5 Social Media Sins That Will Ruin Your Relationship

0
0

We all know Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Vine are way more fun when you can post photos and videos of that special someone you enjoying spending time with. However, social media can be dangerous to any relationship if used incorrectly! Be sure to avoid making mistakes that can throw your relationship into risky waters.

Mistake #1: Over-Sharing About Your Relationship

If you’re not aware how your partner feels about PODA (Public Online Displays of Affection), you should check—it’s important to respect those boundaries. Ramani Durvasula, a licensed clinical psychologist, reminds us that posting about your relationship online without your partner’s consent is inconsiderate.

She notes that you need to make sure your partner is on board with online mushiness; otherwise, it violates a boundary. But even if your guy is okay with you posting endless photos and statuses about him, that doesn’t necessarily mean you should. “Part of the joy of a relationship is the secret world you inhabit,” Durvasula says. “So keep some of it secret.”

Don’t worry, though; if he’s upset that you posted about the pointy ear he’s embarrassed of or the amount of beans he had at dinner the other night, you can still fix it. “Own up to your mistakes,” Durvasula says. “Sit with him and figure out what the two of you consider to be ‘appropriate conduct’ in the electronic space.”

Mistake #2: Posting Sexy Photos

Posting revealing pictures of yourself, like photos of you posing suggestively in a tiny bikini or close-ups of you in your extra-low-cut shirt, on any form of social media will almost surely spark jealousy from your guy. Mark Sharp, a clinical psychologist at The Aiki Relationship Institute, says that “putting [these photos] on social media… is likely to trigger stuff for some guys.”

Dylan*, a sophomore at Northwestern University, agrees. “I obviously don’t have a problem you looking sexy, it’s the fact that you’re sharing it with the entire online world and it seems like you just want attention,” he says.

Lesli Doares, a marriage counselor, says “a good rule of thumb when dealing with social media is that if you wouldn’t do it/say it with your partner right there, you shouldn’t share it online.” So unless your partner is okay with you posting all those sultry shots, try to keep your photos appropriate.

Mistake #3: Actively Keeping in Touch With Your Ex

While you and your ex may have managed to stay friends, you shouldn’t be actively interacting with him through social media by liking all his statuses and posting cutesy comments on his photos. Exes are a touchy subject in any relationship, and cyber-flaunting the fact that you’re friends with someone you used to date isn’t ever a good idea.

Sharp says that many people can develop reasonable friendships with exes, and those should be supported. However, if you’re interacting with your ex online to provoke jealousy or garner attention from your current boyfriend, that’s another story entirely. “You’re probably playing around with stuff that’s a little bit dangerous,” he says.

Mistake #4: Monitoring His Profile

Of course we’ve flipped back through his profile pictures and we check out his wall from time, but no one likes a mega creeper. So yeah, sometimes we spend time decoding his texts or we wonder what he meant by that cryptic status, but it’s definitely a turn-off to guys when they feel like you’re watching and obsessing about their every move.

If something is bothering you about what your guy has been doing online, talk to him about it. Durvasula says it’s important to communicate with your partner instead of making assumptions or getting possessive. “No need to call him out on every like,” she says.

Mistake #5: Subtweeting (and Other Petty Posts!)

Getting called out for something sucks, but getting called out for something in a public, online space is way worse. Matthew, a junior at UC Berkeley, hates the immaturity of subtweets. “Subtweets are the worst,” he says.

Posting about how you “hate getting canceled on at the last minute, ugh” is not a good way of handling problems in your relationship, and it makes you seem petty. Instead of subtweeting, Matthew says, “talk to [me] instead.”

Most guys agree that you should steer clear from posting vague or passive-aggressive statuses. Jacob, a sophomore at the University of Michigan, says that if something is seriously distressing his girlfriend, he wants to hear about it before it goes on Facebook. “If I see some vague, frustrated status about her life, I’m going to assume it’s [because of] me,” he says.

Make sure you don’t let social media negatively affect your relationship! Express appreciation for your partner, communicate with each other, maintain boundaries between your real life and your cyber life and don’t share too much—you’ll both be much happier. Keeping your relationship healthy online doesn’t take a lot of effort, and in the long run, it’ll make the relationship that much more likely to last.

How She Got There: Tehrene Firman, Web Editor at J-14 Magazine

0
0

Name: Tehrene Firman
Age: 23
Job Title and Description: Web Editor for J-14.com. I make sure the website is updated with breaking celebrity news, conduct interviews with today's top stars, write up fun features and update the magazine's social media accounts.
College/Major: University of Northern Iowa/Communication major with a minor in Journalism
Website: http://www.tehrene.com
Twitter Handle: @tehrene

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

Tehrene Firman: As a web editor, it's pretty much a 24/7 job making sure the site is the go-to spot for teens to get their celebrity news fix. On a typical day, I'll be writing up stories on the latest One Direction and Justin Bieber gossip and maybe doing an interview to get an exclusive story from one of our top stars—it's almost too much fun to be considered a job!

What is the best part of your job?

TF: The best part of my job is getting to work with teens. They're the coolest, most enthusiastic age group to write for because their reaction to everything is always priceless. They're incredibly passionate, and it's always really interesting to interact with them through social media. I love getting an inside look on exactly what their lives revolve around, which is mostly whom Harry Styles is dating.

What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

TF: This is actually my first job out of college! I saw the job listing go up and applied a couple months before I graduated last spring and ended up going in for an interview. Surprisingly, it was the only job I even applied for.

What is one thing you wish you knew about your industry when you first started out that you know now?

TF: I kind of knew this from interning, but you don't really realize how connected everyone is in the magazine world until you're really in it. It's crazy—I feel like it's almost like a high school where everyone knows everyone, no matter what company you work for.

Who is one person who changed your professional life for the better?

TF: I have a couple people that really stand out. Tammy Tibbetts, a former magazine editor who is currently changing the world with She's the First, connected with me on Twitter years ago and has been one of my biggest supporters ever since. Devin Tomb has also been such an amazing mentor ever since I interned for her at Seventeen last summer. Both of these women taught me so much and I feel very lucky to have them in my life.

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

TF: This is pretty general, but "stand out." In a world where everyone is working so hard to fit in, the people that go above and beyond to make themselves different are the ones who are going to succeed. This is a very competitive industry, so you need to make yourself memorable.

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

TF: Get as much experience as you possibly can. Obviously your grades are important, but the people who will be hiring you are looking for someone who really knows what they're doing. Write as much as you can, get editing experience, and if there aren't many options where you're from, don't let that stop you. I'm from an incredibly small town in Iowa and started my own online magazine to get experience. Your hard work won't go unnoticed. Trust me.

What It’s Like To Be In College, As Told By Our Favorite Disney Characters

0
0

When you went on your first college tour, you were so pumped to be there.

Then you get to college ready to have the best grades, social life, and dating life ever.

But the campus is enormous.

And you think your dorm is going to be like,

But really, it’s the size of a jail cell.

Not to mention, sometimes you walk into your room and your roommate… isn’t alone.

And you’re just like,

Oh, and the dorm showers are freezing.

And you get to the dining hall and the food is like,

But somehow you manage to gain the Freshman 15 anyways.

At the beginning of the semester, you couldn’t be more excited about your classes!

But then you get one of those professors who’s like,

Or one who is terrifying.

So you try to take notes in class like a good student.

But all of a sudden you get a bunch of papers and exams all at once.

So you prep for your exam like a boss.

…Even when your friends distract you in the library.

And you walk in confident that you’re going to pass.

But you get your grade back and you’re like,

So you go to the professor’s office hours and you’re like,

But your professor is just like,

And then there’s the dating scene in college.  In high school, you couldn’t wait to meet college guys!

You expect college dating to be like,

But really it’s full of frat guys.

You try to flirt with a guy and think you look like this,

When really you look like this,

And there’s always that girl who tries to steal your guy and you’re just like,

There’s that guy who only sends you booty call texts…

…and you respond anyways.

And there’s the guy who doesn’t text you at all and you’re like,

So you find another guy.

And this time he’s a keeper (if you’re lucky).

Frat parties were a mystical thing in high school.  You think they’re going to be all like,

And you walk in the house all dressed up ready to get your flirt on.

But frat parties are really like,

And there’s always that one creepy guy hitting on you

And you’re just like,

And after a little too much Jungle Juice, you walk home like,

And then all of a sudden it’s your senior year, and people start asking you what you’re planning on doing with your liberal arts major.

And you’re just like,

And then you start worrying about finding a job after graduation.

To quote Jane…

And then you actually have to graduate, and you have no idea where the time went.

It turns out, between the tiny dorms, the nasty dining hall food, those crazy classes, the parties, and the dating snafus, you made a lot of great memories in college.

Do we really have to graduate?

Ellen Page Comes Out as Gay

On Friday, at Time to THRIVE, a conference designed to support LGBT youth, Ellen Page came out as gay. The Juno actress, 26, made a short but inspiring speech in which she admitted to have been “lying by omission” and hoped that her coming out would “make a difference.”

Page expressed a certain fatigue that was the result of hiding her sexuality, and also discussed the way that Hollywood has impacted her in the same way it impacts the rest of the world, saying “[Hollywood] places crushing standards on all of us…Standards of beauty. Of a good life. Of success. Standards, that I hate to admit, have affected me.” She went on to say that she hoped that by coming out, she could help others who are struggling to come out, saying that in being open about her sexuality, she has come "beyond the pain."

Celebrities, including Lance Bass, Anna Kendrick, and Kate Mara, expressed support and congratulations for Ellen on the Internet.

Here's the video clip of Ellen's speech, check it out!

Props to Ellen for her courage; we will continue to stand behind you, girl!

13 Signs You Need to Get Some Sleep

0

Welcome to midterm season, collegiettes!  Some say it's the least wonderful time of the year; late-night cram sessions, more caffeine than can possibly be healthy for you and, yes, a severe lack of sleep, are all symptoms of this period of pre-spring-break mayhem. Take a break to check out what you might already be aware of: signs that you really need to get more sleep.

1. You’ve spent more hours in the library than in your apartment this week.

2. You're so out of it that you have developed the tendency to walk into things.

3. There is literally only one thing on your mind.

4. Everything is suddenly funnier than it would be if you were well-rested.

5. Every time you close your eyes, all you see is your bed.

6. It's really, really hard to stay focused in class.

7. You've tried to brush your teeth with something that was definitely not toothpaste.

8. People have said “You look tired” to you more times than your exhausted brain can count.

9. You feel so exhausted and emotional that the smallest things make you cry.

10. Everything everyone does ever is starting to irritate you.

11. You’ve consumed so much coffee recently that you FINALLY reached Starbucks Gold status.

12. Every class, every hour and every day feels like an eternity.

13. Your decision-making skills are so impaired that you decided it was a good idea to buy an Air Curler.

Just go take a nap. You'll thank yourself later.

Spring Break: Expectations vs. Reality

0
0

Whether you’re traveling to an exotic location or the beachfront near your campus, spring break always manages to fall short of what you expect. You spend all semester getting yourself pumped up for your week of freedom only to discover that the “all-inclusive” resort was a total rip-off or that your rented beach house was way smaller than what was advertised. No matter what’s on your agenda for your mini vacation, we’re sure you can relate to some of these spring break letdowns!

Expectation: Escaping your college town on an early flight to a tropical destination—you can practically taste the fruity margaritas!

Reality: Waiting in long check-in lines, getting held up at the security checkpoint because of the liquid foundation you forgot to pack in a quart-size bag and running through the airport like a madwoman to catch your flight.

Expectation: Meeting a gorgeous guy who just so happens to be staying in the same hotel as you. Can you say, “perfect spring fling?”

Reality: Fighting off drunk creepers at every place imaginable: the beach, restaurants, clubs and even tourist attractions.

Expectation: Waking up early to a warm sunrise to take advantage of the free continental breakfast and the exciting day ahead.

Reality: Sleeping past noon and only getting out of bed because your friends are noisy and lunchtime is almost over.

Expectation: Blissfully exploring an unfamiliar city and finding adventure around every corner. It’s like you’re in a Mary-Kate and Ashley movie!

Reality: Getting totally lost and trying to figure out your way back to the hotel like the clueless tourist you really are. And don’t forget about the inevitable arguments with your friends about whose fault it was!

Expectation: Eating delicious food from hidden gems you can’t find on TripAdvisor.

Reality: Settling for sketchy convenience store food because A) it is close to your hotel and B) you’re a poor college student.

Expectation: Hitting up parties every night until everyone goes home or the sun rises—whichever comes first!

Reality: Going too hard the first night and needing two full days in bed to recover from a cruel hangover.

Expectation: Showing off your new bikini (and beach bod) on a white-sand beach while achieving a golden-goddess tan.

Reality: Suffering from an intense sunburn (and awkward tan lines) because you forgot to reapply your sunscreen. Putting on clothes hurts and friends are able to send you into a world of pain with just one playful slap on the arm.

Expectation: Sticking to a comfortable budget by limiting your shopping and cooking some of your own meals.

Reality: Blowing all your money on souvenirs at a tourist trap and missing out on cooler, pre-planned activities like jet skiing and scuba diving.

Expectation: Realizing that the close college friends you’re traveling with could very well be your lifelong friends.

Reality: Realizing you should never spend more than two days straight with one of your friends because she complains more than all the students on your campus during finals week combined.

Expectation: Stumbling upon a picturesque spot to take the perfect “my spring break was better than yours” profile picture.

Reality: Dropping your phone in a pool or the ocean while trying to take the perfect profile picture.

On the bright side, these spring break mishaps will make for great stories in the future. Just remember that when your “dream vacation” hits rock bottom, it still beats going to class (because failing spring break beats failing a quiz!). We hope you’re able to avoid these downers during your week off, but just in case, pack a waterproof phone case, some aloe vera and a forgiving sense of humor.

9 Weird Beauty Tips: Myth or Fact?

0
0

Beauty advice can be tricky. Your best friend swears by a dab of toothpaste to fix her zits, while your mom says that's bad for your skin. With so many magazines and beauty blogs, it's easy to get lost in competing opinions there, too. Her Campus turned to three beauty experts to get to the bottom of nine weird beauty tips. Read on for expert tips from:

  • Katherine Goldman, a licensed aesthetician and the founder of Stript Wax Bar.
  • Dr. Jessica J. Krant, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist, founder of Art of Dermatology in New York City, and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
  • Annie Mayo, a makeup artist for film and TV and the founder of vegan makeup line Advanced Mineral Makeup.

TIP: Toothpaste helps reduce pimples.
VERDICT: Sometimes FACT.

This beauty tip is a classic for a good reason. On smaller zits, it works like a charm. “Toothpaste contains alcohol, which has the ability to dry up pimples and reduce redness and swelling,” Goldman explains.

Wash your hands and face to give yourself a clean surface to work with. Squeeze a small amount of toothpaste onto your ring finger – the finger you have the most control over, and therefore, the lightest touch – and dab a very thin layer over the blemish. Let the toothpaste dry for several hours. Peel off the dried layer carefully, without irritating the pimple, and continue with your regular skincare routine.

But be careful – this beauty fix can sometimes cause more harm than good. Dr. Krant says, “Larger pimples that are painful, red, and deep won't be budged. In fact, trying too hard to dry up a serious pimple can lead to burning the surface skin, causing a long-lasting scar or mark.” In cases like these, the pimple is likely to stick around even longer than it would if left untouched, so use caution.

As a rule of thumb, the toothpaste trick is safe as long as the pimple is “brand new and tiny,” according to Dr. Krant. If a pimple has lingered for more than a day or begun to worsen, don't touch it! A regular skincare routine should help keep zits at bay and help them heal if they've already arrived. Try Neutrogena's Deep Clean Facial Cleanser or Clearasil's StayClear Daily Face Wash. For more on acne treatment, check out these tips.

TIP: Spraying your makeup with hairspray locks it in place.
VERDICT: FACT, but proceed with caution.

If you're a dancer, you may have picked up this trick backstage. Hairspray keeps your makeup in place, especially while working up a sweat on stage. But as Mayo points out, “The cons of putting hairspray on your face far surpass the benefits. It contains harsh chemicals that can cause skin irritation and redness, and worse, burn your eyes. To really make your makeup stay put, apply a non-comodegenic primer and set your makeup with a finishing powder.” Try Sephora's Perfecting Ultra-Smoothing Primer and bareMinerals Mineral Veil Broad Spectrum SPF 25.

TIP: Cucumber slices fix puffy eyes.
VERDICT: FACT.

You've seen cucumber slices as beauty products in movies... but you've also probably seen vampire movies and flicks with flying cars. But we're happy to report this tip actually works! “Anything cool or cold laid on the eyelids will shrink the blood vessels beneath the skin and reduce the amount of fluid collecting there,” says Dr. Krant.

While cucumber slices are a quick and natural way to relieve puffy eyes, the effect might not be strong enough to totally fix the problem. Dr. Krant adds, “Whether it's enough of a change to really be visible to someone else is questionable.”

TIP: Caffeine fixes puffy eyes.
VERDICT: FACT.

Just like cucumbers, caffeine is another natural method of reducing puffy eyes. “Caffeine signals the blood vessels under the skin to shrink, which ultimately means less fluid under the thin eyelid skin and less puffiness,” Dr. Krant explains. Although, as with cucumbers, she maintains the effect might not be 100% obvious.

Goldman suggests applying caffeine topically by placing cooled tea bags under your eyes or by using an eye cream that includes caffeine as an ingredient. Check out Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Dark Circle Eye Roller.

TIP: Lemon juice lightens hair.
VERDICT: FACT, but proceed with caution.

According to Mayo, the citric acid in lemon juice opens the hair cuticle so that, when exposed to the sun's rays, the sun deeply penetrates each strand. “This won't happen overnight, but doing this for several weeks may spark a change,” she says.

Unfortunately, lemon juice doesn't give you the same degree of control that you would have with a professional colorist or even color from a box. “The citric acid often turns your hair a shade of orange instead of the honey blonde you were imagining,” Dr. Krant warns.

Unwanted color isn't the only risk with lemon juice. “The oils in the lemon rind can get onto your skin and cause a rash from interacting with the sun called phytophotodermatitis,” she explains. Protect your hands with gloves and avoid squeezing the juice directly into your scalp.

Since lightening your hair with lemon juice requires sitting in the sun for a long period time, it's important to wear sunscreen. Don't skimp on it! There's nothing cute about a girl with great hair and burned, blistering skin.

Here's how to DIY your own version of Sun-In:

  • Put on gloves to protect your hands from the lemon rind oils.
  • Combine ¼ cup of warm water with 1 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice.
  • Apply sunscreen to your face and any other exposed skin.
  • For full coverage, pour the lemon juice and water mixture into a spray bottle and spray your entire head.
  • For highlights, dip a cotton ball or pastry brush into the mixture and slide it down the strands you'd like to lighten.
  • Sit in the direct sunlight for 60 to 90 minutes.
  • Repeat the lightening process and sit in direct sunlight for an additional half hour.
  • Wash and deep condition your hair.

TIP: Olive oil stimulates hair growth.
VERDICT: MYTH.

The quest for long, luscious mermaid hair has driven women to try a lot of crazy treatments, including moisturizing their locks with olive oil. While it does have some benefits for your hair, growth isn't one of them, according to Mayo.

Dr. Krant explains, “Olive oil, or any oil, rubbed onto hair shafts will make the outer layer of the shaft lie flatter and give hair some shine. The oil moisturizes the hair, making it less dry and prone to split ends. This may be the reason hair seems to grow longer with oil rubbed on it – not because the speed of the growth changes, but because the rate of breakage decreases.”

Note that oil isn't without its drawbacks. In addition to greasier hair, the smell of olive oil may linger after use. A shine serum, such as Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Straightening Mist, is a more foolproof option for a glossy mane.

TIP: Cold showers make your hair shinier.
VERDICT: FACT.

Who said beauty came pain-free? Cold showers might be a shock, but this trick can really make your dreams of Kate Middleton hair come true. “Cold water closes the hair cuticle, which strengthens the hair and makes it less subjected to environmental conditions that could harm it, such as dirt build-up,” says Mayo.

At the end of your shower, when your hair has had time to soften, rinse your hair with cold water for ten seconds – or longer, if you can stand it! After your shower, avoid styling your hair with heat, which only dries and damages your newly-shiny strands.

TIP: Egg whites fight against cellulite.
VERDICT: MYTH.

You might have heard that egg whites fight the appearance of cellulite. We wish there was some magic trick to get rid of it once and for all, but this rumor isn't quite true. Egg whites do, however, reduce the appearance of cellulite in the short-term.

“Egg whites rubbed on the skin do dry and temporarily form a tight film over the skin, which could potentially make cellulite appear smoother, though not actually be smoother in the long run,” Dr. Krant advises.

To fake perfect skin for a night out, rub egg whites onto the desired areas with your hand or a pastry brush and finish with a quick wash of water.

If digging into the fridge for your beauty supplies isn't your style, self-tanner and moisturizer both lessen the appearance of cellulite.

TIP: Sleeping on your back helps avoid wrinkles.
VERDICT: MYTH.

“This is probably true on a temporary basis for looking less misshapen first thing in the morning, but there is no evidence that sleeping on your back long-term decreases fine lines and fine wrinkles,” says Dr. Krant.

Just like with the egg white fix, this tip may work on a temporary basis, but has no evidence for working in the long run. Your skin isn't likely to change overnight, so focus on maintaining healthy habits. If you're worried about wrinkles, add moisturizer and sunscreen into your skincare routine.

For collegiettes who are a little fuller on top or in the middle, finding the right swimsuit is all about filling out your hips and slimming your upper body. We love this DKNY one-piece because it breaks up your body in just the right way; the deep V-neck and the way it’s cut just under the bust pull the eye up and help balance your top and bottom. The ruching will help to smooth out your middle.

Another great option is an embellished bottom to fill out your hips paired with an underwire top to give you plenty of support.  Try this ASOS halter top with a floral, ruffled bottom from Forever 21. We also love this classic Body Glove top paired with bright pink bottoms; a little detailing will add some shape to your hips.

We love this bikini from Forever 21; the ruffles add a little volume to your bust. Plus, the color is fun and flirty! Or, try this patterned corset bikini from American Eagle. The pattern and contrasting colors add dimension. If you prefer a one-piece, try a bustier-style one, like this polka-dot suit from J.Crew. The high-cut bottom will give your legs length, and the top is slightly padded for a fuller effect.

The strategically-placed colorblocking not only draws attention to your waist, but the darker side panels add the illusion of an overall slimmer figure. Another great choice is this black-and-white beauty from ASOS. The belt calls immediate attention to your itty-bitty waist. For a bikini, a high waist once again draws the eye to the smallest part of your figure, while an underwire top gives you the support you need. Try mixing and matching pieces, like these fun yellow bottoms from Topshop and this simple black top from Target.

We also love this Forever 21 bikini; the sports-bra-style top will make a sporty collegiette feel right at home, and it’s padded to give you a little boost up top. The straps on the bottom will show off your toned bod and help to fill out your hips. Another option? This cutout one-piece from Nasty Gal. The cutout sides will help you fake a more curvaceous figure as well as show off your gorgeous abs.

We love this H&M one-piece; it’s simple but gorgeous. The strategically placed ruching will slim your bottom half, while the plunging neckline and wrap effect will give your upper half a little extra something. This Topshop bikini has a slightly retro feel with its floral embroidery. Its flowing top will balance out your bust, and the bottom will hit at your hips to show off those curves. Or, try a fun, printed top paired with a simple bottom to enhance your bust and work your hips. This mix-and-match bikini from American Eagle should do the trick!

ASOS CURVE makes gorgeous swimsuits in sizes 14 to 24 that will flatter and support your fuller figure. We love this ombre, high-waisted bikini! The underwire top provides plenty of lift, while the high-waisted bottom has flattering black side paneling. This two-piece from Forever 21 provides great coverage on top, and the dark color is flattering on everyone. The sweetheart neckline and halter will flatter your bust, too. Or, mix it up with this mixed-print one-piece from Lane Bryant. The striped waist and balconette top will show off your gorgeous curves!

Swimsuit shopping can be hard for everyone, but don’t fret! No matter your shape, there’s a swimsuit out there that’s perfect for you. Now hit the beach, collegiettes!

Collegiette Eats: Feasting in Seattle

Sick of eating cereal and ramen for lunch and dinner? Want to spend less money eating out and finally start cooking for yourself? Put down that frozen pizza, because HC’s Health Editor, Sammie Levin, is here to share her daily eats so you can get ideas for healthy, satisfying meals that are easy enough for any time-strapped collegiette to make. After you read Collegiette Eats, your taste buds, wallet and waistline will thank you.

I was in Seattle for the weekend for my cousin's wedding, so I figured I'd show you those eats instead of the boring airport and plane food I ate on Monday on my way back to Ann Arbor. The wedding was Sunday late afternoon/early evening, so instead of three regular meals, I ended up having two big ones: a big brunch and an even bigger dinner. It was the first wedding I've ever been to, so I had to live it up.

Brunch

We ate at the hotel for brunch, where there was a huge spread and a fab omelet bar with any fix-ins you could want. I got an egg-white omelet with smoked salmon, spinach, basil, tomato and avocado. So yummy. I also had a plate with berries, pineapple and a little scoop of oatmeal. I wish I had more of the oatmeal; it was top-notch. I don't know how the chefs got it to be so thick and creamy, but I was into it.

Dinner

The wedding dinner was buffet-style with so many healthy options. I was pumped. I got salad (with pears, green beans and gorgonzola), roasted Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, quinoa and salmon. Everything was so good and the flavors mixed together really well. Even though I was full after dinner (and all the hors d'oeuvres that came before it, which included tons of delicious cheeses), I couldn't pass up dessert at a wedding. It was hard to decide which dessert to choose, but I ended up picking a slice of chocolate mousse cheesecake. It was so good that I forgot to take a picture in the heat of the moment, but I promise it was pretty.

This weekend involved a ton of eating, so I'm ready to get back into a healthy routine and not feel like I'm bursting at the seams. I plan on following my five ways to recover from an unhealthy weekend to get back on track!

Sochi Scoop: Jamaica’s Bobsled Theme Song, US Wins Ice Dancing & Belarus’s Gold Medals

A lot has happened in Sochi over the past few days! The weird weather in the area caused some problems, and the underdogs stood out. Here’s what you missed over the long weekend:

Team Belarus takes men’s freestyle aerials

Belarus’s Anton Kushnir won the gold for the men’s freestyle skiing aerials event on Sunday night. Kushnir, 29, finished with a score of 134.50 after his final jump. Australia took the silver medal while China walked away with the bronze. Earlier in the Games, Belarus won gold during the women’s event thanks to Alla Tsuper.

Skiers crash and blame warm weather, Austria takes gold

Austria took the gold in women’s super-G on Saturday. Team Austria’s Anna Fenninger ended the event in just 1 minute and 25.52 seconds, a time that beat German Olympic medalist Maria Hoefl-Riesch. Hoefl-Riesch took the silver, while Fenninger’s Austrian teammate, Nicole Hosp, earned the bronze. USA’s Julia Mancuso finished in eighth place, though she won bronze in the super-combined just last week. Though 49 skiers competed in the event, 18 failed to complete it. Some skiiers blamed the warm weather for unusually soft snow. Lara Gut from Team Switzerland told The Associated Press, “There is no snow at the bottom, it’s not funny anymore.”

Jamaican bobsled team has a theme song, ends in last place

"The Bobsled Song" was released on YouTube by Jamaica’s tourism agency. The video features animated characters dancing as Jamaican bobsledders Marvin Dixon and Winston Watts bobsled down a 1,500-meter track. The bobsledders’ run is synced with the music. Despite their upbeat theme song (which you should totally watch above) the Jamaican dream team didn’t place during the two-man bobsledding event on Sunday. The team debuted in the 1988 Calgary Games, their story inspiring the Disney movie Cool Runnings. Dixon and Watts finished in last place (but they still have a movie based on their story and a theme song, so who are the real winners?).

Fog keeps causing delays

Biathlon and snowboarding events were postponed on Monday due to the heavy fog in the mountain region. The men’s biathlon event had already been postponed once before. It was originally scheduled for Sunday, but now it has been pushed back to Tuesday. In biathlon, the fog is a problem because athletes’ visions are impaired, making it harder to see where their targets are. Men’s snowboardcross was postponed until Tuesday as well.

With a painted mustache, Czech Republic wins snowboard gold

Eva Samkova sported a patriotic mustache during the women’s snowboard cross event on Sunday. The Czech athlete painted a mustache in the colors of the Czech flag (blue, white and red) on her face before the race. Samkova, 20, told reporters that the mustache was for good luck. The Olympic gold medalist has been painting mustaches on her face for competitions for three years.

US Olympic favorites take the gold in ice dancing

The US has never won a gold medal in a figure skating event other than singles - that is, until Monday night. Meryl Davis and Charlie White took home the gold for Team USA in figure skating doubles. Davis and White have been ice skating partners for 17 years. Their final score was 116.63, beating Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, who won gold in 2010. Russia took bronze thanks to Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov.

Darya Domracheva wins third gold medal

Darya Domracheva certainly has something to celebrate. Representing Belarus, she took her third gold medal on Monday during the women’s 12.5-kilometer mass start biathlon event. Because of her win, Domracheva is now the most medaled athlete so far of Sochi 2014. During this year’s Games, she has also won the 10-kilometer pursuit and the 15-kilometer individual race.

Netherlands sweeps speed skating (again!)

The Dutch have done it again! Last week the Dutch won all the medals in both men’s 500-meter and 5,000-meter races. On Sunday it was the women’s turn as three Dutch speed skaters dominated the podium for the 1,500-meter event. Jorien ter Mors, Ireen Wust and Lotte Van Beek took gold, silver and bronze, respectively. Mors finished the race in just 53.51 seconds.

Japan takes men’s figure skating gold

Yuzuru Hanyu won Japan’s first-ever gold in men’s figure skating on Friday. However, Hanyu wasn’t a hopeful. In fact, after falling twice during his performance, many thought he had lost his chance at winning the gold. But overall, it was not the night for men’s figure skating. Patrick Chan, a figure skating world champion, received an even lower score than Hanyu. The Canadian lost to Hanyu by almost five points. The bronze medal went to Denis Ten of Kazakhstan.

Medal count as of Monday night: top five countries

  1. Russia: five gold, seven silver, six bronze = 18 total
  2. United States: five gold, four silver, nine bronze = 18 total
  3. Netherlands: five gold, five silver, seven bronze = 17 total
  4. Norway: five gold, three silver, seven bronze = 15 total
  5. Canada: four gold, seven silver, four bronze = 15 total

Am I Ready For Sex?: 7 Things To Think About

0
0

Whether you’re a virgin or are contemplating having sex with a new partner, first times can be nerve-wracking. There are many factors to consider, both emotional and physical. We talked to Heather Corinna, founder and executive director of Scarleteen, an independent, grassroots sexuality education and support organization and website. Corinna is a sexuality, contraception and abortion educator and counselor as well as a writer and activist. Read on for her and collegiettes’ advice on how to know when you’re ready for sex.

When is the right time to have sex in a relationship?

Some girls wait until marriage, some wait a few months and some just a few dates. There’s no recommended timeline—the right time to have sex is when you and your partner feel ready. Eva, a Collegiette at Colby College, decided to lose her virginity a month into hooking up with the girl she liked. She says you know it’s a good time to have sex “once you stop thinking about it and don't doubt the person and trust they're on the same page,” she says. “I had a first time that was genuinely lovely. We fell hard and fast.” For others, it takes a bit longer to get comfortable. Veronica, a Collegiette at Johns Hopkins University, has dated her boyfriend for four months but has decided to wait to have sex. “I want to make sure I’m in love. I don’t want to have any doubts about it. You hear about a lot of people who do it and then regret it,” she says.

Further, consider your mental health. Are you depressed, overly stressed or anxious? Take a step back. “We know from a lot of broad study and anecdote at this point that while sex can be something we seek out for emotional comfort, when people are deeply depressed or suffering from a lot of anxiety or stress, sex with a partner often isn't the greatest choice, especially if sex is something someone isn't already engaging in—and thus, they'd be adding a new potential stressor—or when it's not happening in interpersonal contexts where someone feels pretty emotionally safe,” Corinna says. “Being in a relatively good mental headspace isn't required for sex, and it's not like if someone engages in sex when they're not in one, it's likely to create any mind of lifelong trauma, but it usually tends to hurt, rather than help, if we're already struggling emotionally.”

Will I just know when I’m ready?

Some girls know and other girls take a lot of time to think about the decision to have sex—both are valid! For Emily, a Collegiette at University of Virginia, sex was an option that required a bit of thinking first. “I knew I was ready for sex when it became obvious that my boyfriend and I had the same goals. We were both looking to get the same thing out of sex, so I could trust that he was not going to intentionally hurt or use me. It required a lot of communication, but many years later, I have no regrets,” she says.  For other girls, like Ann, a Collegiette at Roanoke College, she just felt deep down that it was the right time. “I didn't feel any reluctance. I wanted to do it with him. I wanted it to be with someone whom I cared about, who cared about me and whom I was secure with. I wanted someone who could guide me through it and not make me feel bad,” she says.

Sex is a two-way street, so your partner should be ready too. Can the both of you trust each other? Do you feel comfortable enough having potentially awkward conversations (about contraception, what you do and don’t like sexually, etc.)? Are you both mature enough to handle the consequences, good and bad, of sex? This isn’t an exhaustive list by any means, but you should make sure you know your limits and the other person’s limits before having sex. “I like to keep in mind that sex with someone can be, and often is, an emotionally and physically high-stakes activity.  Are we up for that?  Are they?  Do we both recognize that, and are we both on board to do what we can to manage those stakes and explore them together safely?” Corinna says.

Regardless of when you decide is the right time, your and your partner’s opinions are the only ones that count. There can be pressure to have sex in college, but that shouldn’t influence your decision. “It doesn't make sense to have the world decide such a personal thing but I think sex has turned into one of the most public things when it really should be the most intimate. Sex is in plays and movies and books and TV but really, it shouldn't be something that everyone feels like they get a say in,” Brittany, a Collegiette at Indiana University, says.

Will it improve my relationship?

Maybe, maybe not. Regardless of whether or not it might, that’s not a good reason to have sex with someone. There are a lot of bad reasons to have sex: pressure (both from your partner and your peers), a desire to “get it over with,” because you feel you have to and because you think sex will fix your relationship—just to name a few. But, there are a TON of great reasons too! Sex can be fun, intense, and passionate! A lot of girls do it for the emotional aspect. “I felt like I was more deeply connected to him because when we had sex, it was a more passionate kind of sex and not just some hook-up,” says Rachel, a Collegiette at Miami University of Ohio. There isn’t a “best” reason to have sex. And sex also doesn’t have to be some intense act of love if you and your partner don’t want it to be. “I guess I had sex out of curiosity. If it was as fun as people say, I said, ‘why wait?’ and if it wasn't as fun...Well I wouldn’t be curious anymore and I could move on with my life. I did it and I don’t regret it,” says Laura, a Collegiette at Rice University.

Will it hurt?

When girls talk about first-time pain, they’re often referring to breaking their hymen, which is a thin tissue that sits at the opening of the vagina. However, this is a myth. “The hymen, or corona, isn't something that usually ‘breaks’ at all, save with serious injury or violent sexual assault.” Corinna says. “Instead, it's tissue, and very, very thin tissue, at that, which usually very gradually erodes or wears away through a person's whole life.  And when first-time intercourse is uncomfortable, it's not usually about the hymen at all, which has no nerve endings of its own.  It's more often about lack of relaxation, arousal or lubrication—and is thus, vaginal pain—or a too-hasty approach, etc. For most people, hymenal tissue surrounding the vaginal opening will already at least have micro-openings if that person has been menstruating already, and it'll tend to easily stretch or move to the side for vaginal entry.  It's super-stretchy stuff.” The key? Having a trusted partner who will be gentle and patient. Lubricant helps too, she says. However, sometimes the hymen does tear a little, which will cause a bit of bleeding. This is no big deal and should go away in a few days.

There are other reasons for pain, too. Many down-there conditions like vaginismus and vulvodynia can cause sexual pain. If you experience severe pain, set up an appointment with your gynecologist, who can help you target the cause of your pain and find possible treatments.

What should I do about contraception?

Before having sex, have a conversation with your partner about contraception. To prevent possible pregnancy and STIs, having a contraception plan is crucial. Many women use the Pill or other types of birth control like IUDs or NuvaRing to supplement a condom. “I got on the Pill by choice so I wouldn’t feel so pressured to mention [contraception] when it was the heat of the moment,” Alice, a Collegiette at Johns Hopkins, says. “But my boyfriend and I would talk about [contraception] other times too, and he often was unprepared which made it annoying.” Alice told her boyfriend she required condoms to have sex, so he supplied them. Moral of the story? Don’t rely on anyone else when it comes to birth control—some guys carry them around, some don’t. Just to be safe, make sure you have condoms. Have a plan (and a back-up plan if necessary) and make sure your partner is on the same page as you. And don’t be afraid to stand your ground. “I’ve never had guys argue [about wearing a condom] except for once and I just stood my ground and they backed off. I couldn't care less if they don't want a condom. If they want to have sex with me they're going to wear one or I leave,” Alice says.

How do I protect myself from STDs?

Of course, birth control and condoms won’t assure you a clean bill of health. If your partner has been sexually active in the past, urge him or her to get tested for STDs/STIs, which you can do at your student health center. These conversations aren’t awkward if you’re with someone who cares about your well-being, says Alice.  “Sex with partners can introduce health risks we often won't be exposed to otherwise, like pregnancy, STIs, or even more common illnesses, like colds and flus, which are way easier to pick up when we're rubbing all over each other.  There are things we can do, of course, to reduce those risks, like contraception to reduce the risk of pregnancy, safer sex (barrier use and testing, as well as some lifestyle choices) to reduce our infection risk, and doing ourselves and others a favor like opting out of sex or taking a rain check if we or a partner have the flu or a runny nose,” Corinna says.

What if I’m not good at sex?

Being “good” at sex is all about communication, says Tiffany, a Collegiette at Maryland Institute College of Art. “Neither of us knew what we were doing so it didn't feel amazing but that's part of it. Practice makes perfect. The longer you’re with the one person, you learn what they like,” she says. By talking about what you like and don’t like (as well as your partner’s preferences!) you’ll feel confident about your own performance. “I felt inexperienced [my first time] and it took reassurance at first from the guy to get me to become comfortable with being myself and being with him which is basically how you become ‘good’ at sex. You go with the flow,” says Angelina, a Collegiette at Johns Hopkins. Sex is best when you’re comfortable with your own anatomy and arousal as well as your partner’s. No one’s perfect, of course. Sex doesn’t have to be hot and mind-blowing—but it should be a comfortable way to explore your and your partner’s bodies.

There’s a lot to think about when it comes to sex. But once you feel like you’re ready, it can be pretty awesome. “Sex with a partner that you're actually head over heels in love with and one that connects with you in every way is honestly the best thing in the entire world,” Alice says. “It's absolutely fantastic when you know someone well enough to be able to tell them what you like and what you don't like in the bedroom (or wherever else you do it, that's cool too), and to be able to listen to them and do the same for them. When you do that, and you've got the chemistry, sex is more incredible than any other thing in the entire world.”

11 Reasons Why We Love Ellen Page

0
0

We were already obsessed the tiny Canadian actress for her sass and her style, but Ellen Page gave us a whole new reason to look up to her after she came out to hundreds of people Friday at the Human Rights Campaign Foundation “Time to Thrive” conference, claiming she was “tired of lying by omission.” In her impassioned speech, the 26-year-old Juno star said, “We deserve to experience love fully, equally, without shame and without compromise.” Here are just a few reasons we love Ellen Page just the way she is.

1. She’s incredibly talented…

2. …and yet she never seems to take herself too seriously.

3. She doesn’t care about following the crowd…

4. …and she makes her own decisions as to whom and what she chooses to like.

5. She can admit that she’s still figuring things out for herself.

6. She knows just how to get the haters off her trail…

7. …and she doesn’t stoop down to respond to petty gossip.

8. She’s always looking for the silver lining.

9. She encourages women to embrace the word "feminist"…

10. …and she believes that all women should have the right to make choices for themselves in regards to their bodies.

11. Best of all, she is comfortable embracing herself just as she is and encourages others to do the same.

Kendall Jenner Makes Waves in the Fashion World

Kendall Jenner has grown up, people. The 18-year-old member of the Kardashian Klan has started making a name for herself in the fashion world, modeling last week at Marc Jacobs’ NYFW show (in a completely sheer top, no less), and making strides this week as well.  Kendall has made appearances in the fashion world in different capacities over the past few years, but 2014 is shaping up to be the breakthrough year for second-youngest of Kris’s brood.

In addition to walking in Marc Jacobs, Kendall has had a couple of flirtations with Vogue, starring in a photo shoot on the high-fashion mag’s Instagram and scoring a front-row spot at Topshop Unique’s show next to Anna Wintour. We can only imagine Kim's Vogue envy...

It was also released, through Giles Deacon’s Instagram account that Kendall will be walking in the designer’s show at London Fashion Week this week. How exactly did the model score such a coveted spot on the runway…and off the runway? Whatever her tactics, we can say that Kendall is quickly becoming the most watchable Kardashian sister. Sorry, Kimmy!

The 5 Guys You’ll Meet on Spring Break

0
0

You’ve picked out the perfect swimsuit. You’ve been working on your bikini bod for the past few weeks and planning your trip for the last six months. It’s time for spring break… and a new guy pool! Between the sunny days and breezy nights, there is plenty of mingling to be done. Here are five guys you are sure to meet on your sun-soaked adventure this spring.

1. The Straggler

He’s cute and he’s charming, but you’re not exactly sure who he is. You’re not sure whom he came with or whom he knows, but he always seems to be there. Most likely wearing a cheesy graphic tee with mismatched swim trunks, he’s made friends with you and all your friends, but his origins are still unknown.

Oddly loveable, this fellow is always down for adventure. Because he doesn’t seem to have a group of his own to coordinate with, he is up for anything. Boogie boarding, parasailing—the sky is the limit! His nomadic air and adventurous spirit make him the perfect party pal. Just don’t be surprised if he’s a part of your posse one day and gone the next.

2. The Party Animal

This guy stands out among the throng of bros chilling in the sun. Wearing Chacos, pastel swim trunks and a visor, he’ll be the one egging you on to bong the next beer. Feel free to decline his generous offer.

There’s no such thing as “taking a break” for this wild child. He’s ready to have the sickest week of his life, and he wants everyone to have the same experience. This ringleader is a great guy to know because he will always know the hottest party spots and will even have backup plans in case the destination turns out to be a dud.

Whether he’s rallying the troops at the end of the night to have another beer or searching for his Ray Bans the next morning because he went a little too hard, you’ll recognize this guy. And the party’s not over until he says it’s over.

3. The Guy Who’s Just Along for the Ride

This guy is the epitome of what it means to “tag along.” Spring break sounded like an interesting concept back in October when his friends first talked to him about flocking south. He figured hitting the beach would be more fun than spending a week at home getting ahead on upcoming assignments. This guy just wants to see what all the hype is about.

You can find this dude toward the back of the pack, soaking up the experience without getting directly involved, wearing an understated, plain, white T-shirt and sun-faded swim trunks from last summer. Comfort and mobility are his style goals; he never knows what his friends may try to get him to do.

While he may be a little more hesitant to join in the fun simply because he’s out of his element, that doesn’t mean he won’t try. You may have to be the one to offer him a drink instead of the other way around, but once you get him warmed up, he’ll be the life of the party in no time.

4. The Townie

A bunch of college kids coming to the beach for a week of lighthearted decadence is only appealing to one type of guy: The Townie. This guy lives for spring break season, when thousands of girls flock to his local beach.

A tad older than the rest of your crowd, he has this inviting, casual air around him. His intriguing, legitimately vintage T-shirt and hemp necklace almost allow you to forgive him for wearing khaki cargo pants. Almost.

For him, you are part of a new, transient babe pool, and he is ready to dive in. This is his spring break as much as it is yours. From late nights at the bar to casual walks on the boardwalk, this is his chance to show you what his town really has to offer. He’ll probably offer to teach you how to surf or invite you to dine with him at the best sushi restaurant in town.

While he may occasionally be sporting a “been there, done that” expression on his face, the opportunity for him to show off in his element is sure to make him come alive.

5. The Creepy Old Guy

This guy is a spring break staple. An older, slightly creepier version of the townie, this leathery local seems to always be conveniently sunning himself wherever you and your friends are at the beach.

While he may be wearing clothes that don’t fit his age (or his beer belly), he’s a potentially harmless, people-watching local just trying to catch some rays. He even told you about the local diner where you can get the cheapest, most delicious late-night food in town. But he may cross a line when he steps up to shotgun the next beer with your guy friends. Just casually laugh and find an excuse to walk away… Oh! Is that a bird eating the turkey wrap you left out on your towel?!
