11 Ingenious Ways to Add Vaseline to Your Beauty Routine

0
0

While beauty oils are all the rage, nothing beats a tub of good old Vaseline ($4.27 at Walmart and available in any drugstore) when it comes to beating dryness. This miracle product—also known as petroleum jelly—works wonders on your skin, hair, nails and body, and it costs less than a grande Starbucks latte! Check out these 11 amazing ways to add Vaseline to your beauty routine, and soon all your friends will be asking about your miracle beauty product!

1. Prevent fake-tanning mishaps

Rub some Vaseline on your cuticles, elbows and knees just before fake tanning at home with a gel or mousse to avoid patchiness and uneven color seeping into the cracks in your skin. Continue moisturizing these areas after tanning to extend the life of your at-home color!

2. Soften your cuticles

Rub some petroleum jelly on your cuticles before painting your nails. This will soften the skin around your nails so you don’t have to worry about dry skin ruining your perfect mani. Plus, it will make it easier to push back your cuticles, revealing more of your natural nail while still protecting your nail beds.

3. Get the most out of your perfume

Dab some Vaseline on your wrists and neck before applying perfume to those areas. The petroleum jelly absorbs the scent better than your skin, and giving the fragrance a base to cling to will make the perfume last longer and stay fresh for hours.

4. Grow longer lashes

Dip a Q-tip in your pot of Vaseline and rub your fingers over it to remove any excess. Running the Q-tip along the base of your eyelashes, gently apply the Vaseline to the roots of your lashes every night before bed for longer, stronger lashes.

5. Tame unruly hair

Whether you’re trying to rock a sleek side part or your gym ponytail is looking a little cray, rub the tiniest amount of petroleum jelly between your fingers and pat down baby hairs, flyways and frizz before heading out the door. Just remember to use this trick as a final step after using heat-styling tools!

6. Lock in moisture

If you have super-dry skin, apply a small amount of Vaseline to moisturize your elbows, knees, hands and any other dry areas.

7. Remove makeup

Petroleum jelly can easily break down hard-to-remove makeup, so beauty guru Michelle Phan recommends using a dime-sized amount of Vaseline on a cotton pad to remove stubborn waterproof eye makeup. Simply close your eyes and gently massage the product into your eyelids and along the base of your lashes to loosen up tough makeup. Don’t forget to follow up with your normal facial cleansing routine to remove any residue from the makeup or Vaseline!

8. Exfoliate your lips

In a small bowl or even on the back of your hand, combine a dime-sized amount of Vaseline with a pea-sized pinch of granulated sugar until you’re left with a uniform mixture. Gently massage the exfoliant into your lips for about a minute, making sure to move in small, gentle circles. When you’re done, pat off the excess product with a face towel. Since exfoliants get rid of dead and dry skin, you will be left with soft, smooth lips, perfect for recreating Kylie Jenner’s famous pout!

9. Highlight your cheekbones

Take a pea-sized amount of Vaseline and rub it between your index fingers. Dab at the product along the tops of your cheekbones and smooth out with your finger for a quick and easy highlight that works on every skin tone. The key to not looking oily is to use only the tiniest amount of product and to keep it concentrated on your cheekbones. You can use this trick on no-makeup days to add a healthy glow or use it as a final step in your makeup routine for a flirty highlight.

10. Smoother feet

Place a walnut-sized dollop of Vaseline in your hands and apply it liberally to your feet before bed. Sleep in socks overnight for super-soft and nourished feet in the morning.

11. Protect your skin from hair dyes

If you color your hair at home, apply a thin layer of Vaseline to your hairline, the nape of your neck and around your ears before you start to create a barrier and prevent skin discoloration from the dye.

What are you waiting for, collegiettes? Start incorporating this miracle product into your beauty routine now and you’ll be amazed at how something as simple as petroleum jelly can become a multitasking miracle product!

22 Things That Happen on Every Season of 'The Bachelor'

0
0

Lured in with promise of new drama, romance and adventure, we've been tuning into The Bachelor (and, let's be real, every spin-off show the franchise releases) season after season. Viewers from across “Bachelor nation” are eagerly watching as dozens of women compete for Nick Viall's affection in yet another season of what is dubbed as “the most dramatic season of The Bachelor yet.” Veteran Bachelor viewers know that while no two Bachelors or Bachelorettes are alike, there are definitely overlapping themes and mannerisms that make The Bachelor everyone's favorite guilty (or not so guilty) reality TV pleasure.

1. You draft your favorites like it’s fantasy football — only more intense

You pick out your favorites from the very beginning and feel a sigh of relief whenever they get picked to go to the next round, but if they don’t get a rose, you’re screaming at your TV like…

2. You go on social media and intensely follow everyone’s live commentary

Twitter on Monday nights: pure gold.

3. There is always that one girl takes complete advantage of the open champagne bar

After 20 seasons of the Bachelor, you would assume that girls would catch on to the fact that the open bar is indeed a trap. Producers want you to get belligerently intoxicated so you’ll create drama for the show.

4. Someone gets insecure and bashes all of the other girls

But what else would you expect when, like, 30 girls are competing for the affection of one guy?

5. One or more of the contestants has a trivial title to compensate for the fact that they are indeed, unemployed

Dog-lover, free spirit, and twin are apparently occupations now.

6. That one girl really tries to push her luck on day one

Whether it be showing up in a wedding dress, or really vying for that first kiss — there is sure to be one contestant who does the most to make a first impression.

7. Someone is not there for the right reasons

“For the right reasons” will forever be engraved in the minds of all Bachelor fans.

8. Past Bachelors make cameo appearances — and naturally, you fan-girl out

How could you not fan-girl when you see Sean Lowe?

9. The date goes well and he says “I could really see myself falling for her”

Her, and all the other women in the house, right?

10. When everyone hates someone in the house but the Bachelor can’t see it

And you’re screaming at your TV wondering how he can’t see that this girl is actually insane.

11. You get emotionally attached to certain girls — and question the Bachelor’s credibility if he sends her home

Face it — you’re left more heartbroken than the Bachelor is.

12. One of the girls makes the super classy exit, making even the Bachelor wonder if he made the wrong choice

A class act goes a long way — potential Bachelorette maybe?

13. That one girl who makes the not-so-classy exit, and the sigh of relief when she’s finally gone

And if you’re lucky, it’s the same girl as #10

14. The cutthroat awkwardness that is a 2-on-1 date

But you secretly love it, especially when there is a show “hero” and “villain” who are on the date.

15. Their elaborate dates gives you an unrealistic expectation of what dating is really like

Flying into the Met on a Helicopter, renting out Castles and jumping from buildings — relationship goals?

16. You question whether or not you want to join next season just for the ultimate travel experience

Thailand, Curacao, Antigua, Bali, The Bachelor leaves no corner of the world untouched. We can't help but to want to sign up for the adventure, too.

17. Hometown dates roll around and all you can think of is how judgmental each of their families are going to be

Whether its a batty older brother or an overprotective parent, someone in the family is sure to stir up some drama. Have your popcorn ready?

18. Chris Harrison brings around the fantasy suite card, and things get really awkward, really fast

The controversial “fantasy suite” leaves the cameras behind, leaving the “fantasy” to the viewer's imagination.

19. The Neil Lane diamond ring comes out, and you hyperventilate about how big and beautiful it is

ABC pays for the big hunk of rock, but in reality, the Neil Lane rings featured on the show retail somewhere between $20,000 - $75,000.

20. The girl who was hiding until about halfway through the season “wins” the whole thing

While you’re too busy worried about the front-runners and drama queens, the “girl next door” will inevitably walk away with the engagement ring.

21. Every season is dubbed “the most dramatic season yet” by Chris Harrison

Every. Single. Season.

22. You can’t wait for the “After The Final Rose” or “Women Tell All”

The Bachelor finally confronts all his exes and a Bachelorette is “surprise” announced — reality television heaven.

I Tried Dating Myself & Here's What Happened

0
0

No matter how independent we become, or how self-made we think we are, as women there is always this small part of us that hopes Prince or Princess Charming will ride around on a white horse ready to sweep us off of our feet. You’ve tried talking to the cutie in your chemistry class, meeting new people at parties, and even Tinder, all ending in the same result—flop. At some point or another we have all looked at ourselves, even for a brief moment, and said “I am pretty great, what don’t they see in me?” Quickly and quietly, we begin to break ourselves down and point out all of our own flaws in order to find the reason: not pretty enough, smart enough, rich enough, heaven forbid we don’t put out right away. We know it's bogus, but it's still there, and the majority of us feel insecure and vulnerable when we have to face the facts.

A question I posed to myself not too long ago was this: Why am I even looking for love right now in the first place? I am young, ambitious and goal-oriented, and most of the girls I see getting married (let alone into relationships) are setting aside their own dreams to make way for his. As a single feminist that seems absurd and I believe the majority of women in their right mind would agree, yet we still flock back to thoughts of the same five romantic comedies in hopes that our very own Ryan Reynolds is around the corner.

After long contemplation in regard to the question stated above, I realized the reason I was looking for love was to find some sort of stability in my ever changing world. Only to realize shortly after, that not only is that a high expectation to place on another person, it's also something that can be achieved on my own. Therefore, like any hardworking person would do, I set a goal. I was going to try something that when stated out loud sounded slightly ridiculous, but to me, felt like the next best thing. I was going to try to date myself.

The first time I took myself out was to a movie. Let me just tell you, sitting in the theater of the movie that you want to see, and being able to laugh and cry at all the parts you want, with no filter, is quite refreshing. I have never been one to care about what other people think of me, but it wasn’t until I was by myself in pure authenticity that I began to understand my own likes and dislikes on a deeper level. On a separate night, and now on several occasions, I have taken myself to dinner. It is not always the most comfortable thing to ask for a table for one, but there is power in knowing you can handle things on your own, even if they are as simple as going out to eat.

One of the things about dating in general, is that you sort of take care of each other; when dating yourself you do the same thing. It's not about blowing a ton of money with a ‘treat yo' self’ mindset, but more so loving yourself by taking care of the things you can control. Learning to love your body might bring you to exercise more often or eat healthier, but loving yourself can also be understanding your limits, and when it's time to put down the study guide and say goodnight. Just like dating another person helps you get to know their quirks and habits, you also begin to break down walls. Dating yourself teaches you what you need to know about your own thoughts and tendencies.

After three or so months of reminding myself to breathe, and take time out of my busy schedule to take care of my mental health (with anything from going to the gym to going to the mall) and exploring the things that I enjoy, I discovered that dating yourself is a journey without a destination. Yes, purposefully taking yourself to brunch at your favorite coffee shop may eventually bring you to find your preferred order, but as new experiences occur you will grow and change. Therefore this is as much about falling in love with yourself as a person, as well as the process. People come and go, but you have yourself forever, and stability is not something you can fully depend on someone else for. You need to be able to love and be happy with yourself first before you can ever truly be happy with someone else.

7 Things You’re Not Doing to Get Your Dream Internship

0
0

Just imagine it: learning from top professionals, getting to make a difference in your field and maybe even living in a new city. Scoring your dream internship would be so cool, and with a big picture that glamorous, it’s easy to overlook the details of actually getting the internship in the first place.

Whether you’re not assertive enough, proactive enough or informed enough, you may overlook important steps when applying for internships. Sure, we know you’re the perfect candidate for the job, but recruiters don’t—yet. And making these mistakes can keep your potential employers from ever finding out just how fabulous you are!

1. You don’t reach out to your connections

It’s easy to type “Engineering internship + Boston” into the Google search bar and hope you find gold, but you’re unlikely to get your dream internship with a simple search alone.

You’ve got plenty of other options. Many collegiettes find opportunities onfantastic internship websites that make it super easy to find the perfect internship by listing top positions in one place.

Often, though, college students get so wrapped up in their internet searches that they forget their closest resources: the people around them.

Vicki Salemi, career expert and author of Big Career in the Big City, says that collegiettes shouldn’t neglect the people they’re already connected to during their internship searches. Sometimes the people you know— such as professors, former employers or even family and friends—will know of a position that you’d never find on your own.

“When searching for internships, [students] should tap into their networks,” Salemi says.  “Sometimes just searching online will end up with little to no results depending on timing. [For example], in bigger companies there are deadlines to be met, and if you miss it for the summer, you're out of luck.”

Joan Snyder Kuhl, author and founder of the speaking and consulting company Why Millennials Matter, also recommends contacting an HR employee or alumni at the company you’re interested in through LinkedIn.

LinkedIn can be an excellent resource for networking with your university’s alumni and others within specific companies. If you have your own LinkedIn profile already, an easy way to find alumni at a specific company is to search your university in the LinkedIn search bar. Once you’re on your university’s page, click on the Students & Alumni tab. Then you can search a company or organization within that section to find alumni who work there.

Although you may not be able to contact alumni directly through LinkedIn (unless you connect with them!), you may be able to use the information you find on their pages to look them up on Google. Some professionals provide their contact info on their own websites.

However, if you have a dream company in mind that isn’t offering an internship, sometimes it’s worth a shot to contact that company directly.

2. You don’t open your mind to different positions

You’re dead-set on public relations. You just know you’re going to be an epic PR guru someday. So why would you ever take a journalism internship?

For one, keeping your options open to multiple types of internships will help you cast a wider net. More applications mean that you’ll probably hear back from more places. You don’t want to have your heart set on only two or three perfect internships and then end up not hearing back at all.

Keeping an open mind can also help you figure out what kind of jobs are good fits for you. Internships are great opportunities to experiment, and your dream internship might end up being something you never expected!

“Definitely open your mind to different positions,” Salemi says. “Part of the fun about internships involves career exploration. Let's say you take an internship in marketing and absolutely hate it! Well, then you can literally cross marketing off your list of potential job paths.”

In your internship, you won’t just learn about what you want to do—you’ll also learn about the environment you’d like to work in.

“This is your opportunity to try on a company for size to see what fits,” Salemi says. “Even if you have your heart set on a large, global corporation, why not try a boutique firm to see how you like the vibe?”

You may realize that you actually adore your small company’s culture, or maybe you’ll realize it’s not for you. Either way, you’ll have a better idea of what you want after graduation by expanding your options.

3. Your company research only skims the surface

Just about anyone can spend 30 minutes scanning an organization’s website. If you really want to stand out, you need to understand the company, its products and services, its clients and its culture.

An outstanding candidate will be able to use this research to tailor her resume, cover letter and interviews to a company’s specific needs and values. Effective research can also let you know what kind of culture and environment you’ll be walking into if you get the internship.

“Research sometimes falls short in the area of companies in the news,” Salemi says. “Yes, you're looking for a stellar internship to gain skills, experiences and valuable connections, but what if the company recently went through a downsizing situation? What if they're being acquired?”

In other words, you need to know more than that the company is cool and that this internship would look stunning on your resume. What kinds of customers does the company serve? What are its top products? If it’s in the news, what big issues is it facing? You can even check stock prices and business performance. Form opinions about the company’s strengths and weaknesses, and get a feel for where you will fit in once you land your internship.

If you do this, you’ll be better able to address the company’s needs, something that will definitely set you apart from other applicants.

4.  You don’t tailor your resume to each application

Salemi says that many students make the mistake of assuming that recruiters will always read their resumes. “When I worked in recruiting, it wasn't uncommon to literally see hundreds—if not thousands—of resumes sitting in the applicant tracking system,” Salemi says.

That means that if you want to get hired, you need to get your resume past screening software. These applicant tracking systems (ATS) help recruiters more efficiently select candidates by scanning resumes for relevant keywords.

A great way to get past these systems is to carefully read your internship description and mold your resume to include relevant keywords, or exact words and phrases that appear in the internship description in your resume. For example, if your internship requires “oral communication skills,” you should put those words on your resume rather than “public speaking experience.”

No matter how fantastic your experience it is, it won’t mean a thing to your potential employer unless he or she gets the chance to read it.

“There's not enough time in the day to read each and every [resume],” Salemi says. “And they're all similar after a while, so you need to make your resume tailored to the position you're pursuing and definitely try to wiggle your way in the door through any connection you have to actually get noticed.”

5. You don’t address the company’s needs in your cover letter

Maybe you’ve got hundreds of volunteer hours, killer work experience and top-notch academics. Even if you could write a novel-length cover letter detailing how perfect you are for your ideal internship, that doesn’t mean you should.

Many students go on and on about their successes and desires and end up with absolute disasters of cover letters. The worst part? Sometimes these lengthy essays don’t really address the company’s needs.

“Cover letters should be succinct and really pop as to why you're filling the company's need,” Salemi says. “They shouldn't be incredibly long; let your resume do the talking. Instead, just let the cover letter shine by being brief and addressing why you can immediately solve their problem.”

Pick no more than three or four qualifications listed in the internship’s description that you think the company particularly stresses, then provide a specific, concise example of how you meet those qualifications.

Like your resume, your cover letter should be tailored to each company. Research your company thoroughly and find its core values. What kind of culture do they have? Try to reflect this in your cover letter and save all your other great qualities for the interview.

6. You don’t do a mock interview

If you’ve got an interview lined up, that’s an accomplishment on its own. But it’s also the most nerve-wracking (and often trickiest) part of the application process.

“Students struggle with confidently articulating how their experiences translate into the work responsibilities of the role they are interviewing for,” Kuhl says. “This requires research about that company, its work, the demands in similar roles and, most importantly, a lot of practicing their own responses.”

A mock interview can help you gain the confidence you’ll need by getting you used to talking about yourself, your skills and the company you want to intern for. You can ask a friend or family member to ask you questions, or you can go over questions on your own in the mirror or in your computer’s webcam. Your university’s career center may even offer mock interviews during the school year.

Practicing for an interview might feel silly, especially if you’re just interviewing yourself in a mirror, but it’s extremely important. If you don’t have another person to interview you, look up common interview questions online and write out answers to help you get a feel for how your experience is relevant to your desired job.

7. You don’t follow up after the interview

“When it comes to following up, just do it!” Salemi says. “Many students miss this key step. First, definitely send a thank-you email or snail-mail note within the first 48 hours. But then also follow up within a week to two weeks to inquire about the status and next steps.”

Following up after your interview leaves a good impression in your interviewer’s mind. Plus, it shows your potential employer that you are serious about the position.

But following up isn’t just for after interviews. After you send out your initial application, it’s a good idea to follow up with questions or comments after a week or two, as long as you do so in a professional, considerate manner. This kind of follow-up can be as simple as briefly restating your interest in the position, giving a sentence or two about your qualifications and asking about the status of your application.

Applying for internships can be stressful and, yes, even overwhelming. But if you take your time and put the effort into each one of your applications, something good is sure to turn up. And remember, even an internship you hadn’t originally considered could become the internship of your dreams!

7 Things You Need to Know About Law School Before Committing

0
0

Law school is not for the faint of heart. Law school is a soul-sucking, but rewarding experience. It is not easy and it’s rarely fun, but if you’re determined enough to power through and earn a degree, you already know this and don’t scare easily. If you’re considering one of the most rigorous career paths in the country, you’re likely preparing to study a lot. Before submitting that application, take a deep breath and add a few things to your ever-growing pro/con list.

1. Law school is not undergrad round two

There are no party buses, easy breezy assignments or make-up exams. There’s no way to prepare for an Elle Woods-esque transformation. You just have to trust yourself and prepare as much as possible. Leave any notion of prancing down memory lane behind. The only thing you might have in common with your younger self is an abnormally large amount of caffeine pumping through your veins.

2. A J.D. isn’t a guarantee

Your fancy new law degree doesn’t change the job market. Job-hunting is hard in today’s climate, even for the bright young brains of the world. With plenty of planning, you’ll know where to go to get the job of your dreams. Your years of hair pulling will only prove your passion and dedication behind the degree. They have nothing to do with available positions. Nancy,* a current law school student, says that research is the most important factor. She says, “Most importantly, think about what type of law you think you want to do, what type of firm or government position you want.” Then, research whether or not the law schools you're applying to are a good fit for those types of jobs. As you navigate law school, keep networking and reaching out for job placements. Like any other industry, it’s all about who you know.

3. HTGAWM makes all-nighters look cute

Yes, coffee and co-working happen. A lot. But designer outfits, real-life murder and perfectly coiffed hair with sleep deprivation? Not so much. Nobody will be around to document your hard work and intense study sessions. Cutesy coffee dates are long gone. Studying in law school is more like voluntary solitary confinement. You’ll have a finite amount of hours until you need to fully comprehend decades worth of material. Time management will never be more vital.

4. Be wary when dishing free legal advice

When you do manage to get out of the library and into the real world with the other humans, everyone will want to pick your brain for free. Regardless of the niche you’re studying, people will expect you to know everything about the law and answer their desperate questions in return for a smile. Explaining various procedures is one thing. Sitting down for a one-on-one in-depth consultation is another. And doling out advice when you don’t know the answer is an entirely different issue. Be courteous, help your contacts where you can, and always include the fine print up front.

5. Self-care is more important than graduation

If you find yourself struggling with the immense stress of law school, how can you expect to practice law afterward? This intense time of growth and learning is also about creating a productive and balanced life. From here on out, you will face tough days, cases, and clients. As Nancy says, “It's tougher than what you see. Maybe not the actual workload, but the emotional toll it takes on you.” It doesn’t get easier, but it does lend itself to a routine. Figuring out how your mental and physical health plays into your daily race is integral to you walking across that graduation stage.

6. Alcoholism is real

Need a drink? The answer, while you’re in law school, is almost always yes. The precarious combination of high-stakes work, crushing student debt, and social isolation can leave you drained. Nancy says, “Sometimes schools or groups organize ‘bar reviews’ which is a play on words for just meeting up at a bar, which is a great way to meet people. You don't actually have to drink, though!” The easy and readily available solution for many lawyers-in-training is alcohol. Though commiserating with your community is understandable, Nancy’s right. You don’t have to drink to fit in. Choosing a pricey depressant may not be the best answer to your woes. Instead, try the old standbys of sleep, hydration, meditation, and healthy eating. Taking care of your body first will help naturally fight the impending stress.

7. Being a know-it-all won’t help you

No matter how well you know the material (or think you know), save it for the exams. You’re smart. You got yourself here. Don’t blow it by letting your ego say stupid things. Speaking up simply to show off puts a target on your back for both professors and peers to give you a hard time.

Committing to the cost of law school, both mentally and financially, is a heavy decision. However, committing to shaping the world into a better, more just place is the easy motivator. If you’re up for a challenge that never ends, grab your pink scrunchies and open those textbooks. It’s study time.

Kim Kardashian Recounts the Terrifying Details of Her Robbery in Paris Police Report

We always knew Kim Kardashian’s robbery was a nightmare, but the harrowing details revealed by French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche have elevated the incident to a terrifying level. The newspaper leaked excerpts from the police report Kardashian submitted after her Paris Fashion Week robbery.

According to a translation by People, Kardashian was on her laptop in her hotel room when she heard footsteps outside the door.

"I shouted, asking, 'Who’s there?'" Kim reportedly said. "No one answered. I called my bodyguard at 2:56 a.m. Through the door, I saw two people arrive, plus the night man who was tied up." The security guard was coerced to let the robbers, who were dressed as police officers, into Kim’s room.

One of the men, who wore ski goggles, demanded to know where Kim kept her $4 million ring—a present from her husband, Kanye West, that she’d previously displayed on Instagram. At first, Kim refused to comply, but when the man pulled out a gun, she had no choice but to give him the ring.

"They grabbed me and took me into the hallway. I was wearing a bathrobe, naked underneath. Then we went in the room again, and they pushed me on the bed. And, it was this time, they tied me up with plastic cables and taped my hands, then they put tape over my mouth and my legs," she continued.

Absolutely horrifying. In total, the robbers stole about $5 million of Kim’s possessions and left her unharmed but traumatized. Thankfully, Kim has started to speak out about her experiences—a sign that, hopefully, she is back to herself.

A Connecticut Republican Was Charged With 4th Degree Sexual Assault For Groping A Coworker

Christopher von Keyserling, a 71-year-old Connecticut Republican who has served on the Greenwich Representative Town Meeting board since 1985, has been charged with fourth-degree sexual assault for an incident in which he pinched a female coworker’s crotch back in December. According to Jezebel, he was arrested this past Wednesday for the crime, which took place on Dec. 8, according to the Greenwich Daily Voice.

The woman, who is 57, crossed paths with von Keyserling in the hallway, where they struck up a conversation about politics. After she referred to today's poltical situation as "a new world," hiis alleged response was, "I love this new world, I no longer have to be politically correct."

According to the Greenwich Daily Voice, here's what happened next: She said that if he was "proud of that I can't help you." His response was to call her a lazy, bloodsucking union employee. She told him “Fuck you,” and walked into her office, where he followed her under the guise of wanting to talk to one of her coworkers. When that coworker arrived, she told von Keyserling that she didn’t have time to talk to him and walked back out. The victim went to follow, as she didn’t want to be left alone with him, and he allegedly reached out and pinched her groin. The warrant says that she threatened to punch him if he ever did that again, and he told her “it would be your word against mine, and nobody would believe you.”

The victim originally did not want to file a criminal complaint against von Keyserling, as she was afraid of possible retribution and the publicity an investigation could bring, but after learning that von Keyserling had allegedly acted in a similar manner against other employees at town hall, she changed her mind, hoping to prevent something happening to other women in the future. Von Keyserling was ordered not to return to the facility where the incident had occurred until further notice and to have no contact with the victim, which he said he understood but that he was sorry he pinched her and that the situation had gotten out of hand. He then told individuals at town hall that the incident was a joke and, during a meeting between the two, he told her that he couldn’t believe that she could be offended.

Connecticut News 12 reports that von Keyserling’s attorney, Phil Russell, calls the allegations against von Keyserling outrageous. "Von Keyserling playfully gave a lady who he knew for 30 years a pinch is what the accusation is," Russell says. "And somehow, everybody's wringing their hands and carrying on that this is a crime, and it just isn't."

First of all, physical retaliation at the end of an argument isn’t "playful," it’s vindictive and totally inappropriate. Second of all, grabbing anyone by the crotch unless they’ve expressly said something along the lines of, “Hey, it’s totally cool if you grab my crotch,” is sexual assault, no matter how you try to spin it. And third, security cameras captured the exchange and corroborated the victim’s version of the incident. In a world where perpetrators of sexual assault often face few repercussions (looking at you, Brock Turner) it seems as though this one may have a more positive outcome.

Von Keyserling was released on a $2,500 bond, and it's currently unknown whether his position will be affected. Just last week, another board member named Christopher Sandys, 46, resigned from his post after he was arrested on charges child pornography possession charges, according to Connecticut News 12. Not a good week for the Greenwich Representative Town Meeting.

Chase McNary Signed a Contract to Be the Bachelor, But Then Nick Viall Happened

It turns out Luke Pell wasn't the only one who was hijacked of his Bachelor dream when Nick Viall signed on for this season. If you follow The Bachelorette, you know that Chase McNary was the second runner-up on JoJo Fletcher’s season last year. Unfortunately, just like Luke, Chase was fooled into thinking he was set to be the franchise's next lead.

"I went through the negotiations, I accepted the offer, I signed the contract," McNary reveals to Us Weekly. "I talked to my family, friends, about being the Bachelor. It was the Monday before they announced it that they told me I wasn't the Bachelor. So I found out with the rest of the world that it was Nick."

Nick was a surprising choice, as Chase hadn’t even considered him to be in the running for the role prior to the announcement. In fact, he’d thought Luke would snag the coveted role.

"Inherently, I thought it was going to be Luke," McNary continues. "When I found out I wasn’t the Bachelor, I thought it was going to be Luke. I think Luke thought it was going to be me. And we both at the same time found out it was going to be Nick."

We can’t help but feel bad for Chase, but Nick is pretty cute. We’ll just have to see where this season of The Bachelortakes us.

Here’s What You Need To Know About That Dossier On Trump And Russia

0
0

As Inauguration Day approaches, headlines about a “dossier” on Donald Trump and his possible connections to Russia have rocked top news outlets. The allegations—ranging from a Russian conspiracy to weaken the U.S. to video evidence of Trump sleeping with Russian sex workers—have yet to be confirmed.

Even so, Americans are questioning how much of the dossier is true, and what this means for the president-elect. To answer that, HC broke down exactly what the dossier contains, who wrote it and how bad the implications could be.

So What Exactly Is The Dossier?

To put it simply, the dossier is a collection of unsigned memos, compiled between June and December 2016, detailing Trump’s alleged dealings with the Kremlin state.

Released in full by BuzzFeed, the 35-page document contains 17 company intelligence reports that were likely a collection of edited third-party reports.

Who Put It Together?

According to The New York Times, Fusion GPS, a Washington political research firm, was paid by an anti-Trump Republican donor in September 2015 to do “opposition research” on him. When it was clear that Trump would be the Republican nominee, wealthy Democratic clients continued funding this research.

Fusion GPS decided to delve deeper into Trump’s involvement in Russia in June, after sources claimed Russian hackers infiltrated the Democratic National Convention. The firm reportedly hired a retired British spy, Christopher Steele, to look into Trump’s ties to the state.

Steele seemed like the perfect man for the job. Many considered the former MI6 operative a real life James Bond, 007.

John Sipher, a retired CIA specialist in Russia and counterintelligence, told the Wall Street Journal that Steele had an excellent reputation in the intelligence world and was stationed in Russia for years. His past work included gathering information on the murder of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko and the corruption inquiry of FIFA.

Steele spent months compiling memos of Trump’s possible connections to Russia.

How Much Of It Is True?

To be honest, no one really knows yet.

Trump, in typical Trump style, tweeted several times denying the veracity of any part of the dossier.

At a press conference last Wednesday, Trump added that the dossier was “fake news,” “phony stuff” and “crap.”

The report is not an intelligence report, plain and simple,” said Sean Spicer, a Trump spokesperson, at a news conference last week. “[It’s] flat-out false.”

Russian officials have also dismissed the dossier as entirely false.

The main point every single news outlet has stressed is that the dossier is unsubstantiated. None of the claims have been confirmed, and it would take months of investigations by U.S. intelligence to do so.

That is why it took so long for the American public to even hear about the dossier. It had been a sort of legend to Washington journalists, elected officials and intelligence agents for weeks, circulating but never being reported on. David Corn made the first mention of the dossier in October for Mother Jones, but it was mostly a speculative article.

Most media outlets refuse to publish the entire document, since the claims have not and cannot, as of right now, be verified. Still, the dossier is comprised of sophisticated memos from a seemingly credible source, making it worthwhile for the media to summarize and report.

Although the allegations aren’t substantiated, they are serious enough for top U.S. officials to investigate them. The U.S. intelligence community briefed both president-elect Donald Trump and President Barack Obama, along with top congressional leaders, of the dossier’s claims, and deemed them credible enough for further investigation, CNN reports. Sen. John McCain also allegedly sent his staff to London to obtain a copy of the dossier to provide to the FBI.

Sir Andrew Wood, the UK’s former ambassador to Russia, told the BBC that Steele was a “very competent, professional operator.”

“I do not think he would make things up,” said Wood. “I do not think he would necessarily always draw correct judgments—but that is not the same thing at all.”

In fact, after Steele’s name was released by the Wall Street Journal as the author of the dossier, he left his home and went into hiding. That is “not something you need to do if it is not real intelligence with real sources,” wrote CNN Opinion writer Nick Dowling.

There are some inconsistencies and mistakes in the dossier, though. There are misspellings throughout the memos, such as the Russian financial investment firm Alfa Group being spelled as “Alpha Group.” The report also says the settlement of Barvikha is reserved only for top leadership and their associates. However, Barvikha is not reserved, and, according to BuzzFeed, is populated by very wealthy Russians.

Because of the possibility that many third-party agents authored the memos, this should not immediately invalidate some or all of the claims.

What Are Some of the Allegations?

The dossier claims that Putin and the Russian government have been “cultivating, supporting and assisting Trump for at least five years” in order to “encourage splits and divisions in western alliance.” Throughout that process, Russia reportedly fed intelligence to Trump, especially concerning his political rivals. This may explain why Russia became involved in the WikiLeaks scandal and hacked the DNC.

Russia also allegedly compiled compromising intelligence against both Trump and Hillary Clinton. The dossier against Clinton includes bugged conversations she has had on her visits to Russia over the years. The potential blackmail against Trump, though, is much more perverted.

One memo in the dossier claims that in 2013, Trump booked the presidential suite of the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Moscow. During his stay, he employed “a number of prostitutes to perform ‘golden showers’ (urination) show in front of him.” The hotel was under FSB surveillance, spotted with concealed microphones and cameras to catch Trump’s “golden showers” on tape.

Could Donald Trump Be Impeached?

Of course, with incriminating materials like a possible tape of a “golden shower party with prostitutes” and evidence of a Putin-Trump conspiracy, Trump could be impeached. As of now, though, that outcome isn’t likely.

According to the Guardian, the effect of the Russia dossier scandal will only go as far as people want it to. Congress, for example, could elect a special committee, similar to the Watergate panel, to investigate the Russian hacking or dossier. Both John McCain and Lindsay Graham, Republicans who are skeptical of Trump, have shown support for such a committee. Congress could also subpoena witnesses who may, under court order, reveal parts of the truth of the dossier.

However, a congressional committee or subpoena order would require the backing of a Republican-controlled Congress. After such a close election, the GOP may not exactly jump at the chance to oust their own party’s president.

The intelligence agencies, such as the FBI and the CIA, are already reportedly investigating the dossier’s claims. Trump takes charge of these organizations on Jan. 20, meaning further investigations may not go much further. However, Trump’s ties to the FBI are not the strongest, so they aren’t exactly on his side.

Even if the dossier’s claims prove true, impeachment involves a majority vote of the House of Representatives and a two-thirds majority vote in the Senate. The president-elect would need to seriously have issues with members of his own party, which has majority control over the U.S. Congress, for them to decide to dump Trump.

BuzzFeed News published the entire dossier here, to let the American people decipher the truth for themselves.

This 7-Year-Old's Impersonation of Taylor Swift is Absolutely Perfect

Imitation is the highest form of flattery, and it becomes 100 percent cuter when a little kid is involved. Seven-year-old Xia Vigor, a British and Filipina actress, has won over everyone’s hearts after impersonating Taylor Swift in a musical performance on a Philippine TV show—and it’s the most adorable thing ever.

According to Refinery29, Vigor appeared on Your Face Sounds Familiar Kids, a singing competition where kids copy their musical inspirations when performing. When Vigor hit the stage singing “You Belong With Me,” it was clear that a new favorite of the contest had been crowned.

Not only is that outfit completely on point with Swift's old country style, but Vigor also has some of her performance tricks down to a T, like the classic ripping off one outfit to reveal a sparkly one (as we all do, right?). Based on the audience's response, Vigor couldn't have been any closer to giving a true Taylor Swift performance. It even looks like Vigor's competition loved her act, bopping their heads as Vigor rocked out.

This isn't Vigor's first try at imitating famous singers—The Huffington Post reports that she won a "Mini Me" competition at the age of five after performing as Selena Gomez. Um, seriously?!

All that's left to finalize Vigor's superstar status is a visit or shout-out from T. Swift herself, which we're sure will happen sometime soon.

There's a Good Chance That 'Grey's Anatomy' Will Never End

I’m sure we’ve all joked about Grey’s Anatomy lasting forever, especially because today’s TV shows are lucky if they get picked up for a second season, let alone reach their 13th, like our beloved Grey’s. But now there’s a legit possibility that Grey’s will be airing new episodes FOREVER.

According to Entertainment Weekly, ABC Chief Channing Dungey revealed to reporters that the network’s hope is for Grey’s to return for much more than just an all-but-confirmed Season 14. “Honestly, I think that the show is going to continue as long as [creator] Shonda [Rhimes] and the gang have a creative passion for telling those stories,” Dungey said at the Television Critics Association’s press tour. “At the moment, it feels like we’re full steam ahead.”

Excuse me while I go cry in gratitude.

Given the show’s ability to draw in 11.6 million viewers weekly (still!), it’s no surprise that ABC loves the idea of the show running as long as possible. Dungey even proved that she’s a true fan when she explained that the show gains fresh energy every time new characters or relationships are developed, using Meredith and Alex’s bond as an example. “That’s just what the writers do so well; they continually peek back new layers of these characters that we get to expand and explore,” she shared.

The rest of our TV favorites may be in constant jeopardy, but knowing that Grey’s Anatomy is basically always safe is truthfully all we need.

7 Perfect Office-Ready Pieces for Curvy Girls

Shopping for what to wear for your job or internship can be a struggle. Shopping for work clothes when you’re not a size zero? Even more challenging. You want to look professional and office appropriate, but you also want to show off your sense of style in clothes made to flatter your curves. The key is to create a career wardrobe that mixes both classic essentials, like the perfect blazer and pencil skirts, with on-trend pieces, all in silhouettes that flatter your body. The best part? We’ve done all the searching for you. Keep scrolling to see the seven essentials you need to chic-ify your workday wardrobe.

1. A work-appropriate LBD

Work-Appropriate LBD

The most versatile career piece you can have in your closet? The little black dress, but a version that’s more work-appropriate than your favorite LBD for a night out. It works for any season and can be styled in tons of ways—it’s the perfect go-to piece for those “I have nothing to wear!” days. Hurley says it’s also the perfect piece for curvy girls looking for a more streamlined silhouette, especially through the midsection.

“For areas that you want to look smaller, darker colors are good,” Hurley says. “I like to suggest to my clients that, especially if they carry more weight in their stomach area, they have a more monochromatic look through the stomach.”

The trick to making the piece work for the office is to look for longer lengths and a more covered-up silhouette at the top. We love this sheath dress from Eloquii, which has a flattering hourglass shape but has angular cutouts up top to add a cool-girl touch. Another great silhouette for curvy shapes is the fit-and-flare LBD, like this ponté knit dress from Jessica London, which will highlight your hourglass shape. Style with leg-lengthening black pumps and a black bag to go for the all-black look, or add printed, colorful accessories, like leopard pumps and a red bag, for a vibrant touch!

2. A well-tailored blazer

Well-Tailored Blazer

Like the LBD, the basic blazer is a work-wear staple that will never go out of style. Hurley says curvy collegiettes should add one to their wardrobes because of its versatility and flattering “V” shape.

“A blazer is one of the best things to make sure you have in your wardrobe because they go with everything,” Hurley says. “You can take a blazer and put it over a sleeveless top to make it appropriate for work.”

While we love a more oversize shape for off-duty looks, for the office, invest in a shape that has a more tailored waist and ends at the widest part of your hips, which looks more dressed up for the office. To flatter a curvy shape, Hurley recommends investing in a quality blazer to make sure it is tailored and structured enough to fit your curves correctly.

“The more structure it has, especially in terms of having seams along the waistline, the more it will create the look of a waist and be flattering,” Hurley says.

It’s all in the details: Tailored seams at the waist and pockets that slant slightly downward on this tailored jacket from Lane Bryant create the illusion of a narrower figure and emphasizes an hourglass shape. For the spring and summer months, it’s also great to have a white blazer on hand; we like this pretty quilted one. Want to really make a statement with your office wear? Try a fun color or pattern, like a floral blazer, which can brighten up a monochrome ensemble!

3. A perfectly cut pencil skirt

Perfectly-Cut Pencil Skirts

Not a big fan of the pantsuit? A pencil skirt is a great way to look polished and professional without being boring! For work, it’s totally worth it to invest in a basic go-to pencil skirt in a quality fabric. Hurley says the key is to look for crisp fabrics that aren’t as stretchy or form-fitting as the pencil skirts you might wear for a night out, and to pay particular attention to the length.

“The most common mistake that curvy girls make is wearing their clothes too tight,” Hurley says. “Pencil skirts are great; the general best length is around the middle of the knee, or just above the knee at most.”

We like the side-zip detail on this skirt from Lane Bryant, which gives it a fashion-forward touch that still looks appropriate for the office. Also look for a wrap shape, like this leopard print wrap skirt, which are not only super on-trend but also flatter curvy shapes. Color-blocking details near the hem of the skirt in a bright color such as pink can also have the effect of balancing out curvy hips and streamlining your silhouette.

4. A pretty patterned dress

For days when you want to add a pop of color into your office look, look no further than the patterned dress! It’s a great way to make a statement in a sea of blacks and grays, and it’s easy to throw on when you don’t feel like coming up with an outfit for the day.

“A patterned dress can be fun and young, and V-necks in particular are flattering,” Hurley says. “Then, make a solid-color blazer be the piece that will create the ‘V’ that will be flattering to curvy shapes.”

The fashion-forward print and pop of blue on this printed sheath dress is chic and statement-making, but the three-quarter-length sleeves and longer length make it great for work. The mixed prints of this Eloquii dress create a defined waist. Add black tights, a cute blazer and your favorite high-heel ankle booties to your printed dress pick. You’ll be the most stylish girl at the office!

5. Go-to pants

Go-To Pants

Pants for the office doesn’t have to mean a boring, gray pantsuit! A great alternative? Straight-leg tailored pants that go with every top in your closet. Basic black is great to have on hand, but Hurley also suggests wearing lighter-colored pants with lighter tops to balance your silhouette.

“A lot of stores will sell darker-colored pants, and if you put a lighter top next to that dark-colored pant, you can end up creating an ice-cream-cone shape, when what you’re trying to do is look as much like a hourglass figure as possible,” Hurley says.

For basic black, we love the satin pockets on this tailored pant from ASOS, which add a stylish touch. For a lighter look, camel-colored pants are a great option. Want to go for a print to draw some attention to your legs? Try a pair of dogtooth-print trousers. Bonus: All of these pants match with your go-to blazer! Wear these pants with your favorite pair of pumps for a silhouette that will make your legs look killer.

6. A feminine blouse

A Feminine Blouse

For days when you want to add a girly touch to your office look, a floaty, feminine blouse is the perfect piece. Since it can easily be worn with a gray or black blazer and pencil skirt or pants, you can go all out with the pattern and colors. We like the look of a classic collared button-down shape, like this leaf-print blouse from Forever 21, layered under a chic jacket, which brings in the flowy look at the waist and keeps it from swallowing up your curvy shape. Other fun patterns to try? Snake print and polka dots are both cute and fun while still being conservative enough for the office.

7. A flared midi skirt

A Flared Mini Skirt

The midi skirt trend has been going strong for some time now, so why not incorporate it into your work wardrobe? The longer length makes it a great choice for the office, but the flared shape makes your waist look super tiny! Make a statement in a bright, fun hue like this green scuba midi skirt from Eloquii or in a spring-ready floral-print skirt. It looks super chic with ankle boots and a crisp white button-down to let the skirt stand out.

Above all, it’s important to wear what makes you feel comfortable at work. When you feel great, you’ll look great, which will give you the confidence to accomplish amazing things in your career.

People Don't Know How to Feel About the American Apparel Store Closures

For a long time it seemed like American Apparel would be a staple in the fashion and retail industry for decades to come, but their recent file for bankruptcy and an $88 million dollar buyout, plus $15 million more for inventory by Gildan Activewear Inc. has brought an end to American Apparel’s American dream. Not only has Gildan Activewear decided to close all American Apparel stores, Reuter’s reports that an American Apparel spokeswoman revealed that there have already been about 2,400 layoffs in Southern California alone. Some employees and loyal customers have even taken to Twitter to voice their concerns:

While many consumers were just happy to hear about the ‘going out of business’ sale:

We can only hope that the layoffs stop soon and former employees will find work again in the near future.

This Beauty Vlogger Dumpster Dives for Leftover Makeup & It's Actually Not a Trash Idea

0

Dumpster diving isn't exactly the most glamorous activity. Despite this, YouTuber Shelbi Orme has brought a lot of attention to one of the craziest trends ever—dumpster diving for makeup.

From giphy.com

While you may be thinking that nobody in their right mind would use somebody's old makeup from the literal garbage, it's actually not the worst idea. According to The Independent, Shelbi has collected over $2,000 worth of products in a single dive. That fact alone is enough to send me scavenging through my local Sephora's trash can!

Shelbi cites her interest in protecting the environment as one of the main reasons for her rescuing products out of dumpsters. By throwing out hardly used makeup, people are filling up our landfills much more quickly than necessary. When you think about how much waste is being created from such a prominent industry, it makes you want to at least #reuse, if you can't #recycle. So if saving $$ wasn't a good enough reason to do a dumpster dive, saving the environment surely is. After a little research, I actually started to find that dumpster diving—and not just for makeup—is actually a growing trend across the country. Environmentally-conscious people everywhere are saving everything from clothes to food from being wasted. It's not for everyone, but as a broke college girl myself, I have to wonder if I've been missing out my whole life!

Despite all the benefits, there are some precautions that need to be taken. It's a well-known fact that makeup can harbor harmful germs and bacteria, especially when shared between multiple people. That being said, Shelbi explains that she takes extra precautions when it comes to cleaning these used products, and even has videos on her channel on how to properly sanitize them. It's also a good idea to stay away from liquid formulas, such as lipstick or eyeliner, that are difficult to clean and could end up causing an infection.

People have been throwing some shade due to the unhygenic nature of dumpster diving, but Shelbi refuses to let that stop her. "You can watch what I do and decide if it is for you or not," the vlogger said in an interview with The Independent. Retweet, girl. I wouldn't let haters stop me from scoring super expensive makeup for free either!

If you want to try makeup diving yourself, check out one of Shelbi's "Tips and Tricks" videos so you can be prepared! Happy diving!

Donald Trump Claims His Obamacare Replacement Will Provide 'Insurance for Everybody'

0
0

President-Elect Donald Trump told reporters over the weekend that he will soon unveil the details of his plan to replace the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, during his presidency, according to The Washington Post.

Part of his plan is to apparently provide healthcare coverage for all eligible Americans. Donald Trump, socialist to end all socialists. Who knew?

Trump emphasized the stripping of protections for pharmaceutical companies and demands he will make of these companies to lower the costs of medications. Trump said that a result of this change will be the lowering of healthcare costs in general.

Throughout the interview, Trump wasn't forthcoming about the details of his healthcare reform plan. He avoided answering questions about how he plans to sell his plan to the Democrats in the House and Senate, as well as the particular operations of his plan and how exactly he intends to make improvements to the current government healthcare system.

In response to questioning of how his policies would affect the economy, Trump was his usual well-mannered, articulate self. “I don’t care. I want to do it right or not at all,” he said.

Trump’s ambitious plans to overhaul the healthcare system are slated to take effect during the first year of his presidency, while the Affordable Care Act took much longer than that to put into place.

According to CNN, Republican leaders in government are disagreeing about how best to proceed with their desired healthcare reform plans. "Some want to slow down the repeal effort until a replacement plan is unveiled," CNN reports. No kidding!

Meanwhile, a report by the Congressional Budget Office released Tuesday asserted that repealing parts of the Affordable Care Act while keeping the parts that people like (such as not discriminating based on preexisting conditions) could mean 18 million people losing their insurance, according to The New York Times. It would also mean that people's insurance premiums, or the amount they have to pay for insurance, could double. The report is disheartening, because repealing only part of Obamacare is exactly what Republicans, and Trump himself, have proposed doing.

If the lack of detail Trump is giving the press is at all indicative of the lack of detail in his actual plans, Trump will have to significantly reevaluate his timeline. Hey—maybe he won’t actually be able to implement anything! If only.

Monica Crowley Gave Up Her Trump Administration Role After Plagiarism Accusations

First Melania Trump, and now Trump’s pick for national security spokeswoman? The Trump team has encountered yet another plagiarism controversy—but this time, it's actually leading to consequences.

Monica Crowley, a conservative author and television personality, was set to be Trump’s senior director of strategic communications for the National Security Council. On Monday, she announced that she would no longer be accepting the job. According to The Washington Post, Crowley said in a statement that “after much reflection,” she “will not be taking a position in the incoming administration.” She did not address the plagiarism accusations, but continued to show her support for the President-elect, saying that she will "continue to enthusiastically support him and his agenda for American renewal."

Crowley has recently been accused of not only plagiarizing her book but also her Ph.D. dissertation—it's pretty self explanatory why this is absolutely unacceptable. CNN reported that the conservative author’s New York Times bestselling book, "What The (Bleep) Just Happened," contained more than 50 instances of plagiarism. In light of the allegations, the publisher, HarperCollins, stopped selling the book last week

Initially, the Trump transition team stood by Crowley. According to TIME, they said that "any attempt to discredit Monica is nothing more than a politically motivated attack that seeks to distract from the real issues facing this country."

And so the search for Trump’s national security spokeswoman will continue. Here's hoping the next candidate does not plagiarize.

The Wife of the Pulse Nightclub Shooter Has Been Arrested by the F.B.I.

0
0

Noor Salman, wife of Pulse Nightclub shooter Omar Mateen, was arrested Monday by the F.B.I. According to The New York Times, prosecutors had been considering charges against Salman for months, unconvinced by her insistence that she knew nothing about her husband’s plans to attack the Orlando, Fla. club on June 12. The shooting resulted in the deaths of 49 people, many of whom were people of color and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Salman was arrested on charges of obstructing the investigation, as well as aiding and abetting by providing material support to a terrorist. The charges were disclosed by Orlando Police Chief John W. Mina, who went on to say that, “Nothing can erase the pain we all feel about the senseless and brutal murders of 49 of our neighbors, friends, family members and loved ones. But today, there is some relief in knowing that someone will be held accountable for that horrific crime.” NBC News reported that Attorney General Loretta Lynch confirmed the arrest. "We said from the beginning we were going to look at every aspect of this case, every aspect of this shooter's life — to determine not just why did he take these actions, but who else knew about them, was anyone else involved, is there any other accountability that needs to be had here in this case,” Lynch said.

Officials first began questioning Salman after the Pulse shooting as they worked to find an explanation for Mateen’s actions. At the time, Salman confessed to accompanying her husband to Orlando when he first scouted out the nightclub and visited a Walmart to purchase ammunition. However, she claimed that she had no reason to suspect either action. After all, he frequently bought ammunition for his job as a security guard.

During those early interviews, Salman said that her husband had been beating her and that, while she knew he had been watching jihadist videos, she never had any reason to suspect that he had become radicalized, particularly after the F.B.I. released him from their terrorist watchlist. In speaking with The New York Times after the shooting, Salman maintained that she was nothing but shocked and appalled: “I was unaware of everything. I don’t condone what he has done. I am very sorry for what has happened. He has hurt a lot of people.”

Salman’s arrest shocked relatives, who maintained that she had nothing to do with her husband’s actions. For survivors and relatives of victims of the shooting, feelings were more complicated. However, Orlando Mayor, Buddy Dyer, pledged that “Our community continues to heal and we remain focused on taking care of the needs of their victims and their families.”

Way More Buses Have Requested Parking for the Women's March on Washington Than for Trump's Inauguration

0
0

Washington, D.C. will certainly be crowded on Jan. 20 and 21, thanks to Donald Trump’s inauguration and the Women’s March on Washington. But which event will draw more of a crowd? That remains to be seen.

BuzzFeed News reported that by Jan. 12, nearly three times as many charter bus parking permits had been issued for the Women’s March than for the inauguration: 1200 (or every available permit for RFK stadium, the city’s largest bus parking area) versus 393. In comparison, 900 permits had been issued for President Obama’s 2012 inauguration ceremony by the same point in time.

This seems to undercut the president-elect’s statements that turnout for his ceremony will be "unbelievable, perhaps record-setting" with “plenty of movie and entertainment stars." Additionally, numerous Democratic lawmakers have announced that they will be skipping the inauguration. For some, it was Trump’s indefensible rhetoric about, well, just about everything: "I thought long and hard about attending the Inauguration because I value our democracy and respect the office of the presidency, regardless of party. However, the disparaging remarks the President-elect has made about many groups, including women, Mexicans, and Muslims, are deeply contrary to my values. As a result, I will not be attending the Inauguration," California Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard said in a statement Sunday. For many others, his attack on Civil Rights icon and Georgia Representative John Lewis was the final straw, with several lawmakers tweeting that they would choose to stand with Lewis rather than Trump.

The Women’s March on Washington, on the other hand, seems only to be gaining steam. By Jan. 17, 204,000 people were listed as going to the event on Facebook, with another 254,000 “interested.” Smaller marches in solidarity were planned for all 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, England, Switzerland and Australia. According to their website, the Women’s March is a response to the toxic rhetoric of recent elections: “In the spirit of democracy and honoring the champions of human rights, dignity, and justice who have come before us, we join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore. The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women's rights are human rights. We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.”

As exciting as the potential for a turnout disparity is, Chris Geldart, director of the D.C. Department of Homeland Security, told NBC Washington that permits don’t necessarily imply attendance. “I can’t tell you which is going to be more or less people, or how many people from the 20th are going to stick around for the 21st to add to the numbers,” he said.

But the city is prepared for large turnouts to both events. City Councilman Charles Allen spoke to BuzzFeed News, saying that “While the demand for bus parking seems significantly less than for previous inaugurations, the District is well prepared and will be ready for all visitors and guests making their way here.” He went on to explain, “As the nation’s capitol, DC is no stranger to major events and we are ready to provide a safe experience for everyone and to protect their First Amendment rights in the process — including the large crowds expected for the Women’s March on Washington.”

For now, we can only wait to see what happens.
