6 TV Breakups From 2016 We Still Aren't Over

$

0

Breakups are the absolute worst in real life, but it's almost more tragic to watch our favorite on-screen TV couples break up. It's so easy to fall in love with a couple after watching their love grow over the course of several seasons, which leaves us completely crushed whenever they face troubles that cause them to end their relationships. Sometimes it seems as though the writers must hate us because they separate some of our favorite couples, but it just makes us want to watch the next seasons to see if they find love elsewhere or get back together.

There were far too many tear-jerking breakup moments on different series aired in 2016, but these are six we just can't get over:

1. Alex and Jo, Grey’s Anatomy

Grey’s Anatomy is full of insanely attractive relationships between successful surgeons, but we were hit with a massive breakup we wish we didn’t have to see. Alex and Jo seemed to be the perfect team, and we were rooting for Jo to finally accept Alex's marriage proposal. Instead of walking down the aisle, Alex is now facing criminal charges for attacking Deluca after walking in at the wrong time and taking the situation between him and Jo totally out of context. We’re hoping the two can rekindle their love in the next season, but only if Alex can avoid being sent to prison. Fingers crossed!

2. Rory and Logan, Gilmore Girls Revival

We waited all year for the Gilmore Girls Revival (actually, we’ve been waiting 10 years, but who’s counting?), and it did not disappoint. We always wondered if Rory and Logan would get back together, but we weren’t expecting them to only be together as an overseas hookup. Even though we weren't complaining to see Logan without a shirt on after their final hookup, it broke our hearts to see their final goodbyes. It’s even harder to get a grasp on their final breakup after Rory’s final words, especially if their relationship is doomed to follow the same tragic path as Lorelai and Christopher's. At least we have the hope of Rory getting back together with Jess, as Lorelai finally found love with Luke.

3. Spencer and Toby, Pretty Little Liars

In the last season of Pretty Little Liars, we got a glimpse of what the girls’ lives were like after 10 years of being away from Rosewood. In typical Pretty Little Liars fashion, they were surrounded by constant drama caused by the ever-present A. Despite being at the edge of our seats throughout the entire season, we couldn’t help but feel sad over the end of Spoby. Their relationship had lasted several seasons, and we still can't picture PLL without their love. Even though Toby was engaged to another woman during this season, the goodbye kiss he shared with Spencer gave us all the feels. Couldn’t we have ended the series with a Spoby wedding!?

4. Kate and Toby, This Is Us

This Is Ushooked us after the very first episode, and we immediately fell in love with all of the characters in the show. Kate and Toby were clearly a perfect match right from the start. Who wouldn’t fall in love with him after he surprised Kate with a date-day devoted to treating her like the star she is? We were completely devastated when Toby gave up on their shared diet plans, making Kate face the tough decision of either suffering through food-envy every time they went to dinner or... ending their relationship. The season finale left us with a giant cliffhanger involving this couple, and we’re anxiously awaiting the new season to find out what will happen between Kate and Toby. If these two can’t make it, who can? They were literally made for each other.

5. Mindy and Danny, The Mindy Project

We couldn't help but hope Mindy would find her soulmate in her then-boyfriend, Danny. We were crushed to see their breakup during the latest season of The Mindy Project. Ultimately, we know Mindy will be better off on her own because their personalities were just too different, but it was still so hard to see one of our favorite TV couples split after seeing their love grow over four seasons. We’re hoping Mindy can find her true love in one of the coming seasons, but only if he’s equally as funny, clever and brilliant as she is.

6. Caroline and Stefan, The Vampire Diaries

With a cast filled with hot supernatural vampires, it’s almost too easy for us to fall for any of their relationships. However, we’ve been rooting for Stefan to find his one true love since Elena left him for his bad boy brother, Damon. We thought he found love with Caroline, and were way too excited about their engagement in the last season. Unfortunately for the couple (and us), the season ended with Stefan literally selling his soul to the devil to spare Caroline's twin daughters' lives. Even though this was a heroic move on his part, it means that Caroline won’t get her June wedding after all. We’re still hoping Stefan can serve his sentence with the devil, Kade, and will be able to turn his humanity back on in time to marry Caroline. We believe in you, Stefan!

Even though we're still feeling crushed over these 2016 TV breakups, we're hopeful 2017 will bring happiness for our favorite heartbroken characters.

14 Times Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds Were Couple Goals in 2016

The limelight has proven to be harsh on romance in the celebrity world. We’ve seen the best of celebrity couples fall in the year 2016—may you rest in peace Brangelina. But in the midst of these relationship ruins, there is a spark.

Join us as we swoon over the times Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds let their sparks of love fly in 2016:

1. When Ryan was the inspiration for Blake to take the solo gig in the film The Shallows—the very film that inspired us to eat a whole bucket of buttery popcorn knowing that our bodies would never compare to Lively’s (POST BABY) bod.

2. When Reynolds revealed that even on the couple’s first date ~fireworks flew~ despite the fact that it was a double date and Blake and Ryan were not a respective pair—hope it wasn’t too awk for their anonymous dates!

3. When the Deadpool star received his MTV award for Best Comedic Performance and chose the couple’s sex life as the topic for his equally comedic acceptance speech—and we didn’t even cringe!

4. When Blake attended her hubby’s surprise screening of Deadpool for the fans—clearly sans VIP seating—that’s love if we’ve ever seen it.

5. Don’t fret—we watched as Blake saw to it she received the VIP treatment at her second screening.

Two Deadpools, one cup. Your turn #L

6. When Blake told Marie Claire that she liked Ryan as much as she loved him—and then a single flood of tears streamed from our faces. #bestfriendgoals

7. When even Blake knew the Lively-Reynolds clan was transitioning from #couplegoals to #familygoals and jokingly promoted the couple’s “breeding” website.

8. When the couple returned to the restaurant where they fell in love to celebrate Ryan’s birthday—that was when we all realized fairytales do exist.

9. When even we could read that an undying love exists between the lines of Reynolds’ dark Twitter humor.

10. When they celebrated their child’s birthday at the land where dreams are made of—Hey Mickey! It’s our turn next.

11. Honestly ladies, get you a man who looks at you the way Ryan looks at Blake.

12. Come on—two beautiful babies later (are we at all surprised) and we can still feel the heat.

13. When Lively herself imparted some words of wisdom—revealing the secret to her happiness is the friendship she shares with Ryan—we won’t tell her it's the secret to ours too.

14. Rounding out our list—because we would never wish unlucky number 13 on our fav celeb duo—are a few ~candid~ shots of Ryan and Blake at Taylor Swift’s Fourth of July party this year:

Looks like true love does exist after all.

Everything Lauren Conrad does she does perfectly. So I should've known her pregnancy announcement would be no different.

LC posted the sweetest and simplest sonogram pic to Instagram earlier today to ring in the new year, announcing that she and her husband of two years, William Tell, are expecting their first child together.

The 10 Most-Talked About Moments from Bachelor Nation in 2016

Whew! 2016 was definitely a whirlwind for Bachelor Nation. From an insane ending to season 20 of The Bachelor, to a drama-filled season of The Bachelorette during the summer, we all gladly drank numerous glasses of rosé as we watched all of this drama unfold on our screens. Not only was there exciting drama, but there was also some very exciting news from former Bachelors and Bachelorettes! Let's get into the top 10 most talked about moments from The Bachelor Nation in 2016.

Ben, JoJo, and Lauren

This was a love triangle like no other, and TBH it still stresses us out. At the beginning of the year when Ben Higgin's season premiered, America was shocked when Ben told both the final two contestants, Lauren and JoJo, that he loved them—on national television. No Bachelor star has ever done this in the history of the show. Not only was Chris Harrison shocked, but all of Bachelor Nation had no words at all. We still can't get over this one.

JoJo and Jordan

Was their engagement fake? Was it real? After Lauren won Ben's heart, JoJo was named the new Bachelorette and found her own fairytale ending with Jordan Rogers. Since many viewers didn't trust Jordan before, during and after the season, the rumor that Jordan and JoJo's engagement was fake didn't seem outside the realm of possibility. Well, we follow both Jordan and JoJo on Instagram and it's safe to say that they are a super happy couple and very much still together.

Carly and Evan, Bachelor in Paradise

These two love birds gave all hope to singles everywhere. During this summer's Bachelor in Paradise, Carly absolutely despised Evan and didn't think he was attractive at all. Not only that, but viewers were starting to see how annoying this guy was. Once he faked an injury to get her attention, Evan finally, somehow, won Carly's heart, and we did find ourselves warming up to the couple. It just goes to show that you can never judge a book by its cover.

Chad

LOL. Need we say more? During JoJo's season this summer, not only was Chad the one person who started numerous problems, but he was probably one of the most hated contestants during the history of The Bachelor/The Bachelorette, ever. Now there's talk about getting his own show? What?! Oh Chad...

Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After

After the last season of The Bachelor ended, Ben and Lauren were offered their own spin-off show on Freeform. The series follows the lives of the happy (sometimes) couple which showcases the ups and downs of a new relationship and engagement. During the show, Chris Harrison asked the couple if they would want their wedding televised, which caused major anxiety for Ben and made Lauren question whether or not Ben loved her. Don't worry—the couple is still engaged and they are just as happy as ever!

Jade and Tanner's Wedding

As the only couple to successfully find love on Bachelor in Paradise, Jade Roper and Tanner Tolbert tied the knot this year with a televised wedding. We can't believe this happened and honestly, we couldn't be happier for the couple! To watch the full wedding, click here

Olivia's Mouth

During Ben's season, Olivia's mouth became an overnight Internet sensation. As portrayed as "the villain" on the show, contestant Olivia Caridi was the most hated amongst the women. Bachelor Nation found it hilarious that she was left on an island during the show. We hope that Olivia and her mouth got off of the island and are doing well!

Sean and Catherine Lowe's New Baby Boy

I CAN'T STOP

A photo posted by Catherine (Giudici) Lowe (@catherinegiudici) on

In July, season 17 Bachelor star Sean Lowe and his wife Catherine welcomed their new son Samuel Thomas and we are obsessed. These new parents are doing such an awesome job raising Samuel. Congratulations to the new family!

Caila Quinn's New Blog Launch

Contestant Caila from Ben's season used her TV stardom to create her new blog, WithLoveCaila.com, which launched in November. You all may remember Caila as the girl who was always happy and smiling around Ben, but this gorgeous single woman is currently taking New York City by storm with her fabulous new blog. You go girl!

Andi Dorfman's Book

Former Bachelorette Andi Dorfman made headlines earlier this year when her new book"It's Not Okay: Turning Heartbreak Into Happily Every After" was released in bookstores across the nation. In the book, Andi goes into great detail about her relationship with Josh Murray and how she got to be the successful woman that she is today. The book also caused quite a stir on Bachelor In Paradise this summer, which—yes—saw Josh's return. Also, we were fortunate enough to have her as a keynote this summer at Her Conference where she inspired all college women everywhere with her amazing story. Keep being fabulous, Andi!

How She Got There: Kristie Dash, Senior Editor at Obsessee

$

0

Name: Kristie Dash
Job Title and Description: Senior Editor at Obsessee
College Name/Major: Pace University, Communication Studies
Twitter and Instagram Handle(s):@kristiedash; @obsessee

What does your current job entail?

Kristie Dash: Obsessee doesn’t have a website—social media replaces the need for our website—so apart from creating content that lives on those platforms every day, I also manage our influencer network and day-to-day editing of a lot of our features that go up. Though we’re lucky enough to share many resources with Clique Media Group (Who What Wear, Byrdie, My Domain) as a whole, our Obsessee-dedicated team is small so it’s very collaborative and we all have a hand in everything, which I love.

What is the best part of your job?

KD: Being creative about how we’re using social media to tell stories and then taking action and make them happen. So much of what we all see in media has been done before in formats that are tried-and-true, but it’s so satisfying to know that our biggest goal is to do the kind of stuff that no one else has thought of. For example, we’ll do these Snapchat takeovers where we’ll flip it back and forth to a few different people in totally different cities, almost like you’re watching a conversation unfold on someone’s Facetime. And then the other day after interviewing Zendaya, I thought it would be cool to actually insert her audio clip from the chat into the Instagram post in addition to writing it all out. We were able to make that happen within five minutes with the help of our video team, and it added another layer to the feature that made it a lot more personal. That kind of discovery is exhilarating to me!

What was your first entry level job in your field and how did you get it?

KD: I was Eva Chen’s assistant when she was editor-in-chief at Lucky magazine. I didn’t really have to interview for the job because she already knew me from being her intern at Teen Vogue. It goes to show that your internships are basically interviews. Now that I’m always busy and understand where these industry leaders are coming from, no one has time to go on this big search for job candidates. If you’re a good intern and if the timing is right, you’re hired. If you’re not hired right away, because the timing wasn’t right, I can bet you you’ll get a job from someone who heard you were a great intern.

What is one thing you wish you knew about your industry when you first started out that you know now?

KD: That it will be more rewarding than you think it will be if you have an open mind. Notice the little things because they will not only help you grow but they will inspire you to think bigger.

Who is one person who changed your professional life for the better?

KD: Well Eva, obviously. This sounds dramatic but most of the things I have in life are thanks to her. Metaphorical things and physical things [laughs]. Seriously. My career in general, a big part of my understanding of the industry, the shoes I’m wearing right now… I even met my best friend at the internship she hired me for. It’s kind of insane. I’m forever grateful to her. But I also have to give a shout out to Sarah Conly (now at Cosmopolitan/Seventeen) who gave me my very first internship at Harper’s Bazaar. That experience helped me get the others down the road and she gave me a chance when I was just a baby!

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

KD: This sounds backwards and I don’t know if I’d necessarily call it a mistake but it’s something I’ve only recently learned and realized… Don’t burn out. Seriously. Once you’re out of college, you work for the rest of your life. If you’re still reading this interview, you probably are an over-achieving go-getter which is awesome and great but there’s a strong chance that after working through dinner every single night for five years, you’ll lose steam. Take a moment to breathe. Travel. Literally, you have to study abroad during school if you have the resources to do so. Find scholarships to make it happen if you need to. There shouldn’t be a huge rush to fulfill every goal you have in your career. It will all happen as it’s meant to happen, and to realize this is a refreshing relief, to be honest. Stop stressing out! I’m always stressed [laughs].

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

KD: When I interned at Vogue I had the privilege of going to the Met Gala. I was obviously just there to help, but to a young girl from the suburbs of Western Pennyslvania, this was a very big, fancy deal.

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

KD: Someone who really cares. I can tell within 4 minutes of meeting someone if they really want it because that’s how I used to be. And still am! I can read it in someone’s eyes. It sounds creepy but it’s true. You can’t fake that passion and persistence unless you’re a talented actress. And if we’re just talking over email, show me that you care. I feel kind of bad for girls now, especially in NYC, because doing, like, seven internships is basically normal. I did so many internships but back then it was special. Now, it seems like the requirement. But if you’re just trying to get your foot in the door and you’re early on in your school years, build your resume by participating in organizations you care about. After the results of this past election, it’s admirable now more than ever to show that you have an understanding of the world we live in. Fashion isn’t only about clothes.

What advice would you give a 20-something with similar aspirations?

KD: Find the right balance between speaking up and keeping your head down. It’s special to find yourself feeling like you belong in a workplace, so if you’re lucky enough to feel that way, be confident (but professional) and share your thoughts and personality. If you don’t, it’ll take you longer to make your mark. With that being said, it takes hard work and extra hours to back those thoughts up, and being humble and gracious all the while is the most important thing of all. Kindness is key. Always.

This Is Kylie Jenner's Favorite 2016 Moment, Because Duh

Kylie Jenner has had many stellar moments this year. From expanding her best-selling cosmetics line to receiving her new puppy, Penny, the youngest in the Kardashian-Jenner clan has been busy living life. Just in time for the new year, Kylie posted her favorite 2016 moment on social media and we totally understand because it's seriously goals.

She shared a video of her first time attending the Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. She had her sleek black hair side-parted and cropped. Her makeup was as flawless as always. But that dress is what's making us jealous—that glitzy embellished Balmain gown.

Kylie clearly understands that beauty is pain, because she snapchatted how the getup turned her feet purple and made her bleed. Apparently it was worth it for her gorgeous moment in the spotlight on the steps of the Met. Here's to Kylie continuing to be our fashion inspo in 2017!

12 Celeb Couples That Prove Love Didn't Die in 2016

$

2016 saw a number of celebrity breakups and divorces (i.e. Brangelina), which made us think that this was the year that love died, tragically. Once we couldn’t count all of them using our hands, we knew it was time to stop counting. Of course, if we focused just on those who called it quits, we might forget the celebrities who debuted (or rekindled) their relationships this year.

1. Amy Schumer and Ben Hanisch

If you needed convincing that stars are just like us, consider that celebrities also use dating apps. No shame, you gotta find a match somehow, right? Amy Schumer took advantage of this trend and met her boyfriend, Ben Hanisch, a furniture designer, on an exclusive dating app. The pair made their official debut back in January and have been going steady ever since. Last month, they celebrated their one-year anniversary together.

2. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth were set to be married in 2012 but broke up not long after their engagement announcement. The couple reunited in 2016 after an extended break. While their relationship has proven unpredictable from the start, there is a clear attraction that they just can’t shake. This year, the two celebrated the holidays together and made us swoon at the sight of them cuddling in pajamas.

3. Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik

It appears that the Hadid sisters have a thing for musicians—and we certainly can’t blame them. Both Gigi and Zayn are in their prime in their respective careers. They are also a very attractive couple. I mean, did you see their Vogue photo shoot? Ooh la la. The pair made their relationship Instagram official in February 2016 after they had been spotted together and rumors had begun circulating. While she made an appearance in an avant garde-inspired music video for his single “Pillowtalk,” we are hoping his sophomore album will include a song dedicated to Gigi, featuring his signature falsetto sound that we love.

4. Liam Payne and Cheryl Cole

The relationship between Liam Payne and Cheryl Cole is probably the most unexpected celebrity pairing of 2016, but we are definitely here for it, no doubt. The pair go way back, all the way back to when Liam was on The X Factor alongside his One Direction bandmates. Since February, both have been serving up some major #couplegoals with sweet and romantic gestures on social media. It was announced that the couple is expecting their first child together after Cheryl stepped out with a visible baby bump in November.

5. Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson

The couple that supports each other, stays together. On Christmas Eve, Khloe went to support her beau at one of his Cleveland Cavaliers game. They also wear matching clothing, including faux fur coats and camo jackets. Essentially, they are too adorable for words, and we love watching as their budding relationship is documented all over our Instagram feeds. Watch out, Cleveland's lucky number 13 is off the market!

6. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Royals are masters of courtship. This fall, Prince Harry successfully courted Suits actress Meghan Markle. On the surface, their relationship appears to be a whirlwind romance made for the silver screen—American actress meets a British royal. Donning matching bracelets, meeting in London for low-key dates and picking out a Christmas tree together seems pretty official to us.

7. Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom

We first saw a glimpse of Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom’s budding relationship at an after party following the Golden Globes. Months later, they still haven’t officially confirmed their partnership, but they aren’t fooling anyone. As a couple, they are irresistibly attractive and ooze sex appeal in every photo. I mean, at this point, why are they teasing us like this? For Halloween, the pair dressed up as Hillary and Bill Clinton. Politics aside, we think committing to a couples costume makes Orlando Bloom a keeper for sure.

8. Ariana Grande and Mac Miller

Since their collaboration on her 2013 hit single “The Way,” Ariana Grande and Mac Miller haven’t been able to escape rumors suggesting that they were dating. Seeing them get cozy at the VMAs together basically confirmed all of our wishes, which were practically three years in the making. Miller recently snapped a photo of Grande putting on her makeup while she sat in a sink, proving that they are absolutely adorable, and simply put, we can’t get enough.

9. JoJo Fletcher and Jordan Rodgers

Although some of us (*cough* me) are still salty that Ben chose Lauren over JoJo, JoJo finally got her fairytale ending on The Bachelorette with Jordan Rodgers. I mean, that ~dreamy~ kiss during her Bachelorette debut kind of sealed the deal, right? While the couple have been keeping a low profile, their Snapchat stories together are all we need to entertain us for hours.

10. Laura Prepon and Ben Foster

In October, Lauren Prepon got engaged to actor Ben Foster. While the pair have made public appearances together at events, they have kept their relationship relatively low-key. In fact, their engagement was so on the DL that Ashton Kutcher, their mutual BFF, was upset that he heard of their engagement news along with the rest of the world.

11. Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna

Don’t mind the Kardashian family, because just keeping up with Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna’s drama has become a daily routine. Despite their rough patches as of late, we are still rooting for them to make their relationship work, especially for their baby girl, Dream. From getting engaged in April after only four months of dating to welcoming their first child in November, it’s possible that everything may have been a little rushed. Regardless, we wish them the best in 2017.

12. Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor

The award for cutest couple goes to (*drum roll*): Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor. While Taylor didn’t attend the Emmys, she supported her partner, Paulson, over social media, and it was the cutest thing ever! The pair have been an item since they started dating last year and have been going strong since. While the couple weren’t together on the evening of the awards show, there was clearly ~love~ in the air. On the red carpet, Paulson gave a shout-out to her love while she was being interviewed, and Holland responded in the most perfect way.

Is there anything that Bella Hadid can’t do? After a very successful 2016, walking for the first time in the VS fashion show, being named the new face of Nike and being on the cover of countless magazines, the supermodel finished the year by announcing that she was collaborating with the brand Chrome Hearts on her own clothing line.

Hadid announced the collab a few weeks ago on Instagram, and has taken to social media again to share more sneak peaks into the collection.

In the photos, we can see two pieces from the collection. The first is a patent leather motorcycle hat with silver metal detailing, that will also be available in red and black, and the second is a crop tee with “Fuck You” written across the chest.

From what we have seen so far, the pieces are definitely anything but ordinary. Bella and Chrome Hearts have been keeping the details of the launch secret, so make sure to follow the Instagram account @chromeheartsxbella to keep up with all of the upcoming information (and hopefully more spoilers!).

Everything You Need to Know About Recruiters

$

0

Recruiters — you’ve probably heard of them, but who are they? Where do they come from? What do they do? How can they help you as a college woman? Her Campus is here to help. We talked to two former recruiters — Andrea Baker, principal and founder of Talent Investment LLC, and Danielle Melendy, director of culture and people at Clinique Media Group — to answer all your questions. Get ready to take on the world of career fairs.

Who are recruiters?

Recruiters are people who come to a college or job fair to tell people about their company and what opportunities they have. “Recruiters come from all different parts of an organization,” Baker says. They may work in their company's HR office or simply recruit on top of their role. “I actually had a marketing background,” she says. “With recruiters, you are a brand ambassador for your organization.” Melendy describes recruiters as representatives of a company who search for and recruit new talent to join their organization. “These people are usually cultural ambassadors and have a great eye for finding people who will do well at company based on their skills and abilities,” she says. Recruiters will be able to tell you what their company is about and the different positions they’re hiring for.

What do they do?

Recruiters do a few different things for their respective companies. “As a recruiter, you’re responsible for providing information about your organization, the culture," Baker says. "You’re a cheerleader for your organization." Although recruiters will give you information, it’s ultimately up to you to have an idea of what industry or company you want to work for. “Students have to gauge: What are the areas and what things interest me? And what type of an organization do I want to work for?” she says.

Melendy describes what recruiters do in two parts: external and internal. Externally, they “build a recruiting brand, identify the best places to advertise the company and open positions, network and build relationships with potential hires, usher candidates through the interview process and ensure a great candidate experience, act as a reference for any questions about the company, give employment offers and send follow up paperwork, [and] help transition candidates during the onboarding process,” she says. Internally, they “meet with hiring managers to understand their current needs, create job descriptions to accurately portray the position, manage the interview process with multiple internal stakeholders throughout various stages, [and] represent the needs and expectations of both the employer and the candidate.” If you can figure work with a recruiter to help them help you, you’re much more likely to find one who can help you.

How can they help you?

In addition to giving you information about the company, recruiters will look at your resume, talk to you and find out what your interests are. Baker says the main things they’re looking for are “why you’re interested in that organization and what sort of roles are appropriate for you?”

Melendy says, “Recruiters may be the first people that college women interact with when trying to find a career.” She suggests building a good relationship with recruiters so you can ask them questions. And just like with any type of networking, keep in touch!

Alaina Leary, a second year grad student at Emerson College, has had both positive and negative experiences with recruiters. She says the field she’s in, book publishing, doesn’t have many recruiters for entry-level jobs. She has, however, gotten contacted by recruiters for marketing, publicity and social media positions. “I think recruiters can be extremely useful in getting your foot in the door, especially if you're flexible and don't need a permanent placement yet,” she says. “A lot of recruiters deal with full time employment, but the employment is temporary or an open-ended contract.”

Baker stresses really looking at an organization and what they do and believe in. It’s “like looking at college,” she says.

What can’t they help you with?

Although a recruiter will be able to help you with a lot, there are definitely some things that are off limits. “They can’t be your individual advocate,” Baker says. “They can steer you in some direction, but at the end of the day, they’re representing the organization so they can’t be your personal career counselor.” It’s up to you to learn as much as you can about different opportunities and roles and do your best to get yourself where you want to be.

Melendy has similar advice. “To be successful, you need to invest in yourself and career but also take advantage of the resources that are out there for you,” she says. If you build a relationship with a recruiter, they’ll be able to help you — but they won’t be able to give you an unfair advantage.

Now that you know who recruiters are, you’ll be more prepared to meet them and know what to expect. Be sure to do your research beforehand in order to be as ready as you can be. If you have an idea of what type of company you want to work for, you’ll be more likely to find a recruiter who can help you. Good luck, collegiettes!

27 Things Chick Flicks Got Wrong About Your 20s

$
0
0

Love them or hate them, you can’t deny that chick flicks take up a huge portion of the movie universe. While movies aren’t exactly accurate portrayals of real life, you have to wonder why they assume that every 20-something’s existence revolves around love, looks and little misunderstandings. Here are some other ways rom-coms have got you all wrong.

1. Most of your time is spent stressing over finances, not stressing over love.

Having a SO isn’t going to fulfill you like a steady paycheck will.

2. And when someone does catch your eye, it takes more than good looks to fall in “like” with them.

Forget attractive people—the only thing your stomach flips for is pizza.

3. Seriously, you care about other things besides romance.

Even though you often fantasize about someone wanting you as much as you want abs.

4. If someone does like you, they’re not going to tell you through some grand romantic gesture.

Expect heart emojis in your inbox versus a boom box at your window.

5. But whatever, because you’re perfectly fine being single.

How can you be sad knowing that there’s a whole world of prospects that you haven’t been rejected by yet?

6. Actually, regardless of your relationships status, your world doesn’t revolve around having a SO.

If it does, there’s this super fun thing called independence—you should try it some time!

7. You also don’t have a group of nasty girls or “rivals” that you constantly butt heads with.

Because this is not middle school and we women have to stick together, damn it.

8. There’s way more diversity in your social circle/university/town than what’s depicted on-screen.

Or at the very least, you know that not everyone in this world is strictly white, straight, financially stable and able-bodied.

9. And your friendships aren’t side plots—they play a huge role in your life.

Literally the only relationships that count are the ones that will encourage you to eat peanut butter from the jar while PMSing.

10. However, every friendship you have right now isn’t necessarily built to last.

Things get in the way—and not just a school bus inciting murder rumors, a la Mean Girls’ Cady and Regina.

11. Especially since you’ll fight over lots of things—you know, instead of fighting over, say, the same person.

Love interests come and go, but that expensive top you let them borrow was brand new, so they better return it ASAP.

12. No one will encourage you to undergo a major makeover.

As it is, you can’t even afford a new brush set, let alone for a whole team to glamify you like Agent Hart in Miss Congeniality.

13. Because come on, you have better things to do than to obsess about your appearance.

No shade Princess Diaries, but Mia Thermopolis would’ve become the queen of Genovia with or without frizzy hair, thank you very much.

14. The movies don't acknowledge all the struggles you experience, especially when it comes to your mental health.

As if you’ve made it this far in adulthood without coming to terms with factors that affect your emotional and mental well-being.

15. They oftentimes fail to address—or completely glaze over—racism, sexism, misogyny, xenophobia…

The list, and your annoyance, goes on and on.

16. Yet every single melodramatic problem that arises ends up getting resolved.

Whereas for you, new problems pop up and grow like bad pimples every day!

17. Some “issues” are so far-fetched, like being loved by two people at once.

Meanwhile you can’t even get your cat to look at you most days.

18. You're also less likely to get caught stalking a crush IRL than you are through social media.

Thanks to Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram you can track their whereabouts and gaze at their face without ever leaving your house!

19. Kissing isn't always a perfect affair; it can get super awkward and sloppy.

Meanwhile you kiss people that treat your mouth like it’s an oxygen tank and they’re running out of air.

20. When it comes to sex, it rarely ends in mutual relief and pleasure.

Meanwhile the only things that can successfully arouse and satisfy you are chicken nuggets.

21. Not every person you kiss or have sex with is going to want to date you, and vice versa.

22. And no one, at any point in timerandomly breaks out in song for no reason.

Unless Beyoncé’s lastest hit comes on in a store, because when it comes to Queen Bey, you can’t not jam out in public.

23. On that note, sad music won't play when you feel like crap.

Otherwise it would just be on a constant loop, especially when winter break ends.

24. It takes more than the length of a single pop song to clean your room.

This is by far the most unrealistic thing of all.

25. And there’s no way in hell you’d ever leave an elaborate meal untouched.

How do these fictional characters have the audacity to eat only a few bites of a pancake, when they could eat the entire stack?

26. Let’s be real: your life is more like a horror movie than a romantic comedy.

Cue the screams and gasps instead of the “heartwarming” laughs.

27. But even if it isn’t as pleasant, romantic or dramatic—at least it’s never boring.

And you’ve got friends and family to watch you grow and help you through it all, every step of the way.

How My High Standards For Men & Relationships Have Left Me Perpetually Alone

$

0

I’m not the friend you go to for relationship advice. I’m the friend who you complain with about the rude guy at the bar or promise to live with if neither of us gets married. I am perpetually alone not because I’m a man-hater or because I fear commitment, but because of my high standards for relationships and men.

Some of the biggest influences in my life have been TV and movies. I grew up in front of a screen, and I loved it. I still own an embarrassing number of VHS tapes, many of which are Disney movies. I’m one of those people who loves re-watching movies, and I like to recite lines just for fun. These movies, which I adored so much, are one of the reasons I have such high expectations for relationships. I know it sounds silly, but this is where my relationship issues all began.

It started when I saw Beast defend Beauty, when Prince Eric fell in love with a girl who was very different from him, and when Quasimodo was brutally friend-zoned. These characters were proof that fairytale love exists, and I expected my future relationships to be fairytale-like. All that slightly changed after my parents got divorced. My dad moved out, I lived with my mom and sister, and I spent most of my time with my mom’s female-dominated side of the family. The estrogen levels were very high, and so up went my expectations for men and relationships.

It’s ironic because you would think, with my parents’ divorce, that I would have been anti-relationships, but I just have high standards for myself and my partner because I have seen a bad relationship. I was strangely optimistic for my own love life. I wasn’t going to let myself down by getting into a “bad” relationship. If I kept my expectations high and waited as long as possible to find the right person, it would all work out. I wouldn’t waste my time, or anyone else’s for that matter by dating people I saw no future with. I promised myself I wouldn’t mess up the way my parents did. I guess I blamed my parents for not knowing that their relationship wouldn’t work out. Granted, I’m glad for my existence and that of my sister, but how much pain could have been avoided if they never married at all?

Related: What It's Like to Date if You (or Your SO) Had Toxic Parents

Knowing what a messed up relationship can do to people, I promised myself I wouldn’t settle for mediocrity. I would never settle, period. I thought I knew what I wanted out of a relationship. But I had no way of knowing since I had never been in one.

My so-called "deal-breakers" were concepts pushed at me through TV shows, movies and my feminist family members. I had no way of knowing what my actual deal-breakers would be because I didn’t let myself date.

I never understood what was so great about dating around. My older half-sister once told me to date all different types of guys to find out what you like in a potential partner. I completely avoided this piece of wisdom, and I missed out on some dating opportunities because I was scared: Scared I wouldn't like the person. Scared they wouldn't like me. Scared I would like that person. Scared they would like me.

This isn’t a sob story, and please don’t email me with potential blind dates. I know what my issue is here. I know I have to change this habit of comparing everything to either entirely imaginary, idealistic relationships or my parents' toxic relationship. The first step, writing this story and admitting that having ridiculously high standards, is just a coping mechanism.

5 Times Nick Was A Woke Bae During the 'Bachelor' Premiere

I expected a lot from Nick during the Bachelor premiere—he has been on this show for four years now. But one thing I didn’t expect was for Nick Viall to show up as a woke bae. Color me pleasantly surprised that these five moments happened.

1. When he said he wants all the women to feel empowered

Nick Viall, feminist? He made a point of saying that he wants all the women to feel as empowered as possible, so must be true.

2. When we found out his kid sister is his best friend

We’ve known Nick’s little sister Bella for years, and she’s always been ~wise~. But watching Nick get dating advice from her was the cutest thing ever and maybe I like him a little bit more now.

3. When he had an open conversation with Liz, the girl he slept with at Jade and Tanner’s wedding

No way around it, this was just going to be awkward. But even though Nick was noticeably uncomfortable talking with Liz about their one-night stand, he pushed through and heard her side of things. *respect*

4. When he gave the first impression rose to Rachel

Although it’s clear she deserves better than this show, Rachel has real potential here. She’s an intelligent lawyer who is v beautiful—basically the whole package. Rachel is also the first black contestant to receive the first impression rose. It’s not enough to overcome this franchise’s diversity problem, but at least it’s progress.

5. When he kept Alexis around even though they disagreed on whether she was a shark or a dolphin

Nick and the aspiring dolphin trainer may not have reached an agreement on what kind of sea-dwelling animal costume she was wearing, but she still got a rose. See, he doesn’t have to win every argument.

But it wasn’t all marshmallows and totally unexpected awareness. One girl gave Nick a framed Carrie Bradshaw quote, and he acted like he had no idea what it was. So obviously he hasn’t watched SATC. Can’t win ‘em all.

How Makeup Is Helping This Amazing Cancer Patient Get Through Her Treatment

22-year-old Amanda Ramirez, also known as @comptonsveryown_ or God’s Girl on instagram, was diagnosed with stage-3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma this summer. Far from letting herself get defeated, she’s fighting through with her love for makeup! Amanda told Yahoo! Beauty that she started to learn about makeup at the age of 19 and fell in love with the art of beauty.

Amanda’s motto is, “when you look beautiful, you feel beautiful.”  She has inspired thousands on Instagram by sharing her journey. Through chemo, she makes sure she looks flawless with her impeccable makeup, and poses for the camera with friends.

A photo posted by God's Girl (@comptonsveryown_) on

Through all this, she’s managed to get even more self-confidence. She understands the importance of self-love, and empowers other women to love who they are. “Self-confidence came from years of learning about myself and learning to love who I am,” Amanda says. “For years I was bullied and fat-shamed, but I took the initiative to say enough! I’m beautiful regardless of my size, and it does not define me, nor anyone else for that matter. It’s important to me, because loving yourself is important—it’s vital to your well-being.”

Amanda constantly shows that she is strong as hell—not because she is fighting for her life, but because she claps back to her haters with a smile on her face and joy in her eyes.

"Youugly, you fat, don't chemo make you skinny ?, you an attention whore, just die already" me @ all your ugly comments cus I'm blessed and happy, not to mention I've helped thousands of women understand self love #mood

As she was unable to keep her job after her diagnosis, she decided to set up a GoFundMe account titled, “Help Me Kick Lymphoma's Ass!” On her page she writes, “I'm extremely positive, despite the way I physically feel, my mental state is very intact. There are days where I want to give up, but there are many people that look to me for comfort and assurance. I realize that it's bigger than me, God has given me this to show the world that you can be fierce and strong while having a bit of vulnerability. I hope to inspire and help those whom don't feel they can go on with something that weighs on the heart so heavily.” Anyone can help out this inspiring young lady by donating on her GoFundMe account.

We all have something to learn from Amanda—to love ourselves despite what others think, be fierce, help others, and most importantly, be a force of nature.

An Open Letter to the Girl Who Doesn't Want Kids

$

0

When I think about what I want my future to look like, I envision a lot of different things: a small apartment in a big city, a husband, and lots and lots of dogs. I see myself walking down a busy street with black pumps and a Starbucks cup with some catchy indie song playing in the background. But mostly, I want to be successful on my own terms—I want to get my degree, get an internship and be a kick-ass editor at some hip publishing house.

I’ve always known I wasn’t one of those girls who would be content just staying home and being a mother, and I hated that people expected that of me as a woman. Nothing sounds worse to me than a house in the suburbs, a minivan and mom jeans. Not that being a mother necessarily means becoming a Real Housewife of Suburbia, but it does mean making sacrifices I don’t think I want to make.

It’s not even that I don’t like kids. I don’t mind them for the most part…from a distance. I just hate that my body is biologically built to be a vessel and that I am somehow obligated to procreate because of my ability to do so. People look at me expectantly when I tell them my plans for the future as if I have forgotten some vital stepping-stone on my path to successful womanhood.

I just never developed that maternal instinct, that second-natured obsession with onesies and baby booties. I’m that girl that un-friends you on Facebook the minute you start posting weekly pregnancy updates. As a woman, everyone just expects you to want the white picket fence: marry the boy-next-door from high school, move to a good school district and have a baby girl named Emily or Sarah. It’s become so ingrained in society’s definition of womanhood that saying you’re not sure if you want kids becomes blasphemous.

I want to have the luxury to just pack up my apartment and move half way across the world. I want to travel on weekends, sleep in on Sundays, and work long hours during the busy season without feeling guilty for missing my son’s bedtime for the third time this week.

I want to wear sexy lingerie around my house for no real reason. I want to eat late dinners at fancy restaurants. I want to see the ballet and opera and fashion week. I want to have friends in Paris and family in Amsterdam and a cabin in the mountains. The lifestyle that I dream of just isn’t compatible with motherhood.

I’m not saying that this won’t all change someday. Who knows? Maybe I’ll wake up when I’m 32 and want nothing more than to settle down in a cozy neighborhood with a golden retriever. Maybe I’ll name my son after my father and take up scrapbooking and I won’t even think about the life I thought I wanted. But I have to at least try, don’t I?

I dream of my future career more than I dream of my future children. This doesn’t make me cold or reckless or less of a woman. I am not obligated by some biological contract to push out babies and shop at The Gap. I don’t want to look back on my life and regret not doing the things I dreamed of as a little girl because I got busy with PTA meetings and bake sales and neighborhood picnics. I want to be able to look back and say I did everything I ever wanted and nothing that I didn’t.
