Ryan Reynolds Credits Blake Lively with Keeping Him Sane

I might have panicked a little when Brangelina announced their split in 2016, but I think I officially have a new favorite celebrity power couple. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds completely won over everyone’s hearts in 2016, from sharing their first date story to making their first public appearance with their daughters at the unveiling of Reynolds’ Hollywood Walk of Fame star.

The adorable twosome are proving that there’s even more to love about them in 2017—Reynolds has spilled details about just how supportive Lively is of him, especially when he has dealt with anxiety and stress.

In a recent interview with Variety,Reynolds explained how his years-long struggle with anxiety was evident throughout production of his superhero hit Deadpool. The actor was totally dedicated to perfecting his character, to the point of him feeling restless. “I never, ever slept,” he told the magazine. “Or I was sleeping at a perfect right angle—just sitting straight, constantly working at the same time.”

When his anxiety peaked during promotion of the movie, Lively was Reynolds’ shoulder to lean on, even though she was busy filming The Shallows at the same time. “The expectations were eating me alive,” Reynolds said of the early reactions to his film. “Blake helped me through that. I'm lucky to have her around just to keep me sane.”

Of course, the feelings are mutual: let’s not forget Lively’s killer Instagram caption directed at her husband after his Walk of Fame star was revealed, saying, “Proud is a pitiful word to describe how I felt today.”

Could James and Ines Reynolds' parents *be* more in love? We think not.

Mariah Carey Had This to Say About Her Nightmarish New Year's Eve Performance

Let’s be honest—it wasn’t very surprising for the not-so-great 2016 to end with such a cringe-worthy performance from Mariah Carey on New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, but Mariah thinks quite differently. The pop singer has come forward with her thoughts on the disastrous performance and who’s to blame for it, reports Cosmopolitan.

Mariah talked with Entertainment Weeklyabout the nightmarish incident, pointing to production company Dick Clark Productions as the instigator of her bad performance. “All I can say is Dick Clark was an incredible person and I was lucky enough to work with him when I first started in the music business,” she revealed. “I’m of the opinion that Dick Clark would not have let an artist go through that and he would have been as mortified as I was in real time.”

Before Mariah spoke out about the incident, her team accused the production company of purposely ignoring the singer’s ongoing concern about her earpiece's functionality so they could “get Mariah drama.” Dick Clark Productions denied these claims, revealing that an investigation had proven that its own actions hadn’t affected Mariah’s difficulties. The special's co-host Jenny McCarthy even defended the company, saying, "For [Mariah] to defame them was so incredibly insulting for the group of people who work their balls off preparing and rehearsing for their musical guests."

Although it seems like everyone and their mother still has a bone to pick when it comes to this debacle, Mariah's not letting it affect her upcoming plans, which include a tour with Lionel Richie beginning in March and a new reality series on E!. “It’s not going to stop me from doing a live event in the future,” Mariah said. “But it will make me less trusting of using anyone outside of my own team.”

No matter whose fault this mess may have been, I think we can definitely take Mariah’s post-performance tweet to heart when it comes to facing our own less-than-perfect moments.

An Indian Minister Blames Western Culture For New Year's Eve 'Mass Molestation'

A New Year's Eve celebration in the Indian city of Bangalore took an ugly turn on Saturday, according to The Guardian.

What is being described as a "mass molestation" occured after thousands of people gathered in the streets of Bangalore to ring in the new year. Women were sexually assaulted and harrassed in the street as the crowd turned to chaos.

"I saw women being molested in the crowd and people trying to find places where they could hide themselves and not be attacked," a wittness told The Guardian

A police inspector said that there were 1,600 police officers in the area, but it wasn't enough to monitor all 60,000 people at the celebration, according to the Hindustan Times.

The worst part about this ordeal is that very few people in power are actually putting responsibility for this on the perpetrators. The Guardian reports that the home minister of Karnataka, the state where Bangalore is located, claimed that the reason that men on the street acted in the way they did was because of western culture.

"They tried to copy the westerners, not only in their mindset but even in their dressing," the minister told the news agency ANI. "So some disturbance, some girls are harrassed, these kinds of things do happen."

This blame game surrounding sexual assault and harassment is all too familiar. Rather than blaming the men involved for their crimes, women are being blamed for their 'western dress'.

Many Bangalore Mirror photojournalists were in the crowd that night, capturing the chaos that unfolded.

Following the attacks, #NotAllMen began trending on Twitter. The #NotAllMen hastag has been used in two different ways—some men are using it to suggest that "not all men" are to blame for the attacks. Another group of people are using the hashtag to point out the lack of responsiblity being taken by men surrounding the incident in India.

Rega Jha, Buzzfeed India's Editor-in-Chief wrote, "Ultimately, parents raising daughters can’t end sexual assault. They can only issue warnings and hope for the best from a world they don’t trust. Parents raising sons, on the other hand, hold all the power to change the world."

While it's not yet clear how Indian officals will handle the incident, the chaos that unfolded on NYE is a chilling reminder that women throughout the world are still fighting to have full control over their own bodies.

Almost 70 Percent of Americans Oppose Overturning Roe v. Wade

The results of a new survey released by the Pew Research Center shows that 69 percent of Americans say they’re opposed to overturning Roe v. Wade. That means the vast majority of Americans want the constitutional right to abortion to remain in place, despite what you might hear from Donald Trump or Mike Pence.

According to the survey, support for Roe v. Wadeis higher among Democrats (84 percent) than Republicans (53 percent). This gap has increased since the 2013 survey, the Huffington Post reports. The report didn’t find many differences across education levels or gender, with both a majority of men and women saying the court shouldn’t overturn the decision. Young adults are slightly more likely (73 percent) than older adults (64 percent) to say the decision should not be overturned.

A larger divide exists among religious beliefs. Among Protestants, nearly two-thirds say the Supreme Court should not overturn the decision (63 percent). White evangelical Protestants ae more divided, with 49 percent believing the case shouldn’t be overturned and 47 percent saying it should. In contrast, 89 percent of those who are religiously unaffiliated support the continuation of Roe v. Wade.

During an earlier interview with 60 Minutes, President-elect Donald Trump said abortion rights should be left up to the states. He also promised to appoint pro-life justices who would be more likely to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Vice President-elect Mike Pence shares similar views regarding abortion rights. During a town hall meeting this past summer, Pence said Roe v. Wade should be sent back to the “ash heap of history where it belongs.”

According to FiveThirtyEight, actually overturning Roe v. Wade would a very tall order for the Trump administration. The decision has remained in place for more than 40 years, which means there's a firm precedent established for legal abortion—and judges really don't like going against precedent. But even with a constitutional right to abortion on the books, states have still managed pass tons of laws that restrict women's abortion rights to the point where it's pretty much impossible to have one if you're not wealthy enough. Reproductive rights are very much under attack in the U.S., and as the new president and vice president take office, they should know that their views stand in sharp contrast with the general public’s. The message is clear: most Americans support upholding Roe v. Wade. Trump and Pence need to remember that if they're truly going to be an administration for all Americans.

7 Things to Expect Your First Month on Birth Control

$

So, you’ve started your first month of birth control pills ––what’s next? Unfortunately, many hormone-based birth control pills have some negative side effects that just seem to be unavoidable for even the strongest collegiette. But, you can rest assured knowing most go away after a few months.

If you’re looking for answers on what to expect that first month on birth control, look no further. We’ve consulted Dawn Stacey, PhD, LMHC, a birth control expert, to give us all the details on how to deal.

1. The side effects will be difficult

Birth control comes with a range of side effects. Therefore, it is probably obvious (but important to note) that your first month on the pill is not going to be easy. If you have a rough day during that first month where you really don’t feel well, keep in mind that your body is being filled with hormones outside its normal cycle.

According to Dr. Stacey, there isn't a one-size-fits all experience with birth control pill side effects. "The most commonly reported side effects when a woman first uses the pill are: bleeding irregularities/spotting, nausea and/or vomiting, headaches and breast tenderness," she says. "Less commonly reported sides affects are mood changes, bloating, and less sexual desire. For most women, side effects usually go away after three months of continued use."

Dr. Stacey says collegiettes should really try and stick through the first three months of a new pill, no matter how challenging. "If, after 3 months, side effects are still present, she should talk to her doctor about what she is experiencing and ask her doctor to switch her to a different brand (one that may be less likely to cause her specific side effects)," she says. "The different combination and dosage levels of estrogen to progestin are more likely to cause certain side effects." If you start a new pill, give that one three months, as well.

Always remember that the decision to be on the pill is totally up to you. If you truly can’t handle it or simply don’t like the way it makes you feel or act, don’t be afraid to get off of it. Consult with your doctor about other methods of contraception or other formulas of the pill.

2. You may feel extremely emotional

This one comes straight from the change in hormone levels and is pretty common the first month. Although, the only way for sure to know if it’s the birth control itself that’s responsible for your moodiness is to stop taking it altogether.

For Sarah Madaus, a freshman at Temple University, starting birth control caused her emotions to run wild. “PMS is normal but mine was extreme,” she says. “It’s leveled out a little bit since the first month, but is definitely more noticeable than others.”

Dr. Stacey reccommends that you closely monitor your mood changes once starting the pill. "A journal or log book can help with this," she says. "If this symptom gets worse (develops into depression) or does not go away after 3 months, a woman should discuss this with her doctor." An awareness of the hormonal changes happening in your body is crucial.

3. Nausea is common

If you are feeling overwhelmingly sick for a few consecutive days –– don’t fear! This is normal and there are ways to fight it.

Dr. Stacey recommends taking your pill before bed. "A good way to combat nausea is to take the pill before going to sleep," she says. "This way, most of the nausea will be gone by the morning. If you do vomit after taking a pill, it is important to check with a doctor or pharmacist about whether or not to take an additional one." You might not be on the pill that's best for you personally.

If nausea continues or is extreme, reschedule an appointment with your gynecologist and get switched ASAP.

4. You could spot (but you might not)

Irregular bleeding is an extremely common side effect of birth control pills, especially during those first few months. If you find a little bit of blood on a random day you take one of your pills, you most likely have nothing to worry about.

It's important to be informed about potential spotting before going on the pill. "There is really nothing that women can do to stop or prevent spotting of bleeding between periods," Dr. Stacey says. "The best thing is that she is educated before hand that this may be a potential side effect, so she is not caught off guard if this happens."

Keep in mind, though, that if bleeding is excessive or seems abnormal to you, you can always ease your mind by checking in with your doctor to make sure everything is okay. It will usually level off in a few months.

5. Your period doesn’t always come the first day of the sugar pill

When your first day of the sugar pill comes, especially if you are sexually active, you’re probably eager to get your period. However, if it doesn’t come right on that first day, don’t rush to the pharmacy for a pregnancy test (not yet, at least).

When you’re on the first month of the pill, your body is trying to adjust your normal cycle to the additional hormones entering your system. Accordingly, your period could come as early as the first day of the sugar pill or as late as one of the last days. Every woman is different, so don’t fear! Chances are, your period will come. Your body will settle into a patterned cycle by the third or fourth pack of birth control.

6. You’re not protected from pregnancy yet

This one is especially important for sexually active collegiettes: don’t stop using protection your first month on birth control because you could still get pregnant. Opting for back-up protection (shout out to condoms) is your best –– and safest –– bet.

According to Go Ask Alice!, during your first month, there is still a chance that you ovulated before starting the first pill, so there could still be an egg ready for fertilization. After your first month, the hormones in the active pills should prevent you from ovulating altogether.

7. There are several health benefits of starting the pill

While you are definitely going to experience some side effects on the pill, you can ease your mind by knowing you will also experience some health benefits. "There are many health benefits of the pill - ranging from reducing your chances of ovarian, endometrial, and colon cancer to regulating cycles, reducing unwanted hair growth and acne," Dr. Stacey says. She adds that the pill is a very safe birth control option, and no other prescription drug has been more studied or researched.

Birth control pills almost always come with inescapable side effects, collegiettes ––especially that first month. The only way to learn what you can tolerate is to try out several different options until you find a pill that works for you. It might be difficult at the time, but the end result is far worth it.

What To Do When Your Study Abroad Experience Goes Sour

$

By Renee Reeves

This is supposed to be fun, right? I asked myself this question repeatedly during my semester abroad in Taiwan. Between managing a shifting class schedule, navigating a college bureaucracy unprepared for foreign students and struggling through “English” coding labs where we used mostly Mandarin, studying abroad in Taiwan was leaving me exhausted and depressed. After a semester of struggling, I decided that another semester of study abroad would do me more harm than good, and I chose to return home to the US a semester ahead of schedule.

If you’re frustrated, unhappy, struggling academically or wondering what the hype was about in the first place, don’t panic. Salvaging a bad study abroad experience isn’t impossible. From first doubts to (possibly) arriving back on US soil, here are five steps to follow when you’re considering cutting your trip abroad short.

1. Name the problem

Every exchange student deals with culture shock. If that’s you, seek support! There are plenty of of resources out there. Maybe, though, you’re struggling with something bigger than culture shock. Perhaps there’s a family emergency back at home. Maybe you’re feeling misled about your host school, or your new city has new challenges or you’re thinking of switching majors and feeling trapped in your current one. Naming your problems in clear, neutral terms is the first step to improving your situation.

2. Seek solutions

Once you’ve established why you’re unhappy, seek out people who might have solutions. Talk to people in your host school’s global student services office. They’ll be happy to find you a new host family, locate a language tutor or work out transcript issues. If your school doesn’t have a office for international students, try talking to an advisor from your department, faculty, or even campus mental health services. Many professors and faculty have been abroad themselves and are happy to help.

Your problems might follow you back to the US, so make sure to communicate with your home university. If time zones or international phone fees complicate communication, ask to set up an after-hours appointments with advisement or faculty through a service like Skype.

3. Make the choice about whether to stay

This step is undeniably the hardest and longest. Remember to think long-term, no matter how miserable you are now. Ask yourself:

●      Am I in danger right now?

●      Which will negatively impact me more in the future, staying here or going home?

●      Will my scholarships or GPA be seriously impacted if I leave early?

●      How much will leaving early impact my bank account?

●      Will I be able to graduate as planned if I leave early?

●      Can I emotionally handle pushing through another semester?

How much any one of these questions matters depends on your situation. In my case, I felt misled about my host school, but also knew that staying would mean wasting a semester of my scholarship while not making any progress towards graduation.

4. Explain your choice

Even if your parents are supportive, they will likely be concerned and surprised if you choose to leave your exchange program. Explain why things didn’t work out as planned, why you feel it’s in your best interest to return home, and how you’ll deal with issues like scholarships. Talk with your home university next, then follow their protocol for leaving your host university. Find out if you need to notify the government of your host country that you’re not staying as long as initially planned. When everything’s finalized, a brief note on social media can save you the trouble of repeatedly answering the same questions from friends.

5. Make the best of your trip

For the remainder of your time abroad abroad seek positive, unique experiences. Sign up for a cooking class or a dance class, or ask a friend to take you to that local hole-in-the-wall. Take an extended layover on the way home and visit a new city for a few hours, or stay in town and transfer into an intensive language program for a few months. Make sure to add your study abroad experience to your resume—even if it’s short, it’s valuable.

Whatever you choose, remember that traveling lets you grow your comfort zone, take chances, and learn more about yourself and the world around you. Coming home early, for whatever reason, isn’t failure or defeat. It’s simply a different sort of learning experience.

6 Pros & Cons of Being Someone’s First Love

$

How perfect does it feel to be someone’s one and only? We’d bet our entire savings that life feels like a Disney movie right down to little magic birds singing at you. It’s called first love, baby, and it’s got you under its spell.

Maybe you are both virgins to dating, discovering what falling for someone is like for the first time. Maybe you’ve already been through a serious relationship before and are currently your partner’s first real girlfriend. You’re the old, wise, ~experienced~ one, while your partner is new to, well, everything. When one person is experienced and the other is not though, first love can with come with challenges. Here are the best and worst parts of this situation.

Pro: You’re under pressure––in a good way.

We bet that to this day you can remember your first childhood crush. Whether his name was Jacob and you put love notes in his pencil box or their name was Sam and you held hands during recess, the same goes for your first serious relationship. For the rest of your partner’s life, you are going to hold a weight in their heart that lasts. That’s a lot of pressure, right? Hell yeah it is, but let’s make it a good thing instead of something that sends you running to the hills screaming.

Laura Parker, a senior at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, shares how the memory of her first serious partner lingers with her––in a good way. “My last boyfriend was my first love––and first everything else, too,” she says. “Although he wasn't the first person I've dated, he was considered as my first actual serious one. We aren’t together anymore obviously, but when I’m 80 and haggard looking I’ll still be able to tell my grandchildren every detail about the first person I loved because it just matters.”

First love is a sticky sweet knot in your stomach. It’s common to interchange “first love” with the feeling of “true love” (because it probably feels the same at the moment, tbh). It’s powerful because you are experiencing it for the first time. Maybe you took your partner’s virginity or are the first one they’ve brought home to meet their family. Even if your partner isn’t your first, cherish moments like these. They’re more meaningful than you know.

Con: Your partner may handle the relationship differently than you.

Getting into the groove and routine of how to handle a relationship like a semi-functioning adult takes time, but it can be a rough process if your partner is completely new to the party. When you’re a seasoned dater, you’ve mastered the art of having chill. You’re pretty conditioned to how relationships work, and know you don’t need to be together every second of the day or freak out if your partner doesn’t text you back. Maybe your partner can’t quite grasp this yet, so it’s important to share with them what you’ve already learned.

Angie House is a counselor at Illinois State University and specializes in dating and relationships. She’s pretty much the life coach you’ve always wanted to have, but haven’t been #blessed enough to meet. Luckily for you, she shared some of her romantic wisdom with us. “Speaking from personal experience, my first love was immature and shallow compared to the love I have for my husband,” she says. “With your first love, there is an overwhelming set of emotions that you don't know how to deal with yet. The next time, and the time after that, and the time after that, you get ‘better’ at loving and being loved, and can develop those feelings more deeply and with better understanding.”

With first love, there’s a sense of immaturity, but that doesn’t mean the love won’t grow or be lasting. You need to grow and change together, especially in college. Every tough emotion and worry you and your partner have is valid (we all ride the romantic struggle bus), but as your life progresses, your sense of urgency is reshaped. AKA you get woke and develop chill. It’s literal relationship goals.

Related: 5 Signs Your Significant Other Really Loves You

Pro: You’ll be their first for so many special experiences.

Every little thing you do, down to eating a burrito, is magical and gets put on a pedestal. You brought them donuts in bed for breakfast? Wow, you are goddess. You are the first person they’ve ever brought home to meet their mom? That’s because there’s no one like you. We aren’t trying to be snarky, because it’s true. You are special to them, and being with someone who loves you harder than you’ve ever been loved is the most reaffirming, secure and blissful thing you can experience.

House again shares her personal experience with the pros and cons of first love. “I'd say that there really isn't another time you will have an experience like your ‘first love,’” she says. “However, you will grow to realize that the first isn't always the best. I dated a really sweet guy through high school. He was a great person and I loved him very much. We shared many ‘firsts’ with each other and much of that was the reason it took me a long time to get over him. Even now I look back on my time with him and I'm happy that we enjoyed each other.”

Whatever it is, they will forever hold dear that special moment between you and use it as a reference point of joy for the rest of their lives. Take all the personal growth you’ve experienced and evolve into your girlfriend megaform for the best relationship yet. After all, if you’re going to be remembered forever, shouldn’t you at least be thought of as Beyoncé incarnate?

Con: You can hurt them in a lasting way.

Do you remember how painful it was when your first boyfriend or girlfriend hurt you? They said something they shouldn’t have, left you feeling insecure and you cried for days saying you would never forgive them. Let’s face it––your first relationship left you a scorned, bitter woman with trust issues up the wazoo. (Or you’re lucky and haven’t experienced this yet, or your partner was literal a saint.) Even worse, can you remember the first time you were broken up with? Now imagine inflicting all the pain and suffering on someone else.

Myelle Lansat is a sex and relationships writer at Elite Daily and Jerk Magazine at Syracuse University. She understands just how sad your first serious partner can make you. “The one thing you can avoid by staying with your first love is the period of horror that almost everyone in the world who has lost their first love goes through,” she says. “They have cut off a limb and let it scar over. Now we all roll our eyes at the pain of someone experiencing that loss of a part of themselves for the first time.”

The second or third time around, your relationship not working out hurts a little less. Abandoning your dreams for a life with that person is painful AF. But as you do it more you get used to it. It’s not cynical, it’s just the truth. You become desensitized to loss, and it won’t feel like a mortal wound to have love end.

Related: 4 Ways Sex Changes the Longer You’re With Someone

Pro: You have a partner who deeply loves you.

Umm, hello! You’re in a relationship! Do you know how many single ladies in the world are jealous of you right now? Seriously, you have someone to bring to your awkward family gatherings, eat food with and cuddle while you binge-watch Gossip Girl for the third time. Plus, your partner is lowkey wrapped around your finger, and we’re sure you’ve never been loved like this before. Is this enough of a pro? Because we totally think so!

Real talk though, falling in love with someone who has only. loved. you. is the best thing ever.

Con: You probably won’t end up with them.

If you’re an experienced dater, you know the importance of breakups and growing from them. Dealing with heartbreak and binge-eating ice cream has helped shaped your love life and will eventually lead you to the end of your rainbow. You also know that you can love someone more than your first. You know the importance of being weathered, because it also makes you polished.

Laura Parker, senior from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, elaborates more on why first loves are likely to not work out. “The pros of dating someone who hasn't been with anyone else is that they have no other experience to compare,” she says. “But the biggest con (part of why he broke up with me) is that because they haven't had any other experience, they also may wonder what else may be out there or if there is someone better (especially when relationships get rocky).”

If you’ve had other relationships while you are your partner’s first, you have to come to terms with the fact that even though you’re ready to stay with this person, they might not be ready to stay with you. They haven’t had the chance yet to go through loss or emotionally and romantically challenge themselves like you have. Truly, everything is situational and you are by no means doomed. However, don’t shelter yourself from coming to terms with a disappointing possibility like this one.

The spell of first love is beautifully confusing, and no matter what happens, you’ll get your fairytale. True love means evolving into better people and lovers every day, and if your first love lets you do that, then it’s safe to say you’ve found your soulmate.

Colors

Brown Eyes

It’s a common mistake for those with brown eyes to wear browns or darker, natural colors. But venturing out of your comfort zone is a must for a one-of-a-kind, amazing look. “[Wearing colors, other than brown] allows the eye color to stand out,” says Margina Dennis, a makeup artist and educator who has done looks for celebrities including Lea Michele and Jane Lynch.

For some specific colors to try, makeup artist Ashlee Glazer suggests Smith & Cult’s Book of Eyes Eye Quad in Interlewd. This palette offers colors that are in the purple family, but Glazer also suggest navy as a great color for brown eyes. “Navy also enhances the white and accentuates the brown of your eyes,” says Glazer, who appeared on The Today Show this past summer with her great beauty tips!

Jenna Adrian, a junior at Drexel University, is a brown-eyed girl. “For girls with brown eyes, the Lorac Pro palette is great because it's full of warmer toned shadows that bring out the warmth in brown eyes,” she says. Having a wide range of colors to choose from also helps you out when trying not to clash with your outfit.

Blue Eyes

What’s the trick to making blue eyes pop? Browns! “Brown hues will make blue eye appear brighter,” says Dennis. “Greys can work on a fairer skin with cool undertones as well if the grey has more of a blue undertone to it.”

Try to avoid going too dark if you have a cooler blue eye color. Light champagne colors or pinks are perfect because they won't draw too much away from your lighter eyes.

Glazer also suggests a palette like Smith & Cult’s Book of Eyes Eye Quad in Noonsuite. “[This] is gorgeous for blue eyes," she says. "The copper/rust and gold undertones truly make your baby blues stand out.” Your blue eyes will have a nice “peek-a-boo” moment when looking up from under gold and bronze lids.

Green Eyes

Green eyes are pretty versatile, allowing a slew of colors to go well with them. “Plums, purple, and browns with a cooler, red undertone will help to bring them out,” says Dennis.

If you feel like you’re having too much trouble picking out individual colors that go with your eye color, makeup companies usually have palettes made specifically for your color! “NYC and probably most major brands created palettes that were designed for specific eye colors!” says Samantha Burke, recent graduate of Siena College. “I have green eyes, and I love using purple shadow and liner. It really makes the green pop.”

Glazer seconds this pairing of purple hues and green eyes! “Super sophisticated and universally flattering, plums and mauves (especially ones with red or brick undertones) contrast gorgeously with green eyes to make them pop.” The best palettes for this look would be the same Smith & Cult’s Book of Eyes suggested for the brown eyes (Interlewd) or the New York Colors IndividualEyes palette Burke mentioned above.

Hazel Eyes

For those who have hazel eyes, you know that your eyes have so many different colors within them. And one of the best parts about hazel eyes is that no two pairs looks the same. So for this color, it’s best to know how your own eyes look. “Focus on what color you want to bring out in the hazel, whether it is the green or blue [or another color] and follow the suggestions [for that color],” says Dennis.

Having relatively versatile eyes is great because it is harder to go wrong. However, for specific colors Glazer has some ideas. “On hazel eyes, Smith & Cult’s Book of Eyes Eye Quad in Soft Shock has strong colors [and] shades like silver, black and olive that use dark shimmery tones to really emphasize all the different colors in the iris.” The olive would be great for a more everyday look, and then add a smoky edge with the black color. And who could ever go wrong with some silver? No one, that’s who.

Gray Eyes

Unlike with brown eyes, gray eyes can stand alone with a shadow of a similar hue. “On gray eyes, I love how Smith & Cult’s Book of Eyes Eye Quad in Mannequin Moves contains lots of neutral browns and greys,” says Glazer. “There is a beautiful pink pearl shimmer that is lovely when applied all over the lid.” She also suggests top off the look with a defined eyeliner in a dark gray color as well, like the b-line eye pen from Smith & Cult or the Sketch Marker Liquid Eyeliner from Too Faced.

Shapes

Deep set

Deep-set eyes have many characteristics that put them apart from the rest, one being a prominent brow bone. To really compliment these eyes, Glazer suggests drawing attention to the center and working your way out. “On deep set eyes, I recommend a pop of shimmer in the center, and to only darken the outer corners,” says Glazer.

Dennis also suggests a technique like this, but instead of a shimmer, she says you can just use a lighter color. “Use a lighter lid color or one that is closer tonally to the skin tone and then apply a darker color slightly above the crease area to create the illusion of depth,” she says.

Dennis also emphasizes that importance of blending! “Blend your eyeshadow edges, it creates a finished look to your application,” says Dennis. And don’t let that full brow bone fool you! “Also a brow that is slightly fuller it more youthful looking, but you go overboard on filling them because it will give the exact opposite effect,” Dennis adds. Nice and natural is hardly ever a bad thing.

Monolid

The definition of a monolid is just that: there is really no crease to the eye shape and has a less defined brow bone. However, the canvas made by having “one” lid is great for many looks. “A single mid tone color across the lid blend toward the brow bone works best with emphasis on eyeliner at the lash line and lots of mascara,” says Dennis. ”It helps to open the eyes up.”

Glazer adds, “For a monolid, a soft smoky blend all over the eyelid is beautiful.” For those that don’t want to just “open” up the eye, this smoky look would be even more dramatic.

Hooded

Hooded eyes have a brow bone that drops over the crease, hiding the lid. Since this part of the eye is hidden, you need to find other areas to accentuate instead. “A light highlight under the brow bone to give the appearance of a lift works well on a hooded eye,” says Glazer.

Dennis advises using a brighter color on the lid. “I like to use a satin or even a color with a bit of shimmer,” says Dennis. “I put the emphasis on the liner around the eye to give it definition and also mascara.” This contouring of the lid is great for definition on an eye shape that can possibly be hard to make look more dimensional.

Round

Round eyes are, obviously, more round-looking than other shapes. A big characteristic is the fact that more of the whites of the eyes are showing. These eyes look bigger and also have an “awake” to them, according to some makeup artists. But if you don’t like the wide-eyed look you may have, Dennis has a suggestion. “If you want to make the eyes look smaller, lining top and bottom and also lining the inner eye top and bottom with a dark liner and help create the illusion of a smaller eye,” says Dennis. However, if you really want to play up those big eyes, you can make them look even more open by getting a thick white, eyeliner, like the Jumbo Eye Pencil from NYX, and use it on your waterline. This extends the whites of your eyes, giving a bigger, doe-eyed look.

In terms of eyeshadow placement, it’s best to focus your makeup on your top lid and lash line. For your lower lash line, again, go with something like the white eyeliner or use a taupe or beige color for a little less extreme look. And just like with anything else, a smoky eye can take your look from “cute” to “sexy” in no time.

Downturned

Downturned eyes curve, you guessed it, down. Some may say these eyes look “sad” however, that’s just not true. “The key is to give the illusion that the eye isn't downturned,” says Dennis. “I like to not extend any shadow past the outer edge of the eye and all shadow, liner, [and other eye makeup] turn be applied in an upward fashion. I'll even usually cheat the liner slightly on the eye and make it thicker towards the outer part of the eye”

A very popular eyeliner trend for a downturned eye is the cat eye. “Cat eye, without much liner on the bottom, lifts a downturned eye,” says Glazer.
And if you have the opposite ‘upturned’ eye shape? Dennis says: “An upturned eye is youthful.” And while that may be true, the best way to play up that eye is with a straight wing liner, according to Glazer. “[It] looks great on an upturned eye,” says Glazer.

Almond

Eyes that are a little less round and more almond-shaped are super versatile with a lot of looks. They are also super symmetrical. “[They are] what most people strive for, so have fun!” says Dennis. And although almond-shaped eyes are easier to style than others, one trend does look better than the rest. “Smokey, blown out shadows are gorgeous on almond eyes,” says Glazer. If that doesn’t say dramatic, nothing does!

Even if you have the best makeup or an easy eye-shape like an almond-shape, Glazer does stress the importance of good brushes. “I think it is important to invest in good brushes and prep your lids before applying makeup,” says Glazer. Even if an eyeshadow has built-in primer, it’s always a good idea to use a separate one beforehand. Glazer says that a translucent powder over the eyelids also helps create a smooth foundation for your color.

Hopefully these tips and tricks get you through the holidays and beyond! Remember that makeup isn’t necessary, but if you’re going to indulge in it, might as well do it correctly!

People Are Freaking Out Over This 'Magic' Shirt

A few days ago, Madeline Ochoa posted a mirror selfie of her in a cute striped crop-top, and the internet is kind of freaking out about it.

Madeline’s picture might seem totally normal, but it wasn’t long before people started noticing something unusual about her simple striped top. It turns out, the shirt seemingly changes patterns depending on what format it's viewed on.

BuzzFeed was among the first to report this strange happening: mobile users saw the shirt as almost completely gray, while those who opened the photo to make it larger saw a swirly black and white pattern, and those who zoomed in even further saw a black and white horizontal pinstripe pattern. Weird, right?

It turns out that this is actually pretty normal in images with stripes, and that this specific type of optical illusion is called the “Moire effect.” Still cool, though! The more you know...

If You Suck at Eyeliner, This Trick Might Help

If I’m ever late in the morning, nine times out of ten it's because I messed up my eyeliner. There is nothing worse than having uneven wings. As soon as I notice that something is off with one of them, I add more to try to fix it. Then I need to add more to the other one to make it just a thick, and before you know it, I look like a racoon, and have to redo my whole face. The daily struggle is real.

Rochelle Wick, a beauty blogger based in Sri Lanka, has a trick to save you from your daily battle with your eyeliner, and it is so simple. She uses a simple piece of string to create #CatEyeGoals.

"I'm always trying to come up with innovative hacks—especially focused on liner and brows, which a lot of us struggle [with]," Rochelle says. "I try to come up with hacks using household materials, and this just popped into my head. I tried an elastic band first, but string seemed more practical." It's reassuring to know that even the makeup pros have the same makeup problems as we do.

New York State Is Trying to Provide Free College for Families Making Less Than $125K

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is moving forward with a plan to create free tuition for low and middle-income students at state colleges and universities, bringing to life one of the most exciting ideas talked about during the presidential campaign.

Any New Yorker whose family earns less than $125,000 a year will be eligible for the plan, The Washington Post reports. The plan will be fully implemented by 2019.

“College is a mandatory step if you really want to be a success,” Cuomo said at LaGuardia Community College in New York. “And the way this society said we’re going to pay for high school because you need high school, this society should say we’re going to pay for college because you need college to be successful. And New York state is going to do something about it.”

The plan needs to be approved by the state legislature first, but if it’s passed, New York will become the first state to offer tuition-free public higher education to its residents, Forbes reported.

Debt-free college has been a huge point of contention this year, especially when Democratic nominees Sen. Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton raised the issue during their campaigns for presidency. According to the Post, other states have also taken up plans for debt-free or free tuition colleges. This includes Tennessee, Oregon and Minnesota, which all have their own free community college programs.

With the rising costs of colleges creating a greater strain on students and their families, it is good that some states and politicians are taking the initiative to create plans to help eliminate or decrease the burden these costs have on students and families.

We're Only 5 Days Into 2017, & Republicans Are Already Trying to Dump Obamacare

$

We're less than a week into 2017, and President-Elect Donald Trump hasn't even taken office yet, but the GOP-controlled Congress has already cleared a path to repealing the Affordable Care Act. On Tuesday, Republicans unveiled a new 2017 budget that specifically targets the ACA, which has been dubbed the "Obamacare Repeal Resolution" by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Politico reports that voting on the budget will take place next week—meaning the end to Obamacare is likely in sight for the nearly 20 million Americans who depend on it.

Although the official repeal of the ACA may not happen for another two to four years, the new budget would take away expansions to Medicaid and other financially-involved aspects of Obama's namesake health care plan. Yes, the ACA had its share of problems—insurance premiums are expected to rise, especially for middle class Americans, while lower-than-expected participation in the program has led to higher insurance costs. However, completely overhauling a huge—we're talking 10,000 pages long—health care bill that involves a fair amount of federal government control is extremely difficult. Pair that with the process of coming up with a replacement health care plan, and the process could turn into disaster.

That's why, according to CNN, President Barack Obama is urging Democrats not to "rescue" the GOP on the new health care replacement they will eventually have to come up with. Instead, in a closed door meeting, Obama suggested to refer to the plan as "Trumpcare," and let the Republicans take the fall for what may very well be a hastily-crafted, messy or unsuccessful Obamacare replacement.

"If they want to break this, they own it," agreed Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, according to The Washington Post

Meanwhile, President-Elect Donald Trump tweeted out his pleas for bipartisan support and teamwork in rebuilding national health care. Clearly, both parties don't want to be at fault if something goes very, very wrong while Republicans replace Obamacare.

Throughout Trump's campaign, he promised that repealing and replacing Obamacare would be one of his top priorities once a Trump presidency began. Sticking to his campaigning strategy of labeling opponents as "Lying" or "Crooked," Trump also used his favorite social media app to call out one of the main opponents of Trumpcare, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

“I’d say to president-elect that this is serious, serious stuff. People’s health is at stake, people’s lives are at stake,” Schumer said in response to Trump's "clown" jokes, according to the Huffington Post. “Now, we understand that President-elect Trump is in a difficult spot, that Republicans are in a difficult spot...They want to repeal the ACA, and they have no idea how to replace it.”

Pretty Little Liars fans, you may find yourself hiding under the covers during the last 10 episodes of the series.

The show’s official Twitter account just released a seriously creepy trailer for what’s to come for our girls as they struggle with their ongoing battle against Uber A, and spoiler alert: it's pretty creepy.

The all-too-brief trailer shows Hanna crying and talking about how Uber A “wrecked her life,” so we can only imagine what Hanna is going to be dealing with. And she’s not alone—Emily asks Ali, “What did A.D. make you do?” which means that the group may have yet another secret to cover up.

While Hanna and Ali are clearly going to be driven crazy by Uber A, Mona is the one that has people talking. At the beginning of the trailer, she says, “We swim around in this fish bowl like we’re in control. We are not. There’s always been somebody watching. Manipulating.”

But Mona also gets a note that reads, "Time for pie. Be there." Will Mona go back to her evil past?

We’ll have to find out when the final 10 episodes air, beginning April 18 on Freeform. As for now, we’re wondering what else Uber A has up their sleeve for the girls.
