How to Make Your Dorm Room Feel Like Home

This article has been syndicated to Her Campus from Sara Laughed, an InfluenceHer Collective member. Read the full post here.

As a college senior, I’ve had my fair share of dorm rooms by now; from an underground triple (yes, really!), to a little room in a big city, to a quiet single facing the woods. Even so, I get so excited about decorating my dorm room every year! So when Bed Bath & Beyond reached out to me about introducing you to their college collection, I was totally on board. Today, I’m showing you my dorm style and sharing a few of my favorite new dorm items for this year, featuring Bed Bath & Beyond.

Here’s the mood board I put together for my dorm style. I wanted it to feel vibrant and cozy, with a dash of world traveler (via the cork board map and Moroccan tiles) and reminders of home (from the photo collage). I stopped by Bed Bath and Beyond to pick up a couple of the items from my mood board to decorate my room!

Shopping at Bed Bath & Beyond was really a really fun and easy experience. They had a Student Life Checklist that included all the college living essentials, which made my trip a lot easier. Even better, they also had specific school info sheets available that listed what was and wasn’t allowed in your college’s dorms, what the school recommended for supplies, and even small details like the school’s bedding size. Because I’m a former RA, I knew my college’s requirements by heart, and I was really impressed that the Bed Bath & Beyond school info sheet had them all right!

So how do you make your dorm room actually feel like home?

1. Figure out what your style is

Putting together a mood board really helped me figure out which trends and styles caught my eye. You could make a dorm room Pinterest board for this purpose, pinning images of dorm rooms and decor you like. It’ll help you notice the trends and colors that appeal to you!

2. Invest in a few wall decorations that will liven up the space

I chose a fun photo string collage to bring some color to my wall, but you can find something for any style to serve the same purpose. A tapestry or wall hanging would work, or you could use a poster or an eclectic collection of photo frames.

3. Add touches from home

Photos, stuffed animals, a cozy blanket from your bedroom: these are all great ways to add a personal and homey touch to a new space. I have brought my childhood stuffed owl with me to college every single year. Don’t be afraid to bring in things from your old life to your new one; chances are, your new roommate will be doing the same!

9 Cocktails Every Adult Should Know How to Make

“I just can’t drink like I did in college anymore,” said every graduette ever.

It’s true. For many of us, a year or two of living in the real world has left us with lower alcohol tolerances, rusty shot-taking skills and zero desire to get off the couch on a week night. While we apologize to our besties for being “lame grandmas,” we’re actually just normal, maturing adults. So what if we can’t drink like we did in college? That’s actually a very good thing.

We’ve graduated from mysterious fraternity jungle juice and chasing vodka (aka nail polish remover) shots with whatever we can find (read: Gatorade, water, milk). We’re ready for grown up drinks, and we’re lucky to be putting those college hangovers in the past.

Here are a few classy cocktails to get you started:

1. Sangria: because wine and fruit are soul mates

Two Found Guilty in Sexual Assault Case Due to Snapchat Evidence

On Tuesday, two residents of Saugus, Mass. were found guilty of sexual assault, supported by Snapchat documentation.

The Boston Globe reports that the jury, made up of seven women and five men, deliberated for about a day before concluding that they found Rashad Deihim, 21, and Kailyn Bonia, 20, guilty. The pair are being charged with intent to rape, indecent assault and battery, and kidnapping.

The victim was attacked behind an elementary school in the woods in September of 2014. Now 18 years old, she doesn't remember much about the event. Prosecutors claim that when police found her that night, she was "literally within hours of dying" because of the alcohol and drugs in her body—When she was found, she had to be given two doees of Narcan, a drug used to counteract opiates, Carrie Kimball Monahan, director of communications at the Essex District Attorney's Office, told CNNMoney.

The victim may not have been found if not for the Snapchat videos being sent to her friend, 18-year-old Sydnee Enos. As Enos received the videos, she had the presence of mind to take screenshots—Proof of the victim being unwillingly forced into sexual acts, such as one video showing her naked in the woods with her hand out, saying "Stop," according to the Globe.

In her testimony, Enos shared that she asked Timothy Cyckowski, the one sending her the videos, where he was. Her parents then gave that information to police so that they could find the victim.

"She saved my daughter's life," the victim's mother told the Globe, referring to Enos.

Ari Ezra Waldman, an associate law professor at New York Law School, talked to CNNMoney about the disturbing big picture when it comes to people filming crimes for social media. "It is beyond baffling why someone would share something like this on Snapchat or any other social media platform. It suggests...that some people value the lives of women so little that they feel comfortable bragging about their violence against them."

When so many sexual assault cases are thrown out of court due to lack of evidence, it's heartening that one victim was able to get justice with the help of Snapchat.

Ted Cruz Refuses to Endorse Donald Trump After Being Booed During RNC Speech

On Wednesday night, Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) took the stage in front of the Republican National Convention to give a poorly-received speech.

Sen. Cruz only used Donald Trump’s name once in his speech ― to congratulate Trump on his Republican nomination ― and withheld his endorsement in his speech, urging voters to “not stay home in November” and to “stand and speak and vote your conscience”, CNN Politics reports. Sen. Cruz primarily focused on the importance of traditional conservative values in his speech.

According to Variety, after it became apparent that Trump would not receive an endorsement from Sen. Cruz, the delegation began to boo Sen. Cruz off the stage and chanted “Endorse Trump!”

Delegates were outraged, with a majority stating that Sen. Criz had “failed the nation," CNN reports. Richard Black, a delegate from Virginia, told CNN that he was “doubtful” that he would support Sen. Cruz again. He further stated that “each individual has a duty to the nation that transcends the duty to themselves [and] that’s where [Sen. Cruz] failed.”

Jonathan Barnett, a Republican national committeeman from Arkansas, told CNN that Sen. Cruz is “self-centered” and that he “ruin[ed] his political career.”

Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House, tried to do some damage control after Sen. Cruz’s speech, stating that the speech was meant to be positive. Gingrich, according to the Huffington Post, stated that “Ted Cruz said you can vote your conscience for anyone who will uphold the Constitution. This election, there is only one candidate who will uphold the Constitution. So to paraphrase Ted Cruz, if you want to protect the Constitution of the United States, the only possible candidate this fall is the Trump-Pence Republican ticket.”

On Thursday morning, Sen. Cruz defended his decision not to endorse Trump, stating he was not “in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father," Variety reports. Despite the fact that Sen. Cruz took the pledge to support the Republican nominee, he stated that the pledge was “abrogated” after Trump got personal.

But did this speech ultimately destroy any sort of political future for Sen. Cruz? If Sen. Cruz does run for president in 2020, will voters hold him accountable for not unifying the Republican Party during this election? Time will tell.

How to Keep Moving Forward Your Second Year Out of College

$

0

The first year out of college is a trial period—it is truly your first time in the real world. It is normal to move back home, be unemployed for a bit, and not know what you really want. During that first year, every part of your life changes, yet you’re free to make plenty of mistakes because no one will judge you—you’re learning. However, in your second year out of college, it’s assumed that you’ll have your act together (or at least be closer to it). Yet, it’s easy to hit a sophomore slump and feel stuck—how do you know if what you’re doing is right? You don’t need to stress out if you’re still unsure about most things. You can, however, reflect on your time out of college so far and evaluate your experiences, which will help you figure out your next steps. Here’s a guide to help you set goals in five areas of your life now that you're well into your second year in the real world.

1. Do you have the right job?

If you loved your first job out of college and could stay there for the rest of your life, you’d be pretty lucky. If you’re like most post-collegiettes, however, you probably won’t stay at the same company, or at least in the same position, for too long. During your first year out of college, you really get to experience the job market. You become used to the 9-to-5 (which can take months). When that first year is done, there are a few things you can do to start figuring out future plans for your second year out of college.

First, make a list of what you like and don’t like about your current job. Do you like the corporate environment and the feeling that you’re part of something larger? Do you really hate that you have to sit in a cubicle and stare at your computer all day? If your list consists of mostly negative things, it’s time to brainstorm new opportunities. What environment do you see yourself in if you could make the change? For example, would you rather work with real people than with a computer? Ask yourself these questions, and jot down your answers.

If you’re happy with where you are, congrats! While you may decide to stay at your current company, you should still be making goals for yourself so you can continue to grow. Do you want a promotion? Do a little extra work on a group assignment or take on a side project that would help your boss or the rest of your team—and start taking note of accomplishments you had a direct part in, so that you can bring them up when it comes time for an annual review. Do you want to participate more in meetings? Make it a goal to say three things in your meetings going forward, big or small. Do you feel like you don’t really know your co-workers well? Make more of an effort, whether that means setting up a coffee date with your manager or taking part in company activities, such as going to weekly happy hours or running in a work charity race.

If you’re unhappy with your current job, it’s time to start looking! The nice thing is that you do have a job, and can keep it until you get another offer, so don’t stress on how long it takes! Finding a job is hard work, and even harder when you’re juggling a full-time position already. Set aside a few hours a week to update your LinkedIn and resume, and browse job postings in your free time. If you’re considering going back to school, find resources before you make the big decision. You can talk to alumni at your school, or go to information sessions at schools in your city—the more information you gather, the better informed you will be.

Sarah, a second year post-collegiette in Chicago says, “I was unhappy at my job, but comfortable. I loved my boss and my team, but I knew I wasn’t following my true interests. After a year, I decided to make the change and switch jobs. It was difficult to have that talk with my boss, but I felt relieved once I followed my true passion.”

2. Do you like where you live?

When you move after your first year of college, you’ll have fun no matter where you are—it’s your first time truly on your own and you feel like the opportunities are endless. After a year, your feelings might start to change. Do you like living in a big city? Would you prefer to be in a smaller town? Do you live with your parents and want to move out?

If you want to move apartments, start looking online! Websites like Street Easy, Craigslist, and Apartments.com can help with your search.

Liz, a post-collegiette who just moved from NYC to San Francisco, says, “After college, I moved to NYC because I thought that’s where I wanted to be. All my friends from college were there and I got a great job. After a year, I realized that I wasn’t happy there—even though I had a good job. I wanted to move somewhere with a great city, but also space to hike and explore nature. I visited a friend in SF and fell in love—although it was tough to make the change, I’m glad I did. Sometimes you just have to take the risk, even though you won’t know how it will turn out.”

3. Are you happy in your relationships?

During your first year out of college, a lot changes, especially when it comes to your relationships. From moving away from friends and family to getting accustomed to the post-college dating scene, it’s hard to know where you fit in once you graduate. After a year in the real world, you realize that it’s hard to stay in touch with everyone, no matter how close you once were. It’s time to start thinking about what kinds of people you want to maintain a relationship with.

For your friendships—put reminders in your calendar once a month to contact that old friend who lives in California that you don’t get to talk to very often. It’s easy to forget things when life gets busy!

In terms of your romantic life—if you’re in a serious relationship, think about your future. Yes, it was fun to have an SO while you navigated your first year out of college, but how do you feel now? Can you see yourself being long-term with this person? If not, it might be time to move on, no matter how difficult that decision may be.

If you want to be single, more power to you! This is the time to take advantage of your freedom and explore your new surroundings outside of college. You don’t need to date—just have fun and get to know what you like and don’t like about people. Even if you don’t want to date, don’t stop meeting new people! You never know what kinds of relationships (romantic or not!) you’ll build.

And if you want to start dating, that’s great too! Now that you’ve been out of college a year, you probably know more about what kind of person you are and who you would be interested in dating. If you’re having trouble meeting potential partners, try joining a group activity outside of work, such as a kickball team or writing group. Doing what you love and not thinking about meeting the “right one” is the best way to meet the one. It might be fun to meet someone at a bar your first year out of college, but by the second year you might be a little tired of that hookup culture that’s so similar to the one you had in college—but there's nothing wrong with celebrating your singledom, either.

Emily, a second year post-collegiette in NYC, says, “I met my boyfriend at a softball game! I joined a team after feeling like I wasn’t meeting the types of guys I wanted to at bars, and I loved softball growing up. You just have to follow your interests—you never know who you might meet.”

4. Are you taking care of your health?

While partying like you’re still in college can be fun, it will get exhausting and catch up to you by your second year out. Sure, you should still be able to drink and go out and have a great time, but as a second year post-collegiette, you need to make sure you are treating yourself well. This means making smart eating choices and taking care of your health. Make sure you are getting enough of all the nutrients you need to stay strong. If you have moved to a new city, make sure you get a new doctor—yearly check-ups are important! As you get older, it becomes more difficult to stay on top of these things because you’re very busy, but if it takes putting a regular reminder in your phone, do it. In the real world, it’s also hard to stay active when you work a 9-to-5 (or even longer hours), but it’s extremely important to stay active—whether that means joining a gym, biking to work, or even forgoing the elevator whenever you have the choice. Depending on how much you like to exercise, you should be active at least 30 minutes a day (yes, taking the stairs counts).

Jenna, who lives in Boston and has been out of college two years, says, “During my first year out of college, it was difficult to make time to exercise regularly—I didn’t know my schedule and I was still getting used to my new schedule with work. This year, I made it a priority to work out 4 times a week. I get my friends together to go for runs (otherwise I won’t go!). I suggest doing the same—it will force you to stay active.”

5. Are you saving or spending?

During your first year out of college, you learn all about budgeting—like, how many Starbucks coffees you can get each week or late night pizza runs you can make without breaking the bank. You quickly learn (probably after a year) that you need to create an actual budget for yourself. If you need help with doing so, apps like LearnVest and Mint will take your salary and spending habits into account so you can create your own personalized budget. With categories such as health, entertainment and home, you can figure out how much you should truly be saving and spending, which is difficult to stick to if you're not keeping track of your expenses.

Ashley, a recently graduated student living in Charlotte, NC says, “I never knew what I was spending my money on until I got the app Mint—it helped me realize that I was spending over $100 a month on coffee! I set a coffee budget as soon as I noticed and now only spend half that amount—which would be impossible to do without the app alerting me about my budgets each week.”

Thoughts of the second year of your post-college life really don’t seem so bad once you’ve reflected on the first one. Now that you know what you want, and have goals to accomplish, you’re ready to tackle them. It’s the real world, take two. Good luck—you got this, post-collegiette!

'America's Next Top Model' Will Never Be the Same Again

When we first heard about America's Next Top Model return to television, we were overjoyed—because if you're anything like us, the show was absolutely vital to your upbringing. But ANTM as we know it just might never be. The catch to this reboot: Tyra Banks won't be hosting the show. Now, the new cast has been announced, and we are seriously missing Tyra—but actually pretty excited for what's to come.

Unfortunately, none of the original team—J. Alexander and the likes—will be returning. The new show will introduce Rita Ora as the host, accompanied by an all-fresh panel of judges, including model Ashley Graham, stylist Law Roach and Paper creative chief officer Drew Elliott. The upcoming season, which airs on VH1, will also take on a modern spin with a pop culture focus, with contestants competing in pop culture-oriented challenges each week.

"The approach I wanted to have as a host and judge to the girls is what my career stands for at this moment in time," Rita told USA Today, "which is being a businesswoman and being able to do multiple things at the same time, whether it's music or shooting [magazine covers] and being in movies and designing clothes."

While Tyra Banks is certainly irreplaceable, we’re looking forward to what this new reboot will have in store. On the bright side, she will be making her own appearances throughout the season, so we don’t have to say goodbye to her just yet. It hasn’t been officially announced when the show will premiere, but Ora has teased that it is still in production on social media.

When you’re constantly being told what to wear, how much makeup to apply and what mold you should fit, the rules of beauty can be complicated. Even if the magazines aren’t telling you how good looking you are, there are so many women who embrace their stretch marks, stomach rolls, acne scars and birthmarks that let you know you can be your own kind of beauty. Simply put: ‘imperfections’ are a thing of the past.

“I remember when I started school my mom told me that my birthmarks were angel kisses—and that really stuck with me,” Ciera told Mirror.

Ciera also turns to Instagram to motivate herself and others to love themselves!

Stretch marks can happen for a number of different reasons: losing and gaining weight, puberty, childbirth and muscle gain and loss.

In reality, no matter what size you are, you’re probably going to earn a stretch mark or two in your life. With every mark, incredibly, there is a story. This is true for Conner Rensch who graced People’s “Half Their Size” issue after she lost 150 pounds. Besides the tabloids, Conner has been posting inspiring pictures on her Instagram to document her weight loss and inspire others to do the same.

4. Chantelle Winnie

Ever since she was discovered by a Toronto journalist and asked by Tyra Banks personally to be on “America’s Next Top Model,” Chantelle Winnie has been taking the fashion world by storm. Not only does her bone structure and model bod make her look like she was born for the spotlight, Winnie’s ‘no fear’ confidence level when it comes to her vitiligo has broken many beauty barriers. It hasn’t stopped her from being in the front of the camera, appearing in Vogue Australia or slaying every photo shoot, showing that nothing should hold you back from posing for pics.

5.  Shalom Blac

When Shalom Blac was a young girl in Nigeria, she was burned by frying oil in her family’s store, and was left with scars on her face and upper body. As she got older, she turned to makeup to cover up her scars. Rather than using the makeup to hide, she used it to feel more confident in herself.

Shalom told Glamour, “There are no rules to makeup. And as a burn survivor, it gives me a chance to share my passion with others that may be going through similar things—or better yet, inspire someone to love who they see in the mirror."

Take a note from Shalom’s book and use makeup to boost your self-esteem, highlight your natural beauty and express who you are!

6. Andreja Pejic

If you want some Instagram, fashion and life inspiration, Andreja is your girl. Not only is this supermodel constantly decked out in the coolest clothes, she's pals with Caitlyn Jenner and uses her stardom to fight for the transgender community. Click the follow button for this chick—she's definitely someone to look up to.

7.  Melanie Gaydos

Melanie is only 27 years old and she's already the talk of the fashion crowd because of her unique looks. She was born with a condition called ectodermal dsyplasia, which hinders the growth of pores, small bones, teeth and cartilage. Instead of adhereing to everyone else's beauty standards, Gaydos refuses to wear a fake set of teeth or a wig. She documents her killer photo sessions on Instagram, so take a look (oh, and swoon over her two cute kittens).

With so many different definitions of beauty throughout the world, in the magazines and on social media, it can be easy to question your own beauty. But no matter what your skin looks like, how your body is shaped or what marks you may have, it all tells a story. Give yourself more credit when you look in the mirror and know that no one else looks exactly like you.

5 Bad Academic Habits You Had Last Year (& How To Ditch Them!)

$

Last year, you snoozed your alarm one too many times for that 8 a.m. Calc class, you were on Facebook during your entire lecture instead of taking notes and the hardest literature you read was a Chinese takeout menu. Every collegiette has a couple of academic habits she wants to change for the upcoming year. Luckily, Her Campus is here to show you how to fix even your most set-in-stone practices!

1. You procrastinated… all the time.

We’ve all had that one assignment we just couldn’t get done until the last second, whether it was due to time constraints or just a general feeling of apathy towards the material. Some people, however, have more trouble than others when it comes to completing tasks in a timely manner. If you’re one of those people, don’t stress! There are several steps you can take to become an on-task academic in no time.

Allison Raven, a recent graduate of Rice University, advises collegiettes to buy a special notebook or planner and organize like your life depends on it! “I’m really big on writing things down,” she says. “I use a organizer to write down everything and make a plan of prioritization so that I can figure out what is actually essential versus what isn’t as important to finish first.” Figure out exactly when your assignments are due and what dates crucial events are happening, and schedule them in your planner immediately. As soon as you’re handed your syllabi from professors during your first week of classes, put in all of your assignment, project and exam dates to avoid confusion (and massive amounts of stress!) later on.

Caroline Creasman, a recent graduate at the University of Dallas, also explains the importance of creating your own deadlines so that they fit your schedule. “I like to make my own plan,” she says. “I usually just have way too many things going on and get overwhelmed. But if I sit down and set my own deadlines so that I’m able to manage my schedule, that helps a lot!”

If you have a paper and a presentation due on Friday, it can be stressful trying to do them simultaneously. Instead, create your own deadline and say that you want to get your paper done by Monday so you can focus on your presentation on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. By creating your own system, you will able to juggle way more tasks at once.

Jillian Feinstein, a senior at the College of William & Mary, explains how crucial it is to do your assignments in increments. “It’s so stressful to think, ‘I’m going to sit here for four hours and write this paper,’” she says. “I would totally rather sit on Facebook than do that! But if you break the paper down by the number of pages or paragraphs you want to get done each day, it’s a lot more manageable.”

2. You didn’t get enough sleep.

It’s easy to say, “Just sleep more if you’re tired!” But any collegiette who has struggled with long, sleepless nights knows that just isn’t true. It’s hard to find time to rest with so much going on!

Luckily, there are a couple different ways to stay sane and still get your beauty rest in. First, form a nightly routine. Sure, you could stay glued to your computer screen updating your Pinterest and checking Her Campus instead of going to bed, but it’s time to tear your eyes away!

“I need a very regimented sleep schedule where I’m resting between midnight and 8 a.m. to function,” Allison says. “I know I have to get stuff done to be able to sleep, so I stick to my routine and make sure my work is completed before I go to sleep, so I’m not up late stressing out.”

Decide on an order of events for before you go to bed and stay with it. Maybe brush your teeth and wash your face, drink a warm mug of tea and then read a book for 30 minutes. The trick is to go to bed without your mind racing at a million miles per hour so that you get more restful sleep. Find a routine that’s relaxing for you.

Still can’t get into a set sleeping routine and cycle? Try napping! Research shows that even 15 to 20 minutes of napping can really help you recharge if you’re having an especially stressful or long day.

3. You wasted your weekend time.

Work hard, play hard seems to be the motto of college students everywhere. But what happens if you play a little too hard and waste your weekend away? Sure, there should be some time to party during the weekend, but the weekend is also a great time to work on papers, finish assignments and attend extracurricular meetings.

One easy way to make sure your weekend time isn’t wasted is to set aside specific time every Saturday or Sunday to do work or accomplish whatever other goals you have, no matter what’s going on. Even if it’s only for two hours, that’s better than no hours spent doing work.

Allison uses this tactic to get the most out of her weekend time. “Every single Sunday morning, I get up early (around 9 a.m.) and go to a coffee shop off campus and spend three or four hours just working,” she explains. “It’s really good for me to get away from campus to clear my head and really focus. It also helps me start my Sunday in work mode instead of lay-in-bed mode.”

Is a coffee shop too noisy for you? Jillian suggests taking advantage of your school’s library for intense study sessions. “I'm a big fan of library lock-ins when I have a lot to get done,” she says. College libraries tend to have all sorts of nooks and crannies, so if the main floor is too distracting, find a nice desk, table or carrel on a different floor or spot of the library. And besides, what gets you more into studious mode than the smell of old books?

However, Allison also believes in the importance of balance when scheduling your weekend time; make sure you have a little fun, too. “In exchange for my Sunday morning study sessions, I almost never do work on Saturdays!” she says.

4. You didn’t pay attention in class.

So you dragged yourself out of bed after snoozing your alarm four times, trudged across campus with your eyes half-closed, plopped yourself down in a seat next to that weird kid who hasn’t showered in several weeks and pulled out your laptop. Should you open a Word document to take notes, or Facebook? Facebook seems to win every time. Obviously, going to class is fantastic; it’s already an accomplishment over sleeping in. But what you do in class is just as important as going!

If you know technology distracts you easily, Jillian suggests taking notes the old-fashioned way (pen and paper, anyone?) and sitting far away from your friends. But if you absolutely need your laptop for the class, Claire O’Connell, a junior at Wesleyan University, suggests turning off your Wi-Fi and sitting in the front of the room. “There's nothing like a professor's eye contact to make you sit up and pay attention!” she says.

Lucy Cruz, a senior at the University of Florida, faced the problem of being unfocused when she took a psychology class last semester. “It was just such an easy class that I felt like I never had to pay attention. I would just sit on Facebook and Twitter the entire time,” she says. “However, the class got harder, and I started having to actually listen to what was going on, but I found it difficult because of the habits I’d grown accustomed to. It was like my body was craving Facebook instead of psychology!”

To keep herself on task, Lucy downloaded the SelfControl app on her computer, which blocks selected websites for an allotted amount of time. “I know a lot of people use it to get homework done, but blocking myself from social media sites during class definitely helped me focus a lot more than me just saying to myself, ‘Pay attention!’ would have,” she says. SelfControl is only available for Macs, but you can try Freedom, a similar app, if you have a PC!

5. You just didn’t go to class.

Motivating yourself to go to class is half the battle. Sure, you know you’re supposed to attend lectures, write papers and learn, but what if the class you’re taking is boring or easy or at 8 a.m. (who wants to be in a calc class at 8 a.m. in the first place)?

In addition to her struggles once she was in class, Lucy also faced trouble just going to her psych class at all. Why go to an easy morning class when she could just sleep in? After sleeping through several lectures, Lucy decided she had to make a change.

“One of the easiest steps to take when trying to make yourself go to a class is reminding yourself why you’re taking that class in the first place,” she says. “Even if it’s just for a graduation requirement, at least you’re actively thinking about why you’re in school.” It’s easy to get lost in the midst of classes and extracurriculars and part-time jobs, but think to yourself: what does your education mean to you?

Lucy also recommends trying to find incentives to go to class. “These can be meaningful incentives, like getting on the Dean’s List at the end of the semester,” she says. “Or just goofy fun incentives, like ‘I will reward myself with this Jolly Rancher if I go to this class,’ work too. Start small and work your way up!”

Of course, some collegiettes need something a little bit louder to keep them from hitting the snooze button. Try a more creative wake up call!

You could buy a Clocky ($39), an alarm clock on wheels that hops off of your nightstand and runs around your room beeping until you get out of bed to turn it off. Or, if you’re looking to get into shape this school year, try the Amico Digital Display 30 Times Lift Plastic Dumbbell Electronic Alarm Clock ($20.85). This little dumbbell-shaped clock needs to be pumped 30 times before the alarm turns off. Think of it as getting up while getting great arms at the same time!

The school year is up to you!

Your bad academic habits don’t have to be set in stone! Think about what you want to change, and set out to actively change it. There are always ways to improve your organization and time management, so put some thought into how you can create the best academic experience for you!

How to Finally End Your On-Again/Off-Again Relationship

$

Breaking up is hard to do. It’s even harder to do when you and your SO have been involved with one another for quite some time. Every couple has its fair share of hard times but, at some point, we all have to come to terms with when it’s actually time for things to end. You may feel like you and your beau are stuck at a dead end, but we’re here to clue you in on when and how you should finally kiss your on-again, off-again relationship goodbye.

1. Realize when it’s over

A lot of people have a misconception that, despite how toxic their relationships are, they shouldn’t end things with their SOs just because of how long they’ve been together. But regardless of how much time you’ve spent with a person, there has to be a point at which you determine that enough is enough. “You know it’s time to end a back and forth relationship when nothing changes each time you go back,” says Dr. Carole Lieberman, media psychiatrist and author of Bad Girls: Why Men Love Them & How Good Girls Can Learn Their Secrets. “For example, if the guy promises he’ll never cheat again, but then he does, it’s time to call it quits,” she says. “Most guys need to sow their wild oats. So, part of him may want to be in a relationship with you, but he can’t resist temptation. Don’t keep going back to him, only to be hurt each time he cheats.” Just because you’ve spent a few years with someone doesn’t always mean that it’s in your best interest to stay in a relationship that’s no good for you. Just know that the length of your relationship isn’t always the most important thing. There are only so many times that you can allow yourself to be hurt or let down. So, even if your SO makes a million promises that he'll do better, you have to know when not to take the bait. Know when to wash your hands of the situation. He may be a little resistant to the breakup, but your mental and emotional well-being is more important than anything and staying in a toxic relationship won't help that.

2. Pick a decent way to end it

We’re living in a digital age and the geniuses of the world are creating so many “convenient” (but also kind of rude) ways for people to call it quits. Ending relationships is hard but the key to making sure things don’t get even messier with your future ex is to make sure that you choose a respectful way to break things off. “The proper way to end the relationship is to go on a quiet date, such as a picnic or walk in the park,” says Dr. Lieberman. “Sit down and tell him honestly that, although you really want to be with him, he’s apparently not ready yet to be in a committed relationship because of x, y or z.” To note, even if there's a part of you that doesn't actually want to be with him or her anymore, remember to be completely honest about your feelings and not sugar coat what you're doing. We’re not saying you have to be best friends when it’s all over, (because that can be a terrible idea) but breaking up in person is a simple way to avoid making your relationship worse than it already is.

3. Take some time to cope

By coping, we mean stocking up on Ben and Jerry’s and making sure that Taylor Swift album you bought is being put to good use. “Once it’s over, you can indulge yourself with tears, romantic comedies and rocky road ice cream until you’re ready to face the world,” Dr. Lieberman says. You can spend a few days seeking comfort from your friends and family; but, if that's not enough, you can also visit your school's clinic to see a counselor. A lot of colleges and universities have staff that specialize in helping students through breakups, so don't be hesitant to seek professional help. The aftermath of a breakup can be a difficult time for anyone so, ultimately, how you choose to cope is up to you. But we do advise you to keep Drake off of your playlist.

No one ever said breaking up is easy, but sometimes it’s for the best. Understand that, regardless of how long you and your SO have been involved, letting go might be the best thing you both can do when you feel like you’ve hit a brick wall.

12 Reasons Why Being Single When You Start College is the Best

So, you’re single. Maybe you’ve just broken up with your high school boyfriend or you’ve been unattached for a while now. Either way, there’s nothing wrong with riding solo. On the contrary, being single your freshman year is the best thing that’s ever happened to you. Don’t believe us? Here are some reasons that will change your mind:

1. You’re in good company.

Despite what you may think, “single” is not synonymous with “lonely.” Tons of young women enter college single, and what better way to bond with these lovely ladies (and make new friends) than by telling funny stories about your respective exes? You can even make a game of it!

2. You can lust after your hot RA/Orientation Leader/upperclassman guy crush, guilt-free.

Connie Chan, a senior at Carnegie Mellon, entered college single after breaking up with her high school sweetheart. “Even though I missed my ex at times, it was refreshing to meet so many new guys and flirt without feeling guilty,” she says. “Looking back, I'm glad I was able to fully experience my first weeks of college without anything holding me back.”

Although you may not want to jump into dating a senior immediately when you start your freshman year, there’s nothing wrong with a little harmless flirtation with one of the older guys helping out at orientation activities. Checking out cute freshmen was probably the main reason he volunteered for the job in the first place...

3. You can bond with your floormates during marathons of Girl Code, interruption-free.

The worst part about watching a bunch of female comedians discuss their various boy struggles is having to take the time to answer every interrupting text from the very cause of your own boy problems. When you’re with your girl friends, you should be with them—not concentrating on some boy miles away who can’t relate to the delicate art of eyebrow waxing. That’s girl code.

4. You can throw yourself into clubs, intramural sports and Greek life.

Without a guy to take up all your time and distract you, you can really concentrate on the most fun aspects of college life. Adam LoDolce, a dating coach who offers free video dating advice at SexyConfidence.com, advocates for this, saying, “Freshman year is the time to be insanely social and meet as many new people as possible. If you have a boyfriend/girlfriend then he/she will likely hold you back.” Besides exploring your personal interests, getting involved on campus is one of the quickest ways to make new friends... and meet new guys.

5. The guys in college are way hotter (and less awkward) than they were in high school.

Chances are that you were there to witness your high school boyfriend’s awkward stage, but college is a blank slate. You may think your last boyfriend was the cream of the crop, but that’s only because you’ve been living on a small farm. (That’s just a metaphor, gals.)

6. You can actually focus on your studies.

As much as we love partying, higher education is what you enrolled in college for. When you’re not interrupting studying with constant texts and not blowing off reading for hour-long Skype sessions, you will have a much easier time getting your work done. As lame as it sounds, a big part of college is the actual learning part. You can get work done a lot faster and better when you’re not constantly distracted by a blinking phone screen.

7. You can party, guilt-free!

Seriously, if you’re not going to flirt with one of the cute brothers at a frat party, there’s no point risking your precious outfit and shoes to possible beer spills. Nicole Echeverria, a junior at the University of Michigan, says that one of the biggest perks of being single your freshman year is that “you can meet, hang out with and flirt with any guy and not feel the least bit guilty.” Not only that, but it’s much easier to get into a frat party with a group of single girls instead of your boyfriend hanging on your arm.

8. Your guy pool is the largest it will be for the next four years.

When you’re a freshman, every guy is fair game. Since you probably don’t know many people yet, any guy could be the one, or, at least, the one right now. Freshman year is really the only time you get a free pass to ride the hot mess express, so you might as well make the most of it. LoDolce adds, “Although you may not want to ‘sleep around,’ a few hook-ups may let you have a little fun while you focus on your school work.” You’ll be a disillusioned SWUG before you know it, so why not play the field when the field is at its largest?

9. You can take over your common room to learn the “Single Ladies” dance.

Move the chairs, hook up your computer to the giant TV screen and press play. There’s no doubt this classic Beyonce tune will become the personal anthem that powers you through freshman year—especially after you and two of your friends learn the dance. Who cares if he didn’t put a ring on it? Sasha Fierce doesn’t.

10. You get to avoid the cliche that is “The Turkey Dump” and the resulting fallout.

You’ve probably heard of “The Turkey Dump,” aka when high school couples break up during Thanksgiving break. If you start out college single, you get to avoid that whole awkward and emotional experience. “It is very likely your high school relationship will end anyway, so break it off before you miss your entire freshman year experience,” says LoDolce.

11. You’ll have better stories.

When you’re 85 years old and telling stories about your good ole college days to your grandkids, they probably won’t want to hear about your hour-long Skype sessions with what’s-his-name. Avalon Jones, a recent graduate of George Mason University, says, “My only regret in life is starting my freshman year in a relationship with my now ex-boyfriend still back at home. I completely missed out on my entire fall semester. I didn't go to parties or meet very many friends. Finally, during winter break, I chose to end the relationship and had an amazing spring semester in return.” Without a boyfriend holding you back, you’re free to have lots of wild fun in college!

12. You can learn more about yourself.

College is all about discovering who you are, and sometimes the only way you can do that is through being alone. “I met my boyfriend at the beginning of freshman year, but we didn't get together until the end of sophomore year,” says Katherine Mirani, a senior at Northwestern University. “It took so long because we both had a lot of growing and changing to do before we were ready to be in a relationship.”

For most young women, college is the first time you get to be fully independent, but you can’t really do that if your high school self still lives in a relationship. While being somebody’s girlfriend is great, being yourself is better.

Clearly, your single status isn’t a death sentence—it’s a new lease on life! When it comes to making new friends, embracing new opportunities and meeting new guys, you’ll be ready to do it all with your single girl swagger.

A Complete Guide to Every Dress Code You Need to Know

$

Better to be overdressed than underdressed as the saying goes, right? Maybe, but sometimes we’d like to know that we’re dressed exactly right for the occasion. That’s why we’ve put together a comprehensive style guide to help you turn heads no matter where you go this summer.

Casual Chic

Casual chic (or dressy casual) is all the rage right now, especially in the warmer months. This is the kind of outfit you’d wear to an outdoor barbecue with friends, at Sunday brunch or on a spontaneous shopping trip.

Fashion blogger Kristen Conahan tells us, “When dressing for weekend errands, I think comfortable but still put-together. A striped body-con dress is great for that and it’s flattering in any size. Because of its revealing nature, I always feel more comfortable with a jacket on top to add a little complexity.” You can complete this look with your favorite pair of flats. Conahan chose espadrilles because, she says, “they go with everything and will last for years.”

If dresses aren’t your thing (and we totally get that, too), Conahan has the perfect alternative for you—a pant look that you can dress up or down! “A [light] sweater and pair of jeans look great for the day time with sneakers, but if you want to make it a tad dressier, simply add a heel,” she says. “It's amazing how a stiletto will change a look instantly!”

Business Casual

Typically, business casual is slightly less formal than traditional office or professional wear. Brandi Britton, district president of Office Team (a leading administrative staffing company), explains, “While suits aren’t normally required, that doesn’t mean jeans and sneakers will do. Dress pants, khakis or a skirt along with a collared shirt or dressy top are appropriate.”

Supermodel Kate Moss makes a statement in this trendy business casual outfit with a pair of pink dress pants, folded to just above the ankles. She completes the effortless yet chic look with a plain black collared shirt, tucked loosely into her pants. For accessories, Moss adds a wide belt, a large black clutch and, every dressy girl’s staple, a pair of black pumps. Perfect!

Smart Casual

Smart casual is a lot like business casual, but more modern and arguably more personalized. If you’re working for a tech start-up in Silicon Valley or taking on your first editorial job in the Big Apple, this is probably ideal for you.

Britton explains, “A smart casual dress code can be confusing for many. Along with some of the relaxed flexibility of casual, you need to dress it up a bit and pull your outfit together to look ‘smart.’ You may be able to mix and match elements from other dress codes and add certain accessories to show your personality and style.”

For criminal defense attorney Heather Trick, smart casual means, “dark trousers, khaki pants or fun patterned skirts with tailored shirts and a blazer.” Take this adorable Lauren Conrad look for example:

Trick points out that in the legal world (and in other more formal or conservative workplaces), smart casual doesn’t really exist. She’s more likely to stick to business casual or business formal instead.

Business Formal

Business formal, also known as business professional, is most applicable for a more traditional office; think jobs in finance or legislative affairs. Usually, this dress code calls for a professional suit and conservative footwear, which, for the most part, means closed-toe shoes.

Related: 5 All-Black Power Outfits for Your Summer Internship

For added clarification, Britton explains that business formal “may be compared to what you’d wear to a job interview.”

Try a slim-fitting pantsuit like this one Emma Watson rocked in New York. Suits should be dark (black, charcoal or navy) and inner shirts should be a neutral or pastel color; bold patterns may be acceptable depending on the office culture. For consistency, keep your jewelry and other accessories simple but classy.

Lucky for us, we’ve got a real-life princess to turn to for tons of business formal inspo. Kate Middleton gives us major outfit envy in this classic number, proving that you can also accomplish a sleek, business formal outfit with a structured dress as an alternative to a suit.

Cocktail Attire

Cocktail attire is one of those in-between dress codes, like smart casual. Generally, it falls somewhere between casual and formal on the fashion spectrum but tends to be on the dressier side. For women, cocktail attire traditionally has meant the obvious—a cocktail dress. This is a flirty dress with a hemline just above the knee or slightly higher.

But, if you’re looking to stand out, Conahan says, “You'll need to find something to wear other than an LBD.” Try a flattering silk blouse paired with dressy pants or a cute pencil skirt, or feel free to opt for a classy two-piece coordinate set. Complete the look with your favorite pair of heels, or boots if it’s a cooler night out.

Conahan says, “I'm so into this look because you don't have to put much thought into getting dressed. Don it with a jacket over your shoulders, a heeled bootie or sandal and a simple clutch—you’re out the door in no time.”

If you’ve been to any networking events (hosted by professional fraternities, alumni associations or sometimes even social media groups), you’ll notice that they’re usually in the form of a cocktail party or cocktail reception. That’s because this is an ideal setting for social and professional networking—it’s not too formal and not too casual, and usually the idea of after-work drinks and appetizers is pretty enticing.

Keep in mind that if you’re heading to one of these immediately after work, your office attire will usually suffice, provided your office environment isn’t overly relaxed.

Black Tie or Formal

These two dress codes are a little confusing for women simply because they can mean a lot of different things, whereas the male alternatives would be pretty clear-cut (tuxedo or dark suit and tie). As a general rule, black tie means that you should wear a gown or long formal dress, like Blake Lively’s stunning wine-colored dress from the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

Sometimes, dressy separates or a formal cocktail dress may work too.

It’s best to tailor your outfit to suit both the host and location. For example, a Cinderella-esque wedding may call for a glamorous ball gown whereas a formal work dinner may call for an elegant evening dress; long enough that it covers your knees but not necessarily floor-length.

Dressing appropriately and fashionably for any occasion can be complicated—there are so many rules!

Of course, the rules we’ve gathered here aren’t set in stone. There are bound to be countless variations of these depending on the occasion, location, job industry, office culture and even climate that you’re dressing for! Trick notes about her professional attire, for example, “I am a lawyer, so the dress code is much more conservative than what I see for other professions, but I also live in Florida where it’s hot and where people take some artistic license with styling, so it really can be a spectrum.”

It’s also important to remember that, regardless of where you’re going and what you’re wearing, you’re not going to be comfortable if you’re not being yourself. Confidence is your best accessory. Be true to yourself and don’t be afraid to personalize any of these outfit suggestions!

Here's How EIC of Essence Overcame Getting Rejected For The Job—Twice

Vanessa K. De Luca, Editor-in-Chief of Essence magazine, is no stranger to hard work. In fact, before becoming EIC, she applied for the job twice and was actually turned down BOTH times. For many people, failing twice would mean letting thata dream go, but not for De Luca. Speaking at Her Conference 2016, De Luca shares what obstacles she faced when trying to accomplish her goals and how she overcame them. Here is what she did:

1. Know what you stand for—and what you don’t.

For De Luca, hard work ran in her family. When she was a kid her father worked the line at a Ford factory and her mom worked for a phone company. But eventually, her dad left his job in order to run his own business. He never took shortcuts when trying to accomplish his goals and that was something De Luca held with her. She says that when you take shortcuts, you aren't building a strong foundation. And knowing that, you stay true to what you stand for.

2. Don’t rest on your laurels.

According to De Luca, you should never just be comfortable. There is always a way to do more and be constantly evolving. Whether it's your thinking or your approach to a situation, there is always a way you can think outside of the box.

3. Believe in the power of failure.

For De Luca, this is one of the most important keys that she learned when climbing the ladder. She applied twice for the job of EIC and was turned down twice before she finally got into the role. She could have given up but she didn't. She says, “It’s hard when people tell you no” and tell you you aren't ready. You feel rejected and hurt and it's hard to come back from that. But instead of letting it tear you down, De Luca says it's crucial to always find the positive in a situation. One way you can learn from a failure is by asking questions like what you could have done better and how you can improve for next time. You should never be afraid to ask those hard questions.

4. Trust your inner compass, even when the naysayers do not.

When you go the gym or a spin class, you probably have heard your instructor say "use your core!" Well, it's the same for life, De Luca says. Your core is the part that sustains you and keeps everything else working. This is the same way that your inner compass works. Once you know what you believe in and learn to trust your gut, you are trained to follow it for life, even if people try to tell you otherwise. For De Luca, she had to trust her inner compass greatly in February 2015 when she made a choice to do an exclusive Black Lives Matter edition of the magazine. People told her that it wouldn't work but she took that risk, because it was something she felt strongly about. She couldn't just stand by idly, she felt as though she had a responsibility to take a stand and that she did. The result? It's one of the most critically acclaimed issues the magazine has put out.

5. Take the risk that takes you somewhere new.

Sure, De Luca faced some resistance when creating a BLM cover for Essence. But, she says, "It's worth it." Being able to take a risk and make a difference is incredibly fulfilling. She had the opportunity to shift the future and that's exactly what she did.

6. Look back—but only to see how far you’ve come.

An important part of growing up is making mistakes. But instead of looking at your mistakes as regrets, you can learn from them. De Luca stresses the importance of learning from what you did wrong and doing better next time.

7. Don’t be afraid to do the unexpected.

In our society, many people have an idea of who they are. But if you want to grow and be successful, it is important to think outside of the box and do the unexpected. "Take yourself out of the box that someone is putting you in!" and you will go so far.

8. Remain humble, but let ’em know.

As Beyoncé knows, it is absolutely amazing when you know that you "slay." Like Queen B, it is important to own your successes and things that you do well. But on the other side of that, you should always give credit more than you take credit. But when you do well, don’t shy away from owning it.

9. Never stop learning, because it gives you courage.

When De Luca grew up, her mother and grandmother drilled into her head the importance of education. "Education is everything" and you could not get where you want to be without an education, she says. When you have a good education, it gives you courage because you "know what you know" and as long as that's the case, you can do anything.

10. A winner never quits—a quitter never wins

Throughout everything, it is so important to never give up on your goals. Even if you fail many times, just as De Luca did, you cannot give up. Because once you accomplish what you set your mind to, the feeling is going to be unlike anything you've ever experienced before.

12 Ways to Make the Most Out of Time with High School Friends

The end of high school brings on an incredible amount of change. Everyone is moving on to college, jobs and countless other prospects. You might not know when you’ll see your old group of high school friends again, so make the most of the time you have. Here are some ways for you and your friends to make the summer before college a summer to remember.

1. Take pictures

You’ll want something to remember each other by (between visits of course), not to mention something to hang on your dorm fridge for a daily pick-me-up.  Take lots of photos together. You can never have too many. Print them out for maximum nostalgia value. You can even do cool things with them, like make them into stickers and magnets.

2. Hit up amusement parks

Pick a day to roll over to the closest amusement park and enjoy some rides together. Grab a corndog, hang on the carousel and fly down some rollercoasters. This is great to do with one pal or a large group of friends; just make sure you have an even number so everyone has a riding buddy!

3. Go boating

What says “summer” more than spending a day out on the boat? Most campgrounds let you rent a boat to take out on the lake, and possibly even a tube to pull along behind you. Soak up the sun, get a tan and bask in the summer glory before the season ends.

4. Shop for your dorm rooms together

Even if you’re not going to the same school, shopping for your dorm room supplies can be a blast when accompanied by a friend. You’ll feel like you’re involved in each other’s college lives somehow, even though you’ll be separated. Head to the mall, find your perfect bedding and give opinions on each other’s desired color schemes.

5. Exchange going-away gifts

Get your best friends something for their dorm room or their house. They’ll think of you whenever they see it, and it might remind them to shoot you a text or video chat. Anything from a monogrammed pillow, a framed photo of the two of you, or a new sweatshirt with their school's emblem on it will do! If you’re not in a place to splurge on a pillow or a print for them, DIY gifts would be even more personal and meaningful.

6. Go camping

Camping is one of the ultimate best friend pastimes. Pack up a few cars, find a campground nearby and make sure somebody brings the s’more supplies. Lay under the stars with your best friends, tell stories over the fire and appreciate what you all have before you go your separate ways.

7. Have a sleepover to end all sleepovers

Sleepovers are a typical staple of any friendship, but for your last big shindig, have a sleepover to end all sleepovers. Invite all your friends, make an obscene amount of popcorn and find your favorite movies on Netflix. Stay up all night recounting high school stories and making plans for the future. Some of the most honest and genuine moments of friendship come in the wee hours of the morning as you struggle to stay awake.

8. Have dinner at your favorite place

You know that place you frequented after eighth period? The go-to destination whenever one of you was hungry late at night? Stop back one last time before departing ways, eat your usual meal, and let it sink in how the little things in life, like this one, are the ones that make it all worthwhile.

9. Craft décor for your dorm

Pinterest holds a plethora of crafting ideas for your dorm room — from paintings of your school logo to wine bottle twinkle lamps. This is a perfect way to bond before heading to each of your respective schools. Go shopping at your local craft store, stock up on snacks and have a good ole fashioned craft night.

10.  Say goodbye to each other’s families

When you’re best friends with each other, you often become just as close with their parents or siblings. Make sure you say your goodbyes to these folks as well before you head to school. A nice gesture, like baking some cookies or taking over a casserole, will leave a good impression on them and leave them remembering you fondly while waiting for you to come back for a visit.

11. Take a road trip

Depending on your budget, you might be able to road trip to a beach or just to a nearby city. Wherever the destination, the trip there is the real adventure. Stock up on food and make a playlist for the car. Have everybody pitch in for gas and the world is your oyster.

12. Make plans for future visits

Perhaps the most important thing you can do with your best friend before summer ends is to make plans. Make plans to come visit each other during the school year, make plans for what you want to do over Christmas break and even just make plans to have a weekly Skype date with each other amidst the madness of your freshman year. Your old friends can keep you grounded if you put the right amount of effort into it. Don’t let them fall by the wayside.

How Literally Falling on Her Face Defined Nastia Liukin’s Life

From guest starring on Gossip Girl to winning an all-around gold medal at the Olympics in 2008, there really isn't anything that Nastia Liukin can't do. But the Olympic gymnast definitely didn't get to where she is now by just coasting through life. Instead, it took hard work, dedication and literally falling on her face. Yup, even Nastia Liukin falls. At Her Conference 2016, Liukin revealed that out of all the moments in her life—including winning gold in London!—it was a single moment at the Olympic Trials in 2012 that changed her life.

Now, I bet you are wondering how an Olympic gymnast falls and stays positive about it. Well, Liukin learned from the best; her parents. Growing up in Russia, Liukin was surrounded by gymnastics at a very young age. Both her parents were Olympic gold medalists and she wanted to win a gold of her own. From the bars to the beam, the gym was her happy place and no one was going to take that away from her. As she got older, she only got better, and people started to really take her seriously. So seriously, that when it was time for the Olympic trials in 2008, she was THE “It” girl.

But then she got injured. She had ankle surgery and during the trials that year, she fell a total of six times. But it didn’t stop her. “I wanted to know that I did absolutely everything possible,” she said, to make it to the Olympics. So even with an injury, she kept pushing forward. With a little help from the book The Secret, Liukin went on to make the Olympic team and, as we all know, win gold all-around that year in London.

Although she made the team and pushed through the pain, there were many moments where she wanted to give up. Thanks to her mom and some inspirational words of wisdom, she stuck it out. Liukin remembers her mom telling her after she came home crying from practice asking to quit that “you can never quit on a bad day.” So that became her mantra, and one she wants us to remember. No matter how hard things are, quitting on a bad day is never the best option.

After the 2008 Olympics, Liukin had learned just how hard it was to accomplish her dreams. She said, “If you set a goal for yourself and work hard for yourself every single day,” then you can make it all happen, even on the rainy days. “Remember what your dreams are” and everything will be okay, she said.

This idea came into play when it was time to decide whether or not Liukin wanted to compete in the trials for the 2012 Olympics in London. At age 22, she was considered "too old" for the sport, but that didn't stop her. She didn’t want to look back at London, whether she was on the floor or commentating, and have any regrets.

So she listened to her heart and went on the floor and competed at the trials. But instead of making it onto the team, she fell on the final move of her bar routine. As she laid on the ground and contemplated what she was going to do next, she remembered that mantra. She had to do everything she could in order to accomplish her goal so she got back up and finished the routine. And it was in that moment, when she was down and picked herself back up, that she received the first standing ovation of her life.

Instead of being upset about her failure, she cherished that moment where she learned about perseverance and moving forward no matter how hard things are. “Life isn’t always about winning the gold medal” but instead, it’s about “those kinds of moments when you fall down, literally or figuratively,” and keep going. According to Liukin, no matter what, you have to finish what you started because in the end, everything happens for a reason—so never quit on a bad day.
