Stunning Holiday Makeup Ideas for Black Women

From now until the new year, your social calendar is packed—and every single event requires being totally dressed up. It can be fun, but for women of color, finding the right makeup look can be a challenge. We've mastered our daily looks by mixing up the perfect foundation shade and creating concoctions of products and colors that are flattering on our skin tones—but when it comes to special events, we've heard all too often that "gold looks great on your skin tone." We love a great gold shimmer as much as the next girl, there are plenty of other festive colors to try! With the holidays in full swing, this is a great opportunity to sharpen those make up skills. Take some of these tips and head to the store for your next party look!

1. Gold Shimmer

Spice up your typical gold shimmer with winged liner and a deep cranberry lipstick! First, apply an eye shadow primer such as NYX Eyeshadow Base ($7) to keep the glam going all night. Then use a gold glitter tone like Mugshot from the Naked 3 palette ($54) on the majority of the eyelid. A swipe of Kat Von D ($19) Tattoo Liner on the lids adds tons of drama. Finish it all off with lipstick in a deep cranberry color like Ellarie by Colourpop ($5).

2. All Over Ombré

A double ombré is the perfect way to incorporate lighter tones on lips and eyes on deeper skin tones. Make it easier by using a palette like Cover Girl Eye Enhancers ($6) in Ice Princess; it has all the shades you need in one place. Focus the darkest shades near the outside of the lid and gradually use the lighter colors in the palette closer to the eyelid. For the lips, make sure to use a liner darker than the main lip color to achieve the ombré effect. Apply MAC's Heroine ($17), and then use an icy pink gloss for the middle. This will also give your lips a plumper look!

3. Classically Bold

Lupita Nyong’o is another dark-skinned beauty whose makeup is always on point! Keep it simple by using a simple black liner like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil ($20) in Perversion. Instead of using different shades for the highlight and crease, opt for just one shade, like this bright blue shadow ($7), on the lid. The finishing touch is a bright red lip like MAC’s Ruby Woo ($17).

The 13 Most Body Positive Celebrity Moments in 2015

Body positivity was front and center for us all in 2015—though we have more progress to make, the increased presence and representation of women of all colors and sizes in mainstream media has made us optimistic for the future. Check out some of the most body positive celebrity moments from this year, below!

1. Caitlyn Jenner is featured on a Vanity Fair cover

This past June, Caitlyn Jenner graced the cover of Vanity Fair with the simple phrase "Call me Caitlyn." Her cover was historical for many reasons, such as its front-and-center representation of a trans woman in mainstream media as well as its celebration of a woman over 60. Despite the controversey Caitlyn has been facing as of late, her coming out has helped spark more open discussion on topics of gender and sexuality. This has help teach us all that we should present our bodies in whatever way makes us feel the best, not based on how the rest of the world will perceive us.

2. Gabourey Sidibe has a sex scene on Empire

People of all size and ethnicities have sex—even though mainstream media seems to think otherwise. So it was amazing to see this represented on television! This ground-breaking Empire scene featured a plus size woman getting it on with an average sized partner, yet there was no mention of her weight. Instead, the scene made this interaction seem very normal—because that's what it is! The more often television shows people of all sizes having romantic and sexual interactions, the more representative it will be of the love lives of everyone

3. Erica Jean Schenk covers Women's Running

Plus size model Schenk was featured on the cover of Women's Running, another great moment for body positive activists everywhere. Many people think that people who are heavier are lazy and don't exercise—and that is totally not the case! It was amazing to see a woman who isn't your traditional fitness model on the cover of a health magazine. Your body size and type do not necessarily represent your health and fitness levels, so this photoshoot is helping to break such misconceptions.

4. Jamie Brewer rocks the runway at New York Fashion Week

This past February, actress Jamie Brewer walked the runway as the first model with Down's syndrome to walk at New York Fashion Week. She walked in designer Carrie Hammer's Role Models Not Runway Models show, which was aimed at giving women of all abilities, ethnicities and sizes representation in this historic fashion event. All types of women enjoy fashion and we are so happy to see diversity on the runway. This is definitely the start of a platform that is going to radically change the fashion industry as we know it.

5. Ashley Nell Tipton wins Project Runway

This year marked two major milestones for Project Runway's 14th season: Not only was Ashley Nell Tipton the first plus size designer to compete on the show, she also became the first designer with a plus size collection to win. Tipton's win is a huge accomplishment for plus size positivity and serves to demonstrate a change that is quickly happening within the fashion industry, geared towards the acceptance of all different body sizes.

6. Sports Illustrated pledges to feature plus size models in its pages

Sports Illustrated is known for sexualizing images of women with "perfect" bodies, so it's great to see that they're branching out from their traditional models to feature a more representative selection of women. Showing models of all types works to represent the variation between body sizes and why we should love them all.

7. Zendaya calls out a magazine for Photoshopping her image

After posing for a photoshoot with Modeliste, Zendaya slammed the publication for photoshopping her pictures to give her unrealistic body proportions. She wrote in an Instagram post, "These are the things that make women self-conscious. That create the unrealistic ideals of beauty we have." The magazine later announced that they would replace the retouched photos with the original. Photoshop works to reaffirm the unattainable standards which all women are pitted against. We love that Zendaya is one of many celebrities who are speaking against photo retouching and promoting self love instead.

8. Ariel Winters opens up about her breast reduction

The media was quick to criticize the breast reduction Ariel Winters underwent earlier this year, saying she was too young for plastic surgery and implying she was setting a bad example for all the teens who look up to her. In response, Winters opened up to Glamour about her surgery and discussed how it was a deeply personal decision that led to her being happier with her body than ever. Women should be able to make their own decisions regarding their bodies—whether that's to go under the knife or not. Winters taught everyone this year about self love and acceptance, and the importance of never changing yourself for anyone but you.

9. Milk Management signs Tess Holliday

Tess Holliday is the empowering plus size model who began the #effyourbeautystandards movement, and this year, she's had some incredible breakthroughs. Holliday was signed to Milk Management, a major modeling agency, and this is definitely a sign of the increasing acceptance of all types of sizes in the fashion industry. She is the first model who is above a size 20 to secure this kind of contract. We can't wait to see Holliday's next moves in the coming year!

10. Haraam Kaur does a bridal shoot with Rock N' Roll Bride

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a condition that is said to affect one in 10 women. However, no one likes to talk about the side effects, which include extreme body hair growth. Body image activist Haraam Kaur, who has this syndrome, rocked some awesome facial hair for her photoshoot and helped break down conventional standards of beauty. Her photoshoot proves everyone is beautiful in their own special way, despite what society says, and they should never let anyone tell them otherwise!

11. Chrissy Teigen promises to stop editing her Instagram posts

Chrissy gave us even more reasons this year to love her (as if we needed more)! Last April, the supermodel said in an interview that she has stopped using editing apps to achieve the perfect Instagram photos. She shared, "We've forgotten what normal people look like now. The standard is so ridiculous." Chrissy is totally right. We shouldn't need to spend hours editing our photos to feel good about our bodies—we should love them just as they are. Hopefully Chrissy's vow to love her body sans edits will inspire other celebrities to do the same and inspire women to appreciate themselves the way they are.

12. Lauren Conrad banned the words skinny, slim and thin from her website

Who decided that skinny always means beautiful, anyway? Lauren Conrad decided to ban these types of words in favor of ones such as "fit,""toned" and "healthy." She explained, "Every body is created differently—and healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes." We love that Lauren's focus will now be on being healthy, regardless of your shape.

13. The Pirelli calendar highlights more diverse women

The Pirelli calendar is known for shooting scantily clad women in suggestive positions, but this year, they completely revamped their image. This year, the calendar featured women based on their achievements and not for their looks, highlighting women such as Serena Williams, Amy Schumer and Yoko Ono. It also represented a wide range of ages, ethnicities, and sizes. Now that is girl power!

There were certainly many more amazing demonstrations of body positivity that we saw in 2015—these examples are all working towards inspiring young individuals to love the bodies they have because there is absolutely no reason not to. It has been awesome to see more representation and acceptance in the media this year and we can't wait to see what steps forward are made in 2016!

4 Ways You’re Scaring Off Your Crush (& What to Do Instead)

$
0
0

You can’t get over his beautiful eyes, athletic build or gorgeous smile. All you want to do is talk to him all the time and make him realize that you’re perfect for each other. That’s right: you have a crush and you’re falling hard.

We’ve been reading about flirting tips since middle school, and while having the confidence to express interest in someone is admirable, sometimes we get carried away. By coming on too strongly, you risk hurting your chances with your crush instead of helping them! Here are four ways that you scare off your potential love interests and how to come off a little more subtly.

1. You bombard him with texts, messages, emails, etc.

You know your crush has a test today, so you shoot him a text wishing him luck. But then you see something on campus that reminds you of him, so obviously you send him a funny Snapchat. And then, your professor says something ridiculous in class so you decide to chat him on Facebook, even though he’s sitting a few seats away from you. And then you text him again, so he knows to check his Facebook chat. By the middle of the day, he has about 12 notifications blowing up his phone…all from you.

With the dozens of ways to stay connected, it’s tempting to want to keep up constant communication with your crush. But over-communication, even across different platforms, can come off as smothering.

“It’s really common for collegiettes to over-text,” says Laurie Davis, founder of eFlirt, an online dating service. “Staying in communication is great, but checking in too often can be a turnoff.”

While it’s great that you want to get to know your crush and talk throughout the day, over-communicating might overwhelm your love interest. So instead of sending a FB message followed by a quick phone call, choose one form of communication for the day. “Make sure you’re not always the first one to text,” Davis says. “And stick to one platform. For example, texting and Snapchatting can seem like overload for your crush.”

Reaching out a few times with subtle messages will convey that you have some interest, but it won’t make you seem clingy. “Flirting is all about nuance,” Davis explains. “Digitally, you can do this by using emoticons more often – like winky faces [are more subtle than] hearts!” And if you find yourself always texting first, give your crush a chance to initiate the conversation first next time. It’s a good way to find out if your feelings are mutual! It’s totally okay to text your crush first sometimes (taking some initiative is a good thing!), but just make sure you’re not always the first one to reach out.

2. You involve your friends

Your friend knows his friend, and when you’re all out at a party, your friend badgers him about your crush and his feelings – while you watch from across the room, of course. Then it becomes a game of “he said she said,” and before you know it, your entire friend group is involved playing matchmaker.

Of course, we’re going to talk to our besties about our crushes, but that doesn’t mean that they have to get involved. No matter if they know your crush or his friends, your crush will eventually figure out that you’re trying to find out more about him via your friends. Awkward!

“It’s natural to want to gush to your friends,” Davis says. “But try not to put them in the middle. This is college, not middle school. No passing notes necessary.”

Instead of having your bestie pass along a message to his friend that you hope will reach your crush, be direct yourself. If you want to talk to your crush at a party, start a casual conversation. You’ll realize quickly if he’s into it or not.

“If you prod him a few times and he doesn’t [seem like he wants to hang] as much, he may not be as into you as you think,” Davis says.

So save the gossiping for roomie wine nights and skip the go-between, mixed messages between friends. You can show interest all by yourself!

3. You’re constantly running into him or her “by accident”

You know that he gets out of class around 11:30, so you make sure you’re walking by as soon as he walks out the door. During your lunch break, you accidentally run into him in the dining hall and then again when he’s getting coffee. And, surprise! You see him at the gym later on and you can’t help but think, “What a coincidence!”

Let’s be real, we’ve all done it at least once: stalking our crushes in the most non-creepy way possible. While it’s nice to unintentionally run into your crush, once you start planning your day around where he or she will be, your crush will probably be a little freaked out that you keep finding each other.

“Once you’ve creeped someone out, you’re out of the game!” says Adam LoDolce, a dating confidence expert. “[Avoid] following them on Facebook and then creepily showing up to the same party. The best thing to do is give some space.”

If you’re running into your crush multiple times a day or consistently seeking them out every single day for a week or two, consider backing off. Instead of planning feigned coincidental meetings, see if you actually run into them accidentally! Focus on seeing other friends, and once you’ve given your crush a little more space (about a week), contact them again. Your crush will probably feel less overwhelmed, giving you a fresh start to pursue him or her!

4. You’re overly flirty

When he sends a “What’s up?” text, you immediately respond with “Nothing much, sexy ;).” And when you see him at the bar later, you seductively drag him to the dance floor when all he wanted to do was quickly say hello. We all love to flirt, but there’s a difference between flirty and aggressive.

“Be subtle,” LoDolce says. “It’s a powerful way to show interest.” Instead of immediately turning a casual texting conversation into something suggestive, actually talk to your crush and include a couple of smiley faces here and there. If you’re talking in person, smile a lot and maybe tease him a little to see if you get a response.

“In person, try touching his arm when he makes you laugh and see how he responds,” Davis suggests. “Angle your body towards him more and make eye contact.”

When you’re subtle and not overbearing with your flirting, you can judge if your crush is into you or not. Keep him guessing instead of laying it all out there. Flirting doesn’t have to be over the top; sometimes the simplest gestures send the biggest messages.

Crushes are exciting, but sometimes we get a little too enthusiastic about them... Okay, try a lot enthusiastic. Instead of improving your chances with your love interest, you might be hurting them by coming off too strongly. Just keep these tips in mind and remember that a little subtlety can go a long way!

Study Shows More Than 20 Percent of Beliebers Are Liars

Whatever your opinion of Justin Bieber, it's undeniable that he's had a pretty incredible 2015. When Purpose was released this year, it was met with rave reviews from music critics and fans alike. Chances are, you listened to it on repeat... even if you refuse to admit just how much you really loved it. And you're not alone.

Given the popularity of his latest album (17 songs from the album ended up on Billboard's Hot 100, the most a single artist has had on the list in a week), it's obvious more than just the loud-and-proud Beliebers, otherwise known as tweens, were listening on repeat.

So Ticketbis, a European-based ticket resale company, looked into the numbers. Their study shows that despite the increase in popularity—a 10 percent jump in the U.K. over the past two years—21 percent of Bieber fans won't admit just how much they love his music.

There's insight into where you'll find these fans—and why they might be staying mum. According to data from Spotify, Bieber's music was among the most popular in one of Brooklyn's trendiest and most hipster neighborhoods: Williamsburg. It's no wonder they're not admitting Belieber status... they're just too cool for that.

1. Lauren Curtis of Lauren Beautyy: The Bold Smoky Eye

Australia’s favorite beauty vlogger, Lauren Curtis, is inspiring women all around the world to up their makeup game. Her instructional videos on all things beauty are not only reliable and practical, but also empowering. In this video, Lauren uses the original Naked palette to create a sultry smoky eye, perfect for a night out. Using the palette’s warm, gold shadows and classic charcoal tones, Lauren enhances the typical smoky eye with a bit of glitz and glam. She feathers the shadows out to the edge of the brow bone and below the lower lash line for a more vibrant, eye-widening effect. You can even skip the eyeliner with this look since the palette’s darkest shades work just as well for defining the shape of the eye.

2. Danielle Mansutti: Understated Glamour

Danielle is a British-born beauty who turned her passion for makeup and fashion into a successful vlogging career. With more than 32 million views on her YouTube page, this young entrepreneur is a trusted source when it comes to experimenting with new beauty looks.

Danielle takes advantage of nearly half the shadows in the original Naked palette to develop a warm color on the eye lids. By layering shimmering colors on top of the matte shades, the shadows seamlessly blend with any skin tone. A sweep of one of the palette’s darker shadows at the eye’s crease pulls the look together and eliminates any harsh lines. Danielle’s approach to this versatile palette is perfect for daytime and easily modified using your own favorite colors.

3. Michelle of ReadySetGlamour: Your Any-Occasion Favorite

When she’s not being a total #girlboss in the PR and marketing world, Michelle creates amazing videos and blog posts for her personal brand, ReadySetGlamour. Just like us, she loves to experiment and try new products, so she’s a great source when it comes to researching your next beauty investment.

Michelle uses the Naked 2 Basics palette to create a light, all-matte look suited for everyday wear. Using four shadows, Michelle creates a layered yet effortless look that is super versatile and accessible for both beauty novices and makeup mavens. This look is also light enough for daytime wear and will immediately brighten dull, sleepy eyes. Michelle chooses a shade with purple undertones for the crease of the eye, but depending on your own skin tone and color preference, you can easily substitute with another of your palette’s three darkest shades.

4. Leina of MakeupbyLeinaBaaaby: Shimmering Shades

Leina has turned her career as a freelance makeup artist into a hit YouTube channel where women flock for advice and expertise on all things cosmetics. For instance, if you want a look that’s still daytime appropriate, but a bit more luxurious, try Leina’s formula using the Naked 2 palette. Leina selects a few of the palette’s more glittery shadows for an iridescent radiance that will make your eyes pop in the daylight. It’s easy enough to quickly apply in the morning, but will transition effortlessly into your evening festivities. An extra coat of mascara and a little blush would make the look date night ready in no time.

5. Leigh Ann of Leighannsays: Feminine and Flirty

Leigh Ann is our favorite girl-next-door, who is creating fun, high quality videos that showcase her obsession with makeup, fashion and hair. Her YouTube videos have garnered millions of views, so it’s clear this Texas blonde knows her stuff.

Leigh Ann uses the rosy shadows in the Naked 3 palette to create a soft yet sophisticated look. The variety of pink and rose hues on the palette’s left side enhance the pink and red tones in your skin, creating a warm and natural appearance on the eyes. Leigh Ann works the lightest shades onto the inside corners of the eye, and ends with a sweep of a rich charcoal on the outer wing. The soft yet sleek look is perfect for brunch with the girls or a sorority soiree.

Whether you already own a Naked palette or are trying to decide which one is right for you, a little advice from some self-proclaimed beauty experts is always valuable. With the help of these lovely ladies, even us make-up novices will be inspired to step outside our comfort zones, experiment and challenge ourselves with a brand new look. So fluff those make-up brushes and sharpen your eyeliner, because it's time to get primping!

18 Signs You're Undeniably a Hot Mess

Ah, college—the time when you’re in way over your head, and you’re constantly scrambling to just have a handle on everything. Some of us do this much better than others. And those “others” are categorized as a group of special people: hot messes. You can point out a hot mess from a mile away, and every single one of us has been this person at least once in our lives. But if you relate to these signs, you might be a professional hot mess--no doubt about it.

1. You’re at least ten minutes late to pretty much everything.

2. Your room is a disaster since you’re always rushing to get ready (being constantly late and all)

3. Picking clothes is so hard because you can’t remember the last time you even did laundry.

4. So you just wear some clothes multiple times in a row...no one will notice, right?

5. You live off of Starbucks and granola bars because making food is just too time consuming.

6. You’re always that person in class who says, “wait, that was due today?”

7. Your planner looks like this:

8. You’re surprised when you actually know what day it is.

9. When you’re overwhelmed with all the work you have, you decide to nap instead.

10. You can’t remember the last time you washed your hair, but it’s fine because you’ll just keep it in its perpetual top knot.

11. You’re constantly apologizing to group/organization members for missing a meeting, simply because you just completely forgot.

12. Sleep has become a foreign concept.

13. Your phone screen is almost definitely cracked.

14. You’re a pro at submitting things literally ON the deadline, which is so nerve-wracking it makes you even MORE of a hot mess.

15. You’re almost always forgetting something.

16. You’re pretty sure that your bloodstream is 80 percent caffeine.

17. You can’t go a day without someone asking if you’re okay, when you’re really just living your normal, hectic life.

18. TBH, you self-identify as a hot mess, and embrace the title for all it’s worth.

The 17 Stages of Winter Break

$

If there's one thing we look forward to for the entire first semester, it's going home for winter break. That is, until we realize that all of the places we used to hang out at are now full of middle school kids and the bars in our towns are like unwanted high school reunions.

It's winter break, so bring on the boredom, the overeating in your mom's kitchen and the incessant questions from family members about why you're single! Here's our take on the stages of being home for the holidays.

1. Finals are over, and you have never been more ready to go home.

2. You and your high school friends are already coordinating your first hangout for when you’re all back in town.

3. Best of all, you’re dying for your mom’s home-cooked meals.

4. You and your friends go out to the local bars that you were never old enough to get into until now…

5. …and happen to run into that annoying girl from high school, that boy who could never fully understand the concept of being friend-zoned, your old babysitter and your parents’ friends.

6. Then you try hanging out at the mall or catching a movie…

7. …but somehow everywhere you go is flooded with middle school and high school kids.

8. Public places are now a no-go. It’s okay, though, because winter break is also for relaxing, right?

9. You have nothing to do! You’re pretty sure that if you lay in your bed watching Netflix for 48 hours straight, no one would notice or care.

10. In fact, that might be all you can do, seeing as you and your friends are already bored of everything there is to do in your town.

11. Eventually the holiday high sets in, and you have a large to-do list that includes gift shopping and watching Elf at least three times.

12. As fun as it is to spend the holidays with your family, you’re aching to celebrate New Year's with your friends and not your kid sister.

13. By January, you’re drowning in boredom and dreaming of when you can go back to school.

14. Of course you love your parents, but you can’t say you’ll miss having to constantly dodge their questions about why you’re not dating anyone or what your GPA was this past semester.

15. By the time the new semester is drawing near, you and your college friends already have a full agenda of plans to make up for lost time.

16. Saying goodbye to you is never easy for your parents…

17. …but, eh, you’ll be back home to wreak havoc under their roof in May!

Jennifer Lawrence Gets SO Real About Bradley Cooper's Butt (& Not in the Way You'd Think)

We love that Jennifer Lawrence always says exactly what's on her mind and, in a recent interview with the UK's KISS FM, she obviously held nothing back. Lawrence and actor Bradley Cooper have co-starred in an impressive four movies together to date, so it's safe to say the two must know each other pretty well. J-Law demonstrated this when she made some awkward but hilarious comments about Cooper's butt in her interview. And it's totally not what you'd think someone would say about this Hollywood hunk's behind!

When talking about working on scences for their movie Silver Linings Playbook, Lawrence said of Cooper, "When we were doing our dance lessons together, I'm pretty sure he sweats from his butt first." She didn't stop there, going on to elaborate, "You know, you've got pit stains everywhere, but, like, his butt would start sweating and I'm like, 'Is your butt sweating before your armpits are sweating.'"

Leave it to J-Law to tell us about the one thing about Bradley Cooper we NEVER wanted to know (but are secretly glad we do). Ultimately, though, this is just proof that Cooper is actually a human being!

Considering that Lawrence and Cooper went on to make three more movies after Silver Linings, we'd say it wasn't a deal breaker for their work relationship. Let's hope there are many more movies to come between this dynamic duo and that we have the opportunity to learn more entertaining personal details about Bradley Cooper in the future!

How She Got There: Jacqueline Ros and Andrea Perdomo, CEO & COO of Revolar

Name: Jacqueline Ros
Age: 25
Job Title and Description: CEO & Founder of Revolar
College Name/Major: University of Florida/Interdisciplinary International Studies & Spanish

Name: Andrea Perdomo
Age: 25
Job Title and Description: COO of Revolar
College Name/Major: UNC-Chapel Hill/International Business
Website:Revolar.com
Twitter Handle:@andrea_maria03

What does your current job entail?

Jacqueline Ros: Is there such a thing as a typical day? My job is absolutely different every single day. However, overall the job of a CEO is three-fold: set and implement the vision, hire talent (I’m proud to say that I have the best team in the world; no bias) and make sure we don’t run out of money.

Andrea Perdomo: I love that there is no such thing as a typical day. Every day is completely different. At Revolar, we believe in having freedom and that translates to meeting twice a week team-wide and the rest of the time achieving the goals we set the week before. Being a part of a young company I wear many hats, from HR, budgeting and fulfillment to planning bowling night and community relations. That is truly what make my job the best job in the world. I am never bored.

What is the best part of your job?

JR: At Revolar we are empowering individuals with wearable safety technology. From day one, people have responded powerfully to our product and thanks to their support, we know we are building technology that will truly make an impact. Why is this hard? Our product helps many, from young women to those facing health concerns, but the initial impetus for this product was my little sister’s sexual assaults and my desire to keep her safe and help her heal. Our technology will help disrupt rape culture by giving survivors tangible data to stand up to their attackers.

Currently, when someone tries to stand up, the legal system revictimizes them: What were you wearing? How much were you drinking? [These are] questions no one would ever think to ask you if you were reporting your car getting stolen. The hard part of this mission has been the heartbreaking realization that so many more people that I know intimately have faced this struggle. They see me as a safe person to speak with (which is an honor) but as each of them, male and female, speak up, it breaks my heart as it strengthens my resolve.

AP: Our incredible team. There is something about working with a group of people with one goal and one passion. We all want to improve safety worldwide and that mission is what drives us all.

What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

JR: I created my job so there wasn’t quite an entry-level job as much as a "learn as you go" model. However, straight out of college I joined Teach For America. I taught in Colorado for two years while bootstrapping Revolar. Then I worked a part-time job with Leadership for Educational Equity (LEE), training teachers to run political campaigns in order to change the educational system from the top down. Both jobs were incredibly invaluable at giving me the necessary skillset and emotional intelligence to handle my current role.

AP: If we are talking [about] tech, this is my first. My passion is to put the puzzle that is a business together to function as one and move forward. Management is a big piece of that. I worked at Belk right out of college as a member of their merchandising and management program. I was managing over 90 people while driving sales and merchandising entire departments. One of the recruiters from Belk reached out to me [on LinkedIn] and it started there.

What is one thing you wish you knew about your industry when you first started out that you know now?

JR: I wish I had known how incredibly cool technology is before leaving college. If I could go back, I’d be an engineer. Technology is the future, and currently women and minorities are incredibly underrepresented. We need more voices shaping this future, so consider joining!

AP: Everything always takes longer than you expect. Luckily for me, I have loved every minute of the journey, but it has definitely taken longer to put those puzzle pieces together. Tech is hard, and creating hardware is even harder.

Who is one person who changed your professional life for the better?

JR: Emily Elsenbast from LEE was the best boss I’ve ever had. She made me feel empowered in my role. I do everything I can to emulate her style.

AP: My father. He has not only been my inspiration and biggest cheerleader, but my number one mentor. Without his support, trust and advice I would have never made it this far.

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

JR: I didn’t trust my instincts as soon as they came roaring early on. Trust your instincts and act quickly. It’ll save you stress and probably money. Also, talk to an accountant about how to set up a business before you speak with a lawyer.

AP: Doing too much at once. There is such a thing as burning out. I have learned that without a healthy body and mind, you are not efficient. Work-life balance is very important. This journey is not a sprint, it’s a marathon, and it's important to know when to stop, breathe or go to yoga. As a company, we make weekly goals to take care of ourselves. Being healthy is our number one priority.

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

JR: We just closed a three million dollar round with the Foundry Group. This is the group whose portfolio includes FitBit and Sphero (the Star Wars robot). They are an incredible group who want to help me end rape culture and help as many people as humanly possible along the way. It’s been surreal to know the level of faith they have in my team and I. It’s surreal and humbling. I feel the same way about my team. I’m constantly blown away by their passion and commitment. It’s surreal to think I’ve built the life of my dreams, a life where I’m surrounded by empathetic, brilliant people who stimulate, push and support me on a daily basis.

AP: Definitely April 23, 2015. It was the day that Jacqueline gave me my first paycheck. After working odd jobs for over a year (nannying, data entry, you name it), being able to create our own paycheck was an unreal feeling. No one can take that moment away from me. I knew then that Revolar was now more than a dream, but a reality!

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

JR: I look for self-motivated people. I didn’t micromanage 5-year-olds; I’m sure as heck not going to micromanage adults!

AP: Passion and drive. It has been my passion for Revolar and what it stands for that has kept me going. This is hard, and you need that passion and drive to keep going and do quality work.

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

JR: You can absolutely make your dreams come true, but no one will hand them to you. Do your research, read as much as you can on what you are trying to accomplish, become the expert on your topic and always trust your instincts. Also, saying [this as] I’m a whole 25 years old: Don’t think you’re ever too young to make a huge impact.

AP: Just do it! Ask yourself, what is the worst that could happen? You get a no? Well, keep trying, and it will happen for you. If this wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. I am a 20-something, and I wish someone had told me this when I was in college.

How Much Sleep Should You REALLY Be Getting In Your 20s?

$
0
0

We all crave catching zzz’s, and for those of us toiling away in our twenties, sleep is more important than ever. Working 9 to 5 means you can’t just sleep the day away or pull regular all-nighters anymore. So what happens when you aren't getting enough sleep, and what should you do about it? Read on to find out!

1. What your body looks like when you don't get enough sleep

How do you know if you’re getting enough sleep? “On a weekend, if you can sleep [over] 2 hours [more] than you normally do, then you know on the weekdays you aren’t getting enough,” says Dr. Phyllis Zee, Director of the Center for Circadian and Sleep Medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. Dubbed ‘social jet lag’ by experts like her, this practice of oversleeping to compensate for your sleepless workweek is the strongest indicator you’re not getting enough. “It is not normal to be sleepy. We think it is because we all do it,” she says.

Related: I Tried to Sleep Eight Hours a Night for a Week

Another way to know: it takes gargantuan amounts of coffee for you to function. You’re certainly not getting enough “if you have to drink a large amount of caffeine during the day to stay awake,” says Dr. Josna Adusumilli, Neurologist and Sleep Medicine Physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

Rule of thumb for young adults? Seven to eight hours per night. Less than six hours of sleep and your brain won’t function at its peak. A few days of this may grant you some embarrassing moments, but long term sleep deprivation can lead to serious health issues like diabetes and heart disease. In the long run, you’re putting yourself at risk for chronic cardiovascular diseases, significant weight gain, and poor cognitive performance. Not good.

2. Ready, set… sleep

As busy post-collegiettes, we’re constantly on. If you’re sending emails or texts late into the night, or anticipating a rush of work early in the morning, the stress might be keeping you awake at all hours. We’ve compiled a comprehensive list to make sure you get the best night’s sleep possible.

Make your bedroom a haven by creating a quiet, calm environment to help you wind down.

  • Keep your bedroom temperature slightly cooler, around 65 degrees (bonus: it'll save you money in the winter!).
  • Shut your blinds or other places where stray light may filter into the room.
  • Have a snoring partner or loud neighbors? It’s worth splurging on some noise-canceling headphones like these Bluetooth over-ear ones ($249.50, Bose). Try a cheaper option with this comfy headband ($29.95, SleepPhones).

Keep a consistent exercise and sleep routine.

Train your body when it should be sleeping and when it should be awake. “Try to wake up at the same time each morning; if you do this, then your bedtime will naturally start to synchronize so that you can fall asleep easier at night,” says Dr. Adusumilli. Exercising regularly keeps you in the groove—so make sure you’re exercising at the same time each day if you can, and no closer to bedtime than 3 hours. That falls under “stressful” activities before bed, which experts agree is a no-no.

Take advantage of your Circadian rhythm.

Your Circadian rhythm is a fancy term for describing your body’s clock. It regulates your sleep cycle, which is heavily influenced by light exposure. “Exposure to bright natural lights during the morning, before noon, and dimming your lights before you go to bed is one of the most important things you can do,” says Dr. Zee. It’s the most natural way to let your body know it’s time for bed.

Power down.

Dr. Adusumilli says to “try to avoid watching television or working on the computer before bedtime, since these devices emit blue light, which can make the brain more awake.” That blue light confuses your brain into thinking it’s not time to sleep by messing with your circadian rhythm. Most experts recommend shutting off all technology (yes, even Netflix) for at least 30 minutes before you hit the pillow. Keeping your bedroom a technology-free zone can also keep away the temptation to check Instagram. Your sleep thanks you.

Sleep apps can help you snooze.

Even though technology is partly to blame for our lack of sleep, mobile apps like Sleep Time, Sleep Cycle, and Sleep Bot can help you catch better quality shut-eye. Though they’re not 100 percent accurate, they work based on movement, so you can tell whether you’re getting a solid block of sleep or something more fragmented. Knowing exactly what your sleep cycle looks like will help you identify when you’re waking up and why, which can help you connect how you’re feeling (like a zombie) to the amount of sleep you're getting (4 hours).

3. Still burning the midnight oil?

So you’ve been following our advice, but you’re still not catching a wink? It may be time to talk to your health care provider, particularly if you’re allowing yourself seven to eight hours in bed. Says Dr. Zee, “If you’re having chronic problems falling or staying asleep three or more times per week, it’s having an impact on your ability to function throughout the day, and it’s lasting more than a month, it’s definitely time to let your health care provider know you’re having trouble with your sleep.”

Ultimately, your sleep is the difference between you being a functioning adult and a mindless zombie. Getting enough of it, and of the right quality, isn't just important for your health, but for your overall happiness as well. Who knows? All that extra sleep with these tips could turn you into a morning person!

Now we’re sharing the rest of the interview, where she chats with Her Campus Editor-in-Chief Stephanie Kaplan Lewis about being a female ambassador in the male-dominated United Nations, and working on transgender rights with Caitlyn Jenner.

She also has some great advice for college women: Go deep on issues you care about, and remember to humanize big problems with individual people’s stories. She knows what she’s talking about—Power spent her first few years out of college working as a journalist in the former Yugoslavia, where she got a first taste of many of the issues she would work on years later at the UN.

“I love college women. I’m counting on college women!” Power says. Let’s live up to that challenge! Check out the rest of the interview below.

Kelsea Ballerini is, without a doubt, country music's newest rising star. Not only did she join the long list of celebs who hit the stage with Taylor Swift on her 1989 World Tour this year, but she'll be kicking off 2016 by touring with country mainstay Dierks Bentley. The "Dibs" singer, who is a self-proclaimed DIY fanatic, was gracious enough to use what little downtime she has to craft a special project exclusively for Her Campus readers! We have a feeling you'll be dying to try out her painted mason jar DIY—turns out, Kelsea is just as obsessed with mason jars as we are—after you see just how far beyond the music world Ms. Ballerini's talents lie.

What you'll need:

  • Mason jars—these can be purchased at most convenience and grocery stores
  • Acrylic paint—I chose pink, turquoise and silver!
  • Foam paint brushes—one per color

Step one:

Begin with one thin coat of paint. With acrylic paint, the wait time between coats is typically one to two hours. After the third coat of paint, you should be good to go!

Step two:

Depending on your style and decor preferences, there are many options for "dressing up" your new mason jars! I experimented with both ribboning and a floral arrangement.

Step three:

Enjoy and share with friends!

Kelsea Ballerini's debut album, The First Time, is out now.

How to Get Rid of a Sudden Breakout

$

One day, you glance in the mirror and proudly notice that your skin is close to clear. But then it happens: You have a stressful paper to write or you overindulge on late-night pizza, and boom! Acne. We’ve all been there and it’s frustrating, to say the least. Wasn’t acne supposed to end when we graduated high school? Thankfully, there are plenty of simple solutions to this common problem. Although we’ll never completely get rid of those annoying red spots, the following tips will definitely help!

What causes sudden breakouts?

Stress

It’s no secret: Stress has detrimental consequences on your health, and your skin is no exception. Dr. Kenneth Mark, a dermatologist based in New York City, explains that being worked up is one of the most common causes of sudden breakouts, especially in such a fast-paced environment as a college campus. Stress leads to the overproduction of sebum and the clogging of pores; these two things combined are the reason pimples appear. So when you’re stressing about that paper or your love life, you’re more likely to get those evil little spots.

Hormones

According to Dr. Mark, your hormonal cycle is one of the other leading causes of unexpected breakouts. Acne is common during PMS, because our levels of the progesterone hormone spike. In combination with testosterone, this hormone leads to the production of sebum and works to tighten our pores, which is why we break out at this time of the month. Just the PMS news we needed!

Greasy food

A healthy diet is crucial to your beauty routine and will leave your skin feeling and looking as clear as ever. Conversely, go too hard on late-night munchies or ice cream sandwiches and you might find yourself with a nasty pimple. “While traditionally we were taught that diet did not influence acne, there is a newer school of thought implying that indeed what we eat could also be playing a role,” Dr. Mark says. “It makes sense; we are what we eat.” Ugh, did we really need another reason to pass up the Nutella?

Sweat

Whether you wore a hat that day, you stayed on the phone too long or you didn’t wash your face after working out, leaving sweat on your face will inevitably lead to a breakout. This happens because sweat “is a physical irritant that can clog the pores,” according to Dr. Mark. Gross, we know.

How can you prevent sudden breakouts?

Exfoliate regularly

We know to wash and moisturize our faces every day, but we don’t always think to exfoliate. According to Dr. Mark, this is super important. “All acne starts with clogged pores,” he says. “Using a daily exfoliant is key. Something as simple as Neutrogena acne wash with 2 percent salicylic acid once or twice a day can accomplish this.” There are also some less harsh at-home products for sensitive skin, such as Aveeno’s Positively Radiant Skin Brightening Daily Scrub ($5.60 at Drugstore.com).

Get a prescription

This is definitely not the easiest solution, but heading to the dermatologist can often be the most effective way to prevent acne. “There are also topical prescription medications and, for those with severe enough acne, oral medications such as antibiotics or even birth control pills,” Dr. Mark says. Since these treatments aren’t available over the counter, you need to consult an expert if you think they could be right for you. But if you can’t make it to the doctor’s office, you can also consult virtually with a derm from your phone!

Get a monthly chemical peel

If you are able to see a dermatologist but don’t want to take a drug on a regular basis, “another great preventive method is monthly in-office chemical peels,” Dr. Mark suggests. “These are ‘superficial’ peels where an acid or combo of acids is applied to the skin, that serves to exfoliate the dead layer of skin cells and unclog the pores.” Can’t make it to your derm (or find it too costly)? Try an at-home peel, like the PORE MEDIC Derma @ Home Peeling by Dr. Jart+ ($42 at Sephora)—the two-step process exfoliates, gently removes impurities and leaves skin clean and blemish-free.

Destress

We know—it’s probably easier said than done, but taking a breather can really go a long way when it comes to clear skin. So talk to a friend, online shop, do some yoga or walk around the block; your skin will thank you!

How should you treat a sudden breakout?

Try an over-the-counter cream or gel

One of the easiest ways to treat a breakout is to head to your local drugstore and pick up a cream or gel that contains benzoyl peroxide. Clean & Clear’s Persa-Gel ($6.99 at Ulta) is a good choice. This ingredient is an antiseptic that kills bacteria associated with acne.

Another alternative to benzoyl peroxide is salicylic acid, an exfoliating ingredient that unclogs the pores. That being said, to figure out which one is best for you, you may need to consult an expert. But whatever product you use, make sure to hydrate your skin regularly, as these harsh chemicals can dry it out—leading your skin to produce even more oil and causing more breakouts!

Go to the dermatologist

Once again, “if you have access and time, the best way to nip a flaring zit in the bud is go to the dermatologist for an injection of medicine,” Dr. Mark says. “It usually will be gone or at least much decreased within 24 hours.”

Do not pick at your skin

You’ve probably been told never to pick a pimple, and with good reason. “You will only increase the inflammation, make it more noticeable, and even increase the risk of scarring,” Dr. Mark says. So keep your hands away from your face—at all costs!

Try a home remedy

There are many home ingredients that you can use to treat a pimple. Blot your pimple with toothpaste or a crushed-up aspirin (you can mix it with water to create a paste) that you leave on overnight, or by day, you can try putting a dab of lemon juice on your pimple.

Try an overnight treatment

If you’re not convinced DIY methods will work and can’t afford to see a dermatologist in a pinch, why not try an overnight treatment? Use a Q-Tip to apply Mario Badescu’s famous Drying Lotion ($17 at Mario Badescu), which uses a formula of salicylic acid, calamine and other ingredients to eliminate pimples overnight. Or, stock up on Acne Absorbing Covers by Nexcare ($7.99 at Walgreens), which are essentially like little stickers you can leave on overnight to absorb oil and help battle your breakouts.

Sudden breakouts are annoying to say the least, and between late-night munchies and all-night study sessions, they happen way too often in college. But with these tips and tricks, you should be well equipped to get rid of those evil little spots.

6 Ways to Actually Have Fun at the Gym

$

For most collegiettes, the gym is probably not what you would consider your “happy place” (if it is, more power to you). At the gym, you’re in a perpetual state of being sticky and sweaty, you think everyone is judging you and you may feel the need to compete with the gym rat next to you who is running at lightning speed. You treat exercising there the same way you would homework: You know you should do it, but you dread every moment of the task. If this is your outlook, clearly it’s time to make a change! By following these tips, you’ll be on the road to making the gym your “happy place,” or at least something closer to it!

1. Set up a healthy reward system for yourself

Consistently working out can be tough for many of us to accomplish, so you should definitely celebrate when you meet your workout goal for the week. You don’t want to reward yourself with extra dessert and undo all of your hard work, so give yourself a reward that is just enough to make you feel happy and motivated to keep going.

Reward yourself by getting a mani or buying that cute clothing item you’ve been eyeing for a while. Set up a specific calendar that outlines how often you want to go to the gym and how you’re going to treat yourself.

2. Change up your workout playlist

Listening to the same 12 songs on your gym playlist can be helpful since you can build your workout around it, but eventually the songs will get dull. Every so often, switch up your playlist completely and try new artists. Spotify has tons of playlists you can listen to without a premium membership that cater to every workout —cardio, dancing, lifting, running and more.

You may even want to try listening to something other than music. Download an audiobook or subscribe to your favorite podcasts; that way, you can catch up on the book you haven’t had time to read or even listen to your favorite comedians.

Megan Shuffleton, a junior at Emerson College, says she often listens to audiobooks while exercising. “[Listening to audiobooks] lets me do two productive things at once, making me feel twice as good,” she says. “Plus, focusing on what the author or speaker is saying distracts me from thinking about when my workout will be over.”

3. Track your progress with gym selfies

Consider the gym selfie a newer and lighter spin on the typical mirror pics you see everyone take all the time! Snap a self-portrait each time you go to the gym to document your overall goal. Even if your overall reason for workout is to stay active and fit and not necessarily to lose weight, this option can still work for you.

If you’re feeling energetic and are having a successful workout, snap a pic with your biggest smile. If you’re having an off day, show it by making a frowning face in your selfie. By the time you reach your fitness goal, you can look back on your journey —you’ll be guaranteed a good laugh. If you’re feeling extra goofy, send your gym selfie of the day to your best buddies. Who knows, maybe it’ll become a new running joke between you and them, or maybe they’ll even join in!

4. Compete with your roommates

Use your competitive nature to your and your roomies’ advantage by creating friendly competition you can all partake in each month. Whether you keep logs on who hit the gym the most often per week or who spent the longest time at the gym per outing, set up some sort of prize for the winner. It can be something little, like a free pass from garbage duty for the next few weeks, or an iced coffee on each of your roommates. Just don’t get too out of hand; if you both hit your goals for the week, you can tie and treat each other!

5. Try a fitness app

Everyone knows it’s frowned upon to be chatting away on your phone while at the gym, but that doesn’t mean you have to stash your cell away completely. There are tons of fitness apps out there that will make you eager to hit the gym, like Nike+ Training Club, Moves and Zombies, Run! .

Kasia Jaworski, a senior at Villanova University, says she changes up her workouts by spending some time away from the machines and using Nike+ Training, which allows you to customize your routine and get inspired. “Sometimes I’ll find an open space or empty workout room and use [the app],” she says. “It’s kind of like a personal trainer on your phone.”

The best apps out there will do far more than remind you to exercise or tell you how many sets and reps of crunches you should do. Zombies, Run! is particularly fun because you’re placed in virtual chasing game where you’re running away from a mob of zombies. The interactive features will have your adrenaline pumping and your mind thinking you’re playing a video game!

6. Play a game with friends

Many universities have state-of-the-art recreation centers that have many different spaces you can exercise in, so don’t feel you always have to be glued to an exercise machine! Playing a game with friends is great option to try out if you’re really close with your floormates or if you want to fit in some extra socializing. Also, if you’re the type of person who hates the feeling of working out in a room full of strangers, this is a fun alternative.

Once you’ve gathered a group of friends, reserve a court or another open facility space where you can all work out by playing a group game like dodgeball or capture the flag. These grade-school games will not only bring back some intense nostalgia, but they’ll also whip you into shape —you’ll be surprised by how tired you are afterwards! Most university gyms have a policy detailing the minimum number of people you need and how far in advance you need to make a reservation, so check out your facility’s website. Though the policies vary from school to school, you’ll probably have to make a reservation two days in advance at the very least, so don’t just gather your friends on a whim!

For most of us, going to the gym feels like a big chore that we have to painstakingly do on a regular basis, but that’s probably because we commit ourselves to the same old boring regimens. By using these tips, you may actually end up looking forward to the next free time you can head to the gym!

Families Of Two Slain In Chicago Demand Police Reform

Chicago is on edge again after yet another police shooting resulted in an unarmed and completely accidental killing of an innocent person.

Bettie Jones, 55, was killed Saturday when police were called in to a two-story apartment in Chicago's West Side. Antonio LeGrier had called the police when his son Quintonio, 19, became violent and was banging on his door with a baseball bat in hand. Cops, unable to handle what they described as a "combative subject," opened fire on the second-floor apartment killing Legrier, but bullets from the gunfire exchange also killed Jones who was in the apartment below.

While the officer who shot Jones and LeGrier, both African American, has been placed on administrative duty and the Chicago Police Department and Mayor Rahm Emanuel have expressed their sympathy for this horrific accidental death, family members of both victims are demanding an overhaul of police training.

(The city of Chicago has been mired by police protests, many of which have shut down popular streets during the holiday season. Protestors simply want shootings lik that of Jones or Laquan Mcdonald to stop.)

“Why you’ve got to shoot first and ask questions later?” asked Jacqueline Walker, friend to the deceased Jones.

Relatives who have been stationed outside the house since the shooting began are asking for police to change the way they work with black residents, and undergo better training for dealing with mentally unstable subjects. In addition they want officers like the one involved in Saturday's incident to be subject to harsher punishment for what they deem excessive force.

“You call for help, and the police are supposed to serve us and protect us, and yet they take the lives,” said Janet Cooksey, mother of Quintonio LeGrier. “What’s wrong with that picture? It’s a badge to kill?”

17 College Women Share Their New Year’s Resolutions

Only 3 more days left in 2015! It’s crunch time for setting a 2016 resolution — and these 17 college women have already figured out what they want to work on in the New Year.

Check out their resolutions — and get inspired for your own — below!

“My New Year's Resolution for 2016 is to remember to take time for myself. I'm a pretty busy little bee, so my nights of ‘relaxation’ in 2015 usually just consisted of taking a hot shower and passing out around 8:30. In 2016, I hope I'll be able to spend some time really loving myself in the form of facials, new pajamas, and the occasional day off.”

-Olivia, University of North Carolina Wilmington Class of 2018

“My resolution for 2016 is to not wear sweat pants and workout attire outside of the gym. I will only allow myself to wear workout clothes on the weekend. I believe this will help build up my confidence.”

-Tamiracle, University of South Florida St. Petersburg Class of 2017

RELATED: Step Up Your Confidence Game in 2016

“My New Year's resolution is to realize that everything happens for a reason, focus on what is in my control and what I can do to be better, and not to sweat the things I cannot change. Hopefully doing so will lessen the stress.”

-Jane, Fordham University Class of 2019

“I didn't end this year with some of the people I started it with. Unfortunately people grow apart for the most superficial and unimportant reasons. However by the end of this year, I've finished it with the most important people in my life and that's all that matters. That makes my New Year's resolution is to always be open to making new friends, to be forgiving, and to be understanding. It's impossible to predict which people you meet could be potential friends for life, especially in college. I look forward to seeing how my relationships will develop next year.”

-Kathryn, SUNY Oneota Class of 2018

“I have the biggest sweet tooth. I think it's a serious problem because sometimes I'll even order dessert before my entrée at restaurants. Since I won't be 22 forever, I know it's best for my long-term health to be a lot more careful with what I put into my body so that I won't get diabetes or any other serious disorders. So my New Year's resolution is to cut out sweets for 21 days. I read several articles stating that it takes 21 days to break a habit. So starting January 1st I'll be giving up cookies, brownies, cupcakes, chocolate, milkshakes, ice cream — basically everything worth living. Wish me luck!”

-Rachel, Virginia Commonwealth University Class of 2016

“This year I've decided to, as Melissa Fabello says in her video on diet culture, forgo the resolution and focus on some revolution instead. I want to use my power to make my aspiring dream of becoming an activist for the LGBTQ community happen.”

-Jessica, Montclair State University Class of 2017

“My New Year's resolution is to find a career in 2016 that I am excited and passionate about. I'd also love to allow myself to let go a little, and realize that if I don't find my dream job in 2016, things will be okay. I had really high standards for myself in 2015, and it led to me feeling a little let down when I wasn't able to make it all happen. I'm young, and doing quite a lot, and I need to give myself the opportunity to fail and be confused for a while.”

-Alaina, Emerson College Class of 2017

“This year, my New Year's resolution is to continue to learn and grow in my style of martial arts (Uechi-Ryu Karate). I want to pass my first degree black belt test and walk at the black belt graduation in April. I also want to gain muscle mass. I'm in relatively good shape but I know there is room to improve my strength. I would like to break 100 lbs by the time I graduate at the black belt ceremony.”

-Moriah, Salem State University Class of 2019

“My New Year's resolution is to think of others before myself. The past year I realized how much my friends do for me, and how little I do for them. I want to start making more of an effort.”

-Nicolette, University of Illinois Class of 2017

“My resolution is to actively search out opportunities to enhance my life instead of passively sitting by and waiting them to come to me. In short, I resolve to be more proactive.”

-Rachel, San Francisco State University Class of 2017

“I resolve to create my own happiness and not let other people be so influential on my self worth.”

“I'm focusing on my career this year. I'm done with distractions, bad attitudes, and of course boys who aren't worth my time. I've reached a point in my life where I know where I want to be and I'm going to be driven and dedicated to better myself and become the woman who I'm meant to be. So this year I will continue doing what I love, applying for jobs and internships, and creating a better version of me, for me. I'm ready for my bright future ahead and will be grateful for every opportunity that this year will bring.”

“I plan on giving more time to my sweet Grandma. So Grandma, be prepared for once a week calls from me!”

-Emilie, University of Utah Class of 2017

“My New Year's resolution is to try to love myself more in all senses of the word. Self-love will include learning to forgive myself for my mistakes, being honest with myself as well as resolving any pre-existing internal conflicts.”

-Angela, Stony Brook University Class of 2018

“I want to be a dedicated yoga practitioner again! During my senior year of high school, I would spend an hour or two a day doing hot yoga at a studio near my home in Southern California (I know, the cliché is strong with this one). During those two months I was so strong and balanced and overall just so at peace. I went to my first hot yoga class in years the other week and decided to take advantage of their new student deal to kick start 2016. I can't wait to see how much yoga I can squeeze in in the next 40 days!”

-Jenna, Drexel University Class of 2019

“My New Year's resolution is to speak up on things that I see are wrong more often. I've learned that staying silent when witnessing or hearing injustices, whether on a large or small scale, is harmful and contributes to the problem. Calling people out and educating them on their mistakes is something I plan on doing in 2016 more often.”

-Kayla, Temple University Class of 2020

“I want to make Dean's List for both the Spring 2016 and Fall 2016 semesters.”

5 Signs Your Significant Other Really Loves You

There is something about the holidays that really makes us feel the love and be overwhelmed with gratitude for the special people in our lives. From ice skating while holding hands to warm nights cuddled up with hot cocoa to a perfect New Year’s kiss, this time of year makes our hearts grow three sizes. While we know our hearts are swollen with love for our significant others, how do we know they are feeling the same way? We asked Dr. Carole LiebermanM.D., Beverly Hills psychiatrist, to find out. Here are some sure fire ways to know if your beau loves you more than the sun, the moon and all the stars.

1. They make time for you

Though it may seem simple, making a consistent effort to make time for you shows how much someone cares for you and enjoys your presence. We’re not talking about someone calling you every Saturday night at 3 a.m. kind of consistent, we’re talking about someone who makes time for you even when they don’t have it. Someone who truly cares about you will go out of their way to see you, even if it’s just for half an hour between classes during finals week.

Dr. Lieberman says that someone “always trying to persuade you to get together—and not just for sex” is a sign someone is sincerely into you. Someone who truly loves you will make small excuses to see you just because. In truth, they don’t need a reason. Wanting to spend time with you is more than enough.

2. They truly listen

Whether it’s listening to you rave about your new favorite band or complain about a teacher you aren’t getting along with, someone who really loves you will listen to you fully without judgment or distraction. And they don’t listen because they have to, they listen because they want to and they genuinely care about your feelings, thoughts and ideas. There is nothing more exciting than seeing a loved one’s eyes sparkle when they talk about something they love and nothing more special than hearing a loved one open up to you about something painful for them that most people don’t know. These moments foster the special connection that couples who truly love one another have. Dr. Lieberman tells us that in the moment, you can tell they are truly listening if they look you in the eye and respond to us in a way that shows they’re thinking about you.

"If they return what you said in future conversations, or take action on something you mentioned that you would like, this is proof that they cared about what you were saying," Dr. Lieberman says. When someone truly listens, they’ll remember the little details that even you forgot about. Sarah Hong, a senior at the University of Michigan, says that she feels particularly loved when her significant other “remembers the smallest details, things even I wasn’t paying attention to.” It shows that they care about what she has to say, and that they were fully present when they were hanging out. In a time where it’s easy to get sucked into Instagram or distracted by Netflix, it’s hard to find something as comforting as someone who stays with you in the moment and listens to what you have to say wholeheartedly.

3. They care for you when you’re sick

They don’t need to be at your bedside with a cold washcloth and ibuprofen, but when you’re sick they are sincerely sorry and ask if there is anything they can do to help. Maybe they send simple texts throughout the day to ask how you’re feeling or maybe they stop by and bring you soup, saltines and ginger ale. Dr. Lieberman says, "Some small gestures commonly used to express love can be anything from a hug, to bringing you chicken soup when you’re sick.” These gestures are seemingly small, but when you’re feeling low they can mean the world.

Someone who really loves you wants the best for you mentally, physically and emotionally. Josephine Brown, a freshman at the University of Michigan, says that her boyfriend choosing to hang out with her when she’s sick “even if something big was going on that night that he was missing” would really show his dedication to her.

4. They care about the little things

Someone who truly loves you cares about the little things, like how you like your coffee or whether you like to study with or without music on. It’s these little details that make you who you are and because they care for you fully, they care about finding each and every one of these little details out.

Colin, a sophomore at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, says, "Anyone can be pleased by a nice dinner—you don’t know if you’re loved by that or not." But when his girlfriend brought him a fan, which he likes to have on as he sleeps, to make him comfortable when he stayed the night after a family fight, it showed him how much she loves him. It meant a lot to him that she paid attention to something as small as liking a fan on before going to bed and proved to him just how much she cares.

Dr. Lieberman tells us we’ll know if they truly appreciate the little things about us and the little things we do for them if the person smiles genuinely, says thank you “and then does some sweet little thing for you in return.” Relationships are all about give and take, and appreciating and savoring these moments are what makes it all worth it.

5. They tell you they love you

Though it’s easy to be shy about your feelings, when you truly love someone you can’t hold it in. Someone who really loves you will tell you—not only once, but probably a hundred times. Some of those hundred will be with words, and some will be with actions. The actions don’t always have to be extravagant like a bouquet of roses—Dr. Lieberman tells us that sometimes it can be as simple as hug. She continues to say that “putting in a lot of effort into making your dates special” or “texting you cute messages that make you smile just to let you know they’re thinking about you” are ways that your significant other lets you know they love you without saying it outright. Although, we do love to hear those three little words!

While there are ways your significant other can express their love for you such as bringing you soup when you’re sick or sending you a simple text message to remind you they’re thinking about you, when they truly love you, you’ll just know. Whether it’s from the sparkle in their eyes or a smile they can’t contain, their love for you will be written all over their face. And when you find a love that true, make sure to show them you love them just as much, and don’t let them go.
