I Tried Going Out Without My Phone & Here's What Happened

0
0

We live in a world where we are constantly connected. Our phones have become a part of our everyday life. They are our lifelines, assisting us in the simplest of tasks, such as what the weather is going to be or directions to the nearest Starbucks. We have become dependent on our phones, perhaps a little too dependent.

I’m always connected to my phone. Whether it’s getting texts from friends or notifications when my favorite celebrities tweet, I am always in the know when it comes to what is going on in the world. I have never been without my phone, except for going to sleep away camp, when I had absolutely no say in the matter.

So what if I purposely didn’t carry my phone with me. What would it be like to go out in the world for a few hours not always knowing what’s going on, or not having contact with everyone I know with a simple touch?

I talked a lot about leaving my phone at home with many of my friends and family members. A majority of their reactions were that there was no way they could do it. One of my roommates even joked that I should just lie about the entire experiment.

The idea of going into the world without your phone seemed crazy and unthinkable to most, even those who grew up without having a phone on them constantly. Yet, despite the shocking reactions, I was I set to go about my day not having my safety net and it was harder than I thought. A few hours without my phone? Easy. Or so I thought.

RELATED: 13 Things You Won't Get Away with After College

The first time I attempted to leave my phone at my dorm, I went about getting ready like normal. Then the time came, I had to leave for classes, and I had to leave my phone in my room. I really wanted to do it, I really tried to leave my phone, but I couldn’t. The thought of doing so left me with a nervous feeling in my stomach and a mild sense of panic, my throat felt funny.

My mind went into “worst case scenario” mode; I had fears that family emergencies would happen or suddenly the world would be coming to an end and I would need to contact someone for help. Not having my phone, not being connected at all times with everyone I know and with the world itself, suddenly became my biggest fear. Something awful happening and me not being able to know about it or to call for help, was enough to make me run for the hills.

At the last minute, I ran back to my room and grabbed my phone. The relief I had from having my phone in my hands showed me that I had a bigger problem. One shouldn’t be this worried about being a few hours without their phone, no one should go into “fight or flight” from something so seemingly insignificant. It was a chance to be truly alone, and I think that I may have forgotten how to act like that.

A day later, I decided to ease my way into leaving my phone at home. Twenty minutes out to get food would be manageable, just to feel the waters of being without my cellular friend. I debated whether to tell my roommate that I would be gone, but I decided to just head out, since I didn’t plan on being out of long.

I walked out my dorm and to the bus stop, feeling giddy as the familiar bulge in my pocket wasn’t there. I noticed quickly though, that even after only being out for the first five minutes, I was bored. My hands would fidget from time to time, as if they had no idea what to do with themselves. I felt that the bus was taking forever, when it actuality I waited less than three minutes for the bus to come up. Time seemed to move slower when I had nothing to occupy myself with.

Finally, I decided to take the plunge, actually going out without my phone. I almost sent out a mass text to everyone I know saying something along the lines of “won’t have my phone for a few hours, refrain from texting”, but refrained from doing so. Instead, I left my boyfriend’s phone number for my parents, just in case they needed me. I was with a few friends, and I would be going to the movies, so surely I could be away from my phone.

RELATED: Saying Goodbye to Busy

But even while I was preoccupying myself with the movie, in the back of my mind I was thinking when exactly I would be back to my phone. I was practically counting down the minutes. Would I be missing important worldly news, texts from my friends with important life decisions they were making? I still found myself not knowing what to do with my hands when there was a pause. And at points, watching everyone else use their phones made me tempted to ask to borrow theirs, just for one minute so I could live tweet my reactions to the movie, something that I thought I couldn’t live without doing, but obviously can.

I survived though. And when I did get my phone back, I had missed noting. The world was the same; I didn’t miss any celebrity Twitter battles. And even if I had, it would have been fine. We often ask ourselves the question if we are addicted to our smart phones, and the obvious answer now would be yes.

We have forgotten how to manage without them, and how to truly be alone — not connected to the world or anyone else. Did this make me want to get rid of my phone forever? Definitely not, but it does make me want to take a few hours out of my day to turn the phone off, hide it away, and remember to be alone with myself  — something that we all could, and should, to do from time to time.

ASOS Declared Micro Braids a 'Thing'—Here's Why That's a Huge Problem

0
0

With all the recent discussion surrounding cultural appropriation in fashion, you’d think brands and designers would be extra careful to avoid it—unfortunately, not all of them have gotten the message.

British fast-fashion retailer ASOS made a major faux pas last Wednesday when it tweeted out an image of Cara Delevingne wearing a tiny, single cornrow in her hair, saying, “Thanks to @Caradelevingne micro braids are a thing. Here’s how to work ‘em.”

Normally this would be all fine and dandy—Cara is known to be a major trendsetter, after all—except that Cara didn’t start this “trend” at all. As Racked has pointed out, Cara’s braid isn’t a micro braid at all. True micro braids actually involve wearing your entire head of hair in teeny, tight braids.  Not only that, but actual micro braids have been worn for years by the likes of Beyoncé and Alicia Keys. (Oh, and they’ve been rocking the look for years.)

Unfortunately, it’s one of many instances lately of white celebrities getting credit for “starting a trend” that appropriates black culture. Luckily, Twitter immediately saw the problem here and responded to ASOS, setting them straight.

After the backlash, ASOS has since deleted the tweet, and responded to many of its upset followers, apologizing for their mistake.

While the tweet was an unfortunate misstep on ASOS’s part, we just hope the brand can turn this into a learning experience – a culture doesn’t become a “trend” when someone outside of that culture wears it.

4 Benefits Of Entering College With an Undeclared Major

0

While preparing for your freshman year, you may feel pressured to pick a field of study and stick with it for the next four years – but you shouldn’t. Unless you’re absolutely set on a specific major, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being undeclared when you enter college. In fact, doing so will allow you to experience a variety of different subjects, which will eventually help you narrow down your interests. Still nervous? Read below for 4 benefits of being undeclared:

1. You’ll get time to explore different subjects

It’s common knowledge that what you study in college is supposed to prepare you for a career in that field after graduation. The problem with this is that many students entering college aren’t yet sure what they want to spend the rest of their lives doing––which is super understandable!

Kristan Venegas, a Research Associate in the Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis at Rossier, says that students who don’t know what they want to study can benefit from an undeclared major because then they can take general courses to see what they like.

Natalie Kelly, a senior at Santa Clary University, did just this. “I went into my freshman year undeclared, and I couldn’t have been happier with my decision,” Kelly says. “I knew I was unsure what I wanted to study, so I was able to test out my likes and dislikes. While still taking courses that fulfilled general requirements, I got to try things out that I was interested in.” You’ll be getting gen-eds out of the way all the while testing the waters to see what you’ll like!

2. You can confirm your original interests

While some students have absolutely no idea what they want to study, there are also those who have some idea, but aren’t ready to officially declare a major. In fact, nearly 50 percent of entering college students are undecided about their major. To avoid wanting to switch majors later on in your college career, go in undeclared and start by taking introductory courses in the subject of your interest.

Katie Jordan, a senior at Bentley University, says she went into her freshman year undeclared, even though she had an idea of what she wanted to do in the long run. “I was in the situation where I didn’t know what I wanted to do until I experienced it in the classes that I loved,” she says. Taking classes and talking to professors in the department is a great way to learn if you’re going to like something!

Related: 4 Myths About Your Major You Shouldn’t Believe

3. You can get additional advising once you get to campus

According to Venegas, a lot of colleges offer additional advising for undeclared students. “Depending on the campus, schools will provide resources specifically for those who are undeclared, like exploring different major tracks, allowing students to speak with different students and professors from a variety of majors and different types of career testing,” she says.

If your school’s advising department doesn’t have specialized advising, Venegas says you should visit the career center. “I strongly recommend students go to their school’s career center to see what free testing is available.” Even if you have declared a major, you can still take tests to narrow down a specific area within your major! These are oftentimes similar to personality tests, asking questions about what you enjoy and look for in your day-to-day-life.

4. You’ll avoid wasting time and money

A good amount, anywhere from 50 to 70 percent, of students who declare majors early on will likely switch at least once before graduating. There’s nothing particularly wrong with this, but Venegas says that there will likely be a price to pay in order to do so. “Especially if you go from a major that’s completely different than your new one, you’ll end up paying more tuition since you’ll most likely have to start over,” she says. Additionally, it’ll take you longer to graduate, which can be a problem with certain scholarships that only last a certain amount of time.

By entering college undeclared, you can begin with general courses rather than major-specific ones – therefore preventing these issues. “I entered college undeclared,” Alaina Leary, a graduate student at Emerson College says. “It allowed me to take the time to decide what I really wanted. Obviously, changing majors is possible as well, but I didn’t want to have to go through that process.” You could end up saving time and money!

Instead of stressing and choosing a major that you think you’ll like, take the time to try out a variety of subjects. You may be surprised with what you enjoy! There’s no reason to fear going into college with an undeclared major, especially if it feels right for you.

Finals week is tough enough as it is, but there’s always that one person who has to rub in your face how perfect she is at it all. She’s there to denounce your procrastination and offer you completely unhelpful tidbits of advice, no matter how miserable you are. Below are the 16 things that no one should ever say to a collegiette during finals. Period.

1. "Why didn’t you start that project earlier?"

2. "Is that what you’re wearing?"

3. "When are you going to start studying?"

4. "Maybe you should boycott Netflix until finals are over."

5. "Are you sure you haven't had too much coffee?"

6. "I don’t think eating a whole jar of Nutella counts as having dinner."

7. "You should probably get some sleep."

8. "If you had better grades throughout the semester, you wouldn’t have to calculate the lowest grade you can make on the final to still pass the class."

9. "Why not take a shower? It will make you feel better."

10. "Alcohol might not be the best choice right now."

11. "Facebook is just a distraction."

12. "How are you feeling about that big test?"

13. "Do you think your sudden interest in laundry might have anything to do with your desire to avoid studying?"

14. "You know your professor is not out to get you, right?"

15. "Why did you sell back your textbooks before you finished studying?"

16. "What classes are you taking next semester?"

Like, all I want to think about right now is break. Let's focus on that, thanks!

Donald Trump Wants to Win the Election So That Lena Dunham Will Leave the Country

Recently, Girls star Lena Dunham said that she would move out of the country if Donald Trump was elected. The Hilary Clinton supporter continued: "I know a lot of people have been threatening to do this, but I really will. I know a lovely place in Vancouver, and I can get my work done from there."

In a call with Fox & Friends, Trump reacted by saying, "She’s a B actor and has no mojo." He continued to ridicule other celebrities (yep, all female): “I heard Whoopi Goldberg said that too. That would be a great, great thing for our country if she got out." Next, he insulted Rosie O'Donell: "We’ll get rid of Rosie? Oh, I love it. Now I have to get elected because I’ll be doing a great service to our country. I have to. Now it’s much more important." He finished by saying, "In fact, I’ll immediately get off this call and start campaigning right now.”

Trump, you always have something to say, don't you?

James Corden Parodies 'Lemonade' & It's Amazing

James Corden is easily one of the funniest and most innovative late night show hosts out there. Have you SEEN his Carpool Karaoke videos? It's safe to say that he's provided hours of laughter and entertainment. However, James' latest parody video takes him to another level. Rather than start his show with a typical monologue, James channeled his inner Beyoncé for a Lemonade-inspired parody.

In a very Beyoncé-esque manner, James recreated some of the most memorable shots from the visual album, from Bey sitting in her bathtub contemplating life, to her destruction of an old TV with a baseball bat. Throughout the visual monologue, appropriately titled "Lemonjames," James tackles current topics—including Trump jokes, new studies, and feeling hangry. "This is in the news, that's in the news, what else is in the news?" James asks viewers. "You guys see this? Do you guys see—me?"

In the monologue, James appears in a variety of different costumes, from the black bra and underwear set to the yellow dress and wavy, blonde wig. And of course he couldn't go through the monologue without dropping his own variation on the famous "Becky with the good hair" lyric.

"A new ice cream shop opened at a former Massachusetts funeral home," Corden says. "They're calling it, 'Casket Robins.' Did that make you laugh, baby? That's one of my own. Does that make you laugh, like Jimmy with the good hair?"

Basically, this parody is equal parts amazing and entertaining, and you should probably check it out ASAP.

Amy Schumer is Lit (Literally) in Her 'Vanity Fair' Shoot

Amy Schumer isn’t your typical actress. She’s funny and brash in an industry that prizes poise and elegance. It only seems fit that her Vanity Fair cover shoot would be anything but typical.

In the photograph that’s causing the most sparks, Schumer poses a cheeky tee, with fire in lieu of underwear. Within the cover story, the magazine’s fashion and style director Jessica Diehl described the look as being classic Amy Schumer rather than classic Hollywood.

“The whole attitude, the T-shirt, the slogan on the T-shirt—it just felt very real, with everything else being so surreal,” Diehl says.

Amy Schumer was pretty pleased with photographer Annie Leibovitz’s shoot, too. Everything was her idea, from the flames to the “No Coffee, No Workee” shirt, which she brought from home.

“I begged Annie to photograph me with no underwear on in just a T-shirt,” Schumer says. “I explained to her how important it was to me and she finally agreed.”

She further explained that the unorthodox glamour shoot made her feel powerful and beautiful—Schumer called the shoot one of the most meaningful moments in her life.

The rest of the shoot is a quirky collage of everything that makes the actress and writer who she is. She puckers her lips in an outfit that a classic Hollywood “blonde bombshell” might wear... while riding an actual bombshell. She poses with her sister and co-writer Kim Caramele in the middle of a mad writing session.

The cover returns Schumer to that classic Hollywood mockery with a sassy Betty Boop-inspired pose. Both the background and Schumer’s outfit are a deep, powerful red.

“There had to be some sense of humor in the glamorizing, because [the glamorizing] is not the point of her,” Diehl says. “The point of her is not to be a red-carpet star—she does so much more than dress up for premieres or press circuits.”

Lena Dunham Really, REALLY Wouldn't Want To Be A Man

Lena Dunham is proud af to be a woman, and she's not afraid to show it. At the New York Women in Communications annual awards luncheon, someone asked Dunham what she'd do if she woke up as a man during a game of "Plead the Fifth."

“Kill myself,” she replied bluntly.

Dunham, however, wasn’t being completely serious.

“The reason I said that wasn’t because I’m subscribing to an old binary,” she explained. “I love that fact that we’re in a time where we get to determine what gender looks and feels like to us. It was not because I wouldn’t know what to wear. It was because I feel so passionately lucky to be doing the work of being female right now.”

Dunham speaks from a place of true pride in her gender. She is outspoken about women’s rights, specifically reproductive health and issues in the workplace. She wants to be—and, undeniably, is—a voice for change.

“I feel [progress] happening every day, and it gets me fired up,” she says. “It’s what makes me want to wake up in the morning. It’s what makes me want to live a really long time. It’s what makes me eat well. It’s what makes me do yoga.”

Dunham finished her acceptance speech with an anecdote from her college days: She looked in the mirror one day and realized that she was connected to all women, past and present. All women are in it together.

Lena Dunham wouldn’t change that for anything.

This Woman Recreated Kendall Jenner's Calvin Klein Ads to Show Off Her Stretch Marks

We're so glad that the body positivity movement is growing. There's still more to be done, but women like Brenda DeRouen are proving that everyday people can push the movement forward.

DeRouen lives in Texas with her 8-year-old son, and she's felt self-conscious about her stretch marks since her pregnancy. She wrote on her blog, “I turned away when dressing in front of others, and wouldn’t chance doing the dirty with the lights on… For years I dealt with not loving myself. I was self-conscious in relationships and I hated how my body looked.” We can all relate to that feeling of self-consciousness, but DeRouen offers some encouragement: "I guarantee you there is something that you are struggling with. Whether it’s your weight, your hair, or your breast size. Just know that there is no such thing as a perfect body. Most pictures that you see nowadays are Photoshopped and edited anyway. You are beautiful."

To help herself cope with her self image, DeRouen decided to do a photo shoot that featured her stretch marks prominently. Deun Ivory, her photographer, took photos of DeRouen in Calvin Klein underwear. Her photos put an inspirational spin on Kendall Jenner's Calvin Klein ads. By being fearless and showing off her body, DeRouen helped herself break out of her insecurity.

We can all learn from DeRouen's bold decision to show off her body, no matter what. We've all experienced insecurity, but we don't have to let it hold us back!

Beyoncé's Father Responds to 'Lemonade' Abuse Allegations

The internet has been exploding for days with speculation about Jay Z’s supposed infidelity, but he’s not the only man Beyoncé alludes to in Lemonade. Many of the tracks reference Beyoncé’s father, Mathew Knowles, and most shockingly also hint at infidelity and abuse. It seems the men in Bey’s life need to step it up!

“Did he convince you he was a god? Did you get on your knees daily? Do his eyes close like doors? Are you a slave to the back of his hand? Am I talking about your husband or your father?” Beyoncé recites in the spoken word portion—written by poet Warsan Shire—before “Daddy Lessons.” That’s some pretty serious stuff there that definitely implies abuse, but Mathew Knowles is passionately arguing that the lyrics are not about him.

“I can say I have never in my life hit my daughter. So she has never been a slave to the back of my hand because I didn't believe in that," Knowles said in an interview with Sirius XM's Mark Thompson. Thompson rebutted that the lyrics may imply someone was hitting Beyoncé’s mother, but Knowles stayed firm. “Well, there’s no way that we can get into the mind of Beyoncé. Only Beyoncé can answer who specifically she was talking to,” he said.

Knowles spent the rest of the interview praising his daughter for her creative work on Lemonade, reiterating how proud he is of Beyoncé and what she’s accomplished. So for now, there you have it folks.

And if you’re wondering whether or not he has some idea who the album is about and who “Becky with the good hair” is, it’s a mystery to him, too.

Here’s What Happened At Tuesday's Northeast Primaries

0
0

Super Tuesday No. 4 came to a close after Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island voted on presidential nominees. As the results came rolling in from the East Coast, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump just kept on winning. If you missed the action, excitement, and Trump’s super sexist victory speech, here’s the recap of Super Tuesday:

Donald Trump is Closer than Ever to Victory

Donald rolled through Super Tuesday, sweeping all five of the states’ primaries. This put Trump at 953 delegates—which means he needs fewer than 300 more to reach the necessary 1,237 delegates and clinch the Republican nomination before the convention this summer.

“When the boxer knocks out the other boxer, you don’t have to wait around for a decision,” Trump said to supporters in Trump Tower, according to The New York Times. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s over.”

After claiming he pretty much already beat everyone, Trump set his sights on Clinton and the national election. Trump, in his victory, branded Clinton as an easy opponent, or at least easier than past ones like Jeb Bush. According to CNN, Trump said, “Frankly, if Hillary Clinton was a man, she’d only get 5 percent of the vote…The only thing she’s go going for her is the woman’s card, and frankly, women don’t like her.” Even Mary Pat Christie, the wife of Chris Christie and a pledged supporter of Trump, rolled her eyes at him.

Hillary Sweeps 4 of the 5 States

Winning all but Rhode Island, Hillary moved her delegate count up to 1,666 (not including super delegates). With her 502 superdelegates (who may change their support at any time), Clinton is nearly 200 delegates from clinching the nomination.

“I applaud Senator Sanders and his millions of supporters for challenging us to get accountable money out of politics and putting greater emphasis to closing the gap of inequality,” Clinton said, according to CNN. “And I know together we will get that done.” This could be a possible call to Sanders to unite if he does not get the nomination, in order to fix splits in the party and beat Trump.

Clinton is looking ahead to the fall and the national election, assured that she will arrive to the Democratic convention this summer “with the most votes and the most pledged delegates.”

Only Rhode Island Felt “The Bern”

Although Sanders only trails Clinton 1,359 to 1,666 pledged delegates, he only has 42 superdelegates. This could be the main difference keeping Bernie from being the Democratic nominee. After losing four of the five states that voted Tuesday night, he turned his attention on the superdelegates.

“What we are seeing are national polls which have us 15 or 20 points ahead of Donald Trump—far more than Secretary Clinton,” Sanders said, according to CNN. He is trying to change the support of the superdelegates, pitching himself as the best candidate to beat out Trump come November.

CNN also reported that six in 10 Democratic voters in Maryland and Connecticut see Sanders campaign as energizing, rather than dividing, to the Democratic party. This may help Sanders “fight for a progressive party platform” in the convention in the summer, even if he can’t clinch the nomination.

Ted Cruz and John Kasich Team Up

Put together, Kasich and Cruz only won 6 assigned delegates on Tuesday night out of 118 up for grabs. The two have declared that they will team up to keep as many future contests away from the Donald as possible. According to the Los Angeles Times, this means that Cruz will back out of Oregon and New Mexico to give Kasich a better chance of winning, while Kasich will do the same for Cruz in Indiana.

“Tonight this campaign moves back to more favorable terrain,” said Cruz in Indiana, where the next major primaries will be held. This move shows how, even with split ideas on the issues, much of the Republican party is willing to do anything to keep Trump from getting the nomination before the GOP convention.

According to CNBC, Ted Cruz also plans on making a “major announcement” at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Many believe that he could be naming a vice presidential running mate (perhaps Carly Fiorina?), in order to broaden his campaign and pick up more supporters.

Indiana’s primary, which will happen next Tuesday (yay for political Tuesdays!), is the next voting. If Trump wins, his nomination will become even more likely. Stay tuned to see if the Kasich and Cruz teamwork pays off and if Sanders can fare any better outside of the East Coast.

Kesha Is Back in the Recording Studio

It looks like Kesha is back on her feet following her painful and very public legal battle with Dr. Luke and Sony.

After a powerful performance with Zedd at Coachella, Kesha hit the recording studio with the musician and producer. Now, she's thanking Zedd for his support in a sweet Instagram post. She captioned the snap, "it's a miracle when someone gives you the chance at finding your voice again."

Zedd offered to help Kesha produce her music back in February. It looks like the two are now in the process of recording "True Colors," which they performed together at Coachella. The tune already appeared on Zedd's 2015 album, so it's unclear what the duo plans to do with this new recording.

This Model Doesn't Believe Kendall Jenner & Gigi Hadid Are 'True Supermodels'

Former model Rebecca Romijn had a lot to say about Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight. Romijn asserted that she, as well as many others in the fashion world, don’t necessarily believe that Jenner and Hadid earned their places at the top of the modeling world. She explains that it has become a trend to hire girls for their popularity on social media above all else. "It is frustrating. I know a lot of people—legitimate fashion people—can’t stand it." Without ratting anyone out, she revealed that they "hate it that these, you know, social media stars are now the supermodels in fashion. They are not true supermodels."

She also shed some light on the loss of individuality in many high fashion magazines, specifically Vogue. Romijn is especially disappointed that they seem to be following the trend of hiring social media stars. "I have always looked to Vogue magazine to lead the way, not be a follower. I rely on Vogue to set the standard, not follow what everybody else is doing."

After her comments circulated the internet earlier today, Romijn released this statement via Twitter:

While we do believe the media often misconstrues what celebs say in interviews, Romijn's quotes seem pretty straightforward. As we've seen a million times before, though, we'll likely never know the whole story behind this one.

This Video of Men Reading Terrible Tweets to Female Sports Writers Will Shock You

One trend online and on talk shows has been reading of mean tweets. Celebrities and sports players have read “mean Tweets” on the Jimmy Kimmel show for ages. But they’re not the only people that have to deal with online harassment. Female sports writers receive terrible, violent social media messages daily—just for doing their jobs.

Two women that have been on the receiving end of Twitter’s darker side are Sarah Spain and Julie DiCaro. According to Esquire, Sarah Spain is a sports columnist, radio host and reporter for ESPN. Julie DiCaro is a radio anchor is Chicago and a Sports Illustrated writer. These are their jobs. These are their passions. Yet, Twitter is filled with sexist and hate-filled responses over the fact that these women are covering sports. To show that these Tweets are not “just mean,” but straight-up wrong, Just Not Sports brought in real men to read these very real tweets.

This was a part of Just Not Sports’ #MoreThanMean campaign. And it was straight-up painful to watch. “I’m having trouble looking at you when I’m saying these things,” one of the men said.

“I hope you get raped again,” said one especially horrible Tweet directed to DiCaro. The man reading it looked up after and all he could say was, “I’m sorry.” Even though those weren’t his words, he still felt the need to say sorry just reading the tweet out loud.

One of the other men said, “I’m sorry on behalf of other people everywhere that you’ve had to deal with this.”

“We wouldn’t say it to their faces, so let’s not type it,” the video reads, signing off of the video. Just Not Sports encouraged readers to share the video with the hashtag #JustNotMean to raise awareness about online harassment of female sports writers. These are things people should never say to others, especially not in person. Saying them online under the guise of anonymity doesn't make them okay, either.

Nicki Minaj Weirdly Dedicates 'Anaconda' to Donald Trump & Joe Biden

Nicki Minaj closed out the Time 100 Gala last night but gave out a really weeeeird dedication before performing the ever-amazing "Anaconda." Actually, weird doesn’t even begin to cover it, since she dedicated the song to Joe Biden and Donald (freaking) Trump.

Say what?

"I'm very political, and I would like to dedicate a song, just in the spirit of unity, to Joe Biden and Donald Trump," she announced, and then altered her own song lyrics to include Trump’s name in the first verse and Biden’s in the second. That’s definitely not what we expected to happen, but it’s Nicki Minaj, so maybe we should reconsider our feelings toward the 2016 presidential candidate.

"Do you think they like that song?" Minaj asked after "Anaconda" ended. Of course, that wasn’t the only question on her mind.

"Who do you think likes the biggest butts, Donald Trump or Joe Biden?" she laughed. Personally, we’d put all our money on Trump but who really knows.

More and More Teenage Girls Want to Get Plastic Surgery on Their Genitals

It’s normal for young girls to dislike parts of their body, and to say they want to change how they look. But according to The New York Times, there is one more part of the body that girls are now disliking more and more—the vulva.

According to data from The American Society For Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 400 girls ages 18 and younger had labiaplasty, or surgery on the labia, last year. The year before that it was only 222 girls who had the cosmetic genital surgery. Because more and more teen girls are seeking this surgery to “trim or shape the external genitalia,” according to the Times, the Committee on Adolescent Health Care issued a note to doctors urging them to tell their patients the risk associated with the surgery and to suggest alternatives.

Doctors and researchers are unsure as to why there has been an increase in young women wanting this surgery, as it's usually geared toward much older women, the Times reports. But now that it's so common to wax or shave pubic hair, many girls are getting rid of hair only to realize they don't like what's underneath—or that it doesn't match what they've seen in pictures of what a vulva is 'supposed' to look like.

For some teenagers, the surgery is necessary because the labia is causing pain or discomfort. But for women who just don't like the way their labia look, doctors stress that it's important to realize that there's a ton of variation in people's bodies (duh!) and your genitals are probably absolutely fine the way they are.

Mattel's Super Hero Toys For Girls Are Actually Kicking Butt

The toy industry has never been perfect for girls, and especially not when it came to super heroes. But as of recently, things are starting to look up, especially for Mattel. DC Super Hero Girls, the new toy line from Mattel, has sold extremely well so far, according to Quartz.

Quartz reports that although the toys only began to sell in March at Target, Mattel’s president, Richard Dickson, is hopeful that they will do very well considering Mattel’s history with girl-directed toys. Earlier this year, Mattel lost the rights to sell Disney princess dolls—a huge financial loss. But now, the company is hoping to trigger investments because of how well these action figures are doing.

The company and Target are even going as far to say that these are “the first-ever action role-play toys for girls.” That’s a pretty big statement.

Fingers crossed that these toys inspire young girls to go out and kick some butt!

Azealia Banks Criticizes Beyoncé For Being Anti-Feminist

In spite of Azealia Banks’s original support of Beyoncé’s new album, she is now voicing some markedly different opinions on Twitter. Lemonade was released over the weekend, and while the visual album has caused quite a bit of controversy in the short time since it premiered on HBO, this is a whole new level of cray. Aside from accusing Bey of stealing things from Banks’s own tour, Azealia also asserts that the album promotes ideas that are “the antithesis of what feminism is.”

Below are just a few excerpts from Banks's long and very confusing Twitter rant:

While Banks is certainly entitled to a change of heart, she definitely has some explaining to do when it comes to these accusations. Perhaps, this all has something to do with the fact that Azealia released a new song of her own yesterday. Regardless, the Beyhive is on it.

Ted Cruz Chooses Carly Fiorina as His Running Mate

After losing all five states that had primaries yesterday to Donald Trump, Ted Cruz announced Wednesday afternoon that he has chosen Carly Fiorina to be the Vice Presidential candidate if Cruz wins the Republican nomination.

"Carly respects the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and she understands the threats facing America; she understands this is a dangerous world," Cruz said in an announcement speech. "She is someone you can be confident in."

While it may not seem like Cruz could gain much from pairing up with Fiorina, the value of having her as his running mate could be in provoking sexism from Trump, according to The New York Times. The Republican front runner, who currently has 953 delegates while Cruz only has 546, has already insulted Fiorina several times in the past, making references to her looks in particular. Those kinds of comments could seriously hurt him when it comes to winning over Republican women voters.

This is the second alliance Cruz has made with other presidential hopefuls in the last few days—He recently made an agreement with John Kasich to split up the remaining primary states, in an attempt to stop Trump from getting enough delegates to win the nomination outright.

But even if this is an uphill battle, Fiorina seems to be looking forward to it.

"Ted could not be more right in what he said: There is a lot at stake, and in fact, this is a fight, this is a fight for the soul of our party and the future of our nation," Fiorina said, according to CNN. "I've had tough fights all my life. Tough fights don't worry me a bit."
