4 Reasons Why Taylor Swift's 'Out of the Woods' Video Was the Best Way to Start 2016

0

2015 was a great year for Taylor Swift. Her latest album gained even more popularity, she released a number of well-loved music videos and her tour was killer. Her video for "Out of the Woods," released on New Year's Eve, absolutely lived up to the hype—and here's why it was the best way to ring in 2016.

1. We're given a glimpse at what's to come this summer

While it hasn’t been that chilly and wintry during these past few months, we know that the worst is probably yet to come. But, when summer comes around, it will be all worth it and we, too, can stand in the glistening beach sand and waters with a blue dress on.

2. It promotes self-confidence and self-reliance

“She lost him. But she found herself. And somehow that was everything.” These words close out the video and prove that Taylor needed herself all along in order to get “out of the woods”—something that translates into all of our lives. No matter if you are in a relationship or not, it is important to find yourself and know that you will always be the person to make your own solution.

3. Taylor shows we don’t need gallons of makeup to look beautiful

In the video, Taylor is wearing the simplest of makeup and looks fabulous throughout the entire show! Whether or not you painted your face on NYE, this video is proof that what matters most is our natural beauty.

4. Taylor shows she can slay no matter what the season

Where would we be without Taylor Swift? Whether or not this is the ~real meaning~ Swift was trying to portray, watching her make it out of all extremes reminds us that no matter what she's facing, she'll come out on top.

The 15 Stages of Your New Year's Resolution

0
0

New Year's is the time to reminisce about the year that has passed and make room for an even greater year to come. It's also the time to buckle down and commit to yet another New Year's resolution, aka a life improvement that we should really make, but we all know will most likely die off before March. Every year it’s the same: We start out totally pumped to get healthy/an SO/a job, etc., but more often than not things don’t actually go according to plan. Here are the typical stages of your New Year's resolution.

1. This is the year when I become my best self!

2. Who needs alcohol and carbs? Not me!

3. I’m finally gonna put this gym membership to good use!

4. Running isn’t as bad as I thought it was.

5. How has it only been two weeks…

6. How am I supposed to last an entire year?!

7. Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.*

*Except pizza and chocolate and bacon and guacamole and cheese and donuts.

8. So what if I skip the gym? Napping is good for you, too.

9. Alright, maybe I’ve cheated the past few weeks, but next week I’ll get back on track.

10. I. Hate. Running.

11. I wish cheese was a vegetable.

12. HOW HAVE I GAINED A POUND?!

13. Alright, I'm gonna give this one more shot.

14. I've come to the conclusion that anyone who says they genuinely enjoy working out is a liar and/or needs therapy.

15. Maybe I’ll just make my New Year's resolution to read more or something else that doesn’t involve all this suffering…

So maybe your New Year's resolution didn’t last all year…or maybe it didn’t even last a month. But it’s the effort that counts, and hey, at least you tried, right? There’s always next year!

Céline Dion Covers Adele's 'Hello' & it's Absolutely Beautiful

0

As if "Hello" hasn't been starring in enough holidays this year (remember SNL's hilarious Thanksgiving skit?), Céline Dion proved that she is already completely owning 2016 by covering Adele's hit song during her New Year's Eve concert in Las Vegas. She kept the cover a surprise for her fans. "So tonight, if I may, I would like Adele to be a part of our New Year's Eve," she told the ecstatic audience. When the crowd went wild, she quickly assured everyone that Adele would not be joining her on stage: "So don't panic, she's not in the building."

Dion found the smoothest way to introduce the song to the audience, too. "Do we need to change the battery in my microphone? It kind of lost it a bit," the star said next, creating the perfect segue into her next performance. "Adele, hello? Hello?"

This isn't the first time that Dion has worked an Adele song into her repertoire. In June 2012, Dion also sang a cover of "Rolling in the Deep." When Céline Dion covers your songs regularly - that's when you know you've made it. We think Dion's cover of "Hello" is the perfect blend of her gorgeous voice and Adele's powerhouse song. It's guaranteed to give you goosebumps.

Although we're still waiting for the day the dynamic duo performs together, Dion's cover of Adele's "Hello" was nothing short of incredible.

This App Notifies You When You're Somewhere a Woman Has Made History

Women’s accomplishments throughout history are not nearly given as much attention as needed. But now, there’s an app hoping to change that! SPARK, an organization by and for women between the ages of 13 to 22, has partnered up with Google to bring you the Field Trip App, which will send notifications to your phone whenever you are somewhere near where a woman achieved something great. Better yet, you can contribute to the app to grow their database of historically significant women!

The project began after it was noted how few women were honored in Google’s famous doodles—only 17 percent before this initiative started. Google both agreed to help improve this imbalance as well as fund the research to go into this app. To take advantage of this awesome collaboration, all you have to do is download the app and then switch on the “history” option. Then, your phone will notify you any time you’re near the area where badass woman literally made history.

The app currently features over one hundred women in different places all around the globe and they’re looking to expand this database even further. SPARK is currently accepting new submissions about women of the past along with their location and a description of what they did to go down in history. Send a write-up of 150 to 300 words to sparkteam@sparksummit.com if you want to help improve the visibility of women’s history!

The girl power in this app is totally awesome! We are so excited to learn about the different women featured and see what other women the app eventually adds. Women’s historical achievements are often overlooked, so this app is a great step to promoting much-needed visibility. We already have the app downloaded to our phones, and you need to do the same!

12 Breakout Artists Who Blew Us Away in 2015

0
0

With 2015 now behind us, we thought it would be the perfect time to look back at this past year’s best breakout artists, to put into perspective just how great a year this was. Some of these artists were new to the music scene, while others have been around for some time, but were just getting their big break. One thing is for sure, they all have undeniable talent. So, in order to look forward to the new year that lays ahead let’s take a look at what new artists shined in 2015. Here’s to hoping we’ll be seeing more of them in 2016!

1. Tori Kelly

Tori Kelly had one heck of a year, and we must say, it was well deserved. Tori is known for her covers on YouTube, particularly for her cover of “Thinkin’ ‘Bout You” by Frank Ocean (it has over 24 million views) and her audition for Season 9 of American Idol. Both propelled her to getting even more exposure on the music scene. This year seemed to mark her big break though, and she had many highlights. In May, she performed her single “Nobody Love” at the Billboard Music Awards, and in June, her debut studio album was released while she was on tour in New York City.

2. Shawn Mendes

Canadian Shawn Mendes sure is making waves over here in the United States. Discovered through his song covers on Vine, he has come to be a top-selling artist in what seems like only a matter of a couple years. A big break was signing with Island Records in 2014. Further success was not far behind when in April of 2015 his first debut studio album Handwritten was released. The single “Stitches” rose sharply in the charts, reaching the Top 10 in the U.S., as well as in his native Canada. The music video for the single came out in June, and currently has over 143 million views on YouTube. From being an opening act in Taylor Swift’s 1989 tour over the summer to recently collaborating with Camila Cabello of Fifth Harmony on the song “I Know What You Did Last Summer” we have a feeling this was just the start, and that there'll be so much more to come in the new year.

3. Hailee Steinfeld

In addition to her background in acting, Hailee Steinfeld also has a love for singing. And in Pitch Perfect 2, we got to see her dedication to the craft for the very first time with the song “Flashlight.” In 2015, she released her first single “Love Myself” out of nowhere, and we instantly fell in love with it for its message of self love and acceptance. Only a few months later, she released her first EP, Haiz, which includes a number of clever, upbeat songs, including her hit single from the summer. It is fair to say that many have taken well to her debut single because it was announced on the singer’s instagram that the song went platinum

4. Halsey

In 2014, singer-songwriter, Halsey released her first single “Ghosts” on Soundcloud and subsequently came out with her debut studio album Badlands the following year after signing with a record label. Her interest in singing and writing songs began when she was young and she took to social media to post videos of her singing her own body of work.

5. Charlie Puth

We first heard of Charlie Puth after the release of the single “When I See You Again,” featuring rapper Wiz Khalifa, which was released on the soundtrack to Furious 7. But he has been recording songs before he rose to fame, and took to YouTube to post clips of him singing covers. Did you know that Ellen DeGeneres signed him and Emily Arthur, who sang covers with Puth, to her own record label after discovering them online? Yep. Subsequently, he left to sign with Atlantic Records, and let’s just say, the rest is history. His other credits include the single “Marvin Gaye” featuring Meghan Trainor and his own, “One Call Away” both of which are featured on his album Nine Track Mind.

6. Jess Glynne

In the summer of 2014, Jess Glynne was featured on a track produced by the group Clean Bandit called “Rather Be.” She provides the whimsical vocals while the electronic group supplies the sound behind Glynne. Prior to collaborating with Clean Bandit, she worked with British recording producer, Route 94, on a track called “My Love.” Both singles propelled her to wide acclaim on the music scene after doing well internationally. In August of 2015, her debut studio album I Cry When I Laugh was released and it instantly became a global hit.

7. Troye Sivan

Troye Sivan is a triple threat: he is a YouTuber, an actor, and now, a singer. Could he be any cooler? We first got to witness his singing talent when he released his EP in August of 2014. In December 2015, his debut studio album Blue Neighbourhood was released with huge success. Some of our favorite songs off the album include “Wild,” “Talk Me Down” and “Youth.” Coming off his success with this album, we can’t wait to see what the Aussie comes out with next, whether it be a new upload on YouTube, an upcoming role, or even a new EP. Whatever it may be, we’re looking forward to seeing more from him.

8. Zara Larsson

Zara Larsson, a native of Sweden, excels as both a singer and songwriter. She was first discovered in a singing competition in Sweden in 2008, and two years later, signed with a record label. In January 2013, she released her first EP Introducing, and the single "Uncover" rose to the top of the charts instantly. While we recommend listening to her entire album, our two faves, were released separately and include, "Lush Life" and "Never Forget You" featuring electronic-artist MNEK.

9. Sam Hunt

This summer, Sam Hunt came onto the music scene and we fell in love with his voice and Southern charm. Initially, he went to college to become a football player but then decided to sign with a record label last year in his native Nashville. Before pursuing his own album, he began by writing songs for other artists such as Keith Urban and Reba McEntire. Following the release of Montevallo, all of the singles from his debut album became hits and reached the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He has had quite a year from winning awards, including an American Music Award, a CMT Music Award and a Grammy, and those are only to name a few. Pretty impressive for a newcomer!

10. Rachel Platten

Although Rachel Platten has been working in the music industry since 2003, she first came onto our radar in 2011 (with the release of Be Here). In 2015 though, she officially blew everyone away with the release of the single "Fight Song." With its powerful hook, we became inspired by its lyrics to let go and to not worry about the little things that might lower our spirits. In addition to this single, we also loved the song "Stand by You." Both singles were released on her official album debut, Wildfire, on the first of January. Now that we have seen her totally killing it in 2015, we can’t wait to see what she does in 2016.

11. Alessia Cara

19-year-old Alessia Cara debuted her single “Here” over the summer on Know-it-All, her first studio album, and we have to say without shame, that we have been replaying it ever since. It became a hit overnight, so we knew we weren’t the only ones. Some favorites include, "I’m Yours,""Seventeen" and "Wild Things." If you haven’t checked them out yet, be sure to give them a listen at some point.

12. Justine Skye

Justine Skye used Tumblr as a platform to get her voice heard. She has since signed with the record label Atlantic Records and released her second album, Emotionally Unavailable, over the summer. As a lover of all things in the color purple (she's even dyed her hair a vibrant shade of violet), fans have began to refer to her as the Purple Unicorn after she was given the nickname in a recording studio session. To this day, she makes sure to give updates on the site to her followers, who are now apart of The Unicorn Nation. In 2014, she collaborated with Tyga on the single “Collide.” Most recently, she released hit singles “Bandit,” “I’m Yours” featuring Vic Mensa, and “On & On.”

How to Land a Job During Your Last Semester of College

0
0

You have one semester left of college, and you still don’t know what you’ll be doing after you graduate.  It seems like many of your fellow soon-to-be graduates have already gotten job offers, and the pressure is mounting. You’ve sent out resumes to several companies, but nothing’s panned out. What else can you do?

Several things, it turns out! If you haven’t received a job offer yet, don’t worry. We talked to career experts to find out what you can do between now and graduation to increase your chances. Here are eight last-minute things you can do during your final semester to land an awesome job.

1. Make sure you have a detailed LinkedIn profile

LinkedIn is the go-to social networking site for business professionals. For anyone looking for a job, having an updated profile is key.

Job search strategist and consultant Rick Gillis says that he’s finding a lot of college students don’t have LinkedIn profiles. “LinkedIn owns the job search market,” Gillis says. “It’s the best game in town.”

To get started with LinkedIn,  make sure you have a well-written bio that explains what you have to offer prospective employers. Make sure your profile picture and cover photo are professional and high quality. Completely fill out your profile with relevant information, and avoid posting things that don’t contribute to your professional persona (such as Internet speak, a link to your quirky blog or references to that killer party you went to last night).

Gillis also suggests making your profile very easy for recruiters to find. “Every word and every term on your LinkedIn profile is searchable,” he says. “Your profile has got to be rich in those keywords relevant to your studies and what you’re looking for.”

Load your profile up with these keywords: In your summary section, include a paragraph labeled “Specialties” and list descriptors related to your major, your skills and your career field of interest. LinkedIn has a candidate search tool that lets recruiters sort through profiles using specific search terms. By listing your specific qualifications, your profile will be a prominent result for recruiters looking to hire those with your interests and abilities.

2. Use your campus’s career services

Your college’s career center is full of resources to help you find jobs, update your resume, prepare for interviews and connect with people in your future industry.

“Your search will be most effective if you utilize this diverse set of resources,” says Mindy O’Mealia, a career development specialist at Rutgers University. “These include career services appointments, network events, workshops, online job search tools and personal connections.”

To help get some guidance in your job search process, set up an appointment with an adviser at your university’s career center. He or she will help you learn how to tailor your resume and cover letter to specific companies as well as direct you to places where you can find job openings.

Your university also hosts career fairs and other networking and recruiting events. “Attend career-related seminars, employer events and information sessions to establish employer contacts,” O’Mealia suggests.

At these events, you’ll interact with recruiters face-to-face and get a chance at making a great first impression. Recruiters are more likely to remember you for future opportunities when they can put a face and a vibrant personality to the name on your resume.

3. Target companies you’re interested in and reach out to them

Gillis suggests identifying 15 to 20 companies you would genuinely want to work for to start targeting. Doing a targeted job search can be much more effective than simply sending out a generic resume to as many companies as possible.

First, identify the kinds of companies you would want to work for. Then, cross-reference this list with the kinds of applicants they are seeking: Do you have the skills and qualifications the company is looking for? Narrowing down the list to companies that you are excited about will make the job-search process easier for you, and focusing on businesses that want the skills you have also increases your chances of getting an offer.

Once you’ve done that, it’s time to reach out! It’s important to let these companies know that you’re interested in working for them. Gillis encourages job seekers to use LinkedIn to find people who work for those companies and reach out to them. “Click on the profiles you’re interested in,” he says. “If someone looks at your profile as well, you can send an invitation to connect! This is a great way to start building your network.”

Personalize your invitation to connect with a message like, “Thanks so much for looking at my profile. I’d love to connect with you!” If this connection can help you in any specific way, don’t hesitate to request an informational interview to learn more about the company or a shadowing session to see what the job is like. It’s important to have an established network in your industry. Making connections now can help open doors for you down the line. You never know when someone will remember you for a future opportunity!

4. Talk to alumni in your field of interest

Vicki Salemi, author of Big Career in the Big City, says that alumni are a great resource to tap into during your spring semester.

“Definitely visit your career center on campus and ask for alumni in your geography, industry and/or company so you can network with them,” she says.

If you’d like to go into a field that’s relevant to your major, contact graduates in your major to figure out what kinds of jobs they’ve had and how they went about finding them.

“Reach out to alumni for advice, for next steps in your search, for connections,” Salemi says. “Ask if they would do anything differently now that they’ve been in the industry for a while. What was the biggest mistake they made when they graduated? What would they do now if they could do it all over again? Learn from their failures as well as their successes.”

Alumni have gone through the same process you’re dealing with now. They can tell you how to find jobs in your industry as well as give you a look at what it’s like from the inside. Alumni can be a vital part of your job-search tool kit!

5. Leverage your personal network

How will people know you’re looking for a job if you don’t tell them?

“Network with friends, family, neighbors, local business owners,” O’Mealia says. “Get your name, resume and the word out there!”

Gillis agrees that networking is essential to the job search process. Opportunities can come through second or third connections. Maybe your friend has an uncle who works in a field you’re interested in, or a classmate’s mom is the hiring manager at that company you’re eyeing.

Leveraging this personal network can be very fruitful, and Gillis definitely recommends taking advantage of it. “Let people know you’re graduating soon and are looking for opportunities in your career field of interest,” he says. “Get people interested in helping you.”

Be wary of sending out mass messages—you don’t want to seem like you’re spamming your friends. If you know a specific friend, acquaintance or family member who has connections to the types of jobs you’re interested in, send him or her a message through Facebook or email. Keep it personal but brief. Let him or her know that you’re looking for a job and would appreciate his or her help. Do you need an introduction to someone at your aunt’s company? Would you like to chat about what her job is like? Do you want her to keep you in mind if she hears of any openings? Be specific about how she can help you.

6. Have a new experience

Your academic record may be stellar, but your extracurricular activities may not be that well-rounded. Believe it or not, this could definitely impact the way recruiters respond to you.

“Chances are your resumes and experiences are extremely similar to classmates who have landed jobs,” Salemi says. “Learn from them. What are they doing differently?”

You and your fellow collegiettes may have followed a similar trajectory as far as academics go up to this point in your life, so it’s important to do what you can to make yourself stand out.

If you see lots of classmates getting job offers, Salemi recommends examining their behavior to see what makes them stand out. “Maybe they’re working their connections harder, maybe they had an experience like being an RA or studying abroad that gave them an edge,” she says. “Learn from those experiences and try a new experience this spring semester to put you ahead of the pack.”

It’s definitely not too late to get involved with extracurricular activities on campus or start your own student group. If you’re interested in volunteering, take an alternative break with United Way or Break A Difference instead of hitting up Cancun for the fourth year in a row. The leadership experience and community involvement will not only look great on your resume, but you’ll also be able to meet new people who could point you in the direction of job opportunities.

7. Apply to internships and contract agencies

At the very least, you can always apply to internships. The career experts we spoke with all agree that this is a good last-minute strategy.

An internship will hold you over during the summer months if you don’t manage to find the job you love before spring semester is over. It may give you a sense of fulfillment and direction while you continue to look for more long-term employment.

Lesley Mitler, founder of the college career coaching service Priority Candidates, says that if you know an internship has “a proven track record of leading to full-time employment,” it might be good to consider.

Mitler also suggests becoming a contract employee. Temporary job agencies are looking for contract workers to work for short periods of time, usually on small projects. Temping offers the same benefits as internships, with one explicit perk: You will get paid.

Salemi used this method herself when she struggled to find work after graduating. “I landed my first ‘real job’ in November after having graduated in May,” she says. “Most of my friends were already employed by Labor Day, but I stuck to the search and ended up with what I thought was the best employer as well as job at the time. In hindsight those eight weeks didn’t really matter, as I kept busy temping.”

Keep in mind that you shouldn’t stop your job search once you’ve found an internship or temp work. Remember, these are stepping stones to future employment and not necessarily the be-all and end-all of your career.

8. Keep calm and continue the search

Last but not least, if you’re struggling to find a job, do not panic.

“Panicking is not going to serve you at all,” Gillis says. “What you need to do is put together a plan. You need to aim that energy.”

Use these ideas to come up with specific steps to help you on your job search. Don’t forget that what worked for someone else may not work for you.

“You must remember that you are on a path that is defined by your individual set of career criteria,” O’Mealia says. The job hunt is a highly personalized process that should be tailored to your interests, skills and abilities.

That means you shouldn’t worry when it seems like everyone else is getting job offers. The hiring process is vastly different depending on the industry. “Some companies, like financial institutions, accounting firms and consulting firms, are proactive about hiring students well in advance of their start date,” Mitler says. “Many other companies hire and advertise positions on an ‘as needed’ basis. In this case, you will have to be close to your graduation date or already a graduate to interview for these opportunities.”

While you’re waiting, don’t stress! “Definitely keep your spirits up,” Salemi says. “You never know when you’ll make a new connection, so the best thing you can sport is a smile and a positive attitude.”

She suggests several activities to keep yourself in a positive frame of mind: eating healthily, exercising, sleeping well, reading inspirational blogs (Prolific Living and Penelope Trunk offer touching words of advice) and—most of all—enjoying your last semester of college!

“Continue to put feelers out and make contacts with alums, continue the job search, continue the networking swirl,” Salemi says. “Don’t give up; just keep going. And don’t put a ton of pressure on yourself—you will become employed.”

If you follow these eight steps, you’ll be well on your way to finding a job during your spring semester. Good luck, collegiettes!

These Are The Most-Searched Trends From 2015

Each year brings us loads of new trends to shop, try and love. Lyst, a shopping site, recently put together a list of the most searched-for fashion trends of 2015! Using their sales data and global searches, along with social media mentions, page views, “wishlysting” and active browsing behavior, the shopping site determined 50 of the past year’s most wanted styles.

Lyst put together the adorable infographic above to illustrate their data. Some of our favorite fashion items (obviously) made the list, including the to-die-for Stuart Weitzman Highland Boots and Dior’s “So Real” sunglasses. Among their statistics, they found that the Athleisure trend was the top-selling category of the year—so we know it’s not time to put away our Nikes yet. In addition, the search rate for Kiini crochet bikinis increased by 822 percent and there were over 135,000 searches for culottes in one month. Not to mention that Chloe’s Faye bag was, on average, clicked every three minutes.

Here are Lyst’s top trending products of 2015 by month:

January: Bella Freud 1970 sweater

February: Stuart Weitzman Highland boots

March: Mansur Gavriel bucket bag

April: Aquazzura Christy lace-up flat

May: Self Portrait Azaelea dress

June: Kiini crochet bikini

July: Adidas Stan Smith sneaker

August: Chloe Faye bag

September: Tibi off-the-shoulder tunic

October: Rachel Comey Legion jean

November: Topshop Jive pump

December: Loewe Puzzle Bag

As much as we love our Nikes and Lululemon leggings, do you really think Athleisure is here to stay? It will be exciting to see what the new year brings for fashion, and whether athletic wear is replaced with a different trend or not.

18 Times Meredith & Cristina Were Friendship Goals

0
0

There is no bond that can compare to a girl and her best friend, especially Meredith and Cristina.  Whether it be the bad decisions, constant support or brutal honesty that these two share, one thing is always for sure: they are each other's number one fans.  You can throw any obstacle at these two and they will tackle it together.  They are basically conjoined at the hip and constantly thriving off of each other.  There are so many memorable moments between these two that Grey's Anatomy has blessed us with and hopefully many more to come!  Here are 18 of the times when Meredith and Cristina were SO goals!

1. When they danced it off

One of the many things that this dynamic duo is notorious for.  Sometimes you just have to pretend that your troubles don't exist for a second; and what better way to do that than to dance like nobody's watching?

2. When they helped each other through heartbreak

There comes a point in every friendship when you need to prove to your friend that she is better than the person who hurt her.  Giving reassurance becomes so much easier when it's for the sake of your "person."

3. When they pictured themselves growing old together

Are you really best friends if you haven't joked about having wheelchair races in your nursing home someday?  A true friendship isn't meant to be temporary, but last a lifetime.

4. When they survived a plane crash together

Though you and your bestie may not experience something quite as dramatic together, this surely represents all of the ups and downs that occur within a friendship.  In the end, you always realize how much you love and appreicate them.  You truly couldn't survive without each other.

5. When they just chilled and enjoyed nature together

Because what better feeling is there than being carefree and enjoying the fresh air while sharing a good laugh with your partner in crime?

6. When Meredith helped out Cristina even though she shaved her eyebrows off

True friends still love you even when your eyebrows aren't on fleek.  Then they help cut you out of your wedding dress after you get left at the alter.  (Again, maybe a little dramatic).

7. When wine was the deal breaker

Are you really best friends if you don't support each other's wine addictions?

8. When they were bums together

Because who actually enjoys getting ready and going out into the real world?  You know you're best friends if you are perfectly content with sitting under piles of blankets, turning into living chipotle burritos, and doing absolutely nothing together for hours on end.

9. When they snuck a flask onto the baseball field

Baseball...Bseball...Bsebl...GtDrk...Get Dn...Get Drunk. Basically the same thing, right?  Best friends might not always make the most smart team, but definitely the most fun!

10. When Derek and Meredith basically added Cristina to their marriage

True best friends never let a boy get between them... in some cases, literally.

11.  When they agreed on the most accurate statement

True friends share the same thoughts...or both just share the gift of common sense.

12.  When they combined work and play

Because whoever said you can't take some shots while studying the anatomy of a brain was so wrong and these two proved it.

13. When they vent to each other. All the time.  About everything.

Because when she's your best friend you don't even have to pretend that you're listening to her.  You two can go back and forth complaining and completely disregarding each other but it's 100 percent acceptable.

14. When they stole grapes from the nurses' lounge

You aren't truly best friends if you don't go to extreme lengths for food. Being bad never felt so good.

15. When they were each other's person

Being someone's person isn't just being their friend; it's a commitment... it's a lifestyle.

16. When they saved a life together... no big deal.

You haven't truly shared a special moment with your friend until you two actually created a heart beat and brought a person back to life.

17.  When they partied like it was the weekend

Best friends are down to cause trouble with you any day of the week.

18. When they crafted together even though they both suck at crafting

You simply can't deny the fact that no matter how bad you are at crafting, you and your best friend always end up resorting to it when you're bored.  On the bright note, you can feed off of each other's terrible crafting skills and maybe make something decent!

4 Things 'Making a Murderer' Didn't Tell Us

0
0

Netflix has provided us with no shortage of shows to binge watch over winter break. The one show everybody's been talking about? Making a Murderer, a ten-episode documentary following the case of Steven Avery, who was released after 18 years of wrongful imprisonment—only to be convicted of murder just two years later, in 2005. Still in prison serving a lifetime sentence (without the possibility of parole), Avery has continued to maintain his innocence.

The case is filled with twists and surprises so shocking they can't be made up. The timing of the murder case has many questioning whether Avery committed the murder, or whether he was set up by the Manitowoc County police department, whom he'd just sued for $36 million. Avery's lawyers raised a number of questions we still can't find answers to—among them, the complete lack of evidence in Avery's trailer, where 25-year-old Teresa Halbach was allegedly raped and supposedly had her throat slashed; the suspicious placement of Avery's blood in Halbach's car (which becomes even stranger when it's discovered that a vial of Avery's blood in evidence from a previous case was tampered with); the fact that Sgt. Andrew Colborn and Lt. James Lenk were heavily involved in (and apparently vital to, given they happened to be able to produce some pretty damning evidence) the case despite the obvious conflict of interest; and others. If you haven't watched the docuseries yet, it's worth a watch—seriously, you'll probably binge the entire series in a day—before you read on.

By the conclusion of the ten episodes, you're left wondering how in the world any judge or jury could find Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey, guilty of their alleged crimes. While this doesn't change some of the shady stuff the documentary reveals, there are some vital bits of information that give us a little bit of a different perspective.

1. Avery may have 'targeted' Halbach

Ken Kratz, the prosecutor on Avery's case, told People that some of the evidence he presented wasn't represented in the Netflix series. October 31 wasn't the first time Halbach visited the Avery property; on October 10, 2005, Halbach stopped by to take photos for AutoTrader magazine. Reports show Avery greeted her in nothing but a towel, and she was "creeped out," according to Kratz. The morning of October 31, Avery called AutoTrader (as he had done several times previously) to request that Halbach in particular come out again; knowing she was skeptical of him, Avery took steps to pretend it was his sister who was calling to request her. That same day, phone records show he called Halbach three times, twice hiding his number with the *67 feature. Then, Kratz says, Avery makes "one last call at 4:35 p.m., without the *67 feature. Avery first believes he can simply say she never showed up… so tries to establish the alibi call after she's already been there, hence the 4:35 call. She will never answer of course, so he doesn't need the *67 feature for that last call."

2. Avery had just purchased tools that Dassey described in his confession

Only three weeks before the murder, it was noted that Avery bought handcuffs and leg irons, which Dassey said in his confession were used to hold Halbach to the bed. Avery, however, claimed he had purchased them for use with his then-girlfriend, Jodi.

3. Former inmates say Avery had plans to torture women

In his interview with People, Kratz said that inmates who knew Avery claimed Avery intended on building a "torture chamber" when he was released from prison, and that he wanted to "rape, torture and kill young women." He was also allegedly told by a fellow inmate that the best way to get rid of a body was to burn it.

4. Brendan was molested by Avery earlier in life

During a phone conversation from prison with his mother, Brendan confessed that Avery had molested him in the past. Though it has no bearing on Teresa Halbach's case, it does reveal a little more about Avery's character—and it gives insight into how Avery might have been able to manipulate Brendan into aiding him in this crime.

Mom: Then why didn’t you tell him that.
Brendan: Tell him what
Mom: That Steven made you do it. You know he made you do a lot of things.
Brendan: Ya, I told them that. I even told them about Steven touching me and that.
Mom: What do you mean touching you?
Brendan: He would grab me somewhere where I was uncomfortable.
Mom: Brendan I am your mother.
Brendan. Ya.
Mom: Why didn’t you come to me? Why didn’t you tell me? Was this all before this happened?
Brendan: What do you mean?
Mom: All before this happened, did he touch you before all this stuff happened to you.
Brendan: Ya.
Mom: Why didn’t you come to me, because then he would have been gone then and this wouldn’t have happened.
Brendan: Ya ..
Mom: Yes, and you would still be here with me.

Whether or not Avery and Dassey are guilty of Teresa Halbach's murder still seems unclear to us armchair detectives; so up in the air, in fact, that the petition to pardon the two men has garnered more than 100,000 signatures. Though there's likely much more to be revealed about this case, it is clear that between the bizarre circumstances under which much of the evidence against Avery was discovered and the close-to-coerced confession from Dassey, there was plenty of mistreatment and abuse of authority present in the treatment of both men.

One dreamy guy + a couple dozen roses + a house full of lovestruck women = great reality TV. That’s right, The Bachelor is back on, which means you get to snuggle up with your girls every Monday night and watch what Chris Harrison will describe as “the most dramatic season ever.” Whether we like to admit it or not, The Bachelor is one of our guilty pleasures, so we’re all familiar with what goes through our heads every Monday night.

1. Sorry, GPA; The Bachelor is on. Finding love is more important for the next two hours.

2. Awww, cute, you’re acting like besties. Good thing you’ll all stab one another in the back within the next half hour.

3. Chicks are PISSED they didn’t get called for the group date. Sucks to suck.

4. Oh, here’s the Bachelor getting ready for the date. In the shower. *Sigh*

5. You know what would make this group date more interesting? If someone threw a punch.

6. How did some of these girls get on this show? I’m way smarter and prettier. I wonder what the application is like…

7. Jealousy at its finest: when the one-on-one date is announced.

8. I would NEVER want to face my fear on a date. Who the hell goes bungee jumping on a regular basis anyway?

9. Well, that’s a lot of tongue for national television.

10. Oh, of course the date includes a hot tub. Shirtless Bachelor round 2.

11. And there’s the designated crazy chick. The producers must set this up. No one’s actually THAT insane.

12.  Seriously, everyone has a sob story. How does he keep track of them all?

13. I wonder how much they drink. They’re literally always drinking.

14. And here come the tears. Alcohol + drama = a hot mess.

15. Please, tell me one more time how you’re 'here for the right reasons.'

16. I wonder if real guys feel this way about love. Probably not.

17. Forget all these other girls; I will totally accept your rose. *wink*

18. Why must Chris Harrison announce the last rose? Like, we know there’s only one left.

19. Alright, you’ve known him for approximately five minutes. He’s not your soul mate. Go home.

Here’s to "the most dramatic season of The Bachelor” yet!

How She Got There: Liz Salcedo, Founder & CEO of Everpurse

0

Name: Liz Salcedo
Age: 30
Job Title and Description: Founder & CEO of Everpurse
College Name/Major: Wheaton College/Sociology
Website: everpurse.com
Twitter Handle: @Lizsalcedo

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

Liz Salcedo: When you’re running a small and quickly growing startup, every day is different! I focus on working with our brand partners, developing business strategy and assisting with product development. This means that I get to work directly with fashion brands on all the different aspects of product design. I test out all our samples and make decisions on the tiniest details, which can have huge impacts on user experience. I also work closely with other team members on customer service, logistics, R&D and production.

What is the best part of your job?

LS: Developing new products! Whether it’s more functionality or new bag designs with a brand partner, I love imagining a product, envisioning all the varied details of how it will be used and then through a lot of work see it come to life!

What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

LS: After college, I actually started as a social worker for HIV+ women and children. After four years in the field, I switched gears and started working on Everpurse. It started as a personal project—designing, building and then perfecting a bag that would charge my iPhone. A year later, I quit my social work job and officially started Everpurse. I basically bootstrapped my brain into something totally new.

What is one thing you wish you knew about your industry when you first started out that you know now?

LS: The gap between the worlds of fashion and tech is so wide that we can use the same words, but be speaking entirely different languages. For example, in technology “embossing” means to create a raised surface, while in fashion, embossing means to created an indented surface. In both technology and fashion, a “tool” is something used in manufacturing to many make identical parts. However, in the technology industry, a tool is made of steel and takes at least a month to create. In the fashion industry, a tool is made of wood and can be made (and re-made!) in a matter of hours. Differences like these can make a huge difference in expectations when discussing designs, sample making and production!

Who is one person who changed your professional life for the better?

LS: Tracy Banks-Geiger. Early in my career she taught me about the importance of building a strong team, taking care of those you work with and taking care of yourself. While our team works very hard, we also make sure to prioritize taking time to go out together, laugh together and share interesting things we’ve learned outside of work. It’s important that we enjoy coming into the office and working together. After all, life is too short to hate the job you do.

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

LS: Right now, after spending the last year traveling so much for work (150,000 miles this year, including seven trips just to China!), the most valuable piece of advice has come from one of my mentors: “Identify where home is for you, where you get the most support from friends and family, where you feel most relaxed and at peace, and then try to invest as much time there as you can. Even if that’s only 20 percent or 40 percent of the year. No one can do it all on their own.”

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

LS: As entrepreneurs, we’re always so excited about creating the next thing, the next brand, the next tech development, the next bag shape or style. At times we have jumped too quickly into working on our next big idea, without fully monetizing on what we already have. The accessories market is huge and most consumers have never heard of Everpurse. We still have a lot of volume we can sell with the tech and designs we have right now before we need to invest in producing our next product.

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

LS: Walking into a store and seeing Everpurse on the shelves! After months of dreaming about these bags, seeing them on paper, building samples, producing them in the factory and then packaging them into boxes for shipment, our vision for tech seamlessly integrated into beautiful accessories had finally come to life!

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

LS: I look for someone who can do their job better than I can. I need team members who are confident, who can take charge and who I can trust to get the job done without micro-management.

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

LS: If you are looking to start your own company, focus first on what you can do yourself right now with very little money to test out your idea. At Everpurse we prototyped for almost a year with moldable plastic beads, fabric and spare electronic parts, testing the product and proving demand, before I decided to go full-time and make Everpurse an official business. Starting this way can have a huge impact on how quickly you get to a good idea, a product you can produce and something people want to buy.

What You'll Need:

  • Throw blanket—preferably fleece
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure and/or ruler

Step 1:

Lay your throw blanket out horizontally on a flat surface. Find the center of the blanket; this is where the neck hole will be. Starting from the outside edge, cut into the blanket about 14 inches toward the center.

Step 2:

In the center, where the line you cut in step one led to, cut a circle for your neck. To approximate the correct size, measure around your neck with the tape measure. Then, add one inch to that measurement.

Step 3:

That's it! Once you throw your new sweater wrap around your shoulders, you can fold the edges at the front down to form a collar. Add a belt and prepare to rock this winter look!

Why Emergency Contraceptives Should Only Be Used for Emergencies

0
0

As much as we may try to be in control or prepared for any and every situation, it isn’t always possible—accidents do happen. Condoms break, or you forget to take your pill, and that can be a scary situation. Fortunately, emergency contraceptives have been made more readily available to women in recent years; in 2009, it was approved without prescription to women ages 17 and up and since 2013, women as young as 15 can get access to the morning after pill. But as one of the most easy-to-get forms of birth control, it might seem more convenient to rely on Plan B as your Plan A than to have to get a prescription for regular birth control (and not to mention, have to remember to take it each day)—so is it okay to take EC after every instance of intercourse and call it a day? We checked in with experts on how emergency contraception works, when to use it, and whether it's safe to use regularly as your primary form of birth control.

What is emergency contraception?

Emergency contraception goes by a lot of different names; the morning-after pill, the day-after pill, morning-after contraception and more. There are also various brands of EC that you can choose from, including Plan B One-Step, Next Choice One Dose, My Way and ella. All of these emergency contraceptives essentially serve the same purpose, and are used in the same way; they are pills you can take up to a certain amount of time following unprotected sex (usually five days) in order to lower the possibility of pregnancy.

Copper IUDs (rather than hormonal IUDs, the more popular form of IUDs) may also be used as emergency contraception, if you're looking for something that will give you more permanent results after the fact—up to five days after you've had unprotected sex, you can visit a doctor to insert an IUD, which is a small, T-shaped device made of copper that will be effective for multiple years.

How does an emergency contraceptive work?

There is a common misconception about what emergency contraceptives do. They do not stop pregnancies; however, they do reduce the risk of a pregnancy up to 95 percent, or 99 percent when using a copper IUD, if taken within the allotted time period.

A copper IUD releases copper ions that destroy sperm before it can fertilize an egg, while an emergency pill simply keeps you from releasing an egg. Therefore, emergency contraceptives do not terminate a pregnancy, but keep one from beginning in the first place.

When should emergency contraceptives be used?

For emergencies! They are designed to be a safety net for when unexpected situations arise. If you plan on having sex regularly or at all, taking birth control and using condoms are good precautions to take—especially since research shows that EC isn't as effective as standard forms of birth control can be. According to Princeton University, if you used only EC for a year, your annual pregnancy risk would be 20 percent. That means that if you have unprotected sex for a year and solely rely on emergency contraception each time, statistics show that your risk of pregnancy reaches one in five. In addition, obesity can lessen the effectiveness of emergency contraception; Plan B and Next Choice may not work well for women with a BMI over 25, and not at all for those with a BMI higher than 30. Ella, however, can be effective up to a 35 BMI, and copper IUDs are not affected by weight.

Emily*, a student at Indiana University, says she does not rely on EC regularly for that reason. “On the package, there is a warning about taking it regularly because it is not as strong as regular birth control,” she says. “So instead, I just rely on taking normal birth control daily.”

Not to mention, taking EC as a regular contraceptive can get incredibly expensive; it can cost anywhere from $35 to $60 a dose, depending on the brand. Birth control pills, on the other hand, can be anywhere from free up to $50 for a month's supply; many insurance plans cover it fully.

This doesn't mean that you shouldn't have EC on hand, though.

Dr. Shana Dowell, an obstetrician-gynecologist at the Vanderbilt Center for Women’s Health at NorthCrest Medical Center in Springfield, Tennessee, says, “I think ideally if you are going to have sex and you don't want to get pregnant, than starting some sort of birth control beforehand is best,” she says, adding that this is in no way to say that emergency contraception should be avoided. “There are so many barriers, however, to women getting appropriate contraception (cost, transportation, health insurance, privacy) and mistakes happen (prescriptions running out, condoms breaking). Or, having morning after pills as an option in the case of sexual assault is so important.”

How do the side effects of EC compare to the effects of the pill?

When it comes down to it, the effects of birth control and EC are relatively similar: nausea, breast tenderness, dizziness, fatigue and lower abdominal pain. “Most women tolerate them quite well,” says Dr. Dowell. “There are only a few contradictions, but this is a great option for most women who have a contraceptive mishap.” This means that like with any pill, some will experience intensified, varying side effects.

“I know friends who have taken it a few times and have experienced nausea, cramping, and irregular periods that lasted several weeks,” Emily says of her and her friends' personal experiences. “I really think it is different depending on the collegiette and her body.”

Although the symptoms associated with EC are relatively the same as those associated with taking birth control and a normal period, there are instances where girls have experienced painful or abnormal side effects. Even though most women do not experience unusual discomfort, there is the potential for some negative effects. This shouldn’t necessarily discourage you from taking it—but your body may tolerate long-term, consistent birth control better than it does EC.

According to Amanda*, a student at William Patterson University, “Every time I've taken it, it was followed by extremely painful cramps and back pain as well as very heavy vaginal bleeding. It usually lasts around 24 hours. It was so bad that after a while I just went on a hunt on finding the right birth control!”

If you plan on having sex, from a financial, health and mental standpoint, it is ultimately better to invest in regular birth control or condoms; after all, Plan B is just what the name suggests: a plan B. But this isn't to say that you shouldn't be able to count on emergency contraceptives when you need them—that's what they're there for, after all. If you're ever unsure about how well-protected you were during intercourse, it's always better to be safe than sorry. So know where to get them at a moment's notice if you need them, but don't rely on emergency contraceptives as your only form of birth control.

Starbucks Introduces the New Latte Macchiato

0

If you’re getting sick and tired of your typical Starbucks order, you’re in luck. The coffee empire just introduced its newest drink to the permanent menu, the latte macchiato.

You may be wondering how it differs from the classic latte or the caramel macchiato. The latte macchiato, which came to Starbucks stores on Jan. 5, has three distinct layers.

According to Starbucks, the drink "features steamed whole milk that is perfectly aerated and free-poured creating dense foam reminiscent of meringue. The beverage is then marked by slowly-poured full espresso shots, creating a signature espresso dot." That's some pretty confusing coffee-speak, but it basically just means that the barista carefully pours espresso into milk to create layers.

The latte macchiato will be available in Starbucks across the U.S., Canada and some stores in Latin America.

If you enjoy coffee flavor (no, caramel Frappuccinos don’t count), you’ll definitely want to give the latte macchiato a try. Angus Maxwell, a certified coffee master who works at a Starbucks in Brooklyn, told Cosmopolitan: "Anyone who likes just a bold drip coffee, maybe this is their entry into trying something with a little more milk."

Whether you’re into cappuccinos, Americanos or chai teas, the latte macchiato is the perfect opportunity to try something different. Maybe it will even become your new fave. If you try it tomorrow, let us know what you think!

VIDEO: We Have Our First Look at Disney's Newest Princess, Moana

The fierce Mulan, graceful Pocahontas and daring Rapunzel all showed us what bravery is, and Disney’s newest princess, Moana is no exception to the influential cast of female role models.

CBR trailers’ most recent preview offers hints at the picture’s exciting plot line, which follows her journey to complete a quest her ancestors started.

Played by 14-year-old Pacific Island native, Auli’I Cravalho, Disney’s youngest princess proves that even the youngest souls can teach us how to overcome life’s obstacles.

Set to release on November 23, 2016, this flick will be the perfect cinematic treat to kick off the holiday season. Can’t wait that long? Neither can we. Luckily, Disney understands our passion for female empowerment and has graciously agreed to release short behind-the-scenes segments to ease, or maybe even tease, our curiosities.

30 seconds of animation later and we already know that Moana will be Pixar’s biggest Polynesian crush to date. Drawn with olive skin, dark hair and full brows, this 15-year-old bronze beauty is totally fearless.

Let Moana’s bold nature to leave her small island home and explore new horizons be a lesson to us all. The places beyond the confines of our comfort zones offer scenes and self-realizations waiting for us to explore, but it takes faith, persistence and confidence to get us there.

Although we may not run into “enormous sea creatures, underworlds and ancient folklores” in our own personal lives, Moana’s triumph against tricky trails and tribulations throughout her journey teach us that learning how to dance in the rain is as important as reaching your desired destination.

This Whites-Only Dating Site is Understandably Upsetting People

Utah residents were shocked and angry last week to discover a billboard for WhereWhitePeopleMeet.com, a site for—you guessed it—white people to romantically connect with other pale folk, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

While you may think this site doesn’t need to exist, WhereWhitePeopleMeet.com justifies itself using the ol’ “Why’s there no WHITE history month?” excuse: “There are various dating websites that promote and cater to just about every origin, race, religion and lifestyle out there. So again, why not 'Where White People Meet.Com'?”

The Tribune reports that people were outraged but also confused at the billboard’s placement in Utah, which census records estimate to be 91 percent white.

This dating site joins a long tradition of white people totally not getting the idea that other groups might want to carve out some space just for themselves, while whites don’t need to do that because most things in society were created specifically for them. Remember those fake White Student Unions that were popping up a few months ago?

It seems the only good news is that anyone who joins WhereWhitePeopleMeet.com is almost certainly someone you don’t want to date anyway.
