Jennifer Lawrence Admits She Has Confidence Issues

If there’s one person we can think of who seems carefree and comfortable in her own skin, it’s probably Jennifer Lawrence. But the Oscar-winning Hunger Games star, who has quickly become a household name and one of the world’s most sought-after actresses, showed a more vulnerable side in a recent interview with The New York Times. She admitted that she doesn’t always feel quite as confident as her larger-than-life personality might suggest.

When asked about how she’s changed in the few short years since she achieved worldwide fame, she responded: “I don’t feel like I’m being dragged by anything anymore. I feel more in control. I’m calmer. I know that there’s no point to feeling anxious all day, so I try not to. I’m still scared, but it’s about different things. Now, I worry about — [Trails off and shifts a bit uncomfortably on the sofa.] O.K., get ahold of yourself, Jennifer. This is not therapy.”

Her interviewer, Brooks Barnes, prompted her to continue. “You want to know how I’ve changed? I’m so scared to say anything now. I can see every negative way that people can take it, and I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining. ‘Oh, she’s so conceited now. Oh, she’s so jaded now.’ It probably comes from Googling myself. If it were up to me, I would not talk. I would just act.”

Wait, Jennifer Lawrence Googles herself? Isn’t that, like, the number one thing most celebrities say they shouldn’t and won’t do? “You try being 22, having a period and staying away from Google,” she said. “I once Googled ‘Jennifer Lawrence Ugly.’ [Laughs] Do I sound bitchy?”

Honestly, though, who hasn’t Googled themselves, or taken any extra measure just to try and find out what people think of them? It’s like when Formspring was all the rage in middle school—we all knew that by signing up we were just asking for hurt feelings and information we’d end up wishing we never knew, but we couldn’t resist. Perhaps the destructive behavior is not our need to know how people truly see us—good, bad, or ugly—although we certainly wish we could go without it. Perhaps it’s people’s need to share their opinions about others—often people they don’t even really know—on a public forum like the Internet. What does anyone have to gain from calling Jennifer Lawrence, or anyone else for that matter, “ugly”?

So, in answer to your question, Jennifer: no, you don’t sound bitchy at all. It’s how anyone in the world would react to being scrutinized to such an extreme level—and most of us wouldn’t handle it as well as you do. “I’m going to leave here and think, Oh God, why couldn’t I just have been cool and confident?” she said of the interview. But take it from us, J-Law, it’s candid, genuine, grounded moments like these that make you the absolute coolest.

'The Mindy Project' Premiere, as told by Kelly from 'The Office'

The day we’ve all been waiting for is finally here. The Mindy Project premiere is officially on Hulu! Here’s a breakdown of the episode’s top moments, narrated by The Office’s Kelly Kapoor—because naturally she’d have a lot to say about it.

The premiere picked up right where the season three finale left off, with Danny showing up to meet Mindy’s parents in India.

And while we hoped he was there to ask permission to propose, he really wants to convince them of something else entirely—he loves Mindy but marriage is just not for him.

While Danny is conveniently spooked by Mindy’s dad and decides to pretend he’s simply Mindy’s concerned co-worker, Dr. L is dreaming of an alternate universe where Joseph Gordon-Levitt—or as he exists here, Real Housewives producer Matt—is her husband. And Mindy thinks this is pretty much her perfect life.

Back in the real world, her parents are setting up an arranged marriage. Hoping to track down Dr. C and knock some sense into him, Morgan arrives in India—after a brief detour in Pakistan. But once he realizes Danny is lying to Mindy’s parents, he provides the perfect candidate for their daughter: a hot Indian widower who used to tour as a dancer with Michael Jackson.

But although Mindy is loving married life in her dream, she finds it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Because she and Matt have an open relationship, and she’s sleeping with Brendan Deslaurier.

And to beat it all, Danny is dating Freida Pinto.

Mindy realizes she and Danny are meant to be together—even in her alternate reality dream, and she admits this to him.

Sadly, Danny runs and Mindy is hit by a bus, waking from her Sliding Doors-esque dream.

Danny—having convinced Mindy’s parents he will love their daughter regardless of whether they’re married or not—is waiting there for her… with an engagement ring!

Turns out, it took meeting Mindy's parents—happily married for 40 years—for Dr. Dan to realize he’s willing to give that whole husband thing another go. Which means we’re getting a WEDDING!

Did you love the Mindy premiere as much as we did, collegiettes?

Having grown up with glossy pages and The Devil Wears Prada, many of us have big dreams of becoming fashion editors. Sure, Andy's tumultuous path to the top was filled with long hours, a (very) demanding boss and many unglamorous moments, but the job certainly has some undeniable perks. Here's a peek into that exclusive world:

1. You get a first look at EVERY top designer's collections

Not only are you getting covetable front-row invites to every fashion show, you also get the opportunity to make one-on-one appointments with designers throughout the year to get a glimpse at what's new not this season... but next. That's a whole new level of chic.

2. You get to travel to the fashion capitols of the world

Paris? Don't mind if we do. If Karl Lagerfeld somehow forgot to invite you to the Chanel show, though, don't worry, we are sending you an invite to College Fashion Week this October! We'll be making stops in some of the hottest cities in America: Boston, New York City, Washington, DC and Atlanta!

3. Two words: Free. Stuff.

Psst—here's the secret to every well-dressed fashion editor. There's no shortage of designer bags (many of which designers might even name after you), racks filled with clothes... you get the idea. You'll enjoy the same perks at College Fashion Week; the first 500 attendees in each city will score goodie bags with free stuff from Simon Malls, Luna, Skinny Pop, Shake Shack and so much more!

4. You'll have the most enviable Instagram feed

Hundreds of likes per photo? Standard. Every fashion editor's Instagram feed is FULL of backstage beauty snaps, videos straight from the runway, an inside look at what it's really like to work at a magazine... is that real life?!

5. You get to rub shoulders with some of the fashion elite

If you're a top fashion editor, you sit front row with Anna Wintour. If you're Anna Wintour, you sit front row with the entire Beckham family. We don't see a way to lose.

5 Surprising Cities to Start Your Career

$

New York City, D.C., Los Angeles — we all know the hottest cities to flock to after graduation.

The pressure to relocate to one of these classic places can be overwhelming, but many of us —whether it’s because of a lack of funds or an aversion to densely populated areas — might feel a bit apprehensive about making the move.

Rest easy! These aren’t the only places you can go to jump-start your post-college career. There are a host of smaller cities that offer just as many great opportunities that you might not have thought to consider. We did our research and spoke to some graduettes to bring you a list of cities to keep on your radar as you begin the infamous job hunt.

1. Birmingham, Alabama

Population: 200,000

Average rent (one-bedroom apartment): $660

Prominent industries: health care, education, finance

Livability, an online resource that researches American communities, lists Birmingham in its ranking of the top 10 best downtowns. The area is continuing to progress: Several projects involving renovation and housing — like the development of new residential spaces surrounding Regions Field — are helping to bring people downtown.

Jaime Ritter, a graduate from the University of Alabama at Birmingham who currently lives and works in Birmingham as a journalist, says this is her favorite part about the city.

“I love watching it constantly grow and evolve,” she says. “It’s come such a long way in the five years I’ve lived here, and I can’t wait to see what else it has in store!”

Health care is a major industry, thanks to UAB and its attached hospital, one of the area’s largest employers. Education and finance are also highly popular, with around 20 percent of the female population of Birmingham employed in both of these industries.

Move here if: You’re looking to ease into the post-college lifestyle.

According to Area Vibes, Birmingham has a cost of living that’s about 17.2 percent lower than the national average. This is great for recent grads trying to establish a career.

“Every place was completely affordable and inclusive,” says HC alumna Elana. “I never had to worry about not getting a reservation at a restaurant or being priced out of a place.”

Compared to more expensive cities, Birmingham could be the perfect place for those of you stepping out on your own for the first time!

2. Columbus, Ohio

Population: 800,000

Average rent (one-bedroom apartment): $698

Prominent industries: education, health care, arts/entertainment

Columbus stands is one of the most populated cities in the U.S., ahead of other metropolitan areas like Seattle, Miami and Boston, making it the perfect place for collegiettes looking to mingle.

“Most people wouldn’t think of this city in Ohio as a place to start their career or life, but it is actually a super fun and exciting place to be,” says Malone Ryan, a sophomore at John Carroll University in Ohio. “There is always something new to do in Columbus, no matter what type of person you are. From art museums to cultural festivals and more, you will never get bored here.”

Move here if: You have a passion for fashion.

“Columbus is an up-and-coming major fashion hot spot,” Malone says. “The city embraces all kinds of styles, people and walks of life and is a great place to start your career.”

Columbus is home to over 500 fashion designers, and the headquarters of many popular brands are located in the city or close nearby, including Abercrombie & Fitch, Victoria’s Secret and Express — the perfect hub for any fashion-forward professional. The city ranks third in fashion employment, right behind New York and San Francisco, making it one of America’s leading boutique districts. As a result, many companies are looking to expand in the area: ELOQUII Design, Inc., is currently taking steps to complete a sevenfold increase in the number of jobs added to its Columbus branch by 2017.

3. Nashville, Tennessee

Population: 620,000

Average rent (one-bedroom apartment): $1,048

Prominent industries: education, music/entertainment

This Southern music hotspot ranked in the top five cities in the nation for the highest levels of job creation. Nashville has a growth rate expected to outpace the national average by 2017, with an estimated 140,000 new jobs to be created by 2018.

“It is such a fun city and growing so fast,” says Erica Barrett, an alumna of the University of Massachusetts Amherst who has lived in Nashville. “There are so many opportunities, and not just in music. The nightlife is a blast, they have tons of sporting leagues and clubs for young singles, there are lots of networking opportunities in the community and I found it to be a true melting pot — my friends were from everywhere!”

Move here if: You’re looking to break in to the music industry.

While other opportunities are available, Nashville is the perfect city for collegiettes interested in a career in music. Erica cites this as the reason for her move to the city after she graduated: “I knew I wanted to work in [the music industry], but didn’t want the fast-paced life of NYC or LA. It was an amazing place to begin my career, and I was able to do everything they did in the larger hubs career-wise.”

Music in Nashville is a billion-dollar industry that has led to a host of opportunities in several related fields, such as recording studios, booking agencies and publishing companies, so the musically inclined who are looking to make it big should pack a bag and head down south.

4. Atlanta, Georgia

Population: 450,000

Average rent (one-bedroom apartment): $962

Prominent industries: business/finance, arts/entertainment

Metro Atlanta has seen a huge increase in jobs in the past few years. Home to Delta Air Lines, UPS, Coca-Cola and the media conglomerate Turner Broadcasting, the city ranks fourth in the nation in hosting the most Fortune 500 companies.

This major transportation hub is home to the world’s busiest airport, making Atlanta one of America’s premiere international cities, as well as a global business and trade center. Over 1,300 foreign-based businesses have operations in the area, employing over 81,000 people.

Move here if: You want to be a star of the silver screen.

Move over, Hollywood. With hits like The Walking Dead and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire shutting down city streets, Atlanta is a booming market for film and television production.

In 2013 alone, the city invested in 142 film and TV projects, spending almost $940 million in the process. The reason? Tax breaks. The state of Georgia offers tax credits to companies spending at least $500,000 on production. In addition, the state’s official Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Office lists cast and crew jobs on its website, as well as Facebook and Twitter.

These incentives draw companies to the area: Pinewood Studios, which is based in the UK, recently opened an Atlanta branch in 2014. Moreover, this increase also brings job opportunities in related fields, such as catering, equipment supply and transportation.

“Atlanta has the talents and the resources to become the next major movie hub,” says Marisa Tontaveetong, an alumna of the Savannah College of Art and Design. “It’s heading that way right now.” If you’re looking for your next big break, then Atlanta is definitely the place to be.

5. Research Triangle Park (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill), North Carolina

Population: 2,700,000

Average rent (one-bedroom apartment): $750

Prominent industries: research and development, technology, medicine

This region gets its name from the three universities that mark its boundaries: Duke University, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Triangle surrounds the cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.

Research Triangle Park (RTP) was founded in 1959 and is now one of the largest research parks in the world. RTP is home to over 170 companies, including Cisco, United Therapeutics and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Current development plans hope to add up to 100,000 jobs to the area.

Move here if: You want to make a major scientific discovery.

The Triangle is a leading center of research and development in America. Almost $300 million is invested each year for research and development at the Triangle’s universities, in fields as diverse as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, innovative technologies and advanced medical care.

Ashley Xu, an alumna of the Ohio State University, had an invaluable opportunity working in the Triangle. “I had a great experience at Duke Hospital because it’s one of the nation’s best trauma centers,” she says. “It provided me with a variety of educational opportunities involving rare diseases and first-rate technological advances.”

If you want to be on the cutting edge of science and technology, the Triangle should definitely be on your list.

You don’t have to move to the classic big cities to succeed in your career, collegiettes! A lot of amazing opportunities can be found in places that fly just under the radar. They may not have the historic glamour of New York or Los Angeles, but if you want to save money, are interested in a niche field or simply prefer a more laid-back lifestyle, then these cities definitely have something to offer. Keep these surprising places in mind as you begin your post-collegiette job search!

Emma Watson's New Movie is the Ultimate Girl Power Film

$
0
0

We’d totally be counting down the days until Emma Watson’s new movie comes out—if only it had a US release date. Colonia, which had its world premiere on September 13th at the Toronto International Film Festival, takes place during the coup of Augusto Pinochet in Chile in 1973. It stars Watson as Lena, a woman whose lover (Daniel Brühl) is abducted by Pinochet’s forces and taken to a religious cult, Colonia Dignidad. In order to get him back, Lena decides to go undercover and join the cult herself. No damsels in distress here!

It’s no secret that Emma Watson is a staunch feminist, so it’s no wonder she’d choose a role like this one. Since the Harry Potter era ended, that actress has conjured up a resume that Hermione herself would be proud of. If the Toronto Film Festival generates enough buzz, it’s likely a US release for the movie will be in the near future. We can only hope that it lives up to the trailer, which you can check out below!

4 Chic (& Easy!) Dorm Room Decor Ideas from DIY Guru Erica Domesek

$

Decorating your dorm, though totally necessary, can be such a daunting task. Not only do you want your dorm décor to express your personality and show off your fabulous taste, but you have to make sure your design scheme doesn't clash with your roommate's—not to mention, buying your decorations can be super expensive! Can you say cha-ching?

Fortunately, there are ways to make decorating your dorm room easier on you (and your wallet). We spoke to lifestyle expert and DIY guru Erica Domesek, founder of the popular book, brand and website P.S. I Made This... about easy, inexpensive ways that you can make your own DIY decorations for your dorm room or apartment this year.

Project 1: Geode Accessory Rack

When you think about decorating your space, what is one of the first things that comes to mind? Storage, of course! You need solutions for where to put all of your stuff, and ideally, you'd prefer if those solutions were cute. Thankfully, the first project that Erica has to share offers an easy way to store and display all of your favorite accessories.

"We're all going to school and wearing fun jewelry, but we don't have a lot of space to actually store it," Erica says. "So you can actually kind of kill two birds with one stone. You can store your jewelry and also have a beautiful piece to display on a wall or even a shelf."

Not into the geode rock look? Erica mentions that you can also use a dresser drawer pull! She shows off an antique-looking crystal knob that could likely be found at a thrift store or hardware store near you.

"You can hang anything from your headphones to your necklaces, and the whole thing about dorms is that you can't nail things in, so this is a great project because you can actually adhere it to the wall using Command hooks," Erica says.

You can watch the video at the bottom of the article to see Erica explain how to create this gorgeous geode accessory rack; otherwise, you can find the tutorial on P.S. I Made This... here!

Project 2: Studded Box

Speaking of storage, where are you supposed to keep all of the stuff in your dorm that you don't want to be on display? Instead of shoving it all under your bed or into your dresser drawers, your best bet is to keep your stuff organized using storage boxes. You don't have to spend extra money on fancy storage boxes from home decor stores—just find a few old shoe boxes and either spray paint them or cover them in paper in your favorite color. After that, all you need are some upholstery nails and thumbtacks in your favorite metallic shade!

"Most of these projects are something that a novice crafter could do. It doesn't matter how much experience you have," Erica says. "Even the idea of taking simple nail heads and putting them into a plain white cardboard box to make a cool pattern on them—that's something anybody can do."

Though this project is pretty straightforward, you can find Erica's expanded tutorial on P.S. I Made This... here.

Project 3: Feather Art

Now that you've figured out where to store all of your prized possessions, it's time to think about adding some personality and pizazz to your walls. As you've probably realized, buying wall décor, whether in store or online, can take a real toll on your bank account. Instead of spending your precious shopping money on art to spruce up your space, why not make your own?

"We're all trying to think, 'How do we make our walls come to life and have them be really cool?' So this adds a lot of color, dimension, and it's also just a really bold conversation piece," Erica says.

All you'll need for this project is your favorite hues of spray paint (add a metallic tone at the ends like Erica did for extra dimension!), craft feathers, scissors, glue, a piece of foam core and a frame. You can watch the video at the bottom of the article to see Erica explain how she made this chic work of art, or you can see the original tutorial on P.S. I Made This... here.

Project 4: Chrome Planters

Now that your walls are looking chic and you've got plenty of cute storage space, the last thing that you need is an adorable way to dress up your desk. Don't worry, Erica has a fantastic idea for that, too—and it's the simplest project on this list!

"The idea to always have plants near you, it's a scientific fact, it will make you a happier person," Erica says. But she mentions that since dorm rooms don't have the best lighting, it can be hard to figure out what to keep and grow. Spending money to buy flowers every week can be too expensive, so what's a collegiette to do?

"I vote on succulents," Erica says. "They're really easy to take care of, they're pretty inexpensive and they look great. The only thing that's not so great is the planter they come in."

Since succulents usually come in a plastic or terra cotta container in a black or green shade, they're not always thought of when it comes to dorm decor. But all you need is a can of metallic spray paint (Erica chose to go with chrome, but you could do copper or gold if you wanted to!) to transform these cute little plants into the cutest addition to your desk or window sill.

If you're wondering where you can find all of the tools and materials you'll need to complete these projects, Erica has an answer for you. "I partnered with True Value because it's my go-to stop for basically anything and everything you need," Erica says. "Everything you see here for the most part you can get at True Value—and also, you can probably find a lot of this stuff at home! That's typically what I like to do."

Shannon Lamb, a man suspected in the shooting deaths of his girlfriend as well Delta State University history professor Ethan Schmidt, was found dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday night. Lamb was also a professor at Delta State.

University police chief Lynn Buford told the New York Times that Lamb ran into a wooded area after being pulled over by police, and that a gunshot was heard soon after. Lamb was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Delta State campus ended its lockdown early Tuesday morning. The Clarion-Ledger reports that more than 70 students, faculty and staff are attending counseling sessions in the aftermath of the incident, and that the university plans to resume classes Wednesday.

The First Trailer for 'The Divergent Series: Allegiant' is Here!

The newest installment in The Divergent Series may not be hitting theaters until March 18th of next year, but it’s never too soon to get amped up. That’s exactly what we’ve been doing ever since the first trailer for the film was released earlier today.

The teaser opens up with clips from the previous Divergent and Insurgent movies. There are also plenty of fresh tidbits to enjoy, though. In addition to snagging a peek at Tris’s slightly longer 'do, you can see what appears to be a scene strangely reminiscent of a faction reunion, with Four, Christina, Peter, Caleb, and Tori teaming up with the leading lady to scale the mythical wall and discover what lies on the other side—looks like a whole lot of red stuff, in our professional opinion.

And while the author of Allegiant, Veronica Roth, recently voiced mild concerns for changes the studio is making to the final act of her beloved series, we can count on one major thing to stay the same. In true Tris fashion, before the trailer comes to an entirely-too-soon close, she gets yet another opportunity to save the world. It’s all in a day’s work for this B.A. heroine.

Are You Ready to "Dislike" Posts on Facebook?

Mark Zuckerberg revealed Tuesday that a Facebook “dislike” button is in the works.

During a question and answer session, Zuckerberg said that the feature is close to being ready for testing, according to CNBC. He clarified that the button should be used to empathize, not to be a jerk.

“We don't want to turn Facebook into a forum where people are voting up or down on people's posts,” Zuckerberg said at the session. "That doesn't seem like the kind of community that we want to create: You don't want to go through the process of sharing some moment that was important to you in your day and have someone ‘downvote’ it.”

What do you think, collegiettes? Would you use a “dislike” button? And would you want other people to use it on you?

8 Reasons to Be Excited for H&M's Fall Beauty Launch

Months ago, H&M announced that they would be releasing a cosmetics line this fall. Well, that time has finally come and in just a couple short days, the full collection will be revealed to us all. When we first heard about it, many thoughts ran through our heads. We were definitely excited because who doesn't love H&M? Their clothes and accessories are affordable and trendy. And now cosmetics? These are the things we are definitely excited for—and you should be too!

1. There are 700 pieces! Fragrance, hair, makeup, bodycare, makeup tools. Let us reiterate: 700 different pieces.

2. There will be 20 different foundation shades. We'll have options from the lightest of the light and the darkest of the dark, meaning this collection is incredibly inclusive. Plus, H&M will provide a color wheel so that you can correctly match foundation and concealer to your skin tone.

3. They're switching up how we think of neutrals. They're going to have a myriad of colors (remember, there will be 700 pieces in this collection) and instead of your basic neutral eye, add a dash of color that is made to look in sync with your other colors.

4. The names are simple and self-explanatory. Clean Canvas Lip Scrub. No need to ask what it is.

5. Or they are extremely dreamy. Midnight Muse. If you don't feel sexy after misting yourself, then maybe try the Rose Reverie or Urban Verve.6. EVERYTHING is affordable! There's nothing in this line that exceeds $13. If you buy each of of the 700 pieces, the most you can spend is $9,100... which, let's be real, for hundreds of makeup products, isn't bad. Compare that to buying 700 things at Sephora. This two-in-one brush? Only $7.

7. And each product is packaged so sleekly and beautifully. Prestige brand packaging with drugstore pricing. Look at the gold casing! We're freaking out!

8. It launches on September 17 (Online, that is. You'll find it in stores Oct 1!) We don't have to wait that much longer for this collection. And that is the most exciting part. Christmas just came early for beauty lovers.

What are you most excited for?

Here's why.

1. Your bed will neither leave you nor forsake you. (It literally can’t move.)

2. Even if you and your bed go through a rough patch (insomnia), you always find your way back to each other.

3. When you think of your bed during the daylight hours, you're immediately filled with intense longing.

4. If your bed is your boyfriend, your alarm clock is probably that annoying girl who you’re convinced is always trying to take him away from you.

5. Sharing your bed with anyone else is something that you just aren’t willing to do.

6. Instead of curling up on the couch after school or work, you slip into your bed and tell it your day’s woes.

7. Your pillow has seen more tears than your mom, sister or dog.

8. The outside world is frigid, but the comfort of your sleepy haven fills you with warmth and security.

9. Literally nothing can get you to part from your bed in the mornings. Or during afternoon naps. Or when you’re just lying there, reading Cosmo and wishing the rest of the world would leave you in peace.

10. Your bed encourages you to participate in your favorite activity, and it never scoffs at your love of sleeping.

11. You will probably name your firstborn child Clinomania.

12. You have a pet name for your bed.

13. Date night for you is basically like date night for anyone else. You cuddle with your SO, watch movies and eat a romantic meal. Except your SO is your bed, so you’re cuddling with blankets, watching Fargo by yourself and eating a king-size bag of Swedish Fish. And it’s awesome.

14. “Work from home” = “Work from bed”

15. You aren't afraid to be yourself around your bed — no makeup, no problem!

What a wonderful place to lay our heads.

55 Thoughts Every Girl Has on a First Date

$

In college, all we wanted was to be asked on a real date. We threatened to swear off booty calls and hookups forever, waiting for that one Prince Charming who would sweep us off our feet and take us out to dinner. Now, in the real world, the opportunity to date actually presents itself fairly often, and we're all "please don't make me go!"“You mean we have to talk to each other? Sober?”

First dates are arguably the most unique (read: awkward) experiences we will ever encounter, each complete with their own set of highs and lows, failures and successes. Here are some of the many thoughts that will likely pass through your mind the next time you find yourself across the table from a complete stranger you met on an iPhone app.

1. It's 7:03. Does three minutes constitute fashionably late?

2. This place looks fancy. I'm underdressed.

3. No, it's cool. I'll look chill, like I just threw this on and look effortlessly fabulous.

4. 7:06, all right, I'm going in.

5. He's cute, from all the way over here at least.

6. He doesn't look like a serial killer.

7. He's already sitting. Dammit, I needed to analyze his height compared to mine!

8. Handshake? Hug? Kiss on the cheek? SOS!

9. Why am I so awkward? It pains me.

10. I've forgotten how to speak.

11. Say anything.

12. The weather? Really? That's the best you could do.

13. It's okay he's smiling. Just breathe.

14. He's cuter than his pics actually. Bonus points.

15. Okay, let's cover the basics: work, hometown, college attended, siblings.

16. Just pretend you don't already know everything about him from stalking social media. Act surprised. Not too surprised.

17. Thank god the waitress is here. Saved by the menu!

18. I want everything in the "snacks" section. Self control!

19. Umm, yes I'll split the fries! I thought you'd never ask. #soulmates

20. This is going well.

21. Does he think it's going well?

22. We’ve had hardly any awkward pauses!

23. Am I talking too much?

24. Omg he hates me.

25. Nice, the food's here. Try not to look too excited.

26. Okay, it's really hard to eat and avoid lulls in the conversation at the same time.

27. What if I'm an ugly eater?

28. I kind of have to pee.

29. Why did I wear a romper?!

30. I'm going to hold it.

31. He’s pretty funny.

32. Wait, was that a joke, though? I don't want to laugh if he was serious, and I can't not laugh if he's trying to be funny.

33. So the obvious solution is to make a creepy half-snort/half-grunt. Nice going.

34. Great, he’s going to the bathroom. Now, I can check my phone and actually eat my food in peace.

35. Wow, we survived an hour already.

36. Selfie check. I still look cute!

37. Has he been in the bathroom a while?

38. Maybe he has stomach issues? Or he's climbing out the window?

39. Ahh, he’s coming back. Don’t stare!

40. Hopefully he doesn’t notice that I just shoved my face while he was gone.

41. Another drink? YAASSSS.

42. Is he playing footsie with me? Nope. That’s the guy at the table next to us. Cool.

43. I do think he’s flirting though. He’s laughing at all my jokes. I’m not that funny.

44. I kind of like this guy. But who am I to say? Have to debrief w/ my BFF (and my mom) later.

45. Oh sh*t! The bill! Dun dun dun...

46. Let me grab my purse and at least pretend to try and pay.

47. Well, it was worth a try.

48. He just spent so much money on me! What if he’s thinking I’m not worth it?

49. No, this does not mean I have to put out. Have some self-respect, woman!

50. He wants to walk me home? Aww, what a gentleman.

51. We’re getting dangerously close to my building. What’s it going to be??

52. Just be cool. Follow his lead.

53. There's not even a name for the part of my face he just kissed. Somewhere in the no man’s land between my cheek and my lips. Yep.

54. Did he really mean “let’s do this again soon”?

55. Can't wait to go home and recount every minute of this night to my roomie while I await his text.

9 Things to Do at a Potential College's Overnight Stay

Taking part in a “Sleeping Bag Weekend" -- an overnight stay at a potential college, often with a current student --  is a beyond-amazing way to see if a school is the right fit for you. Make sure you know what to look for and the questions to ask to make the most of your time on campus.

1. Get to know the student body

Getting a feel for the student body at a university is just as important as checking out the dining halls or facilities. Is there a lot of diversity at the school? Do the students seem friendly and helpful?

“You want to make sure that you feel comfortable with a school before you decide to go there,” says Rachel Petty, a junior at James Madison University. “There's no better way to do that than to interact with students around campus.”

The first step to interacting with the student body is to be set up with a current student for the overnight stay. If you already know someone that attends the school, like a friend, family friend or neighbor, ask if you can crash in their dorm for a weekend to see what the school is like. Getting in touch with a campus representative first is necessary because they can oftentimes set you up with free dining hall passes, a university goodie bag and other necessary items such as an official campus map and a calendar of events for the weekend. If you don’t already know someone, contact a campus representative and ask to be set up with a current student. You can also check the university website to see if there is an official accepted students weekend and what dates they offer.

Now that you know how to actually take part in an overnight weekend, focus on meeting the student body! First, think about what majors you may be interested in.

“We recommend applicants seek out under and upperclassmen pursuing different majors," David Petersam, president of AdmissonsConsultants. "Sitting in on classes is recommended and finding students in intended majors is very important."

If you’re sleeping over with a current student, ask to meet her friends. If you are going to be on a sports team, try to connect with a couple of the athletes on the team.

Remember, current students can be the best people to ask your questions to. “We advise  our clients to come up a list of what is important before they visit the campus," says Petersam. "The written checklist is important. We always recommend talking to many different students as the questions asked should be subjective and answers will vary depending on who you ask.”

If you hit it off with someone, following them on Twitter or other social media is a great way to stay connected. It’s great to have at least one familiar face on a campus of strangers during the first week!

2. Check out the dining halls

In no way should a dining hall make or break your decision to attend a certain university, but you’re going to be living off this food for the next four years; believe us, you at least want to make sure it’s edible.

According to Rachel, checking out the dining facilities around campus is an absolute must during an overnight stay. And, there are many things to consider. Does the cafeteria offer healthy options, or is it basically just pizza and burgers? (In other words, exactly how fast are you going to get that Freshman 15?) Is there just one dining hall on campus or multiple?  Checking whether  the school provides food that accommodates your diet, should you be vegan, vegetarian or have severe food allergies, is also extremely important.

Alaina Marie Leary, a graduate student at Emerson College, did not originally look into her campus’s dining hall during her visit, and ended up deeply regretting it. “As someone who doesn't eat meat, I should have checked into what sort of items were typically served on the day-to-day at the campus, rather than relying on the food that was presented during an official tour, or what tour guides have to tell you," she says.

Beyond that, make sure you ask about the available meal plans. What are the hours of the dining hall? If you have class in the morning and work in the afternoon, are you going to miss lunch hours? The school’s website, a campus tour guide or a representative from the school or dining hall will have all of this information ready for you!

3. See where you’ll be living

Dorms are kind of like dining halls—they shouldn’t necessarily be the deciding factor of which college you go to, but you are going to have to live with it (or in this case in it) for the next couple of years.

Check what kinds of dorms the school offers. Do they just have doubles? Triples? Do any have their own private bathrooms? Are there apartment complexes or university-owned houses you can rent?  If you are an incoming freshman, you probably will be in a typical double dorm with a communal bathroom somewhere on your floor.

Alaina recommends thoroughly examining the dorms if you are going to be living on campus. “It's great to get a feel for where things are before you choose where to live," she adds. "You might realize that one of the dorms has better lighting, or that one is right next to a current construction site, and that will help you make your decision.”

If you take part in an official sleepover weekend where they place you with a student or in an empty dorm, realize that they may purposefully be showing you a nicer or more updated residence hall. Make sure to take a look at the older residence halls (because that’s usually where they stick the freshmen!).

Brianna Susnak, a sophomore at Indiana University, adds that your host may also be able to show you more types of rooms. “Ask to visit their friends in different residence halls,” she says. “Plus, they may even be able to show you the buildings they have classes in depending on the time of day!”

Remember, your housing options will change over the course of your four years. Many schools require that you live on campus for at least one to two years. After that, you are free to move off campus -- or even be required to! Many will move into an apartment or house with a group of friends. Securing off-campus housing can be a very easy process and is something that can drastically reduce your cost of school.

4. Show some early school spirit

During your short sleepover weekend, immersing yourself in the college experience is one of the best things you can do. “When it comes to overnight stays at colleges, definitely maximize your time as much as you can,” says Brianna. “Ask the person you're staying with to show you their favorite restaurants to eat at, or go to an athletic event, game, concert or show that interests you.”

By showing some school spirit and experiencing all the activities campus has to offer that weekend, you will get a great idea of what campus life will be like. Keep in mind that every school is completely different. If it’s a Division I or pretty large school, the campus activities and sporting games will probably be packed. If it’s a Division III or small private school, sports may not be a huge focus. Experiencing all these things during your overnight stay is a great way to figure this out, but remember that there’s always a way to get involved on campus!

5. See what resources the school offers

Taking time to thoroughly check out the facilities at your potential school is absolutely crucial during your overnight stay. Definitely don’t leave it until move-in day!

If you know what your major is ahead of time, start with that department. Don’t just take look around, though. Ask around and learn whether the department has updated technology such as computers, iPads or tablets. Also see what kinds of services they provide. For example, if you are an English major, does the school have a writing workshop, peer review office or student editors that can look over your work? And if you’re the type of person who can’t study in your room, don’t forget to check out the library! Many often have private study rooms or quiet rooms to take advantage of.

Other  important facilities to take a look at are the gym, student union and the campus chapel or religious center. Does the university offer work out classes that would interest you such as Zumba, yoga or cycling? Does the student union or student center seem like a fun, relaxing and inviting environment? Does the university hold religious services that you require? Remember, this could potentially be your home for the next four years -- checking to see if it has an abundance of resources is absolutely necessary!

6. Find out the school’s quirks and oddities

Some of the best things about colleges are the weird traditions, quirks and oddities upheld by the student body. At some schools, there are underground tunnels you can explore. At others, it’s a campus rule to never step on the university seal while walking to class.

Not only can they make the college experience fun and memorable (and asking a current student about all of them can get you so excited for college), but learning about the do’s and don’ts of your potential school ahead of time can prevent you from looking like a total freshman when you move to campus. Is wearing your lanyard around your neck a total no? Do students never walk across the quad to class? Make sure you get the scoop!

7. Get familiar with campus

Having a firm grasp of your way around campus is absolutely necessary before going to school. Taking advantage of an overnight stay is the perfect time to master your mental campus map (you will also be that freshman if you walk around the first day with a map of the school).

“If in doubt, just ask [your host] to walk around campus with you and point various things out!” says Brianna. “When I was going on overnight stays, I was surprised just how much I learned by walking around and talking with a current student.”

While you are familiarizing yourself with campus, make sure you are also committing to memory which academic building is which (you will have classes in more buildings than just the one pertaining to your major!) and where the dining and residence halls are as well as sports facilities and the gyms. Also make sure you are able to find your way around campus from more than just your host’s room—college campuses can get confusing!

8. Explore (a little) off campus

As much as you’ll be absolutely loving life on campus next fall, remember that at times, you’re going to want to get out. An overnight stay is the perfect time to take a glance at the city or town the potential college resides in, as well as to ask yourself whether you could have a fun time there, find things to do and most importantly, whether you feel safe.

Alaina adds that if you’re planning on spending time off campus, be sure you know how you can get around.

“If they can, [students] should take a look at what is in town where they'll be going to school, and what public transport is like, especially if they aren't planning to bring a car with them," she says. "Schools in really large cities typically have great transport and easy access to great activities off campus, but schools in small towns don't always have this, and it's good to know.”

She continues, “I went to undergrad in a small town and I had to take two buses just to get to the mall, and it took over an hour. That's something I wish I had looked into, not that it would have changed my decision.”

If you don’t want to spend too much time away from campus during your overnight stay, a convenient time to take a quick look around is during the journey to and from the school. Even if you just stay in the car, you’ll get a glimpse of what the surrounding area has to offer!

9. Ask about the logistics

So you’ve looked at all the fun and exciting parts of campus. Now it’s time to talk about the logistics. Make sure you touch upon very important aspects of college admissions with a campus representative.

“Questions too many applicants overlook involve entry or exit hurdles," says Petersam. "Is it easy or difficult to get admitted to a particular major/school? How many [name of group, but often times pre-med] start the program but aren’t able to complete it? What are the reasons that some can complete the program but others can’t?”

Other important questions to consider and ask include not just what the university can give to you during your four years, but also what it can provide you beyond your time as a student. “A lot of parents in this current economic climate are pressing their applicants to learn about career services and employer perceptions of the school and its students,” adds Petersam.

Have a whole laundry list of questions? Petersam advises heading online! “The time on campus is too precious to be wasted,” he warns. Many answers to your questions can easily be found online or with a quick call to the university. For example, gender ratios, admission requirements, and statistics on graduation and job placement.

For most, an overnight visit is the first look at what college is really like. Make sure you take the time to really see what that particular college is going to be like before you commit!

  2. Add the turkey and beer and simmer until reduced by about half, about 8 minutes. Add the tomatoes and the beans and corn; bring to a boil. Add flax.
  3. Let simmer, stirring occasionally, until thick, 30 minutes.

4. Vegan Brownies

At only 158 calories, the secret ingredient to this treat is zucchini. (Yes, you read that right!) These brownies are just as tasty but are healthier than regular chocolate brownies.

  • 1 cup raw sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl of dry ingredients and mix until a thick batter forms.
  5. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

You heard it from Project Runway: in the fashion world, one day you’re in and the next day you’re out. As we all struggle to conform to the fashion industry's beauty standards and be "in," there seems to be no room for individuality or self expression. Until now.

The Society Management, a New York modeling agency, teamed up with New York City’s Girls Inc., a foundation dedicated to "inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.” This duo is determined to promote individuality through their new campaign, #HerSocietyStory. Using ten of the agency's models from various countries and backgrounds—including transgender model Andreja Pejic, top model Caroline Trentini and many others—the campaign encourages us all to embrace our differences as our strengths.

This campaign features a black and white photo of each female model in men’s workwear, accompanied by their quotes on what it means to be a woman. Check out all the campaign photos and model testimonies on the #HerSocietyStory website.

A Complete Guide on How to Go "No Poo"

$

If you haven’t heard of the “no poo” method, it isn’t exactly what it sounds like (phew!). The no poo method simply involves cutting out shampoo from your haircare routine to re-strengthen your strands. But getting started may be daunting, as there are a ton of different ways to become a no poo-er, and different methods work better for different people—so how do know which will work for you? We’ve talked to experts and no poo-ers themselves to find out as much as we can about the method.

What are the benefits of the no poo method?

Some of you may be wondering what the benefits of the no poo method are if you’ve been shampooing your whole life. Why change your routine now? What many people don’t know is that shampooing your hair can actually be pretty damaging. One of the main benefits of no poo is that you'll be avoiding the harmful toxins that unnatural shampoo formulas may utilize. These toxins can take a serious toll, making hair too dry (or too greasy), weaker and harder to grow out. Even worse, unhealthy ingredients can be found in unexpected places, like synthetic fragrances, which are one of the main (and most popular) damaging offenders on your shampoo's ingredients list.

Additionally, while shampoo cleans your hair, it also takes away the natural oils that make your hair healthy and soft. Using conditioner to supplement isn't an ideal solution either, as you’re actually just putting more chemicals in your hair. And if your hair gets greasy easily, it may be because it’s deprived of its natural oils and is therefore producing more.

So, if you want to reverse the damage done, the no poo method can do just that! Andrea Lavinthal, the Style and Beauty Director at PEOPLE, says, “Fans of the ‘no poo’ method say their hair feels softer, looks shinier and is generally healthier than it was when they were using standard shampoo. Plus, some replacements, like baking soda and apple cider vinegar, are a great option for people who prefer eco-friendly beauty products.” Lavinthal makes an important final point—the chemicals in shampoo get washed down the drain whenever you rinse, so by eliminating shampoo, you’re also potentially limiting the amount of chemicals being released into the world!

What are some common replacements for shampoo?

Luckily, there are a few different replacements for shampoo, so you’ll have plenty of chances to find a suitable alternative.Need help choosing? The porosity of your hair can help you determine which method will work best for you.

Baking soda and apple cider vinegar

“A combo of ‘washing’ with baking soda and ‘conditioning’ with apple cider vinegar is the most popular method,” Lavinthal says. Mix one part baking soda with about three to four parts water; you can apply this formula to wet or dry hair, massaging into the roots before rinsing. Then, combine one part apple cider vinegar with four parts water, and gently pour it evenly through your hair before rinsing it out.

Baking soda and apple cider vinegar are great for oil control. Chelle Ivancic, a sophomore at DePaul University, shares, “I was the one who originally took the nose dive in my family of four curly haired women. They were all worried about putting the vinegar on their hair. The way I see it, if I can put it on my salad then why not my head? After they saw how much my curls improved and the moisture level in my hair went up, they all jumped on board.” Need more proof? Chelle has been donating her hair for 14 years now because it is so healthy and grows so fast!

Cleansing conditioner

“Another option is to use regular conditioner or a cleansing conditioner (this is called ‘co-washing’). Cleansing conditioners are exactly what they sound like: conditioners that contain very mild cleansing agents,” notes Lavinthal. Wen, for example, has a great cleansing conditioner that doesn’t contain damaging ingredients.

Tabia Robinson, a senior at SUNY Albany, shares, “I don't use shampoo anymore because it dries out my hair. I am African American and I have natural hair and I find that shampoo of any kind always dries out my hair so now I just use conditioners to wash my hair and my hair is always bouncy and has sheen when I'm done.” Of course, if you find that just using conditioner makes your hair greasy (which it may), opt for something different.

Egg wash

Egg washes cleanse, condition and strengthen your hair. Even better, the protein in eggs can add volume, so this type of wash is especially good for those with thin hair. The downside? You must avoid warm water or the egg will start to scramble mid-shower! Another thing to keep in mind is that egg washes should only be done a couple times per month to avoid overdoing it on added protein.

Ready to try? Simply beat an egg, apply it to your wet hair, leave it in for 5 to 15 minutes and rinse with cool water.

Rye flour wash

The vitamins, minerals and nutrients in rye flour will make most people’s hair very shiny and smooth, and the more finely ground, the better. You can buy rye flour on Amazon.

To get started, mix about three tablespoons of rye flour with about three tablespoons of water, massage it into wet hair, leave it in for 5 to 15 minutes and fully rinse.

Water only

For the water method, all you have to do is rinse your hair with warm water, scritch and preen it (massage your scalp and use a boar bristle brush to pull the oil down your hair) and let it air dry. This method, however, does not work well with hard (mineral-rich) water.

Should you try the no poo method?

If you have overly dry or greasy hair, or are simply looking for a more natural, non-toxic way to care for your hair, give the no-poo method a try. “You can't really know if the no-poo method will be right for you until you try it,” Lavinthal advises.

“One caveat: You have to stick with it for a month or more since there's usually a notoriously icky transition period when your hair looks like a grease ball. But fans of the method swear that shiny, healthy hair will be waiting on the other side,” says Lavinthal. Most reports indicate that the entire transition period is about three months. During the first month your hair may be very greasy, while during the second month your hair may have a lot of static. Then, during the third month, your hair will start to look better but may be frizzy. After these three months are over, though, your hair will look better than ever!

That being said, not everyone will have a positive experience with the no poo method. Lindy Olive, a senior at Auburn University, says, “I have been doing the baking soda and apple cider vinegar instead of shampoo and conditioner for over two years. It has made my hair thick. However, it dried out my hair and I'm looking for a different method now. I used coconut oil and tea tree oil to replenish some of the oils, but it didn't help much, because it got so dry over time.” Unfortunately, since everyone has different proteins in their hair, each person’s hair will react differently to certain methods. “I encourage everyone to try it, but for me, it didn't work out,” says Lindy.

But if dryness from one method is the case for you, don't immediately lose hope! Co-washing and cleansing conditioners may be a better choice. “They're typically best for people with very dry, thick or curly hair,” Lavinthal shares. “Fine, straight hair might look greasy and heavy. The most important thing is to use more product than you normally do and scrub your scalp really well with your fingertips. This helps break down oils and remove residue from styling products." Once your hair has transitioned, you can introduce shampoo into your regimen without undoing all of that work! "If you like the way your hair looks, but your scalp is feeling itchy and gross, it's OK to use a clarifying shampoo every two weeks or so,”  Lavinthal says.

All in all, if you’re sick of your hair routine and are looking for something more healthy and natural, no poo is definitely worth a shot. You’ll have to stick it out for the first few months, but your devotion will be rewarded with longer, stronger and even more beautiful hair! So while it may take some getting used to, many swear that the results are worth it. Good luck, collegiettes!
