Rowan Blanchard Will Wow You With Her Perfect Explanation of Intersectional Feminism

With Taylor Swift being the target of many campaigns discussing “white feminism,” it’s no surprise that people all over the world are talking about what exactly it means to be an intersectional feminist. One woman who describes it perfectly is Girl Meets World star, Rowan Blanchard.

According to Refinery29, in a recent interview with The Cut, Blanchard hit the nail on the head, saying, “My first definition of feminism was so small: Men and women should be equal. And maybe that’s how you have to learn it, so that it can be more accessible.”

But this didn’t just come to her suddenly. Over time, she started “discovering Audre Lorde and Angela Davis and all of these intricacies of feminism that were not being presented to me by these white feminist ‘icons.'” And it didn’t sit well with her.

“It was only then that I realized how deep it is and how it’s more about undoing these walls that we have built around marginalized people — it’s not just about women and men. It’s the fact that the walls for me are different than the walls for Amandla [Stenberg],” she said.

Because she is *way* ahead of where most 14-year-olds are in this debate, she added that feminism is more than fighting for equality of men and women. It is about “undoing patriarchal structures against marginalized people,” which include LGBTQ, disabled and colored women.

Yes, girl. Yes. Let’s all take note.

Nick Viall Might Be The Most Sex-Positive Bachelor Ever

Maybe some of you are still recovering from the fact that Luke Pell won't be our next Bachelor, and others of you are already partying on the Nick Viall train, but after a recent interview with People, we all have to agree that Nick is the most sex-positive Bachelor the franchise has ever had. The fantasy suite used to be a questionable, sexual mystery until Nick famously told the world that he slept with Andi Dorfman and had some super intimate relations with Kaitlyn Bristowe, too.

From the ladies' perspectives, you'd probably want to set him on fire for outing your sexual history, but Nick was so sweet about the whole thing we just couldn't be mad. When asked if he regrets spilling the beans on live TV, he answered, "I regret that in the sense that it unnecessarily and unfairly caused Andi to get a lot of flack. I wasn't trying to accomplish that. Women have as much right as men to do whatever they want behind closed doors." Damn right, Nick.

He also added that "sex isn't a taboo thing. I'm an open book so I don't mind the fact that it's out there. People are well aware of the fact that Andi and I slept together, as well Kaitlyn and I, but I slept with two women that at the time I felt deeply for and thought there was a good chance I could end up with."

With Nick's sexual history, does this mean we can expect a lot more fantasy suite action on his season? Probably. We'd rather have somebody who views it positively and isn't afraid to talk about sex instead of hiding it and being shameful. Whatever happens, we just hope he FINALLY finds love.

Gigi Hadid Starts Her Day With This Disgusting AF Food

Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik are hands down the most beautiful couple to grace our lives this year, and any time Gigi dishes on what she loves most about him we're pretty much foaming at the mouth. In a recent interview with ES Magazine, she mentioned that they "cook a lot together" and that Zayn has gotten her "super into" British food. What British food is Gigi the most obsessed with? Gross AF Heinz baked beans.

We don't completely understand how one of the most beautiful women in the world could start her day with something so gag-worthy, but apparently everybody has flaws. She added that Zayn is a fabulous cook that makes to-die-for curry and that "butter chicken is his signature dish." It's so nice to know that "Z" and Gigi are still our relationships goals, despite the fact that beans are suddenly in the mix. Honestly though, we'd probably eat anything Zayn cooked for us...because, you know, Zayn.

Missouri Woman Still Missing After Her Burnt-Out SUV Was Found

A burnt SUV was found in Kansas City on Saturday, and now police are searching for its driver, who has been missing since Thursday. Jessica Runions, 21, was last seen in the SUV on Thursday night, according to Kansas City police.

"Just locating her vehicle in that condition—that's just suspicious in nature and we're concerned for her welfare," police spokeswoman Captain Stacey Graves told KSHB.

Runion's aunt, Michele, told KSHB that Jessica was seen leaving a party on Thursday accompanied by Kylr Yust, her boyfriend's friend. Her boyfriend had left the party early, leaving Runions behind with Yust.

In an update on the case, KSHB News revealed that Yust has been arrested in connection with Runions' dissapearance. He is being held on a $50,000 bond.

This isn't the first time Yust has been connected with a disappearance. In 2007, his ex-girlfriend Kara Kopetsky filed a restraining order against him after making accusations of domestic violence, then disappeared. Yust was never charged in the case, and Kopetsky was never found. Additionally in 2011, Yust's girlfriend, who was six months pregnant at the time, claimed that Yust assaulted her, causing her to lose consciousness. She claims he admitted to having "killed ex-girlfriends out of jealousy," according to KSHB. Yust's record also includes animal cruelty (for killing two of his 2011 girlfriend's kittens), stealing from a tattoo shop, and drug trafficking.

"It's out of character—her not calling, not responding," said Michele Runions, Jessica’s aunt. "We just want her home safe."

4 Ways Your Friends are Beneficial to Your Health

$

Friends. We can’t live with them and we can’t live without them. No, seriously. We all know that friendship (or any sort of human interaction) can be a bit stressful at times. It’s much easier to avoid the general population and declare that Netflix and your bed are your true best friends, but a little party never killed nobody, and your friends are pretty much living proof of that. They can actually give you a little more of a mental boost than you think and we’re here to tell you how.

1. They help you get more sleep

A University of Chicago professor named John Cacioppo completed a study about how beneficial social connection is to mental health. According to Cacioppo, loneliness is a source of unhappiness. The lonelier you are, the more you tend to toss and turn at night. It might be a little hard to believe that as a busy college student, there’s anything that can keep you from passing out as soon as you hit the sheets; however, there is a chance that keeping your distance from the people around you might result in some insomnia-filled nights.

2. They help you relax

There’s actually evidence (in the form of a psychological study) that proves having a shoulder to cry on can improve your health and reduce your stress levels. According to the observations of Laura Cousino Klein and Shelley Taylor, being able to lean on a friend when you’re going through a rough time can actually benefit you more than you think. The two researchers discovered that women produce greater amounts of oxytocin (a hormone that has an anti-depressant-like effect) during social interaction. Think of all of those times when you’ve been so relieved after venting to your best friend about a romantic fling that didn’t exactly turn out how you expected. Brittany Couch, a senior at the University of Georgia, is the perfect example. "I appreciate having friends around me when I'm going through a hard time because they offer me a different type of support system than other people," she says. "Talking to my friends when there's an issue works out so much better for me because it gives me a chance to get out of my own head and feel like my feelings are validated." This is just another reason to have friends that are there for you when the going gets tough.

3. They give you more self-control

If you have pretty strong friends, you’re in luck. Being around people that have a strong sense of willpower makes it easier for you to exert more restraint in everyday situations. Michelle vanDellen, a psychology professor at the University of Georgia, explains in a study that people are less likely to act out in the presence of their friends because of how their behavior might affect other people. “The take-home message of this study is that picking social influences that are positive can improve your self-control,” she told Best Health Magazine. “And by exhibiting self-control, you’re helping others around you do the same." Brittany also points out that, when it comes to decision-making, it's important for her to look at things from the outside. "Anytime I'm faced with making a difficult decision, I think of the 'eagle eye,'" she says. "I feel like someone is always watching and every decision I make affects the people I know in some way or another."

4. They increase your sense of belonging

College can be a pretty tough journey for some of us, so it's important for us to have friends that we can lean on when it's time to put the books away and have a good time. There's comfort in knowing that you have a group of friends you can call the family that you never had. "I moved from Atlanta to New York and I definitely remember being homesick for quite some time," says Amber Ferrell, a senior at Columbia University. "I can't leave campus and go see my family as often as some of my friends can so it was really important for me to find a group of people that I knew I could feel at home with while being so far away from what I'm used to." According to a piece written in Psychology Today by Dr. Karyn Hall, friends make you feel like you're a part of something bigger. "A sense of belonging to a greater community improves your motivation, health and happiness," she writes. "When you see your connection to others, you know that all people struggle and have difficult time. You are not alone. There is comfort in that knowledge."

Sometimes growing up means doing your best to avoid social interaction at all costs. There’s nothing wrong with wanting a little alone time but just remember that no matter how often your friends may get on your nerves, you should embrace them because they’re helping you live a stronger, healthier life.

This Is What Rory Has Been Doing Since 'Gilmore Girls' Ended

We are just as invested in Rory Gilmore's love life as the next Gilmore Girls fan. But we're eager to see another mysterious part of Rory's life revealed in the Netflix revival: What career path did she end up on?

Alexis Bledel, who plays the younger Lorelai Gilmore, is finally dishing on Rory’s life since Yale. In an interview with Us Weekly, Bledel shares that Rory did in fact become a journalist like she always wanted to.

"She has been working hard, as she does," Bledel says. "She started her work as a journalist at the same time that newspapers were going away. Her field changed dramatically as she was just kind of getting up and running. So that’s where we pick up with her."

But Bledel also notes that Rory hasn’t taken the typical 9-to-5 route.

"It’s real time, so it’s been about eight years that she’s been living a bit of a vagabond lifestyle, kind of chasing each story that she becomes passionate about and wants to tell," Bledel reveals. She also adds that Rory’s been "crashing on couches and staying with friends" instead of "planting roots anywhere."

No matter what she’s up to these days, we can’t wait for the premiere of the revival. On November 25, you’ll find us planted on the couch, stuffing our faces with Thanksgiving leftovers—along with coffee and Pop-Tarts, of course!

Conviction Overturned for Roommate of Suicide Victim Tyler Clementi

Last Friday, The New York Times reported that a New Jersey appeals court discarded convictions against the former roommate of Tyler Clementi, the Rutgers University freshman who committed suicide six years ago after being unknowingly filmed while having sex with another man.

In the fall of 2010, ex-roommate Dharun Ravi used a webcam to secretly capture Clementi’s sexual encounter in their dorm room and then broadcasted it on social media for others to watch. Three days later Clementi ended his life by jumping off the George Washington Bridge where his body was recovered a week later.

The case became national news as LGBTQ+ rights activists seized the opportunity to showcase LGBTQ+ bullying and discrimination.

Although Ravi was not charged with Clementi’s death, he was initially convicted in 2012 on several charges including invasion of privacy, bias intimidation and tampering with evidence. Advocate.com reported that Ravi paid for his crimes by serving 20 days in jail, 300 hours of community service and paying $10K to a state-affiliated group which helps victims of hate crimes.

At the time, most of Ravi’s charges fell under a state statute on bias intimidations which, according to the Times, declared “… defendants could be convicted if their victims ‘reasonably believed’ that they were harassed or intimidated because of a characteristic such as race or sexual orientation.”

However, last year the New Jersey Supreme Court declared this law unconstitutional, resulting in the court in Ravi’s case throwing out charges associated with it. The Timeswent on to note that the court also determined that the evidence prosecutors used against Ravi in alignment with this statute “tainted the jury’s verdict on the remaining charges and deprived Mr. Ravi of a fair trial.”

NJ.com writes that prosecutors in Middlesex County have 20 days to decide whether to appeal or press the same charges against Ravi again.

After their son’s death, Joe and Jane Clementi founded The Tyler Clementi Foundation to fight bullying and highlight LGBT youth suicides. The Clementis’ response to the court’s decision can be found in full on the foundation’s website:

“ … Today’s decision shows us how much more work there is to be done, and will push us forward with stronger determination to create a kinder more empathic society where every person is valued and respected. We will continue to work even harder sharing Tyler’s story through the Tyler Clementi Foundation and our many partners.”

Kentucky Governor Says Blood Will Be Shed if Clinton Wins Presidency

Matt Bevin, the first-term Republican governor of Kentucky, said at the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C. last weekend that while the country could “recover” from a Clinton presidency, blood would be shed in the quest to “reclaim” the country.

“I do think it would be possible,” for the country to recover, he said, according to The Atlantic, “but at what price?”

“Whose blood will be shed? It may be that of those in this room. It might be that of our children and grandchildren...Don’t let it happen.”

According to the Associated Press, the governor’s office later clarified that Bevin was speaking of military lives that could be lost if Clinton follows in President Obama’s footsteps in dealing with ISIS, saying, “We cannot be complacent about the determination of radical Islamic extremists to destroy our freedoms.”

Later in his speech, he mentioned other controversial issues, like abortion, and encouraged Christians to be vocal about their opinions.

“Look at the atrocity of abortion, so many have remained silent,” he said. “It’s a slippery slope. First we’re killing children, then it’s ‘don’t ask don’t tell.’ Now it’s this gender-bending, don’t ask, don’t be a bigot, don’t be unreasonable, don’t be unenlightened, heaven forbid.”

As far as controversy following his statements goes, Bevin says not to take his words out of context.

“I would encourage anyone who truly cares about this issue to invest 15 minutes of time and listen to my comments in their entirety,” he said. “Any intelligent person will easily understand the message I delivered.”

Ohio University Cuts Ties with Former Fox CEO Roger Ailes After Sexual Harassment Allegations

After allegations of sexual harassment led to his resignation from the CEO position with Fox News, Ohio University alumnus Roger Ailes has had a gift of $500,000 to the school returned to him, and his name removed from a campus newsroom.

According to Cleveland.com, after Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson accused the former CEO of sexual harassment in July, several other women came forward with similar stories. While Fox paid Carlson a settlement of $20 million in response to the issue, and publically apologized, according to the Associated Press, the allegations prompted Ailes to resign from his position at Fox, which he has held since 1996, when the channel launched.

“Given the allegations against Mr. Ailes, the circumstances surrounding his departure from Fox News, I've decided to return his gift and remove his name,” OU President Roderick McDavis said at a faculty senate meeting, according to student newspaper The Post. “The distraction from the teaching of the Scripps College of Communication has weighed heavily on my mind as I deliberated over the sustained effect on our university community should we continue to have our newsroom named for Mr. Ailes.”

In addition to his large 2007 donation toward a more technologically advanced newsroom, Ailes has gifted several scholarships to students over the years, which OU says will continue.

Director of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at OU, Robert Stewart, is happy with the McDavis’s decision, and glad to put the incident behind him.

“I applaud President McDavis’ decision,” Stewart told Cleveland.com. “The controversy has helped shine a spotlight on the ongoing problem of sexual harassment in the workplace, but it's a relief to have the name and plaque removed.”

Should You Download iOS 10? Here's All The Problems Users Are Having With It

$

The latest software from technology giant Apple—iOS 10—was just released for download in the U.S. on Tuesday, and will be shipped out with iPhone 7 and iPhone7 Plus next week. If you haven’t already heard, “new” doesn’t necessarily mean “better” for thousands of Apple users around the world, who are complaining about the software update and yearning for the simpler times of iOS 9.

iOS 10 Update ‘Bricked’ Users’ Phones and iPads

The first problem with Apple’s newest update became apparent for some users right away when, upon trying to download and install iOS 10, their iPhones and iPads “bricked.” Essentially, they became unusable after trying to download the software. An error message alerted users that they would need to plug the device into a computer and restore the entire operating system before it would become usable again.

According to The Verge, an Apple spokesperson said in a statement, “We experienced a brief issue with the software update process, affecting a small number of users during the first hour of availability. The problem was quickly resolved and we apologize to those customers.”

Despite the so-called “quick” solution to this problem, people were still pretty annoyed when they were in class or at work, away from their PCs and Macs, unable to even get their phones to turn on. Even worse, people were still reporting on Wednesday that the update bricked their phones.

Besides the obvious downfalls of an update that sends iPhones and iPads into the first-world terror that is known as “recovery mode,” iOS 10 users seem happy with their shiny, new software. It packs Star Wars stickers, cool new emojis, customizable widgets and even balloons that pop up on a message screen when you send someone the text “Happy Birthday!”

Other common issues that people have been experiencing seem to be fixable, at least, with a quick change of simple settings.

Bad Battery Life

Tech Radar suspects that iOS 10.1, Apple’s first bug fixing update for iOS 10, will fix many mini-problems that iOS 10 has. Until then, techies suggest going into your settings and turning off background app refresh.

Settings > General > Background App Refresh

You can pick and choose which apps you don’t need to be constantly updating, or you can shut off the feature for all of them. You can also turn off Fitness Tracking, if you want, within the privacy tab of settings, or you can opt to keep WiFi off if you’re not at home. Of course, dimming the brightness on your device doesn’t hurt, either.

You Hate the New Unlock Feature

One of the hardest features to get used to in iOS 10 is the new way you have to unlock your iPhone or iPad. Instead of swiping right to unlock, Apple’s latest software makes you press on the home button in order for Touch ID to unlock your phone.

It definitely will take some practice and going against current muscle memory to learn the new unlocking technique. However, if you’re a stickler for stagnation and routine, you can go back to the good ol’ days pretty easily. Go to:

Settings > General > Accessibility > Home Button, then turn on “Rest Finger to Open.”

Voilà! You may now happily unlock your iPad or iPhone by simply resting your finger on the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, without having to press down on it.

Songs and Ringtones Have Vanished

One of the more terrifying problems is to go into your Music Library or your Ringtones settings and see that all of the iTunes purchases you’ve begrudgingly made are suddenly, gasp, gone.

This issue, which is fairly common with all of Apple’s updates, is thankfully a quick fix. Simply plug your iPad or iPhone into your computer, go to iTunes, and sync “Tones” to your device.

Most of the problems associated with iOS 10 are thankfully fixable and reversible. However, having your iPad or iPhone get bricked by the software would not be fun. If you decide to wait for Apple to iron out the bugs with its newest software before you make the switch, you're not alone. Business Insider reported only up to one-third of Apple users have decided to download the new iOS, while the rest are waiting it out a few more weeks.

Our verdict? Feel free to download iOS 10 without fear, but make sure to back-up your device beforehand and have your PC or Mac nearby if anything goes wrong.

The Internet *Really* Doesn't Want Disney to Whitewash Mulan in the Live-Action Film

$

0

Both Disney and Sony have live-action versions of Mulan in the works, and people are worried they’re going to cast white actors to play the Asian characters in the story.

They are so worried, in fact, that a Care2 petition has been created to beg the filmmakers not to whitewash this story like they have in other recent films. According to the petition, which already has over 90,000 signatures, “Mulan was based on a Chinese legend, the story of Fa/Hua Mu Lan, in which a young girl disguises herself as a man to serve as a soldier in the battle against an invasion launched by the Huns. The character, story, and fans deserve the best retelling of the story Disney can produce.”

You may recall that after the release of last summer’s Aloha, many moviegoers were upset that Emma Stone—who, as she herself told Refinery29, is “so white”—was cast as a character who is supposed to be a quarter Chinese, quarter Hawaiian and half Swedish. This isn’t the first time Hollywood has whitewashed a cast, but people are so over it.

Besides creating and signing the petition, many have taken to social media to express their outrage and concern.

But they’re also using social media to give their own suggestions as to who should star in the film.

Whitewashing is not only detrimental to actors of racial minorities but also to the audiences attending these movies. It is important for people of every race, gender and background to feel properly represented in the media, but it’s especially important that we give young people proper role models to whom they can relate. All they want is to see themselves in these stories, and they deserve that.

Leaked Colin Powell Emails Show The Former Secretary of State Bashing Trump

Former secretary of state Colin Powell became the most recent victim of hackers when DCLeaks.com, a site with alleged links to Russian intelligence agents, leaked his personal emails, many of which comment on the election and Trump's movement of "racism."

According to BuzzFeed News, which read and reported on the leaked emails, Powell slams Republican nominee Donald Trump throughout his personal correspondences, saying he is a "national disgrace" and an "international pariah."

One instance of Trump's disgracing America, in Powell's view, was recounted in an August 2016 email from him to Emily Miller, his former aide and a current journalist. Powell wrote that Trump was racist for trying to spark the belief President Obama was not born in the U.S. "Yup, the whole birth movement was racist," he wrote. "That's what the 99% believe. When Trump couldn't keep that up he said he also wanted to see if the certificate noted that he was a Muslim."

"As I have said before, 'What if he was?' Muslims are born as Americans everyday," Powell continued to Miller, before detailing Obama's merits, like graduating from Harvard Law School.

Powell also wrote in a May 2016 email, "As I said before the 2012 election, 'There is a level of intolerance in parts of the Republican Party." The email's subject line read, "racism."

As if his feelings on Trump were not already clear, Powell wrote in an email to CNN anchor Fareed Zakaria, "You guys are playing his game, [the press is] his oxygen."

The December 2015 email continued, saying, "He outraged us again today with his comments on Paris no-go for police districts. I will watch and pick the timing, not respond to the latest outrage." Thanks to DCLeaks.com, of course, that timing is now.

Powell did not just stick to the topic of Donald Trump. As it is an important and divisive presidential election this year, Powell also commented on another former secretary of state, current Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. This time, he talked about the email controversy.

Back in August, media outlets noted that Clinton often referred to Powell, saying that she chose to use a personal email because he advised her to.

In an August 2016 email to NBC News reporter Andrea Mitchell, Powell claimed his advice was a little different than what the Clinton party wanted the public to believe. According to BuzzFeed News, Powell wrote, "I told her how I was using my personal computer for [unclassified] emails. I said nothing about servers, basements, domains, Clinton foundation, [or] government employees."

"I have told Hilleary's [sic] minions repeatedly that they are making a mistake trying to drag me in, yet they still try," wrote Powell this May in another email. "The media isn't fooled and she is getting crucified...The differences are profound and they know it."

In August, he wrote, "Sad thing it that HRC could have killed this two years ago by merely telling everyone honestly what she had done and not tie me into it. I told her staff three times not to try that gambit. I had to throw a mini tantrum at a Hampton’s party to get their attention. She keeps tripping into these ‘character’ minefields."

He didn't stop at the emails, either; he attacked her character, too, calling her "greedy, not-transformational" and declaring in one email, "Everything HRC touches she kind of screws up with hubris." He also added that despite his personal relationship with the Clintons, he would "rather not have to vote for her."

That's a lot of political commentary for someone who publicly remains calm and, for the most part, somewhat quiet. As a public figure, having your emails leaked can be unnerving. However, Powell told BuzzFeed, "I have no further comment. I'm not denying it."

The former secretary of state's words of wisdom, frustrations and honest remarks are now out there for everyone, so it makes sense that he won't even bother to deny it. At least we can all stop wondering what Powell was really thinking about Trump's speedy rise to power.

Canadian Judge Who Told Rape Victim to "Keep Her Knees Shut" May Lose His Job

A Canadian judge may lose his federal court position after comments he made in a sexual assault case back in 2014, where the alleged attacker, Alexander Wagar, sexually assaulted a woman over a bathroom sink at a house party. During the sexual assault trial, the judge, Robin Camp, asked the victim that “why couldn’t [she] just keep [her] knees together,” The Huffington Post reports.

It was further reported that Camp asked the victim why she couldn’t “sink [her] bottom down into the basin so he couldn’t penetrate you” and stated that “Young wom[e]n want to have sex, particularly if they're drunk,” HuffPost reports.

According to HuffPost Canada, The victim reported that Camp’s comments “made [her] hate [herself] and he made [her] feel like [she] should have done something.” Camp’s comments made the victim contemplate suicide.

Camp ultimately acquitted the perpetrator, but his verdict was later overturned on appeal, HuffPost reports.

According to CNN, Camp has been in a week-long judicial council hearing after three legal academics filed a complaint in regards to the comments he made, and may ultimately determine whether he will lose his position.

Alice Woolley, one of several legal experts at the University of Calgary who filed complaints against Camp, stated, “I hope that they will look at all of the issues raised by his decision — not only his treatment of the complainant, which was truly appalling, but also his disregard for the law.”

Camp has since apologized for the comments he has made, stating that he was “rude and facetious.” A justice, a law professor and a psychologist who were paid by Camp to mentor him after his comments all told the hearing that he has worked hard to learn from this experience, HuffPost Canada reports. They claimed that Camp had minimal knowledge about sexual assault law and had not been formally trained on how to conduct a sexual assault trial.

The council has stated that Camp “engaged in stereotypical or biased thinking in relation to a sexual assault complainant.”

After the hearing, the council will send its recommendation for Camp to the full Canadian Judicial Council, CNN reports.

This phrase usually comes after you’ve said something irresistibly hilarious. Instead of "ily," it's "ilm."

You’re a catch, and you know it. Everyone else just isn’t as woke as you are yet.

4. You tattooed your own name on your body

13. You often use songs like “Feeling Myself” and “Pretty Girl Rock” to soundtrack your life

When you can’t verbally describe the love you have for yourself, you can always count on Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé to say the words for you.

14.  You’re your own worst critic

All jokes aside, as your own one true love, you always have your best interests at heart. And sometimes that requires a little bit of tough love.

15. You accept the love that you truly deserve

Though you’re your one true love, you also know that there’s someone out there who could potentially be your other one true love. You’re not in a hurry to find him or her because you know that it’s better to be happy by yourself than simply content with Mr./Mrs. Right Now. Rather than accepting the love you think you deserve, you're waiting to find love with a companion that you know you deserve. Why? Well, because you love yourself.

The past decade has brought about many things, from social media to Netflix to Justin Bieber to the rise of Chipotle…to a generation of guys who think ungentlemanly things are cool AF. Like the old saying goes, collegiettes, boys will be boys. Although they get under our skin every minute of every day, we can't live without them… or can we? Read below for 11 things only women who have been dissapointed by men understand.

1. If you tell them to leave you alone, they probably will

"I said leave me alone, but I didn't actually mean to leave me alone—you just don't fucking get it!"

2. Any girl who expresses herself is deemed crazy

Newsflash: it's not insane to be human.

3. The tools mean nothing if you don't know how to use them

A man in the streets is not necessarily a freak in the sheets. *dissappointed sigh*

4. Texting novels is never successful

You could send an 800-page hardcover book and still get a one-word response.

5. Denial isn't just a river in Egypt

"She's just my friend but we do hook up every weekend but I don't like her but I don't want to lose her but yeah we're friends." #OK

6. They're non-committal

It's alarming how easily some guys let go of the most amazing girls.

7. They don't really think anything is a big deal

PSA: Telling a girl that the thing she's upset about isn't a "big deal" will absolutely make it an even bigger deal.

8. They don't know how to talk about their emotions

Seriously, you ask them how they feel and they act as if you asked them to murder someone.

9. Douchebags love being douchebags

Ladies, you know exactly what we mean.

10. Unwarranted sexual advances are never cute

No means no, dude.

11. They just don't get it

And by "it" we mean legitimately everything.

7 Signs You’re in Love

For most of us, love is a far-off, abstract concept. Even in a long-term, committed relationship, the existence of love can be difficult to spot. What is the difference between strong feelings and true love? Is love at first sight actually a possibility? The answer to these questions may be different for everyone. It depends on your personality, your relationship style and a multlitude of other unique factors. If you have found yourself questioning whether or not you are truly in love, ask yourself if these signs apply to your relationship.

1. You totally trust your partner

All healthy relationships require a high level of trust. Whether it's just a friendship or something more, everyone wants to be able to trust the people that they are closest to in their lives. Jay Hurt, author of The 9 Tenants of a Successful Relationship, says, "Trust is extremely important in any serious relationship and definitely something that people should be aware of before deciding if they are in love or not.”

If you are unable to trust your partner with little, daily things, how can you trust them with your heart? If you are questioning whether or not you are in love, ask yourself if you would be able to really trust your partner with anything and everything. If the answer is yes, you're one step closer to being in love.

2. You and your partner have established an agreement of commitment

In today’s society, the importance of commitment is often overlooked. Hook-up culture is rampant throughout our generation and due to this infatuation, many of us rarely feel a need to settle down or define the relationship. This is totally fine if that is what you want, but it can be hard to be truly in love with someone if you aren’t committed to one another.

One student, Karen Smith*, a sophomore at the University of Florida, says that an establishment of commitment was actually a big part of her realization that she was in love with her boyfriend. “Knowing that my boyfriend was committed to only me and never having to worry about losing him to another person made me feel safe and made it easier to know that I was in love,” she says. This is a common feeling for many collegiettes, especially in an age where commitment is not that popular.

3. There is a high level of intimacy (that isn’t just sexual)

It isn’t uncommon for people to confuse sexual attraction with love. Hurts says that in order to truly have love, you must have a level of intimacy that goes further than just sexual intimacy. This intimacy is something similar to that of what you might have with your closest friends. Hurt describes this intimacy as “something that has grown the relationship even deeper.”

Non-sexual intimacy can come in many forms and thus, can be hard to identify. When you've reached a high level of intimacy with someone, you'll feel truly comfortable with them. Little things like sharing the bed or confiding in them will no longer be uncomfortable, but will be a typical part of your day together. True intimacy can be found when you and your partner start to feel like one person, rather than two separate people, unattached from one another.

4. You find yourself wanting to share experiences with your partner, rather than alone

When you are truly in love, you will find that every experience you go through is enhanced by sharing it with your partner. Good or bad, you feel a strong desire to have them by your side, rather than explaining the event to them later.

Leah Pignataro, a junior at the University of Florida, believes that this concept definitely rings true. She says it is easy to know that you are in love “when you look forward to doing things together instead of doing it alone and telling them about it.”

Wanting to share experiences with your partner doesn’t mean that you will never need alone time — that's totally normal to need, even when you are in love. However, beginning to factor in your partner when thinking of future events and having difficulty imagining going through certain things without them is definitely a sure sign of love.

5. You feel a void when you and your partner are apart

Anyone who has ever been bitten by the love bug has been introduced to a whole new level of missing her partner. Hurt describes this voided feeling as going “beyond missing them.” He says that “you feel like they should be there.”

Realizing that you and your partner have become so close that you feel as though you are missing a part of yourself when you are not together is a sure way to know that you’re  in love.

6. You have no issue being truly selfless when it comes to your relationship

Humans are selfish by nature; it's simply a fact. Even if you do selfless deeds often or strive to make the world a better place, we are designed to put our own needs first. The only thing that can really change this predisposition is the presence of love.

When you fall in love, your partner becomes just as important as yourself. When out of love, people must make sure that their needs are met on their own — no one else is responsible for making sure that you are happy. However, in a real relationship where you are both in love, both partners are getting their needs met because both are making sure that their partner is happy.

7. You seek comfort in each other

While being comfortable with your partner is certainly important, seeking them for comfort goes far beyond that. Rachel Kline, a senior at the University of Florida, says that one way she knew she was in love with her long-term boyfriend was when they both began to seek comfort in each other.

When you fall in love, your partner becomes your go-to person for nearly everything. They're the person you want to talk to when you find out exciting news, the person you want to cuddle up to after a long day and the person you want to talk our all of your problems with.

These signs are certainly not the only ways that someone can know they are in love. Love is a feeling. It's not something rational or easy to explain with facts or examples. More often than not, if you feel that you're in love, you very well are. However, if you find yourself questioning the sincerity of the love, you may want to consider these questions.

3 Ways to Step Out of Your Fashion Comfort Zone

$

You want to try out a new style, but you have no idea where to start. Thanks to HC, it’s much easier than you think! Here’s your complete guide to branching out and making your (fashion) mark.

1. Find inspiration

Are you bored with your wardrobe? There are so many places to look for style inspo! You could start by flipping through the pages of your favorite magazine or browsing HC’s Style section (duh!). Bloggers also have amazing fashion tips, so we asked two fashionistas where they get their inspiration.

The people around you, as well as online influencers, are a great place to start, according to Suzy at The Kawaii Planet. “My biggest inspiration[s] are actually mainly other fashion bloggers that I follow,” Suzy says. “I let real people influence my style and I love seeing other fashion bloggers wear something that I would never opt for. It sort of helps me to open my mind to the new styles.”

Want to travel without spending all of your savings (or lack thereof)? Do so by taking fashion tips from and dressing like fashionistas everywhere from Milan to Tokyo instead! “My style has been created through the years and everywhere I traveled, I learned something new about fashion,” Suzy says. “Leggings always add a little bit of a British wind to my style, pastel pieces remind me of Japan, sexy dresses evoke Italy and elegant collar style takes me to France.”

Marie Goldstein at ThePreppyMAG is inspired by legendary prepsters: “I have role models like Coco Chanel and Jackie Kennedy from the olden days and role models like Sarah Vickers, Kate Middleton, and even imaginary ones like Blair Waldorf,” Marie says. “When I’m not surfing the latest blogs for inspiration I love to be inspired by the city I live in. I can seriously sit in TriBeCa or SoHo and watch the different trends go by.” An excuse to people watch? We can get on board with that!

2. Take it slow

If you’re used to wearing jeans and a t-shirt every day, showing up to class in metallic leggings and a fedora is probably the last thing you want to (or should) do. But when it comes to branching out, small changes can make a big difference!

If your style is...

Girly

You love pretty dresses and dainty jewelry, but you’re ready to give your style a bit of an edge. Why not go for some buckled booties to contrast your collection of pastels? Chunky jewelry is also an easy way to go bold without pulling a full fashion 180. We love this statement necklace from Charlotte Russe!

So you love your gym-chic pieces, but you want to take your style to the next level. Don’t worry, collegiettes—your beloved yoga leggings can stay! Try pairing them with a flowy blouse or button-down and some elegant flats for an instant outfit upgrade.

Prep is your life, but some occasions call for a more understated outfit. “Although my head is always in a preppy state of mind, I have found myself tone it down since I moved to NYC,” Marie says. “Sometimes you can find me in a good pair of skinny jeans, a chambray shirt, and sneakers—this is what I like to call ad agency chic.” For all you Lilly Pulitzer lovers who want a change, you don’t need to get rid of those bright prints and monograms; instead, use them to make your simple ensemble a little more fun!

On the other hand, if you’re used to wearing lots of basics, prep might be just the way to spice things up. “Being preppy is about being bold and confident,” Marie says. “Trust me, I know it’s not easy to walk onto a city block in a bright neon dress when everyone else is wearing black but you need to OWN IT. I would start out with some Vineyard Vines, J.Crew and make your way to some bright and vibrant prints at Lilly Pulitzer.” We love these bold Lilly shorts, which will brighten up any look without being over-the-top.

Boho

If festival wear is your thing but you want to look a little sleeker, it’s easy! Just throw on an elegant jacket over your favorite hippie chic dress—and voilà!

3. Have fun with it & be yourself

Suzy loves experimenting with different trends to create her own unique style—and so should you! “I don't necessarily follow all the fashion trends and rules,” Suzy says. “When I shop for myself, it really comes out of my head only and I simply decide based on what I think would look good on me.”

Stepping out of your comfort zone doesn’t have to be scary! “Fashion is fun for me and I enjoy coming up with various combinations and looks,” Suzy says. “Have you seen something cool in the magazine that you would like to try? Go for it! Put it on for the weekend and see how you feel. Nothing should stop you from wearing pieces you like.”

Experimenting can be really fun, but this doesn’t mean you should completely change everything you own; you still want your unique personality to shine through. “I may not be looking preppy but you better believe that I have my monogram plastered all over my desk and my Lilly Pulitzer pens scattered all over the place.” Marie says. “You can’t let people forget what makes you unique.”

Are you ready to experiment with your look, collegiettes? Whether you’re looking to tone it down or spice it up, we have you covered!

We Have Your Roadmap to the Best Fall Semester Ever

Can you imagine your world without Google Maps? The application has completely revolutionized the way we explore unknown and familiar territories alike. So with a new semester just beginning, we can’t help but find ourselves wishing for our own version of Google Maps. We’re talking about one that would navigate us through the upcoming months and make reaching our destination just a little bit easier.

While that doesn’t exist just yet, we thought we’d assemble some of our favorite tips and tricks for starting the semester off right. These HC-approved essentials will ensure you stay on track—no matter the obstacle. Consider it a roadmap to your best fall semester yet.

Raise your hand if you’re ready for the best semester ever.

Rest Area Ahead.

When it comes to kicking the semester off on the right note, it’s important to set aside plenty of me-time. We love reserving Sunday nights for ~spa-like~ activities, which is why we’re so into the assortment of masks and foaming clays from Freeman Beauty. Their products use ingredients like avocado, oatmeal, cucumber, and apple cider vinegar, to name a few, which are great for leaving skin fresh and rejuvenated.

Scenic Route.

You deserve to roam your campus feeling and looking your best. That’s why we recommend adding a few new must-haves to your beauty bag to instantly elevate your back-to-school style.

To start, we adore Rimmel London for making the London look accessible to all of us outside the U.K. Their 24HR Supercurler Mascara, Only 1 Lipstick, and Colour Precise Eye Liner, will instantly freshen your back to school look.

And for that final step of your beauty routine, add a spritz of I ♥ Juicy Couture, the irresistible new fragrance from Juicy Couture. If you’re looking for a signature scent, search no further: this one makes a statement without overwhelming the senses thanks to notes of mandarin, jasmine, and patchouli.

Here’s you, thinking about what to get for lunch after Intro to Sociology. Your skin looks great, btw.

Buckle Up.

Much like our beauty routine, a collegiette’s wardrobe also needs a new semester update. And while it’s easy to head straight to the sweaters, pants, and shoes while back-to-school shopping, our undergarments and intimate apparel need a refresh, too. So opt for dependable brands like L’eggs and Maidenform to find pieces that are both functional and stylish. L’eggs hosiery come in skin tone hues and black, the latter of which is perfect for transitioning your outfits so you can look flawless as the weather turns cooler. Plus, Maidenform Love the Lift Push Up & In bras provide the support you need to style your ensembles with ease.

Caution Ahead.

When it comes to handling intimate health issues, we depend on brands that normalize the conversation and alleviate our stress. That’s where MONISTAT® comes in. Their It’s Time for TMI campaign educates young women about yeast infections and feminine health. Be sure to stock your medicine cabinet with their Vaginal Antifungal products; these cure yeast infections with no prescription necessary.

Best Route.

We’re all about products that are kind to our wallets and the environment. And when they make our lives easier? Even better! Enter The DivaCup: a reusable menstrual cup that ensures a much more comfortable period by providing up to 12 hours of leak-free protection. Rather than absorb menstrual flow, it collects it. Brilliant!

#goals

Adventure Awaits.

For safety and adventure, we look to the experts at Wearsafe for a discreet, easy-to-use personal safety system that can go wherever you do. The Wearsafe Tag and App instantly connect you to friends and family in an emergency. And since it can go with you anywhere, it’s the best way to feel confident on any adventure—no matter if it’s big or small. Talk about a necessity!

Attractions Ahead.

Finally, no collegiette is ready for the return to campus without a few good books and accessories. “Adulthood is a Myth” and “The Roommate Book” from Andrews McMeel Publishing provide ample entertainment–and inspiration–as a much-needed study break or reward once you’ve finished your most pressing assignments. And did we mention they have coloring books, too? Those are great for retaining focus and relaxing after (or during) a tough week.

Don’t forget to stay hydrated (and stylish) with the Forge Divide insulated travel mug from CamelBak, which comes in a number of bright colors. We also love the customizable koozies from Flying Colors Apparel, which are perfect for throwing in your bag for between class coffee runs.

Whatever road you’re on, we promise to help you get there.
Have a great semester!

The 15 Stages of Career Anxiety You Experience as a Junior

$

As a junior in college, you’re likely hovering between two stages—you're definitely not a newbie, but you're also far from ready for graduation. As Britney Spears so eloquently put it, you’re not a girl but not yet a woman. Stuck in the stage where you need to buckle down about your career and finish school strong—all while beginning to plan for the future—it's no wonder that stress can ensue! When you're thinking about your career as a junior, here's what you can expect. Just remember to stay strong—we've all been there... or will be there soon!

1. Your schedule just got a whole lot more intense

You realize your class schedule is getting much more specific. No more blow-off classes or easy As. Everything is directly training you for your career.

2. Friends are setting an (intimidating) example for you

Your older friends have graduated and are moving on to grad school or starting a real grown-up job.

3. Professors keep trying to connect you with future bosses

You're constantly urged to start reaching out to potential employers, and so are your classmates. Which means...

4. The competition heats up

Your portfolio, resume and work samples all of a sudden seem to pale in comparison to your classmates'.

 5. You delve into frequent denial

You sometimes live life trying to pretend you’re as carefree as the incoming freshmen are. It's only minimally successful.

6. Stress eating occurs... a lot of stress eating

Scope out companies and agencies that could employ me in the future? No thanks, I'll just eat this entire cake instead. On that note...

7. Procrastination is at its worst

You know you're officially on the downward slope toward graduation and getting a real job, but it's easier to stay in bed than face that fact.

8. Parental control kicks in

Your parents start to ask (read: interrogate) you about what your plans for the future are.

9. Friends are scooping up internships

You haven't applied to any internships yet, and it seems like your friends are already jetting off to all corners of the country for incredible opportunities. How?

10.  Regrets surface

You realize you probably should have taken a few more classes your freshman and sophomore years to lessen the load this year, which would mean you'd have more time for career planning or to take a semester off for an internship.

11. So does anxiety for the future

Where will you live? Will your job pay the bills? Will you have enough money to continue your stress eating habit?

12. Cover letters, resumes and qualifications, oh my!

You're puzzled as to why you were never specifically taught how to write a resume or cover letter.

13. Professional references escape you

Even though you've had countless professors who've had a great opinion of you, somehow they all fly out of your head when you're asked to provide references on a resume or application.

14. But you eventually pull yourself together, grab a coffee and decide to get your life on track

These freakouts are just temporary, and you know that once you get motivated you'll figure it all out.

15. Because you know you’re actually way more capable than you give yourself credit for

Junior year of college is often a turning point. You figure out what you really want to do with your life, and start to work directly toward a focused goal. Don't be afraid of these mini-breakdowns throughout the year. They're a necessary evil and they happen to the best of us. You'll work it out, and look back on these worries with laughter—we promise.
