10 Things We Hope to See in the Third Season of 'OITNB'

0
0

There are less than two weeks left until Orange is the New Black returns to Netflix, and we could not be more excited. While binge-watching seasons one and two in preparation for June 12, we compiled a list of the 10 things we’d most like to see in the third season of OITNB.

1. New Characters

The women of Litchfield Penitentiary are the heart and soul of the show. Season two brought with it fresh faces, and we know that season three won’t disappoint. Already confirmed is Australian actress/model/DJ Ruby Rose, who will be playing new inmate Stella Carlin. We. Can’t. Wait.

2. Pop Culture References

Whether it’s a nod to The Fault in Our Stars, Taylor Swift, or Twilight, the show’s clever references always make us smile. There’s just something about these women discussing Beyoncé and Jay-Z that makes us connect with them that much more. What will they bring up in season three?

3. Quotable Phrases

Part of the reason we love OITNB so much is because the show is so well-written. The witty back-and-forth is perfectly suited to each character, and many of the memorable quotes make for great tweets. We’re pumped for even more quotable material from the new season.

4. Words of Wisdom

These ladies can speak the truth. Almost every episode has at least one deeper message, but the meaning doesn’t ever hit you over the head. Once in a while, an unexpected character will say something that really resonates. What will we learn from the third season?

5. More Dancing

Our favorite moments happen when the women are all together, dancing, singing and having a great time. As much as we love the drama, seeing the ladies of Litchfield acting like one big family truly warms our hearts. Hopefully season three has its fair share of moves!

6. Girl Power

Season one was heavy on the romance, but in season two we saw a lot more friendship. The characters form bonds during their stay, and we love the close relationships in the show. Who doesn’t want a supportive friendship like Taystee and Poussey’s?

7. Character Backstories

The highlight of the show is learning about the characters’ pasts, and what got them to where they are now. We love learning why these women are the way they are, and what made them commit the crimes they committed.

8. Lots of Drama

OITNB is a guilty pleasure show for a reason! We LOVE the drama. It’s pretty much a given, but we hope season three provides (at least!) three times the excitement.

9. …And a Few Tears

Only the best shows make us cry. We hope that this season will have a few tear-jerking episodes. We need something to break up all the laughs!

10. Seriously, More Dancing

Need we say more?

How to Stock Your First Real Life Kitchen

0
0

Moving into your first place can be a very exciting milestone, but where to begin?! You’ve come a long way from your college kitchen days when dishes were stacked high in the sink and your fridge was always empty (save for those half-full wine bottles). Having a place of your own means you need to know how to maintain your kitchen with all of the food essentials and tools so you are always ready to prepare a meal or whip up a snack. Follow these tips on what to stock in your shelves, fridge, and counter and you’ll be set for life!

1. Kitchen tools

Kitchens can seem like one of the hardest rooms to pack for, because there are so many tools and gadgets that you’ll eventually need! From baking and sautéing, to mixing and stirring, it’s smart to have all of the right equipment before you start cooking. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert chef, these necessities will be useful when first settling into your new kitchen.

  • Measuring tools
  • Spatulas/wooden spoons
  • Can/bottle openers
  • Coffee maker
  • Tupperware
  • Casserole dish
  • Pots and pans (variety of sizes)
  • Mixing bowls/cookie sheets
  • Cutting boards/large knife set
  • Oven mitts
  • Plates/glasses/silverware
  • Blender
  • Toaster oven
  • Colander
  • Aluminum foil
  • Plastic wrap
  • Oven and counter cleaner

2. Stocking your fridge, cabinets, and countertops

Stocking your first kitchen with all the proper utensils is just the beginning. Your next step is to make sure your fridge, cabinets and countertops are never vacant. It’s important to have some staple items that you can use to make for a variety of meals no matter what you’re in the mood for, as well as extras so you’re always ready to cook for yourself or a group of friends! These fundamental foods are perfect for any snack or dish you need to make.

Fridge

  • Eggs
  • Butter
  • Milk
  • Lettuce
  • Variety of vegetables & fruits
  • Cheese

Freezer

  • Frozen veggies/fruits
  • Frozen waffles/breakfast foods
  • Bread
  • Shrimp
  • Frozen dinners

Shelves

  • Pasta/Rice
  • Seasonings
  • Cereal
  • Canned soup/veggies
  • Peanut butter
  • Flour
  • Crackers
  • Olive oil
  • Baking soda
  • Jar sauce
  • Sugar
  • Coffee and/or tea
  • Bananas
  • Ketchup/mustard

3. Sink and dishwasher

When moving into your first place, remember to pack cleaning supplies, especially the ones you’ll need for your kitchen. Maintaining a tidy kitchen is key when preparing food, and it doesn’t take long for dirty dishes to pile up. Acquire the following supplies and you’ll be easily able to tackle any disaster in no time and keep your place in tip-top shape!

  • Sponges and scrubbers
  • Dish towels
  • Dish soap
  • Drying rack
  • Hand soap
  • Paper towels
  • Multi-purpose cleaning spray
  • Cleaning/disinfecting wipes

4. How to save

It’s easier than ever to make sure you’re saving money through the use of grocery apps and coupon websites such as Coupons.com and RedPlum.com. You even download savings apps to your phone! For example, Grocery Pal shows you where the best deals are in any supermarket and pharmacy and Coupon Sherpa offers a variety of deals with a barcode to scan at the register. You can also sign up for promotions through email subscriptions or even follow the store’s social media accounts to keep up with the latest sales. Ivy Mellow, Head Chef and owner of Ivy’s Simply Homemade in Connecticut, says there are many tips on how to save in the kitchen. “Growing your own herbs and vegetables at home will save you a lot of money and it is easy to do. Also, to avoid messing up recipes and wasting food, start with simple recipes from online and pay attention to the reviews to see if they are successful or not,” she suggests. Additionally, making simple decisions while you shop, such as buying some generic goods and using your freezer to make sure your food doesn’t spoil, can make a huge difference financially.

In the end, moving into your first place can be an overwhelming step. However, your meal prep doesn’t have to be. Keeping your kitchen stocked with a variety of healthy options is far less stressful when you have the correct tools and know what to shop for. Now that you know what to buy and how to save, you’re ready to prepare and cook amazing meals that will impress both friends and family!

This Collection From Levi's Will Get You Ready for Pride Month

Levi's is once again celebrating the LGBTQ+ community with its new Pride Collection. The brand's Pride collection from 2014 is growing and now included patch-covered, rainbow-themed apparel.

"As a long-standing friend of the LGBTQ community, we're showing some love with a collection celebrating key moments in gay rights history,"reads the Levi's website

The acceptance that is key to the collection’s branding expands beyond just aesthetics. Rather than buying into rigid conceptions of gender, all of the clothes in this collection are unisex. You can only buy the clothes in-store at a few locations, but luckily everything is available for purchase online.

If you need even more of an incentive to check out the Pride line, part of the profits will go to the Stonewall Community Foundation, which supports the LGBTQ community in New York City. It’s named after one of the collection’s primary inspirations, the Stonewall riots. These riots were violent demonstrations in NYC in the late 1960s, and they were led by members of the gay community who were frustrated by the abuse they suffered at the hands of the city’s police force. These riots played a huge role in the gay liberation movement that took place over the decades that followed.

If you're planning a trip to a Pride celebration this summer, now you know where to shop first! Visit the Pride page on the Levi's website for more information about where you can shop this collection in-store, as well as a list of the Pride events that will be taking place in those locations this summer.

Chipotle is Testing a New Ingredient for Its Menu!

Nothing beats a good burrito. And for most collegiettes, Chipotle is not only a staple; it’s a way of life. Now you might be able to step up your burrito game even more because the popular Mexican food chain is testing chorizo as a new menu item.

According to The Kansas City Star, Chipotle is introducing chorizo, a Mexican-styled sausage, to 33 Kansas City locations. If the new ingredient tests well, there’s a possibility it will become a menu item across the country.

Chipotle’s corporate chef, Nate Appleman, is excited for the new menu addition. “I’ve been beating the drum for five years,” Appleman told The Kansas City Star.“It was one of the first things I worked on.”

Since its creation over two decades ago, Chipotle hasn't changed its menu much. In 2013, it introduced tofu Sofritas, a vegetarian option originally tested in the San Francisco Bay Area. The addition of chorizo is, in part, a response to the recent shortage of pork.

“Chorizo uses ground meat from various parts of the hog, so adding it may help ease that supply-chain glitch when wasting less of the animals they do have,” The Kansas City Star reports. This follows the company’s “Food With Integrity” mission of buying ingredients from farmers who raise livestock and grow produce without antibiotics or hormones.

Chorizo is “a blend of ground chicken and pork with paprika, cumin, garlic and red wine” and Appleman suggests pairing it with “white or brown rice, black beans, tomato salsa, sour cream or cheese and maybe a little guacamole.” Fingers crossed chorizo does well in Kansas so we can all try it!

17 Things That Happen When You're at Your Hometown Bar

0
0

Call it the product of living in a small town, but it seems like these days there are only a few bars worth attending in your hometown. Too bad that everyone else knows about them, too. The result? Every night out during summer break is like the high school reunion that you never asked for.

1. Why does everyone congregate at this bar? It's like the high school class of 2011 watering hole.

And the classes of 2010 and 2009? 2008, too, really? Why are you people still in this bar?

2. Oh, wait, there are some girls from the grade below you...

Pretty sure they're not 21.

3. Whatever, you and your friends will just grab some drinks and find a spot to judge everyone.

It's what you all do best.

4. Look who's here. It's Amy, the girl who stole your boyfriend senior year. You wish you could just...

It might've been four years ago, but I still hate you, Amy.

5. And there are all of your high school exes in one place. How convenient.

Not.

6. Everyone is treating you like you haven't changed a bit since you graduated high school.

It's been four years. That's not true, right? Right?!

7. Why are we all hugging one another?

You probably couldn't even tell me what college I go to without consulting Facebook.

8. "Let's grab coffee! I'd love to catch up!"—That girl who was never nice to you. Ever.

How about we don't and say we did.

9. Was that your high school crush you just saw?

Yup, still hot.

10. Weren't we supposed to wait a few more years before getting together to humblebrag?

Humble-bragging is nice when it's you doing the bragging, but this is just annoying.

11. Let's pretend it's not totally weird to dance with a guy in front of the people who watched you go through puberty.

Just kidding, it's way too awkward.

12. Wow, it's like every girl you've ever known is in the bathroom right now.

And it looks like Carla is still a drunk crier.

13. Some things never change.

Except you. You've changed. But the girls dancing on the bar are the girls you always knew would be dancing on the bar.

14. If you have to tell one more person what you're doing after you graduate, you're going to explode.

This is worse than what happens at family parties. Especially because it seems like everyone has their life together but you.

15. You're going to need another shot—or four—if you're going to stay here all night.

Keep 'em coming.

16. You really lucked out with your group of high school friends.

Because who else would have endured this pain with you?

17. Some of these people aren't half bad, but you'll probably find another bar to go to next weekend.

And every weekend for the rest of your life.

Lauren Conrad Isn’t Using the Word ‘Skinny’ on Her Blog Anymore

0

Lauren Conrad, fashion designer, author and the only reason we watched “The Hills” for so long, announced on Monday that she will no longer use words like “skinny” or “thin” on her blog, LaurenConrad.com

In her Letter from Lauren: June Shape Up, she wrote to her readers, “Starting this month, we’ll be banning any body shaming terms from the site [like ‘skinny,’ ‘slim,’ and ‘thin’] and replacing them with words like ‘fit,’ ‘toned,’ and ‘healthy.’”

The post received positive comments from readers, one writing, “Great move, Lauren! I know some people may complain about being overly [politically correct], but the fact of the matter is that everybody’s goal is to be fit and healthy, not just skinny.”

While Conrad’s “summer shape up” posts will revolve around effective workouts and healthy recipes, the focus will be more on celebrating on being fit, not a size 4. “The word skinny will now be reserved for skinny jeans,” Conrad wrote on her site. “Every body is created differently—and healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes.”

What do you think about this move, collegiettes?

Love Locks Removed from Pont des Arts Bridge

0
0

Paris has always been the “city of love,” and for good reason—everything about this beautiful French city screams romance. At the helm of the romance that surrounds the city has always been the Pont des Arts bridge, better known as the Love Lock Bridge. For years, sentimental lovers have clasped a lock, which usually bore their names or initials, onto the bridge's iron grillwork. Once the lock was fastened, the key would be tossed into the Seine, symbolizing that their love would last forever.

Unfortunately, just as many of those relationships have surely crumbled over the years, it appears that the bridge that was once home to their love locks faces the same fate.

City officials have been discussing the hundreds of thousands of locks covering the bridge for months. Not only do some consider the locks to be visually unappealing, but the sheer weight of the metal has been degrading the bridge at an incredibly rapid pace. In fact, CNN reports that the total additional weight added by the locks is approximately equivalent to the weight of 20 elephants. Clearly this kind of unanticipated weight posed some very valid safety problems to city officials.

Once the iron grillwork is removed, and the locks with it, panels painted by street artists will take its place. Eventually, the city will implement the historic grillwork once more, protected by plexiglass

While some are saddened to hear the news about the lost Love Lock Bridge, others aren’t concerned. The Pont des Arts bridge may be symbolic of romance, but it is not the only Love Lock bridge out there. Locks have found their way all over the city of Paris, latched onto various grillwork that lines the many bridges in the city. In fact, they have even made their way to other major international cities. So although your next trip to Paris may not include a walk along the famous Pont des Arts, you can still expect to find love locks scattered around the city.

8 Male Child Stars Who Got WAY Hot

We’ve all had our awkward stages that we’d rather pretend never happened (shout out to those middle school dance pics), and famous people are no different. Check out our favorite celeb transformations that made us thankful for puberty!

1. Matthew Lewis

Well done, Neville, well done. 50 points to Gryffindor!

2. Josh Peck

Sorry Drake, but after Josh grew up (and slimmed down), he successfully stole the title of "Most Attractive Sibling."

3. Zac Efron

Troy Bolton was cute and all, but we fell for Zac Efron again after he ditched the long hair and basketball uniforms and turned totally swoon-worthy.

4. Taylor Lautner

Sharkboy made the transition from spiky-haired kid to buff, permanently shirtless werewolf seamlessly.

5. Josh Hutcherson

He may still be short in stature, but with that adorable face and sweet demeanor, we’re Team Peeta all the way.

6. Joseph Gordon-Levitt

We loved precocious, young JGL, but now that he’s all grown up (and married!), Joseph is as suave and classy as they come. The man knows how to dress!

7. Leonardo DiCaprio

Let’s be real: there really wasn’t ever a time when Leo wasn’t gorgeous. But we all enjoyed his evolution from baby-faced teen to leading man.

8. Justin Timberlake

The world became a more beautiful place the day JT exchanged his frosted tips and boy-band persona for a “suit and tie,” stubble and seriously sexy dance moves.

How to Keep Sweat at Bay During the Hottest Days of Summer

0
0

Let's just face it... humans sweat—and it can be pretty gross. During the summer, sweating is at an all-time high. No matter how little clothing we wear, it doesn't seem to stop. Our hair sticks to our necks, our makeup runs, and it's all-around uncomfortable. While the heat is vicious during summer months, there are ways to reduce sweating and keep us from looking totally drenched all day!

1. DERMAdoctor 'MED e TATE' Antiperspirant Wipes - $48

A few hours out in the sun, and your deodorant begins to wear off. Keep your pits dry with these patented wipes, which are fortified with botanicals. These wipes work wonders in the summer—just apply, give it time to dry completely, and then enjoy your time in the sun!

2. Neat 3B Face Saver Gel - $31.90

Trying to get rid of the glisten on your forehead? Use this gel to keep it under control; you can even use this product under makeup and sunscreen! Thanks to the gel formula, there is no residue or stickiness. Apply it to your forehead, upper lip, and back of the neck, making sure to keep the gel away from the eyes.

3. Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets - $4.69

Higher temps mean oily faces get that much worse. Absorb oil instantly and leave makeup in place with these sheets from Clean & Clear. They're great to throw in your purse for on-the-go touchups!

4. My Dry Antiperspirant Pads - $7.49

If your underarms just don't stay dry no matter how much antipersperant you use, you might need an extra layer of protection! To solve the problem, apply these pads to the armit area of your clothing. They're easy to use and protect from stains, wetness, and odor.

5. Johnson's Baby Powder - $4.99

Baby powder is one of those products that serves a number of purposes. If your feet sweat a lot during the summer (which is not uncommon!), apply baby powder to your feet and inside your shoes. And if your scalp is sweating (causing oily hair), apply baby powder to the roots and brush through. It'll absorb the oil and leave hair looking fresh and clean.

6. Urban Decay De-Slick Oil-Control Makeup Setting Spray - $30

To keep your makeup from sliding off your face in the hot sun, add this setting spray to your daily routine. This spray controls oil and keeps your complexion matte. It prevents makeup from smudging so touch-ups are rarely needed throughout the day!

What tricks do you use to control sweat during the summer, collegiettes?

13 Thoughts We Have During the First Week of Summer

0
0

School is out which only means one thing:

Goodbye winter, helllooo summer! Time for beautiful weather, sleeping in (on weekends at least!), beach days and tan lines. We can’t help but rejoice once summer rolls around, especially for that first glorious week.

1. “Yes, I can FINALLY sleep in for DAYS.”*

*Until our internships/part time jobs/parents make us get up.

2. “Or just watch Netflix all day, every day.”

#sorrynotsorry

3. “And if I get bored, I can always hit the beach.”

Sand and surf, how we’ve missed you.

4. “Oh shoot, it’s bikini season, like now.”

**Furiously Googles Victoria Secret bathing suit sales and ab workouts**

5. “Whatever, as long as I can work on my tan, I’m good.”

Hopefully ending up like a bronzed goddess and not a scorched lobster.

6. “Is it too early to think about my 4th of July outfit?”

It’s never too early to rep #MERICA.

7. “I really want to go to the community pool… but not run into everyone from high school.”

The struggle is real.

8. “Third night hang out around a campfire? Count me in.”

If liking s’mores is wrong, then we don’t want to be right.

9. “And I have an excuse to eat ice cream every day.”

We have to cool down somehow!

10. “There’s nothing better than driving with the windows down.”

Now we can finally blast our music without our RA telling us to turn it down.

11. “Do I reaaaallyyyy need to start my internship next week?”

Experience is great; working 8 am to 5pm is not.

12. “All I want to do is hang with my friends and do nothing forever.”

Until we get bored three days later.

13. “Whatever, this summer is going to be amaaaazing.”

Obviously.

12 Times 'Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' Got Real

0
0

Although it's been more than 15 years since The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air first premiered, it still remains relevant. It's one of the funniest, most quoteable shows out there. Will hitting on any girl was the highlight of every episode and the amount of times we busted a gut laughing at the jokes made at Uncle Phil's expense made Fresh Prince a show to watch over and over again, because the episodes never got old. But then there were a few moments where it wasn't just a happy-go-lucky show, and the viewers learned some life lessons along the way. Below are the top 12 times Fresh Prince got really real.

1. When Will's deadbeat dad returned after 14 years

Yep, we went there. That scene. Hands down the most emotional episode of Fresh Prince was "Papa's Got A Brand New Excuse". In the episode, Will's dad comes back into the picture for a heart-wrenching thirty minutes and it ends with Will yelling at Uncle Phil, until before you know it, they're hugging and crying and we're hugging and crying our TVs.

2. When Jazz told it like it was

In the wake of the recent shootings of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown and every other nation-wide racial gun-related case, this scene hits home in a new way.

3. That time Aunt Viv educated will

Will's character in Fresh Prince showed his love for Malcolm X and his movement a lot throughout the series. But no one forgets that one time Aunt Viv explained to Will that you can hang as many posters as you want, but until you're educated about something, you can never truly say you're behind it. Well done, Aunt Viv. *insert clapping emoji*

4. When they addressed interracial couples

When everyone noticed Frank was.... "tall" (A.K.A. white) the show addressed how interracial couples were more surprising and (mostly) unaccepted in the 90's.

5. When Uncle Phil explained his real job

Will not having a father is a reoccurring theme of the show. Everyone took a moment of silence after Uncle Phil said: “I’m your father. It is my job to protect you. It’s a job I refuse to quit, and at which I can’t afford to fail. You are my son, Will. End of story.” *sobs*

6. When Carlton figured out an important life lesson

Oh, Carlton! We'll be your (real) friend!

7. That gun episode

When Will gets shot because of Carlton, no one could keep the tears in when Will demanded Carlton hand over the gun because this "just isn't him. It's them."

8. When Carlton got accused of being a "sell out" and stood his ground

The short jokes on this show never disappointed, but Carlton stood tall that day he told off someone who told him he was a "sell out" because he was a privileged black man.

9. When Uncle Phil taught us how to be better people (multiple times)

Preach on, Uncle Phil!

10. That time Geoffrey had a son

Who doesn't love the cynical butler? But everyone felt for Geoffrey when his son came into town just to con him out of his hard earned money, making fun of his butler career in the process. You're a good man, G.

11. That time a girl told off Will

Watching Will "pick up honeys" is probably one of the highlights of each episode, but that one time he tried joking around and a girl did not take it lightly calls for a moment of silence for all men out there who degrade women while trying to ask them out.

12. When Ashley grew up

Ashley was always the baby, so when she started dating, everyone had a hard time letting go. Multiple people shelled out love advice for the youngest member of the family, but when she told Will she could (basically) do whatever she wanted, it was then the fans knew little Ashley was gone forever.

Every character on that show brought something special to the show (even Jazz!). No matter how many times we watched Will get told off, shut down and/or made fun of, the boy from West Philadelphia always had the last word and will always be in our hearts. Now, to leave you with a little Will Smith humor:

Girl Code: 9 Rules for Collegiettes to Live By

0
0

It’s the set of rules to avoid girl drama, the answer to all those tough friendship situations and the guidelines to promote respect among all women. It’s more than an MTV show and even though it’s supposed to be unspoken, we’re speaking up about it. That’s right—we’re talking about girl code.

So, why is girl code so important in the first place? According to Jessica Rozler, co-author of Friend or Frenemy?, girl code is the female twist to the Golden Rule, aka treating others as you’d want to be treated. “I think EVERYONE should treat each other with respect,” Rozler says.  “It can’t hurt to have some rules to remind us of this fact. And yes—all of us need reminders from time to time.”

With this guide, collegiettes can get on the same page so we can all avoid the tears and drama we tend to cause one another. We’ve surveyed more than 40 collegiettes about boys, friends and how we treat other women overall. Get ready for the real girl code!

Rule #1: Avoid dating your friend’s ex—but if you can’t, talk to her about it.

So you’ve found yourself falling for you bestie’s ex-boyfriend. Needless to say, you’re truly between a rock and a hard place. While you can’t deny your feelings, you can’t shake the fact that you’ve shared a pint of Ben & Jerry’s with her while she cried her eyes out over him. What to do?

A whopping 75 percent of the surveyed collegiettes say that dating a best friend’s ex is completely off-limits. It’s particularly a big no-no if they dated for a long time, it ended badly or your bestie is clearly not over it.

“Personally, I wouldn’t date a friend’s serious ex,” Rolzer says. “I also wouldn’t date a guy my friend had even casually dated if it made her feel uncomfortable.”

However, the other 25 percent of surveyed collegiettes say it’s okay if the guy was a casual ex-hookup. A hook-up buddy or a casual fling implies that your friend wasn’t extremely emotionally invested in the guy, so it’s more acceptable for you to go for him.

“If your friend wasn't super into the the guy and she told you that she’s completely okay with it, then I think it would be alright,” says Kathy*, a senior from Gettysburg College. “But if she still has feelings for him, I would say no.”

Regardless of their answers, 60 percent of the surveyed collegiettes emphasized talking with your friend before starting any sort of relationship with her ex.

“If it happens you like your friend's ex, don't wait to talk about it,” says Sandra*, a senior at Furman University. “In fact, your friend should be the first to know that you may even have the smallest feelings towards him. Putting it off could ruin the friendship.”

Bottom line: tread lightly with dating ex-boyfriends. The best scenario is to eliminate that possibility completely, but if you really feel strongly about him, talk to your friend first. You never want to make your bestie feel uncomfortable or hurt by your decision.

Rule #2: If it’s your ex your friend is crushing on, be honest to your friend about your feelings for him.

What if the roles are reversed and your bestie has fallen for your ex? You really can’t picture your ex with anyone else (you were a pretty awesome girlfriend, after all), and it might be really weird to think that his “someone new” might be your best friend. Do you prohibit your friend from dating him or give her your blessing?

“Feelings are feelings,” says Lauren*, a junior at the University of Virginia. “Don't go banning your ex from people, because it'll just make you look and feel immature.”

That being said, be honest with your friend (and yourself) about your feelings toward your ex. Regardless if you’re over him or not, be honest about how you would feel if she dated him. Don’t give your bestie the go-ahead if you know it’s going to hurt your feelings or jeopardize your friendship.

“Just be honest about how you feel and don't do anything rash that could ruin a really good friendship,” Lauren says. “Over him or not, it still might be weird for your friend to date your ex, and that's expected. But don't act like it's all going to be okay unless you are actually okay with it.”

Give your friend props for talking to you first and have an honest conversation with her. At the end of day, you both just want each other to be happy. With an open conversation, you can reach a solution that you’re both comfortable with.

Rule #3: It’s sisters before misters; don’t let a guy get between you and a friend.

It’s the classic tale of two girls liking the same guy. He’s cute, smart and athletic… how could either of you resist? Even though it might be hard to get over his amazing blue eyes or adorable smile, 59 percent of surveyed collegiettes say it’s best for both of you to back off.

“If both [of] you like the same guy, he should be off-limits to both of you,” says Amanda*, a recent grad from Villanova University. “It will end badly, and no friendship is worth ruining over a boy.”

Things could become a little more complicated if the guy is clearly into one of you over the other, in which case, you should be honest with each other about it. “If you and your friend respect each other enough and care about the friendship enough, you would have an honest conversation about it,” Kathy says. “Either way, you shouldn't let it get in the way of your friendship.”

Ultimately, no guy is worth ruining a friendship over (100 percent of the surveyed collegiettes agreed on that!). You’re better off choosing friendship instead of a guy, because, at the end of the day, there are other fish in the sea, and you’re going to want your bestie there to help you catch one.

Rule #4: Always tell your friend if her boyfriend is a cheater.

So you saw your bestie’s SO locking lips with another girl last night. Even though it will probably break her heart, 89 percent of surveyed collegiettes say that you should tell her immediately—no exceptions.

“I would tell her ASAP,” says Michelle, a sophomore from Rutgers University. “If her boyfriend finds out I ratted him out, I wouldn’t care because she deserves better.”

Your bestie’s boyfriend is clearly disrespecting her by being unfaithful. It’s your duty as a friend to keep her best interests in mind and then support her through the aftermath. “I would tell my friend immediately and support her decision,” says Kelsey, a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “Then just be there to listen and take her mind off it when she’s ready.”

If you’re friends with the boyfriend, this situation could get a lot more awkward. That’s when 11 percent of surveyed collegiettes say you should approach him and give him a chance to explain himself to your friend before you say anything to her.

“Give him a chance to tell her,” Sandra says. “By doing this, you stay out of a messy situation. But if he doesn't follow through, tell her. You would want to know if you were in her shoes.”

It’s a tough situation, but your friend would feel extremely betrayed if she found out you knew her SO cheated and you didn’t speak up. However she decides to handle the situation is her choice, but she will appreciate the fact that you have her back!

Rule #5: Little white lies are okay, but honesty is the best policy.

Your friend just got her hair cut in a bob (it’s not her best look), and you smile and tell her that it’s different and chic. Or when she asks you if you thought the exam you just took was super unfair (it wasn’t, she just didn’t study as much as she should have), you immediately agree and comfort her about her C. Even though our mothers told us that we should never tell a lie, we find ourselves harmlessly fibbing to our friends from time to time. “I would be lying if I said that we should never, ever lie!” Rolzer says. “I think we all tell little lies to spare the feelings of people we really care about.”

While these little white lies are okay when you’re keeping your friend’s best interests in mind, 67 percent of surveyed collegiettes say that honesty is the best policy. “There’s really no reason to lie,” says Cassidy, a junior at Tulane University. “Things are always better when people are honest.”

Forty-seven percent also specifically say you should never lie to a friend about important stuff. Be real about how you feel if she likes your ex (see rule #2), if that $150 dress she’s about to buy is actually flattering (be gentle) or when you’re angry or upset with her (don’t say you aren’t when you actually are).

You trust your friends to be honest with you about the things that matter most. While you might fib that her homemade lasagna is to diiiiie for (you’re not the biggest fan), keep it real when it comes to the important things.

Rule #6: Help a girl out and tell her she has spinach in her teeth.

Most of the time, we walk around like we’re ***Flawless (#bowdown). But even if we woke up like this, sometimes our appearances are less than perfect. We’re talking smudged makeup, spinach in our teeth and toilet paper on our shoes; those annoying things that we realize once we look in the mirror after hours of being in public. Don’t you wish someone had just told you?

Part of girl code is helping other women out, which means saving them some embarrassment. While it might be awkward to tell a complete stranger that her lipstick is smudged, 77 percent of surveyed collegiettes say they would want to know. “Of course I would tell her!” says Kacey*, a sophomore from Saint Joseph’s University. “Nicely and discretely, of course. I’d want someone else to do that for me.”

It doesn’t matter if it’s the girl you occasionally see in calc class or if it’s your best friend; just let her know. If you’re at dinner, discretely motion wiping off your mouth if there’s something on her face, or quietly tell a stranger in the bathroom that there’s a run in her tights. It might be embarrassing for her in the moment, but just think how you would feel if you didn’t know you had a rip in your skirt or raccoon eyes all day!

Rule #7: Don’t be catty; no one likes a trash-talker.

Girls get the rep of being catty and fake behind their friends’ backs. While we don’t like to admit it, we’re all a little guilty of gossiping. However, there’s a difference between venting and malicious trash-talking.

When you’re in college, you see your friends all. The. Time. While most of the time it’s great, their dirty dishes in the sink and their consistent tardiness can occasionally get on your nerves.

“Everyone needs to vent,” says Rachel*, a senior at New York University. “I love my friends to death, but there are times they get on my nerves and I just need to rant a little.”

However, venting turns into trash-talking when you insult your friend’s behavior or personality, accuse her of things that may not be true or act nice to her in person and secretly diss her behind her back. “It's NOT okay to completely insult your friends behind their back,” Rachel says. “If you realize you’re saying hurtful things to the point you shouldn’t be considered friends, that’s not cool.”

Most girls like to talk through their problems and get advice from others. If you’re expressing your feelings about one of your friends, try not to vent to someone she’s also friends with, because that just causes more problems. Instead, talk to your mom or maybe a sibling; pick a neutral source so you don’t cause any more conflict.

Hear someone else trash-talking your bestie? Most collegiettes say to either try to change the subject or defend your friend in a calm way. “If I don’t agree with someone, I say why I disagree nicely,” Michelle says. “You don’t want it to blow up into an argument that could lead to more trash-talking.”

Of course our friends get on our nerves, but it’s better to avoid talking behind their backs. If there’s something really bothering you, it’s better to just confront your friend directly about it without getting others involved.

Rule #8: It’s really not cool to call her a sl*t.

“Sl*t-shaming” is making derogatory remarks about a woman’s sexual behavior. Have you ever thought, “Oh, wow—what is she wearing?” when you see a girl scantily dressed at a party? Or quietly whispered about a collegiette doing “the walk of shame” across campus? You may not realize it, but what you’re doing is sl*t-shaming.

“Sl*t-shaming, in my opinion, is our least attractive quality as women,” says Sarah, a senior at Pennsylvania State University. “For every time we’ve looked at a girl and judged her with no means to back it up, just think of all the times someone else has probably done that to us.”

Labeling another female a “sl*t” or a “wh*re” is simply disrespectful. We all want to be respected no matter what, and that respect should start woman-to-woman. “Keep your judgments to yourself,” Rolzer says. “It's bad enough when men do this, but it's especially terrible when women do it. It perpetuates this stereotype that women are catty and can't get along.”

Instead of mentally chastising a girl in a tight miniskirt, give her props for having the confidence to rock it. If you hear a rumor about what so-and-so did with a guy the other night, avoid the negative labels, because it doesn’t really affect you at all. It’s every woman’s choice to act or dress however she’d like; it’s not really your business or your place to judge them.

As females, we owe it to one another to support and respect one another’s decisions. “Women should be building each other up, not putting them down,” Sarah says. “In the end, sl*t-shaming makes us look ugly and mean, and that’s never a good look for anyone.”

Rule #9: Look out for one another, especially when alcohol is involved.

More often than not, you can see a handful of girls who are just a little too drunk at a party. While everyone has the right to their cocktails and tequila shots, every high-school health class taught us that too much alcohol doesn’t lead to smart decisions.

“NEVER abandon a friend that you go to a party with,” says Heather*, a junior at Yale University. “I don’t think it’s even okay to leave a party and go to a different one without the girl you came with. If you go out together, you stay together!”

While most of us have our friends’ backs (and will take care of them if they drink too much), keep an eye out for other girls at a party, even if you don’t know them. “We should look out for other girls, whether they’re friends or strangers,” says Kaela, a junior at Clemson University. “Being drunk can make you more vulnerable. If we take it upon ourselves to look out for each other when we’re out, there might be one less drunk girl taken advantage of.”

Ask your friend if she wants some water if she can’t keep her balance, approach a girl who’s leaving with a guy to ask if she’s okay or pull your friend down from the bar when she starts dancing a little too crazily. You can prevent a girl from making a decision she might regret or save her some embarrassment. Everyone wants to have a good time, and looking out for others can ensure that the night doesn’t end badly for anyone.

Whether it’s figuring out a boy dilemma or avoiding a fight with your besties, knowing the basic guidelines of girl code can help you navigate any situation. The basic idea of girl code is to treat others like you would want to be treated. Keep this in mind so you can avoid the drama and strengthen your friendships with other women!

Why Caitlyn Jenner Chose to Spell Her Name Without a 'K'

0

On June 1, Caitlyn Jenner proudly revealed herself to the world on the cover of Vanity Fair along with the proud title, "Call me Caitlyn." Since this debut, one recurring question had to do with her name. Noticing the obvious lack of a "K" in the spelling, many people wondered why Caitlyn intentionally chose to break the Kardashian family tradition. In am interview with Vanity Fair, Caitlyn explained her choice.

Selecting a suitable name was no easy feat for Caitlyn, who admits that the process began two years ago. "It's one of the hardest things in life—choosing your own name," she said. After watching the Miss America pageant on TV, a few different names stood out for her, like Heather and Cathy, but Caitlyn was the clear favorite. When her assistant independently suggested the name Caitlyn, Jenner knew that her dilemma had been resolved. “I love that name, too!” she excitedly told her assistant.

However, Jenner still had another decision to consider—whether or not she would spell her name with a "K," like the other members of the Kardashaian/Jenner clan (Kris, Kourtney, Khloe, Kim, Kendall and Kylie). Jenner ultimately chose to "break tradition and the media associations that went with it." Caitlyn's bold decision allows her to be her own woman and have her own identity, separate from the Kardashians.

Be sure to check out Caitlyn Jenner's interview in the next issue of Vanity Fair when it hits newsstands on June 9!

17 Away Messages You Totally Used on AIM

0

In an era where Razrs were the hot phone on the market and dial-up internet was still totally a thing, your AIM away message defined you almost as much as your choice of boy band (will the *NSYNC vs. Backstreet Boys debate ever TRULY be settled?). With no Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat Story to keep your friends up-to-date on your every move, your AIM away message was your go-to way to communicate with your many AIM friends, along with a few notorious robots (SmarterChild, anyone?).

The things we posted in our away messages were ALMOST as embarrassing as our deep-rooted love for gaucho pants, but, as we’re sure you once posted in an away message, "Everybody makes mistakes, everybody has those days - Hannah Montana."

Here are 17 totally classic AIM away messages that you definitely posted back in your instant-messaging days.

1. BRB showering...

Just in case the love of your life IMs you in the next 20 minutes and is offended by your lack of response.

2. ~*Profile currently under construction*~

You couldn’t let people think you just had a blank profile! How embarrassing.

3. I have the best friends! MD, GH, BL, MP, ST, NL, CR, AT, RE, BM and everyone else. You know who you are <33333333

Because in sixth grade you had to let everyone know how TRULY popular you were.

4. Movies w/ Rachel, then getting our nails done, then doctor’s appointment, then dinner, then bed :)

Who said play-by-plays are strictly for sports?

5. %n is so ugly, right?!

The original Internet trolling.

6. Hey %n, why are you looking at my profile at %t??

Just when they thought they had learned all your tricks, you fooled them yet again!

7. LiFe'S nOt AbOuT tHe BrEaThS wE tAkE, bUt ThE mOmEnTs ThAt TaKe OuR bReAtH aWaY ~~~~

For those days when you had to let everyone know how deep and inspirational you were.

8. So0o0o bored, someone IM me.

By “someone” you meant the cute boy from your P.E. class. Obvi.

9. Sister needs the comp for hw :/ BBL

The cute boy from your P.E. class JUST IMed you right when your sister suddenly needed the computer. WHY IS SHE RUINING YOUR LIFE?!

10. New SN! Add me: xX_heyyyitsSarah_Xx

You’re only as cool as your last AIM screen name.

11. away <3 hit the cell

Nothing was more satisfying than seeing the “new message” screen pop up on your pink Razr.

12. Don’t IM me; so mad right now.

Translation: Someone IM me right now so I can vent about whatever made me so mad.

13. ily Brandon <3 10/05/2005

They all said it wouldn’t last… and they were right. You two broke up the next day after an emotional convo at the cafeteria lunch tables.

14. DancingChick478 is idle

Clearly you were way too busy doing really important things to update your away message.

15. Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon ✧ ✦ ✹ ✸ ✷ ✶ ✵ ✴ ❂

Because your mom wouldn’t take you to get headshots so you could audition to be on the Disney Channel.

16. 11:11 make a wish <333

You probably wished that your mom would FINALLY let your upgrade your pink Razr to something much cooler: a Sidekick.

17. Can’t sleep :/ IM me if ur awake <3

Eleven o’clock on a school night in seventh grade is basically the equivalent of 3 a.m. on a school night in college.

As embarrassing as some of these are, we love to reminisce about the good old days of AIM. Don’t lie; you definitely posted at LEAST one of these back in the day. We sure did, and we’re not afraid to admit it!

When you step into your summer internship, you really have no idea what to expect. Sure, you went in for an interview or read everything you could about the company, but other than that you’re pretty much going in blindly. Your friends try to help, but their internship experiences were unique to the companies they interned with and they haven’t even heard of the place you’re interning! You’ve been reading Her Campus non-stop, memorizing what never to wear and how to act around your fellow interns. But you still have a million more questions about not just how to survive your internship—but to excel at it.

Fortunately, Her Campus has your back (no one knows internships like we do!). We’re partnering with General Assembly for our Summer Internships 101 workshop in Boston on June 24. Her Campus co-founders Annie Wang and Stephanie Kaplan Lewis will be on hand to tell you what to expect in the beginning of your internship, how to set internship goals for yourself, help you enhance a sub-par internship experience and, most importantly, how to turn your internship into a job offer. Because that’s what it’s all about, right?

The event will be at General Assembly Boston at 51 Melcher St. from 6:30-8:00 PM, the perfect post-internship event! Bring your fellow interns or friends also interning in the city and have them RSVP for the event here.

The event is meant to be interactive and to answer your questions about your internship experience. Anyone can tweet questions for Stephanie and Annie ahead of time and during the event using the hashtag #InternFAQ.

Your internship should be a great learning experience – not a source of stress over things like how to behave at an office happy hour. Summer Internships 101 will help you enhance your experience so you focus on the important things and flourish every step of the way! See you there!

Here's How Much You Have to Make to Afford Housing Across the U.S.

If you're planning on renting a standard two-bedroom apartment after college in just about anywhere in America, chances are you're going to have to rake in some serious money to afford it. A new study released by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, appropriately titled "Out of Reach," looked at median housing costs in all fifty states and determined the amount of money a person would have to make in terms of hourly wages in order to spend just 30 percent of their income on housing costs. The data is easily displayed in the map below:

national

Some states were no-brainers (New York, California and Massachusetts all ranking high up) but others were a little more startling—D.C. took the number one spot with a staggering $28.04 hourly pay in order to make rent. These numbers also point out the stark and disturbing disparity between minimum wage and the average cost of living. The median income in the U.S. is only $15.16 an hour, and the average cost of living ($19.35) is over two and half times the federal minimum wage. This means that a majority of Americans are spending more than 30 percent of their earnings on housing alone. It is a very grim outlook, and these prices are only expected to get worse as inflation continues. The study also analyzed and ranked the top states with the greatest gap between housing costs and average wages:

national

Of course, these numbers look specifically at two bedroom apartments for individuals, while most recent grads are likely to be sharing spaces with their peers, which cuts costs. But even so, it paints a pretty grim image of the situation collegiettes are graduating into.

Laverne Cox Responds to Caitlyn Jenner's Transition

On June 1, 2015 Caitlyn Jenner made her debut on the front cover of Vanity Fair—just a year and three days after famous transgender actress Laverne Cox (of Orange is the New Black fame) was featured on the cover of TIME Magazine. Moved by all of the support Caitlyn has received from the public, Laverne took to her Tumblr to express her sentiments about Caitlyn's transition. “It feels like a new day, indeed, when a trans person can present her authentic self to the world for the first time and be celebrated for it so universally,” Laverne writes.

In her post, Laverne discusses the language that has been used in the media to discuss Caitlyn's appearance. "This has made me reflect critically on my own desires to 'work a photo shoot' to serve up various forms of glamour, power, sexiness, body affirming, racially empowering images of my black, trans womanhood," the post reads.

She also mentions that she loves posing for inspiring images for her fans—but she adds, "I also hope that it is my talent, my intelligence, my heart and spirit that most captivate, inspire, move and encourage folks to think more critically about the world around them." Cox then translates this same concept to Caitlyn. "Yes, Caitlyn looks amazing and is beautiful, but what I think is most beautiful about her is her heart and soul, the way she has allowed the world into her vulnerabilities," Laverne writes.
