5 Ways to Make Your Relationship Work When You’re Both Busy

0
0

A new semester of college is upon us, meaning that life is in full swing again. Balancing classes, work, extracurricular activities and a social life is hard enough, yet finding time to squeeze your SO into the mix can seem impossible. Time may not be on your side, but creating space in your schedule to keep the love alive in your relationship is possible. Here are five ways to keep the spark going in a relationship where you’re both busy.

1. Schedule dates and stick to them

It’s easy to put date night on the back burner because you’re “too busy.” However, when you make date night just as important of a priority as a doctor’s appointment, then you’re sure to not miss another date or schedule anything over it.

Even if you can’t spend a long amount of time with them, try to make date night as memorable as possible. Marie*, a graduate student at Florida Atlanta University, thinks that seeing each other even for a couple of minutes is better than not seeing her SO at all.

“Schedule dates that you can look forward to,” she says. “My boyfriend and I try to do weekly lunch dates, even if they are only 20 to 30 minutes long by the time we drive to meet each other.”

Remember, a memorable date doesn’t always mean expensive, either. Simply trying to incorporate romantic touches like a bouquet of handpicked flowers or a note to leave your SO with when you part ways is sure to leave them smiling.

2. Pick up the phone

For the majority of us, there isn’t a day that goes by that we aren’t on our phone. And let’s face it—it only takes two seconds to send a text. If we think even deeper, we probably have at least 10 free minutes in the day. The excuse, “I was too busy to contact you” won’t fly anymore.

Jay Hurt, expert relationship coach, finds that in his personal life, he still finds a way to reach out to his wife, who is equally as busy. “Even when I’m busy working or away traveling, I’ll send an email or a text to let her know I am thinking about her,” he says.

Even if you don’t have the opportunity to have a full-blown conversation with them one day, let them know that you’re still thinking about them.

3. Fit them into your everyday routine

If finding a free day for you and your SO to have date night is a seemingly impossible task, don’t worry. You don’t have to rearrange your whole schedule to make time for your SO. Instead, fit them into your current schedule.

Whether that means they become your new study partner or your errand buddy, the most important takeaway is that you’re spending time together.

Rachel Petty, a senior at James Madison University, finds that even doing the littlest of things together is the most meaningful. “My boyfriend and I are both super busy,” she says. “But, we do little things like go to the gym or make dinner together to keep the spark going.”

Having your SO there and being supportive in your everyday life could serve as motivation to do your best.

4. Remember little details

It’s hard not to feel a rush of excitement when somebody remembers the little details about us. So while you may have a lot of things you need to remember, you need to add “random facts about your SO” to that list.

Maybe your SO is into animals, so you tag them in a cute Facebook video of animals. Or perhaps they have a favorite football team, so you buy them some team gear before the season kicks off.

“It’s all about the little things and details. For example, I’ll make sure my wife’s favorite show is recorded… Even when I travel, I send my wife her favorite flowers,” said Hurt.

Your SO is sure to appreciate the effort, whether big or small. Any action that proves you're invested in the relationship will be met with gratitude.

5. Make sacrifices

Part of being in a relationship is making sacrifices for the benefit of your SO. The most successful relationships are those in which couples don’t give up so easily just because their lives got busy.

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re in high school, college or my age,” says Hurt. "I am big on selflessness. Do whatever it takes to put your SO first."

When Alaina Leary, a graduate student at Emerson College, experienced clashing busy schedules with her girlfriend, she decided to cut part of her social life out to make time for her.

“We found it was important to make time for just the two of us,” she says. “Since we have active social lives and a lot of friends in the area, we were often spending our only time off, weekends, with a group of people and rarely had time to spend together. We made an effort to schedule time together, and that helped a lot. It was good for both of our sanity.”

If you are confident that you have found the one, you should want to make these type of sacrifices for the wellbeing of your relationship.

So while you may be swamped with all different types of commitments, that doesn’t mean you should lose sight of love. It’s possible to make your SO a priority and not lose sight of your goals either. Being busy doesn't excuse putting your relationship on the backburner.

The 10 Biggest Lies 'Friends' Told About Life in Your 20s

0
0

As recent grads, we all have expectations of what our lives will look like. Some of what we’ve planned for rings true, but the rest? Not so much—and we just might have Friends to thank for that. As sad as it may be, we must come to terms with the fact that we are not Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Ross or Chandler, and we will not spend the majority of our twenties lounging on a comfy orange couch.

Presenting: “The One Where Friends Repeatedly Lied to Us”

Lie #1: Even as an unemployed actor or mediocre (to put it kindly) waitress, you will be able to live in a large two-bedroom apartment in the hottest neighborhood.

As many graduettes will tell you, the palaces featured on Friends aren’t quite representative of a typical first apartment (read: shoebox). Paying rent on an entry-level salary is a very real struggle that the Friends characters somehow seemed to avoid. Yes, they were always looking for extra ways to earn cash, but how much can you really make by donating fluids (Joey) or selling knives (Phoebe)?

Lie #2: Your friends will always be available and somewhere within a two-block radius whenever you’re looking to hang out.

This might be the saddest lie of them all. Unlike college, you probably aren’t able to spend hours of each day with your BFFs. Finding time for one another during the week can be a major challenge, especially if you live or work in different neighborhoods. The good news is you’ll value the moments you do spend together that much more. Aww.

Lie #3: You’ll know people with pet monkeys, chicks, ducks and rats.

Sure, you might have friends with cats or fish, but you probs won’t be hanging out with any farm and/or zoo animals any time soon. This also means you don’t have to worry about being attacked or humped by a monkey on a first date (we hope).

Lie #4: If and when you have kids of your own, they will demand minimal attention and disappear altogether around the age of 6.

But seriously, what happened to Ben?! Ross’s son ceased to exist in the last few seasons of the show, but anyone with nieces, nephews or a babysitting job can attest that children are a major responsibility and that they sometimes, just sometimes, get in the way of hanging out with friends.

Lie #5: Pizza will always be delivered by a super-hot girl (not to be confused with the equally hot girl who works at the copy place).

Hot delivery girls are hard to come by IRL. Ross trying (and failing) to flirt with said delivery girl? Now that seems pretty accurate.

Lie #6: You will date someone new every week, or, in Joey’s case, every day.

We hate to break it to you, but your dating life will probably pale in comparison to those of the Friends characters. You may not date a billionaire or a scientist or a celebrity, and you won’t meet someone new (let alone someone dateable!) every time you leave your apartment. There’s also a chance that you won’t marry one of your three guy friends.

Lie #7: Don’t worry if you accidentally kiss your interviewer (or scream at him, or forget his name); you will still get the job.

Oh, Rachel Green, if only we all had your charm. On the bright side, we can feel happy with ourselves every time we survive an interview without a makeout sesh. Way to set the bar high, Rach.

Lie #8: You will remain best friends with your ex after multiple messy breakups.

You can also hook up with your ex’s best friend (who happens to be another one of your best friends) and remain BFFs with both of them… JK. Yes, Ross and Rachel shared the love story of the century, and they’re the reason we ugly-cried all of seasons two through four, but that doesn’t mean that their relationship was normal. It’s totally okay if you don’t want to spend all day err day with your ex.

Lie #9: You won’t get fired for spending half of the workday at a coffee shop with your friends.

Yes, Monica got fired from a restaurant once for taking home steaks, but what about the fact that she worked three hours a day? All of the friends seemed to share the mindset that work was fairly optional. Maybe that orange couch was always available because everyone else was at the office! Mystery solved.

Lie #10: Don’t bother locking your door. Ever.

And if you somehow find yourself locked out, you should knock down the door, naturally. But really—be safe, graduettes.

Now that we’re all questioning everything we’ve ever thought to be true, we should probably mention that there is one thing that Friends actually did get right: No matter what happens with jobs, apartments, financial situations or SOs, your besties will always be there for you (and they’ll know when it’s time to whip out the Ben & Jerry’s and turn on everyone’s favorite show).

Stranger Things' Steve Met Parks & Recreation's Jean-Ralphio & It Was Glorious

The famously theorized father-son duo—Steve from Stranger Things and Jean-Ralphio from Parks and Recreation—have finally met, documenting their hangout through a series of awesome Twitter photos.

The idea that Steve is Jean-Ralphio’s father surfaced shortly after summer's smash hit Stranger Things was released, when fans noticed the resemblance between Steve Harrington (played by Joe Kerry) and Jean-Ralphio Saperstein (played by Ben Schwartz). Theories began to crop up that Stranger Things and Parks and Rec exist in the same universe, with Steve’s character secretly fathering the notably sketchy but hilarious Jean-Ralphio.

After Ben Schwartz confirmed the theory in this video, the pair quickly came together to catch up on some much-needed father-son bonding.

“Dad and son meet because of the internet,” Schwartz wrote in a Twitter post Tuesday.

During their time together, Steve taught Jean-Ralphio some very important lessons, such as how to shave.

They even wore matching flannel shirts and posed back-to-back like the twins from the iconic flick The Parent Trap. With their swooping dark hair and arched eyebrows, the pair looks almost identical.

Stranger Things fans can now only hope that Jean-Raphio will make an appearance in season two.

How to Transition Your Favorite Summer Trends for Fall

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Kohl’s for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Her Campus partnered with Kohls.com to bring you some back to school style tips, and here’s my biggest one: I hate to break it to you, but doing a full closet transition every season – especially from warmer months to cooler months – is a scam! No one should need to say good bye to a piece she loves just because the temperature is getting colder. All it takes is a little creativity to make your favorite summer clothes work and stay relevant for fall. After all, A+ dressing in college is all about comfort and layering. One moment you’ll be sitting in a freezing lecture hall and the next you’ll be making the long climb to your 4th floor walk-up dorm room, trying not to break a sweat. You need items that will be comfortable in a warm situation but can also be layered with a sweater, cardigan, or other outerwear. I picked out an outfit from Kohl’s to show you how to easily transition some of your favorite summer trends and items and make them work for the fall semester.

Let’s get started with what’s probably a big category in your closet: your summer tops! One of my favorite trends this summer has been the lace-up top. There are a million variations of this style, but you can always count on a lace-up top to be playful, comfortable, and showing just the right amount of skin. I found this amazing Chaps top at Kohl’s that combines the lace-up trend with a timeless classic – the nautical stripe. I’d wear a top like this all summer with white jeans or shorts, and it would be a shame to have to put it away for fall.

An easy way to transition a summery piece like this is to swap your light-colored bottoms with something a little edgier and season appropriate for fall. Try black denim, a totally underrated basic! Here, I’ve paired the top with these super cool Rock & Republic distressed jeggings. The best thing about these jeggings? They came in so many different sizes and lengths, perfect for petites like me! I usually have to cuff or hem my denim, but Kohls.com carries a huge variety of sizes, especially once you consider Kohl’s Juniors Apparel Page. Check out their selection of Mudd, Candie’s and SO for enough options to make your head spin!

Another necessity for back to school: comfy but chic walking shoes that are versatile and fuss-free. Honestly, who has time for tying and untying shoelaces anymore? Not me, and definitely not you. I’ve recently been opting for slip-ons more and more because when you’re constantly on the go, you need to be able to get out the door fast. Anything else will slow you down, and #girlbosses like you don’t have time for that! The same Vans you wore all summer long are perfect for walking around on campus, too. Make sure to pick a design that is versatile, like this black and white geometric pattern that will go with literally everything.

Finally, don’t forget about accessorizing strategically to complete your fall look! Just like adding a statement necklace to a casual dress will instantly glam it up, you can mix in some distinctly fall accessories to tie together your summer-transitioned-to-fall look. Anything with the look of black leather will do the trick, and there’s probably no better item to invest in than a trendy and unique backpack. I’m obsessed with this Juicy Couture faux leather studded backpack which features an interior laptop pocket. So practical and so chic at the same time! My advice: put your huge tote away and opt for a cool girl backpack – plus, your shoulders will thank you!

You can shop Shop Kohl’s Back to School  to get my complete look, or find thousands of other amazing pieces on your own. Remember: you don’t have to start from scratch building your fall closet – just find a couple items you love from your closet and add a few smart pieces to transition your favorites from summer to fall effortlessly! Happy shopping, and go make all of your #BigPlans for fall come true!

1 Person Critically Injured by Gunshot During Charlotte Protests

Protests in response to the death of Keith Lamont Scott in Charlotte ended with gunfire when one civilian was shot by another on Wednesday evening, according to CNN. One of the civilians is currently in critical condition and a police officer who was also injured at the scene was rushed to the hospital.

The protests were being held not only in response to Scott's death, but also to the general pattern of black people shot by police. These shootings have taken place at an alarming rate over the past year, increasing the rage of protesters in Charlotte.

Violence has erupted the last two nights, when people threw rocks, blocked a highway and destroyed property, NBC News reports. Tear gas was used to control the crowd after 16 officers were injured.

Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts noted that she will not be releasing the video of Scott’s shooting to the public due to the fact that the police are still investigating. Evidence at the scene, including a recovered gun, point to the idea that Scott was armed. Scott’s family claim he was unarmed and reading a book when shot by police. According to CNBC, body and dashboard camera video from the scene will be shown to Scott's family. Chief of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department Kerr Putney, who spoke at a press conference on Thursday, made the point that even if the video is released, it may not have much of an effect as many people "have already made up their minds" on what happened in the Scott case.

Chief Putney asks that the public help police during this time by posting on social media if they see something wrong in the wake of the protests. With different accounts of the shooting and tension heavy in the air, it's clear that we still have a lot of work to do to stop violence like this from happening.

Gigi Hadid Had to Defend Herself When Assaulted in Milan

We live in a world where men feel it's appropriate to treat women however they'd like—in public and behind closed doors. For those of you who think catcalling is harmless and question why it terrifies us as women, this very, very scary video of Gigi Hadid being assaulted by an obsessed "fan" when leaving the Max Mara show is exactly what we're so afraid of having happen.

Thursday morning, as Gigi was leaving her Milan Fashion Week show, a man came up behind her, grabbed her and picked her up. Gigi responded appropriately—the 21-year-old model went into full-on defense mode, freeing an arm to elbow her attacker in the face. "Let go of me! Who the fuch are you? You piece of shit!" she yelled his way. The man clearly wasn't expecting the response he got (because, you know, men don't expect women to fight back), because he recoiled with shock and ran away when he was hit in the face.

We are grossed out, creeped out and honestly, scared—what makes men feel this behavior is appropriate, ever? While any sane person would condemn the actions of this creep, many media sources have criticized Gigi. “Not Model Behavior” was emblazoned on The Sun’s website; others wrote misleading headlines.

We're hoping this man is caught and has to face the consequences of his actions. Assaulting a complete stranger is absolutely not okay.

7 Fall-Themed & Healthy Dishes You Need to Try

0

Let’s face it, just because something is pumpkin spiced, doesn’t mean it’s healthy – or even made of pumpkin, for that matter. Ditch the latte, and look for seasonal foods like apples, sweet potatoes, squashes and nuts. Swimsuit season may have come and gone, but it’s easy to incorporate these fall foods all the while maintaining your health.

1.  Butternut Squash & Apple Soup

Nothing says fall quite like taking a trip to the local farmers’ market for some butternut squash and pumpkin. Registered dietitian Adrienne Raimo refers to this dish as a way to remain healthy and in balance during the cooler season. What makes this so nutritious is that it’s whole foods, plant-based and has an array of healthy macronutrients like fat, carbs and protein, as well as vitamin A, zinc and more.

Recipe courtesy of One Bite Wellness

Ingredients

  • 3-4 tablespoons high-quality butter or olive oil (for a dairy-free option)

  • 4 pounds butternut squash, roasted (average butternut squash weighs 2-3 pounds)

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 2 apples, chopped

  • 1/2 cup water or vegetable broth

  • 3/4 teaspoons cinnamon

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • 1 cup pumpkin seeds (topping)

Instructions

Roast butternut squash first. Preheat oven to 375 degrees, cut squash open lengthwise and remove seeds. Place squash upside-down on baking sheet and pour about 1/2 cup water on the bottom of baking sheet (or enough so it surrounds squash and helps to steam it). Roast 25-30 minutes, until flesh is fork-tender.

Meanwhile, melt butter/olive oil in pot over medium heat. Add onion and sauté until tender (about eight minutes). Add the roasted squash, apples, and water/vegetable broth. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Add cinnamon and turn off burner to cool food slightly. Then, in small batches, transfer mixture from pot to a high-speed blender and puree until smooth. If too thick, add more liquid. Season with salt and pepper, then transfer to serving bowl and sprinkle with pumpkin seeds. Optional: serve with blue corn chips or whole grain crackers.

2. Vegetarian Chili

This recipe is perfect for autumn and jam-packed with yummy vegetables! Chef, author and cookbook extraordinaire, Patty James recommends eating serving this with a salad to ensure you’re getting raw veggies, too. This chili is a great way to get fiber, as the vegetables and beans are naturally high in it!

Recipe courtesy of Patty James

Ingredients

  • 2 cups pinto beans
  • 2 cups kidney beans
  • 2 cups black beans
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 onions, whole, chopped
  • 1 cup celery, chopped
  • 1 cup shiitake mushrooms, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 jalapeno, minced
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 2 cans crushed Italian tomatoes, 28 ounce each
  • Dash cayenne pepper

Instructions

In a large, heavy saucepan over medium heat, warm the olive oil. Add the celery, onions and jalapeño and sauté until tender, about 10 minutes. Add the mushrooms, red pepper, garlic, chili powder, cumin and cayenne and stir for about five minutes. Add the beans and tomatoes, stir and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for about 20 minutes. Stir occasionally. Season to taste with sea salt and pepper. Serve as is, or garnish with avocado, cilantro and cheese. Can serve over brown rice to make a complete protein.

3. Baked Penne Pasta with Roasted Vegetables

Also full of vegetables, this dish puts an Italian twist on the typical fall food. Use this to get your healthy carbs, as well as vitamin C. Don’t forget the side salad, like James says!

Recipe courtesy of Patty James

Ingredients

  • 2 medium red peppers, cored and cut into 1 inch wide strips
  • 2 medium zucchini, quartered lengthwise, cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 2 medium summer squash, quartered lengthwise, cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 6 medium shitake mushrooms, halved
  • 1 medium yellow onion, peeled and sliced into 1 inch strips
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt, divided
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided
  • 1 tablespoon dried Italian herb mix or herbs de Provence
  • 1 pound penne pasta
  • 3 cups marinara sauce
  • 1 cup Fontina cheese, grated
  • 1/2 cup smoked mozzarella, grated
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen peas, thawed
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus 1/3 cup for topping
  • 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. On a baking sheet, toss the peppers, zucchini, squash, mushrooms and onions with olive oil and then mix in 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper and dried herbs. Roast until al dente, about 15-20 minutes.

Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the pasta and cook for about 6 minutes. Since you will be cooking the pasta a second time in the oven, you want to make sure the inside is still hard. Drain in a colander.

In a large bowl, toss the drained pasta with the roasted vegetables, marinara sauce, cheeses, peas, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Using a wooden spoon, gently mix, until all the pasta is coated with the sauce and the ingredients are combined.

Pour the pasta into a greased 9" by 13" pan. Top with the remaining 1/3 cup Parmesan and butter pieces. Bake until top is golden and cheese melts, about 25 minutes.

4. Apricot Cranberry Relish

Cranberries aren’t just for sauce or Thanksgiving. Clinical dietitian Adrienne Burns says that they promote bladder health and may even decrease your risk of some cancers! Try this for a sweet alternative to Halloween candy!

Recipe courtesy of Coastal Living

Ingredients

  • I cup orange juice
  • 1/2 cup and 2 tablespoons honey, divided
  • 1 12-ounce package fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped dried apricots
  • 1/3 cup finely chopped green onion
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped crystalized ginger

Instructions

Combine orange juice and 1/2 cup honey in a saucepan; bring to a boil. Add cranberries, bring to a boil and remove from heat. Drain and let cool. Combine cranberries, two tablespoons honey and remaining ingredients in a medium bowl.

5. Cinnamon & Walnut Shake

Cinnamon is popular around this time of year, which is definitely a good thing. It’s been shown to improve glucose tolerance and is loaded with nutrients, according to Burns. This is a great variation to a normal walnut shake, and it's perfect for fall!

Recipe courtesy of The Dr. Oz Show

Ingredients

  • 1 cup walnuts
  • 2 cups filtered water
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

Soak the walnuts in water for a few hours or overnight. Drain the liquid and discard. Place the walnuts and filtered water in a blender and pulse until smooth. Add cinnamon and pulse again.

6. Lamb Ragu

Raimo’s unique dinner incorporates a variety of fall vegetables and is perfect for a chilly night! It has a balanced macronutrient profile and includes vitamin A, lycopene and a variety of antioxidants.

Recipe courtesy of One Bite Wellness

Ingredients

  • 2 large carrots, cut on a diagonal
  • 5-6 cloves of garlic
  • 3 tablespoon of grass-fed butter
  • 1 pound of premium-quality lamb chops
  • 8 oz. grass-fed stew beef
  • 3 stalks of celery
  • 1 tablespoon chorizo fat
  • 2 large Russet potatoes
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 6-7 Roma tomatoes, or heirloom if you have them
  • 2 shots of vodka
  • 1 teaspoon rosemary, dill, thyme, parsley, Foxpoint (Penzey's spices)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Begin by making mashed potatoes. Boil potatoes with cloves of garlic, smash everything and add butter. Boil celery and carrots in saucepan until very tender and water nearly evaporated.

In a saucepan, put whole tomatoes and vodka and start cooking. Smash with potato masher once tender and add salt, pepper. Let simmer. Sear beef and lamb in chorizo fat and add pieces of beef to tomato sauce; turn heat down to low for lamb, add onion and continue to simmer until onions are caramelized or for 45 minutes. Serve as a layered meal. Each layer will have its own unique flavor and every bite is a celebration in your mouth.

7. Fresh Apple Salsa

Practically anything with apples is perfect for fall, but this nutritious side dish can’t be beat. This is especially true due to all of its benefits: low sodium, high in fiber, and no cholesterol, or saturated fat!

Recipe courtesy of My Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups diced peeled Spartan apple (about 3/4 pound)
  • 1/2 cup diced red bell pepper
  • 1/3 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup diced red onion
  • 1/4 cup minced fresh cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced

Instructions

Combine all ingredients, stirring well.

Resist the infamous, sugary fall foods this season and opt for one of these dishes instead. Both your taste buds and body will be glad you did!

Racist Graffiti Sparks Student Protests at Eastern Michigan University

In case anyone needed an un-friendly reminder that racism is still a huge problem in our society, here it is: Eastern Michigan University students are protesting after staff discovered "KKK" and "Leave N*****s" spray-painted onto a campus building yesterday morning.

According to BuzzFeed News, an EMU employee noticed the vandalism on Tuesday morning, and called the police to report it soon after.

Students protested the incident on Tuesday. According to the Detroit Free Press, a crowd of more than 150 people marched to the home of the university’s president James Smith, who addressed the crowd along with some other campus officials.

Smith also released a statement following the incident, saying that “The University strongly condemns such a racist and thoughtless act, which runs completely counter to the values and welcoming environment of our highly diverse Eastern Michigan University community. Our Department of Public Safety is undertaking a full and immediate investigation, and the graffiti has been quickly removed."

The statement went on to say that officials hoped surveillance cameras located near the scene would provide some answers about who was involved.

Many students were not satisfied with Smith’s response, saying that the school needs to commit to taking serious action against racism on campus.

Janeé, a senior at EMU who spoke to BuzzFeed News, said she is not happy with the way black students are treated at the school.

“We’re hurt,” she said. “We pay for our education just like everyone else, so to see something like that in the morning on our way to class it’s caused outrage and pain…The black community at Eastern is phenomenal and all we want is to be treated like every other race here at Eastern.”

This Woman Pretended She Was Kidnapped to Get Her Boyfriend's Attention

A Florida woman was put in jail last Tuesday for faking her own kidnapping. The worst part? She did it for a guy's attention.

On September 10, Janet Elena Brooks reported to the police that she was walking through the parking lot of an apartment complex when she was abducted by a man at gunpoint who forced her into the trunk of his car and then dropped her off at a dog park, according to the Daily Commercial.

But when police pulled up surveillance footage of the area from that day, they saw her leaving the parking lot and walking towards the road, the Palm Beach Post reports.

When confronted, the Daily Commercial said Brooks confessed to fabricating the story to get her boyfriend’s attention. Apparently, she suspected that another woman was interested in her boyfriend and decided that faking abduction was the best way “to see if he truly cared about her,” according to police. In reality, she just took a trip to the store and a friend later dropped her off at the dog park.

She was charged with filing a false report with law enforcement and was released from the Lake County Jail after posting a $2,000 bond. So, don't lie to the police to get a romantic interest to pay attention—it's really not worth $2,000. Or the embarrassment.

You Should Go to These Schools if You Want to Make a Lot of Money

Money is one of the largest factors to take in consideration before, during and after college—well, basically in life—and it’s not going away anytime soon. But finance can be one of the scariest words in the English language for those trying that scary "adulting" thing. However, where you study in college can make just as much of an impact upon your finances as much as what you study. In a new report, PayScale ranked colleges according to which have the highest-paying alumni.

State University of New York—Maritime College ranked #1 on the list, with mid-career pay being $144,000 and starting pay at $69,700. A state school with 90 percent male students, some of the most popular majors include business, mechanical or industrial engineering, according to Mic.

Coming in second place is MIT, known for its rigorous STEM programs—their graduates make a mid-career pay of $134,000. Harvey Mudd College and Princeton University tied for third place and Stanford made fifth. Military schools were also well-represented in the top 10. Obviously we won't all be going to one of these top schools, so the most important thing is to graduate with your bachelor's degree. According to PayScale, “In today’s job market, having a bachelor’s degree is nearly a necessity to land a rewarding, well-paying job with any possibility for advancement; a bachelor’s degree is almost essential for entry into most professional careers.”

Yes, There IS a Such Thing as Pumpkin Spice French Fries

On the first day of Fall, we usually look forward to the coming holidays, a change in weather and anything pumpkin related (duh). That last expectation is definitely is being fulfilled—Cosmopolitan reports that McDonald’s Japan is releasing a new product: Pumpkin Spice and Chocolate Fries!

The fries, which are drizzled with pumpkin spice and chocolate sauce, are expected to be on sale from Sept. 28 to Oct. 31, according to the New York Daily News. That makes them the perfect Halloween EOD treat! But, this isn’t the first time that McDonald’s Japan has announced the release of a sauce n’ fries combo. According to Grub Street, back in January, the restaurant chain introduced the McChoco Potatoes—pretty much the same thing as these fries, but with milk and white chocolate sauce.

Sadly, these fries are only available in Japan—if you want to try them, be prepared to do some long-distance traveling. Study abroad, anyone?

Police officer Betty Shelby will be charged with first-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of Terence Crutcher, according to The New York Times.

Shelby, who works for the Tulsa police department and is white, claimed she "was never so scared in her life" as in her encounter with Crutcher, who is black. She was responding to a call about an abandoned car when she encountered Crutcher outside his SUV. Shelby said he acted strangely, didn't follow commands and was reaching through his car's window when he was tasered and shot. But multiple videos of the incident showed that Crutcher had his hands up, CNN reports.

Tulsa Police Chief Chuck Jordan has confirmed that Crutcher was unarmed and there was no weapon in his car.

Charges against a police officer for shooting a civilian are rare. The BBC reported in April that between 2005 and 2011, 41 officers were charged with manslaughter or murder—while thousands of people were killed by police.

You finally decide to go with the trendy long bob like all of your favorite celebrities, but now, you’re absolutely clueless about how to style it. Unfortunately we can’t all be Nina Dobrev or Emma Stone and have a stylist on command, so you’re going to have to figure out how to style your hair by yourself. Since you’re busy, here’s a serving of easy, yet awesome hairstyles you can totally do for your 8 a.m.

1. Beach Waves

Everyone knows you didn’t hit the beach before class, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look like it!

“If I make an effort, I curl my hair with a Revlon curling wand that's about three inches wide,” recommends Molly Gross, a senior at Bentley University.

Beach waves work perfectly if you want to dress up a regular t-shirt and jeans, but make sure you keeps your curls loose so you don’t end up looking like a poodle. Not only is this hairstyle trendy, it shows off your length and adds just the right amount of class to any look.

2. Not Your Average Ponytail

Maybe you’re hitting the gym after class, but that doesn’t mean you have to throw up your hair in a messy bun. This style is awesome for medium length hair because it ensures your hair won’t be getting in the way when you’re busy. Also, it’s not boring at all.  Add some pep to your usual ponytail by switching it up a bit.

Deirdre Bardolf, a junior at SUNY Old Westbury says, “I love the loop ponytail hairstyle because it's so easy but looks so classy. I always get compliments on it.”

So, add some pizzazz to your typical ponytail if you work in a professional work or internship environment where you don’t have much fashion and beauty freedom. This this simple addition will give you a huge confidence boost and will immediately improve any boring business attire.

3. The Party Bun

Maybe you’re hitting the house party down the street or maybe you’re just trying to make your unwashed hair look presentable. Either way, the party bun is the cutest option for a quick yet fab hairstyle. Not only does it send strong ‘90s vibes, it’s an easy way to look like you made an effort to style your hair without trying hard at all.

“It's my favorite hairstyle of all-time because I can pull back the part that hangs in my face but then not have to worry about the part that isn't in my face,” says Micki Wagner, a junior at the University of Missouri, Columbia.

This style is perfect for a girl on the go that needs a quick transitional hairstyle. People will get to admire your not-too-short, not-too-long hair and you won’t have to worry about your hair making you hot while you’re burning up the dance floor. Who doesn’t love a multi-purpose hair do?

4. The Classic Pin-Up

If you have curly or wavy hair and want to show off your volume, try pinning a section of your hair back on the side. It will bring attention to your beautiful face and will also contrast the volume that your hair naturally has. This is perfect for you gals who are growing out their bangs or if your hair is in desperate need of a trim.

Sophia Walker, a senior at Bowdoin College, says, “I'll pin one side back, up, and over and let the volume out on the other side so there's a bit of an asymmetrical look going on. It's pretty easy to do, and super stylish.”

Use this hairstyle for a quick fix in between classes, or fake the curly hair texture by using a curling wand, if your hair is naturally straight.

5. The Side Fishtail Braid

Oh, you fancy, huh? You’ll be feeling like a million bucks once you conquer the fishtail braid.

“I always get a ton of compliments, it keeps your hair out of your face and off your neck, and is so easy!” says Ariel Vaisbort, a senior at Western University.

Fishtail braids may look intimidating, but with a little bit of practice you will be a pro. Master the art of this braid and you’ll have a go-to hairstyle for formals, nights out and trips to the beach. This braid puts your length in the spotlight and shows that you do have enough hair to conquer the styles reserved for gals with longer hair.

With this arsenal of styles, you’ll never utter the phrase, “I don’t know what to do with my hair” ever again. And once you get comfortable with these styles, you’ll be able to experiment and create your own hairstyle, just like the hair guru you were always meant to be. These looks will take you from a trend follower to a trendsetter.

CBS’s new docuseries, The Case of: JonBenét Ramsey, which investigates the mysterious death of six-year old JonBenét Ramsey, is under fire from the Ramsey family. The controversy stems from allegations that Ramsey’s older brother, Burke Ramsey. The family is a little more than angry about the accusations, and is claiming that they will take action against the network. Lin Wood, the Ramsey’s lawyer, says the family is ready to sue CBS.

In the show, the investigation seeks to solve the mystery of the beauty queen's death. Investigators on the show claim that her brother was violent and say outright that they believe he is to blame for the then-6-year-old's death. In addition, they believe that the family knew about it—and covered it up.

"I will be filing on behalf of Burke Ramsey," Wood said to Reuters. "CBS’s false and unprofessional attacks on this young man are disgusting and revolting." In the suit, they are claiming CBS is guilty of "lies, misrepresentations, distortions, and omissions."

CBS isn’t backing down though, saying “it stands by the broadcast and will do so in court.”

Kim Kardashian is setting the record straight. Kind of. In a new interview for Wonderland magazine, Kim discusses the legendary #KimExposedTaylorParty. We were all invited. We came, we saw, we were absolutely riveted. The drama was real.

In the series of Snapchats that Kim released, Kanye West is heard on the phone with Taylor, explaining the concept of his song “Famous.” In the song, he says this about Taylor: “I made that b***h famous.” Kim was compelled to release the recording after Taylor claimed she had never heard anything about the song prior to its release, and was subsequently offended by it. Kim was none too pleased, and felt compelled to show the receipts. But Kim wants the world to know that she didn’t mean any harm.

“I never publicly talk bad about people,” she says in her interview with Wonderland. “I still don’t feel like I have. I’m being honest. I’m a fan. I like her music. There was no shade.”

Kim also reveals that Taylor’s squad was quick to clap back at Kim, but she wouldn’t reveal any names because she’s “not petty.”

What team are you on? Or are you just so over it?

7 Reasons We Love Grey's Anatomy's Alex—Despite What He Did in the Premiere

If you're a Grey's Anatomy fan (like we all are!), then you definitely watched the season 13 premiere tonight. After the cliffhanger at the end of season 12, it's no question that you were on the edge of your seat. For the past few months, Shonda Rhimes has been torturing us with spoilers—the secrets were finally unveiled and now we all want more.

As you may know, at the end of season 12, we all saw Alex Karev punch DeLuca because he thought DeLuca was fooling around with Jo. At the beginning of season 13, the viewers saw just how badly DeLuca was actually hurt, which made us think he was going to die. This insane drama left the burning questions, "Is DeLuca going to die?", "Will Alex get arrested?" and  "Why did Alex do this without talking to Jo?"

Fans everywhere were brought to tears when he turned himself in at the end of the episode, but we think that taking responsibility is the most mature thing Dr. Alex Karev has done in years.

Even though he committed a not-so-forgiveable act, Grey's Anatomy fans will forever love him for who he is. And here's why:

He takes responsibility for his actions

Karev has come a long way since his first few days on set. His character has gone from "I'm cool. I think I know everything." to "I'm turning myself in and accept what happened happened."

He loves and he loves hard

He has a soft side and found the perfect woman for him, and he proposed to her. Need we say more?

He knows how to encourage you

Alex Karev motivational speeches are the best kinds of motivational speeches.

He's honest and accepts himself

He accepts that he used to be a loser, but he also accepts the fact that he tells the truth no matter what. We would want Karev on our side in an argument, that's for sure.

He and Meredith are the ultimate BFF goals

Ever since day one, Karev and Meredith were best friends. Even though he was a total jerk the first few episodes, Shonda Rhimes matured these two into becoming the best of friends. Should Alex and Meredith date? Or should they stay strictly friends? Regardless of what you think, their chemistry in tonight's episode was OFF. THE. CHARTS.

He loves kids

Just one of the reasons why he makes the best pediatric surgeon ever. This melts our hearts.

He puts his colleagues first because they're family

Sloan Grey Memorial Hospital for life

What do you think, collegiettes? Do you still love Dr. Alex Karev? Or are you upset with what he did?

A Complete Guide on How to Go "No Poo"

0
0

If you haven’t heard of the “no poo” method, it isn’t exactly what it sounds like (phew!). The no poo method simply involves cutting out shampoo from your haircare routine to re-strengthen your strands. But getting started may be daunting, as there are a ton of different ways to become a no poo-er, and different methods work better for different people—so how do know which will work for you? We’ve talked to experts and no poo-ers themselves to find out as much as we can about the method.

What are the benefits of the no poo method?

Some of you may be wondering what the benefits of the no poo method are if you’ve been shampooing your whole life. Why change your routine now? What many people don’t know is that shampooing your hair can actually be pretty damaging. One of the main benefits of no poo is that you'll be avoiding the harmful toxins that unnatural shampoo formulas may utilize. These toxins can take a serious toll, making hair too dry (or too greasy), weaker and harder to grow out. Even worse, unhealthy ingredients can be found in unexpected places, like synthetic fragrances, which are one of the main (and most popular) damaging offenders on your shampoo's ingredients list.

Additionally, while shampoo cleans your hair, it also takes away the natural oils that make your hair healthy and soft. Using conditioner to supplement isn't an ideal solution either, as you’re actually just putting more chemicals in your hair. And if your hair gets greasy easily, it may be because it’s deprived of its natural oils and is therefore producing more.

So, if you want to reverse the damage done, the no poo method can do just that! Andrea Lavinthal, the Style and Beauty Director at PEOPLE, says, “Fans of the ‘no poo’ method say their hair feels softer, looks shinier and is generally healthier than it was when they were using standard shampoo. Plus, some replacements, like baking soda and apple cider vinegar, are a great option for people who prefer eco-friendly beauty products.” Lavinthal makes an important final point—the chemicals in shampoo get washed down the drain whenever you rinse, so by eliminating shampoo, you’re also potentially limiting the amount of chemicals being released into the world!

What are some common replacements for shampoo?

Luckily, there are a few different replacements for shampoo, so you’ll have plenty of chances to find a suitable alternative.Need help choosing? The porosity of your hair can help you determine which method will work best for you.

Baking soda and apple cider vinegar

“A combo of ‘washing’ with baking soda and ‘conditioning’ with apple cider vinegar is the most popular method,” Lavinthal says. Mix one part baking soda with about three to four parts water; you can apply this formula to wet or dry hair, massaging into the roots before rinsing. Then, combine one part apple cider vinegar with four parts water, and gently pour it evenly through your hair before rinsing it out.

Baking soda and apple cider vinegar are great for oil control. Chelle Ivancic, a sophomore at DePaul University, shares, “I was the one who originally took the nose dive in my family of four curly haired women. They were all worried about putting the vinegar on their hair. The way I see it, if I can put it on my salad then why not my head? After they saw how much my curls improved and the moisture level in my hair went up, they all jumped on board.” Need more proof? Chelle has been donating her hair for 14 years now because it is so healthy and grows so fast!

Cleansing conditioner

“Another option is to use regular conditioner or a cleansing conditioner (this is called ‘co-washing’). Cleansing conditioners are exactly what they sound like: conditioners that contain very mild cleansing agents,” notes Lavinthal. Wen, for example, has a great cleansing conditioner that doesn’t contain damaging ingredients.

Tabia Robinson, a senior at SUNY Albany, shares, “I don't use shampoo anymore because it dries out my hair. I am African American and I have natural hair and I find that shampoo of any kind always dries out my hair so now I just use conditioners to wash my hair and my hair is always bouncy and has sheen when I'm done.” Of course, if you find that just using conditioner makes your hair greasy (which it may), opt for something different.

Egg wash

Egg washes cleanse, condition and strengthen your hair. Even better, the protein in eggs can add volume, so this type of wash is especially good for those with thin hair. The downside? You must avoid warm water or the egg will start to scramble mid-shower! Another thing to keep in mind is that egg washes should only be done a couple times per month to avoid overdoing it on added protein.

Ready to try? Simply beat an egg, apply it to your wet hair, leave it in for 5 to 15 minutes and rinse with cool water.

Rye flour wash

The vitamins, minerals and nutrients in rye flour will make most people’s hair very shiny and smooth, and the more finely ground, the better. You can buy rye flour on Amazon.

To get started, mix about three tablespoons of rye flour with about three tablespoons of water, massage it into wet hair, leave it in for 5 to 15 minutes and fully rinse.

Water only

For the water method, all you have to do is rinse your hair with warm water, scritch and preen it (massage your scalp and use a boar bristle brush to pull the oil down your hair) and let it air dry. This method, however, does not work well with hard (mineral-rich) water.

Should you try the no poo method?

If you have overly dry or greasy hair, or are simply looking for a more natural, non-toxic way to care for your hair, give the no-poo method a try. “You can't really know if the no-poo method will be right for you until you try it,” Lavinthal advises.

“One caveat: You have to stick with it for a month or more since there's usually a notoriously icky transition period when your hair looks like a grease ball. But fans of the method swear that shiny, healthy hair will be waiting on the other side,” says Lavinthal. Most reports indicate that the entire transition period is about three months. During the first month your hair may be very greasy, while during the second month your hair may have a lot of static. Then, during the third month, your hair will start to look better but may be frizzy. After these three months are over, though, your hair will look better than ever!

That being said, not everyone will have a positive experience with the no poo method. Lindy Olive, a senior at Auburn University, says, “I have been doing the baking soda and apple cider vinegar instead of shampoo and conditioner for over two years. It has made my hair thick. However, it dried out my hair and I'm looking for a different method now. I used coconut oil and tea tree oil to replenish some of the oils, but it didn't help much, because it got so dry over time.” Unfortunately, since everyone has different proteins in their hair, each person’s hair will react differently to certain methods. “I encourage everyone to try it, but for me, it didn't work out,” says Lindy.

But if dryness from one method is the case for you, don't immediately lose hope! Co-washing and cleansing conditioners may be a better choice. “They're typically best for people with very dry, thick or curly hair,” Lavinthal shares. “Fine, straight hair might look greasy and heavy. The most important thing is to use more product than you normally do and scrub your scalp really well with your fingertips. This helps break down oils and remove residue from styling products." Once your hair has transitioned, you can introduce shampoo into your regimen without undoing all of that work! "If you like the way your hair looks, but your scalp is feeling itchy and gross, it's OK to use a clarifying shampoo every two weeks or so,”  Lavinthal says.

All in all, if you’re sick of your hair routine and are looking for something more healthy and natural, no poo is definitely worth a shot. You’ll have to stick it out for the first few months, but your devotion will be rewarded with longer, stronger and even more beautiful hair! So while it may take some getting used to, many swear that the results are worth it. Good luck, collegiettes!

10 Theories About Who's Dead (& Who's Not) on 'How to Get Away with Murder'

0
0

Last night’s How to Get Away with Murder premiere was bonkers, as expected. But it ended by kicking off another big season-long murder mystery. Of course, we don’t know whose dead body is being rolled out on a gurney as Annalise’s home goes up in flames at the end of the episode. So we’ve decided to theorize about who is and is not dead below.

Annalise

Why she’s dead: She’s not.

Why she’s not: We’ve already seen Annalise alive at the end of the episode, arriving at the scene to discover someone is dead.

Wes

Why he’s dead: He is very close to Annalise’s heart and would illicit that type of reaction from the professor if she discovered he was the corpse beneath the white sheet.

Why he’s not: Wes is a firestarter, causing drama wherever he goes, and much of the murdering surrounds him and his actions. Would the killing suddenly stall without Wes in the picture?

Laurel

Why she’s dead: Frank seems to be the central bad guy this season. Maybe his ties to Laurel get too messy and she becomes collateral damage.

Why she’s not: We don’t think Frank would ever really harm Laurel. Plus, we’re still waiting to see this Wes/Laurel chemistry play out.

Michaela

Why she’s dead: Michaela never wanted to be a part of this life and hasn’t been shy about telling Annalise just that. Perhaps she threatens the group’s secrets and has to be eliminated.

Why she’s not: She seemed like she was back on her game in the premiere’s court sequences, leading us to believe she’s on track to becoming Annalise’s mini-me.

Asher

Why he’s dead: Asher has always been the mouthiest of the Keating Five. He could slip up and reveal everything, making him a liability that would have to be dealt with.

Why he’s not: Two words: Comic. Relief. This is an intense world these characters are living in. What would it be without Asher’s humorous additions?

Connor

Why he’s dead: With his relationship with Oliver seemingly dunzo, Connor really has nothing to lose, making his departure sort of a clean break.

Why he’s not: We still believe Connor and Ollie have a shot, and we don’t think the show would sacrifice its one real relationship just to kill Connor off.

Oliver

Why he’s dead: Up until now, Connor has been able to keep Oliver away from Annalise’s messy dealings. But with his new job title, could he cross a line and get too deep into the Keating Five’s shady affairs?

Why he’s not: Ollie is still the sweetest, most innocent of the bunch, so we have to hold out hope that some humanity will continue to exist in this world.

Bonnie

Why she’s dead: Bonnie is still harboring the secret that she killed Rebecca. Surely that will come back to haunt her, as Frank killing Lila did to him.

Why she’s not: Bonnie is Annalise’s right-hand woman, and with Frank gone, she seems to be the only thing holding the firm together.

Nate

Why he’s dead: Even though he’s on the police force and sometimes keeps the gang out of trouble with the law, Nate is kind of expendable at this point.

Why he’s not: If another of Annalise’s lovers is murdered, she is for sure going to jail.

Frank

Why he’s dead: Maybe Frank is not the killer the show is making him out to be—a classic red herring that would give the reveal major shock factor later in the season.

Why he’s not: The trailer shown at the end of the premiere led us to believe Frank is the killer behind this particular murder.
