36 Reasons to Celebrate Being Single on Valentine’s Day

$

0

This time of year, it seems that love is in the air…just not the air that you’re breathing. Before you go hunting for whatever love potion your peers seem to have gotten their hands on this Valentine’s Day, take a moment to stop, reflect and relish the fact that you won’t be spending your afternoon cutting out paper hearts (hello, carpal tunnel) or worrying about lipstick smudges (because nothing says, “Kiss me” like rouge-stained teeth, right?). Not convinced that you’re better off? These reasons to celebrate the single life on V-Day just might change your mind:

1. You don’t have to worry about braving that blizzard to go shopping for a special V-Day date outfit.

2. The aforementioned V-Day date outfit would likely cost as much as a few days’ worth of food, and you’re on a college budget. Plus, you’re hungry.

3. You’ll convince yourself in the dressing room that you’ll wear said V-Day date outfit more than once, but let’s be real: Where are you going to wear that sparkly red cocktail dress? Class? What is this, Pretty Little Liars?

4. Ryan Gosling has been in over 20 movies and you want to watch them all, which takes time, undivided attention and a large, tree house-style “No Boys Allowed” sign posted on your door to repel the non-believers.

5. Those heart-shaped candy boxes never hold as much chocolate as they seem to in the store, and you hate that awkward moment when you realize that there just aren’t enough to share. Not enough good ones, at least, which is basically the same thing.

6. Because you aren’t a sharer, period.

7. You can buy yourself roses at the florist and they won’t be any less special than that bouquet your roommate’s boyfriend bought her. It’s not like he picked them himself…

8. Pink just isn’t your color and, therefore, Valentine’s Day just isn’t your holiday.

9. Your best friend is panicking about what kind of present she should buy for her hook-up buddy, and you rejoice at the fact that you aren’t in her shoes. She doesn’t even know if she’s in a relationship, let alone if her boy-toy likes crewnecks.

10. Unfortunately, your best friend is wrong: her boy-toy doesn’t like crewnecks.

11. Taylor Swift's “Blank Space” is a freaking anthem. Sing it loud and proud.

12. You’re still exhausted from your last relationship and you just want to do you.

13. You missed last week’s episode of Girls and you finally have some time to yourself to watch it, or more accurately, some time to audibly point out all of the ideas that Lena Dunham stole from your own personal life (without anyone questioning your choices).

14. It’s a fine day for a fro-yo and a shopping spree. #treatyourself

15. The movie Valentine’s Day exists and was designed to make awkward V-Day alone time not awkward.

16. While watching Valentine’s Day, you get to enjoy your favorite flavors of man candy: Bradley Cooper, Eric Dane, Jamie Foxx, Patrick Dempsey, Topher Grace, Taylor Lautner and Ashton Kutcher.

17. Plus, that guy who plays Emma Roberts’s boyfriend who will probably be hot one day.

18. You also happen to have girl-crushes on Emma Roberts, Jessica Biel, Julia Roberts, Jessica Alba, Queen Latifah, Taylor Swift, Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Garner, to name a few.

19. You have the freedom to watch the Taylor Swift/Taylor Lautner scenes on repeat in the hopes of pinpointing the moment they fell in love (others aren’t quite so jazzed by the idea). You still believe they belong together, TBH.

20. Valentine’s Day is infinitely better than New Year’s Eve, so this will be a vast improvement on your last movie night. Seriously, what were they thinking?

21. You still have blisters on your feet from those fabulous heels you wore last weekend (ahem, last night), and instead of wedging your toes into yet another death trap, you fully intend to give them some TLC by staying in and snuggling them up in some slippers.

22. Your friend is giving her boyfriend a well thought-out mix tape and he isn’t giving her anything. “Oh, it’s Valentine’s Day?” you hear him say. “Oh, we’re at the gift-giving stage?” you hear him say. Facepalm.

23. You got 99 problems, but a frat bro ain’t one.

24. You have your eyes on that guy from sociology, and rumor has it he’s recently single.

25. You spotted said guy from sociology hanging out in the Student Union (since he also doesn’t have Valentine’s Day plans) and you’re already halfway through plotting your “chance encounter,” complete with flawless hair flip. It’s only stalking if you followed him there, right?

26. You’re certain that one day, Rob Reiner will use this “chance encounter” as the meet cute when he makes a blockbuster about your epic romance. You’re hoping this will lead to Twilight-franchise-style action figures.

27. “I hate chocolate,” said no one ever. Except your ex, last Valentine’s Day. #freeatlast

28. You know who else is celebrating the single life this V-Day? Taylor Swift. You’re no less lucky in love than even the most successful of women.

29. Your parents will be overjoyed when you tell them that you finally have free time to Skype them since your friends are out on dates. Suddenly you’ve regained your rightful status as the favorite child.

30. When you first turn on Skype and your dad barely recognizes you, you realize you probably should have done this weeks ago.

31. When you think back to Valentine’s Days past – several of which featured red- and pink-colored braces – you remember how lucky you are to be a beautiful collegiette with an entire campus full of single undergrads at your disposal. And more importantly, that you no longer have braces.

32. Because “serial dater” isn’t nearly so awful as “serial killer,” but you still don’t like the sound of it…especially when it’s used to describe you. Time for a break?

33. You aren’t a fan of heart-shaped goodies. It’s a cookie. It should be shaped like one.

34. The V-Day party will be filled with other singles, and you’re like a kid in a candy store.

35. You’re reading Romeo and Juliet in your Shakespeare class and that stuff is straight up depressing. You’re not really in the mood to be a star-crossed lover anytime soon. Please and thank you.

36. Because you aren’t the only single one out there. You just happen to be the best. Expect boys to be beating down your door by sundown.

Remember, Valentine’s Day isn’t just for the sweethearts of the world (though it’s probably nice for them, too). So put on “Single Ladies,” turn up your speaker, and get your celebratory, single-gal V-Day started right.

9 'Bachelor' Moments More Cringeworthy Than Olivia's Striptease

$

0

If you tuned in to The Bachelor this week, the moment you can’t stop talking about is likely Olivia’s awkward talent show dance routine. We can’t be the only ones who were suffering from secondhand embarrassment.

But while Olivia’s spectacle will definitely go down in Bachelor history, there were other moments in last night’s episode that were even more cringeworthy.

1. JoJo nearly dies by way of flying cocktail table

Helicopters are dreamy and all but not when they’re causing cocktail tables to fly haphazardly across a rooftop. Thankfully, JoJo was able to keep her wits about her, asking how her hair looked and subsequently making out with Ben behind the cocktail table in question.

2. Lauren H. kisses puppet, then kisses Ben

First of all, the fact that you even kissed a puppet—open mouth, might we add—in the first place is strange. But you followed it up by kissing Ben. This appalling moment brought to you by the woman who asked if she had to wear nipple tassels in the talent show.

3. Caila transforms into the “sex panther”

We thought we had that sweet princess Caila all figured out, but she was coming on strong with some steamy lip action last night. Thus, Ben coined the term “sex panther.” We’re not quite sure of the definition, but we’re guessing it’s close to: woman attempting to kiss her way out of the friend zone.

4. Becca wears the most hideous—yet most Vegas—wedding dress ever

Poor, Becca. She’s had nothing but boho chic style since we met her on Chris Soules’s season. So did she really deserve that lump of an off-the-rack wedding dress—even if she only had to wear it for a hot second?

5. Ben officiates a series of weddings for total randos in Vegas

Are we even the least bit sure that Ben was ordained to marry those unsuspecting couples? Or did Chris Harrison have to step in for legit quickie ceremonies once the cameras stopped rolling?

6. Ben makes Becca describe her virginity in detail

We must point out how positively uncomfortable Ben acts on one-on-one dates—at least during the “let’s stare at this plate of food but never eat it” portion of the evening. It’s like a police interrogation. But Detective Ben took the third degree to the next level when quizzing Becca about her virginity. Question after question kept coming, and how was she supposed to react? Dial it back, buddy.

7. Ben is forced to choose between the twins

Usually, we would argue to the death that a moment like this was producer-orchestrated. But somehow Ben’s decision to ditch one of the twins seemed very in character. Since he didn’t have the time or interest to get to know them better, he consulted the woman who knows them best when making his decision: yep, their mother! We’re not sure what was harder to watch: mom picking her favorite daughter or Ben finally deciding between Mary Kate and Ashley.

8. Olivia tells Ben she’s falling for him

Week four—it’s obviously the right time to bring those words out into the open. But her declaration wasn’t even the best part? Just the fact that Olivia thinks Ben reciprocated her feelings is enough to prove she’s officially off her rocker. Next week, we fully expect her to gift Ben with a memory jar, scrapbook or other memento documenting their relationship.

9. Amber cries on a pool lounger after being rejected—again!

Third time was so not the charm for Amber, but who thought it would be? So as not to humiliate herself any further, she curled up in a ball on a pool lounger just outside the rose ceremony to properly lament her existence.

We've Got Your First Look at the 'Friends' Reunion—Minus Chandler

Grab a seat at Central Perk, sit back and enjoy this glorious photo of (most of) the Friends cast, as the stars of the hit ‘90s show reunited on Sunday, January 24. They are pictured alongside the cast of The Big Bang Theory, and we have actor Johnny Galecki to thank for sharing this photo on his Instagram. The Friends cast came together to honor James Burrows, who directed the pilot episode and 15 episodes throughout the series' run.

And then this happened. #TBBT #friends

A photo posted by Johnny Galecki (@sanctionedjohnnygalecki) on

Besties Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox were all smiles sitting front and center of the photo, as Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc cozied up next to the Big Bang stars. We are all deeply saddened that Chanandler Bong is missing from this photo and won't be joining the Friends televised reunion due to rehearsals for an upcoming play. There are rumors that he might tape something separate from the rest of the bunch, though, so fingers crossed!

Be sure to tune into NBC for the two-hour reunion on February 21!

8 Dates to Surprise Your Girlfriend for Valentine’s Day

$

0

You and your girl are a little bored of the standard dinner at a restaurant date, and you've seen every good movie that's already out. You want to celebrate Valentine's Day somehow, but you really don't want it to be cliché. You want a date that fits your personalities, one that will really wow her this year. Never fear—there are plenty of unique and adorable options you and your girlfriend can plan for this Valentine’s Day.

1.Surprise her with a night under the stars

This may be on the colder side depending on your location, but if you grab as many blankets as possible, you can make it work. Surprise your girl with a night underneath the stars. If you're both over 21, you can bring along a nice bottle of wine or champagne to toast with.

To add even more romance to the night, you can make your girlfriend a jar filled with a year’s worth of notes. Yes, that makes 365 notes, and it will probably take hours and really provehow much you care.

Macey Lavoie, a recent graduate of Westfield State University, got one of these jars from her girlfriend last year. "It was one of the best gifts I've ever received, because it's a homemade one that lasts an entire year," she says. "It reminded me every day how much she loved me."

If you’re crafty, you can switch up the notes so that some are memories, some are coupons she can redeem, some are things you love about her, and some are memories you’d like to make in the future. It’s really only your own creativity—and patience—that limits you.

Bring the jar along with you and give it to your girl while you're cuddled up with some bubbly under the night sky.

2. Host a singles’ dinner party

Just because you and your girlfriend are committed doesn’t mean Valentine’s has to be a romantic thing. Especially if you’re both not into the holiday, and you have a lot of single friends, you could plan a party for all the single people out there as an alternative.

Last Valentine's Day, Macey and her friends hosted a singles' party on February 14th. "I've never thought of Valentine's Day as a purely couples day, because we don't usually celebrate other forms of love. It's good to shake things up and celebrate your friends, too."

All you need to host a singles party is the space, some basic snacks and beverages, and a group of your closest friends. You can rent comedies and spend the entire night laughing, or you can pull out a board game like Crabs Adjust Humidity or Pictionary.

3. Plan a photo shoot

Unless one of you happens to be a photographer, it’s probably rare to get a decent picture together. Instead of going out to dinner, use your money to hire a photographer and plan a couples’ photo shoot on location or at a studio. This way, you’ll also have lasting keepsakes to remember the day by.

You can make a photo shoot into even more fun by planning to use props. Make some DIY photo booth props and bring them along with you, or bring a bunch of confetti and glitter and throw it into the air as the photographer is snapping shots.

4. Have a romantic scavenger hunt

Surprise your sweetie by planning an elaborate scavenger hunt, especially if you make the clues based on your relationship.

You can use a scavenger hunt in a variety of ways. One way would be to plan a more elaborate hunt, where the clues physically take you to some of your favorite memories together, like the location of your first date, first kiss and where you met. Depending on location and transportation, this could be difficult, but would be a night to remember, to say the least.

The other option involves staging the scavenger hunt in a specific location, but making sure the clues mentally transport your SO back in time. Use the clues to remind her what you love about her, and to paint the picture of your favorite memories together.

A scavenger hunt requires a little forward planning, so it's not an ideal date if you're pulling this together last minute. You can have the hunt end at a specific location, such as a restaurant, to end the date with a nice meal together. Dinner won't feel cliché after you've spent the day traversing the city in search of clues.

Pro tip: You get bonus points if you're able to make your clues rhyme!

5. Take her on a picnic

This one may be a little difficult in February depending on where you live, but if the weather’s bad, you can always make it an indoor picnic.

You can plan the picnic according to your tastes. When Desiree Costa, a first year at the University of Massachusetts Law School, went on a picnic date, she chose an abandoned lighthouse and brought along desserts, sparkling wine and a picnic basket. She also made a DIY glow jar because the picnic was planned for after dark. She also prepared questions for her and her date to pick out of a mason jar and ask each other, because it was early in their relationship.

"Some questions were casual, like 'What is your favorite color?'" she says. "Some were deeper, like 'Where do you want to be in ten years?' I thought it was fun because it was definitely a more out of the box and intimate way to get to know each other." If this isn't an early-relationship date, you can still use this idea but make the questions a little trickier, like a game of Would You Rather.

If you're not into sandwiches or cooking, you can turn the picnic into a fun twist by ordering Chinese food or sushi and bringing that along with you instead.

You could even make a blanket fort after and spend the rest of the night snuggling!

6. Plan to not have a plan

One of the most romantic dates you can go on involves no pre-planning whatsoever. Depending on you and your SO’s transportation situation, hop in the car, get on the bus/train, or start walking, and just make it up as you go along. You might end up finding a cool event that you had no idea was happening!

Chelsea Schroeder, a freshman at Bowling Green State University, says that her perfect date was spontaneous. “[We were] driving around at midnight, not knowing where we would end up and going through multiple drive-through’s,” Chelsea says.

Let serendipity choose your date for you, and see what adventure comes to life.

7. Go to the bookstore together

If you’re both into reading, a bookstore date is a great option. Take your SO to your favorite local bookstore. You can offer to buy her a book that she wants, or the two of you can choose a book and read it together over the course of several weeks.

"I'd love being taken on a date to the bookstore," says Macey. "I think a date to the bookstore is original. Not many people do that. It also lets us share our love of books. Plus, I know I've found the right person when they're just as interested in going to the bookstore as I am."

There's nothing more romantic to a couple of book nerds than sharing the same fictional world for a little while.

8. Go ice-skating

Ice-skating isn't something you can usually do year-round, so Valentine's Day is the perfect time to put on some skates and hit the local pond.

Kristen Kraemer, a recent graduate of Rutgers University, says that she and her now-husband went ice-skating for their first Valentine's Day together. "We were in college, so I thought it was really cute that he had planned something fun and different," she says. "He didn't tell me where we were going."

If there's snow on the ground, you can also turn an ice-skating date into a snowball fight afterward. It'll definitely leave the two of you laughing and begging for mercy!

Think outside the box this Valentine's Day and make your new annual tradition to do something you've never done before. If you're both adventurous, why not go skiing, cave-diving or mountain-climbing? If you're travelers, you can save up for a romantic getaway. If anything is certain, it’s that your Valentine’s Day won’t be boring this year.

Selena Gomez Oozes Major Sex Appeal in Her 'Saturday Night Live' Performance

$

Saturday Night Live took girl power to the next level in their latest outing, as Selena Gomez played musical guest and MMA superstar, Ronda Rousey, hosted the late night show. It looks like life after Justin Bieber suits Gomez pretty well because she took the SNL stage by storm, and she certainly didn’t hold anything back.

Her first performance featured a center stage Selena, encircled by a group of gorgeous men snapping to a mashup of “Same Old Love” and “Good For You.”

But that's not the performance everyone is talking about. For “Hands to Myself,” Selena basically turned the SNL stage into a scene from 50 Shades of Grey, as she appeared dressed in a short, silky black lingerie slip. No one—including Selena's two backup dancers—kept their hands to themselves, and things got very hot and steamy, to say the least.

It's another in a series of sharp alterations from the squeaky clean image Selena has managed to mantain growing up in the spotlight. But we have to say we're happy Selena is confident and not afraid to bring the sexy—whether it be in her ensembles or choreography. And that embarrassed little giggle she let out at the end of her performance was just too adorable. We are #TeamSelena, always.

The Boston Globe Endorsed Hillary Clinton Over Bernie Sanders

With the Iowa caucuses only days away, Democratic Party Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are racing neck to neck to get more votes. While Iowa remains uncertain for Hillary, New Hampshire is looking better with a crucially timed endorsement from the Boston Globe before the Democratic Primary taking place on Feb. 9. The publication issued an editorial Sunday praising Hillary's experience on the Obama administration, her strong support for gun control and her ability to continue Obama's legacy while reinforcing her own strong leadership abilities.

Having been the Secretary of State for four years, the Globe states, is a big resume boost. And her legislative history makes her the kind of leader that the next president will need to be. In fact, the Globe calls for "someone who can keep what Obama got right, while also fixing his failures, especially on gun control and immigration reform."

Gun control has been a serious talking point in 2015 and continues to be one in 2016, especially with the waves of shooting incidents that have rocked the political landscape. The Globe predicts that Obama will not be able to make much progress on his efforts to reinforce gun control laws, meaning that the burden will be left up to the next president. The editorial suggests that Clinton plans to not only resume investigations into gun violence, but also reimpose the federal ban on assault weapons. In contrast, Bernie Sanders has not been a strong advocate for gun control, having voted to protect gun manufacturers from legal liability.

Another issue is that of health care. We never seem to hear the end of the fight over Obamacare, and this presidential race is no different. While Clinton wants to work within the current system, Bernie Sanders vouches for a single-payer system that is modeled after health care in Europe. Switching health care systems on such a large scale is not worth the trouble, the Globe argues in its endorsement.

Well, it seems that Hillary has another backer in this high-stakes campaign. Whether she will follow through on the promises that the Globe perceives are important to national welfare is to be seen. In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary.

How Often Are College Women REALLY Having Sex?

$

This post shares results from our Complete College Life Survey Series where we collected over 10,000 responses from women at 300+ colleges.  Check out even more of the results here.

Let’s talk about sex. Or maybe not?  It turns out four out of 10 college women are still virgins.  And of those who are no longer virgins, the most common age to lose their virginity was 18.  So no, you’re not the only one who hasn’t had sex yet!

When it comes to birth control, a full 45 percent of college women are on the Pill, but a lot of the time they’re taking it to regulate their period and help with cramps or acne—not just for birth control. College women are clearly adopting a “better safe than sorry” approach when it comes to pregnancy, with almost a third having taken a pregnancy test, despite that only 2 percent have ever actually gotten pregnant.

College women are taking safe sex seriously when it comes to STDs too, with 86 percent reporting using condoms (woohoo!).  STDs among college women are low, with only 4 percent reporting having had one.

If you're a diehard fan of One Direction, this year has no doubt been quite an emotional roller coaster for you. Just when you think the boys have finally given you a bit of a break from feeling all the feels, they strike again. Whether you've been mulling over the thought that Harry is possibly dating Kendall Jenner, or are debating whether Louis' new baby (is it really named Conchobar?) is a good or bad thing, it's time to put aside our differences and come together... to cry over their new video for "History."

No doubt the hiatus has been hard on us fans, but there's nothing like a bit of a flashback to bring us back around again. Get your tissues ready, my friends. Expect tons of videos from their X-Factor days, and quite a few references to their "brother Zayn." It's definitely enough to make any of us cry, and if anything, it's nice to know that the boys haven't forgotten about us, and the family that they've made along the way.

It's okay if you ugly cry; we did too. Check out the video for "History," below:

When life gets rough, and you're missing your ever energetic boy band, make sure to watch this video to remind yourself that "this is not the end, we can make it, you know it." (They'll be back eventually. We won't have it any other way.)

The Olympics Just Took a Big Step Toward Equality

The Olympics just took a big step in the direction of equality—Transgender athletes are no longer required to undergo sex reassignment surgery in order to complete in the games.

The International Olympic Committee updated its guidelines on Monday. Transgender athletes were previously required to have sex reassignment surgery in addition to hormone therapy to be able to complete in events, but the IOC noted in their guidelines that surgery is "not necessary to preserve fair competition and may be inconsistent with developing legislation and notions of human rights."

The guidelines for trans male and trans female athletes are a bit different, suggesting that "people assigned male at birth are naturally stronger and more athletically inclined than people assigned female at birth," BuzzFeed News reports.

People who transition from female to male have no restrictions, while those who transition from male to female have stricter guidelines. Once an athlete comes out as a woman, they must continue to compete in female competition for a minimum of four years.

In addition, a trans female athlete must meet certain testosterone levels, and they may be tested regularly to check those levels. 38 the Spot reports that this means the athletes will need to be on hormone therapy for at least a year, though that's still much shorter than the previous requirement of two years.

The recommendations are expected to be in place before this year's Summer Olympics. Hopefully, the IOC's guidelines will serve as a model for future policies to come!

Kendall & Kylie Jenner Love Taylor Swift As Much As You Do

Kendall and Kylie Jenner have no doubt escaped their old identities as merely the Kardashians' little sisters, and their monikers are plastered across everything from our lip products to our faux fur jackets to prove it.

The sisters may be household names now, but they were typical teenagers not too long ago. As typical as you can be when your family has their own reality show, anyway. They did things we ALL did when we were in our early teens—you know... like make our own Taylor Swift videos. Yep—this week, a home video featuring the girls and their friends dancing and singing to T. Swift just surfaced, and it's exactly what you'd expect from a group of teenage girls: fun, dramatic and showing off all the cool, ~ArTsY~ spots around town.

Watching a young Kendall rock out to T. Swift is a testament to how far we could all go in a mere five years. A member of Taylor's famous squad, Kendall joined the pop star on stage in London for a rendition of "Style" last June, according Billboard. We just hope Kendall's much gossiped about spark with Taylor's ex-boyfriend Harry Styles doesn't inspire any revenge of its own.

8 Ways to Stop Doubting Yourself

$

What if I don’t pass this test? Are my friends just hanging out with me because they feel bad for me? Can I handle working two jobs and going to school full-time? What if I never figure out my life’s purpose? Will I have to work at this crappy internship forever? Stop. The self-doubt stops right here. Instead of continuing down that destructive thought-spiral, here are eight ways to beat negative self-talk and start believing in yourself.

1. Be Aware

The initial step to overcoming anything is to first become aware of it. “Being able to catch [negative self-talk] is a huge piece of [overcoming] it,” says Dr. Tim Jordan, developmental and behavioral pediatrician. By becoming aware that we are doubting ourselves, we can sooner identify it and put a stop to it. Luckily, Dr. Jordan says that as we identify our self-doubt more and more, we will get quicker at identifying and stopping it. See? This is already a step in the right direction.

2. Focus on the Present Moment

Focusing on the current moment is one way to keep you from doubting your future self. By staying right here in this moment, doing whatever you may be doing, you can give yourself fully to it. But being in the moment can be hard, so Dr. Jordan recommends counting deep breaths in and out, or focusing on one sense, like closing your eyes and identifying how many sounds you can hear. “Focus on what can I do today?” says Dr. Jordan. “It’s all good here,” he says of the present moment. Plus, if you’ve already done everything you can do, then what is there to worry about? You’ve got it!

3. Create a Mantra

Replace that nagging “Can I really handle this?” thought with an “I’ve got this!”, and you’re already rocking the mantra game. If you’ve never used one, having a mantra can seem a little weird, but it actually works. Having a mantra helps to break that spiral of negative self-talk and center you back to a more positive frame of mind. According to Dr. Jordan, mantras are most effective when they are “short, sweet and totally positive.” A mantra should not be something like “I am not stressed,” because then you are focusing on the negative. Instead, a mantra such as “I am peaceful and calm” will help you focus in on the positive. Dr. Jordan also suggests saying your chosen mantra as if it has already happened, not like it is going to happen at some point in the future. The best part is that there is a mantra to be had for anything. Seriously, anything…which means you can tailor one specifically for your needs and what makes you feel good.

4. Surround Yourself with Positive Influences

When you are trying to overcome self-doubt, being surrounded by negative people only makes doing this harder. So, surrounding yourself with healthy, happy, encouraging people will help you on your way to eliminating that negative self-talk. Like motivational speaker Jim Rohn once said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Choose wisely, and take your time. There is no rush when picking quality people to have in your life. And if you have to lone-wolf it for a little while, then girl, you have to lone-wolf it. Rest assured, though, things really will work out. You just have to believe it and take that step forward, whatever that step may be for you.

5. Don’t Compare

In a society that is constantly telling us we’re not good enough, it is easy for us to make comparisons to the starlets we see on screen and the models we see on Instagram. But we can’t do that to ourselves! When we catch ourselves comparing our bodies, minds and souls to those of other people, we have to remember we are not them. This is such a beautiful thing because, just as we aren’t them, they aren’t us. There will never be someone with your uniquely composed looks, your beautifully complex mind and who sees what you see out of your vividly kaleidoscopic eyes. You are totally—and beautifully—incomparable. Own it!

6. Re-decide

If you decide you’re somehow not enough of something (smart, pretty, strong, etc.), this can cause self-doubt. The good news is that this decision isn’t final. By re-deciding what you think of yourself, you can totally conquer that self-doubt. So, how do you re-decide? Well, Dr. Jordan says to journal, go on a retreat, draw or just generally soul-search in order to come to a new decision about yourself that you can feel happy with. You so deeply deserve to believe you are more than enough, because you 100 percent are. And if someone tells you you’re not enough, first off that’s a jerk move on that person’s end (refer back to point four), and secondly it's that individual who is lacking something, most definitely not you. Beyoncé was probably told she wasn’t enough of something at some point, and she’s a queen, so what does that tell you?

7. Take it Slow

There is absolutely no need to stress yourself out by moving too fast, as Iris Goldsztajn, a senior at UCLA, has learned. “I try not to place unreasonable expectations on myself and take things slowly. If I have a million things to do and I feel incapable of doing them all, I deal with them one at a time and remind myself that I’m only human and that it’s okay if I can’t do everything I set out to, but that I can do my best,” says Goldsztajn. Just remember, Rome was not built in a day, and neither are powerful women. Switch lanes for a little bit and drive on the slow, thoughtful side for a while. You can hop back into the fast lane whenever you want, knowing that when you do, you’ll be ten times more confident because you’ve gotten to take it slow and think for a little bit.

8. Free Yourself

Too often we determine how we feel about ourselves by factoring in what other people feel about us. “A lot of people assess their self-worth by looking at other people,” says Dr. Jordan. So we must break free of the chains that tell us our self-worth is defined by other people. Our self-worth is solely dependent upon what we think of ourselves. When we can find freedom from giving concern to what others think of us, we are truly free to embrace who we are. What better way to eliminate self-doubt than to truly believe in ourselves?

There you have it: eight ways to kick self-doubt out of your life and bring more confidence in. We know you’ve got this, and hopefully you know that now, too. Whatever it is you’re doubting yourself about will work out beautifully one way or another, we’re sure. Keep your head up, queen, and work that crown!

Monica and Chandler are basically the definition of #relationshipgoals. Take a stroll down memory lane at all of the moments that made them one of the best couples on TV:

1. We knew WAY ahead of time they would end up together (we’re talking season 1)

2. Their first hookup

3. They didn't want to ruin their friendship

4. When Phoebe tried to trick them into admitting they were a couple

5. And she got way better results than she was expecting

6. When they finally admitted to one another what we knew all along

7. And they kissed in front of other people for the first time

8. When they were ready for whatever was on the other side of that door

9. When they snuggled on the couch of the coffee shop

10. And on Joey’s chair

11. And again on Joey’s chair

12. Or when he comforted her fresh out of the shower

13. When they were just happy to be there

14. When Monica didn’t judge Chandler for his questionable preferences

15. And when she didn’t react when he smacked her boob

16. When she would do anything to cheer him up after they fought

17. Or when they weren’t afraid to communicate openly with one another

18. When they just knew

19. When they fought and to apologize, Chandler proposed

20. Then Monica obviously outdid him when she did it

21. When they got engaged

22. When Joey married them

23. When they reassured us that even though the show was over, their relationship certainly was not

Yep, they're perfect.

21 Sure Signs You're Embracing Senioritis

We’ve been living the college life for over three years now, and our fascinated freshman year selves are slowly being replaced with slightly less motivated seniors. We know campus like the back of our hand, we can take lecture notes in our sleep and the only thing we want to focus on is savoring every last moment we have left. This just-getting-by attitude is a dangerous side effect of the college world’s most widespread disease. It's contagious enough to spread to your whole class, yet deadly enough to ruin your GPA.

Go get your medications, collegiettes. You’ve officially contracted senioritis.

1. You consider class optional

No attendance policy? Not attending.

2. The only thing you’re not late for is happy hour

Gotta get those $3 specials!

3. You’ll celebrate any and every accomplishment

I made it to my exam! Drinks for everyone!

4. You’ve mastered the art of procrastination

It takes a special kind of person to write a three-page paper in 30 minutes.

5. You’ve resorted to taking online surveys to pay for your bar tabs

Girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.

6. You get emotional over every “last time”

Oh my gosh, this is the last time I will pass that weird building. *tears*

7. Extra credit assignments are kind of a joke

Ain't nobody got time for that.

8. The only number you care about is how many points you need to pass

So, do you round up?

9. You’re always down to party…. like always

Going up on a Tuesday is actually a thing.

10. You envy all your friends who already have jobs lined up…

Life's not fair.

11. ...and don’t understand why they continue to try

Less work, more play.

12. The only list you care about is your bucket list

Screw to-do lists.

13. The only important dates on your calendar are sylly week, spring break and graduation

Priorities, people.

14. You spend your free time looking at apartment listings in your dream city

When I become a rich businesswoman, I'm definitely getting this penthouse.

15. You frequently stalk companies you want to work for but are too scared to send your résumé

Total rookie status.

16. You’re disgusted by the eager motivation of the underclassmen

Slow down, freshies.

17. You’ve been searching graduation cap designs on Pinterest daily

So cute. I bet it would only take me three days to make.

18. No matter how many you’ve been assigned, you STILL don’t see the point of group projects

The WORST.

19. You will drive to class any time it’s humanly possible

Walking is overrated.

20. The bartenders know you better than your professors do

I'll have my usual.

21. You do not understand how it’s humanly possible that you have one semester of college left

I Posted My Real Life on Social Media & Here's What Happened

$

0

Social media has become an increasingly influential channel of communication in modern society. It allows people to keep in touch with friends, fans and family members and gives them a platform to share about their lives and channel their creativity. One integral aspect of social media is the freedom it allows users to personalize the content they produce; they can post as little or as often as they want and edit their posts to perfection before releasing them into the world. Users often choose to heavily self-censor what they show the public, revealing only the side of themselves that they perceive as the best and most interesting.

Admittedly, I am one of the many who puts careful thought and consideration into each post, making sure it is appropriate and aesthetically pleasing. I adhere to social media etiquette, such as how many posts I can make in one day, and spend time coming up with cute and clever captions to highlight the fun in whatever I’m doing. However, it has always interested me how my followers would react if I didn’t put as much care into how I present my image online. For one week I decided to test this by “keeping it real” for one week on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook: honest, no filter posts about my life, even the less exciting times.

Day 1

I began on Friday night when I went to my brother’s school concert with my dad. He took a selfie of us and I uploaded it without adjusting the photo settings.

Day 2

First I shared a picture of my Saturday morning activity: watching Shark Tank while wrapped up in a fuzzy blanket. Throughout the day I posted a picture of my lunch, my dad’s steering wheel knobs, and a silly picture of myself congratulating Derrick Henry on winning the Heisman.

RELATED: What You See on Social Media Isn't Real

Day 3

When I woke up that morning I posted a picture of my pajamas, then later I shared how I was doing work while watching Project Runway. Later I posted a picture of my errand-running outfit and then a candid selfie of myself and two of my friends who surprised me at my house that night with a tub of ice cream.

Day 4

The first half of the day I posted a picture of my bagel with lox lunch and the laundry I started. That afternoon I posted a picture of my leggings and the In N Out takeout my brother and I got.

Day 5

A cereal bowl constituted my first post of the day, followed by a picture of fuzzy socks and finally a picture of my Chipotle bag.

RELATED: 17 Signs Your Social Media Stalking Skills Are Next Level

Day 6

To start off the day I posted a “get well soon” message, then posted a picture of my Chick Fil A lunch, and finished off the day with a picture of some of the treats my mom brought back from her visit to Finland.

Day 7

A picture of my chemistry joke pickup line shirt kicked off the final day of my experiment, followed by a picture of the highway and a picture of boats as I visited San Francisco with my mom.

From the first post this experience taught me quite a bit about others, as well as myself. When I first started this experiment I felt apprehension and reluctance before each post, which caused me to really think about the source of these feelings. I like to believe that I don't care what other people think about me as long as I am happy with my actions, and I discovered with this experiment that that’s not completely true. Nothing I posted was outrageous or anything I wouldn’t want my grandmother to see, yet I was scared with each post that I would lose people’s approval or the posts would negatively affect their opinion of me.

RELATED: 10 Instagram Posts We Never Want to See Again

One of my biggest fears going into this experiment was how my followers would react, and looking back I have learned just how supportive some people are of me no matter what. Throughout the week I received feedback online and in person about my social media activity, though none of it was negative. Some people commented on my posts expressing how they relate to the post’s subject, like sharing my love for a TV show or restaurant, and other people shared their appreciation of my optimism. Even those who asked me about my sudden increase in posts were just curious rather than judgmental, and multiple people said they preferred my honest posting style.

When I began this experiment I predicted that the number of likes on each post would decrease as the week went on. Seven days and 24 posts later, I was right, but what is more important are the people who kept it up all week. With each like and comment, my friends and family showed me that they are happy when I'm happy and don't care about the look of the post as much as I sometimes think they do. Giving a like means more to some people, which explains why some of my posts garnered less attention than others, and this experiment has helped me remember that and put less consideration into a silly number when analyzing the value of my posts. The amount of attention a photo, tweet, or status gets does not determine my or anyone else’s self-worth. What matters is striving to be the best version of myself by finding happiness and being kind to others.

This experiment also reminded me of the importance of enjoying the little things in life. A moment doesn’t have to be grand to be worth celebrating. From good food and relaxing at home to wearing fuzzy socks and doing laundry, there are so many reasons to smile every day if you just look for them. I have always been an optimistic person, and going into this experiment I had no plans to hide any facets of my life nor make a single complaint post, yet I did not realize how many blessings I had started to take for granted. Though I may not publicly proclaim everything I am grateful for in the future, this experiment reminded me to privately recognize my thankfulness more often.

5 Problems All Second Semester Seniors Have (& How to Fix Them!)

Finding motivation for school is tough after a long winter break––especially when you only have one semester standing between you and graduation. While you may be tempted to slack off until May rolls around, you may find yourself running into a variety of last minute road blocks.  No need to worry, though. We’ve got the solutions to all of your second semester problems!

1. Deciding on a college

If you’re at the point where you’ve been accepted into numerous schools, yet you have no idea where you want to go, you’re actually in a great position. According to Dr. Joie Jager-Hyman, author and founder and president of College Prep 360, “Admitted students get the red carpet treatment, so take advantage of that!” Once you’ve been accepted, that college clearly wants you to attend. “They will make themselves available to you to plan campus visits, match you with students who can host you overnight and help you find interesting classes to attend,” Dr. Jager-Hyman says.

She recommends all of these options in order to determine your school of choice, as well as talking to real students and checking out clubs. You’ll know which college is right for you in no time!

2. Having a lack of options for colleges

On the other hand, you may not have been accepted to a lot of schools (or at least your number one pick). If this is the case, don’t worry! Dr. Jager-Hyman says that most colleges make their admission decisions in the spring, so there’s still plenty of time left.

In the meantime, talk with your high school counselor and let them know of your first choice school. “You can ask him or her to call and advocate on your behalf if you are certain you would attend that college if admitted,” she says. Your counselor can also be extremely helpful if you’ve been waitlisted, whether that be writing a formal letter on your behalf or assisting you in reaching out on your own.

Throughout the semester, if you have any updates regarding new test scores, awards, leadership positions, or anything else to add to your application, feel free to email the admissions office! This does a variety of good things for you, like showing that you care about that school as well as your commitment to hard work.

3. Stressing about financing college

College is undoubtedly an expensive investment. Before committing to a college, be sure to sit down with your parents and discuss finances. Additionally, one of the best things to do is apply for scholarships (a lot of them!).

Devan, a sophomore at Pitt State University did so before going into her freshman year. “Throughout my senior year and the summer before I went away for college, I probably applied for over 200 scholarships,” she says. “A lot of them didn’t even require an essay and were really easy! I definitely didn’t get them all, but I was way better off than I would have been.” If that’s not enough, Dr. Jager-Hyman says that you can always reach out to schools to discuss financial aid packages.

4. Not wanting to graduate

While most seniors are ready to start the next chapter of their lives, a lot of seniors aren’t ready to move on quite yet––and that’s perfectly okay. Whether you’re afraid of so much change or you’re going to be far away from your friends, there are plenty of valid reasons that you may never want to graduate!

Dr. Jager-Hyman says that high school does a great job preparing you for your next step in life and that you have so much to look forward to. “College is the place where you will start making the decisions about your life that shape who you will become,” she says. “You’ll live in a diverse community with peers from all over the world and learn as much from your friends as you do from your classes. There’s a reason that so many people call it the best years of their lives!” Time to get excited!

5. Having zero motivation

Let’s be honest, senioritis is real AF. While you may be tempted to give into procrastination, skipping class, and more––don’t. “Colleges can rescind admission decisions if there are dramatic changes in an academic record, so be careful not to slack off too much,” Dr. Jager-Hyman says. “You’ve worked hard for 3.5 years, so don’t let it all slip away for one bad semester.” She’s exactly right! You shouldn’t let laziness overshadow all of your hard work.

To avoid the senior slump, you should first of all get (or stay) organized. Set both short-term and long-term goals for school – such as a certain GPA, test scores, etc. Peyton, a freshman at North Carolina State University says that buying a planner saved her life senior year. “January of my senior year was the worst. I had no motivation whatsoever, and my graders were starting to show that,” she says. “I decided to get a huge planner, map out assignments, test dates, deadlines, and more. It became my lifeline, so I definitely recommend getting one if you don’t already have one!”

As much as you wish you could just skip the entire semester and go right to graduation, there’s still plenty left to do before then! Not only should you keep working hard and attempt to avoid any problems that may come about, but you should also focus on enjoying the time you have left in high school. Senior year only happens once––while it may come with a variety of issues, it’s one of the best years of your life!

7 Things NOT To Do For Your Boyfriend On Valentine’s Day

Ah, Valentine’s Day. A day where millions of bros waste endless amounts of money on roses that would normally cost half as much, even the worst restaurants have ridiculously long lines to get into, and if we’re single, we happily crack a cold one and watch the game alone before going to bed satisfied with our lives.

If you hadn’t gotten the vibe, Valentine’s Day really wouldn’t mean much to us if we didn’t have to make such a fuss over you. Not that we mind because without all of you beautiful women, we’d be lost. Or happily watching sports with our bros. It’s a toss up.

But seriously, for all of you lovely ladies out there with boyfriends who have decided you want to do something nice for him as well—I salute you. That said, make sure you DON’T do any of the following, and you’ll be much less likely to mess up.

1. Compare us to anyone else

Oh, your ex-boyfriend bought you diamonds after two months of dating last Valentine’s Day? I’m sorry, I actually have to pay for college! Seriously, if my homemade, folded-into-fours card is worth less to you than the one your ex got you from Walmart’s 99 cent aisle last year, stay home. Alone. And if me making dinner for you isn’t as nice as the really expensive restaurant your ex took you to last year, call him up and see what his plans are. Seriously. There is absolutely nothing worse than being compared to other guys, especially all your crappy exes!

Do you understand the pressure of Valentine’s Day? Honestly girls, you’ve taken this to obscene levels. This is the one day you undoubtedly get to be pampered and loved (according to TV commercials and CVS) and you’ve ruined it. You’re not Cinderella and I’m not Prince Charming. However, we want you to be our princess and will happily be your prince if you’d stop telling us about how great your ex was.

2. Take us lingerie shopping

We do not want to go into Victoria’s Secret, Frederick’s of Hollywood, or even the bra and panty section of Kohl’s. We don’t need to bump into half-naked mannequins and it’s uncomfortable seeing 13-year-old girls and 65-year-old women shopping there, all of whom are either leering at us like we’re creeps or giggling at us under their breath. Then, we’ll probably pick something up saying “I like this,” not even looking at how big it is, and it’ll be entirely the wrong size and get us in trouble. It’ll kill the mood for both of us. Besides, wouldn’t you love having a super sexy secret surprise for us?

3. Give us a card

Most guys don’t have a sentimental girlfriend box with each and every one of your names on it, meaning we’re not going to keep every single thing you give to us or every little memory of the things we do together, Valentine’s Day or not. So, here’s the thing with getting us a card: it’s nice of you for thinking of us, but frankly it’s bad news all around. For starters, we’re not going to keep it forever, so how long is long enough? Do you want it on display on our kitchen table or dorm room desk so you see it and know how much we care about you every time you come over? Side note: if you need to see the card you gave me to know how much I care, our relationship has some problems. Next is the issue of the sentiment behind the card. If it’s well thought out, funny, and/or relates to something about our relationship, then the card is acceptable, but if it’s just some sappy Hallmark crap with someone else’s words and fancy cursive with glitter, we don’t care. We don’t want it.

4. Buy us flowers

Not that I think this is realistic, but in case you were thinking about it: what the heck do we want with them? We’re going to forget to put them in water and sunlight and we’ll kill them and get in trouble. See “no cards” for further explanation.

5. NO CHANNING TATUM, TAYLOR LAUTNER OR RYAN GOSLING ALLOWED—THIS IS NOT A DRILL

Seriously, we get that they’re way hotter than we will ever be. No, seriously, we literally get told that 365 days a year. Take a day off, and tell us we’re attractive. Not to get all girly here, but when you tell your man he’s everything you want, and hot and sexy, it goes right to our head. Not in a bad way, either. It’s reassuring to know how you feel about us, even if you think we already know. Knowing how attracted you are to us and how much we mean to you will lead us to respond and react to you in ways you’ll love—deeper attraction, deeper feelings, a stronger desire to protect you and call you ours, etc.! Plus, a little confidence boost heading into the bedroom never hurt anyone’s performance.

Look, we know that scene in The Notebook when Ryan Gosling is in the rain and then shirtless and then gets it on with Rachel McAdams... mainly because you tell us about it. You bite your lips and crinkle your nose while you’re sitting next to us on the couch watching HIM. The point is, you’re free to pick the movie, but don’t hurt our ego and make us watch one of those dudes get you off, especially right before using that super sexy secret surprise you hopefully didn’t bring us to VS to pick out.

6. Leave us without plans

Look, there’s something we need to get straight: ‘Chicks Before Dicks’ is not a thing. Here’s why: 1) you stole it from us. Bros Before Hoes came first, and frankly, you owe us money every time you run away and use your girlfriends as an excuse because it’s blatant copyright infringement. 2) Every bro knows that this rule doesn’t actually apply when the aforementioned “hoe” is actually someone important. Every guy hates it when his bro gets a girlfriend because things change and he isn’t required to come watch SportsCenter with you on repeat for hours when his girlfriend wants to hang out. We know that Valentine’s Day means WAAAAAY too much to every single one of you, and for those of you who are single, it’s an incredibly depressing and/or cynical day. It’s natural as a good friend to want to be there to support your sad and single girlfriends on Valentine’s Day. But, well, there’s a reason we still love our bro when he doesn’t watch SportsCenter all day with us: he’s happy. And somewhere, extremely well hidden very deep inside all of us, we want that too, so we let him go. If your girlfriends are really going to be mad at you for going out with your sweetie on Valentine’s Day, they aren’t very good friends to begin with and your life would be so much less dramatic without them. So don’t leave us hanging last minute because Laura needs a new gallon of Cherry Garcia Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream and someone to eat it with. There’s always tomorrow. As Real Live College Guy Andy puts it, “this is not a day to feel sorry for single people. If you have a significant other, celebrate it!”

7. Be apathetic

If we ask you where you want to go to dinner, it’s because we want you to enjoy our date. If we ask you what type of flowers you want, it’s because we’re thinking of you and like to make you happy. And no, that’s not a stupid question because yes, I have had girls get mad at me for getting them roses – once because she thought roses were too clichéd so I clearly wasn’t putting any thought into what I got her, the other because she shockingly hated roses. If we ask you what movie you want to watch while we cuddle on the couch, don’t say you don’t care because you’ll end up watching Star Wars, Miracle, Hoosiers, or Field of Dreams. If you’re okay with that, well then you’re awesome and shouldn’t be worried about reading this article anyway. But seriously, if we’re asking you to choose, it’s not because we’re slacking, it’s because we know how much Valentine’s Day means to you and we want it to be as good as it can possibly be, so your insight is important. I asked one of my best lady friends, a 20-year-old junior at Merrimack College, for her take on the subject. Here’s what she had to say:

“Girls say ‘I don’t care’ because they don’t want to choose. Don’t ever make a girl choose. You should have spent time getting to know her so then she wants to see how well you do. She’s leaving it kind of as a test up to you if you can take her somewhere she will enjoy! Dates are on you. When you’ve been together long enough, then she’ll start taking control.”

Here’s my takeaway from all that:

  1. RE: taking control – I’m scared.
  2. What if it’s one of those ‘we’re not really dating but you’re my date for Valentine’s Day’ type things, or Valentine’s Day is your actual first date? We don’t know anything about you yet! That’s way too much pressure on us considering…
  3. YOU MADE THIS A TEST?! You’ve completely ruined this day for yourselves. I’m disgusted.
  4. Bottom line: throw us a bone. We’re doing this for you, so humor us. You don’t have to say exactly where you want to go or what flowers you want, just give us a ballpark idea like Italian food or the red flowers that come in 12 packs with thorns.

Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and the clock is ticking. The good news for the ladies reading this is that my last sentence should really only make the guys start to panic. Any pressure has now been lifted from your shoulders because, lucky for you, you have me (and my list of things I’d actually want my girlfriend to do for me on Valentine’s day). And, really, what more could any gal need?

This New Research on Disney Princesses is Disheartening

Disney Princesses have been a mainstay in the entertainment industry for decades. We loved them as kids, and most of us still love them now. The most recent additions to the Disney Princess franchise, from The Little Mermaid to Frozen, have seen some big steps in the direction of feminism. But despite the competent female leads and emphasis on more than just romance, a problem persists: Male characters spend significantly more time speaking than female characters, according to The Washington Post.

There was a 30 year gap between Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid. Reviews touted Ariel as a spunky independent type, even though this was the first Disney Princess film where men talked more than women, The Washington Post reports. The trend continued through the 1990s, with a whopping 90 percent of the dialogue in Aladdin coming from male characters, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Newer additions to the franchise, Tangled and Brave, did better about including more female dialogue and complimenting characters on skill rather than appearance. Unfortunately, in Disney's latest royal hit, Frozen, only 41 percent of the talking came from female characters, Entertainment Weekly reports.

In a society making great strides toward feminism, why is a franchise aimed at young children belittling the voices of women? Researcher Karen Eisenhaur told The Washington Post she thinks it's a result of "carelessness" and the ingrained societal idea that "male is the norm."

Maybe the next Disney Princess will have quantifiable skills AND be given the opportunity to speak up.

How She Got There: Erin Sumwalt, Fashion Director at StyleWatch

Name: Erin Sumwalt
Job Title: Fashion Director, StyleWatch
College/Major: San Diego State University, Art History

Tell us about your day to day—what does your current job entail?

Erin Sumwalt: As Fashion Director, I am responsible for overseeing the fashion coverage in the magazine. At the beginning of each season my team and I attend the fashion shows and decide which trends our readers will respond to and want to wear. We develop story ideas related to these trends and together we choose the clothing and accessories that make it onto the pages of StyleWatch. Each day is completely different, depending upon the season and where we are in our magazine production schedule. Some days are filled with appointments at various designer showrooms where I preview new clothing and accessory collections. Other days, I may be in meetings in the office discussing concepts and content for stories, looking at page layouts, picking celeb and street style images or approving the merch for a particular story.

What is the best part of your job?

ES: There are so many wonderful things about my job! I really like that every single day is different. I love being in an environment where I am surrounded by creative people who are all invested in creating a magazine that provides our readers with a fun experience and merch at an accessible price point. When you break it down, I get to play with and talk about clothes all day.

What was your first entry-level job in your field, and how did you get it?

ES: My first magazine job was as an advertising sales assistant at ELLE. I moved to New York from San Francisco. I had never been to New York before moving and I only knew one person in the city. Before I left SF, my boss gave me the phone number of her friend who was the Advertising Director at ELLE and suggested I connect with her. I reached out when I arrived and three months later she called to tell me an assistant position was available. I went in for an interview and got the job!

What is one thing you wish you knew about your industry when you first started that you know now?

ES: Before I started working, I had no idea how much time, effort, planning and coordination of different skill sets goes into producing one issue of a publication.

Who is one person who changed your professional life for the better?

ES: I learned so much from Jeanne Schwenk, my very first boss at ELLE. She was an extremely driven, hard working, detail-oriented woman—and an incredibly tough boss. She was very particular about the manner in which everything was done. I worked so hard for her, even when I found it to be difficult. Once she felt I was ready, she pushed to have me promoted and was one of my biggest supporters as I moved into different roles. The most valuable thing Jeanne taught me was the importance of establishing, cultivating and maintaining relationships within the industry.

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

ES: Throughout my career, I have received words of wisdom and encouragement from both of my working parents. Whether I wanted more responsibility or to move into a new role at work, my mother’s words have always been in my head, pushing me to speak up and ask for what I want. Many times she has said, “Just ask! What is the worst thing someone can say? No?” My father’s advice has always been, “Don’t rest on your laurels.”

What is one mistake you made along the way, and what did you learn from it?

ES: Early in my career I passed up an opportunity to work with a fashion designer in Paris who I admired and is now extremely well known. Working with this person could have changed the course of my life; I passed on this opportunity for a very silly reason and really regretted it. For years, I kept a photo of this designer on my fridge as a reminder to really think before passing up any opportunity.

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

ES: One moment that stands out was my first Chanel show in Paris. I grew up in San Diego where I was so far away from any “real” fashion. When I was a kid, I watched the show Style with Elsa Klensch religiously. Elsa Klensch was so knowledgeable when reporting on fashion, beauty and design, and I loved hearing what she had to say about the looks from the runways in London, Milan and Paris. As a young girl, I dreamed of having her life and watching all of those shows in person. Sitting at my first Chanel show brought all those memories back and I realized I was doing what I had dreamed of.

What do you look for when considering a new hire?

ES: I look for someone who is really hungry for the position. The right person is one who is self-motivated, resourceful, a collaborator and a team player. An individual who has a voice and can express an opinion, even if it is not the same as mine.

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar goals?

ES: Apply for an internship and get everything out of it that you possibly can. Take it all in. Ask questions and learn what everyone on staff does. Be an observer. See how everything works. Ask people on staff if they have time for an informational interview. Make connections. After leaving, make certain to keep in touch with the people you worked for and never burn bridges.
