Should You Forgive Your SO For Cheating?

$

0

When you are in a relationship, one of the most important things, if not the most important thing, is trust. When that trust is broken, either from lying or cheating, it takes a lot to fix. Six twenty-something women and one expert weigh in on if you really can recover from your significant other cheating on you. The answers are really split into two categories: no and maybe. Every situation and relationship is different, so there is no sure answer to tell you whether or not you should forgive your SO for cheating, but hopefully some of these responses help.

For some people, when someone cheats that is it. No forgiveness, nothing, just done and move on. For these women, that was the case:

1. “No- when they cheated on you, in that moment they were able to put you completely out of their mind. And it sets a precedent for the future of the relationship.” – Julia, sophomore at Western Washington University

2. “No. I did before and he just kept repeating it knowing he'd probably get away with it.” – Alice, a graduate of the University of Central Lancashire

3. “No, if they're cheating then they don't respect you or your relationship and if there's no respect then there's no foundation for love or trust.” – Sarah, senior at the University of Alabama

4. “No. I believe everyone has the ability to live their own life and make their own decisions (in most circumstances). I think that "cheating is a choice, not a mistake."– Annie, incoming freshman at the University of Vermont

Related: Could You Be Emotionally Cheating On Your SO?

For others, it really depends on how the relationship was before the infidelity occurred. It is not rare for the relationship to still be strong even after someone cheats. For these women, that was true:

5. “Really grey area. I think you have to look at your relationship from a bystander’s perspective. For example, if you can, you can look at your relationship more critically and see just how healthy it is for you. More often times than not, if your SO is cheating on you, it means there is something lacking in the relationship. So, figure out what it is, and if it's worth fixing. If not, it's time to move on.” – Lexi, junior at the University of Michigan

6. “I think it depends on the situation and the relationship. For me, I thought it was an absolute deal breaker until my SO made out with another girl at a party (that I was not at). I really enjoyed him and our relationship so I decided not to break up with him. However, I lost all trust and that really changed the dynamic of our relationship. We recently broke up and although it was not because of the cheating, it definitely did not help anything. I think I can forgive someone for making out with someone at a party but if my SO goes out of their way to sleep with someone else and continue to speak to them or others, then I think that's unforgivable and shows a lack of respect in the relationship.” – Jane, sophomore at Marist College

Related: Once a Cheater, Always a Cheater? Here’s the Truth

Although hearing from real girls about their real experiences is helpful and impactful, it does help to get an expert’s input. Jeffrey Sumber, LCPC and author of Renew Your Wows: Seven Powerful Tools to Ignite the Spark and Transform Your Relationship, says that forgiveness really depends on the relationship. “Forgiveness is one of those life skills that improves with time, maturity and unfortunately, pain,” he says. “There is no easy way to manage infidelity and dishonesty.” But as well, there are ways that help couples cope from ground zero and forward to the point where you decide if you'll remain in the relationship or move on. He says that an essential piece of the puzzle is discerning between forgiveness and "acceptance."

But once you have really dug into your feelings and understood what happened, then comes the decision of moving forward. "So, should you break up with a cheater? Sure. Should you remain with them and work on things? Sure," Sumber says. But, the truth is, if a partner has been dishonest in the past there is a stronger likelihood he or she will do it again, he explains. So stay in the relationship only if you're open to that statistical fact. If you tell yourself it won't happen again, you're in denial. If they tell you it will never happen again, they are in denial. Sumber also explains what to do if you are conflicted about what to do. “The best case scenario is sitting with each other and discussing how bad it felt to be lied to and how guilty they felt to lie to you,” he says.

It is important to explore what the circumstances were that led to the infidelity and only then can you truly move on.

19 Thoughts Every Girl Has During a Loveless Summer

You had a lot of big plans for this summer: finally get that perfect tan, catch up on some reading, take a road trip with your best friends, make some extra spending money at your summer job and maybe, just MAYBE, have that fairy-tale summer fling you’ve always dreamed of.

Unfortunately, you probably got home for the summer and realized that you left all of that dateable eye candy back at school, leaving you to spend a summer full of way too many solo froyo trips and movie dates with your mom. Don’t worry, collegiettes – you’re not alone! Here are 19 thoughts we’ve all had during a summer dry spell.

1. I don’t need a guy. I’m totally fine being single and free this summer!

2. Just kidding, I need a guy – ANY GUY – to come cure my summer boredom.

3. Where do people even meet guys when they’re not in college? The mall? The beach? Is there some kind of website where I can buy a summer fling?

4. Oh well—at least my friends are single, too. We’re all in this together! At least, that’s what I thought…

5. Sandy and Danny fell in love at the beach and I can’t even get a guy to rub sunscreen on my back. Sunburn, here I come.

6. Wow, I’m actually getting really tan! Too bad no one is going to get to appreciate my tan lines…

7. If I watch one more rom-com by myself, I WILL lose it. Seriously, who’s going to comfort me after an emotional re-watching of The Notebook?

8. Wow, that lifeguard is pretty cute. Maybe I should pretend to drown so he’ll give me CPR?

9. Maybe I’ll meet up with this guy I met on Tinder. It’s not THAT big of a deal that he uses “ur” instead of “you’re” … right?

10. I can’t even remember the last time I kissed a boy. What if I forgot how to kiss?!

11. You know what? I’ve got this. I have a whole season of The Vampire Diaries on Netflix to keep me occupied. I don’t need a guy to entertain me!

12. Whoops, I finished an entire season in two days. Let the manhunt continue.

13. I need to cuddle with someone. ANYONE.

14. Since Mr. Prince Charming clearly isn’t planning on making an appearance this summer, my new motto is:

15. Wow, that guy on my brother’s soccer team is really cute. I mean, is it REALLY that big of a deal that I’m three years older than him?

16. Ugh, I’m so hungry, but I have no one to go to dinner with.

17. Summer dating is hard – how am I supposed to flirt with someone if I don’t have class with him three times a week? Do I even remember how to flirt?

18. Summer sunsets are so pretty. This would be so romantic … if I had someone to watch it with.

19. Is summer almost over? Can I go back to school where there are actual parties and lots of cute guys?

Facebook Changes Its News Feed To Put Friends & Family First

Tired of seeing random posts from advertisers on Facebook before you can even glimpse at your cousin's picture of her adorable new kitten? According to USA Today, Facebook is reprogramming its News Feed algorithm to show users more posts of their friends and families, rather than advertisements and other irrelevant articles.

The company published "News Feed Values," a document explaining why certain posts will now come before others. The gist of the change is pretty straightforward. The News Feed aims to accomplish two tasks: to inform and to entertain. That's why friends and family should come first, while authentic communication will always beat spam and advertisements. As always, liking a media company's page will help you to see their posts, but you can choose to hide or unfollow posts and Pages to avoid seeing certain information.

Facebook's updates are already in effect, Tech Crunch reports, so your News Feed should already show posts from friends and family higher up on the home page than posts from advertisers, celebrities, media publishers and news outlets.

"When we launched News Feed in 2006, it was hard to imagine the challenge we now face: far too much information for any one person to consume," Adam Mosseri, Facebook's Vice President of Product Management, said in a statement. "That’s why stories in News Feed are ranked—so that people can see what they care about first, and don’t miss important stuff from their friends. If the ranking is off, people don’t engage, and leave dissatisfied."

This change may be Facebook's response to recent allegations of anti-conservative bias within its "Trending" section. An anonymous contractor for the site claimed that Facebook staff would knowingly pick and choose headlines as "Trends" based on their own biases, often curating liberal-leaning topics while avoiding conservative ones. Facebook has denied these claims, but they probably hope that adding transparency to the News Feed will avoid more controversy.

Mosseri explained in the statement, "We are not in the business of picking which issues the world should read about. We are in the business of connecting people and ideas—and matching people with the stories they find most meaningful. Our integrity depends on being inclusive of all perspectives and view points, and using ranking to connect people with the stories and sources they find the most meaningful and engaging."

Texas Women Will Probably Still Lack Abortion Providers for Years, Even After SCOTUS Win

$

The Supreme Court voted to throw out a restrictive Texas abortion law on Monday, giving pro-choice supporters a surprising win in what's been a tough few years for women's health and agency. However, even the dramatic ruling won't bring back the closed clinics anytime soon.

The law had already closed more than 20 facilities, but if had been upheld, the number of available clinics likely would have dropped to only 10. Unnecessarily stringent requirements for abortions to be preformed in expensive, hospital-like facilities put many of the smaller clinics that couldn’t afford upgrades out of business.

CNN reports that Justice Stephen Breyer wrote the majority opinion, stating that, “the surgical-center requirement, like the admitting-privileges requirement, provides few, if any, health benefits for women, poses a substantial obstacle to women seeking abortions, and constitutes an ‘undue burden’ on their constitutional right to do so.”

However, overturning the law that closed the clinics doesn't guarantee that they will be replaced, the Associated Press reports. Women in Texas may still be restricted to the current available clinics, as it could take years for new ones to open. This issue with creating new facilities lies in the sheer amount of preparation that is needed to reinstate them. In addition to a building, a clinic obviously needs employees, as well as certain supplies and licenses —and getting all that together takes time.

Currently, the main clinics are located in Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio, which does not account for women outside of heavily populated areas, and wait times can stretch to more than 20 days. Organizations like Whole Women's Health and Planned Parenthood are going to work on opening more Texas clinics, but leaders warned the AP that it would be a lengthy process.

Although SCOTUS's ruling undid a serious violation of women's rights, there's still a long road ahead for women in the fight for their right to choose.

Two Transgender Women Named Misty Are Running For Congress

The Utah and Colorado primaries held some exciting news this year: Voters have chosen two transgender women, both named Misty, to run for U.S. Congress as members of the Democratic party in November's election.

30-year-old Misty Snow of Salt Lake City will compete against Republican Senator Mike Lee. Snow is the first transgender person nominated by a major U.S. political party to run for a Senate seat, theSalt Lake Tribune reports.

"A lot of people have told me whether I win or lose, I'm already making a difference just by running," Snow told the Tribune.

Despite her historical status, Snow has not emphasized her sexuality. Instead, Snow has been campaigning on a progressive platform that directly challenges Lee, one of America’s most conservative senators.

Snow, a grocery store clerk, decided to enter the race because she wanted to offer voters an alternative to competitor Jonathan Swinton. Despite Swinton leading in the state convention, Snow garnered enough support to warrant a primary. Apparently, she was an alternative people were willing to take—unofficial primary returns showed that Snow lead over Swinton by nearly 20 percentage points.

According to the Tribune, Snow credited this success to her focus on "issues that Democrats care about," such as abortion rights. As a centrist Democrat, Swinton took middle-of-the-line stances on most issues, such as suggesting limits to abortion rights. This seemed to be a weak point for the 35-year-old Mormon massage therapist.

Snow's campaign also focuses on raising the minimum wage, providing paid parental leave, legalizing marijuana, reforming the criminal-justice system and reducing tuition for postsecondary education. Her progressive stances are reportedly inspired by Bernie Sanders' platform, so Snow is definitely #FeelingTheBern.

Meanwhile, transgender 33-year-old Misty Plowright won the Democratic nomination in Colorado to run for the House of Representatives against Rep. Doug Lamborn, Fox News reports. Plowright, who was also inspired by the Sanders campaign, describes herself as "an Army veteran, a self-educated woman, a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and a passionate social democrat."

Snow has lived openly as a woman since October 2014 and believes that being transgender, which is extremely rare in U.S. politics, will have a positive impact on the political community. "This shows LGBT people that being LGBT is not a barrier to running for political office," Snow said, according to the Daily Mail, "You can be you, and people will respect you for that."

Transgender rights have been at the focal point of social politics, especially after North Carolina passed a law banning transgender people from using the bathroom that corresponded to the gender with which they identified. Now, more than ever, may be the perfect time to have two transgender Mistys running for public office.

How You Can Actually Afford to Study Abroad

$

Studying abroad can be one of the best, most fulfilling experiences you’ll have in college. After all, it’s one of the only times in your life when you’ll get the opportunity to spend months exploring another country! However, with the costs of tuition, applying to the program, flights and living expenses, making the decision to study internationally can be a hefty financial investment. Luckily, there are several different ways to make your semester abroad more affordable, whether you’re headed for the streets of Paris or the cliffs of Ireland. Your bank account will thank you!

Apply for scholarships

Free money to study abroad? We’ll take it. There are tons of online databases that have scholarships available specifically for students who are studying abroad, such as IIEPassport Study Abroad Funding, StudyAbroad.com and All Abroad. If you already know where you’re going to study abroad, you can narrow down the huge lists of scholarships by searching by country or program.

One of the best study-abroad grants out there is the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which is very competitive but offers scholarships up to $5,000! More than 2,300 scholarships are awarded through the program, and the average award amount is $4,000. If you receive a Pell Grant or will be receiving one at the time of your study abroad program, this scholarship is definitely worth a shot.

Many study abroad program providers also offer scholarships to students who are participating in one of their programs. For example, AIFS, a leading study abroad program provider with programs all over the world, awards more than $600,000 each year in scholarships and grants for both summer and semester programs.

Your school can also be a valuable resource when searching for study-abroad scholarships. Grants offered through your university will usually be easier to get, given the smaller number of applicants. A quick visit to the study-abroad office is a great way to find out about school-specific scholarships, as well as other outside resources. Your school’s study-abroad website will likely have a list of all the available scholarships as well as information about how to contact a study-abroad adviser and find the study-abroad office on campus.

Be sure to check out academic department scholarships as well, as you may be eligible for aid based on your major.

“When it came down to funding my trip, I looked at scholarships first, and luckily I was able to receive a $750 scholarship from my theatre department,” says Travis Bihn, a junior at The Ohio State University. “Because of my dual major, I was able to apply (and later receive) a $2,500 scholarship from the psychology department for travel abroad expenses.”

Make sure to start your research early, though, because study-abroad scholarships for the coming year often have early deadlines! In general, spring program deadlines fall during September and October, while autumn program deadlines are in March and April.

Talk to a financial aid adviser

Your financial aid adviser is one of the first people you should talk to before jetting off for your semester overseas. If you already receive aid from the government, such as a Pell Grant, chances are that that aid can be applied to your semester abroad as well. In some cases, your school may even be able to give you extra money to cover the extra costs of studying at a foreign institution. Make sure to add up all of the expenses ahead of time to find out exactly how much your semester abroad will cost you and how much extra funding you may need.

Before making an appointment with an adviser, be sure to come up with a list of good questions to ask, such as:

  • How much will it cost to study abroad, including housing and extra expenses?
  • Will my financial aid be applicable to my semester abroad?
  • Can I extended my financial aid package to cover the extra costs of studying abroad?
  • Will I pay my home university’s tuition, or the tuition of the foreign institution?

You could also consider taking out a loan to help pay for your tuition, whether it’s government-funded or through a private bank. Study Abroad Loans is a website that offers loans specifically for students studying in another country. Although taking out a loan means dealing with those pesky interest fees, it can also be a viable way to make your study-abroad dreams a reality.

Start a fundraiser

Fundraising is a great way to make some serious cash, and with today’s technology, there are a million ways to do it. One way is to create a crowdfunding campaign on websites like GoFundMe and GoEnnounce. First, set a financial goal and explain your cause (i.e., why studying abroad is so important to you and how it would allow you to accomplish X, Y and Z). Then get the word out to friends and family through social media and watch the donations roll in!

If asking for money online isn’t your thing, there are other ways to get financial support, such as reaching out to close family members and friends with personal letters, asking people to donate to your travel fund in lieu of giving you birthday and holiday gifts or even seeing if someone you know with tons of frequent-flier miles would be willing to donate some of their miles to help pay for your plane ticket overseas.

Get a part-time tutoring job

While studying abroad, you’re going to want to have some extra money for going out to dinner, weekend trips and other necessary expenses (read: drinks with the girls). What better way to prepare for your upcoming semester in Paris (and make money while you’re at it) than to tutor lower-level French students?

First, head to your student employment office to find out if there are any tutoring jobs available on campus. Virtual tutoring is another great option to consider, as it’s flexible and allows you to tutor from the comfort of your own room. Websites like Tutor.com and TUTORCARE will pay you to tutor students on your own schedule, which means that it won’t get in the way of your classes and extracurriculars. By the end of the semester, you’ll have vastly improved your language skills and boosted your bank account!

Studying abroad is far from cheap, but with a little research and creative fundraising, your once-in-a-lifetime adventure in another country doesn’t have to be out of reach! Using these tips, you’ll soon be well on your way to that dream semester or year.

FDA Says You Really Shouldn't Eat Raw Cookie Dough

Put down your spatulas.

In a recent report from the Food and Drug Administration, the agency says the consumption of raw cookie dough is unsafe—not because of the classic salmonella-in-eggs excuse (which you don't actually have to worry about!), because of a recent outbreak of E. coli found in flour.

The FDA linked the outbreak to flour made in November 2015 at Kansas City, Mo. at a General Mills plant. Affected brands include Gold Medal, Gold Medal Wondra, and Signature Kitchens. There has been a recall of flour produced Nov. 14 and Dec. 4—So if you know you bought those brands of flour within that time period, you should throw it away.

Authorities at the FDA said that the contamination causes stomach pains, diarrhea and vomiting. While the illnesses can vary in severity, there have been 38 reported cases of problems stemming from the consumption of raw dough.

Of course, most people tend to link E. coli to products like raw meat and vegetables, so it may seem strange that such drastic measures are being taken for flour.

“Flour is derived from a grain that comes directly from the field and typically is not treated to kill bacteria,” Leslie Smoot, Ph.D., said in a statement released on the FDA’s website. “So if an animal heeds the call of nature in the field, bacteria from the animal waste could contaminate the grain, which is then harvested and milled into flour.” Smoot works as a senior advisor to the FDA and she is also a specialist in food safety, so she knows what she's talking about.

Because of this outbreak, the FDA says raw cookie dough should never be consumed—the risk of contamination is too high. Time to toss that batch you had saved up for Monday's new Bachelorette episode.

Leslie Jones Couldn't Find a Designer to Dress Her For the 'Ghostbusters' Premiere

Ghostbusters is easily one of the most highly-anticipated movies this summer, and with good reason. Some of Hollywood's most entertaining ladies are starring in the movie, including SNL's Leslie Jones. Even though Leslie might be relatively new to the big screen, we're certain that she'll have us laughing throughout the film. Given the abundant amount of promotions and the star-studded cast, it's likely that Leslie will be jumping from city to city to discuss and promote the movie. Before Ghostbusters hits theaters on July 15, the cast will attend a red carpet premiere. Considering that the upcoming premiere will be a massive event for Leslie, most people assumed that she already has her entire red carpet look assembled and ready to go. However, the actress took to Twitter to reveal that no designer wanted create a dress for her, simply because of her body type.

Taking to Twitter, Leslie posted a tweet in regards to her situation:

Clearly (and understandably so), Leslie wasn't satisfied with the fact that designers rejected her for her non-conventional body type. It seemed like she had already accepted this, until one designer reached out. Because emojis are all the rage right now, Christian Siriano responded to Leslie's tweet with two emojis that indicated he'd have no problem dressing the star for her big night.

And Leslie's response to Christian was basically all of us:

Considering that Christian has an amazing eye for detail and has designed stunning dresses in the past, we can't wait to see the masterpiece he creates for Leslie!

Brexit Vote Increases Racist Incidents & Hate Crimes in UK

Of all the reasons that prompted the U.K. to vote to leave the European Union last week, perhaps the most maddening one is voters' stance on immigration. ‘Leave’ supporters believed that allowing immigrants and refugees into the U.K. would increase the likelihood of terrorism in their country, and would also take jobs away from native-born British citizens.

Unfortunately, this clear case of xenophobia, or fear of other countries, has led to hate crimes and cases of racism to increase dramatically following the vote.

In Nottingham, BuzzFeed News reports, a pregnant woman wearing a hijab was harassed by a man who told her, “I’m going to need you to lift your dress to see if that’s a bomb you have hiding under there."

The woman needless to say was shocked and scared for her life following this altercation.

“I’m usually very confident and feisty, but I’m feeling a bit shaken, to be honest,” she told BuzzFeed. “It was the first time I’ve experienced something like this, and it’s one of those things that you don’t expect would happen to you. Plus the comment he made were extremely embarrassed and disturbing. It was sick of him to comment on my baby bump.”

And that’s not even the worst occurrence.

As a means of documenting these awful acts, the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) began to compile a list of hate incidents coming up after the vote that prove Islamophobia played a major factor in the referendum vote. The incidents have also been documented on social media under #PostRefRacism.

"We are witnessing the shocking extent of this with reports around the country of hate speech and minorities being targeted," Dr. Shuja Shafi, the MCB’s Secretary General told CNN. "We need leadership now more than ever before. Our country is experiencing a political crisis which, I fear, threatens social peace."

Many cases of non-white or non-native British people being told they have to leave the country have been reported, in addition to more violent crimes stemming from the racism clearly running rampant in the U.K. and throughout Europe in general.

According to NPR, racial crimes have seen a 57 percent increase since the referendum. NPR also told the story of a German woman living in London who is afraid to leave her home due to these incidents. She says she has had dog excrement thrown at her house and has been told, like so many others, to “go back home.”

To combat this expanding racism, Brits are wearing safety pins as a sign of protest, signaling that they will intervene in any racist incidents they witness and act as a human "safety pin" for people being harassed.

In light of the attacks that occurred on June 12 at Pulse nightclub, Lady Gaga, Caitlyn Jenner, Laverne Cox and many others joined to pay tribute to the victims of the Orlando shooting with a heartfelt video.

The shooting has been referred to as the worst mass shooting and the deadliest hate crime against the LGBTQ community at large in United States history. As a way to honor the victims of the attack, the Human Rights Campaign released a video, produced by Ryan Murphy, featuring celebrities identifying each of the victims individually, and offering accolade in order to honor their memory.

This List of the 50 Highest-Grossing Actors is a Glaring Example of Hollywood's Diversity Problem

$

It's no secret that Hollywood has been criticized for its lack of diversity, initially with the poor minority representation at this year's Oscars, and now again with the list of the highest grossing actors and actresses to date.

Scarlett Johansson has received very deserved praise for her spot as the highest grossing actress of all time, but there's just one issue here: she's only number 10 on the list of 50. Clearly the film industry is still dominated by male stars because out of all 50 people listed, only nine of them are women. Did we mention that all of the women are white? Yep.

While there is somewhat (key word: somewhat) decent representation of African American actors (Samuel L. Jackson, Morgan Freeman and Eddie Murphy are all in the top ten) there are no Latino or Asian actors of any gender. Sadly, we're not really surprised by this disappointing news, but we do know that something needs to change. Scarlett's on the same page.

"There’s something icky about me having that conversation unless it applies to a greater whole," Scar Jo told Cosmopolitan. "I am very fortunate, I make a really good living, and I’m proud to be an actress who’s making as much as many of my male peers at this stage… I think every woman has [been underpaid], but unless I’m addressing it as a larger problem, for me to talk about my own personal experience with it feels a little obnoxious. It’s part of a larger conversation about feminism in general."

Not only does the gendered wage gap need to end, but we need to start seeing some cultural representation in Hollywood that's different than the typical middle-aged white male. Whether it's through race, gender or sexuality we are ready to see change happen on the big screen.

How Often Do Democrats and Republicans Marry Each Other?

$
0
0

As the 2016 election heats up, it seems pretty clear that Democrats and Republicans do NOT get along. For many people, politics affects their lives outside of voting, too. Research has shown that the two parties will often avoid dating or living near each other. Some even refuse to approve of their children dating someone of outside of their party. Knowing this, data journalists and political scientists at FiveThirtyEight decided to do some research of their own to see how many Americans married someone of another party. They wanted to know who these people were, what affected this decision and how involved in politics they were.

The researchers studied a sample group of married registered voters in thirty states. They defined "marriage" within the study as male-female partners who lived together, shared a last name, were aged within 15 years of each other and were the oldest such couple within a household.

Researchers found that people tended to marry within their party. Only 30 percent of households were made up of a mismatched pair. However, even the mismatched pairs were not usually opposite-party ones, Democrats married to Republicans made up only a third of the couples with differing political views, while the rest were Democrats or Republicans married to Independents. In addition, men identified as the Republican within an opposite-party marriage twice as often as women did.

Overall, though, people preferred to live with a like-minded partner. The results showed that 55 percent of couples in the study were in a same-party relationship.

The findings indicated that young couples married outside of their party more often than older couples did. Researchers believed the reason for this was that younger voters, like us, were more likely to register as Independents. Surprisingly, the number of Democratic-Republican pairs was higher in the older population, meaning there were more couples of opposite parties in our grandparent's generation than in ours. Again, this probably relates to the growing number of Independents among Millennials.

The research went further than just individual couples. "Battleground neighborhoods," or those neighborhoods that seem so divided you'd think neighbors probably hated each other, were not as common as you might think. In fact, mixed-party pairs actually made up half of the couples in these neighborhoods. The variety of different political beliefs within one household likely means that these neighbors are accepting of different viewpoints and ideas.

Party identifications even affected the voter turnout rates of the couples. Those married to someone of the same party were much more likely to go out and vote than those married to someone of a different party. One reason for this may be that couples in mixed-party relationships are probably not super involved and active in politics—which is why they married someone with differing political views in the first place. Another reason may be that states with closed primaries bar Independents from voting. If your spouse can't come with you, you might not be motivated to go vote alone.

Politics is already a pretty divisive topic—adding a marriage into the equation could raise tensions even higher. If you're passionate about your political beliefs, it might be a good idea to seek out a like-minded partner, especially if you plan on voting consistently.

Anne Hathaway Pays Tribute to 'The Devil Wears Prada' On Its 10th Anniversary

In a recent interview with Variety, Anne Hathaway explains why she thinks The Devil Wears Prada was such a hit: “It’s aspirational. It’s a fairy tale, but it’s also rooted in reality. Everybody has had an experience like this. It looks great, but there’s also an emotionally resonant story.” Today, Hathaway celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the iconic film on Instagram in the most perfect way, movie quotes included.

Though she credits much of her Hollywood fame to her role as Andy Sachs, second assistant to fashion editor Miranda Priestly, she says that she wasn’t the casting director’s first choice by any means. “I’d never had a starring role in a grown-up movie. All my movies had been geared towards kids… I was just trying to basically not get in anyone’s way,” she said of the experience.

Still, the movie was wildly successful, earning more than 10 times its production costs at the box office, and to this day, we are still reciting its quotes.

In fact, the movie had such a memorable impact that Hathaway says, “I can be anywhere in the world and people come up and tell me about their relationship with The Devil Wears Prada.”

We're not surprised—how can it not be one of your faves?

The Next Oscars Might Not Be So White Anymore

Almost five months after #OscarsSoWhite trended nationwide on social media platforms, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced new attempts to diversify its membership. More than 600 industry professionals—41 percent of whom are people of color and 46 percent of whom are female—have been invited to join the Academy, 283 of them being international members representing 59 countries. New members include the likes of John Boyega of Star Wars fame and actress Brie Larson. A handful of others were also invited: Emma Watson, Michael B. Jordan, America Ferrera, Freida Pinto, Eva Mendes, Gabrielle Union and many, many more. The increase represents a three percent hike in minority membership.

The changes—no doubt inspired by adverse reactions to the 2016 Academy Awards, which featured a total of zero non-white acting nominees—are allegedly part of a larger, pre-existing initiative by the Academy to double racial and gender diversity of its members by 2020.

An admirable (though, delayed) move, the Academy’s decision raises an important consideration about diversity in Hollywood: it’s not just about on-screen diversity. It’s equally important to have a diverse group of people acting in feature films, as it is to have them assessing the value of these films.

It’s a small step, but it’s a step in the right direction.

15 Essentials That Should Always Be in Your Work Bag

It’s the first day of your summer job or internship. You grab your purse, phone, wallet and keys, and head out the door ready to take on the world. You’re totally prepared for anything and everything the work day has to offer, right? Wrong!

For the working collegiette, there is a bit more to a work bag than meets the eye (or in this case, arm). You would never leave home without your bag, so why leave without the essential items every work bag requires? While we don’t suggest that you carry every personal possession you own, like Mary Poppins or Hermione Granger, a quick survey of your current purse situation will probably leave you less than impressed. So you are always ready to be the Olivia Pope of your workplace, make sure you never leave home without these 15 necessities!

1. Aspirin

Focusing at work can sometimes be hard enough without the added stress of a headache. A bottle of aspirin will banish your headache (or cramps), and let you get back to what you need to do.

2. Hair tools

Whether your Pinterest up-do is falling out or you start having the worst midday hair crisis of your life, hair accessories like bobby pins and hair ties are musts. A beauty disaster is totally not professional.

3. Notepad and pen

The best employees and interns are always ready to take on any task at a moment’s notice. Sometimes these to-dos are lengthy or involve a lot of details. Being able to pull out a notepad and pen will not only show your employer that you are on top of things, but it will guarantee that you get the job done correctly.

4. Feminine products

If you have ever gotten your period and been stranded without provisions, then you probably vowed to never let that happen to you again. Without a couple tampons or pads in your bag, you are practically asking Mother Nature to hand you her monthly gift at the most inconvenient time. Never let your period surprise you at work again, and always keep a few feminine products on hand.

5. Breath mints or gum

It’s always a good idea to have breath mints or gum—especially for those days when you decide to have a burrito with extra peppers and onions for lunch, or if you just want to make sure you don’t have bad breath when your boss calls you in for a meeting (because they always seem to do so at the absolute worst moment).

6. Snacks

No one likes you when you’re hangry. Your roommate might be able to deal with your pre-lunch shenanigans, but your boss might not be so accommodating. Keep yourself energized and your hunger in check with a healthy, easy snack like an apple or granola bar.

7. Headphones

You know those days when you wake up and you don’t want anyone to talk to you before you’ve had your morning coffee? Your headphones are for those days. A quick Beyoncé jam session on the way to work will definitely get you in formation and ready to take on the day.

8. Tide To Go

A Starbucks run always sounds like a great idea until your grande chai tea latte is all over the front of your white dress and you’re five minutes from work. This little pen will go a long way. Just because your bank account might suffer from all those coffee runs, it doesn’t mean your outfit should too.

9. Phone charger

Need we explain? We all know that there is nothing worse than being at 12 percent by noon. Make sure that your phone isn’t ready to clock out before you are.

10. Laptop or tablet

Whether you prefer a laptop, iPad or tablet, always make sure that you have a device that allows you to get your work done in the office or on-the-go (or get a quick episode of Orange is the New Black in during your lunch break).

11. Nail polish

Every polish lover knows that toenail polish can last through an apocalypse while fingernail polish is likely to fall off if you even look at it the wrong way. If you carry a bottle of your current nail polish color in your bag, you’ll never get caught looking unpolished.

12. Business cards

You never know who you’ll meet, whether you are in a staff meeting or running errands for your boss. That’s why it is crucial for every aspiring career woman to have business cards on hand to let anyone and everyone know how fabulous and professional you are.

13. Flats

No matter how much you love heels, even the most comfortable ones have the potential to turn into weapons of mass destruction. You never know when your boss is going to ask you to trek across town or attend a low-key event after work. Whatever situation arises, take comfort in the fact that you have a less painful (but hopefully equally as cute) back-up plan.

14. Mini umbrella

As cute as getting caught in the rain looks in movies, it is unfortunately not as amusing in real life. No one wants to carry around a giant umbrella when there is only a 20 percent chance of rain, but rain is always more likely when you’re having a good hair day, right? A mini umbrella is the perfect bottom of the bag necessity to keep you dry regardless of the predicted forecast.

15. At least $20 (in cash)

When you have a wallet full of plastic it can be easy to forget that it’s never a bad idea to have some paper in there too. You don’t have to carry around wads of cash, but keeping $20 in your bag at all times ensures that you will never be stuck in a sticky situation without a cash buffer. Whether your credit card is maxed out or you just want to make splitting a bill with co-workers easier, a little cash will go a long way.

You can carry a big or small bag, a designer bag or your old favorite tote; what the bag looks like on the outside really doesn’t matter. What matters is that the inside contains everything you need to conquer any situation that comes your way during the work day.

Just Because I'm in a Relationship Doesn't Mean I'm Not My Own Person

By Alicia Ouyang

I really enjoyed being single. Whenever I say that to my friends, they look at me like suddenly I’ve grown two heads, but I really did. I enjoy my own company, hanging out with friends and family fulfills my social needs, and I have my own dreams and goals to work on.

Still, I’m a hopeless romantic like the next person. Relationship, dating, romance—those words always formed the mental image of a portal in my head, a magical portal that would transform your life. Suddenly, your hand always had another hand to hold onto, you had places and experiences to explore as a part of a couple, and of course who could forget about cuddling? Not that I needed those to feel fulfilled as a person, but having someone to fully embrace you at your best and worst as your partner was a dream.

I got into my first relationship four months into my freshman year of college. The first day I was no longer single, I felt like I was dreaming, in the sense where what I had imagined was real, but everything was otherwise the same. I still had my classes to go to, homework to worry about and exams to study for. I still enjoyed the same things I enjoyed when I was single.

While being in a relationship has given me so many benefits that I was unable to enjoy as a single person, it also has given me more obstacles. When a friend jokingly gave me a nickname in an online chat where she attached my boyfriend’s last name to my name, I was furious. I felt like I was labeled as a completely new person that was dependent on him. People often ask if I’m going to join certain activities because my boyfriend is part of them or vice versa, as if we’ve suddenly become the same person and have the exact same interests. As his girlfriend, I’m not here to follow his path. I’m here to blaze my own path while being by his side.

What I have learned with my boyfriend is that while we both enjoy spending time with each other and we have this bond that we don’t share with other people right now, we are still very singular. The reason why he likes me is not because I’m his, but because of the person that I am. We’re not one of those couples attached to the hip, because we are two separate people with two different lives to take care of. Half the time when people ask me what he’s doing or where he is, I wouldn’t be able to tell them. We take days off where we want to reconnect with ourselves, or focus on our work, and we respect when the other person needs to do that. We want to keep our relationship rewarding and nurturing, not demanding and stressful. As a result, our often-unplanned encounters are more meaningful because we’re both choosing to see each other, not because it’s part of our routine and we feel obligated to.

So to my independent women, if you’re in a relationship and feel guilty when you see those couples that are always together 24/7, don’t be. Balance, happiness and success can be achieved in so many different ways. You just need to find the way that works best for you.

Remember who you are and to love yourself, because it’s easy to forget that when pledging commitment to loving someone else. It’s easy to forget that, as a person, you have the right to your dreams and interests and chasing after them, even if they’re different. Loving someone doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice everything about yourself. At the end of the day, the only person you have to be with 24/7 is you, and that’s the person whose relationship with you is the most important.

14 Things Only Klutzy Girls Will Understand

Clumsy girls are everywhere. Chances are, you either know one or you are one. We can't all be as graceful as swans or as poised as ballerinas; however, if you're frequently described as awkward, foolish or just plain clumsy, it's likely you're a total klutz. You can't help it, you just seem to have this tendency to drop things on yourself, run into stationary objects and trip over your own two feet. You're not exactly proud of this, but it's not your fault. After all, you didn't choose the klutzy life--the klutzy life chose you

1. You're fairly certain you were actually born with two left feet

It's an absolute curse.

2. You trip over everything

It's a gift, really.

3. You can just as easily trip over absolutely nothing

This takes a surprising amount of skill.

4. You're convinced all household furniture is out to get you

Raise your hand if you've ever felt personally victimized by that couch in the corner.

5. Wearing high-heeled shoes is a disaster waiting to happen

You expect me to walk in five-inch stilettos and not fall flat on my face when I can't even master the kitten heel? Cute.

6. You're constantly waking up with strange, new bruises

Maybe you're fighting crime while you're asleep? The world may never know.

7. People always ask where you're getting your bruises from

And you never know how to answer them because you really don't have a clue. Please, someone enlighten me.

8. Wearing white is pretty much impossible for you

Stains, stains, and more stains.

9. Any sport is going to require a significant amount of time to learn

The process will be filled with plenty of embarassing fails, no doubt.

10. You experience the feeling of true terror when someone in your direction yells "catch!"

The lack of coordination is very real.

11. The dark is a scary place for you due to all the potential objects you can and will trip over

The daylight doesn't help much, so it's no surprise the night will inevitably be ten times worse.

12. Glass plates, dishes and cups are the enemy

Too many potentially dangerous objects waiting to be dropped.

13. Lighting birthday candles is obviously out of the question

A fire on your birthday? Not-so-happy birthday to you.

14. You are the queen of covering up your almost fall with a funny dance move and a good laugh

You obviously meant to do that. Duh

It's hard being a girl as it is. Being a total klutz definitely makes your daily life that much more difficult. Whether it's avoiding cutlery, certain colors, or pieces of furniture, every perpetually clumsy girl knows that her nature can and will get her into awkward, embarassing, and potentially painful situations. But, at the end of the day, there's nothing else to do but embrace your klutzy girl status in all it's foolish glory.

7 Reasons to Rock a Swimsuit This Summer

So you’re going on a beach vacation, and you have one fear: The dreaded bikini reveal. Even though you've been waiting all year for this vacation, when you go to pack, you cringe at the sight of your itsy bikinis. The body shaming needs to stop! Throw the bathing suit in your suitcase, and get excited to flaunt what you've got. So many of us are too nervous to wear a swimsuit, when we really have no reason to be. Read on to find out how to feel your best even in your smallest triangle tops!

1.  Remember that you’re beautiful, no matter your shape or size

These days, the media fill our minds with messages that tell us our bodies are not good enough to be shown off, and that is so far from the truth. We should all be able to feel comfortable in a bathing suit, with all our perfect imperfections (to quote John Legend). Everyone’s personality is different and unique, and we don’t shame anyone for that; We praise them! So why don’t we do the same for our bodies?

2. Your body works hard all day just keeping you alive, so you should show it off

Each body has about 650 muscles, 206 bones, and 12 organ systems. These body parts all work together day in and day out to keep us alive and well. Rock the body you have and acknowledge every bit of it. Thank your body for what it is and what it does—don’t think you need to change it for other people.

3. How else are you going to achieve that sun-kissed glow?

Sometimes a slight touch from the sun can give you more confidence in the way you look and make you feel better about what you wear. Not only does a sun-kissed tan let you rock those white jeans that only come out for a few short months in the summer, but also will allow you to break out your darkest bronzer, and—for all you makeup fiends—allow you to go foundation free. The bronzed glow can only be achieved to perfection if you’re wearing a bathing suit, so break out the swimsuit and sunscreen before it’s too late!

4. Bathing suits are SO summer chic

From designer shops like Everything but Water to more affordable stores like Target, there are too many cute options to choose from. Whether you go for sporty chic or sexy cutouts, there is something for everyone. No girl should be afraid to buy a super cute swimsuit, because it’s money well spent. And even if you don’t feel comfortable rocking a two-piece, there are tons of beautiful one-pieces to choose from!

5. There is no such thing as the “ideal” body

It is perfectly normal to have some fat on your body, and if you have barely any, that’s fine too. People often forget that slamming women for being “skinny” is no more acceptable than criticizing bodies by calling them overweight. Society's perception of the ideal body has changed over time, and we need to remember that there is no such thing as the ideal body. No matter your body shape, you should never be shamed for the body you have. So let’s just drop the criticisms and accept our own bodies for what they are—beautiful.

6. It’s ridiculously hot outside, so why would you want to be wearing more clothes?

When the temperatures start to rise, fabric gets more and more scarce. It only makes sense that the hotter it gets, the less amount of clothing people wear. This gives you a new excuse to wear minimal clothing, such as a bathing suit. The hot weather makes it perfectly acceptable to just lounge around in your one-piece or bikini, so whip out that magazine and get your sun daze on!

7. It’s an excuse to hit the pool or the beach with your best friends

Buying a new bathing suit not only gives you an excuse to shop but also gives you an excuse to hit the beach whenever the opportunity arises. One of the best parts of coming home from college is getting to hang out and catch up with all your best friends—and the beach is one of the best places to do it. So grab your swimsuit and your best friends, and hit the waterfront!

There is no need to fear the beach or the pool just because you have to wear a bathing suit! Learn to love your body, and celebrate all that it does for you. Collegiettes, it's time to put on your favorite bathing suit, grab your sunscreen, and make your way to the beach!

Bill Cosby Just Became the First Person to Have a UConn Honorary Degree Revoked

In 1996, Bill Cosby was awarded an honorary Fine Arts doctorate by the University of Connecticut. On Wednesday, the board of trustees unanimously voted to revoke the award. This marks the first time in history that the school has ever revoked an honorary degree, according to the Hartford Courant.

The Courant reports that the vote followed a plea made to the board of trustees in March by Daniel Byrd, president of student government at UConn. "He does not deserve this distinction from such a prestigious university," Byrd said. By May, student government received unanimous support from faculty, staff and students, and the University Senate.

More than 50 women have come forward to accuse Cosby of sexual misconduct, and Cosby admitted in a deposition that he drugged women before trying to sex with them.

In a statement released by UConn Provost Mun Y. Choi, Choi notes that the university understands Cosby's right to a fair trial. However, what has been admitted already provides enough reason to revoke his degree.

"The University of Connecticut, and all institutions of higher education, must work diligently to prevent sexual assault and to support and care for victims," Choi said. "Cosby has admitted to conduct that is contrary to the values of the University of Connecticut. The University would not have awarded an Honorary Degree to Mr. Cosby if the breadth of his past actions were known at the time of conferral."

Cosby is set to go to trial in Pennsylvania.
