8 Popular Restaurants That Fit Your Dietary Needs

$

With certain diets like paleo, vegetarianism and gluten-free becoming more popular by the minute, many restaurants are making leaps and strides to make their menu more diet-friendly. While it can be difficult to go out to eat with certain dietary restrictions, we’ve found several good picks that won’t make ordering complicated. Here are eight great restaurants no matter what your diet!

1. Stacked

With four locations on the west coast, Stacked, which serves everything from nachos and pizzas to delicious salads, is an extremely diet-friendly restaurant that can cater to all your needs. You order by choosing ingredients via the iPad menu, allowing you to customize your meal to your diet. “I am gluten-free and they have a wide range of amazing gluten-free dishes (hamburgers, mac and cheese, cookies, pizza, [etc.]),” says Dani, a freshman at California Lutheran University, “It is a must go to!”

Not only does Stacked offer over 159 gluten-free ingredients, but it also makes eating paleo and vegetarian easy with its customizable menu. If you’re paleo, opt for something like the wings or one of Stacked’s many burgers (without a bun). If you’re vegetarian, try a salad (or make your own) or even one of the famous Stacked Macs—the many combinations of gourmet mac and cheese options they offer.

2. Chipotle

Just because you’re following a diet doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself of the restaurants everyone else goes to! Chipotle is one of the many chains that offers great gluten-free and vegetarian options. Lee, a sophomore at Christopher Newport University, says that Chipotle is great at catering to her dietary needs. “It’s awesome because I can eat everything in a bowl,” she says. “The only thing I’m missing is the flour tortilla!”

If you don’t eat meat, opt for their Sofritas, tofu that’s vegan- and vegetarian-friendly. Check out their special diet information online, which lets you know the types of ingredients in all their food!

3. Red Robin

Red Robin, known for their gourmet burgers, has some great options for a gluten-free diet! They offer a complete Wheat/Gluten Allergen Menu for those following a gluten-free or paleo diet, and they always have gluten-free buns and lettuce wraps. Lee says that “they make sure to ask if the customer ordering a gluten-free bun has an allergy in order to make sure there is no cross contamination,” so even if you have a severe allergy, you’re in the clear!

If you’re looking for vegan or vegetarian options, you’ll also be able to find them at Red Robin, even though it’s a burger joint. They offer garden burgers as well as meatless options for any burger or sandwich at no additional charge. In addition, they carry a wide range of other entrees and salads, which they can customize to meet your dietary needs.

To see what you can eat at Red Robin, go online and use their Interactive Allergen Menu, which you can customize to your personal diet.

4. Outback Steakhouse

If you follow a gluten-free or paleo diet, you’re probably getting tired of those measly excuses for a “gluten-free menu” that usually just contain a few salad options. If you’re sick of salads and other sad substitutes, visit Outback Steakhouse. They have a huge gluten-free menu that will help guide you through the regular menu and tell you what to avoid for your diet.

Outback’s gluten-free menu offers options under all categories of the menu—not just salads! Opt for the burgers, sandwiches or their signature favorites like lamb, chicken and baby back ribs.

5. Olive Garden

No matter what your dietary preferences are, Olive Garden is a must-see. If you’re a vegetarian, you’ve got salads, soups and endless pasta options. If you’re avoiding gluten, take a look at their separate Gluten-Sensitive Menu. You’ll find salads, a few pasta options as well as regular entrees.

Not only is it possible (and relatively easy) to eat paleo, vegetarian or gluten-free at Olive Garden, but it’s even possible to follow a vegan diet too! Olive Garden offers seven types of eggless pastas from angel hair to capellini, and there’s always the house salad and a side of steamed veggies!

6. P.F. Chang’s

No matter whether you’re vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free, we all crave Chinese food from time to time! P.F. Chang’s has an extensive menu with awesome options for different diets. There are multiple options on each menu for vegetarians (we recommend the stir-fried eggplant and veggie fried rice), and there’s a separate gluten-free menu.

The gluten-free menu offers tons of options, from noodles and rice to soups and entrees. Many items, like Buddha’s Feast, the Coconut-Curry Vegetables and Shanghai Cucumbers overlap, so they’re both gluten-free and vegetarian!

7. The Cheesecake Factory

With the word “cheese” in the name, one might think that the Cheesecake Factory wouldn’t be the best option for vegans, but the case is quite the contrary. With such a huge menu, the Cheesecake Factory can cater to almost any diet!

If you’re sticking to a vegan diet, you’ll have multiple options under every menu subheading (appetizers, salads, sides, pastas, etc.). You can order almost any salad without cheese or meat—and nine of the dressings available are vegan, You can choose from six pasta types and four sauces, and there are a number of healthy sides as well, like fresh broccoli or hummus and celery sticks. If you’re a vegetarian, your range of options is even bigger!

If you’re gluten-free, the Cheesecake Factory has an abundance of options. There are tons of salad options for a side, appetizer or meal, including the Fresh Kale Salad, Warm Asparagus Salad, Modern “Waldorf” Salad and many more. There are great lunch specials you can try like the Shepard’s pie and grilled salmon, tons of burgers and even gluten-free pasta. Not to mention the steak dishes, breakfast options and of course the desserts!

8. Domino’s

When you think Domino’s, you probably don’t think “diet.” But despite how unhealthy pizza can be (not to mention those delicious cinnamon sticks), there are some alternatives that might fit your dietary preferences; plus we all need a little junk food delivered to our door every now and then.

Domino’s offers gluten-free crust for those who are looking to reduce their gluten intake. Their Gluten Free Crust contains no wheat, rye, or barley and has a gluten content of less than 20ppm (the FDA’s standard for what can be considered gluten-free). If you suffer from celiac disease, you should probably steer clear though, as all the dough is made in the same place so there’s likely cross-contamination.

Just because you don’t follow a “normal” diet doesn’t mean you should be deprived of going out for a great meal with your friends! While it may seem impossible to enjoy a meal out when you’re dealing with complicated dietary preferences, there are actually tons of restaurant options for different diets… so you don’t have to be that girl with the dietary restrictions anymore!

If you're a Bachelorette fan, you are probably already counting down the days until the upcoming season's premiere. But we have been given a gift to hold us over until May 23 arrives. That's right—meet JoJo's guys! With 26 men and only one woman, things are bound to get a little strange. Read on for our weirdest first impressions.

1. Evan

Evan is an erectile dysfunction specialist—yup, you read that right. So he spends his days helping other men get it up. We couldn't help but laugh. He also pointed out that his relationship deal-breakers are "girls with chipped nail polish, girls who talk too much, narcissists, clingers, girls who have serious food allergies." Okay, then.

2. Colin

Looks pretty normal, right? Well, here's the catch—his nickname is Coley. Last time we checked, that was a girl's nickname for Nicole. Sorry, not sorry.

3. Brandon

Brandon simply looks like a normal hipster. But that's the problem—hipster is his job title for the show. We picture him spending his days at coffee shops, wearing beanies and the like. Also, we are pretty sure he will show up wearing some type of scarf on the first night.

4. James S.

James is a self-proclaimed Bachelor superfan. Nothing wrong with that—except that is his full job description. So basically he's unemployed during hiatus?

5. Vincent

Vincent is super cute, but his nickname is Vinny and he's a barber—we can't ignore the guido similarities.

6. Wells

If his odd name wasn't enough, his jacket certainly is. We're not huge fans of the pins and patches. The worst part? He doesn't like pizza. Bye!

7. Nick S.

The bandana is an ultimate no. You're a man, not a dog. Also, stahp with the Nicks already!

Which contestant gave you the worst first impression, collegiettes?

Katy Perry & Selena Gomez Unite Against Orlando Bloom Drama

When the media starts drama in a celeb's life, the best way to deal is to take it with a grain of salt. And Katy Perry is doing just that.

After extremely grainy photos surfaced of Katy's beau Orlando Bloom kind of, sort of but probably not really canoodling with Selena Gomez at a Vegas club, rumors started to circulate like crazy. Despite Perry’s initial Twitter response to the reports, she isn’t letting the media affect her. In fact, she is willing to put all of this behind her, and she is encouraging the rest of the world to follow her lead.

And it looks like Selena Gomez is definitely on board.

There is no denying that level of girl power. Hopefully, all of this will die down soon, and Perry and Bloom can get back to enjoying their relationship—sans the media butting into their lives.

Donald Trump's Former Butler Says Obama Should Be Killed

Uh-oh! Donald Trump's former butler, 84-year-old Anthony Senecal, wrote on his personal Facebook page that President Obama, "should have been taken out by our military and shot as an enemy agent in his first term." This is in the midst of public scrutiny direct towards Trump for the support he's received and encouraged from white supremecists, including Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.

His statement, despite only being visible to his Facebook friends, was screenshotted and posted by Mother Jones on Thursday, along with several other violent posts from Senecal's page. In the posts, Senecal and his Facebook friends say Obama should be hung, refer to him as a Muslim, and call him racial slurs. These posts seem to have caused enough stir for the Secret Service to investigate the matter, The New York Times reports, though Hope Hicks, a spokeswoman for the Trump campaign, said that "We totally and completely disavow the horrible statements made by him."

Still, it appears like Mr. Senecal stands by everything he has written in his page, as he confirmed to Mother Jones: “I wrote that. I believe that.”

Despite this, however, Trump’s presidential campaign isn’t slowing down. All the other Republican candidates have dropped out, so it seems like Donald Trump will almost certainly become the Republican nominee.

Meghan Trainor Fell While Performing & We've Never Loved Her More

It looks like Meghan Trainor might have been hitting her moves a little too hard since she accidentally fell at the end of her performance of “Me Too” on last night’s Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The songstress attempted to end her performance with a bang, but it didn't quite go as expected.

After trying to catch her balance by holding onto her mic stand, it all just went downhill from there. Then, being the total sweetheart that he is, Jimmy plopped himself on the floor right beside her.

But, let’s face it: this has been all of us at one point or another—or possibly even multiple times.

Meghan then took to Instagram to point out that although she may have fallen, she knows she absolutely SLAYED the stage, which is basically all that matters when you’re an international sensation and all-around role model.

This is certainly one way to end a performance. But don’t worry, Meghan—it happens to the best of us.

Woman Was Sent Home From Work for Not Wearing Heels

Business flats are probably one of the greatest inventions to date. We should all be able to look professional and presentable without wanting to cut our feet off at the end of the work day!

Unfortunately, some people do not see the beauty in this. According to Cosmopolitan, a woman in London showed up to her first day of work as a receptionist in “smart, black flats” and was promptly sent home, without pay, for “refusing to change into the dress code-required 2- to 4-inch heels.”

Nicola Thorp, the women in question, told the BBC that when she pointed out that the male receptionists were not wearing heels (a pretty incredible response under pressure!), she was merely laughed at for making such a ridiculous statement.

Furthermore, when Thorp asked if they were able to provide her with a reason that proved wearing flats would impair her to do her job, they failed to answer.

"I was expected to do a nine-hour shift on my feet escorting clients to meeting rooms. I said 'I just won't be able to do that in heels’," Thorp told the BBC.

Although the incident happened several months ago, Thorp has recently felt comfortable enough to come forwards about the sexism that she encountered in the workplace. She states that it is not the company itself that is at fault, but the law that allowed for the sexist regulations to be legal. She has now launched an online petition that aims for the government to take action and make it illegal for companies to force employees to wear high heels at work.

“Current formal work dress codes are out-dated and sexist,” reads the petition description.

Thorp told the BBC, "I think dress codes should reflect society and nowadays women can be smart and formal and wear flat shoes.” This could not be any truer. We can only hope that Thorp’s efforts are rewarded and that this outlandish and sexist rule is changed in the near future.

New Emojis Could Be Coming Soon That Actually Represent Women

On Tuesday, a group of progressive Google employees presented a proposal to the Unicode Consortium (the group that controls which emojis make it to your phone) advocating for the addition of 13 new emojis, according to BuzzFeed News.

The goal of the new emojis, as stated in the proposal, is to “represents a wide range of professions for women and men with a goal of highlighting the diversity of women’s careers and empowering girls everywhere.”

The new emojis will show women actually, you know, working—as most women do, most of the time—rather than just getting married, getting haircuts and making random arm and hand signals, as female emojis currently tend to do. They'll even get to do a bunch of different kinds of work, like music, health care and farming.

Women have been poorly represented in the emoji world for a while now. A survey conducted by the Always #LikeAGirl campaign found that “48% of girls ages 16 to 24 believe that female emojis are stereotypical,” and “roughly 42% of the same group think emojis illustrate "limited representation of females’ interests.” Basically, emojis have just been further supporting stereotypical depictions of women in society.

According to BuzzFeed, lack of diversity and equality has been a topic of discussion regarding emojis ever since their debut in 2011. They recently added a wide array of skin tone options, as well as images of same-sex relationships and families, into their hieroglyphic language. However, people still want them to go further. This is why the proposal not only urges for equal representation of men and women on the emoji keyboard, but also presses for representation of those who do not identify with any particular gender.

Even though emojis might seem pretty simple and frivolous, the creation of each one requires intense research before they can be approved. Since this proposal is still in the early stages, we have no idea what the results will be. The next Unicode update is currently set for mid-2017 and we can only hope that these gender-equalizing emojis are a part of it.

Canadian Boy Genius Discovers Lost Mayan City

William Gadoury, 15-year-old Canadian boy genius interested in ancient Mayan civilization, was studying maps of Mayan cities and comparing them to constellations when he noticed that the constellations appeared very similar to the maps, according to The Telegraph.

The correlation he found, that the location of ancient Mayan cities were linked to the stars, was a discovery that no other scholar had made in years of research and one that lead to the discovery of a long-lost Mayan city.

“I was really surprised and excited when I realized that the most brilliant stars of the constellations matched the largest Maya cities,” he told the Journal de Montréal.

Once he found the correlation, he realized that one of the constellations did not having a linked city. Gadoury found the projected location on Google Maps and saw that the city would have been in dense Mexican jungle.

He contacted the Canadian Space Agency, who decided to take satellite photos of the site—And what they found was striking. There did indeed appear to be pyramids and structures at the location. In fact, the city might have been one of the largest Mayan cities.

In honor of his unbelievable discovery, Goudry was given the opportunity to name the city. He decided on K’aak Chi, which means Fire Mouth.

Goudry, along with many interested archeologists, hopes to one day visit the city. A journey to such a remote part of the jungle would be costly, but the historic knowledge gained would be well worth the effort.

Sorority Woman Kidnapped and Beaten by Her Tinder Date

This is important news for all Tinder users. A Kansas college student is accusing a 30-year old man she met on Tinder of battery and kidnapping her,  according to BuzzFeed News. She was reportedly held captive in his trailer for a week.

The two had gone on one normal date before the incident occurred. On April 12, the man reportedly picked the student up at her sorority and drove her to his trailer. There they smoked marijuana with a few of his friends, with whom he accused her of flirting. When the other men left the suspect beat her and would not let her leave, saying that she had to wait for her wounds to heal before she could be returned to school. He also allegedly choked her and forced her to contact her friends through Facebook to make them believe she was fine.

She appeared back at her sorority on April 18, beaten and bruised.

[She] stated she felt she could not escape due to Allen being next to her the entire time, her cell phone not working, she did not know where she was, and because she was too ‘high, stunned, and exhausted,’” BuzzFeed reports the police affidavit stated.

She was allowed to leave after days of begging for her freedom in exchange for her silence on the incident, but the man, Shane Steven Allen, has now been arrested.

This incident shows how important it is never to go on a Tinder date without a working phone or a ride home. You really can meet some pretty creepy people on Tinder.

The Domino's staff in Salem, Ore., makes it a priority to know their regular customers well. That's why, according to BuzzFeed News, the absence of a regular customer's nightly order was a cause for concern. When manager Sara Fuller and her team noticed that Kirk Alexander, 47, hadn't order his typical midnight meal for several days, they were worried.

USA Today reports that Alexander had been ordering from Domino's almost every day for the past seven years. Accordingto BuzzFeed, Fuller sent one of the restaurant's drivers to check on Alexander at his home. When the driver arrived, he saw lights on and knocked. However, when no one answered, the driver returned to Domino's and called emergency services. Two Marion County deputies arrived and heard Alexander calling for help, then forced their way into the house and found him in need of immediate medical attention.

The Domino's staff members have visited Alexander in Salem Hospital, where he is in stable condition. No matter how you feel about the quality of their pizza, Domino's is certainly a pizza chain that cares.

A Pennsylvania woman who was murdered by her boyfriend on May 2 recorded the whole thing on her smartphone, Cosmopolitan reports.

When Wesley Webb, 40, got into a heated argument with her boyfriend Keith Smith, 43, she made the smart decision to start recording the dispute. According to the Times of Chester County, Smith swore at his girlfriend repeatedly in the recording before shooting her. He then attempted to shoot himself. While Smith was murdering his girlfriend, three children were also in the house—and they were the ones who called 911. Webb's sister and brother-in-law are now fighting for custody of Webb's two children, Cosmo reports, and have set up a Go Fund Me page to raise money for the kids.

Among Smith's multiple charges are first degree murder and endangering the welfare of children. His unsuccessful suicide attempt landed him in the hospital, where he is now in stable condition. County District Attorney Tom Hogen put the essence of the despicable murder bluntly. "This was a savage, selfish, and cowardly murder," he said in a statement. Under Pennsylvania law, the recording will be admissible in court.

This New 'Pretty Little Liars' Teaser Has Us All Kinds of Freaked Out

Season six of Pretty Little Liars ended a couple of months ago, and as usual, we were left with more questions than answers. Between discovering Jessica DiLaurentis has a twin sister who is Charlotte’s real mother, finding out Alison’s husband is plotting against her, and seeing Hanna’s unconscious body being dragged away by a mysterious figure, we’re more confused than ever.

Well, it looks like we’ll be getting our questions answered sooner than we thought. Yesterday, a teaser for season seven was posted on PLL’s official Instagram page, announcing the show's return next month. From what they've decided to share with us, it seems clear that someone is going to die—or more specifically, be murdered.

Read More: 75 Thoughts We’ve All Had While Watching 'Pretty Little Liars'

In the short clip from the upcoming season, Aria, Emily and Spencer are seen digging what can only be assumed is a grave. Emily is on the verge of tears, saying, “I don’t know if I can live with this.” Spencer, in her signature matter-of-fact tone, says, “This is the only way. When it ends like this, it’s called murder.”

With the hashtag "Save Hanna" in the caption, it seems like this season will be focused on the three girls attempting to save their friend from "A" (or, as they're now signing their texts, "A.D."). The show's creator Marlene King and Ashley Benson, who plays Hanna, have both insinuated that none of the girls are safe from getting killed off, so Hanna could very well be the one getting murdered this season. However, as all long-time fans of the show know, nothing is as it seems in Rosewood. All we can do now is tune in for the season premiere on June 21 and hope all our questions will be answered.

Yes, I'm Bernie or Bust. No, I'm Not Crazy.

It’s true, I’m Bernie or Bust. No I’m not crazy, and yes, I believe a Trump presidency will be catastrophic, but it’s for this reason why I’m only voting for Bernie Sanders. As a 21-year-old, this was the first election where I could vote in the primaries. I remember scrolling through Facebook seeing Hillary’s announcement video and thinking to myself, “Hell yeah, women empowerment!” But honestly I didn’t feel a call to action, like I had to jump on the Hillary train. That feeling didn’t come until I saw an article on Bernie Sanders. One paragraph in, I knew he was my candidate. Every issue he spoke about resonated in my soul. These were the same issues I passionately annoyed my friends about, and now there was a figurehead to my concern and passion for change.

This passion turned into bitter frustration, however, once debates, the media, and voter suppression slyly tilted the scale towards Hillary. I considered myself to be a lifelong Democrat, but this election made me come to the crushing realization that the Democratic party is corrupt.

Time after time Bernie has proven to be a stronger candidate. He crushes Trump in every poll by at least ten points compared to Hillary, who only beats Trump by a mere six points, and sometimes loses to Trump by single digits. Bernie beats Hillary among independents by a margin of 50 percent, and considering independents are 43 percent of America’s voters, that gives Bernie a huge advantage in the general election. Bernie has momentum, drawing crowds of over 28,000 and counting.

Yet he is dismissed, pinned as a “pie in the sky” candidate. But this is when Bernie is talked about at all, considering major news networks only mention Bernie a whopping 2 percent of the time compared to Hillary’s 32 percent.

But it’s not that surprising considering CNN is owned by Time Warner Cable, which just so happens to be one of Hillary’s top donors. It’s not that surprising that Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chair of the DNC, worked as one of Clinton’s campaign co-chairs in her 2008 presidential run. It’s not that surprising that Debbie Wasserman Schultz went on national television and told the world that super delegates “exist to make sure that party leaders and elected officials don’t have to be in a position where they are running against grassroots activists." It’s not that surprising that the Clinton campaign has been accused of multiple instances of voter fraud and suppression. It’s not that surprising that Bernie Sanders is losing.

From the beginning, this election has been about getting Bernie Sanders out of the race, no matter what it takes. It was to be expected, when you’re a threat to the establishment, the establishment will obviously take notice. The problem with this election was that the DNC and the Clinton Campaign got caught. Now they are going to have to live with the consequences which are people, just like me, who have lost their faith in the Democratic party.

Bernie or Bust is not about being a sore loser, it’s about letting our voices be heard. It’s about standing up to corruption. It’s about creating an actual democratic voting system. It’s about taking control of our country and sending a message to the DNC saying, “We are not okay with this.” If we want to defeat Trump, Bernie is our best chance. If we want to restore democracy within America, Bernie is our best chance. If we want to take control of our own country, Bernie is our best chance. I am Bernie or Bust because he is the salvation America needs.

No one knows what is in store for this election, but one thing I do know is that it’s not over. Clinton’s delegate lead is down to a mere 283 ahead of Bernie. With 830 delegates left to go, it is without a doubt that it will be a contested convention in July. There’s a possibility that Bernie can come from West Virginia strong and sweep the remaining states, going into the convention with more delegates, more momentum and more favorability. If that was the case, super delegates could switch their stance, making Sanders the Democratic nominee. I guess we will just have to wait and find out. Until then, we Bernie supporters will keep donating, phone banking and canvassing.

The revolution isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. So Bern on Bernie fans—It’s far from over and I’m sure as hell going to keep fighting.

Emma Watson Named in the Panama Papers

Emma Watson was recently revealed as one of the celebrities named in the Panama Papers, the documents containing the names of people with offshore companies and accounts.

Apparently, Watson's company was set up in the British Virgin Islands to protect personal details about herself. Her representatives told the Spectator the following:

"Emma (like many high-profile individuals) set up an offshore company for the sole purpose of protecting her anonymity and safety. U.K. companies are required to publicly publish details of their shareholders and therefore do not give her the necessary anonymity required to protect her personal safety, which has been jeopardised in the past owing to such information being publicly available. Offshore companies do not publish these shareholder details. Emma receives absolutely no tax or monetary advantages from this offshore company whatsoever – only privacy."

Watson isn't the only one—other reports have revealed Simon Cowell, Jackie Chan, Sarah Ferguson and Vladimir Putin also have ties to the documents.

Amy Schumer Takes On Sizeism in Her Latest Sketch

Amy Schumer has been killing it lately with the sketches on her show, Inside Amy Schumer. In the past few weeks, she has taken on controversial issues, from women’s healthcare to gun control. Now, she’s tackling sizeism and the difficultly women face when shopping for clothes over a size eight.

The sketch begins with Schumer shopping for a shirt in a size 12, only to be silenced by a saleswoman who says, “Could you keep your voice down? You’re scaring the thinner customers.”

The saleswoman pretends to not even comprehend Schumer’s request for a larger size, but then takes Schumer to a section she says is made specifically for Schumer’s “situation.” However, instead of a section of the store, the saleswoman takes Schumer to a field with cows and…Lena Dunham? “I asked for a turtleneck and they brought me here,” Dunham says to Schumer.

Upon returning to the store, the associate ends up selling Schumer not the shirt in the size she requested, but a tarp cover. To add to the offense, she includes a mall pretzel in the shopping bag because, “We assume that’s where you’ll be going next.”

Like all of Schumer’s sketches, it is a hilarious yet harsh reality check. She truthfully addresses the reality women face when shopping outside of the typical (and unrealistic) range of sizes zero through eight that a majority of clothing stores carry. This sketch serves as a reminder that women have a diverse range of body sizes and stores should carry clothing that reflects that diversity, not just sizes for the select few who fit society's idealistic standards of what women should look like.

What to Do If You Change Your Mind About Grad School

$

After four long years of undergrad, taking on a graduate degree isn’t for everyone. If you were planning to attend grad school and ended up changing your mind, or if you’ve already started grad school and decided you don’t want to continue, you’re not alone! Changing your mind about grad school may seem like a huge deal, but just know that you have plenty of other options when it comes to your future.

What to do if you’ve changed your mind about grad school completely

So you’ve decided that you no longer want to attend grad school. Don’t stress yourself out! It’s okay that you changed your mind. Even if you’re unsure of what you want right now, you have time. You can always make the decision to go to grad school later on.

“You should examine your motivation for applying to grad school,” says Lesley Mitler, co-founder of Early Stage Careers.“Do you really want to continue your studies or are you fearful of leaving school?” She explains that “if you accept an offer at a grad school and change your mind about that school or [about] attending grad school at all, you can rescind that acceptance—you are not legally bound to attend.”

Even if you are still considering grad school, it’s important to be aware of your career options as well. “You should research and understand the jobs you qualify for and apply to those that appeal to you,” says Mitler.

Alexandra Whitehead, a senior at SUNY Buffalo State, had been planning on attending grad school since she was a preteen. Once she started undergrad, however, she changed her mind. “Every semester, I was mentally drained from the work and would be fed up with school,” she says. “Until recently, it didn't occur to me that I have been attending school for 17 years. Seventeen years of being an over-achiever who pushed [myself] to excel and receive the best grades possible. Thinking about adding another two years to that made my brain want to implode. I would love to attend grad school but I just don't think I can mentally do it anymore. I'm ready to end this ‘school’ chapter of my life and start a fresh, new one. Maybe this will change in the near future but as of now, I'm very content with not attending.”

While it is important to always keep your options open, it’s essential to do what makes you happy!

Now that you’ve decided to hold off on more schooling, you need to determine what you are going to do instead. “You can delay grad school and work for a few years to confirm your commitment to your field of study,” says Mitler. “This may enable you to save some money while getting real world professional experience. This work experience might be advantageous when finishing graduate school in helping you [to] get a post-graduate job.”

So polish up your resume, and start applying for jobs and internships. Utilize your alma mater—every school has a number of resources available for graduates looking for their first job out of college.

Mitler recommends using social media, specifically LinkedIn and Instagram, as a resource to “identify, research and learn about corporate culture and current job opportunities.” She also suggests browsing company websites, which “allow you to research background information on lines of business, read recent press and learn about specific internship and graduate programs for college and graduate students.”

Amber Layfield, a senior at Appalachian State, says that she was completely set on going to grad school right after she finished undergrad. “I had spreadsheets with school names, programs I was interested in, the application due date, everything you could think of,” says Amber. “I was studying for the GRE last summer, but before I knew it the fall semester had started and I was swept up in school, work and my organizations. I was exhausted…so I talked to my mentor and decided taking a year or two off before going back to school would be good for me. I wanted to get some experience in my field and in life too, and so far it's working out well. I'm searching for a job or a paid internship, but I know this was the right choice for me!”

If you don’t want to jump into the workforce right away, consider spending time abroad, enrolling in a service learning program like AmeriCorps or City Year, or applying for The Disney College Program. Change is inevitable; it’s all about how you handle it.

What to do if you’ve decided against the program or college you’re currently in

If you are unhappy in your program or your choice of school in general, consider whether you would still like to attend grad school. You may not want to give up on the degree altogether; maybe you just need to make some changes.

“After starting grad school, some people come to the realization that either the career path or academia is not the right choice,” says Mitler. “It is best to leave as soon as you are no longer committed to that career or to continuing in school.”

Sydnee Lyons, a first year grad student at Florida Atlantic University, is having doubts about completing her program. “As the first year of my program comes to a close, I've noticed myself slipping back to how I'm used to being in school—demanding too much of myself and thinking about school every second of every day,” says Sydnee. “Of course, I want the credentials and the knowledge, but it feels as though it comes at the price of my peace of mind. I just think that, beyond a certain age, school shouldn't be anyone's biggest worry in life. And if it is, like it is for me, then grad school may not be the best choice.”

Take the time to sit down and talk with your advisor, a teacher, mentor, or even a trusted friend or family member. They can assist you in weighing your options and provide information that will help you find a better fit. Mitler suggests contacting the director of admissions as soon as possible if you are having second thoughts. “This dialogue may help you to get more clarity on your decision to determine if you are right to question and change your mind,” she says. If you’re still unsure, try re-researching the program or reaching out to past graduates to find out where they are now. Also, be sure to research career fields that are available to you if you do decide to drop out.

There are other options when it comes to graduate school. For instance, if the cost of grad school is one of your concerns, Mitler recommends enrolling in online courses or online degree programs. “This enables you to obtain a degree without accumulating all the debt of a full time graduate school program,” she says. “Another option is to work for a company that after a few years of employment partially or fully funds graduate school on a part-time basis, post-work hours.”

Whatever you decide, just know that giving up grad school isn’t quitting. You’re simply starting a new chapter of your life—so make the best of it! Don’t get discouraged; always keep moving forward. Set new goals, and go after them. You’ll be killing it in the real world in no time!
