Forbes Announces the World's Most Powerful Women 2015

0
0

Every year since 2004, Forbes has announced a list of the world's most powerful women. The 100 most powerful women around the globe, from politicians to philanthropists to celebrities, are ranked in order by Forbes based on factors like "money, media momentum, spheres of influence and impact."

The 2015 rankings announced German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the most powerful woman in the world for the fifth consecutive year. Next year, however, she may be in danger of losing her spot for the first time to her current runner-up: Hillary Rodham Clinton, whom Forbes describes as "just a breath and a ballot away from the Most Powerful Woman crown."

Beyond Angela Merkel and Hillary Clinton, the list of the top 10 most powerful women in the world includes Melinda Gates, Janet Yellen, Mary Barra, Christine Lagarde, Dilma Rousseff, Sheryl Sandberg, Susan Wojcicki and Michelle Obama. This year's top ranking billionaire is Oprah Winfrey at number 12 overall; Oprah is personally worth approximately $3 billion.

Looking at the list by field, the most powerful woman in politics is Merkel, and the most powerful female philanthropist in the world is Gates. Barra is the most powerful businesswoman while Sandberg is the most powerful woman in the field of technology. Ana Patricia Botin is the most powerful woman in finance at number 18 overall. Beyoncé rules the entertainment field at number 21 overall, and Anna Wintour takes the media sector at number 28 overall.

Congratulations to all of the powerful women whose hard work and success has earned them a spot on this list! You inspire us every day to be the best women we can be.

The 5 Best Things About Being Single This Summer

0
0

We all realized long ago that Noah and Allie’s summer love from The Notebook might have been too good to be true. (Just kidding…we didn’t. But girls can dream, right?)

And although a summer romance does seem exciting and captivating, the reality is that sometimes (and by sometimes, we mean most of the time), boys cause more problems than they solve. And who wants problems over the summer?

Whether you’re taking a break from your relationship at school for the summer or just continuing your stint with the single life, here are a few reasons to embrace your summer of solitude and enjoy the sweet, simple, testosterone-free parts of life.

1. You’ll stress less

Summer is all about relaxing and de-stressing from the pressures of school. So why carry any stress into your vacation time? Boys equal stress. Whether you’re trying to decipher his ambiguous text messages, freaking out over what to wear to a movie date, or dealing with the pressure from your fling to do things physically, if your guy is causing more stress than he’s relieving with his movie-star smile, he’s not worth it, plain and simple. There will be plenty of guys waiting to stress you out when you get back to school in the fall—you can be sure of that.

And, if you absolutely can’t resist...

2. You’re free to have fun, flirty flings

Let’s set a few things straight: just because you’re not seriously dating anyone doesn’t mean you have to stay 100 percent clear of love interests this summer! When you’re not tied down to one person, you’re at liberty to have hot summer flings with whomever you want. If you keep an open, carefree mindset, you won’t prevent yourself from having fun.

Embrace your freedom and the fresh, go-with-the-flow vibe that accompanies summer. If someone you're attracted to comes your way, don’t be afraid to just go for it! Beach trips, fireworks, and ice cream cones are often better shared, whether it’s with one date or two (or three). And even if you don’t want to hook up with people this summer, you’ll still have the freedom to dance and flirt with other people, guilt-free.

3. You can take a technology detox

You shouldn’t be wasting away in front of a computer monitor when it’s beautiful and sunny out—same goes for a cell phone screen. Summer is the perfect time to go on a cleanse of the technology (not juice!) variety. With school on hold for three months, you no longer have to stay on top of emails from professors, club list-servs, or text message party invites. The same goes for the technology overload that always accompanies male interaction. Technology is a huge part of the college dating world, either in the form of constant texting, Facebook stalking his ex, or taking the daring step of following him on Instagram. Spend your well-deserved vacation on the beach, going on a hike with friends, or in your backyard with family—not texting him, waiting for him to text you, wondering why he didn’t text you back… you know the rest.

4. You’ll have more girl time

It can be really difficult to split time between your guy and your girl friends during the school year, but it becomes even harder at home over the summer when you have a lot of catching up to do with your high school friends. Everyone will also be on different schedules based on when they return from and leave for school, if they have summer jobs and internships, or if they’re traveling, so you’ll want to have as much time as possible to spend with all of them! Whether it be checking out the concert scene near you or just having a backyard barbecue, use your few summer weeks wisely to reconnect with the girls who mean a lot to you. You’ll realize how much you missed the people who know you so well, and they’ll only reinforce your confidence in the fact that you don’t need a guy to make you happy!

5. You’ll have more YOU time!

It’s hard to realize how much time boys can consume until you’re no longer dating one. This freedom will only get better during the summer months when classes, club meetings, and 12-page papers aren’t filling up your schedule. With all this free time, you’ll be surprised at how much you’ll get done and how great you’ll feel about it!

Madison, a student at Colgate University, is trying to make the most of her single summer and flexible schedule. “I’m interning and living in New York City with some friends this summer, and by the time we all get home from work around 6 p.m., we’re exhausted and excited to just have girl time,” she says. “It’s nice not having to worry about looking hot for my guy or planning dates when I’m really wiped from work.”

Madison says being single for the summer lets her do what she really wants to do. “I also love that since I’m not tied down by a boyfriend, I can plan awesome trips with my roommates to museums and shows that boys wouldn’t really want to go to,” she says. “I even have enough free time to take an Arabic language class on Thursdays and Fridays, which I’m really excited about.”

Don’t want to take a class? Try knocking some books (or movies) off your bucket list, finding a new running trail, learning a new skill, finally trying those awesome DIY projects you’ve pinned on Pinterest, or taking a road trip with your family. They miss you! You are more important than any summer fling will be, so take some time to focus on you.

Whether you’re packing in the activities and adventures or just taking time to breathe post-school, you should focus on what makes you happy this summer... whether that includes a guy or not is up to you!

Happy summer, collegiettes!

11 Reasons Your High School BFF is Your Best BFF

Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, but the other has enough dirt on you that they could incriminate you in a court of law...or something like that, right? There’s a reason your high school best friend has turned into your forever friend, and it’s not just that they’ve seen it all.

1. She’s been with you through all of the bad decisions you’ve made when you were ~*young and stupid*~

And she still loves you.

2. And for every fashion trend you’ve plowed your way through.

And no one should have to live through again. (Shout out to JT and that turtleneck, though.)

3. Your awkward stages weren’t awkward enough to scare her away.

But they were just awkward enough that she can joke about them.

4. Your sleepovers are perfectly crafted works of art.

Rivaling any cheesy teen movie anyone has ever seen.

5. She knows all of your secrets. Like the time you snuck out past curfew to see that boy.

Hell, she probably helped you pull it off.

6. And was fiercely loyal through all of the high school drama.

If you hated someone, she hated them, too.

7. She’s spent hours listening to angsty teen bands with you when you broke up with your boyfriend.

Ashlee Simpson, anyone?

8. Because how many days in a row can someone eat dinner at your house before your parents joke about adopting them?

You were part of her family, and she was a part of yours.

9. You’ve gotten in a good bit of trouble together...

What’s friendship if not a detention shared between friends?

10. Because she was by your side for all of the “When I was in high school” stories you’re still telling your friends.

You might want to stop telling “When I was in high school” stories, though...

11. Going to college didn’t change a thing for you two.

Unless you count the 2,000 additional Skype sessions you’ve added to your friendship.

6 Cell Phones You Begged Your Parents for at Some Point

0
0

It's hard to imagine living without your cell phone now, but the fact is, you’ve lived around half of your life without one. Depending on when you got your first phone, yours probably didn't even have a color screen! But as we time went on, phone companies began releasing cell phones left and right, each one cooler than the next. In case you’ve forgotten about the cell phones you tried to convince your parents to get you over the years, we’re here to remind you!

1. T-Mobile Sidekick

Thanks to Paris and Nicole, the Sidekick probably became the most sought-after phone that only the most spoiled tweens and teens actually had. If your parents refused to get you one, you weren’t alone. The sliding screen was mesmerizing for tweens and teens alike. Only a few cool kids at school had this gadget, and if they let you hold it for even just a few seconds, you would automatically move them to your Top 8 on Myspace.

2. LG Chocolate

Though we’re still confused by the phone’s name (its shape kind of resembles a chocolate bar...?), we have to admit that it was a pretty snazzy device back in the day. It came in a variety of colors and boasted a music player, which was a big deal for cell phones back in the mid 2000s. Plus, sliding the screen up and down was slightly addicting.

3. Motorola Razr

Even by today’s standards, the Razr was a genuinely cool cell phone. No flip phone before it had ever been that thin and sleek-looking. The flat buttons and compact design made it all the rage - at least, until you dropped it and it snapped in half. When and if your parents caved and finally bought you one, your friends had probably already moved onto the much cuter pink version.

4. Samsung Juke

If you don't really remember this phone, it's probably because it was released the same year as the first-generation iPhone. Despite the competition that would eventually crush it, the Juke was a cool phone in theory. The teeny size and swivel design were buzzworthy, even though the phone didn't have a Qwerty keyboard. But what drew you in was the MP3 music player, which had enough space to hold more than just a few Usher albums.

5. LG EnV

When the EnV was released in 2006, you likely had been through a number of cell phones already. From the outside, the EnV looked like your average cell phone that you could use to call your worried mother, but once you opened it sideways –voila, you had a keyboard that you could use to hit up all your buddies!

6. BlackBerry

By the time the BlackBerry rose to fame, owning a cell phone was a legitimate need for a teenager. All you needed to do was convince your parents that your non-BlackBerry-keyboard phone was simply not good enough anymore. The moment your parents bought you one, you took to Facebook to publish your BBM PIN, and then you surfed the web to buy silicone-like cases.

How crazy is it that not too long ago, cell phone features like a 1.0-megapixel camera, a music player and a keyboard were considered groundbreaking?!

25 Reasons 'Gilmore Girls' is Still Relevant

0
0

Gilmore Girls graced us with its presence on Netflix last fall, and we've been working our way through the ups and downs of life in Stars Hollow, CT, like it's our job. Seven years may have passed since the show was on the air, but it's still (always) one of our faves because its witty, real and heartwarming nature is timeless. Still need convincing? Here are 25 irrefutable reasons why:

1. The characters focus on the important things in life

2. ...like drinks

3. ...and hating the same things our friends hate.

4. Our guys can really learn from Luke!

....and Max

...and Jess

...and Dean

5. We can watch the Tristan-Dean fight over and over again... and imagine they were fighting over us.

6. ...And drool like Louise while staring at a young Chad Michael Murray.

His stint on the show was FAR too brief.

7. Rory's first "I love you" might just be the TV scene of the decade.

8. Because sometimes love is just really confusing.

9. But Lorelai knows how to turn our attitudes around with some good 'ole self-affirmation.

10. She learned to put a positive spin on things growing up with the most difficult mother of all time.

11.  And though Lorelai may not be traditional, she gives excellent motherly advice.

12. And passed on important values to Rory. Like her TV addiction.

13. Rory and Lorelai make us feel better about our lack of ability to function in morning classes...

14. ...not to mention our NEED for caffeine.

15. Rory shares our distain for excessive PDA...

16. ...and our serious struggles during finals...

17. ...and shows us how to handle mother-daughter disagreements like a pro.

18. Lorelai gets how happy shoes make us...

19. ...and that pizza solves just about everything...

20. ...and that cake is something we simply cannot live without.

21. But when food doesn't have the answer, our people do.

They're just the cutest mother-daughter pair, ever. #lifegoals

22. Because Paris's ambition is intense, but inspiring.

23. And even though she's an oversharer, we all want a Miss Patty in our lives.

24. And Kirk's working on a way for us to avoid the gym, so we HAVE to keep him around.

25. Plus, Emily is a straight-up boss.

If you learn nothing from Lorelai and Rory, learn this at least from Emily: Who run the world? GIRLS.

Why Job Shadowing is the Career Boost You Need

0
0

Ambitious women, listen up. If you haven't had a job shadowing experience before, now may be the time to change that. This could be just the career game-changer you didn't know you needed.

To put it simply, job shadowing is the act of following, or shadowing, a professional as he or she goes about the day-to-day responsibilities of his or her job. It's common for students both in high school and college to shadow professionals in order to learn more about a variety of career fields.

Why you should do it

Getting an inside look at a company you’re interested in will help you decide what you want to do with your life. During your time as an undergraduate, it's likely that you'll cycle through many different career goals and interests. There's no shame in this; exploring different career paths is one of the many advantages of going to college. Shadowing actual professionals as they do their job can provide you with enough insight to narrow down that ever-present question of, “What do I really want to do?”

Plus, spending time with a professional just may get you a foot in the door. For those of you who have graduated, are graduating soon, or who already have a pretty solid idea of the career you want, job shadowing presents an invaluable opportunity to get a first-hand look at the field you're aiming to break into—and maybe even a foot in the door, if you play your cards right. Spending a few hours at a place of business with the express intent to learn can mean making connections with those who work there, which can come in handy later, once you're on the job market.

Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to gain experience. Job shadowing is a chance for you to acclimate yourself to business settings and interacting with professionals. This is especially helpful for students who may not have any experience interacting with others in these environments; not only can a job shadowing experience demystify how things work in an office setting, but also it can get you accustomed to being in that world, which can decrease any general anxiety you may have about one day entering the workforce.

Ultimately, being proactive and seeking out opportunities such as these shows that you’re a go-getter. In short, participating in a job shadowing experience displays a dedication to your own professional goals and sets you apart as someone willing to take the time and effort to get involved in hands-on research.

How to make it happen

You career services center may be able to help, but even if they can’t set anything up, don't hesitate to take matters into your own hands. First, you'll have to narrow down what it is you're interested in learning more about. To keep things simple, decide on a single field and search within it. For example, those interested in journalism can research local magazines and newspapers. A good tip is to look into companies you'd love to work at one day, though smaller companies may be more accessible if you don’t have any prior contacts.

Emily Miethner, founder and CEO of FindSpark, a career development community for young creatives, stresses the importance of picking someone you’re truly passionate about meeting and whose job really interests you. As long as you do your research (via LinkedIn and company websites), your genuine interest will come across when you talk to them. “If you’re more specific as to why you’re reaching out, you’re more likely to get a response,” Miethner says.

Diana Martinez, assistant director at the Wasserman Center for Career Development at New York University, recommends reaching out to companies through LinkedIn, your school's alumni database, through faculty at school, or through your own networks of past colleagues, friends and family.

Martinez recommends starting out with an informational interview: Express your interest to spend between 15 to 20 minutes meeting wherever and whenever it’s most convenient or even just talking over the phone. Following that, you can hopefully then build your way up to spending a whole day shadowing someone.

“Cold calling somebody and asking to shadow them might spook them out,” Martinez says. “It's always best to start out small and then build your way up to something more concrete. You can outreach to the person who has the title or works in the area of your interest because that shadowing experience would be the most meaningful to you. When pitching your idea to shadow an employer, always reiterate that your presence will not be invasive and that you will not be affecting the overall operations of the company.”

The date is set—now what?

Once everything is in place, you'll want to make sure you have a few key things prepared: your research, questions, and a killer professional outfit. Include questions about dress codes when setting up the initial appointment.

As with any interview, you want to come prepared by having done your research about the company and armed with thoughtful questions. “If you get invited to a company staff lunch or are able to mingle with staff members, use that opportunity to discuss your interest in the company, your educational and professional background, and to exchange business cards, if the staff member asks for it,” Martinez advises.

This should go without saying, but always be as respectful and professional as possible; recognize that even if you’re as unobtrusive as possible, your being there does mean the office  has to make certain concessions for you. You'll also want to bring a small notebook for jotting down notes. If your nerves are a problem (and during what can feel like an all-day interview, no one would blame you), do all you can to calm them beforehand (meditation, soothing music, yoga or ice cream—whatever it takes!) and just remind yourself to follow the lead of the person you’re shadowing throughout the day. How he or she acts will set the tone.

If you’re curious about another department, proceed with caution. Some may be fine with introducing you to coworkers during your time there, but some may be offended, and there’s no real way to tell beforehand. “You're there to shadow a particular person, so it would be rude to say that you want to learn about a different department while you are shadowing him or her. However, if you want to ask for the contact info of a person from another department in order to hold a separate informational interview or shadowing experience, this is fine,” Martinez says.

Goodbyes can be awkward, but they don’t have to be. Beyond the staples (getting contact info if you don’t have it already and thanking him or her for his or her time), Miethner suggests asking the professional you’re shadowing if he or she has any final thoughts or advice for someone who’s at the point in your career where you are. Another idea is to ask a question or two that clearly grew from something that happened during the day —it shows that you’ve been paying attention.

Miethner also recommends students write or blog about their experiences. That way, you can end the day by taking a photo to publish or tweet (but always ask permission to share photos first, and double check that it’s okay to post about your experience and if there’s anything they’d like you to leave out).

Connecting on LinkedIn or on other forms of social media after—or even before the experience—is also recommended.

How to follow up

The importance of following up with thank you letters or emails cannot be stressed enough. It may seem like an insignificant step, but it's what will set you apart. Whomever you shadowed took time out of his or her schedule to allow a stranger to accompany him or her for a day on the job. It benefits you exponentially more than it does the professional, so be sure to show your gratitude with a sincere note (a simple “I wanted to thank you again…” is a good starting point) by email within 24 hours.

“If you want to impress them even more, you can send a hand-written thank you card to each person whom you met to reiterate your gratitude and how impressed you were by the visit. They will definitely remember this,” Martinez suggests.

If he or she implores you to keep in touch during your meeting, absolutely do so. Who knows? They may be able to put in a good word for you one day. An added benefit of job shadowing can be expanding your professional network, so don't let opportunities to do so pass you by.

“Ultimately, people will get you jobs, so the more people you know in the industry of your choice, and the more they remember you in a positive way, the better your chances are of landing that coveted job or internship interview,” Martinez says.

Job shadowing can seem intimidating at first. It’s not as popular as it was in the past, and the idea of asking a complete stranger to basically let you hang out with him or her for an entire day can be nothing short of terrifying. It’s important to push past any hesitation and go for it anyway—taking the steps to make it happen, no matter how awkward you may feel at first, is akin to investing in your career and, more importantly, yourself. Whether you're a freshman, a senior, or a recent college graduate, and whether you know what you want to do one day or you're more likely to follow in the footsteps of women who have created their own careers, job shadowing can benefit you exponentially, so it’s in your best interest to give it a shot!

How One Girl's Short Skirt Sparked a 'Leg Selfie' Movement

In Algeria, a girl took a stand against her university’s tough dress code and began a "leg selfie" trend that inspired women everywhere.

An unnamed law student in Algeria was turned away from an exam at the University of Algier because her skirt was considered too short by a security guard standing outside of the college, according to Buzzfeed. The Law Faculty at Algier argued that the college required a “decent outfit,” denying allegations of gender discrimination.

In an interview with an Algerian newspaper, the Dean of the Law Faculty defended the security guard in question. “Wearing a short skirt is not authorized inside the university… It’s their job to uphold the rules of the faculty," he said. "It requires a decent outfit, for both girls and boys.” He also called the incident “trivial.”

But some students, like Sophia Jama, did not see the situation as “trivial.” Jama, a classmate of the girl who was turned away from her exam, was enraged. She created a Facebook group to support the unnamed student, encouraging others to share photos of their bare legs in protest. The movement took on the name, “My dignity is not in the length of my skirt.” The group already has 15,000 followers who are uploading more and more photos every day to an album called “angry legs.”

Jama referenced a recent incident in France in which a Muslim school girl was told her skirt was actually too long. Jama described both cases as being “symptomatic of countries that have not settled their political and economic problems.” In an interview with France24, Jama said, “A woman’s body has become a battlefield in Algeria. If we keep silent, we women will lose a lot of what we have gained regarding our freedom in public places.”

The 8 Memories You Make in College (& How to Save Them)

0
0

They say college will be the best four years of your life, and let’s be honest: they’re 100 percent right! Whether you’re spending your time kicking butt on a school team, bonding with your sorority sisters, singing with your a capella crew or volunteering off campus, you’re constantly making new connections and making memories you’ll want to save forever.

And we know there’s one thing you’re constantly collecting that embodies those memories: T-shirts. Don’t lie – you have tons of T-shirts lying around, each of them representing another awesome, unforgettable moment from college. Make sure to save those memories – that’s where Project Repat comes in. Project Repat upcycles your old T-shirts into T-shirt quilts so you can weave all your memories together, and save your school spirit (or team spirit, or sorority spirit, and so on) all in one place. What will you remember? Definitely these 8 memories you’ll make in college:

Because there’s no love like sorority love, and you’re obsessed with your Big (and your Little). Sisters for life isn’t a motto; it’s a promise.

The best memories are the ones you make when you’re procrastinating. Which is, like, every night in college.

So many perfect hours spent rooting on the team – here’s to being a diehard fan for life! Superfan status achieved.

Those who volunteer together, stay together. Good thing you spent Saturdays volunteering with your roomies – hello, friends for life!

One of your best college memories: Collecting all those T-shirts and showing off your pride. Save your memories like the champ that you are – Project Repat will weave them together into a T-shirt quilt that’ll go way beyond your dorm years.

Two words, one goal: Survive. Finals. Caffeine in an IV, please?

Ah, the quintessential college shirt. If you don’t own one, you didn’t do college right.

Is there anything more to life than Ultimate Frisbee? You plan to never find out. You practically sleep in your Ultimate shirt.

Who says you can’t show off your school spirit in the real world? Just because college is over doesn’t mean your memories have to fade away, too. Take that massive pile of school pride T-shirts and make something memorable. Upcycle them with Project Repat, stat, or make a gift for a friend who’s got more T-shirt memories than he knows what to do with. Now’s the time!

Fat-Shaming Posters at the Lilly Pulitzer HQ Cause Outrage

Known for its preppy patterns and beachy apparel, Lilly Pulitzer made headlines last month when its exclusive Target collection completely sold out of stores and Target’s website shut down due to the overwhelming amount of online traffic. This week, the company is back in the news, and not for good reason.

Yesterday, Twitter erupted with criticism of the popular brand after New York Magazine published an article titled “Inside Lilly Pulitzer’s Pink-and-Green Headquarters.” In the article, NY Magazine featured a slideshow of Lilly's employees and "The Pink Palace" office, including a picture of a cubicle where one employee hung cartoons of overweight women.

Accompanying the drawings were offensive captions such as “Just another day of fat, white and hideous” and “Put it down, Carb Face.”

Followers of the brand reacted on Twitter, saying that they were “disappointed” in the company, with many accusing Lilly Pulitzer of “fat-shaming.”

In response, Jane Schoenborn, Lilly Pulitzer’s vice president of creative communications and spokesperson, said in a statement:

“These illustrations were the work of one individual and were posted in her personal work area… While we are an employer that does encourage people to decorate their own space, we are a female-dominated company and these images do no reflect our values. We apologize for any harm this may have caused.”

The employee responsible for the drawings has yet to comment.

Maggie Gyllenhaal Tells Hollywood Who's Boss

0

Hollywood is perhaps the mecca of ageism. The industry often shies away from stories centered on characters beyond a certain age; this is especially true for female characters. Actresses in Hollywood are under constant pressure to look a certain way, and if they don’t meet the qualifications, they don’t get the part. This makes it increasingly difficult to find female-driven movies. But when we do, they end up being pretty spectacular. For instance, look at Still Alice, for which Julianne Moore won an Oscar, as well as the popular Netflix show Orange is the New Black.

So, when 37-year-old Maggie Gyllenhaal was told she wasn’t young enough for a role, she had the perfect response

She told The Wrap, “It was astonishing to me. It made me feel bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh."

The talented actress, who has received Emmy and Oscar nods, was turned down for a role opposite a 55-year-old male character. Thankfully, Maggie isn’t going to let the systemic sexism of the industry get her down. “A lot of actresses are doing incredible work right now, playing real women, complicated women,” Maggie said. “I don’t feel despairing at all. And I’m more looking with hope for something fascinating."

As frustrating as it is to see incredible women like Maggie being treated disrespectfully, she is among many actresses standing up for themselves. We sincerely hope that Hollywood starts paying attention to women like her and treating them accordingly.

Amy Schumer Puts Bill Cosby on Trial

You've probably seen Amy Schumer's name pop up many times over the past couple of months. As creator and star of Comedy Central's Inside Amy Schumer, she is known for pushing the limits in the name of comedy. This season she's been tackling many big topics, but in last night's episode she really went for it. Schumer took on the Bill Cosby scandal and put him on trial, literally. Acting as Cosby's defense, Schumer jokingly bribed the jury with sweaters and pudding pops to sway their vote. In the end she received a thank you cocktail sent from Cosby, which she cautiously dumped out.

Schumer's smart and funny sketch about the Bill Cosby allegations achieved its goal: to get people talking. While many might shy away from addressing such a sensitive topic in fear of offending people, Amy managed to do so with class and honesty. In an interview at the Tribeca Film Festival Panel, Schumer explained her reasoning behind wanting to do the sketch: “We were like, ‘We want to address this. We don’t want it to go away without us getting to comment on it.’” Amy and her writers boldly wrote what's been on everyone's mind since the story was first exposed. Playing the defense lawyer, she explains in the sketch, “Let’s remind ourselves what’s at stake here: If convicted, the next time you put on a rerun of The Cosby Show, you may wince a little, might feel a little pain. And none of us deserve that. We don’t deserve to feel that pain. We deserve to dance like no one’s watching. And watch like no one’s raping.” While some people might feel that this topic was off-limits, Schumer really just helped express the idea that society protects individuals who have power or fame no matter what they are accused of. Topics such as sexual assault need to be discussed, especially in the media, and until society's notion of rape culture changes, we'll have to keep relying on comedy sketches and monologue jokes (remember Tina and Amy's moment at the Golden Globes?) to expose the popular opinon.

Real Live College Guy: How Do I Get Him to Talk to Me After I Cheated?

I cheated on my boyfriend last year, and we had been dating on and off for three years. I have moved on with someone else, however, there are times when I want to talk to him about what happened since it was such a messy ordeal. I only kissed another guy and I didn't even get to tell him myself; my friend was the one who told him I cheated, but she made up some pretty nasty stuff and things went way too far. I tried telling him at the time but he didn't believe me, we were both so upset, like I said I made a mess of things trying to fix it. Still to this day I've held my tongue and not rid [him] of all the lies that filled his head. What should I do? Just let it go, or should I try talking to him? At the end of the day, I guess it doesn't really matter; it's just that we were so close with each other and now I can't even hold a decent conversation with him. I suppose he wouldn't really care about me anyway? – Messy in Massachusetts

Massachusetts,

I don’t think it’s fair to assume that he doesn’t care about you. If anything, I think he’s so upset with the situation because he cares so much about you — and the fact that you would betray his trust like that (even just a kiss can do that) probably pushed him over the edge. Understandable. No guy wants his girlfriend to kiss another guy.

You can’t change the past, though. What’s done is done. Now, the issue is how you move forward with the situation, or whether or not it’s even possible to move forward.

I can’t give you a definitive timeframe of how long it might take the guy to get over everything, if he isn’t over them already. If he is over them and just isn’t talking to you, then let it be. You’re the one that cheated; I think you needing closure is a little much. I think you should try to talk to him, but give the man some space beforehand. If it’s over, it’s over.

If anything, you should really consider who’s really your friend. Anyone who goes out of his or her way to ruin a relationship like that isn’t worth the trouble.

17 Things Harder to Get Into Than College

When we were in high school, everything was about college; we worried about applications, standardized test scores and the dreaded acceptance letters. It consumed our lives. But now that we’ve made it past that struggle, we’ve found that our worries weren’t as big as they originally seemed. In fact, there are a lot of things that are harder to get into than college. For example…

1.  A club or a bar. Planning on kicking off the weekend with some drinks and friends? Expect to wait in line for at least an hour. Under 21? Even worse.

2.  The library during finals week. Any library. No matter how early you get there, or how late you stay, expect every seat to be filled with highly stressed and over-caffeinated students.

3.  Dreaming of a sweet scoop of Ben and Jerry’s on Free Cone Day? So is the rest of the population. Get in line—you know, the one that backs around the corner and onto the next five blocks.

4.  Or maybe you planned to go to Lollapalooza over the summer with some friends. Too bad 3-day passes sell out in minutes, crushing tons of hopes and dreams.

5.  Once you’ve made it to college, you’re ready to live it up during Welcome Week and head to some frat parties to get the true “college experience.” But all you’ll end up doing is getting blisters waiting outside while some frat stars stare at you blankly asking who you know.

6.  Office hours right before a massive paper or project is due. Everyone has messed up, and there’s only one person who can fix every mistake.

7.  Your New Year's resolution is to finally get that beach bod you’ve been putting off for years. Once you drag yourself to the gym on January 1st, you’re feeling good…until every single machine is taken. Every. Single. One.

8.  Even if you have all the grades, all the extracurriculars and a fantastic application, getting your dream internship is next to impossible.

9.  A full Netflix account. Think about the times when all you want is to watch Netflix, but your roommates are watching on the same account, so you end up getting blocked out and can’t get in until they’ve finished.

10.  Try getting into skinny jeans after eating pizza and ice cream.

11.  Or a getting into (and staying in) bed when you are very, very drunk.

12.  How about a public pool when it’s the hottest day in the summer and everyone and their grandma are searching for a place to lounge.

13.  Speaking of summer, try putting on your shorts after a winter of hibernation and tell us that it isn’t impossible to get into them.

14.  Even if you’re lucky enough to get an Uber on a Friday or Saturday night, getting into it successfully with your six best and drunkest friends is quite the challenge.

15.  You may have all of your perfect classes at the best times lined up for next semester, but getting into them is a different story; during registration, you’ll most likely sit and watch as they become full and you get stuck with a 6-8 lab (in the morning or at night, take your pick).

16.  Laundry room on a Sunday. You keep walking into the room, ready to finally wash your clothes, only to find that people keep taking the only open machines.

17.  And if you think getting into college is hard, you’ve obviously never tried to get into a hammock.

15 Exams We Would Totally Ace

Break out the sweatpants and up your caffeine intake. That’s right collegiettes, it’s final exam season. It’s the bane of our existence, the reason we’ve been stuck in the library for 17 hours and the only thing standing in our way before summer. While we know that modern literature and bio-chemistry are important, this time of year would be so much easier if we were just tested on things we actually cared about. If we had exams like these, there’s no doubt we would ace them, without the cramming and all-nighters.

1. What Instagram Filter Makes Us Look Most Tan

It’s always a toss up between Valencia and Hefe.

2. Finding the Best Online Shopping Sale

40% off or no deal.

3. Taylor Swift Lyrics: A Comprehensive History

Sure you can ace the “Blank Space” section, but how’s your “Teardrops on my Guitar” knowledge?

West Virginia's Anti-Abortion Bill is Now in Effect

0
0

This Tuesday, West Virginia joined eleven other states as its new 20-week abortion ban took effect. Originally vetoed by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin on the basis of the bill's proposed unconstitutionality, West Virginian legislators successfully overrode the veto. Reasoning behind the bill includes inconclusive and often disputed evidence that fetuses may feel pain as early as 20 weeks.

Specifically, the ban makes any abortion occurring 20 weeks after conception illegal. Therefore, medical professionals who perform termination procedures after the 20-week mark will be subject to consequences. Like many other anti-abortion bills, the ban may greatly compromise a women's right to proper healthcare.

While the bill includes strict and limited accommodations for women whose pregnancies may pose health risks, this ban disregards the fact that terminated pregnancies after 20 weeks are particularly rare, only occurring under extreme and unexpected pregnancy complications that harm the mother or result in an unviable fetus. Planned Parenthood of South Atlantic's Melissa Reed comments, "While a women should not have to justify her personal medical decisions, the reality is that abortion later in pregnancy is extremely rare, and often happens under heartbreaking situations," insinuating that banning abortions after that 20-week period is not preventing irresponsible terminations, but instead preventing women from getting through extremely difficult and dangerous situations as safely as possible.

What's most problematic about this new ban is what opposition cites as a crude overlook of the challenges women seeking abortion often face. The ban poses unrealistic and inconsiderate expectations on women, particularly those suffering from mental illness or who are pregnant as a result of rape or incest. Under the current policy, no exemptions are given to victims of rape or incest, and even women with psychological issues that may result in harm to self or to the fetus are not given an exception.

The ban, one of many state-wide anti-abortion laws imposed in the past few years, follows another national anti-abortion bill update that occurred earlier this month. A bill for the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act was recently passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, and although it provides more exceptions for instances of rape, incest, and medical complications than the West Virginia ban does, opposition still runs strong. President Obama leads the opposition, claiming to veto the bill if it makes it to his office. Nonetheless, for women's rights activists, the current spike in anti-abortion legislation both state- and nationwide may been seen as a concerning barrier for women's equality in the United States.

What is your take on conditional anti-abortion laws? Are 20-week bans a necessary restriction, or do they compromise the health and constitutional rights of women in the United States?

Taco Bell is Getting Rid of Artificial Ingredients in Its Food

Often times we collegiettes must deal with the unhealthy consequences of eating greasy, late-night fast food after a long night out... or at the library. These unhealthy food choices usually result in the dreaded Freshman 15 that every upperclassman tries to warn us about before we even step foot on campus. But, there may be light at the end of the tunnel with everyone’s favorite taco and burrito place, Taco Bell, swapping its artificial, fattening ingredients for healthier ones.

Taco Bell announced on Tuesday that it would be getting rid of all the artificial colors, chemical ingredients, and added trans-fats in their meals by the end of 2015. This change will result in some items, such as the nacho cheese and red tortilla chips, losing the bright coloring Taco Bell items are usually known for. Artificial ingredients, such as the black flavor pepper (which'll be replaced with real black pepper), high fructose corn syrup and unsustainable palm oil will not find themselves in Taco Bell’s menu items any longer.

Taco Bell is not the first food chain to make these changes, as they join Panera, which decided to rid their menu of artificial additives by the end of 2016 and Chipotle, which refuses to use GMOs in their items. Also, fellow Yum! Brands-owned chain, Pizza Hut, has opted to get rid of artificial flavors by July. McDonalds and Subway have also started reducing the amount of chemical ingredients in their items. These restaurant changes are a response to the steady increase of millennials who are calling for healthier food options on their menus. Taco Bell CEO Brian Niccol says that millennial customers are declaring “less is más when it comes to ingredients.”

Aaron Allen, a restaurant industry consultant and analyst expects more restaurants and food chains to transform their menus to reach the growing number of health-conscious individuals: “We're finally hitting the tipping point in the food industry when it comes to healthier and fresher ingredients.” Allen explained to Mashable, “I think they saw this as an opportunity to get out in front of these changes before they are absolutely forced to...They are scrambling to get on it in such a way that it creates a positive public perception for them.”

With these transformations being implemented before and during the new school year, college students will have more freedom to choose menu items without worrying about the unhealthy ingredients they are eating, presenting the Freshman 15 as a myth possibly to never be heard of again.
