How the Word "B*tch" is Perceived Across Generations

Cut Video, known for releasing humorous, discussion-driven, and sometimes taboo viral videos, is back at it with their newest talkpiece, a video asking women ages 15 to 50 what they think of when they hear the word "b*tch." The responses vary in range, but there are some common themes throughout.

Right from the start, we nod in agreement as a 16-year-old comments, "I know it's used a lot," and an 18-year-old adds, "It's kind of an unneeded word, and it gets thrown around a lot." This sentiment is echoed throughout the clip in both the younger and older generations. A woman of 37 shares, "I feel that it's used too often" while a women of 39 states that it's simply "unnecessary."

Thankfully, one young woman shows strength in the face of the word's commonality. At 21, she remarks, "I think words only have the power you give them, so I think a lot of women are claiming that word as their own."

What's more interesting is the change in feedback as age increases. Starting at age 30, these women seem more open to the term, abandoning descriptive words such as "mean" and "hurt" for "honest" and "blunt." Not only do they embrace the term, but they use it to describe others in their social circles. Maybe it comes from a longer lifetime of exposure, or from some wisdom with age, but the final speaker, who is 50, shares an incredibly positive attitude. "Love it. Sometimes that's how you have to wield power as a woman" she says. "I think it's funny and I enjoy it." Of course, it is extremely important to note that older women do not go unaffected by the negativity associated with the word. One woman, age 46, tells it as it is: "Woah, that's not good. It makes you feel like nothing."

There are a few lessons to be learned from this video. The first is that any word aimed at tearing down another person has no place in modern vocabulary. Of course, that's better said than done, and as this clip exemplifies, the word "b*tch" has become normalized in modern culture. Its effects are painfully clear. These women express pain and vulnerability stemming from the word, and on the other end of the spectrum, anger and defiance. One response is particularly insightful, associating "b*tch" with the word "dominance," and that's exactly what it's often used for—women trying to hurt other women, and even worse, men trying to control, patronize, and belittle women.

While we feel that there is no place for such a derogatory and often sexist term in today's society, we also can't help but feel admiration for the women who handle this adversity with maturity and grace. This video shows that while the word itself is negative, the female characteristics it is often used to demean are actually valuable and important traits that no woman should be ashamed to possess. One speaker, who is 48, smiles with amusement as she defines a "b*tch" as a "proud women who does not listen to people, she does what she wants to do." Right on! If a "b*tch" is driven, strong, independent, and ready to take-charge, we aren't quite sure where the insult lies!

If there's one thing to gain from this video, it's what one 44-year-old speaker correctly points out. The term "b*tch" is  a "loaded" word, and if used at all, it should be used with caution and perhaps a grin of pride.

Frappuccino lovers, prepare for your wildest dreams to come true! In what may be the greatest news of all time, Starbucks has decided to release six new Frappuccino flavors, all in the same day. Yes, you read that right. We're just as excited as you are.

In celebration of our favorite drinkable dessert's 20th anniversary, Starbucks has decided to take note of fan requests and compile a new collection of the most desired and recommended Frappuccino flavors, labeled Fan Flavor Frappuccinos. The catch? Five of these decadent drinks will not be permanent. Starting on June 19, you'll have the chance to vote for your favorite new flavor. The most popular pick will earn a permanent place among the Frappuccino classics, and results will be released on July 3. If that isn't sweet enough, from July 3 to July 6, Starbucks will offer a grande-sized drink of the new menu flavor for only $3—so basically, our summers have just been made.

We've outlined each of the six new flavors to help you plan your pick and fulfill your dreamy drink desires. Thank us later.

1. Red Velvet Cake

This drink, inspired by a classic dessert favorite, features chocolate chips, whipped cream, and mocha, raspberry and vanilla syrups. Sign us up!

2. Cotton Candy

This blend features all of the ingredients of the classic Vanilla Bean Frappuccino, but with the addition of raspberry syrup. You may recognize this flavor as one of Starbucks' secret menu stars, but now you never have to be embarrassed to order it again! Why? You simply have to taste it to ensure that Starbucks lovers get the best new menu item. It's basically a scientific study.

3. Cinnamon Roll

Perhaps the most decadent of all, this coffee blend is comprised of cinnamon dolce, white chocolate mocha and vanilla bean flavors. With the addition of cinnamon dolce sprinkle on your whipped cream, you'll be spiced into Frappuccino heaven.

4. Lemon Bar

We're most intrigued by this tart choice, which gives us all the more reason to try it! The blend is a unique mix of lemonade and vanilla, topped with classic whipped cream and a surprise sprinkle of caramel sugar.

5. Caramel Cocoa Cluster

Excuse us while we refrain from drooling. This drink is made of coffee combined with toffee nut syrup and dark caramel sauce. Topped to perfection with whipped cream and a mocha drizzle, our mouths are watering just thinking about it.

6. Cupcake

A drink as sweet as its namesake, this flavor closely resembles the limited edition Birthday Cake Frappuccino that made an appearance in stores last Spring. Another rendition of the Vanilla Bean classic, this blend adds in hazelnut syrup for that cakey taste we're all addicted to.

The conclusion? We're giving you permission to use these next few weeks as an all-you-can-drink Frappuccino fiesta. We'll be dropping into the nearest Starbucks during our morning commute or lunch break, and we encourage you to do the same—after all, you don't want to be responsible for picking the wrong flavor, right? Of course, we doubt any of these flavors will fail your Frappuccino fantasies.

Which new flavor are you dying to try, collegiettes?

Chances are, you've been through the nerve-wracking and totally awkward experience of getting your hair cut. No matter the cause of your visit—unsightly split ends, a craving for new color, or daydreams about a new 'do—you can probably relate to these thoughts from the salon chair.

The Waiting Room

1. You know what? I should totally try something spontaneous. I'm only young once, right?

Do I want to be eighty and regret never dyeing my tips blue

At The Sink

2. My neck is definitely going to cramp up in two seconds.

I'm also staring right up the hairdresser's nose right now and feel super uncomfortable.

3. Wait... this actually feels kind of good.

cat bath

Maybe this won't be so bad?

4. Oh my god, can you just wash my hair forever? Please and thank you.

relaxed cat getting hair brushed

Seriously, this warm water and delicious smelling shampoo must be what heaven is made of.

5. Was that really worth an extra $20?

Yes. Yes it was.

In The Chair

6. I have three seconds to choose a style... help!

Everyone knows I can't be trusted with big decisions!

7. OMG... could I have been more ambiguous? Now there's WAY too much room for interpretation.

Wait... shouldn't I know what my signature style is called by now? I've had it for ten years. This is embarassing.

8. I feel so restricted. This cape is a straight jacket, I swear.

What if I have to itch my nose? Is it rude to answer texts?

9. Yup. Definitely looking like a lunatic right now.

Those people in the waiting area better not be judging me. I'm rocking the foil look right now, okay?!

10. This hairdresser is awkwardly close to my face.

Do I smile? Ugh, that is definitely creepy. I guess I'll awkwardly look away.

11. Where am I supposed to look right now?

I feel incredibly awkward just staring at myself in the mirror.

12. Oh boy... my RBF is on fire right now.

But like, I can't just sit here smiling.

13. Ugh. At least the small talk is over.

Now, please don't talk to me for the rest of this cut.

14. Okay, I appreciate you cutting my hair, but if you comb my ear one more time I might flip.

I think my ears are bleeding. Help.

15. Is my head down far enough? Oh no, I think I moved! Maybe she didn't notice...

JK, she definitely did. There she goes moving my head again.

16. Hair. Tickling. Nose. Must. Resist. Moving.

This must be some form of torture.

17. *Hair is still wet* Did she even cut anything off?

It looks the same and I'm confused.

18. *Hair begins to dry* Wait, now it looks too short!

With every blow of the hairdyer I watch my beautiful locks shrink in size. I think I'm going to faint.

19. What have I done?!

Why did I come to this horrible place?

20. JK, I look fabulous.

Okay, it's actually not so bad. You know what? I could totally rock this. I'm looking good.

21. Now, if only I had access to the magic you put in my hair to make it look this good...

Why can I never achieve this look at home? What is your secret?

So, There Was a 'Gilmore Girls' Reunion

On Saturday evening, the lovely and quirky residents of Stars Hollow came together once more in Austin's ATX Television Festival to talk about the show that became a classic and has garnered fans both old and new since it premiered in 2000.

For those of you who haven't been introduced, Gilmore Girls isn't just a show—it's a lifestyle. Set in a small town near Hartford, Connecticut, it chronicles the lives of arguably the greatest mother/daughter duo in the entire universe (Lorelai and Rory Gilmore) and their epic adventures of life and love in a weird, wonderful little town.

This past weekend, the stars of the hit WB show all came together to discuss the show, their favorite moments, and of course the late Edward Herrmann, who passed away just last year. Here are some highlights from the panel.

Where are their characters now?

This was an important question, and surprisingly enough, all of the cast members had great answers. Rory would be a journalist, Lorelai and Luke would "100 percent" still be together, Jess would still be "being Jess" (which we don't mind, of course!) and Lane would be trying to figure out what kind of mom she wants to be. Michel would either own his own inn or be in Paris, while Paris and Doyle would probably still be together, and Logan would "not be working." Miss Patty would probably run for mayor (and win!) and Dean would continue to work at Doose's Market and eventually become manager. All in all, pretty happy endings!

Dean is actually "Team Jess," Logan is "Team Jess," and even Jess is "Team Jess"

When asked which of Rory's love interests they liked the most, Jared Padalecki (who played first boyfriend Dean Forrester) admited that he was "always Team Jess." On the other hand Milo Ventimiglia (who played bad boy Jess Mariano) said that while he was Team Jess, he also loves Dean and thinks "Logan is a d***." As for Matt Czuchry (who played Logan Huntzberger), he was also a Jess supporter, but echoed show creator Amy Sherman-Palladino's sentiment that each boyfriend was perfect for a certain time in Rory's life.

It was by far Scott Patterson (Luke) who had the best response: "None of you were good enough for Rory!"

A Gilmore Girls movie won't be happening any time soon

Sorry, fans, despite rumors that a film to follow the series might be in the works, Amy Sherman-Palladino shut down the speculation by asserting that it was not going to happen—at least, for now. But she left it open-ended by saying that it was great that the cast members were all still very close, which is a promising thing, and that in the future it might be a possibility—but it would have to be at the right place and time. Well don't worry, Amy, we'd wait as long as it took to see a Gilmore Girls movie!

The creators had to fight to get Melissa McCarthy cast

Gilmore Girls wouldn't have been what it was without every singly zany character on board, and Sookie St. James was no exception. But according to Amy Sherman-Palladino, there was originally some resistance from the show executives about casting McCarthy, who at the time was relatively new to acting. Eventually, they came around, but not without some convincing. Interestingly enough, McCarthy went on to find huge success post-Gilmore Girls, and she was also the only main cast member not present at the reunion.

Edward Herrmann was remembered

An illustrious actor and a pillar of the show, Edward Herrmann was a noticeable absence at the event but the cast members did not neglect to pay homage to the late Richard Gilmore. As Sherman-Palladino eloquently put it, "F*** you for dying." An empty chair was also placed on stage in remembrance.

And last but not least, Michel is a glorious creature

Yanic Truesdale played the ever sarcastic and sassy Michel, a role he unabashedly enjoyed during the seven seasons of the show. He expressed his glee at getting to fire off some of the best one liners of the show, and admitted to some of his favorites, including this gem.

We were all so happy to see the cast all back together, and let's keep our fingers crossed about that film! And if you haven't yet delved into the glorious world of "Gilmore Girls" you can now catch all seven seasons on Netflix—well, there goes your free time.

The 5 Biggest Communication Mistakes & How to Fix Them

$
0
0

We’ve been hearing “use your words” ever since we hit preschool and crayons became a hot commodity. While we’re no longer 3-year-olds battling it out for the “razzle dazzle rose” color, communicating well is still essential — especially when it comes to you and your SO. So how come we’re still making all of these communication mistakes?

Good news: It’s never too late to change your ways. We’ve rounded up the five worst communication mistakes you’re making with your SO and how to fix them. While the coolest Crayolas in the box might not be at stake, your relationship is, and we’d call that pretty important.

1. Kitchen-sinking

Think about the last fight you and your SO had. Did you stick to the topic that started the disagreement, or did you start bringing up each and every complaint that’s ever passed through your mind since the dawn of time — err, the beginning of your relationship?

Maybe initially your boyfriend is annoyed because you promised to go to a movie with him and then you bailed. Instead of concentrating on just that incident, you get defensive and point out he almost never comes to your open-mic nights.

“Any time someone’s bringing up the past, he or she is indicating resentment and unresolved issues,” says Patrick Wanis, a human behavior and relationship expert.

How to fix it:

If it’s pretty clear that you’re bringing up past arguments just to deflect blame, you’ll have to take a different approach. Wanis recommends making a list about the topics that keep coming up and planning a discussion about them for when you and your SO are both calm. “You’ll have less arguments in the future if you resolve those issues now,” he says.

Remind yourself that staying on topic is essential. After all, how can you solve the original problem if you’re constantly bringing up unrelated ones? So the next time you and your SO are arguing, pause and take a second to remember what originally started the fight. If you’re far from that issue, interject by saying, “I think we’ve gotten a little off track here. Originally, I was upset because…”

2. Freezing your partner out

If you’re still using the silent treatment, then that preschool reference is way too relevant. Not only is ignoring your SO immature, it’s toxic to your relationship as well. Sure, your boyfriend or girlfriend will figure out really quickly that you’re upset and you’ll get the short-term gratification of “punishing” him or her, but over time, your SO will feel resentful of your manipulative tactics.

It’s also impossible to resolve anything when one person is completely shut off, meaning that issue you were so upset about in the first place will just fester.

“You’ll never have success,” Wanis says. “The reason people use the silent treatment is to communicate that they are angry and that they’re trying to hurt you. It’s not a wise approach — it doesn’t solve anything.”

How to fix it

This fix is pretty easy: Stop using the silent treatment. The next time you’re angry and tempted to ignore or be curt with your SO, ask yourself if you want a Brad and Jen relationship or a Brad and Angie relationship. If it’s the latter (because they’re still together, obvi), then make yourself talk things out instead of relying on power plays.

If you want to suggest to your boyfriend or girlfriend that you’re upset, the more mature way to do that is simply to tell him or her, Wanis says.

Try saying calmly, “I’m angry because…” Your conflicts will be resolved way faster, and your SO will appreciate your straightforwardness.

3. Being defensive

So, who likes being told they’ve messed up?

(Crickets)

Criticism — even when it’s constructive — can be hard to take. However, when it comes to your love life, you’re going to have to be open to feedback.

How do you know if you’re being too sensitive? When your boyfriend tells you that you seemed kind of quiet at dinner, do you assume he’s calling you moody and snap, “Do you know how much I’ve had to do this week? I’m obviously exhausted!” or do you say, “Sorry about that — I’ve had a crazy seven days, and I need a dose of Nutella and Game of Thrones to rejuvenate.”

In case it’s not obvious, you want your response to be more like the second.

How to fix it

“Feeling insecure or feeling threatened makes you defensive,” Wanis explains. He says that by figuring out the root of your behavior, you can modify your response. Instead of immediately snapping back when your boyfriend brings up something that’s bugging him, pause, recognize that you feel attacked, tell yourself you’re overreacting and then try to respond more appropriately. If you need a little more time to calm down, you can even say, “I’m feeling a little defensive right now. Can we talk about this later tonight or tomorrow? I definitely want to hear what you have to say, but I want to be in the right state of mind so I can really listen.”

You can also ask your SO to clarify his or her complaint. Ninety-nine percent of the time it will be about a smaller issue than you’re anticipating, so once your SO explains what he or she means, you won’t feel as big of a need to defend yourself.

“Practice mindfulness: being aware of your thoughts so you can separate them from your actions,” Wanis says. It’s not that you always have to agree with the criticism, but you do have to be open to hearing it.

4. Having arguments over text

It doesn’t matter how many emojis are added to the library — it’s always way more difficult to communicate over text than in person. “I’m sorry” can mean “I’m genuinely apologetic” or “I’m sorry you feel that way” — and you have no way of knowing which “I’m sorry” your SO is using without body language, tone of voice and facial expressions.

“The best ways to communicate are through body language and voice tonality,” Wanis says. “With texting, you completely remove that.”

How to fix it

On your end, it’s easy: Don’t send any angry texts that could lead to a fight. But what if your SO is the one to start things?

If you get a message saying something like, “BTW, I really did not appreciate how you acted tonight,” reply with, “I really want to talk about this — when I can actually see you.” Then give him or her a time or opportunity to discuss the problem. Bonus: By the time you guys meet up, your SO will probably have cooled down!

For those collegiettes out there in long-distance relationships, we have bad news: Virtual fights are almost inevitable. However, if you can, try to move the conversation to video chat. Just put down the iPhone, and it’s less likely that one of you will get hurt.

5. Trying to “win” the argument

When it comes to sports and the lottery, winning is awesome. However, when you try to win at fighting, most of the time you actually lose.

That’s because, according to Wanis, focusing on who’s right distracts you from the real mission: coming to a compromise you guys both like.

For example, suppose a discussion about whether you should spend celebrate a holiday at his house or your house turns into you trying to prove his mom dislikes you. At a certain point, you’re so caught up in convincing him that you’re totally unresponsive to whatever he’s saying — and making him less likely to listen to you. Coming to an agreement? Probably not going to happen. It’s a vicious cycle (kind of like J Bieb’s and Selena’s romance) and definitely takes its toll on a relationship.

How to fix it

Remind yourself that you’re not Rocky and this isn’t a boxing match — so stop trying to win!

If your boyfriend hates that you sometimes send drunken Snapchats that happen to include other (attractive) guys, don’t spend the whole argument trying to get him to recognize that you’re totally innocent. Instead, figure out the root of the problem (is he mad that you’re Snapping under the influence, or because you’re spending time with other guys?) and come up with a solution.

Like with over-defensiveness, Wanis recommends using the mindfulness technique.

“If you find yourself always needing to be right, pause, observe your behavior and detach yourself,” he says. “Then you can stop trying to win the argument and focus on what’s really important.”

We’d like to amend the advice of all the preschool teachers and moms of the world: It’s not just “use your words,” but “use your words well.” Good communication is key to a healthy relationship, so if you and your SO are guilty of any of these five errors, you should fix that, ASAP. Now can you please pass the Crayons?

'Friends' Co-Creator Reveals the Truth About Monica & Chandler

Any Friends fan knows that Chandler and Monica are soulmates. It's hard to imagine the finale without Chandler and Monica together as parents moving into the suburbs—but originally that was not the plan.

Co-creator Marta Kauffman revealed during a panel at the ATX Television Festival that Monica and Chandler weren't always going to end up together. The original plan was to have the hookup in London be just a one night stand. It was the audience's response to seeing Chandler and Monica together romantically that pushed the writers to give the fans what they wanted.

We're so glad the writers realized that these two "lobsters" were meant to be. Friends wouldn't have been the same without high-strung Monica and funny guy Chandler falling in love. Team Monica & Chandler forever!

12 Times 'Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' Got Real

$
0
0

Although it's been more than 15 years since The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air first premiered, it still remains relevant. It's one of the funniest, most quoteable shows out there. Will hitting on any girl was the highlight of every episode and the amount of times we busted a gut laughing at the jokes made at Uncle Phil's expense made Fresh Prince a show to watch over and over again, because the episodes never got old. But then there were a few moments where it wasn't just a happy-go-lucky show, and the viewers learned some life lessons along the way. Below are the top 12 times Fresh Prince got really real.

1. When Will's deadbeat dad returned after 14 years

Yep, we went there. That scene. Hands down the most emotional episode of Fresh Prince was "Papa's Got A Brand New Excuse". In the episode, Will's dad comes back into the picture for a heart-wrenching thirty minutes and it ends with Will yelling at Uncle Phil, until before you know it, they're hugging and crying and we're hugging and crying our TVs.

2. When Jazz told it like it was

In the wake of the recent shootings of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown and every other nation-wide racial gun-related case, this scene hits home in a new way.

3. That time Aunt Viv educated will

Will's character in Fresh Prince showed his love for Malcolm X and his movement a lot throughout the series. But no one forgets that one time Aunt Viv explained to Will that you can hang as many posters as you want, but until you're educated about something, you can never truly say you're behind it. Well done, Aunt Viv. *insert clapping emoji*

4. When they addressed interracial couples

When everyone noticed Frank was.... "tall" (A.K.A. white) the show addressed how interracial couples were more surprising and (mostly) unaccepted in the 90's.

5. When Uncle Phil explained his real job

Will not having a father is a reoccurring theme of the show. Everyone took a moment of silence after Uncle Phil said: “I’m your father. It is my job to protect you. It’s a job I refuse to quit, and at which I can’t afford to fail. You are my son, Will. End of story.” *sobs*

6. When Carlton figured out an important life lesson

Oh, Carlton! We'll be your (real) friend!

7. That gun episode

When Will gets shot because of Carlton, no one could keep the tears in when Will demanded Carlton hand over the gun because this "just isn't him. It's them."

8. When Carlton got accused of being a "sell out" and stood his ground

The short jokes on this show never disappointed, but Carlton stood tall that day he told off someone who told him he was a "sell out" because he was a privileged black man.

9. When Uncle Phil taught us how to be better people (multiple times)

Preach on, Uncle Phil!

10. That time Geoffrey had a son

Who doesn't love the cynical butler? But everyone felt for Geoffrey when his son came into town just to con him out of his hard earned money, making fun of his butler career in the process. You're a good man, G.

11. That time a girl told off Will

Watching Will "pick up honeys" is probably one of the highlights of each episode, but that one time he tried joking around and a girl did not take it lightly calls for a moment of silence for all men out there who degrade women while trying to ask them out.

12. When Ashley grew up

Ashley was always the baby, so when she started dating, everyone had a hard time letting go. Multiple people shelled out love advice for the youngest member of the family, but when she told Will she could (basically) do whatever she wanted, it was then the fans knew little Ashley was gone forever.

Every character on that show brought something special to the show (even Jazz!). No matter how many times we watched Will get told off, shut down and/or made fun of, the boy from West Philadelphia always had the last word and will always be in our hearts. Now, to leave you with a little Will Smith humor:

The 7 Most Underrated Chick Flicks

As much as we all love Mean Girls, there’s only so many times we can watch it (and recite every line) before we need a little bit of change. There are literally millions of movies out there, which means there are thousands of chick flicks for you to watch that you haven’t seen yet. Give some of the lesser-known movies a try! Just because you haven’t heard of them doesn’t mean that they aren’t any good.

Here are some of our new favorites that we think you’ll love, too!

1. Heartbreakers (2001)

Things take an unusual turn when Page falls in love with a young bartender and begins to focus more on him than the scheme she has with her mother. Max must try to reel her daughter back into their world of lies and deceit.

Just like John Tucker Must Die, this movie is all about girls coming together and exploiting guys for their own personal benefit. While it’s obviously a comedic film, there’s also some drama and action as well.

What could go wrong when two long-time friends share parenting responsibilities but peruse their own separate romantic lives?

Jon Stewart Criticizes the Media for Only Discussing Caitlyn Jenner's Looks

Caitlyn Jenner recently presented herself to the world, and as Jon Stewart points out in the video below, the media has actually been fairly supportive of her transition. Undoubtedly this is not only a huge milestone for the trans community, but a giant step towards acceptance and equality in our society. However, as Jon Stewart also aptly points out, we still have a long journey to gender equality.

“Caitlyn, when you were a man, we could talk about your athleticism, your business acumen, but now you’re a woman, and your looks are really the only thing we care about," Jon Stewart said, criticizing the media for jumping to critique Jenner’s appearance as soon as she presented as a woman. While it’s certainly a good thing that everyone has embraced Caitlyn as a woman, it’s sad that being accepted as a woman goes along with being discussed based on how your hair looks, how much makeup you’re wearing, and how much you weigh.

Women have struggled with the media’s hypercritical coverage of their appearance for years. Many actresses decided to fight back during this years awards season with the emergence of #askhermore, in reference to female celebs on the red carpet only being asked about their appearance. The juxtaposition of the questions that Caitlyn was asked before and after her transition serves to expose this double standard.

Now that she’s a woman, the most important question, according to one broadcaster, is whether or not Caitlyn is hotter than Kim Kardashian. It can be easy to fall into the media’s trap and play along in these games. Who among us hasn’t criticized a female star for her outfit choice? But next time you feel yourself slipping, think again about the body shaming culture you’re helping to create.

For now, congratulations to Caitlyn Jenner on her bravery, for coming out in a society that isn’t always accepting. She’ll be given the Arthur Ashe Courage Award this July, which will give the media a lot more to talk about than just how great she looks on that cover.

How to Stay Fit on a Cruise Vacation

Food feeds the soul. One of the best, and maybe most important ways to learn about a culture is through their food; it tells everything about a culture’s identity, lifestyle, their community, and traditions. And on a cruise (or any vacation for that matter) food is everywhere, and all the time.

With so much indulgence, it isn’t uncommon (in fact, probably more common than not) to come home with a little extra tummy peeking out of our favorite jeans. I have taught myself to stick to a couple guidelines to keep in shape while being able to enjoy myself. Here are some easy and effortless ways to stay fit on a cruise:

1. Take the stairs

You’re probably thinking, “Effortless? What?” I promise you, taking the stairs is a whole lot faster, easier, and definitely healthier than waiting for the elevator. On every cruise I’ve been on, the elevator is a painstaking and awkward process; so many people trying to fit in such a small space that normally ends up stopping at every single floor. It’s a mindless way to walk off the extra couple bites of cake, and when you do it constantly (which you will) every day, it could save you those 2 to 3 lbs.

2. Abandon all comfort

Normally on the ship, they will offer dishes that are custom to the place they are docked, and also offer foods that are custom to the guests… aka, basic stuff you can get at home. Don’t waste your calories on the comfort dishes. Expand your palate and take advantage of the local foods in port; it would be a sin not to! Ice cream on the ship or real gelato in Venice?

3. Eat more dessert

I have a major sweet tooth; I would probably choose chocolate over dinner. That being said, I tend to eat less of the main course, saving calories, so I can splurge on dessert!

'Female Viagra' Gets Approval From the FDA

Last week, an FDA committee (in a vote of 18-6) approved a drug that's being referred to as “female Viagra.” The drug works to combat sexual dysfunction in premenopausal women. Many women have been asking for a “little pink pill” like this for years, claiming that the FDA has shown sexism in its approval of drugs. Viagra was approved back in 1998 and this new female drug has been through three review processes with the FDA since 2010. The FDA claims that it’s just trying to keep women safe.

"The FDA strives to protect and advance all important areas of women's health," according to FDA spokeswoman Andrea Fischer, "including disorders of female sexual function."

The drug's real name is flibanserin and, despite its function, works differently than Viagra does. Instead of having a solely physical effect (which is how Viagra works), this new drug works more similarly to an antidepressant in order to get women in the mood.

Several women participating in the clinical trial testified on Thursday.

“My desire for sex has left the building like Elvis’s blue suede shoes,” Amanda Parrish said to the FDA committee.

After using the drug, Parrish says she has seen marked improvements. She puts it this way: “As if a light switch had been turned on, so was I.”

This new drug, once available, will help older women, as well as women who've gone into early menopause or have had early-life hysterectomies. Many are calling this a step in the right direction for sexual equality. What are your thoughts, collegiettes?

11 Things Every Bi Girl is Sick of Hearing

We know that when it comes to talking about sexual identity, our friends mean well. And as open to discussion as we are, there are those little comments we hear all too often that can get pretty annoying. Here’s what you should never say to a bi girl—because trust us, she’s sick of hearing these things!

1. “Which do you like better?”

Because comparing apples and oranges totally makes sense, right?

2. “You’re so lucky you have double the options!”

*Insert eye roll here*

3. “Do you have a lot of threesomes?”

I mean, really?

4. “Are you sure you aren’t just a lesbian?”

Why do we need a preference?

5. “I don’t believe in people being bisexual.”

If only we had a dollar for every time we’ve heard that one!

6. “Do you just want to sleep with everyone?”

Yes, and you must want to sleep with exactly half of the population.

7. “You’ll grow out of this.”

This isn’t the same as being a Jonas Brothers fan!

8. “Guys are so annoying; I wish I could date girls too!”

Right, because we DECIDED to date girls for that reason. Okay.

9. “I bet I can change your mind.”

*Amanda Bynes voice*

10. “But when it comes down to it, who would you marry?”

…Harry Styles…or Emma Stone…

11. “Can I watch?”

Some people just never grow up.

Just remember, the next time you’re around your bi friends, be respectful! Sure, they don’t mind people asking the average question, but if you ask them one more time who they would marry, they might just explode.

1. Offer your opinions

If you’re the type of person who enjoys giving feedback, surveys are a great way to make money. Some of these survey sites pay you a flat fee per survey, while others pay you based on your involvement. Sites such as MySurvey and Swagbucks  offer different opportunities to participate in consumer research. You can review different products and services and sometimes make up to five dollars per survey or get paid in gift cards.

“I took online surveys this summer to make extra money, and it was super easy,” says Elise Chapdelaine, a junior at Michigan State University. “I made a decent amount, and most surveys only took up to 15 to 25 minutes.”

2. Use your social media expertise

Calling all social media queens! Believe it or not, you can use your Twitter skills to make money. Sites like IZEA actually give you money to tweet out updates in order to promote companies’ brands. You can sign up for free to be a creator, as long as you have a substantial Twitter following. All you have to do is explain why you would be a good promoter for a specific company, and you can make up to $50 for just a few tweets. Why not get paid to go hashtag crazy?

3. Get paid for your photos

We’re all guilty of getting a little snap-happy with our camera phones from time to time, but don’t delete any photos just yet! There are tons of stock photo websites that will buy your most artsy pictures. With Foap, you can post photos online or through the iPhone app for companies to browse. You can upload as many photos as you want, and if one gets chosen, you make an easy five dollars. You may just end up seeing your photo on a major advertisement, collegiettes!

4. Make money with your sense of humor

Not only is writing articles good practice and a resume builder, but some websites will actually offer you money for it! If you love writing and have a great sense of humor, try submitting your work to CollegeHumor. If the editors like your article, you can make a flat fee of $25 dollars. An added bonus is that the more online traffic your piece gets, the more money you can make!

Making money online is simple and can help you develop awesome skills for the future. With these methods, you can make your own hours and participate as often as you want! Whether you love photography, writing, giving your opinions or even tweeting, there’s an opportunity out there for you.

Is Katy Perry Responding to Taylor Swift's 'Bad Blood'?

$
0
0

According to reports, Katy Perry has just registered the song title "1984" with her music publisher, BMI. This title is suspiciously similar to the name of Taylor Swift's newest album, "1989." Both names are in reference to the years in which the stars were born - Perry was born in 1984, and Swift in 1989.

"1989" includes the infamous song "Bad Blood." The angry track was allegedly written in reference to a feud between Swift and Perry. During an interview with Rolling Stone in 2014, Swift said that it was about another female artist, but she wouldn't name names. "She did something so horrible," Swift told the magazine. "I was like, 'Oh, we're just straight-up enemies.' And it wasn't even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me." The day after the interview was published, Perry tweeted, "Watch out for the Regina George in sheep's clothing."

Swift recently released the highly-publicized music video for her single "Bad Blood," which stars Selena Gomez as Arsyn. In the video, Gomez wears her hair in a dark brown bob that is reminiscent of Perry's 'do.

There is a ton of speculation that "1984" is Perry's musical retaliation to "Bad Blood." Is this song what Perry was referring to when she told Billboard, "If somebody is trying to defame my character, you're going to hear about it," we wonder? Only time will tell.

The 8 Memories You Make in College (& How to Save Them)

They say college will be the best four years of your life, and let’s be honest: they’re 100 percent right! Whether you’re spending your time kicking butt on a school team, bonding with your sorority sisters, singing with your a capella crew or volunteering off campus, you’re constantly making new connections and making memories you’ll want to save forever.

And we know there’s one thing you’re constantly collecting that embodies those memories: T-shirts. Don’t lie – you have tons of T-shirts lying around, each of them representing another awesome, unforgettable moment from college. Make sure to save those memories – that’s where Project Repat comes in. Project Repat upcycles your old T-shirts into T-shirt quilts so you can weave all your memories together, and save your school spirit (or team spirit, or sorority spirit, and so on) all in one place. What will you remember? Definitely these 8 memories you’ll make in college:

Because there’s no love like sorority love, and you’re obsessed with your Big (and your Little). Sisters for life isn’t a motto; it’s a promise.

The best memories are the ones you make when you’re procrastinating. Which is, like, every night in college.

So many perfect hours spent rooting on the team – here’s to being a diehard fan for life! Superfan status achieved.

Those who volunteer together, stay together. Good thing you spent Saturdays volunteering with your roomies – hello, friends for life!

One of your best college memories: Collecting all those T-shirts and showing off your pride. Save your memories like the champ that you are – Project Repat will weave them together into a T-shirt quilt that’ll go way beyond your dorm years.

Two words, one goal: Survive. Finals. Caffeine in an IV, please?

Ah, the quintessential college shirt. If you don’t own one, you didn’t do college right.

Is there anything more to life than Ultimate Frisbee? You plan to never find out. You practically sleep in your Ultimate shirt.

Who says you can’t show off your school spirit in the real world? Just because college is over doesn’t mean your memories have to fade away, too. Take that massive pile of school pride T-shirts and make something memorable. Upcycle them with Project Repat, stat, or make a gift for a friend who’s got more T-shirt memories than he knows what to do with. Now’s the time!

7 Curveballs Nick Threw on 'The Bachelorette'

The breakup of one of the most talked about couples in Bachelorette history—Clint and JJ, of course!—was quickly overshadowed by the arrival of past contestant Nick Viall. Yep, that Nick. The Nick that publicly slut-shamed Andi on last season’s After the Final Rose special. But if you were thinking Nick had crawled back under whatever rock he came from, think again. Because with another new woman to court and manipulate you can add him to the pack of guys looking to win Kaitlyn’s heart. Below, we’re breaking down the 7 curveballs Nick threw on this week’s episode.

1. Showing up to Kaitlyn’s group date…

With Ashley I. in tow no less. What was the thinking behind this charade? That it would give Kaitlyn a valid excuse to wander into the crowd and unknowingly bump into Nick, who she had supposedly struck up a friendship with on social media? We want to use so many air quotes here. And the idea that producers didn't have a chance to get Nick mic’d up before his chat with Kaitlyn? Yeah, we’re not buying it.

2. Making Kaitlyn strangely excited to see him

This was just our first clue that Kaitlyn’s relationship with Nick might have been a bit more developed than she was letting on. She was awfully excited to see this man she’s never met before.

3. Putting a damper on the group date vibes

Clint had just been accused of monopolizing the guys’ time with Kaitlyn earlier in the evening, but making the group date after party Nick-centric seemed to bother no one. Sure, feelings were hurt, but the gentlemen were more than willing to dish on the villain-to-be.

4. Kissing Kaitlyn pretty much immediately

Before Kaitlyn had even agreed to let Nick stay, he was already kissing her while she snuck out of her date to meet him. And from there, we knew she had already made up her mind.

5. Gifting us the presence of Ashley S.

If there’s one thing Nick did right, it’s bringing the most entertaining Ashley of them all back into our lives. We bet you’re wondering what she has to do with this situation. Well, Kaitlyn needed some advice about Nick, and who better to turn to than her hairdresser? Shocker: she was surprisingly wise and insightful. We’re seeing a pretty promising spinoff in Ashley’s future.

6. This cliffhanger

We shouldn’t be all that taken aback by the guys wanting to beat their chests and threaten Nick before he even walks through the door. After all, they’ve been on some pretty violent dates as of late. But it’s also obvious no one is going to put the smackdown on the soft, sensitive Nick once he joins their ranks. But why not just show us what happens when he walks through the door? Cruel, ABC!

7. Giving Andi the opportunity to speak her mind

We’ve always loved Andi’s honesty, which makes her in a lot of ways like Kaitlyn. So, following her Twitter feed during last night’s episode was a real treat. Needless to say, we’ll be tuning in to get her thoughts as long as Nick’s around.

What other curveballs do you think Nick is responsible for this week, collegiettes?
