The 18 Stages of Your Weekly Sunday Procrastination

$

0

Nobody is mentally prepared for the end of the weekend and the beginning of a week of heavy concentration and minimal fun. Unless you’re an Olivia Pope-level responsible worker, you’re probably someone like us who leaves all of your weekend work for Sunday. Although this may seem like a good idea on Saturday, we all have the initial panic Sunday morning when we realize what we’ve done. To make you feel a little more supported and a little less alone, we have heavily researched and compiled a list of the typical stages of your Sunday procrastination. Keep calm and procrastinate on.

1. You press your snooze button a minimum of 10 times so you don’t have to wake up and face your responsibilities.

2. When you do eventually roll out of bed, you take your sweet time brushing your teeth and getting ready for the productive day ahead of you.

3. You call up your designated study buddies and pick from your variety of study locations.

4. You eventually settle on the cute downtown coffee shop—as if the library ever stood a chance.

5. You don’t hesitate to order the most elaborate drink on the menu to numb the pain of all the work you're about to accomplish.

6. Once you have your caffeine fix, it’s time to break out the textbooks and get to working.

7. After you’ve checked every outlet of social media you can think of, of course.

8. You may even decide that this is the perfect time to catch up with your grandma who’s been dying for a call from you.

9. When you finally do crack open the textbooks, you decide that studying with Netflix will help with your multitasking skills.

10. You inevitably break out into hysterical laughter at whatever show you’re watching (we recommend New Girl), and finally close the tab to try and focus.

11. As you slowly start chipping away at your elaborate to-do list, you begin to question the value of your college education.

12. Your much-more-responsible friends have already finished their work, so you decide to take this party back to your dorm room where you can get reacquainted with your bed.

13. As much as you try, you just can’t help but let yourself slip into a deep, replenishing nap. You’ll work so much better when you’re fully rested, right?

14. You wake up only to discover that it’s dark out and you have barely done any of your homework.

15. After a prompt breakdown and call to your mother, you pull yourself together.

16. You sit at your desk and find that your work actually didn’t take as long as you had anticipated.

17. After an exhausting day of ignoring your responsibilities, you have finally earned the right to go back to sleep.

18. You pat yourself on the back for being a motivated and hardworking student, ready for whatever this week may bring.

11 Throwback Halloween Costumes Every ’90s Girl Will Love

$

Everyone loves a #tbt, and even though Halloween this year is on a Monday, it’s still the perfect chance for an old-school reference as a costume. Here are some Halloween costumes every ’90s girl will love!

1. Lizzie McGuire

Lizzie McGuire is too classic not to be your Halloween costume! If only your closet was as cool as hers back in the day. All you need are some super-bright, patterned bell-bottom pants and an equally vibrant top. Crimp your hair (if you still own one of those ancient artifacts), throw on a thick headband, and you’re good to go. You can even get two friends to join you as Gordo and Miranda because where would Lizzie be without her awesome sidekicks?

2. The Powerpuff Girls

Sugar, spice and everything nice. These little girls were kicking butt back in the ‘90s and still dealing with all the troubles of being a kid (how old were they actually?).

These costumes couldn’t be easier. All you need are some white tights, some black shoes and a pink, green or blue dress. You can fashion a black belt out of felt, and you’re ready to fight crime and the forces of evil!

3. Rugrats

These babies were the ultimate tight-knit crew and will make the perfect Halloween costume for a group. Just put together some makeshift diapers out of towels or fabric. If you dress up as Chuckie, you’re gonna need to get a wig for his classic hairdo. However, for everyone else, all you really need is a bald cap, a bow or pigtails. You can decorate oversized shirts with felt in the appropriate patterns. You can even bring bottles with you if you so choose. Who run the world? Babies.

4. Saved by the Bell

Going out as the Bayside crew is also a great option. It’s all about bright patterns, big shoulder pads and even bigger hair. Hit up Goodwill for some oversized sweaters, mom jeans and tank tops. The tighter and higher the pants, the better. If you can find an old-school cellphone, you may be in the running for best throwback costume of the weekend.

5. The Rocket Power Gang

If you have a group and are trying to be a total skater bro all night, this is the costume for you. Otto needs some crazy hair, a headband, a yellow shirt and red shorts. Reggie needs a purple wig (or temporary hair dye), a magenta shirt with a yellow rocket decal attached and camo pants. Twister needs a white shirt with a blue tank layered over it and khaki cargo shorts. Squid needs an oversized yellow shirt with a red “N” on it, glasses, jeans and a makeshift shark helmet. Your group is gonna be riding around the streets with the ultimate old-school swag.

6. Mario Kart

This is another fun group costume. You and your friends can dress up as your favorite characters. Overalls, appropriately colored T-shirts, hats and a mustache work for Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi. Try a pink dress for Princess Peach or a yellow dress for Princess Daisy along with tiaras if you want. And Toad just needs a toadstool hat and a blue shirt. You can basically turn any of the characters into a costume!

Each of you then can paint your own box “car” with balloons attached, and you’re ready to hit the speedways this Halloween.

7. Spice Girls

People of the world, SPICE UP YOUR LIFE… with this Halloween costume! You have your choice between Scary Spice, Sporty Spice, Baby Spice, Ginger Spice and Posh Spice. Make sure to wear some serious platform shoes. Then, follow each of the girls’ style. Scary Spice requires the signature crazy hair and some sort of animal-print dress. You can’t be Baby Spice without the pigtails. Sporty is the comfiest with her athletic gear (swishy pants and a crop top not optional). Ginger Spice always rocks the Union Jack dress, and Posh should have a tight, short LBD.

8. Britney Spears throughout the ages

It’s Britney, b*tch. The pop princess will give you multiple options for costumes, whether you want to go solo or as a group.

“…Baby One More Time” is always a crowd-pleaser. All you need are braided pigtails, a tied-off cardigan and button down, a schoolgirl skirt, high socks and Mary Janes. If you can somehow find a red latex bodysuit, you’ve got a solid costume for “Oops!... I Did It Again.” Whatever you decide on, don’t forget a fake headset and a lot of sass.

9. Legends of the Hidden Temple

This may actually be the simplest costume ever! We all loved Legends of the Hidden Temple; the only thing we wanted to do more than be on this game show was to get slimed.

For this costume, you need the shirt in the appropriate colors with your chosen symbol stapled on the front. Then, throw on a helmet and some knee and elbow pads. As a refresher, the teams were the Red Jaguars, Blue Barracudas, Green Monkeys, Orange Iguanas, Purple Parrots and Silver Snakes. But let’s be real, the Blue Barracudas were the best.

10. Troll Dolls

When’s the last time you saw a Troll doll? Seriously, think back to those naked little dolls that fell somewhere between creepy and cute.

This is such an easy costume; all you need is a nude leotard or dress. Pull your hair up around a water bottle stationed on top of your head. Load up on the hairspray, throw on some temporary hair dye and you’re a troll doll! It’s as simple as that. And when else would you get to parade around looking completely naked? Answer: basically never, unless you’re at a nudist colony.

11. Romy and Michele

This movie was a classic! If you can scrounge up some metallic dresses, you’re seriously so lucky and on your way to costume perfection. Hot-glue a feather boa to the hem of your dress, and you’re ready to take on the ultimate high school reunion this Halloween. Add the most blinged-out jewelry and accessories you can find. A giant cellphone would be a great touch, too.

Whatever you decide, you really can’t go wrong with a throwback costume. Everyone loves a classic, so you’ll be a hit this Halloween!

No, Comedy Isn't An Excuse to Be Racist

Popular Indian actress Tannishtha Chatterjee walked out of her roast held by 'Comedy Nights Bachao'for a good reason. Chatterjee was there to promote her new film Parched and was fully prepared to be roasted for pure entertainment value.

What she didn’t know was that roasters would focus on her skin tone for practically the entire skit. Chatterjee wasn’t feeling the jokes and she left with quite a lot to say to the roasters. She was more than disappointed when all they could come up with were jokes about her skin tone.

Ironically, Parched challenges the bias that exists in the Indian community relating skin tones to class.  Check out her Facebook post below that knocks it out of the park.

Chatterjee joins the ranks of other strong women who aren’t afraid to clap back at haters and racists. The channel that runs the show apologized to the actress and she was unimpressed with that as well, saying, "thanks for this post. But this is not abt me. It’s abt a prejudice. I wish they made fun of me." All she wanted was a fair roasting but instead, she got singed with old stereotypes and stale jokes.

How She Got There: Elyse Oleksak, Owner of Bantam Bagels

Name: Elyse Oleksak
Age: 30
Job Title: Owner, Bantam Bagels
College Name/Major: Columbia University, Sociology

Twitter Handle:@bantambagels

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

Elyse Oleksak: There is definitely not such a thing as a typical day. As a business owner, you are everything. Your current job is from managing people to forecast planning to sales and marketing, expansion planning, publicity—we do every single last thing, or we at least make the decisions in every area.

What inspired you and Nick to leave your jobs at Wall Street to start your company?

EO: I think what inspired us was a really, really great idea. When you really boil it down, being an entrepreneur, if you’re going to just pour and dedicate your entire life, every minute of your day, into one thing, you really have to believe in that one thing. You have to just feel so strongly that the world needs your idea, and if you don’t make it come to [fruition], someone else might and you can’t miss this opportunity. Nick came up with this idea, and we both thought it was so fabulous that we couldn’t pass it up.

What is the best part of your job?

EO: I think the best part of my job is, for the first time, truly, working hard towards something that I 100 percent believe in and feel invested in. Working hard doesn’t feel like work when you’re the one leading it. You know, it’s not an assignment I have to finish; it’s something I want to do to move my future ahead.

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

EO: I think a mistake we made early on was not being cogent in our branding on everything we did. We were more focused on the business side and our product, without a full understanding of the way we were being represented and how that effects our growth overall. In the beginning, our packaging was a little bit sloppier, we had different logos out in the world—we just didn’t have a consistent presence and I think that was a learning point when we went on the shelves of Starbucks, and we’re now launching in grocery, of how much more impactful we have been since streamlining our brand.

What was your experience on Shark Tank like?

EO: Shark Tank is just as intense and exciting as everybody says it is and as it looks on TV. It was an incredible opportunity for us. We sort of grew up Shark Tank watchers since season one, before it was even Emmy-award winning. We were definitely inspired by the [entrepreneurial] culture that it created. We did not take the opportunity lightly. We put together a study guide, we spent hours and hours watching every single episode, we wrote down every question and quizzed each other on how we would answer it, we had our study guide on numbers, cut our financials in every way possible, and we memorized everything. I think we studied harder than either of us did for the SATs. We went in there so ready—we even had signals of how to respond, like different nods for what we’d accept so we didn’t have to step out. Preparation was certainly key, and it showed because the Sharks responded well and we got a deal and it was so exciting. It had a monumental impact on the business—first, in having the partnership with Lori, and it’s also given us support from Shark Tank watchers. It’s not something to be undervalued. Reinventing the bagel in New York City—it’s such a bold thing to do and we knew that. Even though we believed in our product, we had people who were doubtful and who wanted to try our bagel just to prove us wrong. But once you’re on Shark Tank and it shows people a behind-the-scenes look and what goes into the business, it gave us a support network of people rooting for us. It’s been tremendous.

How do you deal with criticism in the industry?

EO: I think we deal with criticism all the time. Normally as a business owner, you don’t hear the positive—just the negative feedback. When you go to a restaurant, you might tell your mom or your friend that you really liked that restaurant, but you’re not going to call the business and tell them. You might come back, and that is showing them that you liked it. When you’re not happy, you’re going to make sure they know. There’s no shortage of getting constructive feedback; it’s something you have to learn and develop a tough skin over time. We look for patterns or anything we hear multiple times, and how we can improve on that. You definitely have to sift through people who are just using feedback platforms for the sake of expressing their voice versus real constructive criticism that helps move the product forward. We’ve never believed that we were done, or had a golden product to never be improved on. We listen to customers all the time, whether it’s feedback on flavors, and so we’ll tinker around with a few different things. You certainly have to be ready for feedback and criticism at every angle.

6 Unique Ways to Actually Achieve Work-Life Balance

$

Nobody said that achieving a healthy work-life balance was easy. We get it—you’ve tried everything, from doing yoga to reading more, but nothing seems to work as you try to find the balance in your life that you so crave. If you find yourself being engulfed by your job and losing your sanity, we’re here to help with a few tips that actually work to help you get one step closer to work-life balance. Trust us, there are some tips on this list that you haven’t tried before.

1. Track how you’re spending your time

There’s a strong chance that a portion of your work and life stressors are self-induced. Are the decisions you make about how you divvy up your day having a positive effect on you? Do you procrastinate more than you’d like to admit? Maybe you’re not using your time wisely.

To avoid problems with time management, take a week to log your daily activity in a journal. This includes everything from times during the day you actually get work done to what you do once you get home.

Once Sydnee Lyons, a second year graduate student at Florida Atlantic University, realized that she dwelled on work during her time off after examining her own routine, she made a change. “I like to set aside one day a week where I don't look at work- or school-related things," she says. "This really helps because I tend to always obsess about my to-do lists and I'll find myself working on something during my downtime. By designating one day that's completely work-free, I force myself to avoid any of that.”

At the end of the week, look at patterns and determine what works for you and what doesn’t. Maybe you’ll find that you have more time after work than you realize, or that there are certain times in the day when you’re most productive. All of this information is valuable, and will help you become more organized with your time.

2. Make sure your finances are in check

You’re probably thinking, “What does this have to do with work-life balance?” Your stress level and inability to achieve balance could be caused by a lack of organization when it comes to your finances.

Like mentioned previously, logging your habits can help you learn a lot about yourself and how you can improve aspects of your daily living. Try taking a tally of how you spend your money in a single week—are you overspending on food and fun activities when you should be putting funds towards student loans and monthly rent? If you’re not the most financially savvy, there are a bunch of budget-tracking apps that are helpful such as Mint, Penny and Goodbudget. These apps can help take the stress and tediousness out of watching everything you spend in a month.

By being more conscious of your spending, you will be more responsible when it comes to the “life” half of work-life balance. You’ll have funds for the activities that you truly enjoy rather than finding yourself broke at the end of every month.

3. Spend your vacation time wisely—and treat it like an actual vacation!

When was the last time you actually took time off? We’re not talking about a staycation, but a real vacation.

In today’s society, we’re so afraid to use all of our allotted vacation days out of fear of appearing lazy. However, we all need some R&R on the path to career success!

At the beginning of the new year, try to pre-plan your time off so that it is spread out throughout the year. You will feel more balanced if you know that you have time off to look forward to on a somewhat regular basis (such as every few months) as opposed to taking off all your vacation at once (but if you want to do that, you do you!).

Marissa Russo, a 2015 graduate working in arts administration and education, forced herself to create a separation from work during vacation by removing work email from her phone. “I think this is a good tip for people to do over long weekends, holidays, or vacations, because you really need that time to rejuvenate and relax, free of work!” she says. “I definitely had the most relaxing and enjoyable weekend I've had since starting this job!”

4. Create a support system, and be the same for others

As hard as you try, it’s nearly impossible to find complete balance on your own. Everybody needs a support system, whether that’s friends, family or coworkers, in order to keep you in check.

Make a conscious effort to be social during the day, whether that means inviting coworkers to eat lunch with you or spending time watching The Bachelor with your roommates after a long day. You’ll find that increased social activity can boost your mood, and you won’t feel as alone when you find yourself the most stressed.

By the same token, make sure that you’re being a good friend to others. We all struggle with work-life balance to some extent! Be a good listener, and with karma you’ll find that your friends will be more open to being a support system for you as well.

5. Do something you enjoy every day

As the saying goes, “It’s a good day to have a good day.” If you don’t like your job or you feel an overwhelming sense of anxiety on a regular basis, find something you enjoy and incorporate it into your day, no matter how small. Even if you DO like your job and like to spend a lot of time at the office, you still need time for yourself.

Alaina Leary, a social media editor, practices this mantra in her own life. She says, “I'll be working all day and going to class at night, but I'll still make even just 30 minutes to an hour to do something I enjoy. I'll usually read, sometimes I'll take a walk. It just depends how much free time I've got!”

Prepare your favorite meal and bring it to work with you. Find a creative outlet outside of work, like taking a painting class or doing a DIY project at home. Bake some cookies with your roommates. No matter the activity, it never hurts to find something enjoyable that takes your mind off of work for a short period of time.

6. Accept that you’re human

This is probably the most important, but toughest, lesson to absorb. There isn’t a “perfect” way to live your life, and no matter how many hours you put in at work, perfectionist tendencies do more harm than good. By accepting your imperfections, it will be a lot easier to let go of some of the stress that might consume you.

Haleigh Kopinski, who works in social media, realized that there wasn’t a perfect or easy way to conduct her work and personal lives, but by limiting usage of her phone, she could take a small step towards balance. “One way that has really helped me (and my relationship) is leaving my phone at home when I go out to dinner," she says. "At least once a month my boyfriend and I plan a dinner date. During this time, we leave our phones at home or in the car so the distraction is completely removed. It forces us to focus on each other, which isn't happening as often as it should elsewhere.”

By accepting that parts of your work life are out of your control and focusing on small things that you can control like using your phone less often, you'll find the challenge of finding balance less daunting.

The journey towards work-life balance isn’t easy. However, there are small changes you can make like those listed above that are just as effective as obvious life changes, such as increasing physical activity.

Here’s What You Need to Know About Donald Trump’s Tax Returns

Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump has yet to release his tax returns. However, according to The New York Times, Trump’s 1995 tax records indicate that a $916 million loss may have given him grounds to stop paying his federal income taxes for nearly 18 years.

The Times report comes less than one week after Trump and Democratic Nominee Hillary Clinton had their first debate. Those who tuned in saw 90 minutes’ worth of back-and-forth bashes, many of which centered on Trump’s financial history. Although, as CNN reports, the candidate still refuses to make his tax returns public, the information uncovered by the Times has certainly granted us something to grapple with for the next month.

For starters, we now know that the bad business moves Trump made throughout the early 1990s could have worked to his advantage. According to the Times, the $916 million loss Trump reported in 1995 was so hefty that it likely helped him avoid paying taxes on the money he earned from “The Apprentice” and other positions he held over the following 18 years.

How does this work? Basically, U.S. tax law says that if you lose money through your business, you can deduct the amount of your losses from your taxable income. As Vox explains, if Trump made $50 million in 1996, he wouldn't have to pay taxes on it—because of the $916 million loss. And because $916 million is such a massive number, even if Trump continued to make $50 million in income every year, it would take 18 years before he could stop using the loss to get tax breaks. Again, this is all completely legal—but it obviously doesn't look great. Trump's spent his campaign talking about how Americans shouldn't have to pay so much in taxes, but by ducking out on his own contribution, he's forced Americans making a lot less money than him to foot the bill for our country's many social and structural needs.

This information feels like a much-needed first glimpse into Trump’s mysterious tax situation, but The Washington Post points out that publishing it was also a potential violation of federal law. The Times received Trump’s tax return from an anonymous source. Because it then proceeded to publish the documents without his permission, Trump is threatening legal action.

Despite Trump’s love for the law, the Times reports that his campaign responded to its feature with a pretty meaningless statement.

“Mr. Trump is a highly-skilled businessman who has a fiduciary responsibility to his business, his family and his employees to pay no more tax than legally required,” Trump’s campaign said. “That being said, Mr. Trump has paid hundreds of millions of dollars in property taxes, sales and excise taxes, real estate taxes, city taxes, state taxes, employee taxes and federal taxes.”

Hope you’re not tired of the word taxes. We have a feeling you’ll be hearing and seeing a lot more of it between now and Nov. 8.

Colombians Voted 'No' to a Historic Peace Deal Yesterday—Here's Why That's Important

$
0
0

Colombian voters said "no" Sunday to what would have been a groundbreaking peace deal between Colombia and the leftist rebel group, the Armed Revolutionary Forces of Colombia (FARC).

A little over 50 percent of voters voted “No” to reject the peace deal that would have attempted to end half a century years of problems between the country and the rebels, BuzzFeed News reported. According to the BBC, the difference between "yes" and "no" was just 54,000 votes—a tiny percentage of the almost 13 million votes cast.

This was a shock, because polls ahead of time showed that the majority of Colombians supported the peace deal after years of violence. In 2013, the Associated Press reported that 220,000 people had died in the conflict, and that there had been 1,982 massacres between 1980 and 2012. The FARC is a rural guerrilla movement following a Marxist-Leninist ideology, rebelling against the massive inequality that has plagued Colombia for decades. The group was founded in 1962 after the Colombian civil war.

The BBC points out that in areas hardest hit by the war's violence, residents overwhelmingly voted "yes." For example, in one town where more than 100 people had been killed by a FARC bombing, 98 percent voted "yes." But other areas of the country weren't so sure. Many people felt the peace deal voted on this weekend was allowing the rebels to get away with too much, such as reduced sentences for serious war crimes, according to The New York Times.

Leaders said they would keep working toward peace, even after the discouraging vote.

“Tomorrow I will convene the political forces, in particular the ones in favor of ‘no,’ to listen them and determine which path to follow. … I will not give up,” said Colombian President Juan Manuel during his televised speech following the vote. He has also vowed to continue the ceasefire between the two groups.

FARC is also aiming to work towards passing a peace deal. “The FARC-EP maintain their desire for peace and reiterate their disposition to use only words as a weapon to build the future,” FARC leader Timoleon Jimenez said in a statement.

Despite the almost 50/50 vote among Colombians, turnout for the vote was low—Only 38 percent showed up to vote, which BuzzFeed noted could have been connected to Hurricane Matthew.

It is unclear when Colombia and FARC will present a new peace deal to their people, but after years of conflict, they will have to come to an agreement that Colombians can approve of to bring peace to their nation.

This Code Is Helping People Get Away with Racism on Twitter

The trolls of 4chan have teamed up to Tweet their ways around being flagged or banned for filling our newsfeeds with racist remarks.

According to the Star-Telegram, there’s a new lingo that’s leading users of such services as Google, Yahoo and Skype to feel wary of mentioning them on social media. The code comes in response to Jigsaw, a Google program that was put in place to detect—and put a stop to—online harassment. Wired reports that the subsidiary’s Conversation AI software has the ability to zero in on hateful remarks with near-perfect accuracy.

“I want to use the best technology we have at our disposal to begin to take on trolling and other nefarious tactics that give hostile voices disproportionate weight,” Jigsaw founder and president Jared Cohen said.

Those “hostile voices” have certainly made themselves heard. According to BuzzFeed News, a group of 4chan users used the website’s message boards to discuss the idea of developing a code to get around Jigsaw’s efforts—i.e., to be racist without using overt slurs that could be found by a computer. Certain posts have since been deleted, but Twitter has yet to see the last of this scheme. Here’s a look at how it’s playing out on the Tweet screen.

Skype is a coded slur for the Jewish community.

And Google is their stand-in for the n-word.

And this isn't even the first racism "code" on social media this year. Mic points out that so-called "echoes" are another coded version of anti-Semitism that's been around for months now. The ((())) symbol singles out Jewish people, thus subjecting them to digital abuse.

Even worse? According to BuzzFeed and Mic, many of the posts and accounts making use of these codes are pro-Donald Trump for president.

People Are Protesting in Los Angeles After Police Shot and Killed 18-Year-Old Carnell Snell

An 18-year-old black man was shot near his home in Los Angeles on Saturday, making him the third black man killed in five days by the police in Southern California—and people want answers, according to the Associated Press.

Carnell Snell Jr. was a passenger in a vehicle with paper license plates that got pulled over by the LAPD on Saturday afternoon. The driver didn't pull over right away, but when he did, he, Snell and at least one other passenger got out and fled.

While the driver got away from the scene of the crime, Snell was shot while trying to go around the back of his house. People have been protesting all weekend, wanting to know the names of the officers involved and why Snell couldn't have lived.

Earl Ofari Hutchinson of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable told the AP, "We don't want to see a cover-up. We don't want to see a whitewash. We have a family that's grieving. We have a community that's grieving."

An LAPD spokesman told The Los Angeles Times that a handgun had been recovered from the scene of the shooting, but no other information has been released.

"At the end of the day, the cops came and shot my brother. Killed my brother," Trenell Snell, Carnell's 17-year-old sister, told CBS News.

Snell’s death followed the fatal shooting of Alfred Olango by police near San Diego last Tuesday, and the fatal tasering of Reginald Thomas in Pasadena on Friday.

Kim Kardashian's Robbery Was an 'Organized Attack,' Security Expert Says

In a scary turn of events, Kim Kardashian was bound, gagged and robbed at gunpoint in Paris—and while more than $10 million worth of jewelry and several other belongings are gone, Kim is safe and back stateside

The robbery happened around 2:30 a.m. local time at the "No Name Hotel," as it's known to locals. Husband Kanye West owns an apartment in the building. The hotel—actually called l’Hotel de Pourtalès—is often frequented by high-profile celebrities, including Leonardo DiCaprio. Though the hotel is shrouded in secrecy (its website requires a log-in, and information, such as its address, is not listed online), security on the premises is surprising loose. The thieves—reports say there were five—had no problem getting in. They held the concierge up at gunpoint, making him lead them to Kim's residence.

People spoke with a security expert, who says he doesn't believe this was a random attack.

"It wasn't something, like, they were just walking down the street and said, 'Oh, I heard that Kardashian was here. Let's just go in and rob her,'" Christopher Hagon, who has provided security for the Royal Family, says. "This was an organized attacked based on known information."

This guy is always in my shot!

He also says that Kim's active social media presence could have played a role.

"If you're constantly putting information out there, keeping your name in the public eye ... keeping details of your wealth in the public eye then you are ... increasing the chances of a possible attack," he tells People.

In the days leading up to the attack, it was easy to track Kim's movements—just about everything was documented across her social media platforms, as well as by the paparazzi, whose photos revealed that Kim's bodyguard, Pascal Duvier, was accompanying her sisters Kourtney Kardashian and Kendall Jenner while they were out on the town that night. In addition to her whereabouts, her posts revealed the millions in diamonds she had with her.

Of course, this isn't to say she and her team are to blame—celebrity or not, nobody should be subject to this sort of attack—but Hagon says there are things he would've done differently.

"If you really are concerned about your personal security then you've really got to make it as difficult as possible for people to hone in on you as a possible target," he says, adding that he would "bolster [their] security approach accordingly."

Cara Delevingne just debuted her latest tattoo, and we can't keep our eyes off of it. This is probably because her latest ink is a pair of eyes meant to look like they're following you—and it's creepy AF (and oh-so-Cara).

The latest piece of art was revealed through a post by Delevingne's tattoo artist Bang Bang, who shared a video of the fresh tattoo. Maybe it's just us, but we can't help but feel that those eyes are watching us now that we've seen this video.

Delevingne has become well known for her collection of tattoos, which includes a lion, her initials, and even her mom's name. As of September 2015, she had 20. This set of eyes is undoubtedly the creepiest of her display and perfect for the Halloween season. Only she could pull this off!

News Outlets Were Tricked Into Publishing This Fake Story of a Lottery Winner Marrying His Own Granddaughter

If a story seems too ridiculous to be true, it probably is. A story first reported by the Florida Sun Post has been discovered by Mashable to be fake after numerous news outlets, including the New York Post, picked up the story.

The story describes the unlikely marriage of a 68-year-old Florida man to his own granddaughter. The report alleges that after the man’s first marriage ended, his wife moved away with their children and he never saw them again.

Later, the man allegedly won the lottery and became a millionaire, since it seems that when it comes to made up news stories the motto is, “go big or go home.” Feeling great after winning the lottery, the man allegedly decided to get back into dating, and eventually met the 24-year-old woman who would become his wife...Only to find out that they were related while looking at one of his family photo albums together! (She recognized her father—the lottery winner's son—as a child in the picture.)

The story concludes with the couple, who have, of course, asked to remain anonymous, insisting that they have no plans to get a divorce despite this revelation.

Even without the update across the top of the article apologizing for falling for this fake story, the report is pretty fishy. Not only were the couple always referred to anonymously, they also spoke to “reporters” or “journalists” in the original article—vague wording that would never be used in a reputable paper.

Plus, isn’t it just too perfect that after everything he went through with his marriages ending, he won the lottery? And isn’t it hard to believe that they could get past the creepiness of this relationship and want to stay married?

The "Florida Sun Post" was smart, though. The story is sensational enough to drive tons of clicks, while maintaining just enough of a tie to reality to be believable for journalists and readers alike. Recently, Her Campus covered the story of a mother and son who were risking jail time to stay in a relationship—a post that stayed in our "Most Read" section for multiple days.

But there's really no excuse for the lack of research and skepticism that led to this story being published by so many news organizations. Hopefully we'll all learn from this embarrassing moment for journalism!

Local police have confirmed that two North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University students died on Sunday after a shooting that took place at a party off campus, according to WFMY News.

Alisia Dieudonne, a 19-year-old computer science major from Illinois, and Amhad Campbell, 21-year-old agriculture and environmental science systems major from North Carolina, were the victims of the shooting.

The suspect in the shooting arrived at the party uninvited and was asked to leave, then pulled out a gun after a fight broke out.

A vigil was held on campus for the two students on Sunday, which a few hundred of their classmates attended.

The school released a statement on Facebook informing the campus community of their loss and offering conseling services.

Dieudonne's friend, Jaylon Russell offered a heartbreaking account of their last conversation.

"It’s awful because I had seen her yesterday before everything had happened," Russell told WFMY. "I gave her a hug and said, 'I’ll see you whenever I see you.' And to know I won’t see her is horrible."

"I can’t make sense of it," Russell continued. "It’s hard for me to understand just why."

Local police are working with campus police and administrators to investigate the shooting.

Lorelai and Rory Gilmore would totally approve of this. True Gilmore Girls fans not only know that the mother-daughter duo is as coffee-obsessed as they come, but that the series premiered on October 5, 2000. That would make this Wednesday, October 5, the 16th anniversary of Gilmore Girls. *short pause for the praise and hallelujahs you know you want to give up*

In honor of the momentous occasion, Netflix is transforming 200 coffee shops across the country (and even Canada!) into Luke's Diner for a day. Participating locations will also hand out 250 free—yes, FREE, every collegiette's favorite word—cups of coffee between the hours of 7 a.m. and 12 p.m.

The actual Luke Danes may not be on hand to serve you that delicious dose of caffeine, but there will be fun homages to the series, like branded aprons and T-shirts and a goodie hiding under your Gilmore Girls coffee sleeve.

What better way to celebrate the beginning and the return of this classic television show that has a permanent place in our hearts? To see if "Luke's Coffee Day" is coming to a coffee shop near you, check out the list of participating locations here.

What To Do When You’re Having Doubts About Your Major

College is hard. Deciding on a major is sometimes even harder. So what do you do when you’re having doubts about your career path? What about when you’re close to graduation and you’re dreading what lies ahead? First things first, relax. Thousands of college students have been in your shoes before and here’s what some of them had to say when they were having doubts about their major.

1. Talk to a counselor

A counselor’s purpose on a college campus is to guide you into the world so that you can be a productive member of society. Part of doing so requires that you enter into a field that you enjoy. Elaina Steingard, a senior journalism major at the University of Missouri says, “Talk to a guidance counselor and look into other major options and career paths. If you’re dreading your classes within your major, talk to a counselor about what needs to be done in order to switch.” Mandy Bailes, an employee in the advising office at the University of Missouri says online quizzes are also a good route to go when you’re unsure about your major. “Online quizzes (such as StrengthsQuest) focus on your five biggest strengths and give you options for majors that would be good for your personality. [StrengthsQuest] also gives you study tips and future jobs you may be interested in.”

2. Talk to older students in your major

They know better than anyone about what it takes to do well in your major. Try to be unbiased when asking for their opinions. If everyone you talk to hates biology, however, then chances are you won’t find reasons to love it. You most likely won’t love everything about your major, but if the good things outweigh the bad then that’s something to consider. Katie Roberts, a student at the University of Missouri, did this when she was starting out in her program. “Before each semester I would ask the older girls in my chapter who were in journalism how they liked a class. I would lean on them and ask for guidance with my schedule and teacher preference. Their input definitely made an impact.”

3. Take an elective to test out a new major

If you can’t decide between two things that you may be interested in then you should take one of the subjects as a class elective. You will probably receive credit for the course while figuring out if it is something you could see yourself doing after graduation. Hannah Hart, a student at Auburn University, says, “This is probably the best option for someone with doubts about their major. Worse case scenario would be they end up with a minor.” Or, they could end up graduating with a double major, which could be just what you need to succeed.

4. Go to the career center

The career center offers tons of resources aside from talking with an advisor. Here you can network with possible employers, participate in mock interviews, work on your resume and discuss future plans with a career specialist, which is different from an academic advisor. Katherine Barton, a senior at Auburn University, had doubts about her major. “Going to the career center really helped and now I am going to law school after I graduate,” she says.

5. Make a pro/con list

Take some time to make a list of the things you love and hate about your current major. It helps to visually see what things you could deal with and what things may be deal breakers. You could also do the same for another major you are thinking of switching over to.

6. Talk to your parents

Your parents know everything about you and would hopefully steer you in the right professional direction. Bounce ideas off of them; they may need some time to get used to you switching career paths, but at the end of the day they just want you to be happy.

Having doubts about you major is nothing to be ashamed of. The best thing you can do for yourself in this situation is know that no matter the major, there will be times when it is difficult, time consuming or stressful. Just make sure you are happy in whatever field you choose because if you love your job, that makes going to work that much better.

Periods—where do we even begin? How about it's the worst kind of torture any woman could possibly go through? Nothing compares to the cramps, cravings, PMS-ing, bloating and the sore breasts on those days of the month. Here are 11 things your period feels like:

1. Constant AF diarrhea pain

2. Like someone is standing on your lower back in stilettos

3. Like you really have to take a shit

4. Like someone ripped out your ovaries and replaced them with razor blades

5. Like you're being repeatedly kicked in the lower abdomen

6. This

7. Like you're being stabbed from the inside out

8. A dementor trying to eat your soul

9. An elf traveling around your body, hitting your head with a hammer, bouncing up and down on your uterus, and pressing nails against your stomach

10. Or mini ninjas trying to kill you from inside

11. Like someone reached into your insides, competed in a Double Dutch Competition…and won

15 Signs You Think Your Life is Your Mom’s Only Concern

If you grew up with a mom that monitored your every move, college probably felt like a much-needed break. Or maybe you two have always been close, and being home is just like old times…or is it? She adjusted to you exercising your independence at school, but now that she's doing her own thing, it feels totally strange. Here are some ways that you expect the woman who brought you into this world to, well, have her world revolve around you.

1. You look forward to a home-cooked meal…every meal.

It’s gotten so bad that she actually gives you money for takeout.

2. You’re insulted when she doesn’t like your posts on social media.

How can she like a picture of a dog dressed as a pumpkin, but not your #nofilter selfie?

3. You assume she’ll gladly do your laundry, wash your bed sheets, and clean up after you.

Reality check: your mother may hate messes, but she’s not your personal maid.

4. You fill her in on every detail of your day, without waiting for her to ask.

Her eyes are looking more glazed than a donut, but of course she’s paying attention to what you’re saying!

5. If she doesn’t answer your calls or texts right away, you get worried.

If she sees your name pop up on her phone, she should respond immediately.

6. But if she doesn’t return your calls or texts at all, you get pissed.

How dare she ignore all the eggplant emojis you sent her while grocery shopping.

7. You’re surprised when she makes plans without telling you.

Wait, you didn’t give her permission to have a life.

8. You're also annoyed if she makes plans that don’t include you.

Why would she want to get her nails done alone, when you could have gotten a mani-pedi together?

9. If you go out to run errands, you insist that she tag along.

Helping you buy new clothes is clearly more important than household chores.

10. You’ve given her countless pictures of yourself, that way she can show you off to all her friends.

Your school photo is your personal favorite.

11. If you’re sick, you demand she drop everything and take care of you.

And by “demand,” you mean whining until she brings you a bowl of chicken noodle soup.

12. When you fight, you use the silent treatment to upset her.

But it never lasts long, because not talking to her only ends up upsetting you.

13. You automatically rank yourself as her favorite.

If you're not an only child, your siblings are your competition.

14. You anticipate frequent lectures about dating and sex.

Those talks are rare and will literally begin and end with, “Use condoms.”

15. You shower her with attention, thinking she needs it to feel loved.

Which is silly—she knows you love her, just as much as she loves you.

What It’s Like to Date if You (or Your SO) Had Toxic Parents

Anyone with toxic parents or dating someone with toxic parents likely knows how difficult they can be when it comes to relationships. Your parents already want to control every aspect of your life — school, work, extracurriculars — and now they want to control who you date? If your SO is the one with toxic parents, that may be even worse — now you have someone else’s parents trying to control your life. Or maybe love wasn’t given freely when you were a child, which can undoubtedly take a toll on your love life. Don’t worry — Her Campus is here to help. We’ve talked to Carole Lieberman, M.D., psychiatrist and author of Bad Boys and Bad Girls, and collegiettes who’ve been there to let you know what it’s like to date with toxic parents in the picture and how you can make the most of a situation like this.

1. You’ll feel forbidden from certain events and experiences

When you or your SO has toxic parents, it may feel like you can’t do certain things, such as date freely. “It is likely that these toxic parents will continue to haunt your relationship in other ways, too, even now that you are grown up,” Lieberman says. “For example, if they are too critical, controlling or are absentee parents, they will affect how you see yourself and how you see your significant other.” Jasmine Yadeta, a junior at the University of Victoria, knows this firsthand. “They consistently undermine you regardless of age or experience and that becomes extremely evident in the dating scene,” she shares. “Their feelings tend to come before your own and no matter how badly you want to start dating and getting yourself out there, you are ridden with guilt because their emotions are a priority in comparison to yours (or at least that’s how it seems).”

Jasmine was able to get out of this once her parents got divorced. “I was lucky and was able to start fresh with my relationships as me, and I became really grounded in who I am,” she says. “My mother listened to reasoning with an open ear after the divorce and honestly it only went up from there.” Even if your parents aren’t getting a divorce, don’t feel like you’re stuck — you’re your own person and are entitled to having your own healthy relationships.

2. It may be harder to commit or say “I love you”

Lieberman mentions that growing up with toxic parents can make it difficult to experience intimacy. “Still feeling the sting of rejection or other hurt, you are afraid to get closer to your partner for fear that they will similarly reject or hurt you,” she says. “This makes it harder to commit or to say, ‘I love you.’” If you’re wondering why you have a fear of commitment or are dreading those three little words, your upbringing might be the answer. If your parents didn’t show you love as a child, it will be hard for you to show love to someone else.

3. You’ll face judgment and drama

This goes without saying — toxic parents will judge your every move, which leads to inevitable drama. Jenna*, a sophomore at the University of South Carolina, recently went through a breakup because of a toxic parent, specifically her ex-boyfriend’s mom. “She would be nice to my face and then he would tell me things that would take me aback,” she says. “It was a constant argument in our relationship that he wouldn't stick up for me enough when his family would say things that were absolutely crazy, so we got to a breaking point.” If your SO is blind to his family’s pettiness, it’s probably time to move on. You can’t let toxic parents drive you to a breaking point.

4. You may fear your SO is cheating on you

Growing up in an unsteady household may make you doubt your SO’s commitment. “If you were raised with a father who cheated, who left home or who otherwise did not make you feel worthy of a good man’s love, then you will be fearful that your partner will cheat on you, abandon you or disappoint you in some other way,” Lieberman says. It’s important to remember that your partner’s actions won’t automatically reflect your parents’. It may be hard to put those thoughts on the backburner, but it’s still important. If you’re in a healthy relationship, you should trust your SO.

5. Your SO will make you feel stronger

Although having toxic parents (or an SO with toxic parents) makes it difficult to date, it can make your relationship that much more important. “My mom is emotionally abusive and it definitely affects my dating dynamics,” says Emma*, a junior at the University of Alabama. “It makes it even more important for me to have a supportive SO because they kind of have to outweigh the negativity she creates in my life.” Finding someone who will be there for you, toxic parents or not, is extremely valuable and will put a true test to your relationship.

What can do you?

Although you’ll have difficulty in any relationship, it’s important to keep things between you and your SO. “I think while dating, especially in a long-term relationship where you think about wanting to be with someone forever, it's important to keep your relationship between just the two of you and not get toxic families and their opinions involved,” Jenna says. “But, if it's a constant argument and makes the relationship toxic too, you have to take a step back and see if this is really worth the fight.” If you’re able to put the issues aside and become closer, you know you and your SO are in it for the long haul.

Although toxic parents may put a burden on your dating life, it’s ultimately up to you how much it affects you. If you and your SO use each other to stay strong and keep the relationship between the two of you, you can get through it. Good luck, collegiettes!

Easily one of the best parts of childhood was trick-or-treating –– don’t even lie, collegiettes, you miss it too. Few things were better than getting home, dumping your sac of candy on the floor and sorting through it (a.k.a. eating more than half of it right then and there).

No matter how old we get, one thing is for sure: we will never stop indulging in some sweet treats on Halloween. While there are all kinds of candies that bless us with their presence around this time, we ranked our 15 all-time favorites. Here’s what we decided:
