slow down.

Chances of listening to them are as nonexistent as your romantic life.

14. You can’t stand when someone tells you to stop being a “control freak” or “perfectionist.”

This is about as effective as those teeth-whitening strips that you used to use.

15. Sometimes you just wish that you could stay in bed indefinitely.

You prefer comfy blankets to human contact.

16. Your sex drive has gone way, way down.

Your mind has too many things to worry about to make room for X-rated thoughts.

17. To-do lists have become a mandatory, painful part of your daily grind.

This is taking “I can’t even” to a whole new level.

18. You have trouble concentrating on the simplest tasks.

Sometimes people ask your name and you blank out for a minute.

19. Your eyes sometimes twitch so bad that people think you’re winking at them.

MUST STOP SENDING SEXY SIGNALS. YOU’RE TOO STRESSED FOR SEXY. NO.

20. Your face is breaking out worse than it ever has.

Welcome to planet acne! On your right, you’ll find a crater that popped in just in time for Monday morning!

21. You’ve considered getting a therapist to help you cope.

Because you know that your self-care is a priority, not an option!

What I've Learned as a Black Traveler

$

0

By Adeleke McMillan

2016 was one of the best years of my life. I was fortunate to travel to several different countries while studying in France for the year. As a black girl, traveling taught me a number of invaluable lessons on race.

1. More diversity in a country does not indicate less racism

It's easy to think that because the United States was founded on a nation of immigrants, Americans are much more tolerant than other countries. However, it’s important to remember that a country that isn’t very integrated is not necessarily more racist. Studying abroad in a small city in France that had a small amount of black inhabitants, I found the area to be much less prejudiced than my diverse American hometown.

2. Beauty is relative

As a Black girl living in a predominantly white country, it is easy to grow up thinking that I’m not as attractive as lighter, whiter girls. When I was younger, I was constantly bombarded with images of white women portraying love interests or models in mainstream media. Internalizing this way of thinking can easily result in thinking of one race as physically superior to others. However, traveling internationally has showed me that the idea that specific races are more attractive than others is so inconsistent from country to country, that it can’t be true. In some countries I was considered more beautiful than in others. As a result, I learned to stop relying on outside sources to believe in my own beauty.

3. Be wary when talking to older relatives about traveling

The world’s attitude towards blacks today is generally much more progressive than decades ago when our older relatives were traveling. Therefore, their view on travel is bound to be very different from the younger generation. Some of my relatives had problems with me staying with a white host family and visiting homogeneous towns when doing that 50 years ago could’ve resulted in violence. Their stories are important from a historical standpoint, but when you’re trying to plan a trip, you might want to consider talking to younger girls about their experiences.

4. Traveling is a priceless experience

I know from personal experience that not everyone has the means or time to travel. However, if you are fortunate enough to able to choose between a $500 phone and a $500 plane ticket, I would strongly advise choosing the latter. Among all things, travel has taught me empathy, independence and confidence. The fact of the matter is that black people just aren’t traveling. Yes, it is true that some of us can’t afford it, but for the rest of us, I want to encourage you all to get out there and explore the world. Not only will it change your perspective on the humanity, it just might change your life as well.

6 Things Everyone is Insecure About When it Comes to Sex

$

There are some aspects of hooking up that make everyone feel insecure, regardless of your level of experience. While these insecurities tend to lessen the longer you’re with someone, if you’re having sex with a partner for the first time, it’s totally normal to feel self-conscious. Pretty much everyone is insecure about these six things when it comes to sex, and here’s what you can do about it.

1. Will my partner still find me attractive when I’m naked?

Feeling uncomfortable with the way you look is a common insecurity that women experience when they’re having sex. According to a national survey, 52 percent of women have “avoided or postponed sex, even when they were in the mood, because they were too self-conscious about their looks.” No matter how happy you are in your own skin, when that’s all you’re wearing, self-conscious thoughts have a way of creeping up on you.

"I worry about hair down there," says Ingrid, a junior at Auburn University. "Does he think it’s gross if I let it grow out? I honestly think it looks better without being shaved—razor bumps are not cute to me! But society acts like we should all be perfectly shaved creatures all of the time." Try not to let those insecurities ruin your experience. Feeling awkward about your body can cause you to overthink things, which means you aren’t totally focused on what’s happening. Do your best to let it go and enjoy yourself, and your partner will too. Focus on foreplay to get you in the mood, play sexy music or adjust the lighting to a more comfortable level. There are a number of strategies for having more satisfying sex, so don’t be afraid to experiment in order to find what works best for you.

2. What if I’m less (or more) experienced than my partner?

Not everyone has the same level of sexual experience, and that can be a big worry when it comes to hooking up. If you’re less experienced than your partner, you may feel inadequate in bed. If you’re more experienced, maybe you feel like you’re being judged.

“I’m definitely most insecure when it comes to skill level, of all things,” says Gabby*, a junior at Gettysburg College. “My boyfriend’s older, so he’s got more experience and I put way too much thought into not looking too naïve.” This is definitely a valid concern! If your thoughts are elsewhere, though, how can you focus on the matter at hand? Try talking to your partner beforehand about how experienced you both are. This might help ease your anxieties. If so, go for it! Just understand that he or she wants to be with you, and your level of experience shouldn’t affect that fact.

3. Is he or she having a good time?

As caring women, we are constantly worrying about other people. Unfortunately, this even extends to sex. Rather than focusing on ourselves (which would be totally okay, by the way), we want to make sure our partners are having fun. It’s fine to keep this in mind, but concern about how you’re performing shouldn’t take over.

For Katie, a junior at SUNY Oswego, making sure that she is “good” at sex makes her feel insecure. “My partner has expressed similar insecurities about sex to me,” she says. “To overcome them, we just talk to each other. Because we are so comfortable around one another and trust each other, it is easy to express our concerns and insecurities.”

If your partner is having a good time, you’ll probably be able to tell. And if the first time you have sex with that person isn’t completely spectacular, don’t be upset. That is totally normal, and it just means you’ll have to keep practicing (wink, wink). Consider asking your partner after sex if there’s anything you can do better next time. Feel free to let them know what you liked and didn’t like on their end as well. Open communication about what went well—and what could be improved upon—will ensure that everyone is having a good time.

4. Did my partner notice that weird noise?

Awkward moments are almost unavoidable while hooking up. If you notice a funny sound or a position doesn’t work out quite the way it should, don’t panic.

For Tiara, a junior at Central Washington University, sound during sex makes her feel insecure. “I think people get too caught up in trying to be sexy and in control to acknowledge the inevitable sounds of two bodies smacking together,” she says. “In my experience it makes both parties far more comfortable to laugh at the situation and move on rather than act embarrassed and uncomfortable.” Her advice is spot on. Laugh it off and keep going—don’t dwell on something as small as a weird noise.

5. Am I taking too long to finish?

Because women often take longer to orgasm than men, we don’t always get to. Insecurities about finishing are definitely real, but just because you might need more time, that doesn’t mean your partner should forget about you! Try to stay in the moment and let your thoughts come and go. As we all know, it’s much easier to orgasm when you’re not thinking about it.

If your male partner comes before you, he should still make sure you reach orgasm. Encourage him to use his hands or mouth if you’re still feeling turned on after he’s done. Ideally, he’ll do so without being asked.

6. What do I do now?

Tiara, like many collegiettes, also experiences insecurities about what to do after sex. “Sometimes if it’s the first time you hooked up or a random hook up, it’s difficult to tell what the other person wants you to do regardless of if you’re at their place or yours—cuddle, talk, order pizza, etc.,” she says. “It says more about the hook-up culture, but depending on the situation I never know if I should throw on my clothes and leave or stay over and expect coffee in the morning.”

It may feel awkward, but it’s okay to ask! Saying something as simple as, “What do you want to do now?” can help ease any tension in the air. If you’re not into it, you don’t have to feel pressured to stay. Ideally you’d cuddle, talk and order pizza, but obviously that doesn’t always happen.

Insecurities during sex are totally normal, but that doesn’t mean they’re fun. Try to let self-conscious thoughts go, or talk to your partner about what you’re feeling. Most of the time, they have no idea what’s going through your head, and vice versa. Chances are, you’re both feeling insecure! Don’t let insecurities while hooking up stop you from enjoying yourself. Just remember, we’ve all been there.

In 2016, Kylie Jenner proved to the world that she was more than just the youngest sister of the clan when she started Kylie Cosmetics, her own makeup company. Since the star released her now-famous lip kits, fans have fought to get their hands on the matte liquid lipstick and matching lip pencil duo, hoping that, with the right contouring tricks, they’ll be able to replicate Kylie’s famous pout.

Kylie, however, has proved that her makeup line has done more than just provide the world with bigger lips to show off on Instagram. Kylie Cosmetics partner with Smile Train, a charity that works to provide surgeries for children born with clef palate, free of charge. She released a lip kit appropriately named “Smile,” a gorgeous light pink, and announced that all profits from the sale of the product would go to Smile Train.

When the product was first released in the fall of 2016, it raised $159,000 for the charity, which equates to the funding of 638 surgeries for those in need. Since her latest restock of the product on January 5, People reports that the lip kit has raised nearly half a million dollars.

Smile is currently out of stock on Kylie Cosmetics, however, Kylie has been notorious for giving the fans what they want. So if you’re interested in not only getting a flattering, limited edition lip kit, but giving back, make your request known to Kylie! You know where to find her.

This Is How the Spice Girls Got Their Nicknames

For those wondering why Mel B is “Scary” Spice or how the other Spice Girls got their nicknames, it seems they can be traced back to a lazy journalist who couldn’t be bothered to remember the ladies' actual names.

Mel B revealed the secret behind the girl group's nicknames during an appearance on Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show Tuesday night.

“We had this one journalist who I guess was extremely lazy, and couldn’t bother to learn all of our names and just gave us nicknames. ‘That one’s a bit Scary, that one’s a bit Posh’…and they just kind of stuck,” Mel B said. “He couldn’t be bothered.”

The Spice Girls, otherwise known as Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Mel C and, of course, Mel B, ended up embracing the monikers. “It kind of just worked,” she told Colbert. “I like mine, because at least I’m scaring people before I even walk in the room.”

Now if only we could get the five of them to reunite…for real.

Trump Picked Rick Perry for Energy Secretary Even Though Perry Once Said He'd Abolish the Department

President-Elect Donald Trump isn’t even sworn into office yet, but he’s already stirring up some heated discussion because of his…interestingadministration picks. The latest debate involves former Texas governor Rick Perry, who accepted Trump’s offer of Energy Secretary thinking that it would entail promoting American oil and gas, The New York Timesreports.

Not quite, Perry—the White House’s official site describes the Department of Energy as “advancing the national, economic and energy security of the United States.” As if the situation couldn’t get more awkward, The Washington Post writes that, while running for president in 2012, Perry believed that the Energy Department should be abolished. He even forgot the name of the department during a 2011 debate. Um, what?!

Although the position isn’t officially his, Perry still voiced regret that he said the department wasn’t needed. Before beginning his Jan. 19 confirmation hearing with the Senate Committee on Energy and National Resources, he announced, “My past statements made over five years ago about abolishing the Department of Energy do not reflect my current thinking. In fact, after being briefed on so many of the vital functions of the Department of Energy, I regret recommending its elimination.”

The Department of Energy is definitely crucial to the country’s upkeep, providing protection from nuclear threats and raising money for energy efficiency among other duties. According to the New York Times, Perry doesn’t have nearly as much experience with these specifications as current Secretary and former MIT physics department chairman Ernest J. Moniz, but he did oversee a plan to run a nuclear waste repository while serving as governor. While defending his past statement, Perry even separated himself from Trump’s beliefs by admitting that “some of” climate change results from “man-made activity.”

Perry has a lot of concerns to ease during his hearing, including his relationship with fossil fuel organizations and his invested stocks in Energy Transfer Partners, which is trying to build the Dakota Access Pipeline, USA Today reports. If he’s confirmed as Energy Secretary, one of his main jobs will be to handle the Iran nuclear deal, which the White House believes would prevent Iran from reaching nuclear weapons. Although Perry seems to be cleaning up his act to take on the position, his past views—and his inexperience—still make him a questionable pick.

4 Self-Defense & Safety Tips All College Girls Should Know

As much as we all don’t want to think about it, college campuses aren’t always the safest places. Whether you’re at your home campus or studying abroad, it helps to have some safety tips.

It can be scary living on a college campus, but there are a lot of great resources out there to help you. Following these tips can make you feel safer and more confident.

1. Take a self-defense class

Taking a self-defense class can be one of the most beneficial ways to learn how to protect yourself. Maci Nordone, a sophomore who took a college-sponsored self-defense class, says, “It felt empowering to know some self-defense tactics so I could start to feel more confident about defending myself if necessary.”

Tsahi Shemesh, the chief Krav Maga instructor at International Krav Maga New York, teaches self-defense classes and encourages all participants to “know how to fight back by yourself and [not to] wait for anyone else to save you.”

Shemesh says in a typical class, the instructor chooses one scenario to break down. He explains that if you practice how to react in real-life situations, you’ll feel calm and confident instead of freezing up if such a situation ever arises.

A directory of different self-defense classes can be found using the R.A.D. Systems Database. All of the classes are taught by certified teachers who cover various self-defense methods and techniques for handling real-life situations.

2. Download the OnWatchOnCampus app

The OnWatchOnCampus app is a White-House-approved smartphone app that makes reaching your emergency contacts and the police much easier in threatening situations. With the app open, it only takes two taps to call the police and your nearby friends. You can also set a timer for any time when you’re worried about your safety, such as if you’re walking home late at night. When the timer goes off, you’ll be prompted to enter a code. If you don’t respond to the prompt, the app will automatically call the authorities and share your location. Although the service requires a paid subscription ($0.99 per month), the app is free to download and comes with a free 30-day trial.

3. Walk in a group

Your kindergarten teacher was right about this: The buddy system works! Whether you’re going to a party, leaving a club meeting at night or walking home from the library after dark, it’s useful to have a buddy.

When going to a party, pick a friend to check in with every once in a while. Make sure that she’s safe and ask her to do the same for you. Then, at the end of the party, leave together and text each other when you’re both home safe. Being responsible for someone else and having her be responsible for you will keep you both safe throughout the night. That’s what friends are for!

4. Take out your earphones

Although it’s great to jam to some Beyoncé after a long day at school, it’s better to listen to what’s happening around you. By taking out your earphones and listening to your surroundings, your brain will be able to focus on any safety hazards.

Shemesh warns against holding your phone in your hand or listening to music while walking alone. “Don’t trust objects to save you…[and] be aware of your surroundings,” he says.

Pay attention to any people following you, loud noises, traffic or potentially uncomfortable situations such as intoxicated and angry people nearby. When you’re attuned to what’s going on around you, you can take a simple action such as crossing the street to the empty side of the sidewalk in order to save you a lot of trouble.

Don’t be afraid to be on your own! Instead, take control of your safety. Although these suggestions are just a few of the activities you can do to keep safe, they are a great place to start. To get more tips on campus safety and self-defense, contact your local or campus police force to ask for information.

Health Secretary Pick Tom Price Is Avoiding Any Questions About Birth Control & Women's Reproductive Rights

No one can say this is very surprising—Rep. Tom Price, President-Elect Donald Trump’s pick for Secretary of Health and Human Services, totally avoided giving any direct answers to questions about women’s health rights during his Jan. 18 hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, Cosmopolitanreports.

Price was put on the spot when Democratic Sen. Patty Murray brought up a controversial statement he made back in 2012 about women’s access to birth control. According to The Atlantic, Price was then against the law that covers birth control without a copay. When asked specifically about low-income women's ability to access birth control, Price replied, “Bring me one woman who has been left behind…There’s not one. The fact of the matter is this is a trampling on religious freedom and religious liberty in this country.”

But in a survey from the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, half of uninsured women said they didn't use a more effective form of birth control due to cost. The stat definitely makes Price's previous statements look unconvincing, and Sen. Murray was determined to find out if his beliefs had changed in any meaningful way.

“Women are really deeply concerned about the impact that the election will have in them getting access to health care they need,” she said at the hearing. “Will you commit to ensuring all 18 FDA-approved methods of contraception continue to be covered so women don’t have to go back and pay extra costs for birth control?”

Having received sucha specific question, you’d think Price would be more specific with answering—but that wasn’t really the case. “What I will commit to and assure is women and all Americans need to know we believe strongly every single American should have access to the kind of coverage and care they desire and want," he answered. "That runs across the board.”

While the intention behind that claim is nice, Teen Voguereports that Price is also anti-abortion and has membership in a doctors' group that “supports non-evidence based science.” He also voted against D.C.‘s Reproductive Health Non Discrimination Act, which says that women can't be discriminated against at work because of their reproductive decisions. While Price claims he voted out of concern for “who’s paying for" the reproductive health products, the vote alone is enough to be a major concern.

In the uncertain climate developing for women’s reproductive rights, this definitely isn’t the best news, but we have fierce women like Sen. Murray—who told Price she was “very concerned that your vision for a health care system is very different than the one I think millions of Americans are counting on”—to speak up for what's right.

Nina Dobrev Can't Discuss a Return to 'The Vampire Diaries,' Which Probably Means She's Coming Back

Fans of The Vampire Diaries are still waiting to find out whether the series' original star, Nina Dobrev, will be returning before its end. The actress very recently refused to confirm or deny rumors that she would make at least one more appearance on the show, leaving diehard TVD lovers in a frenzy.

Dobrev told The Huffington Post that she is “not allowed” to talk about a possible return, fuelling speculation that she will, in fact, reprise her role as Elena.

Speculation began when the show’s executive producer, Julie Plec, suggested“a promise was made” by Dobrev to return to the series. “She and I have spoken and I know that she 100 percent wants to be there,” Plec said. “I, of course, 100 percent want her to be there, and so it just comes down to stupid things like scheduling.”

But for now, Dobrev seems to be enjoying the tease. “I haven’t ever told secrets in the past and I’m definitely not going to start now,” she told The Huffington Post.

Her denial sounds more like a confession to me, as it seems unlikely she would be keeping a “secret” if she wasn't returning for TVD's final season.
