15 Moments in Entertainment This Year That Were Total Wins for the Black Community

Oftentimes, Hollywood and the entire realm of entertainment are criticized for its lack of diversity among stars, films and TV shows. After all, there is the tendency to "white-wash" original characters of color as they are replaced by white actors and actresses. However, with the rising racial tension in the country during the past few years and the acknowledgment of the lack of diverse faces on the screen and in music, 2015 has brought about a change in the field of entertainment where the black community, specifically, has been able to rejoice in the fact that when one of us wins, all of us win.

1. Viola Davis is the first black woman to win an Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama

Primetime Emmy Night served some major girl power—Viola Davis not only became the first black woman to win Best Actress in a Leading Role - Drama, but girl-on-girl support shined with Taraji P. Henson's congratulatory praise for not only Viola, but also Regina King and Uzo Aduba.

2. Misty Copeland becomes the first black principal dancer in the American Ballet Theater

Misty became the true definition of #BlackGirlMagic when she became the first Black Principal Dancer in the American Ballet Theater's 75 years this past June and a Glamour Woman of 2015. After a lauded performance in Swan Lake as the lead, a biographical documentary covering her rise over her potentially career-threatening injury and a one Under Armour ad, the 32-year old is showing no signs of slowing down, especially as she continues to unapologetically talk about the issues of race and diversity in the dance world.

3. Empire returns for a second season, followed by the premiere of Rosewood

The show that premiered last year and became a musical phenomenon starring Taraji as Cookie and Terrence Howard as Lucious Lyon returned for a second year filled with a slew of guests stars and even more musical talent while also addressing social issues affecting the black community. Meanwhile, Rosewood starred the ever handsome and charming Morris Chestnut, making it another win for the black community as it joined a list of the new shows starring black men, those of which served in defeating the stereotype that they can only be the funny sidekick or street thug.

4. The world is introduced to Tidal

After making headway as a new music streaming service that would allow subscribers into the musical thoughts and minds of artists such as Jay Z, Beyoncé, Kanye West, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and more, Tidal held its first branded concert as a way to celebrate its growing success—a concert that became known as the Bey & Nicki show as they teamed to perform their hit, "Feelin' Myself."

5. Straight Outta Compton was unapologetically real

The bibliographical film about the World's Most Dangerous Group, NWA, introduced us to the era of gangsta rap. Ice Cube and Dr. Dre both allowed us all to reminisce in the artists of the '90s on the West Coast, propelled the release of Dr. Dre's 2015 Grammy-Nominated album, Compton, served as a prologue to the upcoming Tupac biopic and covered the issue of police brutality against black Americans, that of which is still plaguing us now.

6. Kendrick Lamar garners 11 Grammy nominations

After being snubbed by the Grammys in 2013, this year, Kendrick went on to release a new album, To Pimp a Butterfly. The album includes the socially-conscious and black uplifting records, "The Blacker the Berry,""King Kunta" and the Grammy-nominated "Alright." Kendrick not only received the most Grammy nominations of the year, but showed that millennials can still make, listen and groove to socially conscious music.

7. John Boyega & Lupita Nyong'o star in the new Star Wars

Despite facing racial comments for being the protagonist in JJ Abrahams'Star Wars, English actor John Boyega made his American debut as Finn in The Force Awakens and gracefully ignored any negative comments about his role. After her Oscar win in 2014, Lupita Nyong'o also starred in the episode 8 of the Star Wars installments, where she, like John, has received critical acclaim for her performance.

8. Serena Williams delivers another Serena Slam

Serena never usually disappoints, and this year was no exception. At Wimbledon, Serena won her fourth consecutive Grand Slam Championship—and her 21st championship overall. She also brought about the topic of race and body image in the world of sports, as criticism arose when it was discovered she receives less money than her white counterparts.

9. Zendaya stands up for natural-haired women

A photo posted by Zendaya (@zendaya) on

Zendaya shined in the year 2015, as she first fought back against former Fashion Police host Giuliana Rancic's comments about her dreads by posting an educational message on the history of natural hair for black girls on Instagram. She also showed major class when she gracefully accepted Rancic's apology.

10. ...She gets her own doll, too!

A photo posted by Zendaya (@zendaya) on

This and the premiere of her new show, K.C. Undercover, led to the release of her own Barbie Doll stylized with her famous Oscar look from earlier this year.

11. There's a new Hermione in the Harry Potter plays

There was, of course, controversy over the casting of a black Hermione for the new play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, when Noma Dumezweni was selected to play the female heroine of the series. However, Noma received HP author and creator J.K. Rowling's approval, as well as the approval of many fans who had always wanted to see more faces of color in the fantasy series.

12. Ava DuVernay receives her own Barbie doll

Director of the Oscar-nominated film, Selma, which is about the rise of the Civil Rights Movement and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., had a Barbie doll personalized after herself. We especially love that it also featured her signature dreadlocks!

13. The Apple Music commercials star Mary J. Blige, Taraji P. Henson and Kerry Washington

Just watch this one minute of greatness.

14. #TGIT, courtesy of Shonda Rhimes, continues

Because HTGAWM, Scandal and Grey's Anatomy truly define TGIT.

15. The Wiz Live! airs on NBC

Known as the black version of The Wizard of Oz originally starring Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, a revamped installment with a host of amazing celebs, like Queen Latifah, OITNB's Uzo Aduba, Mary J. Blige, and introducing Shanice Williams as the new Dorothy premiered this winter on NBC filled with a number of R&B/soul-infused musical numbers that both added to the legacy of The Wizard of Oz, as well as rounded out the year of black greatness in entertainment.

While this year was great for black entertainment, let's just make sure those windows of opportunity stay open in 2016. Tell us collegiettes, which moment was the best win for the black community this year?

What Your Most Commonly Used Emoji Says About You

Texting in the year 2015 is virtually unfeasible without the world’s most popular emoticon -- the emoji. This international sensation has become has not only become commonplace in modern communication, it has revolutionized the way we communicate with one another - so much so that Oxford Dictionary named the “Face with Tears of Joy” emoji as the 2015 Word of The Year. Emojis have undoubtedly been embraced as a nuanced form of expression, and while picture may say a thousand words, an emoji is far more telling. What does your most commonly used emoji say about you?

1. The “Face with Tears of Joy” emoji

As the 2015 word of the year, this emoji has become the modern day “LOL,” breaking language barriers everywhere to portray something with serious comedic value. Is this one of your most frequently used emojis? You’re not alone, about 20 percent of all emoji use in 2015 was of this emoji alone. Habitual users of this emoji know the importance of a good laugh, and believe in not taking life too seriously, regardless of the circumstances.

2. The “Heart Eyes” emoji

This emoji is perfect for the person who falls head-over-heels for everyone and everything. Frequent users of this emoji may be easy to please, but make no mistake -- their amiable attitude and puppy-dog eyes are their trick to getting their way.

3. The “Unamused” emoji

Rather than a face of despair or anger, this emoji is unmistakably used to portray dissatisfaction. With its blatant eye roll and slight dash of disappointment, this emoji is the go-to for those who are “so done” with everything.

4. The “Smirking Face” emoji

With its multiple connotations, this sly-smiled emoji is arguably the most flirty and devilish emoji out there. Designed to create social awkwardness, this precarious emoji was adopted by Snapchat to express that that you are the particular contact’s Best Friend. However he or she is not your Best Friend. This emoji goes much deeper than simply Snapchat though, users who frequent this emoji are cunning, mischievous and daring, to say the least.

5. The “Kissing Face” emoji

Fun and flirty or sweet and endearing, the “kissing face” emoji is a fan favorite that can be as potentially flirtatious as it is innocuous. Kissing face emoji fans have mastered the art of being affectionate, without being overly emotional.

6. The “Sobbing” emoji

The quintessential emoji of college life, the “sobbing’ emoji is indicative of the trials and tribulations of everyday life -- frequent users of this emoji are no strangers to situational irony, as they often turn to the comedic relief of emoticons to mask their shortcomings.

7. The “Raised Hands” emoji

As the universal emoji for the celebration of success, the “raised hands” emoji has been used everywhere to celebrate mighty and minor victories alike. Frequent users of this emoji are optimists, who seek the silver lining, and a reason to raise their hands in every situation.

8. The “Praying Hands” emoji

Used more often to express gratitude and count blessings than in an actual religious context, the “praying hands” emoji is often used to supplement the infamous term #blessed in efforts to describe how truly blessed you are. Those who often use the praying hands emoji understand that things are often not in our control, and are left to prayers and luck instead. This emoji is the closest way of saying “fingers crossed!”

11. The “Information Desk Person” emoji

Believe it or not, the hand of the girl in this emoji is positioned to expresses helpfulness, as if to ask "how may I help you?" Somehow, American culture has transformed the seemingly innocuous “information desk person” emoji into a sassy, feminine icon used to proclaim fabulousity. Frequent users for this emoji are known for their unapologetic sarcasm and enviable self-confidence. *Flips hair*

12. The “Weary Face” emoji

The “weary face emoji” says “I have a 10-page paper due at midnight and I have yet to start” or “I lost my wallet for the third time this week…this is getting ridiculous.” With its closed eyes and open, downturned mouth, this is the exemplary emoji for the over-anxious worry wart, who is constantly distraught or in a state of panic -- a feeling all of us collegiettes can relate to.

13. The “Relieved Face” emoji

The “relieved face” emoji is the most non-confrontational emoji out there. Contrary to the “weary face” emoji, the “relieved face” emoji is for the calm and collected collegiette who remains cool and content no matter what. Happy but not over the top, this emoji is aloof yet irreproachable, much like its frequent users.

14.The "Thumbs Up" emoji

An ubiquitous sign for approval, the thumbs up emoji is indicative of a job well done, or general agreement. Frequent users of this emoji have a distinctive desire to please and comply with others, and have no shame in giving credit where it's due for a job well done!

15. "The Face With Stuck-Out Tongue and Winking Eye” emoji

With its simultaneous wink and stuck-out tongue, this cheerful and jovial emoji is a favorite amongst self-proclaimed comedians and light-hearted minds everywhere. This emoji is one of the most used in the emoji arsenal of the person who can take a joke as easily as they can dish one out as well as find the funny side of everything.

16. The "Fire" emoji

Despite being characterized in the “nature” section of the emoji keyboard, this emoji is commonly used to describe something or someone (colloquially) hot as well as accompany the wildly popular 2015 term “lit” - meaning a favorable or amusing situation. Those who commonly use this emoji are either thrill-seeking, fun people or rappers trying to describe their mixtape.

17. The "Red Heart"emoji

It’s quite endearing that the most used emoji on Instagram is the red heart emoji. As the classic emoticon for expressing love, admiration and appreciation, the red heart emoji has been used on Instagram over half a million times in various captions and comments worldwide. The fact that this is the most commonly used emoji is quite telling of its users, the people who desire to share their love of something, somewhere or someone.

The Disney Princesses’ New Year’s Resolutions

$

The Disney princesses are many things: brave, strong, kind and timeless. However, they’re not perfect. Just because they’re living happily ever after doesn’t mean there isn’t room for self-improvement in their lives! Here’s what our favorite Disney princesses hope to accomplish in 2016.

Ariel: Go vegan.

When Ariel became human, she insisted that her castle provide her with vegetarian options. However, she was horrified when she looked closely at her soy sauce label and saw it included anchovy paste. Who knows what other seemingly innocuous foods might include fish? This year, Ariel will switch to an all-vegan diet to avoid the possibility of accidentally consuming her best friend, Flounder.

Snow White: Spend more time in the sun.

At her last medical checkup, Snow White learned that having skin as white as snow might be an indication she has a vitamin D deficiency. Her doctor recommended she get out of the dark, enchanted forest and into the sun. This year she’s planning on getting a sunroom installed into the castle. Maybe she’ll even get a tan!

Belle: Get through Proust’s In Search of Lost Time.

We all know about Belle’s affection for books. She’s already gotten through all the Harry Potter books, the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the available books in the Game of Thrones series. Now she wants to go back to her French roots and tackle this seven-volume French masterpiece. After spending so much time in a small provincial town, Belle could use some complex Modernist literature.

Tiana: Get a good review from Gordon Ramsay.

The Princess and the Frog ends with this heroine finally starting her own restaurant, Tiana’s Palace. If you’re like Tiana and love watching Hell’s Kitchen, you’re familiar with its host, the culinary curmudgeon Gordon Ramsay. Because Tiana’s a smart businesswoman, she’s looking for international acclaim by getting this Scottish chef’s positive endorsement.

Pocahontas: Join an NGO.

Pocahontas knows all too well what it’s like for strangers to come in and interfere with your community. This year, she’s interested in joining a non-governmental organization (or NGO), because many of these nonprofit organizations do the opposite: travel to help developing countries. Considering Pocahontas’s interest in nature, she’ll probably volunteer to work with a program focused on helping the environment, like the World Wildlife Fund or Greenpeace.

Cinderella: Host weekly girls’ nights.

Although she has Prince Charming, Cinderella has been feeling lonely. She recently figured out her problem: all of her friends are mice and birds. This year, Cinderella vows to chat up her royal cabinet and start going to parties in hopes of making some close (human) friends. As nice as it is to have rodents who do your work for you, nothing can replace a tight-knit group of girl friends.

Jasmine: Practice dancing once a day.

In the past few decades, several Disney movies like Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King have been adapted into Broadway musicals and Aladdin is the latest movie to follow this trend. With Princess Jasmine gracing the Great White Way, she'll have to practicing her dancing and listen to plenty of show tunes to stay on point. Right now she’s Spotifying the original cast recording of Kismet: A Musical Arabian Night, a 1953 Broadway musical.

Mulan: Write a memoir.

Mulan didn’t wait around for a prince to save her—she dressed up as a man to bring honor to her family and ended up with an incredible story about how far bravery and resourcefulness can take you. Now that Mulan is back with her family, everyone keeps asking about that time the emperor bowed to her. She wants to get started on a memoir so that by this time next year she’ll be on the top of the New York Times Best Seller list.

Aurora: Stop taking power naps.

There’s nothing wrong with taking a 20-minute nap to energize yourself. Aurora, however, can’t seem to shake her habit of oversleeping and tends to wake up from her naps several days later. This year, Aurora wants to get eight hours of sleep each night so she’s not tempted to sleep during the day and potentially miss her princess duties.

Rapunzel: Take self defense classes.

One of Rapunzel’s most prized possessions is her frying pan—it’s a helpful weapon when it comes to warding off enemies. However, recently, Eugene Fitzherbert (better known as Flynn Rider) wanted to make scrambled eggs but couldn’t find the frying pan. That's because Rapunzel needed it for protection. Her resolution is to learn how to defend herself without kitchen appliances so that Eugene can enjoy his breakfast.

Merida: Learn how to juggle fire.

Like many people, Merida wants to use the New Year to learn a new skill. However, she’s already adept in archery and swordplay. She has also become an expert in juggling her royal responsibilities. So Merida figures she’ll pick up juggling fire because, well, why not? She’s certainly brave enough (see what we did there?).

Elsa: Sign up for anger management classes.

Disney recently introduced two of its newest princesses in the movie Frozen. Throughout the movie, Elsa finds it hard to control her magical ability of creating ice and snow. This year, she’s going to start attending anger management classes to prevent any further accidental incidences of harm against her sister, Princess Anna.

If these princesses are able to stick to their resolutions, their happy endings might turn into “even more happily ever after.” Until it’s time for 2017 resolutions…

Can’t get enough of the Disney princesses? Check out what the Disney princesses would be like in college!

The 11 BEST Shirtless Celebrity Moments of 2015

$

Is it just us, or did a lot happen in 2015? The pop culture world took us on a wild ride, and the best photos from the past year are, of course, the shirtless ones. Much to our joy, a lot of celebs stripped down to their skivvies this year. These are our favorite shirtless celeb photos—they're obvs NSFW.

1. Chelsea Handler

To nobody's surprise, Chelsea Handler is a huge supporter of the #freethenipple movement. Her Instagram is full of topless shots, and her account has even been suspended before. This one makes the list because she's the only person we know who can pull off this look.

2. Tom Daley

Shout out to our favorite Olympian! In October, he announced his impending nuptials, and we were 80 percent jealous and 20 percent excited for him. We secretly can't stop staring at this shot... why can't we like a photo more than once?

3. Chris Pratt

Remember when Chris Pratt suddenly went from lumpy Andy Dwyer to the hella hot Guardian of the Galaxy we see before us? Yup, that happened.

4. Nick Jonas

We blinked, and all of a sudden Nick Jonas wasn't just another boy band member. He became a full time dime basically overnight!

5. Justin Bieber

Who knew that in 2015 we would all become Beliebers? This photo has got us saying "Sorry" for ever doubting the Beibs.

6. Rihanna

Rihanna is kind of the queen, and her Esquire photo shoot is only proving that point. (On a side note, have you guys seen her movie Home? Definitely cried.)

7. Zac Efron/ Seth Rogen

You don't need a hi-res image to see all of Zac Efron's perfectly defined abs. Why did we choose this photo? Because of the additional Seth Rogen shirtlessness. #sexyandtheyknowit

8. Miley Cyrus

Miley is known for her risque Instas, but this one really took the cake. When is this girl not busy posting topless photos??

9. Drake

Okay, Jimmy Brooks, we see you. From Degrassi to Dreamboat, amirite?

10.  Cara Delevingne

Another #freethenipple supporter, Delevingne did us all a favor when she posed for model Kate Moss in this stunning shoot.

11. Kendall Jenner

We love when the Kardashians get real, and Kendall's nip-baring look and toothy grin are evidence that she can let loose and just have fun, too.

8 Reasons Why Female Artists Dominated the Music Scene in 2015

2015 was the year for female artists in every genre, from pop to country. Here's how our favorite songstresses totally dominated:

1. Adele hit the scene with a new album

We don't even have to say much, because everyone was buzzing about Adele in 2015. Her record 25 has spent 5 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and total sales for the album now exceed 5 million. "Hello" was also the first song to ever sell 1 million downloads in the first week of its release.

2. Taylor Swift's 1989 continues to slay

Despite being released in 2014, 1989 was the best-selling album of 2015 before Adele's 25, making it a great year for Taylor. Taylor also made No. 1 on DoSomething.org's Celebs Gone Good list for the fourth year in a row. This year, she donated $50,000 to a young girl who had to miss her show due to leukemia treatments.

3. Fifth Harmony Wins Group of the Year

Fifth Harmony was hot this year, that's for certain. They received the Group of the Year honor at Billboard Women in Music 2015 ceremony. Not to mention the girl power in "Worth It" is strong, and hit No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

4. Rachel Platten is 2015's breakout star

"Fight Song" cemented Rachel Platten as a breakout star in 2015, an anthem that boasts female power in every lyric. The song peaked the top 10 in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Platten's debut album, Wildfire, comes out on January 1, and then she'll be going out for her first headlining tour.

5. Pitch Perfect 2

The aca-awesome Bellas were back in Pitch Perfect 2, which made $69.2 million in the final box office numbers. After the film, Hailee Steinfeld (who plays Emily) also came into her own as a female musician with her single "Love Myself."

6. Demi Lovato wins the Rulebreaker Award

In 2015, Demi released "Cool for the Summer," and also accepted Billboard's Rulebreaker award at the Women in Music 2015. Her inspiring acceptance speech touched on girl power, grade school bullies, and how that plays into who she is as a person and a musician.

7. Women in Music was broadcast on TV

Speaking of the ceremony, for the first time in history, Women in Music was broadcast on television in 2015. Let's hope this is a part of a trend for more media coverage of women's awards in the upcoming year!

8. Missy Elliot wins Innovator of the Year

At the Women in Music event, Missy Elliot was also awarded the Innovator of the Year award, and used her speech to empower all women to continue to be creative.

This year was a strong one for female music artists, with Lady Gaga also named as Woman of the Year by Billboard, and accolades given to Selena Gomez, Loretta Lynn, Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes, Tori Kelly and Kelsea Ballerini, along with 50 female music executives. Let's keep this momentum going into the new year!

We can all agree that a hair accessory could make or break a hairstyle, but sometimes the best looking headbands, clips and bobby pins are the most expensive. However, with a little crafting, you can create your own for a much cheaper price! You’ll get a gorgeous piece to add to your #ootd and bragging rights!

1. Delicate pearl bow

This bow can be worn on its own or on a thin headband, and looks clean and elegant either way! The process is a lot more simple than it appears, and you'll be sure to receive plenty of compliments on it. Shelterness can show you how to create your own with step-by-step images.

2. Knotted T-shirt headband

Sugar Bee Crafts walks you through making a simple knot with T-shirt yarn and creating a headband that goes with anything! This could be worn with a casual outfit or dressed up for date night. Make something that costs a pretty penny at the mall for a lot less.

3. Customized color bobby pins

Bobby pins always show when they're in your hair, so you might as well embrace the fact and color coordinate with them! Thankfully, Club Chica Circle proves that coating the pins with your favorite shade of nail polish will do the trick. You can create alternating colors or a whole set of glittering gold pins to tame your mane.

4. Reinvented bobby pins

If you liked the previous accessory and want to take it a step further, Free People knows how! Use a whole set of pins together to create a pattern or image when lined up in your lucious locks, also using nail polish!

5. No-sew headband

9 New Year’s Resolutions Every Recent Grad Should Make

Ah, New Year’s: the time when the calendar turns and we’re presented with a brand new, completely blank slate. It’s time for a new you! It’s your moment to shine! It’s going to be your year!

Are we laying it on too thick? (Sorry!) While the concept of New Year’s resolutions can be a little overdone, the beginning of a new year can be a great time to start working on some of the goals you’ve thought about before but haven’t gotten around to yet. Need some help narrowing down your list of priorities? Look no further than this handy roundup of New Year’s resolutions for the recent graduette!

1. Find a workout you love

It can be hard to stay active after graduating from college—you don’t have a free gym at your constant disposal, you’re busy and stressed at your new job and you have to squeeze every last minute out of each day to get everything done. How are you supposed to fit exercise into your day?

The first step you should take is finding a workout you actually enjoy. Try ClassPass (available in most major cities!): For $99 a month, you get to try different classes at studios that are in the ClassPass network, allowing you to try a variety of classes to see what works best for you. You can also check out your favorite athletic apparel retail stores to find classes; lululemon and Reebok FitHub locations often offer free fitness classes!

“I never liked working out much but decided that I needed to get my butt in gear after feeling sluggish and gross for a few months,” says Amy Larson, a recent graduate from the University of Minnesota who works in merchandising. “I saw a flyer for Zumba classes and decided to try one. After that I was hooked, and I’m even looking to become a certified Zumba teacher because I love it so much!”

Many fitness studios will let you try classes at discounted rates (or even free!) before you commit to buying a membership so you can make sure you really love it before committing.

You can also try unconventional ways of getting your move on, like salsa or ballroom classes. They might not be set up like traditional fitness classes, but you'll get your heart rate up and meet new people.

2. Make a monthly budget—and stick to it

Having a budget may sound like the epitome of a boring adulthood, but the reality is that you are an adult now, and budgets don't have to be boring! With a budget, you'll know exactly where your money is going each month instead of praying your card isn't rejected every time you go to Target.

The other perk of knowing how much money you actually have? It might help you eliminate that guilt you feel when you splurge on something you want but don't necessarily need. “Before I made a budget, I felt terrible literally anytime I spent money,” Amy says. “Now that I have a budget, I don’t feel bad spending that budgeted money. I give myself $50 every month for clothes, and when I use that money to buy a new shirt or cute boots, I don’t feel guilty because I budgeted for it!”

Check out mobile apps and websites like Mint, which automatically updates your earnings and spending when you connect the account to your bank and credit card accounts, andLearnVest, a resource you can use to create and manage your financial plan. Which brings us to our next point…

3. Aim to save up at least $1,000 in 2016

Yes, we’re talking about money again. Now that you’ve graduated and are either job searching or already working a 9-to-5, it’s important to start thinking about your future and how you can plan for it. A big majority of that planning involves putting away some money for emergencies, like when you end up with a large medical bill, your car breaks down or another unexpected event occurs. Things are going to happen in your life that will come out of nowhere and cost a lot of money, so make sure that you’re prepared!

“It’s a good idea to put money aside for a ‘rainy day’ even if you don't feel like it,” says Alexandra Patterson, a recent graduate from the University of Pittsburgh. “The next time your car breaks down, you'll feel much better that you don't have to call your parents for money.” Your parents will also appreciate you for that!

Amy suggests starting with a grand as a first savings goal, a tip she learned from taking a financial class through community education. “In the class I took they recommended trying to save up $1,000 for emergencies that may happen in your life,” Amy says. “Keep that money stored away in your bank account—or even a separate bank account!—for true emergencies. And no, new boots that you saw and ‘just have to have’ are not an emergency.”

Once you have this cushion for emergencies, you’ll feel much more at ease about the future.

4. Cook for yourself at least a few times a week

It’s all too tempting to plop down on the couch and order takeout after a long day of work, but for a cheaper and healthier option, resolve to start cooking for yourself. It will get easier and faster with time—and you might even learn to love it!

The first step is making sure you have the right tools, which is something you can accomplish pretty cheaply.

“When I decided to cook for myself, I went to secondhand stores, rummage sales and thrift shops and found a lot of great cooking equipment for cheap,” says Lizzie Prince, a recent graduate of the College of St. Scholastica working in finance. “Just make sure to wash everything before you use it, of course!”

Then, look online for recipes to try, or even ask your parents to compile a cookbook of all your favorite homemade meals. And don't expect to be a pro chef right away! “Just remember that it’s a learning process and that it’s better (and cheaper) to start with simple recipes,” Lizzie says.

Don't have time during the week to cook? Use your weekends wisely and cook enough food to last the workweek!

5. Volunteer

Resolve to give back to your community more this year by volunteering. You could organize clothing drives, work at an animal shelter or serve at a soup kitchen—the possibilities are endless! Volunteering connects you to your city, which can be a huge plus if you just moved to a new city after graduation.

“I had to move to a whole new state for my new job, and at first it was pretty lonely,” says Annie Lane, a recent graduate from Emory University who just moved to Florida for her job. “It’s hard to make friends when you’re out of college and on your own. One of the ways that I’ve found to meet new people is volunteering at my local animal shelter. Not only do I get to play with puppies and kittens all day, I get to participate in my community and meet new people in the process!”

Check out websites like VolunteerMatch or the American Red Cross for opportunities in your area.

6. Stay connected with old friends

After you’ve graduated, it can be hard to keep up with all your college friends. This year, resolve to keep in touch with the ones that matter the most to you through more than just Facebook or Twitter.

“I moved back home for work after college, so I don’t get to see my college friends that often,” says Katie Sullivan, a recent graduate from St. Cloud State University working in marketing. “We decided that we would all keep in touch via snail mail, and we have started writing each other letters and sending each other cards. It’s fun to get actual mail; plus, it has helped keep our relationships strong!”

If you want to go the snail-mail route, you can even take turns sending each other fun care packages. Or, schedule weekly or bimonthly phone calls or video chat dates with your friends.

“Actually hearing your friends’ voices and seeing their faces is way more fun than texting,” Katie says. “There are so many resources out there to video chat now, too—choose one like Google Hangouts so you can talk to multiple friends at once!”

7. Disconnect at a certain time each day

We know we just told you to stay connected, but this year, resolve to get off your phone and email by a certain time each day as well.

“One of my former professors recommended cutting off all email correspondence by 6 p.m. each day,” Katie says. “While sometimes that’s hard to do, especially if you have a job that requires you to be available a lot, it’s a good concept to practice to keep yourself sane and take a little time for yourself.”

Set a time for yourself each day for your different devices and forms of electronic correspondence: Maybe you stop checking your emails at 7 p.m. each night, but you can watch Netflix until 9 p.m. and check Facebook on your phone until 10 p.m. Whatever times you choose, make sure that you’re giving yourself at least a full hour of screen-free time before bed in order to fully relax before you hit the hay.

“I like to read and listen to quiet music in the hour before I go to bed each night,” Amy says. “I turn off all my electronics, and it’s very peaceful. It helps me recharge and has also helped me sleep better at night!”

8. Find a career mentor

As a recent graduate, you may not have your dream job at the moment—but you're likely on your way to achieving it! To help you think about the next steps of your career path, resolve to find a mentor. Your mentor can give you advice related to your field and tell you how you can make the most of what you're doing now to reach your goals. Choose someone whose current job is related to the field you aspire to be in—even better if the mentor has your dream job!

If you don't already have a mentor in mind, there are still tons of resources that you can look to. Look through the alumni database at your alma mater or look to other professional organizations that promote the field you want to work in.

9. Go outside of your dating comfort zone

Dating after college is probably really different than what you’re used to, and it can be easy to get stuck in a rut. This year, vow to break out of your normal realm of dating and try something new, whether that's online dating or using apps like Tinder and Zoosk.

“I was interested in dating, but as a recent transplant to my city and with all my time taken by work, I didn’t know where to start,” Annie says. “I was hesitant about trying online dating, but discovered that it’s not weird at all—so many of my friends have online dating profiles, too! I’ve gone on a few really fun dates, too; it’s a great way to meet people!”

Be yourself and have fun with it, but most of all make sure that you’re staying safe when meeting people online.

Above all, when you’re making resolutions this year, make them achievable and be honest with yourself about what you want to accomplish. To keep yourself on track, keep a log of your resolutions and how you’re working to achieve them, even if it takes writing out the short-term goals you’ll need to meet in order to reach those long-term ones. It’ll help you hold yourself accountable and have the best 2016 possible!

Kim Kardashian's Resolution is to Do the Splits in 2016

Kim Kardashian has amassed a global empire of fame and fortune, and she's ready to set more goals for 2016. Gotta give Kim snaps for never quitting while ahead. She lists only six resolutions on her website for this upcoming year despite stating that she doesn't really believe in the New Year tradition: "I think setting little goals every month is productive and long-term goals (like saving money or learning a new language) are important too. But I don't need a new calendar year to do that." With that little disclaimer, read on to hear about Kim's resolutions.

The first one on her list is to shed her baby weight, after she gave birth earlier this year. She reveals her next resolutions are very family-oriented: finish remodeling the Kardashian-West home and plan a West family vacation.

Unsurprisingly, Kim is, as always, staying conscious of her followers and is already planning new treats for her fans. She continues, "I'd like to do some really cool photo shoots for my Web site. I want to do a couple more fun weekend trips with my Twitter followers that I haven't met yet." Count us in, Kim.

Last but not least, Kim threw in a pretty random but fun resolution. "Oh, I also want to learn how to do the splits LOL!" she wrote.

What are the other Kardashian sisters' resolutions for 2016? They range from low-key to ambitious. Kourtney posted on her website/app that her top goals are to "continue on the workout mission that I started this year" as well as "allow myself to feel my emotions." Kendall is taking herself a little less seriously, informing fans through her app that her resolution is to "chill out more." Meanwhile, the youngest Kardashian, Kylie, is hoping to launch a full makeup line and expand upon her much-hyped Lip Kit. It's a lot to handle in a year, but far from impossible given Kylie's accomplishments to date.

Love them or hate them, the Kardashian ladies have done a lot in 2015 alone—so we have no doubt they'll accomplish all their goals for the new year, and more!

Have you ever wanted to sleep on the go? Thanks to the Hypnos hoodie, you can now take a nap anytime, anywhere.

The hoodie has an inflatable, ergonomic neck pillow so you can grab some shut-eye essentially wherever you are. You can currently purchase the hoodie via a Kickstarter campaign, which had goals to raise $30,000 by January 11, and has already beat that goal by several thousands of dollars, because who doesn't want to take an instant nap? According to the Kickstarter, the hoodie is designed for "creatives, travelers, commuters and anybody who has a moment to take a rest."

The company tested the hoodie by wearing it for two years on cross-country flights, according to cofounder Josh Woodle. The inflatable pillow inserts are meant to be taken out before the hoodie is washed, and the company will replace them for $5 if customers have any difficulties. The pillows also inflate and deflate in 3 seconds, giving the wearer immediate access to a cozy nap.

The target demographic for Hynpos hoodie? You guessed it, millennials, who probably need to sleep 24/7.

The hoodie is priced at $89 for the relaxed fit pullover, $99 for the fitted silhouette, $119 for relaxed fit or fitted zip-up, and $139 for the woven jacket. They come with a lifetime warranty.

If you're constantly falling asleep in between class and work, this may be exactly what you need in your life right now. Napping is a necessary life skill you can put on your resume, right?

5 Small Acts That Make a Big Impact On the Job

Go big or go home, right? Well sometimes that cliché is dead wrong, especially when it comes to your job. There are several different things you can do at your job to get noticed, but not all of it has to involve pom poms and fireworks. Maybe you feel awkward “showing off” to your boss or coworkers, or simply want to get noticed but don’t want to be too obvious. Turns out: you’re in luck! There are so many things you can do on the job that will not only make you stand out, but also make a big impact in the workplace.

1. Dress the part

This one may seem obvious, but dressing appropriately for your work environment is key. Whether you’re the coffee girl, an intern or an actual employee, dressing like you belong in the workplace is the first step to being taken seriously. Tamara Peters, a career development specialist at Rutgers, says that what one wears is a big clue to who they are as a person. It influences how you perform on the job, too. “What you wear also affects your confidence and the more confident you are at work, the better. Pay attention to what other people are wearing in your office and follow suit,” Peters says. “As the common phrase goes, “Dress for [the] position you hope to have.”

2. Make sure to always be on time

Punctuality is key. It shows that you’re dedicated to your workplace and can handle the simple yet sometimes hard-to-achieve responsibility of getting to work on time. Tom Dezell, author of Networking for the Novice, Nervous, or Naive Job Seeker, says that your colleagues and bosses value reliability. So by establishing a pattern of being on time as well as having excellent attendance, you’re showing yourself as someone who can be trusted. By being on time, you can also ensure that you’re giving yourself every opportunity to improve in the workplace as well as making yourself available for new and more important tasks.

3. Accept that you have weaknesses

Everyone wants to be the best at their job, but unfortunately you cannot master everything you need to know. If you realize you have a certain weakness or someone points it out to you, don’t feel bad—there’s always room for improvement. According to Dezell, one should always keep moving forward. “Accept that you have weaknesses, then take quiet steps to improve them,” Dezell says. “Find a co-worker who is strong in that area and ask about his or her strategies.” This way you show that you are willing to keep learning, while also gaining knowledge and networking with your coworkers.

4. Be solution-oriented

When something goes wrong, it’s an obvious reaction to feel upset. In the workplace, it is especially important to keep your calm and try to fix what is wrong. You don't want to push the problem on your supervisor, but you do want to keep them in the loop; let them know what the issue is, but be ready to present next steps. “It’s tempting to meet with your supervisor and tell him/her that something isn’t working. But think from your supervisor’s perspective and what he/she is trying to accomplish.” Peters says. “When presenting an issue try to also present possible solutions. They may not be implemented, but you’re taking the time and demonstrating that you have the ability to think strategically.” This way you avoid all the negativity and instead are trying to move the job forward. It is an added bonus to show yourself off as someone who can solve problems instead of just dwelling on them.

5. Think about subtle self-promotion

You never know who in your workplace you’re going to be running into. Whether you’re at the office, in the building or even at a social gathering, anyone important to the company can show up any time. Peters advises you to always be ready to interact with someone important and to make sure to practice your introduction: “Keep it simple. Start with your name, then your title and department and a few sentences about how what you do contributes to the organization… you never know the next time you’ll run into, or meet someone new.” By keeping yourself prepared, it’s possible that you could impress this person enough to open more doors throughout the company.

These are just five of the very many small gestures you can do to impress your boss and show that you are dedicated to your job and the company's goals. They may seem insignificant at first glance, but the reality is, it's the small things eventually add up to very big opportunities.

15 Signs You're Really Taking Advantage of This Whole Winter Break Thing

There's nothing like kicking back, relaxing and maxing all cool after a strenuous semester. Even though spring semester, internships, work and a whole blizzard of reponsibilities are just around the corner, now is the time to enjoy winter break. For some, this means sipping on cocoa by the fire and reflecting on a year of blessings. For others, this is YOUR time. Roll out the red carpet and sound the trumpets. The queens of the castle are home and ready to really take advantage of winter break.

1. The pants are OFF.

Egg(nog)'s out, legs out! Am I right?

2. Every day is "groutfit" day.

Blazers and blouses are a thing of the past. Wear clothes considered acceptable in the public eye? No, thank you.

3. Your couch is custom fit.

The sofa is basically memory-foam now. There was a time when you moved…to plug your phone charger into the wall.

4. Writing feels like a foreign ritual.

You haven't taken notes in weeks, and the fact that your handwriting looks like a kindergartener found a pen after drinking four espressos just confirms that. Who knew adding to the grocery list could be an advanced exercise?

5. Your Pinterest game is too strong.

Martha Stewart would be proud. With all this extra time on your hands, getting crafty has never been easier! Or at least planning to be crafty…

6. You have on-call service for your favorite foods.

Dining halls are out of sight and out of mind. Being home for the holidays means enduring a marathon of your favorite foods. Mother, room service! (Okay, maybe not to that extent.)

7. You've got the power.

Remote control? Yours. Right to cuddling the dog? Yours. First dibs on the car? Yours. Your siblings are still in high school. They don't understand the struggle of inaccessibility.

8. Becoming a recluse never felt so right.

Immediately after catching up with your hometown friends and childhood besties, the transformation commenced. You are now a makeup-less creature, most likely nesting in the dark with a Snuggie.

9. Every day is a spa day.

All those lotions and facial samples from Sephora are finally getting their time in the sun. Hour-long showers are the norm. Winter break isn't exactly primetime for being eco-friendly.

10. Doing laundry is out of the question.

You don't care who does it, but it sure as heck is not going to be you.

11. You're a film and television connoisseur.

Netflix, Hulu, OnDemand…the capactiy for binge watching is never-ending. And you will watch it all.

12. You don't remember what chores are.

How do the dishes get from the sink to the shelves? Where does all the dust go? Who tidies the living room? Mice? You're far too busy avoiding all responsibilities to actually figure it out.

13. You smell like a Christmas cookie candle.

The oven is a nonstop cookie sheet station and the only destination is your mouth.

14. Social media is your only connection to the outside world.

Your thumbs are in the early stages of arthritis from all the scrolling.

15. You miss school…kind of.

Relaxing 24/7 is fantastic and all, but you can't wait to get back to the grind. Until then, bring on the sweatpants and holiday leftovers!

How to Talk to Your Parents About Paying for College

$

0

The time has finally come. After touring countless college campuses, spending hours writing your application essays and waiting anxiously for those acceptance letters, there’s only one thing left to do: have “the money talk” with your ‘rents. Although talking about how you’re going to pay for college with your family may be awkward, it’s an important part of the college process that too many high school students overlook. Luckily, we’ve talked to collegiettes and experts alike and broken it down for you step-by-step!

Why it’s important

Paying for college is one of the biggest investments you’ll make in your lifetime. As pre-collegiettes, it can be hard to navigate financial terms, paperwork and other important information when you haven’t had to deal with it before. Even if you’re planning on paying for college on your own, your parents can serve as a valuable resource to guide you through the financial process. However, you’ll never know what advice or input they have to offer if you don’t ask.

“When it came to college apps, my biggest mistake was not talking to my parents about money before applications were due,” says Rebecca Shinners, a senior at Boston University. “I just assumed that because I’d worked so hard in high school, we’d be able to make it work. But when I was accepted to my dream school, my parents sat me down and told me I couldn’t go [because it was too expensive]. I was hysterical.”

Unfortunately, Rebecca’s story is all too common. Many high school seniors get so caught up in the admissions process that they fail to consider the financial impact that going to college will have on themselves or their family.

“[Having the money talk with your parents is important] so that [you] don’t waste time looking at colleges that have no shot of giving [you] the money you’ll need,” says Scott Weingold, the cofounder of College Planning Network. “Why waste time and create a lot of stress and frustration by looking at schools, falling in love and then finding out there’s just no way it’s ever going to happen due to financial constraints?”

Talking to your parents about your financial situation as early as possible can help prevent surprise or sadness later on.

Starting the conversation

Because talking about money isn’t always a light conversation, it’s important to bring it up at a time when your parents aren’t distracted and you have their full attention.

“There’s no ‘easy’ way [to start the conversation], but it has to be done and it should begin as early as [your] freshman or sophomore year at the latest,” Weingold says. “Both student and parent(s) need to be on the same page early on in this process so that when the student begins looking at schools, they are only looking at schools that have a good shot at meeting their financial ability.”

Whether they’ve mentioned the financial topic to you before or you’ve been handling the college application process on your own, ask your parents if they’re willing to set aside some time to sort things out with you. A simple, “Can we talk about college?” at the dinner table may be enough to break the ice.

Questions to ask

Once you have their attention, it’s important to be prepared with a few key questions. If it’s easier for you to remember questions by writing them out, jot them down on a Post-it and bring the note with you. Start with something broad, such as, “Have you thought about our financial situation in terms of college at all?” Getting an idea of how much preparing they’ve done can give you an idea of how much preparing you still need to do.

Your parents may tell you that they’ve set aside money in a college savings fund. If so, it’s perfectly okay to ask how much they’ve saved. You can compare this amount to the cost of attendance listed for each school on the College Board website, and then get an idea of what schools are in your range financially. However, don’t be daunted by the giant price tag of your dream school—there are plenty of financial aid and scholarship options to pursue!

You might be unsure about whether or not your parents have started a college savings fund. If so, your next question may sound something like, “Have you thought about how I am going to pay for college?” This is an important question to ask because it can result in a variety of answers. Maybe they’ve saved enough to pay for all of your college costs, or maybe they’ve saved for a portion and are planning on having you cover the rest. Or you may be financially independent and planning on paying for college yourself. In any case, you’ll want to ask them about taking out loans as well. It’s important to focus on schools that are in your range financially, “whether through cost or through a historically high financial-aid-awarding process,” Weingold says.

Regardless of your financial situation, it’s important to make sure everyone involved is on the same page. Once you know who is paying for college and you have an idea of how much each person involved will contribute, you can move forward with important financial aid documents.

Handling financial aid documents

Nearly all college counselors, admissions experts and teachers will tell you that the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is the most important financial aid document of the college application process since it’s an online application for federal financial aid.

“You can’t even be considered for aid unless you go through this process,” Weingold says.  “And even if you don’t think you’ll get [any aid], you can often times be very surprised – so always, always, always will out a FAFSA form, regardless of income. Some schools won’t give you merit-based aid unless you go through the process, [and] your situation may change, or you may have multiple students in school at the same time, which changes things [financially].”

By filling out the FAFSA, the government can get an idea of your family’s income and financial situation. They consider factors such as your personal income, your parents’ income, the amount of siblings you have and other factors in order to determine how much need-based aid you will receive.

“[Need-based aid] will be given if the student’s family income qualifies them for getting help to pay based on how much money their family makes,” says Michelle Podbelsek, a college counselor at College Counseling Associates.

You can begin filling out the FAFSA online now, and, depending on where you live, it may be due as early as March. The FAFSA website lists due dates according to each state. Ask your parents when they are available to help you complete the FAFSA, as it will require them to reference many important documents such as their income and tax records.

Once they’ve gathered their income and tax records, sit down and complete the FAFSA together so they can answer any questions you may have and confirm the information you’re entering (such as social security numbers). While it may seem like a daunting task at first, the whole form can be filled out in one sitting.

Aside from the FAFSA, there are other ways to get financial aid. The CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE is an online form available through the College Board website. By filling out the form, you can apply for nonfederal financial aid from over 400 colleges and scholarship programs.

These scholarships are a crucial element of the financial aid process. Unlike loans, scholarships do not have to be paid back.

“Scholarships are merit-based aid based on talents or academic achievements,” Podbelsek says. “If an applicant has high grades and/or test scores compared to the profile of that college, then the college may offer them merit aid to attract them to go there.”

As a high school student, there are several ways in which you can apply for scholarships. The CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE can help you find scholarships on a national level. A specific college may invite you to apply for specific programs after viewing your initial application. Additionally, your high school counselor can direct you towards scholarships available for local students.

Following up

Since college is paid for by semester or on an annual basis, it’s important to remember that the money talk isn’t a one-time conversation. Instead, be sure you’re communicating with your parents on a regular basis about any changes in your financial situation—such as a new job, the loss of a job, an increase in tuition costs, studying abroad, etc. The earlier you talk to them, the more time you have to plan ahead and avoid crises!

Once you’ve talked to your parents about your financial situation, college savings, the possibility of taking out loans and financial aid documents like the FAFSA, you should have a better idea about where you stand financially. As your acceptance letters begin to roll in and you move closer to a final college decision, you can have individual conversations about certain schools with your parents in terms of finances.

“Just keep the constant communication flowing,” Weingold says. “Possibly set up reoccurring ‘college’ meetings every month or two with [your] parents just to check in and to continue to operate on the same page.”

If you’re having trouble getting through to your parents after several attempts, don’t be afraid to reach out to a college counselor at school, who can help you answer many of the same questions and offer further suggestions for talking to your parents. While money is an important part of the college decision process, it shouldn’t hold you back from pursuing the school of your dreams. Best of luck out there, pre-collegiettes!

This is the Gym Like You Have Never Never Seen it Before

When it comes to comparing our reality to the wildlife for animals, we often only think of the habitat-infused fantasies seen by Cady in Mean Girls, such as in the human-populated environments of the mall or the school cafeteria. Well now, the Buff Dudes Channel on YouTube is showing how the animal kingdom is replicated right before our very eyes in everyone’s (not so) favorite place: the GYM!

The six-minute video parodies the fitness center as the common place where everyone there inherently plays a role often found in the wilderness life from the people who are just there to work out to the guys who are there to pick up girls to the women who are intimidatingly fit. Though we take our fitness routines seriously, it is pretty funny to think about what it is we really do at the gym; especially when portrayed in this way.

So where do you fit in in gym life?

Tinashe Talks Colorism, Racism & Sexism in the Music Industry

After the release of her positively-received R&B album, Aquarius in 2014, Tinashe—who is also a talented dancer, actress and model—is emerging as one of the hottest artists in the music industry. But, she has something to say about the business, which she often believes puts her and other black female entertainers into a corner.

“I think it comes from a place of ‘there is only room for one.’ Or there is only room for two. Again, the way I see it, obviously, is if a Black girl is winning—whether she is lightskin, darkskin, or any type of shade in-between, that should be a win for the Black community, period,” she says in an interview with xoNecole. “But it’s not necessarily always perceived as such. It’s like ‘Oh, she’s on the more lighter spectrum, so that is why she wins.’”

Tinashe adds that the way black female artists are treated greatly differs from that of their white female counterparts. “It’s just kind of ridiculous because there are like a hundred blonde, white actresses and leading ladies. There are a hundred rappers that all virtually look the same, sound the same, and dress the same and no one cares. But for some reason, when it comes to young women, they want to pit them against each other. There can’t be room [for us all]. There can’t be five Black girls winning. It’s weird.”

After coming off as one of the openers of Nicki Minaj’s The PinkPrint World Tour this past year, the singer is currently working on her next album, Joyride, to be released sometime next year, and hopefully, by that time, there will be a greater margin that allows for opportunity of female artists of color to emerge and expand.

7 Reasons Guys Actually Want to Be in a Relationship

When you go to college, you think you can expect at least one thing, based on the stories you’ve heard: The guys are going to be jerks, and all they’re going to want from you are drunken hook-ups. You think that the “walk of shame” is soon going to be a reality for yourself and all of your friends, and that your life is going to turn into that movie Friends with Benefits (the part before Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis get together, that is). But is all of that really true?

Here at HC, we think that the stereotype that all college guys are looking for random hook-ups is a giant misconception. To bust that myth, we talked to guys all over the country to find out the exact reasons why they want to be in a relationship (for real!).

1. They want comfort and companionship

Guys aren’t just some heartless robots who only want to hook up all the time—they get lonely, too!

“I didn’t know that I wanted a relationship until all of my roommates were in one,” says Tyler, a sophomore at the University of Florida. “When I’d see them with their girlfriends, I’d always be like, ‘Aw, that’s so nice. I want to spend time with someone like that.’”

Tyler says that it gets really lonely for guys when all they do is hang out with their friends or by themselves. He says that the companionship of a significant other, someone you can spend all the time in the world with, is really important to him.

“I started to find myself wanting to have company all the time,” Tyler says, “and I realized that it’s part of growing up, seeing that you want the company of a romantic partner.”

Guys aren’t that different from girls—they don’t want to be alone all the time. Sometimes, they want someone to snuggle up with and binge-watch Netflix movies–if any guy tells you this isn’t the case, he’s totally lying (or is an actual robot).

2. Being with someone is more emotionally fulfilling

It’s pretty logical to think that guys get lonely just like girls, but can’t they spend time with their friends and get their romance fix from random hook-ups or friends with benefits?

Jake, a junior at the University of New Hampshire, says that this balancing act is only fulfilling to a certain point.

“When it comes down to it, you’re going to sleep alone when it’s a random hook-up,” Jake says. “Even if she spends the night in your room and leaves the next morning or vice versa, you still don’t have that lazy time in bed together or even the comfort of knowing you can text her later and not feel stupid.”

Jake says that it’s a hard emotion to pinpoint, but casually hooking up with someone leaves you feeling much emptier than actually caring for someone. At a certain point, guys want to do the caring.

3. They think relationships just feel natural

You know that guy who always seems to have a girlfriend? And those girlfriends always seem to be long-term? Contrary to what movies and TV would have you believe about college, that’s actually not too uncommon. For some guys, being in a relationship just seems like the only option, the only thing that feels right.

“For me, it’s just a form of respect,” says Timmy, a recent graduate from Vanderbilt University. “If I’m going to hook up with a girl, I’m going to get her number, talk to her, ask her to dinner. Things like that always seem to lead to relationships for me.”

Chivalry is not dead, collegiettes! A lot of guys understand that it’s a sign of respect to get to know a girl before hooking up with her all the time (to which we have to say: DUH), and a lot of guys realize that if they enjoy talking to her and knowing her, and she feels the same, he should ask her to be his girlfriend.

4. They’d rather be a gentleman than a playboy

Some guys are just raised to be gentlemen (not playboys) and to want this sweet kind of relationship with women.

“It’s really important for me to be a gentleman,” says Timmy. “Being a gentleman means respecting women and knowing that they’re your equal. When I see women, I’m interested [in them] as my equals; I want to be their partner and their boyfriend.”

These are the kinds of guys we hear about in movies, huh? The ones who open the car door for you, pay on the first date and truly embody the chivalrous gentleman. Wouldn’t it be nice if they all just announced themselves, so we didn’t have to weed through the duds to find them?

5. They want physical intimacy

Let’s be honest, here—a lot of guys look forward to the physical aspect of relationships.

“I’m going to be pretty real with you and say that one of the benefits of having my girlfriend is that I know I’ll have sex on the weekends,” says Ryan*. “I love my girlfriend a lot, so don’t think I’m some kind of pig…It’s different with her because I’m hooking up with someone I care about and who I know cares about me.”

You know how we all value chemistry when we go on a date with someone? How we talk to our friends about how we really “clicked” with a person? Guys value relationships for the same reason…except instead of really wanting to click during conversations, they want to click when hooking up, too.

“I think a big reason why we click physically is because we click emotionally,” Ryan says, “so I like having a girlfriend because it makes that physical part of my life better.”

It’s a pretty universal feeling to want to be physical with someone you truly care about and trust—we can’t say we blame them, since we totally feel the same!

6. They want to be taken care of…

It’s something we see a lot, whether we’re doing it ourselves or we see one of our friends doing it—taking care of the boyfriend. We make him lunch, grab him groceries when he’s super swamped and help him out when he’s sick. This is definitely something guys value in their relationships.

“It’s not like I’m barking orders at my girlfriend, like ‘make me a sandwich woman,’ or anything,” Tyler says, “but the things she does for me are nice and appreciated.” He doesn’t actively seek out a girl who will do him favors, but when she does, he says that it’s definitely one of the benefits of being in a relationship with her.

7. …But they also want to take care of you

We all know that in relationships, there is a lot of give and take—guys recognize that, too!

“I always return the favor,” Tyler says. “I try really hard to match her meal for meal, and I help her fix things and stuff.”

All of this may come as a bit of a surprise. Aren’t guys afraid of being called whipped, after all? Tyler says that’s not something that bothers him, when he’s with the right girl.

“I helped jump [my girlfriend’s] car one night, and all of my buddies were saying I was whipped,” he says. “It didn’t bother me because I knew this was something that I wanted to do, and wasn’t being forced to do. I’m happy to take care of her.”

For a lot of guys, even the biggest of playboys, all it takes is one person to change everything.

“I used to be the king of one-night stands,” says Jared*, a junior at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. “I loved hooking up with random girls. And then I met my girlfriend. She and I had a mutual friend, so we hung around a little bit, and then I was done. I didn’t want random hook-ups anymore because I wanted her.”

For a lot of guys, settling down into a relationship doesn’t become an option until they meet someone they want to be with all of the time. It takes someone important to make a guy realize he’s sown all of the wild oats he needs to and see that he wants companionship, intimacy and mutual respect.

Don’t believe everything you’ve heard—not all college guys are only looking to randomly hook up with you. Now the challenge is just spotting the ones who do want a relationship!

How excited are you guys for the continuation of the childhood classic Finding Nemo in Finding Dory, to be released in June 2016? Dory, who originally appeared in Finding Nemo as a loveable (albeit extremely forgetful) blue tang, will embark on her own adventure to find her family in the movie sequel. Check out the trailer to get a sneak peek of Dory, Nemo, Marlin and the rest of the gang.

And it looks like Nemo and Dory's world is about to get a little more crowded, because Pixar is introducing two adorable new characters in its sequel. Entertainment Weeklyreports that the two characters are a friendly duo made up of a beluga whale named Bailey and a whale shark named Destiny that Dory encounters when she visits a rehabilitation center for marine life. Bailey is voiced by actor Ty Burrell (of Modern Family fame) and Destiny is voiced by Kaitlin Olson (best known for her role as Deandra Reynolds in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia).

The two characters both have challenges of their own, as Burrell describes in an interview with EW. "My character isn't great at his own sonar capability, and Destiny has trouble swimming straight," he reveals. Olson adds that Bailey and Destiny don't always get along, saying, "I like to think I'm a shark, but Bailey calls me a whale, and I make fun of his head, because it's gigantic." We are so excited to see Dory meet these two loveable sea creatures! And if there's one thing we learned from Finding Nemo, it's the power of unexpected friendships.

How to 'Grow Out' Your Hair Color & Go Back to Your Natural Shade

Whether you're attempting to undo a beauty makeover gone wrong or the simply want to go back to your natural color, the process can be daunting. Fortunately, we have the secrets to growing out dyed hair. Follow these tips to achieve the clean slate you've been craving.

For Lightened Hair

We all know that coloring hair can be addictive, and if you've used highlights or have dyed the entirety of your locks a lighter shade, you may be aware of the struggle it takes to go back to your darker tone without the usage of heavy dyes.

For Highlights

The first thing you should do is to stop the upkeep of colored hair; let your roots grow out!

“You can grow it out and embrace an ombré look until regular haircuts even the shade, or replace those highlights with lowlight in a shade close to your natural color every 6 to 12 weeks until the highlights have disappeared,” writes Iowa-based hair expert Kendra Aarhus in an About.com post.

For Fully Lightened Hair

Do not lose hope—it is possible to regain your natural hue! “The first step is to let your hair grow out for at least two to three months. This will give your stylist a good sample of your natural color,” says Aarhus. “Next, you'll need to do a ‘tint back’ to a shade that is as close to your natural color as possible.”

Depending on the state of your hair (as in, how healthy or damaged it is) and how much dye was used to lighten it, the time it takes for hair to fade back to its natural state may vary. Either way, a filler, or a protein used to equalize the porosity of the hair shaft and cuticle, will most likely be required to successfully tint your hair back to its proper shade. “Proper hair filling will ensure that your hair tone is even, and will prevent your hair from turning green or muddy,'” says Aarhus.

We all can appreciate some great hair products, right? Additional healing products like hair treatments such as Biosilk Silk Therapy and L'Oréal® Paris Hair Expertise Oleo Therapy Perfecting Oil Essenceas well as frequent visits with your hair stylist are recommended to help ensure that your locks stay healthy through the pigment-replacing process. It is also advised to always be honest and up-front with your stylist about the history of your dye jobs, so that he or she can help you find the quickest results in restoring natural colors!

For Darkened Hair

For a sleek and elegant look, many opt to dye their hair darker color to contrast their skin tone or stay in style for the winter season. To return to a lighter natural shade, a tint-back is also required, but in a bit of a different process.

“Your stylist will remove the darker color by lightening via a soap cap application or a color remover application. After the darker color has been lifted to the desired natural level, a color or color toner will then be applied in the natural shade that you desire,” says Aarhus. She also warns that a lighter color of dye cannot be successfully used to lighten hair that has already been colored darker, and may end up in a huge disaster (seriously) if attempted!

Patience is another factor that contributes to gorgeous, natural hair. After allowing your natural hair to grow back for two to three months, frequent appointments with a stylist are also highly recommended when ridding your hair of its dark pigments, and lead you to ultimately uncovering your natural beauty.
