8 Fears You Have About Choosing an Out-of-State School (& How to Deal)

$

The thought of going to an out-of-state college might simultaneously sound like the best and worst idea that you have ever had. On one hand, you’re going to have the opportunity to meet a bunch of new people, you’ll get a fresh start and you won’t have to tell your parents where you’re going every time you leave the house. On the other hand, it’s a bit scary to think about heading to a completely new place and leaving your family, friends and even pets behind.

The fact that you’re even considering an out-of-state college shows that you are totally ready to take on the challenge. Luckily, you aren’t the first to be nervous about attending a college far from home. Here are eight common fears that every senior has – and how to deal!

1. You won’t know anyone

We aren’t going to pretend that this isn’t a completely valid fear, because it definitely is ––especially if you’re moving to a state where you don’t even have family. The idea of being completely on your own is a bit of a shock to the system, but it might turn out to be one of the best things ever.

First of all, you get a completely clean slate. Now, we’re not saying that you have to go and change everything about yourself the second you step on campus, but you have the opportunity to start fresh and rid yourself of any stereotypes from high school.

If you want to make sure that you know at least a couple people when the first day rolls around, try to make friends with people at orientation. Although some people might try to play it cool, most freshmen have the same fear of not knowing anyone right off the bat. When you meet someone new or talk to someone that you could see yourself hanging out with, don’t be afraid to ask to exchange numbers – or even Snapchats. What better way to become friends with someone than by exchanging the occasional puppy filter?

It’s also be a good idea to look into the programs or clubs that your future school has. Usually during the first few weeks of classes, there are interest meetings for freshmen to attend. Joining a club with other people who share your interests is the perfect way to bond.

“In high school, I had two best friends that I did everything with,” says Paige VanderLeest, a junior at Iowa State University. “I loved being around them and I felt comfortable around them, so I never felt the need break out of my small social circle. I am extremely thankful for those friends, but I know I wouldn't have expanded my horizons had I gone to an in-state school.”

The fact that you don’t know anyone means that you have plenty of room for everyone you meet to potentially become your new friend. While it would be awesome to have your day one BFFs with you at college, you will be so thankful to have two separate squads who will always have your back.

2. This is the first time you’ll be away from your family

Sure, you may have gone with your friends on spring break or a summer program for a few weeks, but potentially spending an entire semester away from your family can be tough. It mayt be hard to believe that you're going to miss things like your parents randomly coming into your room (and not closing the door) or having to be your sibling's personal driver, but you will be fine.

Living far from home might also mean that you have to do things like make your own appointments, pay your own bills and take care of other things that your parents usually take care of. No one leaves home completely ready to enter the adult world, but after you successfully make your first doctors appointment you will totally embrace your inner Olivia Pope and start handling things on your own left and right.

At first, it can be hard to say goodbye to those who know you best, but being on your own will encourage you to move towards being more independent. "Living away from home for the first time is scary," says Ally Deck, a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin. "After your first time away, the hardest part is over ––you’ve ripped off the Band-Aid and you realize that you're capable of being independent. Living at home is great, but it will always be there to return to."

It’s going to take some getting used to, but there are plenty of ways to make sure you feel as close to home as possible. Maybe you can plan a weekly Skype date with your mom or kindly ask your sister to unblock you on Instagram so that you can see what she’s up to (and promise not to snitch). Also, the more you get out of your room and get involved on campus, the less you’ll notice the absence of your family.

3. You won’t be able to adjust to the weather

If you’re moving one or two states over, you probably won’t experience that much of a weather change. But, if you’re looking to move to a completely different coast, you’re in for a whole new world (or at least a whole new part of the country). It’s probably a good idea to do your research and find out the general temperatures for each season, so you’re not left out in the rain ––literally. Fortunately, moving to a different place is definitely a reason for going on a shopping spree, or at least adding a few staple items to your wardrobe, which is never a bad thing.

In terms of knowing what to actually wear on a particular day, watching the weather or checking the weather app on your phone is definitely never a bad idea. "I used to wonder why my parents watched the weather every morning but now it's become part of my own daily routine as well," says Kelsie Savageau, a freshman at Murray State University. "It makes a difference knowing ahead of time, exactly how miserable it's projected to be outside."

Depending on whether you're moving from a warmer climate to a cooler climate (or vice versa), there are adjustments that you can make in your dorm room that will make you feel more at home. If you're used to cooler temperatures where you're from, make sure to bring a fan so that you stay cool regardless of the toasty temperatures outside.

For those used to warmer temperatures, making the move to a cold environment can be a bit of a shock to the system. It's probably a good idea to invest in a space heater, just in case your roommate isn't thrilled about the idea of turning the entire room into a personal sauna, just make sure your dorm allows it. It also wouldn't hurt to bring along a few blankets that can be your source of warmth day or night.

It might take a few weeks (or months) to better adjust to the out of state weather, but you will become a master of multiple climates ––which is something not many people can say.

4. It will be expensive for you to go home

If you’re looking forward to moving far from home, it more than likely won’t be an issue if you can’t go home every single weekend. However, there will probably be some moments throughout the semester when you will want to go home, but might not be able to because of the quick turnaround time.

Thanksgiving is a prime example of this. It’s a major holiday that you, of course, want to spend with your family, but it might be a bit costly to go home when Christmas break is right around the corner. Some out of state collegiettes opt to stay on campus during the break but still make the most of it.

Erika Harrell, a junior at Howard University, is one of them. “Just because you are in college does not mean you can't do certain traditional Thanksgiving things,” Erika says. “Watch the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade or A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. It may not be the same as if you were home, but it can still put you in the holiday spirit.”

You can also consider getting a part-time job to help pay for your plane or bus tickets home. Your parents want you to be able to come home for breaks and they will really appreciate it if they see you are trying to step up and help out.

5. You’ll always feel homesick

This fear is pretty common for almost everyone. It’s not easy to go from seeing your parents and siblings at home everyday to maybe seeing them for a few weeks every couple of months. Feeling homesick isn’t something that is going to go away all at once, but as you settle into college life you will notice it a little less.

Some of the best ways to deal with homesickness include surrounding yourself with new friends, finding a club or organization that your passionate about and making the most of getting to know your new state. The more you can keep your mind on your new experiences, the easier it will be.

Danie Roberts, a junior at Lasell College, lived in a small town her whole life and was worried about the distance. “I was so scared I would never be able to see my family because of school and the distance, but now being out-of-state is normal to me,” she says. “If you’re worried about missing home, don’t back out just because it’s too far. Your dream school and education is worth it. I’m incredibly happy I moved out-of-state and decided to stay.” Even though it will be a little tough at first, you will more than likely be thankful that you took the plunge. Of course, where your family is will always be home, but who says that your second home can’t be just as great?

6. Your friends at home will forget about you

It can be hard to be the only one from your friend group going away for college, but you shouldn’t let that keep you from going. Your best friends want the best for you even if that means that you'll be away from them. Just because staying in state is a good fit for some of your friends, it doesn't mean that it's the best option for you. Even though they can't be there in person, don't forget that they are just a phone call or text away. Group messages are a super easy way to make sure that you and your home squad keep in touch throughout the semester. Before you leave home for your first semester, make sure to grab your favorite pictures of you and your friends to decorate your room. Not only will it make your room feel more like home, but it's a great daily reminder of the awesome memories you share with your friends at home.

"I have pictures plastered on my walls that remind me every day of all the things my friends and I have gone through together," says Moira McCarty, a junior at LeMoyne College. "Even when I get wrapped up in college life, the pictures are a great little reminder of how much I love and miss them."

Before you come home, make sure to schedule a few days where you and your besties can meet up without other family obligations getting in the way. Absence really does make the heart grow fonder and plus, you will have tons of cool, never before heard stories to share with your BFFs.

Sure you’re going to miss being a locker away from your BFF or being able to drive to your friend’s house after class, but as cliché as it sounds you will find a new squad once you get to college.

7. Tuition will be really expensive

Why students are punished for choosing to go to a school other than where they live, we have no idea. The best advice we can give for this one is scholarships, scholarships and oh, did we mention scholarships?

From describing your dream ice cream flavor to writing an essay about how expensive college can be, there are so many opportunities for scholarship money out there – not to mention the scholarship money that you can get from your actual school. It’s never too late to start applying.

8. You’ll miss your pet

Okay, you can put on a brave face and say that you’re not going to miss your parents or siblings, but you can’t tell us that you’re totally fine with leaving your pet behind? While bringing your pet to college with you is a possibility, there are definitely pros and cons to this.

If you’re missing your pet at school, you can always ask one of your parents to put them on Skype or FaceTime – they’ll probably be happy to see your face too. It might also help to see if your family could give you updates, even a random story could make your day. Keeping lots of pictures of your pet around your room is also a great way to feel a little more connected to your pet while you’re away.

Going to school out of state is easier said than done, but don't let your fears prevent you from potentially awesome opportunities. Embracing the challenge will only make you a more independent, well-rounded collegiette.

Everything We Know So Far About the Berlin Truck Attack

Twelve people were killed and 48 people were injured by a large truck this past Monday night in a Berlin Christmas market. Following the event on Monday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told media that it was being investigated as a terrorist attack.

The German police are still searching for the driver of the truck, who apparently fled the scene after the crash. According to The Guardian, police are looking for a Tunisian man.

An ISIS news affiliate, the Amaq News Agency, informed readers that the perpetrator of the attack was “a soldier of the Islamic State,” but authorities have yet to find any evidence suggesting ISIS was directly involved in the attack. If there is a connection to the Islamic State, it was likely only one of motivation, similar to the attack at Ohio State in November. Often, ISIS takes responsibility for an attack even when the person was not involved with ISIS in any tangible way.

On Tuesday night, a man that had been arrested at the scene of the incident was released from police custody because there was not enough proof of his involvement, according to CNN.

One of the victims of the attack was a man found dead in the truck itself, but it remains unclear whether he was involved or if the truck had been taken over by one person, the attacker. The man had been shot, and no gun was found at the scene.

Since Tuesday, the police released the name of a new suspect, Anis Amri, a name that was found on documents in the truck. According to media reports, Amri is a 24-year-old native of Tunisia.

German officials asked that the media exercise caution in reporting on Amri and others involved in the attack. “I ask for your [the media’s] understanding not to issue any speculation about this person,” said German interior minister Thomas de Maizière in a statement. Supposed information about Amri’s life has already begun to be uncovered and reported on, however.

In late November, an alert had been issued by the U.S. State Department warning travelers to Europe of potential terrorist attacks occurring over the holiday season. “Credible information indicates the Islamic State...and their affiliates continue to plan terrorist attacks in Europe, with a focus on the upcoming holiday season,” the statement said.

The Christmas market, otherwise busy during the holiday season, has apparently only been occupied by members of the press since the attack.

This Colorist Uses Nutella as Hair Dye & It’s Nuts

What if I told you to kiss your hair dye goodbye? What if I told you you that you no longer have to worry about that concerning chemical smell and burn? What if I told you that the solution could be found right in your kitchen cupboard (potentially with a spoon still left inside of it from last night)?

Abed & Samer, a salon based in the United Arab Emirates, offers a Nutella hair treatment. The hazelnut spread is mixed with condensed milk (this sounds like it could also double as a dessert!) to create a gorgeous brown color.

Beauty blogger goddess Huda Kattan, from Huda Beauty, documented the entire process on her Instagram account. The stylist used the concoction to transform a client’s golden locks into a hazelnut-brown tone.

In a recent interview with Metro, hairstylist Abed Allahitani, estimated that the Nutella dye should last two to three weeks when used to create a caramel hue, and even longer for a darker shade. While the longevity of the dye might not be comparable to a chemical dye, on the positive side, the chocolate smell might linger around until the time that you’re due for a touch-up!

Would you ditch the boxed dye for this new hair trend? Or will you stick to using Nutella to stress-eat during exam season?

The Judge in Brock Turner's Rape Case Will Not Face Penalties for Light Sentence

Aaron Persky, judge in the Stanford rape case who sentenced Brock Turner, convicted rapist, to only six months in jail has been cleared of charges of misconduct he was facing for his treatment of the trial.

Persky’s conduct was reviewed by the California Commission on Judicial Performance, which announced on Monday that he would not receive any penalties, according to NBC News. "The commission has concluded that there is not clear and convincing evidence of bias, abuse of authority, or other basis to conclude that Judge Persky engaged in judicial misconduct warranting discipline," said the commission.

Just for a little memory refresher here, Brock Turner forced himself on a passed out woman he encountered outside of a party. Turner only stopped raping her when two passersby called out to him, shouting “What the fuck are you doing? She’s unconscious.”

Turner then faced multiple felony charges“including assault with intent to rape...and sexually penetrating an unconscious person with a foreign object.” He was found guilty. He was sentenced to six months in prison for charges that can add up to a maximum of 14 years, for which prosecutors were asking for six years. After all this, he was released from prison only halfway through his sentence.

And people think rape culture isn’t real.

Persky’s handling of the case was condemned by many, including one of the case’s jurors themselves. Persky himself was a former athlete at Stanford, leading to accusations that he acted in a highly biased manner toward Turner.

During the trial, Persky reasoned that Turner did not deserve harsh punishment because of his young age and otherwise spot-free history of assaulting women. Great. “Extraordinary circumstances” saved Brock Turner from facing the reality of his crimes or taking responsibility for them.

These circumstances? His whiteness, his maleness, his elite educated status, his athleticism and, finally, the fact that Judge Aaron Persky shares all of these traits.

An entire website was created devoted to recalling Persky, which shows on its main page the invasive questions that were asked of the victim during the trial. A Change.org petition also currently exists, with over one hundred thousand signatures, calling for his recall. Even Joe Biden was outraged by the trial and the repeated harms done to the victim.

Hopefully Persky will, at minimum, take a long look at his errors in this case and recognize that his gender bias contributed to the continued traumatization of a rape survivor. This simply cannot keep happening.

When MAC Cosmetics first announced in July that they were creating a collection inspired by Latin music icon Selena Quintanilla, makeup and music enthusiasts alike were understandably excited. Fans couldn’t wait to get their hands on the limited edition makeup that they had been begging the makeup company to create for ages, and they didn’t fall through the day that the products went on sale. Within minutes, the collection sold out, making it one of 2016’s most sought after beauty collections.

To those of you who weren’t lucky enough to score something from the coveted MAC x Selena collection, fear not… because MAC has just promised to restock the entire collection! The makeup giant announced on Monday that the entire collection, with the exception of the Liquid Eye Liner in Boot Black, will be available in the United States and Canada very soon. Mark your calendars: on December 28th, the collection will restock on the brand’s own website, and in their stores on December 29.

Belk, Bloomingdale's, Dillard's, Hudson Bay Company, Macy's, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue will also all be restocking the collection, which only heightens your chances of snagging something from the exclusive line.

MAC also promises to improve their online shopping experience before the release date. They have put some regulations in place to increase the chances that everyone who wants a piece of the collection will get one. Customers will only be able to purchase a limited number of each product, in order to keep things fair. You will only be able to purchase three units of each product in-store, and two online.

Lace up your running shoes, hydrate yourself and prepare for a fight the day this collection comes out, because it is sure to sell out quickly once again. Good luck!

This is Why the FBI Reopened Hillary Clinton's Email Case

Following the news that Hillary Clinton believes Russian hacks and FBI director James B. Comey’s letter about emails led to her loss in the presidential election, the FBI has released an affidavit that gives some insight into why they decided to reopen the infamous case only a couple of weeks ahead of election day. The affidavit was filed in order to request the search of a laptop belonging to Anthony Weiner, a disgraced former politician, and his wife Huma Abedin, one of Clinton's close aides. The New York Times reports that because Abedin talked to Clinton daily over email, the FBI thought there might be emails containing classified information on the laptop. It was as simple as that.

Abedin’s emails emerged through an entirely different case investigating the possibility of her husband Anthony Weiner sending inappropriate texts to a minor. The couple shared the computer that Weiner used for these messages, so investigators figured that relevant messages from Clinton would also be on the same laptop. Emails being on the computer would have been prohibited because, as the affidavit points out, it “was never authorized for the storage or transmission of classified…information.”

For many Clinton supporters, this news still isn’t enough to justify Comey’s explosive letter to Congress on Oct. 28, which many people think stopped Clinton from building the momentum necessary to win the election. The FBI didn't announce that Clinton had been cleared a second time until Nov. 6, only two days before the election. Her lawyer, David E. Kendall, remarked, “As the sole basis for this warrant, the FBI put forward the same evidence the bureau concluded in July was not sufficient to bring a case—the affidavit offered no additional evidence to support any different conclusion.”

The affidavit reveals that a thorough investigation of the laptop is permitted, including keyword searches that would reveal if anything on the computer’s storage is related to the investigation. Officials even have the permission to recover “’deleted,’ ‘hidden,’ or encrypted data.” Now that the affidavit has been released, there just seem to be more questions than ever about how much this investigation impacted the election and how necessary it was. This probably won't be the last we'll be hearing about these emails.

We’ve anxiously awaited the reveal of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynold’s second child’s name ever since the little one was born in September. Us Weekly can now confirm that the pair's youngest daughter is named Ines. The jury is still out on the correct pronunciation so guess there's still some mystery surrounding the baby girl.

We got our first peek at the Reynolds girls just last week at Ryan's Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. While dad was being honored, big sis James really stole the show. She even snatched a microphone from Reynolds' hands to wave wildly at the crowd. She's clearly ready for the family biz.

Ines, on the other hand, was chill as could be—like she'd been attending events like this her whole life.

Let’s just hope baby Ines isn’t left without her BFF when Reynolds is forced to give up James to honor a promise he made before she was even born:

Lena Dunham Apologizes for Saying She Wishes She'd Had an Abortion, Calls It a 'Distasteful Joke'

Earlier this week, Lena Dunham made a comment that she wishes she'd had an abortion, and much of the internet is ready to drag her for it.

In her podcast, Dunham recalls a time when a woman asked her to share her abortion story while she was advocating for reproductive rights outside of a Planned Parenthood clinic. Dunham made it clear that she had not had an abortion and was simply promoting the idea that women should have the right to choose. She concludes the anecdote by saying, "Now I can say that I still haven’t had an abortion, but I wish I had."

After much backlash, Dunham has taken back her statement, calling it a “distasteful joke.” Dunham went to Instagram to clarify the intent of her podcast, explaining that it was meant to discuss reproductive choice in America and bodily autonomy.

My latest podcast episode was meant to tell a multifaceted story about reproductive choice in America, to explain the many reasons women do or don't choose to have children and what bodily autonomy really means. I'm so proud of the medley of voices in the episode. I truly hope a distasteful joke on my part won't diminish the amazing work of all the women who participated. My words were spoken from a sort of "delusional girl" persona I often inhabit, a girl who careens between wisdom and ignorance (that's what my TV show is too) and it didn't translate. That's my fault. I would never, ever intentionally trivialize the emotional and physical challenges of terminating a pregnancy. My only goal is to increase awareness and decrease stigma. I take reproductive choice in America more seriously than I take literally anything else, and therefore own full responsibility for any words I speak that don't convey this truth clearly. I know plenty of people will never like a thing that leaves my lips, mea culpas or no, but this apology is for the women who have placed their trust in me. You mean everything to me. My life is and always will be devoted to reproductive justice and freedom. You know how in some households you curse and have to put money in a jar? Well in mine, if you mess up your pro-choice messaging you have to give a sizable donation to abortion funds (https://abortionfunds.org/need-abortion) in New York, Texas and Ohio I look forward to fighting with you all for the next four years and beyond.

Dunham apologized, saying, “My words were spoken from a sort of ‘delusional girl’ persona I often inhabit, a girl who careens between wisdom and ignorance (that's what my TV show is too) and it didn't translate. That's my fault. I would never, ever intentionally trivialize the emotional and physical challenges of terminating a pregnancy.”

We’re glad that she took the time to apologize for her words, but we're not sure how this qualifies as a "distasteful joke." No matter your stance on reproductive rights, having an abortion is something that changes many women’s lives and should be respected as such.

Christina Grimmie's Family Files Lawsuit Against the Venue Where She Was Killed

Christina Grimmie’s family is suing AEG Live, the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra Plaza Foundation—which owns the venue where she was fatally shot—and the security company that worked the event.

In June, Grimmie was shot and killed by Kevin Loibl after one of her concerts. Loibl was an obsessive fan who apparently went as far as dieting and getting hair transplants and laser eye surgery to look more physically attractive when he met Grimmie. He shot himself at the scene after killing Grimmie.

Our hearts are breaking for the Grimmie family. The family is suing on the grounds of “wrongful death and negligent infliction of emotional distress,” according to Billboard

Additionally, they’d like to receive compensation for Grimmie’s projected income and reimbursement for funeral and medical expenses. The family is hoping that the case will go to trial.

We’re still saddened by the tragic loss of the talented singer. We hope that the Grimmie family receives justice and finds peace in this difficult time.

More Than 100 Democrats in Congress Are Asking Donald Trump to Allow Federal Funding for Abortion

He may not be taking office until January, but President-elect Donald Trump is still getting plenty of advice from Congress on what to consider once his term begins. According to BuzzFeed News, over 100 Democrats in Congress wrote to Trump requesting that he get rid of the Hyde Amendment, which is a federal law excluding “any federal government or taxpayer money from funding abortions.” The exceptions to the law are cases of rape, incest, and extreme health concerns.

The letter was likely written in response to a letter from Trump in September, promising that he would make the Hyde Amendment permanent law (it currently must be renewed every year). In this message, Trump announced his plans to defund Planned Parenthood, send its resources to community health centers and permeate the Hyde Amendment so citizens don’t have to pay for abortions.

The Democrats in Congress have asked Trump to eliminate the Hyde Amendment from his fiscal year budget request for 2018. Their letter pointed out that the current restrictions on abortion coverage limit the medical coverage of millions of women nationally, especially poor women and women of color. “Approximately one in four Medicaid-eligible women who would have had an abortion if funds were available must carry the pregnancy to term,” the letter reads. “The impact of such a denial can have long-term, devastating effects on a woman and her family’s economic future.”

The EACH Woman Act (Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance) has been crucial in fighting against the Hyde Amendment, with representatives trying to pass it since 2015. "Whether she has private or government-funded health insurance, every woman should have coverage for a full range of pregnancy-related care, including abortion, " the EACH Woman Act's website reads.  "When health programs for women with low incomes cover birth control and abortion—not just childbirth—and people can plan if and when to have children, it’s good for them and for society as a whole."

At a time like this, more progressive movements like the EACH Woman Act are key to ensuring that all kinds of people will still be represented in the United States' new government. Although Trump may not have reacted publicly to the Democratic request yet, hopefully he's reasonable enough to work with the Democrats to help equal health coverage happen for all.

YouTube Star Adam Saleh Says Delta Kicked Him Off Flight for Speaking Arabic

Adam Saleh, a YouTuber known for videos of pranks, is claiming that he was removed from a Delta flight for speaking Arabic during a phone call to his mother, USA Today reports.

Saleh posted video on his twitter account of Delta officials coming to escort him off of his flight.

"I'm about to cry right now," Saleh says in the video, repeatedly saying that he is being kicked off the plane for speaking a different language. He turns the camera around to show several passengers looking uncomfortable, though some can be seen waving goodbye to him. One non-white man defended him, demanding to know why Saleh was being removed.

There was immediately backlash against Delta on social media, with Twitter users calling for a boycott and demanding an explanation. Others, though, were skeptical of the story. They pointed to Saleh’s previous prank videos, including one in which he claims to have snuck himself onto a flight that security footage later showed him legally boarding.

A representative for Saleh says that the incident is legitimate, that his mother doesn’t speak English, so when he called her to let her know how long it would take him to be home he used her native language, Arabic. Multiple passengers seated around Saleh allegedly reported feeling uncomfortable by the call, some of which began swearing at and threatening him. The New York Times spoke with other passengers on the flight who corroborated Saleh's story.

Delta issued this statement in response to the incident: “Two customers were removed from this flight and later rebooked after a disturbance in the cabin resulted in more than 20 customers expressing their discomfort. We're conducting a full review to understand what transpired. We are taking allegations of discrimination very seriously; our culture requires treating others with respect.” Our culture, but not our sense of decency, apparently.

Saleh has been detailing his struggle to get back home to New York on his twitter.

This is for certain: If this incident was real, it’s just another example of how twisted and racist our current society is. If it was another prank, Saleh needs to learn the difference between entertainment and taking it too far. Either way, something needs to change.

The BAFTAs Are Making Diversity A Requirement to Qualify for Awards

There is no doubt that minorities are underrepresented in the film industry. So the British Academy of Film and Television (BAFTA) is making a statement to move the industry towards equality.

In order to ensure diversity in the projects that they honor, BAFTA is implementing four new diversity standards: on-screen representation, themes and narratives; project leadership and creative practitioners; industry access and opportunities; and opportunities for diversity in audience development. This means that the deciding factor isn’t necessarily the content being produced—who is producing it, who has access to it and who the product is reaching will carry more weight.

If films do not meet at least two of the diversity standards, they cannot be nominated for Outstanding British Film or Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer.

BAFTA is hoping to make a permanent change in regards to the underrepresentation of minorities in the industry. Consider this a clapback to the Academy and #OscarsSoWhite.

People of all races, genders, orientations, socioeconomic classes and bodies have every right to be fairly represented in this industry. So props to BAFTA for pushing us in the right direction! Hopefully this means that as we move forward, there will be more equal opportunity in all aspects of society, not just in what we watch on our screens.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are even better gift-givers than the real Santa Claus. (Yes, we know Santa isn't real, but you know what we mean.) Hospital visits from celebs never get old, and Cosmo caught some big grins from the two as they visited the Children's Hospital Los Angeles yesterday to spread some holiday cheer.

Such a picturesque Mr. and Mrs. Claus would make even the Grinch's heart grow three sizes! Unlike their usual wardrobes full of bells and whistles, Orlando and Katy went with simple, classic costumes to keep the attention on the kids.

This special newborn gets the best baby photo of all time.

We're sure the cheer they spread will last throughout the year.

After all the personal history and tabloid stories between Liam and Miley, it's inspiring to see a young couple learn, grow and share a family Christmas with renewed confidence. Their pure passion for making each other happy is just the kind of holiday cheer that keeps us positive through a wintry whirlwind of stress.

If only we could all bring an A-list hottie home to stave off the family interrogations. In the meantime, we'll party all weekend with cozy loungewear and a messy updo because we can't stop and we won't stop.

After a year filled with many surprising and upsetting breakups, the glimmer of hope that love still exists in Hollywood comes from Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom’s charming relationship.

While the couple initially kept a pretty low profile, they have been more open about their relationship and have been photographed on vacation and shopping dates. But the one sign of ~true love~? How they interact with each other on a day to day basis.

Many know actor Orlando Bloom from his role as Legolas in The Lord of the Rings franchise. Bloom decided to dedicate a throwback collage to his old character, so he posted pictures on Instagram featuring the gorgeous blond locks and blue contacts he sported for the movies.

Being the hilarious girlfriend that she is, singer Katy Perry mocked her beau in the comments. She pointed out, “You look like Jen Aniston on the lower right babe.”

Please never break up. Their Instagram banter is perfect.

Ellen Pompeo Calls for Boycott of A&E Over KKK Series

Questionable TV is everywhere these days, but A&E has hit a new low in its programming. Its newest docuseries, Generation KKK, provides an inside look at people within KKK-associated families who are trying to leave the society. Seeing as the last time the KKK was talked about this much was when its newspaper endorsed Donald Trump for president, people are understandably angry about the series, and Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo is among them.

Pompeo made her disgust known through a series of tweets, shaming A&E for “giving ignorance a platform” and asking for a boycott of the network.

Pompeo also pointed out the bad timing of the series and how allowing such ignorance to rise ultimately led to Trump’s presidential win. Obviously, the show premiering on Jan. 10, just over a week before Trump's inauguration, isn't a great sign.

The Twitter account of A&E eventually noticed the actress's remarks and clarified that the show's goal is to highlight those wanting to leave the KKK. Pompeo, of course, fired back to this right away.

She's not the only one annoyed by the show. When the New York Times' Twitter promoted its review of the series, readers had a lot to say

While the public outrage hasn't seemed to delay or cancel A&E's plans to run the series, Pompeo had an awesome idea that I'm happy to back up any day.

Amen to that, girl.
